At my wellness clinic I’m often asked which products are going to make my clients look 10 years younger, zap spots or smooth wrinkles. As a Nutritional Therapist, I know that the secret to great skin comes from within. Skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, premature wrinkles and rosacea may be caused by imbalances in the microbiome, that is, the delicate balance of the microorganisms that live within us and the overall health of our digestive system. Improvement in the balance of the microbiome, digestive healing, elimination of processed foods and reduction in stress may all help to restore this delicate balance and in turn, improve skin health. A Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist can tailor a ‘digestive balance’ plan suitable for each individual’s needs, but here are some of my top general tips for creating radiance from within.

Optimise omegas Omega 3 fats are required for the flexibility of the skin cells, and help with inflammatory skin conditions. Unfortunately our average western diet is much higher in the proinflammatory fats. Correct the balance by including high omega 3 foods in the diet such as wild or line caught oily fish, flaxseed, flax oil, and my personal favourite skin food, avocado. Cut out the sugar Refined sugars and simple carbohydrates promote the production of Advanced Glycation End Products, shortened quite aptly to AGEs. These AGEs make collagen inflexible and also create free radical damage to the skin cells. By eliminating refined sugars and processed simple carbohydrates such as white bread and pasta, your client can go a long way towards promoting healthy collagen production and great looking skin.

Protect telomeres Each time a cell replicates, part of the chromosome called the telomere shortens and this relates to cellular ageing. Eating a diet rich in a rainbow of organic vegetables and fruits can help provide nutrients, phytonutrients and antioxidants known to protect the telomere from shortening. Interview with Suzy Clarke Tell us about your journey into the make-up industry? I studied Media Makeup at college and then went onto study a degree in Special Effects makeup at University. I was really interested in prosthetics and SFX and wanted to work on creating creatures for films/TV but while at University I realised I was always drawn to creating more beautiful makeup and fashion shoots so I pursued this path instead. I started off by working at a photographic makeover studio to build up my speed and practice working on different faces. I did a lot of unpaid test shoots to create a professional portfolio which then lead on to paid work with photographers and companies.

What is your advice for those trying to break into the make-up artist industry? Persistence and practise are the two key pieces of advice I would give to any new makeup artist.You can never practice enough. There are so many different eye shapes, skin types and skin tones out there that you should try to practice on as many people as you can. Also makeup trends are always evolving so practicing is vital to keep up with the rest of the Makeup Artists. The industry is very hard to break into so persistence is paramount. If you persist with it by contacting other Makeup Artists, Photographers, Agencies, Production companies eventually something will happen. They say it takes ten years to become an overnight success and I do believe that.

How do you build your client base? Your client base depends on your standard of work and professionalism, if a client likes you and your work they will recommend you to others. This is how I built up my client base, with regular clients recommending me to others who then recommended me again.

Do you have any ‘must-have’ items to put into the make-up kit of someone starting out? My must have items have got to be: a blending brush which is vital to anyone’s makeup kit and MACs face and body foundation as it's such a versatile product. Lastly a good highlighter, something to make the skin dewy and fresh, like Illamasqua's Gleam or MAC strobe cream.

What do you look out for in a great beauty product?

Something long lasting, a product that has good durability and strong pigment. There's nothing worse than swatching a product that seems gorgeous but once applied it loses all its pigment or fades away almost instantly. I'm always testing new products on myself first before using them on jobs for this very reason.

Any favourite brands?

There are so many brilliant brands but I would say Illamasqua is definitely one of my absolute favourites. The brand is so experimental and they have such an exciting colour range and quality of product. Sleek products are also a regular in my kit, it's a fantastic high street brand. The pigments are amazing, they have a good range to suit all skin tones.

Tell me about the look you most like to create on a client and why? The look I create on clients is really personal to each client because everyone is so different with their style and facial features. If I had to pick one of my favourite looks, it would be a soft neutral smokey eye and my simple sculpt, which is a natural version of the contour/highlight. A small amount of definition and sculpting of the bone structure really brings out the beauty of a client which is what I love doing.

Any favourite or memorable shoots?

One of my favourite shoots was in a Karaoke Night Club called K2 in Manchester’s China Town. This location was so fun to shoot in, there are four floors full of different karaoke rooms. Each room is decorated differently with neon lights and mirrored walls, the decor just made the shoot so interesting. I'm looking forward to more memorable shoots in the future.

Summer Shades Our beauty team have been searching high and low to find the looks, trends and colours that you and your clients will love for the summer.

Pinky Promise Ditch the garish pink, and opt for a more subtle, pretty pink tone. Pair this lovely lip colour with muted, simple makeup to really be on trend with the catwalks. This look is all about being feminine.

Turquoise tones scream tropical beaches and holidays, and what better way to get you in the mood for the changing weather? This look can be achieved with liners or eye shadows and is guaranteed to make a statement.


High Shine Say no more to heavily-powdered matt skin complexions that are decidedly dewy seem to be all over the catwalks for this season. Careful you don’t over-do this look though, there is a danger of looking greasy or sweaty, which certainly is a look you want to avoid! Soil Association Organic Market Report shows health and beauty sales up 20% The Soil Association’s Organic Market report reveals UK sales of certified organic health and beauty products increased by 20% in 2014 to £44.6 million. The number of Soil Association symbol holders increased by 51% while export revenue of UK companies in this sector topped £10 million for the first time. Overall, sales of organic products (including groceries, catering, beauty and textiles) increased by 4% in 2014. The new figures announced today (24 February 2015) show shoppers spent an extra £1.4 million a week on organic products and the organic market exceeded £1.86 billion.

A number of organic beauty brands have grown significantly in the past year through product innovation, export and targeted launches. Neal's Yard Remedies is the leading organic beauty brand in the UK and internationally, with UK sales up 12%. Essential Care, one of the industry’s pioneers, recently rebranded to Odylique targeting the large numbers of women with sensitive or allergy-prone skin. It has invested in new machinery to meet growing demand, and exports have jumped 50% year on year. Last year saw its extension into the US, Canada and Asia. Pai Skincare, the first company to specialise in organic facial and bodycare products for sensitive skin, also saw its sales double in 2014.

Organic beauty now appeals to a much wider group of consumers, supported by initiatives like the Soil Association’s Organic Beauty Week, which are helping to move organic beauty into the mainstream and enable more consumers to discover the benefits of these products. Leading organic brands are also increasingly looking beyond the environmentally conscious core consumers that originally drove the market to appeal to a wider, less ideologically driven public looking for more natural products that work. The overall UK organic market is expected to grow steadily again in 2015 and should break the £2 billion barrier in 2016.” The strong demand for organic personal care products is reflected by the competitive market for ingredient suppliers. Five of the top ten Soil Association Certification licensees in this sector – Earthoil Plantations, the Kerfoot Group, Statfold Seed Oil, the Stephenson Group and Azelis UK Life Sciences – are specialist suppliers of oils, herbal extracts and other ingredients. Their combined organic turnover is over £9.3 million. Consumer research recently published by Organic Monitor revealed that 90% of UK consumers who buy natural and organic health and beauty products say ‘avoidance of synthetic chemicals’ is important or very important to them. Certification is increasingly important too, with 43% saying they look for assurance symbols and logos on personal care products – up from 33% in 2007. The Soil Association symbol is the most sought after for certified products, with nearly 30% of shoppers saying they look for it. Overall, the mood in business is confident with 63% of leading businesses predicting growth in 2015 and six out of ten of these (62%) anticipating double-digit growth.

Standing out in the increasingly crowded health and beauty marketplace used to be difficult. Salons would struggle to find their niche, their look, but that has now become just a little bit easier thanks to a devoted entrepreneur with a flair for style and culture through his new, retro-inspired business venture. Dimitri Matheou made barbering his life for over 30 years. He owns 6 successful shops already, but a quest to find a barbers pole changed his life and put him on a path to a whole new adventure. Whilst looking to make one of his salons stand out, Dimitri found himself searching high and low for a traditional red, white (and sometimes blue) barber’s pole. The poles used to sit outside hairdressers in days gone by to advertise the location of a Gents barbers. He quickly found the cost of an antique pole was way beyond what he was expecting.
