ROMSEY ROAD WINCHESTER
H
ampshire based AR Design Studio’s brief, of a luxurious 5 bedroom house efurbishment in the city of Winchester, was to create a sense of space and calm in the tight and complicated layout. By extending at the rear on first floor we replaced two single bedrooms with two master bedrooms with en suites, as well as liberating space to create a new double height dramatic entrance and stairs leading to a wide functional landing and a new family bathroom. The palette of materials used is limited and muted, white and grey render and tiles to make the experience of the house that of a calm play between spaces and light. On the ground floor we doubled the kitchen and dining area to create our signature minimal open living space, this is fully glazed on to the external glass-covered patio. Our concept was to create continuity between the two rooms by using the same floor material, flush thresholds and
structural glass to cover the external patio. By designing an oversized structural frame at the end of the covered patio we strongly marked the end of this space to create the illusion that the internal living space extends to the external limit of the covered patio. This ambiguous internal and external space creates vitality, in the tradition of modernist spaces like that of Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona pavilion.
On the garden elevation both the client and planners supported us in creating a strong visual identity, which is expressed by the simple play of a dark grey box (the first floor bedrooms) jutting out of the ground floor’s white render and glass structure. A simple but radical look.

Composite timber Cladding Stuart Burns, Director at Dura Composites, looks at a real life case study where composite timber cladding has been used to renovate the look of an older office and factory building. eciding on a look for a new build or renovation can be a seriously stressful experience for the end client, whether they be a self builder or a multinational organisation. Many wrestle with the dilemma of using modern materials for a sleek and fresh look or the use traditional materials such as wood. Whilst natural wood cladding represents a sizeable chunk of the wall cladding and façade market place, it is an area that must be fully understood if you are to achieve the look you want for a long period of time. That is because most timber cladding will fade significantly and begin to rot over time unless it is treated with the appropriate paint or stain at regular intervals.
d
An alternative to using natural timber comes in the form of a fast growing new product made using timber composites. That is where natural timber is used within a composite mix to create a material that is more suited
to battling the elements over an extended life cycle in all weather conditions. Dura Cladding is one such product on the market where selected recycled wood and recycled high density polyethylene is used to create a cladding range that offer the natural appearance of wooden cladding but without the hassle or expense of periodic maintenance to preserve the wood. Timber composite cladding still represents a tiny margin of the overall market, and UK suppliers are few and far between, but it seems key decision makers are finally realising its’ true value for new builds or refurbishments. One of the main points to note for the ecominded is that a quality timber composite product like Dura Cladding can be just as green as wood, if not more. A report from CERAM UK confirmed that Dura Cladding meets the highest sustainability specifications. It is made of 87% recycled materials, and was the first timber composite supplier to become FSC ® 100% certified.
Whereas traditional wood planks require regular painting or staining to preserve their natural beauty and protect them, UV inhibitors can be added to a quality timber composite at the point of manufacture to protect against the elements. Another thing to remember when choosing a supplier is that the best ones offer warranties of up to 25 years – at least a decade longer than the life-cycle of the average hardwood alternative. Quality timber composite cladding is further characterised by the fact that it won’t crack, shrink, warp or rot. To illustrate how Dura Cladding can be used both traditionally and also in a more contemporary format, the Dura premises were recently fitted with the recently launched 150/21 Weatherboard product in Barn Black for the main factory and 200/21 Flush in Pale Grey for the more contemporary office building at the front of the premises. The series of photos taken during the installation help illustrate not only how relatively simple the material is to install for professionals, but also how much of a transformation can be accomplished across a large area with a relatively small outlay. Most visitors to the premises do not believe that natural wood has not be used to create a such a traditional barn look, and are excited about the prospect of having little maintenance to do and are attracted by the fact that according to accelerated UV test results, the material will retain the vast proportion of its colour throughout its 25 year design life. Aesthetics are always subjective and can be a highly emotive subject for the façade of a building. What is not subjective though is life cycle costs. Due to the lack of maintenance required, and the long design life, although composite cladding purchase costs may be higher than some natural wood cladding, it can actually work out significantly cheaper when life cycle costs are considered. Being 87% recycled and available as FSC © 100% the green aspect is thoroughly covered as well.

GREENBUILD, ORGANISERS OF GREENBUILD EXPO 2014 LAUNCH A NEW SUSTAINABILITY CAMPAIGN
G
Greenbuild, the organisers of Greenbuild Expo 2014 are launching a new sustainability campaign The Greenbuild Challenge.
Supported by UK Green Building Council and the Energy Saving Trust, the campaign aims to engage, educate and inspire professionals in the building and sustainability sectors to create a truly sustainable built environment. The built environment has huge potential in shaping our sustainable future. The buildings we live in, work in and relax in – and how we inhabit and interact with them – are a key part of a sustainable lifestyle. Professionals responsible for the design, function and performance of volume housing
and non-domestic properties such as schools and hospitals have a huge role to play. To get involved with the campaign visit www.greenbuildchallenge.co.uk You will be able to make a pledge to take more action to improve a building – and see the pledges and real-life improvements others have already made.
Rise to the challenge, be inspired and get involved at Greenbuild Expo 2014
Switching to LED Lighting – using 40 LED bulbs in a house for an average of 2.7 hours a day – the Energy Saving Trust’s typical use figure for a bulb in a kitchen or living room – running costs would be £23 annually compared with £287 for sticking with halogens ! Installing a bike rack - encourage staff at your office to ditch their cars – meaning healthier employees and a reduced carbon footprint ! Reducing artificial light - daylight has a better impact on performance. Good daylight in schools leads to a 10% in crease in overall pupil performance: 20% faster progression in mathematics and 26% faster reading progression.
Focal points of the campaign include: sustainable retrofitting; behavioural change; building materials and methods; and smart cities. As part of the Greenbuild Challenge these issues will be explored through debate at the Greenbuild Expo event in May and via comment pieces and examples of best practice through the Greenbuild magazine and online onwww.greenbuildnews.co.uk Paul King, CEO of the UK Green Building Council, said: “It’s encouraging to see that the Greenbuild Expo is launching a new campaign aiming to promote sustainable changes in buildings. The Greenbuild Challenge aims to educate and inspire people to make their buildings better by calling on building owners to pledge to make a change to their properties, no matter how big or small, from a major green retrofit in a block of flats, to installing energy efficient lighting in offices.” Chris Eldridge from Greenbuild said: “Working with organisations such as UK GBC and EST, the Greenbuild Challenge aims to raise the debate around sustainability in the built environment. We will continue the debate at this year’s Greenbuild Expo with a great seminar programme – all free to attend Greenbuild Expo in Manchester on 7th & 8th May 2014 at Manchester Central www.greenbuildexpo.co.uk
Towards a new suburbia
bramhall blenkharn architects
H
arrogate, Yorkshire. A not so grim northern spa town, genteel and resplendent, it oozes wealthy suburbia, and is home to the many migrant workers of nearby Leeds. Within this context, we were approached by a couple and their two teenage boys to design a new home in deepest suburbia. They had chosen an existing 1920’s house on a large plot, with a view to its replacement by a contemporary new home. I asked my clients to tell me of their lifestyle and to produce a board of images. The geologist and industrialist, offered a stair cantilevered from a curving wall. They talked of ammonites, and white render. Of clean open spaces, of sunshine and a private garden. Of separation from boisterous boys. Armed with this brief I went home one weekend with a bag of modeling materials, and
the model presented to an enthusiastic response. Some 2 years later, following appeal, thick snow and belligerence, a new model of suburbia has been formed. The house acknowledges both orientation and neighbours. It is closed and private on the public roadside, and opens to a glazed south facing façade overlooking the private garden. A large 3 storey ashlar curved wall dissects the building, separating family and parent spaces, from the boy’s bedrooms. The wall is thick – drums are beaten in one of the bedrooms! Curving round this wall is the feature spine staircase, overlooking the principal living area. The stone wall peels away into a cellar like staircase, plunging into the basement. A large glazed rooflight illuminates a double height space, traversed by a glass bridge. The spaces flow from one to another. The house is modest in size, a mere 350 sqm, yet it seems larger.
A large 3 storey ashlar curved wall dissects the building, separating family and parent spaces.
>>
>> The 4metre high windows of the living area maximize contact with the garden. The project raised issues with neighbours and the conservative planning committee, leading to initial refusal – in spite of officer support. The appeal decision was wonderful in praise, and now on completion, the locals seem placated and satisfied. All is well in suburbia. Whilst Harrogate is perhaps not the norm, in terms of wealth and populace, it is typical of a number of English towns. It is great to have achieved something new and fresh. Something individual and contextual. Using a palette of local materials, perhaps a new suburbia has emerged. The chance to preen of one neighbour next to another. The Jones’? Who are they?
The locals seem placated and satisfied. All is well in suburbia.

Eco-Slab beats Climate Change!
Eco-Slab, the most Modern Method of Construction for creating concrete ground floor slabs, both suspended and ground bearing, has been the base for the most eco efficient houses built in the UK. Four 80 metre 3 bed, houses built 15 months ago by Beattie Passive in Scotland, had a 12 month heating bill of £107. That’s just £2.00 a week, through one of the toughest winters in a decade. This follows another Eco-Slab floored 120 m2 house in Chewton Mendip, Somerset that has a four year monitored total energy consumption of 41kwh per m2 p.a. where renewables were barred by conservation regulations. Eco-Slab costs one third less to install, ready for concreting, than block and beam, in one twelfth of the time. Eco-Slab’s insulating and airtightness are the ultimate for reducing heat loss from concrete ground floors. Manufactured by “Jablite, ”the largest polystyrene construction producer in the UK, Eco-Slab’s quality is undoubted.
Eco-Slab is being used by local authorities in retrofit floors, to help reduce heating bills by as much 80%, in Victorian buildings. For further information visit – www.eco-slab.com

SWA Member Helps Restore Brighton Station Terminating opposite its famous beach, close by the pierl, Brighton’s railway station is part of the resort’s most recognisable structures, and an important part of its architectural heritage. When it came to undertaking significant refurbishment work to the building, local conservation officers sought to restore the elements involved to their original splendour, which has led to a member of the Steel Window Association supplying a large number of arch topped doorsets and windows for the work. London based Govette Windows was awarded the contract, they surveyed all of the openings before beginning fabrication using the W20 steel sections, which were hot dip galvanized and given a white polyester powder coat paint finish. Conservation issues dictated the use of single glazing which was all cut from 6.4 mm laminated safety glass. Visit – www.steel-window-association-co.uk

Secured by Design in action These images from Express Garage Doors in Dunfermline, graphically demonstrate the break in resistance of Hörmann sectional garage doors. The Hörmann LPU garage door clearly resisted significant attempts to break in to this self build project, which was still under construction, and not occupied at the time.
Hörmann – appealing to tHe Head and tHe Heart
H
Hörmann is committed to working with architects, designers and specifiers as an integral part of its new product development process. Hörmann is constantly evolving and developing solutions that meet practical considerations, so that there is no need to compromise when it comes to the aesthetics and style. Legislation is demanding better insulation and homeowners now list security as a major consideration when it comes to home improvements. Traditionally combining the two is associated with robust or limited design possibilities. However, Hörmann is challenging this perception with a range of garage and entrance doors that deliver on all fronts. As an example, Hörmann automatic sectional garage doors are the first to achieve Police approved Secured by Design status. The accreditation applies to a wide range of automatic insulated and timber doors which include a fully bespoke timber design option. If a more specific look is required other sectional doors in the range include a choice of glazed panel designs and there is even the opportunity to clad a door in a material of your choice
with an open-for-infill frame. One of the key features that make these doors so secure is the unique, mechanical lock that comes as standard with Hörmann Series 3 BiSecur operators. This lock makes it almost impossible to lever the door open and as it uses the BiSecur system, with the same level of encryption that online banks use, it is digitally as well as mechanically secure. Another example of Hörmann utilising its technology and expertise to meet a specific need is the new ThermoCarbon entrance door. This combines a carbon-fibre sub frame and rigid insulation to give the world’s best thermal U-value, perfect for low energy homes. Style is not compromised and with 9 point locking, concealed hinges and a host of security options, this door can meet the most exacting requirements. Matching garage and entrance door combinations also help homeowners and architects to create their own style statements. A range of performance options mean there are Hörmann doors to suit every home, project and budget, whether you are guided by your head or your heart.
www.hormann.co.uk
Callum Dryburgh, sales manager of Express Garage Doors explains what they found on the site visit. “When we arrived we could see the scaffolding plank and pole across the crate as you can see in the picture. The door had obviously withstood a serious attempt to prise it open. The scaffolding plank had splintered under the pressure and examining the inside of the door we estimate they had only managed to prise the door up about six inches. The mechanical lock held firm and both the top and bottom sections were damaged, but they didn’t get in, even with the scaffolding pole.” As well as attempting to lever the garage door open, a concerted effort appears to have been made to break in to the house through the matching Hörmann aluminium entrance door as shown here. In this contest the result was Hörmann 2, burglars nil.

To ensure this style comes without compromising security, Sliders UK now offers its Secured by Design accredited upgrade as a standard specification across its leading range of “Ultimate” UPVC and aluminium bi-folding doors. “For us this is as much about social responsibility as it is about differentiation,” explains Ian Longbottom, Joint Managing Director of Sliders UK. “A burglary through a bi-folding door could potentially allow an intruder to completely empty a property. For this reason we prefer to make our bi-folds truly secure, rather than follow the basic specification that crowds the market.” Sliders UK manufactures three high quality bi-fold products at its state-of-the-art factory in Lancashire, where it also invests £100,000 each year into research and development to ensure all doors provide the highest levels of security. It’s easy to make space for wIldlIfe
ith a growing focus on the need to include sustainability in builds, most developments will at least consider ways of reducing carbon footprint, minimising energy use and recycling water, but what about biodiversity?
w
Vivara Pro make a range of biodiversity products suitable for professional use, including bird nest boxes, bat roost boxes and habitat for other wildlife such as amphibians or insects. Much of the range is made from WoodStone®, a durable mix of concrete and wood fibres that offers excellent thermal insulation and protection from predators. As well as products designed to be fitted to the outside of buildings they also make bird and bat boxes suitable for being “built-in” to the fabric of a wall. This allows biodiversity
to be included into a build unobtrusively, with minimal visual impact on the design, and also provides a more secure environment for the wildlife that uses it. For bats and birds such as Swifts and House Sparrows, buildings are important roosting or nesting habitats. Incorporating space for building-dependent wildlife has been endorsed as good practice by organisations such as the Town and Country Planning Association, the Royal Town Planning Institute and the Chartered Institute of Ecologists and Environmental Managers. Making provision for wildlife may be necessary as a mitigation measure required as a condition of planning consent. It can also help the planning authority to demonstrate that they are meeting their obligations to protect and enhance biodiversity, as required by the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act
2006 and the National Planning Policy Framework. The most valuable products to meet these obligations are build-in Swift nest boxes and build-in bat boxes. Swifts and bats are easily overlooked creatures that create virtually no noise or mess and make unobtrusive guests. An increasing number of developments are including biodiversity in the build to promote a greener image and to provide a more pleasant environment for the end users. Evidence shows that providing access to natural green space and wildlife can improve the health and wellbeing of people at minimal cost. Vivara Pro is a brand of CJ WildBird Foods Ltd, Europe’s leading wildlife specialists, with over 25 years of experience in producing quality products to help wildlife.

GEHRY AND FOSTER UNVEIL LANDMARK DESIGNS FOR PHASE THREE OF BATTERSEA POWER STATION
F
ollowing an international design competition held in September 2013, the two architectural practices were chosen for the bold and innovative designs they had for both new homes and a new pedestrianised retail street in the area to the south of the Power Station. The designs reflect the shareholders’ commitment to creating world-class buildings that will complement the iconic Power Station, while becoming destinations in their own right. The project represents the first permanent development in London by Gehry Partners. Phase Three is a key part of the regeneration of the Battersea site, and will feature a new high street for London, to be known as The Electric Boulevard. This will be the main gateway to the entire Battersea development, connecting the Northern Line Extension station with the Power Station itself, and is at the heart of the vibrant new community being created on the 42-acre site. The third phase will comprise over 1,300 homes in a range of sizes and styles in two zones on either side of the boulevard. In addition, a 160 room hotel and 350,000 sq ft. of retail and restaurant space plus additional leisure space will be delivered as part of the proposals. 103 affordable homes from the total of 517 being provided across the development will also be delivered as part of this third phase.
Gehry Partners is respected for its far-ranging experience in cultural, institutional and commercial projects such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in the practice’s home city of Los Angeles. Gehry Partners has designed the five buildings to the east of The Electric Boulevard, to be known as “Prospect Place” which will house doubleheight retail units at street level, approximately half of the planned residential units, a community park and multi-use community hub. “Prospect Place” will be anchored by the distinctive “Flower” building. The design of the buildings reflects Gehry’s commitment to excellence and dedication to making public and private spaces that feel good for the inhabitants and respect the surrounding context. Foster + Partners’ projects include 30 St Mary Axe (‘the Gherkin’), the British Museum in London and the Reichstag, the new German Parliament in Berlin. Electric Boulevard, to be known as “The Skyline” which undulates along the line of the boulevard, creating a unique building profile. Two floors of retail units will front on to the western side and huge breaks in the façade will allow light through to the public spaces below, while creating amazing gardens in the sky. The top of the entire building is given over to one of London’s largest roof gardens, over a quarter of a kilometre long, with breathtaking views of the Power Station and the city beyond. Housing the other half of the planned residential units, including the 103 units of affordable housing in its southern end, a medical centre and a 160 room hotel at the northern end, “The Skyline” is a prime example of a multi-functional building. Frank Gehry, Founder of Gehry Partners, said: “Our goal from the start has been to create a neighbourhood that connects into the historic fabric of the city of London, but one that has its own identity and
integrity. We have tried to create humanistic environments that feel good to live in and visit.” Ed Vaizey, Culture Minister, said: “Battersea Power Station is an iconic site and the unveiling of this exciting new design by Frank Gehry and Foster + Partners will ensure the development of this former industrial site will put Battersea on the world stage once again. The plans for a new high street for the capital show that London continues to attract the best in terms of architecture, design and innovation.” The Battersea Power Station master plan, designed by Rafael Vinoly, comprises over 3,400 homes as well as offices, shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, community and leisure facilities and 18 acres of open space.

Wigan Youth Zone is at the centre of the community and aims to help young people develop real and achievable aspirations. UZIN products were used to install 600m2 of new safety flooring following a refurbishment of the Youth Centre in 2013. The flooring contractor, iFloor UK Ltd turned to UZIN because minimising risk was essential on such a prestigious project which involved installing an intricate flooring design at the heart of the building. UZIN provide fail safe installation systems and low emission products which are required in sensitive environments such as youth centres. Firstly UZIN PE 280, a rapid primer was first applied to the floor before UZIN NC 160, a heavy duty levelling compound was installed. UZIN KE 66, a fibre reinforced adhesive was then used to install the safety floor covering. The elaborate pattern incorporated different colours and the subsequent finish was outstanding. The feedback from the client was also great and iFloor UK Limited ended up completing several additional areas as a result. www.uzin.co.uk : www.iflooruk.co.uk : www.wiganyouthzone.org Contact UZIN on Tel: 01788 530 080

Heat pump brings major savings for refurbished home A homeowner in Northern Ireland has reported a 60 per cent saving on his energy bills for a 30 Year old 2800 sq foot house with new extension, after having a Danfoss heat pump fitted to replace an oil fired boiler. Simon Bamford, who lives just outside Lisburn, approached Danfoss two years ago, as he was carrying out a major refurbishment of his dormer bungalow, including adding a one bedroom extension. This would mean the house had a lower carbon footprint and he hoped would make it more affordable to run. Mr. Bamford said: “ The comfort level with the Danfoss heat pump is so much better than with an oil fired system. We now have the heating on all the time for less than half the price!” For more details about heat pumps, visit – www.heatpumps.danfoss.co.uk

Gledhill Achieves Market First with Horizontal Stainless Launch
Essex Insulation now installing Insulating Concrete Formwork (ICF.)
An e-commerce business launched in February 2013 has smashed the £1m sales barrier after less than ten months trading in a market that is predicted to double in 2014. Eco Stores Direct, an eco-friendly online heating retailer that operates a number of specialist websites including ElectricRadiatorsDirect.co.uk, was launched by e-commerce entrepreneur Paul Walker last year. The firm’s core products of electric radiators have long been the favoured source of central heating in the European mainland and, as the UK reduces its levels of gas production, the same trend looks set to see rapid growth in the market over the next ten years. The business has quickly become one of the UK’s largest online retailers of energy efficient electric radiators and also retails replacement electric storage heaters. Eco Stores Direct trades principally via the www.ElectricRadiatorsDirect.co.uk
Gledhill, the cylinder specialist, has achieved another market first with the launch of the UK’s only domestic horizontal unvented cylinder. This has been independently approved by public health and safety organisation, NSF-WRc, Gledhill’s new range of horizontal products are available in sizes from 180 litres to 300 litre in both indirect and indirect solar configurations. Providing the ideal solution for locations where installation height is restricted, Gledhill’s horizontal stainless range is up to 50 per cent lighter than other unvented stainless steel cylinders, making the product perfectly suited to loft spaces. The horizontal stainless range are available through Gledhill Rapide service, with a next day delivery service available through the nationwide depot infrastructure.
For nearly 50 years, Essex Insulation has been a leading distributor and installer of thermal and acoustic insulation products, heating controls, boilers and renewable technologies. The company is now installing Insulating Concrete Formwork (ICF.) This is a recognised Modern Method of Construction; it is an insulated in-situ concrete system of building that is quick to construct and offers high performance levels. ICF is based on hollow lightweight block components that lock together without intermediate bedding materials, such as mortar, to provide a formwork system into which concrete is poured. This system gives the designer complete flexibility and allows the use of curves, arches, intricate patterns and a wide variety of finishes. IBI Nightingale’s Community Hospital Rises from Floods
O
n the afternoon of Thursday 19th November 2009, the rivers Derwent and Cocker burst their banks and flooded the Cumbrian town of Cockermouth, damaging homes, businesses and the local GP surgeries. Following the flood, the GP surgeries were decanted into temporary portakabins on the local cottage hospital site to ensure continuity of care within the neighbourhood. “As the extent of the damage was assessed, NHS Cumbria took the opportunity to review its health provision, deciding to create a new ‘joined-up’ service,” said Justin Harris, Architect and Studio Director at IBI Nightingale. “This strategy inspired the new build Cockermouth Community Hospital and Health Centre, to be delivered utilising the Express LIFT framework by NHS Cumbria’s development partner eLIFT Cumbria Limited and designed to provide a 21st century environment for patients, families and staff.” Responding directly to the local architectural vernacular, the new building is accessible and therapeutic. Situated close to the town centre, users benefit from views over the beautiful Cumbrian countryside, and historic Cockermouth Castle. “The families have had nothing but positive comments about the new hospital ward,” said Andrea Hendren, Ward Sister for Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust who run the inpatient ward at Cockermouth Community
Hospital and Health Centre. “The patients have settled in well and staff on the ward have said it’s a lovely environment, just like working in a private clinic.” Designed and delivered in collaboration with eLIFT Cumbria Limited and Head Tenant Community Health Partnerships, the new building houses GP and dental practices, together with imaging and in-patient facilities. The layout of the new building promotes collaborative working between the different departments, through the use of flexible, multi-functional, spaces. This reflects an aspiration to promote an integrated healthcare model. The building achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating. Gary Naylor, eLIFT Cumbria General Manager said: “After so many years working towards delivering this new development after the floods, we are delighted it is now open and to see the many benefits it is now bringing for the residents of Cockermouth and the staff who provide such excellent services from it. Everyone involved should be proud of their achievements in working together in partnership to deliver such a fantastic facility.” IBI Nightingale is a leading architectural practice specialising in the fields of health, education and science. The inTelligenT sysTem – A home AT your service Have you ever wondered how comfortable your living could be if you did not have to remember about and trouble yourself with trivial daily activities? What would your life be if the light was always right for you, if the heating kept a comfortable temperature when you were watching a film and automatically switch to economy when not needed? Freedom from a series of mundane tasks may not seem to be something special at first. Yet just like with many other things, a change for the better is profoundly felt and only when you have to return to previous solutions do you see what you really lose. People who know this best are those who already benefit from intelligent systems: after all, “comfort gets you addicted”.
Let us consider this example.
Lighting control is one of the most frequently adopted solutions among intelligent systems. Not only does this function allow you to turn off all the lights when you leave home, it also lets you customise the lighting configuration to your individual needs. Professional interior designers know perfectly what lighting types are best for specific activities: playing with children, reading, listening to music, a film show at home or an evening meeting with friends – each requires a special type of lighting. In order to ensure a varied interior lighting, each room is equipped with different luminaires that emit specific types of light. Creating a proper mood in the room requires turning on a specific configuration of lights; the more elaborate the light background is the more complex is the lighting configuration. An intelligent system radically simplifies the situation: a menu, a set of buttons or even a remote control (comfort is what we want, right?) lets you quickly switch the lights to the mode which suits us best at the moment.
An intelligent system knows what is the light you like when watching films – just press a button to adjust the lights in your room; your taste should always be considered
As seen in the example above, the intelligent system can provide for your comfort in a very wide perspective. Many people indeed value the benefits of intelligent solutions, yet
What precisely can the intelligent home systems, a system which cares for your needs, offer?
they still view them as a luxury available only for the few chosen ones. Naturally, some of the marketed solutions definitely exceed the financial limits of many; yet as turns out, equally functional alternatives can be available without any problems. An interesting offer can be an intelligent home system based on advanced alarm control units such as INTEGRA by SATEL. Apart from the complete sense of comfort given by a well-designed alarm system, the functionality of SATEL control units allows building systems which care for the comfort of your daily life: control over heating, A/C, lights and plant watering are just a few sample solutions possible with the product. Note that the wide offer of wireless devices does not require troublesome cable laying to create an advanced intelligent system installation. Moreover, the modular design of the system allows easy extension of its functionality in the future, when new needs or possibilities appear.

Zinga Film Galvanising System – Cold applied corrosion protection The €185 million thermal power station that has just been built in Runcorn near Liverpool is a ‘first’ for Europe. This is the first major project that has used a combination of hot-dip galvanising and Zinga film galvanising to give total corrosion protection to the steelwork. All of the standard upright RSJ’s are have been hot-dip galvanised, and all sixty-five of the horizontal box beams have been film galvanised using the one-component pure-zinc product Zinga. These beams are 20 metres in length and weight 20 tons each, and drilling them for de-gassing in a HDG bath was out of the question. The beams were film-galvanisied at ambient temperatures having been sprayed with Zinga. For further information visit - www.zinga-uk.com or contact - sales@zinga-uk.com

This stunning new build house in South Yorkshire has been designed to look glamorous, feel wonderful, be easy to control and work on a very practical level throughout. The design had to work functionally, safely with two young children, accessible fittings had to be cold to the touch and as efficiently as possible. Brilliant Lighting were responsible for the whole house lighting which is controlled by Lutron Homeworks which also controls the electric curtains and blinds and integrates with the home automation system from AMX.
THE OPEN PLAN DESIGN – of the kitchen, entrance hall and dining room means that the lighting has to be sympathetically treated across the space with specific lighting treatments for each zone. The unified lighting scheme is controlled with Lutron Homeworks for ease-of-use.

Housing Association Aims to Reduce Residents’ Energy Costs with Heat Pumps Thermal Earth has worked in conjunction with Wales & West Housing to successfully increase energy efficiency and reduce running costs for tenants in a large domestic housing refurbishment in Mid Wales. Residents at Llwynbrain Close in Howey, near Llandrindod Wells, have had their conventional heating systems replaced with Thermal Earth’s MasterTherm air source heat pumps in a bid to reduce the energy usage and carbon output of the estate. The new heat pump system can heat the home as well as provide hot water and significantly reduces the domestic carbon emissions and lowers fuel bills simultaneously. It is anticipated that residents may be able to save up to 70% on running costs when compared to the old electric night storage heater. Kingspan solar Thermal supplies hoT WaTer for snoWdonia Caravan parK Trawsdir, one of Wales’s top Touring and Caravan Parks, located in the beautiful Snowdonia National Park, has embraced renewable energy with the installation of solar technology. Solar thermal now supplies the hot water and feeds the underfloor heating in the shower block, lowering its gas usage and carbon footprint while boosting the Park’s income by around £2,000 per annum. rawsdir is a 5* family-run and maintained Touring & Caravan Park located in Snowdonia National Park in an area of outstanding natural beauty overlooking both Cardigan Bay and the impressive Lleyn Peninsula. During recent refurbishment work at the Park, local renewable energy installers Arizon Energy, were asked to review options for renewable energy technology, including solar thermal and solar PV. Initial analysis highlighted that the demand for hot water within the shower block was consuming a considerable proportion of the overall energy usage of the Park. Arizon approached Kingspan Solar, part
T
of Kingspan Environmental, to help design a system to provide a reliable source of year-round hot water for the block that could also cope with the heavy seasonal loading placed upon it during peak periods. Kingspan Solar’s specialist design and engineering team designed a dualpurpose solar thermal system that not only heated the domestic potable water for the showers and basins within the block; the excess energy it generated also supplied additional hot water to an underfloor heating system to help dry the shower floors and prevent damp and mould developing. In total, 10 Thermomax Heat Pipe solar thermal collectors were specified covering 28m2, to be placed West/East on each side of the shower block. The Thermomax collectors fed heated Glycol to two 500l Manco stainless steel cylinders and one x 500l Manco stainless steel buffer to the underfloor heating. During the winter months, while there is less solar energy and reduced demand for domestic hot water in the Park, the solar thermal system has been designed to continue to feed warmed water into the underfloor heating as a defence against frozen and burst pipes and to continue to resist the build-up of mould. A year on from the original installation and it is clear that the system is out-performing every expectation. Results collated by Arizon have showed enormous energy savings, far outstripping the initial T*SOL predictions.
The system has generated 14,994kWh of heat which equates to annual commercial RHI income in excess of £1,300. The annual saving in LPG gas usage for their hot water only of 13,000 litres, equates to more than £770 in cost savings; add to that the further savings from the solar heated underfloor heating system savings in LPG equate to £1882 pa. In total, therefore, the system is boosting the income generated by the Park by around £3,000 per annum. Chris Shenton who co-owns Trawsdir Touring Caravan & Camping with Rob Williams says: “The system that was installed two seasons ago has met and exceeded our and the installers’ expectations. The savings in gas alone speak for themselves; having the added benefit of the RHI makes the payback of the system even sooner. With the cost of fossil fuels rising annually we are hoping to be saving well into the future, making us a greener site and reducing our carbon footprint. We would recommend that all sites like ourselves, large or small, benefit from renewable energy.”

HUDDERSFIELD UNIVERSITY REAL VALUE AND BUILDABILITY RAISE ROOFING STANDARDS
s universities adjust their business models in response to changes in funding structures, university campuses have seen a significant investment to address the increasingly competitive nature of the higher education sector. Continuing pressures on finances in the sector mean that development projects must focus on durability that will deliver value and sustainability on a ‘whole life’ basis. However, a university campus must also sell itself as an attractive place to live and work so there is also a clear aesthetic imperative to enhance the built environment with schemes that are attractive as well as being energy efficient and practical.
A
At Huddersfield University, recent improvements to facilities include four new buildings, including a new sports hall, Dean’s office and corporate suite, designed by architects Watson Batty. The four buildings have been constructed with a single steel frame and all adjoin each other but rise to different heights varying from 2-4 storeys. To enhance the biodiversity and aesthetics of the development, green roofs were specified for three sections of the building, including the sports hall, and a warm roof was specified for the corporate suite. The variation in height of the interconnecting roofs means that some roof areas overlook the roofs of others, and the fact that the lower roofs are mostly shaded presented challenges in terms of both planting and drainage. Addressing those challenges became a team effort between the architects, the roofing contractor, Cawston Roofing, the green roof supplier ABG and the waterproofing specialist, Kemper System. Holistic Specification While the intention for the buildings had always been to install a combination of green roofs on three of the four roof areas and a traditional warm roof build-up on the fourth, the architect had originally specified a single ply membrane as the waterproofing system for the project. However, having used the Kemperol V210 cold liquid-applied waterproofing membrane from Kemper System for around 30 years, Cawston Roofing suggested to the architect that this would offer a more practical and durable alternative for a similar installed cost as the original specification. Meanwhile, ABG had developed an innovative ‘blue roof’ drainage system, which puts a high density polyethylene (HDP) reservoir under the growing medium to replace the more conventional SUDS system, reducing the installation time and avoiding costly and time-consuming excavation of separate drainage tanks. Explains Nick O’Mara from Cawston Roofing: “The Huddersfield University project demonstrates how important it is to consider specification decisions in a holistic sense rather than thinking about material costs in isolation. For the green roof system, avoiding the need for a SUDS system saved time, money and costs on site. For the waterproofing membrane, a change to Kemperol V210 meant that we could be more flexible with the programme and more creative with the roof build up as well as providing an FLL certified root-resistant and robust waterproofing membrane with a guaranteed service life.” Innovative Approach
The proposal from Cawston Roofing and ABG was to invert the roof by applying the Kemperol V210 waterproofing membrane first, followed by the insulation, the blue roof drainage reservoir and then the growing medium. “Applying the waterproofing membrane first provided a key advantage on site”, explains Nick. “It meant that the roof of the building was completely water-tight earlier in the installation process, saving valuable construction time; allowing fit out works on the lower levels of the building to take place sooner.” For the three green roofs, Cawston Roofing applied Kemper System’s Kempertec EP primer direct to the concrete slab substrate and, once this had cured, the Kemperol V210 cold liquid resin was applied. The Kemperol V210 resin saturates a non-woven reinforcement fleece and cures to provide a seamless, monolithic membrane that is tough and permanently flexible. Finally, Cawston Roofing installed 180mm insulation board onto the cured waterproofing system, followed by a slim line breather membrane, before passing the installation to ABG to complete the green roof element of the project. ABG installed a 40mm deep ‘Blue Roof’ drainage reservoir onto each of the three green roofs which provides collection and storage or rainwater to irrigate planting during dry periods, and offers a continuous drainage layer across the roof structure with attenuation capabilities which helps control the discharge of storm water. The growing medium and planting was then individually selected for each roof to take account of the roof area, location and level of shade created by surrounding buildings, with biodiversity measures built in to the specification. Explains Martin Lambley from ABG: “The sports hall roof has been designed as a wild flower meadow with planting of native species and areas of biodiversity, including log and rock insect nesting boxes and sandy and shingle areas. The other two roofs are at a lower level and are shaded by areas of the new building and adjacent existing buildings so here we used drought tolerant sedums and alpine planting.” Multiple Benefits The corporate suite section of the building has a metal deck roof and here the roof build up featured a vapour control layer installed directly onto the substrate followed by Kempertherm warm roof insulation. Cawston Roofing prepared the insulated substrate with Kemper System’s Kempertec D primer and, once this had cured, applied Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 waterproofing membrane with the same wet-on-wet process used for the green roofs. Nick adds: “Throughout the roofing process, switching to a cold liquid-applied waterproofing membrane enabled a much more flexible programme which speeded up the installation. Because the Kemperol waterproofing system bonds seamlessly to any substrate, including verticals, waterproofing of details on the roofs, such as pipe penetrations and drainage outlets was also made quicker and easier, as was the application of the waterproofing system on the upstands. This project really demonstrates how beneficial it can be to consider buildability benefits as well as functionality when specifying a roofing system.”

Historic Welsh Abbey Gains PV Solar Power Tintern Abbey is the best preserved medieval monastery in Wales, and even though the abbey itself is open to the skies, the gift shop urgently needed a new roof. Converting a solution to bring the building into the modern age, the roof was replaced with a Bauder roofing system along with their innovative and environmentally friendly photovoltaic (PV) offering, SOLfixx Plus. This unique system allows for web-based monitoring of the individual PV modules, effectively identifying any irregularities and increasing output by up to 25 percent. This is particularly beneficial for use on partially shaded roof areas, like the one at Tintern where nearby trees cast a shadow over the PV area but cannot be removed due to preservation regulations. The remarkable simplicity of the installation meant that the entire array could be installed in just one day to the client’s exact specifications. Tel: 01473 257671 Web: bauder.co.uk
RigiSystems introduces new range of composite panels RigiSystems has introduced a new range of composite panels, which complement the built-up systems. Composites can be useful on many smaller installations that may not justify the number of components required for a built-up system. Wall panels can, however, be used as part of a built-up system in order to provide the insulation layer. This can be particularly advantageous in façade applications, where a rigid insulation layer makes construction of the façade both easier and quicker. Panels, both roof and wall, are available in standard widths of one metre and lengths up to 16m, in a range of thicknesses to provide different ‘U’-values, and with either standard PIR core or fire rated mineral fibre wool core. Aico specified following review of smoke alarms in flats
FDS Consult fashions a high end solution for Alexander McQueen
Nottinghamshire’s A1 Housing has announced its decision to install Aico Ei160RC Series alarms into its flats, in light of a fire safety review. A1 Housing is an Arms Length Management Organisation (ALMO) providing the day-to-day management of Bassetlaw District Council's housing stock . Keith Slatter, Electrical Engineer of A1 Housing, explains his organisations decision to prioritise fire safety in their flats: “We have a mixture of alarms types within our flats, including a lot of battery-only powered alarms which were fitted by the local Fire & Rescue service. We made the decision to upgrade fire safety within our own flats and move to a policy of mains powered alarms only for maximum safety. Aico Ei160RC alarms were our first choice as they are the best in the market. We have been using Aico alarms since 2006.” Visit www.aico.co.uk or Email: enquiries@aico.co.uk
The creation of the new flagship Alexander McQueen clothing store in London’s Dover Street involved the dramatic transformation of an existing seven storey building. FDS Consult’s services were enlisted to provide an innovative and adequate fire safety solution for the property. The existing structure allowed only one means of escape for occupants, via a single staircase which opened on to the middle of the floor plate at ground level. Following an in-depth consultation with the client, our experts recommended creating a sterile zone from the lift and staircase directly outside of the building, giving occupants a protected route outside. In order to achieve the protection to the escape route, fire curtains were placed in this zone. In addition a commercial sprinkler system was installed throughout the store. en years ago the UK’s shelving and storage industry looked very different to today’s internet-based, customer-driven model. The standard delivery time on industrial shelving, for example, was normally at least 5 working days. So, when BiGDUG’s cofounders, Doug Nourse and Jon Powell, created the company in 2004 they did so with the sole intention of challenging what they saw as outdated, industrywide business practises. One of their first initiatives was the introduction of same-day despatch on in-stock products. “The internet revolution placed many more demands on retailers and one of them was definitely the need for speed” says Jon Powell “the other being increased product choice. We feel we have satisfied both aspects along with a second-to-none customer service offering.” Providing shelving and storage products to homes and businesses puts the company at the forefront of trends in consumer and business spending. “When we began 10 years ago it simply wasn’t affordable to put industrial strength shelving or racking in your home garage. We changed all that by offering a complete storage system for under £100. A comparable supplier would have been upwards of 3 or 4 times that cost. With the escalation of material goods in people’s lives and their desire for contemporary styling in their homes, we believe that future home builders will want to factor-in purpose-designed storage areas in their quest for a contemporary clutter-free environment. Or utilise their available garage space in the most effective way, and that’s where BiGDUG can help.” From small spaces to big spaces, planning storage for a warehouse can be a daunting task especially when a major consideration is maximising return per sq ft. Not to mention the all-important health and safety considerations. “We have an in-house design team who will discuss the practicalities of potential design ideas and offer as much guidance as necessary” says MD Doug Nourse. “And we’ll provide computer generated plans to allow you to get the most out of your available space and budget.” Mezzanine floors are becoming far more common now and are an extremely cost effective way of increasing floor space when business is ‘on the up’. They also cause minimal disruption to work time compared with the prospect of moving premises. From site appraisal to full installation when it comes to shelving and storage products, big or small, it seems BiGDUG really does deliver. After all 150,000 customers can’t be wrong.
