Features This project had several constraints, most notably the house’s location in an avalanche zone. To manage that risk, the architect chose to create a green rooftop, a solution rarely used in this alpine valley. A heat pump handles climate control, and the entire house is very well insulated. In addition, Dag needed to coexist harmoniously with several nearby old Swiss raccards.A raccard is a small cabin used as a granary or shed.

Materials and organization Dag is built from glass, metal and traditional larch wood; the wood was stained to coordinate with the nearby raccards. With obvious Scandinavian inspiration, Dag is both warm and unpretentious, stripped down to essentials. Its large picture windows create a strong link with the alpine forest environment in which it is nestled. The main open-concept living space makes for easy living, in tune with the spirit of the place. chevallier-architectes.fr 30

LEADERS IN IT CONSULTING

32

Engineering, construction and design companies often function in environments of uncertainties due to the size of projects and other external factors. These elements make it increasingly difficult for them to operate and achieve their objectives. Various functions involved in an engineering and construction project make it highly complex and risky. The complexity and risks increase in a greater proportion than the increase in the size of the project.

The entire cycle that begins with the identification and writing of the proposals and further includes collaboration for the project, identification of suppliers and contractors, project control and execution and financial transaction management are all covered by Oracle’s solutions. The solution integrates key functions and can be used for several domains, however it delivers superior value to the construction and engineering niches.

For such companies it is critical to have clear objectives, predefined interim goals or milestones and robust processes. These elements require meticulous planning and dexterous implementation. Oracle is the leading technology for the construction industry and Primavera Solutions for Engineering and Construction is a comprehensive application that plays a vital role; right from identification of projects till the contract is executed in its entirety. The application solution encompasses every function that is a part of an engineering and construction project.

The Oracle Suite is an integration of applications, servers, cloud computing, data centres, storage solutions and other key elements that are synchronised together to generate a synergy for achieving high quality results. These key elements are integrated to optimise them to deliver the best achievable value to businesses and mitigate the risks involved in such highly complex projects.

The Spinning Jenny “The Spinning Jenny, a restaurant and bar in Manchester Airport, is inspired directly from the famous textile machine of the 1700s, created in the nearby county of Lancashire. The rows of industrial Tagg stools and benches, paired with workbench style tables and exposed brick walls brings an elegant touch of the old textile mills of Northen England in the Industrial Revolution. Chairs from our spindle-back range (Lena, Hula, and Tarantella) contribute to the artisanal, crafted, and quality feel of a bygone era. Our Mel chair and butcher-block table tops lend a contemporary sophistication, as do the touches of colour splashed around the space.

More shade thanks to optimum power distribution

38 markilux pergola with front support posts and especially large projection

Once a decorative colonnade and trellis for lush green vines, the pergola is now a formative element of modern architecture. The new markilux pergola 110/210, which is based on the tried-and-tested technology of the markilux 8800 conservatory awning, is no exception. The slimline and airy exterior is an ornament for any terrace, not least because of the elegant side caps of the new conservatory awning. However, the compelling argument for the new model is the especially large projection of up to six metres.

optimum stability for the entire awning system. This means that there is reduced traction on the wall mounting, as well as increased safety in high winds. This means that very large areas can be shaded. The system is also suitable for wall constructions that are considered unsuitable for mounting articulated awnings or require highly technical work.

Additional attachment with round supports The integrated tensioning system featuring ultra tearresistant conveyor belts and strong gas pistons drive the front profile smoothly and quietly over a lateral guide track system. The consistent pressure of the gas pistons stretches the cover optimally. The markilux pergola is made entirely from powdercoated aluminium. This includes front support posts, which are securely attached to the guide tracks and fixed in place on a concrete foundation creating

LIGHTWAY Lord of the Daylight Lack of natural daylight in the room? Lightway crystal sun tunnels bringing healthy daylight into your home or workplace. Lightway brings daylight into buildings with its 3 main parts: • On the roof or side wall is a crystal glass dome or daylight collector • The tube, with sterling silver as one of the reflective layers, reflects daylight into dark rooms • The daylight diffuser column, made from crystal glass, effectively spreads daylight around the room

CRYSTAL

Lightway sun tunnels can bring daylight into rooms where there are no windows in various ways. Lightway collects daylight from the sky either from the roof or from the outer wall of the building. It then transmits healthy sunlight down into rooms where natural light is ordinarily not available during the day. These are the inner rooms of a building where windows cannot be installed. Lightway even brings light into underground rooms.

Lightway Crystal Glass roof dome

Lightway F400 side wall daylight collector Typical placement of light collector Lightway F400 on the exterior wall of the building. Under the special glass one can see the main mirror inside with a layer of pure silver, which collects crystal-clear daylight and sends it through the smaller mirror, into the sun tunnel tubing and into the building. Healthy sunlight thus enters deep into the home, office, or even a shop. Lightway sun tunnels bring light to places where light from windows cannot reach. The outside diameter of the light collector on the building’s exterior is 550mm in diameter. But the sun tunnel tubing itself is a mere 156mm or 220mm in diameter, ensuring easy passage through the opening in the wall and worry-free passage of tubing under the roof and into interior rooms.

The head of the Lightway sun tunnel is made from crystal glass. It collects sunlight from the sky and transmits it into the tube leading the sunlight from the roof into rooms inside a dark house. And, because it is made of crystal glass, dust does not stick to it and nor does it turn brown or yellow like as plastic domes would.

Lightway Galaxy roof daylight harvester Lightway Galaxy 1200. Typical placement of sunlight collector on the roof. The active mirrored surface is covered with special glass. Sunlight is then led into the building itself through a 520mm diameter tube. Meanwhile, the collector surface has a diameter of 1,200 mm, which ensures huge performance and plenty of daylight inside the building.

Lighting …

design in a box or in a day? The fast, new ways to design beautiful interiors with light….yourself ! or with a friendly designer? We caught up with international lighting designer Phil Gardner in the chocolate box beauty of South Shropshire, where he now lives (a long way from London or even Saudi Arabia where he has many loyal clients) because after 20 years of professional design he is sure the World wants to access skills and experience in new ways. If you always realized the difference between a nice interior design and World class interior was the light, then you, like most people considered employing a lighting designer…for a brief moment, for perhaps a google search and then reality set in, or the project moved so quickly. But the problem is that “niggling” doubt and that questions always keep coming back to the lighting decisions, which you know have to be “just right”.

42

“It took me years to discover the simple thread all my customers had in common” says Phil, “they want a home they can be proud of”, and they know light has an important role. It sounds simple when you say it, but all clients have a different set of circumstances, and yet the young couple with two young kids a semi and do all the work themselves, to the retired businessman in his estate want the same thing. So why should lighting design always be in the same size package? Firstly, there is the new “Lighting design in a Box” … the step by step system for creating your own beautiful interiors with light. This suits you ideally if you, are self build, self renovating making all or lots of the decisions your self and happy to commit your time. It maybe you do things over time, room by room, maybe you have an interest in adding lighting to your skills for a career… Secondly, there is “Design in a Day”. Visit Phil & Michelle in their 300 year old farmhouse in South Shropshire, be inspired by the beauty and lack of phone/ e-mails as you give your dedicated time to the project and so does the design team around you . At the end of 1 passionate day leave with all the plans, drawings and specification of all the lights…fantastic for the busy people who want to be consulted on every decision as attention to detail is vital but you are busy and having this done and perfected in a day moves the project on perfectly. > Entirely dedicated to living together, the Center Parcs forest cottages Le Bois aux Daims are treated as warm nests where we meet with family and friends to share moments of relaxation and games. The general project conept is a reinterpretation of the archetypal country house, cabin and cottage. 4 major themes are declined in the cottages : - Play of light and shadows : a large shadow of the profile of a wolf projected on a wall in the children’s and shadows of trees on the printed textile sofas. •

The wooden construction set.

The herbarium : master bedroom.

The source, the well : The sink plays the role of a well in the bathroom and other touches throughout the cottage such as the living room armchair playing the role of a picnic basket.

Using natural stone to bring colour to your home The beauty of using organic materials in your home is that they bring an element of calm and peace into your space and natural stone is perfect for achieving this. Using natural stone it is possible to enhance spaces and highlight beautiful aesthetics that can’t be achieved with other man made materials, here are our top five tiles for use in projects. Heritages flagstone tiles are incredibly hardwearing and come in a variety of colours including black, grey and olive. These natural tiles have an ‘aged’ look and are ideal for use as floor coverings and create a distinguished classical look that complements every environment. The variety of colours means that these tiles work with a number of colour schemes and property styles.

52

Tumbled Limestone tiles give an antique feel and add warmth to your home. The mid-cream to gold colouring in Jerusalem Antique Gold makes it perfect for use in bathrooms as it is incredibly warm and relaxing. With an antique tumbled finish these tiles create a feeling of elegance and character to your finished room, the soft, neutral colours work well with all interiors. It is a perfect tile for use in kitchens and bathrooms as there are a variety of finishes available and the colour palette ranges from a creamy white through a soft grey blue. It is a very practical and durable stone that can be easily maintained, making it very popular for properties that want to use materials that will achieve a light, airy and fresh finish. With natural tonal formations this 3D highly textural interlocking wall panel is a unique way to make a statement, creating a focal point in rooms. Brushed black slate tiles with their riven finish have a gentle textured surface and are a deep black so give a rich decadent finish to walls and floors. Perfect for creating a natural earthy environment, whilst still giving a pristine and modern finish. Suitable for domestic and commercial use. THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 15 The moment they entered the room one look was enough, they could tell that it was love at first glance and that without doubt there was an instant attraction. Your design and build quality is often assessed by first impressions and what better way to set the right note than by your choice of interior door and door assemblies. By choosing Vicaima products, with a reputation for design flair and innovation, it can speak volumes about your own values and specification and demonstrate the passion you have for quality products. Vicaima offers Housing designers, developers and contractors real scope to put their own stamp on things with imaginative options in quality veneered and laminated finishes. Design and performance solutions are constantly evolving to meet the needs of an ever changing market and to inspire fresh ideas that present real differentiation for interior living standards. Two recent examples where Vicaima’s contemporary design ideas has drawn plenty of admiring glances, is in the introduction of the Dekordor 3D and the Naturdor Oak stained ranges.

Dekordor 3D Grey

Vicaima’s Dekordor 3D embossed face finished doors have really made a big impression, with their highly tactile yet surprisingly durable face finish. Its striking horizontal embossed surface cries out to be touched and yet it offers excellent abrasion and moisture resistance and is so easy to clean. Used widely in apartments and luxury living accommodation, Dekordor 3D presents a modern door option with real uniformity of colour and texture. Available in 5 popular finishes including Grey and a recently introduced Oak.

54

For specifiers keen to reflect the recent trend for stained Oak floors and kitchens, Vicaima have also developed an exciting selection of real Oak veneered doors with the added charm of staining to bring out the natural beauty of wood in new and less common hues, such as chocolate, hazel and grey, in addition to limed oak, wenge and walnut. The faces, which are available in either a textured or smooth finish, have been enhanced with a matt lacquered stain finish which requires no further treatment once fitted. Truly different, this range will add charm to both modern and traditional homes.

Portaro door and frame assembly

No matter which design takes your fancy, it is worth remembering that door and frame go hand in hand. So a completely matching door assembly like the Vicaima Portaro system avoids the need for oddly painted frames and ensures you have perfect harmony. KAT – Windows Doors and Roofs in Aluminium, PVCu and Timber Established in 1998 KAT entered a niche market opportunity and became the UK’s first national supplier of specialist, readymade PVCu patio doors. The company grew very fast thanks to marketing and manufacturing skills, combined with outstanding customer care. It was important not to be a ‘jack of all windows and doors’ but to be recognised by customers as true specialists. That legacy is still in place today. In 2001, KAT launched a PVCu box sash window into what is a very highly specialised niche, which has enhanced the reputation as a bespoke manufacturer of specialist door and window systems. David Richards is now Chairman of the KAT group of building products companies. Under his stewardship the company has continued to flourish as the demand for specialist windows and doors has increased. There are now 4 KAT manufacturing plants, all making high-end, bespoke products.

In 2007, the KAT team recognised that another niche sector was fast developing in aluminium and they grasped early on that to be successful, manufacturing companies in this area have to really understand their customers’ needs and be able to demonstrate to people that they are true experts. The KAT aluminium bi-folding door has been a revelation and the company now has 2 specialist aluminium factories, in Macclesfield and Newhaven, dedicated to aluminium bifold door and aluminium triple track patio door manufacture. PVCu and Aluminium sales have continued to grow and in 2011, the company acquired a small Joinery manufacturing specialist, Joinerman. KAT is probably the only company in the UK manufacturing ‘made to measure’ bifolding doors and patio doors in Aluminium, PVCu and Timber, in addition to Timber and PVCu box sash windows. The company is circa 75 people strong today and boasts a number of the extended Richards’ family and many local families, most of whom are long-serving team members. The company has a very low staff turnover and is proud to be an Investor in People, in the truest sense.

INDUSTRY URGENTLY NEEDS CENTRALISED BODY FOR ALL CURRENT, PENDING AND PLANNED LEGISLATION AND NEW REGULATIONS….. Tony Gittings, of water heating product manufacturer Rinnai, argues that the industry is in dire need of a central body or council to co-ordinate the burgeoning weight of new and pending standards, legislation, Codes of Practice. This includes emerging support technologies such as BiM which needs clear and concise communication to the marketplace. Within the next 10 years the HVAC industry could change out of all recognition as we face an unprecedented set of challenges here in the UK and Europe. The industry is facing the relentless drive to ever greater energy efficiency and lower emissions – all in line with the UK’s legally binding carbon reduction target of 80% CO2 (on 1990 levels) by 2050.

ISSUE 15 - 2015

The UK government and European commission’s growing agenda for the enablement of the greening of industry has resulted in the emergence of new Building Regulations, green technology accelerators such as RHI and the commercial green deal. Also part of this is the introduction of new technologies, such as BiM, designed to unlock more efficient ways of working at all stages of the project life-cycle. And there is more – the implementation of Energy labelling to energy related products across the HVAC industry is currently underway. The UK and northern European markets are amongst some of the most heavily legislated in the world when it comes to the HVAC industry.

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 15

>

The regulatory horizon will see amendments to the Building Regulations; the introduction of energy labels for water heating equipment; the tiered approach to emission reductions taking full effect from 2015 and beyond (under the guidance of ERP) thus continually driving efficiencies and emission reductions. There is such a blizzard of mandatory information that it is a job in itself to keep up with it all – and all in addition to maintaining and servicing existing customers and, winning new contracts. There is a pressing need, I believe, for complete and transparent harmonisation of key product parameters and measurements to ensure simple and accurate communication. This need can be answered in the form of a centralised body – or council of existing bodies and organisations - which can co-ordinate all the information swirling around on industry topics which are of such major importance. The body or council whichever wishes to take up the baton should represent the information needs of the contractor, consultant, end-user, and property owner and manager. There is an overwhelming need for one recognised source delivering clear and concise information on all current and impending legislation. Manufacturing corporations can also make a difference bearing in mind

that the marketplace needs ready-togo products that obviously meet and exceed all existing legislation as well as pending legislation and new practises. This is where innovation is critical and manufacturers should truly commit to the research and development of new products and methods to make installation quicker and easier, and product performance better and more efficient. We cannot continue trying to wring the last vestige of life from modes of seriously outdated provisions of water heating in the commercial

and residential arenas, not in today’s mercurial marketplace. I believe that the industry needs a single body for all the information needs. We would be readily prepared to financially support such an initiative. We can supply a value-added solution for today and the future – now.

72 TV Chef Rosemary Shrager Has A Taste For Granite Transformations Colourful chef, writer and TV personality Rosemary Shrager has chosen top quality Granite Transformations materials for new kitchen worktops and resurfacing counters, tiled areas and floors at her celebrated Cookery School and nearby Patisserie shop. Although her business premises and Granite Transformations’ UK headquarters are all located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Rosemary actually came across the brand when presenting regular cooking slots on ‘The Alan Titchmarsh Show’ and discovered the agglomerate materials’ ‘forget about it’ practicality and luxurious good looks. The fact that existing surfaces could be refaced within a single day, without dust, debris or inconveniencing customers, was also a considerable bonus for Rosemary and her busy culinary and retail operations, where disruption of trade would cost money and goodwill. Rosemary Shrager is delighted that Granite Transformations’ agglomerate and mosaic finishes are robust enough for commercial use, beautiful enough to enhance the existing decor and sufficiently quick to install that normal business can continue without a break. www.granitetransformations.co.uk

THE ART OF DESIGN ISSUE 15 Roma Contracts recently completed another high-end residential stone fit out at a beautiful project on the outskirts of Wimbledon, SW19. Our close relationship with the interior designer who was nominated by the client enabled us to have a strong input in the early stages of design and material selection. The two prominent stones selected for the ground floor entrance hall and atrium were ‘Rene Beige’ an Italian limestone used for the main field and ‘Cappucino’ which is a Canadian granite, used predominantly for borders and skirtings as well as the main staircase. Roma were also commissioned to design a circular inlaid pattern to the centre of the atrium using satin finished stainless steel flat bars and a third stone known to most as ‘filleto dark’. The linear effect of this material, cut into 8 circular segments and surrounded by two rings of steel, sitting directly below the centre of the 3-storey atrium, creates a stunning effect.
