COUTURIERS OF LIGHT Staffan’s first piece for Contardi was born at the V&A. His search for a light that was a piece of ‘functional sculpture’ was a journey into the past for an object that would have relevance and resonance across time and culture. His answer was the Belle. An almost Platonic shape with iterations in Eastern and Western culture, the Belle’s solemn curves are modelled in ceramic and then glossed in a muted palette of colours personally selected by Staffan during one of his visits to Contardi’s headquarters in Desio, outside Milan. The silk rope, luxuriously plaited to conceal the electric cord, adds a subtle touch of glamour to this monastic piece. Launched at Maison et Objet in January 2014, the Belles were immediately appealing. Hanging down beside a bed, or layered over a staircase, the Belles evoke sacred spaces and only reveal their function on closer inspection. When a former colleague proudly sent him a picture of them hanging in another designer’s store on the Brompton Road, it was the proof that his products had moved from a private space to a public one and that other designers and retailers could see that the Belle was a commercially viable piece.

ECHOES FROM THE PAST At Euroluce, the lighting fair at Saloni, 2015 two more iterations of the Belle were launched: a half Belle becomes a wall light, and a ‘School Belle’ that evokes memories of a former age where a bell with a solid handle was hand rung to call children back from the playground. A ceiling light, Recess, also takes inspiration from the past and from sacred spaces. And from a frustration with the ubiquitous downlights that pepper modern ceilings. Says Staffan, “somewhere along the way we lost the beauty of the ceiling. Like the 4th wall between the audience and the stage we all started pretending that the ceiling was invisible and just a place in which to position lights.” Recess, born from the idea of stained-glass windows, helps to reclaim this plane and add some beauty to it in the form of strong geometrical metal detailing across back-lit LED glass panels. “It’s a solution for letting light inside a room in a decorative manner that is centuries old, and it’s one that I’m excited to see interior designers and architects make their own.” This on-going collaboration with Contardi is one that Staffan is enormously proud of, and grateful for Sales Director Massimo Brigandi’s belief that an interior designer would understand both the needs of the professional market as well as the long-established brand and values of this ‘couturier of lighting’.

BENEATH THE SURFACE Staffan’s next collaboration was a series of rugs for international fabric and flooring company JAB Anstoetz. Together with Senior Designer Keisha Hulsey, Staffan crystallised a concept that has underpinned his design work: the Scandinavian notion of the ‘Red Thread’. “I have used it as a powerful metaphor to describe the journey towards the creative DNA of each project we have worked on – the heart of the matter that connects interior, architecture and environment; the visual or creative motif that tells our client’s story using the language of design.” The creative journey towards these eight rugs therefore began with a question. “We asked ourselves what our red thread was. What was it that we as designers found truly interesting and inspiring; what was it that we wanted to explore in this unique opportunity?”

They found the answer in the fundamental matter of each of their projects: story-telling and the truth of materials. A rug is an artwork in two dimensions. Yet beneath this flat finished sculpture is the story of the maker, the natural elements and the originating design process. Staffan explored how each rug could tell the story of the artistry of JAB Anstoetz’s artisans, of the processes that make their rugs so creatively rich and valuable. At the same time they used the metaphor of change and of revelation as a vehicle for these techniques. The earth is ripped apart to allow a seam of volcanic silk to erupt to the surface; the flat wool sea is disturbed with concentric carved ripples; the alchemical effect of water on metal bleeds one colour into another, a story of time and transformation.

The Red Thread Collection clockwise from above left: Surface explores the cracking of the earth; Beneath tells the story of the incredible power of the liquid, burning heart of our seemingly solid landscape. Splash combines raised silk on a wool ground to a satisfyingly liquid effect. Dissolve is a tale of transformation and of tarnishing. A metal surface is changed over time by the effects of the environment around it. Diamond takes a very humble material and makes it extraordinary. Out of the disturbance of perfection comes something even more beautiful, the Drop rug.

AWARD WINNING DESIGN The final rug, the Red Thread, was JAB’s idea. “When we described how each rug told the story of material change, of the reality of what lies beneath, of our desire to explore texture and truth in each rug as we do in each of our projects, Michael Constable, the originator of the project with JAB UK, asked if we could design a rug that captured our notion of the ‘Red Thread’ as we had described it to him.” The Red Thread is the simplest rug of them all. A silk cut pile that runs through a neutral wool ground: it is an invitation to every client to find the rhythm of their own story and to map it out.

Above: Design imitating life - Staffan traces the rug thread through the rug. Right: The Red Thread materialized

GRAND DESIGNS Back to Britain, glass statuette placed proudly in the entrance to the Design Store, Staffan and Keisha are finalising the latest collaboration with one of the country’s oldest and best-known manufacturer of beds and mattresses, Vi-Spring. A new headboard will be launched in Decorex this year. There is talk of a range of marble basins with another British manufacturer and Staffan has his sights set on an eponymous range of furniture that he will design over the next few years and manufacture in Britain. So if you’re trying to find Staffan and can’t reach him at the office, head over to the V&A or perhaps Tate Britain. If you see a tall Swede wandering the halls with furrowed brow and a sketch book, chances are you’ve found him. Says Staffan: “We ask for the point of departure and the end, and a clue as to whether their story has been straight to the point or a meandering tale that has made the most of the canvas afforded to it.” The collection was launched worldwide at the 2015 Cologne Furniture Fair to great acclaim. Two of the rugs were winners in the Interior Innovation award and the Diamond rug was awarded a coveted ‘Best of the Best’ award – one of just 15 products selected from the thousands at the Fair.

The Wood in Woodstock Th e Real Wo o d Furni tu re C o m p a ny The story started in 1990 when, after many years dealing in antique English country chairs and furniture, Chris Baylis set up The Real Wood Furniture Company. The aim was to make traditionally styled country chairs, retaining the aesthetic of their antique counterparts, but offering greater comfort and practicality for the shape, size and demands of use of modern day man and woman. 25 years on, chairs are still a major part of the company’s offer, but in between times Chris has designed a whole range of ‘country styled’ furniture and chairs, including contemporary designs and natural ‘light’ finishes, all on display in its Woodstock showrooms. Here you can see room sets, beautifully laid out, with furniture for the dining room and kitchen, hall and lounge, bedroom and study. All pieces can be made to order, to customers’ specification or can be chosen ‘from the floor’. A team of eight skilled craftsmen work with sustainable English hardwoods, specialising in the use of characterful and heavily figured oak and burr oak, as well as ash, elm and cherry. The beauty of commissioning a piece is that clients can really get involved in defining the specification of their furniture, helping to create unique and beautiful pieces that will give lasting pleasure. Chris and his team are experts in proportion, style and finish and will guide and advise, with home visits and more general ‘interiors’ advice available as well. Start with a visit to the beautiful Woodstock showrooms, housed in three adjoining period, listed buildings, to see the core collection. Browse with no pressure, touch the hand planed surfaces and enjoy the beauty of the carefully selected timbers. Seek inspiration and enjoy… if you need help, it’s at hand! There’s also a

Ferruccto Laviant

Discretion is his lifestyle. His language is definitely contemporary and personal, often recognizable in a sign or in a peculiar colour. Even combined with a detail of the past. He’s on the scene since the beginning of the 90s. It’s the arising of a new generation of designers with a sophistcated and original creativity. Architect and designer, after his studies in Milan he started his professional career creating and designing for brands like Mandarina Duck, Olivetti, Swatch. Since 1992 he’s committed in several creative fields: from industrial communication to corporate identity. His approach to the product is global-like: from graphics, to packaging, to image consulting. He designs for prestigious Italian and international brands as Foscarini,

Emmemobili, T70, Halifax, Kartell, Mixel, FontanaArte, De Padova, Flos, Molteni&C, Moroso, Swarovski. For many years he has been studying the concept of flagship stores. He has been dealing with interior design for fashion brands like Dolce & Gabbana, for whom he conceived the Gold restaurant in Milan. He has designed Beluga concept for Rastelli; about our company he says: “The most beautiful thing is when you’re trying to motivate a company through your proposals and realize that they have been already understood and welcomed, realize to have in front of you who first gave you traction and support to make it come true, and that starts asking you more and more until you reach a certain point where you need to slow it down”.

Where moody comes into its own is the versatility of scenes and effects that can be programmed. Available in many variants, moody can handle up to 10 zones of colour or 16 white-light fixtures. Simply hold down the button for 3 seconds to enter programming mode, then step through each zone or fixture to set the colour or intensity. If dynamic effects are desired, such that the colour gradually cycles through a spectrum, then no problem – there is a moody variant for that too.

Mood control made simple With eco-friendly credentials, pleasant white tones and mindblowing colours, it’s no wonder that LED lighting is taking off in a big way. And, as the price of LED strip lighting has come down, colour coving effects – often seen in hotels, restaurants and other public spaces – are becoming increasingly popular in the home. Unfortunately, the affordability of the control units needed to achieve sophisticated LED effects has not kept pace with the fixtures. Many customers are also put off by the perceived complexity of programming and operating such systems. In a world of apps, touchscreens and smart devices, do you sometimes long for a simple switch on the wall?

moody features both DMX512 and DALI outputs, enabling it to be used with a wide range of dimmers. Alternatively, for customers needing a standalone solution that can be used directly with LED fixtures, moody cv offers a built-in constant voltage dimmer. Starting at just £99 (ex. VAT), the moody range offers fantastic value. As with all Artistic Licence products, quality is assured – with 25 years of experience in lighting control, we stake our reputation on it.

Lighting controls expert, Artistic Licence, has customers that do! So, in response to feedback, we have developed moody - a programmable wall-mount controller for white or colour LED. moody has an illuminated rotary control wheel that shows the intensity and/or colour of the fixtures being driven. Operation is just like a conventional dimmer switch: rotate to control intensity or colour, push to auto-fade on or off.

moody is designed and manufactured in the UK. For more details, please scan the QR code below.

An Interview with simplehuman CEO Frank Yang I know you worked for your Dad’s product company before you launched your business, what made you branch out on your own? My Father’s company focused on classic design, whereas I could see there was an opportunity for a new housewares business with a different sort of product design, better engineering and stronger branding. Did you face many challenges when you were starting out on your own? Yes, a few. Although my early product designs were well received, I had to convince buyers that simplehuman could deliver. Also, it was challenging to find the right factory partner who shared my focus on high quality materials and great design.

How long after launching the company did you feel you could really see the potential it had? Well, it wasn’t long! Probably about a year after we launched in 2000. That was when we started getting sizeable, regular orders. Where do you get your design inspiration from? I think inspiration is everywhere. It’s all around us, in the conversations we have with people and the products we use. For example, it was watching the motion of my car trunk that made me think about the slow close lid on our trash cans. Being around younger people and seeing how they interact with technology is inspiring too. I look at the games people play on their smartphones and can see that there’s something addictive in their simplicity,

much like the purity of apple products that makes those so appealing. On a personal level, I enjoy being part of a small team, brainstorming ideas and coming up with cool products that we’re proud to share with our friends. What drives you to succeed in your business career? When I read a consumer review that says “You know what, I never thought I’d say this, but I LOVE my trash can” – that’s my idea of success. I speak quite regularly to MBA students at UCLA and USC and they ask really good, searching questions. I want to keep thinking like that, to stay open to new ideas and new ways of doing things. At simplehuman we’re always looking for ways for ourselves and our customers to become more efficient.

Looking forward, what can you see the future holds for simplehuman? simplehuman will remain focused on our core categories – trash cans, sensor pumps, sensor mirrors – while evolving smarter products that help people to live better. Are there any plans for further growth into new markets? I’m open to exploring new markets. It’s all about moving with the times and not looking back. I want to keep helping people become more efficient.

Looking back over the years you have been in business, is there anything you would have done differently? That’s a good question. I think I could have spent more time recruiting the very best people, experts who could have given valuable business insights a little earlier. That might have helped save some time in the long run. What advice would you give an up and coming entrepreneur looking to break through in their respected market place?

Only do it you really love your product or service. You’ve got to know that it will really help people and that you want it in your own life. If you just see a gap in the market and think you can create something that’s just ‘good enough’, it might make a bit of money but it won’t give you the same sense of fulfilment. What’s next for Frank Yang? I plan to keep loving what I do – creating bigger and more impactful products.

Nicholas Sunderland Interiors, one of Londons High end Luxury Interior Designers was commissioned by an overseas client to design and furnish a new apartment he had purchased in central London. The property was built by British Land was to a high Standard, but not an exacting standard, and the client wanted the London residence to be a show piece and faultless in every way. We asked Nicholas to outline the brief and design to us. The brief was quite simple, design and furnish in an elegant contemporary manner within a tight deadline. Zigzag Design Studio are a dynamic design and make company based in Oxfordshire, and are doing something quite special with staircases. Headed by designer Nick Burborough, they have designed and made a stunning range of over 40 sculptural balustrades, and are steadily growing a range of equally beautiful staircases. ‘Our designs provoke a reaction, we are turning structures into works of art, centre pieces for the home’ says Burborough, who studied Furniture Design at Nottingham Trent University before going on to set up his own design studio, specialising in staircases back in 2000. ‘We have made staircases for years now and we were being increasingly asked if we could give staircases a ‘facelift’, but there is nothing on the market to do that with if you want to achieve

a really stunning, high end look, so we had to design something, which ended up being our range of sculptural balustrading.’ (pictured above right). Zigzags spindles can be fitted to new or existing staircases with ease, inside or out, and the results are eye catching and truly beautiful. As well as balustrading Zigzag are constantly adding to their range of sculptural staircases, like their ‘Tree’ spiral (opposite page) and ‘Spine’ (above left), a component staircase that creates a spine like structure to support its steps. Mrs Stone Store Natural stone has been around for hundreds of years and has been used in some of the world’s oldest, most iconic buildings such as the Taj Mahal in India and the Sacre Cour Church in France. Today, it is still a material in demand in the interior design and home renovation sector and has gained a reputation for bringing a timeless, chic and classic look to many homes around the world. Equally though, natural stone can be used to create stunning contemporary spaces with a modern design touch.

Luxurious underfoot For spaces looking to make a grand statement, honed stone flooring is one of the most luxurious types of finish available and will instantly create a contemporary feel. Choosing a warm, rich stone such as Moleanos Classic Beige limestone creates instant finesse and elegance. The delicate shell detailing, adds interest and its versatility makes it a practical solution for walls and floors.

Contemporary patterns One of the best things about working with natural stone is that you can be creative in how you choose to use them. With clever planning, it’s possible to mix colours to create patterns and re-create popular design trends such as geometric or industrial. Whilst creating manmade bespoke tiles may be beyond many budgets, using many of today’s design resources such as Pinterest, Houzz and Room Edit, it is easy to draw inspiration as to how natural stone can be installed to create contemporary and eye catching features.

Rugged fresh style The words rustic and rugged could be considered a juxtaposition in terms of design styles when you think of contemporary modern interiors, but - there is a trend at the moment for mixing natural materials and sleek furnishings together to create a modern antiqued look. One of the most versatile natural stone products for achieving this is the split face stone cladding panels. These vary-profiled 3D wall panels are fixed direct to the wall and instantly revitalise and transform spaces.

Touch Ironmongery Ltd www.atouchofbrass.co.uk 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea London SW10 9PJ

The Perfect Touch

E

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell. In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the

Ironmongery market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Touch’s owner and founder, Bill Benham, has 33 years’ experience in the ironmongery trade, as do his colleagues Jim Haselup and Alan Blanchard. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods

which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an onsite service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Refurbishment is a large part of the business; Touch will undertake complete ironmongery refurbishment projects, and can restore old paint covered door furniture to their former glory, looking as new, at a fraction of the cost to replace.

Bu t t e rt on by L L I D es i g n L in d a Leve n e’ s Reflective Statement The objective of this project was to transform the entire ground floor of a newly built (c. 5 year old) detached house in Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom in which the internal layout and fit out was both dated and inadequate for the family’s lifestyle. The clients, a young professional couple with 2 children, wanted their home to be easy to live in and meet their family’s lifestyle needs on all levels. In essence they wanted their home to have a clean modern look which was not cold and clinical; somewhere they could relax and entertain, but at the same time would function as a practical family home. The existing layout had been configured without consideration to furniture layouts and the best use of natural light. The client’s explained at briefing that certain rooms were not comfortable and thus were rarely used. Their desire was for an amended layout and completely new design concept, to create a home that met their design aspirations and encouraged them to use all the living space. The key to the overall success of the project was in changing the whole dynamic of the spaces and re-thinking and re-imagining how the family would use their home. By creating a new layout, flow and design aesthetic throughout, including new decor, lighting, finishes, fixtures and fittings, the whole atmosphere has been transformed. The central living space has been enlarged by combining 2 rooms and installing a statement glass and lacquer kitchen featuring a substantial island and a wide range of state of the art appliances. Overall the new scheme has created an uplifting, stylish and comfortable environment for the family.

91

The Brief, Space planning, layout and f low The family had bought the house new and over time had come to recognise that it did not fulfil their wishes as to how they wanted to live. The original layout was fairly traditional, with a family / kitchen room at the back of the house looking onto the garden, a separate dining room at the front was rarely used - mainly because it was difficult to access from the kitchen. There were two further reception rooms, one of which, whilst large, was also under used as the layout, lighting and decor combined to make it an uncomfortable space. It was calculated that up to 40% of the space was very seldom used, which was an important factor in the redesign. The house in general, needed to be taken to a new level of design and quality, LLI Design proposed that more open plan living would suit the family’s lifestyle. The wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed in order to create one large area divided into a family living space, new kitchen and dining area. This approach changed the whole dynamic and truly placed the kitchen at the heart of the home whilst at the same time having the added benefit of flooding the space with natural light from front and rear aspects. One of the reception rooms was redefined as a TV / lounge and the other as a study.

Statement f rosted glass kitchen The kitchen was designed to give a real wow factor. A dramatic 3.7m long central island wrapped in statement dove grey frosted glass was installed and under lit with LED strips. The island houses the double sink, with waste disposer, water softener, pop up sockets, induction hob with downdraft extractor and a breakfast bar at one end. An impressive bank of tall units sits against the back wall with 2 ovens, microwave, steam oven and a large wine fridge. At one end there are

pocket doors that fold back to reveal, toaster, mixer and all paraphernalia that usually clutter the worktop. This can be closed when not required, keeping the look sleek and visually pure. The existing utility room was stripped out and the space was re-designed. New units were specified including a full height pull out pantry. Overall providing increased storage and also making it a practical room for laundry.

92

TV / Lounge The larger reception room was repurposed as a TV / lounge due to it’s lack of natural light. It was important to make this room warm, welcoming and cosy especially as it had been so under used in the past. The palette was kept to oranges, taupes and greys, together with a walnut floor. This progresses harmoniously from the open plan area adjacent to it. A sizeable and comfy L shaped sofa along with an orange accent Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair and a large textured rug were specified. An oversized classic arc lamp finishes the space, along with dramatic artworks that complete the room. A full width, bespoke lacquer wall hung unit was specified, under lit with a warm hum of LED. The 65” TV was set flush into a bespoke stud partition, so, although large it didn’t dominate the room.

F am ily & Dining Areas In the family area, furnishings were kept simple but with strong styling lines, a bright red retro styled sofa with chaise end and a rug together with a statement Flos spun floor lamp and bright artworks, warm up the area. A limited palette of greys, creams, blacks and reds added drama to the space.

Study & WC The second reception room became a bright Study for the couple’s two children. A bespoke wall hung unit with LED lighting allows for ample storage and 2no. back to back desks with classic Eames EA108 chairs in bright yellow and turquoise Arne Jacobsen AJ table lamps complete the look, making it an uplifting space to study. The small downstairs WC was transformed with sleek floor and wall tiles. On one wall a full size mirror was installed with led strip below. New lighting and a wall hung WC and basin completed the revitalisation of the space.

I n t e ri o r A r c h i t ectural Details & I n te l l i ge n t Li gh tin g Sch eme All the painted panelled joinery doors were removed and new flush walnut veneered doors were specified, to create a contemporary feel. Some doors were specified with glazed panels to maximise light levels. New door furniture was specified throughout including projection hinges to allow for 180 degree opening doors to the new dining area. Engineered American Black walnut flooring was specified in the TV / lounge, study and hallway and large format porcelain tiles in the open plan areas. The entire open plan area was underfloor heated and new contemporary radiators installed elsewhere. A new lighting scheme was designed and specified including new fittings and garden lighting. An Intelligent Lighting system was installed in order to create moods, ambience and timed events internally and externally, controlled from wall mounted keypads and also by iPads / iPhones.

In the dining area the Flos spun floor lamp was repeated and a honed granite table with upholstered slimline dining chairs were specified to inject texture and as a contrast to the block of Flos Fuschia glass hanging ceiling lights above.

T.A.G. Smith

Inspired by the natural world, Nottinghamshire based self-taught artist T.A.G. Smith creates unique realistic sculptures using the natural characteristics of different woods. From the age of fourteen when he bought his first scroll saw, Tom has gradually been teaching himself and developing a technique known as ‘intarsia’, which was first practised in Islamic North Africa in the seventh century before spreading across Europe during the Renaissance. Intarsia is a woodworking technique that is similar to marquetry and uses pieces of wood of different size, shape and species to create a picture which is like a mosaic but with an illusion of depth. Starting in a small attic workshop on the second floor of his parents’ house at the age of 21, with limited equipment and a growing fascination with birds, Tom began to create life size intarsia birds which soon grabbed the attention of gallery owners and potential customers. Before long it was time to upgrade his machines to allow him to create the things he knew he was capable of. After realising that the floor of his parents’ attic wouldn’t support the weight of the machines he needed, Tom found himself a workshop to rent in an old textiles factory which is perfect for his work as the long row of windows in the roof flood the space in natural light. Tom’s work, which is currently available at a number of galleries across the UK, is often described by people who see it as “mind-blowing”, “totally unique” and “absolutely stunning”. He has also had pieces commissioned from as far away as Australia. Tom’s interest in birds has continued to grow and grow. In his spare time, when he manages to tear himself away from his workshop, which he describes as his “happy place”, Tom can be found in the Nottinghamshire countryside with his camera taking photos of the many different bird species that live there. In particular, a female buzzard he has nicknamed “Stella”, who is easily identifiable due to the fact that she’s enormous and usually has two male companions who escort her around the Nottinghamshire countryside. In the future, Tom plans to see if he can adapt the skills he has learned by making birds and feathers to make wooden butterflies and moths. Many of which use “woody” colours as camouflage, making them the perfect subject for Tom’s particular style of sculpture. T.A.G. Smith www.tagsmith.co.uk

The Dartmoor Baker

based on the successful Dartmoor Stove R ange, has an integral oven above the fire box, which utilises heat from the fire to cook , bake or warm food. The father-and-son team, Michael and Simon Chew, are so proud of their Devon heritage that Dean Forge’s entire handcrafted range is named after Devon beauty spots. The Dartmoor Baker adds to the existing Hembury, Croft, Huccaby, Foxworthy, Herrick, Junior and Clearburn ranges. Simon Chew explains: “The idea to incorporate an oven into our traditional wood burner came from wanting to bring that sociable sharing-style of cooking of barbeques and campfires inside the home. The stove is compact and will sit nicely into any living space. In my home we love toasting crumpets, whilst enjoying the heat of the fire. It is also great for hot pots, as we can leave the dish to slow cook whilst we are out on a family walk; then it’s ready on our return, once we have worked up an appetite. “The oven vents are specially designed to draw any cooking smells up the chimney. Our talented team creates beautiful stoves in a traditional way, but with the latest stove technology, so that you can enjoy the dual benefits of a wood burner and stove in one.

Fact File Prices start at £1095 RRP for the Baker 5 and £1198 RRP for Multi-fuel. Available colours: Black, Aubergine, Grey, Champagne, Charcoal, Dory Blue, Mushroom, Honey Glow Brown and Firecracker. The Dartmoor Baker comes in three models; the compact Baker 5 (5kW nominal output); the Baker W5 (5kW nominal output) and the Baker 8 (8kW nominal output). Vents in the Dartmoor Bakers oven allow the cooking smells and condensation to be drawn out of the oven and up the chimney. There is also a removable cleaning plate located inside the oven and three shelf height options. Both the Baker 5 and Baker W5 are approved for use in smoke-controlled areas with a DEFRA kit fitted. All the Dartmoor Bakers can be manufactured with an extended stove top. Dean Forge stoves are stocked at 80 other UK outlets – see www.deanforge.co.uk/dealer-locator/ for locations.

Both the heaters and the wireless Ijaz system can be installed by anyone, avoiding costly plumbing or electrical bills.

Every BEHA panel heater can be made remotely controllable with the insertion of a special aerial receiver module which allows the user friendly touch screen ‘Ijaz’ controller to alter the heat emitted and turn the unit off and on. The heaters can be controlled individually or collectively in up to sixteen separate ‘zones’. They can also be easily set to heat only when required, ensuring lower fuel bills and minimal waste of energy. The result is a modern, flexible, easy to install and environmentally friendly alternative to old fashioned wet central heating systems. In

The Stunning Chateau Gutsch In Switzerland By Marty n Lawr e nce B u l l a rd

Chateau Gutsch is one of the most famous landmarks in Switzerland. This magnificent hotel was built on the site of an 18th century manor house and hunting lodge in 1884. The style was inspired by the mad king Ludwig II’s Bavarian fantasy castles and due to its imposing scale can be seen from every angle from the beautiful city of Lucerne. The 50,000 sq ft castle-like structure boasts breathtaking views over the lake Lucerne and the famous mountains that surround it. Originally a vacation destination for Queen Victoria, Lucerne is steeped in history and it IS that very history that inspired the dÊcor.

Martyn designed the castle with a Gustavian-style palette that was popular in Switzerland in the late 19th century. For the Ritterstahl, the 19th century panelling was stripped of years of paint and given a distressed, waxed and painted finish that looks original. He added a Swiss style fireplace as the original had been long replaced with a radiator and embraced original Swiss art depicting bucolic scenes to retain the innate historic values of this room. The grand entrance is covered in paper backed fabrics added to the original panelling in an 18th century Swiss document fabric that Schumacher reproduced for Martyn in a local 100 year old Swiss fabric mill. For the ancestor bar, named by Martyn due to grouping all the historic oil paintings of Swiss nobles from the castles original collection together in this space, has breathtaking panoramic views over the city and lake. Martyn gold leafed the ceiling to create a glamorous vibe at night and a beautiful reflection during the day and also repositioned the bar to the back of the room and added mirrors to reflect in the views. The Adras Ikat wallpaper which is custom- designed by Martyn, adds an exotic flavor, whilst still in traditional colors with a strong pattern, giving an unexpected accent to the room.

The 27 guest rooms and suites have been decorated in fresh blues, duck egg greens, soft lilacs and sunshine yellows to keep the palette fresh and timeless. Many fabrics and wall coverings come from Martyn’s own collections and were customised for the spaces. French painted Louis IV furniture mixed with Gustavian and Swiss antiques and the wall art depicts historic views and scenes from the Gutsch’s archives. Specialty suites like the Queen Victoria suite have been decorated in a grand, yet inviting style, with many unexpected twists such as a romantic claw footed bath tub floating in the centre of the room, surrounded by meters of fabrics. Antique oil paintings, a gilded four poster bed and soft upholstery complete the look. In the Majorelle suite a Moroccan fantasy prevails complete with a tented ceiling for the bedroom and ottoman style banquette seating in the sitting room. All rooms have been equipped with top of the line mattresses and fine, high thread count sheeting.

120

The client’s billionaire business and media moguls Alexander Lebedev and his son Evgeny Lebedev wanted to restore the chateau to its former glory, whilst being respectful to the Swiss history and imposing architecture. The design brief was to create a world class boutique hotel environment with modern day luxury and old world charm. The public spaces are to be enjoyed by the locals, the Swiss visitors and tourists alike, whilst honouring the past and the important role the Gutsch has played in Lucerne’s history. Its first grand hotel is once again the most important and imposing hotel in Lucerne and again a true Swiss Mecca of style and service.

The NJP Work Light

Louis Poulsen launched the new Work Light as a result of a partnership with Japanese design company Nendo, and designer Oki Sato at Milan. But this new interpretation of the architect lamp is just as much at home in the bedroom as in the office. Versatility and an intuitive understanding of how the lamp is used have been key themes in Oki Sato’s work. The head is shaped to make it easy to adjust the lamp and switch it on and off using one hand. The two arms provide great movement and many stepless positioning options. One elegant detail is that the shade head is open at the rear, so that reflected light from the LED light source is utilised to illuminate the top section of the arm. A decorative – and practical – detail which allows the angle of the shade head in relation to the arm to be steplessly adjusted via a ball joint. The opening also improves the thermal conditions for the LED light source, thereby helping ensure a long lifetime. NJP Table will be available in the stores in September. Available in black or white. The recommended retail price is £325.00

Cafe Murano The rich, warm palette and blend of wood, leather and marble inside the new Angela Hartnett restaurant CafĂŠ Murano give the place a comfortable, homely Italian atmosphere. A studied, sophisticated nonchalance. The Athens and Carrara table tops, provided by furniture supplier UHS Group, bring a touch of first class dining, balanced by the brass band around the edge of the wooden tops.

Beautiful dark navy and burnt red leathers decorate the banquette seating, and a simple sprinkle of modern colour is added to the space with the green and yellow upholstery on the Tobi chairs and bar stools. CO L O U R S A D D N E W D I M E N S IONS TO D E S I G N E R R A D I A T O RS To paraphrase the famous quip by Henry Ford traditionally you could have radiators in “any colour so long as it was white”. Stelrad now offers many of its models in up to 35 different colours – with a small delivery waiting time – but a time wait that is well worth it to get exactly the right colours and shades for interior décor purposes, whether to match or contrast with other décor. The huge range of colours that many products are available in, brings a new range of options for heating your home in colour. From stylish pastels to forceful sepias, greys, blacks and metallics – there are a range of options for anyone. And whilst variations of white will always be the best sellers, the increase in coloured radiators we’re seeing on the market says something special about the options available and the people out there choosing them for their homes and designs. Next time you are buying radiators, consider the benefits of specifying coloured radiators – these days, if it’s right for the project, you can genuinely ‘heat a rainbow’. Go to www.stelrad.com for more details.

Energy Saving Refurbishment with Remmers iQ Therm System

10

The listed 19th Century former Schoolhouse overlooking the Dublin mountains was renovated and extended to create a new energy efficient residential family home.

So that the exterior facade of the existing property was not altered in any way, internal insulation was installed to the interior of the stone walls of the original house. Due to the build up of condensation behind conventional insulation when applied to single leaf construction, it became apparent that a “breathable insulation system” would be required. Remmers IQ Therm was chosen as it has the highest level of insulation for given thickness of breathable systems. The original U-value of the wall was approx 3.3W/m2K and was improved to 0.33W/m2K. Remmers IQ Therm is a complete system of fixing/insulation and finishing available in 3 board thicknesses. The renovation was followed on RTEs “Room to Improve” house renovation show with Architect Dermot Bannon. www.remmers.co.uk

21 How hotel bathroom designs are missing the mark

23

Arnold added, “When I am staying away from home I want both ease of use and accessibility. I don’t want to feel as if I am at a hospital appointment as I have enough of those. When I am away from home I want to relax in nice surroundings both in public areas and my bedroom. This research shows that we need a new era in the building of accessible bedrooms otherwise we are laying up issues that will be around for the next 10 to 20 years and then the UK hotel economy will be unable to take advantage of the huge market opportunity for accessible tourism that exists.” To find out more about HEWI visit www.hewi.com.

Architectural glazing specialist, D R Services, is well known for the production and installation of glazed balustrades. The company helps architects and interior designers to create visually dramatic staircases, balconies, bridges and atrium elevations.

Director of D R Services, Julie Jarvis, comments: “As with most of our work all of our glass balustrades are bespoke to suit the customer’s requirements, though they tend to feature 32 mm thick laminated glass with three sheets of toughened glass and two interlayers. “The glass itself is held in the plastic Iso-Shoe (spelling) extrusion with a tapered aluminium wedge being used to secure it - while this can be demounted again if required. The shoe is normally covered by a brushed stainless steel cap, but it can be cloaked with any metal, either coloured or with an architectural finish. There is virtually no limit to what we can offer customers in terms of glass balustrades.” For further information, please call D R Services on 01279 445277, e-mail info@drservices.co.uk or look at website www.drservices.co.uk.

Handcrafted multi-layer wooden wallcoverings: 3D shaped panels becoming vertical sculptures

31

MOKO is built upon the foundations of decades of interior design and manufacturing experience with sculptural wooden surfaces. Its success relies on the merged approach of design and manufacturing, with a constant development of innovative styles and surface finishes increasing the richness of the range. It is this heritage and knowledge that has formed MOKO interior.

MOKO interior uses the best quality materials; only real wood veneers that are custom made for their production. The curved shapes require the highest handicraft that cannot be replaced by any machinery, the real value lays in the bare handed craftsmanship intended to create the highest quality products, excluding mass production in the classic sense. The company’s main goal is to satisfy every client who wishes to have the MOKO vertical sculptures, who require a sensual, unique aesthetic experience in their home, hotel, retail or office space.

Highly progressive, J. Rotherham is a rare breed and offers a truly comprehensive design service and product portfolio, which is now further strengthened by its new industrial partnership with DuPont™ Corian®. TAG H e u er C A R R E R A C a li b re H eu e r 0 1 The B a ckb o n e O f Th e N ew C o lle c t i o n New case, new construction, new design and new calibre. Presenting the TAG Heuer Carrera - Heuer 01. A Manufacture chronograph symbolically christened the Heuer 01 in honour of the founder, Edouard Heuer. 01 because it represents the markedly horological development of the calibre 1887, on which the backbone of the new collection will be based. Its supremely clean new design reveals the chronograph controls and the openworked date disc on the dial side. On the case-back, its red column wheel - a bold visual anchor - the skeleton chronograph bridge and the black weight also draw the eye into the mechanism. The subject of continuous improvement and optimisation over five years, it has attained a very high level of quality while its production costs have been carefully managed, making it the only 100% Manufacture Chronograph available for less than CHF 5000. It features a new generation TAG Heuer case. Made from steel for greater shock resistance, it is constructed differently, no longer the single piece traditionally used by TAG Heuer, but modular with 12 different components. This design opens up a huge range of possibilities, with an infinite combination of materials, colours, treatments and finishes. The piece is completed by a strap in perforated black rubber for a stylish, sporty look highly characteristic of TAG Heuer, yet with a renewed style thanks to its interplay of transparency and depth effects on both sides. Finally, the Carrera Heuer 01 symbolises the continuity in investment and creativity made by TAG Heuer, which has been an avant-garde brand (Swiss Avant-Garde since 1860) since it was founded in 1860, and sincerely wishes to remain so. An investment of our strengths and resources to ensure we remain avant-garde in our spirit, culture and philosophy.
