Surface Rug, designed by Staffan Tollg책rd for JAB Anstoetz, 3.3m x 2.8m, Pure Wool

Rugs that scratch beneath the surface...

Some rugs tell powerful stories. The artisans whose hands weave, loop, cut and our natural world; the tarnishing of materials over time; the beauty of the industrial and organic world around us. These are the stories told by the new collection of rugs designed by Staffan Tollg책rd for JAB Anstoetz.

Bespoke begone Design curator Staffan Tollgård believes in the eye of the designer.

S

taffan Tollgård recently had breakfast with Mark Albrecht, the mild man of steel and leather of the New York furniture design scene. Mild of manner, yes. But not of heart or conviction when it comes to his Long Island based studio and the values and philosophies he has grown his business on. Passionate about useful design made from quality materials, Albrecht’s studio concentrates on a handful of commitment to the essential every day. Pieces such as the hand-crafted metal and woven leather chairs and

stools that are found in thousands of discerning North American homes, and in key design dining destinations such as The Modern at MoMA, NY and Tom Colicchio’s Craft restaurants. Pieces that are all handcrafted in his workshop by Each material is sourced with care and consideration of its lasting qualities and impact on the environment, yielding a signature approach that is minimal and timeless. And exactly as the designer intended. Not a millimetre more, nor less. Mark offers a carefully selected range of ten leather colours and three minimalist nutshell.

When he and Staffan discuss the ubiquitous ‘bespoke’ possibilities that most suppliers offer even before their collection has been unveiled, he is has become one of the buzz words of design, often to a design’s detriment. Interior designers are often intent on putting their own mark on furniture, on widening, deepening, re-colouring, raising, lowering … taking the form so far away from its platonic essence so as to be unrecognisable. And often just not as good. While interior design often demands a unique solution to what the designer believes to be a unique design problem, furniture designers

such as Mark Albrecht have arrived at the essential form of the piece, an ultimate answer. If the design needs to be amended to suit the interior, probably it is not the right piece for that particular puzzle. The breakfast meeting was one step in he has come to see as the new luxury: an emerging group of designers scattered around the globe who represent the perfect synthesis of essential design, respect for natural materials and heritage, and a return to traditional manufacturing processes and principles. Once found, the next step is to bring the brand into the

curated collection of contemporary design housed in his eponymous Design Store on the docks of Grosvenor Waterside, a stone’s throw from the celebrated design district of Pimlico and Ebury Bridge Road. With a few product designs under his own belt, and a new rug collection about to be launched by German manufacturer JAB Anstoetz, interior designer Staffan Tollgård is perfectly placed to understand the points of tensions and fusion between product and interior design. For him, Mark’s designs represent the essence of “functional sculpture” that he has spoken of as one of the guiding philosophies in his work. That Mark

received a Masters Degree in sculpture and photography from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris is not a coincidence. For him, Mark’s designs represent the essence of “functional sculpture” that he has spoken of as one of the guiding philosophies in his work. This signature approach – for Albrecht, the mark of the reductivist auteur – is found in another of the highly personalised brands that Staffan Tollgård is bringing to his Store this autumn. The notion of bespoke is at the heart of this collection – in the thought that has gone into its design, specification and production, in the architectural and interior design know-how embodied by Piet Boon and his talented team.

Quality, comfort, functionality: shared values of the new luxury - indeed the liveable luxury – that Staffan Tollgård has been collecting in his London store and in his own interior work, are captured in Linteloo’s own brand and the work that comes out of their headquarters in the heart of the Netherlands. Linteloo has become world-famous for bringing together international designers and European craftsmen to create contemporary furniture that lasts for years. His new concept turned on the notion of design for easy living realised in comfortable, made-to-measure sofas and chairs. KI PROVIDES COMPLETE FURNISHING SOLUTION AT NEW ETIHAD AIRWAYS HQ IN ABU DHABI KI has recently completed a major installation of its UK manufactured UniteSE workplace collection for global client Etihad Airways at their new Al Noor building in Abu Dhabi. The space comprises thirteen floors accommodating 1,500 staff. The extensive range of KI furniture designs chosen include open plan UniteSE workstations, configured as both bench and desking, all featuring pedestals and alongside open plan storage. The call centre floor features UniteSE 120 degree workstations with high specification Corian worksurfaces. There are several specialist training and conference suites where UniteSE tables and workstations were tailored to meet very specific requirements. UniteSE storage was specified for the open plan areas, suiting perfectly with the UniteSE workstations. 450 cabinets were installed and configured as lockers, lateral drawer units, recycle bins and cupboards and over 1,400 UniteSE mobile pedestals are utilised for personal storage. The conference suite features 450 KI Take5 arm chairs which are upholstered in leather.

KI also supplied all the breakout and restaurant furniture as well as over 1,200 CBS Flo, single and double monitor arms and CPU holders. The colour scheme for the new headquarters is a monochrome theme resulting in a smart and sophisticated finish. Similarly the cream colour marble flooring elongates the space where necessary. Glass partitions help open up the space from the corridor and individual rooms letting in much needed light. Other glazed partitions applied with vinyl film use Arabic patterns that divide specific areas without creating a solid wall and losing light. Stunning large feature wall graphics of aeroplanes and Etihad staff exemplify the importance of team work and unity which holds great importance in an organisation such as Etihad. KI workstations, seating, storage are also used by Etihad at their Global Sales offices in New York and Manchester. Overview

MPD London created a white linen summer look accessorised with white orchids that would enhance the riverside setting in summer months. For winter, a colour palette of gold, brown and black were chosen for warmth. The loose covers, gold accessories, and Persian rugs are easily removed and stored away for the summer period. The client had a collection of art books, original artwork and antiques that MPD London incorporated into the scheme.

brief To create a warm and welcoming home-environment whilst retaining the airy open-plan accommodation. The client requested two distinct looks for the summer and winter season with interchangeable accessories and furnishings.

Design The re-design was a general upgrade of all that had been done beforehand including architectural fittings and decoration. The modern building was a mixed-use development and the challenge was injecting warmth into the interior. Fabrics from J Robert Scott, Sacho Hesslein and De Le Cuona were used alongside antiques, Persian rugs and artefacts to give character and individuality to the space.

JOI-Design has recently renovated the public areas of the Hotel Landhaus Wachtelhof, a five- star superior hotel nestled amongst green forests, flowing rivers and wild meadows in the heart of the German state, Niedersachsen.

A modern-day castle originally constructed in the 1980s, for over a quarter of a century this family-run grand hotel close to the hub of Rotenburg has been warmly welcoming guests with its personalised and sophisticated touch. Now it presents itself in a new light, with every nook inviting guests to feel at home within the luxurious and exquisitely comfortable and setting. The picturesque landscape, the quails which inspired the namesake of this country estate and the provenance of its site - a former tannery - all influenced the designer’s concept for the new interiors. An intricate tapestry of the traditional and the modern translates the quiet beauty of the surrounding forests with a meticulous attention to detail.

THE SECRET BEHIND THE WORLD’S MOST INSPIRED RETAIL ARCHITECTURE The world’s best shopping mall developers all share a secret. For years they’ve known that their projects’ success lies not only on intelligent design; it goes deeper into its philosophy, its raison d’etre. In order to be truly peerless, every project in a developer’s portfolio must have a distinct personality and yet, these personalities must be harmonious with the holding company’s overall character. What separates ‘good’ from inspired, inimitable retail architecture is not a limitless budget, or the exclusive use of ‘starchitects’, but the careful the dedicated expertise in the art of retail architecture design. Having a celebrity architect behind any project naturally draws gravitas developers and investors know that successful retail architecture cannot focus on daring design elements alone.Whether a project comes as a standalone shopping mall or as part of a larger urban regeneration, the retail component is a key commercial aspect which must be carefully considered. Increasingly, smaller, to collaborate with ‘starchitects’ to bring about a fusion of glamour and design-led commercial viability. Design International (DI), one of the world’s most highlyregarded retail architecture consultancies, has quietly remained at the forefront of bespoke retail architecture for almost 50 years. The architects at DI have developed a unique and recognizable style of architecture which oscillates

between highly organic shapes on the one hand, and rational geometry on the other. In 2014, the practice’s signature style has prompted developers to bridge collaborations between DI and Renzo Piano Building Workshop as well as Foster + Partners for holistic, multi-dimensional spaces that require a strong retail component. The practice’s client list now includes many prestigious developers who place equal importance on both the architectural concept and the leasing potential of a project. With award-winning projects in over 45 countries and 36,000,000sqm of built architecture, DI’s forwardthinking approach has cemented the team’s reputation as the specialist ‘David’ against the giant ‘Goliaths’ within the overarching architecture industry. News from Forbo Flooring

FORBO’S CARPET TILES go full circle at I.T. Alliance The creative use of Tessera and Westbond carpet tiles from Forbo Flooring Systems has helped to transform 12,000ft2 of empty office space in Dublin into a modern and invigorating working environment for the managed services and outsourcing company, I.T. Alliance Group.

54

The office space extends across two floors of a purpose built office building. One houses the new European headquarters for I.T. Alliance whilst the floor above is occupied by its subsidiary company, Auxilion. Ranelagh-based design company Peacock Interiors was given the brief to deliver interior design schemes for both workspaces, based on a similar design concept to reflect their association, but employing different colourways to communicate their individual brand identities. “Both of the companies’

logos incorporated circular designs,” said Peacock designer Jean Feeney, “and we thought that we could create an association between the two companies via the flooring. A lot of people tend to shy away from circular designs, however for us it was a great opportunity to meet our client’s brief and produce a unique and crisp design. “Auxilion’s floor houses a youthful IT team so colours and finishes were fresh, with relaxed breakout areas for group discussions. The IT Alliance floor keeps a similar concept but the colour palette changes to suit the corporate brand.” Jean specified Tessera Teviot carpet tiles as the core floor coverings in the main office areas - charcoal for Auxilion and deep ocean for I.T. Alliance - and used luxurious Westbond Colour fusion bonded carpet tiles in contrasting corporate colourways to create a series

of circular breakout areas. Teviot loop pile tiles, manufactured from 100% Aquafil polyamide and boasting a high castor chair rating, are ideal for use in busy offices. With a minimum order quantity of just 1m2, Westbond Colour tiles offer creative specifiers the opportunity to differentiate with shade and texture and introduce highlights, accents and colour pops without generating unnecessary waste. The floor coverings were installed by Dublinbased interior fit-out and refurbishment specialist, TQM.

The final results were well received by the client. Pamela Wisely, Project Manager at I.T. Alliance Group said: “With the striking bold colours and designs on the flooring produced by Forbo’s products, it has created an environment where our employees want to spend time and we are more than happy to welcome visitors around the impressive building.”

LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL AT THE V&A 13-21 SEPTEMBER 2014 London’s internationally renowned Victoria and Albert Museum has provided a collaborative ‘hub’ for the London Design Festival since 2009, bringing the world of design to life with a rich variety of landmark projects, installations, talks and events, allowing a wide audience to engage with the Festival. From 13-21 September, the V&A will again host a range of exciting, experimental and immersive projects for the duration of the Festival and beyond. Now, in its 12th year, the London Design Festival is regarded as an essential part of the year’s cultural events and has helped to establish London as the design capital of the world. Dr Martin Roth, Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum said: “Each year, the V&A’s galleries are transformed by the thrilling installations and interventions created as part of the London Design Festival. The Museum is the Festival hub for

esigners Edward Barber OBE and Jay Osgerby OBE have collaborated with BMW to create a remarkable installation in the V&A’s Raphael Gallery. Sharing a fascination for the aesthetics of motion, aerospace, automotive and maritime engineering, Barber & Osgerby have

designed ‘Double Space for BMW’, a kinetic sculpture that creates an immersive experience for the viewer. Two reflective structures will be suspended in the centre of the gallery. Barber & Osgerby comment: “The dramatic scale and complexity of this commission makes it a real challenge and an amazing opportunity for us to further explore themes of movement and performance. We believe this collaboration with BMW will celebrate the paintings and the architecture by offering a totally new perspective on the world famous Raphael Gallery.” Ed Clark, Project Director at Arup, who are the engineering partner on the project, further summarised the challenges of installing in this unique space. “There is a purity and universality to the need for weight verses stiffness optimisation. An omnipresent and fundamental contradiction that dominates the engineering design of everything from cars, planes, bridges and buildings.”

THE WISH LIST WHAT I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED IS...

S

ir Terence Conran, the London Design Festival and the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) have invited 10 design legends to work with 10 emerging talents who have been asked to design and make something for their mentors that they have always wanted but had never been able to find. Such an open brief guarantees an extraordinary spread of design but the challenge was to produce each project in a single material – American

hardwood. This project celebrates the versatility of timber and the enormous variety that can be achieved with one material. The project is a collaborative fusion of design experience, young talent and craftsmanship. ‘The Wish List’ pairs up established designers including John Pawson, Amanda Levete, Zaha Hadid and Gareth Neal with young designers

they admire. The design teams developed their ideas together and the pieces were crafted and produced at the Benchmark studio and factory in Kintbury, West Berkshire. David Venables, European Director of the American Hardwood Export Council said: “It is a wonderful, one–

off opportunity, to shine a spotlight on emerging talent and at the same time give them the experience of working with some real legends.”

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 10 CANDELA BY DE PASS, MONTGOMERY & MCINTYRE

O

fficine Panerai is collaborating with a multi-disciplinary design team which includes product designer Felix de Pass, graphic designer Michael Montgomery and ceramicist Ian McIntyre to create an immersive project in the Tapestry Gallery, one of the V&A’s darkest spaces, due to the light sensitivity of the centuries old textiles on display.

Candela, the name of the installation, is also the term for a unit of luminous

intensity. Designed to hover just above the gallery floor, the piece comprises a rotary machine with 60 armatures which form a faceted clock face. As the armatures rotate, each unit charges with a burst of light and emits its energy as an afterglow, gradually fading back into the darkness. The installation has been delicately engineered using traditional and cutting edge materials to create a magical display that will beguile and delight the viewer against a backdrop of the V&A’s beautiful and rare medieval tapestries.

new structure entitled Crest, by Zaha Hadid Architects and commissioned by Melia Hotels International will provide an engaging feature across the pool in the centre of the V&A’s John Madejski Garden. The form explores the relationships between solid and void, surface and structure inherent within Hadid’s work. The structure has been built from a precision-

engineered pre-stressed aluminium shell of minimum thickness and will be assembled as a flat plate and then bent into shape in situ. Following its debut at the V&A during LDF, Crest will be installed within the ME Hotel in Dubai. Zaha Hadid says, “We envisaged a piece that would emerge from the centre of pool. He says: “I saw the glass cylinders and I was fascinated by how beautiful and simple they were. The cylinders are split open and flattened to take their intended shape as window glass. You could feel the strength and energy it took the glassblowers to make them.”

BESPOKE FURNITURE TIME How long did this project take? Eighteen weeks. We had a perfect shell to work with which really helped.

Is the furniture bespoke? The majority of the furniture is bespoke and was detailed beforehand. We had samples made of the dining chairs to ensure they were just the right size. The sofa is brilliantly comfortable. Around half of the rugs were made to measure.

BRIEF

InspIRatIon Design inspiration (any particular style, theme or influences With respect to Design?): The fresh, modern colour palette provides the perfect backdrop for the impressive collection of contemporary art, while traditional styling highlights the period features of the space.

What Was the brief from the client? The clients wanted a home that would suit their lifestyle. They have a fast paced life, and are often in and out of town. They thrive on the buzz of central London. They like to entertain, so the communal rooms had to combine glamour and family home comfort.

Louis Henri Mount Street, Mayfair

Favourite Favourite room The dining room. I like the repetition of the ceiling pattern, it’s so soothing. My favourite feature is the scattered reflection of the rug in the writing desk.

CHALLENGES What Was challenging? Getting the sofa into the apartment was a challenge as access to the property was limited, we couldn’t bring anything through the windows, and stopping traffic on Mount Street would not have been ideal. Nicky Drummond-Brady took our design and created a 10 piece jigsaw puzzle of a sofa which was easily carried in, tada!

>

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 10

Design Details for the Dining room? The blue and white colour palette used in the dining room was planned from the beginning. The client has a very exciting art and furniture collection, including the enormous steel clad sideboard from Talisman. The rug design was taken from the ceiling and enlarged to play with perspective. The beautiful bay windows are framed by cream silk curtains and blue sheers. This room had really dull shelving units and poor storage solutions, we updated the space by creating hidden storage inside the dado panelling. The bespoke dinner service from Harlequin was made in platinum leaf rather than the standard gold. We had napkins made that pulled out a blue detailing from the ceiling. Colour palette and the reasoning behind it: The apartment is in a listed building with beautiful ceilings and panelling. Choosing the right colour palette was extremely important as I wanted the abundant features to stand out. I used coach line detailing in the main rooms, adding a thin glossy yellow line to the ridge of the mouldings. The blue and white colour palette used in the dining room was planned from the beginning; it complements the client’s wonderful art and furniture collection.

70

for the thick, heavy curtains, which cocoon you in the apartment’s period features. The materials used in the master bedroom are pure indulgence; grass cloth walls, satin wool curtains, velvet wool carpet, velvet stool, and fur throw. The rugs in Mount Street were all made from 100% New Zealand wool in velvet or loop design to give the different levels and texture.

the beDroom The clients wanted a dark and restful master bedroom, with blackout curtains. We tried to create a private sanctuary, a place to unwind. The dark tones and soft textures create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It is pure indulgence: the grass cloth walls, satin curtains, velvet wool carpet, velvet stool, and fur throw create peace and quiet in central London.

the bathroom The bathroom windows, as with the corridor windows, look out onto a central service courtyard. With all those visible services, I wanted to design a window treatment that made the light well feel as if it was a green space. All the windows looking onto the courtyard feature custom-made blinds the mosaic in the shower room is from Bisazza on Sloane Avenue. The mosaic tiles gave the bathroom some much needed pattern the sheer romans match those around the rest of the light well, it was meant to sit as something that worked with the rest of the house and to give a warm aspect to the room, also bringing in the only colour into the space. > WWW.THEARTOFDESIGNMAGAZINE.COM

BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating for defining community hospital Finchley’s new Memorial Hospital and Walk-in Centre achieves a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating, meeting environmental and sustainability targets central to the development of a community hospital.

On the site of the former hospital it features Reynaers façade and fenestration systems throughout, contributing to the energy efficiency of this primary and social care facility for Barnet NHS Trust. A new community hospital designed by Murphy Phillips Architects it fully embraces and sets the standard for the new Department of Health guidance for flexible and adaptable healthcare facilities. The layout is based around generic modular clinical rooms and clusters reflecting the Health Building Notes for Primary and Community Care. Developed as part of a health campus, in conjunction with SHINE, the hospital delivers an environmentally responsible and sustainable contribution to the local surroundings and community.

Bespoke louvre and vent panel arrangements feature Reynaers ES

50 (Eco System) windows combining aesthetic design with energy efficiency. Three variants of CW 50 curtain wall were used including capped, structurally clamped and sloped with attic window inserts included. This ensures that central areas make the best use of natural light while automated openers aid ventilation and air circulation throughout the hospital.

Reynaers fire rated internal screens CS 77-FP E130/E160 are installed throughout key areas with access fire doors delivering safe emergency corridors should the building have to be cleared in the event of an emergency. Vision 50 doors, ideal for high usage, are installed on the main entrance and on busy thoroughfares providing excellent performance with low maintenance. It is also used effectively on internal screens throughout the hospital.

The four-storey development also contains examination and consultation rooms, 49 ensuite bedrooms and administration areas, pharmacy, GP practices, outpatients and

rehabilitation departments and an infusion suite. Completed on time and within budget the hospital has won a number of building accolades including a ‘Highly Commended’ at the 2014 CIBSE Awards and ‘Commended’ in the 2014 Civic Trust Awards.

“On its completion this was the largest hospital procured under the NHS Local Improvement Finance Trust,” said Paul Duffy, Reynaers UK Sales Director. “It is now seen as a model development for similar facilities throughout the country with its exemplar sustainability and environmental credentials in which Reynaers systems played a significant role.”

77

Fabricators on the project were Deepdale Solutions who are also a Reynaers Fire Partner and main contractors were Galliford Try South East. For full details contact: Reynaers Limited, Tel: 0121 421 1999, Fax: 0121 421 9797 or email: reynaersltd@reynaers.com.

understated luxury lifestyle New luxury beach club opens this summer in Rovinj, Croatia 79 A new beach club featuring a waterfront lounge bar has been launched by hotel company Maistra in an idyllic location in Rovinj, Istria – one of the sunniest spots in the Adriatic – bringing to Croatia the latest venture in understated luxury lifestyle.

>

With an emphasis on exclusivity and a contemporary aesthetic influenced by the nearby Hotel Monte Mulini, Istria’s first luxury hotel, and Hotel Lone, a member of Design Hotels™, Mulini Beach has been created to seamlessly extend the five-star service beyond the confines of these two sea-facing sister properties. Immersed in nature, the beachside venue is graced with views of the Golden Cape Forest Park and the crystal-clear waters of the Lone Bay, offering a peaceful, scenic setting for relaxation by day or night. Main facilities, including the bar, showers, and changing rooms, are housed in a low-rise pavilion-style structure built in natural stone and sheltered by a beautiful steel pergola-like roof. The low-profile exterior of the building, complemented with Mediterranean plants, has been designed to blend harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. The Mulini Beach bar, with a 50-seat open-air dining area, will transform in the evenings into a low-key cocktail bar, complete with lounge furniture spilling onto the terrace, candlelit tables, and twice-weekly events. Adding to the laid-back atmosphere, ambient music specially curated for the beach will combine with live sessions by resident DJ Rea, who has performed at several well-known international music festivals.

Hospitals can be very intimidating places, especially for children. Most children’s hospitals try to make the environment as inviting as possible, such as by employing primary coloured geometric shapes or introducing aquariums. The pattern of visits to children’s hospitals is changing. Since the treatment of certain childhood-onset diseases can now be managed through till adulthood, the age of children visiting hospitals is increasing and families are spending longer periods in hospital. To cater for these changing patterns, some children’s hospitals are adopting more adventurous and sophisticated design interventions. In Columbus, Ohio, the newly expanded Nationwide Children’s Hospital by FKP Architects and museum interior architects Ralph Appelbaum Associates, has taken on board these changing requirements and delivered an exceptionally ambitious project. The interiors, which are largely inspired by nature, are imaginative and absorbing. At the same time, the size and facilities of patient rooms have been dramatically improved to accommodate family members.

82

Altro Whiterock Digiclad offers the option of digitally printed design on wall surfaces, creating impactful and creative graphics. This is achieved by reproducing a photographic image or Vector Art over a whole wall. Using 2.5mm thick Altro Whiterock as its medium, the hard-coat technology of Altro Whiterock Digiclad has scratch-resistant properties for added surface protection. This makes it ideal for environments where durability is paramount. Nationwide Children’s Hospital demonstrates a rigorous understanding of the beneficial effects that thoughtful and inspiring design can have - hopefully sweetening the experience and aiding recovery.

April trained at London’s Inchbald School of Design and at Sotheby’s, and has over 20 years’ experience in interior design.

Collector’s Townhouse >

In the summer of 2011, April Russell was commissioned to carry out the renovation and interior design of a stunning mansion house in the heart of Belgravia, renowned as one of the best addresses in London, and owned by a leading figure in the banking world. The client had a vast collection of stunning artwork thanks to his wife, a renowned collector of modern art and sculpture, and wanted his home to reflect this. Interested in updating their home to match their maturing tastes, the client’s brief was twofold, combining architecture and interior design. The architectural brief included a reconfiguration of the layout, both in new spaces and old; to create a striking and unified look to the Grade II listed

property. Meanwhile, the interior design brief was to contemporise, whilst retaining the original listed regency features, and enhancing the client’s extensive collection of modern artwork and sculpture. April said: “As we grow, it is only natural that our tastes change, and that we will want to update our homes to reflect this. Early in my client’s married life they collected antiques and 18c and 19c paintings. When they were re-thinking their interiors, they were also rethinking their art collection. The new works obtained through this project comprise mostly of new young artists, so it was important that the interior design remain fresh to reflect this.” The project required substantial remodelling of the lower ground floor, building down to create a sub-basement for a new state of the art cinema room and, below this, a cellar with a wine vault. Existing features within the property were magnified, with half-landings extended outwards at the rear to give extra space for the growing art collection. Outside, permission was obtained to construct a small bespoke Orangery structure, creating a link from the drawing room to the external terrace.

On the ground floor a new entrance was made to the dining area, a skylight was added over the dining table, and the kitchen was moved up to the mezzanine level. April said: “As the house is in central London, I avoided pastel colours, instead choosing rich tones on the entertaining floors. These colours were chosen because they blend well with the art, allowing it to really speak for itself. “Lighting and paint finishes were paid special attention to with textured walls and unique effects panels used to add interest. The

kitchen and dining area have innovative quartz surfaces and metal finishes for a really beautiful, unexpected finish. We used

“Each room had its own personality, and its own identity. My favourite was the cinema room, where the walls were covered in fabric to give a textured, tactile finish, whilst also providing soundproofing. Stunning and practical!” April has previously described her work as building on a canvas, layer upon layer. With this project she deconstructed the layers, stripping back the house to what it should be – a space both textural and raw, offset by an exquisite collection of artwork for an illuminating finish.

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 10 SCHOOL ORDERS SECOND BESPOKE TWINFIX CANOPY St Mary Magdalene School in Milton Keynes were so impressed with the first canopy that Twinfix designed, built and installed for them that they very quickly requested another! Like many schools, the staff had some particular requirements to be accommodated: they wanted to include a pathway adjacent to the school at one end and they were keen for the children to be able to use the canopy whatever the weather. With some 24 years’ experience the Twinfix Technical Team had no problems designing a canopy to suit both their needs and their budget. An obstruction-free footpath was created by offsetting the uprights nearest to the building some 1.3 metres in from the roof edge. The pathway was then defined by installing a colourful fence with a gate access, creating a secure area for play. The 3.5 metre wide duo-pitch canopy is nearly 20 metres long and is glazed with 16mm opal multiwall polycarbonate glazed into the Twinfix Multi-Link-Panel NF. The opal tint was chosen in order to help reduce solar heat build-up and maintain a comfortable temperature within the canopy whilst the blue powder coated aluminium frame will not rust should it get the odd scratch and it should never require repainting. As we write this we are now back on site for the third time – this time to install a walkway to connect two of the school’s buildings! 124 The English House light fittings are equally at home in every period of building from Tudor manor to minimalist modern studio, and from intimate rooms to large public spaces. These light fittings are handmade in England. They have a classical simplicity, and have been designed by Charles Morris, who has a national reputation for architecture which combines the best qualities of traditional form and materials with a subtle contemporary touch. The English House lights draw on a tradition of the Arts & Crafts movement of a century ago, when architects such as Lutyens and Voysey would design every part of their buildings, including light fittings. Like them, Charles Morris is a member of the Art Workers Guild. It is this Arts & Crafts connection which defines their robust construction and simple, honest form. This is a unique range of designs which, by avoiding a known style, draws upon beauty of line, which is timeless and feels artofdesign1/2page:98 27/1/14 09:17 Page 1 right wherever it is found. THE MODERN WALLCOVERING SOLUTION THAT’S BOTH DURABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

Glasstex, is the most widely used fibre glass wallcovering in the UK, giving attractive pattern textures, unlimited colour schemes, Class ‘0’ fire certification and virtually unbeatable hardwearing durability.

126

Many hotel groups have used Glasstex in public areas and bedrooms. It’s not just national hotel groups who have used Glasstex, many independent hoteliers have used the product.

Glasstex is ecologically sound, and truly comes into its own in Healthcare, Nursing Home and hospital environments. The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is the largest cancer treatment centre in Europe, this means there is a very large volume of people entering The Christie on a daily basis. Bob Higginbotham, Head of Facilities Management at The Christie said: The main corridors are in the older part of the hospital and as such have seen much repair and patching up over the years and at best were looking tired. The brief to our architects was to come with a solution that would be durable, decorative, cost effective and minimise disruption both now and on a maintenance basis. They came up with the Glasstex system, and this has turned out to more than fit the criteria. The ease of application meant that the corridors could be decorated quickly on a night shift without causing disruption to the day to day running of the hospital.

Kings of Weymouth Mrs L King Managing Director of the group said: We have used Glasstex for many years in our hotels, bars and restaurants. The product is excellent, it is exceptionally hard wearing so ideal for busy public areas but also suitable for the bedrooms.

The finished system has completely upgraded the corridors and given a modern and pleasant look to what are probably the busiest areas in the hospital, and facilitating ease of maintenance. Glasstex, Designed to offer a lifetime of pattern, colour and paint finish options.

PANORAMIC VIEWS OF LONDON FROM PARAMOUNT HOUSE For many years 162-170 Wardour Street was the London headquarters of Paramount Studios, located at the heart of the capital’s music, film and advertising industry. However, in 2011 this seven-storey building within Soho’s Conservation Area, was acquired by award winning residential developer, Amazon Property, with the intention of converting the 21,500 sq ft mixed-use office/ retail space into residential apartments, making this one of the capital’s most sought after office-to-residential conversions. The internal reconfiguration and refurbishment has created 15 high specification apartments, including a luxury penthouse with panoramic views of the London skyline. Many of the original attractive features of this 1930’s designed building have been retained, including the metal casement frames with lead light glazing and timber sash windows. However, as with any city centre location offering a 24:7 society, noise has to be effectively contained if a peaceful environment is to be achieved. A solution was found using Selectaglaze’s bespoke range of secondary windows. The frames have high performance seals and are tailor made to ensure the tightest fit.

128

Visit us at 100% Design 2014 Stand No. E17

Independent acoustic tests demonstrate very significant levels of noise attenuation, typically 45dB, and the glazing also provides much improved thermal insulation. This, together with the removal of draughts, leads to increased comfort and reduced energy demand. Over 200 horizontal and vertically sliding windows were produced in a matt black finish to complement the interior design and toughened safety glass was used throughout.

The windows are fully fabricated in the factory which allows rapid installation and Selectaglaze worked closely with contractor ISG to meet a phased programme and be part of a successful and attractive development. Founded in 1966 and a Royal Warrant Holder since 2004 Selectaglaze Ltd. has considerable experience of working in buildings of all styles including Listed and traditional. Clive Christian no. 1 for women Costing 90% less than the most expensive perfume in the world is by Clive Christian again. Clive Christian No. 1 has a scent for men and for women. What makes it expensive is the bottle, made out of crystal, it has a neck that is made out of 24-karat gold-plated sterling silver. Aside from that, it is made from a combination of bergamot, orris, sandalwood, natural gum resin, vanilla, and ylang ylang extract. But since these ingredients are not available year round, it is not so easy to come up with this brilliant fragrance. A PLACE, A WATCH, A LEGEND The Racing Drivers Watch From Daytona to the Cosmo Graph Daytona, a Passion For Speed The tradition of epic motor racing in Daytona persisted on the beach until the late 1950s. It has continued on the Daytona International Speedway, a veritable temple of speed built in 1959 as one of the first Super Speedways in the world. Every year, this gigantic amphitheatre of modern times, 4 kilometres in circumference, with 31-degree banked turns which allow breathtaking acceleration, hosts automobile races as thrilling and prestigious as the Daytona 500 and the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The most experienced racing drivers rate the latter, 24-hour endurance race – the American equivalent of the 24 Hours of Le Mans – as one of the most difficult in the world.

Daytona International Speedway inherited one of the most formidable histories of speed and motor racing, and gave its name to the chronograph Rolex dedicated in 1963 to racing drivers and motor sport enthusiasts: the COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA. An innovative chronograph noted for the excellent legibility of its functions thanks to highly contrasting counters and its tachymetric scale, which was no longer on the dial but positioned on the bezel. Its sporty appearance, as usual for Rolex watches, was the result of functional considerations intended to respond to the wearer’s needs and to make the watch the best instrument for measuring time and speed on the racing track.
