TOP THINGS TO SEE AND DO AT CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK 2024

21 – 23 MAY 2024

Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) returns to London from 21 – 23 May 2024, standing as one of the leading international design festivals, FREE to all visitors (register now).

This year’s edition boasts the most extensive programme to date, featuring a greater number of exhibition venues, brands, showrooms and installations than ever before. This expansion firmly establishes the festival as the goto destination for specification within the architecture and design community.

Amidst a rich tapestry of new launches, presentations and events, here’s a round-up of the top things to see and do at the May event; from innovative farming by-product

designs and the renaissance of natural stone and wood to AIcrafted cocktails and industry discussions on neurodiversity.

NEW COLLECTIONS

Fritz Hansen will reveal its new collection at its Cowcross Street showroom in a special feature titled ‘Inviting Workspaces’. Curated to explore both commercial and residential working environments, the exhibit will display furniture and accessories from designers including Jaime Hayon and Jørn Utzon.

At its Great Sutton Street showroom, Domus will present a colourful exhibit of tile designs created by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby to celebrate their 10-year collaboration with its brand partner Mutina. The installation will also feature a new collection named ‘Time’.

In the British Collection (St James’s Church), SCP will launch a new Peonia armchair by Wilkinson and Rivera, a low-lying sculptural armchair made at a specialist factory in Norfolk, using 100% natural and sustainable materials. Meanwhile, Another Country will showcase its new ‘Series Five’ furniture inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement.

At Detail at the Order of St John, Omexco will unveil three new ranges, including the Archipelago design crafted from Capiz shells and shimmering mica minerals. While Arte presents its new Lani collection, featuring hand-crafted designs inlaid or embroidered with rattan and raffia, Kasthall will return with its new Vichy collection, a modern interpretation of the classic gingham pattern. Wallpaper design studio Erica Wakerly has teamed up with Sixteen3 to debut a new fabric collection, which will be shown at the latter’s Bastwick Street showroom as part of a pop-up that examines the evolving nature of workspaces

Joining CDW and the neighbourhood for the first time is British lighting manufacturer J. Adams & Co, launching its new St John Street showroom just in time for the festival. Collaborating

with tile expert Solus, the in-house team has repurposed materials from the site and factory offcuts to create stunning terrazzo tiles and worktops. Also new to the festival is Pooky Lighting, showcasing its new collection of rechargeable lights at Light at House of Detention.

NEW CREATIVES

CDW continues its tradition of championing emerging talent, spotlighting a diverse range of newcomers this year. Showing at Platform (70 Cowcross Street), Selfish Customs collaborates with local makers in East Anglia, repurposing farming by-products such as raw fleece, reed and barley straw to create unique homeware. Visitors can explore the studio’s creations alongside Colombian art historian-turned-designer Manuela Cabrales, who is launching shawls, trousers and handcrafted lamps using materials like lotus fibre and orange peels. Also featured is Barcelona-based Isabel Francoy’s La Sobremesa collection, which blends wicker weaving and glassblowing with modern design.

At Light, designer Tabitha Bargh will present her new lighting collection titled ‘Poly’. Utilising waste estate

agent advertising boards made from Correx, typically unsustainable and non-biodegradable polypropylene, Bargh reimagines sustainability, crafting each piece with precision in her Brighton studio. In the British Collection, Granite + Smoke will introduce its new hand-tufted rugs created in collaboration with Roger Oates Design. Crafted from 100% British blended wool, each rug undergoes meticulous handfinishing in Devon after being spun and dyed in Yorkshire.

TREND: THE NEW STONE AGE

Stone is currently experiencing a renaissance, emerging as a highly sought-after material in the realms of architecture and design. With prestigious hospitality projects like The Ivy, Annabel’s and Harry’s Bar under its belt, Spectra Stone excels in sourcing, engineering and fitting natural and semi-precious stone in a manner that transcends mere functionality, elevating it to the realm of artistry. The British company will showcase its most exclusive collection of marble species at Old Sessions House.

Also, keep an eye out for two remarkable installations celebrating natural stone on Clerkenwell Green. British suppliers Albion Stone and Hutton Stone have commissioned architects Artefact to design ‘Brick from a Stone’, showcasing stone bricks being launched by both companies this year and illustrating the low-energy process involved in producing them. On 23 May at 10:00, visitors can also join a dedicated talk on this subject matter led by a panel of experts – including Amin Taha of Groupwork and Benedetta Rogers of Artefact – at 15 Clerkenwell Close.

Meanwhile, Stone Federation has teamed up with Squire and Partners to create an explorative structure named ‘Stone Tapestry: Beyond

the Surface’. This installation aims to demonstrate the sustainability, versatility and beauty of natural stone, featuring materials not only from Albion Stone and Hutton Stone but also from Britannicus Stone, Dunhouse Quarry and Tradstocks.

TREND: FOR THE LOVE OF WOOD

Wood remains a prominent material for many brands at CDW this year, particularly in the British Collection. Benchmark will bring a new adaptable storage system, developed with Foster + Partners, to the festival, featuring full carbon footprint labelling, a lifetime repair service and a take-back scheme.

Independent makers such as Matthew Burt and Dovetailors transform furniture into art forms. The former will present ‘Making from the Collection’, offering its timeless designs as part of a madeto-order service, while the latter will showcase a new range of stools with organic shapes resembling sculpted wood. In addition to established businesses, a new wave of British furniture designers emerges. Collinson embraces classic English craft and understated luxury with its freestanding kitchen and shelving unit, while James UK will

unveil its Holton chair, reviving traditional Windsor chair-making with a contemporary aesthetic that celebrates joinery as art.

WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS

Neurodiversity has emerged as a leading topic gaining momentum among architects and designers, driven by the ambition to create environments that cater to diverse needs. On 22 May (14:00) in Spa Fields, as part of Conversations at Clerkenwell, Ultrafabrics will assemble a panel of experts from Gensler, Squire and Partners, Pantone, and the founder of Seedlip and The Hidden 20% podcast. They will delve into how multisensory design can transform and enrich our interactions with the world, particularly in workplaces and public spaces.

6

AllSfär is also addressing this important subject with a talk at its Baltic Street East showroom. Scheduled for 22 May at 15:30, the session will be led by the founders of the neurodiversity consultancy ZoneND, focusing on designing for the senses and why it is the key to positive wellbeing and neuroinclusive practice.

Workplace technology specialist LeftBrain will host a pop-up showroom at Second Home during the festival. Themed ‘The Future of the Digital Workspace’, the line-up includes talks, networking events and consultations. Look out for partners including The School of Life and Dropbox; the former will lead a talk on ‘Emotional Intelligence at Work’, while the latter will host a giveaway of a VR headset. Notably, there’s an evening party on 23 May, featuring bespoke AI-generated cocktails crafted by a mixologist.

Fringe partner Cult Vision on Goswell Road will collaborate with 2023 Shed of the Year winner Archie Proudfoot on a live installation in its shop window throughout CDW. The artist will employ gold leaf to create mirrored surfaces on the glass, playing with reflections of the viewer and the cityscape behind them. Simultaneously, classic spring imagery will be incorporated, offering a unique visual experience.

Also as part of the Fringe programme, Pilbrow and Partners will open its doors with a life drawing class on 22 May at 18:00. This event will feature life models seated among architectural models and material samples, inviting participants to capture the interplay between architecture and the human scale. The session will be guided by artist Brian Sayers and is free to attend (advance booking required).

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS

This year, CDW has introduced three international pavilions to the festival. The Italian Collection will feature 31 brands on the first floor of Design Fields, showcasing furniture, lighting and textiles. Catapult will host the German Collection, presenting its country’s acclaimed brands and furniture, while the Danish Collection will take over the magnificent Paxton Locher House, highlighting the finest in Danish design, including Linie Design, Nordlux, Ro Collection and Sika Design. Ceramics of Italy is also back on St John’s Square with a great line-up of tile experts, from Ninefifty to La Fabbrica and Acquario Due.

A LABOUR OF LOVEBROMLEY OLD TOWN HALL A HERITAGE PROJECT CASE STUDY

Designed to bring business and investment into the local community, the redevelopment of the iconic Bromley Old Town Hall has proved a huge success.

Restored to its former glory during 2021/22, the building is now a busy hub with 73,000 sq ft of modern Clockwise flexible co-worker offices, a 23-bed, quirky boutique hotel, Brama and a Dorothy & Marshall Restaurant.

As main contractor for the project, WFC had our work cut out. The building had remained empty since 2009, deemed a heritage write-off due to water ingress issues and disuse. We had to find innovative solutions to address these issues while maintaining the heritage integrity of the structure.

Our team conducted thorough investigations, implemented effective waterproofing measures, and collaborated with structural engineers to ensure the building’s long-term stability.

The project required close collaboration, scheduling, and effective communication to coordinate multiple trades, including client direct trades with our own works package and programme.

The base build contractor faced delays, which had a direct impact on our own programme. To mitigate these delays, we had to re-sequence our works. We worked closely with the client and other subcontractors to adjust the schedule, allowing for sectional completion of areas to accommodate the ongoing challenges, ensuring the project could progress despite the setbacks.

To manage multiple trades effectively, we established a robust communication network, holding regular meetings with all stakeholders involved. This ensured that everyone was updated on the project progress, addressed any potential clashes, and facilitated smooth coordination between trades.

To overcome the water ingress issues, we collaborated closely with specialists in heritage restoration and waterproofing.

We utilized modern waterproofing technologies while ensuring their compatibility with the heritage structure. By carefully addressing the source of the water ingress and implementing effective solutions, we were able to safeguard the building and preserve its historical value.

10

Restoration of some of the outstanding original design features included four giant fluted concrete columns clad in green marble, restoration to the original terrazzo floor, and to stone architrave and fireplaces. New modern finishes were seamlessly integrated with the existing features to create a modern, yet characterful working environment.

Extensive heritage restoration was painstakingly undertaken by our specialist conservation subcontractor. The renovation includes preserving and reinstating the wood panelling in the old Courthouse, the former Council Chambers, former chapel (which had been open to the elements for some years), and the old council committee rooms.

The original decorative lime plaster was in poor condition following years of neglect but was restored to its former glory, Similarly, the heritage paintwork was expertly

bought back to life. Many of the intricate and ornate original mouldings were also damaged or missing, and we engaged with British Mouldings to replicate and repair these key elements.

The new paintwork is indistinguishable from the old in the original Old Courthouse with its high vaulted roof. Below the restaurant, the toilets are constructed in the old holding cells. The original stairs up to the dock are still in place and the old door to the safe remains for posterity. Many of the original feature chandeliers were retained and refurbished to ensure they can be enjoyed for many years to come.

There was complete replacement of the entire mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. This included new main switchboards and distribution and centralised plant for heating and hot water.

On a high note, interior designers Fusion Interiors Group (FIG) won the award for ‘Best Mixed Use Interior’, Kent for Bromley Old Town Hall, in the 30th UK Property Awards 2023/24, part of International Property Awards.

We are awarding ourselves a gold star for the project which stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving heritage while delivering a high-quality fit out. Despite the challenges and the setbacks, our team successfully completed this major project by employing effective coordination, communication, flexibility, and innovative solutions.

With a 47-year track record of delivering high-quality main contractor services, the team at WFC believe that its role as a fitout contractor is to support the objectives of its clients and their architects and designers. We have the expertise and resources to complete complex refurbishment and fit-out contracts to a high standard, working in collaboration with our clients. Our aim is to make the best use of client budgets and to complete projects on time, however challenging the timescale.

AN ECCENTRIC CLASSIC SANCTUARY INTERIOR DESIGN BY PLUS DESIGN WITH COVET HOUSE PIECES

A private residence of around 800 square meters. This property contains four bedrooms, a living room, dining room, lounge, study, beauty salon, and gym and is located in the center of Jakarta, Indonesia.

The confident combination of themes, materials, and textures results in a subtle glitz. In a mixture of paradoxes, modern forms are contrasted with classic furnishings. Vibrant pops of color, both deep and dazzling, are strewn throughout the house. Covet House’s pieces were essential in creating this exquisite, lux look.

CLUBHOUSE

The exclusive clubhouse is meant to amaze, with all of its glitz and gloss. It features a bright atmosphere with floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors, dominated by black and gray tones and accentuated with gold tones and contemporary furnishings. It is ideal for organizing exclusive parties and game evenings with family and friends, as it is divided into two spaces, a bar and a living room.

With high-quality goods like the Kelly Bar Chairs, inspired by the sculpted arches from the bar in the classic movie Casablanca, it’s a

12

timeless and unforgettable piece, a staple item and incontestable symbol of the Essential Home brand, this luxury design does not skimp on comfort and elegance.

RESIDENTIAL

The confidence, the materials, the blend of textures with vivid hues, and the deep sparkles scattered throughout the items make this private residence the envy of any luxury hotel. The quality and attractiveness of the goods used in a project are key factors to consider when creating a design of this proportions.

The entrance embraces two iconic pieces from Brabbu, the Andes armchair, a mid-century modern furniture item that pays tribute to the people native of the Andes Mountains. The soft upholstery is matched in with Koi Side Table, with a base in brushed aged brass and a top in marble, this round side table adds a refined elegance and modern touch to this more classic interior design.

The living room exemplifies all that is wonderful about quirkiness, beginning with the golden tones found in the lovely table and

amazing lamp. The organically shaped Eden Gold Center Table from Boca do Lobo is the center stage of this room. This table represents a part of the tree of knowledge and the tale of the birth of desire. Fully made of polished casted brass, with a delicately engraved top exposing the heart of a golden tree to the very heart of the living room.

Combined with the light tones of the sofas and cupboards to provide the warmth and cosiness that we all need in a living room. The dining

room is notable for the exquisite pink velvets utilized in the seats, the polished silver cabinets, and the stunning crystal lamp that embodies the project’s grandeur.

Moving on to the bedroom, we can see that good taste is still at the forefront of the project, despite the fact that this is a much more private space where the tranquility of neutral tones is essential for relaxation. The bedrooms have a touch of sophistication in the combination of diverse materials, the huge ceiling light, and the high curtains that complement the large windows, never forgetting the splendor.

WHY GOOD POSTURE DOESN’T MATTER

Family-owned ergonomic furniture experts, Back in Action, explore why we need to be talking about balance.

It has long been assumed that bad posture or slouching was the route of back pain. However, Back in Action is here to dispel this and instead tell us that posture is less important and that we should be talking about balance.

Concentrating solely on posture and keeping your back straight can cause people to stiffen up, whereas Back in Action encourages movement and balance as the focus for back health. Lucinda Newbound, Senior Ergonomic Expert for Back in Action, explains, ‘Nearly all back problems can be solved with movement. Stop trying to focus on sitting up straight, as this is causing your body to not move. Engage your core and balance instead.’

Kneeling chairs, balance balls or seating cushions will engage your core and force you to balance when sitting while also ensuring your body continues to move which is vital. Movement can help ease back pain by stretching tight muscles as well as strengthening them. By looking after your core and back muscles, it can help to support your back and as a result will benefit your posture without having to focus on it. If you minimise activity, it’s likely to lead to problems in the long term. Ensuring your back and core muscles are strong, will, in the long term, work towards keeping your back healthy.

Nell Mead, Physiotherapist, further explains the reason movement is so vital, ‘As adults, we are made of around 65% water. Water carries nutrients to our cells, flushes away the waste products of metabolism, feeds our joint cartilage and provides lubrication that allows our muscles and connective tissue to glide and slide smoothly. But water can only do all this when it is flowing freely. And what encourages flow? Movement and pressure change. Getting up, sitting down, moving,

and stretching creates a pump. Motion spreads a sort of biological lotion to keep you healthy, with less damage and less pain, whereas excessive focus on static postures (however beautifully aligned) tends to lead to tension and stagnation.’

Nell Mead recommends The Mobiliser by Back In Action. She says, ‘this is a piece of kit that you use at home – it encourages the individual joints to “mobilise” – to stretch and move and become more compliant.’ Consistent movement is extremely important and is encouraged through all Back in Action products, not only the Mobiliser. From desks, chairs, sofas, beds and accessories, Back in Action’s furniture incorporates movement from a gentle tilt such as the Varier Social Chair to total mobilisation with Varier Move Stool. The ergonomic furniture specialists champion movement and continue to challenge conventional furniture and provide unorthodox unparalleled comfort for the UK market.

The collection is made up of the Copenhagen, Ikast, Magnus, Kenny and Odense seats.

The Ikast Dining Chair is crafted from solid wood and luxurious faux leather. The dark walnut wood perfectly complements the black faux leather of the seat.

The Magnus oozes sophistication with its solid wood base and PU leather upholstery. It’s subtle zig zag arms add a striking modern touch.

FRANCESCO CALVIDINI COLLEZIONE

All the fabrics are carefully constructed, woven and finished in Italy’s main textile manufacturing zone, followed by traditional hand sewing techniques, after which we have a rigorous checking programme.

The amazing Calvidini fabrics are made from the highest quality long staple Egyptian cotton which is spun, woven, dyed and finished in Italy, a location which is unique as a production base being the only place in the world that can achieve such incredibly superior standards.

All the products offered in the range are designed in house and are exclusive to Francesco Calvidini Collezione. We are expert at interpreting and individually creating any design our clients can imagine, with complete flexibility on sizing. In addition our rigorous inspection procedures ensure exacting hemming quality.

Moreover there are fabric counts from 300 threads per sq. inch right through to 1000 count and even 1400 threads p.s.i. To create high thread counts we use much finer yarns, which need very sophisticated machinery to produce. These create remarkable results not available from other manufacturers in any part of the world.

It is important to stress that high thread count should not be the only barometer for specifying bedlinen. Thread count on its own does not convey many of the factors that comprise the end product. How the cotton is treated is a much more decisive factor and Calvidini Collezione are the premium manufacturer for top end results and our exclusive eco friendly finishing techniques create bedlinen with an exceptional handle and touch for a unique sleeping experience. In addition, these processes ensure that washing is easy and especially the ironing is much faster than normal fabric.

WHAT MAKES THE ALBION BATH COMPANY UNIQUE?

The bathroom is one of the most important spaces in our homes, it is not just a mere wash space, but a place that many of us use to relax and unwind. We talk to Phil Etherden, Managing Director behind Essex-based The Albion Bath Co, about what sets their luxurious products apart from the competition.

ISO-ENAMEL EXCLUSIVE MATERIAL

When we launched The Albion Bath Co in 1996, our mission since conception has been to create the ultimate in luxurious bath tubs that combine the best qualities of cast iron but with modern technology. Back then, there were only two materials that were available at the time; acrylic and cast iron. Acrylic, which is a soft plastic, became popular in the 1970’s due to ease of manufacture and low cost. However, acrylic’s properties fell short of what the customer wanted, whether

it was an issue with its strength, overall look, or the fact it was easy to scratch. These shortcomings remain true to this day.

Apollo Doubled Ended Free-standing bath. from £3,586.00 Pictured above Left: Tubby Too Double Ended Bath shown in Farrow & Ball Pigeon from £2399.00. Above Right Tubby Torre Plinth Bath from £2860.00.

Cast Iron baths have been used for over 120 years. Although often considered as the ‘real thing’, cast iron has many drawbacks, such as excessive weight, incredible heat loss from the bathing water and are also prone to surface chipping. Homeowners also found that liquid cleaners would ruin the white interior surface. So, after two years of intensive development, I formed a new unique material, IsoEnamel. This was developed from an amalgam of special minerals and stone powders, which ensures that our baths will retain heat in the bathing water, giving bathers the ultimate luxurious experience for longer. It is also less than half the weight of cast iron - so customers can have the cast iron look without having to spend hundreds on reinforcing their bathroom floor. Believe it or not, the average weight of an Albion tub is a mere 70kg.

Our exclusive material will happily stand up to all cleaning products, even limescale removers, with no fear of discolouration, scratching or chipping. Over the years it has allowed us to faithfully recreate the shapes of iconic classical bath

designs

that other manufacturing materials simply cannot accommodate.

BRITISH MANUFACTURED BATHS, FURNITURE AND SHOWERS

Every single Albion bath is handmade in our UK-based factory. We are passionate about preserving manufacturing in the UK. By being involved at every stage of a product, from conception to final creation, we can ensure we produce the

highest quality products. We are also proud to sell directly from our Essex showroom, which allows us to cater for specific needs and requests so that each Albion product has a personal touch, something that is often lost in today’s internet age.

We also offer a collection of highquality wooden vanity units to compliment our baths, again all handmade to order from our Essex workshop. These are available in a range of sizes from 450mm1500mm, making them suitable for any space, from small cloakrooms right through to super-sized bathrooms. Storage is a crucial part of any bathroom, but it often gets overlooked. With five designs to choose from including double and single basin options, customers will be able to find a solution to perfectly suit their space. Each unit is painted by our own skilled craftsmen using a specialist polyurethane paint that’s ideal for a bathroom.

We are also very proud that our elegant frameless shower enclosures are manufactured from our Essex factory. At Albion, we make our shower enclosures from 10mm thick toughened glass with the added process of post annealing. This provides superior rigidity and durability. All edges, whether exposed or not, are bevelled and polished - providing a luxury

finish with superior optical appearance. It’s also worth noting that our fittings are made from 316 marine grade stainless steel. So even with harsh cleaning chemicals and aggressive limescale remover, we can be confident our products are corrosion-free and will look pristine for years to come. We offer a vast range of sizes and formats to suit almost every bathroom configuration. From side or corner entry and ‘walk in’ enclosures, through to tray or non-tray mounting of the glass, there is shower format to suit everyone.

ENDLESS COLOUR CHOICE

Most of our baths and all of our vanity units can be colour matched to any Farrow & Ball or Dulux Trade colour, meaning customers can make their tub the star of the show with a bold stand-out shade, or choose to coordinate their bath with their vanity and the surrounding bathroom decor. All we need is a colour code or name and we’ll do the rest. The spraying process gives a smooth finish with a slight sheen. It is hard wearing, washable and if you fancy a change of colour in the future, the surface can be painted over.

In addition to the Farrow & Ball and Dulux Trade colours, we also offer our exclusive ‘burnished’ finishes in gold, iron or bronze for our baths. These luxurious metallic finishes make a great statement in a bathroom and are hugely fashionable at the moment, giving a real sense of getting back to base materials. Our luxurious burnished finishes are a popular option for anyone looking for a solid, industrial warehouse look and make a stylish focal point. Alternatively, they also look surprisingly at home in more traditional schemes, and I have seen them work really well in country houses, where the bronze or gold finishes have been paired with bold floral or simple striped wallpapers to give an opulent feel.

A BATH TUB FOR ANY SPACE

Small and large free standing baths are now the ‘go to’ for the luxury bathroom. Whether your bathroom is space challenged or generous in its dimensions, a free standing or roll top bath will give your sanctuary that touch of understated elegance. Freestanding baths are available in many styles, single or double ended, with many possible feet or plinth options to choose from. There are also a great range of versatile, over-bath shower systems available meaning one can achieve a luxurious spa-like feel which is still practical for family life too. We’ve got all of the bases covered with bath tubs available in sizes from 1200mm through to 2000mm long.

At Albion, we’re always looking to push the boundaries of bathing enjoyment. We wanted to get the fun factor of a free-standing tub into a small bathroom - so the Tubby roll top bath was born. With its generous depth, you can get fully submerged but at only 1200mm long, it can grace a small space that may otherwise be redundant. Amazingly, the Tubby has created a trend for putting a small bath into bedrooms. I guess it’s testament to the appeal and versatility of this lovely bath tub.

FIVE TRENDS FROM CALYPSO BATHROOMS SPRING 2024 LAUNCH

Calypso Bathrooms, leading premium British bathroom furniture brand, proudly launches its highly anticipated spring collection for 2024. Expanding upon the brand’s already extensive offerings, the launch provides design-led homeowners with an even broader selection of high-quality, trend-led bathroom furniture solutions.

The launch brings texture to the forefront of bathroom design with the introduction of the horizontally fluted Petra, and Levanto Fluted vanity collections. The launch also includes three brand new LED mirrors, Adria, Andrina, and Ostra, which play with shape, and a carefully curated array of new furniture, finishes, brassware, ceramics, and hardware, seamlessly blending traditional style with modern functionality.

Charlotte Tilby, Head of Marketing at Calypso Bathrooms, provides valuable insights into five key trends and products from the latest collection.

1. Wonderful Woodgrains

The desire for spa like bathrooms has been rapidly growing in recent years with homeowners opting for natural woodgrain finishes, and gentle, rounded lines in bathroom design. This shift has also seen an increasing demand for texture in bathroom furniture such as fluted and slatted wood.

Calypso’s new Petra vanity collection offers mid-century sophistication with modern elegance and is available as wallhung vanity units in two sizes and a matching fluted Tall Wall Unit, available in Coral White, Tortona Oak, and Persian Walnut finishes. The Levanto wave-fronted vanity range also receives a modern update, now available in new layout

configurations and finishes with a fluted front design that further enhances the appeal of this popular range.

2. Seamless Spaces

Increasingly, the boundaries between bath, bed, and dressing spaces are blurring, akin to the open-plan concept seen in kitchen, dining, and living areas. As such, cohesive matching furniture across the home has driven demand for a wider array of colour options and finishes in the bathroom than ever before. Think matching your three-piece en-suite to your chest of drawers or wardrobe to create a feeling of expansion and connection throughout the more restful areas of your home.

Earthy greens and aquatic blues take the spotlight alongside softer cashmeres and neutrals with pink undertones. Matte finishes have also gained popularity for their tactile, light-diffusing properties, fostering a gentle ambience.

3. Mirror, Mirror

Accessories play a crucial role in transforming a space, such as strategically positioning mirrors to enhance lighting and create a more inviting atmosphere. Modern LED mirrors have become the goto-choice amongst homeowners, as they are fantastic at enriching

bathroom spaces with soft, ambient lighting and making compact spaces seem more spacious.

Calypso introduces three new LED Mirror ranges, available in a variety of sizes. Each mirror comes equipped with energy-efficient demister pads, ensuring a fog-free experience. These mirrors feature adaptive lighting options, allowing for effortless adjustment of LED brightness and temperature to create the perfect ambience, blending functionality with style.

4. Modern Heritage

Homeowners prefer lasting investments over frequent changes, focusing on durable, timeless designs. While paint and decor updates are simple, thoughtful selection of fittings is crucial, especially in less reversible areas like bathrooms. This trend involves updating traditional items with modern colours or finishes, especially in brassware, where alternatives compete with traditional chrome. These finishes subtly modernise bathrooms, even in heritage-style spaces.

5. Do-able Updates

There has been a notable increase in demand for ‘partial refurbs’ over full bathroom redesigns in recent times, with homeowners favouring accessible, simple, updates that cause minimal disruption and create more space in even the most compact of bathrooms. Updating the vanity, adding a mirror, or simply swapping out hardware have become popular solutions, offering a significant transformation without the need for extensive renovations. Within the launch, Calypso provide an array of space-saving product designs that enhance style and functionality while optimising space.

VICAIMA PRESENT ANOTHER DIMENSION FOR INTERIORS WITH DEKORDOR® 3D

Popular for over a decade, the Dekordor® 3D range from Vicaima has long been a first choice with specifiers of living and working spaces.

With its attractive textural and hard-wearing surface, ideal for contemporary surroundings as well as demanding locations; this competitively priced interior timber door or door kit has much to commend it for both modern private dwellings and social environments. Now, with innovation and inspiration firmly in mind, the range has been re-imagined for a new generation of specifiers, with no less than 15 tonal and textural options, making flexible design and performance, available to suit a wider range of project budgets.

While colours like the original horizontal Grey remain as popular today as it always was, a fresh palette has been introduced to satisfy modern trends and encompassing both vertical and horizontal textured faces. For those who seek the neutrality of crisp and light colours, Artic and Silver Oak blend perfectly with busy surroundings and make excellent use of light in small spaces. Conversely, where rich warm tones would be ideal and needed to emulate otherwise expensive alternatives, Chocolate, Urban and light Walnut provide the perfect solution. However, if the desire is to embrace a more monochrome look, new Carbon Black, Grey Oak or Cloud White could provide the answer.

Dekordor® 3D is not just about door appearance either. It can be provided in the full gambit of performance solutions from Vicaima. Manufactured with fire (whether FD30 or FD60), security (including dual scope and SBD accreditation) and acoustic certification (ranging from 34 to 45dB) the range can be supplied as part of a matching door assembly and with associated joinery such as skirting and wall panels. Furthermore, with flexible design options such as factory glazing, decorative grooves and inlays are also possible. In short tailored to your project needs, whatever they may be.

Mini roses show door handles in a completely new light. They are hardly noticeable on the door. As a result, the handle itself becomes more prominent, creating a fascinating interplay between the handle and the door.

Interior door sets with mini roses are currently available in stainless steel and brass. A standard door set consists of a pair of door handles and matching handle roses. Escutcheons, which are also available in a special version for bathroom doors, can be added if required.

Mister Shut based in Modugno (BA) has been operating in the armored door production sector since 1987.

MISTER SHUT

At the basis of the company policy is the commitment and enthusiasm of people who have been able to transform a small business into a leading company in the sector. “Innovation as the main tool of differentiation” for mister shut, this reflection translates into a continuous search for solutions and variations capable of offering its customers concrete answers to any need in a constantly evolving market.

The technology, projects, workforce and common commitment that characterize the production cycle are able to guarantee a high quality and safety standard without underestimating the value of aesthetic and performance customization of the product entirely made in Italy.

Mister Shut has wanted to undertake, since the early years, a cutting-edge path based on the

principle of continuous research into materials, technologies and design compatible with the constraints imposed by the performance standards of current regulations in terms of anti-intrusion and anti-burglary. This particular attention to the product has given rise to multiple and important national and international collaborations to redefine the design of products and

54

push them beyond the most current trends, collaborating with architects and attending trade fairs. Among the most relevant, we mention the one with the architect A. Castiglioni, author of the “Touch” project: a study aimed at creating innovative products with a refined design.

“the ideal door is the perfect combination of safety, functionality and elegance”.

The company has expanded the concept of security doors, transforming an exclusively functional element into a furnishing accessory. The door is no longer a product that simply separates rooms but becomes a product that stands out as an icon of style and

personality, managing to enhance any surrounding context. All this is made possible thanks to a highly flexible and specialized staff, the support of IT systems and advanced technology and the precious collaboration with national and international figures.

THE BRICK BY BRICK REGENERATION PROJECT

The rising costs of properties are affecting millions of families up and down the country, and Croydon town council felt that this project would be a small step towards making housing a more affordable and achievable goal. This development was 100% backed by the Croydon town council in the hopes that the 1,200 homes could be filled by anybody who once thought affordable housing would be a thing of the past.

We were awarded the task of supplying our rustic oak herringbone parquet flooring after

working extensively with the design and architectural teams to create the floor that met their design intent and made sure for it all the while to be sustainably produced. We supplied over 20 different sites, some entirely new build, others regeneration work. This meant working closely with multiple main contractors and sub-contractors throughout the multi-year project across Croydon. Our experienced and robust organisation for the production and delivery of the product including adhesive meant despite the number of different companies involved, all these sites

The Brick by Brick regeneration project was formed by Croydon town council to help combat the current housing crisis in the London area.
56

were able to work solely through us without any delays due to the flooring. Keeping a tightknit relationship with the multiple sites throughout the whole project also meant that we could monitor that our flooring was being used to the immaculate standard that we had envisioned going into this project.

The Brick By Brick developers wanted to ensure that all of the properties were designed with a high end appearance, making the residents feel as if they’d just invested in a luxury penthouse suite. This is why our herringbone styled flooring was always at the forefront of the organisation’s plans due to being able to give each home the spectacular opulence they required.

Herringbone flooring is popular for numerous reasons in both commercial and residential spaces. Known for its distinctive and elegant pattern, this flooring style is characterized by a series of rectangular planks or tiles arranged in a zigzag or V-shaped pattern, resembling the skeleton of a herring fish. This is how it coined the name herringbone.

One of the primary reasons people are drawn to herringbone flooring is its aesthetic appeal. The intricate pattern creates a sense of sophistication and visual interest in any room, which is exactly why this development decided it would be a perfect fit for their properties. Whether used in traditional or contemporary settings, herringbone flooring can instantly elevate the overall design, making it a versatile choice for various interior styles. Herringbone flooring also offers several practical benefits that contribute to its popularity. One of the key advantages is its durability. When installed correctly, the interlocking pattern provides additional stability and strength to the floor, making it more resistant to wear and tear over time. This makes herringbone flooring a suitable option for high traffic areas in homes and commercial spaces.

Furthermore, herringbone flooring can add a sense of space and dimension to a room. The diagonal lines of the pattern can visually expand smaller spaces and create an illusion of length, making it an

excellent choice for enhancing the overall atmosphere of a room. The talented inhouse designers of the development saw the potential the herringbone flooring had. The zig-zag pattern combined with the dark, rich tones of the board added a sense of affluence to the properties, and with this particular board having a rustic look and mild colour variation gave a great contrast to an otherwise modern feel to these spaces.

At The Solid Wood Flooring Company, we specialise in these large residential projects. Working with Berkeley Homes, Ballymore, various council regeneration schemes, along with other prestigious developers. If you’re working on a project and would like to discuss how we can help deliver a floor that meets budgetary restrictions while providing a luxurious quality, please get in touch.

BLURRING LINES BETWEEN

Now the April showers have faded into a distant memory, it’s time to talk about bringing the outdoors in and the indoors out.

With new floral and outdoor collections, we have some solutions to making your home feel fresher and your garden more refined.

Firstly floral, we tend to recommend marrying what is in season in the garden to your faux in the home. Faux floral is an easy and hassle-free way of creating life and atmosphere in the house without worrying about keeping something alive!

Meadow and Sissinghurst collections are perfect for the summer, both brimmed with billowing stems that look freshly cut from the garden. We’ve also introduced some new potted plants with more terracotta and grey pots that you can move in and out if you’re entertaining at home, shaking up the traditional dining table set up.

Rattan is a classic and a great way to merge your interior styles into your garden, we introduced the Roca white collection last year which is very clean cut and design-led. But the more traditional Sorrento collection with its more natural tone weave remains a firm favourite. Metal outdoor furniture can also be a great solution if you want more fluid and movable furniture.

Now we’ve upped our summer style, let’s hope the weather holds out!

PIUMATI: A NEW MURANO GLASS TABLE LAMPS COLLECTION

Piumati introduces new Murano Glass table lamps to its range of prestigious decorative lighting solutions: Chandeliers, Pendant Lights, Wall Sconces and Ceiling Lights.

SIX NEW MURANO GLASS TABLE LAMPS

The new table lamp collection proposes six differently designed models that combine modern styles with the ancient Murano tradition, creating a bridge between Venetian history and contemporary Italian design.

The distinctive value of PIUMATI handcrafted table lamps, is not only the excellence of their design and quality: the lamps are customizable in many different colors, lampshades and metal finishing, according to customers’ lighting project style.

THE ESSENCE OF ELEGANCE BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERNITY

We are in Venice, on the Murano island. Every morning the twenty craftsmen of our furnace gather in front of the incandescent mouths of the ovens and plan the day’s production.

The masters in the 4 work squares draw on stone blackboards the blown glass lighting fixtures they will give life to during an intense day of toil. In the meantime, our planners together with the designers trace the lines of the Chandeliers, Wall Sconces & Floor Lamps that make our production unique and exclusive.

PIUMATI is our vision of how Murano Glass tradition should be expressed at its maximum. Piumati’s aim is to value the blown glass art, with the ultimate purpose to celebrate the uniqueness of our Venetian heritage and the Italian one as a result.

The brand PIUMATI owes its name to a historical type of Murano glass processing of the 17th century obtained by applying hot glass threads of another color around a blown glass that, combed up and down, take on an elegant feather pattern, from which derives the name of “piumati”, that means “feathered”.

AN EXTENSIVE AND UNIQUE INTERIOR FROM BLUERIDGE DESIGN

Blueridge Design recently completed works on a new 30 room London Hotel off Sloane Square.

The project involved the repurposing of an existing structure from Cadogan Estates. The build was extensive and involved adding a basement and an additional sixth storey to house the Restaurant. This involved removing the internal structure and support the façade whilst the internal works were added.

The project was a first venture into the elite London Hotel market for a successful, but very secretive and exclusive, Parisian Hotelier. London based Architects Reardon Smith were the lead architects for the project working closely with a

French Designer whose background includes work for The Palace of Versailles in France. The interior is a unique blend of French and Colonial British Design.

Blueridge worked with the same French Designer on an apartment refurbishment project in Eaton Square during lockdown. Delivering bespoke overlay oak chevron wood flooring to his design. Classically finishing with a wax finish and detailed border designs. As a result, Blueridge were invited to work on the Hotel project as a direct employ of Cadogan under the design management of the French team, outside of the main contractor.

A 6 level wooden staircase and landings winding around the period central elevator which featured a Blueridge wood interior was constructed by Blueridge. Over

170 Treads were hand made with book match design from prime oak imported from Italy and finished with a tinted wax finish to the French design teams instructions. The tread nosing featured a classic profile that required bespoke moulding to meet the design. Each landing features hand cut Italian Oak in a chevron pattern to welcome Guests using the lift at each level before making their way to the Hotel rooms.

Blueridge were asked by the French Design Team and Architects to provide a waxed finish to each of the 30 rooms, working on the gloss level and tint to strict requirements laid down by the French Designer. The final result merging with moulded ceilings and panelled walls with bespoke furniture and light fittings all hand made to detailed designs from the French team.

84

A basement level bar features panelled walls and mirrored ceilings to create a boudoir feel to the space. Blueridge made a pewter topped bar with profiled edges to detailed designs created by the French Design team. A fully bespoke DJ equipment desk was made to designs agreed with the French Hotelier himself who has a penchant of ‘hands on’ design for his Hotels around the World.

Guests using the bar can move to the exterior where a small courtyard was built featuring tiled walls and five bespoke trellis panels made by Blueridge. The design is a classic Versailles detail which is unsurprising given the French Designers association with the Palace. Two panels involved curving the panels to meet the wall curves. Blueridge made laser cut steel frames to glue up the panels for a perfect fit to the wall. A Canadian Yellow Cedar for durability was used with a bespoke paint finish to blend in with the original tiles.

The Hotel has opened to wide acclaim for the interior design. Blueridge were asked to make Vanity desks for the rooms based on an original William Morris design. Back of house high gloss furniture was also made and installed by Blueridge to the French Team’s very detailed designs.

When approached by a Designer looking at an Interior scheme for a well known Film Director in Surrey, Blueridge were key in designing and installing a feature cut away in the two storey ex Granary timber building. A Helical staircase was designed and made to the requirements of the Interior Designer. A spiral stainless steel

handrail was fabricated at the Blueridge Workshops and fitted perfectly around the perimeter of the staircase. Meeting the glazed surround of the stairwell perfectly. Blueridge were asked to remove the ‘modern’ oak detailing for the interior walls and procured old oak beams which were sliced in the workshops and fitted to the walls and plastered in. Creating an original period look. Blueirdge also used scalpings from the beams to create a period door using a local Blacksmith in Shropshire to make the running gear and handles.

Further Old Oak beams were procured and sliced to form a period bandsawn floor leaving the bandsaw marks in for a textured finish. The whole floor being waxed

and fitted with false cut clasp nails to simulate a nailed floor.

Blueridge have a long experience in making unique interiors using their wide knowledge of timber species and unique finishes and designs. A recent addition of a CNC routing table has further added to their portfolio of abilities. Together with a background of metal fabrication and finishing makes Blueridge unique amongst Designers and Makers. Contact us to discuss your needs and ideas, we enjoy the challenges of making ideas and aspirations a reality.

6 WAYS TO SAVE YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN INSTALLATION FROM GOING UNDER

As a premier provider of interior design furniture installations, we understand the intricacies and challenges that come with ensuring a seamless execution of your design vision.

From concept to completion, every step matters in delivering a stunning and functional space that exceeds your client’s expectations. However, even the most meticulously planned installations can encounter hurdles along the way. That’s why we’ve compiled six invaluable tips to help you navigate potential pitfalls and safeguard your interior design installation from going under.

1) THOROUGH PLANNING AND PREPARATION:

The foundation of a successful interior design installation lies in meticulous planning and preparation. Prioritize detailed site assessments, precise measurements,

and comprehensive project timelines. Anticipate potential obstacles and have contingency plans in place to address unexpected challenges swiftly and efficiently.

2) CLEAR COMMUNICATION & TEAMWORK:

Effective communication is key to avoiding misunderstandings and ensuring all interior designers, architects, builds, installations company and other sub-contractors are aligned throughout the installation process. Maintain open lines of communication and the ability to work together and not against each other has a huge

impact on the result of the project, more than you might think. Clear communication fosters trust and transparency, paving the way for a successful outcome.

3) QUALITY MATERIALS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP:

Invest in high-quality materials and craftsmanship to elevate the aesthetics and longevity of your interior design installation. Partner with reputable suppliers and sub-contractors who share your commitment to excellence. Superior materials and craftsmanship not only enhance the overall look and feel of the space but also contribute to its durability and functionality.

Our team of skilled installers is dedicated to delivering flawless results, ensuring every detail is executed with precision and care. From furniture assembly to spatial arrangement, we handle every aspect of the installation process with utmost professionalism and proficiency.

5) ADAPTABILITY AND FLEXIBILITY:

In the dynamic world of interior design, adaptability is essential to overcoming unforeseen challenges and evolving client preferences. Remain flexible and receptive to feedback, allowing for adjustments and refinements as needed. Embrace change as an opportunity for innovation and improvement, ensuring your installation remains relevant and impactful in the everchanging landscape of design.

6) GOOD INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE:

I know this is the last point but this is a game changer when done right. Operating your inventory management system must be as easy to use as Apple phones and look like a social media app. The biggest factor here is the organization benefits and automation that keeps giving you live updates with photos and comments. We use Trello and have custom built it for our clients.

In conclusion, safeguarding your interior design installation from

potential setbacks requires careful planning, clear communication, and a steadfast commitment to quality and professionalism. By adhering to these six essential principles, you can ensure your installation not only meets but exceeds the expectations of your clients, leaving a lasting impression that speaks volumes about your expertise and dedication to excellence.

Workspaces have to be unique, flexible and adaptable.

We are happy to talk to you about any future requirements you have.

INTÉRIEUR LONDON

The brief from our international client was to provide a full turnkey design for when their family home in London.

Our approach was to draw on design influences from the 1930s eluding to the golden age of glamour but with a contemporary twist. For the main living space, we designed a bespoke glass chandelier to span the whole length of the space to help tie the space together as well as defining each area using an ombre effect which changes to complement the colours of each area. In the Formal Living area, we added a new marble fireplace and timber framed glass doors each side to bring light into the central corridor. The Study designed a seductive study

using glossy dark veneer finishes and textured leather inlays to the doors and back illuminated onyx on the joinery.

The design by Interieur London works so well because it skilfully pulls together different design schemes for each that all have a common theme all inspired by classic British inspired design themes. Each space is very different, unique on its own and is beautifully crafted and all work together to create an elegant and seductive London Home.

CDW PREVIEW: BJELIN: STAND: PC9

Visitors to the Bjelin stand at Clerkenwell Design Week will have the opportunity to see at first hand the latest innovations in hardened wood flooring.

As with all products from Bjelin, these include the latest technical developments from industry leading innovators and sister company Välinge Innovation, which developed the world’s first mechanical locking system for wood and laminate flooring.

The company will be showing a new range for the UK market, joining the existing Woodura® hardened wood flooring portfolio, as well as previewing other products for later release in 2024. The new Contrast Collection comprises a palette of five different colourways –Desert, Vapor, Silver, Ivory and Granite. These leverage the existing hues and tones within the wood to create stunning contrasts, while blending with the existing hardened wood 3.0 range. The new range is now available in the XL size, 206mm x 2200mm, in Spačva oak. This type of oak, which is sustainably sourced from Croatia with FSC certification, is renowned for its stunning beauty and distinctive grain.

The company’s ground-breaking Woodura surface technology brings hardened wood floors to life, making them three times stronger than traditional engineered wood options, giving enhanced resistance to water and dents. When it is combined with the leakproof 5G Dry® floor locking system, the Contrast Collection ensures lasting durability and boasts a superior class 33 pro matt lacquer – Bjelin’s toughest to date.

Meanwhile the company will also be showcasing a brand new product offer, rigid core flooring. This type of floor is not only high-performing, it also has a great sustainability positioning, on account of the incorporated Liteback technology.

Bjelin’s extended collections provide the most innovative and aesthetically pleasing flooring solutions for both commercial and residential applications. www.bjelin.com

STACEY POULTNEY

My driving force revolves around the intricate processes involved in working with glass, considering it as my primary material. The stark contrast it offers in comparison to both raw and heavily processed materials captivates me. The continual fragility of glass adds an unforgiving aspect, keeping the creative process consistently absorbing.

I maintain an unwavering commitment to precision in my work. I am inherently competitive with myself, consistently seeking opportunities for improvement. My aim is to delve into the creation of intricate and large-scale glass sculptures. Using my mechanical and engineering skills, I envision fabricating systems that facilitate the transition from static to automated installations.

The current format of my work is deeply rewarding, particularly as I can enhance the scale and complexity of each completed piece. Looking ahead, my goal is to meticulously design and make for contemporary spaces and collections.
