Make Millions in a Spa & Salon Business In today’s world, the ever growing salon and spa industries have opened up new prospects to achieve real financial independence by owning a successful salon or spa. Certainly, more and more salon and spa professionals are selling their businesses and retiring as multi-millionaires which only occurred in a few rare cases two decades ago. The journey and rules onto becoming successful in the salon and spa businesses have changed dramatically, as has the characterization of achievement in these industries. Previously, the salon and spa owners would have endeavored to make a good living and be at the top of their game in their business. Nowadays, these owners strive to build real value and retire financially independent so they can travel the world and enjoy the fruits of their labor. The modern salon and spa owner are a lot more entrepreneurial, imaginative, savvy, and innovative than their forerunners. There is a collective agreement amongst today’s young salon and spa owners, that yesterday’s rules to running these businesses will, at best, only lead to providing a good living. But, to achieve the kind of success that is accessible in today’s thriving and ever-changing salon and spa industries, these owners have to master this new set of rules.

RULE 1: Carry Exclusive Products It is to no surprise to learn that specifically in the twenty-five salons within a few miles of your salon offer L’oreal, Wella, Bumble and Bumble, and Paul Mitchell. When it comes to hair color specifically, the actual truth of customer sentiment is even worse. In a recent survey of 1,000 non-cosmetologist salon hair color clients, less than 1% thought they knew what brand of hair color their hair colorist used. To make matters worse, half of those tested guessed wrong when they identified the brand! This situation even gets grimmer when we discuss the matter of product diversion. Despite the point that product manufacturers blame rogue distributors of selling their products to businesses such as Amazon; it simply is not true. Given the requirements of these mega-retailers such as product liability insurance and certificates of trademark ownership, only a product manufacturer can get their product some shelf space in these mega-retailer’s stores and that is only after months of effort. Though your sales representative is explaining that they are selling you professionalonly products, you can do a simple search on Amazon’s website to discover that your clients can find the exact same products for a fraction of the price at these stores.

RULE 2: Develop Long Term Relationships with Your Clients The present day consumer has been putting more and more importance on feeling a connection with the products and services they use. A number of companies that have got this strategy just right are: Apple, Disney and Coca-Cola – and your salon and spa can too. Instead of providing your clients with a short service that enhances their beauty until their next visit, develop a program that allows follow up visits in order to maintain and enhance the initial service. It is important to remember to not sell them products, they don’t want or need to be sold anything. Instead, it is better to recommend a path for them to accomplish their beauty and wellness goals and offer professional yet personalized guidance down that path. This sort of tailored professional advice and consultation is precisely what the modern salon and spa client is craving. Providing this invaluable service will develop a relationship of loyalty with them in a very deep and meaningful way. When we look at Organic Care Systems as a case study, it is clear to see that the system they offer is an example of how to provide your client with this path. It starts with the wet-stretch-test, which demonstrates physical evidence of their hair’s need for either moisture, protein, or maintenance, this establishes a verifiable baseline of your client’s hair. Progress is then derived from both in-salon and in-spa and at-home products, and the usage can be tested and verified with the client at future service visits. Long term progress will be completely noticeable and be a sturdy reinforcement for their loyalty.

RULE 3: Focus on Cultivating an Ethos Rather Than Developing an Image Salon and spa owners have heard it a thousand times before, it is all about image, and for today’s modern salon and spa, nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, the idea of “building an image” has been replaced with “building client affinity”, which simply means that the client has an inherent likeness, connection, and feeling of kinship to a business. The best way to build this affinity with a client is to develop a strong set of values, goals, culture and have a mission which your target audience is likely to share. It is important to consider what your target clientele values and build your salon and spas culture around this. If you are an organic salon and spa for example, the clients probably value health, wellbeing and social and environmental stewardship.

RULE 4: Be Savvy about Your Prices One of the most common misconceptions in the salon and spa industries is that if they raise their prices, clients might be scared away. While this might be true in other industries, a number of salon and spa owners have realized that the higher the prices are on their services, the more attractive discounts look in their promotional programs. For instance, if you were to raise the prices on the services menu by 20%, but offer a 20% discount for friends and family of current clients, you have increased the perceived value of your services, improved client loyalty from your referral network, and have allowed for higher prices from potential new clients. Although we do not recommend increasing your service prices to an unreasonable amount, we have found that almost all salons and spas would benefit from adopting this approach to some extent as long as the service price has increased to a reasonable amount.

Rule 5: Have an Exit Strategy Starting up and running a new business is a stressful and risky endeavor. As humans, we instinctively want to recognize an exit whenever we step into a moderately risky situation. For instance, when we step onto an airplane, we automatically want to know where the exits are. Salon and spa owners similarly should have an exit plan, but many do not. To define your exit strategy for your salon or spa, you need to ask yourself a few questions and set yourself a long term plan. How much money do you have to have to retire? How much money would you want to sell your business for? Do you want to leave it to you children? Is your plan to expand? A number across the country? Multiple countries? Answering these questions will help you define what your exit strategy is.

Rule 6: Don’t Be A Star Whether your exit strategy is to sell your salon or spa, leave it to your children or slowly pass it onto your staff, it will become important to you that you build an independent business that has value in itself. A salon or spa owner should not develop a business ON their talents, but rather, build a business FROM their talents. If your salon or spa is successful, its lifespan as a business would outlive your career, and could be passed onto your successor, whether it is to your children or to someone who has bought it off you. The only way you will ever pass your business on with any value is to make sure the salon or spa can run just as successfully if you are not involved in the business. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to put your ego aside and commit to build a great business. Statistics frequently demonstrate that businesses who have sustainable profits sell for seven to ten times their annual profits. Unfortunately, salons and spas usually sell for two times their annual profit because when their owners leave, their profits also diminish. Because of this, most salons and spas are sold for less than their furniture and fixtures. To put this into perspective, if you build a salon or spa business that produces £300,000 per year in profits, you would most likely sell that business for around £600,000 if you built a business ON your talents and made yourself the star of your business. Or, you could sell the business for £3 Million if you built a business with sustainable profits even if you are no longer working for the business.

There is no better way in keeping existing customers than to have them leave content after every visit. Word-of-mouth can be a tremendously effective form of organically advertising your salon or spa. Customer service starts with well-mannered, professionally trained staff.

a) Create a clean, comfortable, safe environment in your salon or spa

From the point that customers arrive at your salon or spa establishment to when they leave, the client must be presented with an environment that is clean, safe, comfortable and relaxing. Salon and Spa customers undoubtedly expect cleanliness, so you have to make sure that floors are swept in between clients. Similarly, it is imperative to ensure that towels, trimmers and other equipment are washed and fresh for new customers. Another tip is to install comfortable sofas and furniture in waiting areas, and offer magazines or have coffee table books for reading. Anything that would create a comfortable atmosphere in your salon or spa will aid in retaining customers and gain new ones.

Convenience for your customers is key, so if you offer hair, nail, beauty and spa services in your business it would be advisable to create a package deal that would create a one-stop solution for all your client’s needs. DO use a foundation that matches your skin tone exactly. Your best bet is to try on a foundation in the department store before you buy it. Drugstore options are often brilliant, but you can't try them on, and trying to make do with the wrong color will lead to nothing but problems. Apply the foundation from your cheek down past your jaw. You're not going to wear foundation on your neck, but you want to make sure it looks natural from your face to your neck. DO apply foundation on your eyelids up to the brow. Applying foundation on your eyelids will help eyeshadows go on smoothly and cover any redness, giving your entire face an even and smooth appearance. DO use complementary makeup colors. Think of your blush and lipstick as an outfit you're going to wear on your face. For example, if you are wearing a pink lip color, make sure your blush is in a similar color family. You wouldn't wear a pink skirt and an orange top, would you? DON'T wear that on your face either. DO apply eyeliner as close to the lash line as possible. A soft black, grey, or charcoal brown shade can beautifully enhance your lashes and frame your eye. Be sure to get the liner between the lashes; it's helpful to use a magnifying mirror to be sure you place it exactly. If the outer corners of your eyelids have begun to droop, make sure the eyeliner turns up ever-so-slightly, so you DON'T emphasize the drooping.

For the lower lash line, for daytime, it's best to use a softer color than you do for the upper lash line. Lining all the way around your eye in black is an extreme look that's best saved for nighttime, if ever. Helpful hint: Powder eyeshadow can also be worn as eyeliner. Apply it wet or dry with a fine-tip brush. •

DO shade and define your eyes. Eyeshadow is all about enhancing your eye area, not coloring it. It's best not to use eyeshadow colors that match your eye-blue eyeshadow does not make blue eyes look better, it just looks out of date and overdone, which is why you rarely see examples of this in fashion magazines. Shades of brown (there are dozens and dozens) all the way to black allow for an amazing range of sophisticated, glamorous, elegant, and classic looks.

DO consider the intensity of your blush with your skin tone. If you have fair to light skin, then pale pink, rose, or peach blush shades are more flattering than deep berry or plum shades, which can make your cheek area look bruised. In contrast, women with medium to tan skin tones can look gorgeous with berry or plum-hued blush, and also can opt for russet, or even mahogany shades. DO use professional makeup brushes. You'll be surprised at how beautiful your makeup looks when you apply it with full-size, high-quality brushes rather than with the tiny, cheap applicators that often come packaged with makeup. Investing in a set of good brushes is one of the wisest beauty moves you can make! DO check your makeup in a magnifying mirror. What you can't see, you can't fix; for example, makeup settling into the fine lines around your eye or perhaps into the folds around your mouth. Applying a little powder directly over the line, and then blending upwards and out can keep everything in place, but you have to see it up close to do it right. Any mirror of 4X magnification or greater (depending on your eyesight, of course) will do the trick, and these mirrors are widely available, at most drugstores, Bed Bath & Beyond, and beauty supply stores.

DON’T wear full makeup every day. It isn’t necessary to wear a full eye design every day … consider a simpler look for your daily life. Foundation, concealer, lipstick, blush, eyebrow shapers, if needed, a little powder, and mascara is plenty. Eyeshadow is great, but it’s also time consuming, and it’ll look bad if you try to slap it on in the few minutes you have in the morning. DON’T use emollient/greasy concealers on blemishes or the under eye area. Emollient products will either clog pores or slip into lines … all day long. DON’T use a concealer that is too light or too dark. Using the wrong color concealer will make your eye area look strange. Use a flesh-tone concealer (that means no yellow, orange, or lavender tones) that is just a shade or two lighter than your foundation. DON’T skip lip color. Adding a pop of color to your lips can brighten up a washed out face and polish your overall look. Experiment to see what colors and intensities look best for your skin tone, and DON’T be afraid to be bold or step out of your comfort zone. Keep in mind that small, thin lips look best with brighter, vivid colors, and larger lips do better with softer shades. Avoid dark colors because they make lips look ominous and Gothic.

Helpful hint: Red lips can make a beautiful, dramatic statement; just keep it on the brighter side, as opposed to magenta, purple, or brown. The best way to tell you are wearing a beautiful lip color for your skin tone is the number of compliments you get from your friends and family. • •

DON’T overdo mascara. Clumped mascara is distracting and messy looking. Learn absolute essential mascara application tips. DON’T stripe on blush. Use a great blush brush, a soft color, and apply it using light, sweeping strokes. You should see no lines where the blush stops and starts. Blending a little powder on over your blush can soften any lines. DON’T overdo your eyebrows. Brows that are drawn-on, pencil-thin, overly sparse, strongly arched, or too heavy or thick can make you look older than you really are; plus they can look harsh and dated. If you’re at a loss as to what to do for your brows, make an appointment with a brow specialist, who can guide you to the right brow shape and show you effective grooming techniques. Many salons and spas offer this service, or ask around at your favorite cosmetics department. DON’T glob on lip gloss. Too much gloss can make it look like you’re drooling instead of adding a beautiful shine to your lips. If you have lines around your mouth, avoid glossy, slick, or creamy lipsticks because they’ll quickly bleed into the fine lines, and they won’t last past mid-morning before you need a touch-up. DON’T get carried away with glitter and shine. A little extra shine or glitter can spice up an evening look, but during the day it’s just distracting, kind of like wearing a sequined gown to the office. However, there are many “radiance-boosting” makeup products that forgo that obvious, distracting shine in favor of a subtle luminosity. Too much moisturizer encourages concealers and foundations to travel right into the very lines you’re trying to hide.
