RIBA names designers of 2019 summer installation The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
has today revealed that architectural design studio You+Pea have been selected to create an installation at the RIBA’s landmark HQ building in central London. Their proposal was selected from 75 submissions to an open call on the theme of ‘Boundaries’. You+Pea’s installation
– a series of virtual and built follies - will be on show at the Architecture Gallery, RIBA, 66
Portland Place, London from 4 June to August 2019.
You+Pea is the architectural design studio of Sandra Youkhana and Luke Caspar Pearson. Their work explores the integration of video game technologies into architectural design. Their installation ‘Playing the Picturesque’
will explore the movement between physical and virtual realms and asks whether such boundaries are now so fluid that we can consider virtual worlds as sites for realising
architecture in their own right. The installation will take the form of a series of scaled folly structures extracted from real picturesque
landscapes, extended into interactive virtual game environments through digital projections. Twisting their traditional role as markers in the landscape, the follies become junctions between virtual and physical growing and changing in response to the movement of visitors through the gallery.
The selected project was chosen by the following panel: Marie Bak Mortensen, Head of Exhibitions, RIBA; Max Dewdney, Architect, Principal at Max Dewdney Architects and selected practice of the 2017 Open Call; Chris Turner, Keeper of Design, Architecture and Digital, V&A; Tom Ravenscroft, Deputy Editor, Dezeen and Shumi Bose, Curator Exhibitions , RIBA.

BSA responds to FCA duty of care proposal Christopher Lawrenson MBE, Head of Legal Services at the BSA comments: “The key issues regarding conduct in financial services in the early 2000s

Rental expert Just Landlords provides its analysis on the recent property rental news and how to ensure a smooth eviction process.
The Government’s recent announcement to scrap Section 21 and ban no-fault evictions is one of the biggest moves to improving tenants’ rights and promoting more stable housing for privately rented households. Currently, Section 21 enables private landlords to evict tenants with as little as eight weeks’ notice after a fixed notice period has come to an end. This part of the 1988 Housing Act is one of the biggest causes of family homelessness within the UK, while also limiting the tenant’s ability to maintain secure and stable housing.

South Downs Glazed Extension This property is a sympathetic modern extension to a traditional flint barn deep in the South Downs. Pfeiffer Design, under the guidance of British Institute of Interior Design Registered Interior Designer, Susie Pfeiffer, handled the entire project from start to finish, working with a trusted professional team including architects, structural engineers and the main contractor. At over 300 square metres, it was a major undertaking: we spent two years in the planning stage, followed by a year of construction, then a further six months of interior furnishing and outdoor landscaping.
The building marries vernacular knapped flint, slate and bricks with contemporary glass and decking. Our efforts were rewarded with a magnificent contemporary building that blends seamlessly with the original. We also won a prestigious Sussex Heritage Award, which recognise and celebrate the highest achievements in conservation, restoration and design. The extension was designed and built to minimise its carbon footprint. We specified and installed the latest sustainable technologies, including a ground-source heat pump to provide heating and hot water, a rainwater 8
harvesting system to provide water for the garden, an unobtrusive photovoltaic slate system to produce electricity, and a sedum roof to reduce rainwater run-off and flood risk. Lighting was a central element of the design brief. Inside, we created an atmospheric scheme based on a combination of decorative, sculptural pendants and concealed hi-tech LED lighting. The exterior lighting scheme was carefully integrated into the landscape design, highlighting the courtyard and the textured masonry walls to great effect.
9
The project began with a huge dig-out to keep the extension roof below the level of the historic barn. The courtyard garden was surrounded by an original flint wall; we used modern gabions filled with limestone as a contemporary take on this vernacular style. The koi carp pond was positioned so the sound of running water would be audible inside the house, creating a calming background sound; reflections from the water play on the internal walls and ceilings when the sun comes out. We planted four white Himalayan birch trees to mark out the external dining area; simple prairie-grass borders give height and movement all year. The porcelain tiles in the glazed entrance were laid from inside to out, creating a contemporary platform and blurring the boundary between the two areas.

gpad London Secures Top Prize at the Evening Standard New Home 2018 Awards Architecture and interior design practice gpad london ltd won the Best London Home category at the prestigious Evening Standard New Homes 2018 Awards on Friday 19th, and went on to secure the top prize, the Grand Prix trophy. The prize was awarded for Wittering House, a stylish home built on a difficult infill site in Finsbury Park, North London. Contemporary in design, and providing a discreet intervention in a street of Victorian houses, the 829 sq. ft. twobedroom home is a contextual and sympathetic response to its location.
The Grand Prix Award is presented to the crème de la crème of all the homes and developments honoured at the Evening Standard Awards. gpad beat some strong competition, with 14 other award winners, including Powell Tuck Associates, Barratt London and Hogarth Architects. gpad london’s winning design is a modest yet elegant two-bedroom house on the site of a small derelict garage. Architect Charles Bettes spotted the potential of the small plot, measuring a mere 6x7 metres, and set about creating an affordable home for him and his wife Vicki Lim-Bettes.
12
The challenge faced by Charles was how to create a comfortable layout and a relaxing home on the tiny 6x7m site surrounded by Victorian terraces. gpad london delivered a contemporary design without being incongruous with the other buildings in its vicinity. Set over three levels and clad in brick and bronze, the house feels larger due to careful consideration of every inch and clever use of dual aspect rooms with a lightwell and free-flowing spaces. This is further complemented by a coherent material language and a subtle palette of muted colours. The sleek, warm and subtle interior is relaxed and calming, with whitewashed oak panelling and resin floors. Charles Bettes of gpad london, comments: “Having my home considered London home of the year really feels like a fantastic achievement. It is testament that great design does not require a huge budget or a lengthy time scale – Wittering House was completed in just ten months and on a relatively modest budget. While the site is tiny and the house is not large, the innovative layout ensures the 13
interior areas feel spacious, successfully illustrating that with a thoughtful, well-considered approach to a site, good quality living spaces can be produced. We’re currently working on other infill projects and have a lengthy track record of creating wonderful spaces of all sizes on difficult sites. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how we can really get the most out of a small, awkward site. Scooping the Grand Prix amongst such amazing architecture is a wonderful underlining of the team’s ability.” Winners were announced at the Evening Standard New Homes Awards Friday 18 May at the Dorchester Hotel, Mayfair. This is gpad london’s second national award win, they are the 2017 winners of the British Council of Offices (BCO) National Award for the regeneration of Concordia Works in Leeds city centre turning a derelict yarn and cord warehouse into modern office accommodation.

Safer Heating For SEN School Safe surface temperature specialists, Contour, have recently completed a project with Walton Hall Academy to provide LST safety radiator guards to the school that will protect students from burns and reduce the risk of injuries around their radiators. Walton Hall is a special educational needs school in Staffordshire. Their previous radiator covers needed to be replaced to allow staff easier access for cleaning and maintenance as students were often pushing small items through the grilles.
Formica Group brings prepacked Scandi-style cladding to UK shelves Formica Group, a leading global manufacturer of surfacing products continues its innovative approach to rainscreen cladding, with the introduction of new VIVIX® Lap high performance exterior weatherboard cladding. VIVIX Lap is a modern alternative to wood and fibre cement plank cladding, providing great looks, quick and simple installation and requiring little ongoing maintenance.
With close consultation to their needs, Contour provided 19 DeepClean LST radiator covers with radius edges and bullnose corners, which eliminated the risk of children injuring themselves on sharp edges. The DeepClean design also features pencil proof grilles, which addressed another one of the schools problems.
Pre-cut VIVIX Lap planks are applied in an overlap arrangement, providing a classic cladding style, with a modern twist. Aimed at residential and commercial audiences, including installers and self-builders, VIVIX Lap planks can be applied to everything from new build housing and renovation projects, garden offices, sheds and garages, to commercial business parks and retail outlets.

Westbury Joinery Supplying quality timber and doors that fit with the style of the property lies in the ability of the designer to balance scale and proportion, but also to realise the client’s vision and what they want to achieve. While it might look like a modernised timber-framed barn, this unique property is actually a new build.
First there’s the sense of splendour, as guests to the house are welcomed by the magnificent entrance door with double-height direct glazed screen. Inside, it’s certainly a hallway and staircase that makes a statement, consisting of full length glazing to fully maximise on the amount of sunlight streaming in.
The owner wanted to replicate the style of traditional barn conversions typically found across Essex, with their classic black weather boarding and their domineering gable roofs.
Able to deliver bespoke, one-of-a-kind designs on a larger scale, the units for the entrance hall were so big that we glazed them on site before installing them.
For this project we carefully selected products that had quality and style, so that our client could focus on creating their dream home.
The striking new windows are painted in an elegant Granite shade from our Westbury paint collection, perfectly offsetting the black cladding and giving the property a modern aesthetic. 16
We fitted a mix of French and standard casement windows throughout the house so that it would comply with new build escape regulations. Ensuring a sleek and consistent look, we made sure that the lines of the windows were perfect aligned between the different floor levels. The entrance door itself is a contemporary, horizontallyboarded door made from Accoya®, with a insulating Tricoya® panels. Predominantly used in all of our joinery products, this is an engineered timber which is dimensionally stable with outstanding durability. It is water resistant, virtually rot proof, doesn’t swell, shrink, twist or warp and will have minimal moment in the joints, ensuring a long lasting finish. Unlike most hardwoods it’s also environmentally friendly, manufactured from sustainable pine forests. Also painted in Granite to match the windows, the entrance door
features polished chrome ironmongery from our standard range and a glazed central vision panel. We supplied three sets of folding stacking doors, with two at the back of the property and one at the front which matches the first floor windows.
Above the rear folding door, which mirrors the main glazing at the front of the building, we inserted a covered structural steel element with a Tricoya® panel which was proudly engraved with the house name.

Helifix concealed repairs restore failed arches at listed brewery The 170 year old, Grade ll listed, Hook Norton Brewery in Oxfordshire, was suffering from internal and external cracking due to the failure of 15 brick arches. This was caused by the decay of internal timbers and movement of the surrounding brickwork. HeliBars were bonded into mortar beds above each opening, on both the interior and exterior walls, forming masonry beams that reinforced the brickwork, supported the wall above and spread the loads. Other cracks were stitched using single HeliBars bonded across the cracks. These sympathetic repairs efficiently and economically restored integrity whilst retaining the original materials and aesthetics of this important listed structure.

Comprising a total of 168 residences, this phase two consent will deliver both houses and apartments across a number of plots including 24 three and four bedroom houses and 144 one, two and three bedroom apartments, a large number of which will offer spectacular uninterrupted views across the Firth of Forth towards the iconic Forth Bridge. Commenting on the City of Edinburgh Council’s decision, Matthew Garstang of Edinburgh Marina Holdings said: “We are delighted to have received detailed planning permission for phase two of the Edinburgh Marina development. This is an important stepping stone in the creation of this
world-class development comprising the landmark Edinburgh Marina, over 800 new homes including Royal Wharf the Living for Retirement block and the new Hyatt Regency Spa & Conference Hotel and local amenities” The £500 million Edinburgh Marina development is leading the Edinburgh Waterfront regeneration in Granton. Strong pre-sales enquiries have already been recorded following the launch, late last year, of early reservations for the first phase of Royal Wharf - Luxury Living for Retirement, Edinburgh Marina’s retirement scheme, demonstrating the demand for waterfront homes just a stones-throw from the centre of Scotland’s capital city.

Promap v2 launches free interactive viewable data layers Landmark Information has launched interactive data layers on the brand new Promap v2, for free. As part of a significant investment in its digital mapping and data platform, the free viewable data layers provide architects with the ability to instantly view flood risk data, commercial ownership information and land use designation data on top of a mapped view. Architects can now view Flood Zone 2, Flood Zone 3 and Surface Water flooding data from the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales, covering a 500-metre area, on a mapped views. Multiple return periods are available to determine low, medium or high risk relating to surface water flooding. This provides an early-warning-system as to whether a full Flood Risk Assessment is required.
The Corporate Ownership Data provides freehold or leasehold data, owners’ name and address and the site’s title number, within a 100-metre zone on OS MasterMap, while the Land Use Designations means architects benefit from simplified access to land use and local plan data, within a 500-metre area, as a standardised free map layer. Chris Loaring at Landmark Information said: “The future of digital mapping is now: users can view a wide range of location data, for free, on Promap v2. The interactive viewable data layers supports our customers in accessing more than just maps from Promap; instead the data layers will help their due diligence, planning applications and overall project planning, and can be viewed free of charge.” To try Promap v2, visit www2.promap.co.uk

Tiny Holiday Home i29 interior architects & chris collaris In the middle of nature at the Vinkeveense plassen, i29 interior architects and Chris Collaris designed tiny holiday home.
On the outside the diversity in size and the interconnected positioning create a sculptural image, looking different from every angle.
With a footprint of only 55 m2, this house still has a luxurious feel of space, and all around panoramas to the surrounding nature. This compact home is built for a family of four, including a living room, a kitchen/dining room, a patio, three bedrooms, one bathroom and two toilets.
In order to intensify this sculptural quality, all facades have a minimal design with invisible roof endings and window frames detailed behind the wood facade.
The layout is developed from the insideout, the smart arrangement of functions make use of every cm2. Situated on an elongated island plot close to the lake, the positioning of the building volume is related to the views on the surrounding water and the orientation on the sun. By dividing the volume into four parts, the panoramic views and the invading sunlight become very specific.
All volumes have big windows or sliding doors which can be opened completely to fully merge the inside with the outside. On the inside, the dimensions and ceiling heights of the different volumes clearly articulate the separate areas and functions in the house. Long sightlines crossing the outside patio provide a visual connection. By opening up large sliding doors of the patio the volumes of the kitchen and living are physically connected. 26
Custom furniture and integrated cabinets accentuate the graphical quality on the inside. The design team made use of simple materials like natural oak wooden panels -or stained black to combine with the rough pinewood facade- and a continuing polished concrete floor. They strived for a design strategy in which architecture and interior come together in a model combination. Each volume has its own program. By linking interior components to the architecture and vice versa, the result is a high-quality project not dependent on expensive materials or technical show. In every detail, they aimed for the ultimate space-efficient solution. Every aspect of the design is approached to produce a pure and unified experience to leave a strong impression. Making quality projects is, in their opinion, not always ‘the bigger the better’. With simple yet smart interventions, this project is of the highest standard and at the same time energy efficient, eco-friendly, and built with a small footprint. In this sense it’s a model example of a tiny house; smart, comfortable but with no concessions to quality in both the interior and architectural design; small is beautiful. www.i29.nl

The Water Lily House Winchester based architects, AR Design Studio, have submitted plans for a new build ‘Paragragh 79’ (formally Paragraph 55) floating house in rural Hampshire.
This has been distilled within the design process, and from this the form of the water lily emerged, the plant itself playing an important role in enhancing the ecosystems of pond life.
Entitled The Water Lily House, the house floats atop an existing disused reservoir that once served the surrounding fields. The design is derived from the initial concept of a floating lily pad, the proposal appears to delicately float upon the water.
The scheme mimics the lily’s qualities. The plant works to keep the temperature down by the shade cast by the leaves, helps to keep algae growth down and gives shelter from both the sun and predators to the pond life inside. The lily serves to protect the life which sustains it, and the house aims to replicate this behaviour.
Considering the lack of biodiversity on the reservoir, the design team saw this as an opportunity for the lake to become an asset to the site by improving the quality of the existing reservoir and the relationship between land and water. Biodiversity not only informs the surrounding context, but also the initial concept, leaning heavily on a symbiotic relationship between the building and site.
The siting of the proposal offers the opportunity to take full advantage of the 360o panoramic views of the site. The design responds with a radial form, comprising of a series of compartmentalised ‘pods’. Each are orientated to capture specific views within the site, that are further enriched by a detailed landscape design scheme.
30
The two primary living spaces, the lounge/kitchen/dining and the sitting room, have long views over the lake and the open countryside fields. The access to the house is situated at the eastern point of the reservoir, to allow access to from main drive and the proposed garage. The two bedroom ‘pods’ face the more intimate gardens, allowing privacy through shorter views. Extensive full height glazing allows connectivity between the internal and external spaces, whilst feature windows frame individual aspects of the surroundings. At the centre of the house is the courtyard around which is the main circulation. The roof from each of the pods tapers towards this courtyard, allowing it to open up towards the sky. The space offers a sense of intimacy that contrasts with the expansive views over the reservoir that features in the rest of the house.
The Water Lily House is accessed via a footbridge from the entrance courtyard and proposed garage. The garage is hidden within the existing bank of the reservoir, in order to minimise the visual impact on the site. The guest bedrooms to the north will face a sculpture garden with an associated boardwalk, which is screened from the main road by an existing hedge as well as proposed planting. To the south of the house, a swimming pond links to a floating reed bed and jetty, allowing boats to be moored. The building responds to the site and the defining characteristics of the local area with a contemporary approach that has resulted in the analysis of materials similar to those used in the surrounding agricultural vernacular. Metal cladding was explored, a bronze tone having a distinctive appearance. Though not an exact material match, the tones were found to correspond with the existing buildings.
31
The suitability of metal cladding considering the moist environment was also researched, with the proposed material controlling the patina on its surface, avoiding corrosion of the material itself. To compliment this, timber details are used, mimicking the use of timber cladding in the agricultural context. Where susceptible to weathering, the saturation of the timber will mute over time while the durability is maintained.
The Water Lily House is unique in its design, providing an innovative dwelling in an otherwise underutilised site. The immediate surroundings will be significantly enhanced, with the remodelling of the existing reservoir and addition of sensitive landscaping. AR Design Studio is an RIBA chartered architects practice, based in Winchester, Hampshire, specialising in elegant and imaginative contemporary new homes, extensions, renovations and multi- plot developments. Making the impossible possible: The custom build journey Building a home is an aspiration for many, but often, the perceived realities can put a number of people off. Worries about unknown costs, gaining planning permission and dealing with contractors can deter people from exploring this exciting route to getting a new home. As an antidote to this, custom build new homes are coming to the market, offering a happy medium between new and self-build homes, with the benefits of high-quality living space, tailored to suit people’s needs, without the heavy lifting. The opportunities and options that custom build new homes provide could make them the future of UK housing.
Design freedom is the main advantage of custom building, enabling people to create the layout to suit their needs and tastes. Many custom build new homes are built with no internal load-bearing walls, so rooms can be designed without any restrictions and layouts easily changed in future. This ability to construct a home that fits the personality and requirements of a person without starting from scratch is an innovative concept. Custom building allows those who love to cook to have a large kitchen with all the appliances and features they could desire, while those with growing families can have spare bedrooms and a dedicated playroom. 34
Future-proofing is also a possibility, particularly for those who may be approaching retirement or have already retired. Wider door frames, a downstairs bedroom and washroom, and lower light-switches can all be created, so a forever home can truly be forever. Custom building enables people to design a home that reflects their needs, both now and in the future. This not only eases pressure on the UK housing market, but also allows people to stay comfortable as they age. Accessibility is essential when it comes to purchasing a house, in both physical and financial terms. Custom building is increasingly ticking both boxes. As well as designing a house to suit both expected and unexpected needs, custom builds are financially achievable for even first-time buyers.
The Government’s Help to Buy scheme is available to use when purchasing a custom build home, giving first-time buyers access to their perfect home from the outset. Rather than using their first home as a way to get on the property ladder, first-time buyers are given the opportunity to create a long-term home that can grow with them. Graven Hill, a self-build and custom new build housing development in Bicester, has embraced the benefits that custom building has to offer. Here, creating a custom build new home begins with picking a site. People can then choose the house and layout, and floorplans are allocated to plots in keeping with their size. In comparison to other new build homes, custom building gives people control over the layout of the property and the all-important finishes, allowing the rest to be left to professionals. Completion time varies from property to property, as houses can be bought at different stages.
Generally, the earlier a purchaser gets involved in the process, the more options they have. However, some custom builds can be completed in just a matter of months. Building houses of quality rather than quantity could be the solution to the housing crisis in the long run.
35
The accessibility and individuality of custom builds means that noone is cut off from owning a home they want to live in for many years. Instead of hopping from house to house, people can grow in a home they’ve designed for themselves.

Luscombe ‘Luscombe’ is an exclusive gated development of three luxury houses located in the ‘Luscombe Valley’ in Poole, Dorset, designed by David James Architects for Excellare. The designs evolved from the concept of ‘organic architecture’; amplifying harmony between the dwellings and their setting. The house designs complement the sylvan setting allowing the occupants to feel at one with their environment. The site at Luscombe, occupies a spectacular natural wooded setting presiding over Poole Harbour, with views to Brownsea Island and the Isle of Purbeck beyond. Luscombe is a private enclave surrounded by pine trees adjoining the Luscombe Valley Nature Reserve and the renowned Parkstone Golf Course.
The development is also within easy walking distance to Poole Harbour, and is located within easy reach of the Sandbanks Penninsular. These three contemporary superhomes, named Optima, Orseleta and Ortega, are solidified into the ground with natural stone. Light horizontal aluminium elements link vertical timber fins, which compliment the sylvan surroundings. The houses have been designed to express a feeling of light with suspended elements in space, with floor to ceiling glass seamlessly integrating inside and out, whilst framing views. Two of the three houses offer living space over three floors, including a pool and fitness suite to the lower ground floor. 38
The smaller of the three, Ortega, offers it’s own impressive credentials. On arrival one is struck by the cavernous naturally illuminated double volume entrance hall from which all areas on the ground floor can be accessed. The entrance is flooded with light from the large over-head roof lights. A first floor bridge dissects this space and allows access to the study. The use of contrasting, tactile materials adds further to this space. Norstone stone cladding wraps around the central wall from which the bespoke walnut open tread staircase emerges. In-wall feature lighting follows the treads up to the first floor accommodation, comprising the bedrooms, master suite and study.

David James Architects undertook the planning, detailed design and interior architecture for this project. The development is currently marketed by Luxury & Prestige Realty, in Sandbanks. Photos courtesy of Luxury & Prestige Realty.

Maxtop launches next generation of its one-of-a-kind worktops
Dallmer unveils its new Individual shower channels
Twyford: The perfect partner for your next bathroom project
Maxtop Quartz has revealed the next generation of its one-of-a-kind worktops, complete with a seamless finish, stylish 1.5mm bevelled edge and now including marble-effect finishes. Over the last 12 months the company has invested £2m into building a purpose-built factory in China to manufacture the new product, which is being hailed an ‘extraordinary engineering feat’ by those in the industry.
In response to the growing demand for level-access showers, Dallmer has added two more new flush-in-floor shower channels to its DallFlex system, bringing the number of Dallmer shower channels that can be combined with a single drain body to an impressive nine!
From planning and logistics to stock availability and aftersales, Twyford exceeds expectations to offer a wide range of bathroom solutions for any development.
Historically, each Maxtop surface required four separate pieces of quartz edge to be assembled around the patented honeycomb interior to create the worktop. Now, thanks to the company’s significant investment in R&D, the new generation of product utilises just one solid piece of quartz to encase the lightweight centre, streamlining the manufacturing process and guaranteeing a seamless look and finish.

Cinderella Incineration Toilets the Burning Questions Answered by LeeSan What are they: Cinderella incineration toilets burn biological waste at high temperatures, leaving only an insignificant quantity of fine, harmless ash, amounting to the equivalent of about one teacup for four people during one week of use. The toilet may be used around 70 times before emptying is required. Cinderella incineration toilets are currently installed by over 60,000 users worldwide. How Do they work: Waste is burned in an integral combustion chamber. The harmless gases from this combustion are dispersed through a vent pipe. In contrast with other toilet systems, incineration toilets eliminate all waste on site without the need for connection to the main sewer or a septic tank.
Correctly used, Cinderella incineration toilets are odourless, hygienic and safe, providing a user experience similar to a normal domestic system. The user simply inserts a bowl liner, uses the toilet then presses a button to evacuate and incinerate the waste. Cinderella toilets are suitable for all ages and are child safe. Where can they be used:
Power Requirement:
Available around the world for decades, incineration toilets are a commonly used alternative in residential and commercial applications without easy access to public utilities.
Cinderella incineration toilets use either 240v electricity or LPG as the combustion energy source.
These include mountain cabins, remote areas, tiny homes, off-grid structures, mobile homes, boats and many more. They do not require a water supply or septic system.

Monochrome Kitchens As one of the most popular interior trends of 2019, monochrome takes centre stage in homes all over the country. Its main concept, the classic combination of blacks and whites, shows us that you can still produce a unique and contemporary kitchen using a simplistic colour palette. Sticking to just these two colours may sound limiting, but if you add eyecatching accents in the form of colours or materials, such as brass handles or large feature lighting, then the room will be transformed and feel more personal. Use the monochrome style as your canvas to add these accents that connect your kitchen to your home. This is a style that never dates and will always give you endless possibilities.
Emphasising the units
Family-Friendly Monochrome
Using lighter tones for the cabinet units creates the illusion that the space looks larger than it is.
To create a family-friendly area, use materials that are sleek to the eye but are also easy-to-clean. For the kids, consider installing a giant chalkboard on one wall, as this will work as a great distraction during meal preparation, but will also offer a striking focus. These elements will help you to achieve a stylish look whilst making sure the space remains comfortable.
To achieve a contemporary look, team these pale tones with retro tiling and dark sleek worktops and splash backs for an effortlessly dramatic feel. Use colour blocking to provide additional depth to the space. Add patterns and textures Incorporating a splash of bold patterns and a mixture of different textures will rejuvenate a black and white style. For a real design statement and to add visual depth, opt for a striking black and white floor such as a chequered chessboard or even a retro geometric pattern.
Go all out with accessories All tones of timber work effectively with a monochrome scheme, so you can't go wrong if you add a timber work surface. Equally, brass and copper accessories work brilliantly, as the dark backdrop means these finishes truly stand out. This rule applies with soft furnishings as well, even more so than using a lighter kitchen.

Coatings, Sealants & Paints
Earthborn Silicate used for medieval hall house A listed north Devon home, built around 1550, has been given a contemporary look thanks to its redecoration with Earthborn paints. The previous owners limewashed it inside and out, but current owner Simon Clarke said: “The house is built of Devon cob, a clay soil based building material. It’s important that these old, natural walls can breathe, to prevent damage caused by moisture build up. So I needed breathable paints, but I didn’t want to use limewash again. I wanted to create a more contemporary feel, use a wider palette of colours and avoid the regular repainting that’s needed with limewash.” Simon’s research drew him to Earthborn paints, which can be used straight over existing limewash. He selected Earthborn’s Ecopro Silicate Masonry system for the external walls.
“GIVE YOUR PROJECT THE FINISH IT DESERVES.”
The Ecopro Silicate Masonry System offers a durable, easy to use alternative to limewash and conventional masonry paints. The result is a very hard wearing, water and weather resistant barrier. It offers the same high levels of breathability as limewash but is easier to use and lasts much longer.

Meaningful Connections Ice Shore House by Indesign Inc The project brief was unusual, to say the least: “Ensure me freedom in my advanced years.” In 2013, an elderly citizen sought out the services of Gary Conrath. Both knew each other well since Indesign had conceived and constructed the co-property building where the woman had been living for a decade. The third storey dwelling was no longer suitable for her. She wanted to live at ground level, in an environment designed to meet her anticipated future needs.
Exterior Mobility Following the advice of her architect, the client purchased a vacant lot in Verdun, a neighbourhood with history dating from the beginning of New France. Of prime importance, the site provided several alternatives to automobile driving. Bus travel, as preferred by seniors is immediately available in front, and the Métro, Montréal’s subway is but a short walk away.
46
With an east-west orientation, the narrow 30-foot lot extends 120 feet in depth. Rather than occupying the full width, the architect opted for a footprint that allows for an open passageway adjacent to the southern faรงade. This approach preserves the privacy of the main entrance while also distinguishing the project from the densely built, shoulder to shoulder neighbouring homes. In order to facilitate eventual wheelchair use, a smooth level surface connects the city sidewalk, the parking space and the main entrance.
47
Anticipating the future In regards to his approach, Gary Conrath expresses the design paradox whereby existing urban forms must be challenged, but not so far as to disrupt the established architectural setting. In Verdun, the built environment is characterized by the recurring archetype of the duplex, adopted in the 1930s for financial considerations. If needed, owners and their families could curtail their spatial needs, live solely on the ground floor, and rent out the upper floor. The idea of housing that can be adapted to accommodate significant life changes resonates throughout the project, with open, flat spaces found on two levels. The first floor includes essential living spaces including washroom and bedroom. The upstairs features a music room, study, artist’s studio and secondary washroom. Furthermore, should the owner ever require home care services, the studio space would serve as living quarters for an attending careperson. With that possibility in mind, the building includes a private entrance on the south side with direct access to the stairs.
48
Referencing the Past Several elements give the building’s architecture meaningful connections to the area’s history. First is the idea of a massive structure, common under the French regime, but expressed in a contemporary design language. Moreover, features typical to the traditional neighbourhood houses are integrated into the project, the inverted roof slopes serving as a case in point. This laneway design from the pre-rain gutter era serves to drain runoff from front and rear surfaces to a central point. More pragmatically, the structure’s form allows the inclusion of a discreet skylight not seen from the street. The resulting volumetrics combine to provide a complete solution in respect of municipal restrictions and the 29foot height requirement. Demonstrating sensitivity to Verdun’s history are the suspended moulded-glass modules on the street façade. This frosted veil, positioned before the 25foot front window, evokes memories of the Dominion Glass Co., founded in 1905, as well as of the ice-cutters who were so important to the neighbourhood’s economy in the 19th century. 49
Inside and Outside and Vice Versa The building itself is a design of cantilevered brick masses. Most striking is the strong connection made between the interior and exterior through dematerialized surfaces. Seen from the outside, the house’s interior planes replace that which is carved from the exterior walls. According to the designer, “a façade must entice the passer-by and extend a sense of welcome .” The invitation is all the more compelling thanks to the window frames that project outward, toward the street. The inverse is also true: the landscape is brought inside, along with highquality natural light. Diffused by the large east and west glazed surfaces, sunlight grazes along the walls and downward from top to bottom. To better capture sunshine from the south, a central vertical window projecting above the roofline (30 ft.) extends into a skylight feature. In addition, a transparent section of floor
in the middle of the upper level floods the centre of the ground floor with a generous afternoon luminosity. The Therapeutic Aspect Visual fluidity is also a way to mitigate the trials and tribulations of the age at which people can find themselves confined to their home, the risk of depression never far away. The wide openings come into play here,
50
allowing the owner to enjoy either nature or the city without having to go outside: a starry sky above the pool, the shadows of trees and raindrops on the glass catwalk; and on the street side, pedestrians passing by and the colourful morning sky.

PVC-U is perfect for prestigious property’s 46 sash windows Long-standing VEKA Group customer SWC Trade Frames was proud to act as a ‘one-stop-specification-shop’ for a stately six-bedroom new build in the Yorkshire Dales. The Scarborough-based company fabricates high quality Halo products from VEKA Group and was able to supply the 46 Vertical Sliders and 3 sets of French Doors needed for the prestigious job. SWC Sales Director Mark Catchpole explains: “We were delighted to provide everything necessary for our client Selby Glass to complete this Yorkshire manor house to a beautiful standard. “We’ve worked with Selby Glass for years, and the team there know they can rely on the quality of our products without question. We use VEKA Group profile, so we can vouch for the standard of our systems right from raw materials to finished frames, and we can offer enviably swift lead times. These products combine stunning good looks with perfect performance; they look much like traditional timber but offer the additional modern energy-efficiency benefits and low maintenance of PVC-U. “SWC also has an in-house spraying facility, so alongside VEKA Group’s great Variations lamination offering, we can provide any other colour the customer requires and ensure a perfect colour match and cohesive overall finish across all our ranges. “We pride ourselves on going ‘above and beyond’ for our customers. For example, the Halo Vertical Sliders for this job were supplied to an A+11 rating, effectively ‘future proofing’ this project by going beyond the standard specification requirements, and the windows and doors were supplied to Approved Document Q standards for security.” Arthur Fenn, Director of Selby Glass, commented: “This 7400 sq ft stone-
Madeline Settle Photography built manor house was a pleasure to work on. It had been designed and built to an exceptionally high standard by one of our long-standing developer clients, Neil Battye, who knows that quality is key. “Neil works with Selby Glass on a regular basis, and has done for the last 20 years or so, because he knows we constantly strive to exceed his already high expectations. Neil approached us to do the job with the design in mind, and trusted us to find and fit the highest quality products to meet his specification. “We tend to use a number of suppliers, but we knew in this case that SWC would be best able to meet every single one of the specialist requirements. We also trusted the SWC team to operate with speed and professionalism, so that we could – in turn – offer our client a swift turnaround, and we weren’t disappointed. “The job involved 46 Halo Vertical Sliders sprayed Pebble Grey (inside and out) and 3 sets of coordinating French Doors from VEKA Group. “The project looked great and the quality of products we installed from SWC means that they will offer phenomenal performance for years to come. The beauty of PVC-U 51
windows and doors in this day and age, means that we can offer the traditional, classic style of timber sash windows, but they will never need sanding or repainting and they offer ease of operation, along with energy efficiency, acoustic insulation, and security. “The Vertical Sliders and French Doors from VEKA Group were simple and easy to fit. The most difficult thing about the job was not getting distracted by the view!” VEKA Group Sales Director Neil Evans added: “This sprawling rural manor house is a great example of how modern materials and classic aesthetics can be combined to create a ‘timeless’ finish. Selby Glass and SWC trade frames have put VEKA Group systems to great use for their client, showcasing the versatility of these systems for all types of properties. “VEKA Group is proud to work with fabricators and specifiers on everything from sleek city skyscrapers, to historic heritage properties and everything in between. As we often highlight, our products are designed to meet all the specifications you would expect from such an industry-leading supplier, ‘for now, for the future, for life.’” www.vekauk.com

Sun-X Blinds Blinds are a common solution to dealing with glare from the sun, but what is increasingly becoming popular is the desire to maintain a view of the outside world, and avoid a room feeling ‘closed off’. Perforated ‘sunscreen’ blinds are manufactured and fitted by Sun-X in a wide range of commercial and high-end residential properties. The fashion for large glass curtain walling resulted in Sun-X fitting several Sainsbury’s stores with motorised sunscreen roller blinds, up to seven metres in height, to diffuse glare in their checkout and café areas. Although these were mains-powered, there are now available motors with a high-capacity rechargeable lithium battery, which can be connected to a small internal solar panel to provide a constant trickle-charge.
The discrete solar panel connects to a rechargeable, wireless, low-voltage DC motor within the roller blind tubing. No other external componentry is required. It stores, boosts, and efficiently releases power to the motor when required, even in low light. Without the solar panel, on one single charge, the blind can open and close once a day, for six months, or can be charged from a mains socket like a mobile phone if required. Even large windows can benefit from this system, up to 3.5m x 3.5m. The motor also runs very quietly, at less than 40dB. The user is able to control the blinds with the use of a remote handset, wireless wall switch, home automation system, and now even voice control. 54
This environmentally friendly solution will enhance the solar shading sustainability of any building; mainspowered motorised blinds use up electricity even in standby mode. This system offers incredible savings on the installation by eliminating the need for hard-wiring, and the resultant impact to operation, lost revenue, and damage to building fabric caused by the in-wiring process.

Sun-X Window Film
John Bell & Croyden, a prestigious pharmaceutical company with a central London outlet, called upon fellow Royal Warranty holder Sun-X (UK) Ltd, to help problems caused by sunlight on their large picture windows. Their display stock was being faded by the sun, and the customers and staff were suffering from solar heat gain. Sun-X installed their Vista61 ‘clearview’ solar window film, eliminating 99.9% of UV radiation, 49% of solar energy, in a clear colour with minimal reflection so the view in from the street was not impeded. The installation was carried out quickly and efficiently, by Sun-X’s own highly skilled and experienced personnel, during opening hours without disrupting running of the store. Low-E clear window film Heating, cooling and ventilation systems are responsible for over 50% of carbon emissions in non-domestic buildings and are largely impacted by the performance of the building’s glazing.
Traditionally, window films are used to reduce summer cooling requirements. In addition to the benefits of the aforementioned film, the Sun-X MT70E Low-E film also reduces heat loss in winter, providing a true “all-season” solution that can significantly reduce total building energy consumption, often by more than 10%. The Low-E coating reflects over 90% of radiant energy back to its source, reducing the glazing’s U-Value from 5.8 to as low as 3.3, an improvement of up to 44%. This effectively upgrades the insulating performance of a single pane window to close to double pane, and double pane to close to triple pane. Whilst the film reflects solar energy, it absorbs very little, which has the added benefit of minimising thermal stress to the glass, and reflecting air-conditioned air back into the room, rather than being lost through the glass. 56
Return on investment can be obtained in as little as three years, with the film then effectively earning money by lowering fuel bills throughout its expected lifespan of at least 15 years. It will also help companies meet their carbon reduction commitments, and landlords meet minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES) for commercial or residential lets. 01243 826441 www.sun-x.co.uk @sunxuk

Heating Homes of the Future
The 2025 Gas Boiler Ban The Rise of Electric Heating
‘the UK government announced plans to ban gas boilers in all new homes by 2025’ In a recent spring statement, the UK government announced plans to ban gas boilers in all new homes by 2025, forcing property developers, architects, and contractors to choose alternative means of heating future projects. The days of central heating systems are numbered and in today’s environmentally conscious world, a new breed of versatile, efficient, electric systems is ready to take their place…
Electric Heating for New Homes

It’s a bold new direction for us and one that we have been working on in-house for a long time. We firmly believe we’ve identified a unique and valuable opportunity for tradespeople, and anticipate a busy couple of days when doors open in May. Why are we so confident? Well, not only is Ali-deck faster to install than both timber and composite decking, it’s far safer and can span 300% further than traditional decking. Alideck is perfect for both domestic and commercial settings whether it’s for patios, balconies, walkways, bridges or commercial dining areas. The opportunities are endless. Best of all, Ali-deck offers something that is completely unique and is highly-desirable, allowing savvy installers to achieve greater margins on their projects. In fact, with the continued growth of the outdoor living market, tradespeople can pair Ali-deck with one of our in-demand aluminium shelters. This combination can then expertly complement a new aluminium bifold or patio door to create a premium outdoor living space.
The development of Ali-deck is underpinned by our extensive aluminium experience as the original outdoor living specialist. And of course, in addition to Ali-deck, we will be showcasing our range of premium aluminium verandas, canopies, carports and pergolas. These are the systems which are helping over 150 trade partners nationwide capitalise on the buoyant outdoor living market. It’s a range which will also see a new addition as we officially launch our new Simplicity Xtra veranda at The FIT Show. Joining our renowned Simplicity range, the new Xtra system gives tradespeople a roof system which is simple to install without compromising on quality or performance. Along with the Easy Glaze system, Simplicity Xtra features 6mm glass as standard, with upgrade options including self-cleaning and tinted glass. Visitors at the show will be able to see the sleek design in person, achieved in part by the intelligent integrated guttering. Not only is Xtra available in any length with posts every four metres, the system can also achieve a fourmetre projection, making it perfect for any size of property or outside space. 62
Furthermore, it is available in any RAL colour with White and Anthracite Grey available as standard. As to be expected from a Milwood veranda, there are plenty of opportunities for installers to increase their order values, with a full range of upgrades. These include remotecontrolled LED lighting, wall mounted heaters and the Victorian upgrade which gives the system period style posts and embellishments. Ultimately, we are looking forward to meeting both old and new faces at The FIT Show, with plenty to see for both fabricators and installers. Whether tradespeople are looking to offer something completely unique and go in a bold new direction with Ali-deck, or they are seeing the thriving outdoor living market and are looking to offer a system like Simplicity Xtra, we can certainly help. With a complete trade partner support package including a dedicated training academy, The FIT Show is just the beginning of an exciting opportunity for tradespeople to win new business through outdoor living. We look forward to seeing you at Stand K70. For more information call the Milwood Group on 0330 404 9086 or visit www.milwoodgroup.com

Latest innovations and best-sellers bound for Birmingham as CRL exhibits at FIT Show 2019 Leading glazing hardware specialist CRL will be at the FIT Show 2019 when it returns to Birmingham’s NEC in May, with a whole range of innovative and best-selling products to showcase to visitors. Taking up 88 square metres of floor space within the exhibition, the CRL stand will be showing its latest range of easy-to-install, frameless glass hardware for railing, façade, shower, and interior door and office partition applications.
NEW 3D BIM SERVICE LAUNCHED BY ISO CHEMIE Foam tape sealing company ISO CHEMIE has extended the scope of its specialist services with the launch of new 3D BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology. The move will enable architects and designers to integrate high quality scaled digital information around window and door sealing solutions as part of their 3D visualisations and client presentations. BIM is playing an increasingly significant role in the design and delivery of large and
complex fenestration projects and installations in the UK. Product information and specification data from the company’s joint sealing tapes, multi-function joint sealing tapes and in-front-of-wall installation systems such as Winframer will be available initially for downloading free as BIM-ready items via www. portal.iso-chemie.eu or an external database.
One of the many highlights will be the CRL’s Langle Office Partition System. Available for monolithic and laminated glass, the dry-glazed system is easy to install and provides a maximum transparency thanks to its thin profiles for ceilings, floors, walls and door frames. They present many benefits such as reducing sound and closing the gaping joint between glass door, side panel and top light.

Yeoman Rainguard Perfect for Old Chapel Cottage Originally a Methodist Chapel built in 1841, now converted to a home, The Old Chapel Cottage boasts both charming traditional local architecture and stunning views over Nidderdale, an area of outstanding beauty in North Yorkshire. When the current owners, Mr & Mrs Simpson, moved into the property they were keen to improve certain aspects of the cottage which included the replacement of the old discoloured and worn PVC gutters and downpipes along with the rotting timber fascia. Wanting to replace these empathetically and in keeping with the age and location of the property, the Simpsons sourced Yeoman Rainguard’s products after a visit to their stand at the Homebuilding & Renovating Show in Harrogate. Yeoman Rainguard 130 x 100mm deep flow XL Aluminium gutters were installed on the cottage and adjoining garage to accommodate the water flow rates from the pitched roof.
75mm Dia. XL Aluminium downpipes were added topped off with attractive Motif cast aluminium rainwater hoppers. Offering a bespoke design service Yeoman Rainguard were able to accommodate some of the more unusual off sets and projection configurations required to ensure a perfect watertight rainwater system on this project. Finished in a durable black textured polyester powder coating, the new gutters, downpipes and accessories not only have a heritage look that complements the character of the cottage but offer a maintenance free lifecycle of 30 years or more. The Rotting timber fascia was replaced with Yeoman Rainguard “N Type” fascia board, manufactured from GRP- glass reinforced polyester – it’s flexible and lightweight with exceptionally hard wearing, strong properties. Supplied in black to partner with the rainwater goods, this smart looking product will again give a life expectancy of 30 years plus. 68
“When looking to update the rainwater goods after the house purchase, we were keen to choose something that would fit the look, age & character of the building as well as be efficient & long lasting. The team at Yeoman Rainguard helped us to choose the right products & configuration for the project. We also chose Yeoman Rainguard to perform the installation and were delighted with both the installation process and the result.” Helen & Mark Simpson For more information on Yeoman Rainguard’s rainwater systems go to www.rainguard .co.uk or call 0113 279 5854

If you love to keep up with the latest interior fashion, herringbone is your next best friend. Since its creation in the 17th century, herringbone has always been a fashionable choice, and isn’t looking to fall out of vogue any time soon. Many home experts and interior design specialists agree that herringbone is here to stay! Perfect for Minimalist Spaces Minimalism is in fashion! But don’t make the mistake of making your interior space impersonal. Herringbone flooring adds a touch of warmth and energy to the minimalist aesthetic with its textured grains and patterned design.
71
A truly outstanding addition. High Performance Alongside exceptional visual qualities, herringbone offers unrivalled practicality to match. No matter which species of wood you choose, you’re guaranteed to receive a long lifespan, minimal movement, and low maintenance. Herringbone is also highly durable, so you’ll never have to worry about major scratches or scuffs. Hides Visible Damages Herringbone’s iconic angular design not only looks great, but also helps to maintain the appearance of your home. With a myriad of joins, textures, and intricacies visible, the pattern prevents damages from being seen. This is great news for those who aren’t looking to make costly repairs!
SMARTPLY STRONGDECK IS HERE, FROM MEDITE SMARTPLY A smart warehousing solution SMARTPLY STRONGDECK is the brand-new high strength, lightweight, high-performance OSB4 panel ideal for mezzanine floors or other high loadbearing applications – available from 2nd April 2019. Make light work of the most demanding structural applications with this 30mm OSB4 panel ideal for use in humid conditions (Service class 2 as defined in Eurocode 5). Manufactured by innovative timber panel manufacturers MEDITE SMARTPLY, SMARTPLY STRONGDECK is the latest innovation added to its product range that continues to enable contractors and construction professionals to work smarter, not harder. The product launch couldn’t have come at a more pivotal time for the warehousing industry as it was revealed that warehouses in the UK are nearing capacity with around 75% of UK Warehousing Association (UKWA) members saying they were unable to take on new business. The survey by the UKWA pointed to the shortage of space close to major cities for stockpiling goods in case of holdups at ports after a no deal exit from the EU.
Although not a turnkey solution, mezzanine flooring could enable some of the warehouse owners to create additional space above their existing operation, temporarily enabling them to scale up and down to meet demands. SMARTPLY STRONGDECK’s ability to withstand moisture and humid environments also opens the door to food produce storage, increasing flexibility of warehouses across the industry. “Warehouse contractors - look no further” said MEDITE SMARTPLY Product Manager, Colin Wheatley, “In response to a demand for ever stronger solutions to temporary flooring and industrial storage, especially in humid environments, we’ve created a panel that will provide users with a truly flexible solution. “Traditionally mezzanine flooring panels have been chipboard. What we have created is a considerably lighter – up to 17% in some cases - Mezzanine flooring product that maintains its durability and is stronger than some chipboard alternatives. As a result, it is easier to handle and quicker to install due in part to the larger surface area per sheet laid.” 72
Using timber only from their own sustainably managed forests in Ireland, MEDITE SMARTPLY ensure all panels are manufactured with FSC certified timber and contain zero-added formaldehyde. “We have been manufacturing all SMARTPLY products with zeroadded formaldehyde since 2001. As a timber manufacturer that has always placed high importance on wellbeing and environmental concerns it’s imperative that we continue to innovate responsibly.” Manufactured in accordance with the requirements of OSB4 as defined in EN 300, SMARTPLY STRONGDECK contains no core gaps, or hollow pockets and is CE marked in accordance with the harmonised standard EN 13986. The structural properties of SMARTPLY STRONGDECK are derived from extensive testing in accordance with EN 789 while characteristic values are calculated in accordance to EN 1058. Gerroa House Gerroa is a popular holiday destination, on the South Coast of NSW. The village is located at the Northern end of a long beach, adjacent to a lagoon, with the main streets running out along the South side of the headland. This particular site is above the road, and slopes up to the North approximately 5m in elevation. There are extensive views to the South down the beach, as well as a view across the lagoon to the Southwest. There are houses adjacent as well as houses in the foreground of the view. A large Radiata Pine tree existed on the site in the rear corner. The best views are from the level at the rear of the site.
The client’s brief was for a simple holiday house that took most advantage of the site. An easy transition from the beach to the house was required and surfaces are to be hardy so that durability is not a concern. The house needed to accommodate extended family groups, but also act as a simple weekender for a couple. Winter storms on the South coast are ferocious and this site is quite exposed to the South so the house had to be able to cope with this. The built form is articulated into 3 simple elements, under a continuous roof, that wrap around a central external space. 74
The idea was to create an elevated platform that allowed extensive views to the South, yet connected well to the site on the North side. The Living space has a concrete floor, for thermal mass to moderate temperature swings. The roof form lifts up to the North, allowing good winter sun penetration and presents it’s low edge to the South, allowing the strong Southerly winds to pass over . To maximize views and sunlight this space is elongated and runs East / West (across the block). On the East side of the block a wing runs toward the rear of the site, containing the main bedroom, ensuite and studio space. On the west side of the block a larger wing runs to the rear, accommodating the additional bedrooms, a secondary living space and a semi outdoor bathroom. 75
These three forms provide a sheltered outdoor space in the middle, which catches winter sun and is protected from the undesirable winds. Much of the living space on the site is actually outside the buildings, in the courtyard or on decks. This works well with the indoor / outdoor nature of visiting here. Materials throughout relate to the context of a seaside village, they are economical and corrosion resistant. Timber is used extensively, floors are either polished concrete or . Eaves and wall linings are fibre cement. Sustainable features –Correctly orientated thermal mass. Heavy insulation to walls and ceilings, Rainwater harvesting for wc, laundry, garden usage, minimal footprint to building, using less materials and resources, sustainable timber use such as reconstituted timber concealed structure, Heat Pump hot water technology

DRU announces updates to Spartherm wood fire inserts range • • •
Range is streamlined into 2 groups, Design and Linear New brochure and marketing campaign for UK Selected models to be displayed at Hearth & Home exhibition in June 2019
DRU is the official UK distributor for the German designed and made Spartherm range of wood stoves and wood fire inserts. To support the marketing and distribution of the Spartherm brand in the UK, DRU has announced a streamlining of the inserts range, to be followed by a new UK brochure and promotional campaign from April 2019. Spartherm wood fire inserts are available in front view, 2-sided, 3-sided and tunnel versions. They are all Eco Design ready, with high energy efficiency and many sophisticated functions that make them suitable for traditional or contemporary homes.
They are of particular interest to architects and interior designers, who are looking for high end, high specification fires and stoves. One of the principle distinguishing features of Spartherm wood fires is their manual or automatic vertically sliding door mechanisms, which provide easy access to the interiors of the fires in order to replace the logs and for cleaning and maintenance. The new wood fire inserts range is now divided into the Linear series, which has door handles that are an integral part of the frame and the Design series, in which the handle is a separate, detachable component for a more seamless finish. Another unique feature of the Spartherm inserts range is the exclusive S-Thermatik NEO app for smartphones and tablets.
77
When combined with the fire’s operating system, the app enables the user to remotely control the air flow in the fire and the temperature in the home using a simple graphic display. Other features of the range include an air wash system to keep the glass clean, a soft-close concealed doorlocking mechanism, a user-friendly air slide and a simple hinged ash tray. The new Spartherm inserts brochure will be available in both printed and interactive digital versions, along with informative videos to use in dealer showrooms. In addition, selected Spartherm wood stoves and fires will be displayed on the DRU stand C35 at Hearth & Home, the UK’s premier fireplace trade show in Harrogate, 9 – 11 June 2019. For further information, visit www.drufire.com
Rinnai Hot Water Infinity 1600 Low–Nox Units & Systems Making Economic Sense For Commercial & Domestic Sites
Rinnai, the UK’s leading manufacturer of the ErP A-rated Infinity range of continuous flow condensing gas fired water heaters, delivers the most energy efficient range of low-NOx hot water heating units currently available to the UK end user. The company’s low-NOx Infinity HDC 1600e external wall mounted unit (together with the interior HDC 1600i version) utilises Rinnai’s patented pre-mix burner technology with a 14-1 turn down ratio – the largest on the market – of 58.4kw-4.05kw and is extremely quiet in operation. Integral controls on the units enable the water heater to achieve high efficiencies whether locally or integrated into a building
management system. In reducing Legionella proliferation, Rinnai has developed additional ‘SMART’ controls for secondary return DHW systems in the form of an advanced temperature control system which allows for safe running of water at 42°C core temperature during the day and 60°C when a building is closed. By the time the building reopens, core temperature is 42°C for safe use. Another Rinnai innovation addresses an age-old industry problem with hot water delivery - lime scale buildup. The company’s integrated scale control system is an innovative solution and comes in the form of an LC (lime check) code on the display of the controller.
78
The system helps to ensure the performance and efficiency of Rinnai’s 1600, and, all of its continuous flow water heaters installed in hard water areas. Almost all water-fed appliances, including plate heat exchangers, boilers and water heaters will, over time accumulate scale deposits in hard water areas. Ultimately, ongoing use with hard water may shorten the lifespan of conventional water heating appliances and systems. To safeguard against this Rinnai units continually self-monitor for lime scale deposits around the heat exchanger. If a lime scale build-up is identified, a message is sent to the built-in interface panel on the front of the appliance. The message is displayed as ‘LC’, which
alerts the end user to contact a Rinnai service agent to perform a lime scale flush to clear the potentially harmful deposits. This avoids and eliminates the adverse effects associated with lime scale build up, including lower energy efficiencies and potential product de-generation. The industry uptake on Rinnai’s series of low-NOx high efficiency products is that continuous flow heater systems are proven to be more energy efficient than conventional storage systems and are increasingly
the experts’ preferred method of hot water provision. Rinnai units easily cater for any size projects that need high volumes of water at intermittent times of day. The Rinnai Infinity 1600e/i offers condensing technology with up to 107% gross efficiency, ultra-lowNOx of less than 20 ppm, a widely expansive modulation range of 54kW4kW and high flow rates of 37/ltr/min. Add to these benefits are the peace of mind of an extended warranty, a top A-rating exceeding the demands 79
of eco-labelling legislation, the flexibility of external wall mounting and delivery to site with all relevant accessories and the knowledge that the HDC1600 is future-proofed against future regulatory and legislative changes. For more information on the RINNAI product range visit www.rinnaiuk.com
The Future of Home Heating by Warmup If you’re building your dream home or helping a client’s dreams come true, consider installing a contemporary underfloor heating solution that enhances your design, brings unrivalled comfort and increases the energy-efficiency of the project. Warmup are the world’s best-selling underfloor heating brand and their range of electric and hydronic systems offer radiant warmth for homes of all styles and sizes. The World’s Best-Selling Underfloor Heating Brand Now celebrating their 25th year of bringing warmth to millions of people across the world, Warmup’s heating systems are trusted for their highquality design, ease of installation and market-leading warranties. Underfloor heating is a cleaner, more efficient way to heat a home and is suitable for installing in both new-build and renovation projects. Floor heaters require less energy to reach optimal comfort temperatures than traditional heating systems and with this
This heated water produces radiant warmth which heats up a room to a consistent, comfortable temperature from the floor up; heating the objects in a room as opposed to central heating-based radiators which concentrate on heating the air of a room, thereby often creating a ‘stuffy’ environment. increased energy-efficiency, you can expect lower long-term running costs. The ‘invisible’ nature of underfloor heating also allows complete freedom when designing your home, with no style interruptions caused by bulky radiators and exposed piping. Hydronic Underfloor Heating Hydronic Underfloor Heating, also known as Wet or Water Underfloor Heating, is a heating system that pumps heated water from a combination boiler or other heating source, such as ground and air source heat pumps, through pipes within the floor construction.
80
Warmup’s Clypso System is an ideal hydronic floor heater for off-plan developments and home extension projects. It has been designed specifically for installation within floating screeded floors and as it is fitted directly into the screed, it has little impact on the depth of the floor construction. The Clypso System features a strong and flexible heating pipe which is clipped into position on top of a layer of unique insulation panels. Insulation is key to maximising the energy-efficiency of any heating system and the Clypso Insulation dramatically reduces heat-loss and helps distributes warmth throughout the room quickly and evenly.
Hydronic systems, like our Total 16, typically have a greater system depth than electric systems, so are ideal for new-build projects where the dimensions of the systems can be taken into account during the architectural design stages. If you’re looking for a more low-profile floor heating solution, a Warmup electric floor heater may be more suitable, such as our StickyMat.
Heat pumps are often inefficient when used to power a central heating system as the levels of heat required are often higher than a heat pump can produce; a hydronic underfloor heating system requires a lower temperature to operate than central heating systems, therefore making them perfect for use with heat pumps.
Easy Installation and Compatible with Heat Pumps
To enhance the energy-efficiency of a floor heater, a system-dedicated Smart heating controller is recommended for a truly personalised heating solution whilst helping you avoid energy wastage.
The Clypso System offers a quick and hassle-free installation by a qualified installer of floor heating systems. Its insulation panels utilise a gridwork design to offer clear guidance for the best heating pipe layout and, like all of Warmup’s heaters, the Clypso System is covered by extensive warranties including the SafetyNet Guarantee which protects against accidental damage during installation, for true peace of mind. Hydronic underfloor heaters are suitable for use with a ground source or air source heat pump. Heat pumps are a more sustainable way to heat a home, capturing natural heat from the ground or air and using this to gently warm the water within a hydronic system.
81
An Energy-Efficient Heating Solution
Warmup’s 4iE Smart WiFi Thermostat can learn your habits, making sure your home is always at the right temperature, at the right time for you and utilises smartphone-based technology such as the MyHeating app to facilitate advanced features such as remote access and automatic heating. Js Air Curtains New Product Catalogue
Warm Welcome At The National Army Museum
Omnie Ufh Warms Traditional Style Cotswold Stone Homes
JS Air Curtains has released an updated product catalogue including over 450 units and customisation features set to inspire architects into making a design feature of their entrance’s air barrier system.
JS Air Curtains has supplied two Zen air curtains for the recently refurbished National Army Museum in Chelsea, London, to provide a warm welcome to visitors in its reception foyer and gift shop.
Kerry Jones, UK and Ireland Sales Manager at JS Air Curtains comments, “This new catalogue marks a further expansion of the JS Air Curtains range and a focus by the industry on energy saving technology. More advanced control options and efficient fans make a product designed to reduce a building’s energy consumption, even more energy conserving. Details of run-cost analysis alongside all the product selection information, continues to make the JS Air Curtains catalogue the “go-to” resource for air curtain specifiers and buyers.”
The air curtains seal the entrances while the doors are open with an invisible barrier of air, preventing cold air entering in the winter and cool air escaping in the summer. The Zen air curtain was selected to architecturally fit in with the design of the interior and, in the case of the foyer, match the colour of the doorway.
A development of six new five-bedroom detached properties, close to Cirencester town centre, whose construction features the area’s distinctive natural Cotswold Limestone, is making full use of the benefits to the ClipPlate system and other products form the range of OMNIE Limited.
The catalogue is available as a PDF download, an online flip catalogue or can be requested as hard copy from www.jsaircurtains.com/catalogue or alternativley www.jsaircurtains.com
Mike O’Connor, Deputy Director at the National Army Museum said ‘‘The air curtains blend in perfectly, due to matching the RAL colour of the entrance, and are helping to maintain a very comfortable internal temperature for visitors and staff to the museum. They have been running very well so far with no operational issues’’.

The Loft Lid downlight cover eliminates heat loss and air leakage into the loft space. It creates an air tight seal around downlights and allows a continuous layer of insulation to be safely laid over the top to comply with current building regulations. The Loft Lid is designed and manufactured in the UK and has been tested to EN60695 and EN60598 by the UK Lighting Industry Association. www.loftleg.com
Alternative insulation materials – polyurethane foam for better insulation Polyurethane foam can be used as a high performing insulant for all types of new build or refurbishment project to meet or exceed today’s standards. It is also widely used by architects and specifiers for remodelling purposes, for instance in barn conversions. When used for airtightness or stabilisation under the roof or within the cavity it outperforms most other materials.
It is particularly cost-effective and easy to apply to a wide variety of substrates. Its closed-cell nature renders it very resistant to moisture ingress and grades are available which achieve both Class 1 and Class 0 fire ratings when tested to BS 476 Part 7 and 6 respectively. The urethane foam can be applied in any thickness to suit the insulation requirements of the building.
The sprayed or injected foam is not just an insulant – it can be used for stabilisation purposes, for instance to hold tiles in place for a stronger roof structure or to take the place of failing cavity wall ties. The material can often be used when other materials are simply not suitable. The material is so versatile that it can be used in many different situations from buildings to boats!
The trade association for the sprayed and injected polyurethane foam industry is the British Urethane Foam Contractors Association. BUFCA is a central resource for the application of polyurethane foam systems. The association consists of polyurethane foam installers operating to high standards, together with material and equipment suppliers.
The polyurethane insulant is a twocomponent liquid system which produces a highly-efficient blanket of insulation with an exceptional thermal conductivity figure.
Polyurethane foam can be installed to help meet Building Regulations as wall insulation, roof insulation, floor insulation or to fill voids and other areas providing a seamless,
85
thermal insulation barrier. Other jointed systems give rise to a potentially weak point, leading to a significant loss of insulation value. The foam also slows the deterioration of tile/slates by frost. On the underside of the covering frost damage is eliminated. On the weather side the frequency of the freezing/ thawing cycle is reduced. Slates and tiles will be less prone to damage by impact as the foam distributes the forces. When choosing a BUFCA registered installer, architects, builders, and specifiers can be assured of the highest standards of quality and service. www.bufca.co.uk.

Going Green: How to Bring the Outside Into Your Home Going green has never been so popular. More of us than ever are ditching plastics in our daily lives and choosing to enjoy the benefits of the great outdoors. And when it comes to interiors, the trend for 'bringing the outside in' is also on the rise. Bringing botanical elements and natural materials into a scheme blurs the lines between garden and home, delivering bursts of colour, texture and vibrancy.
work wonders to improve our mood and reduce stress levels. Greenery is thought to bring balance and harmony to a space, creating a calm and relaxed mood. When we surround ourselves with the beauty and tranquillity of nature, stresses disappear as we find comfort and reassurance in our natural environment.”
THE NATURAL TOUCH
House plants are all well and good, but what if you're somewhat lacking in the green-fingered department?! It's all too easy to forget to water plants, which is one of the reasons why sales of faux versions are booming. “Faux plants really are big news at the moment,” says Roselind. “There have been great improvements in quality, meaning that the best ones are now completely lifelike. They're also maintenance-free and safer for pets and people with allergies. It's easy to see why they're the ultimate way to add instant greenery!”
We all know that a walk in the countryside is the ultimate stress buster, but it's a somewhat tricky thing to achieve if you live in the middle of a busy city! So, what's the solution? Instead of taking yourself into nature; bring nature to you. “We're naturally drawn to the great outdoors. Being around nature can help us feel refreshed and reinvigorated,” says Roselind. “So bringing natural elements into the home such as plants, flowers, and even indoor trees and ferns, can
FAKE IT 'TIL YOU MAKE IT
90
In Roselind Wilson Design's Eaton Mews North project, the team created an incredible faux living wall in the basement kitchen. Troughs of fake foliage were attached to the wall to create a sea of green which was then covered with a large glass screen. “The result is a dynamic and vibrant backdrop to the dining area which will never go out of style,” says Roselind. “The faux green wall alludes to the idea of outside space, but also creates a sense that the room extends beyond its own boundaries.” Another way to effectively add faux greenery is to follow the 'Rule of three' principle as Roselind illustrates in her Holland Park project. Three bright green faux bushes have been placed at regular intervals along the dining table, creating a pleasing symmetry and a link to the hedges in the window boxes outside the property. “The 'rule of three' is a design principle that uses groupings of three, or layerings in odd numbers, to create an effect which is pleasing to the eye,” says Roselind. “This approach can be applied to all kinds of elements such as accessories, artwork and furniture. The owners of this period property wanted a simple, pared-down design scheme. The dining room was left white to maximise the light and space, with fresh bursts of greenery to reflect the hedging outside.”
91
BRILLIANT BOTANICALS “Botanical prints are a great way to bring the outside in, and they also add a softening effect to interior schemes,” says Roselind. “In the girl's bedroom in our Richmond project, we wanted to create a bedroom fit for a princess with a soft palette of duck egg blues and lavenders. For the blind we chose a floral fabric with an intricate pattern and rich tones which provides a striking contrast to the geometric rug.” The guest bedroom of this same house also features botanical patterns, this time a dark red floral pattern for the blind which acts as an accent within the calm, understated scheme. “Here, we wanted to create some rustic charm by using different floral fabrics paired with bold stripes and rich textures for a comfortable yet elegant style,” explains Roselind. “We kept the design and furniture simple to prevent the scheme from looking dated, and instead created a modern-rustic feel using pattern, layering and texture.”
3 TOP TIPS FOR BRINGING THE OUTSIDE IN 1) Add greenery “One of the easiest ways to bring the outside in is to add greenery,” says Roselind Wilson. “However, make sure you take the proportions of the space into account. If you have small rooms, consider hanging plants. And if you're using a large plant, only include one; whereas for smaller plants, group them together in odd numbers to create a stylish look.” 2) Choose floral patterns Another great way to inject a burst of nature into your home is to incorporate floral patterns, whether for wall coverings, window treatments or upholstery. “Keep in mind that contrasting patterns and sizes will keep things fresh, while too many matching florals will look busy and outdated,” advises Roselind. “Offsetting floral patterns with layers 92
of texture and colour will provide balance and prevent your room from looking overcrowded.” 3) Use natural materials “Add rustic charm by incorporating natural textures such as wicker, rattan and jute into your scheme,” says Roselind. “Also consider using eco-friendly materials. Whether it's bedding or paint, there is always an eco-friendly option that will have long-term benefits for the planet. For example, linen is more ecologically sound than cotton because it requires significantly less water during processing.” 9 Lonsdale Road | London | NW6 6RA

Pantone Colour of the Year 2019 Living Coral Spotted on fashion runways, social media, and even smartphones, coral is set to shine even brighter in 2019. Crowned as Pantone’s latest It colour, Living Coral is already making moves in the interior design world, emerging as a cheerful and versatile hue that adds personality to all parts of the home. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, shares 3 ways to introduce this vivacious colour to interiors. 1. Highlight it with decorative elements and accents Living Coral radiates positivity and warmth, making it an expressive shade even in small doses. “Living Coral easily delivers a graphic pop to a space,” says Rebecca. “Introducing it through small elements will brighten up a room, creating a sense of cosiness that’s also fresh and chic.” “Soften Living Coral’s energetic tone with cushions, throws and rugs for an inviting feel in the living room. The dining area can also benefit from this peachy hue. Elements like colour blocked plates and coasters perk up a table arrangement, and set the mood for dinner parties.” 2. Make a statement with coral furniture Living Coral’s cheerful vibe can also be applied on a larger scale around the home. “This bubbly hue’s warm, nurturing qualities translate well to furniture, adding a bold and lively presence,” Rebecca advises.
“For a boost of productivity and colour, pop Living Coral into the home office. A coral chair instantly revitalizes the space with its warm, golden undertones – it also makes for a fun, inexpensive DIY project.”
“A coral-themed sofa plays up its positive, sunny vibes to incredible effect, and it can be paired with soft neutrals for an elegant space, or amped up for an all-out tropical aesthetic. Dining chairs are also a great fit for this peachy colour, lending a cheerful, engaging vibe to the space.”
3. Create contrast with colour blocking Colour blocking is another chic way to introduce Living Coral to the home. Often seen as a Spring/Summer trend, matching this warm shade with other colours creates a striking contrast - a great way to tackle the winter blues. 96
“The best approach to play with this colour block trend is by taking it to the walls,” Rebecca says. “Living Coral can be paired with unexpected shades like mint for a fresh and on-trend aesthetic, or greys and blush tones for a softer statement look. “This adds a natural, welcoming feel to a space while also showcasing the vivid, chromatic qualities of this dazzling, joyful colour.”

Patio preparation: how to design your summer garden ahead of the warmer months Many home gardens feature patio areas adjacent to the house, providing a perfect area for socialising with friends on a warm summers’ night, keeping an eye on children whilst they are playing, and as the go to spot for alfresco dining.
The stylish design of bi-fold doors provides seamless progression from the inside to the outside; opening the doors fully on a warm day is the perfect way to welcome in the summers breeze, allowing the occupants to enjoy the sun.
With warmer times around the corner, here’s how homeowners can design their summer garden now, ready to enjoy for summer.
There are numerous other benefits to installing bi-fold doors in a property such as boosting natural daylight and increasing the property’s value.
Summer garden must haves
The installation of bi-fold doors gives the feel of an additional room in the house.
Bi-fold doors Bi-fold doors are massively increasing in popularity, such as those from Quickslide Windows & Doors. Their aesthetically pleasing design has seen them become a must have feature in both modern and traditional homes alike.
When planning their positioning, it is ideal to have a patio immediately outside, as this creates a sociable space to relax on an evening or to fire up a mid-summer’s day BBQ.
98
Patio area To get the most from a garden, a patio area is a must-have! As mentioned above, if bi-fold doors are already in place or scheduled to be installed, it is recommended that the patio sits immediately outside of the widespanning doors. In order to create the perfect patio area, preparation is key. Ahead of any thoughts around lighting and outside furniture, a jet or power wash is recommended to remove any build-up of mud and dirt that has accumulated over the winter months and to leave the area looking sparkly clean. After which, necessary repairs, such as resealing the flagstones, can be made. One the area is prepped, the fun of designing a functional and fashionable area can begin! Getting the lighting right is important to ensure the space can be enjoyed come day or night. There are two types of lighting to consider; functional and detail / mood lighting.
If the area is to be used as a functional and fun space for socialising, the lighting needs to illuminate the whole area, rather than being for decorative purposes; wall lights, spot lights or solar lights should do the trick. Once the functional lighting has been decided on, mood lighting, such as dainty fairy lights or large decorative floor lanterns can be added to create a magical feel! To maximise the time in which the outside area can be used, heaters come in handy for the cooler spring and summer evenings. Gas and electric heaters have been popular for years, but for a quirkier heating solution, fire pits give the air of a cosier feel, and their stylish look means they will quickly become a focal point in the garden, too! Other additions worth considering include good seating; whether that be a round a table for dining or comfy garden sofas for relaxing. Flowers Flowers are a great addition to brighten up any garden area, to ultimately make it more aesthetically pleasing. To tie the garden and patio areas together, beautiful in-season flowers can be introduced throughout.
For planting in the garden beds, flowers such as cosmos, zinnia and dwarf sunflowers work well to provide an array of bright colours. Potted plants are a brilliant way to fill in gaps, both in the garden beds and around the patio; white dwarf lilies make for stunning potted plants and work well with any colour scheme. Hanging baskets are excellent for injecting colour; co-ordinate them with the flowers that line the garden beds or choose conflicting colours to make a statement.
99
Hanging baskets will draw the eye upwards and the eye-catching florals, cape daisies and petunias are popular to use in baskets. To ensure the flowers are in full bloom for all to enjoy come the summer months, it’s a good idea to get ahead of the game and begin planting during spring! Although hot summer days and warm breezy evenings may seem a long way off, the reality is, they’re just around the corner! For those wanting to be ready to enjoy a carefully planned and well-groomed garden at the first sign of summer, it’s wise to begin the preparation now.
Bringing the home into the garden
The owners of this large family home asked us to take their indoor spaces outside, and add a 5-tonne swimming pool to the garden. Our proposal satisfied the Blackheath Park Conservation area’s stringent regulations, while being sensitive to protected tree zones and concerned neighbours.
Working with the existing configuration of the house and through sympathetic landscaping, areas have been created for eating, exercising and relaxing. Designs extend the light well to include a changing area and shower. A covered dining area is placed adjacent to the kitchen for easy serving. 100
Existing trees and additional plantings offer dappled shade and screening from neighbours. And areas around the pool provide sheltered spots to enjoy the sun.

Seamless surfacing for pathways at Battersea Park Over 800m² of Addagrips Terrabase Classic Resin Bound porous surfacing was installed to rejuvenate the pathways in Battersea Park on the banks of the River Thames, London. Addagrip was contacted by the client Barhale Ltd regarding the resurfacing of existing pathways in the Grade II listed, 200-acre urban green space in the London Borough of Wandsworth. The requirement was for overlay of existing pedestrian walkways with a smooth, low maintenance, seamless finish in a colour similar to adjacent paths. A special blend of aggregates was required which Addagrip named ‘Battersea’. The natural stone that helped create this bespoke resin bound colour was supplied by Long Rake Spar and was installed with their Terrabase system as a Terrabase Classic paving. Long Rake have a large offering of specialist dried aggregate granules that are perfect for use in resin bound paving.
The initial phase of the pathway resurfacing was carried out in June 2018 by Addagrip approved contractor Total Protection Ltd who installed a total of 450m2 of the Terrabase Classic. A further 430m2 of the resin bound surfacing was installed in a different area of the park by Addagrip approved contractor O'Hara Bros Surfacing Ltd in September 2018. The finished surface offers a practical, porous paving option suitable for all weather access to this busy park and the bespoke colour blend provides a great match to the adjacent surfacing. Long Rake Spar are always delighted to hear that their stone has been used in prestigious projects such as this. They pride themselves on supplying high quality aggregates which has been reflected in their recent ISO 9001: 2015 accreditation. Achieving this certification is a testament to Long Rake’s determination to put quality management at the heart of their customer service commitment. 102
The ISO 9001: 2015 certification is for the wholesale of decorative aggregates and encompasses all three product ranges, Natural Selection, Grantex and Sight GRIP. This quality management system ensures consistency of both their products and service levels and displays their commitment to achieving the highest levels of customer service. Chris Bourne Sales Director stated “We are continually striving to improve to ensure our customers receive the very best service from us. Therefore we were delighted to achieve the ISO 9001: 2015 as this demonstrates our ability to consistently provide products and services that meet the highest customer and regulatory requirements.” www.longrakespar.co.uk

Lancaster Architects Launches Sustainable Eco-Pods The popularity of holidaying and weekending in the UK is firmly on the rise, with glamping at the forefront of the ‘staycation’ revolution. Lancaster-based Harrison Pitt Architects’ versatile approach and innovative eye for quality development, is proving perfectly placed to support businesses capitalizing on 2019, dubbed the year of ‘exponential growth’ in the luxury staycation market. Working in partnership with specialist timber home manufacturer JT Construction, the multiple award winning architects have launched ‘PlusPods’. These luxury modular structures can be linked in various combinations to create bespoke, adaptable accommodation for different uses. Certainly not limited to luxurious glamping, PlusPods have already generated requests for bespoke modules across the sector. Applications include holiday cottages, garden rooms for hotels and pubs, home offices, shared amenity areas on camping sites, even low-impact small residences and accommodation for TV and film sets.
Designing for long term sustainability, the team construct and insulate each pod to the highest industry standards which meet the newbuild house energy efficiency criteria, rather than the lower minimum, required for caravans, garden rooms and glamping pods. Solar panels and a log-burner or pellet stove can all be designed in too. Sustainably sourced larch for the walls allows sympathetic blending with urban or rural surroundings. They can also be delivered with a sedum roof for use in sensitive environments like National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs). 2018’s long hot summer only increased enthusiasm for ‘staycationing’, and with the glamping sector growing 11% year on year, ‘comfortable camping’ is offering a sound investment. Richard Wooldridge, director at Harrison Pitt, said; “I had the idea for PlusPods while on a family glamping holiday. I realised that a highly insulated glamping pod would be able to lengthen the tourism season by providing comfortable accommodation 104
throughout the colder months; and would also make the PlusPod more cost effective and greener to run.” Celebrating 40 years at the forefront of innovation and design, and with a dedicated hotels and leisure team offering planning consultancy, project management and sustainability consultancy, Harrison Pitt are already taking 2019 by storm. Determined to challenge existing market leaders’ typically lower thermal standard glamping pods, the competitively priced and sustainable PlusPods look set to become an attractive and desirable fixture in the landscape, whatever the forecast.

After selecting the LED, select the driver, either switched, triac, DALI, 1-10v, DMX, 12v or 24v, the choice is yours. Typical applications are washing light round cornices, coffering, roof light wells,
light panelling, beam edges, skirtings and wall recesses. When switched off the edge trim blends into the interior almost unnoticeable. When on, the room is washed with soft reflected light, the perfect way to illuminate a room and to avoid the error of too many down lights.

Dura Composites Responds to Market Demand With New Class B Fire Rated Composite Timber Cladding that Delivers on Style and Safety Dura Composites, a leading supplier of composite products for flooring and facades, has bolstered the self-build, renovation and new-build residential market with the launch of new Dura Cladding Resist. Dura Cladding Resist is the UK’s first co-extruded composite timber cladding with a Class B fire rating that’s tested in accordance with genuine install methodology from a UKAS approved laboratory and offers superior performance over traditional residential cladding materials. Available in six wood-look colours to suit every style of home, Dura Cladding has a unique armoured layer to help protect the core of the plank from the elements ensuring the cladding always looks like new.
Dura Composites’ FSC® 100% chain of custody certification means that the wood content comes from wellmanaged forests, and up to 78% of the materials used are recycled hardwood and plastic too. Dura Cladding Resist offers considerable advantages to architects, contractors, self-builders and end-users versus traditional wood, fibre cement or PVC cladding, including: •
No need to ever paint, seal or treat the cladding
•
Simple installation using standard tools
•
Rot, splinter and warp resistant
•
15 year warranty
•
UV Colour stability
•
Full range of slimline colour matched aluminium trims
•
Available as FSC® Certified 106
Current guidance regarding dwelling houses and other buildings below 18 metres require a minimum classification of Class B-s3, d2. Dura Cladding Resist has successfully achieved the superior classification of B-s2, d0 – in recognition of its lower smoke volume and the absence of droplet production in the event of a fire. These attributes, combined with its limited contribution to flame spread mean that should the building be under attack from fire, firefighters’ visibility would be less impeded, leaving them able to expediently deal with extinguishing the fire. In addition, the unique composition of Dura Cladding also prevents spontaneous re-ignition when the source of the flame is removed – further enhancing its safety properties.
“We’re really excited to be launching Dura Cladding Resist” said Stuart Burns, Dura Composites’ Managing Director. “As well as enhancing its looks, the right cladding can also help to insulate a building and protect it from the elements. The UV fade and fire resistant outer armour, paired with the beautiful composite timber woodgrain surface gives a finish unlike anything else in the construction market and offers an environmentally friendly alternative to the health issues now associated with our competitors’ fibre cement cladding products. What’s more, with our easy fit colourmatched aluminium trims and aluminium battens, you’re buying a complete system from a single source, and which offers huge labour and maintenance savings over other materials.” Dura Composites’ new slimline powder coated aluminium trims and aluminium battening can be utilised as a full system which offers enhanced performance versus wood battening.
Our free Technical Installation Manual helps installers ensure that they can easily follow best practice with minimum effort, ensuring sufficient airflow between the external finish and the main structural frame of the building so any moisture is easily evaporated away. The 3660mm length cladding planks have a 180mm profile with a 150mm face and are designed to be installed in a “Weatherboard” style which overlaps at the horizontal joins to encourage water run-off and which creates a contemporary styling. Free samples are available to order now from the Dura Composites website at www.duracomposites.com/cladding and from the company’s exclusive UK distribution partner International Timber. “International Timber are delighted to offer the Dura Cladding Resist range and its obvious advantages of a Euro Class B Fire Rating to our customers”; says John Dowd, Specialised Product Category Director at International Timber.
107
The cladding market has been in need of an aesthetically attractive product which delivers on the demands of fire safety regulations and which is low maintenance, and Dura Cladding Resist will be the answer for a wide range of our customer base. As the sole UK distributor of this product we have a team of Product Champions based at each of our depots ready to offer expertise and quotations and we look forward to supplying Dura Cladding Resist range to customers in all UK regions.”

Abandoned hospital given luxurious lease of life A former 19th century hospital in Stafford has been restored to become a collection of luxurious apartments. Previously “St George’s County Asylum”, the grade II listed building on Cooperation Street opened in 1818 and housed 1,000 patients before finally closing in 1995. Following 20 years of neglect, the building was in disrepair with crumbling floors and walls, until work started in 2015. The building has now been transformed by Shropshire Homes, into a collection of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and renamed St George’s Mansions.
The technical team at Russell Roof Tiles has spent many years creating an authentic collection of roof tiles which replicate original tiles, but with all the properties that you would expect from modern materials.
The house builder was keen to preserve the history of the hospital and maintain the Georgian architecture. To ensure this, they worked closely with leading roof tile manufacturer Russell Roof Tiles, who has extensive experience in restoration projects and pitched roofing.
Russell Roof Tiles is a leading independent roof tile manufacturer providing products for leading UK house builders and high-profile social housing and commercial projects, where sustainability and eco-credentials are the utmost priority.
The manufacturer supplied 20,000 of its Lothian tiles in Slate Grey to re-roof the building. The modern material replicated the look of the building’s original natural slate tiles, whilst providing the sustainable benefits of concrete.

The Lothian tiles form part of Russell Roof Tiles’ Natural Range - an expanding selection of thinner leading edge interlocking concrete tiles. When laid, the tile gives the appearance of a small format tile with the commercial benefit of a larger format tile.
