Surface Rug, designed by Staffan Tollg책rd for JAB Anstoetz, 3.3m x 2.8m, Pure Wool
Rugs that scratch beneath the surface...
Some rugs tell powerful stories. The artisans whose hands weave, loop, cut and our natural world; the tarnishing of materials over time; the beauty of the industrial and organic world around us. These are the stories told by the new collection of rugs designed by Staffan Tollg책rd for JAB Anstoetz.

D E C I RV E S Y R E O H IT ST R E R K TE A T W E E S U N O O T BH N I U L R C O E T H T EC S E IC F F O The Clubhouse, a brand new, premium, membershipbased business club, lounge and meeting space in Mayfair, designed by SHH, is taking the co-working office market to a new level by combining the relaxed luxury feel of a boutique hotel with the high-tech desking and ancillary facilities of a state-of-the-art contemporary workspace.
14
The concept arose from the personal experience of The Clubhouse founder, Adam Blaskey, who spent the best part of a decade working as a residential property developer and entrepreneur. Having regularly hosted client meetings in upmarket cafés and hotel lobbies across central London, he identified a gap in the market for a co-working office space that would offer the service and comfort factor of these hospitality environments, but in a much more professional environment. ‘Our client approached SHH having first seen our Manchester Square offices project’ commented SHH Associate and Project Leader Brendan Heath. ‘The design quality of this space – an office designed to a brief to resemble a gentleman’s club, which went on to win the International Interior Design Prize at the International Property Awards in San Diego in 2009 - was a relevant reference point for this new concept. For The Clubhouse, the space needed to be interesting, but also had to attract a wide range of people and so couldn’t risk being too eccentric or over-the-top and had to be planned to incorporate both different types of working needs and differing levels of formality.’

> Mayfair was chosen as the location for The Clubhouse’s flagship venue due to its prime, central location, where Adam Blaskey regularly met his clients, partners and investors. The space is located on the first and second floors of a corner building linking Grafton Street with Bond Street in London’s west end, with views down both Bond Street and Albemarle Street from the property’s south-facing windows. The 1960s building was designed by British architect Richard Seifert, famous for designing Centre Point and Tower 42 (previously the NatWest Tower). The Clubhouse covers 8,000 sq ft: 5000 sq ft on the first floor level and 3000 sq ft on the second. The space is divided into zoned areas to cover all usage needs, from desk work and lounges to private or open meeting spaces with different feels and for different numbers of people, as well as spaces for events or corporate hire and a presentation room for seminars or product launches.
15
A dedicated front of house and concierge team is on hand to welcome all members and their guests. This is backed up by two self-service Nespresso coffee points for members and users, along with mobile phone- and laptop-charging lockers. Contemporary art - rotated on a regular basis - is on display throughout The Clubhouse, in partnership with a leading Notting Hill Gallery and the artworks are also offered for sale. ‘When it came to redesigning the space, SHH inherited a fit-out, as is often the case’, Brendan Heath explained. ‘The quality of what remained was patchy and overly generic, but for the sake of cost-effectiveness and sustainability, we kept those elements we could build on. For the most part, however, we demolished what was there and installed bespoke new joinery, lighting, furniture and finishes to create the sense of warmth and intimacy our client required. All of this was achieved on a particularly tight programme with all construction completed within an 8-week period.’ Design Walk-through: Arrival at The Clubhouse is via stairs or a lift, leading into the reception area, where an existing desk was re-vamped to include a new upstand and side return in black leather, black-stained ash and polished brass. Artek brass pendant lights hand overhead and the brass continues into the branding, which is grey with gold/ brass lettering. The warm feel of brass is one of the main material motifs of the scheme. The front half of the first floor of The Clubhouse is dedicated to more formal/private spaces with four meeting rooms (two on each side) of different sizes and different personalities. ‘The client wanted to ensure that these were not too traditional or typicallymasculine’ added Brendan Heath. > The largest of these is the Board Room, on the left, featuring a large black ash meeting table, complete with cable management for audio-visual purposes and black and chrome leather chairs. A skylight overhead brings plenty of natural light into the room and new American black walnut joinery has been added to existing cabinetry in the same material. The skylight is lined in Dibond brass sheeting to bring some warmth into the room, creating a strong glow in the afternoon sun, whilst four new overhead pendants by Tom Dixon, black on the outside and brass on the inside, keep the brass material choice running through the scheme. The second meeting room opposite the Board Room on the outer wall is a glass and walnut-framed room with a walnut meeting table and a creamy Tektura wallpaper, which looks like stitched leather and adds some tactility to the space. The third meeting room is a similar treatment with Tom Dixon pendants again in a different shape, and the same Nantias leather chairs as the board room, although it’s a much more intimate, small space. Natural light again pours into the room from a skylight above. The fourth meeting room is slightly softer, with a dove grey carpet, grey-stained oak table and grey chairs. A dynamic, slightly metallic wallpaper from Cole & Sons in a silver and gold hexagonal print catches the light. This is the smallest of the four, holding six people, whilst the board room holds twelve and the other two rooms eight people each. It also faces south with large windows and plenty of natural light. The general carpet throughout the communal areas is a graphic Milliken tile which breaks up the uniformity of the space in a contemporary random pattern with lots of movement. Lighting in the open areas is a mix of Delta Light ceiling lights, pendant recess lights and surface-mounted LED strip lights.
16
Beyond the meeting room is the first open zone of the scheme, which has a hotel lobby feel with sofas and armchairs by British manufacturer Morgan and further pendant lights by Tom Dixon. Two large wingback chairs in charcoal (by James UK) with deep buttoning and striking floor lights add to the lounge/clubhouse feel. This section is semi-separated from the second part of the floor by a full- height recess lined in American black walnut with a back face in bronze-tinted mirroring, cantilevered shelves and table lamps, creating different sources of light and reflections. The recess forms a T- shape with a wall with four individual workstations on either side, backed by two striking feature wallpapers that fit with the differing colour schemes. The second part of the first floor is a large, flexible and informal space, which can also be used for events and private hire with loose furniture (eight small Andreu World tables, with chairs by Alias, along with four blue James UK wingback chairs with high backs for privacy and small tables, also by James UK), which can be cleared when the space is booked beyond normal trading hours (7.30am to 7pm) for special events. Opposite, the back wall of the scheme is a double-height void (as it forms part of the building’s extension, which only reaches the second floor of the building). All new joinery cladding unifies the two spaces with richness and detail, spray-painted in dark grey

with simple and stylised mouldings that play off the light and shade. Feature furniture here is made up of built-in banquettes using orange buttoned leather to provide a striking hospitality feel, combined with Sancal chairs and bespoke tables in black-stained ash. This area can also work as a service bar position when the space is used for events. New wall lights here include mirrored bulbs from CTO, along with a series of pendants from Decode with brass wire shades. Beyond the banquettes is a centralised self-service space for coffee and cold drinks with lockers for mobile phone and laptop re-charging (activated by individual RFID membership cards). The area is in American black walnut with Dibond lining to maintain the material continuity. The final space on this floor is ‘The Gallery’: a presentation room which can be used for training courses and seminars and holds up to 30 people. A glass staircase to the side of the leather banquettes leads up to the second floor area, which houses banks of hot desks. The same carpet as downstairs continues the design language. The space is divided into four internal zones with chairs and tables by Alias. Desks are by a Turkish company called Koleksiyon and resemble domestic desking rather than typical office system desking. Chairs (polyrop simple chairs by Danish company Hay) add to the feel of a serious environment, though with a light touch and more casual feel. Feature areas include a second coffee point and a mirror-lined recess, both of which are the same as on the floor below and ‘The Clublounge’ – a dark, plush and intimate space with velvet, buttoned wingback chairs, black carpets, dark charcoal grey walls and ceiling and striking feature wallpaper. This is very much a retreat space for time out, relaxing and conversations. Built-in joinery for bookshelves, with an inset HD screen, makes for a more intimate space. Also included on this floor are a phone booth area for private calls; toilets, private offices for The Clubhouse management team and a single meeting room which echoes meeting room four downstairs in a dove grey colourway, although with a different Cole & Son paper in grey and white, a white meeting table and a great 800mm diameter pendant from Danish company Muuto with grey felt on the outside and white on the inside. ‘This has been a great and boundary-breaking project to work on’ concluded Brendan Heath. ‘It represents a shift and new direction in this market which very much reflects modern-day working patterns. It was challenging in some respects to design for a potentially very broad range of end users, but by creating a loose-fit environment with an accent on flexibility, future evolutions of The Clubhouse offer are very much possible within the existing space.’ Adam Blaskey, Founder and CEO of The Clubhouse, added: ‘We very much enjoyed working with SHH on the design of The Clubhouse, from initial concept through to completion of the refurbishment works. Brendan Heath’s fantastic attention to detail and help in the selection of finishes, furniture and lighting has been instrumental in The Clubhouse being able to offer a premium offering, which was key from the outset.’

The Awards recognise examples of progressive design and the use of innovative surfaces in projects both in the UK and internationally. Categories cover projects in Retail, Commercial, Housing, Public Building, Light and Surfaces and Temporary Structures. Launched in 2013, the Awards have grown quickly both in stature and the number of entrants. Italian brand Ham Holy Burger has made its UK debut by opening their first venue at John Lewis’s store on Oxford Street in London. With restaurants in Milan and Rome, Ham Holy Burger uses fresh ingredients in order to create an Italian heritage gourmet burger menu. This menu offers a wide selection of fresh food to John Lewis customers, making their visit to the store more pleasant and enduring. This new venue brings a complete touch of Italy to the shopping centre with its food, customer service, and Mediterranean environment. The partnership between John Lewis and Ham Holy Burger was a fantastic opportunity to use a number of unique elements to create an up-todate structural design with the space used in the store. The furniture provided by supplier UHS Group has contributed to this. One of their popular products featured in this project is the Tagg side chair. These chairs have a steel framework with a wooden seat, back, and legs. The steel frame has been powdercoated in dark brown, along with the seat and legs. Another piece of furniture which can be seen in this restaurant is the Marlo bases. These bases have been created using a cruciform design, helping to allow easy chair access. With adjustable feet, they have also been measured to dining height.

Functionality or aesthetics? This is often the dilemma for designers, contractors and facility managers alike, and often the result is at best a compromise of the two. This applies in particular to Visual display presentation equipment, and architects are often disappointed to see an ugly, old fashioned whiteboard ruining the clean lines of their modern office creation! But now there is a solution to this dilemma! Glass writing boards have become the new ‘must have’ product in design conscious offices and homes. The trend originated in Scandinavia, but has arrived in Britain and the trend is growing rapidly. These boards are magnetic, and also provide a perfect writing surface, and Casca, the leading UK manufacturer of these elegant boards also offer a bespoke size and colour surface. David Shaw, Casca Marketing Director and founder of the Company, said: “we think it’s wonderful that such an attractive, design led product can be manufactured wholly in Great Britain and is being so well received both here and in the US. Our growth has been spectacular and we look forward to more business development throughout 2014.” Glass, of course, offers many advantages over the alternatives. It is ideal as a writing medium, giving clean and clear marking. It is also hygienic, easy to clean and extremely difficult to scratch. So functionality is perfect. But then of course, there is the aesthetics! Simply beautiful minimal lines, in stunning colours, transforms a writing board into a piece of furniture, or even art.
not to fade, and is fully fire resistant.” One of the most exciting product developments is the ability to digitally print to the back of the glass, allowing the potential to have corporate logos, images or photographs as a feature of the board. This really allows for true ‘individualisation’, and is proving extremely popular to corporate establishments and interior designers alike. Also, Casca now produce their ‘Creative Wall’ which allows whole walls to transform into a coloured magnetic glass writing surface.
37
Other products include Mobiglass – Casca glass writing boards which are easily moveable allowing for flexibility of use, and can double up as office screens or partitions – a fantastic product for the modern office. “We are continually developing new product ideas” explained David, “these are often driven by our clients. And as our manufacturing base is in the UK we feel no restriction in our ability to produce exactly what our client requires.” Functionality or aesthetics? You can now have both! www.boardsdirect.co.uk Telephone: 0845 5194995
“Casca boards offer a new dimension to office design, and enable designers to build in the writing board to their office concept rather than suffer ugly products ruining their vision.” David explained. “It is also vital that the technical qualities are of sufficiently high enough grade to ensure the decorative element - the colour in particular- is not affected by light or heat. Casca uses Lacobel SAFE glass, safety backed and complying with BSI 6206, EN12600 and ANSI z 97.1 The product is guaranteed

in 1926, and the project was born. At this early stage, it was fundamental in the thinking of all parties concerned that public art should be an integral part of the building and this became a key principle of the ReardonSmith scheme which won the competition. Following further discussions, Antony Gormley was commissioned to create an inhabitable sculpture which will be open to the public on certain designated days each year.
The Beaumont hotel designed by ReardonSmith Architects has now opened. For this first hotel from esteemed restaurateurs Jeremy King and Chris Corbin, the architects have transformed an Art Deco era garage in London’s Mayfair into an intimate destination redolent with the style of a fine and very comfortable 1920s establishment. ReardonSmith’s collaboration with Jeremy King and Chris Corbin extends back over a number of years, initially, assisting the partners in their search for a suitable London property. Then in 2008, Grosvenor approached Corbin & King to participate in a limited competition for the development into a hotel of the then Avis Rent-A-Car garage, originally built
>
39
From the beginning, ReardonSmith worked closely with City of Westminster planners, English Heritage and local residents groups. The existing building needed to be extended to create a commercially viable hotel and the architects developed several options for review. The final scheme involved a sensitive extension to the existing north wing of the building, as well as two additional floors on the roof and two new basement levels. These interventions have achieved space for a total of 73 guestrooms and suites, the Colony Grill Room and American bar, a separate residents’ lounge, a small private dining room and a spa with hammam, hot stone platform, cold plunge pool and a gym. Key to the chosen scheme is that the roof extension is clearly a modern intervention which does not attempt to copy the existing façade yet is sympathetic to it. Internally, works have included the entire removal of the structure behind the retained façade, which was suspended and restrained by temporary steelwork towers during demolition and reconstruction. All the fenestration is new with crittall-style windows customdesigned to match to look of the original windows while significantly improving their security, thermal and acoustic qualities. Four magnificent Art Deco style lamps on the front elevation are faithful replicas of the original lamps and the defining black iron balustrading to level four of the building – previously the top floor – has been restored. The façade was repaired and re-painted.

The ground floor plan is on a simple axis. On arrival, guests are able to see immediately the flow of spaces before them, from entrance hall to bar and through to the restaurant and, to one side, the concierge and reception, with the staircase behind sweeping down to the spa and private dining room below. The private residents’ lounge is at the other end of the lobby.

Guestrooms are discreetly glamorous and enriched by Art Deco features. Attention to detail was an absolute rule – from the design of the ceiling cornice in the bedrooms to the tone of the glass bathroom tiles and the traditional bronze light switches. In most of the rooms, a sliding timber-veneered door can be drawn across the bedroom area to provide complete privacy from the bathroom and the entrance lobby, where the wardrobes are located, thus converting this zone into a dressing room. The one- bedroom Presidential Suite on the new fifth floor has been designed to open up to adjoining rooms and even extend across the entire floor to become a magnificent five-bedroom suite. From its large terrace looking towards the historic patchwork of Mayfair’s roofs and gardens, guests experience a very special connection with the city past and present.

ReardonSmith worked closely with Antony Gormley, his design team and his specialist engineer to realise the sculpture. Named ROOM, the monumental form “crouches” against the façade of the building and rises 10 metres from its second floor rooftop podium. Both work of art and an architectural extension to the hotel, inside ROOM is an extraordinary bedroom forming part of a suite. The welded metal sculpture weighs 34 tonnes and consideration had to be given to determining the best load- bearing structure which would allow for marginal movement over time. The architectural team also travelled to Germany’s Black Forest with Antony Gormley to select each oak plank for the internal cladding and was closely involved in the interior design detailing to help realise the artist’s ambition. In the course of the project, two mock-ups, one full-scale, were built to test the spatial arrangement and check for any possible light or noise encroachment into the sculpture.

“It has been an absolute joy to work with Corbin & King, our client Grosvenor who was the developer and Antony Gormley in what has been a very creative process for both the designers and the architects,” says Patrick Reardon, Executive Chairman of ReardonSmith Architects. “We all shared a single vision and brought our individual skills and experience to the task of realising this vision. I think the result is a unique and timeless hotel as well as a truly exciting new landmark in Mayfair.”

THE ART OF ACOUSTICS The new major extension to the Manchester School of Art has generated much interest and was a finalist at this year’s Stirling Prize awarded annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects for the best building. Designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, it aims to provide a lively environment and help reassert the Art School and the University on the national stage. It is also an interesting showcase for demonstrating how noise pollution in large crowded spaces can be overcome by installing Troldtekt acoustic panels. The architects’ concept is a modern interpretation of the traditional Manchester textile trade warehouse, comprising a highly visible seven storey Vertical Gallery space together with an interactive ‘hybrid’ studio behind. It is described as being more like an art gallery than a university department. The potential noise pollution from the large open spaces has been solved by installing white painted 1200 x 600mm Troldtekt acoustic panels on the ceilings. The panels are made from 100% natural wood fibres. Their benefits include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. Troldtekt panels are widely specified throughout Europe to improve acoustics in many different projects, such as schools, swimming pools, commercial and public buildings. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, they can be left unpainted or painted in virtually any RAL colour. Their sustainability was recently recognised with certification at Silver level within the Cradle to Cradle concept. He pursued graduate design studies in Italy. Rashid created more than 2000 designs and models, including projects for interiors, fashion, furniture, lighting, light and music to installations. In 1993 he opened his design practice in New York City, where he continues to live. In Italy he also designed the interiors for the University Line 1 Metro Station,
unique model in our country of union between art and urban mobility. His work is in the permanent collections of fourteen museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Rashid was an associate Professor of Industrial Design for10 years and is now a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences globally. About our company he says: “I feel very lucky to work with a company that wants to push itself beyond the boundaries”.
KOOK design Karim Rashid “I take a minimalist approach in my kitchens, preferring to create a clean striking surface that is punctuated by splashes of strong color. For the Kook kitchen I wanted to create an innovative design to turn even the most challenging culinary endeavors into pure aesthetic pleasure”. The cabinets open to give expansive views of all that is to offer and then shut when the meal is done making a minimal and uncluttered kitchen. Rolling shutters reveal LED edged shelves and built-in hood above the hob. Utilizing the angled cabinet, larger items can be stored at the top while smaller, more readily used items on the bottom making cooking a breeze. The pressure opened bottom cabinets are accented with colored LED strips and angled to allow an easy approach to the work surface. Kook also features a sink that can be hidden using a matching cutting board to make a continuous surface. The use of solid Corian on frameless doors gives life to a combination of technicality, solidity and aesthetic minimalism.

Feature Bathroom lighting is becoming more desirable, but until now the choices of switching have been severely limited. (Pull-cords, PIRs or outside switching). Sensorbility, has therefore developed the NEW Bathroom Switch controller, with Dimmer andTimer variants; thus allowing bathroom designers far more flexibility when it comes to lighting design and operation within bathrooms. The variations of the new controller include simple on/off switching, ramp-up dimming, ramp-down switch-off and time delay switch-off. Wired to our proven Bathroom Switch Sensor Pads, which can be placed behind most materials such as Ceramic Tiles, Wood, Plastic, Glass, and even Metals, users can create switches or dimmers in virtually any shape and situation.Tiles covering Sensor Pads are adhered with silicone allowing access should it be necessary. In Bathrooms, these Sensor Pads can even be placed behind tiles reachable from the bath or shower (zones 1&2) and thus allow safe switching and dimming. The new Bathroom Switch controllers can be activated from up to 12 low voltage (5vdc) Sensor Pads, so for example a Dimmer Controller can be operated from a Sensor Pad by the door and then the lights dimmed by touching a tile whilst in the bath. Most types of lighting can be operated by the Bathroom Switch; this includes incandescent bulbs, halogens (mains and low voltage), LEDs and low energy bulbs. Sensorbility Ltd. THE INTERIORS GROUP FIT OUT BASE SOCCER
The Interiors Group have recently designed and completed a Cat A to Cat B fit-out of the newly relocated offices for Base Soccer in London.
48
Base Soccer are an agency for professional footballers, dedicated to the ongoing development and career management of their clients in football and beyond. Established in 1997, Base Soccer has continued to grow in stature as their client base expands annually. Their head office is in London’s West End and is supported by consultant offices throughout Europe, South America and the United States. Following a relocation, Base Soccer briefed The Interiors Group to create a modern office space, reflective of the brand identity. Two separate wings were required on one floor, one to be the client facing side with added ‘wow’ factor, and the other a ‘behind the scenes’ working environment. Virginia Dunne, Operations Director of Base Soccer Agency Ltd commented: “We were drawn to The Interiors Group right from the start, when they came up with a stunning design idea which stood out amongst the other contestants in the beauty parade that kicked off our hunt for a fit-out company. When our
original property choice fell through, TIG visited alternative premises with us, patiently taking us through several incarnations of the design. When it came time to formerly appoint them, our hard bargaining was met with good humour and understanding. The fit-out was smoothly overseen by professional contract managers and carried out by an excellent workforce. We would have no hesitation in recommending TIG.” The main concept behind the design of the interior was to reflect the heritage of football in a modern way. The football motif was incorporated in a subtle way, for example hexagon textured gold wallpaper was introduced onto the walls in the boardroom. This subtly picked up the shapes found on a football. The new breakout furniture has upholstery of worn brown leathers with grey tones of fabric to soften. Detailed red stitching in the grey chairs and sofa was used to push the original idea of the interior forward. Worn leathers and detailed stitching were utilised as they are reflective the typical design of a football boot. waiting area on a white wall. Shades of red and various gradients of light and dark veneer look vinyl were mixed together to create a striking, textured wood effect floor. A worn leather bench and grey fabric sofa face a large, wall mounted television screen. This area is made complete with a fully stocked drinks fridge/coffee machine. A small office for the two directors and the boardroom are to the side, separated by glass partitions. These glass partitions comply with building control with the installation of privalight which enables the client to turn on and off manifestation for internal meeting privacy. The open plan office space in the second wing maintained the colour scheme with white walls, and was fitted with dark grey carpets. White workstations are contrasted with red screens which tie in with the splashes of red used in the front of house area. A small meeting room to the side is again separated from the central desks with a glass partition. The Interiors Group have over 25 years of experience delivering stunning commercial environments. "Exposure to persistent, unwanted sound is detrimental to health, learning, productivity and quality of life" John Connell oBe Founder oF the nAS – oCtoBer 1959
Next to air pollution, noise is the biggest disruption to our lives. The louder the noise, the more effort it takes to overcome and this disruption needs to be controlled. The Noise Abatement Society has taken a stand and Quiet Mark accreditation assures the end user of a product that it has been designed and built to exacting standards. When Manchester University needed a high acoustic solution to protect their very precise measuring equipment from external noise pollution they called Enfield Speciality Doors and when we called to ask for post installation feedback we were very pleased to hear superlatives that included "Brilliant", "Perfect" and "Excellent". From the Isle of Skye to the Isle of Wight, our clients include the major
players in the construction industry and we are specified by leading Architects so if you're looking for PAS24 security, X-Ray protection, Acoustic reduction, Fire safety or a combination of these qualities, then give us a call to discuss a bespoke solution for your specific needs. We only make doors to order so your timber acoustic doors can be selected from a wide range of veneers and finishes to achieve the required sound reduction while perfectly matching any non acoustic doors in the same installation and a huge range of laminates are also available. Every door that we’ve made over the past 30 years has been produced to exacting standards and the highest quality at our factory in North London where the only thing we don’t make is the glass.
49
There is just one other thing that we outsource and that's testing by an independent facility based here in the UK. Acoustic doors are tested across the full spectrum of frequencies, fire doors are burnt to a cinder and security doors get attacked by a nasty guy who has a limited time to get through with anything he wants to throw at them and he can even stop the clock if he's forgotten a particularly favourite crow bar! Apart from the scientific testing, our accreditations also include ISO14001, ISO9001, FSC and TRADA certifications for your peace of mind. Contact Enfield Speciality Doors on 0208 805 6662 or www.enfielddoors.co.uk or sales@enfielddoors.co.uk or find us in the acoustic doors section on the Quiet Mark website at http://www.quietmark.com/category/product-types/

Since 1870, Schonbek® has been synonymous with authentic handcrafted crystal chandeliers of the highest heirloom quality. Each creation is a radiant masterpiece of elegance and opulence, designed to illuminate generations to come. In 1870, young Adolph Schonbek left his grandfather’s glassworks to found A. Schonbek & Co. The young entrepreneur focused on manufacturing crystal chandeliers of the finest quality and quickly built up a successful international business. He was eventually awarded the company’s iconic crest by Franz Joseph I of the Habsburg Court, also most notably known as the former Emperor of Austria. Passing on this entrepreneurial spirit to the next generations, the family’s resilience and passion continued to shine through in its chandelier making, with ingenuity as a driving force. For more than 140 years, the Schonbek name has carried with it a reputation as a change maker in lighting, revolutionizing the industry. To date, Schonbek is responsible for more than 200 patents. True to the company’s heritage of handcraftsmanship, each premium Schonbek chandelier is delicately hand worked in the service of beauty. WHAT LIES BENEATH Scratch the surface of designer Staffan Tollg책rd collection of rugs for JAB Anstoetz and there is more than one story to tell.
THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 12
>
The collaboration between the London-based, Swedish-born interior designer and JAB has resulted in a compelling range of rugs, conceived in London, technically imagined in Bielefeld, Germany and hand-crafted by skilled weavers in Thailand. Eight designs employ the technical expertise of the rug-makers to reveal the elemental transformation of the natural world and the notion of the truth of surfaces – questions that Staffan has explored in his interior design practice over the last decade. The Red Thread is his short hand for this journey - for the creative DNA that identifies and connects each project and that tells his client’s story using the language of design. Successfully introduced to the UK during London Design Week, the collection is launched internationally in 2015 at IMM Cologne and Maison et Object in Paris.
A passion for storytelling Invited by JAB to design a range of rugs as part of their successful Character series, Staffan explains that for him, the creative journey towards this collection began with a question.
53
“We asked ourselves what our red thread was. What did we as designers find truly interesting and worth exploring in this unique opportunity? We found the answer in the fundamental matter of each of our projects: story-telling and the truth of materials. A rug is an artwork in two dimensions. Yet beneath this flat finished sculpture is the story of the maker, the natural elements and the originating design process.” [During the design process Staffan & Monique Tollgard visited JAB Anstoetz in Bielenfeld to review the samples and choose the final designs]

Scratched is a textural revelation: a myriad of marks, imprints and scratches on a surface that have combined over time to create a new work. In this rug the layers that are scratched away give way to another, almost more valuable material: the loop pile and carved sections of rug.
three-dimensional moment in time just before the earth entirely gives way to the volcanic silk beneath.
delicately carved edges of the silk mimic the surface tension of a liquid caught at the point of motion.
In Drop the flat wool sea is disturbed with concentric carved ripples: out of the disturbance of perfection comes something even more beautiful.
The relief of the knurled metal at the heart of Diamond is experienced throughout every city in the world as a working pattern, the product of a machine for the machine that is the city. Yet when this machine-cut pattern is painstakingly cut into wool, it reveals the essence of the craft of rug making and rug sculpting. The hand of the artisan transforms an unassuming natural fibre and raises it to the level of art.
Dissolve traces the alchemical effect of water as metal bleeds one colour into another, a story of time and transformation.
Staffan reveals that “the final rug, the Red Thread, was JAB’s idea. When we described how each rug told the story of material change, of the reality of what lies beneath, of our desire to explore texture and truth in each rug as we do in each of our projects, Michael Constable, the originator of the project with JAB UK, asked if we could design a rug that captured this notion. The Red Thread is the simplest rug of them all. A silk cut pile that runs through a neutral wool ground: an invitation to each of our clients to find the rhythm of their own stories and to map them out visually. We ask for the point of departure and the end, and a clue as to whether their story has been straight to the point or a meandering tale that has made the most of the canvas afforded to it”.
JAB’s advanced techniques in combining wool with silk, in carving and in subtly playing with colours enables Beneath to evoke a dramatic, > WWW.THEARTOFDESIGNMAGAZINE.COM
Surface explores the cracking of the earth and the transformative nature of materials when exposed to external elements. The slightly apocalyptic notion of the design is softened by the warm, muted colours and the delicate loop pile that is exposed in the fissures of the rug. Customised designs, logos and images can be incorporated and even ‘movable’ images can be transmitted. Egger James Latham will be showing a number of new additions to its already extensive range of Egger decors. Cornish Chair Company serving up a treat with lobster pot creation
'Britannicus Stone sources a large range of carboniferous limestones from across the United Kingdom. Out of existing quarries Britannicus extracts the block before it is crushed and used for aggregate. For once it is crushed, the fossils and structures of these 350 million year old stones are lost for ever. Britannicus aims to cut, polish and supply finished slabs to architects and designers so that the stones are allowed the chance to reveal their extraordinary geological history and beauty in houses old and new. The colours of Stoneycombe, soft pink, light red with hints of grey and swirls of rich cream, hark back to a bygone era. A clawed ocean crustacean most commonly associated with the dinner plate might sound like an unlikely source of inspiration for a unique new piece of furniture design. The vision of a lobster - in its humble seaside pot – has been the vital ingredient behind the creation of The Lobster Pot Chair. The idea comes from the Creative Director of the Cornish Chair Company, Richard Hooper, who has previously exhibited collaborative projects at the London Design Week and worked on a variety of commissions for the National Trust. The Truro based company’s 25-legged chair, made from kiln dried American black walnut, represents an innovative approach to furniture design and aims not to merely occupy a position and cubic capacity within a space, but also to interact with and make a wider impact upon that space. New upholstered seating collection offers contemporary edge Lyndon Design’s recent collaboration with leading British designer, Peter Emrys-Roberts of ERA, has resulted in an upholstered seating collection named Romba. Featuring a modern rectilinear design, this collection is accentuated by colourful upholstered blocks and provides a contemporary and striking seating solution. Exploiting a vocabulary of simple forms and materials, Romba provides the specifier with tremendous scope and choice. Featuring armchair and sofa options, the collection may be arranged into a variety of asymmetrical and symmetrical compositions to suit each particular scheme. To overcome the restrictions that designers face when looking to inject colour into a scheme, as loose cushions are not always an appropriate option, Romba facilitates the controlled addition of colour or accent fabrics to the ends of its bolsters, conveniently the same shape as cushions. For added versatility, Romba is available in a wide range and combination of fabrics and colours. Osmo UK’s Polyx®-Oil Effect Gold wood finish is resistant to water and dirt, and very durable, whilst also providing a touch of individual creativity, thanks to the tint effect. The range is available in three colours. Silver (3091) and Gold (3092) are designed for dark wood species such as smoked Oak, to stain the grain to achieve modern colour effects. Polyx®-Oil Effect Raw (3044) prevents the permanent ‘wet look’ that appears with original clear Polyx®-oil. A minimal amount of white pigment is used to retain the natural light colour tone of the raw wood. Compared to conventional finishes, the natural vegetable oils and waxes allow for an even colouring and a harmonic, smooth surface result. It is also microporous and therefore does not crack, flake, peel or blister. www.osmouk.com 01296 481 220.

Impress, which features five new wood designs with 22 colour options each with registered embossing, is the epitome of realistic design; having taken inspiration from the great outdoors. David Bigland, managing director of Moduleo UK and Eire comments: “We have been overwhelmed by the huge success of our Impress collection; and it just highlights the demand for more natural looking products. “Each of the designs in the range are truly authentic and provide an uncanny resemblance to real wood but with a number of added benefits including increased durability and excellent heat insulation.” All Moduleo products contain up to 50 per cent recyclable material of verified origin and are themselves recycled. Realising Exceptional Creations Signed In Colours 75
Immune to all conformity, ROUGE ABSOLU launches its first collection of furniture, fabrics and wallpapers. Under the artistic direction of Geraldine Prieur, Interior and Furniture Designer as well as outstanding colourist, ROUGE ABSOLU fluently marries lines, volumes, materials and colours thereby portraying decoration in a fresh light. ROUGE ABSOLU is resolutely anti-conformist. Those won over by her “Unconventional Full Colours” style call upon Geraldine Prieur’s talent to define sophisticated and rare spaces. Born of a contemporary reinterpretation of the Decorative Arts, the furniture imagined by Geraldine Prieur presents original volumes and flamboyant colours.
By combining the nobility of leather with the strength of wood and the splendour of lacquer, she creates a perfect union of luxury and artistry. Energised, gallant and feminine, each piece presents a rare design thereby breathing new life into the world of decoration. In a constant search for the original and the unexpected, the ROUGE ABSOLU collection is completed by the Sonho collection of fabrics and wallpapers. The latter takes you on a trip to the beating heart of Brazil, a symbol of where the Cariona beaches, architects’ utopias, the villages of myriad colours, the whirling carnivals and luxuriance of the primitive forest all meet.

Henderson and Redfearn unveils the new handmade Driftwood Kitchen range With a plethora of sleek new kitchen designs coming on to the market, handmade kitchen specialists Henderson and Redfearn have gone above and beyond to create a unique new range unlike anything else on the contemporary kitchen design market. A labour of love in both design and manufacture, the newly launched Henderson and Redfearn Driftwood Kitchen has echoes of style elements ranging from a traditional beachfront house to a contemporary city loft.
78
The Driftwood Kitchen is crafted from solid oak, which is pressure washed, scorched and finished with white lime to achieve the worn and distressed texture, before being given a tough matt top coat; a process that was many months in design and development. As with all Henderson and Redfearn kitchens, every bespoke component is created and finished by hand by the team of skilled craftsmen at the company’s Essex workshops. “We worked with a variety of designs and finishes to create up with the Driftwood Kitchen,” says the company’s founder Simon Redfearn. “It’s a very complex process to get the depth of character to the oak to create the driftwood look; but the end result is worth it, with really beautiful results that create a unique and timeless style.” Every Henderson and Redfearn kitchen is designed and handmade to customer requirements. “In many ways, we work in reverse from offthe-shelf kitchens,” explains Simon. “We start with the space and the customer’s unique requirements and create the kitchen to fit every nuance and detail. With a bespoke handmade kitchen, there are no limits to design, space, luxury or usability.” Contact Henderson and Redfearn on 01255 861943 or visit www.hendersonandredfearn.co.uk
