SHELBY, SOFA THAT TAKES OFF THE GROUND

G.VEGNI - G.GUALTIEROTTI The designer Giancarlo Vegni starts close partnerships with several companies of diversified products in Italy and abroad including CasadesĂşs.

>

The collection Shelby is conceived as a linear product, visually it floats above the floor. All of its volume is supported by simple slim feet which slope on both ends from the metallic frame, which though seemingly very slim, allows the creation of sofas of more than three meters length. It comes with many cushions, thus it is easy to feel comfortable. The collection permits numerous combinations and this way adapts to different environments, it permits the creation of large sofas, sofas with chaise longue as well as corner sofas. The version Shelby Class permits us to place the piece in contemporary ambiances. The technical resolution is the same, but the additional frill in the lower part provides an extra richness to this Product.

Structure in wood and polyester varnished tubular steel. Wood covered with polyurethane foam with different densities and polyester fiber. Seat cushion in polyurethane foam covered with protective case, filled with white duck feathers, down and polyester fiber. Back cushions have a protective case and internal divisions. Filled with spongy polyester fiber, sterilized white duck feathers and down. Suspension: elastic grids. Feet in chromed steel bright finish, mate nickel or bright graphite, removable by means of screws. Shelby Class legs painted in black (not visible). Cover completely removable, except for upholstery in leather or similar. Frame (arms and back) can be removed by means of screws.

ORWELL, A TABLEWOOD 100% CASADESÚS

>

The main characteristic of this new version of the Orwell is to replace the former methacrylate panels by wooden panels matching with the top. Thus we present a table 100% made of wood, which adapts with a wide range of ambiances. The support becomes the main protagonist, the alternation of the different parts placed produces a really beautiful effect of light and shade. Top and base supports in wood, DM veneered or lacquered. THE INTERIORS GROUP FIT OUT NEW HEADQUARTERS FOR THE GSMA

The Interiors Group, together with architecture and design group Engine Room Design, have recently created a modern, cutting-edge interior design for headquarters of the GSMA, the organisation that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide. The GSMA recently relocated to larger premises on the second floor of The Walbrook Building1, London and the 45,000 sq ft design and fit out embodies flexibility and adaptability while also serving a cost-effective example of the use of interactive technology and integrated IT infrastructure within the workplace.

20

The GSMA’s previous offices had a traditionally corporate layout with bench desking throughout. The client brief to The Interiors Group and Engine Room was to create a ‘marketplace’ for employees and visitors to come together and engage in creative enterprise that was not just visually stimulating and representative of a modern technology company, but also a platform for the GSMA to implement its strategy for new working methods, focusing specifically on agility and team working. The client also required as many meeting points as possible – one challenging element of the brief was that company houses 200 staff but due to the nature of its business, frequent international visitors and clients they would need space designed to accommodate up to 600 people. The colour concept is principally white with bold blocks of red, which echoes the corporate and brand colour and is picked out almost immediately in reception as well as in the furniture. Michael O’Hara, GSMA Chief Marketing Officer commented: “We are absolutely delighted with our new London Headquarters. Engine Room have exceeded all expectations and delivered an amazing environment for our staff. In addition to being visually stimulating, our new offices accommodate many different work styles and encourage greater collaboration across the entire organisation.” Linear and symmetrical lines in the reception area creates a futuristic feel with an added “wow” factor and visitors are met with the striking contrast of a bold red against white walls. The “red” strip runs from the floor to the ceiling acting as a visual frame for the reception desk. This is coupled with two back-lit reception desks, block feature lights directly above the desk and inset LED tube overhead lighting which runs through the ceiling all in linear lines which helps create a strong visual impact. At the entrance of the GSMA offices, the stunning reception has open bookcases on either side of the door which offer a welcoming feel to the visitor. Flanking the entrance are six, two-person conference booths, each with a ‘lid’ on top of each of which has acoustic properties. A red beam of light is automatically switched on and projected on to the ceiling signifying that the booth is occupied. Beyond the reception desk, visitors enter the “piazza”, a public space at the heart of this office. This zone has been carefully designed to suit a variety of individual and group requirements and features a mixture of soft seating: individual lounge chairs, standing height benches with perching stools, high back sofas, individual lounge chairs and fixed banquet style seating. This area is multi-purpose: visitors can wait in

this space, small groups can come together for general discussion or it can be used as an informal meeting space. A gigantic media wall has also been installed above the tea point, the media content for which is designed to its unique specifications and features industry and corporate information. The chrome counter tea point with matching fixtures and fittings enables GSMA staff to select their morning brew via the touchpad connected to the drinks dispenser. Additional interactive stations running down one side of the piazza showcase the latest gadget from smartphones and touchpads to smart glasses and even a smart dog collar! From reception through to the spacious office floor, each area has been carefully planned and fitted out with built- in flexibility to help reduce the monotony of day-to-day office life and maximise creativity and the potential for innovative thinking. All booths, pods, meeting and conference rooms, even desks, have been fitted with intelligent pre-booking systems which allows authorised employees and visitors to schedule meetings from any part of the world via their mobile device. The system updates itself, organises and schedules the meeting for the user, minimising delays and complications. Furniture installed through the office, such as the breakout sofas and individual lounge seats are all fitted with power points. Due to the company’s steady flow of visitors and clients, desks are also fitted with individual pre-booking systems. Desks have palm-sized tablets which light up red when booked by the user for an hour, day or week. Each tablet displays scheduling info and a user is allocated with an individual swipe card and pin number. The Interiors Group and Engine room ensured the design and fit-out delivers an equal balance of work and fun with the mix of closed and public spaces for all employees and the GSMA’s visitors. Consequently, there is a selection of standard office desks for executives, workbenches, workstations and hot desking options which are split into different departments. In total, 15 different types of meeting facilities are available including individual thinking rooms, breakout areas for informal meetings, two-person conference booths, meeting pods, group meeting rooms and standing height desks. The largest conference room is a clever example of how The Interiors Group and Engine room have delivered a versatile space. It is divided into four separate rooms for daily use, however, this can quickly be converted via the bi-folding walls to form a larger conference space. The room houses a smart, interactive AV system which automatically directs sound output from the front and back speakers when altered into a single space. The Interiors Group and Engine Room have delivered a design that captures the GSMA’s brand values and draws inspiration from the company’s flagship event, the Mobile World Congress. The result embraces the latest cutting- edge technologies to create a working environment that inspires and energises its employees. The Interiors Group has over 27 years of experience delivering stunning commercial environments. They are widely proven and trusted by both clients and professional project managers to deliver business environments on time and on budget.

Tremoille by Stephanie Coutas Interior designer Stephanie Coutas transformed this elegant Haussmannian apartment in the eighth arrondissement of Paris into a modern and refined piedà-terre, using contemporary furniture and artworks to transform it into a bright and inviting living space. > www.theartofdesignmagazine.com

>

An American New Yorkbased actress commissioned Stephanie Coutas to design a pied-à-terre with the “spirit of Paris” whilst also incorporating the type of ‘luxury hotel look’ that she is accustomed to. And so, Coutas designed a light-filled, cosy setting to resemble a luxury hotel suite for the 215m2 space nestled in one of the swankiest areas of Paris: the Golden Triangle between the famous Avenue Montaigne and Avenue Georges V. The interior designer has completely made over the chic and contemporary apartment by gently phasing out the Haussmannian side of the building without destroying its soul. She Issue 13 - 2015

focused on comfort, for example by putting bathrooms in each of the four bedrooms and decorating everything in a classic and sophisticated style. “We entirely redesigned the volumes,” she says, “and reworked the pathway and lighting. We also designed most of the furniture so it didn’t conform to one single style. That’s why we went bargain-hunting for works of art, bought photos by Elodie Lachaud and Lumas, and added bronze vases by Tom Dixon, paintings by Rico and portraits of film stars such as the Audrey Hepburn in one of the bedrooms – a nod to the lady of the house’s profession.”

We entirely redesigned the volumes and reworked the pathway and lighting. We also designed most of the furniture so it didn’t conform to one single style.

23

Famous for her prestigious projects imbued with strength and femininity, Stephanie Coutas has applied her signature looks here: graphic effects (e.g. the marble flooring in the hallway), soft colour ways, pale oak parquet, white walls and marble dust in the hallway, and taupe fabrics dotted with vibrant colours such as the stunning ice blue adorning the velvet sofas from Luxury Living. Sophisticated details also feature in the designer’s artistic vision in the form of embroidered leather, varied textures created with matte and shiny fabrics, leather wall panels in the living room etc.

And to bring the pied-à-terre into the 21st century, the interior designer collaborated with some of the best names in interior décor, with whom she works continually: Larsen, Rubelli and Lelièvre for curtains and fabrics, Tai Ping Carpets that she designed herself, Pouenat lighting, and Bisazza mosaic tiles whose iridescent gleam adorn the bathroom walls, arranged alongside other unique pieces that embody her work.

> Stéphanie Coutas Stéphanie Coutas is first and foremost a devotee to craftsmanship and savoir-faire, who also designs plush, elegant and warm spaces. She subtly fuses her love of beautiful workmanship and romanticism to create neoclassical and contemporary interiors imbued with modern magic.

24

She was brought up in Asia and spent most of her childhood abroad in stylish locations which sparked her passion for beautiful homes and interiors. She began her professional life in fashion before opening her interior design agency, 1001 maisons, in 2005 where she worked with a team of architects, decorators and designers on private homes, hotels and yachts in France and abroad. All her designs feature clean lines combined with spectacular decor, nude tones with precious wood, dévoré velvet, Murano glass and shagreen. Design is also one of her passions and at last year’s Designer’s Days, she presented the Salamander Chair, made in collaboration with furniture maker Henryot & Cie. With its neoclassical shape, padded white leather seat adorned with a pair of wire salamanders, the chair embodies the haute couture furniture that the designer has always loved. Stéphanie Coutas was recently commissioned to design several suites for the Nouveau Paquebot France, including a spectacular 70m2 suite with a 360° rotating bed in front of a bay window. The mother-ofpearl and ebony inlay on the main door, dressing table in Murano glass, alabaster wall, silk rug and leather ceiling add the finishing touches to the luxurious look. Stéphanie Coutas is currently working on several projects: furnishing a villa in Cairo and a palace in the Middle East, redecorating a luxury 15th century 4* hotel in Burgundy and decorating private apartments in Paris. She is also launching her next collection of bespoke furniture, lighting and curtain tiebacks.

Dura redesign the garage,

a forgotten room

32

Perfect homes are a rare commodity; after all, not everybody is a practiced designer or architect. Home owners can agonise over renovation decisions for months, spending weekend after weekend looking at every option available, discussing the finish, the storage facilities, the size of their room, and ensuring that the final design matches the same standard as the rest of their home. As new builds continue to become smaller, how we utilise our space is becoming paramount with 69% of fully occupied homes saying they do not have sufficient storage facilities. Why therefore, is the biggest room with the most floor and wall space in our homes being ignored? The garage. Dura, the original innovators of the fitted garage concept have 17 years’ experience and their award winning modular cabinets provide you the flexibility to create your exact design, from your architects drawing or a site visit conducted by one of their experienced designers. Designed and manufactured within the UK you are offered a complete personalisation service from custom colours and graphics to multiple configuration options allowing you to inject personality into your design. Testimonials from the world’s leading automotive brands including Rolls Royce and Aston Martin, are an accolade to Dura’s combination packages that allow you to maximise storage, whilst ensuring security through lockable units.

Betta Living’s 2015 Trend Predictions 2015 will once again see an influx of NEW interior trends as we look to update our homes with fresh takes on seasonal themes (and evolve current trends) or make a total step change with brand new on-trend styles all together to really make an impact in 2015. So what’s going to be hot in 2015? 34

The design team from Betta Living has identified a number of key trends for 2015 that have helped to shape its new products, accessories and styling. Here are a pick of the looks that it predicts will be most popular in fitted kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices in the coming year. Betta Living’s head of design, Amanda Watson says: Stimuli for 2015’s top interior design trends come from all areas of our daily lives, from catwalks to a walk in the park, and classic watercolours of the 19th century to iridescent finishes from the 80s. As a UK retailer of fitted kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms we also scour the leading European design shows to draw inspiration from around the world that we then feel will be relevant for British homes and customers in the UK.

Colours There will be some strong colour trends this year with big hitters like Dulux, Pantone and fashion pundits hinting at indulgent greens, Marsala, Copper Blush and moreish custard yellow as key colours to invest in if you want to be on trend in 2015. Also look out for tangerine orange, toasted almond and glacier grey, popular in kitchens and bedrooms alike.

Ever Green Verdant palettes in our home decors are coming from the catwalk, expressed in luxury heritage tailoring, green feathers, green sheepskin and grassy lace statement pieces. Applying green hues into the home is not about bringing plants in, it’s about the colour green and greenery in all its ‘faux’ and synthetic forms. To really achieve this look to full effect, be brave with green and go all out – mixing vibrant green shades and textures in dramatic high impact ways. Another influence on this trend is Google earth. Arial views of the countryside show how the hues of green fields connect in naturally beautiful ways, which is being cleverly replicated in home interior schemes from rugs to wall tiles. Pantone has announced its colour of the year as Marsala. Betta Living’s popular Arts & Crafts kitchen shows how this shade can be applied to fabulous effect.

> While Dulux’ colour of the year is just a softer pink/red hue named Copper Blush. This versatile pinky orange will complement grey tones, woods and metallic, especially copper. This warmer palette reflects a more positive outlook for the year.

36 Pastels At Dusk 2015 sees an update on the sugary sweet candy colours of previous years to a more complex, dusky and rich colour palette. Mixing (or colour blocking) the 2015 colour palette in one room, or even one wall, really works this look to the max. Other colours within this scheme are soft sage / leaf green, muted pale blue and palma violet. The pairing of milky glass in soft pink, milk white and light grey is a sophisticated way to bring this look together and is perfect for spring. Timeless graceful grey will continue as a popular and practical neutral colour to apply, from soft furnishings to walls and woodwork. The warmth of Betta Living’s ivory high gloss style kitchen inspired from the Shaker period, combined with the floral folk style wall covering results in traditional crafting with a new fresh twist to modern living.

Watercolours (Artscape)

Hydrophobia (Aurora)

There is a new use of florals for 2015.

A huge trend forecast is the influence of classic watercolours and beautiful brushstrokes for new takes on florals and painting, but this artwork won’t be hung as masterpieces on walls; hand painted florals motifs and abstract designs will be applied to cushions, entire walls and window blinds. This look was present on the S/S 15 fashion catwalks and as digital printing techniques now allow beautiful brushstrokes and impressionistic fashion to be enjoyed on such a wide choice of surfaces, it will be translated in a variety of ways in our 2015 room schemes. Colours merge in almost childlike ways and vary from fresh and bright to bold and dramatic.

<

>

The top trends to look out for in 2015 include:

Also taking a cue from nature is the new exciting Hydrophobia trend, mimicking the effect when oil hits water and the amazing patterns and colours that occur. These waterborne effects will enter our homes in the form of wall tiles, lights, fabric designs and vases. This is quite a fresh, feminine look (heavily featured on S/S catwalks) and ideal for modern homes and styling – especially when mixed with whites, milky glass, mirrors and hazy plastics.

China In Your Hands

Graphicista

Classic blue and white bone china has been a mainstay in UK homes for decades adorning mansions to country cottages alike. It’s being revived for 2015 as the classic combo of blue and white is interpreted across wallpapers, bedding and lamp shades. Designs range from traditional chinese patterns and bold blooms to geometrics and cool circles. Think colbalt blues and denims, associated with vintage crockery and antique dinnerware, for this look.

THE ART OF DESIGN issue 13 St Ives, January. Occupying a grand Victorian building in the heart of London, Corinthia Hotel London is a bastion of style that offers the very finest in 21st century living. Reputed to be one of London’s earliest hotels dating from 1885, an extensive refurbishment has breathed new life into the historic building and equipped all 294 rooms, suites and penthouses to offer the highest standards of modern luxury. The hotel bathrooms are elegantly designed and include baths made from exclusive 3.5mm steel enamel from German specialist Kaldewei. 133 of the Executive Rooms, Superior rooms and Suites feature the Centro Duo bath with its classic four-cornered design and comfortable, double-ended interior. Marble clad walls and bespoke vanity units and bath panelling in warm timber give the room a luxurious feel, while the generous 180 x 80cm Centro Duo bath is made even more inviting thanks to the built-in LED TV.

42

Kaldewei offers 5 star bathing at the Corinthia Hotel London Centro Duo and Ellipso Duo Oval baths provide a luxurious experience and a sound investment at the Corinthia Hotel London and adjoining high-end appartments

Part of the Maltese-owned global IHI Group, internet review websites are abundant with praise for the London hotel’s facilities and its first class service. The ground floor offers a wealth of dining options including elegant British cuisine at The Northall, modern Italian at the Massimo Restaurant & Oyster Bar, drinks at The Basoon Bar and afternoon tea or evening cocktails in the spacious Lobby Lounge. ESPA Life was voted ‘Best UK Hotel Spa’ by the readers of Condé Nast Traveller; it spans four floors and in addition to extensive spa facilities also offers a gym, indoor swimming pool, vitality pool, nail studio, hair salon and sleep pods. All Kaldewei baths, shower trays and enamelled shower surfaces are made of high-quality steel enamel 3.5mm. This material is so robust that it shows no signs of wear even after many years of use. Along with exceptional hygienic properties, Kaldewei steel enamel also excels in other areas including quick and easy cleaning making chemical detergents unnecessary – a major advantage for housekeeping and the budget. Moreover the products are guaranteed for 30 years making them a sound, long-term investment. But the Kaldewei baths in the Corinthia Hotel London have another special feature in the form of anti-slip enamelling. This structured surface is made from a combination of quartz and sand which is burnt firmly into the steel, so the discreet anti-slip enamelling offers maximum safety underfoot no matter how much the bath is used. Adjoining the Corinthia Hotel London, IHI and its partners developed 12 high-end ambassadorial residences in a stand-alone landmark property. These all feature the premium Ellipso Duo Oval bath from Kaldewei. Distinguished by its sophisticated, flowing shape the bath’s soft elliptical interior promises comfort as well as luxury that befits these unique properties. Two 2-bedroom units, five 3- bedroom units and four 4-bedroom units, as well as the iconic penthouse with wrap-round terraces and panoramic views of London all have direct access to the hotel and its spa.

GABBERTAS STUDIO

45

Mark Gabbertas - Founder

>

Over the last decade, The Gabbertas Studio has been quietly establishing itself as one of the leading design studios around, and using the time to hone the design principles that define the practice’s approach and particularly an intuitive belief that the objective is to create character through simplicity. The designs are rooted in the conviction that furniture has the ability to influence how people behave, perform, interact and most importantly, feel, and that in a modest way, good design has the ability to improve the quality of life; to an extent our lives are fashioned by the objects with which we surround ourselves. Mark Gabbertas founded the Gabbertas Studio in 2002 following valuable years training as a cabinet maker and working as a designermaker. His lack of formal design training has proved no obstacle to him becoming one of the UK’s most sought after talents, and his emergence as an unofficial ‘paterfamilias’ of contemporary furniture design. The studio has received an extraordinary number of awards, including two Red Dots, 11 Design Guild Marks, and the Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design; these for its work for leading international brands including Allermuir, Boss, Chorus, Gloster, Leland, Oasiq, and Oiside.

> The remit to create character through simplicity belies the complexity of engineering and manufacturing techniques needed to achieve this. Each of the studio’s designs is a highly attuned reflection of Mark Gabbertas’ personality and exacting vision. There is a concision to his design approach that is the result of an exhaustive exploration of the visual and functional potential of a design, and the rigorous reworking of ideas until the right balance of the new and the timeless emerges. It is easy to shock, but much more difficult to please. And appreciating the value of elegance plays a significant role in achieving this. Irrepressible and even modest, Gabbertas’ commitment to his role and vision is well known and he pushes back as much as necessary to ensure the integrity of a design is not compromised. This devotion comes from his wider appreciation of what might be right for a brand as well the commercial realities that surround the whole process. With more designers now becoming brands in their own right and the lines even more blurred between industrial and domestic design, the value of the seasoned designer has perhaps never been greater.

Camellia Interiors The Singapore-based owners had purchased the five bedroom property as a UK base, with plans to use it for family holidays plus let it as an exclusive holiday home to capitalise on their investment.

57

The owners brief was to embrace the views and St Ives’ artistic heritage, the integrity of the properties character and proportions, while maximising space to create contemporary and luxurious interiors. The renovation was to be project managed by Camellia within tight constraints on both budget and deadlines.

THE STORY Knowing the team’s specialism in coastal architecture, design and interiors, they approached Camellia for their management across the whole rebuild and refurb of the house – citing the uniqueness of the area and the diverse colour palette as their main inspiration. The main requirement architecturally was to create a relaxing yet practical environment for holidays. However, the owners were also looking for a flexible internal accommodation option that would prove attractive as an exclusive holiday let.

Design Director of Camellia Interiors, Elaine Skinner, says, “This St Ives property was a major challenge structurally and logistically, although this is just the type of test that the Camellia team rises to brilliantly. Alongside our Cornish builders, we obviously know the logistics of St Ives intimately so our project management team successfully planned to overcome the parking and access restraints of narrow streets. The interiors style had to be fun yet formal – embracing the integrity of the property’s character and proportions, without compromising contemporary living requirements.”

> The unexpected discovery of a basement and consequent review of structural work and budget was quickly capitalised on by Camellias’ design team. This extra floor now houses an eye-catching media room and office with cinema-like lighting. This was installed in the staircase leading down and a contemporary feel was created with a large bespoke sofa and neutral-coloured, geometric wallpaper – showcasing the innovative smart lighting. Controlled using a smart phone device, this system can produce an instant atmospheric change, with the memories of builders digging out the basement and carrying it off site by hand in bags, long forgotten. With the clients working and living in a different time zone, all work was scheduled in advance and progress communicated with the clients via email, Skype and conference calls. On the front terrace, lime stone was used in a grey textured finish to complement the Cornish outdoor life style. In the rear yard handy wet suit drying-racks hang ready for use, whilst on the opposite side of the property a large dining table with integral fire-pit now offers a perfect view of the town’s harbour and surrounding coastline. From an interiors perspective the client was fully appreciative of the town’s charms and therefore briefed the Camellia team to imbue their new home with flourishes of the artistic heritage, the fishing legacy and the mild sub-tropical climate. As a result, Camellia utilised the ‘iconic St Ives view’ juxtaposing it with modern art and key colours from the outlook. The Wow factor was added with black, acid yellow and white, accents of which are repeated throughout the house on artwork, an intentional mix of furniture, and luxurious furnishings – all supplied by Camellia with handpicked accessories from their own range. The fusion of classic, eclectic and luxury coastal elements within a Victorian structure now reflects the evolution of the property from its fishing village roots to a contemporary holiday getaway.

AWARDS The project was shortlisted in three separate categories of the prestigious International Design and Architecture Awards 2014 competition and Elaine Skinner says, “As the only Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and one of the only British Institute of Interior Design qualified and accredited practices in Cornwall, we are continually driven by the need to create and deliver exacting industry standards. Entering awards is an exciting way to raise the profile of these standards whilst inspiring us to continually strive for excellence. THE ART OF DESIGN issue 13 The moment they entered the room one look was enough, they could tell that it was love at first glance and that without doubt there was an instant attraction. Your design and build quality is often assessed by first impressions and what better way to set the right note than by your choice of interior door and door assemblies. Vicaima offers Housing designers, developers and contractors real scope to put their own stamp on things with imaginative options in quality veneered and laminated finishes. For specifiers keen to reflect the recent trend for stained Oak floors and kitchens, Vicaima have also developed an exciting selection of real Oak veneered doors with the added charm of staining to bring out the natural beauty of wood in new and less common hues, such as chocolate, hazel and grey, in addition to limed oak, wenge and walnut. The faces, which are available in either a textured or smooth finish, have been enhanced with a matt lacquered stain finish which requires no further treatment once fitted. Truly different, this range will add charm to both modern and traditional homes.

RPW Design RPW Design completes stylish re-design for Hotel Continental Oslo

Leading hospitality interior design practice RPW Design has completed a re-design of Hotel Continental Oslo, one of Norway’s most sought after five-star hotels. 64 Hotel Continental Oslo is Norway’s only member of the Leading Hotels of the World Group. The hotel is over 100 years old, first opening in 1900, and has been in the same family for over four generations. The refurbishment of the interiors comprises a sensitive re-design of the hotel’s public areas and 155 guestrooms, bringing the interiors into the 21st century whilst respecting the style of the historic property. As Jan Wilson, Managing Director of RPW, explains “Our design bridges the gap between the much valued historic, traditional architecture and the client aspiration for a clean, contemporary and very Scandinavian concept.” “The light palette of colours, textures and fabrics were all carefully selected to reflect this aspiration. The use of metallic, silver

and pearl tones gives the interiors the lightness so necessary in dark northern latitudes whilst also creating a sense of tranquility and warmth.” This concept has been continued through to the public areas with the addition of yellow and gold feature fabrics and wall finishes on a light pearl palette whose elements complement the stylish grandeur of the building. RPW’s design also makes use of the Continental’s existing collection of antique furniture and art that has been acquired through the generations of owners. “The hotel has been the venue of choice for important events in so many Norwegian lives since 1900 and we were keen to ensure that our design and choice of materials reflected the gravitas of the spaces and their use” adds Elizabeth

Lane, Director or Projects at RPW. “We wanted to reinforce the hotel’s prestige as a Nordic jewel with emphasis on luxury and individual finishing touches which would complement the existing quality of this 5-star property. The elegance that is lacking in so much contemporary design was the key objective from start to finish.” Elisabeth Brochmann, Managing Director and Proprietor of Hotel Continental Oslo, comments; “Our collaboration with RPW was highly successful. We wanted a modern design which respected the style of our 114 year old house and Jan Wilson and our RPW team had a remarkable understanding of that assignment. RPW also managed the difficult task of combining great design with functional solutions”

65 “The feedback from our guests shows that together with RPW, we have accomplished this.” The hotel’s new interiors were showcased at an official opening event on Tuesday 7th October, where guests joined together at the five-star location to celebrate and admire the hotel’s stylish makeover.

This luxurious residential complex consists of two towers (North and South Tower) of 37 stories each, 260 apartments ranging in sizes, a health club, a spa of 11,000 square meters, a private beach, swimming pool and tropically landscaped grounds. The entryway is framed by a 2-story waterfall, which evokes elegance and ushers you into an exclusive world of absolute well-being. Among the other services offered to owners: gourmet restaurant, cigar room, concierge, finely furnished lounges, beach services, valet and butler.

In this exclusive environment of luxury and refinement, the uniqueness of Margraf marbles, a symbol of genuine Italian excellence in the world, plays a leading role, enhancing the interiors of the complex: from the entrance, through the common areas, to the apartments. In the lobbies of each tower, Margraf's skilled "masters" have created a unique floor decorated with rosettes that brings out the classic soul of a cutting-edge building project. The hallways and common areas feature 2,000 square meters of Breccia Paradiso, Arabella Beige, Nero Marquinia, Monaco Light, Dark Emperador and Giallo Reale marble. In the apartments, Fior di Pesco Carnico, a marble with shades spanning from grey, to pink, to white, with streaks

of ivory, and a coarse grain, extracted exclusively for Margraf in Forni Avoltri (UD), the only quarry in the world where it is found, covers the walls, ceiling, shower and countertop of the master bathroom. The guest bathrooms are an explosion of French Vanilla, a marble with a homogeneous beige colour, cut for this project into 1-cm-thick modular tiles. The uniqueness of its marbles and a world class technical consultancy service makes Margraf a key partner for architects and designers in bringing to life their luxury creations all over the world.

Food for Thought

Three A+ Student Mensas by JOI-Design Interior architecture studio JOI-Design, primarily known for its hotel work, has applied its hospitality expertise to the university setting for the creation of three stylish mensas, as student cafĂŠs are often called in central Europe. The concepts recognise that in addition to providing healthy meals, dining halls are places where pupils relax with friends, discuss coursework or revise for exams and therefore the atmosphere plays an important role in nourishing their mindsets and openness to learning. Humboldt University, Berlin At Humboldt University’s listed Cum Laude restaurant, an early 20th century workshop converted to a refectory in 1945, JOI-Design’s contemporary renovation uses luxurious, residential touches to create a sophisticated cosiness that comforts students away from home. Within 280 sqm are four distinct environments - the bar, restaurant, fireplace lounge and chef’s table - that seat a total of 125 students, faculty and members of the community in a range of atmospheres that bridge tradition with modernity. At the long marble bar counter and adjacent high tables, leather and timber stools and banquettes accommodate those with time to grab a quick bite between classes as well as patrons who wish to linger. As a nod to traditional cafés where it is a time-honoured pleasure to savour a hot coffee while perusing and debating the daily news, a brass rail to hold newspapers has been installed below an art installation with phrases in three-dimensional typeset that describe university life. Adjustable reading lights mounted on the subtly striped walls offer practicality and classic style.

>

During the day in the restaurant, the tables are used by those ordering form the cafeteria counter, while at night they are used for à la carte dining serviced by waiters. Marble banquette frames, soft velvet seating in azure and citrus tones, creamy leather wingback chairs studded with nail heads, and quintessential Thonet-style café chairs made from steam-bent timber and tightly woven wicker translate the building’s historic roots into a modern form. Black and white photos depict student culture and academic subjects studied at the school, and as a bit of “intellectual humour”, dark timber shelves hold books whose spines face inwards so that their titles cannot be read. In the fireplace lounge, light oak floors laid in a herringbone pattern and a flickering hearth housed within a sleek, veined marble mantle instils the ambience of a well-appointed living room. Retroinspired polished brass wall sconces and chandeliers hung from lofty, double-height ceilings highlight the clean contrast of the cool white joinery against the walls’ deep saturated tones of petrol blue and mossy olive, enlivened by splashes of turquoise and lime.

THE ART OF DESIGN issue 13 Beuth University of Applied Sciences, Berlin With its location in the heart of Berlin, Beuth University of Applied Sciences is a hive of activity and required a canteen that would embrace this energetic spirit while bringing fun and relaxation. JOI- Design’s solution for this two-storey cafeteria’s renovation has transformed it into an open and social hub for not only those associated with the school but for city workers as well. Expansive glazing at the ground floor level allows the main dining space to be flooded with natural light and soothes stressed-out scholars with a calming vista of greenery. Seating options to accommodate 850 diners are intentionally mixed to suit a range of needs and encourage an informal cosiness within the vast space, 850 sqm at the lower level and 114 sqm in the upstairs gallery. Fitted with vivid yellow task lights, white, scallop-edged communal tables are tech-enabled so that busy students can multitask while eating. Large square tables and benches in honey timber tones are ideal for large groups, while round tables and upholstered banquettes with built-in power outlets are better suited for more intimate meetings.

70

Zooming racetracks of suspended ceiling lights and splashes of red that encase ventilation ducts amplify the familial and imaginative vibe created by illustrator Felix Scheinberger 30 metres long x 3 metres high hand-painted cartoon mural depicting the haphazard charm of the décor in shared student housing. The canteen’s eclectic mix of furnishings mirrors this concept, with vintage-patterned ceramic floor tiles, seamless metal barstools and chairs, a Chesterfield sofa and Eames-style moulded plywood seats injecting touches of retro-chic that subliminally recall the comforts of home.

Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences for Social Work and Social Pedagogy, Berlin The yearning for individuality amidst a sea of conformity shaped the concept for JOI-Design’s renovation of the 300 sqm canteen at the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences for Social Work and Social Pedagogy. Located next to one of East Berlin’s characteristic concrete housing estates built in a bygone era, the grey uniformity of the surroundings sits in contrast with these prefabricated homes’ balconies, brightly painted to express the personality of those who dwell inside. Inside the cafeteria, the backdrop follows suit with crisp white walls offset by those in a warm graphite hue, and stylised “cafeteria trays” in a spectrum of greys for the artwork. Honey-toned oak tables and sculptural timber wall cladding at the service window uplift these shades with their suggestion of nature. Retro-inspired swing-arm lamps, white globes hung from the ceiling and typical “schoolhouse” pendant lights not only augment the natural

Issue 13 - 2015

illumination filtering through the skylight above the central stairwell, they add a touch of comforting nostalgia within the “factory manufactured” surroundings of the estate. Dazzling light bulbs spell out the word “essen”, which translates to “eat” and “food” in German, to draw diners’ attention towards the service counter. Helping to break-up the space is a floor-to-ceiling divider made from white slats joined by a timber crosspiece and which display the school’s name in red handwriting. Mixed seating to accommodate 135 students encourage a laidback atmosphere in which they can relax: vintage-style steel barstools mingle with splashes of red and yellow in the chair frames and upholstery, injecting liveliness in a fashion similar to the painted balconies of the estate. Wallcovering, as well as laminate on the coffee tables, depicts rowupon-row of apartment balconies in a miniature scale, a quirky charm that illustrates the fundamental quest of human beings for individuality.

Sustainability Made Beautiful by Barbara Fischer-Clark, Stommel Haus UK What is Sustainability? A lot of people these days speak about Sustainability and to have sustainable development is the target of almost every planning policy throughout the UK these days. But what does Sustainability mean exactly? Sustainable architecture is defined as “architecture that seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space. There could be no better way to fulfil this requirement than by building with sustainable materials such as timber responsibly sourced in certified forests, by using recycled materials such as paper and glass and by applying these materials in such a way to create energy efficient building with longevity. Sustainable Building Materials Wood is probably the most ecological and sustainable and a truly renewable building material. Its sustainability is unsurpassed: Timber is grown quicker than it is used by most of the main timber supplying countries which have long-standing policies to re-grow more timber than is felled. Since the 1992 environment symposium in Rio de Janeiro, international standards for forestry and timber trading such as PEFC and FSC have been introduced and are adhered to by suppliers delivering to the premium timber house manufacturers. Premium manufacturers of timber houses use constructive wood protection and apply timber devoid of any chemical treatment adhering to the extensive standards and guidelines for non-toxic wood protection and timber construction. Timber has unique properties: It is diffusible and hygroscopic; it filters the air and thus provides a fresh and healthy atmosphere in a building. It has antibacterial and humidity regulating properties which have positive effects on the atmospheric conditions of a room. Timber smells good, looks good and feels good and thus has a positive effect on our wellbeing. Timber positively affects all human senses.

Energy efficiency Not only is timber a very sustainable and ecological material, it allows to construct very energy efficient homes. It needs 100 cm concrete to compare with the energy efficiency of only 6.5 cm of spruce wood! A bespoke Stommel house is built primarily of polar spruce heartwood from FSC certified forests in Northern Finland, about 50 to 60 tons of this wood is used in a medium size house. With recycled glass and recycled newspaper for insulation, the latest energy rating of a Stommel house built in Surrey showed the best ever energy rating the London based energy assessors ever calculated.

But there is of course more to a house than rationality The contemporary designs of modern timber houses demonstrate the dreams and visions of home owners, the creativity of architects and the capability of premium manufacturers such as Stommel Haus. Modern timber houses have high ceilings, lots of glass, open plan living areas and are fitted with the latest heating and home automation technology. The combination of traditional craftsmanship, the vast experience in timber construction and contemporary fabrication methods allow premium manufacturers such as Stommel Haus to provide their clients with beautiful and comfortable homes where they can enjoy a comfortable living space at low energy cost.

GROSVENOR CRESCENT MEWS

78

> Since the Duke of Westminster had 21 Grosvenor Crescent Mews constructed in 1878, Britain's political and business elite and members of the aristocracy have been associated with this charming mews house. No doubt they would find the recently updated and enlarged version of their house to be a vast improvement on the property they left. The 4 floors of luxurious high specification living space would leave the former tenants bemused by the scale and ambition of this “state of the art, secluded mews house in the heart of Belgravia. Some of the former lease holders of 21 Grosvenor Crescent Mews include W.F Danver Smith Viscount Hambledon, M.P., he used Number 21 to store his cars while he managed the W.H.Smith chain of shops founded by his grandfather or attended to his duties in parliament as conservative MP for the Strand constituency.

Field Marshall Sir Philip Chetwode the 7th baronet of Oakley was a tenant of the property from 1940 - 1945 during this time he was the Constable of the Tower of London, at state occasions he was responsible for the Crown Jewels and other regalia, his daughter married the world renowned Poet Laureate John Betjeman, he is still highly regarded in India as a founder of the Indian Military Academy. Henry George Charles Earl of Harewood leased the property from 1934 - 1940. He used the property to store his fleet of motor cars on the ground floor and his servants above while he was away from his estate in North Yorkshire, Goldsborough Hall. The Earl of Harewood married the only daughter of King George V, Princess Mary, she would certainly have approved of the current standard of accommodation offered by 21 Grosvenor Crescent Mews.

THE BRIEF

>

The brief was to transform a large 6 bedroom, 1930’s cottage and its recent extensions into an elegant, luxurious, contemporary family home. I was delighted with the challenge!

We wanted to honour the original architecture of the house but also integrate the newer, modern extensions, so that it all worked well together. In addition the owners had built up a mixture of architectural and furniture styles over the years and largely painted the house off-white, being nervous of colour. My challenge was to inject some character, and make old and new work in harmony. Our aim - modern classic meets contemporary wow!

LIVING THE RESULTS

>

“Contemporary living” was the objective in the large open plan extension housing the kitchen/ dining area. Strong architectural lines are used throughout, for the window frames and kitchen units. However, we softened this with wooden accents such as the Scandia chairs, interesting textiles and artwork to prevent it from feeling too industrial. There is a colourful home office within the kitchen area… using the owner’s bright artwork and the recently introduced Vienna Chair from Tom Faulkner. We updated the hall with some similarly strong architectural pieces leading into the contemporary extension.

91

In the formal sitting room, traditional and more contemporary pieces work side-by-side. The family grandfather clock is complemented by modern styled upholstery from The Sofa and Chair Company to give the room a timeless yet modern feel.

Upstairs, these stunning lamps make a statement in the master bedroom. We mixed a colonial style dressing table with some modern classics, such as the Barcelona chair, and again used interesting artwork and textiles to make the large room feel elegant yet welcoming. The lamps are from Tyson in Battersea, the dressing table from Mufti in Notting Hill and many of the textiles from Zimmer and Rohde and Margo Selby. The artwork over the bed was an original photo the owners had taken on holiday in Tobago Cays and the Charlie Waite Avenue of Trees Triptych reflects their love of nature. In the guest room this print by artist Jessica Zoob A Time to Rest became the focal point and inspired the colours for the new lamps, accessories and soft furnishings. Last, but not least, we also gave the garden a make-over, having fun with these bright contemporary chairs from Indian Ocean and the teak and stainless steel range from Barlow Tyrie.

Celia Sawyer Celia Sawyer is the Founder of exclusive Knightsbridge interior design company Celia Sawyer Luxury Interiors, which boasts a portfolio across the globe. As a dealer both on and off the big screen, Celia collects art and collectables and has an extensive client base for which she sources rare and beautiful objects, buying and selling for world renowned sporting personalities, celebrities and entrepreneurs, to some of the most influential development companies in the world.

>

Further to her successful interior design business, Celia Sawyer first appeared on our screens as one of the best known stars of Channel 4’s prime-time series ‘Four Rooms’. It was this programme, now in its fourth series, which propelled Celia into the limelight and television arena. As one of the all-star dealers on Four Rooms Celia bids and negotiates for the best possible price for the treasures on offer. It is her straighttalking, feisty manner and impeccable style that has helped Celia to become the go-to expert on this cult television show.

It is her steely determination that won her the role on the award-winning show. Celia reveals how she saw a Channel 4 advert asking viewers to send in snaps of their vintage treasures that could appear on the programme. Instead of putting forward an intriguing object, Celia advertised herself as a curious collectible and emailed her own photo to producers. Following on from the success of Four Rooms, Celia was selected by the BBC to host a new factual primetime, entertainment show for BBC one, titled Your Home in Their Hands, which debuted in September 2014. This programme sees amateur designers take over people’s homes across the UK for a make-over, often with a twist. The show has received in excess of 3 million viewers a week and will continue to build in audience and notoriety over the coming months.

102

With a growing fan base Celia continues to juggle the dynamic world of television and her own successful interior design business. As a self-made multimillionaire businesswoman Celia is inundated with mail from people from all walks of life, giving advice on everything from growing or starting a business to how to keep in shape. Her passion is to find ways to help inspire individuals and businesses to achieve their ultimate goals, as she is a prime example that

you can turn your dreams into a reality, having left school at 15 with few qualifications Celia has always relied on her unflinching self-belief. It is this drive and belief that helped Celia seize every opportunity, first working as a dental nurse then creating her first business as a photographer’s agent; representing photographers she had worked with in the modeling world and helping find them work on lucrative campaigns for advertising agencies, including Saatchi & Saatchi. Celia’s eye soon turned to interior design after entering the property game, buying, renovating then selling on for profit. It was from here that Celia’s creative and savvy style for interiors came to life. After being asked to work on a plethora of contacts houses she was then invited to work on a famous footballer’s residence after a winning pitch. Since then, Celia has never looked back and over the last decade has built up a hugely successful luxury interior design company, not only decorating clients' homes, hotels and bars but also buying pieces which will fit into their growing private collections. Celia Sawyer Luxury Interiors boasts a portfolio across the world, from luxury mansions, penthouses, beach villas, aviation and show homes.

Celia is frequently in mainstream press, alongside being a columnist for the MailOnline and Hello! Magazine. Celia’s personal style has also garnered attention, with her show-stopping outfits; she is seen to be a style icon and will soon be launching a jewellery collection. Away from the world of business Celia is a mother of two who enjoys family life and keeping fit – something incredibly important to Celia. Charity also plays a significant role in Celia’s life being an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust and the face of the British Heart Foundation furniture and electrical stores, where she is a committee member for the charity’s prestigious Tunnel of Love event. Furthermore Celia supports Help for Heroes, Dorset Air Ambulance, Variety Leonard Cheshire Disability, Well Child, Make a Wish, RNLI Life Boats and Great Ormond Street Hospital. To celebrate Celia’s business acumen and charity work, Celia won the Inspiration Award for Women in 2013, which raises money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Four Rooms won a highly prestigious Royal Television Society award in 2014.

BRIO BRINGS FLEXIBLE SPACE AND STYLE TO A LONDON APARTMENT

Brio, the leading manufacturer of interior and exterior folding door and window architectural solutions has provided architects CGT Works with the solution for opening up a Georgian interior in a flexible manner. A recent project for the company involved converting a two bed flat in a Georgian terrace in London’s Earls Court into a more flexible living space. It involved knocking down the wall between the living room and the second bedroom to open up the space and let in more light. “The new Zero Clearance option has already proved popular with architects and specifiers as only 3mm clearance is required between the top of the door and the track. The track can be installed into the ceiling so the door looks as though it is floating as the hangers are difficult if not impossible to see. It is a very aesthetically pleasing effect,” says David Newton, General Manager at Brio UK. For more details on the BRIO product range visit www.briouk.com

The Truth about sun tunnels Choose a sun tunnel with a roof dome made from quality Bohemia crystal glass. If you have a crystal glass dome on your roof, you have the guarantee of decades of durability and no discolouring of the dome. Compared to domes manufactured from plastic materials, a glass dome is self washable and no air pollution will stick to the surface of the glass. Furthermore, there is no change in the glass material’s structure and it‘s unaffected by dust abrasion in the atmosphere in windy conditions. Over just a few months one can really see significant changes with a typical plastic dome, whereby a barrier is created that

hinders translucency - i.e. good transmission of daylight. And, given that we are fighting for every small inch of daylight it really helps to have a dome that has high translucency. A glass dome can also be washed with detergents after twenty years of use and there will be no damage after washing. But here one needs to ask some basic questions. For example: Why are windows not made from plastic? Why are they made from glass? Have you seen plastic materials used with such domes 2-3 years after being installed and how did it appear? www.lightwaydaylight.co.uk

Cornish Chair Company serving up a treat with lobster pot creation A clawed ocean crustacean most commonly associated with the dinner plate might sound like an unlikely source of inspiration for a unique new piece of furniture design. The vision of a lobster - in its humble seaside pot – has been the vital ingredient behind the creation of The Lobster Pot Chair. The idea comes from the Creative Director of the Cornish Chair Company, Richard Hooper, who has previously exhibited collaborative projects at the London Design Week and worked on a variety of commissions for the National Trust. The Truro based company’s 25-legged chair, made from kiln dried American black walnut, represents an innovative approach to furniture design and aims not to merely occupy a position and cubic capacity within a space, but also to interact with and make a wider impact upon that space. Are you sitting comfortably? The story SOFA ! I made enquiries to try and get a frame maker to manufacture, even taking it to frame maker in London but without any luck . The chaise longue that was borne out of inspiration and innovation, the perfect fusion between old and new, antique and modern, which originated in the 16th century and incidentally is French for long chair. Coincidentally, this ground breaking design is named ‘Capelle’, part of Derek’s surname and Isabelle’s first name, hence Capelle was born. Unfortunately, in 1995, production came to a sudden halt. Only 3 were ever made due to the fact that we could not source another manufacturer, especially one who would be prepared to make one offs. After an 18 year gap we have at last found a company who fits the bill and has just delivered their prototype chaise to our craft workshop based in Portswood . Capelle is aimed at the more discerning clients who are looking for something that is different, something that makes a statement and something to cherish, for years to come. Isabelle Moore, an art and furniture design student, contacted Derek Caplen F.A.M.U. (Fellow of the Association Of Master Upholsterers) of Southampton based Dee Cee Upholstery and Interiors back in 1995 with the idea of getting made an ultra modern chaise longue design concept produced. Dee Cee Upholstery was established in 1978 by Derek who served an apprenticeship and gained his City and Guilds 555 in modern and traditional upholstery. Although Derek left school with few qualifications he had drive, passion and enthusiasm to follow in his dad’s footsteps who was a craftsman cabinet maker and joiner. His dad, Arthur, taught his son to pay attention to detail and to always try to strive for perfection.

120

When Derek was elected to the A.M.U.&.S.F. (Association of master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishings) he was pleased to learn that at the tender age of 22, he was to become the youngest member in the country and naturally went on to become the youngest fellow of the A.M.U.&.S.F. Aged 43 he also served on the board of directors for 10 years. Back in 1998 Derek’s flair for design and a business opportunity saw him produce the “Dream Team “ range of chairs upholstered with your own teams real football shirts tailored on to the chair backs , but then that’s another story. On a light hearted note, Derek is the countries only master upholsterer to have appeared on Page 3 of the Sun newspaper on 13.11.1998, albeit reporting on the unique Dream Team range of designer chairs dressed in and upholstered using real football shirts. Derek’s award winning upholstery designs have won recognition in the trade press and from fellow master upholsterers in the industry he fell in love with. It was when Isabelle was introduced to us by former A.M.U.&.S.F. President Graham Carpenter F.A.M.U. they turned up at our craft workshop for our initial meeting . She amazed us with this full size chaise longue, the contoured lines and shape sculpted out of polystyrene never seen before , Isabelle then went on to explain that she couldn’t get anybody to upholster or, for that matter, make the frame in the required shape and style (we were not surprised). After examining the chaise in detail Derek accepted the commission on the understanding that he had full control in the way he designed the upholstery to fit such an unusual style and shape. We then paid a visit to our local frame maker John Williams who is usually, like me, is up for a challenge. John spent some time inspecting the shape, which looked like something from outer space and we both agreed it would be a real challenge. Some weeks later John rang. The good news was that it was ready for collection, the bad news was that it was at that time not commercially viable to produce. John had made one pair for Isabelle and two master copies for us.

The Capelle contemporary chaise longue is as comfortable as it looks and supports you in all the right places but Capella is much more than that, it really is a work of art. Each one individually hand crafted using the best of modern and traditional upholstery skills passed down through generations of master upholsterers. In fact Capella is the epitome of design, style and ultimate comfort, each one as individual as you are. Available in the fabric or leather of your choice, you can be sure of its longevity. Capelle’s main sub frame is produced using traditional, seasoned beech and the latest modern laminates, the perfect solution for the job. Capella is then painstakingly and carefully upholstered using deep fluted polyester padding to produce the soft, sumptuous quilting that makes this ultra modern chaise longue so appealing and takes your comfort to another level. Capelle is available as a left or right handed chaise. Obviously such a work of art and our commitment to quality doesn’t come cheap, but then quality never does, but who knows Capelle may become the antique of the future , in fact years to come, a classic of its time. As time evolves we have plans to work on a prototype double ended (mirror image) chaise, together with a glass topped and upholstered coffee table in a similar style to compliment the Capelle chaise longue. Derek’s partner in Dee Cee Upholstery and Interiors, Karen Caplen, said “I am very much looking forward to welcoming clients to our showroom to discuss their requirements. Whilst Capella’s unique design will not appeal to everybody, it certainly has the wow factor, a certain je ne sais quoi with its unique shape and style almost from the Art Deco era”.

BUILDING A REPUTATION FOR EXCELLENCE, PIECE BY PIECE Tucked away in a quiet corner of south-east London one British artist has been slowly creating something of a storm in the world of site specific art installations. London born mosaic artist Gary Drostle carefully cuts marble, Venetian Glass, and tough porcelain using a simple traditional hammer and hand nippers. Each shaped piece placed by hand to create completely unique and breathtaking floors and walls. These bespoke works represent a coming together of the ancient tradition of mosaic making, with its heritage of Roman and Byzantine craftsmanship, with the excitement and creatively of contemporary London design. Like his work, gradually building piece by piece, Gary’s reputation as an international figure in the mosaic world has been built on over twenty five years of dedicated work. His work can be seen in parks, town centres, public and private buildings across the UK and in the USA, Canada and South America. 122

As he stands in his studio cutting small porcelain coloured shards for his latest commission in California Gary’s quiet and modest manner belies the pile of international awards he has gained over recent years including the National Tile Contractors Association of America’s Award for Mosaic in 2011 for his 50 foot long ‘River of Life’ mosaic floor for The University of Iowa and top awards from the US based ‘Mosaic Arts International’ including ‘Best in Show’ in Seattle 2013 for his ‘Entwined Histories’ mosaic sculpture in London and the ‘Award for Contemporary Innovation in Mosaics’ in Houston in 2014 for a mosaic in Venetian Glass ‘Electron Flow’ which features an lighting strip also in London. Gary takes a commission from initial design, through fabrication in the studio, to installation on site, all with the same attention to detail. Talking about his work Gary says “mosaic art is a unique architectural art, it can bring colour, texture, pat- tern and meaning to walls and floors in a way which is both beautiful and permanent. I find work- ing in this medium a continual inspiration. To find out more contact Gary at his studio on www.drostle.com E: gary@drostle.com T: +44 (0)771 952 9520

SEE WOOD DESIGN IN A NEW LIGHT 124

A revolutionary new wood material that offers extraordinary design possibilities is now available through James Latham. Luminoso are wood panels that transmit light, allowing designers to create visually stunning effects that are exceptionally unique. The transparent wood effect is achieved with fibre optics that allow natural or artificial light to be transmitted. When the panel is unlit it appears to be a solid piece of wood as the fibre optics are only visible upon very close inspection but once illuminated, all kinds of impactful and eye-catching effects can be achieved. Customised designs, logos and images can be incorporated and even ‘movable’ images, such as programmable messages can be transmitted. Paul Latham, Sales & Product Development Director for James Latham said, “Luminoso really does have the ‘Wow factor’ and is unlike anything else available in the market. It’s the ultimate in creating a luxury interior space and I can see all kinds of applications for it, hotels, bars, restaurants, high-end shop fitting,

yachts, private jets, exhibition stands, directional signage, the list is endless.” Using species such as Oak, Maple, Walnut, Cherry and Sapele, Luminoso is a patented material that is made by embedding fibre optics between layers of wood with high strength adhesives. No holes are created to achieve the effect. It can be finished with lacquer, oil or stain to match the tone or finish of any other design element and it can be milled, cut and sanded. Luminoso is available in panel sizes of 3000mm x 500mm, 3000mm x 1000mm and 3000mm x 1250mm and in thicknesses of 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 16mm, 18mm and 20mm. BRIO BRINGS FLEXIBLE SPACE AND STYLE TO A LONDON APARTMENT

Brio, the leading manufacturer of interior and exterior folding door and window architectural solutions has provided architects CGT Works with the solution for opening up a Georgian interior in a flexible manner.

we needed were there and easily accessible plus technical drawings. I also spoke to Brio HQ about some details and the technical department was very good and obviously experienced.”

CGT Works describes itself as an architectural and construction service company operating in London and Italy with over 10 years' experience specialising in residential buildings and retail premises looking for budget or high-level design solutions.

Because these floor to ceiling door projects can present their own challenges when it comes to sliding door hardware, Brio has designed and manufactured its Single Run top hung system with a Zero Clearance option.

“We are a team of architects and specialised professionals that enjoys the challenge of designing and constructing innovative buildings and interiors alongside more traditional projects,” says CGT Works director and project manager Enrico Trolese.

The Zero Clearance option, available across Brio’s Single Run 80 – Single Run 250 product portfolio, successfully achieves the modern minimalist look with hardware that is discreetly hidden from view.

A recent project for the company involved converting a two bed flat in a Georgian terrace in London’s Earls Court into a more flexible living space. It involved knocking down the wall between the living room and the second bedroom to open up the space and let in more light. The owner still wanted the option of closing it off so the decision was made to install custom 3.4m x 8m panel doors – three sliding and one pivoting. The doors were made by a local joiner and installed using Brio’s top hanging Single Run Zero Clearance hardware system.

Single Run Zero Clearance hardware allows minimal gaps between the door panel and hardware, offering a pleasing aesthetic finish to floor to ceiling installations. With no hanger plates or screws protruding above the top edge of the door, Single Run Zero Clearance has been designed to achieve clearances of 3mm between the track and the top of the door. To go with the discreet top, the new spring loaded guide and bottom rail can also be concealed within the bottom edge of the door thereby extending Zero Clearance to floor level.

According to Enrico: “Brio was the only manufacturer that provided kit that suited the requirements for such heavy doors – they weight 100 kilos a panel. You can see the tracks but they are very discreet, set into the ceiling and the floor. It has been so successful we are now using the system on another project in the same building”.

Enrico found Brio when researching the project online. “The Brio website is very good. All the details
