“NOUVEAUX MONDES” BY CHRISTIAN LACROIX MAISON AND DESIGNERS GUILD 2015 COLLECTION Explore a tropical paradise in this exotic collection from the House of Lacroix This season, Christian Lacroix Maison invites you on a journey where breathtaking new worlds await. Its colours and textures are intense. The sheer spectacle and beauty of undiscovered worlds reminds us that there is no better creation than nature itself. Nouveaux Mondes, the new Christian Lacroix Maison fabric and wallcovering collections for Designers Guild, celebrate the exotic flora and fauna of that journey through dense rainforests alive with spectacular wildlife and through the lush, verdant vegetation of Caribbean islands.
12
These new designs celebrate the raw and unspoilt variety of nature as if remembered through a traveller's dream “Manaos” a tumbling display of the bright exotic edible delights hanging from the canopies in the heart of the forest, while “Mariposa” and “Rio” depict the beautiful multicoloured winged insects that fill the air as we reach through the branches to taste them. Intricately detailed butterflies and more are layered in all their diversity and majesty. At the foot of a waterfall, the “Iguacu” velvet mirrors the reflection of light and colour as the water tumbles through the sunlight. Within this spectacular new world, we glimpse a panther, or was it a tiger, or both? “Pantigre” is an exotic and colourful combination only possible within a dream. The forest canopy is captured in all its vitality in the “Canopy” design – bursting with exotic flowers, feathers and foliage on a lattice work trellis that adds a structure to the wild and wonderful. Away from the forest, the collection offers moments of reflection and a return to the fringes of civilization. Bathed in sunlight, “Barbade” is a memory of the elegant wicker baskets that adorn the market stalls, laden with nature's bounty.

“ATELIER CAMARGUE CHRISTIAN LACROIX MAISON AND DESIGNERS GUILD 2015 COLLECTION In the South of France, where the Rhone River meets the Mediterranean Sea, there is a neardesert region called La Camargue, where herds of wild horses still roam free and the famous Camargue bull is bred. The raw vitality and unique characteristics of this untamed region, its inhabitants and its cultural traditions inspire this exciting collection of plain and textured fabrics. Atelier Camargue introduces four beautiful new fabric designs: a double sided faux-suede, an innovative new texture with a brushed satin finish, a chunky and timeless chenille cloth and a beautifully soft plain linen. A collection of versatile, highly durable and luxurious new fabrics in the inimitable Lacroix palette.

STATIONERY CHRISTIAN LACROIX MAISON AND LIBRETTO SPRING 2015 COLLECTION The Christian Lacroix “Papier” range, distributed in leading stores and museums around the world, such as Le Bon Marché, Liberty, Selfridges, Lane Crawford and Neiman Marcus, was launched in spring 2010. It includes notebooks and sketch pads, along with correspondence, greeting and birthday cards, which draw their inspiration from the Christian Lacroix icons but also from the spirit of the times. Embellished with ever-more refined techniques and graphics, we find, for example, the ‘Voyage’ diary, and a selection of more contemporary notebooks such as the ‘Love who you want’ journal, designed as a vibrant and humorous homage to the "Mariage pour Tous" campaign in France, not to mention the range of monochromatic notebooks in either black, gold or silver, to accompany you every day. 16

Exclusive Town House Refurbishment in Belgravia Focus SB Ltd is pleased to be involved in the redevelopment of a property at one of the most exclusive addresses in London. Wilton Crescent was drawn up as part of the original plan for the development of Belgravia in 1820. It was built in 1825 and the north side of the crescent, where the property is located, was stone clad between 1908 and 1912 reflecting the growing prestige of the area. Focus SB were involved in the design and specification of all electrical accessories for a property in Wilton Crescent, with Product Consultant Gennifer Ling working closely with John Coughlan of Electrotech the Electrical Contractors for the development. John Coughlan comments, “The reason I have always preferred to use Focus SB is the company’s facility to produce non-standard accessory plates to any specification or finish. We have continued to use Focus SB as they offer similar products to Forbes & Lomax at more competitive prices.”
20
The re-development involved refurbishment of the town house and joining the mews house, at the rear, to the main building, creating a stunning glass atrium in the process. A pool and spa area was created under ground and the whole property was modernised to the highest specification and attention to detail. John continues, “On this particular project at Wilton Crescent, Focus SB provided a good brochure package and plate sample pack followed up by samples issued to the site.” A range of bespoke plates and switches were subsequently designed including plates manufactured to match the unique bronze bathroom fittings. These bespoke plates were matched to a wide range of standard plates from the Focus SB Horizon Range. John adds, “As a contractor I need to know delivery times and Focus SB always delivered on time as agreed, this is very important to us when up against tight deadlines.” In the 19th and 20th century, Wilton Crescent was home to many prominent politicians, ambassadors and civil servants. Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900–1979) lived at No. 2 Wilton Crescent. There are two diplomatic buildings in Wilton Crescent: the Embassy of Luxembourg and the High Commission of Singapore, which is next door. The property is due to be marketed in the region of £45m.

LUXURY, STYLE, COMFORT, WITH THE HINT OF A RESIDENTIAL ATMOSPHERE FOR PRINCIPAL GLOBAL SOLUTIONS (PGS) INTERIOR DESIGN BY LOUIS HENRI (www.louis.henri.com) HIS FIRST OFFICE PROJECT Images Courtesy Bruce Hemming
22
The brief for these rooms in a grand Mayfair town house, 25 Upper Brook Street, was to provide maximum professional efficiency, but ‘cushioned in splendour’: pastel colours, gleaming wood, deeply comfortable chairs and sofas, original artwork, and a custom made chandelier in the boardroom. . Principal Global Solutions (PGS) was founded in 2010 to advise some of the world’s most affluent (UHNW) people. Their expertise spans commercial consultancy, all aspects of the property market, travel and logistics. A young team, mostly Oxbridge graduates with international experience, will organise just about any personal service for clients as well as giving business advice.

This could include VIP tickets for coveted events, booking world famous chefs, setting up private pre-collection fashion shows, even sourcing fine art, watches and jewellery. South African born Louis Bührmann established his own interior design practice in 2007, after studying Interior Architecture in Johannesburg, later gaining experience on product design for Andrew Martin and interiors for Northacre Developments. For his private clients, he has created magnificent apartments in London and Paris, a presidential suite in Dubai and a holiday villa in Cap d’Antibes, on the Cote d’Azur. standards, mostly to his own design, with furniture crafted by his brother Balthasar, a master cabinetmaker. He had known the clients, directors of PGS (Principal Global Solutions) for some time, understood that they wished to put clients entirely at their ease, but ensure the most advanced technology was in place. The offices are seconds away from Mount Street and Park Lane, both synonymous with traditional elegance and quality. The building has classically proportioned interiors with Grade I marble and plaster work. Louis says: ‘What a joy to work on such a formal space. I imagine someone like

a railway baron, or millionaire man of mystery would have lived in these rooms. And with changing times comes change of use, mansion morphs into a corporate office in the heart of London. After viewing the office, creating the concept felt natural.’ The clients wanted a spacious boardroom for members and guests, with a specially designed boardroom table seating up to twelve people, equipped with the most up to date conference technology, and an additional seating area leading effortlessly on to the heated terrace. This terrace has proportions as ‘fine as the listed panelling inside’ and we furnished it with seating and a lavish array of plants to extend our ‘summers.’
The boardroom table and sideboard were made especially for the space by Gareth Batowski Furniture. Photographs and paintings selected by art curator, Sascha Bailey, were the work of Damen Hirst, one of the world’s most successful contemporary artists.
boardroom, in this way creating two spaces. Louis used tree cushions from his Antibes collection for the sofa, and highlighted some of the colours from the lamp bases on others. He selected upholstery fabrics from Fox Linton and Abbot & Boyd. Soft furnishings were made by Ian Block from A.T Cronin.
Louis installed blackout blinds to ensure the lighting for video conferencing would be controlled. Grey striped pelmets in a fabric by Lelievre balanced the visual weight of the classical mouldings. The neoclassical ribbon and wreath motif on the walls was hand finished in gold leaf. A bronze horse sculpture served as a clever device to separate the more relaxed seating area from the
The gold chain coffee table was a happy discovery from Maison et Objet, the annual trade fair in Paris, interior designers’ happy hunting ground. Louis says: ‘I am a sucker for anything gold, if it’s not black or gold it needs to be shiny!’

He also describes the multi-purpose office space:
24
Four work stations were needed, two of them free for clients to use, with a screened off print area to allow for a free flow of work. ‘We intended the interior to be light and airy. Roman blinds add warmth, the cafe blind with polished brass poles adds privacy. Louis suggests that the Andrew Martin trestle desks give a ‘little cheeky Hoxton media feel to the space.’ A respectful nod to the past character of the building was supplied by a pair of 18th century fauteuils, as Louis aptly says ‘going to work shouldn’t’ mean plastic cubicles.’ The project had to be completed quickly to ensure nothing interrupted the clients’ work programme. Louis coordinated his team to finish everything within five weeks. No structural changes were needed, and the walls had previously been painted snow white, a perfect back drop, Louis considered, to realise his vision of optimum efficiency but a subtle layer of residential informality. Quote from Louis in case there might be room for a frivolous touch: ‘ We spend so much time at the office it might as well be comfortable and sexy at the same time. Aimee, my Pekingese, enjoyed being able to hop over to Hyde Park for a run, or just to soak up some rare sunshine was sheer bliss! www.louishenri.com

Clerkenwell Design Week (19-21 May) returns for sixth edition with full programme announcement Clerkenwell Design Week 2015 (19-21 May), sponsored by Renault, is set to build on the success of its previous five editions with an impressive mix of cutting- edge installations, exclusive product launches and insights into contemporary design and architecture. Since its inception in 2010, the festival has grown to become one of the most respected events on the global design calendar, with total visitor numbers topping 32,000 in 2014. William Knight, Show Director says, “Clerkenwell Design Week is a true celebration of this exceptional and dynamic part of London. Our distinctive model of combining commercial focus of the showrooms and exhibitions with the chance to match materials, creativity and use of urban public space makes the festival accessible and hugely popular. 2015 will see continued growth for one of the UK’s most exciting design events.”
Celebrating its sixth year in 2015, the annual festival will showcase the latest innovations by designers and manufacturers from the UK and around the world. Set against the historic backdrop of Clerkenwell, the three-day festival will be centred upon leading design showrooms in the neighbourhood, as well as four exhibitions - Design Factory, Platform, Detail and Additions. CDW Presents, the festival’s commission and installation programme, will return showcasing original projects and street installations by established and emerging names from the design and architecture worlds, stationed across all areas of Clerkenwell. As part of the Fringe series, local creative practices, from architects to branding agencies and craft studios, will host workshops and displays open to the public during the festival. This wider programme includes a new venue at The Old Sessions House on Clerkenwell Green, hosting Icon’s House of Culture.

DESIGN FACTORY
will also return to Clerkenwell Design Week launching a new range by Busk+Hertzog.

PLATFORM Platform at the House of Detention has established itself as the place to spot up- and-coming design talent during Clerkenwell Design Week. These include Louise Tucker, a Chelsea College of Art graduate whose fascination with weaving wood veneer led her to launching Pren, a sculptural lighting collection that takes its name from the Welsh for wood. Out of the Valley is another design start up, the brainchild of designer maker Rupert McKelvie. With experience in designing and building bespoke cabins for off-grid living, Out of the Valley will launch its first furniture collection inspired by this back to nature ethos. Polish designer Danuta Wlodarska, who started Two Or Three Things in 2014, will host the UK launch of her unique table collection available in painted oak, poplar burl or California walnut. Meanwhile, Dome Studio will build a site-specific installation for the show. African design company MaliMali specialises in making textiles using the ancient and wholly organic West African dyeing and painting technique, Bogolan, which means ‘painted with mud’ in Bambara. The company will showcase a range of contemporary fabrics in bold and graphic patterns, woven using 100% Malian organic cotton. Also new to Platform is UK-based A White Workshop, which will introduce its first range of foldable wooden furniture by its founder Alexander White.

SOLVING WET AREA PROBLEMS Julie Jarvis, Technical Director of D R Services, gives advice on avoiding problems with wet areas in hotels.
From weary business travellers to A-list celebrities, all types of people use hotels, even though the length of their stay, the reason for their journey or the way in which they use the accommodation may be very different.
34
Despite the variety of clientele, what the vast majority of clients tend to have in common is the fact they will stay in a hotel for just a short period, typically from one or two nights up to perhaps a fortnight. And the main effect of this, whatever a person’s social background or nationality, is that they are unlikely to treat a hotel room with the same respect they do their own property. Even ‘fair wear and tear’ can be increased by people’s unfamiliarity with their surroundings and can cause more serious attrition to the fabric of the building. While hotel rooms are frequently referred to as simply “somewhere to sleep”, most rooms these days also feature an en-suite bathroom or shower-room which, although they can help give guests a positive impression of their stay in a place, the fact they bring water into the equation actually also offers greater scope for damage. Issues such as damp patches or the smell of mouldy plasterwork might be something one associates with the sort of seedy establishments featured on reality programmes like the Hotel Inspectors, however water has no respect for star ratings, location or any other measure by which we might judge accommodation.
If a guest leaves the shower curtain outside the bath, or water seeps through some cracked grouting, escaping onto the floor in any quantity, it is almost certain it will find its way through to the ceiling below. Indeed there are examples of top hotels in our major cities where almost every soffit is stained and suffering from mould growth due to leaks from above. There is no completely foolproof answer to such situations as even full ‘wet room’ installations can be punctured or overtopped, yet specifying well designed and straightforward to install shower enclosures will go a long way towards addressing the root cause of damp. If we look first at the ubiquitous shower curtain, the simple answer is to opt for the more attractive, and much more reliable alternative of a glazed shower screen. They are far easier to keep clean, should not require replacing within the life of the bathroom interior: meaning they are more economic. Crucially, correctly specified, a screen continues to prevent water cascading onto the floor without any action from the guest using the shower. Prominent amongst the developments on the market seen as ideal for the hotel market are shower screens that make use of dry wedged gaskets, combined with channel sections sunk into the wall or sealed to the lip of the bath. Appropriate to retro-fit situations as well as new build work, one channel is recessed into the wall while the other fits unobtrusively along the top edge of the bath. The sheet of safety glass is then wedged into position with the
Issue 14 - 2015
discreet gaskets. An alternative version can have narrow fixed panels attached to the wall and bath, with a hinged panel able to swing back clear of the adjoining basin or cistern. Moving onto the more troublesome area of shower cabinets, designers should only opt to utilise level entry trays which incorporate features to divert water back into the showering area, and therefore to the drain. Contrary to the legend of King Canute, this trick of turning the tide can actually be accomplished by having a gently curving profile to the threshold, which still feels smooth under foot and facilitates the needs of people whatever their degree of mobility. The profile causes water running off the inner face of the door to flow back towards the sump which is itself normally low profile and centred on a box-out in the floor slab. This layout should again be backed up by having the cabinet sides installed with securely wedged and sealed channel systems. We know hotel operators are faced with the multiple challenges of making what is basically a temporary living environment as attractive as possible, while also ensuring the accommodation functions properly and is easy to maintain. Equipping hotel bathrooms with showering facilities ticking all of these boxes will offer a significant step up on the ladder to success. PIECE BY PIECE Curating Milan by Staffan Tollg책rd
THE ART OF DESIGN issue 14
>
Each year I come to Milan looking for a piece of design that takes my breath away. I’ve been visiting Saloni and the Design District for the ten years since I launched Staffan Tollgård Design Group, and some years have been more breathtaking than others. But I have never failed to be impressed by the utter scale of this enterprise. A major city practically brought to a halt by a global industry that converges upon it, travelling through it in determined directions – out from Garibaldi station to Rhofiera, through the Brera Design district to Zona Tortona, thousands of people politely passing each other on a tiny, rickety green bridge that passes over the railway tracks to dutifully weave our way through the upcoming designers of tomorrow in the hope of finding something unexpected and wonderful. This year I’ve been in town for nearly a week which has allowed me to really get under the skin of the Fair. Some of the show-stopping pieces I’ve picked out are also indicative of the way that I think the industry is evolving not trends - but markers along the design journey that I’m particularly interested in. I’ve been impressed by the pieces that have their own personality. Whereas in the past some of the most impressive brands have had very strong coherent identities, I’m noticing a burgeoning movement towards the creation of pieces with their own personalities and that allow a client or designer in turn to personalise or shake up a design scheme.
The best of Milan is a snapshot of our world, and it’s one that I’m still grateful and excited to be a part of.

FRAMING & PERSONAL COLLECTIONS This year was undoubtedly a good year for the Vitrine. The idea of displaying a personal collection of objects resonates strongly with my design values. Glass cabinets were imagined in a variety of sizes and shapes, from the rustic to the highly evolved at Rimadesio, Porro and Giorgetti to the beautifully decorative at Sé London. Piet Boon’s latest collection includes not only several glass cabinets of varying shapes and heights, available in a variety of metal finishes, but also a coffee table composed of a large clear box that is designed to be removed and placed on top of a client’s collection that becomes the backdrop to the piece. Their new pedestals offer ways to showcase personal and design objects and are available in marble and lacquered finishes. Giorgetti’s Town system frames and raises a collection of storage pieces on a beautiful lit plinth. The idea of framing an ensemble of furniture that in turn houses a collection of items is appealing to me, and the quality of the detailing, together with the marriage of hard and soft finishes makes it a very satisfying piece of design. HAND-CRAFTED PIECES One of the show-stopping showrooms was in fact outside of the show. The American furniture atelier BDDW is found on Via San Marta and has puzzled many of its visitors who aren’t used to a contemporary design store looking like a vintage gallery. The values of makers like BDDW, Mark Albrecht, or Apparatus, another American company that showed its pieces in the BDDW annexe across the road, are slowly but surely being assimilated into the more polished offerings of the big brands. Crafted items that show the natural beauty of their materials, combined with a certain almost industrial rawness can be seen in the rope, cord, natural edges and vintage inspired pieces that I saw elsewhere in the show. Mark Albrecht’s bar was a particular favourite at the Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition.
38
The Crono chair from Flexform and the Carmen Ottoman from Mood were two pieces that emphasised the more natural materials and unusual tailoring available from the Flexform Mood spectrum. The Traveller from Porro and Notch by Lema speaks of safaris and a less polished world. Swing from Giorgetti highlighted the brand’s manufacturing heritage also explored in its slowmotion roller coaster of pieces from their history. The Yoroi sideboard by de Castelli is inspired by the armour of the Samurai with a nod to deco. This piece speaks of the craftsmanship and process of its making - simultaneously beautiful, useful and very personal.

THE DRAMA OF CURVES & COLOUR I was impressed by the use of colour throughout the fair. There feels to be an increased confidence from manufacturers and with it an optimism and playfulness that was one of the markers of this year’s offering.
The Collection III from Sé London by Nika Zupanic used colour in their upholstered and ceramic pieces, as well as intersecting curves in one of the pieces of the fair, the new floor-standing mirror.
Together with soft but intense colours at Sé London, Piet Boon and Meridiani I also saw a preponderance of curves - more feminine, organic pieces that gained in presence from the use of colour they were shown in.
At Flexform Mood the new pieces of the collection benefited from accents of colour. Meridiani’s stand stood out through its beautiful and profound use of colour. Linteloo’s commitment to colour is one of the markers of its Feelgood Factor.

CUSTOMISABLE I was intrigued by the invitation that several brands offered to be involved in the final stage of their design process. The ability to customise their pieces offers built-in personalisation without compromising the design identity of the original work. This year Meridiani Editions launched Plinto, its latest exercise in customisation. An interplay between solids and voids, the collection allows the client to choose between materials, finishes and geometrical forms to create an entirely personalised dining piece. My new architectural wall and ceiling lights for Contardi, Recess, were well received, with visitors immediately grasping how they could be used for their projects on walls and ceilings in highly customisable ways. The concept, based on the stained
glass windows that enlighten churches, allows the metal frame to be custom cut to the client’s requirements. At BDDW the Shape Up light from Roll and Hill reminded me of Scandinavian design classics where the light could be brought closer to the table simply by pulling it down. The choice of shapes and finishes together with the placing of the ceiling roses offers a functional sculpture with each iteration. The 16 series from Bocci was one of the show’s most striking installations. Draped down from the ceiling, organic branches and hand-pressed glass leaves belied their industrial roots. Available as an installation or simply as a range of chandeliers, the 16 was part of a wave of products designed to be tailored by the end user.

WHIMSY No other place on the planet brings together the depth and breadth of design in one week and there was more than a touch of whimsy at the Fair, captured best with the giant rocking unicorn shown at Moooi’s circus-like display in the city. Their new seating and rug collection offered an almost Alice in Wonderland experience with the riot of colour and a play on scale and expectation. My new Contardi Belle AP, an adjustable glass wall light, reminds me of the bell that used to call us back to school from the playground. Nostalgic as well as whimsical. Rustica from Emmemobili, with its gingham marquetry, is part of a collection of new pieces that show the mastery of their craft lightly and refreshingly.

PREMIUM SURFACE TECHNOLOGY NOW AVAILABLE AT LATHAMS
42
The innovative and highly textured range of premium, Thermo Structured Surface (TSS) decors - XyloCleaf - which offers a variety of wood grains, linens and other unique materials - is now available through James Latham. Unlike anything else on the UK market, XyloCleaf is a highly original and exclusive range of decors which are created using a unique process of thermal fusing in which decorative papers are treated with melamine resins, that under heat and pressure become part of the panel itself, hence the term Thermo Structured Surface. This process provides not only a stunning end result, but also a product that is strong, durable and highly scratch and chemical resistant, meaning that as well as looking great, it will stand up to the toughest of challenges when used in high traffic areas. The sensational and inspiring new XyloCleaf collection is perfectly suited to premium domestic design schemes such as kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms as well as for wall panelling and furniture and it has already proved particularly popular within high end commercial, leisure and hotel specifications. The deep textures and intricate detail of XyloCleaf makes it difficult to distinguish from the real material it is designed

The transformation of a coastal artillery fort, into a hospital and now high end luxury residences…
44
New life has been brought to the former Bartlet Hospital, with Gipping Homes transforming it into 34 luxurious residences, while maintaining the beautiful features of this Grade II* Historic Site. The location, overlooking the eastern end of the Felixstowe promenade, has had an interesting history. Still standing on site are the remains of the vast walls of Martello Tower, which made up a small coastal artillery fort. The towers were built between 1810 and 1812 to protect England against Napoleonic invasion and were later incorporated into the hospital building. However, before the site became a hospital, it once housed the Bath Hotel which was famously burnt down by two suffragettes in 1914. It was then rebuilt during 1923 to 1926 to become a Convalescent Home using a bequest from Dr John Bartlet; a governor and surgeon of the East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital. Bartlet Hospital closed in 2008 and had fallen into a state of disrepair, until Gipping Homes took up the challenge of giving it a new purpose.
“One rarely gets the opportunity to work on such a fantastic building as The Bartlet – the original design and build quality is exceptional and we feel both privileged, and a little daunted, to have the opportunity to create a new legacy for generations to come.” Says Peter Blemings (MD of Gippings Homes) With the hospital being listed as a building of special architectural interest and being so close to the bracing sea, serious consideration had to be given to ways of raising thermal performance and comfort levels to modern standards. Draughty, single glazed windows were a particular concern, so Selectaglaze was approached for advice. Secondary glazing is a reversible adaptation that is acceptable to conservation officers and hence ideal for listed buildings. Selectaglaze developed designs that are sympathetic to the various window styles whilst reducing heat loss, eradicating the discomfort from draughts and reducing energy bills.
Issue 14 - 2015
Peter goes on to say “I first heard about Selectaglaze products from a trade magazine feature. I was impressed with the product knowledge of the technical advisor I spoke to, who then spent time with us on site working out how to overcome some intricate issues with this historic building.” Selectaglaze has so far installed in excess of 100 bespoke manufactured units from its slim line range, including counterbalanced vertical and horizontal sliding units, all glazed with toughened safety glass and fitted with high performance seals. Hello Friends! Hellooo to all of you! Builders, property developers, homeowners and especially bungalow owners! I am your friend and housemate. My name is DARKNESS! I usually live with you in the middle of your house, but can also be found in offices, kitchens, bathrooms and study areas. Whilst I feel very comfortable in these sort of places, to be honest I am terrified about what is going on due to the behaviour of sun tunnels. Oh, yuck! These devices - which spread natural day light - often completely banish me and I have to move to another bungalow or house further afield. Such treatment is so ungrateful from homeowners that I have sometimes lived with for many years! My dear Friends, I like you so much! Don‘t eject me, please! I love to live in your places.
Now I will give you a few pieces of advice on how to keep me in your home. Save Money. Don't spend out on sun tunnels. They bring daylight everywhere and where I normally live - expelling me from my home. No way! Better to buy some health pills than getting daylight. Do Not Let People Mislead You. If someone advises you to buy a sun tunnel, use your head and think! Show everyone that you can say No! and that you do not need any extra daylight for yourself or your family. After all there is plenty of daylight outside! Do Not Let Anyone Nose Around Your Home. When you have darkness once - don’t change it. You will get used to it over a few years. Just don’t worry. Although installing a sun tunnel is a turn-key installation and you do not have to take care about anything, with me you have nothing to worry about either!
Postpone Buying A Sun tunnel For As Long As Possible. Always find something more important that you need to purchase. To buy a sun tunnel always takes plenty of time. And, while I will not dissapear, daylight is the last thing what your family needs. If You Do Buy, Buy The Cheapest One. Of course, if do not wish to listen my advice, at least purchase the cheapest sun tunnel going. But please not the one with a crystal glass dome!! This is the one that will last forever and a day and I will never come back to you. Ouch! So, buy something cheap that will not work and quickly deteriorates. In that way we will see each other again soon. And, at the end of the day it is critcal that you do not to call, email or write to Lightway Daylight. I know them so well. They will send a specialist out to you free of charge who will suggest a solution. As I know you, you are unlikely to resist the temptation of purchasing a useless sun tunnel. That will mean I will have to move home yet again! Think about me DARKNESS. I like you so much and it is easy to get used to me. Live your life better with me than in an iluminated house!
Lightway sun tunnel illuminates spaces inside houses where there are no windows. Typically staircases can be areas where daylight is absent. But after installing a Lightway sun tunnel there is more than sufficient daylight. Furthermore, the Crystal Glass dome will not deteriorate by becoming dirty brown, yellow or milky after exposure to the sun - as with plastic domes. Photo: www.LightwayDaylight.co.uk

Darkness is beautiful. Darkness, especially during the day, when you walk from shiny-lit rooms you always need to be careful and being careful - particularly for me - is very important. In dark corners my friend dirt can hide as well as some of my favourite small-legged creatures and creepy crawlies. It is a completely different world here to the illuminated rooms full of flowers and daylight. That is so yuck!
Darkness is beautifully mysterious. You see one never knows who or what is waiting for you there! In a dark room everything appears so different. When you light things up with cheap artificial light you immediately have an ambient atmosphere everywhere. Just darkness and that’s it. You cannot substitute darkness with daylight!

A brick edifice emblematic of Montreal’s industrial history Nordelec Developments (Phase I) unveils its three-level penthouses that will be turned over to their owners in November 2014. Designed by the Cardinal Hardy architectural firm and whose model penthouse is decorated by HUMA Design, these residences that vary between approximately 953 and 1,951 sq. ft. are Nordelec’s jewel, a dazzling reminder of the industrial legacy of Pointe St-Charles in southwest Montreal. Starting Oct. 25th, 2014, interested buyers will be able to visit a fully furnished model penthouse. Perched on the top of this edifice that was built 100 years ago for the Northern Electric Company, these 36 penthouses stand out because of their exceptionally high ceilings that can reach approximately
17 feet in certain areas. Starting from $442,000, they are designed for bachelors, couples and young families who are looking for the perfect blend of the industrial loft with the characteristics of a modern space. The Nordelec building provides uniqueness and charm, the proximity to downtown and access to the Lachine Canal and Griffintown. Cardinal Hardy and HUMÀ Design Pay Tribute to the Neighbourhood’s Past and Present On entering the penthouses visitors are captivated by the extensive fenestration that enhances the impression of airiness that continues to build as one rises to the mezzanine level. An inspiring living room on the third level of some penthouses opens onto a

private terrace that measures approximately 300 square feet and gives an exceptional view of downtown. “We worked to create an experience of urban comfort that paid tribute to the neighbourhood’s past and present,” says Aurèle Cardinal, architect at Lemay+CHA and Co-Founder of Cardinal Hardy, the firm that created the Tour des Canadiens, the Redpath Lofts and the Bassins du Havre complex. The Nordelec penthouse interiors are creations of HUMÀ Design. The HUMÀ President, Stéphanie Cardinal, wished first and foremost to preserve the soul of the site. “We wanted to take advantage of the spatial elements and the industrial artefacts by adding a stamp of modernity,” says Ms.

Cardinal. Our eyes are drawn to the engineered wood floors made of black and white American walnut, the use of copper as a thread and raw steel for certain elements of the furniture. These elements contrast with the shiny materials used in the contemporary kitchen of the penthouses, including black and white thermoplastic cabinets. The quartz countertops also provide black and white counterpoints, while the porcelain backsplash, between the countertops and the cupboards, provide contemporary illustrations of designs from bygone days. HUMĂ€ Design recently won three awards at the 2013 edition of the Grand Prix of Design.

Urban Lounge, Terrace and Outdoor Pool Residents of Nordelec will have access to a spacious urban lounge of approximately 4,000 sq. ft., which is now under construction. This modern lounge will include a fireplace, pool tables, workout equipment and several relaxation areas. A string of panoramic windows will take up two sides and give those in the lounge an opportunity to contemplate the views of southern and eastern Montreal. From this lounge, owners will have access to the roof terrace, the location of the outdoor pool.
20 Months and 200 Consultants/ Contactors The Nordelec project is enormous. To date, Nordelec Developments (Phase I) has erected a total of 36 penthouses and 67 urban lofts. Phase 2 will see the addition of approximately 135 condos anticipated to be ready for occupancy in the spring of 2015. On completion, an additional 1,131 units are planned for future phases of Nordelec. With approximately 20 months of construction time and nearly 200 local contractors and consultants contributing to the construction, this represents a substantial investment by the developer to the Montreal economy.
Revitalization of a Neighbourhood 54
Located in southwest Montreal, Pointe StCharles Neighbourhood is a booming area because of its accessibility, green spaces and businesses, mainly on Centre, Wellington and Notre Dame streets. Residents of the building and the neighbourhood will benefit from shops planned at the Nordelec concourse level. “The redevelopment of the historic Nordelec building is an exciting opportunity to participate in the revitalization of the Pointe St-Charles area,” states Annie Dufresne, Sales and Marketing Director for Nordelec Developments.
A Community of 2,000 Workers and 2,000 Residents At its height in the 1940s, the Northern Electric Company employed approximately 4,500 workers. Today, the Nordelec houses hundreds of creative and innovative companies that employ more than 2,000 people. At the end of the planned residential redevelopment phases, up to two thousand other people will also be able to live there. “These new home owners, some of whom have already moved in, will live here and give life to the neighbourhood,” explains Annie Dufresne. THE INTERIORS GROUP FIT-OUT JUST EAT
The Interiors Group has designed and fitted out 40,000 sq ft of brand new interior space for Just Eat, set across two floors at Imperial Place in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. Just Eat is an award winning, world leading online takeaway ordering service acting as a web based intermediary between independent takeaway food outlets and customers.
58
Due to company growth in the UK, Just Eat decided it was time for an office expansion and refresh. The Interiors Group were briefed by the client to create a dedicated meeting room suite made up of a dynamic group of meeting room spaces in one wing of the new floor they have taken. The remainder of the floor was to be made up of cellular offices and open plan workspace, broken down by congregational spaces with soft seating and breakout furniture. While a large central tea-point would provide a unifying space bringing all the teams together with a modern, fun and energetic interior that would reflect the company image. This project was fitted out over two phases so as to minimise disruption to staff. Work to the new floor was classed as Phase 1, while Phase 2 consisted of the refurbishment of their existing floor two stories below. The challenge of this project was to create a unification between a light refurbishment on the first floor and the brand new fit out on the third floor. The Interiors Group met this challenge by creating a central gathering
space on each floor, this area is visible through the central atrium which runs throughout the whole building. The teapoints on each floor provide a bright fresh space and have been executed using similar finishes for the units, counter top and splash back but differing flooring. Michelle Weiss, Facilities Manager for Just Eat commented: “The Interiors Group came up with a fantastic design for our office, the communal areas work very well and allow us flexible use of the space. The project was complicated and involved moving people around the office as areas were refurbished, The Interiors Group were not fazed by this and did everything they could to minimise disruption to the business. It felt like our site manager was part of the Just Eat team because he was so engaging and helpful with everyone. They worked closely together with us and any issues that came up during the project were quickly identified and put right. The Interiors Group offer a professional, personalised service and I’d happily recommend them. “ The Interiors Group wanted to create design with a story representative of their client’s identity. When you walk into the reception you are greeted within the first open area which appears like an intersection of a street. You can then follow the path along the street complete with stylized trees, this leads you into the meeting room suit which is broken up staggered individual doors or you can cross
> www.theartofdesignmagazine.com
Issue 14 - 2015
the bridge to the open plan work space. Individual doors on the ‘avenue’ reflect the interior of its respective meeting room, all of which represent the different entrance ways and clients Just Eat have where the food is delivered. Every meeting room has its own identity and purpose from rooms like the ‘Granny Suite’ with velvet sofas and floral wall paper, to the functional ‘Boardroom’ with flip top tables and full AV. The ‘avenue’ also incorporates a large breakout space for informal meetings, the area is designed to look like a park with swings in it and a roller door conceals a large bar. Another area of the Avenue hosts two curtained rooms which can be opened up to expose another informal meeting area. The suite was designed to also serve as a conference space and a clever use of sliding folding walls and curtain walls enable the opening up of space from the boardroom to the breakout space to fit in a large quantity of people for either ‘Town Hall’ meetings or other events which happen a few times a month. The wallpaper, carpet and style was carefully chosen with the client who then filled each room with equal careful consideration, personalising each space with furniture, picture frames, and small details identifying the brand. This allowed them to truly bring a personality to each room while maintaining a clear design intent. To carry this story across the two phases and both floors The Interiors Group used a few elements like flooring, a variety of domestic style doors and wall features to tie everything together. Feature art work
played an important role within this unification, international artist Anna Rewinska was commissioned to create a large graffiti wall mural and two smaller pieces on the floors. The graffiti mural is located in the on the third floor tea-point spanning across the majority of the wall. It embodies the spirit of Just Eat, encapsulating what they wish to project into the future and encompassing past advertising campaigns. Finished, textures and colours were also utilised to convey the story. A sense of nature was pulled through with natural timbers in flooring, worktops of tea-points and timber details within the furniture provided by the client or sourced through Interion. While the majority of the open space was fairly neutral using grey tones with pops of colour, the interiors of the rooms were bright, colourful and full of pattern added with the use of wall coverings and flooring.
Greenery was brought in through tones using abstract green carpets in areas on both floors and abstract shapes at the base of trees on the third floor. While a multi tone flocked flooring within the first floor tea-point represents grass in the park. The Interiors Group have over 27 years of experience delivering stunning commercial environments. They are widely proven and trusted by both clients and professional project managers to deliver business environments on time and on budget.

If you haven’t thought of using wall panels in your bathroom project before, now is the time. Material advances in high definition print, core board construction, surface textures, extrusion-free options and installation methods have come together in Bushboard’s Nuance laminate wall panelling to give you excellence in design, with guaranteed longlasting style and performance. Recognising these qualities, Nuance won a prestigious industry award for Innovation in Functionality in 2014 from Designer magazine. Unlike other brands that are made from wood-based panels that will swell in contact with water, Nuance offers unrivalled performance with panels being uniquely manufactured from a patented recycled plastic core board that totally repels water and will not degrade over usage and time. The 2420mm high panels in a range of widths can be fitted from floor to ceiling, without any extrusions, giving you large expanses of decorative surface where joins are virtually invisible to the eye. The 30 Nuance designs, which include luxurious True Scale granite and marble, offer design scope for any bathroom interior. The panels are lightweight to handle, easy to install and provide a 100% water-impervious surface confidently backed by a 15 year guarantee. The large format panels can be uniquely fitted without extrusions which greatly enhances the aesthetics by providing a seamless decorative surface. Panels are an ideal choice for designers and specifiers working on hotel, leisure and residential applications and who are looking for a product that will deliver high performance, easy maintenance, stylish looks and value. There is also a choice of worktops in laminate and solid surface to complement the designs and provide solutions for vanity areas. Nuance bathroom wall panels are available in five different sizes, offering the design flexibility to luxe up any bathroom interior, from wetrooms and level access showering to

conventional shower enclosures and around baths. For the full design solution, panels can also be turned horizontally to make an easy maintenance, waterproof surface behind washbasins, toilets and bathroom furniture, with the top edge postformed for a smart finish with no dirt traps. The 100% waterproof Nuance wall panels offer a stylish, credible alternative to tiles due to the lower turn -around time for installation and the ease of maintenance. There are no grout lines to scrub at to remove dirt build up and unlike stone, the laminate surface does not require special cleaning or ongoing maintenance to seal them against moisture. Says Neil Horton, commercial director at Bushboard: “Designers and specifiers can have complete confidence in the performance and longevity of Nuance bathroom wall panels. They can be fitted in any bathroom environment, even creating wetrooms and level access showering, without any extrusions to detract from the aesthetics or create a dirt trap. The high print definition and surface textures are extremely realistic, with True Scale designs being hard pushed to tell from real stone. Their polyurethane core board is inherently 100% waterproof due to its unique construction and will cope effortlessly with thousands of hours of showering and bathing.” “All of this, added to the fact that the panels are lightweight, easy to handle and fit and low maintenance, means Nuance is a very fit-for-purpose decorative choice in hotel, leisure and residential applications.” Nuance is available ex stock across the UK in 24/48 hours from a national network of specialist distributors. Ideas into practice The name of the new enterprise is a reference to the Bauhaus, an influential school of art and design from inter-war Germany. Joanne has been studying the movement and been inspired by its fundamental belief in taking ideas from art and design practice through to industry. She developed the concept for IDEAShaus – for which she is Creative Director – and it has a base in The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre at the University of Huddersfield. When The Duke himself paid his latest visit to the Centre, he met Joanne and was intrigued by the Doctorate of Enterprise now being offered by the University.

New enterprise converts design ideas into commercial reality Design tutor Joanne Harris’s business venture will bring student portfolios to the production line
D
ESIGN courses at the University of Huddersfield are a source of countless cuttingedge ideas from ambitious students, but how can they find their way from portfolio to production line? A lecturer has launched an enterprise that will act as a conduit between students and industry. It will also lead to an important new qualification for Joanne Harris, as the new business is at the heart of her research for a Doctor of Enterprise (EntD) degree, now being offered by the University as part of its mission to boost entrepreneurialism. Joanne is a senior lecturer in surface design – with industrial design experience herself – and she has launched a business she names IDEAShaus. For several years, design students whose work is a direct result of industry collaboration have been selected to exhibit at the highly prestigious International Surface Design Show, held annually in London.
Their design ideas – principally for walls and flooring products – have created exceptional interest and links with industry were being formed. But Joanne decided there was a need to take things further. “We were making important contacts with industry, resulting in placements, sponsored projects and employment, but the students’ ideas were not converting directly into any revenue,” she said. “Every year we have an exciting stand on display, as the only university exhibitor at the Surface Design Show, though I realised many companies don’t have the time to explore ideas and concepts even though they were very interested, so the real business opportunities generated through the exhibition are not being converted effectively into commercial enterprise opportunities. “So, IDEAShaus is a commercial enterprise working with current students and alumni to convert designs for the surface industry that companies can buy or commission.”
The EntD degree requires candidates to establish an enterprise and use it as the basis for research and a thesis. Joanne will use real case studies to show the journey of ideas from curation to industry. “As IDEAShaus takes shape, the enterprise could have a number of roles,” said Joanne, “such as acting as an agency for design students as they formed links with industry. It could also help design students boost their employability skills and play a part in developing Knowledge Transfer Partnerships that are formed between universities and industry and receive government-backed funding. Joanne Harris is now the Course Leader for the MA in Fashion Textile Practices at the University of Huddersfield and exhibitors at the next Surface Design Show – in February 2016 – will include some of the most talented graduates from surface design and postgraduate students from the cohort beginning the course in September 2015.

The frame is constructed of powder-coated stainless steel and covered in Iroko, an exotic wood that recalls the warmth and charm of the 1970’s. The version including an aluminum top creates a more contemporary style. The LED lighting which is integrated underneath the structure of the Air platform is equally available as an option for a more theatrical landscape.

On the one hand, ubiquitous Ceramics offer a limited, protective glaze that is simply not as hard wearing or stain resistant as fired porcelain. On the other, traditional natural stone collects and ingrains dirt and is always vulnerable to accidental staining and chipping.
PrimaPorcelain’s innovative construction looks fantastic but remains highly flexible and versatile to use. Its stylish elegance and stunning looks belie a tough character, durability and adaptability. Our Porcelain is manufactured in Italy from extremely pure clays and minerals, shaped by dry pressing and fired at a high temperature. This produces ultra-tough flooring with film star looks that is resistant and resilient, frostproof, fireproof, weather-proof and maintenance free. PrimaPorcelain is available in a wide range of stunning colours, hues and shades. Creams that reflect the sunshine of Mediterranean holidays; Beiges that set a tone of calm contemplation; Greys that project carbon coolness and sophisticated steeliness; Blacks that range from the dark side of midnight to the gloss of patent leather and Browns that are steeped in sensual indulgence. Designing a new Greek Legend Costa Navarinno, the award-winning resort on the most south westerly edge of Messinia, was the dream of Captain Vassilis C. Constantakopoulos who, from humble beginnings, made his fortune in shipping and was determined to use this to the benefit of his native Messinia. His vision was to preserve and promote the region by creating high-end sustainable accommodations and facilities that would attract international visitors to this remote and historic part of Greece.
82
International hotel and resort design specialists, MKV Design, worked with the client from the very early days of the project, contributing to the overall vision for the first phase, Navarino Dunes, and creating the interiors of the Romanos Luxury Collection and Westin hotels, the Agora Village, the House of Events conference centre, Anazoe Spa, Inbi restaurant and the golf clubhouse. MKV’s design aesthetic was a response to the location – the sea, the sun, the curve of the bay, the dunes and the olive trees. Views were paramount, so buildings were oriented to maximise these and the dunes themselves were made to play a key function as a verdant natural border between the public beach and the terraces of the suites. The in/out experience is everything; there are no barriers in between. MKV achieved this by, for example, continuing the key materials used indoors, outside, and, in reverse, by bringing some of the water channels which criss-cross the gardens and terraces into the buildings. Both public and guest spaces flow, from open terrace levels to shaded terraces into interior spaces that are open to the views and then indoor areas that are intimate or ‘closed’. As befits the eco-vision for Navarino Dunes and the objective to celebrate the natural environment, the key materials used are local and organic. Pale stone abounds inside and out; timbers are mainly dark, providing a counterpoint to the stone. Much of the upholstery is of leather or linen, and bronze or iron metals as well as mosaic, in both traditional and contemporary idioms, are widely used. Throughout, the key ingredient is attention to every detail that reveals itself little-by-little to delight the guest.

MKV also took its inspiration from the history and architectural inheritance of Messinia. The region offers a rich tapestry from the time legend and history were entwined, and working from the master plan, MKV developed simple but monumental forms with references to either to ancient Greek or to Byzantine vernacular. Yet, while the design incorporates historic references, MKV does not believe that resort guests want to “live” history, but rather that they want to sense it within a contemporary experience. As a result, the interiors of all the buildings at Navarino Dunes are designed to express the lifestyles of the people who will visit them for years to come. The sheer scale of Navarino Dunes, at 130 hectares with its array of large buildings, a signature golf course and numerous outdoor pools and terraces, raised the risk of the guest experience being impersonal. The design solution was to ensure the right scale for every element so that guests feel utterly comfortable and move effortlessly between environments, never overwhelmed but intrigued to discover. Maria Vafiadis, founder and managing director of MKV Design, describes her company’s approach: “I believe we create authentic design which, consequently, is timeless. We really think about the location of each project, its geography, history and past and present culture, and seek to bring this into our interiors in a considered manner. This is especially important when designing a resort where guests are buying into an experience which may need to engage them for many days. I would say that we have an instinct to design for the luxury resort experience”.

'Purest Pewter' – My approach www.melanieguy.com E: meljoyguy@hotmail.com Originally a ceramicist, now as a designer maker, I just have to keep crafting and interpreting my art. For fourteen years, working for myself, I have used a most beautiful metal – it is pewter. I never imagined I’d be making sculptures out of this after a whole career in education and a family, but I love the creativity and one design just leads on to another… I live and work in Cornwall, in the beautiful Tamar Valley where I am always close to nature and I combine this with profound memories of the time when I spent three years living on a boat. The moods and contrasts remain vivid and I refine these re-emerging impressions alongside the natural forces and movement of the nautical environment. I use clean, minimalist lines, employing the philosophy that ‘less is more’ - this has been called a Zen aesthetic. That period particularly influences my art and stimulated by experiences of sailing the ocean and living a life entirely within the natural world, I interpret them into these reliefs, which can hang on the wall or lay on the horizontal plane.

What I love to do is make a bespoke piece for a client, aspiring to their concept, or a piece that is designed for a specific situation – that way it becomes integrated with its environment in a symbiosis of ideas and thinking and feeling. ‘Life’, made for Truro hospital, was such a work and felt very special. The methods that I use create gentle textures and contours reflecting any light. I may use chemicals to darken the surface, to patinate it and then I might add metal powders to enhance the subtle grey tones with rich autumnal colour. With a universal abstract language my sculptural reliefs can be understood in design terms by all cultures and they can provide a visual highlight in offices and atriums giving a contemporary and fashionable style to the area. My unique aesthetic is a balance of art, craft and design, appealing to the discerning eye of established designers and all sophisticated home lovers – www. melanieguy.com

Naturally Inspiring Ashlar Block
Drawing inspiration from nature these latest two collections from Newmor provide a contrast which is sure to delight. True to its name, Ashlar Block captures the beauty and texture of finely cut masonry. Available in 9 colours, the collection brings a new depth in urban sophistication through its clever use of texture, natural hues and metallic highlights. The large scale block design provides the perfect industrial look which continues to be a popular trend in both commercial and residential interiors.
“ “
Suzanne Edwards, Design Manager at Newmor explains ‘it is the purity of stone and the precision with which the blocks are cut that define the Ashlar look. Our team at Newmor has achieved this through carefully mixing print effects with a finely textured emboss, all crafted and printed in our own manufacturing facility in Welshpool’.
The large scale design works well for any size of wall, its sleek design captures the natural stone finish and the introduction of metallic copper and old-gold adds a layer of refinement not seen in urban interiors. Elegant and understated, Fenn provides a timeless addition to any well-designed scheme. Inspired by grass-cloth, this intricate collection of 12 colourways uses Newmor’s unique embossing capability to create detailed vertical threads. The fine textured strands are married with layers of subtle colour to create a charming collection that is both delicate and structured.
Getting the texture and colour combination right was key explains Suzanne, ‘we began by developing a palette of highly usable natural shades. Subtle cross colouring added depth to the colour options, for example we mixed shades of tinted greys with heathery purples. Fenn captivates the best of the trend for natural textures and colours seen everywhere at the moment. As a collection it works as well in either a contemporary or classical scheme’.
The palette contains innocent shades of greys, off whites and blues, used in innovative ways which give interior designers the freedom to experiment with texture. For more information, contact our customer service team on +44 01938 551 990 or enquiries@newmor.com

designer Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof (Canada) will be a significant highlight of the event’s stellar line-up. The designer is renowned for his work in the ancient carved craft of glyptics, and these breathtaking sculptures are inspired by the work of the renowned Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. The 2015 edition of the fair, now in its fourth year, will also see a strengthened participation from leading international design organisations, including the World Design Capital – Taipei 2016 (Taiwan) and Beijing Design Week (China), which demonstrates the growing importance of reaching a global audience through the platform of Design Days Dubai.

audiences to experience their internationallyacclaimed works first-hand." Meanwhile, Design Days Dubai will also celebrate famed Lebanese designer Nada Debs, who notably helped shape and reinvigorate the regional design scene. Nada Debs marks 10 years as a professional in 2015 and her contribution to design will be recognised at Design Days Dubai through a retrospective exhibition of her iconic creations. The designer will also unveil a new piece that demonstrates her purpose for the next decade of her work. Live Installations and Performances
Designing with Light The significance of light continues to be a key theme in design for 2015, and one that is anticipated to captivate visitors’ imaginations at this year’s edition. Design Days Dubai will present the world premiere of ‘Lumiere’, by Commonplace Studio (Netherlands) and showcased by Victor Hunt Design Art Dealer (Brussels), which conveys the form and feel of a cloud through twenty-eight suspended pendant lamps, which have moving images projected on to their inner surfaces.
Design is as much an experiential as observational process and as such, other significant highlights of Design Days Dubai include ‘Posa Project’, a homage to the Emirati culture of falconry, brought by Carwan (Beirut/Dubai), which will showcase luxurious perches by Massimo Faion (Italy) as part of a live installation performance. Another live presentation comes in the form of the recreation of a ritual carried out during Iranian New Year, (Nowruz) of the setting of the table called ‘Sofraye Haft Sin’ by Iraqi/Dutch designer Hozan Zangana.
Adding to the wealth of pieces using light as their medium, world renowned design brands Zumtobel (Austria) will be bringing three of its key masterpieces by star designers Zaha Hadid, Hani Rashid, and Olafur Eliasson. Preciosa (Prague), will also exhibit collaborative works with the internationally renowned glass artist, René Roubíček, which utilise a blend of traditional and pioneering craftsmanship.
Design Days Dubai has the continued generous support of returning sponsors since being established in 2012, including the strategic partnership with Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, the Emirate’s dedicated Authority for culture, arts and heritage; French high-jewelry Maison Van Cleef & Arpels, who will showcase the dazzling new collection of exceptional stones entitled Pierres de Caractère; Emaar; and Audi – which will be launching the Audi Lounge new for 2015, welcoming key collectors and design enthusiasts to relax and socialise in a comfortable, design-lead environment.
"The special projects and installations at Design Days Dubai open the fair to broader audience. These captivating and often large-scale works push the boundaries of design as we know it and will awe design aficionados and enthusiasts alike," said Cyril Zammit, Director, Design Days Dubai. "Design Days Dubai represents the first time that many of these global design studios and individuals have exhibited in the Middle East, creating an exciting opportunity for regional

Vision London:
The Architectural Showcase Showcasing the latest building products and technology for design, interiors, art and architecture, Vision London 2015 opens its doors for two days on June 2 at London’s Olympia, providing the opportunity to check out its raft of products and solutions. There’s also a highly informative and worthwhile programme of seminars. Vision London brings communities together to discuss, debate and showcase the latest innovations and developments in architecture, design and the built environment. Over 100 organisations are exhibiting their new and inventive solutions that facilitate the creation of better building design. The event’s extensive speaker programme has gathered together some 100 influential industry figures to speak on a range of topics under the four prime themes of Future Materials & Systems, Technology, ‘Innovation in Architecture & Design and Building for Health & Wellness. Among the raft of highly informative seminar sessions, Future Housing is a prime topic with the UK now facing pressing housing issues. Architects and designers are developing solutions that are practical and affordable, designed with community in mind.
Tuesday Seminars:
96
Tuesday’s Innovations in Architecture & Design sessions include Designing Out Crime and Planning for Crime Prevention at 10.15am. Presented by Secured by Design, the UK wide police initiative, the seminar provides information and guidance in key areas. Topics include Police involvement with the Housing Standards Review, the organisation’s commercial and homes guidance documents and the new National Building Approval scheme that brings a simplified route to SBD compliance for developers. At 10.55am, Arup Foresight Associate Josef Hargrave presents his keynote talk on Smart & Resilient spaces – Exploring the future of the Built Environment. Smart Cities, at 1.15pm, looks at how we generate enough connectivity and data to develop a truly ‘smart’ built environment. Pioneers in this area discuss how IOT technology is increasingly being embedded, looking at benefits from energy efficiency, to remote maintenance to better health. The sessions also address how data is brought together and made sense of, and also considers security risk. Future Materials seminars on Tuesday include Façade Evolution at 10.15am. Jointly branded with CAB in the UK, this session looks at the latest thinking/research on glazed façades, covering an update on material sustainability and responsible sourcing, through to the latest in innovation and installation. In the Technology Talks arena on Tuesday, Digital Fabricators at 12pm looks at how computers allied to manufacturing and fabrication have opened up new ways for designers to engage with building. 3D design software is now commonplace and we have moved beyond rapid prototyping to now directly 3D printing components. Robots can build components at full scale and a new level of complexity is possible, allowing visualisation, customisation

and efficiency to be embraced in the same software program. Healthy Residential Solutions in the Workshop & Talks seminars on Tuesday, 11am, focus on ventilation, with a review of regulations, what is needed and how to comply. Other topics include demand controlled ventilation and why this is important moving forwards, as well as night time and intense natural ventilation.
Wednesday Sessions: Innovations in Architecture & Design sessions on Wednesday include Future Housing at 1pm. The seminar looks at how architects and designers are developing practical and affordable solutions designed with community in mind in view of the UK currently facing pressing housing issues. Case studies highlight the UK’s first amphibious and flood resilient home, designed to tackle increasing flood risk. There will also be a close look at social housing in Rotterdam, built around its own community school and where the children’s playground is at its heart. Future Materials sessions on Wednesday include Innovating with Low Impact Materials at 11.15am. It discusses how low impact materials can encourage the construction of low carbon healthy buildings and share knowledge about how best to use low impact materials. At 1.30pm, The CLT Engineer & Architect Masterclass launches Store Enso’s free CLT Engineer design software for efficient structural analysis for CLT structures. The software is heralded as the most advanced CLT program, constructed according to latest design standards and governing regulations in a variety of European countries. Vision London’s Technology Talks include the 10.15am session on Healthy Buildings, Healthy People. With emphasis on energy efficiency, the performance gap and now the circular economy, health and wellbeing remain at the centre of the push for improved resource efficiency. With so much time spent indoors, it is essential that the industry delivers healthy buildings. The seminar introduces the work of UKIEG and reports on the Active Buildings research project. Green Walls & Living Roofs is the 10.15am Wednesday Workshop & Talks topic, presents the benefits and design possibilities of green roof and wall technology. The session addresses key issues and development and is particularly relevant in the light of increased interest in green infrastructure to make our cities healthy and more resilient. The latest R&D bringing this industry into the mainstream is on the agenda, including thermal benefits of living walls and a growing frame technology that can be used across diverse applications. Located on the beautiful North Cornwall coast is Watergate Bay Hotel. It is the perfect place to go on a wonderful beach holiday; a place to relax and enjoy the breath-taking views of the ocean. With this in mind, all of the hotel’s bedrooms have all been designed using a fresh beach-side theme. Each room is different; they all have solid oak floors, some have double features, and others have a stand-alone bath by the window. A lot of the rooms also have beautiful views of the ocean. Furniture supplier UHS Group was hugely involved in bringing Watergate Bay Hotel’s coastal atmosphere to life. One of the pieces of furniture they provided the hotel with was their Vinci side and lounge chairs. They were manufactured from ash and painted white. The chairs were upholstered with Olicana fabric, along with the seat cushions in Columbus Jupiter and back cushions in Tasman and Antarctic Herring Gull. UHS also made bespoke work-bench inspired console tables, panelled headboards and mini-bar cabinets for all of the hotel rooms. Marbella to Belgium Ambience Home Design Completes Second Project for Same Client
Having finalised an interior re-design for her Marbella villa, client Daisy Willems entrusted Ambience Home Design with a blank-canvas new build in Belgium. Both client and design team are delighted with the results. Andrea Böck, CEO of Ambience Home Design, commented, “Throughout the Marbella project we built up trust and confidence which allowed Daisy to give us almost free rein when it came to her home in Belgium. Her only real criteria were to keep the living spaces and bedrooms elegant but to add a funkier vibe to the large 90-square-metre bar and games room. We wanted to express her youth, power, beauty and grace through the design while she wanted us to take responsibility for every last detail from accessories to crockery. In short, it was a dream-come-true project for Ambience Home Design.”
105
In the lounge, Andrea opted for a soft neutral-toned palate seen on the sofa, floor covering, wallpaper and handmade spherical glass pendant lights from Bocci. Contrast was added with blackand-white-striped armchairs and vibrant yellow occasional chairs. Moving into the dining area, a feature brass-finished ‘Portobello Cabinet’ by Julian Chichester added glamour and flair while a custommade white dining table flanked by brassstudded white- and stone-coloured chairs continued the soft neutrality. The study featured a minimalist contemporary desk with gilded legs (also by Julian Chichester), a silver and yellow Louis XVI-style office chair, cosy faux fur ‘Cutie’ armchairs by Munna, and feature metallic wallpaper to one wall.

The bedrooms were kept serene and unfussy using plenty of texture from velveteen throws to quilted headboards - the master has a sumptuous Chesterfield bed upholstered in metallic velvet from Arketipo and the second bedroom a pink tassel-fringed satin armchair. Meanwhile the laidback bar and games room turned up the volume with purple as the dominant colour (including a violet-cloth billiard table and plush velvety lilac sofas) accented by bold gold scatter cushions and star-shaped tables, silver skull wall lamps, cuboid wood-stump bar tables, an antiqued brown-leather sofa, curvy deep purple armchairs, a 60s-style brass and perforated steel chandelier from Delightfull, and fun Elle-Magazinecover artwork.

107 The month-long project involved an on-site painting, wallpapering and curtain-hanging team, as well as a ten-day installation undertaken in person by Andrea. It was completed to exacting standards, and to schedule, and the client was thrilled with the results. “They did an amazing job, again,” says Daisy. “The house looks marvellous, everything fits perfectly together, and it is not only a representation of my personal taste, but also very elegant and classy - exactly what I was looking for. My respect and appreciation for this Company only grew stronger during this second project and I hope to work with Ambience Home Design again in the future.”

Aesthetically Sound Acoustics Imagine sitting in a restaurant full of people and not being able to hear the person sitting directly opposite you... Imagine sitting in your home cinema continously turning up the sound because despite the volume you still can’t hear... Or imagine being in the furthest corner of the classroom and not being able to hear the teacher at all. Sounds bad doesn’t it. Modern living with cleaner minimally furnished environments or glass spaceinducing rooms and the downturn of suspended ceilings for a more contemporary feel, opens up a whole new set of issues typically regarding reverberation, and acoustics are now a recognised problem or application in every part of our daily life, from workplace to home, schooling to leisure. Open plan offices or glass partitioned buildings leave no place to hide and conversations are hushed if delicate. Open kitchens in restaurants allow diners to have real insight into how dishes are prepared but create a pots and pans running commentary, affecting a staggering 83% of diners who put ambiance before food. Poor results in schools have even led to the introduction of the acoustic BB93 report. So unless you are sitting in an environment from the past with deep piled carpet, draped windows and deep cushy sofas, you will at some point today suffer from reverberation wherever you are, perhaps even now.

But you don’t have to. Careful thought about sound and the application of wellplaced acoustic panels is very popular and they don’t have to interfere with the décor or design; quite often they even enhance it - and if wall space is at a premium, why not look to the ceiling ?
113
Soundtect has developed Class; a range of highly efficient sustainable recycled products that not only address the issue of noise but are used as positive artistic additions to rooms or areas for both commercial and residential applications. The new Soundtect CLASS range is also complimented by ‘Class Above’ a stunning range of baffles and rafts. Simple installation ensures that not only are the panels unbelievably cost effective & aesthetically pleasing, but the ease and speed of installation confirms that the new range from Soundtect is in a ‘Class’ of its own. Not only that, the panels can also be installed onto glass structures giving you even more flexibility. Acoustics needn’t be daunting and with support, an educated combination of design, affordability and performance, these quick and easy to install Soundtect acoustic panels are a perfect choice for architects, clients and contractors, providing the desired absorption in any environment.

3M Revamps Thomond Park Guinness Dugout Bar Innovatively crafted, decorative surface finishes have been used to refurbish the bar counter in the new Guinness Dugout Bar at Thomond Park Stadium, Ireland. DI-NOC Architectural Finishes from 3M were chosen and installed by MSi Signs as a cost-effective solution for transforming an ordinary bar counter into an extraordinary, aesthetically pleasing design aspect. DI-NOC Finishes in PS-504 Black and LE-702 Cream Leather were selected to do justice to the dark, rich colours of the Guinness logo. The films were applied to the bar counter top and front by two trained MSi applicators over three days, with no sanding down required. The films’ flexibility to conform to flat and curved surfaces enabled a fast and easy installation with minimal error and waste, bringing life to an existing asset with an entirely new sophisticated design. The intricate Guinness logo in the centre of each bar panel was designed and applied separately by MSi. For more information about DI-NOC Architectural Finishes call 0800 121 4739 or visit www.3M.co.uk/innovativefinishes.

Ruskin launches natural ventilation business Ruskin Air Management has launched a new Natural Ventilation business. Called Airolution, this service will provide complete natural ventilation solutions for commercial buildings including system design, supply of equipment, controls, installation and commissioning.
IAQ all year round in every type of commercial building without increasing operating and capital costs – or driving up carbon emissions,” said Ruskin sales and marketing director David Fitzpatrick.
The company, which has been manufacturing ventilation equipment in the UK for over 40 years and has factories in Kent and Shropshire, already supplies a complete range of products suitable for natural ventilation systems. Now it is adding the design expertise and logistics required to provide a complete service for the building engineering industry and its clients.
However, he pointed out that natural ventilation requires specialist skills and those charged with the design and installation must be fully trained and should ensure the ventilation is approached as an integral part of the whole building – not as an add-on.
Airolution is different to anything currently available on the market because every component of the system is tested together to ensure the final system meets the design brief and aspirations of the building owner and operator. It is then delivered to site, installed, tested and commissioned before handing over to the building’s operating team. This approach allows design engineers to verify performance claims before, during and after commissioning. The company also offers a ‘soft landings’ service to ensure calibration and fine tuning of the system are carried out to the building occupants’ satisfaction and that the necessary service and maintenance is in place. Collaborative The launch of the new service took place at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) reflecting the fact that natural ventilation can only be successful if it is delivered in a truly collaborative way with input from every profession in the building engineering supply chain from client to architect to design engineer and installer. It was attended by representatives from various professional industry bodies including RIBA, CIBSE, BSRIA and the Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES). Ruskin has been developing Airolution for a number of years in response to growing demand from clients for buildings that provide a high standard of indoor air quality (IAQ) with low running costs and reduced emissions and fuel consumption. There are five distinct offerings based on type of building and user requirements: Aura; Mood; Spirit; Sense; and Status.
“The record of natural ventilation in this country is patchy – to put it mildly,” said Mr Fitzpatrick. “We believe this is largely because systems are provided by a range of suppliers and installed by a number of different trades people without the necessary co-ordination. “The difference with Airolution is that Ruskin takes full responsibility for the system from initial design to commissioning, handover and ongoing operation. The control strategy is also crucial.”
117
He added that, by providing a complete solution, Ruskin can overcome the historic problem of ventilation designers not being involved early enough in the process to make sure it is appropriate for the building in question. Ruskin managing director Kevin Munson added that Airolution represented a considerable investment for the company in both technical development and new staff recruitment, but one that would pay dividends. “This has not been an easy or inexpensive undertaking for us,” he said. “However, there is strong evidence that naturally ventilated buildings have lower levels of airborne contaminants and are, therefore, better for occupant health and productivity. “End clients should not have to make a choice between healthier indoor conditions or lower running costs. With properly designed and delivered natural ventilation they can have both,” added Mr Munson. www.airolution.co.uk
“Building ventilation systems should be able to meet the basic brief of reducing overheating and maintaining good

WallArt will bring your walls to life with their 3D Ecofriendly wall panels that are made from the fibrous remains of sugarcane also called bagasse. This material, as a residue of sugarcane, is one of the world’s most renewable sources because sugarcane can be harvested up to 3 times a year. The total harvest worldwide is more than 1.2 billion metric tons yearly). This raw material, which is a plant fiber, is now used for WallArt 3d-wallpanels and is 100% recycled, compostable and therefore 100% biodegradable. But there is more to these wall panels than the environmentally friendly aspect. With just as little as a few tiles as an accent you can give any room or interior an entirely different look.

THE ART OF DESIGN issue 14 A High Performance from Remmers To compliment their recently refurbished showroom, a new ‘high tech’ workshop has been constructed at Charles Hurst Ferrari, the official Ferrari dealer in Northern Ireland. Remmers UK Ltd along with McLaughlin and Harvey Contractors were appointed to oversee the installation of a flooring system in keeping with the Ferrari brand and suitable for a workshop environment. The existing old concrete floor in the workshop was constructed in several slabs and therefore a high potential for movement existed. The floor required filling and levelling prior to the application of the new flexible surface finish. The system proposed by Remmers was a flexible 3mm visco elastic PUR resin system with a polyurethane seal coat. The seal coat has integral R11 slip rating and a high degree of chemical resistance.

Having collaborated on previous projects to create exciting residential and commercial designs combining their breadth of knowledge and expertise was an obvious choice for NSK complete Ltd and Jane Morgan Design. At the heart of their collaboration is a shared conviction that lighting has the ability to bring interiors to life and is an essential ingredient influencing how we feel and interact in any space. We all want to tell a story about who we are and Jane Morgan Design and NSK complete Ltd work in collaboration to create designs that illustrate just that. We see ourselves as storytellers, writing biographies using the power of light, colour, scale, contrast, balance and your personal accessories to create your perfect project design, listening to you throughout. Whether it is creating a pool of focused light to provide a sense of drama or enhancing the feeling of spaciousness through carefully directed and controlled light, using a detailed lighting assessment to create the best quality of light is our specialisation. We have a shared obsession with detailing, reading light to consider its impact on every junction, element and surface of the project to emphasise different materials carefully specified with you for your unique project, tailored to your budget. Current projects include designing bespoke solutions for two new oak framed buildings, one in Hampshire and one in Surrey working with the constraints of such building structures to deliver carefully planned discreet lighting that bring out the best interior detail. NSK complete Ltd has recently completed designs for Double Tree Hilton and Champneys Spa Resorts.
