HELLO Everything started with the idea of translating Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”. Upon having a dozen of translations, we came up with the idea of collecting them in a school magazine. Even though we have lots of questions in mind, we think at least it is worth trying our luck. Thus, we ‘took the road less travelled by, and that has made all the difference’. At the end of the road, we have had a collection of translations, essays and reviews on various topics, so we have decided to share our hope with you and set off for new journeys together. We hope you will enjoy, thank you in advance!

APPLICATIONS

Deniz AVŞAR The FREE online service with instant feedback that helps learners improve their writing independently.

HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY WRITING SKILLS? Thanks to improving technology, we can find various applications and websites that can help us improve our English. The right question is this; What is useful and what is a waste of time? On this edition of our magazine, I want to introduce a website called “Write and Improve” which is very useful to improve your writing. If you think that writing is the most difficult part of learning English, you should visit this website without losing any time. I’m sure you will appreciate it for its contribution. Let’s first have a look at how it works. When you visit the website, you will see 3 levels that you can choose, including Beginner, Intermediate

and Advanced. For each level there are plenty of tasks to start enjoying. You are given a text box to write your paragraph within a word limit. When you finish your paragraph, click “CHECK” button to receive feedback immediately. In the feedback you will see certain colors and symbols about your errors, and it also gives you a chance to correct your errors with its “CHANGE” button. In the second feedback, colors and symbols will be reduced but most probably they won’t disappear completely because you will still have some errors. Don’t give up. Do it again and again, because every feedback you get will help you get to the next level. It’s a fact that if you want to improve your English, you should strive. But some supportive ideas make your job easier. Therefore, “Write and Improve” might provide an overwhelming advantage to improve your writing skills. Don’t you think that it is worth trying!

TECHNOLOGY

Görkem Kürşat HORUK

This technological product produced by Google is more than a glass Google Glass is an optical head-mounted display designed in the shape of a pair of eyeglasses. It was developed by X (previously Google X) with the mission of producing a ubiquitous computer. Google Glass displayed information in a smartphone-like hands-free format. Wearers communicate with the Internet via natural language voice commands. Google started selling a prototype of Google Glass to

qualified “Glass Explorers” in the US on April 15, 2013, for a limited period for $1,500, before it became available to the public on May 15, 2014. It also had a camera attached to it. People can do many thing with this. For example, they can take and watch video/photo, can search anything on internet, send message by talking, thanks to Google Glass you can call whoever you want, like a mobile phone

TRAVEL

A SMALL city whıch ıs deprived of many things but has DANUBE River

The capital city of Slovakia, Bratislava was founded on the banks of the Danube River, just like the other Central European capitals. It also attracts attention with its border to both Austria and Hungary. Bratislava, one of Europe’s most dynamic and young populated cities, has a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Bratislava Castle, Devín Castle, Blue Church, the Museum of Arms, the Bratislava City Museum, St. Martin’s Cathedral, the Museum of History and Mozart’s House are just some of the places worth visiting. Besides, it is possible to discover a large part of the city on foot in one day because of its narrow space area. Just watch the scenery, sit on the benches in the lovely streets, read magazines and books in the open-air library and rest in the beanbags under the glamorous trees.

Some Advices

Deniz AVŞAR

What is music? Is it an art of arranging sounds with various methods? Yes. If I want to talk about its dictionary meaning, it’s a pretty explanatory definition. However, it is impossible to define music with a single meaning. It is a soul which takes possession of you, like magic that makes the past visible in your mind. Sometimes it’s like a dangerous gun which is ready to pull its trigger to remind you of the undesirable memories. As Nietzsche said “Without music life would be a mistake”

After these explanations I have several suggestions of some admirable ethnic music. While some of them are in harmony with Anatolian melodies, some have elements of rock music. You can choose the one that is closer to your soul. Explore and enjoy!

OMNIA-Fee Ra Huri They make acoustic music. They reflect a mystical view with their clothes and stage equipments. So fun.

LIGHT IN BABYLON - Hinech Yafa I love them. Especially Michal Elia Kamal who is the vocal of the band. She is an indication of the fact that a person might turn into a goddess while singing.

KUAN- Haydar Haydar Kuan is an adventure started by BarkĹn Çoruh and Demircan Demir in 2011. The instruments used at their concerts are produced by Demircan Demir.

TAMIKREST-Dihad tedoun itran They have combined traditional, rock, and blues music with their unique style. You can feel the civil war in their album called CHATMA. If you are keen on Blues music you should definitely listen to them.

THE POEM OF THE MONTH

Robert FROST

The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

TRANSLATION OF THE MONTH

A Short Story

Student’s best friend, coffee! Is it just a a cup of

The touching story of the coffee

This is a touching story that attracts your soul more than your taste, feeds your memories more than your body, and becomes the hero of this story with its magical power that converts a moment into a feast with just its smell. This magic can accompany all your moods from the most cheerful ones to the saddest moments. So it’s not just “fair weather friend”. “Mmm” Do you think those letters are a summary of everything created by our lips after the first sip? Actually they are nothing but a simple exclamation. I won’t tell you about the details of the story because you should find it out after brewing your perfect coffee.

WHAT’S ON STAGE IN ISTANBUL?

Anıl YENİGÜL

WHAT’S ON? Last year, it was the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. All around the world, there were dozens of innovative and creative events in honour of the Bard’s work. The genius born in the Globe had already become global over the course of time. However, since the Shakespeare Festival in 2016, his works have been transformed into many genres with TV and cinema adaptations, exhibitions, music festivals along with astonishing theatre performances in many different languages. Various organizations in Turkey also commemorated the anniversary of the Bard especially with a dominance of Shakespeare plays on stages, especially in the cultural capital of the country, Istanbul. There have been many premiers of various Shakespeare plays such as Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello, The Tempest, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. If you want to enjoy one of those astonishing Shakespeare plays, En Kısa Gecenin Rüyası, a marvellous adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been staged for two years in Moda Sahnesi, and it is highly recommended. One of Shakespeare’s rare comedies is set in a very different context with the implementation of some local cultural elements with a touch of successful translation.

ECONOMY

Veysel YILDIRIM

Crypto Currencies Did you know that we have new currencies from the future , or for the future? According to coinmarketcap.com, there are 1368 altcoins in existence and the father of these coins is Bitcoin that is known as BTC. Most of them are open source and using peer-to-peer (P2P) technology. P2P technology might be considered as the architecture of blockchain. All of 1368 alt coins and bitcoin use blockchain. Bitcoin works with peer-to-peer technology, and that makes it possible to function without using the central authority or bank. The management of transactions and the distribution of bitcoins are collectively handled by the network. No one owns Bitcoin and cannot control it. Everybody can join this technology. So what are all these things? Where do they come from? Is it safe enough? Actually alt coins have owners, but there is no owner for BTC, and that makes it special. We have one codename, it` s Satoshi Nakamoto, creator of blockchain and bitcoin. But it`s all story. No one knows who this genius is. He created an algorithm that can allow you to have BTC with hardware and software combinations. We call it `mining`. Thanks to this, you can earn coins with the cost of electricity and hardware. However, there is one thing you need to know about BTC. It`s limited. We can`t make

more than 21 million BTC. In addition, we cannot change this number. Nowadays we are at about 16 million and it`s getting harder to mine. It is estimated that we will reach 21 million BTC at around 2100. We talked about peer-to-peer technology; we do not have somebody to do the transactions or providing security. Yes, security. Except fraud, your money is all safe. If you know how to keep it safe, of course. When your money is in exchange websites, you need to be curios because they can be hacked. We are using digital wallets to keep and use all these coins. You have to secure your digital wallet just like your physical wallet. We have different types of wallets to keep your digital money. Desktop wallet, web wallet, mobile wallet, hardware wallet, and paper wallet, which is the most secure. They are all using special codes like special key codes and public key codes. Blockchain algorithm uses these codes during transactions to secure the process. Trust me, if you know how to keep it safe, your money is safe! Let’s take a look at bitcoin`s value, then. In short, it is getting valuable day by day. In the last year it has increased by 1500 percent in dollars. Moreover, all these prices are based on the demand. BTC is experimental but we can use it as money because it has a value. Do not forget that the internet was also experimental once. Torrent technology was also experimental and it works with P2P. It owes its success to P2P technology. Overall, I think the digital coins are the future of the economy.
