idet toilet seats are nothing new, having been in widespread use for many years in the Far East where they are simply another piece of household equipment. All hotels and public buildings in Japan are fitted with them as are millions of homes. But until six years ago none were approved for connection to the water supply in this country. In 2005 PDS Hygiene saw the potential of bidet toilet seats. The main challenge was the important matter of compliance with British water regulations that require backflow protection for all sanitary equipment that is to be connected to the public water supply. PDS Hygiene carried out the design and development work necessary to obtain the approval of the water regulators. WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) approval was obtained in late 2006 and Bio Bidet was introduced into the UK in September 2007. Bio Bidet fits most conventional toilet pans, simply taking the place of the original toilet seat. Specialist

commissioning is not required; it is ready for immediate use and if the users move home, it can move with them. It is a toilet seat, a bidet and a dryer all in one and by definition a brilliant space saver. Bio Bidet allows users to wash and blow-dry themselves while remaining seated after finishing on the toilet. Touch buttons on a control panel enable them to activate and adjust the variable settings to suit their personal preferences for temperature and pressure-controlled washing and blowdrying operations. Economy settings minimise power usage while ensuring, with the aid of the system’s memory, that

Bio Bidet is always ready for use. There are two models available: BB-800 Prestige and BB-1000 Supreme. BB-800 has a fixed control panel on the side of the seat while BB-1000 has a remote control unit and the added feature of a deodoriser. Sanindusa can be found in the bathrooms of Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam

13/03/2013 15:37

The recently inaugurated Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam in Holland is equipped with materials of the Portuguese brand Sanindusa. This futuristic hotel, with a svelte 60 metre high silhouette and a diameter of 24 metres, has a façade all made of glass and the signature of the Benthem Crouwel architecture studio. Like the hotel itself, the bathrooms have the particular aspect of being round. The products chosen to integrate the bathing spaces, of this 4-star hotel, were the suspended sanitary facilities of the CITY line, the WCA washstands and originals, the BLOK wash-stands, the Tube line of brassware and the LUXE line hotel accessories. In a press release the company states that “we are very proud to be able to add this hotel too with unique features to its vast portfolio which already has some major work not only in the hotel business but also in other categories.â€? The Fletcher Hotel Amsterdam is located 20 minutes away from the city centre and the dining room allows you to see the panoramic views of Amsterdam. Can a kitchen have a soul? If you look at the designs of Paul Marazzi, the answer may be yes. Marazzi’s passion for design began a new approach to creating bespoke kitchens that are not only functional but also provide a focal point for a contemporary home. Small wonder why, ten years after Marazzi Design company’s inception, it won the Best of the Best International Design Europe Award 2010. Drawing on his Italian heritage, Marazzi developed a philosophy based on understanding artisans’ techniques of the past, then reinterpreting them using modern engineering and technology. the result is beautiful products and spaces that are wholly custom made for clients. These bespoke kitchens have become part of a repertoire of cutting-edge rooms that belong to a long list of satisfied owners. But the Marazzi library of work stands out not only for its unique design and innovation but also for its ability to influence the lifestyles of those who experience his kitchens. Marazzi feels that “a kitchen should have a soul and presence, transforming a room into an emotional experience, a celebration of family life and convivial living”. Marazzi likes working with fluid shapes inspired by nature. They allow him to do something very creative and individual, and they are peoplefriendly — no hard angles or corners to bump into, no rigid lines to conform to. “fluid shapes and organic and sensual designs have now become something of a trademark for me,” he says. Such concepts reveal an understanding of a client’s needs — not only in his preferred design and materials, but also in his lifestyle. So Marazzi adapts each design to take account of how the client likes to use and move around his kitchen. He turns his clients’ requirements into individual solutions that elevate the cook’s enjoyment and comfort in preparing dishes at home.

Page 14.indd 1

13/03/2013 15:43

A clue as to why a Marazzi kitchen is so special is seen in the Colosseo Oro, a limited edition series of 10 individually engineered kitchens presented in September 2011 at the 100% Design Show at Earl’s court, london. Based on the Best of the Best Award winning Colosseo design, the Oro is a refined, no-expense-spared version, which includes newly developed composite materials that form smooth radius central ‘island’ units. Metallic chameleon lacquer emphasises the dramatic curves, giving depth and definition to the surface. Finishes include 24-carat gold leaf. The Colosseo’s ‘no compromise’ futuristic design extends to four metres in diameter, removing the confining planes of wall-facing kitchens. It is a detached, fully integrated island with appliances positioned around the cook, ensuring that everything is close at hand. The circular design complements the natural twisting ergonomic movements of the body while preparing food. The outer circle of the island is a special area that invites friends and family to sit and chat while the chef whips up the meal, or just allows one to

immerse in the enjoyment of one of the most impressive kitchens in the world. Other finishes include crocodile embossed leather, metallic gloss chameleon lacquer, Swarovski crystal lights and Venetian inked gold glass. Appliances are by renowned manufacturers from around the world — Zaha taps, a collaboration between architect Zaha hadid and triflow concepts; Sub-Zero refrigeration and wine storage systems; ovens, hobs and warming drawers from Wolf ovens; Max fire custom-made steel extraction systems with boiled and chilled water delivered via gold plated Zip hydro taps. fisher and paykel make the drawer dishwashers, and worktops are sculpted by hi-MAcS@Solid Surface. The hallmarks of a Paul Marazzi kitchen can be seen in their bold vision, refined engineering and cutting-edge composites and materials. Add to this craftsmanship, bespoke design and practicality and it’s easy to see why the company has a growing client list and enjoys accolades from all over the world. And why many of his kitchens are now the favourite nook in the house.

Finishes include:

Crocodile Embossed Leather, Matallic Gloss Chameleon Lacquer, Swarovski Crystal Lights and Venetian Inked Gold Glass.

OR NEARLY four decades, Connemara Carpets, based in Moyard in Connemara, Ireland, has been hand-tufting the finest 100% pure wool carpets, area rugs and wall hangings in the world. Over the years our reputation has led to commissions for embassies, high-end hotels, private estates and luxury yachts. Our carpets can be seen in Slane Castle, Waterford Castle, (Ireland), Scone Palace, (Scotland), The Royal Palace, (Bahrain), The Corinthia Hotel Group (Malta and Tripoli), The Greenbrier Hotel (West Virginia), The Grand Hotel, (Mackinac Island), The Plaza (New York) to name but a small few. The possibilities in terms of designs, colour, sizes and shapes are quite literally endless and our design team is vastly experienced at interpreting and developing clients’ ideas. Connemara Carpets does not sub-contract and all of our commissions are executed by our own skilled workforce in Ireland. Our carpets are hand-tufted onto huge vertical tufting frames by our experienced artisans who have been refining their skill for over forty years. We can

Page 33.indd 1

produce seamless hand tufted carpet of up to 8m x 50m plus. Our quality is further enhanced by our specially selected blend of wools from throughout the world which is spun into yarns exclusive to Connemara Carpets. The standard pile height runs between 12 and 16mm deep – though even 40mm piles can be manufactured. Lasts 20 years plus even in high traffic areas. We can dye wool to match any colour and our dyeing process is environmentally sound with no residual waste. Our carpets have thermal insulation and sound absorption qualities - specially suitable for large rooms, halls, corridors, cinemas, performance areas and spaces with variable humidity. “Great workmanship, honest design and exquisite craftsmanship” - Sir Christopher Frayling (Former Chairman of the Arts Council of England & Wales) after his visit to the Connemara Carpets exhibition at the London Design Festival, Sept 2012. The Sculpture House FURNITURE BY ARTISTS

The Sculpture House launches this month, presenting its debut collection of artist-designed furniture. commissioning international artists to create functional, furniture pieces for cutting edge interiors. A new destination for furniture lovers, consumers and collectors.

13/03/2013 16:30

February 2013: The Sculpture House (TSH), founded by young directors Alex Chinneck, David Murphy and Richard Davies, launches online this month, presenting its opening collection of artistdesigned furniture. The new venture aims contemporary design by collaborating with an ever-growing, but carefully selected group of young International artists. With no design being limited in number, www.thesculpturehouse.co.uk offers a new destination for furniture lovers, consumers and collectors – a place where artistic inspiration meets function. Motivated by a belief that artists bring alternative attributes to a design process, The Sculpture House was originally conceived as an opportunity for artists to explore furniture design freely and without compromise. Recognising the important role that artists have played throughout the history of design, and realising that this energy continued to thrive today but without cohesion and focus, The Sculpture House has grown into a company that channels the diversity of artistic output into beautifully crafted, functional items. “We are bringing together a carefully chosen but broad spectrum of artists and

Page 35.indd 1

aesthetics under one roof — developing innovative output of contemporary art”. What began with a single exhibition in East London during the summer of 2011 has now widened to involve an International community of artists. While The Sculpture House currently works in close collaboration with 20 artists from Europe, Asia and the U.S, the restless young directors are not stopping any time soon. Whether it be scouring art schools for young talent, or approaching more established names directly, The Sculpture House is constantly exploring new creative relationships that will take the everevolving initiative forward.

“We select artists based on their extraordinary ideas, not their reputations.” The Sculpture House debut collection is available to buy online now at www. thesculpturehouse.co.uk. For details of forthcoming events and exhibitions, please subscribe to the e-newsletter.

Not-So-Expanded Polystyrene Chair in Design Museum Show A chair developed, designed and delivered by Silo, Jablite’s Designers-inResidence has been chosen to be part of the Design Museum’s Extraordinary Stories exhibition which has just opened and will be on show until 2015. The chair is made from NSEPS or Not So Expanded Polystyrene, a new variation of EPS (expanded polystyrene) developed by Silo who are based at the insulation manufacturer’s Belvedere site. A specially commissioned film about Silo and Jablite will also be shown. “We work with the same raw material that Jablite use to make insulation; but we handle it in a completely different way,” explains Oscar Wanless, one half of design studio Silo. “We do not preexpand the material and we use handmade textile moulds and our own steamer.

Page 38.indd 1

“After that the process is similar,” continues Attua Aparicio, the other half of Silo. “The material expands to fill our mould and after it has cooled we remove the textile to reveal a unique object – for the exhibition we created a chair.” Silo has been Jablite’s Designers-inResidence for just over a year and the relationship looks set to continue: “It is a great learning experience for us being connected with a manufacturer like Jablite. “Jablite works in large volumes and we are hands-on, but we are both looking for ways to innovate and improve what we do and that connection gives us a fruitful overlap in our conversations. “Jablite has generously given us studio space and free material, but even more importantly than that, this association with a manufacturer working with the

same material, is a constant source of new knowledge and inspiration,” adds Oscar. For Richard Lee, Jablite’s Managing Director, Silo is an interesting and stimulating part of the extended Jablite team, “Visiting Silo’s studio space is a refreshing experience, it is full of colour and strange shapes and I have huge respect for their boundless enthusiasm and energy for their work. “It is great to be in a position to lend a hand to a these two talented designers. Creativity and innovation are at the core of our business strategy. Having Silo on site gives all of us in Jablite the opportunity to step out of our normal routine and see creativity in action.” www.jablite.co.uk www.silonet.co.uk

MODEL: AFFAIR by Uwe Fischer Business means movement, which is why the furniture on which you do business should be just as flexible as the business itself. It goes without saying that the furniture also has to be exceptionally aesthetic and functional at the same time. In contract, the business collection from COR, you will find all of these qualities in consummate form. A fine example of this is Affair – a relaxed all-rounder that can be reconfigured endlessly to create seating islands or never-ending sofas, room dividers or seating corners, just as the occasion and purpose require. W&Co help drive sales at BMW Park Lane Following success with previous car showroom display projects including BMW Westminster, W&Co were invited to produce a range of light boxes for a new state of the art showroom in Mayfair, London - BMW Park Lane. A selection of illuminated and non-illuminated fabric face displays were custom made to showcase a wide range of classic and modern BMW models on display. The frameless, chrome finished units, many LED illuminated, compliment the high quality brand and create a stunning backdrop within the contemporary showroom space. One particularly large format Fabric Face LED light box, within the Motorrad display area of the showroom, reaches five and half metres high and spans two floors of the building! The lightboxes were chosen not only for their high quality build and frameless design, but also because they offer the client the flexibility to easily replace and/or reuse the dye-sublimation printed textile graphics. W&Co Fabric Face systems offer a front loading graphic change whereby a rubber lip easily pushes into the face of the unit by hand without the need for specialist tools or installation teams.

gpstudio completed flagship store of

discovery for The Whisky Shop gpstudio, the luxury retail design consultancy, has just completed a flagship store in the heart of Piccadilly for The Whisky Shop, fulfilling the brief of creating a truly different customer experience. The Whisky Shop is the largest whisky-only specialist in the country, with 20 shops nationwide. The new store, which opened its doors for the first time on the 22nd November, is their twenty-first opening. The design had two main objectives educating and informing the consumer, and conveying a sense of the skill and craftsmanship involved in the creation of the fascinating luxury product. Whilst it makes a strong statement, the new store ultimately aims to be welcoming and accessible. This guided the split of the space into three distinct sections; “show me”, “tell me” and “sell me”.

The first of these rooms, “show me”, showcases key whisky houses, distillers and product brands. gpstudio worked very closely with each of these groups on their design plans, including the houses and distillers Pernod Ricard and Whyte & MacKay, as well as product brands such as Chivas Brothers, Royal Salute, The Glenlivet and The Dalmore. In appreciation of the rich heritage and expertise of the product, the spirits are presented in the same way as a fine perfume.

where customers can choose from a vast selection of the most prestigious whiskies in the world.

The“tell me”room centres on the educational aspect of the consumer experience. This room explains the process of making whisky – how the flavours are created, the importance of the aging process, and how this impacts on the sensory experiences of taste and smell – as well as dispelling many of the common myths about whisky. The third and final room is a Library of whisky,

Stuart Naysmith, Partner at gpstudio, says, “It was clear that education and discovery was an incredibly important part of the customer experience, which is why it was so central to our ideas. We immersed ourselves in complexities of the product, and tried to incorporate what we learnt into the design.

Across all three rooms, timber, copper and glass have been carefully interplayed to ensure a contemporary styling that still gave a nod to tradition, referencing the heritage of the products sold. The latest display technology has been used throughout the store, with tablets to inform and educate customers about their choices.

We even designed bespoke neon angel wings that will hang in the Library, in reference to the whisky-making terminology of ‘the angels share’.” Andrew Torrance, Managing Director of The Whisky Shop, said: “Our vision for the new London flagship store was to raise the bar for whisky retailing by offering customers a new and unique whisky retail experience which is both luxurious and accessible at the same time.” “gpstudio brought a fresh and innovative approach to the design of the store, tapping into the heritage of whisky as a product whilst also challenging perceptions and ripping up the rule book of traditional whisky retailing. Their experience in catering for high end luxury consumers has been instrumental in the visual and experiential treatment of the space, bringing a theatrical quality to the art of retail.” For more information visit:

HARO presents the Longstrip in a new way Fascination for parquet in every single strip Up until now, naturalness, oiled surfaces and a rustic look were solely associated with Planks 1-Strip. Hamberger Flooring, Germany’s leading parquet manufacturer has now landed a real coup with its wood floor: Longstrips with the attributes of Planks 1-Strip, which can be seen and felt in every single strip. Relieflike textures, bevelled edges on four sides and natural oil which emphasizes the rustic character design a floor that creates a totally novel effect on the room. With this uniqueness and its higher value, the HARO Longstrips with their intensely textured surfaces are to stimulate the parquet market. Trade benefits in particular, as the Longstrip is still the bread and butter product, which is now receiving a new impulse. Healthy living, sustainability, naturalness: more than just mainstream concepts which are continuously increasing in importance for the end consumer. And this is where the new HARO Longstrips score, which are entirely treated with natural oil. The range is arranged in a way that expresses rusticity and a character of its very own through the relief-like textured floors with lively gradings, colourchanged surfaces and bevelled edges on four sides. The second

range features softer textures and calmer grains and lets furniture and interior decoration give a strong performance. Of course, the installation system Top Connect can be installed quickly and easily, even on underfloor heating. New Outside – Proven Inside These parquet floors, which are manufactured in a complex process, are produced from the trunk to the finished board at the Rosenheim headquarters. After all, the brand HARO particularly stands for quality assurance as well as a sustainable and environmentally friendly production. All HARO Parquet Floors are 100 % PEFCcertified, have been awarded with the national technical approval (‘bauaufsichtliche Zulassung’) and the Blue Angel. The new HARO parquet range celebrates its premiere on the trade show BAU in Munich in January 2013. The sale also starts at the beginning of next year. To accompany the market introduction, HARO provides an extensive marketing package and supports the sale through print and online services. On top of this, there is the benefit of a strong brand name.

With every single strip the relief-like HARO Longstrips express the charm of Planks 1-Strip.
