Radisson Blu

Mall of America’s interiors unveiled by Graven Images The newly-opened Radisson Blu Mall of America (MOA), directly connected to over 500 shops and restaurants in one of the world’s biggest shopping malls, features stunning interiors by British designer Graven Images inspired by its unique retail environment; the character and history of its location in Bloomington, Minnesota; and the European design influence, integral to its parent brand’s DNA. This is the brand’s second ‘outing’ in the USA; its flagship Radisson Blu Aqua in Chicago opened in November 2011 and netted Carlson-Rezidor and Graven Images a prestigious Golden Key Award for its thought-provoking, contemporary interiors. The Radisson Blu MOA, a mere 15 minutes’ drive from CarlsonRezidor’s global headquarters, takes the brand’s reputation for pushing design boundaries one step further and demonstrates its parent company’s great energy and ambition. The result is a considered interpretation of context which stays true to the design-led ethos behind Radisson Blu, enhancing the experience of everyone who passes through its doors.

Retail therapy The Radisson Blu MOA greets shoppers seeking a respite from the hectic atmosphere of the Mall, and business visitors needing a stylish place to meet or stay, with the dramatic vision of the feature Krion wall which forms the backdrop to the entire first and second floor lobby spaces. Krion, produced by Porcelanosa in Spain, is by its nature a crisp material with a lustre akin to porcelain. For the Radisson Blu MOA, bespoke individual panels have been modelled into a massive multi-faceted sculptural installation which references a cool, pristine shopping bag and serves a similar function, setting the tone for the brand and also protecting and concealing the goods within. In this instance it shelters Firelake Grill House & Cocktail Bar from the bright lights of the main lobby spaces, so they become the little treats waiting to be discovered. Added drama is injected by lining the inside of the wall openings in bright red Krion. Nest hanging loungers from Dedon are suspended 40ft from the lobby ceiling and hover just above the first floor lobby, inviting exploration. Flanked by an escalator, a quirky lift and staircase, the unconventional two-level lobby provides a seamless navigation upon arrival, leading guests to not only to Firelake Grill House & Cocktail Bar, but to a state-ofthe-art fitness centre, 26,300 square feet of meeting and event space, and 500 guest rooms. A tiny series of windows puncture the façade at high level on either side of the hotel entrance courtyard, a further nod to its location close to one of the biggest shopping malls in the world. Designer Jim Hamilton of Graven Images was staggered when he learnt that the official number of annual visitors to the Mall of America is estimated at 40 million a year. “It made me think of fireflies”, he explains, “with their use of bioluminescence to attract mates or prey. When it turns from day to night, the second floor lobby lighting artificially illuminates the tiny windows to the street, bringing the fireflies to life.” Twin City of Lakes Graven Images’ designs for the interiors of Radisson Blu MOA were uniquely influenced by their response to the character and topography of Minneapolis. One of their very first design moves was to propose the introduction of a linking bridge on the front elevation of the courtyard adjacent to the reception. This was inspired by the skyway system that runs throughout Minneapolis, connecting most city buildings to allow the public to walk undercover in the harsh winter months. The MOA skyway serves a similar purpose, managing the flow of people within the hotel during its busiest periods. A double helix DNA pattern, acknowledging Minneapolis and St Paul’s unique status as ‘The Twin Cities’, is the inspiration behind the carpet pattern in both the main and junior ballrooms. Minneapolis is the Land O’ Lakes. Viewed from the air, the mix of lakes within the landscape inspired Jim to abstract these interesting and unusual ground patterns and colours to create the very strong vibrant rug that sits below hanging loungers adjacent to reception. When viewed from the second floor lobby, this gives a tiny abstract impression of the Minnesotan landscape. Jim explains, “Aerial views when you are coming in to land in different cities all over the globe have always fascinated me. I have taken many photographs through aeroplane windows of a wide variety of terrains. For example, the night time view of Chicago inspired the wall light installation in the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel.”

Attention to location-specific detail also influenced the choice of materials used within the hotel; the wood that clads the majority of walls, columns, beams and ceilings in the Firelake Grill House & Cocktail Bar was reclaimed from old barns throughout Minnesota, then cut and dressed into very clean, straight and regular planks. This change in detail has merged an interesting little corner of Minnesotan culture with a more contemporary palette of raw materials. Scandi and Scottish notes Many Minnesotan families and businesses can trace their background to early settlers from Scandinavia, where the Radisson brand also has its roots. The historical Scandinavian design influence behind Blu can be traced back to Arne Jacobsen’s iconic Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The world famous Swan and Egg chairs were designed specifically for The Royal in 1959 and both have been used in Radisson Hotels throughout Europe. The tradition is continued in the Radisson Blu MOA, with a unique colourful version of the Swan chair within the boardroom. The European influence extends to the ‘Gallery’, a concept first developed for Radisson Blu Aqua in Chicago. In Minnesota this has been extended to incorporate other concepts beyond the wall mounted art pieces. Individually designed or specified pieces such as the Nest loungers and collection of individual, iconic designer chairs in a variety of vibrant red materials that surround a bespoke 40ft Krion table in the second floor gallery area, stand alone as unique, relevant and interesting objects. A glimpse of the creative talent currently producing exciting work in Minnesota is available within the Gallery, where a mix of pieces procured locally are hung alongside a number by a surprising Scottish interloper, John Byrne. John Byrne hails from Paisley, another city with a mill at its heart but this time in Scotland, near Graven’s home city of Glasgow. The somewhat oblique Minnesotan connection is pop star Prince who is, as most Americans will know, Minnesotan born and bred. The iconic symbol of Prince’s Paisley Park Records company was the Paisley pattern, named for where it was milled in Scotland. As Jim explains “John Byrne’s style is fairly unique but sits very well within the larger group of art pieces selected to showcase local talent. There was a distinctly Scottish flavour within the Carlson and Graven Images design teams working on both Aqua and MOA. Two of our key clients on Carlson’s side are true born Scotsmen now residing in Minnesota. We have had great fun working with them to establish the Radisson Blu brand in the States.”

Gucci Range Exclusive to Cape Town and Johannesburg Boutiques FLORA The Cruise 2013 Collection sees the application of the House’s historic Flora pattern throughout the Gucci woman’s free-spirited wardrobe. Modernizing the print that was originally created in 1966 for Princess Grace of Monaco are intricate games of overlapping graphics including black and white outlines for an unfinished effect. This contemporary interpretation characterizes a new collection, including some of the House’s most iconic handbags, perfect for a sophisticated retreat. The print dates back to 1966, when Princess Grace visited Gucci’s Via Monte Napoleone store with her husband Prince Rainier. On that occasion, Rodolfo Gucci wanted to present her with a special gift and commissioned artist Vittorio Accornero to create a floral pattern for an original silk scarf. The response was an illustration featuring 43 varieties of flowers, plants and insects that over time has spurred multiple interpretations on a range of items – an iconic bouquet that Giannini revived as a print on an accessories collection for summer 2005. Today the Flora motif blossoms on natural canvas for a variety of signature handbag styles including the New Jackie and New Bamboo as well as the Boston bag and top-handle tote – with contrasting leather trim. Each piece evokes the eternal allure of the pattern with flowers from all seasons.

SOHO Characterized by the embossed interlocking GG emblem, both the new disco bag and the chain styles symbolize the alluring effortlessness of this season’s Gucci woman. A selection of functional shapes employs luxuriously soft calfskin, exotic python, and ostrich. The array of vivid resort colors includes sunflower, vintage rose, green herb, and sky blue, along with understated tones of maple, cream, and black. A modern object of desire, the disco bag holds a special place within the collection as a new chic statement. Perfect for any occasion from daywear to evening, this small, light accessory features an adjustable strap to wear over the shoulder. The proportions create a minimal, on-the-go style. A signature of the House, the tassel decorates the disco bag for an ultra-feminine touch. In larger shapes, the glamorous chain styles feature shoulder straps in a light gold finish. Ranging in silhouette from the hobo to the tote, these versatile bags encompass both function and elegance. Clean lines and striking details make each bag perfect to wear all day long. The Soho handbags are available exclusively at GUCCI Boutiques in Cape Town and Johannesburg in Southern Africa. Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6: In the history of Louis XIII, the extraordinary moment of a Rare Cask unveiling has only happened once before. Now by the grace of nature, for the second time, Louis XIII is delighted to reveal the spectacular Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6, discovered by the gifted Cellar Master, Pierrette Trichet. There will never be more than 738 decanters worldwide and each is hand engraved with an individual number. Every exquisite Louis XIII Rare Cask is made out of precious black Baccarat crystal - Rare Cask’s signature, created by 20 expert craftsmen, who have to execute the most challenging colour to which the art of crystal can aspire. A rose gold decor dresses the neck of the decanter, crowned by a black crystal stopper. www.louis-xiii.com

Like all Louis XIII editions, the Rare Cask has aged for up to a century in unusual ancient casks known as ‘tierçons’. However, it was when the cognac had reached its final phase of refinement that Pierrette discovered an astonishing exception to the precious spirit; she knew she was experiencing the spontaneous distinctive characters of a Rare Cask. The precise cause of a Rare Cask is still an entire mystery; although it is certain that there would be no Rare Cask without the extraordinary sensibilities of a Louis XIII Cellar Master like Pierrette, who possess a rare talent to uncover the exception when nature sees fit to present it. Pierrette Trichet is the fourth in a succession of the House of Rémy Martin Cellar Masters. Each in their turn has played their part in the century that made this Rare Cask – from the selection of the first young eaux-de-vie through patient decades of expert observation and blending that eventually married more than 1,200 eaux-de-vie. As Pierrette describes her emotions when she found Rare Cask: “As I tasted, I experienced that same

sensation, that moment of revelation and emotion that I remembered so well. All signs suggested that I had found another Rare Cask. ” The unique Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6 will be available exclusively by the glass from June in great establishments such as The Arts Club and 45 Park Lane (Dorchester Collection), and can be purchased at fine wine & spirit boutiques such as Harrods or Hedonism Wines for RRP £19,995 from September 2013.

INCREATION LUXURY BATHROOMS Paddy and Bruce’s Luxury Chiswick Bathroom

Bruce and Paddy came to us with a very unique request, they wanted a sanctuary in the form of a luxury bathroom to be built in the very top of their 4-story home. They wanted an extension in their roof which would be a place they could call their own. Phenomenally successful individuals, parents and world explorers they wanted a space to be at peace and to fully unwind with no interruptions‌ The full extension took 18 months, due to every council and planning hoop anyone could imagine having to jump through, but it resulted in the most incredible space the couple could have hoped for.

INCREATION LUXURY BATHROOMS Design & Plan Splitting the space into two to suit the needs of both Bruce and Paddy, we created a stunning curved wall. For Paddya cocooned bath area and for Bruce a full height bespoke glass shower unit with rain shower and steam room. Beside the bath sanctuary we installed an infa-red sauna specially designed for its Macassa ebony to keep in with the rooms design and help create a mammoth storage unit hidden in the curve that replicated that of the bath. Materials

The choice of materials for the kitchen was crucial to stress the industrial handles in matt nickel which did not stand out above its surrounding elements blending well in the furniture. The storage area stands away from the central island with medium tall units standing on an aluminium leg base. Resistant high capacity pull-outs, a stainless steel worktop and other elements such as the tap with spray rinse, the fridge or the freezer enhance the industrial look of the whole. www.logoscoop.com

gpstudio gives refresh to Asprey Bond Street store

gpstudio, the retail design consultancy with a specialism in creating and shaping luxury brand stories, has just completed a re-design of the Jewellery and Watch departments of British luxury goods brand Asprey’s flagship retail store on New Bond Street. A historic jeweller and luxury goods house boasting a rich tradition of craftsmanship and quality, Asprey has become an internationally renowned name synonymous with refinement and elegance. The brand appointed gpstudio to refresh their key in-store departments, as well as reviewing the definition and presentation of the entire brand. The refresh successfully brings together three generations of fixtures, inside one of the most recognised pieces of retail real estate in London. The designers carefully interplayed original Asprey antique pieces with the Foster + Partner designs to ensure that the new design retained the soul and credibility of the brand. Finishes of rich timber veneers, bronze detailing, leather work and hand-embroidered carpets bridge the gap between the heritage of the brand and its modern day conception. gpstudio was the lead designer, working alongside Office of Light for the lighting design and Goodman Hichens as the main contractor. The new design was unveiled for the first time on 8 April 2013. Gregor Jackson, Partner at gpstudio, says, “It was very exciting to be given the opportunity to work on such a prestigious retail space and we felt it was vitally important to carefully blend the mix of old and new.”

BATH IN FASHION Bath in Fashion 2013 drew to a close after packed week of activity highlighting the city’s fashion credentials and creating a great buzz on the streets. The programme included exhibitions, talks, catwalks and workshops as well as Saturday street events. This year 150 businesses collaborated to put Bath firmly on the map with the world of fashion. Sarah Mansfield Chair of Bath in Fashion said “we were delighted with the response to the programme of events. It is hugely flattering that so many talented individuals from the world of fashion such as Roland Mouret, Julie Verhoeven, David Downton and Liberty London Girl give their time to Bath in Fashion. When you are asked every day what will be happening next year, you know it is a success. “ Andrew Cooper, Bath Business Improvement District (BID) Manager said “Bath in Fashion is a Bath Business Improvement District (Bath BID) initiative. Following the second coldest March on record, retailers, and particularly fashion businesses needed as much support as possible to drive footfall and raise awareness of Bath. Bath in Fashion achieved this through a superb programme of events, talks, exhibitions and street activity.

Retailers have already reported an uplift in sales by participating in the street events and in store promotions. As Bath in Fashion has burgeoned with the strong base of BID funding, businesses can now see the benefits of a model that allows for them to engage and develop their own business. What the Bath BID has demonstrated through Bath in Fashion is the strength of working collectively as a city for mutual benefit. Without the sponsors, funding of the Bath BID coupled with the enthusiasm and in kind support of businesses in Bath, events like this would not happen, and in the current competitive and challenging economic climate, being complacent is not an option.”

of Beau House is elegant and refined, using tonal colours, myriad textures and beautiful natural materials including: Patinato Veneziano polished plaster, oak flooring, Whistler leather wall panels, Jura Blue Grey stone, hand-painted Fromental wallpaper and bronze metal trim detail throughout. The property also features a green wall which runs the height of the Townhouse – an organic and fluid pattern of lush green, pale pink and white flowered evergreen plants – while a series of balconies and winter gardens bring light and beautiful views into its rooms.

The Chelsea Townhouses offer the best of London living. Perfectly situated among some of the Capital’s most iconic landmarks (the V&A, the Royal Albert Hall and Hyde Park) and an array of local bars and restaurants, residents will find themselves ensconced in Chelsea’s village atmosphere. Lloyd Loom of Spalding Lloyd Loom of Spalding comes from a strong heritage within the furniture industry, using techniques learnt in the 1930s. Justly proud of its manufacturing, which still takes place in England, the company’s portfolio has expanded to include furniture, ideally suited for all areas of the home, including lounge and dining areas, kitchens and bathrooms, bedrooms, halls, garden rooms and conservatories.

L

loyd Loom of Spalding furniture has a reputation for comfort, strength and longevity; so much so, that every piece is regarded as an investment for the future, passed down from one generation to the next.

These “antiques of the future” sit in beautiful homes around the world. The company has an excellent record for innovation and design and provides superior craftsmanship, coupled with the finest possible service and value. The unique twisted paper and wire weave is made on the original looms, which is then applied to the finest steam-bent beech wood frames. This weave is available in a choice of 15 colours, as standard. These include arctic grey, bracken, brilliant white, clear, duck egg, espresso, fawn, honey, ivory, nearly black, nearly white, pebble, sage, signal red and tarragon. You can also choose any RAL or F & B colour, to suit your own interior. (Designers up and down the country love the huge colour range provided.) There is a choice of dining, side, sofa, coffee and tea tables to complement all the chairs, plus a selection of fabrics and

cushions. Customers’ own material is yet another option. The signature piece for 2013 is without doubt the new BOURNE chair, in both pebble and bracken. Its neat contemporary styling and square tapered legs makes it the ideal choice for use in the dining room and kitchen, as well as the conservatory. In the kitchen the ATHENE stool is the perfect choice for both classic and modern surroundings. Available in two heights to suit varying bar tops, you can choose whatever colour suits your interior best. There is also huge interest in the BELVOIR range, which was on display earlier this year at Interiors UK in a stunning mauve finish; whilst at the 2013 Ideal Home Show, the BELVOIR armchair was showcased yet again, this time in the award-winning house, styled by House Beautiful magazine, accompanied by the Burghley Tea Table, both in Brilliant White. Royal 5* Suite at Heathrow Airport Katharine Pooley unveils the new design of Heathrow’s Royal Suite, creating the utmost in discreet, luxury travel for the jetset traveller

Katharine Pooley proudly unveils the new design of the Royal Suite at Heathrow airport, a coveted commission from BAA, to create a glamorous yet understated environment for its most discerning visitors. The lounge is reserved for those travelling by private aircraft, demanding the utmost in discreet, relaxed travel. The service provided at the Royal Suite enables passengers and their guests to complete airport formalities from the convenience of a private lounge, bypassing the airport terminals with a direct limousine-to-aircraft service. Such comforts are accompanied by security-conscious details such as bullet-proof smoked glass to protect VIPs as they exit their vehicle and enter the building, and the ultimate luxury of their own private entrance to the airport.

Pooley has now undertaken the redesign of several BAA VIP suites and this project marks the culmination of her achievements at Heathrow. Major changes including structural alterations were undertaken this time to ensure that of all the lounges, the Royal Suite best reflects BAA’s impeccable service values. Exquisite finishes in navy, steel, gunmetal grey and fawn tones were chosen to create a layered effect, giving the room its calming, intimate feel. The periphery lighting dramatically highlights the contrasting textural wall finishes of state-of-the-art laser-cut slate panels and a thick-cut grasscloth in deep blue, greys and golds. The design is punctuated with large dramatic abstract art in complimentary washes of colour merging into a seamless but richly detailed interior.

Katharine Pooley said: “It is an honour to be asked to redesign the prestigious Royal Suites at Heathrow and a great opportunity to embrace and showcase the international influences within my work. I hope passengers will enjoy the opulent yet tranquil feel we have aimed to create in the suite.” Anita Newcourt, Heathrow VIP Services Manager said: “We appointed Katharine Pooley to redesign the Royal Suite as she understands the needs of our sophisticated guests and is completely in tune with the needs of our discerning clientele. Katharine has created a design that successfully balances the best in luxury with utmost comfort.”

Veneering is the defining part of traditional Cabinet Making Craft that separates Cabinet Making from Joinery. It is also that which allows the embellishment of furniture far beyond the limited scope of solid wood alone.

Our Services The majority of our production time is dedicated to the manufacture of bespoke veneered furniture components. We are experts at turning ideas into amazing projects. We work with everyone from huge Building and Architectural companies to private householders. Please have a look at “What We Do” and our “Gallery” to learn more. The main-stay of our veneering service is the production of bespoke flat and curved wood veneered panels. We manufacture these usually from either MDF or Plywood and occasionally from chipboard; edged with solid wood lipped edges and then overveneered with face and balancer veneers as appropriate. Our biggest projects so far have been for Architectural Veneered Panels, these have adorned the walls and ceilings, staircases and landings of entrance foyers, lobbies, hallways, and rooms of; Companies, Households, Hotels, Concert Halls, Hospital Wards and Cruise ships. Other bespoke veneered panel commissions are more frequently from Cabinet Makers, Shop Fitting and Joinery Companies, who require our specialised components for their projects.

Previews Latest Advance in Performance Seating at Salone Del Mobile

Ten years and more than 1.5 million chairs later, a successful design is transformed for today’s dynamic workplace: A Preview of Mirra 2.

As work evolves, people are more agile, shifting from individual to collaborative work in an instant. With all that motion, they need support that moves with them. In response, Herman Miller, Inc., the global leader in highperformance seating, announces its latest advance, the Mirra 2 work chair. Designed by Studio 7.5 of Berlin, Germany— the quartet of Burkhard Schmitz, Carola Zwick, Claudia Plikat, and Roland Zwick—it is built on the same principles as their best-selling original, but is completely redesigned from the casters up. The result is a leaner, lighter, more responsive chair moves as one with the sitter and dynamically supports even a person’s slightest movements, so important as people work more agilely than ever. In commenting on the design, the Studio 7.5 team, who prefers to speak with one voice, noted that the chair is “a reincarnation of Mirra. It feels reassuringly familiar because we maintained its soul and essential DNA, but we advanced the materialization and manifestation of this idea in virtually every aspect.” Mirra 2 is being previewed during the Salone Del Mobile in Milan, Italy, 9-14 April at Herman Miller’s National Design Centre showroom, 70 Corso Garibaldi. The chair will be available for purchase worldwide Summer 2013.

Organised by

One Hyde Park W

hen creating the interior design scheme for this 4,535 square foot apartment in One Hyde Park, Casa Forma’s focus was on practicality and functionality, whilst at the same time exuding the very best in bespoke luxury and elegance. The result is a sophisticated and timeless design, and a comfortable family home. The immediate focus on entering the apartment is the long corridor leading to the main living space, with its magnificent views of Hyde Park itself. Two features serve to particularly distinguish the corridor. Firstly, high-gloss sycamore panels add light and subtlety. And then, on the other side of the panel, an abstract map of the Hyde Park pathways – the bronze clasps and metalized panels and resin of which combine to create a subtle 3D effect. One of the four original bedrooms has been converted into a multi-function study room, which can also transform into a games room. The furniture is made from darkened solid Indian Rosewood in piano high gloss finish, and with the bespoke leather sofa able to convert into a large guest double-bed, this room can also easily be turned into a bedroom. The introduction of a Swedish dry sauna in the en-suite bathroom linked to the study room

was one of the most challenging aspects of this project. But thanks to Casa Forma’s strong architectural acumen, this small yet complex feature turned out to be an extremely successful addition to the property. The powder room has been clad in silver & goldleafed, treated with acid to create a tarnished effect for a more distressed and aged look. In the dining room, the bronze profile and glass joinery is framed by a subtly backlit tortoise shell and tiger eye mosaic, while exquisitely coloured brown glass chandelier pendants hang over the dining table. The interior design of the main living space focuses on maximising those incredible views of Hyde Park. Accents of bevelled glass relief on mirrors framing all the joinery add an Art Deco touch to the room. The modernist chandelier in the main living room is made from a collection of Brazilian rock crystals and bronze frame; the glow it emits visually increasing the ceiling height through its cut-outs. And at the entrance lobby, twin chandeliers designed with smoked quartz shards create a delicate quality of light, enhancing the ambience of the space. Through research, quality of materials, precision, and attention to detail all embodied perfectly in one property – making this Casa Forma project an outstanding example of considered, uncompromising and luxurious interior design.

EeStairs Rises to the 44th Level Design During the design phase of a project, EeStairs’ passion for staircases begins to shine. Regarding this project, we met together with the client and the architect to obtain a full scope of the design intentions. In attempt to provide clear interpretations of design, we provided a photo realistic rendering of what we proposed for this unique staircase. The client was verWy pleased with the rendered model, thus we proceeded with fabrication. Fabrication One of the key elements of this staircase is the stringer; it is a ribbon like structure that curves with the staircase as it travels upward. We fabricated this section using multiple plates to form the separate sections, and then grinding them smooth to make it into a single unit. Another main element was the mirror polish handrail system. The client specified an imitation of an existing handrail system that he had, so we took it upon ourselves to custom manufacture the handrail brackets to match. This was a very labor-intensive task, however, the result exceeded the clients’ expectations! Installation The client had a limited window for installation of the staircase, so with delicate coordination we were able to meet this deadline. The installation posed its own challenges. Each section of the staircase needed to be brought up the elevator individually. Keeping these constraints in mind each section was design accordingly. With a skilled team who pride themselves with perfection, we were able to supply this unique staircase, which the client was profoundly delighted with. www.eestairs.com

Hidden Benefits for Hotel Interiors

Powermatic® concealed door closers have become the designer’s favourite for creating attractive interiors in hotels, offices and other projects where appearance, ambience and comfort are paramount. Fitting neatly between the door and frame, Powermatic® is totally concealed when the door is closed and has none of the unsightly control arms and boxes that come with other door closers, ensuring that nothing interferes with the appearance of the door or interior and creating a more relaxed, less institutionalised, ambience.

Bespoke Designs Solutions specialise in exclusive decorative effects and finishes and advocated using Micro Cement in this situation which worked to great effect. Also at the same location a virtual reality wall of 21 sq. mts with a tolerance of a 0.5 mm was successfully achieved by adapting a 7 mt long sanding implement. www.plasteringtrainingcourses.co.uk www.decorativeplastertraining.co.uk www.decorativewalls.co.uk
