Structural Insulated Panels

Why SIPs are crucial to the future of the UK construction industry Introduction Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are engineered panels used to construct walls, ceilings, and floors. Either as a material for Modern Methods of Construction, such as offsite manufacturing, or as a replacement for traditional construction materials such as framing lumber and insulation, SIPs

provide an extremely durable, strong, and energy-efficient building option. In this document, we explain why SIPs are so relevant and crucial to building new homes and industrial and commercial premises. The benefits cover their cost-effectiveness, speed of build, safety, durability, flexibility, energy-efficiency and ability to improve overall build quality. 6

Structural Insulated Panels

SIPs: the UK context The urgent need for alternative building materials The UK construction industry is in a state of transition. New housing stock is needed urgently; particularly affordable homes. Successive governments have similarly failed to live up to targets pledged. The need for more commercial and industrial building is also well-publicised. Yet the construction industry has been failing to meet these needs, due to a combination of factors. A chronic shortage of skilled labour, the unpredictability of British weather, and arguably the biggest factor – an unwillingness to change.

Now, however, the changes are beginning, and architects, developers and contractors are all considering how to adopt Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee report Off-site manufacture for construction recommends a presumption in favour of MMC when granting planning permission for new developments. Widespread use of SIPs throughout the world MMC requires not only new methodologies, but also different materials. Whilst SIPs are not new (they were first developed in the 1950’s and 60’s), growth in their use in construction in the UK follows widespread usage and predicted growth throughout the world, and is to be welcomed for a variety of reasons. Let us now consider the benefits of SIPs in greater detail, each of which together demonstrates the significant 7

contribution SIPs can make in the future of UK construction.

Flexibility in Building Design Designed and custom-built Those unfamiliar with new building technologies tend to confuse SIPs buildings, with last century’s rather ugly, prefabricated constructions. SIPs enable the creation of buildings where design possibilities are almost endless. Complicated shapes can be produced economically using SIPs. Each building can be uniquely designed and custombuilt to architect or designer-provided specifications. The unique design flexibility of SIPs enables town-planners, along with their architects to create buildings to complement local styles, needs, and trends.

Structural Insulated Panels Economic advantages across the project A shell constructed from SIPs is erected much faster and, therefore, more economically than a conventional shell. They enable builders to complete their part of the building project quickly and to provide a safe, weather-protected environment for other trades to carry out their work. And not being weather-dependent, the project is much easier to plan and complete, which also reduces cost and uncertainty. Unbeatable insulation values Insulation values for SIPs are vastly superior to conventional framing and insulating methods, as a building constructed with these panels is virtually airtight. Occupants have excellent control over the interior environment without the problem of draughts and irregularities in air temperature. To be precise: In a building constructed with SIPs there are none of the hot and cold spots found in homes built with conventional building materials.

Precision and accuracy using CAD drafting systems

The super-eco building benefits

CAD drafting systems help to detail the SIP fabrication process, allowing precise cutting instructions to be sent to the SIP manufacturers (such as Hemsec) or engineers for foam, relief and spline set up. With the help of technological design systems the architect optimise the use of materials in all areas of the building.

The ultimate environmentallyfriendly product

A key advantage of using SIPs in design is that there is no requirement for trusses in finished roof spaces. As an example, a SIPs building provides spacious room-in-roof attic rooms which increases total floor space by up to 25% in any project. Clearly, added floor space is desirable and adds to the value of the property.

One of the major qualities of SIPs is that they are an environmentally-friendly resource. Their facings are made from renewable, farm-grown trees. This means that these components do not contribute to environmental degradation, making them an obvious choice for construction companies that care for the future of our planet.

Planning a project with Hemsec SIPs in mind, before entering into the design phase, can lead to improved efficiencies during the process and eliminate unnecessary changes during later stages. 8

As well as reducing the cost to the occupant of heating fuels, a key advantage of using SIPs in the construction of homes is that they produce far less waste than buildings constructed from conventional materials as there is a reduction in harmful gases released from burning waste as well as a reduction in the need for landfill space. Excellent sound resistance As with timber studwork, acoustic performance using SIPs is determined by the mass and continuity of the plasterboard linings. Acoustic rated plasterboards are used to improve the insulation performance of walls where required.

Structural Insulated Panels

Repair and Maintenance of SIPs As with any construction method, the long-term performance of the building will be largely dependent on repair and maintenance as necessary. It is important to: • Regularly check and clean guttering and rainwater down pipes. This ensures that water runoff is collected and diverted away from the building. • Flashings around the roof should be checked and repaired or replaced as required. • If the building is clad in render, any cracks or damage to the render should be repaired promptly. To be expected, the external build up is likely to wear out well in advance of a main SIPs structure. Because of the longevity and durability of SIPs, the strength of SIPs buildings are proving legendary around the globe. They can withstand hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes. Provided the installation remains weather-tight and all maintenance is carried out properly, a life of at least 60 years may be expected for SIPs buildings.

Building quality Snagging could be a thing of the past for builders and contractors who use SIPs Resistance to airborne sound: Hemsec test data indicates that separating walls, with additional plasterboard and soundproof linings will provide excellent sound resistance.

Longevity of Finished Buildings Before a SIPs building is constructed on-site, it is important that its component parts are packaged correctly and are transported and stored safely.

Handling SIPs During construction, the SIP structure is likely to be exposed to poor weather conditions and may become wet. When general precautions are followed this is not an issue for SIPs. If any panels do get wet, it is important to ensure that they are allowed to dry thoroughly. Panels should not be tightly wrapped in plastic, but loosely covered to promote the movement of air and drying.

9

99% of home owners report snags and defects…. When we consider that in the 2019 Customer Satisfaction Survey by the NHBC shows that 99% of customers reported snags and defects in their home to their builders after moving in, quality is a big issue in the UK construction industry. 70% of those surveyed reported between six and fifteen problems, and more than a quarter of them (26%) reported more than 16 problems.

Structural Insulated Panels

Straighter and flatter walls – a key benefit Not only are SIPs buildings faster and easier to erect than conventionally constructed buildings, but they also have straighter and flatter walls. Industrially manufactured, SIPs are not subject to the inconsistencies of manmade construction. This means that interior and exterior walls which are made of SIPs, are straighter and flatter than hand-built, rendered walls. This unique aspect reduces the requirement for onsite adjustments – which means little or no snagging. Resistance to damage Using SIPs to construct the exterior envelope of the building creates an extremely tough, durable barrier to the elements for the protection and comfort of the building’s occupants. SIPs buildings are capable of resisting hurricanes and tornados in storm-prone areas of the world.

Rigorous testing and products which meet the highest levels of compliance A technically superior product SIPs are manufactured to the very highest standards and technically superior when compared with all other building materials. This statement is proven in a number of ways. ETA and CE Mark Certification All Hemsec SIPs have ETA accreditation and CE Mark Certification. This is a guarantee to any construction-related company in the UK and Europe that

In Kobe, Japan in 1993, an earthquake devastated a large area of the city, but houses built with SIPs came through it virtually unscathed.

10

Hemsec’s products have been tested to the very highest levels. SIPs are extensively tested for Structural, Acoustic and Thermal properties, including Fire Resistance. The results of these tests are verified by the Eurocodes. The CE Mark Certification process classifies SIPs as a System 1 product ensuring that during audits there is a strong focus on Factory Process Control (FPC) processes. Hemsec is BS EN ISO 9001:2015 certified, quantifying our quality management system and demonstrating our ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.

Structural Insulated Panels Mechanical resistance and stability SIPs provide unbeatable strength, mechanical resistance and stability; they are strong, reliable, durable and suitable for all walls, roofs and floors in domestic, industrial and commercial construction. Assessing mechanical resistance and stability Hemsec adheres to the European Technical Assessment (ETA) document, specifying precisely the rigorous tests followed as part of the Factory Production Control (FPC) process. SIPs panels are manufactured by sandwiching together a core of rigid closed-cell polyurethane foam (PUR) insulation bonded to the two OSB skins. This bonding makes them intrinsically strong, air and water-tight. The six elements to verify mechanical resistance and stability are:1. Horizontal load capacity for walls SIPs are composited structurally insulated panels, pre-engineered and carefully designed to withstand vertical and horizontal loads. The load bearing ability of SIPs derives from the strong, structural bond between the three layers. 2. Vertical load capacity for walls (with or without eccentricity)

Under the Eurocodes our industryleading panels generally provide a vertical loading capacity of 80kN/m. 3. Combined vertical/horizontal load capacity Although SIPs are relatively light, they have the ability to bear high loads as a result of the strong structural bond between the layers. The load supported by SIPs is conveyed to the ground by the OSB skins, with the structure held in position by the fully bonded insulation core. SIPs can therefore bear considerable vertical and horizontal loads with reduced internal studding. 4. Racking load capacity for 150mm thick walls: SIPs provide a stable racking resistance for modular buildings and can reduce the overall frame of the module. In addition, by using SIPs it is possible to reduce some of the components of the frame (e.g. the amount of cross bracing) or sometimes remove the external frame of the module. Panels demonstrate racking resistance of 13.9 kN for an example panel height of 3 metres. This determination of the racking strength of walls constructed using SIPs is a measure of a building system’s ability to resist wind loads.

SIPs are fixed with either nails or screws. Both fixes provide sufficient strength although screws are stronger and recommended. 6. Roof structural capabilities SIPs are equally as strong and effective for use with roof systems. A SIPs 125mm panel thickness, a panel span of 3.0m and a roof slope of 60° has Panel Design Capacities of 5.04 k/N.

Conclusion SIPs are the ultimate solution for all types of construction projects, whether they are residential, industrial or commercial. We are proud to be one of the UK’s largest and longest-standing insulated panel manufacturers. We work in partnership across the supply chain; trusted by companies who need absolute confidence in the timely delivery of high quality, durable building materials. It can be an attractive solution to integrate SIPs with other materials in construction projects, whether as a load-bearing structure, for insulation, speed of construction etc. When we consider that SIPs are very easy to incorporate with a wide range of materials, such as CLT, it’s an important consideration when planning a project.

Cistermiser valves help to conserve water at Cambridge Assessment’s new HQ The washrooms in the prestigious new international headquarters of exams group Cambridge Assessment feature the latest infrared water management technology from Cistermiser. More than 1,600 Cambridgebased employees, formerly based in 11 Cambridge Assessment offices located across the city, have been brought together in the new HQ complex called The Triangle. The series of linked buildings, sited to the south east of the city centre, have been designed to provide enough office space to eventually accommodate up to 3,000 people by 2025.

Introducing the latest, ontrend product launch from Aqata, the DS402, a stylish reeded glass wet room panel. As the next big thing in bathroom design the reeded glass introduces a modern twist to the concept of a modesty screen; the clear glass lets the light into the showering area, whilst the slight blurring effect of the panels brings an element of decorum to the wet room. Colour and curves, industrial to new-deco, creating the perfect bathroom has become an interior designers dream.

96 Cistermiser Direct Flush ‘Discreet’ infrared urinal flush control valves (DFDs) have been installed in The Triangle’s 20 washrooms by M & E sub-contractor Allied Mechanical Services, the main contractor being construction company Bouygues. The Direct Flush automatically flushes the individual urinal after use, using as little as 0.5 litres of water each time. This ensures high levels of hygiene from the minimum volume of water.

The 10mm toughened glass panel has a smooth easy-to-clean internal showering surface and a reeded texture on the exterior.

Folding House Folding House is a private, bespoke new build house located in Ringwood completed by award winning Winchester based architects AR Design Studio. This site is bordered by mature trees and boasts stunning views of the surrounding landscape. A steep 18m slope down to the bank of the River Avon completes the aperture and provided the basis for AR Design Studio’s intervention. The design team’s vision called upon the natural topography in its response to the site. The house steps down the hill, with a folded ribbon connecting each floor and linking the entrance of the site down to the riverfront. Solid timber boxes were inserted in between this ribbon where private space were required, with the remaining space offering open plan living with a connection to the expansive balconies and stunning views beyond. The top floor of the house, being situated at entrance level, contains the majority of the open-plan living spaces, while the middle floor accommodates bedrooms. The lower ground floor provides guest accommodation and further living spaces connected to

the lower outside space to the rear. A central atrium and staircase offers connection between each floor, leading occupants from the front door at the top of the site down through the house and onto the garden. Each level of the building features outdoor terrace spaces to allow for outdoor living and a connection to the surrounding landscape. The internal finishes of each room are bright and clean, allowing light to

17

flood throughout the building while maintaining the view of the outdoors as the focal point of each space. Timber cladding runs through the building, softening the internal spaces and providing a relationship to the verdant surroundings. A light grey tile runs seamlessly between indoors and out, giving definition to the ribbon as it folds down the site.

House in the Landscape Niko Architect The metabolism of organic architecture. As a result of the inexpressive environment, the fundamental concept base was the integration of the building into an artificially created landscape and the inextricable connection of architecture with the open courtyard site structure. This is a dialogue with the natural order context. The project was created taking into account the

living moving space for human life as a creation and a component of this nature. It is a union of biological images, engineering and architecture. The architectural composition of the building develops from the outside to the inside .It is interconnected with the environment, being an organic architecture with a philosophy of 18

metabolism. Temporary and permanent components are clearly traced: the framework and the changing essence of the surrounding world organism, the biology of architecture, the unity of architectural and natural design. The visual structure as a natural extension is combined into a single form of interaction of opposites with

Architect Projects the futuristic base of architecture, which does not conflict with it. At the same time the functional zones are simultaneously distinguished and make up a single whole, blurring the boundaries between the external space and the interior. The composition of architecture is developing freely. The idea of functional expediency, based on the harmonious “adaptation” of the project to the conditions of its existence and purpose, prevails. The idea was implemented taking into account the limitations of visual contact from the external development of the village and the construction of a private zone with a formed terrace, landscape and adjacent body of water due to the enclosed volume of the building in the plan. Everything is balanced as in a living organism: the external space of the object is interwoven with the interior of the living room, bedroom and other rooms. The continuity of the mutual landscape flow into the building and the building into the landscape is enhanced by the green roof, on which a garden with woody and herbaceous plants and an artificial relief is organized. An additional connection with the outer space is organized due to roof lamps oriented to the movement of the sun and adding free air and a subtle play of black and white nuances to the interiors. Futuristic architecture as a natural extension of nature. The base interior solutions are the principle of the “home gallery” integration into the living space. The building frame is the backdrop for decor and art, sculptures, decorative elements with hidden Japanese themes, symbolic forms. Each piece of furniture is interpreted as an art work. The panoramic molded windows do not prevent the focus from the site on the “history” that occurs in the house and do not destroy a single architectural field, which includes the exterior-interior and landscape solutions. Art objects are also zone elements of residential and nonresidential spaces, and are the tracers of the movement direction.

A time where great experiences become the expectation, not the exception. And thanks to the democratisation of the internet and social media, for whatever space you find yourself in, you’ll find an online mirror of it. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It fosters competition and drives the creators and facilitators of these spaces to try harder and create positive experiences for the enduser. In every space within this experience economy, design and architecture must play their part in improving the experience. And the ceiling space is central to this ambition.

Futurebuild 2020:

Be the catalyst for change Recent climate change demonstrations and government declarations make one thing clear, we need to come together to take action against the climate change challenges we are facing. Against this backdrop, Futurebuild 2020, held from 03-05 March at ExCeL London will inspire industry professionals to come together, be the catalyst for change that’s needed and deliver a more sustainable built environment.

Setting the agenda The industry-leading conference programme returns for 2020, with the climate and ecological crisis leading conversations. Unmissable sessions in the Arena will include ‘Professional Collaboration: Do it together’ developed in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT). This session on day three (05 March) will bring the presidents of the institute together to discuss how those working 22

in the built and natural environment are currently responding to the climate and ecological emergency, and ongoing plans for the future. Another key session is: ‘The future is regenerative’ chaired by Peter Murray, Chair of New London Architecture (03 March). It will explore how design and construction needs a circular rethink. On day two (04 March) London Mayoral Candidate Rory Stewart will sit on a panel looking at ‘Carbon neutral cities of the future’ and examine the pathway to healthier, more resilient cities.

Futurebuild Show Preview While conference discussions will focus on the biggest issues facing the built environment at a macro level, the six Keynote Stages will look at the specific challenges impacting Buildings, Offsite, Energy, Interiors, Resourceful Materials and Critical Infrastructure. This programme of solution-driven sessions will share the latest thinking and research, to educate, inform and inspire visitors to make a positive change. The six Keynote Stages will address the following challenges: • Buildings: retrofitted, re-used, net positive and built to perform • Offsite: reliability and efficiency combined with creative placemaking • Interiors: sustainable and health promoting

Within the Buildings area at Futurebuild 2020, visitors will have the chance to explore and discuss the latest building technology, innovations and legislation. Showcases will cover everything from retrofit to re-use, to future plans for net-positive buildings. The 2020 Buildings section will feature two new showcase areas, the Whole House Retrofit Zone and the Digital Impact where visitors will be able to explore new refurb and retrofit solutions and the latest developments in digital construction. Connecting the whole event will be the Innovation Trail – a guided route where visitors will discover innovative products, solutions and materials and meet the leading thinkers behind them.

How bifold doors can elevate new build properties New build homes appeal to potential buyers for multiple reasons. They often don’t need the same upkeep as old homes, can be tailored to personal taste and have modern aesthetics. Installing bifold doors is a great addition to any property. However, they work particularly well in new builds as they add to and reflect the contemporary design. This alone can appeal to a potential buyer, but the benefits don’t stop there.

Bring in natural light Having lots of natural light in a home is a desirable aspect for many buyers. As well as providing many health advantages such as improving sleep, vision and mood. It can also completely change the look and feel of a space. Whether it’s making a small room appear larger, adding some brightness to dark interiors or simply creating a clean, fresh feeling – the benefits are endless. 30

There are many features that can maximise the natural light, such as hanging up mirrors, painting walls a light colour and fitting large glass doors. A recent survey conducted by Vufold revealed that over 30% of the UK public considered the biggest benefit of bifold doors to be the natural light they let in.

Doors, Windows & Fittings Illusion of space Undoubtedly, an important feature for the majority of homebuyers is having enough space for their family and lifestyle. It isn’t always possible to create a large floor plan when designing a new build – especially if it is in a builtup area. However, bifold doors are a great way to make rooms appear bigger. They can open up two rooms to form one large area and as they fold away to one side, rather than swing open, they take up minimal space.

Outdoor space and views Gardens are a major selling point, especially in a busy city or town. If you’re new build is lucky enough to be surrounded by brilliant views, it’s important to showcase them. Installing bifold doors create a smooth transition between indoors and outdoors and wall-to-wall glass doors highlight surrounding scenery. Their sleek appearance ensures that there will be no clunky door frames getting in the way, even when they’re closed. Rick Collins, director of bi-fold door manufacturers Vufold, said: “Even when glass doors are shut, the owners and guests can still appreciate the garden views from inside the property if it’s too cold to sit outside.”

Added value Resale value is incredibly important. A new build property will instantly add to the resale value due to it being an up-to-date property. But if a home isn’t suited to people’s needs, it could take a long time to sell and cost more money in the long run. The many advantages of bifold doors, which provide a touch of luxury to a home, can add value to a property

And so much more Bifold doors have the potential to enhance a new build property’s design due to the premium and trendy aesthetics. As well as the physical appeal, the practical benefits of bringing in floods of natural light and creating the illusion of space will certainly attract potential buyers.

Luxury New Build Project – Pembroke Road Having previously renovated their house in 2014, this homeowner had planned to install a replication of their previous windows and doors with accurate attention to detail. Only the front wall was retained after the renovation process. This was a stipulation of their successful planning application for a large extension to the rear. The client wanted to be sympathetic to the original building and use slim profiled Georgian casement windows in order to retain and complement the architectural design. As well as Georgian casement windows, a large bank of doors was also requested which included Double French Doors and Bi-Fold Doors. With the size of the luxurious home being approximately 4000sq ft., there were a few challenges in this luxury new build project that needed to be addressed.

Low-Maintenance Casement Windows to Meet Luxurious Extension Requirements One of the main challenges, and specific requirements of the brief, that this luxury new build project faced was to replicate the exact profiles of the

previous windows and doors used in the old house. The 28 Georgian Casement Windows needed to have slim profiles, consistent sight lines, narrow glazing bar designs consisting of durable materials. The homeowners also wanted to mock concrete window cills using an alternative and sustainable material. The rear of the home required 3 Double French Doors and 2 Bi-Folding Doors that would enhance both aesthetical design and ease of operation. The tall Bi-Fold Door needed to achieve a unique specification of 2700mm in height.

Marvin Architectural’s Unmatched Window Design Solutions Aside from being recommended by the architect who has used us on several others projects in the area, Marvin Architectural was selected due to our ability to achieve slim profiles, consistent sight lines and a 16mm glazing bars design which were all possible with a profiled timber interior that Marvin Windows and Doors offer. Marvin aluminium clad wood range offered a sustainable product which provides great architectural detail. Our clad casings are made of ultra-durable 32

extruded aluminium, which features a factory-applied finish that resists chalking, fading, pitting, corrosion and marring. With the ability to deliver Bi-Fold Door openings of 6400mm x 2700mm, Marvin Architectural was well equipped to provide the specific requirement of 2700mm height for this luxury new build project. This contributed to a traditional design with a contemporary operation that allowed the room to infuse with fresh air and spectacular views. The solid wood in the panels and frames of the doors provided an elegant, crafted look and allowed for weathertight closure. Low E II with Argon gas was standard with the glazing. The thermal and structural properties of wood combined with the right glazing make Marvin Windows and Doors the optimal choice for energy efficiency. To replicate the concrete window cills, we supplied aluminium cills in a different colour to the window to mock a concrete cill.

Internal steel sliding doors complement high-end design aesthetic Saving space while providing a contemporary industrial aesthetic, internal steel sliding doors from Steel Window Association members provide solidity without being visually overpowering. The W20 single glazed profiles ensure good sight lines from one area to another, compared to potentially chunky proportions required with timber or aluminium, while allowing maximum light transmission. The slender and robust steel frames are often divided into small panes for aesthetic reasons and are ideally suited to high-end, design-led residential and commercial schemes. Choosing an SWA member to manufacture and install your steel windows and doors ensures that you are receiving the highest standard of fabrication, installation and customer service.

Things people are opting for in a typical kitchen-diner extension Advice from Graham Lindsay from Weru UK. Are bifold doors as popular as sliding ones? There is currently a big swing towards the panoramic full width patio doors versus the multi-pane bifolds which in our experience are on the decline. People now realise that the wow factor from a wide span glazing is 365 days a year whereas with the bifold it only happens when the sun is with us and we can open them up. 330+ days a year they may be closed with all the obtrusive mullions blocking the light and garden views! From a comfort perspective a good panoramic patio door will excel far beyond the best of bifolds both in terms of air tightness, thermal performance and room comfort. 34

Glass Box concept on the rise The trend for extension dayrooms is still on the rise and the push for more glass is very apparent. With new technology, the possibility of the “glass box” concept is now possible and is also becoming a key sector alongside the “extension dayroom” with part glass roofs. There is however, still a huge misconception that all glass rooms may be a risk due to winter and summer comfort. This stems from the generic “90`s conservatory boom” which invariably gave the icebox syndrome in winter and a good sauna in summer. The advent of new innovative glass technology can quickly dispel these myths and properly specified glazing, preferably triple, will ensure high winter

and summer comfort. The benefit of triple is apparent when you must eliminate air movement. With double glazing, even the best underfloor heat sources have a tendency to sit near the glass and will often create a situation of air movement with the heat reaching the colder double glazing resulting in a constant virtual draught. From a building regulations perspective, correct specifications can ensure that even all glass structure with triple glazing can deliver the relevant SAP calculations to be compliant. UK architects have been slow on the uptake here and many do their calculations on the basis of a UK window U Value of as high as 1.6Wmk2 . In reality the latest triple glazed systems with sub0.7Wmk2 can make an amazing difference to what can be permitted. The comfort and shear wow factor from these is unbelievable.

35

There seem to be more fullwidth dormers with sliding or bifold doors, rather than just your standard couple of Velux windows. How much extra effort is this - and why is it worth doing? I would say yes it is worth doing. Day light is therapeutic hence the draw of using glazing to create lighter rooms throughout in the house. The switch to roof lights has taken the market by storm as the comfort factor is high and easier to acquire with a solid insulated roof and some controlled light via trendy flat lantern or Velux style windows. This has led to the demise of the full glass roofed conservatory and extensions.

A lighter and brighter home in Bude with Origin The house is spacious with four bedrooms and three reception rooms, however, when the couple chose to renovate their kitchen to a more contemporary style, they saw an opportunity to extend and create a larger, brighter living space. The couple felt that the back of their house lacked natural light and was generally a dark and unenjoyable space. They knew that with their extension they would want to bring in as much natural light as possible and connect the inside of their home with their beautiful garden, which they would do with the use of high-quality glazing. After speaking with their local trade partner, Prime Windows, the couple decided Origin Doors and Windows were the right products for them and their home. And, the couple went big. For their new kitchen dining space, they chose an impressive 7-door configuration, allowing them to completely open up the back of their home with no visual interruption. So easy to use and 67% lighter than steel, the couple have no trouble opening and closing their large configuration of aluminium bifold doors. And, exceeding current building regulations, the couple needn’t worry about losing heat in the winter with their Origin Bi-fold Doors.

To make the most of the light and space, the couple also installed a set of 3-door bi-folds adjacent to the larger set, replicating a corner door set without the need for as much structural work. Another set of 3-door bifolds were installed in their conservatory, just left of their kitchen to enhance the light. And, with extremely smart use of the same flooring inside and out, the couple have created a truly light space that links their kitchen and garden; bringing the outside in. The couple couldn’t be happier with their home transformation and complete kitchen extension. “We think the Origin Doors are brilliant. They bring the whole new look together. The house has a more modern overall feel. Everything has been brought upto-date while retaining it’s personality… it’s seamless,” Martin comments. So impressed with the Origin range of aluminium doors, the couple also decided to replace the windows in their property with Origin’s contemporary, thermally efficient and highly secure windows. The couple’s house has had a contemporary facelift with a mixture of fixed windows, top hung casement windows, side opening casement windows and bay windows, and even an Origin Single Door in their utility room for easy access to their garden.

36

All Martin and Alia’s Origin Doors and Windows were chosen in Slate Grey (7015M) with black gaskets for a highly modern and sleek look throughout the property. When we asked Martin how he feels about the overall extension and addition of Origin Doors and Windows, he said, “we’ve achieved exactly what we set out to do. We’ve created a modern kitchen diner with a light, spacious and airy feel. We use the space every day and love the whole experience. The Origin products are high quality, well built and strong but also easy to use.”

Kawneer glazing systems help bring spectacular aesthetic to a new London HQ the Kawneer curtain walling featuring on the ground to top floors and the AA®100 SSG parallel-opening vents on all but the ground floor. The AA®720 doors feature on the main entrance and top floor which also features a roof terrace. Sam Frankland added: “We wanted to create spaces filled with light and views out over London so we opted for fullyglazed panels with a simple frit to give an element of privacy and a degree of visual interest to the façade.” The aluminium Kawneer systems were installed over eight months by a team of six from approved specialist subcontractor/dealer JPJ Installations for main contractor Willmott Dixon. The charity that today bears the name of Sigmund Freud’s sixth and youngest child was first established almost 70 years ago and its approach, that every child and its family should be at the heart of the care they receive, working in partnership with professionals, has been reflected in Penoyre & Prasad’s design.

Manufacturer’s parallel opening window vents feature at the Anna Freud Centre. Parallel opening window vents by leading manufacturer of architectural glazing systems Kawneer were specified for a mental health project that is arguably without parallel. Some 88 of Kawneer’s AA®100 SSG parallel opening vents were used as concealed windows, to maintain the same aesthetic as the façade, within AA®100 mullion-drained curtain walling and AA®720 doors on the new £40 million London headquarters of the world-famous Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families. The Kawneer systems were specified by architects Penoyre & Prasad as they were a “cost-effective” solution to their

needs and enabled them to use the same systems for all areas of curtain walling and rooflights. Architect Sam Frankland said: “We had an aspiration to create a very clean, paired-down façade that would give clear cohesion to the various buildings. Having scissor-action windows helped emphasise the planar quality when the windows are open.” The project has enabled the relocation of the mental healthcare charity to bring together its global expertise in practice, research and policy under one roof from its residential properties in Hampstead to a purpose-built facility near King’s Cross. This comprises a sixstorey new-build and the refurbishment of a century-old former chocolate factory and warehouse. All of the Kawneer glazing systems feature a diagonal frit on the glass, with 38

This needed to be striking to reflect the charity’s aspirations to reflect its status as a world-renowned organisation working with eminent academic institutions as University College London and Yale. This itself presented a challenge, bringing together the multiple needs of the individual users of the building, from children and their families in need of support, to researchers, clinicians and internationally-renowned visiting academics attending symposia. At the front, in the space made vacant by the excavation of a former courtyard, is the new six-storey building housing shared conference facilities and the Pears Family School which is sponsored by the Anna Freud Centre. This caters for up to 48 youngsters who have been excluded from school or alternative education provision and helps them return to mainstream education.

Doors, Windows & Fittings

Although not listed, heritage officers at Islington Council had still been anxious about how it would be developed. “The client was very keen to have as environmentally friendly a building as possible so aluminium seemed like the natural choice for the curtain wall system which has been used extensively to the east and west facades and as a large rooflight, said Sam Frankland. Based on the established Kawneer AAŽ100 SSG POV system, the parallel opening design benefits from excellent ventilation characteristics combined with thermal performance. Increased air flow around the full perimeter of the window enables highly efficient natural ventilation while greatly reducing draughts as fresh air is drawn in the bottom of the window while warm, stale air is expelled via the top, creating full air circulation within a room. Penoyre & Prasad worked from the outset with the diagonal motif on the glazing on both the front and rear facades to inform both the transparent elevation and the precast cheeks of the building which they could do very little with as they were both party walls but which nevertheless replicate the diagonal fritting.

The five-storey chocolate factory, parts of which had been used as offices since the 1990s, was converted into a combination of head office facilities and therapy, post-graduate teaching and research (part of which had been based at University College London) and break-out spaces for the Anna Freud Centre. 39

This efficient exchange of air can assist with Approved Document F compliance and can enable the window to meet the ventilation requirements of even the most demanding project.

A stylish, custom-built home at Park Gwyn in Cornwall For Frank and Wendy Bradshaw, building their new home at Park Gwyn meant the fulfilment of a long-held ambition to return to St Stephen near St Austell. Frank had previously run a Cornish pasty factory in the area and although the couple had moved away, they were excited to return to St Stephen, where they have friends and family. The couple turned to Ian Burley of Burley Construction and placed their trust in his vision to create their dream home. The company had built St Martins Hotel in the Isles of Scilly and has a passion for creating buildings that

blend harmoniously within their natural environment. Ian says: “The brief from Frank and Wendy was unusually open. They said, ‘We will leave it all up to you’. This was of course immensely exciting, as well as carrying a huge responsibility to make sure I delivered a home they would love. From the outset, I saw the project as a Grand Design. This was an opportunity to build a completely bespoke, top of the range home. I wanted to create a house that was contemporary yet classic, with clean fresh lines, and making the most of its glorious outlook over Cornish countryside.” 42

Architects Projects The new build dormer bungalow is a 390 square metre timber frame property with many spectacular features such as vaulted ceilings, a frameless glass balcony and a dramatic helical staircase. A modern feel is created by the combination of glass, anthracite grey RAL 7016, and stainless steel. This is offset by the wood effect Amtico vinyl flooring in a herringbone pattern, which is used throughout. Ian says: “As soon as I saw the building plot, I immediately had a clear design concept in mind and I conveyed this to the architects, RA Design in St Ives. They grasped the concept immediately and the whole process of drawing up and signing off the architectural plans was completed with only two meetings – far fewer than would normally be expected.” Ian continues: “The planning process was also straightforward as there was already an existing bungalow on the site. Once the old bungalow had been demolished and removed, the disused mine shaft on the site was capped and the pilings needed for the foundations followed. After these groundworks had been completed, we started on the build in the Spring of 2019.

“The timber frame was supplied by Frame UK. Normally a timber frame can be erected in three days but this one took over five weeks as it was so large and included no less than 48 pieces of steel for the vaulted ceilings. Once it was up, we could really see the house starting to come together.” The house includes underfloor heating downstairs with radiators upstairs, all powered by an air source heat pump, so it is environmentally friendly and there is no need for oil or gas at the property. Ian comments: “The current government grants towards air source heat pumps mean that these can pay for themselves within 7 years. This was a great choice of eco heating for the property and the house is toasty warm.” Creating a dramatic centrepiece for the house is a feature staircase designed, manufactured and installed by Spiral UK of Helston. Ian says: “We wanted to create a sensational feature, rather than just a functional staircase, and I knew Spiral 43

UK would be able to deliver a staircase with a real Wow factor. We considered some alternative ideas before settling on the final design we chose.” This design is a helical (curved) fabricated steel staircase with painted treads and stringers in Anthracite Grey RAL 7016. The treads have an Amtico vinyl finish which matches the rest of flooring throughout the house. The staircase is enhanced by a toughened glass panel balustrade with a tubular satin polished stainless-steel handrail and uprights. The theme is continued by the matching balustrade to the stairwell and landing area. Ian says: “The stringers on the staircase really zing out as they have such a lovely polished shine. They denote each tread as you look at the staircase. It is a fantastic centrepiece for the house and the matching balustrade to the stairwell and landing area means everything flows seamlessly, creating a sense of airiness and space.”

Architects Projects

Eric Nicholls, the MD of Spiral UK, adds: “At Spiral UK, every single staircase is bespoke. Our team consider the overall design feel of the house and the client’s vision as well as all practical considerations. For this home, we investigated a range of possible designs before settling on this one as the ideal solution. One unusual aspect is that the treads are bolted to the stringers as part of the design rather than welded in place. This creates an interesting visual feature. We are also really proud of the way the stunning combination of modern materials and paint finishes creates a dramatic effect and the way the staircase integrates with the rest of the house.”

This streamlined approach continues throughout the house and is even reflected in the way the TV screens are incorporated into the design. The 85 inch screen in the main living area is flush with the walls and complemented by the fireplace beneath, which is exactly the same size as the TV, so that they appear to merge seamlessly into each other. Even the gutters are seamless with no joints at all, which reduces the likelihood of leaks as well as having a clean appearance. The kitchen was designed and fitted by Varcurn Marble, with top of the range units and an impressive island. Ian says: “Although the Bradshaws were again 44

happy to leave this to me, I did ask for Wendy’s involvement in specifying the kitchen as this is such a personal choice. The kitchen has turned out to be the heart of the home.” The upstairs of the property is further enhanced by the stunning vaulted windows that go right up to the ridge beam. There is also a frameless glass balcony accessible from the landing in between the two bedrooms. Ian says: “This overlooks the school playing fields, with rolling Cornish fields and woodland beyond. Frank and Wendy will be able to take in the glorious views whilst being close by to their grandson Harley who is at the school.”

Architects Projects

The house also reflects its Cornish heritage throughout. The roof is natural slate and there is Cornish granite on the steps outside both the front and rear doors. The Bradshaws were thrilled to move into their new house in early November 2019. Frank says: “For us this really is coming home. Our house at Park Gwyn encapsulates everything we love about 45

Cornwall living – the sense of airiness, the superb craftsmanship and the slightly quirky unique style.” Ian agrees: “This house is completely bespoke. There is no other house quite like it anywhere in Cornwall.”

Rinnai hot water – reliably instant, energy efficient and lower fuel costs for UK homeowners 46

Heating, Ventilation & Insulation end residential houses - as installers and end users become aware of the ease of installation, and the energy & cost saving benefits. Rinnai manufactures over 2million water heaters every year and as such is at the forefront of creating unit cost advantages for installers. Competitively priced, the units offer all technological advances and innovations, all at a similar cost to lower specification competitor models. The reason for the increase in popularity is that continuous flow heating systems are proven to be more energy efficient than conventional ones and are now the preferred method of hot water provision. Rinnai units meet the demands of any size of home and are ideal where high volumes are demanded at intermittent times of the day, delivering safe temperature useable hot water. Rinnai’s multipoint 17i water heater, for example, eliminates the problem of sudden changes in water temperature, resulting in cold showers or scalding hot baths – the water temperature you set is the water temperature you get. So, if somebody is happily showering at 42°C and a tap is turned on to draw a bath elsewhere in the property, the temperature does not vary, and there is no chance of either user running out of hot water.

Rinnai’s range of ErP A-rated continuous flow gas-fired hot water heaters now includes models specifically aimed and designed for the UK domestic market. The units guarantee high efficiencies and low running costs combined with consistent water temperatures seven days a week. Rinnai’s range of continuous flow water heating units are being specified and installed in the whole range of domestic properties – studios, flats, houses, high-

The Rinnai 16i interior model measures just 675 x 370 x 139mm and weighs in at 18kg - a one-man lift. The room-sealed unit has a temperature range of 35°C to 60°C with direct electronic ignition. Gas consumption ranges between 4.7kW6.5kW for Natural Gas and 4.9kW36.8kW when using propane. Hot water delivery flow is an impressive 16ltr max flow. Nominal operation pressure is 1-7 bar and it uses a 230V AC 50Hz 1ph power supply with an electrical consumption of 68W.

47

Meanwhile, where an external installation is required, the Rinnai 17e external multipoint water heater offers greater flexibility at the design stage and offers a viable solution where flue runs are problematic or internal space is not available. Capable of flow rates of up to 510 litres per hour at a 50°C rise, the 17e is suitable for multiple applications and can be specified for use with Natural Gas or propane. The 17e has full frost protection and is available with a range of external ancillary items, including pipe cover box – and security cage where necessary. For smaller properties, the Infinity 11i interior unit differs from the 17i as it weighs 2kg less at 16kg and consumes 6.10kW-21.60kW of Natural Gas and has an 11-litre maximum flow. Key features of the 24kW Rinnai 11i are: Compact & lightweight unit for easy installation; Robut, durable heat exchanger; User friendly digital controls; In-built frost protection; Ideal replacement for large obtrusive and bulky cylinder; Compact design to fit a limited space. Heating, Ventilation & Insulation Energy conscious users’ only option was to turn the plinth heater off manually to avoid over heating the kitchen during cooking periods. This in turn could leave the customer facing a cold kitchen in the morning, if they forgot to turn the heater back on again. Some may have overcome this situation by installing a hardwired thermostat to control their plinth heaters but this would result in increased installation costs.

Giving control back to the customer Installing the hydronic plinth heater is a great choice for home owners when either replacing the traditional kitchen radiators or planning a new kitchen. Plinth heaters can not only save space, they are much cheaper to install compared to under floor heating. Although plinth heaters are proven to be the best choice in heating the

kitchen compared to radiators or UFH, in the past, they lacked controllability. The only control available was by means of a simple rocker switch to turn the heater on/off manually. When a radiator was replaced with a plinth heater, people lost their control as they no longer had the benefits of a simple TRV with radiators, which maintained the kitchen temperature.

At Thermix, we found a solution to overcome plinth heater controllability, giving our customers the same control as they had with the previous radiator. We have introduced the hydronic plinth heater controlled by a wireless thermostat to control the temperature of the room where the heater is installed. Thermix wireless models not only provide temperature control in the kitchen but also the user doesn’t need to worry about wasting energy. Our wireless plinth heater is also available with a programmable thermostat, providing a 7-day timing facility. This allows the user to set the timing as well as the temperature. Thermix wireless plinth heaters models are available with four different heat outputs ranging from 1.5kW to 2.4 kW. Also offered are a choice of front grilles, including the popular brushed stainless steel version, and a range of powder coated options in white, silver or black. For customers who want to colourmatch their plinth, there is a self-colour grille ready to paint. Customers also have the option of choosing from a simple wireless thermostat to a smart phone controlled thermostat. For larger kitchens, multiple wireless plinth heaters can be controlled by a single thermostat. With the help of their low water content, thermix plinth heaters provide faster heat response and leave much less residual heat when the heater turns off. This feature not only provides comfort heating to the user but also saves energy by not heating the room when it’s not needed. It’s Thermix. www.thermix.co.uk sales@thermix.co.uk | 01206 618080

The partially subterranean Barrow House emulates a modern barn and was constructed using innovative construction techniques and finished with a range of high quality finishes and detailing. The house adopts a huge range of sustainable features such as a ground source heat pump and a roof top wildflower meadow. 52

Steve Turner, Managing Director of Belvin Construction said: “This was an amazing project to be part of and we couldn’t be more proud of our work. It’s a very modern building, but I think the design and the materials suit the environment perfectly.

Architect Projects

It was also really good to work with great architects and contractors which are all based in the area; this project has helped to put Lincolnshire on the map and proved once again what we’re all capable of.” Commissioned in 2016, it was the first home in Lincolnshire to be brought forward under Paragraph 79, a clause that allows for exceptional design in rural areas. The owners moved into the modern four bed home this spring. The home looks out onto an ancient monument called “the Barrow” and was built using a concrete frame with durable cladding which is designed to rust as it’s exposed to the elements.

53

The home features 18 metre long sliding doors, offering impressive views over the natural landscape. Barrow House was designed by ID Architecture and Belvin Construction managed the construction of the project. Groundworks were carried out by CLS Engineering, steelwork was by P&D Engineering, plumbing was by Andrew E Barnes, ground source and underfloor heating was installed by Trusted Energy and decorating was by Richard Betts; all of which are based in Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire and North Nottinghamshire.

Luxury London living: Islinghaus Apartments Islinghaus Apartments is a luxurious duplex apartment development, located in the popular Angel district of North London.

Designed with the London working professional as the end-user in mind, ÂŁ800,000 was spent on bringing this previously neglected property to life.

The extensive renovation project was the first in the capital for Leeds-based contractor Priestley Construction, part of the wider Priestley Group, which specialises in heritage and listed buildings.

With this scheme, Priestley Construction has delivered its highest specification project yet. The apartments provide the perfect setting for those wanting to relax while still being located at the centre of the city’s action.

Having completed multiple successful residential and commercial developments throughout Leeds and the North of England, they were ready to make their mark in London. Alongside this first project, Priestley Construction already has a number of other developments underway for more clients across the city. Starting with an ageing public house on Packington Street in Islington, Priestley Construction meticulously transformed the building to produce three stunning duplex apartments for rent.

54

Photography: Andrew Sidebottom, Freelance Photographer, Post Production Editor and Product Developer at 2.8 Creative.

Work to transform the public house was no small feat. The developers were faced with the challenge of creating enough space to ensure the apartments could be duplex homes. This meant that construction work began with a complete strip-out, followed by raising the roof of the building to allow for the second floor.

Interiors & Interior Design Following this initial work, new acoustic flooring was laid throughout the property and external walls were demolished to expose the original brick and give the apartments a modern, industrial style. A watertight timber-frame extension was built with the addition of bespoke profile timber sliding sash windows and the creation of new dormer windows. Priestley Construction was also tasked with preserving certain parts of the original building. By seamlessly moulding the custom-built cornice on the extension to match the existing structure’s features they were able to preserve elements of its style. With the upper floors in place, structural steelwork was put in place to provide additional stability and this also allowed for contemporary, open spiral staircases to be built. Priestley Construction also created spacious terraces for all three apartments, fitted with AstroTurf to give residents their own manageable green space in the city. Each unique apartment has been finished to the highest standard, and every aspect has been carefully considered to give a sophisticated end result to each home. Farrow & Ball paint was used in neutral colours throughout each home. All apartments were fitted with stunning Villeroy & Boch bathrooms, providing a personal oasis for those who live there. Main bedrooms are fitted with highspecification wardrobes and spacious dressing rooms, as well as their own en-suite wet rooms.

55

Interiors & Interior Design The kitchen and living areas feature beautiful oak herringbone flooring and expensive floor-to-ceiling windows that embrace the natural light. Sleek kitchen units and motorised pop-up extraction fans create a seamless space. Embracing the epitome of luxury living, all apartments are fitted with smart technology, including integrated music systems with the ability to play a range of music simultaneously in different rooms. The location of the apartments is ideal for commuters; the development is situated just 500 metres from Angel Tube Station and half a mile from Essex Road rail station. Residents will be able to reach The City of London and Camden Town in less than 20 minutes.

Priestley Construction has delivered a modern living space in a much-soughtafter area. The design is a combination of elegance and simplicity and will prove to be an extremely popular option on London’s burgeoning rental market.

Brand New Surfaces added to the dp-limitless Collection by Decorative Panels Lamination Autumn 2019 marked the launch of three new additional ranges to further enhance the stocked dp-limitless Collection available from Elland-based Decorative Panels Lamination – and alongside stunning products from Pfleiderer and REHAU are out of the ordinary surfaces from Voice Tec. Taking its offer to more than 90 laminates from Pfleiderer’s DST collection, the new additions to Decorative Panels dp-limitless range include striking unicolours like Orange, Signal Red and Gentian Blue. Grain embossed unicolours have also been added along with embossed woodgrains like Milano Walnut, Ponderosa Pine, Bordeaux Oak, St Tropez Oak and Zebrano. Unlike traditional bonding techniques which use cold pressed Emulsion Adhesives, dp-lamination bonds the Laminate to the substrate using a high performance PUR adhesive. Not only does this give a higher glue line strength it offers the additional benefits of being waterproof with excellent low and high temperature performance. There is no doubt that Laminate bonded in this way has all round superior qualities when compared to other methods. The new Pfleiderer products are available in laminated board size of 3050 x 1300 x 15mm, or 18mm MDF,

and 2440 x 1220mm dp-lite hollowcore in variety of thicknesses and quantities from just one board. Next to be launched was the REHAU Rauvisio Crystal range – a collection of on-trend surface materials suitable for both furniture and interior wall cladding applications. Rauvisio Crystal combines the visual appeal of glass with the uncomplicated processing properties of an acrylic, and it comes with the added advantage of being 10 times more break resistant than real glass and half the weight. It’s also light, UV, scratch and impact resistant. REHAU’s Rauvisio Crystal décors – Conglomerato Chiaro, Conglomerato Scuro, Marmo Toscana, Marmo Romano, Marmo Bianco, Marmo Nero and Ruggine – have all been added to the dp-limitless offer and all the designs are available in gloss and matt finishes. All are available laminated on 2800 x 1300 x 15mm MDF and in quantities as low as a single sheet. For a seamless look, matching edgebanding is available directly from REHAU. If you’re looking for a finish that’s very different, you’re sure to find inspiration in a new collection of Voice Tec acrylic textured surfaces that’s been added to the dp-limitless range under the Textured Surfaces category. Decorative Panels Lamination has launched six 61

1.4mm thick patterns that are supplied in a white matt finish for recoating with a universal 1mm backing sheet, if required. Launched by dp-lamination at the Surface & Materials Show in October, Voice Tec’s Loop, Cactus, Diamantino, Italian Plank, Juta and Giglio are deeply textured and very tactile. Taking inspiration from flowers and bark as well as metals, weaves and abstract patterns, these totally unique finishes are ideal for any custom project, and the surface can be used either uncoated or with an over lacquer. It can be painted or lacquered using acrylic, polyurethane or water-based finishes, it’s resistant to weather and UV rays and can be processed using normal woodworking tools and machinery. Recoatable edging is also available. If you need a design creating to your own specification, Voice Tec will even do that for you and Decorative Panels Lamination will apply it to 3050 x 1300 x 15mm MDF panels. Decorative Panels Lamination will be showcasing all of their new designs at The Surface and Design Show in February. For more information on these three exciting additions, contact Decorative Panels Lamination on 01484 658341 or visit www.decorativepanels.co.uk

Childcare Institutions with Sound Design The design of spaces for children is intriguing because of the permanent influence it can have on them. A new online theme by Danish acoustic panel manufacturer Troldtekt explores through articles and expert interviews how good acoustics plays its part when designing these areas. Of course, other factors such as colour, shapes, robustness and finish also have an impact but so does sound. Children are noisy and active and the rooms they inhabit are typically large. Careful design considerations are particularly important because a child’s environment moulds their perspectives for the future and the development of the mind and body. School, activity and childcare spaces all affect self-esteem, performance and friendships and help shape the individual into the adults they will become. Studies such as Bronzaft and McCarthy (1975) have shown the effect noise has on wellbeing and learning - This is the reason why the products of specialist manufacturers like Troldtekt are specified to solve the problems of noise and

reverberated sounds. If acoustic absorption is ineffective, discomfort and irritation will result from the reverberations. If it is designed well, the participant’s interest will increase, as many case studies for new and transformed buildings prove. In an interview with Troldtekt, the Danish education psychologist Mille Sylvest comments, “It’s very important to be aware of noise when designing facilities. Noise affects stress levels for both children and staff because nobody can endure spending long periods of time in a noisy environment. Lower energy levels, more sick leave and poorer learning outcomes are the direct results of noise.” Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. This high performance is recognised

64

by their Cradle to Cradle certification at Silver level. Available in various sizes and in four grades from extreme fine to coarse, the panels can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. 2020 Houzz Home Design Trend Predictions 1. Colourful kitchens.

2. Sustainability.

With homeowners starting to step away from the safety of a monochrome palette, kitchens look set to become much more colourful in 2020. We’re increasingly seeing colourful kitchen photos uploaded to Houzz showing that homeowners are choosing cabinets in a range of cheerful shades, from blues and greens to heathery purples. But it doesn’t stop there, surprisingly, one of the new search terms on Houzz this year was ‘yellow kitchen’; proving that homeowners are prepared to go bold with their colour choices. ‘Cream kitchen’ also made an appearance in the rising search terms list, marking a step away from the classic white kitchen.

Sustainability is becoming a more frequently requested feature by homeowners on Houzz, with 15% of renovators stating that ‘integrating green materials’ was a priority when completing renovations, according to Houzz research. The word ‘eco’ also made it into the 2019 most searched for keywords on Houzz. Many of the design fairs around the world this year saw designers rise to the challenge by experimenting with eco materials, recyclable products and putting a big focus on the life cycle of a product, and this looks set to continue to build in 2020.

66

2020 Housing Trends 3. Black interiors.

6

We’re seeing dark colours becoming more popular among the Houzz community, and this looks set to rise even further with searches for ‘dark’ and ‘black’ interiors appearing in the most popular list for the first time in 2019, with ‘black kitchen’ in particular increasing 46% year on year. A surprising addition to the most popular search terms this year was ‘black bathroom’ which wasn’t in the charts at all in 2018. Some of the most popular photos at the end of 2019 back up this emerging trend, with images featuring black painted walls, black metal-framed screens and even black slate wall covering all finding their way onto the site.

4. Bamboo. With a rising interest in all things sustainable, we’ve noticed bamboo starting to trend as an eco-material, cropping up in the most searched terms on Houzz for the first time this year, we’re also seeing more and more photos uploaded featuring this material. Technically a fast-growing grass, bamboo is a sturdy and renewable raw material that can be used for flooring, furniture and even woven into fabric. Professionals on Houzz flagged this trend earlier this year, and while this material isn’t new, it’s definitely enjoying a renewed interest going into 2020, thanks to its eco-credentials.

6. Statement-making bathrooms. With Houzz research finding that bathrooms were one of the most renovated rooms in the UK last year, it isn’t surprising that homeowners are upping the ante when it comes to updating them. Gone are the days of the all-white bathroom and designers on Houzz are tapping into a desire for a bathing space homeowners can show off and, more importantly, retreat to for some quality relaxation time.

7 Next year Houzz expects to see more luxury finishes, statement tiles and bold colours in bathrooms. For homeowners looking to make a bigger statement, we predict we will start seeing more pastel-coloured sanitaryware, in soft pinks, greens and blues.

7. Navy bedrooms. ‘Navy bedroom’ is a new search term that climbed into the most popular searches this year and looks set to lead in 2020. This possibly takes its cue from the trend for inky blue living rooms and kitchens of previous years, and gives a nod to the move away from Scandi-inspired minimalism and into darker and more atmospheric interiors.

5. Green schemes. Another trend coming through strongly is the colour green, with designers calling this the ‘must’ colour in design for 2020. This year we saw a rise in searches for ‘green kitchens’, increasing by 50% since 2018, along with searches for ‘green bedrooms’ and ‘green bathrooms’ which both made their way into the most popular list for the first time.

Five Kitchen Design Mistakes and How to Avoid Them 4. Neglecting ventilation

The kitchen is the place where your mornings begin and where time is spent in the evening alongside family and friends, but when it comes to a kitchen renovation, there are a number of mistakes that are often overlooked throughout the process. Here, the team at Optiplan Kitchens shares the five most common design mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Miscalculating storage One of the first steps towards designing and maintaining a kitchen is by forward-planning your storage arrangement. Storage is always about achieving a balance, as by not using all the available space creates empty areas that could ruin the aesthetic, while an overwhelming number of shelves can give off the look of a cramped space. Prevent this happening by making use of every available place, but be clever about it. Utilise space underneath units or creatively within drawers. Another storage hack that you may not think of is installing cabinets above the fridge. The fact of the matter is that integrated storage plays a crucial role in preventing the unsightly last minute solutions like rarely used pots and pans from stacking up and getting in the way.

2. Lack of lighting One of the key elements not only in kitchen design, but also a basic of interior design for all rooms in the

house, is good lighting. From setting the mood for dining areas to accentuating countertop areas, the choice of light makes a huge difference. Instead of placing harsh lighting everywhere, opt for warmer tones that create an ambient feeling and use dimmer switches for places where family and friends gather. For accent or task lighting in spaces used for cooking, we recommend cooler-toned bulbs for focal spotlights.

3. Going over budget This may be obvious, however, it is a common mistake on a lot of kitchen renovations. An easy way to avoid this is by creating an inventory list that includes both furniture and contents. Plan accordingly and allocate a space for every single thing, from spice jars to cutlery-separating drawers. Although the temptation to keep adding to the list can be big, a clear initial index will keep you on track and you won’t end up overcrowding your brand new kitchen. 68

Kitchen ventilation is one of those less glamorous aspects yet crucial it is not overlooked. Cooking delicious dishes can leave lingering smells throughout the home, effectively ruining the pleasant atmosphere. Invest in a proper ventilation system that is efficient at capturing impurities, circulates air and, overall, keeps your kitchen clean. Try not to go for inexpensive products that only recirculate the flow of air and use up lots of energy; there’s always a solution that keeps the noise levels and energy use to a minimum.

5. Not asking for help There’s no shame in getting some expert advice, especially when undertaking a massive project such as a kitchen renovation. Complicated wiring, plumbing or ventilation systems are not to be messed with unprofessionally. Plus, having a registered tradesperson to lend a helping hand can relieve the pressure of thinking about every single detail. Looking at the bigger picture, a smart investment at the beginning of the project can prove to be more costeffective in comparison to an amateur take on such a complex task.

Kitchens Berbel’s matt black edition from its Formline headroom range of kitchen hoods winner of the 2020 German Design Award for kitchen products design

Kitchen hood maker wins coveted international German Design Award German kitchen hood maker Berbel’s latest matt black edition from its Formline headroom range has won the coveted international German Design Award for 2020 from the German Design Council in the Excellent Product Design – Kitchen category. The award will be presented during next year’s Ambiente 2020, a leading international consumer goods fair to be held in Frankfurt from February 7-11. “It’s not only our Berbel principle [patented use of centrifugal force to produce clean air] that differentiates our products from others, but also the

The Formline extractor hood shuns use of inefficient, rapidly clogged-up stainless steel filters. Instead, it uses the company’s patented centrifugal force technology that sucks in air before spinning off up to 97% of all fat, residues and vapours into a removable, easy-to-clean steel tray.

Highly sensitive touch sensor panels enable users to switch on various functions, while an eco switch gives the intent option of air recirculation or air extraction mode. A fully-removable drip tray catches all extracted fats and other residues, a dimmer switch controls built-in LED lighting, and sound level is a lowly 46db. Extractor sizes range from 60-120cm wide to suit all types of kitchen.

The air is then being recirculated after drawn through renewable carbon filters to remove up to 97% of all cooking smells.

KBB Show Preview

KBB Birmingham prepares for 2020 show Individuality at the forefront of industry trends kbb Birmingham, Europe’s largest dedicated kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms exhibition returns for 2020. Taking place at the NEC from 1-4 March, the show will feature over 400 exhibitors along with showcasing the latest products and innovations. A key talking point at this year’s show will be personalisation. This is a huge trend in the industry right now, with many manufacturers wanting to offer their clients unique products and services that inspire new interior design choices and fits their brief. Based on this emerging trend, the theme for kbb 2020 is “Individuality” – to provide retailers, architects, designers and developers with the correct knowledge and tools to give their clients exactly what they want. When a homeowner considers personalisation there are four main factors that can influence their design choices: function, look, experience and belief. When designing any room whether it’s in a residential or commercial setting, function is always one of the top considerations. In residential spaces, this is often seen in rooms

such as the kitchen or bathroom where homeowners are looking to make maximum use of the space available; products need to be practical and serve a purpose. The look and feel of a room can have a huge impact on the way a room is perceived. An aesthetically pleasing space, that fits in with the client’s personality and character can really make a room feel like home. Similarly, in a commercial setting there can be a real benefit to designing a space that fits in with the brand or business that it represents. A well-designed space has the power to create an atmosphere or a specific experience to fit the rooms purpose. For example, if the homeowner is looking to create a social space for entertaining, seating needs to be taken into consideration as well as logistical factors such as layout to maximise the floor space. Does the room need to be a family space and fit the needs of a busy home with hard-wearing materials? Design can really alter the feel of an environment, and it’s important to understand what the client is looking for.

70

Another design consideration that is increasing in popularity is belief. This could range from a client demand for sustainable manufacturing or vegan design, to ways of organising the room such as Feng Shui. Designers, architects and clients will all have their own personal beliefs and it’s important to weave these into the design of a space - the room needs to represent the brief you are designing for. Making a space feel personal and creating a space that displays the client or homeowner’s individuality is an emerging trend that shows no sign of slowing down. kbb Birmingham will provide a wide range of inspirational exhibitors to bring these elements to life including; Kesseler, Abacus Direct Ltd, Abode, Fisher & Paykel Appliances Ltd, Frontline Bathrooms Ltd, Hafele UK Ltd, J & J Ormerod Plc, Franke, Laufen, Dansani, CRL Stone, RAK Ceramics UK Ltd, Blanco, Villeroy & Boch (UK) Limited, Roca, AEG, Ultra Finishing Limited, mcbath, Nobilia-Werke, Alno and Smeg.

Creating the perfect kitchen-diner Bella Glenn, design expert at Benchmarx Kitchens comments on considerations when creating a kitchen-diner: “When creating a joint kitchen and dining area, you want to create a feeling of openness. However, there is a danger that the room can easily lose definition and simply become an open space without purpose.

To avoid this, and if space allows, an island unit will help break up lines and give clearer function to each area. “Split level islands add interest to any kitchen and incorporating a practical lower breakfast bar or table lets you bring in a contrast. Try a wooden surface and upstands against the gloss of the Soho Gloss Light Grey for a designer look with a practical edge. Not only will this serve as a great place to

74

share meals on the go, but also a multifunction office space - ideal for the occasions where you need to work from home or where homework needs to be completed before dinner. “A premium, natural material works well for this surface, such as Herregards Oak as shown. Complement with wooden chopping boards and chairs with wooden legs to establish a unified look.

Kitchens The Eton Matt Carbon kitchen from Benchmarx Kitchens and Joinery. Prices start from £1,020 (inc. VAT), for an eight-cupboard kitchen.

“Ensure you incorporate plug sockets into the side of any cabinets or islands, enabling you to work at ease without any lengthy extension cables. The Soho Gloss Light Grey kitchen from Benchmarx Kitchens and Joinery. Prices start from £1,626 (inc. VAT) for an eight-cupboard kitchen. The Eton Matt Carbon kitchen from Benchmarx Kitchens and Joinery. Prices start from £1,020 (inc. VAT), for an eight-cupboard kitchen. “Where space is more limited, a peninsular can offer the same dividing style feature as an island unit and even allow you to incorporate a drop-level breakfast bar, creating a flexible space. Clever use of ceiling height can also denote a new zone without the need for dividing walls. The Eton Matt Dove Grey kitchen from Benchmarx Kitchens and. Prices start from around £1,020 (inc. VAT) for an eight-cupboard kitchen. “As well as providing additional space to eat, work and entertain, you can really maximise your kitchen design by thinking about how you will use the space early on in the planning stages.

Consider extending your island unit with a dropped level where you can incorporate smart storage. Build in space where items can be hidden away, along with open shelving where you can display your most prized cookware and easily access items that you use the most. “Working with a kitchen designer, such as those that work in branch at Benchmarx Kitchens, to chat through your space and requirements can help to bring your ideas to life. An experienced designer will be able to offer you tips on perfecting your design, adding the finishing touches and helping you choose materials, appliances, lighting and surrounding doors to complete your kitchendiner. “It’s also worth considering at this stage how you can carry the design into surrounding areas. For example, if the space leads into

75

an adjoining living room, then think about how you can continue cabinetry through to your television display and cupboards – creating a truly seamless open plan design. This can also be applied to surrounding utility rooms and pantries, where matching materials will give a pleasing, high-end finish.”

The fight for market share – man-made or natural! There is a debate raging in the stone industry. With the increase of market share by man-made materials, in areas traditionally occupied by natural stone, the choice for the consumer has increased. But not always in the full knowledge of what the choices contain

and how they perform. What are the true ecological credentials of either and should we be using them at all? The main battlefield is kitchen work surfaces. Traditionally made from natural marble, and in more recent years granite, limestone and slate - man-made quartz (or engineered 76

quartz) has taken a large chunk of the market. Is the natural stone industry just bleating about a successful rival, when they have long neglected to promote natural stone in any meaningful way themselves?

Kitchens And if man-made quartz is the all singing, all dancing alternative to natural stone, why does it have to assume the names of natural stone, claim it is a version of stone and try to look like stone?

LEFT: Lapitec - sintered stone – Marble & Granite Center. BELOW: Natural stone work-surface.

Man-made quartz (not to be confused with quartzite, which is a natural stone): a composite made from quartz mineral (approx. 75% by volume), bound together with a binder resin, (approx. 24% by volume), and then coloured with pigments, (1 to 2%). Heated, calibrated and polished. The finished product tends to come in singular colours, some with sparkles. Manufacturer’s claim it is chip resistant, moisture and stain resistance and hygienic. There are warnings about placing hot pans directly on the surface as they may crack the material or leave burn marks. The market is becoming saturated with choices and there is an unhealthy market for unbranded material, without the manufacturer’s mark printed on the back, appearing as a cheaper alternative, and therefore without the manufacturer’s guarantee. There is also another man-made product on the market called Lapitec which is a “sintered stone”, available from the Marble and Granite Centre in Rickmansworth, which uses 100% natural products, is inert, recyclable and has excellent ecological credentials. Natural granite is igneous rock, formed at high temperatures in the earth’s crust, made up of varying quantities of feldspar, quartz, and mica. The name is applied to a variety of igneous rock, similar in structure, but not all the same. Generally, it is hard wearing, heat resistant and can be sealed to resist liquid ingress, which makes maintenance simple. It can be highly polished or honed. Colours can be uniform pinks and creams - salt and pepper or wild and unique. Marble and limestone are increasingly specified for high end luxury apartment work-tops. These look beautiful, but the materials are calcium carbonate based and can be susceptible to acid etching from citreous fruit, wine and household cleaners. Though some prefer the natural patina that develops on the surface of these stones with age and use.

What can you do with all those the old worksurfaces once you decide to replace them in 10 or 20 years’ time? Will an indestructible pile of inorganic resin bonded material pile-up somewhere, like the fridge mountains of earlier this century? What is contained in the resin that binds the man-made quartz together? Certainly Lapitec and all natural stones can be crushed and returned to the earth, naturally. More questions than answers? Ultimately, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Perhaps, like imitations gone before, natural stone will shrug off the competition in time.

77

After all, its been around for millions of years and will probably be around for a few more. Will its rivals? What’s your choice? Robert Merry is a Director of the Stone Consultants. Kitchens

Kitchen layouts If you’re looking for comfort and style from your kitchen, then it’s vital that you consider your layout carefully. Here are six very different kitchen layouts from Caple:

Galley kitchen This design is usually confined to an area where space may be tight. Therefore, the units will fit along at least one or two opposing walls. This design could be useful if you want to have an opening at both ends of the room. It can create an interesting walkthrough from the hallway to the garden, for example. The galley kitchen can also provide a comfortable option with easy access to appliances.

U-shaped kitchen A U-shaped kitchen tends to feature cabinets on three walls. In this space, you’ll be able to introduce the ‘working triangle’ concept. Put simply, this is where your refrigeration, ovens and sink are positioned across the three areas for added accessibility.

L-shaped kitchen

Island kitchen

I know there are a number of kitchen layouts available to choose from, however you’ll find this design also tends to suit the working triangle. For example, you could place refrigeration at one end with a sink in the middle and ovens at the other end. This design solution will suit an awkwardly-shaped kitchen, too.

As the kitchen has become so much more than simply a cooking space, one of the most popular options, in recent years, has been to introduce an island unit. A central island instantly looks impressive and you’ll benefit from plenty of storage, too. You can even add an appliance or sink and tap to your central island - just make sure you plan

78

Kitchens

this in from the start. After all, electrics or plumbing may need to be factored into your island unit design.

One-wall kitchen If space really is tight or perhaps you’re looking to open up a room into a kitchen living space, you may want to consider a one-wall design. This way, you position all your furniture, appliances, sink and tap literally along one wall, providing a compact kitchen solution and more efficient working kitchen. Admittedly, only one person can really cook at a time, however this solution could be ideal for single households.

Peninsular kitchen This is one of the kitchen layouts which, I think, makes a fantastic alternative to the kitchen island. Similar in style, the peninsular part is connected to one wall. So, it’s not freestanding but can still be used in the same way as a central island. This way, you can achieve an ‘island look’ with all its benefits, from additional storage to

79

perhaps housing an appliance, such as a hob. Choosing the right kitchen layout will instantly create a more efficient space so make sure you choose wisely.

Roofing, Cladding & Facades

Reynaers helps to create panoramic views across London Located in the heart of London, a stone’s throw from the Square Mile in the City of London, Royal Mint Gardens sits between the past, the present and the future, adjoining Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. The new site offers panoramic viewpoints over the timeless Thames and London’s iconic skyline and is situated in a privileged position steeped in history. This luxurious development offers the ultimate in modern city living.

Designed by Farrells and combining visionary architecture with innovative engineering, Reynaers is working with developer IJM Land and façade contractor Staticus to supply frameless glazing that offers uninterrupted views across London’s skyline and maximises natural light. Royal Mint Gardens is spread across three blocks, Rosemary, Lavender and Sage and the project is due to be completed in December 2019.

86

The project has been particularly challenging given the close proximity of existing transport infrastructure, but measures have been put in place to minimise any potential disruption; an existing underground railway viaduct was demolished as part of the enabling works for the site, while the overground line was retained and remained in use. Additionally, an encapsulation structure has been installed over the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Bank line, which

The unique slender aesthetics of Reynaers’ ‘Element Façade CW 65EF’ aluminium curtain wall provide maximum transparency without compromising on the extreme strength and stability required in high-rise construction. The system is available in varying insulation levels and glazing variants to provide the optimum solution for different projects. Both external and internal balconies unify three towers of varying heights, to provide spectacular viewpoints from every level. Reynaers’ Concept Patio (CP) 155-LS sliding doors have been selected for their premium look and insulation qualities as well as practical advantages such as a low threshold option for optimal accessibility. Royal Mint Gardens features the upgraded version of CP 155-LS with High Insulation (HI) to increase insulation values for low-energy buildings. A further variant is also available which holds the Swiss Minergie® component label, the sustainability brand for new and refurbished buildings.

An exclusive leisure retreat offers residents a cinema room, residents lounge and private dining rooms as well as two courtyard gardens. With more than 13,000 square meters of unitised façade structures installed

Commenting on the development, Neil Garner, International Project Consultant at Reynaers, said “Royal Mint Gardens is a fantastic development in one of the most iconic cities in the world. The new project will provide residents with epic views across the Capital, coupled with contemporary design and high-quality amenities. At Reynaers, we strive to enhance the built environment, whilst ensuring that all our ranges offer residents optimum security and safety.” Royal Mint Gardens is redefining city living with innovative design both inside and out combined with unrivalled access to the City and showstopping views. Set within a landscaped piazza to provide further space for socialising and relaxation, the development offers a unique location to enjoy life in the beating heart of London. Rooflights

Paul Trace, Director of Stella Rooflight offers some practical advice when choosing a rooflight for your home Rooflights, or skylights as they are often called, are an excellent way to illuminate your home as they let in light from the brightest part of the sky and are not generally affected by external obstructions, such as tress or other buildings. They provide an even distribution of light and can brighten the dark areas in a room that vertical windows could never reach. Of course, in applications such as loft conversions they may be your only option to let in light. However, they are also a popular choice for other parts of the home where the ceiling has the potential to be opened up, and can make an excellent addition to kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces.

When specifying rooflights there are other aspects to consider beyond its shape, size, and the materials that it is made from. However, with so many options available, choosing the most suitable rooflight for your home can be anything but straightforward and there are a few key things to consider when deciding which product is best for you.

Choosing the right frame The first thing to consider is the type of materials that are available for the rooflight frame. There are many different types of rooflight on the market catering for the modern contemporary style through to a more traditional look and feel. 90

Steel is the obvious choice for period properties and barn conversions, but they are now also being more frequently used in sleek new contemporary houses. Timber is a long-time favourite on homes of any style, but getting onto the roof to maintain the timber can be an awkward task. PVCu is also an option and is often the cheapest, but it will not provide the slim frames that metal is capable of, nor the natural look of wood. The important thing is to select a rooflight that matches the look and feel that you are trying to achieve with your home, as it should blend in with your roof and the materials used throughout the rest of the house.

Rooflights Glazing options Once you have chosen the most appropriate material for your rooflight, you then need to consider the glazing options. Glazing can also be a tricky subject when specifying a rooflight, not least because there are so many different types of glass and glazing system available. Aside from thermal performance you need to decide if you need toughened glass, for additional safety and protection against falling objects. Toughened glass does not mean that it is suitable to walk on, so if you need to stand on a rooflight it will require specialist glazing. Self cleaning glass is another option. This technological breakthrough was introduced to the UK in 2002 by Pilkington, and is effectively the same as conventional glass, but with a specially developed coating on the outside, that once exposed to daylight, reacts in two ways.

Firstly, it breaks down any organic dirt deposits through a photocatalytic process, and secondly, when it rains, instead of forming droplets, the water spreads evenly over the surface and takes the dirt off with it. It is kinder to the environment than ordinary glass and it is the ideal choice for situations where cleaning will be costly or difficult. You also have the option for double or triple glazing. This is probably fairly obvious, but you should always opt for triple glazing if budget allows as this will have a significant impact on the thermal performance of the rooflight. Few rooflight companies will offer triple glazing as standard, so be aware of this when you are gathering and comparing quotes. It is also possible to have solar control glazing, which incorporates invisible layers of special materials on the glass that has the dual effect of allowing sunlight in, while repelling solar heat. Allowing sunlight to pass through your

91

rooflight while radiating and reflecting away a large degree of the sun’s heat means that your indoor space stays bright and much cooler than would be the case if normal glass were used. Solar control glass is not necessarily coloured or mirrored glass, although such finishes can be applied for aesthetic purposes if desired.

Conservation style rooflights If you have a Listed property or live within a Conservation Area, you may be restricted in the type of rooflight you are allowed to install and the chances are that you will need a traditional or conservation style rooflight that complies with strict building regulations. The legislation around conservation rooflights state that new openings should generally be kept to a minimum and should be of a simple form that respects the building’s character.

Rooflights

Dormer windows are not usually appropriate, so any new window openings in the roof will likely need to be rooflights, and in most instances metal conservation-style rooflights which sit flush with the line of the roof. There are specialist rooflights that are manufactured for the heritage property market and conservation rooflights are easily recognised by their low profile which means they sit flush and remain unobtrusive to the building’s original architecture. Another characteristic is their slender appearance as conservation requirements stipulate that a minimal amount of framework should be visible, particularly if rooflights are placed next to each other.

Another feature of a genuine conservation rooflight is the glazing mullion (glazing bar) which separates the glazing into sections. This follows the traditional conservation rooflight design and not only provides a more authentic look but offers increased strength for the opening section.

If your property is Listed you will need to work closely with your local authority before making changes to the building fabric. An excellent resource to find out more on this topic is the Listed Property Owners Club, www.lpoc.co.uk.

There are a number of manufacturers who claim to offer conservation roof windows but have opted to remove the traditional bar in favour of sticking something to the double glazed unit. Not only does this risk damaging selfclean glazing or worse, having it fall off after a few years, it also significantly detracts from the original conservation rooflight appearance.

Maintenance of your rooflight is often something that manufacturers will be uncomfortable discussing with you, as they are all too aware of the difficulty in achieving this. However, the fact is that, like most any other part of your home, it will require a degree of care to maximise its lifespan.

92

Maintaining your rooflight

Proper maintenance is particularly important if you are specifying a metal

Rooflights

with rainwater on a regular basis is eventually going to rust without regular maintenance. Furthermore, if you are fortunate enough to live within 5km of the coast, then the risk of the corrosion will be both fast and significant, due to the elevated salt content in the atmosphere. It is advisable to check the manufacturer’s warranty when it comes to your responsibilities concerning maintenance, as you could be expected to clean and maintain your rooflight as often as 4 times a year in order to keep your guarantee valid! Which is obviously not ideal for anyone who has neither the ability nor inclination to climb up their roof every few months!

Rooflights and environmental performance product; in which case it is highly recommended that you opt for a 316 stainless steel frame. Not only is this a significantly stronger material that can withstand greater stress and tolerance levels, but more importantly it is much less susceptible to rust. It is widely accepted that mild/carbon steel will start to rust the moment that it comes into contact with the atmosphere. While steel rooflight manufacturers will protect steel with a paint application, the quality and level of maintenance provided by the homeowner will still determine the lifespan of the product. Now in the UK, where it rains (a lot!), a mild steel rooflight which is in direct contact

Consideration must be given to thermal performance and improving carbon and energy reduction in buildings. Part L of the building regulations is one of the tools used by the government to achieve these objectives. These regulations are subject to continual change and are set to change again in 2020, as the UK Government continues its drive towards greater thermal efficiency in house building. Rooflights can have a major impact on the overall energy consumption of a building, cutting energy costs by reducing need for use of the electric lights. However, there are some products that perform well above the minimum recommended environmental standards that could bring about even 93

greater benefits in terms of thermal performance. So deciding on the right materials, of which the choice is plentiful, will be key. Whatever your choice of material it is important that you check the energy rating performance and U Values of the glazing. It is worth asking exactly how each product performed under test conditions as there are many variables within the test that will differentiate between an average performing rooflight and an excellent one.

Make sure you are comparing like-for-like As with most things in life, you tend to get what you pay for, and this is particularly true when comparing the rooflight market. Prices often reflect the quality of manufacturing and materials used to produce roof windows. While prices may vary considerably, there is good reason for this and the difference in quality between the bottom and high end of th rooflight market can be night and day. The rooflight may be one of the last things that you budget for, but it is also one of the most important finishing touches to your home. Opting for the cheapest product may come back to haunt you in the long run.

Tackling poverty and teaching skills with MEDITE SMARTPLY The New Community Men’s Shed, a social enterprise established in May 2019 teaches joinery skills using SMARTPLY OSB to male refugees in Waterford, Ireland. Members are drawn from the Viking House Direct Provision Centre for refugees in Waterford and are encouraged to engage in team joinery activities to build not only skills and useful items, but new connections too. “Refugees are among the most vulnerable groups in our community,”

said Frank Kennedy, Manager at the Men’s Shed, “They arrive in the UK with few to no connections to their host community, little English language speaking ability and are most likely to enter a cycle of poverty which may last for generations. We think that we can prevent this by engaging them in a Men’s Shed.” Members are encouraged to engage in 30 hours or more of group activities at the Shed, during which time they’ll build items of furniture and also learn

94

basic English through immersion in the language. “We try to create an informal environment- this is a place to relax as much as it is to learn and focus the mind on productive activities,” explains Frank. “However, our golden rule is that English must be spoken at all times. This way, the members learn because they simply must- much as they would have to without the Shed. The difference is, we’re a friendly, safe space, where they can ask questions.”

Timber & Timberframe

“It’s also important to us that SMARTPLY is a local Irish manufacturer and brand. As a company they’re a big local employer and their ethos of supporting their community reflects our own.”

Why SMARTPLY OSB? “The members may want to learn joinery when they come here; they also may not,” said Frank. “The point of getting them all to participate in joinery as a group is that it’s an activity where they work with their hands, where they will need to communicate with one another to make a group project work. New skills are learned along the way. “SMARTPLY OSB has helped us bring the team together in that it’s a strong, structural material that is both hardwearing and cost effective for the members to practice with. SMARTPLY OSB is a strong, quality material and being very close to the SMARTPLY factory here in Waterford, we are luckily able to source more directly from SMARTPLY fairly regularly.

SMARTPLY OSB has also proven ideal for this application in that it is manufactured with zero added formaldehyde, making it one of the safest OSB panels to cut and work with by hand, and is sustainably produced.

Life after the Shed After 30 hours participation in the Shed activities, Frank and his management team are able to better understand members’ abilities, their interests and what they find challenging. “After getting to know the members, we are able to use our connections within the community to secure appropriate work-based courses for them in their chosen trades, or tutors to teach programming, MS Office and computerised accounts. In the past, members have studied anything from forklift operation, barista training and hairdressing to painting and decorating, photography and horticulture.”
