Surface Rug, designed by Staffan Tollg책rd for JAB Anstoetz, 3.3m x 2.8m, Pure Wool

Rugs that scratch beneath the surface...

Some rugs tell powerful stories. The artisans whose hands weave, loop, cut and our natural world; the tarnishing of materials over time; the beauty of the industrial and organic world around us. These are the stories told by the new collection of rugs designed by Staffan Tollg책rd for JAB Anstoetz.

Casamanara was hired for this project at the very beginning of its conception, in order to design all the interior and exterior layouts, ceilings, floor patterns, doors and woodwork, as well as the selection of all the materials and finishes and fixtures, to complement the architecture. All of the decoration was also designed and supplied by Casamanara, including a lot of custom made pieces. The house sits on an incredible piece of land with uninterrupted views of the sea. The client’s aim was to create a very special property, entirely devoted to short term rentals, but different from the myriad of houses one can already find on the market. They wanted the house to provide the same kind of exclusive feeling one would experience while renting a yacht; for it to be the sort of destination that would not just be sought after for its location, but also for its amenities and the refinement of its Interior Design. The proportions of the reception rooms are extremely generous, so the main focus was to provide a life and a sense of “home” to the whole space. Most of the pieces used for the decoration were custom designed by Piero Manara, to fit and lend a sense of balance to the space surrounding them. “Our main goal was to provide a sense of luxurious comfort without being overwhelming,” says Piero Manara, “but with numerous complementing textures and finishes which would create a sense of surprise over and over again.” “We wanted this to be a place for ‘show’ as much as ‘retreat’,” adds Debla, “So, when the magnificence of the surrounding nature becomes too much, one can retreat inside and feel sheltered and cared for. In short, we wanted to create the sort of house one would look forward to coming back to!”

NeoLith Latest News Neolith’s Sintered Compact Surface Available in 14 Full-Body Colors and 30 Digital Designs 16

Neolith, a brand of all-natural, premium sintered compact surfaces for kitchen and bathroom worktops, flooring, interior wall cladding applications and exterior facades, has extended its Collections to include 30 stone, wood and metal decors enhanced with Neolith Digital Design (NDD) printing. Together with 14 full-body colours Neolith provides architects and designers with a comprehensive offering of ontrend designs combined with the inherent strength of sintered compact surfaces. Neolith comes in 14 full-body colours, which carry the colour and pattern through the entire thickness of the slab. From bright orange, green and blue, to deep browns and stone-inspired grays, such models are ideal for thin worktops with no stylistic need for mitering. Neolith slabs created with NDD are a great option for creating elaborated details and sleek designs. NDD is Neolith’s innovative digital decoration technology that prints intricate designs onto the Neolith product, allowing for previously unseen design possibilities and new finishes. The design options are endless, ranging from the industrial shine of the Iron collection to the detailed woodgrain design of Timber, and are virtually indistinguishable from their natural counterparts. Also used for the Classtone collection, NDD gives Neolith’s signature slabs the aesthetic quality and realistic look of marble with the added strength and dependability of a sintered compact surface. Neolith products are available in Europe through a large network of distributors. To find a distributor or to learn more, visit www.neolith.com.

QUARTZFORMS Absolute White

Precision Engineering Engineered stone specialist QUARTZFORMS offers Italian flair combined with German manufacturing.

QUARTZFORMS Veined Michelangelo Available in 12, 20, and 30mm thicknesses, QF Distribution Ltd offers three finishes - Polished, Spacco, Opaco - ideal for creating stylish worktops, tiles and splashbacks.

“Building a brand and establishing trust in your product is never an easy process, especially when you are not first to market,” explains Richard Barrett, sales director of QF Distribution, the exclusive distributor of QUARTZFORMS. “But, nearly two years on, I can confidently say that QUARTZFORMS has established itself in the UK market and we are increasing sales month on month.” But, in a competitive market what makes this product stand out from the crowd? Richard believes the product's success lies in its advanced engineering techniques found in QUARTZFORMS’ German manufacturing facilities. “We use a 93% pure quartz compound. It is one of nature's hardest minerals,” explains Richard. “But, to make this superior product even better, we take this natural material on step further. Thanks to the Bretonstone® patented vacuum vibro-compression system, the machine gives the material a high-impact resistance and a dense, compacted surface finish, which can't be guaranteed with natural stone. We also use 36 polishing heads to create a higher gloss level and consistent, high quality finish.” This high level of manufacturing has resulted in a wide range of innovative scratch, heat and stain resistant designs taking the KBB industry by storm. And, with over 50 designs in stock and readily available from Essex-based QF Distribution Ltd, it is clear to see why QUARTZFORMS designs are proving popular with KBB designers, architects and retailers.

QUARTZFORMS Veined Africa With over 50 styles in stock, QUARTZFORMS has created a range of aesthetically appealing surfaces, which offer an equal balance between classical elegance and contemporary style.

Richard Barrett adds, “At QF Distribution Ltd we aim to meet the needs of industry professionals with an old-fashioned approach to doing business. To us, every one of our customers is a VIP.” For more information on QUARTZFORMS or to request a sample, visit www.qfdistribution.co.uk or call 01245 243929.

Chelsea

TOWNHOUSE

This townhouse in Chelsea was designed for a celebrity couple who wanted a calm and understated home. Maurizio opted for dark wood furniture, a soft colour scheme and luxury finishes such as cashmeres and silks. MPD London created many bespoke pieces of furniture for the house, including the headboard in the master bedroom and the desk in the bay window that complements the iconic Ralph Lauren Duke Bar. One-off pieces were paired with antiques, among them the 1960s chandelier in the living room. With accessorising kept to a minimum in the garden, hallway and bathrooms, the overall effect is one of uncluttered luxury.

Brief

The client’s brief was to re-create the Ralph Lauren lifestyle as seen in the Mayfair collection (Spring 2007). The couple was moving out of a contemporary flat which was too cold and impersonal for their tastes and they wanted a more mature look in their first marital home. The brief was to create something classic and stylish modeled on the Ralph Lauren look that was also glamorous and feminine. The client requested a fast turn-around and minimum disruption.

Design

Two sitting areas were incorporated into the living area, one in front of the fireplace for drinks above which is hung a beautiful and glamorous antique chandelier from circa1960, and the second in front of the TV. An Art Deco styled mahogany bar in the corner conceals a collection of cocktail accessories and spirits for mixing drinks. Although the furniture is dark and substantial the colour scheme is soft and a careful assortment of accessories lighten the overall impact of the room. The walls are Skimming Stone by Farrow and Ball and the antique blue and white oriental pots are imported from New York. The Venetian mirror and chandelier bring a feminine touch to the design. The desk in the bay window is designed by MPD to compliment the iconic Ralph Lauren Duke Bar. The room has a colonial feel to it, with stained floorboards, plantation shutters and campaignstyle chairs.

22

The master bedroom has a glamorous silver black colour scheme and generous silk curtains. The distressed finish on the wardrobe and the striking headboard are both custom designs. The white leather Poliform bed was a starting point for the guest bedroom design. MPD matched this with soft grey furnishings, cashmere curtains from De Le Cuona and a silk and wool mix carpet that make the room a tranquil haven in which to pamper and unwind. The bedroom is clutter-free to create a feeling of space and calm. New cabinetry provides ample space for storage. The third bedroom was converted into a nursery for their new baby girl. Through areas such as the hallway and staircase were minimally styled and bathrooms were kept simple and fresh.

GET SET TO CELEBRATE 25 YEARS

OF NEC FURNITURE SHOWS Organisers of the all-new January Furniture Show are getting ready to celebrate 25 years of furniture shows at the NEC with a ‘Silver Jubilee’ party.

26

2015 marks the 25th consecutive year that a trade furniture show has been held at the NEC, Birmingham, making the event one of the most established in the industry. To mark the

occasion, Laraine Janes and Theresa Raymond, directors of The January Furniture Show Ltd, who are organising the event for the first time, are hosting a Silver Jubilee drinks party at the show. They said: “We’re delighted with the level of support for the show - 99% of the space is now sold.” Support for the show comes from right across

the furnishings industry, prompting organisers to expand the space available into a fifth hall – The Pavilion. A highlight of The Pavilion will be a specially themed café area by a top British designer. Said Theresa Raymond: “We have a strong team that is working hard to make this show a success and to meet exhibitors’ and visitors’ requirements. The show brings buyers and exhibitors together at the perfect time for planning and ordering for the year – and 25 years of success at the NEC is

evidence that this is the venue and timing the trade want for their main show. The brainchild of industry exhibition stalwarts Stephen Richards and Phil Soar, the first NEC show in 1990 created a unique platform for the furnishings sector at a location that ensured it was a truly national event. Since then the show has been organised by a number of companies under a number of names – but has always been held at the Birmingham NEC in January. It is set to remain the biggest furniture event in the UK next year.

Keramag Design is an exclusive brand for designers and specifiers working on high-end private properties and commercial projects. Their collections combine timeless elegance with progressive design and an exceptional appreciation of detail, to produce truly distinctive bathrooms. The newest collection in Keramag Design’s portfolio is Xeno², informed by the trend identified by the company as ‘soft geometry’ in bathroom ceramics and was designed by Robin Platt, who has a pedigree of successful design collaborations including the luxury German tableware brand Rosenthal, Lufthansa, Kozial and Versace. Xeno² is his debut collection for Keramag Design. Xeno² explores a wet/dry, hard/soft language in ceramics and the final look is as if the bowls have been chiselled out from a block by a sculptor. This distinctive design sets it apart from the norm, giving designers the scope to create bathrooms with individuality. Similar attention to detail is evident in the modular furniture, which is available in three desirable shades of scultura grey, high gloss white and matt grey. The furniture features a handleless design for a minimal look. The key detail is a thin 7mm visible edge to the ultra-smooth door and drawer fronts, with a generous 7mm gap to the cabinet, to create a bold shadow line giving drawer fronts the illusion of hovering in front of the cabinets, whilst giving plenty of room for the ‘push to open’ mechanism to work.

29

The Mattis bath is the first freestanding bath in the Keramag Design portfolio and assures a design statement together with a luxurious bathing experience. With organic lines and a contemporary design, it complements all of the Keramag Design collections, giving designers an extended choice in back-towall and freestanding options thanks to the integral shelf detail. The Mattis bath is created from premium resin stone that’s warm to the touch, while being resistant to heat, shock and chemicals. Opale is an elegant new range of ultra lowprofile shower trays available in eight sizes, perfectly designed and positioned to take advantage of the move towards larger shower trays and reflecting the trend towards luxury showering. The range is made from high quality Varicor® solid surface for durability and good looks, with a smooth satin surface which is warm to the touch, anti-bacterial and has an anti-slip finish. Universal is a cleverly constructed cistern unit that is ideal for use when a cistern cannot be easily placed into a supporting wall. Designwise, it features elegant, curved edges for a contemporary look with the flush button and front designed as one elegant unit made from high-quality glass in white, black or taupe, with a stylish brushed aluminium frame available in natural, aluminium and champagne.

ENTRANCE AND LOBBY From the front door, visitors enter an area surrounded by glass panels, brushed by hand with blanc de Meudon, which reflect the sunlight to create a kinetic art effect. This very modern, bright and visual contrast, made using traditional French handicraft, creates a double-door entrance between the street and the lobby. On a Carrara marble floor, a black graphic oak counter held on two brass feet is surrounded by copper and nylon woven panels. In the evening, a soft light embraces these walls and reflects their brass sparkles.

A large abstract carpet, created by Jean Michel Alberola, brightens the length of the lobby between a set of white columns and arches.

33

Large leather armchairs designed by Bassam Fellow converse with the Minotti Hue armchairs and bench in front of a brass mesh folding screen. The plaster and bronze ceiling light and copper origami wall lamps add successive finishing touches to the spirit of Vernet.

ROOMS Room numbers are placed on metal console tables in front of each door. These small tables are individually lit, spread out on the carpets of the corridor and designed with a chevron pattern as a way of accessorising this pubic passageway.

RESTAURANT BAR

The beautiful dining room is bathed in light under the monumental glass roof designed by Gustave Eiffel.

The unstructured Carrara marble bar is set up as a sculpture in front of a large folded copper screen. Together, his timeless design blends perfectly with the original red marble fireplace.

Placed on an enormous carpet, two large half-circle green and blue benches face each other.

In keeping with the finest tradition of painted ceilings, a fresco was painted by Jean-Mine Alberola on the ceiling to match the carpet, which was also designed by the artist. The spirit of place gives this space remarkable elegance and modernity thanks to the blend of statuesque forms, contemporary art end indirect lighting outlining the shapes and colours.

The kitchen is visible through a large bay window. Its discreet end continuous movement contrasts with the contemporary artwork that is beautifully hung on the walls and mirrors and appears to be stopped in time. To the back of the restaurant, a small golden-coloured lounge can accommodate approximately 10 guests.

Issue 11 - 2014

Large curved oak screens, used as architectural elements, lead tee room towards the bathroom. The graphic style of the glass mosaic with its black and white geometrical lines is softened by the marble rugs underneath the washstands and bathtub. All of the bathroom fittings are made of solid brass that will continue to shine over time. The statuesque bedside lamps with brass leaves match the headboards carved in low relief. The randomly shaped mirror designed by Jean Michel Alberola is hung above a long white lacquered desk that incorporates blue writing case. A paper watercolour lampshade covers the lamp, which completes the entire furniture ensemble.

New products, new exhibitors, new ideas and a new business focus will all be ushered in on a wave of New Year optimism as the show opens its doors from 19th-21st January, for three days of insight and inspiration.

Ask any successful business person about defining moments in their career and you can bet that at some point in their rise to prominence there will have been someone mentoring them. There may be one or many, but the importance of a figurehead, there to help drive you on, or offer that bellwether piece of advice that you never forget and take with you throughout your career, cannot be understated. Mentoring is crucial to growth and development which is why in 2015 The Hospitality Show (19th-21st January, Birmingham NEC) is reprising its highly popular Business Mentor scheme to help visitors with business challenges. Sited alongside the Business Briefing Stage, which offers laser guided insight, debate and discussion on the most relevant topics and trends making the headlines. Now in its third successive year, the programme sees some of the most respected names in the hospitality industry on hand to pass on targeted business advice, offering visitors FREE bookable one-to-one sessions. Previous mentors include: celebrated restaurateur David Moore, Michelin-starred chef Andreas Antona, former National

Chef of the Year, Hayden Groves, General Manger of the Midland Hotel, Michael Magraine, highly respected chef Paul Askew, founder of Grand Union Pubs and Bars, Adam Marshall and many more. Tobu adds: “At present our 2015 lineup is still under wraps but visitors can be assured it will contain a heady mix of mercurial chef patrons, multisite operators, hoteliers, menu development specialists, drinks experts and high-level delegates from high street names. Watch this space.” Visitors looking to benefit from 15 minutes with a Business Mentor will soon be able to book online at www.hospitalityshow. co.uk. Late appointments can also be taken at the show but advanced booking is advised as the sessions prove extremely popular. Shinnoki 2.0 Shinnoki 2.0 is a range of ready to use veneered panels that are supplied already stained and lacquered, requiring no further finishing. With Shinnoki, the veneer is applied to an MDF base, rendering the panels sturdy and easy to use. In addition, the panels are produced in both a single or double sided finish, with the first having a veneer facedreverse. The veneers are mismatched, but stained and textured to create a consistent finish that shows the natural aspects and beauty of the species. The extensive Shinnoki 2.0 range is supplied in designs which are completely in tune with current design trends and includes matching realwood and ABS edge banding. The 17 designs are also supplied in separate 3-ply veneer sheets, perfect for curved surfaces, doors or other interior requirements. Chris Sutton, managing director of James Latham commented, “We now offer one of the UK’s widest ranges of innovative surface solutions, all under one roof and available directly from stock.” He added, “James Latham has a history and expertise in bringing new and innovative products to market and these latest additions fit perfectly within our portfolio.”

HOTEL

MAISON FL www.champsaur.com

François Champsaur is behind the Hôtel Maison FL’s renovation which recently reopened in Paris near Place du Trocadéro.

A large tan leather sofa with lacquered black feetdesigned by François Champsaur sits against a black steel and glass partition to provide view of the restaurant’s dining room.

The establishment, well-known to Parisians, was looking tired so its owners decided to commission him with the redevelopment, refurbishment and decor.

RESTAURANT LOUNGE AND BAR The restaurant lounge, bar and function room stand in a row and all have large bay windows with views outside. The entire ground floor is a tobacco-coloured oak post and beam structure. Plaster ceilings adorned with gold leaf set the tone.

The client agreed to a bold architectural plan to redesign the premises to transform it into a large open space and flood the lobby and function rooms with light. All the rooms were given a breath of fresh air with a major revamp.

40

The Art Deco building has become the perfect setting to showcase a very modern take on what interior design stands for with work in graphic design, ornamentation and incredible attention to detail in terms of furniture, layout, lighting, carpets etc. The dialogue between the powerful setting and François Champsaur’s resolutely modern approach creates a comfortable, elegant and vibrant atmosphere.

A handmade, free, open, vibrant design and colourful oversized rug on the floor brings energy to the room. A leaf pattern, the ultimate plant design, brings the space to life. The piece is tailor-made in hand-knitted wool. Reproductions of an Ignacio Gardella sofa complement the seating designed by François Champsaur in brown, ochre and natural leather in this spacious and light space. The marble marquetry tables add the finishing touch to the design. The lighting changes to suit different times of the day.

Artisan work also gives this renovated hotel its very own personality cemented by French expertise.

Pouenat Edition wall lighting in curved copper are polished on the outside and patinated on the inside.

ENTRANCE AND LOBBY The typical turn of the century façade was partly redesigned on the ground floor to create a pale stone framework to contrast with the black graphic design around the large bay windows on the ground floor.

At the rear, a black engraved glass bar has been designed by the Ateliers Guillaume Saalburg.

Visitors enter the hotel via a spacious lobby adorned with engraved wood on the walls, whitewash paintings, a gilded ceiling and terrazzo and mosaic floor.

ROOMS An enormous woven oak headboard has been treated like a piece of furniture to provide the room’s focal point. A sofa in front of the bow window stands by the free form table.

The stone and gold mosaic ribbons on the floor unfurl to lead visitors from the lobby to the restaurant and bar or to the lifts up to the rooms.

BATHROOM The bathroom is swathed in wide rows of black, gold and white glass tiles. Nestled in an alcove, the bath gives a sense of cosiness.

The reception desk is a beautiful example of modern ironwork in the form of a curved patinated and varnished copper leaf.

The Corian basin on chrome-plated feet stands opposite the bedroom door.

She was brought up in Asia and spent most of her childhood abroad in stylish locations which sparked her passion for beautiful homes and interiors. She began her professional life in fashion before opening her interior design agency, 1001 maisons, in 2005 where she worked with a team of architects, decorators and designers on private homes, hotels and yachts in France and abroad. All her designs feature clean lines combined with spectacular decor, nude tones with precious wood, dévoré velvet, Murano glass and shagreen. Design is also one of her passions and at last year’s Designer’s Days, she presented the Salamander Chair, made in collaboration with furniture maker Henryot & Cie. With its neoclassical shape, padded white leather seat adorned with a pair of wire salamanders, the chair embodies the haute couture furniture that the designer has always loved. Stéphanie Coutas was recently commissioned to design several suites for the Nouveau Paquebot France, including a spectacular 70m2 suite with a 360° rotating bed in front of a bay window. The mother-of- pearl and ebony inlay on the main door, dressing table in Murano glass, alabaster wall, silk rug and leather ceiling add the finishing touches to the luxurious look. Stéphanie Coutas is currently working on several projects: furnishing a villa in Cairo and a palace in the Middle East, redecorating a luxury 15th century 4* hotel in Burgundy and decorating private apartments in Paris. She is also launching her next collection of bespoke furniture, lighting and curtain tiebacks.

Following years of significant growth, eOne sought to relocate their UK headquarters in London to accommodate the expansion. team were excellent to work with and we’re delighted with the end product.” Oversized Tom Dixon copper mirror ball lights have been placed as feature lighting in the reception area. Aqua grout has been used universally throughout the project to pick out the client’s branding, creating a futuristic look. The Interiors Group specified Bolon flooring in a Wing design, two colours from the range were used and laid in varying directions so that the grain picked up the light in a different way. The wing design was used with the accent blue taken from the corporate colour. These Wings were set-out to act a form of wayfinding to guide visitors through the space right from the entrance of the reception through to the meeting suite. Kathryn O’Callaghan, Head Designer of The Interiors Group added: "Working with the client on this arrangement was a wonderful experience. Shortly after we completed this design, Bolon Wings won an award for the

‘Surface of the year’ which really cemented how great the flooring design looks in reality." The breakout area is situated at the heart of the three floors which leads onto an external terrace in the centre of the building creating a relaxed feel with high wooden benches & farmhouse chairs. Pendant lights hang from the embossed ceiling rafts framing each of the high benches and creating a focus to the seating areas. The boardroom is an expansive stylish & modern space with a feature fabric wrapped bulkhead light with LED lighting surround. sale starts january Bringing sense to lighting

Feature Bathroom lighting is becoming more desirable, but until now the choices of switching have been severely limited. (Pull-cords, PIRs or outside switching). Sensorbility, has therefore developed the NEW Bathroom Switch controller, with Dimmer andTimer variants; thus allowing bathroom designers far more flexibility when it comes to lighting design and operation within bathrooms. The variations of the new controller include simple on/off switching, ramp-up dimming, ramp-down switch-off and time delay switch-off. Wired to our proven Bathroom Switch Sensor Pads, which can be placed behind most materials such as Ceramic Tiles, Wood, Plastic, Glass, and even Metals, users can create switches or dimmers in virtually any shape and situation.Tiles covering Sensor Pads are adhered with silicone allowing access should it be necessary. In Bathrooms, these Sensor Pads can even be placed behind tiles reachable from the bath or shower (zones 1&2) and thus allow safe switching and dimming. The new Bathroom Switch controllers can be activated from up to 12 low voltage (5vdc) Sensor Pads, so for example a Dimmer Controller can be operated from a Sensor Pad by the door and then the lights dimmed by touching a tile whilst in the bath. Most types of lighting can be operated by the Bathroom Switch; this includes incandescent bulbs, halogens (mains and low voltage), LEDs and low energy bulbs.

Lyndon Design launches ‘Maya’ chair by Mark Gabbertas Lyndon Design, the leading manufacturer of upholstered handcrafted furniture for commercial interiors, has once again collaborated with awardwinning furniture designer, Mark Gabbertas, to unveil Maya. A distinctive tub-style chair that exudes comfort and style whilst retaining a strong and clearly defined form, Maya is ideal for a wide variety of interiors, including both formal and informal spaces. Offering the choice of two back heights, Maya is characterised by its compact and graphic form, with a clearly expressed junction of the seat and back elements and a gentle taper to its overall profile. The premise of the design is that it can provide a sense of privacy, but also encourage sociability and interaction, depending on how the user positions themselves in the chair. This latest collaboration is undeniably a striking design and echoes Lyndon Design’s

impeccable manufacturing expertise and ability to combine first class design with unparalleled craftsmanship. Commenting on his latest collaboration with Lyndon Design, Mark Gabbertas said: “We always envisaged a chair with a strong, clearly defined form that deliberately contrasted the strictness of its exterior with the comfort and cosseting nature of the interior. A chair that you can use in different ways depending on where you are and what you want to do.’’ Lyndon Design’s Managing Director, Tim Armitt said: “Appealing to both corporate and hospitality arenas, Maya successfully harnesses the design vision of Mark Gabbertas with the renowned quality craftsmanship of Lyndon Design a winning formula.” For further information contact 01242 584897 or visit www.lyndon.co.uk

Everything had to be removed and the space stripped back to its barest button-factory bones before Piero and Debla could even begin to draw the interior partitions and plan out the rest of the architectural details and decoration schemes. Responding to the request of a growing family, including all the modern amenities one would expect today, but at the same time keeping the spirit of an open loft space, Piero Manara devised a layout that would correspond to the client’s contradicting needs and desires. How does one achieve the feeling of an open space that is as uninterrupted as possible, from one side of the loft to the other, but at the same time create a cozy sense of intimacy? How does one allow for both guests and children to interact without feeling as though everyone is always in the same space? The answer came from opening up more windows on the lot line of the building (a complicated subject in a Landmarked area), and then using the natural light as a guide to plan out the private spaces, following the same principles of Japanese Residential Architecture, where the circulation goes from light to shadow, from public, to private. www.theartofdesignmagazine.com

uch is the tendency of Casamanara, a few architectural ‘surprises’ were included in the project, such as rooms on split levels that were generally hidden from plain sight, light sources added in unexpected areas and extending the limits between bathroom and bedrooms. The longitudinal space was also divided with 3 large sliding partitions which would help extend or reduce the sense of space according to how much the owners would be willing to allow their guests to discover. At the same time, embracing the fact that a Loft is meant to remain an open area where one wanders around without restrictions, we enhanced this sense of mobility by installing the main TV set hanging from a sliding rail hidden in the ceiling. Following the owner’s desire that one should be able to see the TV from any corner of the main space, it is a sort of focal point in one’s quest for the best spot to sit and relax, before being enthralled by another feature elsewhere in the space. The palette of materials and finishes were kept to a minimum, using strong wood finishes throughout more as architectural elements than solely decorative items, complementing the original brick work and wood floor, before bleaching them to make them more contemporary. The goal of providing a project which could grow with the family’s evolving needs was successfully achieved as the space has been witness to as many large parties as it has intimate gatherings. www.casamanara.com info@casamanara.com

Bringing you the latest technology in water management Marshalls Mono Beany Combined Kerb and Drainage Mono Beany is the newest addition to Marshalls’ comprehensive range of water management products. Building on the success of its best-selling linear drainage products Beany and Mini Beany, Mono Beany is Marshalls’ first one-piece concrete kerb and drainage system made with ultra-tough M-Tech, the latest in concrete technology. The one-piece design is ready for rapid installation, with the potential to lay 1m in a single motion. Mono Beany is easy to specify, built to last, carries the British Standard Kitemark, is certified to BS EN:1433 and is CE approved. It can handle a strong flow of water and can carry up to 40 tonnes (Class D400) making it suitable for trafficking applications such as major and minor carriageways, car parks and commercial and urban landscapes.

74

Specifically designed for low to medium flow capacity water management, Mono Beany is cost-effective and flexible with excellent surface drainage efficiency, delivering expert control thanks to its intelligent features which deliver rapid surface water clearance and efficient drainage flow. Installation costs are further reduced and speeds increased due to only a single mechanical lift being required per meter. Inlet apertures are 500mm apart, reducing running or fast flowing water on the carriageway and eliminating ponding. The new polyethylene core creates less resistance than standard concrete at lower flows for improved hydraulic performance. Together these features ensure surface water is cleared rapidly and internal flow is smooth and efficient.

installing the product. “Adding Mono Beany to our combined kerb and drainage range demonstrates our ongoing commitment to water management and it is already proving to be an extremely popular product.” The growing demand for more cost-effective and less complicated drainage systems has led to modern linear drainage becoming the preferred choice amongst specifiers and contractors. Carnell Contractors partnered with the Highways Agency to implement improvements on part of the busy A259, close to the village of Guestling Green near Hastings. To make it more reliable and safe for users, the project involved resurfacing to prolong the life of the carriageway and required a more effective drainage system. The client and contractors worked with Marshalls to develop the design using a mix of both Half Battered and 45° Splayed Mono Beany components to help resolve previous drainage issues. Droppers and Centre Stones were also supplied and used at the access points where vehicles drive across the kerb line, which enable the surface water to drain at these locations, ensuring it doesn’t collect and cause future flooding problems. A team of engineering consultants was appointed to design the new road improvements, including the use of a permeable system and replacement of the gullies. To minimise disruption for road users, the project had to be completed as quickly and effectively as possible which was achievable using Mono Beany.

Mono Beany is available in a range of sizes to help reduce cutting and waste on site. Half Battered of 45° Splayed profiles are available for schemes with slow or fast moving traffic. Accessories can be added to incorporate pedestrian crossings or roundabouts.

The benefits of Mono Beany have been recognised by Costain, which has since selected the system for the M1 managed motorway scheme across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Over 14,000 linear meters of Mono Beany is being installed to help upgrade the road.

Marshalls’ drainage expert Andrew Stalker said: “With Mono Beany we have created a product that not only provides exceptional performance, but also makes life easier for those specifying and

Be creative with concrete tiles Solus Ceramics introduce Craft, a concrete inspired range that is uniquely identified by bold, broad brushstrokes that give the design of these tiles a sense of freedom and artistic expression. Inspired by modern architecture, Craft is interpreted in eight stunning colours that can be divided into two distinct groups. Warm beiges and milky creams can be used together to create welcoming and homely environments, whilst the four cooler shades convey a sense of modernity and sophistication. Interestingly each tile features characteristic variations in tone and shade, which creates an organic ambience when used throughout a large space. In addition the surface of each individual tile is always slightly different, showcasing a range of minute dapples, crevices and brushstrokes. For more information please contact our sales team. Timothy Oulton UNIQUE STYLE INNOVATION

78

About Timothy Oulton Before he went into the antiques trade, Tim’s father was a major in the British Army. It’s from him that Tim got a taste for military pageantry (and a bit of a thing for drums). When he left school Tim thought he might end up becoming a man in a suit, but in that first summer when he worked for his dad’s antique business he got the bug. He fell in love with beautiful old things that carry secrets and stories in the leather and the wood, and there was no going back. Years of scanning flea markets uncovered Tim’s instinct for finding the most beautiful pieces. He loves antiques, but recognises their limitations. The Timothy Oulton vision is bigger than simply trading in old beauties. It is a passion to make beautiful and practical furniture, inspired by the past but re-visioned to be relevant for today.

>

Quality craftsmanship really matters, there are no cutting corners. The best quality leathers from South America are hand tumbled to a soft worn finish. Individually hand-tied spring systems ensure a secure and comfortable seat. Handstitching, traditional joinery and hand-tufting all take time. Tim says, “If it takes 12 days to make it, I’m drawn to it. The more intricate and detailed it is, the more authentic and unique it will be.” Timothy Oulton cares about the provenance of the materials as much as the skills of its craftspeople. Reclaimed weathered timber might come from decommissioned Chinese fishing junks in the Axel range, or the century-old doors of an English distillery in the Salvage range. Pieces are designed to celebrate the history of the materials and to give them a second life, with imperfections and ‘signs of life’ considered by Tim to be marks of authenticity and soul. > www.theartofdesignmagazine.com

NEW BUILD OR REFURBISHMENT CHOOSE demista™

Eli-Chem Resins launches revolutionary self-illuminating light sources

House builders, developers, the self build sector, and the public are looking forward to 2015 with a great deal of optimism. The property market appears to be tentatively on the move, and one item is proving to be of great interest to those building or refurbishing houses and apartments.

New developments in polymer resin and pigment technology driven by architects, artists and interior designers has resulted in an innovative new product range. Eli-Glow Photo-Luminescent pigments are taking hold as a self-sustaining, self-illuminating feature for indoor and outdoor applications. This has opened up huge marketing opportunities for different artistic effects, displays and creations. As the light changes so does the visual effect on the human eye. Eli-Glow is the very latest “state of the art” substance in sustainable eco-lighting technology. The artistic applications for designers are endless as well as a safety feature for pathways, drives, cycle paths and doorway entrances. They provide a visual ‘glow in the dark’ functionality with multiple applications thus affording a low/zero cost alternative in many situations to traditional lighting and as such are truly green and eco-friendly. Eli-Glow Photo-Luminescent products use no electricity, solar power or batteries for energy supply.

Added value at minimal cost to any new or refurbished bathroom must the be the inclusion of a demista™ heated mirror pad. This pad is easy to install, and will ensure a steam free mirror at all times, no matter how steamed up the bathroom. The heated mirror pads are available in a variety of sizes, to suit most mirrors and in the case of a particularly large surface, they can be used in multiples. Running costs are minimal and ideally, once wired in to the lighting system, they will gently warm the mirror when the bathroom is in use. The pads can also be fitted in bathroom cabinets.

The 16 July 2013 was just a normal day for Sam Callon, the Managing Director of Spot On Displays in County Durham. That was until she received an enquiry from a longstanding client, an elegant lady with a taste for fashion and a discerning artistic eye, who asked ‘do you do Original Wallpaper?’

a team of self-confessed creative perfectionists. So they set to work, scouring the North East in search of something fitting. They were amazed at what they found. Sam recalls ‘in what you might call the underground art scene inhabited by fabulous local artists with amazing talent, we discovered the most ridiculously good variety of original illustrations, bespoke artwork and spectacular photography – the quality of which simply has to be seen to be believed! It was a fantastic experience and we knew that we had unearthed the makings of something special.’

Something Beautiful, Original and Truly Wonderful! While this was a new request for Spot On Displays, a leading supplier of large format printing with a twenty year pedigree of creativity, Sam is never one to shy away from a challenge. When asked what exactly would she like, the client replied ‘something beautiful, original and truly wonderful!’ Sam and her designers immediately smiled and knew that this was an opportunity too good to pass up for

Truly inspired and knowing that they had to make this incredible collection available to a wider audience, Sam decided that this was to be the first commission of a brand new business venture. After months of hard work, the Original Wallpaper Company is fully operational and the client’s request for something beautiful, original and truly wonderful is now the minimum

requirement for every project. And you can now order this original wallpaper online. It falls into three broad groups; original art, photographic and bespoke, for which an artist can design something just for you. You can even send a picture of your room and the team will create an image showing you exactly how the wallpaper will look in your space. Everything is made lovingly by hand and produced on site to the highest possible standards with the best materials to ensure quality that will last. By its very nature, all wallpapers are strictly limited editions that you won’t find it anywhere else on the web. So if you are tired of bland off-theshelf, mass produced wallpaper and want something different, be sure to delight your artistic taste buds by exploring the growing collection at www.originalwallpapercompany.com or look out for one of the upcoming exhibitions. One thing’s for certain: you won’t be disappointed. Illustrations by Peter Redden (top) and photography by Jake Cook (bottom).

Leading British furniture designers, Deadgood, have designed their Plex Collection using Plex from the DecoMetal® by Formica Group range and Formica® High Pressure Laminate (HPL). The name of the collection and the idea behind the design were both inspired by the qualities and characteristics of Formica® laminate.

9 Dow Corning Launches New High-End Sealant, Adhesive Solutions for More Energy Efficient Buildings, Glass Façades at Glasstec 2014

Deadgood director, Dan Ziglam, chose the Red Dot awardwinning, avant-garde texture Plex, and Formica® HPL to create contrasting block colour panelling on the surfaces of the Plex Cabinet and Plex Sideboard. Plex stands out with its exciting visual effect which intrigues with its textile feel, crisp touch and low gloss sheen. Formica laminate samples can be requested through Formica Group’s website www.formica.com

16

The new weathered brass finish has been developed specifically to complement the company’s growing copper sink range, and has a characterful rustic appearance without excessive shine. Its understated elegance shows off the beautiful burnished hues of the hand-hammered copper sinks to their best advantage, allowing the gleaming vessels to take centre stage. They also work well with ceramic sinks, offering a striking and tasteful alternative for those who prefer less gleam and are looking for traditional charm. The weathered brass finish is available on nine different styles of taps and has a co-ordinating strainer waste too. Telephone: 01384 220030 Web: www.sinks.co.uk Email: sales@sinks.co.uk

1 Louis Vuitton Neo Greenwich Nomade Grand Damier Bag For their 2014 collection, Louis Vuitton has reworked their classic Damier bag to create the Nomade Grande Damier travel bag. Still with the iconic shape, the Nomade Grande Damier is even more convenient for travel with the addition of the overly supple Nomade leather. Once again, the square design makes it perfect for carrying folded items. This bag has a washable and scratch proof lining and a zip closure with a padlock. The Louis Vuitton brand and iconic monogram are among the world’s most valuable brands. It is also one of the most counterfeited. Chances are if you are buying an LV at a greatly discounted price, it is not a true Louis Vuitton! £4,600.00 uk.louisvuitton.com

Bentley Lalique for Bentley

Elite Innovations's Flagship pool table.

The limited crystal edition Lalique for Bentley has been inspired by the legendary “Flying B”, the mascot of Bentley cars.

Striking aesthetics make it the perfect centrepiece for the modern game room. Visible integrated ball return makes a feature of pocketed balls.

97

This precious collector’s item comes in a dark-wooden box together with an elegant leathery interior. The wooden box carries an extra drawer for the separate bottle of the Eau deParfum. The fragrance opens with an elegant and rich accord of orris butter and white cedarwood. Notes of patchouli and papyrus give a charasmatic heart with a luxurious base of dry amber and musk.

Elite Innovations pool tables blend ultra modern styling and new patented technology. The transparent playing area is composed of the patented Vitrik transparent playing surface on top of a 15mm toughened glass top. The Vitrik playing surface replicates the rolling resistance of a standard cloth pool table surface and provides a shock absorbing layer for the glass beneath. It is a smooth, glossy see-through material with a fine mesh underneath. It retains consistent roll characteristics over its lifetime.

£3,000 www.harrods.com

Our glass is premium quality 15mm Monolithic Float glass with exposed polished edges. Purchase of table Includes ball set, black triangle and two Aluminium cues and bridge stick. £16,000.00

13

Canadian winery Royal DeMaria produced this bottle, which differs from the normal wine as it is an ice wine. Ice wine is produced in a unique way compared to most wines – the grapes are frozen on the vine before being fermented, creating a sweeter taste that makes ice wine a ‘desert wine’, as the perfect accompaniment to a sugary treat. They sold a particularly fine bottle of their vintage in 2006 for $30,000. £19,000
