UNIQUE The eclectic penthouse is like stepping into a dream world fantasized by the young, and personifies the treasured memories of the old. It is a breath of fresh air, even on the nineteenth floor. The bazaar of designer blankets, vintage furniture, neon signs, accents of antique cartoon murals and even bear skin rugs, here all senses are nourished. There is everything, luxury, casual comfort, vibrant energy, fashion, and humor.

DESIGN The design surprisingly does not detract from the cityscape view. In fact, it only increases the feeling of being in an exclusive club or lounge, hidden from the rest of the world. The design by Maxime Jacquet was clearly created to make one feel completely unique and if you are a guest, you know this is a once in a lifetime experience, in a marvelous space for you to enjoy. You might as well be traveling in a time warp museum enjoying champagne and macaroons.

LAURA

HAMMET This two bedroom, two bathroom apartment located a stones throw from Harrods within the impressive residence 1 Hans Crescent in Knightsbridge has been designed by Laura Hammett. It was purchased by a Saudi Arabian private client who wanted a complete refurbishment and full “turn-key” furnishing within a tight deadline of three months. The existing design, although high spec was very elaborate and Middle Eastern in style and the clients brief was contemporary “Fendi Casa”. However the client’s two daughters would be living there while studying in London so the challenge for the Laura Hammett team was to bring together the Fendi style with a more feminine softness, particularly in the bedrooms while satisfying the clients more masculine style.

19

The apartment was stripped back to the brickwork and all architectural details such as skirting, cornice work, architraves and doors were replaced with Art Deco style features. client such as high gloss dark greyed oak kitchen bedrooms. All internal doors were designed by the Laura Hammett team and veneered in the same dark grey oak as the kitchen to give continuity throughout the property with stunning Beardmore Art Deco handles. Polished Carrera bring as much light into the property as possible along with a selection of textured wall coverings the entrance hall was an opportunity to bring in the richness and luxurious feel of Fendi Casa and as it’s a transitional space rather than a living space with no natural light Laura Hammett chose to emphasize this with verre eglomisé, a gilded 18 carat gold backed mirror wall from Stuart Fox and a statement console in high gloss ebony macassar with a polished brass base. They often take this approach to spaces with little natural light. Rather than challenging small dark spaces they prefer to go with it’s natural feel by using richer darker tones. This works very well in inner hallways like in this Hans Crescent project but also in WC’s and smaller guest bedrooms. WWW.THEARTOFDESIGNMAGAZINE.COM

ISSUE 09 - 2014 >

The open plan living and dining room had just one window at the end so lighting was extremely important. The chandeliers and wall lights by Tom Kirk are real feature pieces in both sides of the room, creating striking light effects on the walls, which add another layer of texture to the wall coverings. The furniture and styling in this space was Laura Hammett’s more classic feminine take on the Fendi style, using lots of high was a favorite of the clients so that was used on a large cabinet imported from Portugal. The wardrobes in the master bedroom are one of the most stunning elements of the whole project with a specialist silver poplar veneer and cracked gesso drawer fronts from bespoke surface specialists Water Guilders, framed with a polished nickel inlay. The bespoke room a completely different atmosphere from day to night. The bathrooms continue the same dark greyed oak veneer which is teamed with Calacatta marble with it’s dynamic veining. is from Vola, maintaining the streamline modern design from the rest of the apartment. The devil really is in the detail with Laura Hammett’s bathroom design, with a chrome inlay set into the shadow gap of the skirting, which continues around the door architrave. The team’s approach to bathroom design is that you should be completely unaware of the practical/ functional elements of the room, such as sinking the shower screen track into the marble so that only the glazing is seen and an almost invisible marble shower drain. The design team are heavily involved on site at every stage of the construction process ensuring that all details are being followed to the millimetre because something that might not be important to the contractor can often be one of the most important design details. Laura Hammett have been designing residential interiors for over six years now, predominantly in West London but this Hans Crescent project is one of year. The design practice run by Aaron and Laura Hammett has grown rapidly over the last year as their client base has quickly shifted from family homes in West and South West London to the top end of the luxury property market working with private clients and property developers in prime central London and abroad. Ongoing projects include a Belgravia mews house completing in June, which showcases the upcoming Laura Hammett furniture collection, and a 5 story Grade II listed Belgravia townhouse completing at the end of August. The design approach to both of these projects, for the same client Residence One, is very different because of the nature of the properties. The mews house has very little architectural client requires. This has been done throughout every room in the house including a tread, a basket weave mirror panelled wall behind it and a seven meter chandelier that

to that rather than compete. The team are working closely with Westminster Council’s conservation team on this project to ensure that all architectural features being replaced are historically correct for the Regency period of the house. The Laura Hammett aesthetic has evolved throughout the last year into a distinctive style with bronze, vellum, shagreen and embossed leathers. “If design is over complicated it doesn’t give you space to absorb the details, which to us is the most interesting aspect of architecture and furniture design”

MK ELECTRIC

‘NEW LUXURY’ DEMANDS MORE FROM INTERIOR DESIGNERS Can wiring accessories provide much-needed differentiation? By Jason ng, Marketing CoMMuniCations speCialist, Mk eleCtriC

Interior design has become a burgeoning industry as homeowners, employees and travellers have come to expect ever more chic and customised surroundings. In fact, Haskel and Pesole note that businesses in the United Kingdom are investing up to £35 billion a year on design.

>

Paired with the increase in homeowners, hoteliers and luxury apartment developers spending on interiors, is the growing trend to personalise and customise spaces. For example, a hotel which reflects the culture and style of its location through showcasing locally crafted furniture from nearby designers. Or the luxury apartment block with carefully curated shared spaces - gyms, foyers and hallways – that prides itself on locally sourced sculptures, paintings and drawings.

22

Designers are fast adopting the term ‘new luxury’, which requires that design and art create special feelings, experiences and memories for clients. This differs from ‘old luxury’ which focused on the products themselves, leveraging expensive brand names and high-end materials. What this shift means for the electrical accessories sector is that manufacturers must now create products that have the ability to respond, complement and enhance the overall look and feel of any given room. New ranges, such as MK Electric’s Elements Collection, offer designers the ability to do just that with wiring accessories that help to complement the look of a room through colours and textures. Designers can now take advantage of dimmers and sockets that can take on the appearance of stone, wood, hide or ceramics to complement or offer contrast to any room or space. Hand-in-hand with the designer’s quest to create something individual is the user’s expectation of the latest in technology, a demand experienced in both the luxury hotel and residential sectors. Specifiers are looking for functionality which is high-tech but also instinctive, such as touch technology for on-off switching and dimming functions.

PROJECT BRIEF Interior Design LOCATION UAE Company HBA London

HBA London Weaves Arabic Heritage with Luxurious Artistry at the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah

26

HBA London has crafted an interior design concept for the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah that immerses guests in an ambience woven from the ancient history, tradition and culture of the UAE. Envisioned as an escape from the windswept sand dunes to the tranquil waters of the Arabian Sea, the luminous spaces of the region’s first Waldorf Astoria evoke calm and serenity.

>

The lobby’s design and palette are derived from the centuries-old practice of pearl diving in the islands’ sparkling waters. Behind the reception desks, framed wall panels recall the colours of the sea; covered in turquoise silk, they have been meticulously hand-stitched with gold sequins in a flowing wave pattern. In the centre of the lobby lies the “pearl” of the hotel, an iconic clock based upon the ancient astrolabe which was used to discern the precise times for prayer in the Islamic faith. Over six metres tall and modelled after a compass, the timepiece has five rotating gilded rings around its base that show the exact minute of each prayer throughout the day. Three tonnes of metal, steel and champagne gold were used in making the clock, requiring goldsmiths to mill further quantities of champagne gold as the amount required exhausted the existing UK supply. Engraved in Arabic and English around its circumference is a cherished phrase extracted from a traditional Bedouin poem, “From your homeland travel abroad to find glory”. The pearlised glass dome on each of the clock’s four faces is decorated with gold plated hands which sweep around a turquoise centrepiece. As the largest of its kind in the world, the clock will be an attraction for visitors in its own right. > WWW.THEARTOFDESIGNMAGAZINE.COM

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 09 The lobby has bespoke artwork conjuring-up the underwater world of divers. British artist Ann Carrington has created four pieces expressly for the hotel, works made entirely from mother-ofpearl buttons that have been sewn in the pattern of fan coral onto taupe silk. Further along the ground copies of the Qur’an. Flowing from the lobby is Peacock Alley, a signature lounge found in all Waldorf Astoria hotels. Here, the design mixes local touches with contemporary style ring of banquettes encircle a tiered marble fountain and a spectacular chandelier with handcrafted glass elements suggests stylised peacock feathers. Intricate geometric paper sculptures formed from especially commissioned from artist Gill Wilson. At Camelia, soft shades of amethyst and green paint a fresh, contemporary twist on traditional Middle Eastern tea and shisha lounges. Designed to be a luminous and spacious place especially attractive for women to comfortably relax, its delicate, feminine style has been modelled after dainty Arabic pastries. Exquisite beaded curtains offer glimpses of the seaside to create a soothing connection with nature.

28

The handsome Lexington Grill is based upon the concept of American steakhouses. Strong textures and dynamic materials help convey the masculine atmosphere of a classic New York with white veining alludes to the meaty cuisine on offer; table tops have been inset with hammered copper, and banquettes have been upholstered with burgundy and cream leather embossed with a crocodile hide pattern. Contemporary art adds to the moody vibe; sculptures created from copper woven with synthetic horse hair interpret ageold materials in a new way. A collection of very detailed, high-contrast black and white images of musical instruments were commissioned from photographer Peter Defty to reinforce the space’s association with the sophisticated jazz scene of New York City. Qasr al Bahar offers guests dining in a cool, lightdécor borrows from the gardens which surround the restaurant’s outdoor terraces, and on the wall behind the buffet counter, green and white mosaic tiles introduce a crisp contrast to the vibrant fruit displays. With private nooks that can be enclosed for more intimate dining experiences, Marjan has an patterns and designs. The juxtaposition between the traditional and the contemporary is emphasised by furnishings that blend function with artistry, for example a locally crafted chandelier made from bronze spheres in varying sizes. Balcony seating on the upper levels looks onto the idyllic panorama of the coastline. Striking contemporary artwork by artist Sasan Nasernia depicts abstracted Arabic calligraphy.

Grind, Sand, Strip, Buff, Burnish, Polish & Edge... ULTRAFLOOR The process of polishing this type of surface with floor grinders is similar to refinishing wood with a floor sander. Concrete grinders are used to gradually grind down the concrete surface using a combination of diamond tooling and formulated liquids to achieve the desired shine and smoothness. A properly finished and maintained surface is likely to give 100+ years of service, whereas other materials, in much shorter time frames, will peel, flake, stain, chip, bubble or fade. Historically creating a good looking, long lasting polished concrete floor has been messy, complicated and often time consuming. However Ultrafloor have developed a superior solution to anything else on the market. The machinery used from surface preparation to polishing has given clients versatility, speed, maneuverability, productivity, and the results set them apart from the competition.

The demand for polished concrete flooring is growing; it’s hard wearing, utilises the existing substrate and looks good. Ultrafloor have utilised the WerkMaster range of grinding machines, all of which can uniquely grind, sand, strip, buff, burnish, polish, and edge to within 1/8” (3 mm) of the wall - 7 machines in one. The only decision that needs to be made is choosing the appropriate sized machine for the job – from kitchen worktop to a 10,000 meter plus floor. The two technologies that has enabled this breakthrough are firstly the use of eight counter rotating discs (conventionally single/double head or planetary machines have been used) and secondly simple to use ‘plug in tooling’, that can easily be changed per application- giving each machine full versatility. All machines are compatible with the MaxVac range of vacuums making floor preparation a virtually dust free process. The final step is how to keep the floor looking great and slip free. Ultrafloor have developed an environmentally friendly sealer and cleaning formulations to eliminate high maintenance

and surface break down. These formulations ensure stain and etching resistance to acids, wine, coffee, vinegar and other chemicals- plus a slip free formula that exceeds industry standards. A properly prepared, polished and sealed floor is a valuable investment, either in your home or within a commercial environment. The Ultrafloor solution enables those that use it to enjoy the benefits of having a distinctively beautiful, long lasting, safe, easy to clean and maintain concrete floor.

How would you describe The Sofa & Chair Company as a brand?

40

Our brand can be described as truly British luxury; classic, desirable, aspirational for all. We have fairly recently extended our collection to include not only exceptionally high-quality upholstered sofas, armchairs, ottomans, beds and headboards, but a whole range of other carefullyselected items selected from collections shown in Paris, London and of course, at Milan Design week. These range from scatter cushions and throws to rugs, curtains and accessories.

What can potential clients expect of the process of creating bespoke pieces of furniture? How can you assist clients in creating a 'total look’ for a room (through accessories etc.)? A bespoke item almost always begins with a drawing, as well as inspirational images so that we can understand the look a client wants to create. Our talented design team are then able to translate the client’s vision or idea into a comprehensive and detailed furniture design. Many of our clients look to The Sofa & Chair Company to create a ‘total look’ for a room, and we have a dedicated and extensively experienced sales team who are able to work with individuals in order to pair upholstered pieces with handselected, often exclusive and even totally one-off accessories which we also stock. Our West London showroom is great for assisting in inspiring clients, and

THE HALLÉ ORCHESTRA – SILENCED BY SELECTAGLAZE!

>

After years of decay a refurbishment of the former St. Peter’s Church has brought this historic Victorian Grade 2 Listed building back to life. Located in Ancoats, a part of Manchester widely regarded of the city’s heritage, St. Peter’s is now fully operational as the home for the world renowned Hallé Orchestra and its

42

has had a permanent rehearsal venue in its 156 year history. The refurbished church also provides facilities for small orchestral and choral public performances. Over the years the appearance of the building has remained substantially unaltered, both inside and out. However, sound tests revealed a problem internally with the clarity in the rehearsal space and potential noise outbreak. Acousticians Sound Space Design proposed treatments to remedy these problems that were non-invasive and with no material effect on the building fabric. The lack of clarity within the church was affecting the members of the Orchestra’s ability to hear each other and play in ensemble. The solution was to provide sound nave ceiling of the church and to reduce the reverberation Sails” were installed within the space using a series of building as it was found. acoustics of a building and keeping the sound of the outside world at bay are essential to a performance venue, the issue especially to those living or working in the vicinity of a music venue, adversely affecting health, wellbeing and concentration. Operators of such venues are obliged as part of a license to address issues of noise breakout but this can be particularly problematic with older buildings where ill Most single glazed windows reduce noise ingress and egress double glazed windows only achieve 30-35dB. However,

a very practical solution is found with Selectaglaze’s secondary glazing systems, which can provide noise reduction up to 50dB. This is a reversible adaptation and therefore in most cases acceptable to heritage planning Selectaglaze treated a total of 44 large round head windows and one three metre diameter circular feature window using a total of 109 secondary window frames. Hinged casements window heads and circular window which were treated with locking and installed with a 150mm cavity to the primary

In addition to noise insulation secondary glazing also cuts heat loss. This together with effective frame seals serves to reduce convection currents and so provide a more comfortable performance space. The installation was a challenge due to the size and height of the windows and Selectaglaze worked closely with the contractor, City Build, delivering fully fabricated frames that could be rapidly installed from the access scaffolds. Selectaglaze is the UK’s leading designer, manufacturer and installer of secondary glazing. This is used in all types of building but is particularly appropriate for traditional and listed properties. Selectaglaze produces guidance notes covering Noise Insulation, Energy Saving and Security and a comprehensive Product Guide. A technical advisory service and RIBA approved CPD Seminar are also available to Architects, Building Surveyors and Interior Designers. BEAUTIFUL BAMBOO –

WHAT WILL YOU MAKE OF IT?

W

hen we think of bamboo, we may not give it priority on the list of beautiful things, but this highly attractive natural material provides interior designers with a sustainable, attractive product that can be used to make a multitude of furniture and gift items, as well as its more traditional use as a floor and wall covering. Moso Bamboo is hugely flexible in its potential use, and through greater understanding of the properties and capabilities of this material designers will find this a truly ‘unlimited’ choice.

56

Did you know for instance, that BMW has used bamboo for the dashboard of a number of its models, and leading designer Tejo Remy & Rene Veenhuizen chose bamboo to produce a stylish, contemporary chair. One product designer used bamboo to craft a briefcase highlighting the wide versatility of this material. Bamboo is used extensively in the manufacture of kitchen and bathroom units and surfaces where a highly original and contemporary look is desired. The more traditional use of bamboo is of course as a wall, floor and ceiling covering and has been chosen for many high profile design projects throughout

the world. Bamboo was used to create a seamless visual space of floor, wall and ceiling at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. This outstanding material was chosen for flooring and wall panels at the Design Museum, London for its design to win project by architect Urban Salon, solid panel and veneers were used at the Wuxi Grand Theatre in China, and most recently world-renowned interiors architect André Fu, choose our bamboo for the recently completed Opus suite at the Berkeley Hotel, London. Bamboo is a material highly suited to a retail environment. It offers unlimited design possibilities, particularly if a contemporary co-ordinated or contrasting look is desired. Contrasting designs can be achieved by mixing the colour finishes, and also by connecting the bamboo strips in different ways, for instance horizontally, vertically, or crushed – these strips then make up a finished panel. Bamboo doesn’t just look beautiful, it is a high performance material being extremely robust, durable and hardwearing making it suitable for areas of heavy traffic. It also scores heavily in an interior environment where public health and wellbeing is a priority

ISSUE 09 - 2014

and where other building products have anti-allergenic properties. Environmentally, bamboo outperforms wood every time. Moso bamboo is probably the most environmentally friendly and sustainable species in the world, due to its harvesting and production processes which are carried out to the highest standards of environmental and manufacturing control. The species of bamboo used is exceptionally fast growing, therefore making it non-viable as a food source for Panda’s which graze off low, slowgrowing varieties. Bamboo from Moso is the only bamboo company which has full carbon footprint and LCA certification which guarantees that all its products are carbon neutral (or better) over their full life cycle. The use of Moso bamboo products – especially in Green Premium – contributes to a higher score in the leading sustainable building certification systems LEED and BREEAM. To request samples or for further information on the capabilities and design flexibility of bamboo, visit our UK website www.mosobamboosurfaces. co.uk or contact the sales team on 01793 208030 (option 2) or email enquiries@mosobamboosurfaces.co.uk

NEW ‘S’ MODELS SHARPEN THE SPORTING EDGE OF THE

CONTINENTAL GT RANGE WWW.THEARTOFDESIGNMAGAZINE.COM

ISSUE 09 - 2014 >

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 09

The appeal of the world’s most stylish, luxury grand tourer is enhanced with the introduction of the new, sporting Continental GT V8 S. Available as both a coupe and convertible, the new GT V8 S models bring added excitement to the Continental range with lowered and retuned sports suspension, sharper steering, dramatic ‘S’ signature styling cues and a distinctive soundtrack from the uprated V8 engine. These two new models expand the Continental family and provide an even more engaging driving experience from Bentley’s already renowned 4-litre twin-turbo V8 powertrain. The new Continental GT V8 S Coupe and Convertible will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Show on 10th September, 2013.

The GT V8 S coupe dispatches the 0-60 mph sprint in just 4.3 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.5s) onto a top speed of 192 mph (309 km/h). The performance of the GT V8 S convertible is equally impressive, reaching 60 mph from a standing start in 4.5 seconds (0100km/h in 4.7s) and a top speed of 191mph (308km/h).

Commenting on the introduction of the two new S models, Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, Chairman and Chief Executive, Bentley Motors, said:

The increased performance is achieved without detriment to the V8 engine’s class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions, or its ability to cover more than 500 miles (805 km) between

for the convertible are 25.9 mpg (10.9 l/100km) and 254 g/km.

More power, more performance, and a range of 500 miles on a single tank

Building on the success of the acclaimed Continental GT V8, the new GT V8 S models feature a more powerful version of Bentley’s highdeveloping 521 bhp (528 PS / 389 KW) at 6,000 rev/min and an immense peak

This impressive combination of power, performance and economy is the result of an array of advanced technologies employed in the design of the Bentley V8 engine. Variable displacement, in which four of the eight cylinders shut down when cruising, reduces fuel consumption without any loss required, the engine switches back automatically and seamlessly to the full eight cylinders. The high-technology V8 engine also features high pressure direct injection, low friction bearings, advanced thermal management, energy recuperation via the electrical charging system and innovative turbocharger

A more agile, responsive and involving driving experience

The power and performance of the GT V8 S models are complemented by a range of chassis enhancements which deliver greater agility and a more involving driving experience without compromising the Continental’s legendary ride comfort. The GT V8 S retains the aluminium double-wishbone front and trapezoidal multi-link rear self-levelling air suspension with continuous damping control that is common to all Continental models. For the GT V8 S, there is a more sporting setup with subtly different tunes for Coupe and Convertible. Lowered sports suspension (by 10 mm) is complemented by increased spring rates (45% front, 33% rear) and revised damping for a more engaging and responsive drive. Bush stiffnesses are increased by up to 70%, while the rear anti-roll bar is stiffened by 54% over the standard GT V8 models for improved body control and turn-in. A recalibrated steering system completes the new chassis system, offering both improved precision and feedback through changes to static toe and camber and new software. Careful recalibration of the Continuous Damping Control (CDC) system ensures minimal degradation in ride comfort despite the gains in handling performance. The Electronic Stability Control is also optimised for the GT V8 S. The retuned system allows increased wheel slip at higher speeds with engine torque reinstated more quickly after a system intervention. This provides the spirited driver more opportunity to exploit the full potential of the uprated chassis and increased power.

1,700 rev/min. Delivered via a close-ratio ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, the increased power provides effortless, exhilarating high performance with breath-taking acceleration and imperceptibly smooth power delivery. Switch into S mode via the gear selector and the V8 S rewards the spirited driver with a sharpened throttle response while gears are held for longer with faster shifts.

The V8 engine’s variable displacement system presented a unique challenge for Bentley exhaust engineers. When cruising on a light throttle in 4-cylinder mode, the exhaust system is tuned a distinctive V8 sound. However, under acceleration the character of the system changes dramatically as the twin turbo-charged Bentley V8 transforms into an emotive growl.

front splitter, side sills and rear diffuser front-end lift and provide greater stability at higher road speeds. Shared with all Continental models, the all-wheel drive system employs an advanced Torsen differential and a 40:60 rear-biased power split. This ensures the delivery of safe yet dynamic handling in all road conditions.
