Cover Story THE ASTOR
78 86 Set in the Berkshire countryside, in the valley of the River Thames, The Astor has been created through restoration of buildings that originally formed part of ‘The Model Farm’ – built by Lord Astor of the historic Cliveden Estate, which can be seen as part of the stunning rural backdrop to the property. The restoration created a 11,420 sq ft home, with a combination of original structural components, but blended into a contemporary design. The interiordesign challenge was to create a fresh and vibrant lifestyle within the available space, retaining the dramatic impact of the property, providing astunning and luxurious environment for entertaining, using carefully selected fabrics for comfort and style.

This September sees the opening of the Staffan Tollgård Design Store on the tranquil docks of Grosvenor Waterside, Chelsea. Launched by Scandinavian interior designer Staffan Tollgård, the Design Store showcases a personally curated collection of the best and the bold of luxury contemporary design. The light-filled 3500 square foot flagship space is designed to provide a new kind of retail experience: personalised, calm and complete. The last decade has seen Staffan Tollgård Design Group take its place among the top interior design practices in the UK. Known for bold, creative and contemporary interiors, the decision to invest in a bricks and mortar store was born out of a belief that great design deserves to be seen and to be sold by designers that can tell its story. Staffan worked as a filmmaker before studying interior design at the Inchbald School of Design, and the importance of storytelling runs through every aspect of the practice’s work. Staffan explained that “As a group of designers we value the human behind the piece: the designer and the maker. That is why, in an increasingly digitalised world, we have invested in a showroom staffed by interior designers that understand the language of design, the pieces themselves and their place in a new story: that of the collector.” Unusually for a furniture and accessories store, everything in the Design Store is part of the Design Group’s story, and for sale and specification for trade and retail clients. They have partnered with a number of leading brands, including home automation specialist NV Integration who provide a cutting-edge view into the world of integrated home

technology. The poured concrete floor, barn-wood cladding, architectural lighting, and specialist wall finishes: every aspect of the store is part of the aesthetic that has made Staffan Tollgård Design Group an award-winning interior design practice.

The Design Store showcases the best of contemporary design from across the world. They are proud to be the exclusive retail showroom of Autoban, Stellarworks and Verden Linteloo in the UK, and to be the inaugural UK retailer of neri&hu, the furniture arm of renowned architects Neri & Hu. As well as furniture from some of the best manufacturers that the design practice has worked with in their projects, the Store will sell lighting, rugs and accessories. Staffan hopes that “whether someone comes to see us for a whole project, or simply decides on a beautiful vase or cashmere throw, our design store team has a wealth of experience to make sure that even the smallest decision dovetails with the story the client is telling with their home or gift.” When the store opens in September it will also have two world launches on display. The ‘belle’ light, designed by Staffan himself, for Italian light couturier Contardi, and the ‘Yi’ chair, by world renowned designer Michael Young, for EOQ Design.

Interior Design
A
s more and more buildings are being given a contemporary twist, the unity of interior design and architecture is a hot topic within the world of property development. Here we look at how the two can work in harmony and what inspires the interior designers behind some of the UK’s most successful projects. The architecture of a building offers a guide of how the building was designed and how its functions were intended. Although these would be clearly detailed for any newly erected buildings, for those that have been
around a little longer, new ways of living can inspire new ways of using a space, whilst at the same time inspiring an interior designer to retain the original charm. Often a projects forgotten architecture can be rich in inspiration, from uncovered sash windows and inglenook fireplaces to original mouldings hidden by paint, each can create a stunning feature or focal point for a room. In many cases, if the original features have survived time, it is believed that they should be respected and interpreted.
Kate Kingston of Kingston Shaw Interior Design has worked with a wide variety of buildings over the years, each with their own unique architecture. Here, she comments: “Personally I am hugely inspired by the Georgian era of architecture. The square rooms and high ceilings appeal to my love of symmetry. We specialise in contemporary interior design, however, as a team, we are always seeking to interpret historical trends in new and exciting ways.” Furthermore, elements of a building’s architecture can inspire a whole colour palette, from anything as simple as a rusted hinge on the exterior and a timber frame ceiling to the views that a
building can proffer. All these factors can create a myriad of simple and head-turning colours that craft a truly unique space. Kingston Shaw regularly use colour to bring a room alive: “I always use a little colour therapy when choosing an accent colour for a scheme. For example, orange is a great hue to use in an educational or study environment; it promotes learning and is fresh and exciting. This has worked perfectly in a room we recently designed which benefits from amazing sunsets, As such, I wanted to reflect the outside internally.”
Although you can use a buildings architectural backdrop as a palette to dress a room, more and more interior design involves using this as an opportunity to bring it into the new millennium. Elements of a building’s historical furniture and fabrics can be used, however, whilst deriving inspiration from the features that have been left behind, many interior designers see it as their role to interpret the next generation of imprints. Ideally the project is a representation of the client’s personality and living requirements. Kate adds: “A contemporary interior in a traditional backdrop is my favourite juxtaposition. I love to walk into a Georgian façade and be greeted by contemporary finishes and fittings. Good design will always marry well. That’s not to say there isn’t room for period interiors and exteriors living together.”
Good design should compliment any structural building, whenever it was built. Eclectic design that mixes contemporary and historical styles can work well, as long as it is done with wit and function in mind. So how do architects sit in the mind and work of an interior designer and who do they admire?.... Kate comments: “ I worship Mies Van der Rohe. As well as admiring his award-winning architecture, much of his furniture design creeps into my interiors as it is so well designed and always fits the bill. Renzo Piani is a living architect who makes my heart sing when I see his work. It makes me want to be a better designer and ensures that I always take time to listen to the architect. I would never mess with what I see as his perfection.”
And what kind of architecture makes an interior designer look to the skies?.... “My favourite building is the Empire State building in New York. I love its homage to excess, its intricate art deco decoration and the way that it has weathered with such success over the years. It is completely the opposite to what I admire in architecture and in my own style, yet it stands proud, evokes memories and is unashamed of what it is.

At Thomas Sanderson we pay as much attention to how our shutters operate as their finished look. You can tell how beautifully made Thomas Sanderson window shutters are simply by opening and closing them. Cleverly encased within each panel, our special Soss-style hinges enable each shutter to operate smoothly and quietly and ensure a precisely aligned fit within the surrounding frame. The tilt wands on each louver are also mounted to the side so they don’t obscure the view and screwed rather than stapled or pinned to each individual slat so they don’t rattle or shake. It’s this kind of attention to detail that will remind you every time you open and close your shutters of the quality, craftsmanship and care that go into everything we do.

Architect Mike Ford AR Design Studio, Winchester, UK www.ardesignstudio.co.uk https://twitter.com/ARDesign_Studio Builder Mike Jacobs Builders Ltd
Elm Court Hidden from view, behind the ordinary looking faรงade of a modestly sized semi-detached house in North London, sits an elegant piece of modern contemporary architecture. The recently retired owners sought to adapt the existing small and cramped property into their perfect home. Despite their North London site, they were eager to work again with the south coast based architects, having experienced an enjoyable and smooth design process on an earlier holiday home. AR Design relished the opportunity to reunite with an old client. The brief was to design a single storey extension at the rear of the existing 3 bedroom property, linking in with the original, whilst making minimal physical changes. The open-plan extension was to comprise of a new kitchen, new dining/living space, utility room, cinema room, WC and office area; with the aim to bring views of the garden and more light into the property. The team at AR are particularly interested in relationships between inside and outside space, between the man-made and nature. They could see the potential to completely revive the feel and functionality of this home within the tight site as a parameter for an interesting design approach. It completely transforms the feel and atmosphere of the existing property. The concept is firmly rooted in uniting the house with the garden and positively affecting the interior feel of the original property, whilst making minimal physical changes. The solution was to have a grey wall running through the entire home; from the front door through the original house into the new extension and out onto the garden to unite the original front with the new extension. This physical wall acts as an axis of movement, guiding you through the house, from old to new. It also draws the eye through the space and out to the garden providing a physical inside/ outside link. The wall breaks down as it dissects the contemporary

extension, defining smaller, more intimate spaces, whilst still retaining the feeling of togetherness evident in open-plan living. The flexible division of the space uses innovative arrangements of furniture promoting a multifunctional use of the space, such as the garden room which becomes an office through the implementation of a bespoke fold down desk. As the wall reaches into the garden it projects through the large glazed doors, which can be opened completely. These allow sunlight to flood through the open-plan space and filter down gradually into the original property, creating beautiful shards of light. A flush threshold allows the tiled floor finish of the interior to continue out onto the patio, creating a seamless link between inside and outside. We follow the wall over the patio as it steps down onto the earth where it finishes, revealing us to the garden and nature. The entire extension is highly insulated to improve the sustainability credentials of the house. In addition, an efficient fireplace is located centrally to the space for localised heating, with under floor heating running throughout the ground floor. This provides a comfortable and efficient environment to live in. The finished property retains its humble street appearance, yet is completely transformed from its previous gloomy atmosphere with the juxtaposition of the modern extension at its rear creating a light, airy and open living environment. It is now a perfectly working home bursting with traditional values, contemporary style and innovative design, all within a very modest sized property. www.ardesignstudio.co.uk

The company that really does know the best wood for your floors, walls and ceilings
Havwoods have been committed to supplying exactly the right wood to architects, specifiers and homeowners ever since 1975, and it's made them Britain's foremost wood floor company. They have an unparalleled reputation for providing quality products, excellent service and exceptional levels of expertise and they offer an enormous range with well over 400 products kept in stock! Whatever you have in mind wood-wise, the chances are you will find it here; you'll also find things you've probably never dreamed of. Oak, maple, walnut, pine, the exotics and bamboo, all feature alongside half a dozen other species; smoked, sawn and washed, with oiled and lacquered finishes in mosaics, chevrons, blocks, panels and planks of all sizes, up to and including giants almost half a metre wide. Best of all, they can all be supplied within days; but if you have a few weeks in hand there's another 500 or so products in the Havwoods' portfolio which are available to order. Known as leaders in their field, both technologically and aesthetically, Havwoods are continually researching new ideas and new trends. Recently this includes a huge expansion of their reclaimed range. Reclaimed timber looks stunning, particularly in contemporary surroundings, but it is traditionally difficult to fit and often involves a great deal of wastage. Havwoods' reclaimed timber is quite different. Solid reclaimed oak planks, blocks and chevrons are crafted to a regular width and thickness from massive, loadbearing timbers salvaged from the old wooden barns and houses which are a feature of northern Transylvania. Other reclaimed woods - elm and pine as well as oak from barns, docks, quays and lagoons (all of which look completely different as testimony to their former usage) - are engineered for stability, providing easy-to-fit boards, the majority of which are suitable for use over underfloor heating. There's even a small but stunning collection of specialist reclaimed cladding for use on walls.
Even if you're not actively looking to source a wood product at the moment, take a trawl through the Havwoods' website; it's enormously informative as well as showing pictures of the vast majority of their range. If you want to take things further you'll find that their staff are even more knowledgeable than their website, which is why this is the company that so many top designers and specifiers rely on. What's more, Havwoods have showrooms in London and Lancashire, carrying large panels of virtually their entire in-stock collection: an Aladdin's cave of wood that will work wherever you may need it.

West Side Story Just a stone’s throw from one of London’s top department stores in Mayfair, 65 Duke Street is a high-end 16 apartment residential development by Grosvenor. A benchmark for luxury living and integrated technology within a multiple scheme development, the project has earned a prestigious industry award. The apartments range from 1 to 3 bedrooms, are spread across five storeys and all enjoy integration of security (with video entry), lighting, HVAC and AV via simple to operate Crestron touch panels. Tenants access the building using keyless entry proximity cards which avoids the need to change locks and simplifies key management. They can also control many aspects of the automation via iPad Apps. Being Grade 2 listed the challenge, how and where to fit speakers so that they did not alter the aesthetics of the ceilings. Amina Evolution Series invisible loudspeakers were specified instantly for the living room 5.1 surround sound systems (AIW350E-S200) and also for the master bedrooms and the majority of second bedrooms (AIW150E-S200). The 5.1 systems also employ Velodyne Subcontractor Series subwoofers within joinery to help create hugely impressive audio effects with absolutely zero visual impact. “S200” versions of the Amina AIW150E and AIW350E were specified due to the smaller than usual spacing available between the ceiling framework. So, rather than have to re-frame the ceilings to accommodate Amina’s standard size speakers, “S200’s” were installed with minimum fuss. Thankfully it’s a situation that Amina had already foreseen – hence the design of the narrow “S200” models several years ago to widen the application range for invisible sound. The second challenge for the Integrator was to satisfy the building regulations on the project and maintain a 60 minute fire rating where the Amina speakers were fitted. Always keen to take on a challenge the product development team at Amina quickly designed a bespoke 60 minute fire hood solution to fit exactly within the building ceiling structures – thus not delaying the tight building schedules in place. The finished results speak for themselves. Neither the modern high-end finish of the apartments nor the Grade 2 listing of the building have hindered the integration of the latest home automation technologies. Amina Technologies invisible loudspeakers continue to provide integrators with high quality sound solutions where other manufacturers’ products do not meet developers’ requirements. The 2013 CEDIA award for Best Multiple Scheme for a Property Developer is justly deserved.

Set in the Berkshire countryside, in the valley of the River Thames, The Astor has been created through restoration of buildings that originally formed part of ‘The Model Farm’ – built by Lord Astor of the historic Cliveden Estate, which can be seen as part of the stunning rural backdrop to the property. The designer, Caroline Rogers, explained: “When I first saw the house, I could clearly see the potential. It’s an extraordinary property, with huge open areas, supported by gigantic beams. The whole feeling is one of space and air. Our task was to harness this extraordinary space, turning each area into a distinct and recognisable ‘room without walls’. “The result needed to be ultra-contemporary, so pale ceramic tiles were used across the entire ground floor living area. We then used colour to define the ‘rooms’ around the central atrium. The property is mainly arranged over the ground floor, with central openplan living space, also incorporating the kitchen area. The six bedroom suites are situated in the corners of the property, including the master suite which enjoys a dressing room, two bathrooms and extensive views over open countryside. It also features a private gymnasium which is located underground. Central to the property is a multi-level feature, with a cinema at lower ground level, and staircases rising to two upper ‘terraces’. Caroline explains: “The starting point was the kitchen area. Once this was defined it became clear which areas should be the dining room and living room, and so on. We revised the original layout plan by moving the dining room closer to the kitchen. We brought the neutral walls to life by selecting stunning artworks that match the colour scheme. “The dining area is located across the rear of the property, giving fabulous views of the garden and open countryside beyond. This part of the house was originally designated as a ‘garden room’ – which, in effect, it still is – but now with the added benefit of being able to enjoy the open aspect whilst entertaining friends and family.”

RPW Design has completed the re-design of the A Bar, a chic new cocktail bar in the InterContinental Amstel, Amsterdam. It may seem as though Amsterdam is constantly adding to its collection of luxury and designer hotels, yet the InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam remains the city’s Grande Dame, enjoying high status and a degree of respect among her peers. Now the grand old lady can boast a new destination bar, designed by RPW Design to attract a younger crowd without alienating the very loyal following that only the best of the best hotels enjoy. The A Bar opened last month and has set the standard for an on-going programme of works intended to bring the InterContinental Amstel bang up-to-date, so that it can reclaim its position as one of the foremost destinations in Amsterdam. As well as walking the tightrope between appealing to a younger audience whilst retaining its traditional customer base, Jan Wilson of RPW Design acknowledges that one of her biggest challenges was the A Bar’s limited back-of-house space, and its connections to the rest of the building. “The bar opens onto a hotel corridor and is located to the rear of the hotel, next to the terrace” she explains. “It also has an extremely high ceiling for a relatively narrow room.” Part of her strategy to overcome these challenges was the introduction of a striking light installation, comprising eight individual light fittings created from hand-blown glass. After tendering, these were manufactured to Jan’s specification by a supplier based in Austria. The fittings turned out to be one of the most challenging areas of the design. As Jan explains: “The Dutch are particularly prescriptive about the use of low energy lighting. The result was a lot of prototypes to make sure that the fittings not only looked good as a sculptural element, but also worked to provide some light to conform to the statutory requirements.” The smoky blue of the light fittings is reflected in the colour of the leather used for the bespoke chairs, adding to the ‘contemporary lux’ feel of the A Bar. Quality craftsmanship and materials are used throughout, from the bronze chain mail curtains and solid timber broad plank floors, to the polished gold finish back bar and feature shelving units. RPW always makes considerable efforts to commission and procure artwork that gives each of its design projects a special signature, unique to its location. The A Bar in the InterContinental Amstel features a key image over the back bar by the world renown photographer Hendrik Kerstens as well as other artworks that reflect the local contemporary art scene. Beyond its emphasis on comfort and luxury, the interiors of the A Bar bear little resemblance to its hotel ‘host’. “This was meant to be a new direction for the Amstel. Therefore we retained the values of the existing interiors but took the design in a completely new direction”, says Jan.

A Bold Transformation
MKV Design Reinvents the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest
(London, 27 June 2013) The public areas of the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest have undergone a remarkable transformation by MKV Design, the hotel’s first major refurbishment since it first opened in 1992. Designed originally by the renowned Hungarian architect, Mr Jozsef Finta, and named after the Renaissance King Matthias Corvinus who established Budapest as a European centre of art and culture, it was the first internationally branded hotel to be established in the city after the collapse of the Soviet Bloc and a significant symbol of Budapest’s re-emergence on the European stage. However, over the years, the interiors had come to need new life and distinction in a way that would meet the expectations of luxury hotel guests in the first quarter of the 21st Century. MKV Design’s courageous vision for the public areas firmly places the hotel in the present, enhancing the dramatic scale of the interior yet also creating a sequence of unique spaces that are inviting and exciting for overseas guests and local people alike. The lobby with its soaring nine metre volume up to a glazed roof has become a glowing expanse that amplifies its scale and harmonises the existing shapes and levels. Its light now shines beguilingly through the glazed front façade, and the space flows from the main porte cochère to reception, offering views through the café and restaurant to the second entrance on the opposite side of the building.
The two dominant columns have been over-clad to become magnificent sculptural forms, “contained” within a back-lit arch which frames the hotel beyond. New elements pick up on the circular glazed roof - for example, the patina of the marble flooring, the shaping of the portal walls and a circular seating area in the heart of the lobby. From here, guests catch glimpses of other parts of the ground floor reflected in glass and mirrored panels designed to play upon their curiosity and draw them further into the hotel. Reception takes the form of elegant padded leather desks, increased in number from two to four; when the extra desks are not needed, they slide into a full-height timber wall treatment. Key to the designers’ re-planning of the lobby was the replacement of the staircase leading up to the first floor function and meeting rooms. A modern interpretation of the conventional grand staircase is now one of the first elements that greets guests upon arrival – a magnificent staircase which curves around the edge of the lobby and is as much a work of art as functional stairway. Constructed in an elegant brown stone against a glazed-over Crystalux wall, its decorative and perforated metal balustrade, reminiscent of the Art Nouveau styling for which Budapest is famed, sweeps up and wraps around the first floor where it looks over the lobby atrium.
the Kempinski Hotel
MKV has captured space for a ground floor bar with its own street entrance. Blue Fox The Bar is intimate and clubby in ambience with its dark walnut timber floor and tables together with richly toned upholstery to the seating. Lighting is low and discreet, supplemented by the play of reflections from mirrored nooks and columns. The deep glow of the cobalt blue acrylic bar surround, inset with mesh and suggestive of a soda siphon, completes the sophisticated vibe of the space. Located within the central atrium, The Living Room is a modern interpretation of Budapest’s traditional coffee house culture. This is a deeply comfortable area and a quiet contrast to the theatricality of the lobby, where guests are invited to take time out of their day to sink into comfortable sofas or high-back armchairs, read books and relax near the fire. A stand-out feature is the new patisserie counter distinguished by a back-lit coloured glass panel behind as well as by its display of tempting cakes and the aroma of warming pastries emanating from its oven. A soft colour palette in shades of orange, pink, yellow and green brings warmth to the space and feminises the rich timber envelope. The restaurant, re-named ÉS Bisztró (‘es’ is Hungarian for‘and’), is where the designers’ concept taps into the international trend for creating a dining experience that hints of locale and tradition yet is firmly rooted in a modern context. It is both farmhouse kitchen and stylish urban restaurant, traditional and modern, a breakfast room and a party venue, fun-loving and grownup, ‘Kanal es Villa’ – spoon and fork. Guests can enjoy a contemporary, informal and relaxed experience reflecting the quality food offering and complementing the hotel’s fine dining restaurant. The floor is of rustic timber with modern tessellated tiles defining buffet areas, simple white tiles clad the walls and the hanging metal ceiling lights are a modern take on traditional central European café lighting. The centrepiece bevelled mirror screen, custom-designed in three curved parts, glimpses and plays with reflections of people as they pass; patterned tin ceiling tiles also catch a hint of movement below.
A large space as is necessary at breakfast time, the restaurant has been carefully planned to divide into three areas during less busy times and the mirrored screen obscures the restaurant beyond from street view. The front of the restaurant now has a greater connection to the terrace and street outside than with the hotel behind, and from the street appears as an urban street café rather than hotel diner, offering an altogether more attractive proposition for passers-by on the boutique-lined Fashion Street. The Promenade is another striking intervention by MKV Design. What was previously only a circulation space is now reinvented as a destination in its own right - a chic and welcoming lounge where guests will go to see and be seen. The atmosphere changes completely between morning, when the Promenade has the quality of a conservatory bathed in the direct sunlight that shines through the atrium’s glazed roof, and the evening when the space becomes full of mood and the design is shown to dramatic effect. Seating areas are beautifully defined by inset mosaic “rugs” which fan out to meet the curve of the space, and lighting is low and atmospheric. The colour palette is natural and timeless: tan leather sofas, warm walnut panelling to the columns and ceiling, bronze tables and alcoves clad in honey-toned, deep-stitched Alcantara softly washed by down-lighters. It is here that guests can now absorb the most complete connection with the experience of the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus; although an internal space, by following the curve of the circular skylight, the Promenade offers glimpses of both entrances and all the spaces in-between as well as the sky above. “Our aim has been to impart a renewed personality to the hotel”, says Maria Vafiadis. “By working with the scale and volume of the existing building, it has been possible to celebrate its form while creating spaces that responds to the varying desires of guests through day and evening, on business or at leisure, leaving a unique and lasting impression upon them all.”

Eames Molded Wood Side Chair: Reinventing a Classic On the first anniversary of the launch of the Herman Miller Collection the company returns to New York Design Week to present some of their latest designs including the Eames Molded Wood Side chair. For the first time this iconic form will be produced in molded wood in a range of veneer and base options, and will be called the Eames Molded Wood Side Chair. Designed by Charles and Ray Eames and introduced by Herman Miller in 1950, the original plastic chair line was first explored as shells stamped in steel, before successfully mass producing the designs in molded plastic. Later the side chair was revisited in wire. Throughout their careers, the Eames were keenly interested in exploring new technologies and materials, including their earlier pioneering work in molded plywood, and used that material in several of their best known designs. But the technology limitations of their day prevented the designers from producing the plastic side chair form in molded wood; the curves were simply too dramatic and complex. Now, the latest advances in 3-D veneer technology give the wood veneer the extra flexibility it needs to be molded into the complex curves of a single shell. Honoring the same organic shapes and sleek lines of the Eames classic work, it celebrates the designers’ appreciation of honest materials. In reviewing the prototypes for this new material approach, both Herman Miller and the Eames heirs agreed that Charles and Ray would have readily approved of this progression in their design. The new Molded Wood Side Chair also aligns beautifully with the mission and strategy of the Herman Miller Collection, advancing classic design with today’s technological capabilities in ways that honor and extend the original ideas. Available in santos palisander, white ash and walnut woods, and wire (or “Eiffel Tower”), dowel leg and 4-leg base options, the chair is immediately orderable by the trade through Herman Miller’s commercial showrooms and dealers. Retail availability begins in May, exclusively through Design Within Reach retail shops and at www.dwr.com, or at Herman Miller’s own www.hermanmiller.com/store

gpstudio designs Fortnum & Mason Candle Room
gpstudio, the specialist retail design consultancy, has just completed a design of the Fortnum & Mason Candle Room. Whilst the brand is synonymous with heritage, the brief was to focus on creating the ultimate destination for scented and dining candles within a sensory, distinctive environment.
enduring relevance to a modern audience. The work coincides with an expansion and relocation of the current candle offer, and sees the introduction of niche candle brands including Roja Dove, Cire Trudon and Rigaud.
Candles are integral to the history of Fortnum’s. Three hundred and seven years ago, William Fortnum was a footman at the Court of Queen Anne, where one of his tasks was to empty halfburnt candles. Instead of leaving the wax to go to waste, he would take the used candles home make new candles from them to sell to the ladies of the court. Following his success, Mr Fortnum joined forces with his landlord, Hugh Mason, and they went on to open Fortnum & Mason in 1707.
gpstudio worked with the original architectural features of the space - preserving the handcrafted panels and the wooden flooring, ceilings and pillars which reference to the brand’s heritage. Working with this historic base, gpstudio added simple yet beautifully made furniture. This furniture works with the architectural detail to create an atmosphere of purity and simplicity, which remains relevant to today’s consumer. Elements of opulence have been added by way of Murano glass candelabras.
The new gpstudio design captures this entrepreneurial spirit and carefully references the brand’s heritage, whilst championing its
gpstudio has selected a warm, evocative palette of colours and materials which creates a elegant atmosphere without losing sight of
the timelessness of the product and brand. The space itself is interactive, with bell jars which allow customers to sample the scent of individual candles. Gregor Jackson, Partner at gpstudio, says, “Our aim was to retain the historic fabric of the brand but re-invigorate the space, creating a room which expresses Fortnum & Mason’s values - with a touch of English folly. We wanted to map the progression that candles have made alongside the brand’s own development, from church candles at its inception through to the scented candles of today.” Jo Newton, from Fortnum & Mason, said: “Fortnum’s is dedicated to supporting craftsmanship and design. Candles are an important part of Fortnum’s history. It is fitting that we should have a wonderful space for them.”

Feature Bathroom lighting is becoming more desirable, but until now the choices of switching have been severely limited. (Pullcords, PIRs or outside switching). Sensorbility, has therefore developed the NEW Bathroom Switch controller, with Dimmer and Timer variants; thus allowing bathroom designers far more flexibility when it comes to lighting design and operation within bathrooms. The variations of the new controller include simple on/off switching, ramp-up dimming, ramp-down switch-off and time delay switch-off. Wired to our proven Bathroom Switch Sensor Pads, which can be placed behind most materials such as Ceramic Tiles, Wood, Plastic, Glass, and even Metals, users can create switches or dimmers in virtually any shape and situation. Tiles covering Sensor Pads are adhered with silicone allowing access should it be necessary. In Bathrooms, these Sensor Pads can even be placed behind tiles reachable from the bath or shower (zones 1&2) and thus allow safe switching and dimming.
Say NO to bathroom Pull-cords Sensors can be fitted behind most materials to suit your particular dĂŠcor!
The new Bathroom Switch controllers can be activated from up to 12 low voltage (5vdc) Sensor Pads, so for example a Dimmer Controller can be operated from a Sensor Pad by the door and then the lights dimmed by touching a tile whilst in the bath.

MAGNETIC PENDULUM REGULATOR
From concept in 2010 to ultra-precision time in 2013...…
TAG HEUER CARRERA MIKROPENDULUMS PREAMBLE In 2010, TAG Heuer presented the Pendulum Concept Watch, Replacing the mechanical torque produced by a traditional hairspring (invented by Christian Huygens in 1675) by its magnetic equivalent has been widely hailed as a revolutionary idea. As often happens in science, the path from the concept to the concrete involves exploring every solution possible--and impossible... In the case of a magnetic oscillator, moving from the principle to its application poses many problems, including: temperature energy density of the magnets, manufacturing, machining, and testing magnets, measuring and testing the various physical quantities, linearity of magnetic torque as a function of amplitude, ... Over the last three years we have worked on each of these points in order to transform an “interesting” idea into a “usable” reality. for that of physics, and explaining what we did and why we did it leads us to the consideration of a number of concepts.
«THE FISRT EVER MAGNETIC TOURBILLONS A UNIQUE TAG HEUER PATENTED TECHNOLOGY»
PENDULUM The Pendulum is a mechanical system that can be interpreted as a rotating machine comprised of a rotor magnet and a two-magnet stator. A coaxial rotor on the balance’s axis is freely rotatable and consists of a symmetrical dipole in the perpendicular plane. gap, and the second consisting of a ring forming the stator. The latter consists of two magnets, of opposing signs, arranged in rigorously symmetrical opposition and coupled using a conductive material forming the electromagnetic yoke. The magnets are permanent magnets. The electromagnetic yoke is a ferrite magnetic binder. The equilibrium position of the system is a minimum energy level characterized by a spatial compensation of different magnetic If the rotor is rotated around its axis, it causes a deviation from the magnetic balance and generates restoring forces or torque resistance (quite similar to the one created by a spiral spring). The differential equation characteristic of the oscillator is the same same nature. Therefore, the main problems are: The stability of the torque as a function of temperature The linearity of the torque as a function of the amplitude of the balance
