ROLEX PARTNERS WITH THE INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE EXHIBITION – LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA

R

olex is very proud to further its commitment to world-class architecture as the exclusive Partner and Official Timepiece of the 14TH International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. This major partnership linking the world’s leading luxury watch brand with the leading architectural forum will run over three editions (2014–2016–2018) of the exhibition.

In addition, this year Rolex has the pleasure of supporting Daniel Libeskind’s unique meditation on architecture, Sonnets of Babylon, for the Venice Pavilion. “The spirit that has guided Rolex from its earliest days – a dedication to precision, high performance and aesthetics – is the same spirit that is fundamental to all great architecture,” said Gian Riccardo Marini, Chief ROLEX PARTNERS WITH

THE INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE EXHIBITION – LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA Executive Officer of Rolex SA. “We share the same attention to detail and to quality. Like the components of a watch, each component of a building contributes to the ideal finished product.” Rolex’s involvement with leading architects stems from the 1960s when, true to its roots, it commissioned the Swiss architects Addor, Julliard & Bolliger

to design its Geneva headquarters at Acacias. In the mid 1990s, as part of a revolutionary change of strategy, Rolex remodelled the building. The company had decided to ensure the independence of the manufacture of the essential components of its watches by acquiring its Swiss suppliers. This vertical integration meant that the production of all the essential components for its watches would eventually be consolidated at four sites in Switzerland. In Geneva, this resulted in significant changes at Acacias, and the construction of two large production complexes at ChĂŞne-Bourg and Plan-les-Ouates, and ultimately the expansion of a manufacturing complex in Bienne, in the canton of Bern.

In 1997, the Swiss firm Brodbeck-Roulet was commissioned to design the new buildings in Geneva, creating workspaces conducive to high productivity and exceptional working conditions. Outside Switzerland, the Rolex-supported Lititz Watch Technicum Training and Service Center in Pennsylvania, in the U.S., was the work of American architect Michael Graves (1999–2001); and both the Rolex Toyocho (2002) and Nakatsu (2009) buildings, respectively in Tokyo and Osaka, were designed by Fumihiko Maki. All of these buildings reflect the essence of a high-precision industry.

Rolex enjoys an unrivalled reputation for quality and expertise the world over.

Most notable of the company’s close ties with architecture and great architects is the Rolex Learning Center designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ry e Nishizawa of SANAA. The cultural hub and library of the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), it has become a landmark design in global architecture. The result of a long-established partnership between Rolex and the institute, the building opened to international acclaim in 2010. This support of architecture is further embodied in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, the biennial philanthropic programme begun in 2002

that – in keeping with Rolex’s philosophy of championing individual achievement as a basic tenet of the brand – fosters young artists in seven artistic areas, including architecture. By pairing these emerging talents with a great artistic master for a year, they are given the time to learn, create and grow at a crucial point in their careers. Álvaro Siza served as the first mentor for visual arts in the inaugural cycle; and, in 2012, the category of architecture was officially added to the programme, with Kazuyo Sejima serving as mentor. Swiss architect Peter Zumthor is the current mentor. His protégée is Paraguayan

architect Gloria Cabral. Frank Gehry, Sir David Chipperfield, Daniel Libeskind and Ry e Nishizawa have helped steer the Initiative as members of the Advisory Board, which is newly formed for each mentoring cycle. “Our partnership with the Venice Architecture Biennale reflects Rolex’s natural affinity for excellence and achievement as represented by the best contemporary architecture,” said Gian Riccardo Marini. “We look forward to cultivating our relationship with this iconic exhibition over the next few years.” www.rolex.com

The Historic Towns Forum

Recreational recycling boosts local economy

A Gem of an Installation

The Historic Towns Forum has over 27 years’ experience in promoting the prosperity and heritage of historic towns and cities. Its work is rooted in the recognised value of heritage assets to social, economic and environmental well-being. We are the only UK-based organisation that represents all professional disciplines and sectors working within the historic built environment. Attending an HTF event counts for CPD and also gives you the opportunity to network with HTF partners and members at all levels. Coming events include: How can heritage tourism help our town centres? – 15 October, Poulton-le-Fylde Growth and the Green Belt Issue – historic towns and managing expansion – 25 November, Chester Visit – www.historictownsforum.org or Email – Noel.James@kellogg.ox.ac.uk

Recycling on the go is on the rise across the UK with many local authorities setting up recycling centres in public areas in a bid to reduce volumes of waste to landfill. Plastics manufacturer Leafield Environmental is working round the clock to keep ahead of orders for their top-selling, high volume outdoor recycling unit the Envirobank 240L. Leafield MD Phil Maddox said: “Britain still has a long way to go to increase its recycling rates to meet the target to recycle 50% of waste by 2020 under the European Union’s Waste Framework Directive.” “Many councils are realising that the age-old problem of litter can be turned into a valuable resource for the local economy. Plastic bottles, cans and newspapers, which usually end up in landfill, can hold a high value when collected separately for recycling.”

Warrior doors were commissioned to design, manufacture and install a new high security doorset by Tulja jewellers to replace their existing entrance. The client specifically wanted an interlocking system featuring 2 sliding doors which would be both convenient to use and provide a higher level of security and protection for the premises and staff. Warrior doors chose FAAC’s A140 sliding door operator due to its high performance capability. “The complexity of the electronic design with two interlocking doors, maglocks to work in conjunction with motorized locks and electronic emergency key override made this a completely new concept.” stated Brett Barratt of Warrior Doors. This new sliding door entrance works extremely well. I think this is one of the most secure automatic retail entrances in the UK”. –Mr Lodhia, Proprietor

SCHÖCK VERIFIABLE PERFORMANCE FITS NICELY WITH BOUYGUES Two large affordable housing developments in Brent incorporate Schöck Isokorb thermal break modules to prevent thermal bridging and help optimise the sustainable nature of the buildings. The design and build developments are part of a scheme being delivered for the Brent Private Finance Initiative (PFI) housing project by Bouygues UK, in partnership with Hyde Housing. The Isokorb used on both sites, the type KS14, is a load-bearing, thermal insulating element for connecting cantilevered steel components to reinforced concrete. The Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development, at Oxford Brookes University has carried out an independent investigation into the performance criteria concerning the effectiveness of steel balcony connections to concrete slabs. The OISD found the Isokorb type KS14 to be a superior thermal insulating element for connecting cantilevered steel components to reinforced concrete. Other comparable solutions failed to obtain the minimum performance required by Part L of the Building regulations(1).

The comprehensive Schöck Isokorb range of modules provides BBA Certification, LABC Registration and meets full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations. The temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (fRSI) that must be greater than, or equal to, 0.75 for residential buildings, is easily met by incorporating the Isokorb.contact

Loic Menard, Project Director for Bouygues UK, Brent Social Housing & Regeneration PFI commented: "Schöck Isokorbs provide energy efficient thermal breaks that comply with our design and build sustainability requirements. The product's functionality meets our objectives in achieving high performance buildings whilst reducing CO2 emissions during production and for the end user".

GEZE Pod is the Perfect Solution for Places For People A gloomy unappealing entrance at The Pavilions in Preston has been transformed with the installation of a light, spacious and draught proof curved lobby from GEZE UK, the UK’s leading manufacturer of door and window control systems. GEZE’s Slimdrive SC curved sliding automatic doors were specified by architects Summers-Inman to create a stunning focal point and welcoming entrance in the extended reception at the Places For People Group’s HQ. Places For People also wanted to control access to the building so the outer doors allow visitors into the lobby, while the inner doors are activated by the company’s reception staff. Kaz Spiewakowski, managing director of GEZE UK, explained that Summers Inman chose an elliptical entrance because it provided the perfect solution for access control. East Yorkshire building products manufacturer teams up with a local college to hold a training event. Timloc invited students from Hull College, who are undertaking their NVQ Level 3 in Brickwork, to its site in Goole. Here, the company's Technical Director, Phil Harvey, demonstrated best practice on the installation of cavity trays. The idea behind the event was to raise awareness of Timloc's products and the benefits of using cavity trays correctly in a build, as well as educating the builders of the future. Phil said: "With our winters seeing increased rainfall, sales of cavity trays are on the rise, as they are more reliable and effective than traditional damp-proof course (DPC) methods. However, a lot of bricklayers and people in the construction trade simply don't know how to install them properly." For more information call 01405 765567 or visit – www.timloc.co.uk.

Dalby Holiday Lodges called on pipe specialists Flexenergy to take charge of the distribution system for domestic hot water and central heating at their holiday cottage complex in East Yorkshire, using their eco-friendly Flexalen 600 material. The all year round complex comprises a main house and four lodges equipped with central heating, double glazing and all furnished to a high standard. HOMEOWNERS FOCUS ON CURB APPEAL OF HOMES AS HOUSE PRICES BEGIN TO RISE

A lot of buyers can be put off quite quickly if the outside of the house looks tired, dated or unattractive. One easy aesthetic improvement could involve renovating the front door with new hardware or furniture, as it is often the focal point for the property.

W

ith the property market starting to move again and average house prices increasing, IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery products to the trade, has found that people looking to sell their properties are becoming increasingly focused on improving the curb appeal of their homes. According to Nationwide’s latest monthly house price index, based on mortgages approved by the society, annual house prices have risen by 8.8% and are at the highest level since May 2010. This has increased the average house price to just under £176,500. Government schemes such as Funding for Lending and Help to Buy have also encouraged first time buyers to return to the housing

market, as well as other factors such as improved employment opportunities, low mortgage rates and a strengthening economy. As a result, homeowners looking to sell their properties are increasingly investing in the properties’ exterior appearance in order to attract potential buyers. Whether it is dressing up the front door, giving gates a new leash of life or replacing old windows. Wayne Lysaght-Mason, managing director of IronmongeryDirect, said: “As the housing market begins to strengthen and property prices increase, it is a good time for those looking to sell. However with many people having the same idea, homeowners are realising that they need to improve the curb appeal of their homes in order to make their property stand out from the

crowd and draw in potential buyers. “A lot of buyers can be put off quite quickly if the outside of the house looks tired, dated or unattractive. One easy aesthetic improvement could involve renovating the front door with new hardware or furniture, as it is often the focal point for the property. “Adding new house numbers, entry door locksets, mailboxes, or new lighting, for example, is an affordable way to add style and interest to the home’s exterior appearance. We’ve certainly witnessed an increase in sales of these types of products as more people recognise the benefits this investment can bring.” For more information, please visit http://www. ironmongerydirect.co.uk

We develop and distribute our own software for the building and construction industry.

We’ve tried to keep the program simple and user friendly which has proved very successful.

uickScale is for taking areas and measurements off pdf drawings. The user plots an accurate measurement to scale the drawing. If there are no measurements on the drawing, any known measurement like a door width or parking space can be used.

of QuickScale. The Plus version will have additional features and functions and a Lite version will purely and simply take measurements. These 2 new versions, plus improvements and updates to the current standard version should be ready for customers to try within the next few weeks.

To measure an area, click on the Area button on the toolbar then click around the points and corners of the area. Similarly to measure a distance, click on the Line or Path button and click on the points and corners of the measurement.

We offer a free 30 day trial and provide unlimited help and support wherever needed – both during the trial or after a customer buys a licence.

Dimensions are exported to a spreadsheet where they can be edited. The drawing can be printed to scale on any size printer from A4 to A1 plotters. We’ve tried to keep the program simple and user friendly which has proved very successful. Our initial target customer four years ago was the small business or home office subcontractor but because of QuickScale’s simplicity, it is now used by everyone from large multi million pound construction companies to the self employed one-man-band. QuickScale isn’t only limited to the building and construction industry, anyone in insurance, marine construction, sales and energy who takes areas and measurements off pdf drawings can use it to get their dimensions without having to print the drawing. Most drawings are emailed in pdf form and the recipient does not always have access to CAD or CAD knowledge. Sending drawings to printers to be printed to scale is time consuming and costly. With QuickScale, they can plot one known measurement by clicking on either end of it and entering the distance. Within minutes they can have taken all their measurements without having to travel to site or find space to store the printed paper drawings.

We found that during the recession when a lot of companies stopped trading, their staff were unable to find the same line of work and a surprising number set up their own business and worked for themselves. They bought QuickScale for themselves because they found it so easy to use. Now the economy is picking up again and construction companies are taking on more staff, they are coming back to us for additional licences and referring us to colleagues which is fantastic. The majority of our sales are repeat customers or referrals.

We’ve taken customer feedback and comments into consideration and are currently working on 2 new versions

If you ask our customers for one word on how best to describe QuickScale, they would say “simple”.

Brooklyn meets Belgravia

At the Belgraves London hotel with bathrooms from Hansgrohe

N

estled among upmarket Belgravia residential blocks and embassy buildings, behind a bland 1970s façade, is the surprising and luxurious boutique hotel ‘Belgraves London’. The first hotel outside of the US for the Thompson Hotel Group, Belgraves offers the intimate appeal of a private club combined with chic city design that brings a touch of Brooklyn to Belgravia. With interior design by Tara Bernerd & Partners, Belgraves has a New York loft feel inside with exposed brick walls, casual-cool doormen and an alluring

glass-fronted fire. The hotel facilities combine New York attitude with British hospitality. These include a bar with cigar terrace - framed with green walls of flowers, a lobby lounge complete with plush seating and library, private dining or meeting space for up to 22 guests and a state-of-the-art gym. Eclectic dining, fusing Mediterranean, Californian and Australian influences, is provided by Sophie Mitchell – Britain’s youngest female executive chef, in the Pont St. hotel restaurant. The 85 rooms, including 14 suites, are spacious and glamorous with wide-plank

hardwood floors and sleek contemporary lines warmed by rich textures from grey wool, purple velvet and eclectic artworks. The bathrooms are clad with Arabescato marble and feature dark wood vanity units with smoked glass tops and brass beaded curtains along the glazed wall that divides bathroom and bedroom. The brassware and showers that ensure guests enjoy a pampering and refreshing experience in the bathroom are from German specialist Hansgrohe. Axor Citterio was the collection of choice for the opulent bathroom of the 70m2 Penthouse. Created by internationally

renowned architect and designer, Antonio Citterio, Axor Citterio is characterised by a strong geometric design with gleaming, perfectly crafted surfaces. First launched in 2003, its harmonious combination of straight angular edges next to rounded curves have suceeded in elevating this collection to a global design classic for the bathroom that works equally well in traditional and contemporary settings. The 3-hole basin mixer with cross-handles make an elegant statement on the Penthouse wash basin and the handles are easy to grip and turn. The same crosshandle design is echoed in the luxurious

shower area and is joined by another celebrated Axor designer, Philippe Starck. Uncompromising minimalism and modularity are the two principles behind the Axor ShowerCollection with Philippe Starck. Square shower modules, 12 x 12cm in size, can be positioned singly or in groups in order to provide luxurious showering wherever needed. In the case of the Belgraves London Penthouse bathroom, four modules provide stylish and invigorating body showers. Fitted flush in the ceiling above, the matching 24 x 24cm overhead shower interprets the same basic principle of the square to

deliver a refreshing downpour. The accompanying hand shower in the Penthouse and other hotel bathrooms is the popular Raindance S100 Air. Using pioneering Hansgrohe technology which infuses water with air, the resulting Air Power delivers a voluminous spray that envelopes the body and feels like natural rain. Available in various sizes and models with multiple spray options, there are also overhead versions of Raindance used througout the hotel for a luxurious shower experience.

Metris S from Hansgrohe is found in the bathrooms of the 44m2 Studio Suite and 51m2 Thompson Suite. Created by the studio of Phoenix Design, the single-lever basin mixer is minimalist in its design with clean and exact lines. The horizontal control lever (pin handle) represents a back-to-the-basics ergonomic design that maximises user comfort. Complementary pieces from the same range are specified throughout the hotel, including the 4-hole

rim-mounted bath and shower mixer on the Studio Suite bath tub. With the quality of the bathroom ranking highly as a priority for hotel guests, Belgraves London made the decision to install fittings that ensure reliable performance and timeless design. Expert interior design including sympathetic lighting schemes ensure the

bathrooms all feel inviting and special. In the Studio Suite, the marble-clad bath is surrounded on three sides by windows affording stunning views across the Belgravia rooftops – surely the epitomy of city hotel bathroom luxury. Bathrooms & Kitchens Bringing sense to lighting

Feature Bathroom lighting is becoming more desirable, but until now the choices of switching have been severely limited. (Pull-cords, PIRs or outside switching). Sensorbility, has therefore developed the NEW Bathroom Switch controller, with Dimmer and Timer variants; thus allowing bathroom designers far more flexibility when it comes to lighting design and operation within bathrooms. The variations of the new controller include simple on/off switching, ramp-up dimming, ramp-down switch-off and time delay switch-off. Wired to our proven Bathroom Switch Sensor Pads, which can be placed behind most materials such as Ceramic Tiles, Wood, Plastic, Glass, and even Metals, users can create switches or dimmers in virtually any shape and situation. Tiles covering Sensor Pads are adhered with silicone allowing access should it be necessary. In Bathrooms, these Sensor Pads can even be placed behind tiles reachable from the bath or shower (zones 1&2) and thus allow safe switching and dimming. The new Bathroom Switch controllers can be activated from up to 12 low voltage (5vdc) Sensor Pads, so for example a Dimmer Controller can be operated from a Sensor Pad by the door and then the lights dimmed by touching a tile whilst in the bath. Most types of lighting can be operated by the Bathroom Switch; this includes incandescent bulbs, halogens (mains and low voltage), LEDs and low energy bulbs.

Waltham Forest College Architects: Platform 5 Architects, Richard Hopkinson Architects Website: platform5architects.com Project: The Heart of the College Location: London, UK Area: approx. 3000 m2 Photography: Alan Williams Photography

PHASE 1 This project marks the first phase in the delivery of a strategic masterplan.

Phase 1 The £3 million project opens up the existing landmark 1930s building to create a new series of formal and informal education and meeting areas, which work as set of interacting horizontal and vertical layered spaces. The intervention of a suspended glazed seminar box within the central learning space, accessed by a slender oak-lined staircase, is the project’s most striking feature. Our team have transformed the previously austere and run-down main spaces in the college to create a welcoming, inclusive and contemporary environment for students, staff and other building users. This project marks the first phase in the delivery of a strategic masterplan. The success of the project has led to a further commission to carry out the second stage of the masterplan with a £4.9M project.

Phase 2 This £4.9 million development, which marks the second phase of our work for Waltham Forest College in collaboration with Richard Hopkinson Architects, continues to upgrade routes and maximise the use of previously underused or redundant spaces. Above the entrance lobby a new student zone offers a place for relaxation and extracurricular activities alongside a mezzanine floor dedicated to the Students Union. On the ground floor, the large unused area beneath the main entrance steps has been refurbished to create a 70-seater lecture theatre and an innovative Market Place incorporating a butchery, a bakery, a reprographics and stationary centre and a start-up business incubator. The 1970s Lowery Centre has been re-clad and the fashion department’s workshops renovated to produce bright modern workspaces. The scheme also includes a Young Persons Learning Centre incorporating a workshop, a life skills classroom, a light craft room and flexible teaching space. The Centre will have direct access to a landscaped courtyard.

ROCKFON make a healthy contribution to BREEAM ‘excellent’ Southmead Hospital hase one of an impressive new Bristol hospital has now opened on-time and is fully operational. It replaces Victorian buildings which started life as workhouses. The £430 million Southmead Hospital not only offers the very best healthcare facilities but is one of the most environmentally-friendly buildings of its size in the UK. The design of the building is very bright with lots of big windows and has a large glass atrium as its centrepiece. ROCKFON ceilings were specified by contractor, Carillion, because they fulfilled the design c “The North Bristol NHS Trust wanted to move away from the standard square grid ceiling design commonly found in hospitals. ROCKFON ceilings gave us the acoustic performance we needed; are recyclable and sustainable, and met our economies of scale.”

P

The hospital is fitted with Rockfon MediCare Standard and MediCare Plus ceilings throughout. The MediCare range fulfils all the essential cleaning and hygienic demands of healthcare environments and complies with the Department of Health’s HBN and HTM guidelines. MediCare ceilings do not contribute to the growth of MRSA. They have a low particle emission and have achieved the Clean Room Classification ISO Class 4 for MediCare Plus and ISO Class 5 for MediCare Standard. Rockfon Medicare Standard and Medicare Plus offer design freedom thanks to their exposed and concealed edges and availability in a variety of module sizes. Rockfon MediCare Standard is a 15mm thick stone wool tile which is ideal for areas such as wards, offices and consultation rooms. Its visible surface is covered with a white painted fleece which has a light reflection of 86% adding to the light, airy feel the architect wanted for the hospital. The Gateway

The new Gateway device is easy to install and quick to configure allowing you to control your Hörmann automatic garage doors and gates with your mobile device.

Security with style T

he new BiSecur Gateway and smartphone app from Hörmann, is yet another example of how the German manufacturer is continuing to meet consumer needs without compromising style. With automatic gates and garage doors now being included into many designs, to offer convenience and security, the new system takes this to a new level. Hörmann’s BiSecur radio system not only uses the same encryption that online banks rely on but also interrogates the handset to ensure that the instructions the operator receives are from an authorised source. The new Gateway device is easy to install and quick to configure allowing you to control your Hörmann automatic garage doors and gates with your mobile device. The Gateway and associated app turns your mobile into both a controller and system administrator that you can use over your home network, or worldwide through the internet. With Hörmann, security is part of the design philosophy. Hörmann automatic sectional garage doors, for instance, are the first to achieve Police approved Secured by Design accreditation. As well as the BiSecur radio system, the operators for these doors also feature a mechanical lock. This unique automatic latching

system makes it almost impossible to lever these doors open, and as it is a purely mechanical system it remains fully functional even in the event of a power failure. Secured by Design status is also applied to several options in the Hörmann ThermoPro range of entrance doors which feature multipoint locking with a combination of conical swing and security lock bolts that pull the door tightly shut. Three further security bolts on the hinge side make it practically impossible to force these doors open. One of the key elements of the Secured by Design option is a new, even more secure, individually coded lock cylinder that has been designed to resist picking, snapping, bumping or drilling. All these high security features can be included without compromising style. The Hörmann range goes a step further by offering a wide range of styles and types of garage and entrance doors that can meet the aesthetic demands of the most critical eye, yet retain the higher levels of security that home-owners and their insurers are demanding. Whatever your design challenge Hörmann is able to provide options that can meet a range of demands including improved insulation, better security

without limiting your design and styling choices. For more information about the full range of entrance and garage doors contact Hörmann direct by telephone on 01530 516888, e-mail at info@ hormann.co.uk or go online at www.hormann.co.uk

estled along a leafy lane on the outskirts of Winchester sits Kilham House. Once a tired building with a confusing layout, the house now boasts a contemporary update that really transforms the house into the five-bedroomed family home that it desperately needed to be. A grand, double-height entrance guides you into the building, immediately bringing you into the heart of the home which has now been become the main living space for the family. The stairs take you up to the first floor and onto a bridge that flows across the double height entrance space. ArmaFORM PET GR a truly sustainable concept! limate protection and sustainability are shaping the political agenda worldwide. Embracing responsibility for future generations means taking energy and resource savings into account in today’s decisions. Buildings are a good example: today, they are responsible for more than 40% of global energy consumption and account for one-third of the greenhouse gas emissions into our planet’s atmosphere.

C

‘Caring for Climate’ is a principle we have fully endorsed in our ArmaFORM PET production, as well: the product is fully recyclable, we re-use 100% of our material loss in internal recycling, and we do not use any ozone-depleting HFH or CFC blowing agents. Especially the new generation of PET foam core, ArmaFORM PET GR, is aimed to be used in building and construction as a

‘real’ sustainable material: made 100% from post-consumer PET materials. Making the post-consumer r-PET requires 70% less energy and produces 80% less CO2 per unit than the virgin PET resin1). Compared to the standard PET foams using virgin PET resin, the foaming process of ArmaFORM PET GR leads to an excellent result of a 30% lower carbon footprint, the greenhouse effect can be reduced by 34% and energy consumption by 40% 2). The improvement is again enlarged when comparing it to other core foams like PVC, SAN, PUR or XPS, a comparison with various foam cores is shown on the graphs (Figures 1+2).3) In recent years a wide variety of national and international green building directives have been introduced worldwide, such as BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) or LEED (Leadershipment in Energy and

Environmental Design). LEED certification considers the entire life-cycle of a building by focusing on the following crucial criteria: site locations, water use, energy performance, materials and resources, indoor quality, and innovation & design. ArmaFORM PET GR foam may positively support, but is not limited to, the following criteria: improved insulation efficiency, use of resources and recycled material, innovation & design and LCA data. ArmaFORM PET GR - as one component out of a multitude within a building project - can potentially contribute 31 points to the LEED rating system 4). To get LEED certification for any commercial buildings and neighbourhoods, a project must first satisfy all LEED prerequisites and additionally earn a minimum of 40 points on a 110-point LEED rating scale system. www.armacell-core-foams.com

Jakwall bench and raised beds

Louise Tomlin updates us on the 5th Annual Jacksons Show Gardens competition… A feast for the eyes…

Tropical garden in July

I

have just finished the fairly hefty task of editing and uploading some 200 photos I have recently taken of the show gardens here at Jacksons. This was in an effort to make sure I keep the web site updated to show how the gardens are maturing. In past years I have focused on showing the completed projects at the time they have been completed, and there’s no doubt they look great then and draw many compliments from visitors.

However, after returning from a couple of weeks away to take a hard earned break, I trotted out to have a look at how things were going with the gardens and I was amazed at what I saw. No doubt the fantastic weather we’ve had throughout July and a bit of August, has helped encourage growth, glorious hot sun interspersed with plentiful rain, could be considered perfect conditions I guess. Plus the fact that I’ve had some help from a very good gardening lady, Jane, who helps keep

You can see in the pics here it was used to create raised beds for planting, housing for a water feature and ingeniously a bench seat. It looks fantastic, I’m sure you will agree, many visitors were impressed, as was the landscaper who built the garden. Ian Day said it was so much better than using sleepers, it was lighter and had very nice chamfered edges. Well that’s a definite thumbs-up for the Jakwall.

Well this was definitely the spur I needed to get my camera out and it was a very pleasant few hours I spent feasting on the flowers, the colours, the light and relationships between all the elements, like paving, stones, water features, sculpture and gorgeous Jacksons timber, of course!

External Works & Landscaping Berry Systems Cladding For New Southwater Car Park

A key feature of the Southwater Regeneration project in Telford is the construction of a 600 space multi-storey car park with potential for expansion by a further 350 spaces in future years. Associated Architects of Birmingham discussed the cladding requirements with car park specialists Berry Systems at an early stage in the project’s development. This enabled Berry Systems to demonstrate their ‘in depth’ expertise by designing a cladding system that met the pedestrian loading requirements of BS 6180 and so removed the need for additional pedestrian handrailing on interior faces. The expanded metal mesh cladding was then produced and installed by Berry Systems’ own team for contractor Morgan Sindall. They also installed vehicle safety barriers at the split levels inside the car park from their extensive range of floor and column mounted barrier systems. Installation was completed in April 2014 in good time for the planned August launch event for phase 1 of this £250 million project. Berry Systems design, manufacture and install car park cladding systems, vehicle safety barriers and complete modular car parks from their base in Bilston, near Wolverhampton. They are part of the Hill and Smith Infrastructure products Group. For more information call 01902 491100, visit ww w.berr ysystems.co.uk or email sales@berr ysystems.co.ukcontact

Sound Environmental Ideas From German Barrier Systems Ltd.

Owing to the ever diminishing availability, in Urban areas, of suitable land for development Local Government planning authorities are increasingly finding it necessary to consider land that was previously thought unsuitable due to its close proximity to nearby roads and railway lines and the inherent noise problem that ensue.

44

To help realize the potential of this previously unsuitable land Gramm Barrier Systems Ltd., has developed a unique range of absorbing and reflective sound barriers especially suited, with their aesthetic appearance, to Urban areas when erected alongside the road/railway boundary, significantly reducing noise levels to conform with statutory requirements. W

hen Gramm Barrier Systems Ltd was commissioned by Dew Construction (on behalf of RMC Surfacing) to supply 900m of CCA-pregnated reflective timber barrier for the A64 at Copmanthorpe near York, it had no idea it was taking part in a ground-breaking experiment. As it turned out the East Sussex-based company was given an unusual request – to paint ‘waves’ on to its barriers at 57m intervals.

Existing

“It sounds like an odd thing to do but there was some method in the madness,” reveals Steve Whittle, director, Gramm Barrier Systems. “The thinking was that the waves, as well as ‘breaking up’ the continuous timber, would basically ‘calm’ the traffic because it brings about the effect of making drivers slow down – an ingenious and relatively cheap idea especially when compared to other traffic-calming methods.” With its brief at hand the company commissioned G&P Property Maintenance Services of Hertfordshire to create attractive waves in Sadolin paint. That was last month – and as our picture shows the finished result is definitely an eye-catching addition to the local infrastructure. “Mission accomplished,” offers Steve. A well-respected name in its chosen industry, Gramm Barrier Systems Ltd is a leading supplier and installer of acoustic barriers and high security fencing systems, including sliding barrier gates and turnstiles. Offering a full design service for its complete range of reflective and absorptive barriers, the company specialises in supplying products that are aesthetically pleasing whilst delivering excellent noise abatement properties and maintenance free durability.

During

For starters the company supplies timber acoustic barriers, available as reflective or absorbing in a range of heights from 1m to 6m. Then there’s aluminium and steel absorbing barriers, where the sound-deadening properties of high density mineral wool are encased in either a high specification pre-galvanised and painted steel or aluminium panels. Next comes transparent acoustic barriers, ranging from cast acrylic and extruded acrylic to extruded polycarbonate products. Last but not least in the product and service portfolio are concrete acoustic barriers, available as reflective or absorptive absorbing barriers and constructed from a unique wood fibre concrete material designed to be highly absorptive to railway and road generated noise. “A nationwide design, supply and installation service is available,” Steve adds appending that the company typically works for a wide range of county councils, major contracting groups and industrial-based customers – such is its reputation for meeting the needs of its clients however unusual they may be. www.grammbarriers.com

Provide Missing Link The new 151m long cable stay bridge in Ebbw Vale installed in March by CTS Bridges provides local people with safe access across the valley and connects the town with new leisure facilities and schools built on the site of a former steelworks. The area has been regenerated over the last 3-4 years with new leisure facilities and schools being built. However, the local residents previously had to make a bus journey to get to the other side of the valley. The new bridge enables people to access the schools and leisure facilities on a direct route. The 151m long total length of the bridge comprises four spans of 47m, 50m, 30m and 24m. These spans are supported with a 34m high cable tower and cables. The cables connecting the bridge to the cable tower were tensioned using a Macalloy Techno Tensioner. The installation of the bridge took place in March with some poor weather to contend with. But luckily the sun was out on the day the main cable tower was erected. Various sized cranes were used in the installation of the bridge including 500 tonne, 250 tonne, 150 tonne cranes and a 40m mechanical work platform. CTS’s installation teams were on site for 2 weeks erecting the bridge spans. CTS worked closely with main contractor Dawnus to deliver the bridge on a tight timescale in time for the opening in April 2014.

Two neighbouring historic Leamington Spa buildings converted to residential use by TateHindle

wo neighbouring, historic buildings in the heart of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire have been brought back to life by TAG Exclusive Properties supported by London architectural practice TateHindle.

Both buildings are Grade II listed and date back to the late 19th/ early 20th centuries. Originally built as Leamington Spa’s ‘Free Library and Technical and Art School’, the original multi-purpose roles included a secondary day school and an annex housing an art gallery and museum.

Royal Leamington Spa has a strong architectural heritage dating from when the town was a popular Victorian spa town. The Old Library has been converted into 29 high-end residential flats and the adjacent former Art Gallery will be redeveloped as a luxury single family

Andrew Tate, director of TateHindle, said: “Royal Leamington Spa has a strong architectural heritage dating from when the town was a popular Victorian spa town. Converting The Old Library and The Gallery in keeping with the local history and context, while incorporating the latest technology and features, have created places of inspiring contemporary living in line with TAG Exclusive Properties’ trackrecord of breathing new life into classic properties.”

TateHindle’s design has blended original Victorian features and character with crisp, modern interior design, incorporating multi-level living spaces and ample room for the latest technology, modern appliances and energy efficiency.

TateHindle’s design has blended original Victorian features and character with crisp, modern interior design, incorporating multi-level living spaces and ample room for the latest technology, modern appliances and energy efficiency. An expansive, open-air communal courtyard within The Old Library has been created in place of the original library’s large glass enclosed atrium, allowing considerable daylight into the apartments, as well as a tranquil area for residents to relax on sunny days. The large existing floor to floor heights have been cleverly adapted by the creation of an additional level of accommodation to the courtyard side while retaining the larger double height volume to the external facades which houses living and dining spaces. Externally, the striking red brick façade has been restored and retained including statement facets along the roofline, including eye-catching portico features, coats of arms and a bell tower. Planted areas besides the roadside pavement add to the kerbside appeal of an old style building given a brand new lease of life. any hotel groups have used Glasstex in public areas and bedrooms. It’s not just national hotel groups who have used Glasstex, many independent hoteliers have used the product. Kings of Weymouth Mrs L King Managing Director of the group said: We have used Glasstex for many years in our hotels, bars and restaurants. The product is excellent, it is exceptionally hard wearing so ideal for busy public areas but also suitable for the bedrooms. Glasstex is ecologically sound, and truly comes into its own in Healthcare, Nursing Home and hospital environments. The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is the largest cancer treatment centre in Europe, this means there is a very large volume of people entering The Christie on a daily basis.

Bob Higginbotham, Head of Facilities Management at The Christie said: The main corridors are in the older part of the hospital and as such have seen much repair and patching up over the years and at best were looking tired. The brief to our architects was to come with a solution that would be durable, decorative, cost effective and minimise disruption both now and on a maintenance basis. They came up with the Glasstex system, and this has turned out to more than fit the criteria. The ease of application meant that the corridors could be decorated quickly on a night shift without causing disruption to the day to day running of the hospital. The finished system has completely upgraded the corridors and given a modern and pleasant look to what are probably the busiest areas in the hospital, and facilitating

ease of maintenance. Glasstex, Designed to offer a lifetime of pattern, colour and paint finish options.

LATHAMS’ LATEST CLADDING GETS TRADA APPROVAL

A

ccoya®LathamCLAD - the modified, highly durable and dimensionally stable certified timber cladding – is now available from all eight of James Latham’s timber depots.

Created from sustainably sourced wood and completely non-toxic, Accoya®LathamCLAD is a revolution in wood technology. And with the 15mm profile having recently received TRADA approval for use as an external cladding product, Accoya®LathamCLAD is a perfect solution for exterior cladding, siding and façades where the wider board offers numerous features and benefits including enhanced aesthetics, less frequent maintenance, dimensional stability, durability and improved insulation values. Suitable for horizontal or vertical installation, Accoya®LathamCLAD can be used to create simple or complex designs. And with a choice of factory coating finishes, it can be opaque

coated or, for those wishing to enjoy the natural look of wood, translucent coated. Plus, with a 50-year guarantee when used externally, Accoya®LathamCLAD’s low maintenance requirements add to its ‘whole life’ cost effectiveness and environmental credentials and this versatility makes it ideal for use in residential, commercial and industrial applications. Paul Leach, James Latham’s Group Product Sales & Development Manager for Accoya said, “When it comes to cladding, Accoya®LathamCLAD ticks all the boxes and is the perfect solution for many exterior applications which were once only feasible with non-sustainable material. Use of the wider cladding boards is allowed by the improved dimensional stability, plus cladding joints do not open, tolerances remain tight and twist is prevented. In addition, the wood’s natural appearance is retained for longer, thanks to the superior resistance to the effects of UV exposure.”

He added, “Accoya®LathamCLAD is a fantastic material for external specification and fits perfectly with our already established range of sustainable products.” In addition to cladding, sidings and facades, Accoya® wood is also ideal for windows, doors and decking. ACCOYA® and the Trimarque Device are registered trademarks owned by Titan Wood Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Accsys Technologies PLC, and may not be used or reproduced without written permission. Roofing & Cladding

Architectural Mesh Cladding at Holland Park School With the brief to create a building that neither looked nor felt like a school, Aedas Architects designed this school in London. The school building with its unusual façade is wrapped with a curved brise soleil made of architectural wire mesh by Haver & Boecker. The wave-like wire mesh cladding made of architectural weave type EGLA-MONO softens the geometry of the building and creates an effective aesthetic sun protection screen in front of the classrooms. This transparent façade allows unobstructed views from inside the classrooms and reflects the sunrays to protect the interior from overheating.

Permavent’s Solution to Zero Carbon

T

he future of construction is moving towards a considerable over haul with the government’s plans to go carbon neutral. This zero carbon proposal will significantly affect the roofing industry, especially in areas that rely on the use of cement and concrete, such as tiles and pointed verges to name just a couple. Each standard bag of cement contains 20 kilos of CO2. The carbon footprint can be heavily reduced by not encouraging and relying on the use of cement, but instead providing alternative and more efficient methods. The Easy Roof System from Permavent, which recently was named on the Queen’s birthday honours list for winning the Queen’s Award for Innovation, does just that and pushes this zero carbon movement forward. The use of natural slate is as close to zero carbon as you can get in this industry. Through using Easy Slate from Permavent’s system, you can now use natural slates in roofing in ways that was only previously possible with manmade concrete tiles. Easy Slate eliminates the need for these manmade concrete tiles and is simply a side check strip placed beneath the slates at the perp joins. This allows natural slate to be installed on roofs with pitches that can and weather proof without effecting the traditional aesthetics and building practices. The cement pointed verge is another major contributor to the carbon footprint in the roofing industry, especially when considering the maintenance that is frequently required. Due to the cement mortars absorbent nature, repair work or complete replacements are common with this popular verge method. Permavent’s unique Easy Verge removes the requirement of this approach and eliminates any use of cement. The product fits neatly over the battens and beneath the slates where the unique rubber super seals prevent water creeping in. It is the only dry verge that doesn’t leak and provides a perfect verge every time. The longevity of a roof using the Easy Roof System and natural slate is greatly improved, whether it be through function or appearance, compared to a concrete tile roof. Also, with this improved lower roof pitch utilised, far fewer materials will be required per build and further reduces the carbon impact. Other benefits of the Easy Roof System include an improvement in roof ventilation which is sufficient to clear roof condensation, a high level of versatility, a low impact solution for listed and conservation building renovations and comes with a 40 year guarantee. More information can be found at www.permavent.co.uk Telephone: 01305 766703 Email: post@permavent.co.uk

Environmentally Friendly and Chemical Free.

Mechanical weed removal offers an environmentally friendly method of weed, moss and algae removal from footpaths, pavements and other hard surfaces. Kersten's special brushes not only remove the offending weeds and moss, but also remove the cause; organic detritus that harbours the moisture that allows the growth. Moisture that can lead to spalling on hard but poorly maintained surfaces. Chemical use is highly controversial and topical and any way of reducing it is welcome. Kersten's various brushes can be used with a variety of units, either self- propelled pedestrian or tractor mounted. They can be used on a variety of hard surfaces such as concrete, tarmac and block paving. Even deep set cobbled surfaces pose no problem for the Kersten system. Remember that to keep moss at bay repeated regular sweeping is essential. No chemicals required. For further details call: 0118 986 9253 or visit: www.kersten-machines.com

BBA Technical Approval Gained for Y-wall ™ O

n the back of launching a new website buildingboards.co.uk - which is the first marketing initiative in a new brand development plan, RCM has announced gaining BBA 14/5109 Technical Approval for Y-wall ™ - external sheathing board. As a major UK supplier of building boards and facades, with a comprehensive range for all applications - RCM recognise the importance of providing quality certified products which have been rigorously tested, to meet the demands of a challenging construction industry.

Y-wall ™ is a calcium silicate based fibre cement building board, offering excellent fire properties as well as high levels of dimensional stability, even in exposed conditions. Y-wall ™ is used primarily as an external sheathing or fire rated building board. Used extensively on both metal and timber frame structures, the product is applied behind all types of facade solutions, as well in floors and roofs offering a non-combustible classification. Y-wall ™ can be cut, drilled and nailed offering many of the properties required by frame and cladding contractors.

Managing Director of RCM, Ian Quinton said: “We constantly strive to innovate and develop our range of building boards and facades. Testing and certification is an inherent part of this development. We are committed to working with frame manufacturers and cladding installers and are looking to develop partnerships to enhance Y-wall ™ in specific applications. We are further investing in R & D to ensure our Y-wall ™ system is the optimum non-combustible sheathing solution for all construction applications.”

Waterproof Concrete stepped up a gear this year.

T

ruly waterproof concrete makes a huge difference. No longer does waterproof mean “no visible leaks but vapour will always be drying off so you need extra heating and ventilation to cope”. Now, waterproof means that after the concrete has cured the inside surface of “a basement will dry and stay dry for ever”. Well, to be more realistic, not for ever but several hundred years. We just don’t know how many. Early last year the UK’s Concrete Society took a long, hard look at water-resisting concrete admixtures and found a terrible lack of evidence that any did very much of

any real worth. In fact, they cautioned that much of the improvement might only be because of reduced water to cement. They produced a graph of data from a number of BBA certificates that proved that they all reduced the passage of water through concrete but that none of them prevented it. They concluded that concentrating on reduced water cement ratios and choosing cement carefully might be better than buying any of the proprietary, certificated products. They must have known that in the 3 countries that together produce more than 60% of the world’s concrete they

make completely waterproof concrete with just pure OPC cement, a lower water/cement ratio and the world’s most powerful plasticiser. We have that best plasticiser in stock and we get concrete with it in tested for permeability of water under sustained pressure. Zero penetration means completely impermeable, even under pressure. We supply direct to the user cutting out the concrete producer. The world’s best concrete plasticiser is 1. So much more waterproof that it is the only truly waterproof concrete. 2. Cheaper due to both Asian economies of scale and our cutting out the middle man here. 3. Proven on each project to be completely impermeable to BS EN 123908-2009. 4. We also supply supervision and training of supervisors. If the concrete delivered is proven beyond all doubt to be completely waterproof, any leaks can only be down to workmanship. The culprit must pay for repairs. This new additive means the end of disputes and delays over leaks. However our name is Waterproof Concrete With Site Supervision Ltd, because with the right supervision no concrete should visibly leak. Step up a gear this year and get your basement built to be dry. www.waterproofconcrete.co.uk 01438 900303
