Ishida Provides Ideal Solution For Salad Weighing Ishida technology is helping to ensure the fast and accurate weighing of Mâche, a traditional French salad product from the Nantes region, into thermoformed trays. Leading co-operative AOC (Agro Ouest Conditionnement) has installed two of Ishida’s latest advanced CCW-RV multihead weighers at its plant in Saint-Julien de Concelles. The 14 head weighers, incorporating five litre hoppers, are operating at speeds of 70ppm for 150g trays. The weighers feature Ishida’s innovative C4 material on all contact parts. This prevents leaves from sticking to the contact parts, thus maintaining a consistent product flow.
10 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
In addition, the weighers’ vibrating dispersion table, as opposed to the more traditional rotating cone variety, significantly enhances the dispersion of the product to help maximise throughput. Ease of operation is another key benefit of the weighers as Chantal Gourichon, AOC’s production manager explains: “The software is very user-friendly and allows me to easily save different programmes for fast set-up and changeovers.” In accordance with AOC’s high hygiene standards, the weighers are cleaned daily with compressed air while parts are easily dismantled for a regular full wash.
Ishida weighers have been an essential part of AOC’s operation since 2010 when the company purchased its first two reconditioned models. “We operated these alongside two existing weighers from other suppliers and I was really able to see the difference the Ishidas made in terms of precision, speed and quality,” comments Alain Jussiaume, AOC’s co-managing director. “During CFIA in Rennes, therefore, I didn’t hesitate to trust again in Ishida by buying two brand new CCW-RVs.”
He adds that the new weighers’ speed and accuracy will enable to AOC to further increase production in the future. Tel: 44 121 607 7700 Fax: 44 121 607 7740 Email: torsten.giese@ishidaeurope.com www.ishidaeurope.com

Instead of pre-mixed gases it is better to integrate a gas mixer into the packaging machines because of three reasons:
Homogeneity / Quality Gas mixers produce mixed gas of the highest quality and homogeneity.

The selection of the right device for you should be done individually considering criteria such as the amount of gas needed, continuous or discontinuous withdrawal, frequency of mixture change, expandability of the system, manual or automatic control of the system, digital documentation and much more. For this reason, the leading supplier WITT has a wide range of products and offers all available mixing technologies.

Next Generation Magnetic Separators For Foodstuffs And Powders At PPMA 2018 (Stand F62) Goudsmit Magnetics of Waalre (NL) introduces a new generation of magnetic separators. such magnets were fitted with two layers of thin (Ă˜25 mm) bars, the new design contains a single row of Ă˜50 mm thick bars. New measurement techniques, including simulations of magnetic fields and tests in the company's own test centre, have shown that this results in a higher separation yield. This is because the thicker bars remain in contact with the magnetic particles longer. An additional benefit is the reduced height of the magnet as a whole, which means
20 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
CLEANING The pneumatic magnetic bars simplify the cleaning process. The bars are slid out along a guide and, once outside the housing, the magnets are exposed by blowing them out of the bars. A plate then retains the captured metal particles, after which they fall into a collection tray. With its enormous magnetic holding power of 12,000 Gauss at the rods, the
alone is not enough to separate stainless steel particles. It is also of critical importance that these particles come into contact with the bars as they flow past. To accomplish this, the company can fit deflectors in the magnet, providing good control over the direction of product flows containing weak magnetic (stainless steel) particles. This ensures that the product always contacts the bars. Tel: +44 (0)7482983183 www.goudsmitmagnets.com

Precise temperature control for novel food production: NTC temperature sensors from Variohm EuroSensor ensure accurate modelling of food in the Procusini 3D food printer The Procusini 3.0 is a 3D food printer, recently launched in its third and revised generation with NTC temperature probes from Variohm EuroSensor.
The manufacturer, Print2Taste GmbH, was founded in 2014 as a spin-off company of the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences in Freising. Aimed at catering professionals, event-gastronomy and hotels, as well as specialist bakery and confectionery producers, the complete Plug-and-Play system consists of a printer, a portfolio of printable foods, a template library and the world’s first fully integrated 3D food printing web platform. At its heart, exacting temperature control plays a crucial role in the shaping of customised small batch food items or individual text and decorative 3D objects. The NTC temperature sensor from Variohm EuroSensor is used as part of the Procusini‘s temperature control throughout the printing process. The foodstuffs are supplied in cartridges as solid materials and melted in the machine’s heating block by precise pre-set temperature regulation to maintain a constant temperature during printing. This process is fundamental to the Procusini 3D food printer, as the ideal combination
22 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
of temperature and the various food formulas used ensures that the food is fluid and can be delivered through the print head. To maintain stability of the three-dimensional shape produced, the material assumes a solid consistency at room temperature. Variohm’s series II epoxy-clad NTC thermistors function as NTC resistorbased NTC thermistors, with resistance decreasing as temperature increases. Particularly suitable for temperature control and temperature measurement in electronic circuits, the thermistor accurately and proportionately tracks temperature variation. As part of its custom design service Variohm modifies its standard NTC thermistors for Print2Taste GmbH by extending and isolating the lead wires. With a measuring range of -40 ° C to + 125 ° C, they operate in a wide and practical bandwidth for the food industry. A dual print head version of the Procusini 3.0 has also been recently introduced
by Print2Taste offering the possibility to produce two personalized food items at the same time. The dual version is also equipped with temperature sensors from Variohm EuroSensor as part of its core tasks. Both machine variants offer automatic operation for efficient production without high personnel costs. Self-developed or stored objects in the data library can be sent directly to the printer with the customer integrating the smart device in their own Wi-Fi network. Variohm EuroSensor offers a wide range of position, force, pressure, load, and temperature sensor technologies. The manufacturer, distributor and supply chain partner provides complete sales and support for demanding measurement applications across industry, construction, agriculture, motorsports, research and more. The perfect set-up for change Röfix AG’s portfolio comprises around 200 different building materials, e.g. masonry mortar, renderings, paints, coatings and unbonded screeds. To make sure that the correct quantity of these materials gets to the customer safely and on time, the manufacturer places a special emphasis on filling, palletising and packaging technology. BEUMER Group provided an entire system to the site in Sennwald, Switzerland and integrated it into an existing building. The system can be flexibly adapted to the different materials, no retrofitting required. The individual system components are easy to maintain and operate reliably. This ensures high levels of availability and prevents downtimes. A mountain range, characterised by the summits of the Chrüzberg, Stauberen and Hoher Kasten, dominates the panorama of the extensive Rhine plains. Here in

Sennwald in the canton of St. Gallen, nature enthusiasts, hikers and bikers enjoy the forests, meadows and winding paths. The Austrian building materials manufacturer Röfix, member of the Fixit Gruppe, has one of its five Swiss locations in this picturesque town with its approximately 5,000 inhabitants. “We are manufacturing our entire product range here,” describes Josef Sennhauser, CEO of Röfix, Switzerland. “Among the some 200 different building materials are fine plaster, different types of concrete, masonry mortar, screed and adhesives,” adds plant manager Gerhardt Welte. “Each of these products has very different flow properties.” This can be a challenge. In order to remain competitive, not only the quality of the building materials is important, but “Manufacturers must also be reliable in getting their products to the customer on time,” Sennhauser emphasises. “One of
the most decisive factors for customer satisfaction is staying on schedule.” To achieve this, the Suisse subsidiary needed an adaptable packaging line that could quickly bag, palletise and then package the finished stack with a stretch hood. In the past it had repeatedly incurred downtime on individual machines and workers had to do extensive retrofitting on the line when products changed, which caused delays. Decision for the right partner Röfix’ experience has already been positive with solutions of BEUMER Group at some of their other plants. This is why those responsible turned towards BEUMER Group as a one-stop shop for filling, palletising and packaging technologies. “Not only do our customers look for reliability, we expect the same from our suppliers,” says Welte. The key requirements for the packaging line, besides adaptability, were mainly
economical operation, easy maintenance and extensive customer support. Both companies quickly agreed on the scope and schedule and the project was ready to begin.
Due to its modular design, the system can be easily integrated into existing lines. The added BEUMER bag placer and ream magazine make the filling system even more efficient.
Filling process: not too much, not too little Due to the wide range of manufactured building materials, BEUMER Group installed a BEUMER fillpac R filling machine that operates according to the air filling principle. The bags are weighed during the filling process. The BEUMER fillpac is equipped with an electronic calibration-capable weighing unit.
Servomotors automatically, precisely and energy-efficiently drive the application unit and the suction gripper.
It ensures that the bags are always filled with the same amount of material. A special software enables filling spouts and scale to constantly compare weights. By using ultrasound to seal the bags, a very clean and efficient technology, the system can ensure optimal results. It also avoids the accumulation of material around the valve.
“The BEUMER bag placer can be easily adjusted to other bag formats by the user. This increases the system’s flexibility,” explains Denis Sielemann, Senior Sales Manager, Building Materials, at BEUMER Group.
The gripping and placing system takes the bags from the stack and applies them safely on the filling spout. 1,200 bags per hour can be applied like this with high precision. 1,800 bags are possible by adding an extension.

Memory Lane Cakes Creating Creamy Success with Boone Mixers Market-leading Memory Lane Cakes in Cardiff, part of the Finsbury Food Group, have replaced old mixing equipment and expanded production capacity with new rotating discharge Horizontal Helical Blade Mixers (HHBM) from John R Boone of Congleton, UK. The HHBM mixers are being used to produce a wide range of cake batters, buttercream fillings and toppings that find their way into branded and own label cakes sold in the majority of the UK’s major retailers. It isn’t easy, keeping pace with the changing tastes of the British sweettoothed consumer, and the leading supermarkets have a lively programme of product development to continue to excite the shopper with new styles and flavours of cakes. So much so, that Memory Lane have more than a hundred different recipes for buttercream fillings and toppings, and that’s before you even get to the batters that are mixed for the cakes themselves.
28 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
In production terms, the ‘creams’ present more challenges than the batters. In a domestic kitchen butter would typically be warmed before mixing, but under factory conditions a mixer has to cope with butter in 5kg blocks being added at 8-10ºC. Memory Lane also produce ‘ganache’, a mixture of around 60% chocolate with 3040% cream, which also present the same issues of quickly ‘conditioning’ the mixture to a homogenous, smooth paste. Memory Lane is a very well established company, and many of the mixers on site were more than 30 years old. Paul Riley, Head of Engineering at Memory Lane, wanted to bring the mixing process up to date and looked for a company who could supply mixers cost-effectively and who had a good track record in supplying equipment for this application. Following discussions, John R Boone recommended a Horizontal Helical Blade Mixer (HHBM). Paul Riley said: “We contacted John R

Boone and we took a mixer on trial. We tested it on every type of mix we make because it mixes in a different way from the ‘lift and throw’ type we had previously”. He went on “We found the Boone mixer to be very quiet and stable in operation compared to the older types.” Mixing times are around 3-4 minutes depending on recipe. The HHBM features four mixing blades forming a double interrupted spiral that create a criss-cross material flow and the low-speed motor results in rapid, efficient mixing. The ‘short and tall’ mixer shape combined with the omega shaped shell ensures all the mix is entrained by the blades. The ability to clean the mixers thoroughly between batches is very important, and JR Boone HHBM mixers excel here. The patented mixer arms minimise adherence of the mix, and the rotating trough discharge provides a complete discharge of the mix. As Paul Riley observes: “The Boone mixers are easy to clean, easy to wash down. Once they have been washed they look like a new machine”. The control panel HMI features a simple interface using a hygienic, easily operated colour touch screen and holds all the recipe data, including mix times and order of addition. The system has the capability of being integrated within a factory wide control system although presently the recipe data is stored on a memory card and downloaded as required for the seasons production. The results have clearly been to Memory Lane’s liking, with six JR Boone HHBM mixers already installed and a seventh on order. As Paul Riley put it: “Robust, designed well and easy to work on”.

Sig Leads The Industry With 100% Renewable Energy – Electricity And Gas – For Production Worldwide SIG is the first in the industry to produce all its packs using 100% renewable energy – electricity and gas – at production sites worldwide. By effectively eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from production, this represents a major milestone on SIG’s journey to go Way Beyond Good by contributing more to society and the environment than it takes out. SIG has met its 2020 goal to source 100% renewable energy and Gold Standard CO2 offset for all non-renewable energy at production plants two years early. The company made the switch to 100% renewable electricity in 2017 and is now sourcing renewable alternatives for the remaining energy used in production that comes from natural gas. SIG is purchasing biogas certificates that are certified to the recognised GoldPower® standard to offset 100% of the natural gas used at its production sites as of 1 January 2018. Arnold Schuhwerk, SIG’s Global Category Manager for energy procurement, said: “We achieved a big milestone last year by securing 100% renewable electricity for production. Sourcing renewable alternatives for gas was even more challenging because the market for renewable biogas is not yet well established.” With no viable option to source renewable biogas directly, SIG is sourcing it indirectly instead by supporting projects to construct and operate waste-to-energy systems in China, Thailand and Turkey that capture gas generated at landfill sites and use it to produce renewable energy. Landfill gas from decomposing waste includes large amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
30 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
Preventing this gas from escaping into the atmosphere helps to avoid harmful climate impacts. The projects are certified to the GoldPower® standard which verifies that they will not only deliver measurable greenhouse gas emissions reductions, but also create benefits for local communities, such as air or water quality improvements or job opportunities. “We are supporting projects that capture harmful greenhouse gases from landfill and convert these into energy,” said Schuhwerk. “We chose the projects because they are certified to a recognised standard to make sure they have a positive social impact as well as supporting environmental savings.”
All other remaining greenhouse gas emissions from production sites, such as small amounts released in the printing process, are also being offset to completely eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from production. The switch to renewable gas will save an estimated 28,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions per year. This will make an important contribution towards SIG’s science-based targets to cut Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 – and by 60% by 2040 – from the 2016 base-year. By reducing the climate impact of SIG’s solutions, this latest step to go Way Beyond Good will also help customers cut the lifecycle impacts of their products and meet their own sustainability goals. www.signals.sig.biz/going-for-gold/
The new iwis website is online!

NSK Molded-Oil bearings offer long life at food plants In the food industry, comprehensive cleaning regimes are commonplace as companies look to meet stringent sector requirements on hygiene. However, such practices can prove detrimental to production line components, not least the bearings that provide motion in critical machinery, equipment and systems. Here, spraying with hot steam, high-pressure water jets or very strong cleaning agents can cause two principal problems: foreign objects entering the bearings; and lubricant being washed out
34 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
of the bearings. For these reasons, NSK offers a comprehensive range of MoldedOil bearings that is purpose-designed to deliver extended operating life in harsh food industry environments. The lubricant within Molded-Oil bearings is durably incorporated inside a stable carrier medium, namely an oil-impregnated polyofin resin. This type of lubricant cannot be washed away by steam or liquids, and prevents contamination from entering the bearing.
Moreover, as the carrier only releases the lubricant slowly, sufficient lubrication is maintained over a long operating period. A wide range of Molded-Oil bearings is available, including deep groove ball bearings, spherical roller bearings and tapered roller bearings, in several product series and in special forms such as housed bearing units. The range also includes Molded-Oil bearings made of stainless steel.
These advanced products are suited to a broad range of food industry applications, where many manufacturers of machines and systems install Molded-Oil bearings as part of the original equipment. However, they are also ideal for retrofit applications. A case in point can be seen at a British food manufacturer, where the standard deep groove ball bearings in a seven-track conveyor system were only lasting for a period of four months. The reason was water penetration within the bearings during daily washouts, which resulted in costly maintenance work and damage to the conveyor belts. Each time there was a failure, the company had to endure downtime of 24 hours, creating a considerable dip in productivity. After inspecting the bearings, NSK recommended using stainless steel bearings with Molded-Oil lubrication and DU seals on both sides.
Subsequently, bearing operating life increased three-fold, to 12 months, while bearing-related maintenance costs (including downtime) were reduced by more than ₏52,000 annually. The story was similar at a manufacturer of frozen pizzas, where failures were being experienced every four weeks on the belt tensioner serving one of the company’s food conveyors. Regular cleaning of the production line with water had led to corrosion. Moreover, the grease lubricant had been washed out of the bearings, and the seals were damaged. NSK inspected the application and again recommended the use of Molded-Oil bearings made from stainless steel. This resulted in a significantly prolonged operating life, plus annual cost savings of approximately ₏15,700. Elsewhere, the bearings of belt pulleys within the cake-cutting machines at a large bakery were failing on a constant basis.
FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk 35
Each year, approximately 20 sets of bearings had to be replaced due to failures every 4 to 6 weeks. After analysis by NSK, it emerged that the primary cause was water and dust infiltrating the bearings. NSK therefore recommended replacement with Molded-Oil bearings. A test was run and the operating life of the bearings increased to 26 weeks. This significantly boosted the productivity of the manufacturing line, helping the user to save approximately €9,400 annually in maintenance and downtime costs. In a final example, a vegetable processing company had installed a biogas plant in order to ferment organic waste from production and transform the resulting methane into electricity and heat for selfconsumption. However, problems had been found with the rotary screen, which filters-out coarse and non-fermenting material prior to the fermentation stage. Failures were occurring repeatedly in the bearings of the rotary screen and disrupting the overall operation of the
36 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
biogas plant. Every six weeks on average, the deep groove ball bearings with contact seals had to be replaced. Each rotor has two bearings and there are two rotors per rotary screen. Replacement time was one hour each. Experts from NSK found that the breakdowns were caused by contamination penetrating the bearing raceways. The customer subsequently followed NSK’s recommendation to install Molded-Oil deep groove ball bearings made of stainless steel with DU seals on both sides, a move that has led to far fewer replacements. This yet again confirms one of NSK’s “rules of thumb”: in applications where the environment is contaminated by moisture and dust, the service life of Molded-Oil bearings in stainless steel is more than twice that of bearings with conventional grease lubrication. pilath-m@nsk.com www.nsk.com

Endless Piston Principle The progressive cavity pump forms the base of the barrel emptying systems from ViscoTec. It belongs to the group of rotary displacement pumps and is based on a volumetric pump technology. The operation is like an endless piston, which feeds the product from the suction side to the pressure side and thereby builds up a difference in pressure. The interaction of an eccentrically moving rotor and stator results in a feed and dosing characteristic that corresponds to that of an endlessly moving piston. Due to the dosing geometry, a constant volume is always fed proportionally to the rotation angle per revolution. The feed direction is reversible by reversing the direction of rotation. The volume is therefore clearly defined via the degrees of angle. To summarize, it can be said that the barrel or tank emptying from ViscoTec has many advantages. In addition to easy handling, the hygienic emptying of the mixing tanks should be highlighted. ViscoTec emptying systems offer the perfect process-reliable solution for the filling of pastries and doughnuts. mail@viscotec.de www.viscotec.de

Simple in design and operation, fully portable and castor-mounted, the TTe is highly convenient to use. It features a five-minute tool changeover, a simple and accurate film-feed system with an easy film route, and a maintenance-friendly robust construction. Its ‘Auto-Tool’ feature means that, at the touch of a button, it automatically locates and connects the tooling to machine functions, including all MAP functions. Another key benefit of the Proseal TTe is its high degree of accuracy. The machine provides accurate temperature and seal pressure control, as well as an automatic seal operation with a precise seal dwell time. The TTe tray sealer also offers exact temperature and seal pressure control, and a high-accuracy tool alignment system that provides an extremely consistent sealing or film-cutting relationship with the tray flange profile. As with all Proseal tray sealers, the TTe features a food industry-approved hygienic construction and wash-down protection, as well as full Category 3 guarding.
“With every new machine we release, we aim to take performance and usability to an-other level,” comments Steve Malone, Proseal’s Director. “It’s exactly this focus on con-tinuous growth and improvement that recently led to our Queen’s Award. “The flexibility and ease-of-use of our new TTe gives smaller food manufacturers the ideal solution to both their current and future production requirements.” Email: info@prosealuk.com Website: www.proseal.com

New Food And Beverage Leak Detection System Ensures Seal Integrity For Every Package Emerson’s Rosemount™ CT4215 uses laser technology to detect leaks, reject defective packages with no production slowdown
In response to industry demand for increased quality in food and beverages at every level, Emerson has introduced the Rosemount™ CT4215 Food and Beverage Leak Detection System. The Rosemount CT4215 is the first quantum cascade laser/tunable diode laser (QCL/ TDL) continuous, inline detection system designed to help assure quality and safety, maximise production volume and decrease product waste for food and beverage products. The Rosemount CT4215 tests the seal and integrity of every bottle or package on a production line, detecting leaks at a sensitivity as low as 0.3mm and automatically rejecting any defective bottle or package without slowing down production. This is in contrast to the traditional practice of testing occasional grab samples, which can leave a manufacturer vulnerable to low quality, unsafe food or beverages, reduced profitability and damaged reputation. “In an industry being driven by an increasing consumer awareness of freshness and safety, manufacturers need solutions that allow them to assure these qualities while maintaining, or even increasing, efficiency,” said Peter Watmough, global leak detection product manager, Emerson Automation Solutions. “The Rosemount CT4215 provides packagers with an easy-to-install, easyto-use assurance of freshness and safety. For the first time, food and beverage packagers can measure every package and bottle for leaks without having to compromise their production speed.”
50 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
The Rosemount CT4215 installs directly on the food or beverage production line in a compact, self-contained unit. A wide variety of customisable sampling heads are available for any package type including trays, pouches, bags, bottles and boxes. The patented QCL laser technology measures CO2 and other gases used in food and beverage packaging. A high-flow vacuum pump draws air from around the package or bottle and delivers this air to the measurement cell. If gas from a leaking product passes through the measurement cell, it will absorb some of the laser light. Less laser light reaching the detector means there is a leak. Any leak detected will trigger rejection of the package or bottle. The system requires
few consumables, is low-cost to operate, and needs only regularly scheduled maintenance. It is easily installed on both new and existing production lines. For the first time, food and beverage packagers can assure that every package leaving their facility is of the highest quality and can eliminate the returns and penalties associated with defects, while enabling any production issues to be identified and resolved within minutes. According to Watmough: “The Rosemount CT4215 brings any food or beverage packaging facility up to current consumer and supermarket demands quickly.” More information on the Rosemount CT4215 can be found at www.Emerson.com/RosemountCT4215

Interim Managers Are In Demand!
Jarvis Johnson, the heritage brand in Technical Food Recruitment, have had a busy summer placing Interim Managers, not just eating popsicles to cool us down! We’ve seen a growing trend for companies needing part-time support in Technical, Specifications and Quality Assurance. We’ve been able to support a number of small, growing companies who have needed assistance preparing for BRC Audits, for post audit corrective action implementation or help to clear a specifications backlog. The reasons clients need interim support tend to follow a common thread; often they need interim support whilst they recruit, they
may have a project or specific piece of work to complete to a deadline or perhaps they have sickness / absence to cover. However, we’ve had a few slightly more unusual requests recently, including… •

NORD DRIVESYSTEMS at iba 2018 Represented for the first time at iba in Munich, from 15 to 20 September 2018, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS presents its hygiene-friendly drive units for the bakery industry. The lightweight, corrosionresistant drive units, smooth motors, frequency inverters and motor starters in washdown-optimised cast aluminium housings provide an economical alternative to stainless steel geared motors due to their nsd tupH surface treatment. Agitators, conveyor systems, weighing and filling plants or packaging machinery: NORD DRIVESYSTEMS offers efficient and hygienic drive solutions for the bakery industry. The manufacturer’s innovative inverter technology guarantees high positioning accuracy and reliable implementation of dynamic sequences. The drive units can be controlled individually in order to regulate, for
56 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
example, the kneading and conveyor speed, to prevent blockages or control the dough process. Due to their modular structure and their plug-in capability, the drive units are also service and maintenance friendly. Corrosion protection in demanding environments For use in demanding environments, such as the bakery industry, NORD has developed the outstanding nsd tupH anticorrosion treatment for aluminium drives. With this process, the material is hardened below the surface. Due to an electrolytic process, a protective layer is created, which is permanently bonded with the substrate material. This way, aluminium becomes similarly corrosion-resistant to stainless steel. The drives can easily withstand contact with a great variety of aggressive media or high pressure steam washing.
An economical alternative with many variants nsd tupH drive units are a robust and durable alternative to painted geared motors or stainless steel drive units. The nsd tupH treatment is available for all NORD aluminium products, unlike stainless steel drives, which are only offered in a small number of versions. For nsd tupH aluminium drive units, all DIN and standard components, including drive shafts, are made from stainless steel. The fanless smooth motors do not spread germs and run very quietly. They are available as synchronous and asynchronous motors and fulfil efficiency classes IE2 and IE3 (asynchronous motors) and IE4 (synchronous motors). NORD also offers the drive units in ATEX versions. www.nord.com

Unipak Pail Is Natural Choice For Yoghurt
Romanian dairy producer Prodlacta Brasov has appointed RPC Superfos as an additional supplier of plastic packaging. The company chose RPC Superfos because of the quality, service, delivery times and commercial solutions that it offers. Prodlacta Brasov’s natural yoghurt and sour cream products now come in two sizes – 1.18 litres and 5 litres – of the round UniPak pails with plastic handles, as part of a three-year deal. Available in versions containing 12%, 15%, or 20% milk fatness, and aimed at both the retail and foodservice sectors, they are already selling well in Romania, as well as being exported to Moldova.
60 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk
Taking RPC Superfos on board has been a positive experience, according to Liliana Andriuc, Purchase Director at Prodlacta Brasov: “We keep our finger on the pulse and appreciate working with suppliers who meet our needs. We are clearly satisfied with RPC Superfos. The straightforwardness and our open discussions are valuable points in our business relationship.” One of the most extensive ranges in Europe, with a wealth of shapes and sizes for customers to choose from, the UniPak pail from RPC Superfos keeps costs down through the fact that several sizes of it match each lid diameter, meaning brands
only need to stock one lid for a range of sizes. Tamper-evident and liquid-tight snap-on lids are standard features. A further benefit of the UniPak pail is that, once the product is empty, householders and commercial customers can benefit from its flexibility by using it for other purposes multiple times over, as it is microwave-, dishwasher-, and freezersafe. www.rpc-superfos.com

In this way the customer is able to specify its exact system requirements and together Heason and Mecelec will provide a total machine solution with no limitation or compromise in the scope of design, manufacture, commissioning and support. Generally, Mecelec would project manage large-scale and plant automated solutions for production and/or test systems with Heason taking the helm for motioncentric projects such as single machines. However, both companies would be involved throughout, contributing its own area of expertise for an optimised solution that both meets and exceeds the technical and cost requirements for the customer. This new initiative will enable Heason an enhanced supplier partnership role by directly supporting Mecelec’s customers throughout the design and manufacturing process for full-scale automation projects whilst Mecelec would then fulfil a similarly close support relationship with the customer where Heason heads the project. In both cases, customer support
will continue into the commissioning and life-support phase. Mecelec director Neil Pearce is looking forward to many more collaborative projects that the Build Partner alliance will yield, “Whilst the collaboration is fairly new, we are already progressing on a number of important projects and the benefits for mutual support are increasingly apparent – our design and production times are faster and we look forward to more projects in the future.” Jon Howard, Heason Technology’s managing director states his enthusiasm for the programme, “The potential benefits to our customers is full turn-key project solutions whilst Mecelec are provided access to a superior range of servo-based automation products with comprehensive technical and application support from Heason.” For further details about the Build Partner alliance contact Heason at sales@heason.com or visit www.heason.com. Hygienic design is an absolute must
Schmersal also offer ready-to-connect NBG mounting housings for the manmachine interfaces of food machines.
Manufacturing and operating food production machines involves complying not only with norms and guidelines on machine safety, but also with very strict hygiene and design requirements. This is why the Schmersal Group has developed a whole range of Hygienic Design safety products for this sector - from control elements and safety sensors to optoelectronic safety light grids. The Schmersal Group has developed the N-range specially for the food industry and other hygiene-sensitive applications, with the abbreviation “N standing for the German for food industry. This product range consists of a wide portfolio of control and signalling devices and a large number of accessories which comply with the principles of Hygienic Design. These include emergency stop buttons, mushroom push-buttons, push buttons, illuminated pushbuttons and lamp indicators, selector

switches, main switches and much more. Hygiene-compliant design means: The operating devices are designed so that no contamination can settle; as their geometry has no corners and edges, which allows them to be cleaned easily. As well as the aspect of geometry, the colouring of open sealing parts is also relevant. On the one hand, this allows contamination to be seen, while on the other hand, any parts of the seals which break off and get into the flow of food can be easily filtered out. Schmersal covers this requirement using the three colours of black, white and blue for virtually all foodstuffs to be produced. Based on the strict hygiene standards, especially for parts of food machines and peripherals which come into contact with the products, there are very strict requirements in terms of the degree of protection and cleanability of safety sensors, light grids, command devices and control elements. These ranges are
therefore at least IP69K and sometimes even higher. These switchgear devices must withstand a water jet of at least 80 bar and a temperature of 80 °C. The control elements of the N-range are also fitted with a special sealing system which is not only resistant to water jets and highpressure water in combination with high temperatures, it is also resistant to the particularly aggressive detergents used during the cleaning process. Schmersal is constantly expanding its N-range. Among the new additions are, for example, the 3-colour LED module ELDE.N, which provides the conditions for displaying three different notifications or control commands with a single standard signalling device. This enabled the designer to reduce the operating unit. The number of surfaces
The N program control elements – in the mushroom push button NDTP30 – were developed for the requirements of the food processing industry.
which are potentially at risk of soiling is also reduced. The reduced number of operating and display elements also saves costs and improves the operator's overview. A completely new development is the hygienic joystick switch of the NK series. The NK- joystick switches offer the machine designer completely new possibilities in machine design and machine operation. A special sealing concept enables the joystick switches to be installed completely open, depending on the application. This means that the joystick switch not only offers the high degree of IP69 protection for the front panel but also offers IP67 protection on the rear side – which makes the complex inner cladding of the switching contacts unnecessary. The command and signalling devices in the N-range from Schmersal are also suitable for use in clean rooms of air purity class 2 in accordance with ISO 14644-1 and hygienic areas up to GMP class C in accordance with EU GMP Annex 1. They have also been tested by the food and packaging testing and certification office of the DGUV for suitability for hygiene-sensitive applications. This means the control devices can be used, for example, in meat processing machines or machines which process other raw ingredients such as fish, poultry, milk or eggs.
As well as the devices in the N range, Schmersal has prepared other safety components, including safety sensors and opto-electronic safety products, for the specialist hygiene requirements of the food industry. These include contactless safety sensors which are easy to clean thanks to the smooth surfaces of the sensor and actuator and can also be fitted on a concealed basis. Depending on the requirements, these safety sensors are also tested and certified in accordance with food technology standards (Ecolab, EHEDG, BG test certificate, FDA, etc.).

For example, Schmersal has developed the BNS 40S safety sensors in a stainless steel casing and in degree of protection IP69K specially for monitoring safety doors on food machines. They are particularly suitable for use in hygiene and wet areas. This also applies to the safety light grids in the SLC 420/440/445 range, which are also made to IP69K degree of protection. Opto-electronic safety light curtains and safety light grids are particularly suitable for securing conveyor and feed systems on packaging machines. Numerous additional functions such as muting or blanking enable a differentiation between man and material, which means the material flow is only interrupted if a hazardous situation arises.

Ceetak provided Lamb Weston with a free on site survey and installed a free trial of the QPH seal technology; it was installed on one packaging machine to evaluate performance over a designated time period. Due to outstanding results, within months Lamb Weston had invested in the retrofit of QPH sealing technology on the remaining bagging machines across their whole packaging production line, and saw a significant percentage decrease in film use immediately. Vikki D’Averc, Continuous Improvement Specialist at Lamb Weston, said “We
have been extremely pleased with the results we have seen from Ceetak’s QPH sealing technology. Since the retrofit on our machines we’ve seen a decrease in film costs and spares. The quality of the seals and overall appearance of the packs has been impressive and we have seen a significant reduction in the amount of reworks required. Our operatives have reported positive feedback on the ease of use of the technology and we have seen increased productivity due to minimal maintenance and reduced downtime.” Alongside the superior seal characteristics of the QPH seal technology, the unique blade and anvil design minimises cleaning and maintenance – the special cutter design has no areas where product or film can escape or gather and therefore demonstrates exceptional standards of hygiene. The heat of the blade is carefully maintained and controlled; therefore film material is rarely burnt onto the equipment (as is common with crimp sealing jaws). This leads to longer service life, reduced maintenance costs and associated downtime on the production floor, as well as reduced costs associated with spares and consumable parts.
