Building with Nature National Award 2023
30TH LANDSCAPE INSTITUTE AWARDS
CELEBRATES IMPACT OF LANDSCAPE PROFESSIONS ON PEOPLE, PLACE AND NATURE, AS BRADFORD METROPOLITAN DISTRICT COUNCIL CLAIMS PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR PUBLIC HEALTH SCHEME
The LI Awards, held this year on 3rd November, is an annual celebration of people, place and nature, and the myriad ways that landscape projects can connect them. Hosted by BBC Climate Editor, Justin Rowlatt, it was the Awards’ 30th anniversary, a tribute to the longevity of their impact and success. Taking home the prestigious President’s Award, presented by President-Elect of the Landscape Institute, Carolin Göhler, was ‘Challenging Public Health

Inequalities Across Bradford District’, a wide-ranging scheme by Bradford Metropolitan District Council. The project, which also won the ‘Excellence in Public Health and Wellbeing’ category, tackles public health disparities by integrating green and blue infrastructure, highlighting the vital role of the environment in health outcomes. Rooted in participatory and cocreation principals and extensive research, its focus is on the social
value of better public health and wellbeing within urban areas. With a scope extending from policy and planning to design, implementation and beyond, it is an example of what a landscape-led approach can offer in the public sector. ‘Mayfield Park, Manchester’, a project by Studio Egret West, won two Awards, for ‘Excellence in Landscape Design’ and ‘Excellence in Place Regeneration’, after also being shortlisted for ‘Excellence in Climate, Environment and

GARDEN DESIGN Social Outcomes’ and ‘Excellence in Biodiversity Conservation and Enhancement’. Meanwhile, both PRP and The Paul Hogarth Company won two awards each. PRP won the ‘Building with Nature National Award’, for its scheme Pydar, and ‘Excellence in Collaboration, Engagement and Influence’ for Dementia Friendly Design. The Paul Hogarth Company won ‘Excellence in Masterplanning and Urban Design’ with Letterkenny 2040 and ‘Excellence in Small Landscape and Garden Design’ for Glenkinchie Distillery. Entries across the board point towards a future in which landscape practice plays an essential role in helping the built and natural
environment sectors deliver on their goals around climate, biodiversity, and health. Every successful project at the LI Awards demonstrated how the profession provides the skills and knowledge to create resilient, environmentally friendly, socially inclusive and beautiful spaces, that contribute to the well-being of both people and the planet.

Carolin Göhler, President-Elect, Landscape Institute, said: “I have been a judge at the LI Awards before, but this was my first time as President-Elect, and I was delighted to award the President’s Award to such an innovative, entrepreneurial, and deserving winner in the public sector. It is a true exemplar of how landscape can benefit people, place and nature with good community health research, policy making, design, and implementation, with close community liaisons and management of green spaces. I want to thank all the entrants that took part, as well as the judging panels and the many volunteers, and congratulate all the winners - the future of landscape is bright.” Robert Hughes, Acting CEO, Landscape
Institute, said: “We at the LI are so pleased to see such a continued high standard Excellence in Place Regeneration of entries. The projects highlighted a wide range of our members’ work, as well as the wider industry’s diverse skills and attributes, with many of the projects reflecting the urgent need to combat social inequality, climate change and the biodiversity emergency with progressive and nature and place-based solutions. Our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors, volunteers, and supporters for making this important celebration happen.”

David Withycombe, Chair of the LI Awards Panel, said: “‘This year we have seen an exemplary standard of entries. As always it was hard for the judges to narrow all the entries down to a select group of finalists, as the standard was so high. This year we saw the continued themes of combating climate and biodiversity crisis with new and innovative solutions. It was interesting to look back on the last 30 years and see how the profession has changed, as well as looking forward to the beginning of an exciting new chapter.’

GARDEN DESIGN
SUSTAINABILITY, BIODIVERSITY AND ARTIFICIAL GRASS Sam Baylis, surveyor and sales professional for Artificial Lawn Company There is something about artificial lawns that inspires strong and negatively biased opinions. Apocalyptic images of large swathes of land being covered in plastic, melting in the heat, and choking the local wildlife, give a false impression of what is actually a highly versatile and durable product. Despite its reputation, artificial grass is a viable alternative ground-covering option for outside spaces or on private or commercial landscaping projects.
12 www.landud.co.uk
Helped or hindered (we haven’t decided yet) by the influencer Mrs Hinch and nightly images of the fake grassed Love Island and Big Brother gardens filling our screens, artificial grass has probably garnered more interest than it probably deserves. Last spring, Welsh climate change minister, Julie James proposed banning the use of artificial lawns completely in public places in Wales (except sports facilities, I understand). The minister is likening it to single-use plastics and is using this argument as a premise for an outright ban, despite the fact that it Follow us @ludmagazine
GARDEN DESIGN does not meet any of the definitions of single-use plastic. (This proposal has since been withdrawn). In mainstream media, barely a week goes by without someone launching another tirade or campaign against artificial grass. Believe it or not, I welcome all these endeavours with open arms. They give us the perfect opportunity to attempt to set the record straight and make a more balanced case for using this product.
Quality over quantity I don’t believe any self-respecting builder wants to see the country blanketed in plastic. Even the team at Artificial Lawn Company actively works against its excessive use. People have been saying the same thing about concrete for years yet there is no talk about banning concrete. There is no either-or choice with artificial grass. Rather, we see it as an alternative ground covering material that can be incorporated into an overall landscape design in the same way as paving, gravel, or any other aggregate. It’s fully porous, and in most cases can be much better than concreting or paving an entire garden.
The colour, texture, durability, and longevity of artificial grass are all features that make it as good a material as any. And if you take into account its low maintenance qualities. It is ideal when creating homes for older people, those with disabilities, on social housing projects and helping most families with pets or children who will otherwise struggle to maintain and grow a real lawn. Biodiversity does not have to be compromised. Clever landscaping can incorporate native plants, bug hotels, feeders and other installations that attract insect life to revive and rebalance whatever may have been previously lost. Quality is key - when cheaper, low-grade fake grass is used, issues around poor performance and longterm sustainability start to be raised. Chances are the cheaper fake grass is simply hiding a whole heap of other issues under the surface. However, a premium artificial lawn product can still have that immediate aesthetic finish and will continue to have it for many years to come with minimum maintenance required. We have customers and lawns that are still going strong after 20 years.
Working towards greater sustainability While the artificial lawn industry is investing in improving the recycling infrastructure for the product, we make sure that our own lawns are as durable and hard-wearing as possible to get the maximum use out of them, with a lifespan of up to 20 years and more. Artificial Lawn Company has recently launched its own fully recyclable product. And in 2024 we will be working with “Lets Recycle Artificial Grass” to recycle all our latex backed products at its east midlands centre. This would include offcuts and roll ends, trimmings from our own installation and any old lawns that we lift up and remove. What those with responsibility for public and private landscape products need to be aware of are cheaper fake grass products. They don’t fulfil the same function as a premium lawn, become quickly worn out, and ultimately end up in a landfill. Too often, fake grass can be seen as a quick fix to make a garden project look instantaneously good - unfortunately, that ‘Instagram’ immediacy never lasts with a poorquality product or installation. Fake grass is not a quick fix or a replacement for natural grass. Artificial lawn is a viable alternative where growing natural grass is not possible and an alternative to concreting or paving for an ultimate low maintenance solution. There is a difference. As a professional, it’s always disappointing to see fake grass laid out as a cover-up, either with a cheap product or poor installation - it immediately makes me wonder what might be underneath, and I know immediately the raft of problems those with responsibility for maintenance will be dealing with in time. I would not want to compromise the longevity of any installation with a quick fix. As part of an overall landscaping project, premium artificial grass can be specified with biodiversity, sustainability and practicality in mind.

A PERFECT ADDITION TO YOUR GARDEN
When designing a garden with room for both gardening and relaxation, one should consider the advantages of having a greenhouse. A greenhouse can provide you with a place where you can watch the seasons change. In the early months of spring, the temperature rises quickly as the sun hits the greenhouse making it the perfect room for you to soak up the first rays of spring. The summer evenings in the greenhouse are perfect for dining with friends and family, and in the Autumn, you can sit, and be protected from wind and weather, and watch the colours change. The Juliana Grand Oase series features three different sizes of greenhouses that each offer plenty of room for all your greenhouse dreams, especially if you’re dreaming of growing exotic plants and relaxing with a good book.

USING CONCRETE IN THE HOME Founded in 2009 and based in Yorkshire, Verus Construction, the modern residential specialist has recently completed a luxury home project on Sandmoor Avenue, Leeds. Through the use of polished concrete flooring throughout the ground floor, the specialist team has created a distinctive home that celebrates open plan living, brutalism and minimalist luxury. Damian Barker, Founder and CEO of Verus Construction, says of the completed project: “In the last decade there’s been a real shift in interest toward buildings using concrete as part of attentiongrabbing home interiors. We’ve
18 www.landud.co.uk
seen exposed concrete ceilings and particularly polished concrete flooring spike in popularity, giving the feeling of a simple and honest shell and creating clean and calming spaces. Brutalism as an interior style often makes use of concrete surfaces, creating hard angles whilst still managing to feel both warm and welcoming as interior flooring and walls merge and flow into the outdoor landscape.”
Cohesive concrete spaces A polished concrete floor has been used throughout the ground floor of Sandmoor Avenue. Hard-wearing, easy to clean and dust resistant, this industrial look is on trend and
works brilliantly with the underfloor heating installed throughout. The cool modern concrete style has been mimicked through the use of polished plaster on the fireplace surround to continue the clean lines and connectivity throughout the home. The fireplace blends seamlessly into the surrounding walls and acts as a focal point in the ground floor, connecting the hallway, kitchen diner and living room together to create a calm and connected living space. The cohesion and simplicity throughout the home creates a quiet luxury, elevating the interiors whilst maintaining tranquillity and balance.

TREE RELOCATION:
PRESERVING NATURE’S BEAUTY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Since 1963, Civic Trees have been at the forefront of tree relocation throughout the UK, from importing the very first Vermeer tree spade into Europe, to designing and constructing the Newman Frame which is now used worldwide. Civic Trees are always looking to pioneer new techniques that aid the relocation of trees. Tree relocation is a concept that involves uprooting trees from one location and transplanting them to another. With current events surrounding environmental issues, relocating trees is even more important now than ever before. By relocating trees instead of cutting them down, we can preserve nature’s beauty while also promoting sustainability. We are proud of our reputation for efficient, cost effective and reliable tree relocation throughout the UK. You can be confident that through our exemplary commitment to staff

training and development, our work meets the highest technical and safety standards. We believe that a tree is only as good as the way it is handled, planted and maintained. Ground preparation and aftercare are crucial to the successful establishment of the tree. Before we start the tree move process we arrange a site visit with our client and assess the tree’s health, size, and root system. We also create a site specific risk assessment to ensure the whole operation is carried out safely. Our team of experts use specialised equipment to excavate the tree with minimal damage to its root structure. The tree is then carefully transported to its new location,
Our experienced team will know and understand the benefits and methods of loading and unloading a tree using the correct lifting techniques in order not to stress the tree or root ball. This is imperative for the longevity of the tree’s life. In conclusion, tree relocation is an environmentally friendly method that allows us to preserve nature’s beauty while supporting urban growth. By carefully uprooting and relocating trees, we can maintain the valuable benefits they provide to our communities. Civic Trees prides itself in paying great attention to the health and well being of our clients most prized asset “THE TREE”.

LIGHTING
LIGHTEMOTION ILLUMINATES VIGER SQUARE All the World’s a stage: Lightemotion’s personification of inanimate objects infuses life into an urban public square Lightemotion, a global lighting design consultancy creating pathways to enhanced human experiences, proudly presents its enlightenment of Square Viger, a neglected public space bridging Montreal’s contemporary downtown core with the preserved history of Old Montreal. Forming part of an 8-year contemporary overhaul to restore the space as a green and accessible public square, the project
28 www.landud.co.uk
anchors around the preservation of an existing historic monument, and the revival of pergolas originally designed by Quebec artist Charles Daudelin. “In the 1950s and 60s, Square Viger was an iconic space in the style of a New York City park,” explains François Roupinian, President and Design Director of Lightemotion. “But then a highway through the downtown core was constructed underneath it, and it was restored in more of a Brutalist style in the 1970s.”
Heeding the call In addition to restoring elements of Square Viger’s past, the project envisioned the infusion of fresh new life to carry the public space beyond the present and into the future. On a macro level, that vision unfolded through the addition of abundant perennial plants able to withstand the challenging elements of Montreal’s four-seasons, as well as through the addition of more than 50 new trees. In approaching the task at hand, the project’s landscape architect, NIPPAYSAGE, brought Lightemotion in from the very beginning to bring it all to life. Follow us @ludmagazine
LIGHTING In the shadow of a recently built hospital complex, Lightemotion wanted to approach the project from an angle 180-degrees removed from what a traditional park experience calls for. In assessing the contents of the newlydesigned Square, the firm devised a masterplan to create a sensory experience for its future users. “The user experience is at the heart of everything we do, and we take great pride in thinking outside of the box and its perceived perimeters,” says Roupinian. “We are a multifaceted design firm, and our core focus is on the delivery of sensory experiences.” In addition to the preserved historic monument paying tribute to Jean-Olivier Chénier, and the concrete arches of Daudelin’s work, Lightemotion had two beautiful
Follow us @ludmagazine
new fountains to work. In assessing all of its various elements, they formed a view of Square Viger as a metaphorical stage of stages, with tiers of actors including the art, the monument, the fountains, and the surrounding landscape of trees and vegetation. Determined to steer clear of a solution comprising a flat field of light, the firm embarked on the design of a moody environment to bring Square Viger’s actors to life.
A vibrant scenography The illumination of Lightemotion’s stage began with a focus on Daudelin’s art, creating individual lighting for each concrete slab. In the context of art gallery lighting, the firm infused it with movement to create a sense of strolling through a meandering canyon. At night, the resulting lighting scheme brings it all to life, injecting breath into otherwise inanimate objects.
“Daudelin’s installations are the breathing lungs of the Square, defined by the fading in and slowly fading out of light,” describes Roupinian. “If you take the time to sit and enjoy the space for 30 minutes, the lighting evolves significantly over that period of time.”
Reflections of life While Square Viger’s two new fountains were illuminated by the builders, Lightemotion added a euphoric blue light presentation that metaphorically represents the water they contain. “When the fountains are inactive, the waters calm to a mirror-like surface,” says Roupinian. “The blue light adds a very delicate background to that mirrored surface and actually captures and frames reflections of Daudelin’s work.”

LIGHTING
“We believe that a beautiful lighting scheme should comprise an abundance of small light sources that create different layers of light that change as you move through a space,” explains Roupinian. “With Square Viger, we infused what is sometimes referred to in architecture as the ‘millefeuilles effect’, where we endeavored to create something sensual through lighting layers that provide a gentle caress to the leaves and shadows.”
Backstage technology
In continuing the focus on bringing all of its actors to life, Lightemotion set the stage for the illumination of Square Viger’s vegetation. With greenery spread across their stage, the firm created a series of highlights and projected shadows that vary through a four-season lifecycle. As a result, the actors evolve with animation and beauty throughout the year, from the full blooms of summer, to the bare branches of winter. Lightemotion’s
30 www.landud.co.uk
design of dynamic uplighting at the base of the trees subtly changes in intensity throughout the evening, creating shadows that move in and out of the living, breathing space. Next, they brought the legacy of Jean-Olivier Chénier to life with bright and powerful sidelight illumination, providing the actor with a prominent presence worthy of his stature.
Every lighting element of Square Viger is like a paint brush with a variety of hues, brought to life with time loops synchronized to evolve throughout the night under the control of dimmers on a DMX system. Subtle changes occur throughout the evening, as if breathing, intensifying, and then softening. “A key aspect of designing dynamic lighting schemes is to clearly understand the subjects and their materiality,” says Roupinian. “Technically, when you light up elements like this, a tree, a circulation path, and a work of art each require different colour temperatures and intensities.” Follow us @ludmagazine
LIGHTING Among the innovative technical elements powering Lightemotion’s lighting schemes, tall-standing needle poles project very precise beams of light through small apertures of varying degrees. The tighter beams create accents on each of the targeted elements, emitting light sources that create minimum glare and disturbance to ensure that what is projected and absorbed is the emotion of the light, and not the apparatus. That theme of concealed apparatus extends to the Daudelin pieces, with a wall wash of light generated
by small fixtures concealed in their concrete grooves. Delicate uplighting illuminates the trees from embedded positions in the ground that are not overly present, but which provide each of the actors with presence and dynamism. The same concept applies to the Square’s vegetation pods, with their smooth rock borders designed to provide users with inviting seating opportunities. In addition to modulating light designed to set a comforting mood, Lightemotion’s scheme also creates enhanced wayfinding within the public realm.
A beacon of rejuvenation With the collective lighting of Square Viger also providing surrounding buildings with a soothing aerial presentation, Lightemotion has succeeded in creating a beautiful visual signature in an area that has long been devoid of such elements. From the ground level, the firm’s innovative schemes entice and welcome visitors with their plays of light and shadows, viewed by users through a variety of perspectives from the Square’s different entry angles. Square Viger is now a prominent new presence in Montreal’s night sky, infusing life and love into a peaceful public space where people can gather and reflect within a timeless design that will be relevant for many years to come. “People tend to think of lighting as a very technical thing, but what drives the bus for Lightemotion is how our lighting schemes make people feel within the spaces we illuminate for them,” concludes François Roupinian. “We are honored that NIPPAYSAGE entrusted us to deliver something outstanding for the client, and for the future users of Square Viger, and we hope that our dynamic presentation will leave its mark on the City of Montreal.”

STOCKHOLM’S QUEST TO PROTECT BIODIVERSITY
WITH COLOUR AND PRESENCE-CONTROLLED LIGHTING The City of Stockholm in Sweden has embarked on a groundbreaking project to assess and better control the impact of lighting on local biodiversity with a lighting project involving colour and presencecontrolled lighting.
in the City of Stockholm.” This initiative has given rise to a series of actions aimed at preserving and enhancing biodiversity within the urban environment.
Lighting as a Conservation Tool
The Swedish capital aims to become fossil-free and climate-positive by 2040, with the city itself becoming fossil-free by 2030. Key to this vision is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also nurturing a healthy environment for its residents and wildlife.
One innovative aspect of this broader initiative is a focus on lighting as a potential conservation tool. This project is a collaboration between various departments at the City of Stockholm and has been driven by Mattias Bovin of the Environmental Administration and Anders Hedlund of the Traffic Office.
To bring these ambitious goals to fruition, Stockholm has crafted an “Action Plan for Biological Diversity
Commencing early in 2022, the project is set to conclude with a final report in mid-2024. The overarching
Environmental Context
34 www.landud.co.uk
goal is to establish guidelines for lighting practices that harmonize with and support biodiversity.
The Genesis of the Project In 2022, Stockholm launched a pilot project grounded in international research and reports. The project’s central objective was to assess how colour and presence-controlled lighting could affect the activity of bats within the “Årstskogen” nature area, strategically situated in the heart of the city. The collaboration with the Environmental Administration ensures that ecological considerations remained at the forefront of the project’s design and implementation.
Follow us @ludmagazine
LIGHTING Technical Innovations To comprehensively evaluate the impact of lighting on the local bat population, two distinct technical solutions were developed and tested: Option 1: This approach involved equipping luminaires with two different colour temperatures, 3000K (warm) and 2200K (very warm). Both light sources were activated at dusk (approximately 1000 + 1000 lumens), with the 3000K source turning off five hours before and after midnight. The 2200K light, emitting less blue light, aimed to explore whether a simpler and cost-effective lighting solution could still provide adequate illumination while being more favourable to bats. Option 2: In this configuration, luminaires featured monochrome amber LED lights at 590nm (approximately 500 lumens) and 3000K (around 2000 lumens). The amber LED remained active throughout the night, while the 3000K component was controlled by presence sensors and illuminated a section of 150-200 meters before and after the detection location. The amber LED’s minimal biological impact made it ideal as a guiding light, while the 3000K source was essential for safety and enhancing the sense of security.
On-the-Ground Measurements Two distinct park roads, “the brook” and “the forest,” were selected for measurement and observation. Pre-measurements of bat activities were conducted in the summer of
2022. “The brook” had previously been illuminated with round radiant luminaires using ceramic metal halide at 3000K and bats had been observed in this location in the past. In contrast, “the forest” had remained unlit, but accessibility and safety concerns had prompted calls for illumination. The bat activity measurements for both sites were again conducted in the summer of 2023, providing crucial data for evaluating the impact of the new lighting solutions. Audio boxes have been installed to record the sounds made by bats. Once the data and sounds have been evaluated, the city will be able to better understand the different bat types, quantities and activity in this area.
Looking Ahead “The brook” has undergone a transformation with lighting according to Option 2, while “the forest” now utilizes the lighting solution from Option 1. These test results will offer insights into the effectiveness of these different lighting configurations and their ecological implications. Moreover, this experiment could inform future lighting decisions across the city.
Committed to Sustainability It’s important to note that these lighting solutions are based on reports and studies, rather than established scientific consensus. The project remains open to new information that may refine its guidelines. All adjustments for biological diversity are founded on thorough site investigations by ecologists, who provide guidance on species and their lighting sensitivity. The project is also exploring how residents utilize the routes in terms of their experiences and feelings of safety.
A Rich Tapestry of Life With 56 unique animal species identified in the area, including 18 near-threatened, 5 vulnerable, and 3 endangered, Stockholm’s commitment to preserving biodiversity is evident. This project takes on added significance as the city is currently home to eleven species of bats, constituting 79% of the bat species observed in the county and 61% of those observed in Follow us @ludmagazine
the country since 2000. Prominent among them are the northern bat, the pygmy pipistrelle, and the water bat.
A Brighter Future for Biodiversity It is anticipated that the findings should be reported in the middle of 2024 once the evaluation of field observations and data is complete. In the meantime, data collection is continuing. Stockholm’s forward-thinking project is a beacon of hope for environmental conservation, hoping to demonstrate that even urban lighting can play a vital role in supporting biodiversity. With innovative approaches and a commitment to sustainability, the city is taking strides toward its vision of a fossil-free, climatepositive future while safeguarding its natural treasures. Parts of the project have been enabled by a new luminaire called ”Citisun Dual Colour” by OrangeTek. This dual colour luminaire, one of the first of its kind, has the ability to change the colour temperature balance using smart street lighting controls and sensors. It serves as a promising example of the future of lighting, designed to minimize environmental impact and prioritize the well-being of both wildlife and the community. By shedding light on the delicate balance between human needs and the needs of nature, Stockholm is pioneering a more harmonious coexistence between city life and the wild world beyond.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT FIXINGS FOR YOUR EXTERNAL DECKING PROJECT Corrosion is the biggest threat to the performance of outdoor metal fixings – its consequences range from unsightly stains on the surface of wood to the loss of load bearing capability and premature failure. As the deterioration of a deck fixing is often unseen, failures can occur without any warning causing the safety of the structure to be compromised.
Recommended fixings for timber deck boards* Screws provide a number of advantages over nails – they are unlikely to lift if movement occurs; are more easily removed to allow access; are less likely to be damaged during installation and hammer dents on boards are avoided.
Sourcing for your next decking project?
Look for the Mark
Find third-party verified and fit-for-purpose products and installers From deck components and design engineers to wood coating solutions and specialised fixings.
Specialised decking screws are available which include features such as: self-drilling threads and self-countersinking heads. All fixings should be between 2-3 times the length of the board thickness (unless the fixing manufacturer can substantiate any different). On hardwoods or dense species softwoods, the use of screws is always recommended – predrill pilot holes with 2mm oversized clearance and countersink slightly below the surface. To retain the aesthetic of the surface there are several ‘secret fixing’ systems on the market. Fixings can be inserted diagonally into the sides of the board with specialised tools (if board depth is sufficient) or clip systems offer alternative concealment methods. *Specialist fixings are used with wpc products - usually available from the deck product supplier. These include ‘secret’ fastener clips and colour matched trim fixings. Always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. For more advice, visit www.tdca.org.uk or call 01977 558147.

ALL DECKED OUT
Home improvements and even DIY for those who are capable, have never been simpler than with EvaLast’s range of bamboo composite building materials. Get all decked out with some tips to help you make light work of your next makeover project:
1. Choose composite Aside from saving our precious trees, there’s a reason the pros are choosing composites over natural materials – they are engineered to outperform traditional timber when it comes to installation, maintenance and upkeep. No more sanding, varnishing, painting or pesticides! Composites are fast becoming the go-to material for the green building industry, offering affordable alternatives to traditional raw materials that are more effective and longer lasting. Natural fibres such as bamboo, coconut, coir or jute have been used as a reinforcing material in building for centuries. Their natural density, elasticity and strength is enhanced by combining them with recycled plastic polymers such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene (PE). Eva-Last use bamboo fibres together with recycled plastic polymer compounds to produce advanced sustainable building products that require little-to-no maintenance and

are not subject to degradation when exposed to the elements. These hybrid materials are ideal for decks, walkways, and stairways. Not only do Eva-Last composites look the part, they also provide superior performance characteristics including slip, scratch, stain, fade and moisture resistance. The inherent tensile strength and flexibility of the bamboo fibres ensures dimensional stability while the extruded polymer enhances the biological resistance to pests and susceptibility to UV damage. Finally, the extrusion process allows for protective capping in realistic tones and textures that maintain their colour fastness over the lengthy lifetime of the product.
Be sure that any sub-structure is level and secure and consult a professional for expert advice if required, especially around load serviceability.
3. Composite materials and systems make DIY simple Eva-Last’s comprehensive collection of deck profiles, fascia boards, and composite fasteners work together to complete any project with minimum fuss and maximum convenience. GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE
NORTH YORKSHIRE’S FIRST TREEPARKER® URBAN TREE PLANTING SYSTEM INSTALLATION DECLARED A SUCCESS Background: Part of the Harrogate conservation area, Craven Lodge on Victoria Avenue is an imposing double-fronted dwelling and was the first Victorian villa to be built on the site. After many years of disuse, a full renovation is taking place to change the building from its recent office use, into a mix of offices and luxury apartments.
46 www.landud.co.uk
To increase the green credentials, and to add a further degree of privacy to the frontage, a 22-metre trench was planned to provide adequate shared rooting volume for four, 3-metre-high Hornbeam ‘Frans Fontaine’ trees. These stunning trees retain their columnar shape into maturity and are an excellent choice to provide a classic architectural
shape and beautiful colour, especially in Autumn. The new trees were positioned to break up and sit between parking spots at the front of the building. A solution was required that would enable the cars to be parked, without their weight compacting the soil in the tree pits. Follow us @ludmagazine
GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE Green-tech involvement: Callum Bain-Mackay, lead designer from Grant Horticulture approached Green-tech for the best way to get the optimal rooting volume for the tree pits, within the tight space constraints of the property. The original thought was to use Green-tech’s sandwich-construction TreeRaft®, but the lack of space made this impractical. The new TreeParker® Urban Tree Pit System was therefore suggested as this would involve less digging out laterally of the existing ground. The initial landscape plan was for separate tree pits for each tree, but after review, Green-tech suggested one long trench. This offered two advantages over individual tree pits. Firstly, trees are quite happy to share space, so if we can provide them with one larger pit to share, the roots can borrow space from the other trees, in effect gaining more rooting volume. Secondly, by only excavating one trench, you can save time and labour costs over four individual pits. The TreeParker® system comprises rigid, modular units made from reinforced, recycled polypropylene. These units do a vital job in enabling the ground above a tree pit to be trafficked, supporting the paving above (up to 56t/m2), whilst at the same time protecting the soil below from compaction. This means that rather than having to use a fastdraining and low organic structural
tree soil, we can use our specially blended, Green-tree Geocell topsoil, which is friable and organic - ideal for successful tree establishment. The TreeParker® units, although highly rigid, still provide 95% of their volume for rooting space. The heavy-duty, reinforced legs are available in various heights from the factory; 400, 600, 800mm, and 1, 1.2, 1.5m. This gives a previously unheard-of flexibility with depth options. It also enables the units, to easily straddle, or work around service pipes and lines. Although TreeParker® has been used extensively in high-profile projects throughout Europe Grant Horticulture is the first company in the UK to install the system which was launched by UK distributor Green-tech earlier this year. As this was the first install Green-tech was on hand to advise Callum, Grant Horticulture’s Senior Designer, and his team on the installation process, and even offered hands-on help! The team was very impressed with the speed and ease with which the units went in. Even when several unexpected service pipes were discovered running through the trench this didn’t pose a problem. The individual support legs of the units straddled the pipes, providing an easy workaround. The adjustability of the units is further enhanced by being able to be linked directly, with 50 or 75mm spacers, or even stand alone.
Green-tech supplied 40 tonnes of Geocell topsoil and Green-tree subsoil along with Mona Relief irrigation pipes and tree anchors systems. Callum Bain-Mackay comments, “We have worked with Green-tech for several years, mainly for supplies, not anything quite as big as this. They were happy to spend time explaining the system, bringing units over for us to see first-hand, providing technical drawings, and generally being supportive, with nothing being too much trouble. TreeParker® is definitely something we will use for future tree pits.” Green-tech’s Specification Advisor Alasdair Innes adds, “TreeParker® is an exciting development for the urban landscape market, and it was fantastic to have the first UK mainland job happen right on our doorstep here in Harrogate. It was a pleasure to work with a local landscape company such as Grant Horticulture, and a great bonus to be able to be involved with the installation. We’re looking forward to seeing the trees flourishing in the final refurbished property.”

UNVEILING SUSTAINABILITY:
GREENBLUE URBAN’S ROOTSPACE LCA the environmental impact, setting the stage for a holistic evaluation.
Carbon Emissions and Recycled Polypropylene: The report reveals compelling data on carbon emissions for the RS 400 and 600 single units. The Functional Unit (FU) used is 1m2 of products installed underground in tree pits over a study period of 50 years – aligning with the BBA accreditation (British Board of Agrément: Construction Product Certification). Notably, the declared unit was compared to those made with 100% virgin polypropylene.
In urban development, sustainability is the keystone to building a greener and more environmentally conscious future. GreenBlue Urban, a pioneer in urban sustainability, have gained a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for RootSpace. Following BRE certification* RootSpace will achieve an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This groundbreaking assessment, conducted by Eight Associates, focuses on the product’s material source and manufacturing, utilising 100% recycled polypropylene, this article explains how RootSpace is contributing to a more sustainable urban landscape.
The LCA Process: The LCA for RootSpace* is a comprehensive study that delves into the fundamental aspects of the manufacturing process. It encompasses the product composition, energy consumption, water consumption, and the use
48 www.landud.co.uk
of ancillary materials such as lubricating oils and hydraulic oils. The approach is based on primary data, ensuring accuracy in assessing the environmental impact. Moreover, the study considers the types and quantities of materials used for packaging, as well as the transport distances between raw material suppliers and the production site. *Product LCA aligns with obtaining EPD certification, within the BRE Product Category Rules “PN 514 Rev 3.0” for Type III EPD of construction products.
Primary Data and Allocation: One notable aspect of this assessment is the reliance on primary data, ensuring that the data used is specific and accurate to the RootSpace manufacturing process. Allocation, a crucial step in LCA, involves distributing the environmental burdens of a process between the life cycles served by that process. This approach provides a more nuanced understanding of
The use of 100% recycled polypropylene marks a significant leap in sustainability. The carbon emissions associated with the use of recycled polypropylene are impressively lower compared to its virgin counterpart. The specification of recycled polypropylene showcases a remarkable carbon saving of over 80%. This statistic underscores GreenBlue Urban’s commitment to environmental responsibility and positions RootSpace as an eco-friendly solution for urban landscapes. GreenBlue Urban’s RootSpace, backed by a thorough LCA, stands at the height of sustainability in urban development. Using 100% recycled polypropylene and the meticulous assessment of the product’s life cycle demonstrates a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and environmental impact. As our towns and cities strive for a more sustainable future, RootSpace sets the standard for responsible urban development, proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.

One particular improvement across the entire Tubex Nature range has been to double the amount of force the tube can withstand when tightening the zip tie during installation. “This was an issue commonly cited by our customers. Indeed, it seems to be true generally that bio-based biodegradable materials are weaker in this regard. By dramatically strengthening this area, we’re delivering an installation performance that is close to that experienced when using traditional tubes,” explained James Taylor. The meadow starts with lower flowering plants like Fairy Toadflax, followed by taller plants like Cornflower, followed by even taller plants like Poppies. The meadow is designed so each successionally taller plant hides the dead heads of the previous flowers. The result an ever changing and always fresh display of stunning flowers.

The flower meadows created by Pictorial Meadows are truly adaptive, engaging and resilient. None more so than their original “Classic” flower
It was intentionally designed to deliver the highest visual impact for minimum effort, achieved through
An additional benefit of this successional flowering design is an extended flowering period during the growing season. Whilst the first flowers start appearing in as little as six weeks after sowing in the Spring the mix will continue flowering right up to the first frost of Autumn. Throughout this time twelve different resilient species present ever changing colour waves, which is why the display you see at the end of the season is completely different to the one you see after the first few weeks.
Tried and Tested As one of Pictorial’s meadow most reliable and tried and tested mixes, the Classic mix has been used on some of the largest scale meadow projects in the UK , including the “Rotherham River of Flower’s”. At 9 miles in length it is the longest urban meadow in the UK. It is the blending of the science of horticulture and environmental management with the creativity of painting with flower that makes every Pictorial Meadow’s product unique. A MESSAGE FROM THORNTREES AMENITY LTD Our long-term strategy is to introduce new and innovative products to our range. Using our own data and market research we continually endeavour to find new and exciting products to complement our existing product range. We have recently added three new Organic-Mineral Fertilisers to our portfolio manufactured by DCM in Belgium. We are delighted that these Fertilisers are now available in the UK, exclusively from Thorntrees Amenity Ltd. From the very beginning, DCM has continuously strived to care more than the rest. In a time when chemical fertilisers were considered the only option, DCM was already committed to bring sustainability into performance fertilisers. With the introduction of MINI GRAN® fertilisers, organic and organic-mineral fertilisers became the new standards for European professionals - not only for organic production, but for conventional cultivation alike.
64 www.landud.co.uk
DCM organic fertilisers are meticulously built from more than 30 different high quality organic sources. Most of these raw materials are of plant or animal origin that are derived from residual flows from the human food industry. These ingredients are carefully integrated with high-quality mineral components to create DCM organicmineral fertilisers. Each raw material has its own nutrient release characteristics. These release characteristics can be modified additionally by a variety of proprietary pre-treatments. By properly combining the right ingredients and carefully pretreating certain ingredients, a prill can be designed to release its nutrients in a controlled and gradual manner.
Our DCM Organic-Mineral Fertilisers are distributed from our warehouse facility in Midlands giving a very efficient and fast supply line. Further additions to our DCM range are in the pipeline and once ready we shall share them with you.

Trading for over a hundred years BHGS has established an enviable reputation for supplying quality products at competitive prices to a whole range of people involved in horticulture from professional growers, local authorities, garden centres, allotment associations and keen amateur growers. As a business one of our major strengths is that we employ area sales managers together with specialists and office based staff who possess many years experience and detailed knowledge of the horticultural industry, while our fleet of delivery vehicles operating out of our three sites at Worcester, West Sussex and Cornwall enable
us to service an extensive area of the Midlands, southern England and Wales. Using outside carriers we are also able to deliver orders throughout mainland UK. In order to enable us to effectively support our extensive range of customers we employ nine specialist area sales managers, the majority of whom are BASIS qualified, who can visit sites and advise on all chemical and technical matters. In recent years we have extended our portfolio of interests to now include Irrigation and Amenity and Landscaping into the range of services we can offer our customers.
With irrigation, as well as an extensive stock supply, we can visit locations, discuss needs and design the necessary bespoke systems for the customer. Ultimately, if required, we can then install said systems. Amenity and landscaping has become another important sector for us as we work with and supply the people involved in looking after areas such as sports clubs, country estates, landscapers and National Trust properties. ROOT BARRIER:
YOUR HIDDEN LANDSCAPING ASSET 1. Root Barrier Directors: Use these when planting, tree root barrier directors guide roots away from hard surfaces, foundations, and utility trenches. 2. Liner Barriers: These are installed around areas you want to protect, even if they’re not right next to the trees e.g. lining utility trenches. 3. Ribbed Root Barriers: Urban trees benefit from these, ribbed root barriers encourage roots to grow downward, and prevent spiralling. 4. Deep-Root Barriers: When existing trees become a threat e.g. structural root damage or subsidence. A permeable barrier is a good solution here, to safeguard structures and infrastructure. Root barriers are frequently the unseen key to successful landscaping and construction projects. When used strategically, they can save money on the maintenance and repairs caused by root damage. But that’s not all. They can preserve neighbourly relations by preventing root encroachment onto neighbouring land. Homeowners are increasingly getting their hands dirty, taking on projects like installing bamboo barrier to prevent encroachment from running bamboo.
The invasive plant industry have been using root barriers for some time to block the encroachment of Japanese knotweed and bamboo into neighbouring properties. Thousands can be saved from preventing litigation where encroachment has occurred. Or, in the case of Japanese knotweed, creating burials cells with specialist knotweed root barrier membrane. Less taxed waste to landfill can mean lower project costs and a potentially better project solution.
Root Barriers at Work Beyond simply safeguarding The core purpose of root barrier is to block or offer protection from roots; however, this ability extends their use for a range of purposes. Root barriers provide an effective solution for controlling the development of tree roots around newly planted trees and for managing tree-related subsidence. Costs for the installation of root barriers are a fraction of those for underpinning as a result of subsidence. And, new developments can accommodate more trees without posing a threat to nearby buildings or structures.
68 www.landud.co.uk
Root barriers available in the market are typically designed with a specific task in mind. They can resist the relentless expansion of tree roots, shrubs, and invasive plants, but they also play a crucial role in mitigating root-related problems. Root Spiralling, structural damage, and compromising utility services can be avoided with their use. Breaking down root barrier use for trees: There are various tree root barrier types designed to address a number of different challenges.
Choosing the Right Root Barrier for Your Project Selecting the best root barrier for your project requires consideration of product features. You’ll need to decide between laying weed membrane, which provides permeability and inhibits annual weed growth, and root barriers. Weed membrane won’t resist tree, shrub, and invasive plant roots in both vertical and horizontal applications. In these instances, either a permeable or nonpermeable root barrier will need to be specified. Your specific selection will depend on the parameters of your project. The specialist options available Root barriers come in various geotextile materials, each serving distinct purposes: •
• •
Permeable Composite Root Barriers: featuring a copper layer; used for subsidence and to block knotweed Vertical Ribbed Root Barriers: to direct root growth downward. Permeable Non-Woven Polypropylene Geotextile: perfect for weed suppression. Follow us @ludmagazine

•
•
Semi-Rigid, Non-Permeable HDPE Barriers: perfect for vertical applications. Flexible, Impermeable Laminated Woven Geotextile: easily tailored root barrier.
The right choice of barrier or membrane is key to your project’s success.
The installation process Installing a root barrier does require a level of competency and plant knowledge to determine the correct root barrier depth for your specific scenario. Additionally following manufacturer guidelines, and seeking professional assistance is often essential. It is also important to know how to join or bond barriers. Specialist barrier joining tape, combined with the prayer fold’ technique, is useful for joining two barriers together. If you want to bond root barrier to a structure, you’ll need root barrier adhesive for a secure seal. When working on larger projects, heat welding root barriers can be a more efficient solution. Always plan ahead by selecting the right tools Follow us @ludmagazine
for root barrier construction and by taking the necessary protective measures before embarking on project.
Seeking Professional Help Prioritise safety and work quality. If you’re unsure about your skills, choose a professional root barrier installation company. Attempting a project beyond your expertise could end up tarnishing your reputation. Different Projects, Different Expertise: It may be necessary to upskill your team, use a specialist who has the expertise in the following: • •
• • •
•
Heat welding and root barrier (geotextile) handling. Construction expertise for largescale horizontal or deep vertical root barrier installation. The use of trenching tools and soil saws for bamboo root barrier. Mechanical excavation for deep digging. Knowledge and expertise for managing invasive species such as Japanese knotweed. Awareness of health and safety implications for deep excavation and material handling, locating

services and manual handling. Waste regulations for disposing of scheduled invasive weeds. Legal implications of working close to protected tree or trees in conservation areas.
Root barriers are essentially a landscaper’s tool. Used with plants like bamboo, they can help prevent disputes. They provide plant encroachment prevention and structural protection that safeguards against litigation and costly rectification work. Using root barrier in new planting schemes will encourage deeper rooting, whilst blocking roots from interfering with utilities and foundations. When used correctly, root barriers provide protection, but they also allow you to create a landscape infrastructure that will last.

REVOLUTIONISING SOIL MANAGEMENT Carbon Gold’s suite of products is revolutionising the landscape and horticulture industries, offering an eco-friendly and efficacious approach to soil management. The principal ingredient, biochar, is a sustainable, carbon-rich material which is produced in the UK and sequesters atmospheric carbon, positioning it as a key ally in the battle against climate change. Enhancing soil fertility and water efficiency, biochar significantly bolsters plant health, diminishing the reliance on chemical fertilisers. This proves particularly advantageous for garden designers and arboriculturists, who prioritise long-term plant health and soil vitality. Carbon Gold’s offerings are in step with the growing preference for environmentally conscious landscaping, enabling the creation of beautiful, sustainable green spaces.
Carbon Gold Soil Improver Carbon Gold’s Soil Improver excels in enhancing various soil types, from sandy to clay rich. Its biochar composition is crucial for improving soil structure, thereby augmenting aeration and moisture retention in denser soils, and
70 www.landud.co.uk
boosting nutrient retention in lighter soils. This adaptability is vital for diverse gardening and landscaping needs. The Soil Improver is enriched with natural biology, including mycorrhizal fungi and beneficial bacteria, which establish symbiotic relationships with plant roots, minimising nutrient loss and maximising plant nourishment. This leads to healthier plant growth and reduced fertiliser use.
Carbon Gold Tree Soil Improver Specifically tailored for trees, Carbon Gold’s Tree Soil Improver caters to both young saplings and mature trees. The biochar-rich mix is designed to address the distinctive requirements of trees, improving soil structure for optimal water retention and aeration – essential for root health. The addition of mycorrhizal fungi aids in nutrient absorption and reduces environmental stress. This product is especially beneficial for newly planted trees and woody plants, providing robust support, and is equally valuable for the care of older trees. Arborists and landscapers find this improver indispensable for nurturing naturally resilient, disease-resistant trees.
Carbon Gold Lawn Improver Perfect for lawns, including sports pitches and golf courses, Carbon Gold’s Lawn Improver is essential for maintaining lush, healthy grass. Its biochar-based formula optimises soil structure, enhancing moisture and nutrient availability, crucial for grass root health. This is effective in swiftly reviving patchy areas, ensuring a consistent, green appearance. Its ability to foster dense, resilient grass growth is invaluable for large turf areas, reducing the need for frequent maintenance. This lawn Improver is a boon for both domestic gardeners and professional groundskeepers, ensuring robust, aesthetically pleasing, and durable grass coverage under varied and high-traffic conditions. These products are available in sizes from 1L through to 1500L bulk bags.

RHS WISLEY CALLS ON OTTERBINE FOR SUSTAINABLE RAINWATER SOLUTION “The lake is designed in an ornamental fashion and the fountain’s visual beauty and the fact that it muffles noise disruption from a nearby road helps bring a sense of theatre and peace to the space,” says Matthew. Another benefit of the Otterbine Polaris Giant fountain is its unique launching system that eliminates the need for cranes during installation in most applications, despite its size. Miles Water Engineering was responsible for the build of the lake and the subsequent fitting of the fountain. “The whole thing was easy and efficient. We are very grateful for that,” Matthew comments.
RHS Garden Wisley has chosen Otterbine to provide its flagship garden with sustainable irrigation. Otterbine’s 25HP Polaris Giant Fountain was installed at RHS Garden Wisley in Woking as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s project to create a new rainwater capture lake, providing great quality irrigation to one of the largest plant collections in the world. In today’s climate, water can be a scarcity and harvesting rainwater supports the conservation of this vital resource. The water has to be good enough quality to use though which is where Otterbine’s 25HP Giant Polaris fountain steps in. Matthew Pottage, curator of RHS Garden Wisley, explains: “The Giant fountain is installed in our new lake which is connected to our garden irrigation system. The lake collects
76 www.landud.co.uk
winter rainwater for summer irrigation and the Otterbine aerating fountain makes the water good enough to use.” Otterbine’s fountains have the highest oxygen transfer rates in the industry and the Polaris is the brand’s largest floating fountain. The geyserlike spray of the Polaris throws water droplets into the air where they attach to oxygen molecules that can then be absorbed into the lakewater. Matthew, who oversaw the aesthetic of the new landscape and horticulture around the lake, explains there were additional reasons for choosing the Otterbine Giant Fountain: “The Wisley is one of the UK’s most visited and best-loved gardens, attracting around a million visitors each year and we wanted to use the opportunity to create a new atmosphere and beautiful place for visitors to enjoy and relax at Wisley.
Installing the new rainwater capture lake is not the only change to the grounds that RHS Wisley is undertaking. Matthew says: “We are planning a massive new landscape of grasses and perennials with Piet Oudolf, a world-renowned planting designer.”
