Now, Moss is 84 and still lives in the same townhouse, currently estimated to be worth at least £10 million. So when Sir Stirling invited Granite Transformations to upgrade his bathroom, as part of what Moss terms his extensive ‘Project 46’ refurbishment, the home makeover company leapt at the chance to showcase its elegant agglomerate interior finishes and Trend glass mosaic tiles, in such a futuristic setting. The result is a spectacular transformation in clean, crisp, contemporary polar white and silver. Sir Stirling expressed himself delighted with both the workmanship and finish.

Kapelleberg Resort

Refuge in the Ardennes

The hotel spoils guests in a relaxed, natural ambience and relies on watersaving technology from Hansgrohe. Esher, January December 2014. The Kapelleberg Resort in Belgium is the Ying and Yang of state-of-the-art hotel operations: with its custom services, the small hotel is able to cater to the needs of holiday-makers and conference guests alike in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Meanwhile the owners reap the rewards of showerheads featuring Hansgrohe EcoSmart technology help them save water and energy, which in turn in marked reductions in running costs. with the close-to-nature concept of this resort near Gent, which revolves around the experience of being in the Flemish Ardennes. An oasis of calm Nestled in an idyllic hilly landscape, the former farm complex converted into a hotel is the base for many and various activities, such as organised cycling and hiking tours, horse-drawn

carriage rides into the foothills of the Ardennes mountains or – and this is especially popular with the guests – trips around the countryside on a Vespa. At the same time, the resort in its rural setting is greatly appreciated as a quiet retreat, for single travellers, for couples and for families. The resort has become an insiders’ tip for seminars and private events, where guests can focus on whatever they want, far from the hubbub of life in the city. To cater for events of all kinds, the establishment reminiscent of a furnished rooms, a conference room and halls suitable for staging events. The sophisticated kitchen is set to spoil individual guests as well as small groups with the rich tradition of Flemish cuisine. The courtyard surrounded by brick buildings lends itself an atmospheric venue under open skies, ideal for shared meals and companionable get-togethers; the connection with nature is also provided by the private terraces

outside the individual rooms on the The rooms are named after prominent a special place in the region’s past beyond the Flanders region: for example, Emperor Charles V who, with a beautiful weaver’s daughter Oudenaarde fathered their daughter Margarethe – who today also lends her name to one of the rooms at Kapelleberg. Also featured is the Flemish landscape painter of the Romantic period, Jacob Blommaert. The austere style of the rooms with their roughly rendered walls, wooden the rooms are located in the attic and have exposed roof beams – exudes simplicity and does away with anything theme of this resort, which is all about tranquility.

An authentic experience with modern conveniences The purist ambience combines with contemporary bathroom design, from the spacious shower spaces and natural stone basins right through to the convenience of the high-rise Hansgrohe Talis Classic mixers. Hand sprays from the Raindance Select 120 EcoSmart line are installed in the showers. With their combination technologies, they contribute to the This results in considerable savings, as the Hansgrohe showerheads with EcoSmart technology are able to produce a high- volume shower experience using only 9 litres of water per minute – without any compromise in terms of comfort. The private operators of the Kapelleberg Resort are delighted with the 40 percent reduction in water consumption compared with conventional hand sprays. Moreover, the hotel also achieves savings in terms of the cost

of energy required to heat the water. Not only do both factors reduce operating costs; they also help the environment. Indulgence and cost awareness go hand-in-hand This synthesis of sustainability, cost awareness and sensuousness can be considered quite typical of Flanders. In this region of Belgium, the savoir vivre and cuisine of neighbouring France meet northern European and Calvinist traditions, not least from the Netherlands; and the opulent Renaissance architecture of the old merchant towns of Flanders surrounded by the authentic natural environment of the Ardennes make for a harmonious blend that attracted painters and poets as far back as the 19th Century.

Are there enough homes for the ageing population? A recent project by Demos*, ‘Top of the Ladder’, has indicated that there is a shortage of housing for the older generation with 3.5 million people aged over 60 wishing to buy retirement property, but only 100,000 suitable homes exist. Andrew Royle, UK Commercial Director at P C Henderson comments on considerations to help answer demand, whether new build or for refurbishment projects. “Choosing the right fixtures and fittings, such as sliding door systems, can help houses meet the needs of the ageing population and help answer increasing demand.” Versatile and silent in use, the Husky 50kg and 100kg sliding door systems are ideal for use as room dividers as well as for wardrobe doors, freeing up valuable space in a room. CCTV hire supports Excellence in Drain Services

Lanes Group wins work to alleviate flood risks in major northern town

Applefields School in York, has transformed its appearance by replacing old and damaged plastic rainwater goods with Yeoman Rainguard Aluminium gutters and pipes.

With more than 40 regional drain cleaning service centres across the country, Metro Rod provides a 24 hour service to anyone with blocked or damaged drains, pipes, toilets, sinks etc. To support this capability, the company and its franchisees maintain a fleet of the latest equipment. To ensure a fast and effective response to all customer requests during periods of peak demand, many of the franchisees take advantage of Ashtead Technology’s equipment rental fleet. Ashtead Technology’s Jay Neermul says “We have invested in our wastewater inspection fleet to meet increased demand, and have recently ordered more of the latest crawler units and pushrod cameras. We are therefore delighted to be able to partner with Metro Rod’s teams to ensure that they have exactly the right kit, wherever and whenever they need it.” For further details call: 0845 270 2707 or visit: www.ashtead-technology.com

Lanes Group is helping to identify and resolve widespread potential flood problems in a town in Greater Manchester. Bolton Council has called in Lanes to carry out CCTV drainage surveys of culverts, followed by cleaning works, as part of the strategic management of flood risks in the town. The project is being delivered in two phases. Early in 2013, Lanes were commissioned to carry out CCTV drainage surveys of approximately 2,800m of culverted watercourse in 21 locations across the borough. Ian Clapham, Area Development Manager for Lanes North West, said: "We were able to make sure we had the right teams and equipment planned into a detailed and timebound programme. "Our experience working on major highways and flood alleviation projects across the UK means we have been able to meet Bolton Council's technical and time requirements."

With an attractive black textured finish, the 150 x 100 MOG gutters and 100 x 75mm downpipes have created a smart, professional appearance. “We are absolutely delighted with the way it looks,” enthused Tony. The XL Aluminium range allows it to be successfully incorporated on both traditional and modern buildings. Strong aesthetic qualities, ease of installation and value for money make it equally popular for many different applications such as schools, churches, supermarkets, offices and retail outlets.

Rapierstar screws and fixings are manufactured to the highest quality, exceeding EU standards and carrying CE marking. StarTurn woodscrews and StarFix plugless masonry fixings deliver all round superior performance when compared with similar fixings due to the unique, European patented, StarForm™ cutting thread - providing faster insertion with reduced torque. The thread begins at the very point of the screw, which means that starting is virtually instant and a lubricated finish improves speed of insertion screws are also plated to exceed all industry technical recommendations. The unique StarForm™ cutting thread is a true cutting thread - unlike the thread forms found on other screw fixings which merely give the impression of a cutting thread due to the presence of (largely ineffectual) clearance channels. The StarForm™ thread provides superior performance by self tapping a reciprocal thread into the substrate. Benefits include; better resistance to the fixing pulling out of the anchor base due to the more effective thread engagement and reduced torque required to drive in (up to 30% less). There is a huge advantage in using CE-marked fixing products. Not only are Rapierstar StarTurn and StarFix screws available with all of the necessary accreditations and proof of meeting standards, you also have the reassurance of tested and approved fasteners forming the cornerstone of your construction project.

Darrock & Brown builds fuel savings When it comes to specialist restoration and conservation work, few builders can claim the expertise and experience of Cornwall’s Darrock & Brown. The Bodmin-based company runs a fleet of 10 vans and pick-up trucks, from a variety of manufacturers. All Darrock & Brown vehicles have one thing in common: they run on diesel. “It just makes commercial sense,” says Managing director Bill Gladwell. To be more precise, the company’s vehicles mostly run on Texaco diesel, although they can also be refuelled at supermarkets – Tesco, Morrisons, the Co-Operative – at Moto service stations and at smaller, independent chains. Darrock & Brown’s drivers each carry a Texaco Fastfuel card, supplied by Fuel Card Services. Darrock & Brown chose the Texaco fuel card, after comparing it with everything else available, for the savings and convenience. The fixed weekly pricing means that it pays, typically, up to 4p per litre less than national average pump prices. www.fuelcardservices.com/fastfuel/

First 840 Space Primary School Opens in Bristol

Recent stories about the shortage of primary places means adopting an innovative approach and thanks to the design by Bath based architects, Batterham Matthews Design, popular Air Balloon school in Bristol able to accommodate 840 places by September Edwardian Art Nouveau style buildings. A long overdue re-organisation of existing buildings has increased the school’s capacity from 630 to 840 places. A new classroom outside and a new school kitchen complete the expansion. Extensive consultation at an early stage with the school community, English Heritage and the planners has meant that the project has been well received by the local community. Headteacher Rob Worsfold said: “The design really took my breath away and the vision was so inspiring that it was easy for the school to join in and co-operate on the full project. We now have increased outside space, far greater security and beautiful buildings. This parents for September were a joy to behold when they arrived for a new parents’ evening, back to see such an impressive school.” George Batterham of Batterham Matthews said: “It is an honour and Weston at the turn of the century. Our design for a new twelve-classroom building completes the fourth side of a central courtyard. “A modern, glazed link complements the rich texture of the original stone buildings either side. A long, three-metre wide boardwalk provides a new spine through the building, linking the old and new together into a cohesive whole.” contractor Skanska and Bristol City Council seven years ago, carried It has also expanded and refurbished 13 primaries and plans are being developed to increase a further 10-15 schools to help Bristol meet its need for 5,000 more primary school places by 2016. Following on from the design and successful expansion of another Bristol school, Hannah More from 270 to 420 places, where six new classrooms were placed on the roof of the existing school, both schools are designed with an additional 20% carbon reduction on Building Regulation requirements, achieved via the City Council’s Core Strategy, supported by both Skanska and Batterham Matthews, and is a positive step toward providing more structurally insulated timber panels and timber cladding ensure an

projects involving the refurbishment and extension of existing buildings provide individual challenges during the design and construction phases. Having a strong, pro-active team is the only way to achieve success. Batterham Matthews have been very successful in producing designs that all parties approve of.” Batterham Matthews Design is a design led architectural practice dedicated to environmentally conscious and sustainable design energy and space. REPEAT ORDER FIVE YEARS LATER SITS PRETTY WITH FURNITURE IMPORTER Five years ago, a care home organisation took delivery of PolyWood tables and chairs for its Margate site, and has just taken delivery of more PolyWood garden furniture for its new Brentwood residence, the Beeches. “By now, after five years in constant use and exposure to the elements, equivalent outdoor furniture made from timber may well be on its last legs, or desperately needing intensive maintenance,” explains managing director Marcus Palmer, “but the PolyWood furniture in Margate has needed nothing more than a few washdowns. It still looks as good as new, proving a wise investment. We’re delighted to have supplied more furniture for this new development in Brentwood.”

30

The Miramar Signature Care home in Brentwood, Essex, has installed a variety of PolyWood tables and chairs with cushions. The design of the project was by Leisure Concepts Architects from Kenilworth. They specified the Traditional Garden range of furniture in Sand. The Beeches in Brentwood is a purpose-built care home embracing elegant living comprising 99 private apartments with landscaped gardens, dining areas, a cafe and even a cinema room. As the PolyWood furniture is classically-styled and finished in a neutral colour, it has fitted easily into the outdoor areas providing stylish al fresco dining or seating for socialising; its unique

recycled plastic material affords not only comfort and stability but year-round maintenance-free care. As the furniture can be left outdoors as it is weather-proof, staff time does not need to be spent moving it and residents can quickly take advantage of unexpectedly warm and sunny days. “We think the PolyWood furniture looks superb in this location,” concludes Marcus. “It really blends in well and fits in with the style created by the architects and the organisation. Their residents would expect top quality garden furniture from a home like The Beeches, and we were thrilled to supply it.” The PolyWood range offers an environmentallyresponsible solution to the millions of plastic bottles thrown away in landfills. Pellets of processed, recycled bottles are extruded to create plastic ‘timber’ which is then hand-crafted in exactly the same way as natural timber to create PolyWood’s stunning outdoor furniture range. Proven over time, Poly-Wood is unaffected by sun, rain, snow, sleet, wind, saltwater, chlorine and mildew. As it is non-porous and uses stainless steel fixings, the furniture can be left outside all year round even in the most hostile of climates; washing with a mild detergent will keep it clean. Floors & Flooring REFURBISH, DON’T REPLACE YOUR FLOOR!! Dr Schutz, the German floor care company offers PU Design, an innovative solution that quickly and easily transforms tired, damaged or old floors, at a fraction of the time and cost of an entire floor replacement – particularly relevant in these costconscious times! This new system makes it possible to create a bespoke design that can be created to suit individual interiors, tastes or particular needs. Lothar Schutz, Managing Director of Dr-Schutz explains, “There are millions of square feet of existing floors that require renovation because they are worn, used or damaged by high traffic - or they simply no longer suit the user’s style or interior design. We recognised this need and developed PU Design - a flooring product which can save money, reduce waste material AND breathe life into tired interior designs. By cleaning the existing floor and then applying the PU Design colour and protection layers, it is possible to create fresh, exciting and safe new flooring schemes at a fraction of the cost of alternatives. It’s a new product offering real benefits to end-users!”

stripped to remove all the layers of dirt and old polish. Then, the new colour layer is applied. There are ten standard colours and 200 RAL available to special order – so a phenomenal range of design options is available. At this point colour chips, logos, signage or corporate branding can be inserted onto the floor if desired. Then lastly, one layer of PU 100 sealant is applied to give a hardwearing finish and protection to the new floor. Once in place, the floor is preserved through simple routine maintenance and with general cleaning and a coat of PU Sealer once every 2-3 years, the floor will remain looking new and well protected throughout its lifetime.

The freshness, colour and design freedom PU Design offers is a perfect fit for architects, facilities managers and interior designers, and the end-users will appreciate it across the board; from schools and colleges, through to retail outlets and warehouses – indeed any floor with high traffic areas. Suitable for use with vinyl, linoleum and rubber floors, PU Design can also be used on all resilient and industrial floors, including concrete and epoxy flooring.

Amazingly this floor transformation can be completed in less than two working days. Contrast this with the 5-6 days of downtime that laying a new floor involves, the appeal of PU Design is obvious. In addition, this offers an eco friendly method for renovating a floor system as it avoids waste, pollution and noise.

Applying PU Design is a simple three stage process. Firstly, the original floor is thoroughly cleaned and

SELECTAGLAZE HELPS MODERNISE “A MODEL OF SOCIAL HOUSING & URBAN LIVING” Basterfield House, Golden Lane Estate

The World War II Blitz saw the devastating destruction of vast areas of the City of London. Following the war, the local authority urgently needed to provide “general needs” council housing for the multitude of people who served or worked in the City, particularly single people and young couples. In 1951 a competition was announced inviting architects to design an estate within the 7 acre Golden Lane area of East London. The competition attracted dozens of entrants but was eventually

I am very happy with my new secondary glazing units as they have noticeably improved both noise and thermal insulation, while looking contemporary and also operating smoothly. Additionally, the service received from Selectaglaze was professional and gave me complete confidence throughout the design and installation process

Powell and two of his fellow lecturers in architecture at Kingston Polytechnic (now Kingston University School of Architecture), entered the competition on the understanding that whom so ever won, all three would work together on the project. Three decades later the resulting partnership of Peter (Joe) Chamberlin, Christoph Bon went on to design the neighbouring Barbican Centre. In addition to housing, the estate provides social facilities for residents, including a swimming

pool, gym, nursery, pub, tennis courts (originally created as a bowling green), together with police and to create an “urban microcosm” in line with the local authority’s post-war planning and housing commitment to quality design for urban living. The development of multistorey buildings provided a combination of studio 554 in total, set within beautifully landscaped grounds. When completed, the estate became a symbol of post-war

recovery, regarded as a model of “social integration” with early tenants including caretakers, clergymen, secretaries. The Estate saw further development during the late 1950’s-early 1960’s and is now home to 1,500 people with approximately half of the properties having been sold on long leases under the “Right to Buy” Scheme launched in 1980; the remainder having been retained by the City of London Corporation for

Additionally, the service received from Selectaglaze was professional and gave In the 1990’s the estate received Grade II and Grade II* Listing as buildings of “special architectural interest” in view of its importance as an example of post-war residential architecture. Listing restricts owner’s freedom to make to individual dwellings, as is the case with the original aluminium windows which, in most instances, do not meet modern standards of thermal and noise insulation. As the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer

of secondary glazing systems, together with their unparalleled credentials working alongside Heritage bodies within Listed and sensitive buildings, Selectaglaze was the obvious choice to consult to provide a solution to the problems associated with the windows. Selectaglaze and Diamond Architects worked closely together on meticulous detailing of the secondary glazing. New Combi Biomass Boiler Burns Logs and Pellets

British manufacturer Keston has designed and supplied a boiler rig solution for QPR Football Stadium in Shepherds Bush, London, to meet challenging installation requirements. Their prompt action ensured that the Club was able to meet official regulations within an extremely small timeframe, preventing them from incurring a considerable fine. Just a few weeks before Sky Sports and the BBC were scheduled to attend the Club’s first home game of the season, League Officials presented QPR with strict regulations that effectively demanded the replacement of the entire hot water system. The gas engineer in charge of finding a solution was Tim Ayres of Prompt Services, he commented, “The decision to select Keston was simple, as no other manufacturer was able to meet the exacting requirements and strict deadline demanded by QPR.” For more information please call 01482 443005 or go to www.keston.co.uk

Ecodan helps keep heating bills down in hybrid installation

Storage heating is dead! Efficient Electric central heating is here to stay!

Ecodan wins best home energy solution at national improvement awards

The installation of an Ecodan air source heat pump into a 3-bedroom detached house in Bedfordshire has demonstrated how effectively the heat pump will work in conjunction with traditional heating systems to maximise efficiency and reduce both installation costs and emissions. The 5kW Ecodan and pre-plumbed 180-litre cylinder was installed in April and is working as a hybrid heating system with a gas boiler and a wood burning stove, to provide all the heating and hot water the family of three needs. The timber-framed, brick-clad house was built in 2006 and, with a young baby in the home the family has a high hot water demand. Despite this requiring high water temperatures, the system has returned a COP (Coefficient of Performance) of 3.0. The Knight family is also expecting to benefit from around £500 a year payments when the Renewable Heat Incentive starts in April. Visit – www.heating.mitsubishielectric.co.uk

It exists – NOW, Specifically I designed to replace the bulky, inefficient and poor control of outdated storage heating, we have the solution for easy upgrade to an advanced, stylish and efficient central heating system which YOU control. Popular in Continental Europe for some time, our easily installed central heating systems are also now competitive with oil and LPG running costs, and the cheap non—invasive installation and zero maintenance is making them increasingly popular with developers in new build and redevelopment projects, even when gas is available.

Mitsubishi Electric’s fourth generation of Ecodan air source heat pumps has just been recognised as ‘Best Home Energy Solution’ at the National Home Improvement Council Awards. The judges praised the system for providing: “a sustainable way of reducing the burden of energy costs for tenants and those struggling in these tough economic conditions.” Baroness Verma, representing the Department of Energy and Climate Change and David Carver, Chairman of NHIC were on hand to present the award. “We were delighted to receive this recognition as we have worked hard to make Ecodan suitable for both new buildings and old,” explained Martin Fahey, Sustainable Solutions Manager who collected the Award. “It was particularly encouraging that the judges acknowledged how the technology can help hard pressed households reduce their bills.”

We are continually looking to extend our nationwide network of NEEDO approved specifier. As an approved specifier benefiting from 20% commission. For further information call: 0845 163 0055 or visit: www.intelligentheat.co.uk

Home Automation TECHNOLOGY FIRM HELPS COMMUNITY SAVE ‘BIG’ Ewgeco helps Scottish community make savings of almost 50 per cent A leading Scottish energy management firm has helped a residential community near Aberdeen reduce its energy spend by almost 50 per cent thanks to its award-winning traffic-light display technology. Ewgeco, based in Edinburgh, is the creator of realtime energy monitoring systems which measure energy sources in homes and businesses. The company was asked to take part in ‘The Great Big Energy Saving Challenge’ which aired on BBC Two Scotland last night (31 October 2013, 9pm). As part of the trial, six families in Stonehaven were challenged to cut the amount of electricity and gas they used by 30 per cent in just three weeks. With the help of practical advice from experienced energy and engineering specialists, the families monitored the energy they were using over the course of the project and reacted to any excessive use by lowering electricity and gas levels when they were being used unnecessarily. To identify where electricity and gas was being wasted, the families used Ewgeco’s in-premises display systems which work by gathering real-time data

from metering points and present it instantly on an easy-to-read energy display. The displays use a traffic light system, which alerted the families to where immediate improvements to energy efficiency could be made. Over the course of the project, the families saw collective savings of just under 50 per cent in three weeks by simply being more aware of the energy they were using and changing their behaviour to reduce wasted energy. Ewgeco chief executive, George McGhee said: “On average, 20 per cent of the energy used in UK households is wasted through inefficient behaviour such as:

lights left on when they’re not needed, heating being used when no one is in or heating being set higher than it needs to be. Inefficient light bulbs can also add to this further. “The impressive results from the families in Stonehaven shows that meters with in-premises display like ours can put householders in control of their energy use, allowing them to adapt their behaviour to save money on their energy bills and offset the increasing price hikes we have been seeing so much of recently.” For more information about Ewgeco, please visit: www.ewgeco.com

The Interiors Group carried out a lot of work to get the project just right, in terms of design options and making sure the manufacturer had the correct information. A particular challenge was the co-ordination of the positions of the fantiles located in the front of house areas that were within the nice timber head on, ensuring fantiles were positioned in a way so as not to be too prominent and therefore spoil the intended design. The colour scheme throughout looks striking, utilising Amadeus’ company colour palette of royal blue and white. Happold Lighting, designers of the scheme, explained that Sill fixtures were chosen for their high optical performance, luminaire size and aesthetic look. Since its inception in 2006, Camberley-based LED Eco Lights has grown rapidly and has recently completed its 4000th UK installation. Goodlight retrofit LED lights offer a long lifespan, very low power consumption and can provide dramatic cost savings. In fact, the company is so confident of the difference its LED lamps will make that it quotes a pay-back time of as little as 12 months. Safety in the sky Crossgrip walkway matting, manufactured in the UK by Plastic Extruders Ltd, has been installed on the roof of a large Tesco Extra store in Pitsea, Essex. Crossgrip safety matting is an ideal solution for this type of application as many services are located on the roof. This means that defined walkways are necessary so that service engineers have safe access to maintain and repair at any time. Not only does the matting provide a permanent safe walkway which is highly durable and slip resistant (R10 rating under DIN 51130) but it also protects the roof membrane from damage. Another benefit is that Crossgrip is loose laid and is warrantied to remain stable in winds of up to 96km/h - 60mph (in laboratory conditions, when laid flat on a stable platform, it remained in position for wind speeds of 150 km/h -94mph). Pitch roof installation kits – MCS 012 BBA: Recent figures published by DECC show that the level of solar panel installations has seen a healthy improvement with 3000 installations registered in the sub 50kW band in the week ending June 23rd. This is positive news for an industry which has had to deal with some challenging issues. However, an increase in installations tends to lead to a rise in leaking roofs being reported by householders. In an attempt to address this problem the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) published MCS012 Product Certification Scheme Requirements: Pitched Roof Installation Kits on 16th March 2012. This is a new requirement for mounting kits used with solar heating and solar PV installations intended for installation on pitched roofs. The document addresses three aspects of performance: resistance to wind loading, reaction to fire and resistance to water penetration. For more information and a quotation contact the BBA; E-mail testing@bba.star.co.uk or tel 01923 665300.

Langley Enjoys Life in the Fast Lane with Unique Project for Sir Stirling Moss Langley Waterproofing Systems Ltd, the national roofing and waterproofing expert, has undertaken an impressive copper veral roofing project at the Mayfair home of British racing icon Sir Stirling Moss. "The specialist copper veral solution from Langley was selected by Sir Stirling and the project's contractor, Keith Marzetti of Tower Asphalt Ltd., for its long product life and high resistance to cracking. Sir Stirling knew he could trust the product, as the roof being replaced was a Langley copper veral system installed more than 20 years ago by Keith and his team. Barry Yardley, Regional Manager for Langley, added: "Working with copper veral is always interesting, and especially on bespoke residential projects. It was a delight to work with Sir Stirling and Tower Asphalt team throughout the project and the finished roof looks spectacular.” For more information visit www.langley.co.uk

Traditional Metal Roofing Specialists Recognised by CSCS Laying down a significant marker for their trade, roofing specialists in traditional hard metals (copper, stainless steel and zinc) now have their own Traditional / Heritage Roofing CSCS card. Launched on the 1st June 2013, the Traditional / Heritage Roofing – Hard Metals CSCS card will identify those craftsmen experienced in traditional metal roofing design and installation. Following in the footsteps of a similar card created to identify experienced specialist leadworkers, the Traditional / Heritage hard metals card will have a Managed Industry Accreditation (“Grandfather Rights”) period of twelve months, during which any suitably experienced metal roofing contractor can apply to be issued with the card. At the end of twelve months (i.e. 31st May 2014) this route will be closed and then applicants will need an NVQ3 in heritage metal roofing or have to undergo a practical / theory assessment process in order to get their card. Although Managed

whilst available the Industry Accreditation

route will be a cheaper and more convenient process in getting the card, they will not just be simply given away to every applicant. The purpose of the card is to identify roofing contractors experienced in traditional / heritage metal roofing and separate them from the many other contractors involved in the industry that have neither the experience nor the appropriate skills in this specialist sector. This will in turn enable clients and specifiers to regard the Traditional / Heritage Roofing cardholders as having the skills and experience they require when looking to deliver a traditional building project. All applicants will therefore be required to provide information on their background and experience, supported by photographs of their work and referees, which will be processed through the Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors who are working in partnership with CSCS in this initiative. FTMRC see this development as a significant next step in their efforts to raise quality

standards in the metal roofing sector. Applications made direct to CSCS will simply be referred back to the FTMRC, in an effort to ensure that only those contractors with the appropriate skills and competence are issued with the card. Applicants will need to have passed the CITB Health & Safety (Working at Heights) test within the last two years to have their application approved. Further details and application forms are available from the FTMRC (info@ftmrc.co.uk) telephone 01342 301627 Significant client endorsement for the leadworkers card has recently come in the form of the announcement from English Heritage that the upcoming Audley End project will include a specification that only holders of the Heritage Skills Specialist Leadworker card will be considered for the substantial lead installation work required and it is hoped the hard metals card will quickly receive the same level of status and credibility among the major heritage and traditional roofing client groups.

Cutting Edge

Security and ProtectionDesigned for Flagship West End Development

Occupiers and visitors at 10 Portman Square, a prestigious new West End retail and office development delivered by British Land, will be protected by fully integrated life safety and security systems engineered and installed by Reflex systems.

John Pye, Managing Director of Reflex systems, said "We worked closely with consultants and building contractors from start to finish to ensure that all life safety and security met the stringent compliance standards. We also kept one eye on the future when considering the longer term needs of the building owners, operators and tenants.”

Increased battery capacity and upgraded power supplies for improved system availability

The new SPC6350 and SPC5350 intruder detection panels from Security Products from Siemens have received VdS-C approval in accordance with the VdS 2252 standard for alarm control and indicating equipment. In addition, they are the first of their type with natively integrated VdS 2463-approved alarm transmission equipment. This greatly reduces costs since no external communicator is necessary in VdS-C-approved installations. The Ethernet and backup GPRS transmission paths used by the panels are approved in accordance with VdS 2471, and the alarm communication protocol is approved in accordance with VdS 2465. As a result, setting up communication with alarm receivers is straightforward, and high-security IP-based alarm transmission is guaranteed. The spacious housings used for the new panels accommodate two sets of batteries, offering an increase in battery capacity of 217% compared with the previous model. The gap between the housing and the wall is now 18 mm, which greatly simplifies the routing and installation of cables. The power supplies for the panels have been upgraded as well, now providing a 12 V auxiliary supply rated at 2.2 A. Eight separately fused outputs ensure maximum system availability not only during normal operation, but also during maintenance. The new hardware is complemented by version 3.4 of the SPC firmware. Lower vibration and a reduced power-to-weight ratio have been cited by Hilti as two key performance developments in its new, next generation 8 kg combihammer. The TE 80-ATC AVR features the company's Active Vibration Reduction system which has cut the tri-axial measurement to 7.5 m/s2, meaning an operative can drill 696 holes-perday (based on a 25 mm diameter to 100 mm depth) before reaching exposure limit value (ELV). In addition a drilling speed of 360 revolutions per minute (rpm), and a 1,700 watt motor achieves an impressive performance-to-weight ratio by creating a single impact energy of 11.5 joules and a hammering speed of 2760 blows per minute. Other improvements include a new, larger slip clutch and a unique air cooling concept that reduces the working temperature of the tool and cuts dust intake.
