In our business we are fortunate enough to work with some wonderful ‘raw material’: beautiful architecture and spaces that we are asked to enhance and re-energise. One such project was a gorgeous Grade II listed Georgian vicarage of key significance and historical value in this area of Cheshire. The client wanted us to extend the property and provide a complete turnkey service.

4

Working closely with the client’s architect we contributed to a significant early success: gaining planning permission, in a conservation area, to increase the property’s footprint by a remarkable 150%. Our team were responsible for structural alterations and technical installations as well as specifying decorative finishes and detailing, with many bespoke elements. The objective then: to evolve this classic Georgian ‘box’ house, restoring it to its former glory whilst creating a fresh lifestyle proposition. UBER hand-picked contractors whom we know and trust, and can work to the exacting standards and level of detail that we require. For this was a project where no stone would be left unturned to achieve an outcome we knew was possible.

> THE DINING ROOM Accessed from the elegant entrance hall with light colours, there now comes a change of pace: a solid dark wood herringbone pattern floor, contrasting with the softest of cream silk rugs. The room takes in a wealth of natural light from two aspects via the large restored windows and is accessed from symmetrical doors either end of the room. The centrepiece is breathtaking, a highly lacquered dining table which is completed with two-tone upholstered chairs in cream leather with striking backs in blue material complementing the artwork and embellished with mother of pearl handles. This imposing arrangement is set off with a rock crystal chandelier and matching wall lights which reflect beautifully in the shot silk wallpaper.

5

To the feature arch on one wall we added a ‘cold applied metal’ which gives a bronzed effect to a wall, giving a real juxtaposition of classical and contemporary style. This included a bespoke shagreen sideboard, completed with horse sculpture and flanking table lamps. The centre fireplace was then replaced in a Portland stone and modern classical grate with a Christopher Guy mirror above to finish the room.

> THE UNDERGROUND GARAGE and LEISURE SUITE The owner’s prized Ferrari collection meant that storage and security were of paramount importance. An underground showroom-style garage behind a double layer of gates and accessed via a car lift complete with black stretch ceiling and architect task lighting creates a befitting surrounding to showcase the cars. The underground space was to be divided to accommodate a gym, pool and spa area which opens to a private and secluded sunken terrace. Arriving at the bottom of the stairs you are immediately greeted by a console collection of vibrant autumnal colours collated from a console table with tree-like legs, two glass table lamps a Robert Welsh polished chrome candelabra which reflect all the complementing colours cascading from the original large artwork hanging above. To your left your eye catches a myriad of glass bead drops, full height and varying sizes toying playfully in front of a full length mirror - though it’s through the door to the right which signals playtime. 8

At this level immediately to your left you access a compact but well equipped gym with a fully glazed wall drawing your eye to the sites and levels below. Immediately right is the well appointed changing and refreshment areas and down from the gym mezzanine is a luxuriant basalt tiled pool with water spouts and backlit columns with size-enhancing mirrored walls which reflect the main features. To the far end is a cascading wall of water lit from above to highlight the etched pattern on the stone tiles. However, veying for attention all the while are the bespoke oversized glass drop chandelier directly plinth mounted above the circular Jacuzzi with contrasting antique-gold tiles. And beyond in the soft Morrocan-style semi-circular seating area is a large, high gloss, double circle table with large soft grey ornate plant feature. To the rear of the room a range of classic French doors leads out to the secluded sunken terrace with honey stone built fireplace and minimal planting to complement the clean lines. The steam room and sauna sit together in a circular fashion to complement the circular spa. There are no sharp angles or corners here, which adds to the overwhelming sense of wellness and relaxation.

SMART BY DESIGN You can be forgiven for feeling a little like James Bond when you can heat your hot tub or set your fireplace ablaze with the touch of a button, but ‘Smart Home’ technology is fast becoming an integral part of the 21st home. In fact, by 2018, there will be 50 million “smart homes and buildings” according to global technology research firm ON World. Not only are home devices such as lighting, music, TV and temperature control greatly improved, everything can be controlled from your smart phone or tablet. So what are the features we can expect from a “Smart Home”? Firstly, on a practical level,

>

21st Century Home Technology

smart technology means watertight security for your home. As you leave for work, one push of a button can lock doors, arm the security system, turn off lights, power down devices and adjust the temperature to “away” mode. Your home and your peace of mind are secured with one touch. And upon your return, locks are opened with individual codes instead of fumbling for keys. Separate codes issued to children, staff or others mean you can receive a message to tell you who is home – so, for example, you can tell if children are back safe from school while you are still working.

For long stints away, set up a ‘mockupancy program’ – interior lights turn on in patterns, fooling any would-be intruders into thinking your house is occupied. And if you’re particularly concerned about specific areas such as a medicine cabinet, a safe or gun storage – vibration sensors inform you when the area has been accessed. 13

>

14

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 08 Other sensors monitor temperature and moisture levels, alerting you by email or text if a boiler fails or if there’s leaking water that could damage your home. But it’s the improvements in your home comfort where smart technologies really get a chance to shine. Music, TV and lighting become one streamlined fabulous feature under the control of Smart Home technology – access your entire iTunes library from any room – pop for the kids bedrooms, radio news in the study and a relaxing soundtrack in the kitchen. Stream Pandora, Spotify, Rhapsody, Napster, TuneIn and others to access on-demand music from just about anywhere. Injecting Smart Home technology into your video systems first of all simplifies everything – one universal remote truly will manage all. Different movies can show in different rooms, and when you’re settling in for the cinema experience, one touch closes the blinds, dims the lights and sets the perfect temperature. Smart Home climate control means that half an hour before you wake, your home will slowly heat up, the lights gradually brighten and the shades open, easing you into your day. Intelligent climate control – with different modes for

night, weekend and holidays – also means you never burn energy that’s not needed. Bespoke property developers Searchfield Homes, who specialise in luxury builds in the outskirts of London, have harnessed smart technology into their homes with great success. “We have used Control 4 technology in our builds for the last five years”, says Andrew Searchfield, Owner of Searchfield Homes. “People are used to their world being controlled by their mobile phone, and this goes for their homes too, so it’s a hugely popular feature.” “We find that all generations of a family now use smartphones, and with the whole focus on being ‘user-friendly’, smart home technology has been adapted very readily,” he says. “Lighting, music and movie control are the most popular features, but being able to check and control your home security from anywhere, even overseas, is also of course a huge benefit for people who travel internationally.” “It is definitely becoming the norm now,” he continues. “All of our homes are fitted with smart technology capability, and it’s considered a ‘future-proofing’ step for the property’s value.”

Touch technology

TRANSFORMS DESIGN

> One of the primary trends in design is convergence: the tendency for products to take their design cues from other devices or activities that are not only familiar but are also convenient and desirable. So, when MK set about designing the Elements Collection of electrical devices it did so by first researching the way in which we use or interact with other popular electronic and electric household devices. The clear leader in terms of influence is the touch screen, appearing first upon smartphones and then spreading to tablets and upmarket laptops. Consumers now see similar technology in a host of domestic electrical appliances.

16

The hospitality industry – so often showing the way for trends in domestic interior fashions – has also been quick to incorporate touchscreens and tablets for guestrooms and public spaces. During the three years of research and development that went into producing the Elements Collection, MK concentrated on providing users with the same type of interface they would find on their phone in or the tablet. MK chose capacitive touch because it is both highly sensitive and durable, and so more suitable for devices that are in daily use. As a result many of the dimmers and switches in the range are operated simply by ‘swiping’ across the touch screen. This sophistication does not compromise the reliability or integrity of the devices, rather it just changes the way the device is being used. Even greater choice is provided by MK’s bespoke design service, which produces devices to order in colours from the Pantone and RAL ranges as well as in alternative materials and finishes. In this approach, technology and design complement one another to produce a range that not only embodies smart technology but also looks smart and chic too.

Clerkenwell Design Week

>

Announces Festival Programme Newly appointed Show Director William Knight presented Clerkenwell Design Week’s 2014 programme at the Crypt on the Green at St James’ Church this morning. Celebrating its fifth edition this year, Clerkenwell Design Week (20-22 May 2014) will showcase the latest innovations by designers and manufacturers from the UK and around the world. Set against the historic backdrop of Clerkenwell, the threeday festival will be centred upon leading design showrooms in the neighbourhood, as well as four focused exhibitions; The Design Factory, Platform, Detail and Additions. Showrooms including bulthaup (above left) and Camira (above right), and exhibitors including Another Country, Case Furniture (above centre), Kit Miles and Ginger & Jagger, are amongst those that will present their new collections at the event.

20

CDW Presents showcases new commissioned projects and street installations for the festival, featured prominently around Clerkenwell. The festival will once again work with established and emerging names from both design and architecture, offering an array of curated features and installations stationed across Clerkenwell. As part of the Fringe, local creative practices - from architects to branding agencies and craft studios - will also host workshops and displays open to the public during the festival.

Integral to Clerkenwell Design Week, this year’s Conversations at Clerkenwell programme is set to be the best yet, with leading international designers and architects including Ron Arad, Arik Levy, The Campana Brothers and Sir Peter Cook taking part in an exhilarating series of seminars.

William Knight comments, “I’m delighted to come on board and join the established team at this exciting time. Clerkenwell Design Week is still growing, but has come a long way since its launch in 2010. The festival is now a must-attend event in the international design calendar, attracting thousands of architects, designers, specifiers and buyers from around the world every May.

CDW PRESENTS For this year’s CDW Presents, Studio Weave, design collective Okay Studio and russ + henshaw have been appointed to create projects aiming to push the boundaries of design, in terms of concepts, process and material capabilities. Architecture practice Studio Weave – led by Je Ahn - has created Smith (left), a pavilion that pays homage to Clerkenwell’s heritage as the home to a range of smiths through history. Working alongside structural engineer Webb Yates and fabricator Nicholas Alexander, Studio Weave seeks to showcase the creative use of tools and equipment, and how they can be applied to materials for product making. The pavilion will be made from fibre-cement panels providing a stress-skin, and a group of contemporary craftsmen and smiths will take

Inspired by five American hardwood species – tulipwood, ash, hard maple, red oak and cherry, five design teams from Okay Studio are working independently to create an eclectic mix of designs, showcasing how versatile American hardwood can be. The participating five teams are: Mathias Hahn, Liliana Ovalle, Ed Swan, Andrew Haythornthwaite and Peter Marigold (collaborating for this project), and partnership Hunting and Narud Meanwhile, London-based architects, Lianne Russ and Phil Henshaw of russ + henshaw are working with Turkishceramics to create an installation, entitled Tile Mile (left), at St John’s Gate. Based on the concept of reflection, the installation will celebrate both the built heritage of Clerkenwell and modern Turkish ceramics. The two inner arches of St John’s Gate will feature parallel mirrors - also known as infinity mirrors – which will reflect both the vaulted ceiling of the arch and the intricately tiled floorscape, creating the illusion of an infinite ‘crypt like’ space.

SHOWROOM PARTNERS Clerkenwell is well established as an international creative hotspot, home to over 50 design showrooms with brands from both within and outside the UK. These range from high-end contract furniture, lighting, kitchen, bathroom and material manufacturers. Year-on-year, Clerkenwell Design Week has successfully demonstrated this unrivalled quality supported by creativity and originality. This year, the festival will continue its strong relationships with the local design showrooms, studios and galleries, promoting their latest projects in architecture and design. Following on from last year’s debut to coincide with its first London showroom opening, Italian furniture manufacturer Arper (above left) will return to the festival this year with a key celebration to mark its 25th anniversary. Meanwhile, the festival’s veteran Vitra will present a worldexclusive collective project - a take-on of Ron Arad’s Tom Vac chair (above right), 15 years after it was first launched.

22

This iconic design will be re-styled by selected international designers and architects, and unveiled in Vitra’s showroom during the festival. Keeping the festival fresh is essential, and this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week has introduced some exciting new names to the line-up. Sto Werkstatt (above left), specialists in architectural cladding, has recently opened a new showroom with a cultural twist on Woodbridge Street, while Scandinavian Business Seating will launch the ergonomically designed Noor chair (above centre) at the event. Other new showroom partners include Davison Highley, Wagstaff, Gresham, Morgan and Quadrifoglio. Returning showroom partners with big plans during the festival include: Brinton Carpets, presenting the Deep Grid rug (above right) by Cristian Zuzunaga, and Camira, introducing its new fibre fabrics from nettles and flax and an upcycled woven upholstery fabric.

CONVERSATIONS AT CLERKENWELL Clerkenwell and its creative community have earned a reputation for remaining at the centre of debate, pioneering activities and forwardthinking. Clerkenwell Design Week 2014 boasts a selective range of high-profile talks staged at the top floor of The Design Factory within The Farmiloe Building. With four talks scheduled for each of the three festival days, this focused series delivers world-class content right at the heart of Clerkenwell Design Week. The 2014 programme will address some of the key issues for London’s architecture and design industry. The programme will include talks and insights from leading architects and designers – from Ron Arad and Arik Levy, to The Campana Brothers, Sir Peter Cook (right, pictured with Gavin Robotham) and Farrells architecture practice. In addition, Dezeen will celebrate the launch of its new book, Dezeen Book of Interviews, at the festival with a special interview talk. In partnership with the Design Museum to celebrate its 25th anniversary, as well as its new site opening at the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington in late 2015, Clerkenwell Design Week will also invite influential figures including Patricia Urquiola and Rolf Fehlbaum to host a special talk during the festival entitled DM25. The seminar will explore the developing trends, while reflecting on the direction design will take in the next 25 years.

Penthouse Paddington

A 26

fter purchasing the 14th and 15th floors of a new development adjacent to Paddington Basin, together with a roof terrace, the private owner of the empty shell duplex space commissioned renowned London architects and designers SHH to transform it into a luxurious, cool and contemporary penthouse, to serve as a London pied-à-terre for himself and his extended family. The resulting stylish and unique residence, the largest in the development and offering spectacular views over the city, is an oasis of calm, in considered contrast to its bustling, urban setting – just a short walk from Edgware Road. The brief from the client – with whom SHH had worked previously on a number of commercial schemes in the Middle East – was for the space to function effectively as a bespoke boutique hotel, so that any family member could stay in any of the five bedrooms at any time, whilst the differing functions each individual might also require from the penthouse were all to be subtly incorporated,

This is where everyone can be together, but at the same time can be involved in different activities, from dining or reading to playing games and watching movies, with enough sense of space for all, from the smallest child to the client and his wife or extended family members.’ At the centre of the room is a fireplace island wall, finished in a metallic cross-combed polished plaster, again by DKT Artworks, framing a bespoke, dark-stained oak dining table, which seats ten. Flexform ME dining chairs around the table are upholstered in fabric from Romo’s Zinc range. The dining area is served by an

ultra-contemporary, white Molteni Dada kitchen, which was within the remit of the main contractor.

27

The double-sided fireplace opens also on to the more formal side of the reception room. Here, a sumptuous, bespoke, deep-buttoned leather sofa commands centre stage, positioned perfectly under three striking black and white artworks from German artist Godwin Hoffman. Two low back armchairs from Meridiani and a white lacquer coffee table from Porta Romana complete the ensemble. Punchy accents are achieved by carefullyplaced, deep purple satin and cream silk scatter cushions with copper accessories, which subtly reference the earthy tones of the entrance hall.

pposite, a less formal seating area is defined by the bespoke modular sofa from The Sofa & Chair Company, creating the perfect place to relax and take in the stunning views or to enjoy the apartment’s state-ofthe-art audio-visual system, integrated into the bespoke, full-height joinery. Fabrics and finishes continue in the same soothing grey and metallic vein and a cameo of colour is found in the exquisite ottoman-come-coffee table, a combination of rich macassar ebony with an aubergine, hairon-hide inlay, bespokedesigned by SHH and beautifully executed by Interior Joinery. ‘A very important aspect of this scheme’, David explained, ‘is that all joinery is bespoke. We wanted every available space to have furniture that fitted perfectly, so that no space is wasted or taken up unnecessarily.’ A bespoke low cabinet in grey stained oak serves to connect this less formal area and an arrangement of four

upholstered chairs and low round table makes this the ideal place to savour morning coffee or indulge in evening backgammon. Pulling everything together are two striking, bespoke silk rugs from Tai Ping, with all colours hand-picked to mirror exactly those of the surrounding tones and accents, in both finishes and furniture. ‘Ultimately, the key to the success of this space as a whole is the ability of individual family members to engage in different activities but still remain together, in areas which are intimate without feeling disconnected, something which was of great importance to the client and which was achieved through the clever arrangement of key pieces and an overriding harmonious and balanced palette’, David Spence concluded. Further accommodation on this level includes three of the total five bedrooms, four of which are en suite. The client requested that there be no hierarchy among the five bedrooms,

so that any one room could be occupied at any time by any member of the extended family. Therefore, the approach was a measured one, each with its own individual treatment, but with a commonality which sits comfortably within the context of the entire apartment. Dark brown earthy tones are again evident in bedroom one, anchored by a full-height upholstered bespoke headboard in black fabric with a gold and copper fleck, from Chase Erwin. Finely-woven fabric wall covering from Innovations and supplementary fabrics from Kravet, J Robert Scott and Abbott & Boyd provide the expected level of luxury and the overall feel is one of understated sophistication. As the emphasis in this residence is on the living and family areas, great care was taken to maximise the limited space available in the bedrooms. The rooms are uncluttered yet welcoming andall joinery is bespoke, designed by SHH and expertly made

by Hannah Contracts Ltd., to fit exactly into alcoves and corners, so as not to hinder the flow of passage through the rooms and giving an open and spacious feel. In all bedrooms and indeed throughout the apartment, the finelydetailed joinery, both freestanding and built in, compliments the textured surfaces and luxurious finishes in a very subtle way. Bedrooms two, three, four and five are a continuation of this ethos and are equally pragmatic in their layout, as well as cohesive schematically. The palette moves effortlessly from dark brown and black to cool grey and olive, charcoal and cerulean, limed oak and taupe and to graphite and dark rust. Individual pieces such as a Florence Knoll bench in tungsten leather, an ebony and gold scalloped mirror from Porta Romana and original prints from Liverpool artist Lindsey Moran, add another layer of interest and give each room their own character.

T

he contemporary marble, glass and steel staircase is home to one of the most striking features of this apartment. A double height mural, inspired by Turner and developed by the SHH team with DKT Artworks, is a visual bridge between the two levels and indeed every area of the apartment. An explosion of colours, layered over textured plaster, including all the silvers, greys, purples and copper hues evident throughout, converge in one fantastic, abstract artwork. The effect is stunning and a perfect foil for the sculptural antique bronze and satin brass Lunar pendant light from CTO. A decorative fretwork screen frames the composition and filters the natural light cascading from an adjacent skylight. Descending the stairs to the 14th floor, one enters the second reception room, again benefitting from refreshing streams of natural light and far-reaching views, but forming a more intimate space than the main reception on

the floor above with a casual, relaxed air. A large, bespoke, low back modular sofa, upholstered in carboncoloured cotton and with a generous scattering of cushions in a mixture of silver, gold and plum silks and velvets, sits easily on a linear-patterned silk rug, with a number of loosely-placed ottomans for company. Light grey textured fabric wall covering from Stereo and faux fur throws on the sofa enhance the feeling of warmth and comfort in this informal lounge area. Profiting from the open plan nature of this area and maximising the space available, an informal dining area and study have also been incorporated and are an appropriate extension of the living area. As throughout the apartment, the continuity and cohesiveness of the colour palette and finishes exits here also. The same Stereo wall covering extends to three of the connecting walls, whilst the four dining chairs from Casamilano, that encircle a bespoke round dining

table are upholstered in fabric from Romo, which echoes the tones of the main sofa. A Caboche suspension light from Foscarini gently illuminates, whilst another original print from Lindsey Moran completes this vignette. The study joinery, designed by SHH and again manufactured by Hannah Contracts, who carried out all the interior decorations, is crisp, contemporary and perfectly arranged. A combination of open and closed storage and a series of floating elements, it is a feature in itself, with its geometric design an extrapolation of the fretwork screen on the floor above, offset against an exquisite two tone silk feature wall covering, in deep purple and gold. The monolithic dark stained oak desk is a playful contrast to the delicate shelving and defines this space. Like the main reception room, the nature of this entire space is multifunctional, aligned with the client’s wishes.

Along with the aforementioned two bedrooms on this level, a private cinema completes the accommodation. Distinctly dark and moody, it is the perfect setting for watching movies on the 2mwide projector screen, integrated within bespoke joinery that also houses concealed speakers and all the necessary audiovisual equipment. Indeed, throughout the apartment, the audio-visual capacity is extensiveand all areas, including lighting and window treatments, can be controlled independently via remote Crestron panels.

>

The textured fabric wall covering on two sides is a fusion of charcoal and mid-grey and the wall opposite the screen is clad in randomly scratched oak panels finished in the same midgrey.

it from above, with recessed halo lighting, the effect is quietly dramatic while also providing a warm glow of indirect light. The bespoke modular sofa, again from the Sofa & Chair Company, provides ample seating for family viewing and loose ottomans and large floor cushions give flexibility and cosiness when desired. Upholstered in fabrics from Romo’s Zinc series and ranging in colour from graphite, ash, and black to silver, gold, copper and cream, the link with other areas is maintained and the contemporary cohesiveness observed. Black B&B Italia side tables on the silver shimmering rug are another sculptural element and the finishing touch to a room of considerable comfort and style.

Of course, no city centre penthouse would be complete without great views and this particular location certainly does not disappoint. Up on the impressive roof terrace, London completely envelopes

little embellishment and the understated treatment of this external extension of the apartment befits this and does not compete with the views. The contemporary, low modular furniture, in

dark brown vinyl with sand coloured cushions, is arranged in distinct groups. Starting inthe South West corner, an L–shaped sofa and ottoman provide the perfect vantage point from which to experience the city in all her glory.

Cedar lattice screens, olive trees and heathers in dark grey rectangular planters further soften the expanse and help frame the various zones, leading you leisurely across the terrace. The next arrangement

of seating, another L– shaped sofa with coffee table and ottomans, sits central to an outdoor TV, built in to a dark slate and grey stained iroko surround. Just beyond is a spacious dining area with seating for eight and an outdoor kitchen with integrated BBQ and fridge. Finally, and to complete the luxury penthouse brief, a 3m by 2m Jacuzzi, clad again in dark slate and iroko, offers - day or night - a great example of how life could, or should be.... Above all, this penthouse scheme fulfils the client’s brief, providing him with the home he wanted, through clever planning and an astute awareness of family life. But more than that, the quality of the finishes, the balanced yet provocative palette, the unique individual pieces and indeed the overriding commitment to considered design, come together effortlessly, culminating in a sophisticated and harmonious slant on a contemporary, luxury penthouse in a vibrant 21st century city.

London Mews Development Sold for Record Price by Landmass London What could be 2014’s Best Residential Property; a London mews development has sold to an international buyer for nearly £7 million, designed by renowned developers Landmass London. From an uninhabitable and dilapidated Grade II listing to a beautiful and contemporary three bedroom home over five floors, the mews development of Victorian style in Belgravia has been completely reconfigured by renowned developers, Landmass London. Purchased for close to £7 million by an international buyer, this mews development could easily be this year’s Best Residential Property 2014 award winner. The home is considered to be the most expensive of its kind in London in the last 18 months; with house prices on the rice, nearly 7.5% in 2013, this could very likely be a fantastic investment by the new owner. Offering a gorgeous roof terrace facing a southerly direction, amazing use of space planning to maximise every usable space possible, and a huge introduction of natural light throughout, this home is an absolute gem. The Sunday Times and Evening Standard tout the mews development as “extravagant” and “a model example of chic London living.”

39

In addition, the home adds serious “wow factor” with the retractable glass ceiling above part of the reception room and glass flooring below which allows the natural light to reach the lower ground floor. Instead of that lower ground floor feeling like a typical lower level space, this one has ceiling heights set at 3.2 metres, giving the feeling of a full size upper level floor. All across London, especially in the Prime Central area, these mews developments are being gobbled up very quickly. Much of the reason for such a run on one particular type of property is the uniquely British feel of these homes, showing on the outside some of the old world charm while inside they can be fitted with all the modern luxuries anyone could ask for. In addition to the look and feel, many of them are located in some of the most historic areas of London such as Knightsbridge, which required the rules of conservation be followed throughout the area.

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 08 Landmass Managing Director, Alan Waxman stated these homes are popular as well because “you can also lock up and leave the house as you want with no huge annual service charge.” Landmass London has been remodelling homes such as this in London for over fifteen years, and according to Waxman speaking about rebuilding another exciting mews development, “at the time it was just a hole in the ground with four walls around it. We’d dismantled the interior of the house and dug down 3.4 metres. No one has done this

in a London mews before.” According to the Telegraph, the nine-metre waterfall tumbling to the bottom of the basement is “an underground paradise.” By this thinking, this gorgeous London mews development that warranted such a massive price tag is not only beautiful to look at on the outside with the old world charm, chic and new on the inside, but also is a real trailblazer for other mews developments to follow.

JOI-DESIGN Brings a Breath of Fresh Air to the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère

(London – 24 March 2014) JOI-Design has recently renovated the public areas of the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère, one of Switzerland’s most celebrated Grand Hotels. 44

T

he transformation reaffirms the property’s reputation as an acclaimed mountain resort by enhancing its elegant historical features whilst introducing modern comforts. Originally built in 1875 in a Belle Époque style, the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère is located in Davos, a municipality in the Swiss Alps renowned not only for its winter sports but also, during warmer months, as an outstanding holiday destination for outdoor activities where hiking, biking and ski trails meander through dense forests and wild romantic valleys that offer breath-taking mountain vistas. This untamed natural environment clearly shapes local life and was a major influence upon JOIDesign’s concept for the stylish refurbishment of the hotel’s public spaces.

Along with regional references, the design was also inspired by nostalgic notions of exclusive Grand Hotels. Fine details, such as the dark, fishbonepatterned veneer in the joinery of the front desk suggest the craftsmanship of past eras. Redesigned spaces blend the traditional charm of an established grand dame with the first class amenities of a modern building, so guests can retreat to the luxurious comfort of the hotel to recount their adventures after a day skiing or hiking. The public areas are expansive yet configured to accommodate all guest scenarios, whether a lone traveller, a couple, or a group of family and friends. Flowing seamlessly from one to another, the lounge, café,

ISSUE 08 - SUMMER 2014

and bar areas were envisioned as a harmonious sanctuary underlined by a subtle palette and intimate nooks with supremely comfortable furnishings throughout. The designers took their cues from the earthy tones and verdant landscape of the mountain ranges. In the lounge, the interiors emphasise original features while instilling a renewed and contemporary feel. Here, as well as in the café, original mouldings on the ceilings and walls were retained and refreshed with a crisp white finish that highlights their elegant ornate detailing. Bespoke carpeting designed with large scrolled motifs on a strié background recalls the hues of the rich Alpine soil; this is offset by a lighter-toned ellipse which sweeps throughout the space to draw attention to the piano in its centre, used to entertain guests each evening.

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 08

Inset flush within the unembellished “divider” walls, espresso toned bookshelves made from local pine form a clean simplicity that balances the intricacy of the ceiling and floors. Newspapers hung on pegs recall the traditional Viennese coffee houses and create an impression of a cosy library where guests feel encouraged to communicate, whether as a relaxed conversation, checking emails or even writing an old-fashioned postcard. Above the piano, a vibrant moss-green chandelier made from hand-blown Murano glass punctuates the space’s calmness with a bright ‘pop!’ of colour that enlivens the atmosphere.

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 08

By day spaces are flooded with sunlight through tall windows displaying the glorious alpine scenery beyond. Sumptuous and inviting, furnishings encourage guests to linger into the night. Generous chocolate-velvet chesterfield sofas and cocooning wingback armchairs have been given a modern twist that effortlessly balances classical elegance with contemporary comfort, while occasional tables fashioned from burnished metal tops and tinted glass bases add a further note of refinement. A coveted spot relaxing in front of one of the original stately fireplaces is guaranteed to warm both the feet and the soul. The café, with its tailored herringbone and leather upholstery dining chairs and richly toned tables, is a bright, informal space to enjoy small meals and light snacks in stylish surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling glass screens digitally imprinted with a filigree pattern provide a degree of separation while maintaining a clear connection to the adjacent lounge. Again, eye-catching green chandeliers add joie de vivre to the scene. Located between the lounge and café, the bar has been designed as a place for guests to gather, make new friends, and share stories about their adventures. Colourful ambient lighting sets the mood as day unfolds into evening; contemporary barstools line-up around an illuminated counter to signal that it is the place to meet for a ‘sundowner’ after a thrilling day in the mountains.

In the first of these rooms, gpstudio worked closely with some of The Whisky Shop’s key retail partners – Diageo, Brown-Forman, and Whyte & Mackay - to help amplify and tell stories about their brands. In appreciation of the rich heritage and expertise of the product, the spirits are presented in the same way as a fine perfume. A glass gantry with black UV-bonded glass links the front retail space with

the “sell me” room, The Whisky Shop Library. Here, customers can choose from a vast selection of rare and exclusive whiskies. The materials palette mixes raw steel with traditional oak and slate, hinting to the heritage of the product whilst telling the story in a very modern way that is relevant to the product, brand and consumer. The new store also has striking design features, including inset angel wings at the top of the Library stairs. These are a signature symbol of The Whisky Shop, in reference to whisky terminology of ‘the angels’ share’.

FORTNUM & MASON CANDLE DEPARTMENT

L

aunched in September 2013, the candle department in Fortnum & Mason merged heritage with creating the ultimate destination for candles. Candles are integral to the history of Fortnum’s. Three hundred and seven years ago, William Fortnum was a footman at the Court of Queen Anne, where one of his tasks was to empty halfburnt candles.

Instead of leaving the wax to go to waste, he would take the used candles home make new candles from them to sell to the ladies of the court. Following his success, Mr Fortnum joined forces with his landlord, Hugh Mason, and they went on to open Fortnum & Mason in 1707.

The gpstudio design captures this entrepreneurial spirit and carefully references the brand’s heritage, whilst championing its enduring relevance to a modern audience. The design preserves the original architectural features of the space, including handcrafted panels, ceilings and pillars which reference the brand’s heritage whilst bell jars allow customers

to sample the scent of individual candles and focus on the modern trends in candle design.

HERSHESONS

A

favourite of celebrities, models and the press, Hershesons tasked gpstudio with creating a luxurious customer experience in a space that reflected Daniel and Luke Hershesons‘s highend fashion credentials. To ensure that their design enhanced the customer journey, gpstudio looked at the whole customer experience - from arrival and coat check, right through to the washrooms.

The salon has been completely re-envisioned, with a brand new look for the shop front, offices and treatment rooms. A high quality, yet simple palette of marble, brass, wood and polished plaster is used throughout; creating a modern, luxurious feel. This reflects Hershesons’ status as an industry leader and makes a bold statement about the brand. The brand embraces the fact that hairdressing is continuously evolving and, similarly, so is the company. A black marble centrepiece sets the tone for the salon, producing a striking architectural feature. This forms half of the shop

front façade, as well as incorporating a cash desk and a cloakroom. The insertion of a brass staircase in the atrium adds another focal point to the salon. In a break with traditional salon design, the workstations have been moved away from the walls and transformed into a cantilevered, metal crafted workstation in the middle of the room. This spans across two floors, and creates a central spine more akin to

an art gallery than a hair salon. The treatment rooms have been completely overhauled, with the use of wood and soft lighting giving a more relaxing and intimate customer experience. Parquet wooden flooring on the ground floor adds warmth to the space, whereas marble gives the lower ground floor a more timeless feel. To focus on exquisite service, customers are greeted at a small discrete desk, similar to that of a maître-D in a restaurant, and reservations and bookings have been taken ‘back of house’.

London & Home Counties Safes w w w . h o m e s a f e s . n e t

London & Home County Safes was founded in the late 1980’s by David Harvey and Sandy Victor. Jointly, David and Sandy have over 60 years experience in the safe & lock industry. Their experience and depth of knowledge, combined with a focus on delivering outstanding customer service, has helped to make London & Home County Safes one of the foremost Safe companies in the United Kingdom. It all began in the early 1980’s when David and Sandy were two young chaps working together as Safe Engineers for two different companies in Central London. During their lunch breaks they used to imagine what it would be like to join forces and start their own Safe & Lock Company. Years passed, David and Sandy continued installing and maintaining security safes for clients in London and the South East of England. They increased their experience, expertise and knowledge base. They married their respective partners, and started families. By this time they had risen through the ranks in their respective companies and were both managing teams of engineers.

The prices of our safes includes FREE delivery and professional installation in the following locations

One day in 1989 David called Sandy and said “I have just placed a deposit on a shop in London. We’ve served our time; hand in your notice, it’s happening”. On that day Totteridge & Whetstone Locksmiths was born. From day one, security safes was a key element of the business and eventually evolved into a separate entity called London & Home County Safes. David and Sandy’s partnership has endured and they still own and operate the business, although it is somewhat larger than those early Today, they operate throughout London and the Home Counties, supplying and professionally installing security safes for customers in their homes and businesses. With fully equipped teams of vetted and ordering and booking, they are truly unique in this industry.

RPW Design gives Hilton Rotterdam a new lease of life

>

Leading hospitality interior design practice RPW Design has completed the renovation of Hilton Rotterdam, bringing the interiors of this 50-year-old modernist architectural icon into the 21st century. Built in 1963 by one of the foremost architects of the post-war modernism in the Netherlands, Hugh Maaskant, Hilton Rotterdam was one of the first upscale hotels to welcome visitors to the city centre. Its exterior exemplifies the glamour, sophistication and forward-looking excitement of the Dutch society of the 50s and 60s, a time when Rotterdam began to reinvent itself as a modern, vibrant and multicultural metropolis.

Fifty years on, this Grand Lady of Rotterdam has been given a new lease of life after a €36 million two-phase refurbishment of the entire hotel, including its 254 guestrooms and suites, meeting space and all public areas. “Our aim was to create a seamless and sophisticated language of style that subtly reinforces the location and period, although with a contemporary touch in every detail and material”, explains Jan Wilson, RPW Design.

Offering a high-end, residential environment, the lobby comprises a new, stylish coffee/tea lounge and furniture pieces arranged in small seating groups enhanced with bespoke rugs, calming palette evocative of Rotterdam’s light colours and patterns. Other sources of inspiration which have given the hotel a strong and relevant design identity include the city’s architecture, its port – one of the world’s busiest, and the lace-making and artistic traditions of the Netherlands. “We looked at the colours, shapes, textures, and the scale and proportions of the environment, and applied them to the interiors. The scale and pattern of the Flemish brickwork formed the basis of the design of a striking mirrored wall in the hotel’s new restaurant, while decorative lace features echo the surroundings and help to achieve a homely feel in the guestrooms”, says Jan.

The organic bedding products used by Abaca are produced using materials created by traditional farming methods, avoiding the use of highly toxic fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.

These production methods not only offer great benefits to the farmers and the environment, but increasingly enable you to choose products which will be safer for you and your family. More and more people are choosing to avoid the risk of chemical contamination of their homes and bodies, and Abaca products now let you decide to make your bedrooms a much more natural environment. Beautiful embroidered bedlinen designed by textile artist Lyn Shailer; inspired by the beauty of nature, and using the finest of linens and silks as her canvass and the hues of embroidery silken threads as her palette, she produces her art. How does nature inspire? It never ceases to delight as well as inspire ... the flora and fauna which is in abundance in the Countryside: mother nature has her own conucopia of creativity and art. There is a mystical and almost indescribable beauty about the way a flower, like a snow drop, can appear, under the blanket weight of snow, emerging with its pure and delicate flower-head bowed and subdued as if in silent prelude to the symphony of Spring or the manner in which a cluster of forget-me-nots can quite naturally grow collectively into its own exquisite form; so touching to see and sense - in the same way a note can be played out in a melody which can linger long after it has been heard ... it is touching moments like these that I love, and it is the essence of moments like these that I recall as inspiration into art and embroidery. www.lynshailer.co.uk info@lynshailer.co.uk

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 08 The electric ESSE EL 13Amp offers classic quality with modern performance. The EL 13Amp is one of ESSE’s most innovative, ecofriendly cookers and benefits from ‘power share’ technology. Usually, the ovens and hotplate of an electric cooker are each allotted a set amount of energy. The EL 13Amp is unique in that it ‘shares’ the total amount of energy available to the whole cooker. If only one oven is in use, it will heat extremely quickly. If you use both ovens and the hotplate, the energy will be pulsed around the cooker to where it is needed. This ‘power share’ technology means temperatures are easily maintained and cooking performance is continuously powerful.

ASB GlassFloor has already brought a revolution to sports flooring. A multi-purpose sports hall has to have the right marking lines for a whole range of courts and pitches. A problem to which ASB GlassFloor has come up with a unique solution. The elastic, semi-translucent floor is made from toughened safety glass with an aluminium substructure and due to LED marking lines, which are activated with the help of a touch screen, it offers an immense range of applications. The surface is etched and has burnt-in ceramic dots, which makes the surface non-slip and anti-reflective. The floor has ideal performance criteria and astonishing low maintenance and durability attitudes, unseen in flooring to date. www.asbglassfloor.com

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 08 Richard Cooper Bronze is a unique business specialising in the design and creation of highly collectable foundry bronze sculptures. We work with some of the UK’s leading sculptors to produce breath taking works of art in miniature, through to life-size form.

38

Each sculpture is made using the ancient art of lost wax casting, a method which requires a great deal of skill and care. The traditional process of applying patina and fixing with heat gives the design the desired finish or ‘bronze’ colour. These processes add an immeasurable value to the sculpture being that each one is made by hand, therefore unique and to be admired for many years. The bronzes are packaged with care in a beautiful branded box with a certificate of authenticity and a biography for the sculptor.

Bespoke Garden Ceramics www.christineannrichards.co.uk The gardens of China and Japan have been an ongoing inspiration for the large pots and water-features that I make mainly ‘to commission’. Since my first visit to China more than three decades ago I have looked towards the east as a source of inspiration both in my interior thrown porcelain and garden ceramics. THE ART OF MANUFACTURING THE ART OF MOVEMENTS

TAG HEUER CARRERA CALIBRE 7 TWIN-TIME AUTOMATIC – 41MM

91

www.tagheuer.co.uk

CARRERA: THE EVOLUTION OF AN ICON Manufacturing is an art form at TAG Heuer, at the avant-garde of industrial creation. Backed by 154 years of know-how and mastered by each of its designers, engineers and craftsman, it is expressed in every in-house dial, case and movement it creates. This inimitable artistry especially reveals itself in the Carrera collection. With a new fleet housing TAG Heuer’s newest movement — its second movement entirely manufactured in-house, this time with an unprecedented 80-hour power reserve — and a new outstanding offer of Carrera watches and chronographs of classic design, this iconic legend continues apace.

>

The indispensable accessory for today’s sophisticated traveler, the Carrera Calibre 7 enables the wearer to keep an eye – and a foothold – in each time zone thanks to the TwinTime function. The 24-hour scale around the inner bezel ring of the sunburst-effect anthracite dial indicates the second time zone via the central hand, cleverly replaced by a sporty red arrow. The 41 mm steel case requires 15 stamping operations to achieve the required degree of perfection and is fitted with a sapphire crystal case back designed to reveal the secrets of the movement in action. Fashion In Nature UCA Rochester Graduate Shows Her Creative Design Using Nature My name is Leah Webb. I am a 22-year-old Fashion and Textiles Print student. In the graduating year at UCA Rochester. I have always loved fashion; I’m always looking for new ideas that inspire me and I can interpret into my work. I have a graphic style of drawing which I reflect in my prints, I like to combine traditional media like silkscreen printing, painting, drawing, watercolours and using fine liners with digital media using Photoshop. I work by bringing in the elements of hand drawn and hand printed to a digitally enhanced final outcome. 92

My concept for my Final Collection is all about looking at nature from a different perspective, using the idea of distortion within nature and looking for a hidden meaning behind my prints. Inspiration can stem from many things, Nature being a primary source for many of my designs. For this project I have looked at nature conservation, animal protection as well as the idea that nature can be used as a whole and not just have parts taken from it. I get most of my inspiration from studying animals, trees, plants and other natural forms, then through my drawings and photographs I can translate them into detailed and intricate prints. Observational and detailed drawings have always been a key element throughout my work, combining them with digital media and hand printed techniques to create my final outcome. For me its an appreciation of balance, space and a sensitive use of colour, that gives my prints something different as well as maintaining a bold graphic feel. For this collection I have focused on autumn, a specific season within British woodlands in which all my prints and garment collection has been based around. My prints for this collection are mostly made up of Photography taken by myself with hand drawn woodland wildlife, while giving some of the prints a dark distorted look a theme that flows throughout my project.

MAGNUS CARLSEN AND LILY COLE FOR G-STAR RAW SPRING/SUMMER 2014 A “sneak peak” of the talent for the Spring/Summer 2014 G-Star RAW campaign ABOUT G-STAR RAW

94

G-Star RAW is the innovative denim brand. Since 1989, G-Star has been a denim pioneer that is known for its directional and cutting edge style. Its philosophy has always been “Just the product” with a focus on denim craftsmanship and innovation. G-Star originated the concept of 3D denim in 1996 with the introduction of the G-Star Elwood, and dedication to untreated RAW denim, which created a revolution within the denim industry. g-star.com

Magnus Carlsen first caused a stir when he featured in the Autumn/Winter 2010 campaign for G-Star and heads will turn again when Carlsen fronts the S/S 2014 campaign partnered with Lily Cole, best illustrating the brand’s innovation. Famous for his uncompromising and strong style of play at the age of 13, Carlsen is currently the world’s top ranking chess player. Comparable to Carlsen, Cole began a career in fashion at the age of 16 on the cover of British Vogue. While studying art history, she has since starred in various films, launched a successful ‘giving initiative’ and campaigned for environmental sustainability. Key style in the campaign is the Type C pant. The Type C is the latest and most unrestrained cut in the G-Star RAW 3D denim line. The Type C for both men and women is constructed with an extremely tapered fit and elongated rear pockets. Since releasing the world’s first 3D denim in 1996, G-Star has continuously reinvented denim construction. As with the G-Star Elwood, Arc and A-Crotch, the Type C is a product of both extensive development and the G-Star belief of unlimited possibilities. G-Star RAW. Just the Product.

GUCCI TIMEPIECES & JEWELRY

INTRODUCES GUCCI HANDMASTER AUTOMATIC TIMEPIECE SHOWCASING GUCCI’S WATCH-MAKING CRAFTSMANSHIP Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry is pleased to introduce a new collection for men and women as part of its premium line of watches. The Gucci Handmaster reflects the range of artisan abilities of Gucci Timepieces’ own watchmaking atelier in La Chaux-de-Fonds, where Italian style is matched by Swiss quality; all watches are assembled by hand, and special attention is given to the creation of each timepiece. The men’s model contains a GP3300 movement with 46-hour power reserve while the women’s timepiece comes with a GP2700 movement and 36-hour power reserve; movements are provided by Sowind Manufacture. Each watch features a transparent case back that displays the timepiece’s inner mechanisms; this includes an oscillating weight engraved with Gucci’s iconic diamante pattern.

98

The Gucci Handmaster for men (32.5 x 33mm) comes with a polished stainless steel rectangular case with slightly inclined sides, which lends depth to the piece. The timepiece has a vintage look underlined by a distinct dial: a black sun-brushed finish, showing the recognizable diamante motif is overlaid with silver Roman numerals and hands in a classical design. Core functionalities include a date display seen at half-past one, a power reserve indicator at 5 o’clock, and small second counter at 9 o’clock. The black dial is matched with a black crocodile leather strap, which boasts a stirrup buckle; recalling the House’s equestrian detailing. Women are offered a similar design (26.5 x 27.5mm) in polished stainless steel with pink gold-coloured accents on hands and numerals. Once again, the black sun-brushed dial shows a traditional sundial design encircled by Roman numerals with a date counter at 6 o’clock. Iconic Gucci styling is seen in the diamante pattern background and “Gucci Automatic” at 12 o’clock. A matching black alligator leather strap is combined with the stirrup-buckle, as a finishing touch. The Gucci Handmaster timepiece is also offered in a precious variant, crafted with an 18kt gold case and matching gold details on the dial.
