KREOD
As the international spotlight falls on London this summer, a new architecturally-striking sculpture KREOD – was unveiled on 18 September 2012 at Greenwich Peninsula. KREOD forms the centrepiece of the busy public space, Peninsula Square between the Emirates Air Line and The O2 Arena – the official venue for the London 2012 Olympic Gymnastics, Basketball Finals and Wheelchair Basketball. The brainchild of Chun Qing Li, Managing Director of Pavilion Architecture, KREOD is an innovative architectural sculpture, organic in form, environmentally-friendly and inspired by nature. Resembling three seeds, these three 20m2 pods combine through a series of interlocking hexagons to create an enclosed structure that is not only magnificently-intricate but secure and weatherproof. KREOD functions beautifully both as an architectural landmark and an imaginative exhibition space – its three pods can be combined in a variety of configurations or installed as free-standing forms.
London’s newest architectural landmark unveiled at Greenwich Peninsula
Using state-of-the-art parametric design tools and digital fabrication, KREOD brings together some of the most talented designers, engineers and innovative materials to challenge current thinking and showcase sustainable and forward-thinking building methods. Structural engineers Ramboll UK worked alongside geometry consultant Evolute, AR18 and Tensilefabric to deliver this unique eyecatching structure. Constructed of Kebony - the award-winning sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and preservative treated wood – the wooden structure of KREOD is durable, resistant, sustainable, environmentally-friendly, easily-maintained and beautifully aesthetic. KREOD is the latest UK showcase for Norwegian Global Cleantech 100 company Kebony AS, which is rapidly becoming the choice of leading architects, builders and developers. Commenting on the launch of KREOD, Chun Qing Li, Managing Director of Pavilion Architecture says: “Architecture is our passion; KREOD pavilion is a great showcase of a
sustainable and forward thinking building method in the digital age, offering a new way of thinking, designing, engineering, and construction. KREOD pavilion considers the environment and the lifecycle of the design work; the choice of material is a simple, honest, eco-friendly Kebony timber. KREOD will become an indoor/outdoor feature i.e office meeting pod, garden feature or bike shed which is a sustainable way to extend the life of the pavilion beyond the exhibition.” Jan Terje Nielsen, Marketing Director of Kebony comments: “We feel privileged to have worked in a team with extremely skilled young architects to demonstrate Kebony`s abilities in such advanced architecture. We are confident that the KREOD pavilion will be a movable landmark on the London architectural scene, and also that the extreme shapes will be recognized on the global arena.” KREOD will be located next to Peninsula Square, between Emirates Air Line and The O2 at Greenwich Peninsula until 14 October 2012. Following this, KREOD will be popping up at high-profile locations across the primary locations within the city of London.

NEW ECO-HOTEL LAUNCHED IN NOTTINGHAM, WITH CONTEMPORARY INTERIORS DESIGNED BY
GRAVEN IMAGES www.graven.co.uk The University of Nottingham’s first four-star hotel venture has launched, with stylish, contemporary interiors designed by Graven Images. Set in 330 acres of lush landscapes and adjacent to the East Midlands Conference Centre, the Orchard Hotel is an eco-friendly purpose built venue designed for both business and leisure visitors. The £20 million hotel is equipped with photovoltaic panels and energyefficient systems to help reduce carbon emissions and maximise the use of natural sources of energy. Throughout the interiors, Graven Images has introduced a contemporary design, which complements the bold exterior by RHWL Architects. Features and materials used reflect the immediate natural surroundings, with extensive use of timber, a warm colour scheme of earthy tones across all furnishings, and wallpaper produced from photographs taken of the neighbouring woodland. Highlights of the 202-room hotel include a spacious and multi-functional lobby housed in an impressive atrium flooded with natural light. Within this space are several geometrical pieces of furniture; a reception desk made of English oak; a library; and a freestanding bar situated
between the reception area and the 120-seat brasserie-style restaurant. Public areas across the ground level have been embellished with art and crafts designed by independent artists discovered at an exhibition held at Nottingham’s Lakeside Arts Centre. Along with various objects, such as books and plates, several collections of intricate pieces were especially commissioned to represent the hotel’s ethos, natural surroundings and location.
made of recycled yoghurt pots and reclaimed materials. The traditional methods implemented, the materials used, and the contemporary aesthetic fit particularly well with the hotel’s style and sustainable context. Founding Director commented:

Among the selected works for the hotel reception area are 25 illustrative ceramic and photographic pieces designed by award-winning Nottingham artist Anna Collette Hunt. Her work for The Orchard Hotel includes unique wall plates and dishes, some of which are inspired by natural history. These pieces are complemented by a series of hand-made plates and jugs with nature-themed motifs by Ken Eardley, a ceramics specialist with a background in textiles.
“Our vision for The Orchard Hotel was to create a contemporary, upscale venue suited to the social and working needs of the nearby East Midlands Conference Centre, located at Nottingham University. “The main concept of the design was to relate the interiors to the surrounding parkland of Nottingham University campus, one of the largest and most attractive in the country, and to complement the sustainable architecture of the hotel. At the same time the interiors needed to be accessible and hard-working, supporting the social and functional needs of this most international of Universities.”
Finally, Sarah Thirlwell’s hand-turned wooden pieces complete the selection of commissioned artwork on display at The Orchard Hotel. Placed in the library, her vessels and vases are
“For the final touches, we worked with a selection of artists to produce decorative pieces reflective of Nottingham’s longstanding arts and crafts culture”. Enq 301

Al-Sumaria Headquarters 3,000 m2 Mansourieh, Lebanon 2007
This modern day Sumerian temple is home to a television station, and can be found in the most unlikely of places: the suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon. A model of minimalism, this modern garden creates a tranquil and peaceful environment for employees and clients alike, while also exuding a Babylonian aura of style and luxury. Before embarking on this project there was one simple precondition: to make the lobby an integral part of the garden. As such, the relationship between the garden and the building were to be central to the entire project. The entrance is a glass box that extends from the building and reaches into the Japanese inspired green minimalism of its garden. Crowning this lobby is a roof garden to guarantee that no green space is lost, and allowing it to merge with the garden in a three dimensional way. As the headquarters of a major TV station, the building is host to hundreds of people who work there, as well as visit it on a daily basis and their only access in is through the garden. Creating mazelike pathways and avoiding a straight and overly efficient walk permits this relatively small garden to unfold and whisper its secrets as wanderers stroll through. It also defines and reinforces the relationship between the wanderer and the garden, and between the garden and the building, reinforcing the relationship between two worlds. Graphic and manicured, the plants resemble that of architectural features in their precision, geometry and color. They dot the landscape and accompany the visitor to the lobby, where two truncated pyramids with water reflecting surfaces seem to welcome and leave visitors with a sense of awe walking between the Tigris and the Euphrates. Overall, the true luxury of the Al-Sumaria headquarters lies in its green space. The location of the building was chosen precisely for its access to a garden, and a full understanding that a well-designed green space is a true luxury in today’s hustle bustle of the corporate world. The creation of an entrance to the work space that is serene and soothing proves that landscaping can truly improve the work environment. Enq 304

MACO Tricoat surface technology has exceeded the industry standards in defence against corrosion, since it was first introduced five years ago. MACO set the benchmark for protecting fittings and has maintained its place at the forefront of technology with the revolutionary Tricoat surface finish, which remains unsurpassed. Unlike other products, MACO has not relied solely on using existing materials, such as stainless steel, it recognised that every part of the product had to be protected with a coating that is resilient in the most demanding environments. Bimetallic corrosion and leakage of acid from timber frames are no longer a problem, as the Tricoat finish protects the entire fitting. MACO Tricoat has such high corrosion resistance that it is the first choice for housing in densely populated areas. The coating not only prevents rusting and corrosion, but the fine particles that make up the outer layer are scratch-resistant and have the added advantage of repelling dirt and water. The multi-layered coating protects in the most challenging areas, from industrial sites with chemical emissions, to swimming pools with high levels of chlorine. Wherever the best finish is required, the 15-year MACO Protect guarantee ensures lasting results. For more information contact email us enquiry@macouk.net

free resource that rainwater represents, storing it and pumping it to the point of use when it’s needed. Instantly, the need for mains water is dramatically reduced. So are water bills. Rainstream from Polypipe Building Products is predominantly targeted at domestic installations but can be used in light commercial applications too. Rainwater harvesting can replace up to 50% of household mains water consumption, and up to 85% on commercial installations. Visit www.polypipe.com and see how rainwater harvesting can work for you.
For the cost saving and environmentally minded, the new diverter handles a substantially greater flow and fits larger downpipes than before. It’s much more efficient and accommodating. The top section now handles round pipes up to 80ml and square pipes up to 75ml with ease. In fact, it suits most downpipes within the UK – and beyond. With an automatic overflow and a mesh insert for fine filtration, this really is the answer for top water recycling and efficiency. The Gutter Mate 2 rain water diverter is the perfect addition to rain water harvesting systems. Using the fine mesh insert allows saved water to be used inside the home (such as washing machines, toilet flushing) as well as outside (car washing, garden irrigation). Leading taps valves and fittings manufacturer Pegler Yorkshire is introducing a new and improved version of its Union Angle Valve that is used in its Thermostatic Mixing Valves. The growing value these products are now presenting in the UK Health Care and commercial market is supported by the convenience for servicing and maintenance at the point of use. Pegler Yorkshire has experienced huge success amongst specifiers and installers with its Prestex Thermostatic Mixing Values since their launch three years ago. Attributed primarily to features such as inlet port protectors which prevent debris entering the valve prior to installation and a unique bar code for production trace ability and quality tracking. The company is now utilising this knowledge and understanding of market requirements by including an additional feature in its new Prestex TMV Union Angle version. Angle valves allow for the supply of hot and cold water to the Prestex TMV and boast standard features such as isolation for water supply, non- return valves for prevention of cross flow, removable filters for protection of the sensitive thermostatic element and test points for use when pressure and temperature measurements are required. Plus the union angle TMV valve allows flexibility in the connection with a 360 degrees rotation. The newly introduced Union Angle TMV boasts an additional feature - a locking capability in the closed position. The main advantage for this addition is that water supplies can be turned off and secured so that they cannot subsequently be turned on and therefore exposing the risk of scalding or even water wastage when the TMV is being serviced or replaced. This new valve developed by Pegler Yorkshire offers real benefits for installers, while at the same time providing for ease of maintenance. The locking function can be particularly useful in the commercial sector, where preventing unauthorised operation of the valve can also be a factor. “Thermostatic Mixing Valves with Union Angle Valves are a popular product in the industry but by incorporating this new feature into our already highly engineered valves I believe installers and specifiers will certainly see the additional benefits,” said Pegler Yorkshire Product Market Manager Barrie Plant.

Home is where the heat is George Pickard, FCIOB, of the Precast Flooring Federation gives a timely reminder “Failure to build to the Salford standard will impose a massive unnecessary burden on national energy resources that will be carried forward well into the next century.” So said Report No. ED 179/59 published by the Energy Efficiency Office in 1987 on pioneering energy-saving house building in Salford. Yet 35 years later, this ‘Salford standard’ has gone largely unseen and unused, and it has taken a new report – The Salford low-energy house: learning from our past – to reveal the opportunities that are still being largely overlooked.
Central to their design is a high thermal capacity internal structure protected by an insulated, well-sealed envelope. The high thermal mass is provided by constructing internal walls of dense concrete blocks with beam-and-block suspended concrete floors. The result is a thermal capacity about four times the norm, enabling maximum use to be made of incidental gains, reducing temperature fluctuations and permitting a range of heating strategies. This contrasts with lightweight houses, such as most timber-framed structures, that can have a thermal capacity around a quarter of traditional values and so can suffer large temperature variations. Initially, the Council built a pair of two-bedroom semi-detached houses, followed by a prototype terrace of four houses and two flats. After detailed monitoring, they went on to build a further 200 or so dwellings. Unfortunately, changes to housing policy in the 1980s brought the number of homes built by local authorities to an effective stop and so the City Council built no more. But elsewhere in Salford, a private builder adopted the design for a small estate of about 50 flats and houses and a local housing association incorporated the principles in a sheltered housing development.
With the industry busy working towards the near-zerocarbon demands of the forthcoming Code for sustainable homes, the rediscovery of this pioneering work carried out in 1976 has surprised many. The brainchild of Dr J E Randell at The University of Salford, and J M A Hoyle, an architect with Salford City Council, the revolutionary houses have since been shown to require an energy consumption about 25% of that of the general UK housing stock and less than 60% of current Building Regulations.
Thirty-six years later, it seems strange that the Salford experience did not become widely known and was not implemented to any extent by the private sector even though the excellent performance was publicised by a 1987 report and an article in Building Services and Environmental Engineer in 1979. A possible explanation for this can be found in the anecdotal evidence from contemporary private developers that it was difficult to sell the houses without central heating installed, as potential buyers considered that they lacked an essential amenity.

With these timely reminders from Salford, house builders are reassessing designs. At the same time, the Precast Flooring Federation is renewing its drive to expand the use of precast concrete flooring to all levels of the house-building industry. Combined with blockwork internal partitions, precast flooring adds to the thermal mass along with the additional benefit of excellent acoustic performance.

Timber Composite Cladding Offers Eco-friendly Credentials Stuart Burns, Director of Dura Composites, looks at how investing heavily in environmentally-friendly materials at the outset has minimised the impact of the downturn over the past few years. There are cynics that said that a timber composite could not be as green as natural wood but this simply isn’t true.

The eco-credentials of Dura Cladding were a selling point for Darin Shaikly, Managing Director of Lanswood Ltd, when specifying products for his Lanswoodpark development in Essex: “The use of high-end, eco-friendly and sustainable building materials has been at the heart of this project right from the very beginning. RigiSystems in the Space Age The new 1,800 sq metre Aerospace Technology Centre at Nottingham University provides a dedicated research and information exchange facility within the Institute for Aerospace Technology. It also provides a showcase for RigiSystems Ziplok standing seam profile with MicroZink finish in a roof to wall application which perfectly complements the space age nature of the project. MicroZink provides all the performance benefits of aluminium with the aesthetic appeal of a traditional zinc roof. The coating even changes colour and gloss over time in almost exactly the same way as pure zinc, yet in all other respects the profiles behave in the same way as standard aluminium.

Protecta embarks on extensive programme of UK certification for key products in its passive fire protection range. Dave Oram, Sales Manager
Protecta, a leading supplier of passive fire protection solutions, has embarked on an extensive test programme to ensure that its products are fully compliant to the latest stringent UK standards. The company's three core products; EX Mortar, FR Acrylic and FR Board have all received full certification in the last month, along with complementary products such as collars and wraps that were tested as an integral part of the penetration seal testing. Both these initial tests and the planned twelve month programme of testing of the wider range will be carried out by Exova Warrington fire. By the end of the programme it is envisaged that another 24 products from the range will have been awarded full certification. Commenting on the certification programme, Dave Oram, International Sales Manager at Protecta, said; “The majority of our products already carry full European test certification. By investing in this additional programme of rigorous testing we will give specifiers, contractors and installers complete peace of mind and the knowledge that the products they are using not only meet, but in many cases exceed, the minimum performance requirements. There is no room for compromise or uncertainty when it comes to fire protection.” “To date we have only tested a few products from Protecta's range for CERTIFIRE Approval but from the results obtained and in view of what I have seen in the laboratories this appears to be a robust and high performing range of products that will be a welcome addition to the UK market,” commented Chris Johnson, Principal Certification Engineer, Warrington Certification Limited. In addition to the high performance of the products tested to date there is an added cost benefit to installers that comes from the ease of installation which reduces the amount of labour hours required on site. Examples of the recent test results include: !

EX Mortar achieves EI 120 with steel pipe 219mm diameter at a depth of 50mm (most other products require a 100mm depth). FR Acrylic achieves EI90 (E240) on cable penetration 14mm diameter, from one side only FR Board achieves EI240 with a maximum size opening of 2400mm x 1200 mm
Products from the Protecta range are currently being used on over 70 percent of all commercial and public buildings in Norway, including the Royal Castle and Opera House in Oslo, and over 50 percent of a similar market in Denmark and Sweden.
