Gardens for Quality of life and WellbeinG Championed at rhs Chelsea floWer shoW 2015

Sanctuary, calm and happiness are key elements in many of the gardens and exhibits featured at the 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments.

The case for the health and wellbeing benefits of gardening was also made by leading scientists in the prestigious RHS John MacLeod Lecture** last November.

The connection between health, wellbeing and horticulture has long been an area of interest for gardeners and garden designers, and remains a rich source of inspiration for designers from across the world. An RHS survey in 2014* found that of 2,000 people asked about gardening and growing plants, nearly 90 percent said gardening is good for your health and 95 percent said it helps lift their mood.

This enduring appeal of gardens as sanctuaries of peace and happiness is reflected in several exhibits this year, especially within Fresh gardens, where the calming influence of gardens is highlighted. Fuminari Todaka’s ‘Home – Personal Universe’ exhibit is designed to demonstrate how a garden can deepen the love of a family, and features a private family space where the soothing features, such as a delicate waterfall, help to inspire conversation between parents and children.

The Breast Cancer Haven Garden, a collaboration between designer Sarah Eberle and artisan scupltor Tom Hare, reflects the support offered by The Haven national charity to people affected by breast cancer. A place of retreat and recovery, the garden is based on the concept of the nest; a welcoming, uplifting and reassuring space to be on your own (if desired) but not alone. ‘Water Station’ by designer Borut Benedejcic highlights the importance of protecting water supplies and seeks to create a calm and peaceful feeling by harmonising humanity and nature. Making their debut to RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year, designer Kamelia Bin Zaal and Al Barari Firm Management LLC present ‘The Beauty of Islam’ garden. Using planting and hard landscape patterns that reflect those found within Islam, the garden is designed to be a sanctuary in which to relax and feel inspired. ‘Peace in Ukraine’, by fellow RHS Chelsea debutant Tatyana Shynkarenko, invites participants to look at the situation in the designer’s native country from a new point of view and to find ways of achieving peace and harmony. The garden is divided into two spaces: the first looks inwards and symbolises the human state of narrow-mindedness, while the second looks outward, offering a space to sit, meditate and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. In the Discovery Zone of the Great Pavilion, designer and journalist David Domoney teams up with Thrive, the leading UK charity that uses gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of those living with disabilities, ill health or social isolation, to inspire visitors to see the power that plants have to increase happiness and wellbeing.

READY-SPACED, READY TO PLANT, READY WHEN YOU ARE.

WGM Ltd have been supplying and maintaining garden and commercial machinery for over forty five years. We feel that our success over this period of time has been largely due to our ability to offer a personal and professional service to our customers along with expert advice enabling you to make the right choice of machinery.

At WGM we always strive to provide our customers with the right machine at the right price. At each of our three branches you will be given the widest possible choice of products and prices, and our knowledgeable, experienced sales team are always on hand to help you find the perfect machine.

This successful approach has resulted in the company being able to offer some of the best names on grass: Honda, John Deere and Stihl to name but a few. In this fast world of email, internet and call centres, we realise how hard it is to talk to people face to face let alone talk to a salesman who fully understands your requirements.

At WGM we realise that all of our customers have specific requirements, so when you visit us you’ll find household names such as Honda, Hayter, Stihl, Countax, Echo, Husqvarna and John Deere, alongside alternative brands that offer the very best value without compromising on quality.

We believe that our expert product knowledge gained from the use and demonstration of the machinery that we sell will always give confidence to our customers.

All of our three branches also display a huge range of lawn tractors, stocking everything from small garden-riders to large estate diesel compacts. Furthermore you’ll find a vast array of add-on attachments including trailers, lawn care systems, paddock maintenance equipment, sprayers and spreaders.

In those forty five years, we have treated each year as a new challenge and have never shied away from change and expansion. With four separate retail locations incorporating domestic garden machinery, a specialist commercial and groundscare team, an arboricultural department and full workshop and spares support we feel that we have moved with the times.

The best advice, price and choice is what our reputation is always judged on, and in forty five years we have steadfastly adhered to that core belief and grown WGM to one of the UK’s largest specialist dealers of garden machinery.

Lely UK has introduced the new T754 to its extensive line-up of TYM tractors available in the UK. With a 74hp industry-leading Deutz engine and improved emissions standards, the T754 offers enhanced performance and engineering excellence. Suitable for a wide range of markets, from golf and fine turf, groundscare and landscaping to schools, colleges and small holdings, this heavy-duty vehicle has a solid chassis and a spacious, fully air-conditioned cabin, ensuring all-round comfort. Lely’s national sales manager Jeff Anguige explains more about the new tractor’s key benefits: “The T754 is a great addition to our range of TYM tractors here at Lely. The chassis is the same size as our 60hp models, but has a larger horsepower

and a hitch capacity of 2,327kg. Emission standards are also greatly improved on this model, with the T754 meeting Tier 4.” Other features include a dual air cleaner, an intuitive digital instrument panel and a position/ draft control and one-touch PTO on/off control. Now available for delivery, the new model has been building up interest among greenkeepers, groundsmen, contractors and landscapers alike since it went on show at last year’s Turfcare Live event, run by Lely. Offering customers and prospective buyers the chance to see all the latest turf maintenance equipment distributed by Lely – including Toro, Otterbine and TYM – Turfcare Live visitors were able to test drive the T754 and

gain valuable advice on operating techniques from Lely’s experts. “Since the event, we’ve seen enquiries ranging from small holdings, landscape contractors and hire companies, right the way though to golf and racecourses needing to aerate large areas,” says Jeff. The T754’s tyres can be ordered to spec, with options including turf, industrial and agricultural. Lely’s comprehensive range of TYM tractors, including the T754, is available for free demonstration, offering buyers full evaluation of the product at their own site conditions before purchase. “WE HAVE MOVED LOCK, STOCK AND BARREL TO MAKITA” SAYS LANDFORM MD “I’m really impressed with Makita’s 4-stroke blower and it’s saving us a great deal of time. Over the past two years we have changed our tool inventory lock, stock and barrel to Makita,” says Mark Gregory, landscape design guru and managing director of Landform Consultants. Landform build award-winning show gardens, provide landscape designs and construction, together with a full grounds maintenance service. “Makita tools are a perfect companion for our garden construction requirements: powerful, totally reliable and always the first choice of our teams,” continues Mark. Improved on-site performance is confirmed by Alan Hemmings, Landform’s estate garden manager: “The Makita 4-stroke line trimmer is a really powerful machine which can cut great swathes of rough pasture in no time at all. Its big power output allows us to get far more work delivered than with a 2-stroke; and we are using less fuel but delivering a greater amount of work. The blower offers better economy, the harness is brilliant and comfortable, and it’s so very quiet. This 4-stroke engine has much lower vibration which is important over longer periods of use. You can’t go wrong with a Makita 4-stroke.” www.makitauk.com Twitter @MakitaUK Facebook.com/makitauk

Leading US-based artificial grass manufacturer, ProGreen, is establishing a network of UK-based accredited installers as the company expands into the UK for the first time. The move is likely to shake up the UK market as ProGreen is renowned for its product quality. Backed by some 30 years of research and development, each of ProGreen’s products is scientifically designed, manufactured and tested in-house in the USA to the highest standards.

Key to the quality test is each product’s polyurethane, not latex, backing. Latex typically degrades more quickly and is favoured by most other manufacturers. Given their durability, ProGreen products each carry an 8-year insured warranty, the best product guarantee available on the market. ProGreen aims to help people make the most of their outdoor space at any time of year, with typical customers including young families, retirees and the

time-poor. Commercial clients include schools and nurseries; sports pitch owners; restaurants, hotels and pubs; and showrooms. ProGreen turf is also increasingly popular with pet owners owing to ZeoFill, a proprietary infill product made of purified volcanic ash, which erases pet odours completely and never needs to be replaced. Andy Webb, Sales Manager for ProGreen Europe, said: “It’s an exciting time to be part of ProGreen. We are expanding quickly and now looking to build a high quality network of UK installers with whom to service our growing customer base here. We’ve had hugely positive customer reviews and look forward to broadening our customer base to all corners of the country.” For further information and contact details, visit: www.progreen-grass.com

Pop Up Power Supplies® Safe, secure, silent power: retractable utility points supplying electricity, water and air to public places

Pop Up Power Supplies® recently supplied six retractable service power units for installation in the Piazza at Covent Garden. The 450kg units are buried out of site beneath the famous cobbled piazza and are raised out of the ground when required by a turning handle. When not in use the units do not impact on the historic appearance of the Piazza as they are barely noticeable. Covent Garden Technical Services Team needed a power solution for temporary stalls and events that are put on throughout the year. The solution was Pop Up Power® retractable service units located near to the Transport Museum and next to the Portico of St Paul’s Church in the Piazza.

www.mmtimber.co.uk M&M Timber is a Division of Forest Garden Limited.

Hard landscaping specialists, Bituchem has completed the first application of its advanced Natratex Cotswold Porous material at the recently redeveloped Royal William Yard in Plymouth. Approximately 2000sq.m of the porous material was applied to the ‘secret garden’ car park, giving both a practical and aesthetically pleasing finish to the site. The Natratex Cotswold Porous material is particularly suitable for applications on sites with preservation restrictions, due to the lack of deep earth work needed. This also makes the application and maintenance of the material significantly easier than other infiltration systems. The application does not require any additional drainage systems which reduces the overall time and cost of the project. Bituchem re-designed its popular Natratex Cotswold material to replicate natural infiltration methods, in response to the demand for Sustainable Drainage Systems

(SuDS). The asphalt material is laid on a porous receiving layer and has an open structure to allow water to permeate through the surface into the ground and eventually finding its way to a natural water source. The material has been designed to remove the need for conventional drainage systems, thus eliminating the likelihood of blocked drains and water contamination. The new car park at the Royal William Yard is just one part of the redevelopment of the Plymouth landmark led by developers, Urban Splash. The project has been taking place for a number of years and has introduced a range of commercial, residential and leisure areas, including a large variety of restaurants, making it the perfect socialising environment for locals and tourists. ian marlow mrbs sculptor The Somerset town of Frome is rapidly gaining a reputation as the place to be for anyone involved in the arts and just a few miles away lies the small village of Buckland Dinham which is home to the sculptor Ian Marlow. Ian is a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and works in stainless steel and glass, creating sculptures for private clients as well as corporate and public bodies such as NHS Trusts and schools. “The thing I love about commissions,” he said, “…is that they let me explore ideas I may not have otherwise considered.” And with that comes new inspiration and sometimes new methods, which he then takes back to his own studio work. A recent example of this was a commission to make two sculptures for the new Community Hospital at Bridgwater, one of which was a fourteen meter long sculpture in stainless steel. The brief for this asked for it to reflect something from the previous 200 year history of the town and Ian decided that stained glass would be the ideal medium for that, but that meant learning a new skill. It was a challenge he relished: “One of the great things about working in any of the arts,” he said, “is that you are always learning new things and seeking new challenges to further your own experience and develop your work.”

As well as several commissions for new academies in London, other recent commissions have included a large wall sculpture in stainless steel and fused glass for a newly created design studio at a preparatory school and a 2 metre tall stainless steel sculpture for a housing development which is due to be completed for early in 2016. At the moment he is putting the finishing touches to a steel and glass sculpture for a retreat in Northumberland. Ian takes his commission work very seriously. “I always say that it’s part of my job to make it easy for the client. Anyone commissioning a sculpture, whether a private customer, architect or designer, needs to have confidence in the artist they’ve commissioned, and communication is the key ingredient to providing that confidence. I always keep clients fully updated as the sculpture progresses so that they can get on with their own work knowing that it will be ready when they need it.” In between doing commissions, Ian is always creating new sculptures for major exhibitions or for display in his own sculpture garden. Here visitors can meet him and discuss their own requirements or purchase a sculpture on display. Visiting an artist at his studio, seeing the work and where it’s made, adds a personal touch to what can be a major purchase and many people prefer this. It is also, Ian believes, good for the artist too and he always welcomes visitors, although it is advisable to plan your visit to ensure that he will be there. With prices starting at about £1000, Ian’s sculptures range in size from smaller interior and garden pieces to large scale public works.

ContrastinG ConCrete Photos courtesy of Chris Hodson

As the next stages of PRP Architect’s public realm regeneration at the east London Brownfield estate near completion, Chris Hodson – consultant to the trade association Interpave – reviews the extensive use of colourful precast concrete paving amongst iconic 20th century concrete buildings. The Brownfield Estate began to be developed in the 1950s and now has a settled resident base and strong local identity. It incorporates a conservation area, linked to the local landmark Chrisp Street Market with its innovative ‘Idea Store’ community library. The Estate also includes listed, iconic high-rise blocks, designed by ‘brutalist’ architect Ernő Goldfinger in the late 60s and early 70s Balfron Tower, Carradale House and Glenkerry House – which contrast with the surrounding low-rise buildings. Before regeneration, a key issue with the Estate was the variable quality and character of the urban realm, which was ill-defined with uncertainty about identifying public or private spaces and fronts or backs of buildings. With standard width carriageways, very wide pavements and no defensible space to frontages, the streetscape was bleak. Usable open space was sparse and there were few play facilities. This regeneration project, designed by PRP for Poplar HARCA, aims to transform the public realm associated with both existing and new infill dwellings, creating new, improved building entrances and connections to the wider area. Master-planning Approach A master-plan approach was adopted, intended to be cohesive and responsive to existing neighbourhood constraints - so ensuring long-term, sustainable improvements. The design works within the general layout of the existing, refurbished buildings and adopted streets, but introduces new buildings to improve the streetscape: in addition to a new residential tower, two infill sites, contained by 1950s maisonette blocks, are being developed. Public realm interventions seek to clearly define footpaths and defensible space, introduce new front gardens for low-rise buildings and add new public spaces to give a sense of arrival. Art will be introduced at key points and trees added more widely to soften the environment. Parking will be distributed throughout the Estate, not concentrated in parking courts, and a new ‘white light’ scheme introduced. Hard Landscape Language In terms of materiality, the designers aim to unify disparate elements of the site using a

simple palette of hard landscape materials, developing a language that unites the neighbourhood. Wherever possible, multi-use streets and spaces are developed - bold and contemporary in character, using robust and high quality landscape elements. Designs are characterised by a uniform application of concrete block paving on un-adopted, HARCA land with feature paving announcing estate entrances and around key buildings. Here, concrete flags in strong colours are arranged in bands to create a bold linear feel. Then, throughout the scheme, silver-grey concrete setts, with enhanced granite surface adding sparkle, highlight footways, while charcoal setts identify private amenity space. Edges and transformations are defined by enhanced-finish concrete kerbs, some laid flush, others raised. The material palette is complemented by high quality street furniture – seating, bins, tree grills and reflector lighting. Entrance Plazas A long, 7-storey block - Langdon House - plays a prominent role at the heart of the Estate. This went unrecognised by its previous ill-defined building accesses and grass strip fronted by a low wall of little streetscape value. The new design is based on the symmetry of the building, with linear bands of low planting and a central tree avenue. Two matching plazas now announce the new entrances with adjacent black water-walls and public art installations in front. These plazas are characterised by strong coloured concrete flag linear paving, continuing out into the wider environment as raised shared surfaces (now near completion) within the street itself. Concrete block paved parking and footpaths link the plazas. This is an exemplary scheme, demonstrating the importance of considered, detailed design and execution in the public realm. The completed early phases of the project – shown here – and near-complete final phases highlight the transformative power of good landscape design and the potential of precast concrete paving. Interpave has published a case study exploring the project which, together with other case studies and guidance on various issues ranging from Sustainability to SuDS, can be downloaded via the Interpave information resource at: www.paving.org.uk

Stonemarket’s stone expert Rory Kendrick discusses the popularity of Indian sandstone and how landscapers, installers and garden designers can assess the quality of the stone they select in order to avoid performance issues. Indian sandstone has become increasingly popular over recent years. It’s an absolutely stunning product associated with a highend luxury look and customers put a great deal of perceived value or prestige in having a natural stone patio. However, there are many hundreds if not thousands of different types of sandstone available as paving in the UK and they all vary greatly in looks and performance. Many of the more commonly available varieties come from Rajasthan in India, or Shandong and Sichuan provinces in China. Sandstones can appear the same when displayed at a merchant or in a brochure, but they do have different properties and can perform very differently when installed. Laboratory testing gives you a full picture of the technical quality of stone. There are three key factors that must be considered when purchasing stone to be installed as paving in the UK and these are, water absorbency, flexural strength and frost resistance. A stone with high water absorbency will not only turn green, (a common consumer complaint with sandstone patios) but may also be more susceptible to frost action which will degrade the stone. In terms of flexural strength, a stone with poor strength means that the product could be easily damaged in transit, during the installation process, or simply by everyday use.

Splitting of the bedding planes

Surface delamination

It’s also important to consider frost resistance. A stone that loses strength when subjected to repeated frosts is far more likely to fail. There is a British Standard that covers these issues. The design and installation standard BS7533 part 12 covers the technical performance of stone, for example it provides guidance regarding the maximum water absorbency for product supplied to class 2 is 2.5%. But not all the sandstones on the market meet the British Standard. We undertook testing on a range of stones available on the market at our in-house laboratory and found only 50% met or exceeded the British Standard. Therefore, according to our testing, half of the stones readily available on the market are not technically up to scratch. This could cause a wide range of issues for landscapers and installers. To ensure you select stone which is technically up to standard, we’d advise using a supplier that tests all its products and can supply you with an in-date test certificate, or declaration of performance. If a supplier is unable to supply these details there’s no guarantee that their stone is technically sound. At Stonemarket we’ve tested all our stone to be 100% sure that every single one meets or exceeds the British Standard. Look out for ‘The Stone Standard’ trademark which indicates the product has been tested. Synonymous with quality and cutting edge design, Stonemarket is the supplier of choice to garden designers and those seeking a high-end look for their gardens and driveways.

sureset surfacing for bedford park mansions Sir John Betjeman described Bedford Park as “the most significant suburb built in the last century, probably in the western world” Located in Bedford Park, Chiswick, these beautiful mansion flats were first occupied in 1901. When initially built, Bedford Park offered a haven away from the poverty of 19th century London and set a precedent by creating a self-contained community, complete with a church, inn, shops and school. By the 1950’s Bedford Park was known as Poverty Park; it was dilapidated and many houses had been divided into flats or demolished. Bedford Park Society was established in 1963 to preserve the area and by 1970 had achieved Grade II listing for 356 properties and recognition of Bedford Park as a conservation area. The beginning of 2015 saw the commencement of an external refurbishment project at Bedford Park Mansions. The project comprised of repairs to the front and rear forecourt surfaces and improvement of the surface water drainage system.

38 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

SureSet was specified for the project, and over two days, six men installed a 517m² turning driveway on the existing asphalt surface. A 6mm Chocolate Natural Aggregate was selected; perfectly complementing the famous red bricks from Acton Brickfields, used in the construction of this magnificent building, and its attractively landscaped communal gardens. Bedford Park Mansions now has a spectacularly smooth, strong, surface suitable for vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and improved surface water drainage; no more puddles for residents of these £million mansions! Specialising exclusively in permeable resin bound paving, SureSet is an exciting, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional outdoor surfacing and indoor flooring options. Reduce the risk of failure in your public realm projects Ultrascape are surprised to hear, all too often, that BS 7533 (the standard referring to the design and construction of rigid paved areas) is still being ‘considered’ and not automatically specified. Why is this? The risks and potential costs of using a non-compliant system are huge and should be instrumental in ensuring BS 7533 is specified every time. In order for a system to ‘actually’ be proven BS 7533 compliant, rather than just ‘manufactured to meet’ or ‘manufactured in accordance with’, it must have undergone independent testing using UKAS methods (as the Ultrascape mortar paving system has), which in general ensures the following benefits: t Can be used to design and build schemes in excess of 1000 standard axles per day t Helps to protect professional indemnity insurance t Reduces costly failures and resulting personal injury claims t Trusted throughout the world t Tried and tested methods of construction t Removes the uncertainty of site batched mortars t Minimises potential workmanship issues t Ensures materials work in harmony Most significantly, the British Standard promotes professional results that can give a construction life in excess of 40 years. Overall, using a BS 7533 compliant system helps to protect your professional indemnity insurance by reducing the risk of costly failures during the life of the construction. It is evident that using a compliant system is the one and only assurance against costly repercussions. Do you need any further justification? Ultrascape offer a RIBA and RIAI approved CPD covering an understanding of BS 7533 and its importance in projects for the public realm, the cost of non-compliance, and rigid and flexible paving constructions. It offers a much greater understanding of products, materials and design possibilities that can ensure a successfully, and aesthetically pleasing regeneration project.

Shepherd’s Bush Green - Hammersmith and Fulham 7500m2 of Resin Bound Surfacing has been laid at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Green, in what is believed to be the largest single Resin Bound Surfacing project in the UK. The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham specified RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing to be laid to the paths and to paved areas within the park. This was part of a refurbishment project which included improving the routes across and around the green as well as the planting of further

**

trees and the creation of two children’s play areas.

finished surface was ready for foot traffic in four hours.

The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing system was supplied as a two-component UV stable polyurethane resin; this was mixed with the Maple Harvest aggregate which the Borough had selected. The resin components were mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle before being added to a large forced action mixer containing the aggregate. Once the aggregate was fully coated with resin, the Resin Bound Surfacing was spread to level and the surface smoothed with a steel float. The

Queen’s Walk - Lambeth In Lambeth, the Queen’s Silver Jubilee was marked with the creation of the Jubilee Walkway, an integral part of which was the introduction of pedestrian access along the south bank of the Thames, known as Queen’s Walk. As part of the preparations for the Diamond Jubilee thirty five years later, Lambeth Council made the decision to have the area ‘smartened up’. Part of this

operation was to replace the worn Resin Bound Surfacing on the Queen’s Walk between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges. RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing was laid to 2700 square metres of the five metre wide pathway and Sesame Gold aggregate was selected to brighten up the route. The Resin Bound Surfacing was completed in time for the crowds to watch the Jubilee Pageant. Now the ‘golden path’ provides a route which takes tourists and commuters past many well known buildings and locations in the capital city.

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing satisfies SuDS requirements, allowing rainwater to quickly and easily drain through the porous surface, avoiding ponding. Slip testing shows risk of slip to be low, an important consideration for busy paths and walkway like those at Shepherd’s Bush and Queen’s Walk and the slight “give” in the surfacing makes it more comfortable to walk on than harder surfaces, but it is still strong enough for heavy foot traffic and light vehicle traffic. The resin used in RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing is UV stable so will not darken or yellow with exposure to light; this makes it an

attractive choice for a wide range of paving applications. Tree protection - Hackney A tree’s root system obviously needs access to water in order for the tree to survive. However a natural earth setting is not possible in a pedestrianised street as it can get very muddy, slippery and be hard to keep leaf and litter free. Traditional tree grilles provide irrigation and protection for the tree roots but they are difficult to keep clean as litter, dog waste, cigarette stubs and even hypodermic needles get deposited or trapped between the bars.

This was the problem faced by the London Borough of Hackney officials; something was needed to protect the tree roots of the many established trees that lined its streets. Officials from the London Borough of Hackney appointed Civil Engineering Contractor Volker Fitzpatrick to solve this problem. The solution was RonaDeck Eco Tree Pit, a natural aggregate finish surround for planted trees in public and private areas, it was recommended for its SuDS compliance, ease of maintenance, and for the appearance of the resin bound gravel. Sub-contractor AJ O’Connor was appointed to install the system which has gradually been applied over a large area. RonaDeck Eco Tree Pit surrounds the tree with a resin bound aggregate surface that is easily swept clean and has a porous structure that allows rainwater to seep immediately through to the root system and reduces the burden on surface water drainage. AJ O’Connor excavated around each tree to a depth of 150-200mm and filled the excavation with gravel to within 50 mm - 75 mm of the surface, the required depth of RonaDeck Eco Tree Pit system. The two-part resin was mixed with a drill and paddle before being added to the kiln-dried aggregate component in a high capacity forced action mixer. The mixture was then laid on the prepared gravel base and levelled off.

EcoPath for Golfers - Enfield A new highly sustainable product in the RonaDeck range RonaDeck EcoPath MT was used to provide a slip resistant surface for golfers waiting at the first tee at Enfield Golf Club. The loose gravel waiting area next to the first tee at Enfield Golf Club was causing maintenance problems; the gravel was migrating to grassed areas and it became muddy and slippery in wet weather, a particular problem in the winter months. RonaDeck EcoPath MT was specified to provide a slip resistant, attractive, easily maintainable waiting area for golfers and spectators. The area also needed to be accessed safely so the design included a set of steps, surfaced with RonaDeck EcoPath MT, leading down to the tee.

As its name suggests RonaDeck EcoPath MT is sustainable, with recycled rubber tyres being used to produce the rubber granules. It is also porous; applied to Type 3 aggregate, the permeable construction is SuDS compliant. As well as helping the environment, this permeability prevents surface ponding, an important consideration for this project. RonaDeck EcoPath MT was applied to the prepared base of compacted Type 3 aggregate, levelled and smoothed with a float. The surface was allowed to cure and was ready for foot traffic within 24 hours. RonaDeck EcoPath MT provided a visually attractive and slip resistant surface for golfers and spectators to wait on while they watched the first shots being played. RonaDeck systems have also been used in sporting venues including Lords Cricket Ground, Twickenham and Wembley. Ronacrete is the only manufacturer of resin bound surfacing products that is a member of FeRFA, the resin flooring trade association.

Birch Hill Pennant stone is favoured by landscape architects for water features and rockery projects because of its attractive and robust nature. It has starred in award winning displays at both Malvern and Chelsea Flower Show. Hidden deep within the Royal Forest of Dean, Birch Hill Pennant Quarry produces masonry, building and walling stone in green, grey and blue colours, with areas of red. Pennant stone is quarried from the Carboniferous series of sandstones. It is known for its excellent strength characteristics and weather resistance. It is also used for a wide range of church conservation and listed building restoration and a number of civil applications including revetment and gabion basket stone. We are also able to supply quantities of large block stone weathered over many years and of megalithic proportion. Hammers manager Sam Allardyce, debutant Reece Burke and vice captain and longest serving current player Mark Noble opened The Dome at Great Baddow High School in Chelmsford. The development was made possible by funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities scheme, which funds the renovation and modernisation of grassroots sports facilities. WILLIAM BAIN FENCING LTD EST 1859

LOCHRIN Bain has ‘done as its clients asked’ designing innovative perimeter security products suitable for 21st century Britain. The company has invested heavily in new plant and is currently manufacturing its patented Combi and Classic fencing ranges for prestigious sites across the UK. ‘It’s what our customers wanted,’ said Sales Manager Stephen Russell. ‘Security for many of our clients is as crucial as aesthetics, and we hope that our Combi and Classic fencing range offer a solution that fits the bill.’ Palisade fencing was until recently seen by many as a dated and ugly method of securing sites, that allows intruders easy access. ‘We were receiving numerous calls regarding sites where individual pales were having fixings removed and swinging pales to the side in a pendulum motion thus allowing easy access. On some occasions these pales would be placed back in position after entry leaving sites with no clear indication of how intruders were gaining entry.’ These security issues were key in the development of the patented Lochrin ‘rivetless’ Classic design. The vertical 50 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

pales pass through V shaped slots in the horizontal rails to offer greater protection compared with a standard front fixed fence, while gaining the aesthetics of a modern railing design. The Secured By Design Combi fence evolved from the company’s work gaining Home Office accreditation. Using the unique V slot of Classic, additional security is gained by utilising a bolt counter sunk into the front face of the rail. ‘Taking a traditional product like palisade that Lochrin Bain has manufactured for over 125 years and enhancing it for today’s market has allowed us to offer an alternative to standard palisade, mesh and railing options which are just not secure enough for the job’

winning Home Office accreditation a year after launch. Turnover has increased by 40 per cent on last year’s figures and looking to new designs will help the business continue its increase in the market. ‘Yes we are seeing an upturn and being one of the UK’s top manufacturer’s means that we have the resources to meet that increase. We have become a more rounded company in the products that we have to offer to the market which is clearly an asset. We would encourage security consultants, architects and planners alike to talk to us about specific projects, and allow us to tailor a solution moving forward. It is this approach that will ensure a design that will last the test of time.’

Lochrin Bain’s reputation is built on foundations of solid Iron dating back to 1859 when the company was founded at the Iconic Lochrin Iron Works in Edinburgh. Unique product designs and modern thinking, allow the company to offer site specific solutions. From the original patented ‘rivetless’ Lochrin Classic, to the company’s flag ship Combi fence with its embedded anti-vandal bolt,

a struCture for the future usinG Cld perimeter and sports fenCinG “We are building a structure for the future, not just a team of all-stars” announced Sheikh Mansour in 2008 with reference to Manchester City Football Club. Six years and £200m later, Mansour’s vision has been realised in the Etihad Training Complex; an 80 acre site where over 450 players train each week. The site, home to 17 football pitches and a 7000 seat stadium for reserve matches, is an epitome of innovation and state of the art design that CLD Fencing Systems are proud to have contributed to. During the early stages of project conception, CLD Fencing Systems were approached by the architects to provide professional design input for the perimeter, sports fencing and gate systems which was critical to the final outcome.

52 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

Our project managers remained dedicated and focused throughout ensuring that our products complemented the Manchester City Brand and the environment they wished to create. With a comprehensive range of over 20 mesh systems, CLD Fencing Systems were not only able to deliver high security fencing to LPS1175 and Secured by Design but also products that are specially designed for sporting applications. The complex now boasts over: 3000 linear metres of CLD Securus SR1 fencing. 30 Lockmaster SR2 security gates. 800m of Ballstop Netting at 6.0m high. 500 linear metres of the spectator SportsRail. 750 linear metres of Dulok Rebound.

In order to ensure customer care stayed at the forefront, CLD Fencing Systems worked with our approved contractor and the main contractor, BAM Construction, to ensure absolute delivery of the completed product and continuity for the project. Our project managers were able to work carefully through the project specification selecting critical items ahead and issuing drawings ready for sign off. Upon completion, all operation & maintenance manuals were produced with the relevant security documentation to LPS1175 and Secured by Design. TENDERCARE Mature & Formal Hardy Plants Flower Bulbs It is very important that people who buy flower bulbs, need to be sure they are a good flowering size. Obviously the larger the bulb, the larger the growth produced and the better the result. Unfortunately, especially in some of the trade of discount retailers, where the buyer seems more interested in a low price, than giving the customer a good quality product, many customers will be disappointed with the result. The minimum bulb size e.g. for tulips should be 10/11cm, daffodils 10/12cm, rockery narcissi 8/10cm, crocus 7/8cm, hyacinths 14/15cm etc.

Special 25th anniversary celebrations at the Great Garden Festival

On the 30 June – 5 July, we saw the world’s biggest annual flower show, run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), return to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace in Surrey to celebrate the best in gardening through an eclectic mix of gardens, displays and shopping, as well as a very special silver anniversary. There was a lovely range of exciting displays to mark the 25th year of RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, including a 30 x 30m maze, which will greet visitors at the entrance to Thames Gate. The maze, designed by Tony Smith, will incorporate a mix of turf and hedging in celebration of the anniversary. An exclusive silver anniversary turf sculpture, in partnership with Rolawn, and a giant floral birthday cake courtesy of Ball Colegrave will also form part of the celebrations. This year a new zone was introduced to the Show as Feast replaces Escape to create, with Inspire and Grow, three zoned areas: t

t

t

In the Inspire zone, visitors can enjoy seven Conceptual Gardens following the theme of sensations, which will create an immersive and interactive experience. Grow will provide keen gardeners with access to a range of nursery displays, flower beds and plants for sale, as well as four new Historic Gardens. The indulgent Feast zone will house all edible and grow-your-own exhibits, an array of food stands, and the ever-popular Cookery Theatre, which this year includes a pop-up Children’s’ Cookery Class to teach kids the importance of a balanced diet.

World-class gardens ranged from the inspiring designs in the larger-scale Show Gardens to compact Summer Gardens and an exciting new category – World Gardens – which will transport visitors around the globe.

Additional show highlights this year included: t RHS Hub The RHS Hub, based in the Inspire zone, will focus on bringing families and communities together, featuring a Village Green, complete with bandstand, food stalls and an Alice in Wonderland-themed activity area full of seed sowing and cutting activities. It will also include the RHS Community Street feature, which aims to demonstrate the importance of urban regeneration, as a real-life RHS Britain in Bloom community space is selected and redesigned to show how derelict areas can be transformed through the use of plants. For younger visitors, the popular Scarecrow Competition will return with pupils from infant and primary schools across the South East each adding their own imaginative twists to traditional scarecrow designs. This year the theme is history, in keeping with the show’s anniversary. A scarecrow trail will lead the visitor from place to place over the showground, culminating at the Scarecrow Competition with a giant scarecrow as the centrepiece. t Floral Marquee The Floral Marquee hosts 90 award-winning nurseries from around the UK, including new exhibitors and native specialists, all selling the best-quality plants around. Four nurseries will focus on new, innovative ways of displaying everyone’s favourite plants. This year the Floral Marquee will also feature six brand new 3 x 3m Flower Boxes at its entrance to welcome visitors. t Plant Heritage Marquee The Plant Heritage Marquee will house eight National Plant Collection holders, offering specialist advice and plants for sale. t Festival of Roses and Floral Design Studio Carrying on the history theme, the Festival of Roses will showcase a wide range of beautiful, colourful and scented roses within a historic walled garden setting. A programme of talks and events will complement the beautiful visual displays, and the prestigious Rose of the Year 2016 will also be announced. Next door, the Floral Design Studio will display professional florists’ creations alongside the up-and-coming talent emerging from the UK’s top floristry colleges. t

RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Preview Evening Once again, the Preview Evening will start the show, taking place on Monday 29 June from 5 to 10:30pm. Visitors can spend time listening to live music with friends and family while viewing the beautiful gardens and floral displays, before tucking into a picnic or a meal in one of the restaurants. The perfect finish to the evening is a magnificent fireworks display with the stunning backdrop of Hampton Court Palace. Come and celebrate the 25th anniversary in style. Griffin Glasshouses

Celebrates Golden anniVersary

As one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of bespoke glasshouses it is not surprising that many of our customers use their Griffin Glasshouses for their rare and unusual plants as well as housing at least one of the national collections. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first ever glasshouse designed by my father, David Griffin. The business he founded remains a family owned and managed concern and my brother and cousin both work in it with me. We design and construct glasshouses across the UK, Europe and further afield. Everything we produce is bespoke with the exception of our National Gardens Scheme collection that is a range of specific, smaller structures. All the materials we use in the manufacturing process at our Ropley factory in Hampshire are of the highest quality and many of the features are specifically designed by us and unique to our brand. This includes our full-length automated opening and ventilation system, the Victorian styled spandrels used in many of our glasshouses and the hidden rain water collection system than can be channelled into underground storage tanks and pumped up for irrigation and watering. All of our frames are made from the highest quality, maintenance free aluminium which is powder coated in any paint colour. All bolts and fixings are completely hidden. We specifically match a wood look-alike finish so that Griffin Glasshouses appear to be traditional but have the very latest, low maintenance finish. We have, over the past five years, identified a growing trend for glasshouses with a Victorian design and the majority of our work is within this category. Although harking back to bygone days, these glasshouses are thoroughly 21st century in design and maintenance. Many have highly decorative spandrels, steep pitches to roofs, narrow glass panes and highly decorative finials at the ends of the ridge. This year, as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, we have launched a range of glasshouse work benches with Victorian-styled cast-aluminium legs and corner details. It is part of our drive to generate maximum authenticity but without the high levels of maintenance associated with historic structures of this type. An increasing amount of work is from gardeners having to replace comparatively modern wooden greenhouses that have simply rotted away. We regularly work with historic homes and gardens where they often have to replace very old garden structures whilst maintaining the style of the original.

Journalist and television presenter Janet Street-Porter helped Griffin Glasshouses mark its 50th anniversary at the Chelsea Flower Show by cutting the anniversary cake alongside Linda Lane, managing director, Griffin Glasshouses.

It is challenging and often unusual work. We have built glasshouses around large trees and created one with sufficient height and ventilation to ensure that the fresh-air flowed over a mini mountain on which the owner grew Alpine plants. We regularly build them in gardens that open for the National Gardens Scheme. No two days or glasshouses are the same and that is what we all find so fascinating and exciting.

Three female designers have come together to create a show garden for the charity Wellbeing of Women at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this year which is celebrating 25 years. Claire Moreno, Amy Robertson and Wendy Von Buren met while studying at the Garden Design School at Painshill Park in 2012. They kept in touch after qualifying, and after Wendy attended a charity function hosted by the Wellbeing of Women charity, discovered a shared passion to create an RHS show garden with a purpose. Previously known as Birthright, Wellbeing of Women was founded in 1964 and has since pioneered the research which has resulted in many of the healthcare interventions for women which are taken for granted today. From increasing survival rates in premature babies and the introduction of fetal scanning in pregnancy to the importance of folic acid, both when planning to conceive and during pregnancy, Wellbeing also funded the research which identified the link between cervical cancer and the human papilloma virus, against which teenage girls are now offered immunisation. Wellbeing of Women has touched the lives of millions of women with its long history of funding ground-breaking medical research into women’s health concerns - over the last 50 years the charity has significantly improved the health of women and their families. Other areas of research include pregnancy and birth (including IVF, miscarriage and preterm birth), and quality of life issues, such as menopause, which affect the daily lives of women all across the UK. Discussing the work of Wellbeing of Women, Claire, Wendy and Amy found that they all had personal experiences that connected them to the charity. It was from this discussion that the idea for an RHS Hampton Court Flower Show Garden was developed.

WELLBEING OF WOMEN The garden, which will feature in the Summer Garden Category at the Show this month, will be feminine but unfussy in design, using plants and flowers in purple, blue and white to echo the charity's logo. The planting used in the garden promotes well-being, through medicinal, aromatic or sensory properties, to reflect the charity’s work in funding medical scientific research. Due to the very personal nature of female health issues or illnesses, the women affected can often feel very isolated. Subsequently, the designers wanted to create a garden where not only some of these issues were addressed but also highlighted the existence of a charity such as Wellbeing of Women which funds much needed research. At the centre of the garden there will be a raised small circular terrace, representing the circle of life with a curved stepping stone path signifying the journey leading it. Each of the five stepping stones will be engraved with a decade, from the 60s to the present day, marking the significant research journey funded by Wellbeing of Women over the last 50 years. The three designers wanted this simple circular patio to create an intimate seating area where people could come together and talk about the charity and its work, with the charity’s motto engraved: "Our

62 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

research for your family's future", providing an additional focus. The designers fell in love with the work of artist Rachel Dein, who runs ‘Tactile Studio’ and whose casts of flowers and plants in clay and concrete, create beautiful botanical panels. These panels will be used in the garden as a way to poignantly capture something which is beautiful but no longer alive; in the same way that a scan of a baby who has been lost due to miscarriage or stillbirth, or photos of women who have died from gynecological cancers, can provide comfort to grieving families. In sharp contrast to these panels, a section of a Living Wall by Biotecture was chosen by Wendy, Claire and Amy to make up part of the other boundary in the garden. This ‘living wall’ represents the surviving women, children and families that the charity's work has helped, similar to the thriving plants. The most difficult challenge for the designers was to fund the building of the garden. Having appealed for help, Wendy, Amy and Claire have

been completely overwhelmed at the response from companies to help fund the garden. Nearly every feature in or aspect of the garden has either been donated or lent for the duration of the show; sawn natural stone paving from London Stone, fencing from Jackson’s Fencing’s Venetian range, three multi-stemmed silver birch from Hedgeworx, and an Urbis water bowl to name just a few. The most significant donation has been from Paul Tattersall of Tattersall Landscapes in Kent, who generously agreed to build the garden for free, for which the designers will be eternally grateful. Having given themselves such tight parameters for the choice of plants, the designers decided to appoint one nursery to grow them, selecting The Plant Co in Pulburough, West Sussex. With many years experience in exhibiting and selling at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, their help has proven invaluable and Claire, Amy and Wendy have particularly enjoyed regularly popping in to check on the plants’ progress. Although the garden will ultimately be judged by the RHS, the main hope for the three designers’ is that the garden will be enjoyed by the show’s visitors and that the work of the Wellbeing of Women charity is more widely recognised and supported.

sCotsCape WorKinG With professor niGel dunnett Scotscape are working with the highly acclaimed Nigel Dunnett to install a vertical meadow at this year’s Royal Hampton Court Flower Show in The Community Street Feature which champions the RHS campaign ‘Greening Grey Britain’, using cutting-edge science to show how plants can combat urban pollution. Vertical meadows are a natural progression for Scotscape, further adding to the extensive portfolio of vertical greening options available from the company, Angus Cunningham says ‘For some time now, I have relished the opportunity to demonstrate how wonderful vertical meadows can look and the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show offers us the perfect showcase platform. There is so little ground level space left in which to plant in the centre of Cities. What a wonderful thought it would be to introduce a vertical meadow into the centre of a city. Vertical greening is the way forward not only offering beautiful aesthetics and air quality benefits, but also as a viable vehicle for the reintroduction of birds, bugs and bees into built up areas’. The garden’s aim is to raise awareness of air pollution, being a significant risk factor for a number of health conditions including respiratory infections, heart disease, strokes and lung cancer, as well as being absorbed by urban crops and food in gardens. As up-to-date research dictates, plants can absorb gaseous air pollutants and, in particular, broad-leaved trees are the most effective at this, because of their size and leaf shape. It is effectively a showcase of environmentally-aware but beautiful, dense planting. Multi-layered shrubs are good for absorbing vehicle pollution, a mix of evergreens and broad-leaved deciduous trees, as well as hedges and living walls can be effective additions to otherwise sterile gardens. Professor Nigel Dunnett says: ‘Now, more than ever, it is essential that we champion the role of horticulture, gardens and plants as being in the vanguard of how we address the multiple challenges of climate change in our built environments. We need to fill our cities with plants, and to be radical and innovative in how we do it. We need to start a revolution! With the RHS Hampton Court garden we aim to show how this can be done in even the smallest of places, in community spaces, in private gardens, and in the wider public realm.’ This opportunity has arisen at the time when Scotscape are also trialling specialist vertical planting schemes with the registered charity ‘Buglife’ to encourage a ‘bee highway’ into London using our Living Walls as staging posts into City Centres. www.scotscapelivingwalls.net 0208 254 5000 sales@scotscape.net

Anglo-Dutch “greener cities” initiAtive tAkes root with first innovAtion DAy Roxana de Raad, Chief Representative at the Netherlands Business Support Office (NBSO) in Manchester reviews the highly successful Greener Cities event in May. “The idea behind the Greener Cities event was to show NBSO’s commitment to working with the local business community in the UK’s Northern cities. It was also an excellent opportunity to promote the Netherlands’ experience and expertise in regenerating urban environments through innovative design and landscaping. We want to encourage UK and Dutch companies and government bodies to work together to support practical, cost effective projects to make the local cities greener.”

The Greener Cities: Urban

Landscaping Innovation Day was held in Manchester on 13 May. The day started with presentations from Dutch business leaders with

66 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

proven expertise in transforming urban landscapes. It was the launch of what we hope will be a series of long term, mutually profitable business partnerships between Dutch and British companies. In particular, it demonstrated many innovative ways to create sustainable green spaces in urban areas. The afternoon programme was joined by the then Lord Mayor of Manchester, Susan Cooley, who planted a tree donated by Ebben Tree Nurseries in Manchester’s Cathedral Gardens, as well as accepting four flower boxes donated by Village Sensation. The Dutch bulb company JUB Holland also donated 25,000 bee-friendly bulbs to promote biodiversity, which community groups will plant across the city. In the afternoon delegates from British and Dutch companies watched a demonstration of innovative Dutch machinery planting a further 25,000 summer flowering bulbs in Walton Gardens, Warrington.

The Lord Mayor, Susan Cooley, commented during the ceremony: “These beautiful gifts will help to brighten up our city and I am delighted to accept them on behalf of the people of Manchester”. The NBSO organised the day to highlight its commitment to working with the local business community. “The Dutch Government sees the potential of the UK’s Northern cities,” says Roxana de Raad, Chief Representative at the NBSO’s Manchester office. “It’s why we have an official business office here. We also want to contribute to local policies that help make the city centres more attractive to businesses and residents. This includes looking at innovative ways to re-generate green spaces in an easy, sustainable and cost effective way. The Netherlands has pioneered a number of new green technologies and products to bring these goals within easy reach, and yesterday’s Innovation day offered a great opportunity to share best practices between the two countries.”

The positive energy of flowers and plants JUB Holland have been heavily involved

in several UK projects, including providing the bulbs for this year’s Tulips for Liberators flower mosaics in Kew Gardens and Lincoln Cathedral to mark the 70th anniversary of the Allied liberation of the Netherlands. JUB demonstrated their bulb planting machinery in Warrington’s Walton Gardens, as part of our Greener Cities day, and they donated 50,000 bulbs for planting across Manchester and nearby Warrington.

“With our special planting machines a local council can plant 25,000 bulbs an hour in grass as opposed to around 5,000 a day with manual planting,” explains JUB’s Robbert Uittenbogaard. The bulbs were JUB’s “Happy Bee Mixture”, which have been designated “bee-friendly” by The British Bee keepers Association for their biodiversity credentials. They are also “budget-friendly” as the bulbs will flower over a period of up to six months, so you save money on mowing, and they will last for a minimum of ten years. We were also delighted to welcome

and plants. As well as the familiar flower boxes and hanging baskets, councils and companies can buy or rent their low maintenance, mobile flower towers that, generally, don’t need planning permission. “The towers use just six to eight plants,” explains Jos Smit of Village Sensation; “making them stronger. So, you get more flowers with less work.” “Flowers and plants are very important to people’s well-being,” continues Jos. “Research shows that crime is lower when the environment appears well cared for and friendly. So, we were happy to donate four large, mobile planters to the City of Manchester as part of this important project.”

Dutch and UK companies working together Ebben Tree Nurseries in Cuijk, the Netherlands has been growing their distinctive range of environmentallyfriendly trees and shrubs since 1862. “Our trees and plants come in many shapes, sizes and colours and suit a variety of soil types, “ says Marko Mouwen of Ebben. “As such, they have many different uses. We are always happy to share knowledge with our UK partners to ensure we create the right atmosphere, encourage biodiversity and make best use of the existing infrastructure. Due to the unique composition of our nursery’s soil and the absence of stones, we find that our UK partners are particularly impressed by how well the new tree types thrive in British soil.” Ebben generously donated a multi-stem Purple leaved tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima / "purple dragon") to the City of Manchester, which the Lord Mayor planted in the city’s Cathedral Gardens on our Greener Cities day. Mecanoo, a leading architecture practice based in Delft with an office in Manchester, presented their vision of how architecture, urban planning and landscaping can combine to create greener, healthier cities. They drew on their experience of taking the infrastructure of a city and making it greener with roof gardens and parklets (mini gardens in parking spaces). This vision can be seen in two impressive Mecanoo projects in Manchester; the design of HOME, a lively cultural venue, and the green spaces of NOMA, one the largest regeneration projects in the UK with 20 acres of mixed use space. Ongoing work includes the £200m University of Manchester Engineering Campus due for completion in 2019.

Sharing best practice The Netherlands has pioneered technologies and products to help make cities greener and more attractive to businesses and residents. And, the Dutch government fully recognises the great business potential of the UK’s Northern cities; that’s why the NBSO has opened its official UK office in Manchester. After the success of this first Greener Cities event, we are keen to continue building relationships and sharing best practice with public and private organisations in the landscaping and gardens sector. If you have any questions or would like further information or photographs of the Greener Cities event please contact Roxana de Raad or Els Steiger at the NBSO on +44 (0) 161 834 6033. 2. Opportunity for investors

The redevelopment of Folkestone Harbour and Sefront offers a unique opportunity to develop a high quality mixed use development, in a prominent location on the South Coast, that is less an hour from London via high speed rail services linking Folkestone to London to St Pancras. The planning permission for the site allows for the development of up to 1000 residential units, a mix of commercial floorspace totalling 10,000 sq.m. as well as place shaping and value enhancing complimentrary facilities including seasports and beach sports facilities and a network of high quality public spaces.

3. Detail

The ambition for Folkestone Seafront is to re-establish a vibrant seafront quarter for Folkestone with a dynamic harbour area through the provision of a mix of leisure and residential uses. It is intended that the seafront will become a place to live and work with high quality residential accommodation and a mix of leisure and entertainment facilities offering a unique coastal setting for sports, arts and recreation attractions. As such the development offers a unique investment opportunity whereby the overall quality of the development, its location (Folkestone to London less than an hour on HS1) and the mix of uses proposed has the potential to greatly enhance the sale/rental values associated with the scheme and therefore the financial return to an investor. Values are further enhanced by the presence of the neighbouring Creative Quarter and Folkestone Coastal Park .

Useful sources of SuDS Information, Guidance and SuDS best practice case studies: Engineering Nature’s Way: www.engineeringnaturesway.co.uk – Hydro International’s knowledge-sharing resource for SuDS. www.susdrain.org: a community with a range of resources for those involved in delivery of SuDS, created by CIRIA. What Makes SuDS Best Practice? By Alex Stephenson, Group Market Development Director, Hydro International and chair of the British Water Sustainable Water Management Group. Regulating the use of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) in new development has long been a hard fought-for aspiration. From April 2015, new regulations are finally in force in England. Will they help to guide good design, construction and maintenance of SuDS? Planning authorities are now responsible for overseeing an ‘expectation’ for SuDS to be built on new developments of 10 properties or more, as part the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). The change should usher in a more sensible, “back to basics” approach for SuDS with principles that have been well established for many years. The Government’s revised plans leave all professionals concerned to understand the implications and what will constitute good practice in SuDS installation, adoption and maintenance. What Design Guidance Is Available for SuDS? The need for everyone involved to share and learn from best practice is fundamental to future acceptance and successful delivery of SuDS. Many local authorities, and some water companies, have developed their own design guidance which provide excellent sources of reference. CIRIA’s expected update to C697, the SuDS manual will be more important than ever in providing a national framework for best practice. Industry resources such as the Engineering Nature’s Way and Susdrain websites provide a good source of reference, industry news and comment, as well as policy updates and links to resources such as design guidance and online design tools. Top Five Tips for SuDS Best Practice 1. Start early: SuDS plans should be incorporated right from the start of a project, preferably during masterplanning and guided by the Local Plan. Close working relationships are needed from the start between landscape architects, drainage designers, developers, Lead Local

2. 3.

5.

Flood Authorities (LLFAs), water companies and the Environment Agency. Engage the community: Getting local people passionate and involved in sustainable surface water management has been shown to be highly effective in achieving successful schemes. Use the full SuDS toolbox: Create a surface water management train using the most appropriate ‘natural’ and manufactured components taking into account the space available for storage, the ground conditions, the level of pollutants present, the level of infiltration that is possible and so on. Plan predictable and repeatable maintenance. The new planning rules for England place a much greater responsibility on developers to show how SuDS schemes will be maintained effectively throughout their life. Ensuring that SuDS continue to perform requires skilled ground maintenance, as well as following manufacturers’ schedules for inspection and maintenance of proprietary systems. Insist on Quality Contractors: Construction of a SuDS infrastructure can require a different skillset for contractors from conventional drainage approaches. Especially for natural SuDS features, incorrect construction can mean the drainage does not perform as designed from the outset.

Grilles and Benches The appearance of public spatial design is just as important as providing comfort and care to people and greenery. Where comfort and care for tree and humans come together the Streetlife Collection offers a range of products that can be combined in harmony. A comfortable bench acts as a rest point and a meeting place, it has a gravitational pull. Shaded seating areas on the edge of a square offers an attractive place to enjoy the liveliness. Trees provide protection against the sun, however, the location of the tree is sensitive and vulnerable. Using a tree grille to shield them with a lattice of thick CorTen steel is an ideal way to give trees protection and care in a crowded outdoor space. An attractive and playful architectural plan is realised with circle elements of Streetlife. The flowing lines of the Rough & Ready Curve bench is implemented together with a tree grate strip: creating a playful and original image.

Streetlife products are designed to encourage combinations: CorTen tree grids, R&R Circuit Bank and R&R bicycle brackets.

Grill Bench mounted on a square CorTen tree grid with Casual Dots pattern.

The R&R Carre Bank with central tree hole. Can be executed with or without CorTen tree grille

CorTen steel The application of CorTen steel in public space helps to create a warm and natural image. multi sector product Crossover LANGLEY DESIGN will already be well-known to Landscape Architects working in the education sector. For twenty years Langley Design have been supplying well designed and manufactured quality street furniture. Their range of products gives the contractor a ‘complete package approach’ enabling all elements of the external furniture requirements to come from one source helping reduce cost and time spent liaising between suppliers. When the new offices for Hitachi Capital required external furniture for the staff relaxation areas, Langley Design were asked to put forward a collection of cost effective hard wearing products that fitted with the design style of the modern building and met with the architects (Macgregor Smith) approval. The selection of products from the Sheldon range visually matched the sleek modern aspect of the project, creating a synergy between the building and the landscaped areas. The materials chosen, a galvanised steel framework and FSC Hardwood Iroko timber slats would mellow with the building and provide a facility that could be used all year round. For Langley Design this was just another example of where their products, which had been designed originally for the Education sector, could be used in commercial or retail applications. Not only is there a crossover of uses between sectors but by manufacturing all products to order they can offer a bespoke design service to produce new furniture items or make slight variations on standard products to adjust the product to the exact needs of the project. The company have built up considerable skill and resource over time and now offer a complete range of street furniture. This allows the company to produce a selection of product options for the client to choose from to best suit their needs, whether concerns centre around costing, design style or materials used. They have a responsive approach to designing products to match designers’ intentions, with the ability to produce samples and prototypes for approval if required. The range of cycle shelters, bin stores and external enclosures that Langley Design have developed is impressive and the way that these products can be used across a range of projects and sectors, only confirms the products suitability. In recent university, commercial and MOD projects the company has provided steel and timber structures that are pleasant to the eye and sit naturally within the landscape. Designed to specific site requirements and taking into account the number of cycles needing to be housed, the designs can incorporate bin store areas as well, combining enclosure purposes making further cost savings. This was achieved with great success at the University of Hertfordshire and Project Hercules at DTCCP Lyneham.

The Bracknell enterprise centre has undergone a landscape makeover creating a series of carefully designed planted spaces that help soften the car parking areas and provide an attractive entrance to the surrounding offices. This was created with the use of hard and soft elements including gravel and paved pathways surrounded with new planting of trees and hardy shrubs. Seating was also required and benches from our Shoreline range were chosen to compliment the general theme of this project as they are built from a combination of 316 stainless steel and FCA sourced Iroko timber.

As each area required a different length bench, it was a simple task of measuring the space and manufacturing to suit. The Shoreline range has been designed in such a way that it can easily be adapted to meet the specific needs of each client. The overall scheme has provided an attractive outlook which all the offices can enjoy throughout the year and with the addition of our seating, a pleasant place to enjoy those alfresco lunchtimes. Commended for best public space in the NLA’s New London Awards in July 2014. Brown Hart Gardens is an elevated public square over a Grade II listed substation, located in the heart of Mayfair, London. Furnitubes designers worked closely with the project team at BDP Landscape Architects to develop over sixty bespoke seating and planter units for the site. Three basic design modules were supplied – elegant heavy duty fixed seats for the perimeter of the site, and planters and benches for the central deck area which could be moved around to allow the space to be adaptable for a variety of events. The site has created a beautiful and flexible space that has proven to be extremely popular with residents, visitors and workers of the city.

CHECK OUT FONO FIRST DJ BOOTH SUITABLE FOR OUTDOOR SPACES

F

ono is a meeting point for youngsters with a DJ system at its centre. With Fono we mirror the current trends our youths enjoy. Examples of these trends are the frequent use of mobile phones, the listening and sharing of music and hanging around with friends. This DJ system challenges teens to express their musical creativity and make music which they can edit and share through their phone. Developed in association with many DJs, Fono replicates a professional DJ system specifically designed to be very easy to use. To make it work, you only need to place a mobile phone playing music onto the pad. Sound will automatically amplify and play live. This smart new concept of play has been initiated by Dutch company Yalp Interactive, where they have come up with this

84 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

imaginative product that offers a positive and safe spot for teens to socialise and express themselves. Fono generates an immediate ‘wow’ factor that fascinates both youths and adults alike due to its unique characteristics. Add effects to the music like an echo or crossfader. Very recognizable are the black, turnable disks to scratch. Because Fono has two music players it is possible to mix two different songs. With Fono you can be a real DJ for a moment! In terms of location, Fono is suitable for both outdoor and indoor use. Outdoors, Fono will create a more teenager-focused area; an original music and hangout spot for them to enjoy. Fono would perfectly complement a MUGA or a skate park. Indoors, this DJ station can be a unique spot in shopping malls, leisure centres or even airports. The possibilities are endless.

From a landscape and design point of view, Fono adds a fresh and modern look to urban areas. Winner of the Red Dot design award in 2014, competing against 4,815 entries from 53 countries, Fono has been internationally recognised by its exceptional functional design and robust and modern appearance. Expanding across the world As well as in the UK, Fono is sold in Australia, China, Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands. Bracknell Town Council in Berkshire were the first council to join the Fono movement in the UK. The DJ booth can be found at Mill Park in Bracknell and they are absolutely delighted with it. Bracknell Town Council Recreational Facilities Manager Allan Moffat commented: “We wanted to give teenagers a place to meet with their friends and hang out. Fono

is a great addition; we are very pleased we’ve added it into our park”. Noise is not an issue For noise concerns, Fono comes with adjustable settings that allow you to choose the hours that the product can be used giving you total control. The Fono has been specially designed to contain sound. However, this can also be

controlled with variable sound levels. Allan Moffat added “We were a little worried about the noise levels but this has proven not to be a concern and we are very pleased with the noise”. Likewise, due to its heavy duty construction and a steel case to protect the incorporated technology, this unit is highly resistant to vandalism and has passed many tests to prove it is perfectly suitable for outdoor areas.

INTERACTIVE: THE FUTURE OF PLAY Besides Fono, the interactive games range has more to offer: Sona, a musical arch with different games to get everyone moving and dancing and Sutu, a sports wall that gives constant feedback to players with LED lights and sounds.

The DJ booth can be complemented with corner rails and chill out benches (shown above), which can be customised and added to the main unit for a complete hangout spot.

WiCKsteed baCKs timberplay for ramped up play offerinG. Wicksteed Park are ready for the onset of summer, with new water play equipment supplied by children’s play specialists Timberplay. Established in 1921, Wicksteed Park was the first dedicated children’s play park in the UK, created with equipment specifically for children set in the 147 acre country park. The popular destination park has been boosted with the addition of waterplay and sand play – set to delight children throughout the next few months of blistering sunshine. All the delights of beach play have been encapsulated into the new designs for the landlocked park. An extensive sand play area includes cranes, chutes, tippers, platforms and cranes, perfect for transportation play. It is also the site of the first AQuadrat in the UK, a flexible modular waterplay system made from solid oak timber, with mushroom pump and metal gutters. Alasdair McNee, Director comments:“Since its inception, Wicksteed has been about delivering the best in children’s play – inspiring children to get out and enjoy the park by providing specialist equipment specifically for children. Over the years the park has evolved, adding varied play equipment, roller coasters and rides to complement the tranquillity of the historic park. This new addition is extremely popular and has been mobbed since it opened, with children, parents and carers camping out for the day. We have many and varied play opportunities throughout the park, but waterplay was one thing we knew would be a very popular addition with our users – and that has certainly been proved to be the case.”

88 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

Wicksteed attracts 350,000 visitors per year and is free to enter. There are a number of paid for attractions, but the water and sand play is free for all park users. Alongside the extensive sand play area, AQuadrat and waterplay there is also a number of pieces created for toddlers, for example the Platform Houses and Peter Horse Cart and Swinging Horse, all grouped in a Play Village. The Kettering Park was founded in 1921 by Charles Wicksteed as realising his vision to inspire and encourage play as part of families’ health and well-being. He established The Wicksteed Charitable Trust to carry out his work after his death and keep his dream alive.

uniQue play transported to raf medmenham!

On the 29th May 2015 Proludic opened their latest play park at RAF Medmenham in Buckinghamshire. Opened by the Station Commander and celebrated by the whole community it was a wonderful occasion to celebrate the culmination of many months work to bring this new play park to its’ completion. Proludic worked in partnership with RAF Medmenham from the initial consultation to ensure the community were heavily involved in deciding the type of equipment and overall design they most wanted. The play park is located next to the ‘Hive’ coffee shop, a community facility run by volunteers to provide a focal point for families, the improvement to the play space and subsequent increase in families visiting the play park has already seen an increase in the use of this essential local facility. The RAF base wanted a play space that was innovative and challenging for a broader age range, ensuring it provided for children of all ages and abilities. Proludic were chosen to work on the project due to their extensive experience in delivering other successful RAF sites and designed a unique transport themed play park.

90 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

The play park prior to development was poorly laid out lacking the priority children needed to play safely within the designated space. The new design addressed this to ensure age appropriate play spaces were created. The under-fives area is separated from the junior and teen elements to ensure all children are able to play within an environment that is appropriate to their own social and emotional needs. Some great features worth highlighting in the scheme are the themed multi play units which provide excellent role play opportunities for younger children. A transport theme was featured which also continued through to the surfacing. Located between Marlow and Henley we embraced the Genius loci including images of the river and local transportation so children can play and use their imagination outside of the stimulation provided by the fixed play equipment structures. The whole park took ten months to complete from the initial consultation to the opening which marks a great achievement from all parties involved. “Working with Proludic throughout the entire Medmenham playpark project has been quite simply a delight. Overall, a superb effort by an outstanding team, on budget, on time - Thank you!” Squadron Leader Craig Kirk, RAF Medmenham

Play Safety

PAGE TITLE sub I title I info

Water Play The use of water in play has often been neglected. However, provided that basic hygiene precautions are taken, it has high play value. Whether it is the recently developed water jet systems based on wet pour surfacing, or simpler systems where children can just splash with their hands, there is a lot of enjoyment to be had. Whilst the water jet systems can be expensive (and to a certain extent need good weather to be useable) they do provide an exciting and safer alternative to the old fashioned paddling pools. Simpler systems that could just involve a few millimetres of running water are cheaper. They also have the advantage that they help to develop hand and finger dexterity among younger children. If you are planning to install water play in any form you are advised to consult RoSPA about the designs before proceeding.

Timber Play Imaginative use of timber in play areas is increasing. In the past it has just been used as an alternative to metal and has been used in a similar manner. However, recent developments are using timber in a more “natural way to give a less formal look. Play areas can be made to look more interesting and simple measures can add extra play value. Even the replacement of a standard seat with a carved log with animal footprints carved into the surface turns a utilitarian item into something exciting which also has good tactile experience; especially for those with visual impairment. Living structures such as willow features can give children some of the experiences the older ones among us will remember; from the less constricted times when we were children.

RoSPA advise on and inspect play areas using both timber and water play.

huCK maKes a splash in the leys, Witney Huck Nets, based in Dorset, has been selected to design, supply and install the new adventure playground on the recreational space at The Leys in Witney, Oxfordshire. The £250K project commissioned by Witney Town Council will also include a new Splash Park. The design has been agreed and the installation is to take place in June 2015. The Leys Memorial Park play area, which is over 40 years old, had been enjoyed by generations of Witney children but was losing popularity due to being in a desperate need of an update. The play area was built up of old and not so old items of play equipment. The majority of the equipment offered little play value and had reached the end of its lifespan. Instead of just going for remedial work by Witney Town Council, the residents joined together and formed a group called ‘Liven up the Leys’ (LUTL) and started their campaign to raise funds and create a new modern play area including a splash park. The group set themselves the task of raising £20,000 towards the fund. Huck Nets were first contacted by Witney Town Council in 2014 as they were looking for a centre piece for the main play area. “We worked together with Witney Town Council and came up with a bespoke designed dual unit packed with play value. This unit was exhibited at Saltex 2014 and then taken

back to the factory to be stored until the park was ready for the installation. Later in the year, Witney TC released a tender for the design and installation of a new play area at The Leys which was to incorporate the Huck bespoke unit.” said Huck’s Play and Design Manager, Tony Lucas. The tender was to design, supply and install an adventurous play area for children of different ages and physical abilities. The design and play equipment should enhance the natural appearance and beauty of the Leys recreational space, as well as being both challenging and stimulating for upwards of 300 users a day. After a tough screening process, which included extensive consultation with park users and an open day alongside other play equipment suppliers for local residents, Huck’s design and proposal was selected. “We have been working alongside Witney Town Council throughout to ensure that they get exactly what they, and the community want.” said Tony Lucas “The existing shelter and supa-nova spinner will be retained and relocated within the new Leys scheme. We are complementing our rope and net based playground equipment with specialist equipment from other playground OEMs and are working with SSP Water & Play, who have been selected to supply the Splash Park, to ensure that the two schemes work together.”

Wakefield Council recently opened a new play area designed and installed by Yorkshire based Sutcliffe Play. The new £60,000 play area at Friarwood Valley Gardens has created a natural themed area within the gardens that is designed to attract young children and families to picnic and play. The area was developed following consultation with local volunteer group Friends of Friarwood Valley Gardens, and features a wide range of equipment for toddlers and juniors including Sutcliffe Play’s new Orchard equipment. Orchard is a range of environmentally friendly play equipment which encourages physical and imaginative play and social interaction. The wood-based units are designed to complement natural play settings like Friarwood Valley Gardens. A range of inclusive equipment has also been installed to allow children of all abilities to play side-by-side with each other.

Wakefield Council secured a £60,000 grant for the development of the new play area from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd, a non-profit making Environmental Body registered to fund profits which are eligible under the Landfill Communities Fund). Cllr Maureen Cummings, Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities at Wakefield Council said at Wakefield Council says: “Friarwood Valley Gardens is a designated Grade II Historic Garden and Conservation area so it is important that the play area reflects the natural theme of the gardens. We’ve worked closely with Friends of Friarwood Valley Gardens to ensure the new area complements the environment. “We believe the new play and picnic area will have a long-lasting positive impact on the local community. Alongside new and exciting play opportunities for children the new seating and picnic benches will encourage a whole new user group of families and young children.”

to 42,500 square feet per hour. Prices of the new Plugr aerators start from £1999.99 including VAT.

Over time, particularly with heavy use, soil can become compacted which prevents air, water and nutrients from circulating throughout the soil. Ultimately this leads to damaged, unsightly and useable turf.

Billy Goat products are exclusively available in the UK through Henton & Chattell dealers nationwide. Henton & Chattell are the leading distributors for garden machinery brands in the UK, offering a number of exclusive product ranges to garden machinery dealers.

Plugr aerators from Billy Goat offer a solution to this that can improve drainage and promote new growth. The process of aeration helps to relieve the pressure, making holes throughout the lawn to allow air to circulate around the roots. This in turn, encourages grass to grow stronger creating a healthier turf. There are four new Plugr aerators in the Billy Goat range, in addition to the three original Billy Goat aerators. These are the PL1800 (with either a 205cc Briggs & Stratton engine, or a 118cc Honda engine), or the PL2500 (with a 163cc Honda engine, or a 196cc Honda/Hydro Drive). The PL1800 has an 18” working width, along with four tines and weighs just 109kg. It is ideal for smaller properties or rental scenarios, and places cores 2.75” deep and aerates 22,000 square feet per hour. It has an easy folding handle that allows for compact use, transportation and storage. The PL2500 is perhaps suited for more intense usage. It has a 25” working width and eight reciprocating cam driven tines that punch to core depths of 2.75”. It can deliver aeration to up

After a busy start to 2015 on projects nationwide, Turfdry has returned to The Rayleigh Club in Essex, following the tremendous success of 2014’s installation of the Turfdry Drainage System on all 18 holes of the championship standard South Course.

and excavators equipped with lasercontrol systems and GPS. This approach, combined with finishing touches from skilled plant operators, enabled Turfdry to transform visions into reality.

The club’s current owner, Jamie Saitch, who bought the club in 2011, had recognised that widespread waterlogging problems – which had caused course closures for up to three months of the year - were the main stumbling-block to his aim of making The Rayleigh Club the destination for golf in Essex.

but also by discussions with the club’s management and green-keeping staff, to capitalise on their extensive experience of the course. The final approved design has Hydraway Sportsdrain at 4 or 5 metre spacing, from tee to green on every hole, thereby balancing optimum technical efficiency with cost-effectiveness.

After considering proposals from various drainage companies, he was impressed by Turfdry’s enthusiasm and professionalism, as well as their unique Turfdry Drainage System using Hydraway Sportsdrain. This quality product drains water three-times faster than the conventional plastic pipe, and can be installed in trenches only 50mm wide, thereby combining maximum drainage efficiency with minimum disruption to the existing turf.

Turfdry’s extensive experience of careful project planning, combined with the strong working relationship established with the club’s green-keeping staff, facilitated a smooth operation, with 16 or 17 holes remaining in play at any time during the summer of 2014. Indeed, many members took a break from play to compliment the tidiness and efficiency of the process.

Delighted with the effectiveness of the drainage over the winter of 2014/15, the client has re-engaged Turfdry to design and implement drainage improvements to the East Course, and expand the earthworks element on the South Course to include reshaping existing ponds, the expansion of new ponds into even more dramatic designs, tee construction, and course landscaping.

With the scale of the task so significant – MD Melvyn Taylor describing it as one of the wettest courses he had seen in 20 years of Turfdry operations - the design process was aided not only by a stateof-the art satellite survey of the site,

104 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

Turfdry were also contracted to design and construct additional ponds across the course. Using the satellite survey data, 3D models and computer-generated images were created to enable design approval by the owner; these computer models are then fed into state of the art bulldozers

The tremendous success of Turfdry’s work at The Rayleigh Club can be attributed not only to the cutting-edge technology used in the design, construction and installation process – and the unique Turfdry Drainage System - but also to Turfdry’s belief in a holistic approach to course improvements. By taking the time to develop a strong understanding of the course and the goals of the owner, Turfdry has provided cost-effective solutions to wide-ranging problems in an atmosphere of clarity, collaboration, and trust.

P I T C H C O N S T R U C T I O N S T O K E - O N - T R E N T Continuing its strong working relationship with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Turfdry undertook a ‘Design & Build’ project that saw the creation of three football pitches adjacent to Hanley Town FC’s pitch in Abbey Hulton. The construction process was complicated by the site’s history as a dumping ground for mining waste, which left the subterranean conditions far from ideal. In addition to substantial debris buried beneath the surface, significant problems with groundwater and running sand were encountered, which meant that parts of the site could not even be walked on. This was overcome by the installation of a ‘deep-drainage’ system, which de-watered the site and allowed construction to continue, which included the installation of Turfdry Drainage Systems using Hydraway Sportsdrain, in all three pitches. Despite the problems faced during construction, a recent independent site assessment visit by Kevin Duffill, West Midlands Regional Advisor for the Institute of Groundsmanship, confirmed that progress has been excellent, and that the Council will receive excellent new facilities at August 2015’s handover.

T U R F D R A I N A G E C H E L S E A P H Y S I C G A R D E N Turfdry was recently contacted by the historic and prestigious Chelsea Physic Garden – the oldest botanic garden in the capital, under Grade 1 Listed protection and with HRH The Prince of Wales as patron– due to considerable waterlogging issues on its marquee lawn. The works needed completion in time for the impending 2015 opening, so speed - as well as the close care and attention demanded by a site with such rich heritage - was required. Particular attention was paid to the protection of the trees and their roots, and special care had to be taken to ensure the site’s valuable topsoil was preserved without contamination. This was complicated by the tight nature of the site, which demanded careful planning and execution by Turfdry’s skilled team. The work was completed with ‘Big Roll’ turfing just in time for the opening of the gardens, with Turfdry packing up just as the eager public were ushered into the garden. Subsequent visits have revealed that the turf has taken very well – despite its heavy usage – and that the Garden’s summer events schedule is in full swing.

W E T L A N D S C O N S T R U C T I O N E D M O N T O N , L O N D O N Following a series of successful works for Enfield Council – including drainage at Whitewebbs Golf Club, Enfield Golf Club, and the creation of a watercourse and construction of a flood barrier at Firs Farm Park – Turfdry was recently contracted to construct wetlands scheme at Pymmes Park, Edmonton, designed primarily to improve the water quality of the lake in the park.

The Council’s Senior Engineer designed the scheme, though Turfdry was able to contribute to design changes as the project progressed, which included the re-levelling of a badly undulating football pitch in the park, using material excavated from the wetlands cells. Despite complications posed by the uncovering of a large WWII-era bomb shelter – which saw Turfdry work in conjunction with a team of archaeologists to ensure the discovery became part of historical record – the works ran very smoothly. With all excavation and re-levelling works completed, planting has already taken place in the wetlands, which should flourish over the next 12 months, adding aesthetic value to the park, and providing a rich habitat for plants and animals.

east ridinG of yorKshire CounCil maKes biG operational saVinGs With all-neW toro fleet East Riding of Yorkshire Council has invested in Toro for the first time as a full mowers replacement programme gets underway. In a substantial £470,000 deal with Toro distributor Lely UK and Toro dealer the Russell Group, the local authority has taken delivery of 18 new Toro machines; 12 Toro LT3340s, a heavy-duty triple cylinder mower, and six Toro Groundsmaster 3400 high performance rotary mowers. The delivery marks the start of a four-year supply agreement, during which the Council will take on an additional 12 machines, making 30 in total. Andy Height, service manager for waste, streets and grounds at the Council, explains why the grounds team decided to replace their fleet with 100 percent Toro machines. “We recently underwent a comprehensive review of grass cutting across the entire authority. Every two weeks, the grounds team cuts the equivalent of 919 professional football pitches. At 6.9 million square metres of grass, that is one of the largest areas of land tended to by any council in the UK,” he says. In search of a better quality machine, the Council went out to tender and tested out a number of mowers. The evaluation process saw eight staff members – five charge hands and three grounds operatives – get involved in

106 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 14

trialling the various machines. “We went through a rigorous procurement exercise before purchasing Toro mowers. We have 124 grounds staff, with 54 of those being seasonal here at the Council, and it was very important to have a selection of those involved in choosing which new machines to take on board. They’re the ones out there using them every day, so it’s vital they’re happy with the choice,” Andy explains. Prior to this deal, Andy says that the Council had a couple of Toro machines out on hire throughout the summer last year, and received excellent feedback from staff using them. Along with high quality and positive staff feedback, Andy adds that financial savings were equally important in the decision-making process. With local authorities facing increasing pressure to save money and increase efficiency, investment in good machinery is imperative for future plans.

reliability and after sales care is great and another key reason for choosing them,” he explains. For councils such as East Riding, the GM3400 and LT3340 are the ideal workhorses needed to maintain the quality of green spaces in the most productive, cost effective way. Engineered to provide an outstanding, longterm and reliable solution to out-front mowing, the GM3400 is a practical and sustainable investment, while the high quality design and robust heavy duty construction of the LT3340 means it’s able to meet the most demanding of environments. From light trimming to mowing dense, overgrown areas, the LT3340 can be tailored to suit any mowing application. The 18 Toro mowers have already been put to work on East Yorkshire’s vast urban and rural grassy areas – something that’s not gone unnoticed by the public, says Andy.

“Since using Toro, the information we’ve received from the fleet shows average fuel savings of 12-15 percent, which is fantastic. On top of that, we’re also expecting to experience big savings on the maintenance and repairs side.

“If the grass isn’t cut to a good standard, people notice, and we’ve already had compliments from the public since using the Toros. Combined with fuel savings and great feedback from staff, in all, we’re very happy with our new fleet,” he adds.

“With this type of work, it’s vital that breakages are kept to a minimum and that we can get things repaired quickly. Toro’s reputation for

PerenniAl lAunches go green for hortAiD AnD Announces bumPer funDrAising yeAr so fAr

Perennial’s annual fundraising appeal HortAid, has already raised over £50,000 in 2015! This includes over £13,500 from challenge events thanks to The Grubby Gardeners mud run and skydive, then Nigel Bowcocks’ two marathons in two weeks event. As the summer season of flower shows and garden events really gets into full swing, Perennial is now calling on colleagues from across the industry to start planning for Go Green fortnight which runs from 1 – 14 September. Anita Bates, Director of Marketing and Development, said; “Our Go Green theme really struck a chord last year and so we’re hoping people from across the industry will be inspired to fundraise for us this September. I think Tony Arnold really set the tone in 2014 with his green lipstick, stockings and nail polish and we can’t wait to hear about how horticulturists plan to top that this year! “Perennial simply couldn’t provide the range of services we offer to those working in and retired from horticulture without the help of people across the industry. Our Go Green for HortAid campaign is a crucial part of our annual income and we’re calling on everyone to green up and dig deep this year. Let’s make it one to remember!” Highlights from the 2014 inaugural Go Green for HortAid campaign, which raised just over £10,500 in total, included: t t

A Kickathon challenge at SALTEX 2014, sponsored by CWC, raised £2,460. Sarah Walsh, whose partner was helped by Perennial, walked the Saints Way in Cornwall with two friends raising over £1,450. Tony Arnold, Chair of the APL and Head Gardener at Newnham College, Cambridge, was sponsored to wear green lipstick, nail varnish and stockings for the day, raising over £1,500.

The garden team from Hever Castle dressed up as gnomes for the day, with a bucket appeal for visitors.

In addition to the usual running, walking, cycling, dressing up and getting muddy events, there are plans afoot for a Go Green Botanical Bake-off. Initiated by Rocky Coles, owner of Well Planted Gardens in Northamptonshire and former Young Horticulturist of the Year, the Botanical Bake-off will take place during Go Green for HortAid. Rocky is looking for a venue and participants to bake competition cakes packed with botanical ingredients. Contact rocky@wellplantedgardens.com. Anything goes in Go Green fortnight but if you would prefer to join an organized event rather than hold your own, Perennial has some cracking challenge events lined up with places still available. 5 September: Summer Nuts Challenge Set at Swires Farm in Dorking, the legendary Nuts Challenge course has more than 100 obstacles over a 7km course. Registration Fee: £44.99 | Pledge to raise £100 in sponsorship 6 September: London to Brighton cycle ride Tackle one of the UK’s most famous cycle routes and raise money along the way! Starting on Clapham Common, riders take in Mitcham, Carshalton, Chipstead, Banstead, Haywards Heath and finally arrive in Brighton having completed 54 miles! Registration fee: £40 | Minimum sponsorship: £100 Anytime: Skydiving Intrepid Perennial thrill-seekers leapt out of an aeroplane on 2 May 2015 to raise over £4,200 for Perennial! Other dates are available – just email the HortAid team or details.

Charlotte Wain, Perennial fundraiser and wife of Andrew Wain, one of the incredible Grubby Gardeners fundraising team, took part in a sponsored skydive for Perennial in April. She says: “I see first-hand why Perennial and the work they do is so important to so many people. We live in an incredible setting because of Andy and the job he has worked so hard to secure. But the support Perennial gives to others may one day be invaluable to us. It is not just down to horticulturists to support this fabulous charity, but I feel it is down to me too, as the wife of one, to make an effort to support them too.” And Thomas Bannister is a young horticulturist who took part in the Dirty Dozen for Perennial earlier this year. He says, “We all finished together. A team… - A cold, wet, aching muddy team, but we did it! We smashed the Dirty Dozen. We sent it packing! It felt great to achieve the 12km and it felt great to be there on behalf of the amazing Perennial charity. What a top group of guys and girls the Grubbies were! Bring on the next challenge. Dirty 24km anyone??” There are plenty of ways to get involved with HortAid 2015, whether you are an individual who loves gardens or a horticulture business keen to raise funds to help colleagues around the industry. Go Green for HortAid 2015 and help change the life of someone in crisis. Visit www.hortaid.org.uk to download a fundraising pack for ideas and information or call the team on 0800 093 8510. Perennial’s wide-ranging benevolent services are regularly described by clients simply as a ‘lifeline’ – over 85% of clients say that Perennial’s help had a ‘huge’ or ‘quite big’ effect on their lives – but without the financial support of the UK horticulture industry, their long-term continuation is threatened.

A Harbor in the Tempest. David Harber and Stockscape collaborate to raise money for the victims of the Nepal earthquake disaster. Stockscape very kindly agreed to donate to a silent auction the beautifully engraved stepping stones created for David Harber's 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show stand. Each stone was etched with some inspiring lines from the poem ‘Look Well To This Day’ by the fifth century Sanskrit poet Kalidasa. The stones were given to the highest bidder for use in their own garden and all the money raised from the auction was donated to the British School Katmandu, a charity who are directing their efforts to help school rebuilding projects in Nepal. www.jumblebee.co.uk/davidharbernepal www.davidharber.co.uk
