Kubota (UK) are delighted to announce two strategic appointments - bolstering knowledge and strength both internally and across the dealer network. John Davis has taken up the position of agricultural and groundcare dealer manager for the south and south west of England, while Matt Wilson joins the marketing team as groundcare product and key account manager for the UK and Ireland.
Passionate about farming and machinery, John has worked in the industry since leaving school, where he enrolled in an apprenticeship scheme with former dealer Tincknells, some 30 years ago. He joins Kubota following eight years with a specialist manufacturer and brings with him considerable experience gained during his most recent role working with selfpropelled crop spraying equipment.
“I’m looking forward to being challenged with continual dealer development and brand-building, to introduce Kubota to a much
wider audience in the agricultural and groundcare sectors,” said John. “Kubota is a company that is growing and we’re seeing increased interest from the industry for Kubota tractors, loaders, telehandlers and groundcare machinery. It’s a great time to be involved with such a wellrespected, global manufacturer.”
Meanwhile, Matt Wilson joins the Kubota (UK) marketing team with more than 20 years of industry knowledge having gained dealership, distribution and manufacturing experience with a variety of businesses involved in the amenity, golf and turf sectors. Matt’s desire for market and product information will be instrumental in his role to further develop the groundcare portfolio, together with working alongside Kubota’s European groundcare product management team.
Matt explains, “I have always wanted to work for a top-tier manufacturer, and joining Kubota is certainly a highlight of my career to-date. Ethically, Kubota’s core disciplines, family values and its honourable
nature are values that are close to my heart.”
“There is strong demand for Kubota’s groundcare products, in particular the products from the recent acquisition of Gianni Ferrari.” He adds, “Who wouldn’t want to work for such a well-respected brand, with equipment that sets the industry standard for build quality and reliability?!”
Commenting on the recent appointments, Kubota’s agricultural and groundcare sales manager Tim Yates said: “John’s knowledge provides us with a great opportunity to continue supporting dealers and build on the growth already achieved in the agricultural and groundcare markets. It’s great to have both him and Matt on the team; whose in-depth industry knowledge gives us a strong foundation on which to continue supporting the groundcare sector with marketleading products.”

2. Convenience and Portability
Gone are the days of being tethered to an outlet or dragged down by cumbersome extension cords. Kress Battery Electric Garden Tools offer unmatched convenience and portability, allowing you to move freely throughout the garden without any restrictions. This means they can be your new best friend in the garden. The absence of cords not only enhances manoeuvrability but also eliminates the risk of tripping hazards, making gardening a safer and more enjoyable activity.
3. Reduced Maintenance
Gas-powered garden tools need regular maintenance – oil changes, spark plug replacements, and new air filters. In contrast, Kress battery electric tools are virtually maintenance-free. With no petrol engine to worry about, you can say
goodbye to messy oil changes and complicated tune-ups. This means significant time and cost savings in the long run.
4. Quiet Operation
For many gardeners, peace and tranquillity go hand in hand with the joys of gardening. Kress battery electric tools operate quietly with just a subdued hum of electricpower.
5. Enhanced Safety Features
Safety is paramount when it comes to gardening, especially when working with power tools. As sustainability gains importance for golf courses and large turf areas, greenkeepers are increasingly looking for efficient and costeffective methods to lower their carbon footprints. Kress RTKn robotic mowers integrate advanced technology with zero emissions, offering a solution for environmentally conscious turf care.
Kress RTKn mowers provide precision and performance in turf maintenance. These machines operate quietly and without emissions, providing an alternative to traditional petrol-powered mowers. According to estimates, an 18-hole golf course could potentially reduce its carbon emissions by up to 10 tons annually by transitioning to Kress RTKn robotic mowers, contributing to environmental sustainability efforts.
Maintaining a well-kept golf course
or turf surface presents challenges, especially under time constraints and varying weather conditions. Kress RTKn mowers are designed to perform efficiently in wet weather, ensuring consistent cutting during periods of increased grass growth.

As the colder months set in and the festive season approaches, many homeowners forget the importance of preparing their gardens for winter. Preparing your garden for the cold not only shields your tools and outdoor winter furniture from the elements but also keeps your outdoor space in prime condition for spring. It’s all about keeping your outdoor space in great shape during the holiday season and beyond.
Here’s a comprehensive guide on getting your garden ready for winter, especially if you have wooden furniture that requires more attention to handle the cold and damp.
Protecting garden furniture
If you want to leave your wooden furniture outside during winter, correct waterproofing and treatment techniques are essential. While most types of wood can handle a little rain, in winter the rain is heavier and lasts longer, which could cause problems.
To protect and waterproof your wooden furniture, follow these simple steps:
• Remove loose debris – Use a bristled brush in the direction of the wood grain, to get rid of leaves, twigs, and dust, as well as stubborn dirt and algae.
• Gently clean your wood – For wood coated in biological growth, like green algae, you’ll need to clean the surface more thoroughly before painting. This is typical of horizontal surfaces, decking in particular. For furniture you’ll need to apply a biocidal cleaner and use a pumpaction pressure sprayer for even coverage. Wait at least an hour for the cleaner to work effectively before rinsing with a gentle garden hose.
If the wood is particularly discoloured after at least a year or so of exposure, you can also use a wood scrub such as Roxil Wood Scrub Gel. Using a brush or a roller, apply this
over the surface and leave for up to an hour. Then using a brush and some water simply scrub the surface to reveal a lighter, fresher colour to your wood.
• Apply a wood preserver - To protect and waterproof the wood from rot and mould, you’ll need to apply a wood preserver. While you can choose clear options, there are also some great coloured options can give your garden a pop of colour. Use a brush or, for a more even finish, spray to apply the preserver and let it dry for one hour.
• Apply a wood waterproofer
- Waterproofing will offer longterm protection to garden wood from heavy rain. Using a brush or roller, apply a waterproofing cream like Roxil Wood Protection Cream and let it absorb into the wood for 24 hours. This will create a barrier on the surface that will reduce the effects of water such as warping, mould and rot. It’s great for furniture and fences, and even garden tool handles.
While preparing your garden for the colder months is essential, there are some practices that can cause more harm than good. Here are the top things to avoid:
• Avoid the pressure washer –Pressure washing can be destructive to wooden surfaces as it can damage or strip off the top layer of the wood. This opens up the pore structure and increases rate of moisture ingress. High levels of moisture will lead to more serious problems, such as warping and rot, which will reduce the lifespan of your wooden furniture, sheds, and decking.
• Don’t ignore the weather forecast –
Whether you’re cleaning, painting, or waterproofing, each stage will need a couple of hours of preparation and sometimes up to 24 hours for the product to work its magic. The wood will need to stay dry at every point – apart from rinsing off cleaner, of course, - and this is why it’s so important to do it while the good weather lasts.
• Put down the aggressive cleaners –If the wood is discoloured by mould or moss, it can be tempting to want to use bleach to get rid of the tainted colouring. However, these aggressive cleaners will damage the surface of the wood much like aggressive pressure washing.
Getting your garden ready for winter is a straightforward process that can make a huge difference when spring arrives. From protecting wooden furniture to knowing what to avoid, these simple steps will keep your garden functional for the next growing season.
With the right preparation, you can enjoy a low-maintenance winter garden and have everything ready for when the weather begins to warm up.
Since 1963, Civic Trees have been at the forefront of tree relocation throughout the UK, from importing the very first Vermeer tree spade into Europe, to designing and constructing the Newman Frame which is now used worldwide.
Civic Trees are always looking to pioneer new techniques that aid the relocation of trees.
Tree relocation is a concept that involves uprooting trees from one location and transplanting them to another. With current events surrounding environmental issues, relocating trees is even more important now than ever before. By relocating trees instead of cutting them down, we can preserve nature’s beauty while also promoting sustainability.
We are proud of our reputation for efficient, cost effective and reliable tree relocation throughout the UK. You can be confident that through our exemplary commitment to staff
training and development, our work meets the highest technical and safety standards.
We believe that a tree is only as good as the way it is handled, planted and maintained. Ground preparation and aftercare are crucial to the successful establishment of the tree.
Before we start the tree move process we arrange a site visit with our client and assess the tree’s health, size, and root system. We also create a site specific risk assessment to ensure the whole operation is carried out safely.
Our team of experts use specialised equipment to excavate the tree with minimal damage to its root structure. The tree is then carefully transported to its new location,
where it is replanted and nurtured to ensure its successful adaptation.
Our experienced team will know and understand the benefits and methods of loading and unloading a tree using the correct lifting techniques in order not to stress the tree or root ball. This is imperative for the longevity of the tree’s life.
In conclusion, tree relocation is an environmentally friendly method that allows us to preserve nature’s beauty while supporting urban growth. By carefully uprooting and relocating trees, we can maintain the valuable benefits they provide to our communities.
Civic Trees prides itself in paying great attention to the health and well being of our clients most prized asset “THE TREE”.

When our design firm, Victoria Holly Interiors, was brought on for this landscape project in Los Angeles, the backyard was a blank canvas with a large lot of grass with a detached garage. Our clients wanted a more functional outdoor space but weren’t sure how to bring their vision to life, so we stepped in to help create a cohesive design that would work for both their lifestyle and the existing architecture of their home.
The initial focus was to install a pool that felt like a natural extension of the home. We used the length behind the house for a pool design that echoed the home’s clean lines and black tones. Achieving this balance was all about the materials, like selecting a moody concrete color that complemented the house’s exterior to incorporating slate pool tiles that tied in with the home’s stairs.
Designing a pool isn’t just about fitting it into a space, it’s also about understanding how the scale of the pool will transform the feel of the yard. When we were looking at the grassy lot, it was hard to envision how a pool could occupy the space without being overpowering. We wanted to ensure the pool didn’t dominate the backyard, especially since the family wanted to keep a grassy area where their kids could play. By keeping part of the yard
open, we were able to create zones for different functional outdoor spaces. So we were able to have areas for the pool, dining, lounge, and play.
The transformation of the old garage into a back guest house also guided the design, as we made sure the pool
was accessible from this new space too. Which was an important feature for grandparents when they would come to stay.
For the outdoor dining area, we chose materials that emphasized simplicity and durability. Poured concrete created a sturdy, unfussy
foundation for a teak dining table and playful green chairs that bring a touch of color to the space. We opted for olive trees and ficus to keep the landscaping simple and unfussy to also mirror the home’s style.
Our clients initially started working on the outdoor space themselves, but soon realized they needed our expertise to bring their ideas together. Sometimes, it’s those early challenges—figuring out where the pool should go or balancing open space with built features—that make the end result even more rewarding. Ultimately, the transformation turned a plain backyard into a beautiful and functional outdoor space that mirrors the architecture of the home. And it embraced the California indoor and outdoor living.

New Year New Garden! Create a seamless outdoor living space for all to enjoy next summer with the UltraScape Domestic Range.
Decking can transform an outdoor area, providing a versatile, attractive, and functional extension of your home. However, to ensure your deck is safe, durable, and meets your needs, it’s essential to understand the different types of decking available, the best installation practices, and the importance of proper treatment and support structure.
Here are essential considerations when planning your deck:
Choose the right decking
Selecting the right type of decking for your project is the first step to achieving a durable, functional outdoor area. Consider:
1. Heavy-Duty Decking: This is designed for high-traffic areas and is designed to withstand significant wear and tear. This type of decking is ideal for larger or more frequently used spaces, such as public areas or large family patios, where boards need to withstand constant foot traffic and heavier loads.
2. Non-Slip Decking: Safety should be a top priority, especially in wet, shaded, or icy conditions. Non-slip decking boards are manufactured with textured surfaces or embedded grip materials to reduce the risk of
slips and falls all year round. This is particularly important for areas near pools, hot tubs, garden steps, or shaded gardens where moisture is more prevalent.
3. Standard Decking: For generalpurpose areas, standard decking provides an affordable yet effective solution. While it may not have the additional features of heavyduty or non-slip decking, standard boards are still durable and visually appealing for residential use, and feature the all-important grooves for protection against slips, making them suitable for patios, dining areas, or smaller garden decks. When choosing your decking type, consider the intended use of the space, the level of foot traffic, and potential safety concerns to ensure that your selection aligns with your needs.
Proper installation goes beyond simply laying boards; correct orientation and adherence to best practices play a critical role in the deck’s performance and safety. Here are some key considerations:
• Orientation of decking boards:
To help prevent slipping, decking boards should be installed horizontally to the primary direction
of travel. This setup provides additional traction underfoot.
• Debunking common myths about board orientation: A recent misconception is that decking boards should be installed with the smooth side facing up. However, the correct installation method is to have the ridged side facing up, as it provides increased grip and channels water away, helping prevent slippery surfaces. This myth-busting tip is essential for homeowners to remember when planning their deck installation for both safety and aesthetics.
Additionally, ensure that your installer is knowledgeable about local regulations and best practices for decking installation, as these can vary by region.
For a deck that stands the test of time, choose decking materials that come with a comprehensive guarantee. A long guarantee reflects the manufacturer’s confidence in their materials and craftsmanship. This assurance means that should any issues arise, you have protection against unexpected costs.
A solid guarantee often covers defects in materials and
workmanship, providing peace of mind that your investment is safe. When researching options, don’t hesitate to ask potential suppliers about their warranties and what they cover, such as any stipulations like re-treating or staining every year to comply. A reputable manufacturer will stand by their products and offer you a reliable guarantee without hassle.
The treatment and installation of your decking’s support frame are crucial for its stability and longevity. Treated decking boards and support materials help prevent rot, decay, and moisture damage, ensuring that your deck remains structurally sound over time.
The support frame is the backbone of your deck, providing stability and distributing weight evenly. A properly installed and treated frame is critical for structural integrity, especially in damp or uneven ground conditions. A solid, wellmaintained frame prevents sagging or warping and keeps the deck surface level, ensuring a safe and visually appealing result.
Hiring a professional installer with a solid track record is essential.
That’s why we created our Approved Installer scheme—a network of vetted experts who know our products inside and out, and how to install them to perfection. Look
for someone experienced in proper techniques, especially if your garden has unique features or challenging terrains. A good installer will be able to navigate these complexities and ensure that your decking is secure and visually appealing. Ask for references or examples of their previous work to gauge their expertise.
Consider different heights for your decking to open up possibilities in your garden. Elevated decks not only create a stunning visual impact but also provide practical benefits. For instance, they can offer additional storage space underneath, which is especially
useful for storing garden tools, furniture, or seasonal items.
Furthermore, varying the height of your deck can help level out awkward terrains, creating a more usable and aesthetically pleasing space. This approach can enhance the overall design of your garden, making it feel larger and more organised. Think about integrating built-in seating or planters at different levels to enhance the garden’s functionality and style.
To keep your decking looking fresh and safe, it’s important to establish a routine maintenance schedule. Regularly cleaning off moss, lichen, or debris is essential not only for aesthetic reasons but also to prevent slippery conditions that can pose safety hazards.
Use a gentle cleaning solution and a soft brush to maintain the surface, avoiding harsh chemicals that could damage the wood. This proactive approach can extend the life of your decking and keep it looking new for years to come.
Investing in durable materials, professional installation, and routine maintenance will ensure your decking is not just beautiful but built to last. With the right choices, your garden can transform into a stunning outdoor oasis that you’ll enjoy for years to come.
Artificial lawns are rapidly rising in popularity, with Aviva reporting in 2022 that 10% of UK homes have replaced at least part of their outdoor space with faux lawns, however, how many know how to properly care for it?
Adrian Buttress, managing director of PermaLawn, part of PermaGroup, said: “Artificial lawn is a fantastic investment that can look great yearround. Overall, it’s relatively low maintenance, and certainly doesn’t require the regular mowing of a traditional lawn, but a small amount of work can go a long way to protect the lawn for years to come.
“As we progress through autumn and into winter, it’s essential artificial lawn owners get prepared whether it’s installed in your home, a golfing green or a kids play area.
“The most important thing to do to prepare your artificial lawn for winter is to ensure it is clear of debris. Following the fall of autumn leaves, the drainage holes within the lawn can get blocked, leading to increased surface water and, eventually, moss growth. All of these things can make the lawn slippery and dangerous, and moss can even reduce the lifespan of the lawn.
“To prevent this happening, clearing leaves with a plastic rake or soft bristle brush will ensure effective drainage can occur over the wet winter months. Don’t use a metal rake as this could also cause damage to the lawn.
“Additionally, avoiding foot traffic on the lawn when it has snowed or is frosty is important as the material can become brittle and break, which over time thins the strands of lawn and impacts the overall appearance. Occasionally walking on the lawn won’t be a huge problem, but it’s best to avoid consistent use in these conditions.
“No matter how heavy the snow or ice is, don’t be tempted to use chemicals such as ice-melting agents. The ingredients in products like anti-freeze can actually damage the lawn material and interfere with the drainage system, so natural melting is what we’d advise.
“One thing that should be avoided in all seasons is firepits and fireworks. It can be tempting for Bonfire Night or Christmas parties to light a fire to outside, but the heat will damage any artificial lawn, similarly to traditional grass, and will melt the fibers ruining the grass.
“Overall investing a few hours in preparing your artificial grass for winter will have much longer positive impacts on the life span of the lawn in the future. If well maintained, these lawns can last well beyond their standard sevenyear warranty, compared to the oneyear warranty of a natural lawn.”

As the autumn draws in, spending your days lazing in the garden might seem a distant memory. But as attention shifts to garden plans for next summer, here’s what most Brits would want to put in theirs.
Research has shown that whilst the average British garden contains outdoor furniture, a patio and barbecue, the UK’s dream of their outdoor space including a summer house, decking and a fire pit, with more than a third of UK homeowners choosing these aspirational items if they were creating the gardens of their dreams.
According to new research, 36% of people said they would feature a luxurious summer house in their dream garden, while 34% said a fire pit and 33% chose decking to complete their aspirational space.
The outdoor living trends survey, which was carried out by Trex, the world’s number one decking brand, reveals how important people consider their outdoor spaces and reflects how much money they would be willing to spend if budgets were limitless.
While a summer house would cost approximately £5,000 to install
in a UK garden, a swimming pool, arguably the most expensive of dream additions, costs, on average, £20,000 - £50,000.
The inclusion of such aspirational garden features on Brits’ wishlists can be attributed to the shift to outdoor living that began during the pandemic. The latest research shows people continue to place a high value on their gardens, seeing them as an extension of their homes.
Social media has also played a role in inspiring peoples’ gardens – and, potentially, increased appetites for luxury additions – with the same survey revealing over two-thirds of under-35s use social media platforms for garden inspiration.
Bethany Perez, brand manager for Trex, said: “We’re delighted that decking features so high up the list of dream garden additions - but not surprised.
“Decking instantly transforms an outdoor space, it is the perfect base for entertaining, relaxing and al fresco dining and really helps homeowners make the most of their gardens.”
The survey also found: Other popular aspirational items included hot tubs (31%) pizza ovens (27%) and a swimming pool (19%)
• 44% of respondents aged 18-24 would pick a swimming pool as their first choice their ideal garden, while 48% of the over 55s went for garden furniture
Artificial grass and children’s play equipment were the least favourite additions with 13% and 16%, respectively, of respondents selecting these
• The top five most common items in the average UK outdoor space are garden furniture, lawns, sheds, patios and barbecues.

The Wood Protection Association (WPA) prides itself on being recognised as an authoritative and independent trade body. With experience and knowledge to speak about and advise on all matters concerning the industrial treatment of timber –through preservation, wood modification or factory applied flame retardants.
Established for many years, it has always been our mission to provide guidance to specifiers, contractors, engineers and architects on the best ways to ensure wood is fit for its intended purpose.
Nowhere is the fitness for purpose of treated wood more important than for applications in contact with the ground, frequently wet and/or providing exterior structural support - categorised as Use Class 4 (UC4). Typical UC4 applications include: fence posts, retaining walls, landscaping timbers, playground equipment, decking posts, joists and beams, boardwalk substructures and any external application where structural integrity is essential for user safety.
Commonly used, sustainable softwood species are not durable enough for outdoor use unless correctly treated with
a wood preservative (or upgraded using a modification process). BS 8417 the British Standard for industrial wood preservation. But navigating your way to correctly treated timber is far from easy which is where WPA’s Benchmark quality scheme comes in.
Finding a supplier you can trust
The ‘WPA Benchmark’ quality scheme verifies that a treated wood product like fencing or decking has been correctly treated to achieve the 15 or 30-years desired service life performance set in BS 8417. Treaters must pass an initial verification audit and subsequent annual surveillance audits, providing evidence to demonstrate they are treating correctly to industry standards.
The scheme is further strengthened by the WPA ‘Approval Scheme for Wood Preservatives’ which offers independent expert approval of the minimum preservative retention required to work in ground applications.
The schemes are designed to give purchasers greater confidence when sourcing preservative treated wood components. Visit www.thewpa.org for more information.
When buying pressure treated timber ask your supplier to declare, in writing, the standard of treatment. Even better, ask for Benchmark accredited treated timber.
With Autumn in our midst, it is a great opportunity for landscapers to carry out garden maintenance and prepare for the upcoming winter months. As the days get shorter and darker, lighting becomes vital to a landscaper’s design plan. There are various things to consider when it comes to lighting options, such as highlighting features, rather than just drawing attention to what’s directly in front of you, establishing focal points and experimenting with perspective, as well as considering the quality of lighting and direction. Lumena Lights stocks a variety of 12V and 240V outdoor light designs and colours to suit your every need.
Lighting is a crucial component for setting the mood, ask any
photographer or filmmaker! When the sun sets, the same principle applies to landscapes. Lighting extends the normal day, allowing people to enjoy more of their evening outside by ensuring safety and establishing focal points. A thoughtfully considered lighting scheme will add a whole new dimension to an outside space and design plan. By blending various lighting types and fixtures, seating areas, pathways, and foliage can be transformed to create a magical atmosphere and depth, all while ensuring their space is fully functional and safe.
Elevate your design by choosing from various materials and finishes, techniques, and colours. Lumena
offers a range of finishes, some of which blend the source of light in with the surroundings at night, bringing all attention to the main attraction. During the daytime, if the light fittings are noticeable, they must look the part too! Lumena has created the perfect balance with attractive finishes to blend in or stand out accordingly.
Alongside your choice of finish, there are five main garden lighting techniques to consider: ornamental, amenity, task, access, and security. These are fulfilled by using various lighting effects to enhance your design such as downlighting, uplighting, grazing, moonlighting, mirroring, washing, accent lighting (or spotlighting), steplighting & vista
lighting, silhouetting, spreadlighting, backlighting (or halo effect), shadowing, crosslighting, area lighting, and floodlighting.
For example, a really effective and functional technique is spreadlighting (ornamental & access). Generally, spreadlights, such as the Charleston Cobra Spreadlight (pictured), are low-level, glare-free luminaires, creating a pool of light designed for illuminating pathways, steps, and planting areas.
Another popular technique is uplighting (ornamental). This is a great technique for highlighting focal points in the garden design. These lights are usually situated at ground level, aimed at the architecture or foliage, and can help enhance texture.
The AlvaLED Spike Spotlight is the ideal light for uplighting. It can be installed within a 240V circuit, or alternatively, as part of Lumena’s Versa 12V Plug & Play range, the
extra low voltage option for selfinstallation! This option is perfect for autumn as it is rated for use outdoors in all U.K. seasons and is particularly suited to damp conditions.
The AlvaLED comes in 5 finishes: Black, Cocoa, Green, Titanium, and 316 Marine-Grade Stainless Steel. Each finish can be used to achieve different aesthetics. The AlvaLED in a Cocoa finish (anodised aluminium) is the perfect option for fitting in with the Autumn aesthetic! It is designed to blend in with earth, wood, and bark in traditional and contemporary settings, with a touch of class, similar to copper in appearance but at a fraction of the price. It is a great choice for uplighting greenery with the ability to blend in with its surroundings but looks stunning in daylight too. When paired with a warm white lamp (maximum 2700K), you can ensure a less disruptive design for wildlife, such as bats, whilst creating the perfect cosy feeling and aesthetically pleasing glow. Additionally, Lumena offers a variety of different dichroic coloured lenses (purple, red, orange, yellow, green, moonlight, and blue)
which can be used with the AlvaLED to enhance autumnal tones and the appearance of plants, trees, or ornaments within your design.
Another perfect design for that autumnal aesthetic is Lumena’s Radiata Range! The Radiata Path Light Range is created with sustainably sourced solid radiata pine timber, which is then CNC machined by a top FSC-certified timber supplier, specifically to incorporate our luminaires. These stylish wooden path lights are sleeper and post styles, built to withstand all weather conditions and heavy duty in structure. This is a natural material, which will weather, although the Tanalith E preservative treatment applied helps increase the
moisture levels which, in exchange, reduces the cracking of the wood.
Autumn is the best season to install these wooden posts as the sun is less intense and reduces the risk of rapid drying, preventing immediate cracking. The Radiata range offers various designs that enrich your landscape plan with warm tones; a great example is the Radiata Post.
This post light offers two designs, the Eyelite and the Slatlite, available in an Aged Silver finish or a Rustic Bronze finish. Rustic bronze is the ultimate autumnal tone, with both the timber and luminaire seamlessly blending in and complimenting one another. Aged silver adds a slightly more contemporary feel with a
luminaire that stands out from the timber.
Lumena Lights offers a variety of finishes and light temperatures which will work perfectly with any autumnal colour scheme; not only enhancing it but completing it. There are a number of outdoor lighting solutions to fit all needs and aesthetics.

In the world of construction and stone fabrication, precision is key. From creating intricate designs to ensuring a perfect fit, the ability to template accurately can make or break a project. Aquacut, with its expertise in the processing and fabrication of materials like stone and porcelain, offers a state-of-the-art laser templating service that caters to the diverse needs of architects, contractors, and designers. As a leader in the industry, we understand the importance of precision, and our templating services have been developed with this in mind.
Laser templating is a revolutionary technology that allows us to create accurate, detailed templates for a wide variety of materials even for challenging installations. This is particularly essential for professionals working with stone, concrete, or porcelain, where even the slightest error can result in costly mistakes. With laser templating, we can ensure millimetre-perfect results, saving time and reducing the risk of errors that may arise from manual templating methods.
Aquacut’s laser templating service is ideal for creating complex shapes, curves, and intricate designs. Whether you’re working on bespoke architectural features, large-scale installations, or simple cut-to-size projects, our templating system guarantees accuracy and precision. From staircases and flooring to worktops and decorative stonework, laser templating offers a modern, highly effective solution for a variety of applications in construction and landscaping.
At Aquacut, we offer two templating options to accommodate the specific needs of our clients:
1. Client-Supplied Templates: For those who prefer to supply their own templates, we accept models in materials such as card, wood, or plastic. These are typically provided by the client’s installers and serve as a foundation for creating digital templates in our CAD systems. This option is ideal for clients who already have a clear vision and plan but need an expert fabricator to bring their project to life.
2. On-Site Templating: Our most popular service involves our expert team visiting your site anywhere in the UK to carry out laser templating in person. This method is by far the most accurate and reliable, as our trained professionals use advanced laser systems to take precise measurements on-site. By directly measuring the area where materials will be installed, we can identify potential challenges early on, ensuring that the final result fits seamlessly.
Both options integrate seamlessly into our CAD (Computer-Aided Design) systems, which allow us to transform basic templates into detailed, professional blueprints. This approach ensures that every cut made during fabrication aligns perfectly with the template, eliminating guesswork and ensuring a flawless final product.
At Aquacut, our service doesn’t end with laser templating. We offer comprehensive fabrication services that bring your project to life with precision and care. Our CNC waterjet cutting ensures pinpoint accuracy,
allowing us to cut intricate shapes and designs from materials like stone and porcelain. Additionally, we provide expert profiling services, crafting custom edges, and features to meet your design specifications. Our team can also cut grooves to create reduced-slip surfaces and bond materials together to produce seamless step treads and risers. By combining templating with our fabrication services, Aquacut delivers a complete solution, ensuring consistency and precision from start to finish.
We are very good at what we do. Aquacut has earned a reputation
for providing high-quality templating and fabrication services to professionals in the construction, landscaping, tile and stone industries. Your garden is the easiest way to connect with nature – and with a little TLC, it can be the perfect sanctuary. Spending time in your garden is great for your mental health too, with over three million Brits noticing an improvement in their mental health once they moved out of an urban area and into a home with a garden or outdoor space.
Levelling up your garden doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds and outdoor tiling is proving incredibly popular, with over 8,000 Brits googling “garden tiling” each month. Here, tiling experts Instarmac find out the best ways to transform your garden with outdoor tiling.
How popular are garden renovations right now?
Gardens have been a key area of focus for Brits looking to upgrade their homes ever since the pandemic – during 2022, the garden was the second-most popular area of the home to renovate. It’s hardly surprising, given that we weren’t allowed outside, but garden renovations have remained popular ever since. In fact, 51% of Brits spent
time upgrading their garden in 2023.
During 2023, patio or terrace renovations were the secondmost popular garden renovation amongst Brits, so expect outdoor tiling to remain trendy throughout 2024. And, with early predictions reckoning 2024 could be the hottest year on record, it’s little surprise that Brits are planning to use outdoor tiling to level up their garden. But how can you make sure your tiling looks professional?
Porcelain is becoming a major player in the world of outdoor tiling, with garden enthusiasts increasingly preferring it over pricier materials like natural stone. Porcelain tiling is long-lasting, lightweight, and incredibly easy to clean, making it a garden owner’s dream.
9,900 Brits are searching for “porcelain paving” each month, a 22% increase compared to this time last year. So, if you want to get ahead of the game, think about using porcelain for your garden renovation this year.
Josh Jinks, UltraTile Brand Manager, says: “Porcelain might be a little more expensive than ceramic, but it’s more resistant to cracks and better protected against the elements. So, if you want a build that lasts, porcelain could be a great selection.”
Mosaics are hardly a new trend, but you can expect mosaic tiling to be a big player in 2024! Commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms, mosaic tiling uses small, irregular shards of coloured glass, ceramics or other materials to create a stunning visual feature.
Jinks comments: “When used in your garden, mosaics do a fantastic job of catching the eye. Try using them sparingly alongside more traditional forms of tiling to create attentiongrabbing features and emphasise your favourite areas of your garden.”
Mosaic tiling is one of the most commonly searched-for forms of tiling on Google. Over 18,000 Brits are searching for “mosaic tiling” each month, indicating just how popular mosaics are shaping up to be in 2024.
If you’re lucky enough to have a vast garden with plenty of space to play with, outdoor kitchens are likely to remain popular as Brits chase the continental al fresco dining experience. The versatility offered by a modular outdoor kitchen is proving popular, giving you more flexibility over the layout of your outdoor cooking area.
Google searches for “modular outdoor kitchen” are up 24% yearon-year. Your first step towards the perfect outdoor kitchen, however, is setting the perfect base. Tiling offers a safer and more permanent base than wooden decking, given that you’re likely to be barbecuing out there. You can also trust your tiling to handle the weight of your heavy new kitchen equipment with more ease than wood.
Josh says: “Try larger tiles in neutral colours for your floor and keep grout
thin to ensure easy movement of your kitchen equipment. Smaller, more detailed tiling provides the perfect foil when used for your kitchen’s splashback tiles!”
As well as creating endless possibilities for your outdoor space, an external tiling installation can add up to 20% to your home’s property value. So, if you’re thinking about selling up in the future, investing in a tiled area could be a great idea.
But, in order to maximise your profits, you’ll want to make sure your new tiling matches your home’s aesthetic. If you’re the owner of a sleek, modern home, try a minimalist approach. Go for neutral tones, and accentuate your tiles with gravel features for the ultimate classy look.
If you own a heritage home, don’t be afraid to make a big statement with
loud, Victorian-style geometric tiles. Combine with plain tiles to create focal points in your garden or go big and bold with an entirely patterned patio!
Putting sustainability first
If you’re looking to level up your garden with some hard landscaping – also known as hardscaping – in 2024, be sure to consider whether you’re opting for permeable or nonpermeable tile paving. Traditional patios tend to be non-permeable, meaning that rainfall runs off into your gutters or drains and potentially causing issues.
A permeable grouting option like ProPave Grout absorbs rainwater back into the ground without compromising the integrity of your install. This form of installation also makes sure that the ground beneath can get all the nutrients it needs. If you’re looking to improve the sustainability credentials of your garden features, this is a fantastic way to do so.
When you’re planning your garden tiling installation, don’t feel like you have to limit yourself to the floor alone. Existing garden structures, like planters, sheds and garages, are a great opportunity to add some vertical points of interest to your garden design.
This can also be a great way of upcycling existing structures and breathing new life into tired sheds or garages. If your plan is to upgrade your home and garden gradually, this is the perfect way to combine the old and the new without breaking the bank.
So, if you’re thinking about making some improvements to your garden, a new tiling installation could be the perfect way to do it. With a wide range of different styles and applications at your disposal, the world’s your oyster when it comes to your garden.
Larsen Building Products, a pioneering force in the construction materials industry for almost 50 years, is making significant strides towards achieving sustainable production. Powered entirely by renewable electricity from Power NI, part of the Energia Group, Larsen’s production facilities now operate with zero carbon emissions. This move marks a major milestone not just for the company but also for the broader construction industry, as Larsen exemplifies how businesses can balance innovation, performance, and environmental responsibility.
Larsen’s adoption of green energy is a crucial step towards reducing its carbon footprint and mitigating
the environmental impact of its operations. Situated in the heart of Belfast’s docklands, Larsen’s production plants are now powered exclusively by local, renewable electricity supplied by Power NI. This shift means that Larsen’s manufacturing process no longer contributes to carbon emissions, a significant achievement in an industry that traditionally relies on energy-intensive operations.
Power NI’s renewable energy comes from a mix of wind, solar, and other sustainable sources, providing Larsen with a reliable and ecofriendly energy supply. This transition to green energy aligns with the global movement toward
decarbonisation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Larsen’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond its energy use to its extensive product range. The company’s Streetscape Eco range is a standout example of how Larsen is reducing the environmental impact of construction materials. The Streetscape Eco range is fully
compliant with the British Standard BS7533, meaning it exceeds the performance characteristics required for paving and landscaping projects.
Significant investment in the research and development of the product range has led to considerable carbon reduction by using the Streetscape Eco products. The environmental benefit of using just one tonne is equivalent to the carbon absorbed by growing 1 tree for 10 years or not driving a car for 149 miles. These figures demonstrate the substantial positive impact that using Larsen’s products can have, both in terms of reducing emissions and promoting greener urban development. As more architects, developers, specifiers, and local governments prioritise sustainability in construction, the demand for eco-friendly materials like those offered by Larsen is only set to grow.
The impact of Larsen’s sustainable materials can be seen in some of the most iconic urban landscapes across the UK and Ireland. The company’s Streetscape Eco products have been used in high-profile projects across prestigious locations such as Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, and The City of London. These landmarks are renowned for their elegance and historical significance, and Larsen’s high-quality, highperformance products help ensure that these areas remain beautiful, functional, and sustainable for generations to come.
As Larsen approaches its 50th anniversary in 2025, the company’s legacy of innovation continues to be a driving force. From its early days, Larsen has fostered a culture of research and development, with the engineering of new products and improving existing ones to meet the evolving needs of the construction industry.
Whether it’s for paving, landscaping, or other construction applications, the new Fusion XT Eco range is a complete external paving and tiling
solution comprising five products. Supplied in durable buckets, these products are specially formulated to achieve professional results. This product line, like the rest of Larsen’s portfolio, has been developed with both the customer and the environment in mind, ensuring that Larsen remains a trusted partner for architects, contractors, and developers.
Going live on the NBS Source online platform in May 2024, the company has now made it easier than ever for architects, specifiers, and contractors to integrate Larsen’s products into their projects. NBS Source is a powerful online tool that
allows industry professionals to add products quickly and easily to their specifications, streamlining the design and construction process. By being listed on NBS Source, Larsen ensures that its products are not only accessible but also top-of-mind for those working on construction projects. This move is part of the company’s broader strategy to support innovation and efficiency in the construction industry, helping professionals to design and build more sustainably.
The Larsen team have just returned from the Public Spaces Expo in ExCeL London, where the innovative Streetscape Eco product range
was showcased. Aimed at architects, developers, and contractors, the expo provided an ideal platform for Larsen to engage with key stakeholders in the construction and public spaces sectors. This debut is a significant step in expanding Larsen’s presence and influence in the urban development industry.
As Larsen celebrates its upcoming 50th anniversary in 2025, the company is poised for continued success and growth. Adopting 100% green energy across its Belfastbased production plants highlights the company’s focus on innovation to further develop sustainable products. As the company
celebrates five decades of success, it remains focused on its core values of quality, performance, innovation, and sustainability—values that will guide Larsen into the future as it continues to shape the construction industry in a way that benefits both people and the planet.

Located at the heart of Tottenham Court Road, Whitfield Gardens has long been a vibrant spot in London, celebrated for the iconic Fitzrovia Mural—a colourful depiction of life in the 1980s. In an ambitious initiative led by Camden Council, Whitfield Gardens was selected
for revitalisation under the West End Project, aimed at transforming public spaces for local residents and visitors alike. LDA Design was appointed to spearhead this scheme, with Woodscape producing a range bespoke street furniture to enhance the ambience and functionality of the space.
The project aimed to enhance the urban appeal of Whitfield Gardens by modernising and beautifying this high-footfall area, creating an inviting and warm atmosphere through integrated lighting features. It was essential to design the space with flexibility in mind, allowing for a range of future community events while promoting outdoor living—a vital consideration following the
increased demand for quality public spaces post-lockdown.
Woodscape was tasked with delivering custom hardwood seating and picnic tables. With subtle lighting, designed by Michael Grubb Studio, incorporated into the seating, these installations give the space a soft, inviting glow, transforming it into a more welcoming area for relaxation and social gathering, regardless of the time of day. The combination of naturally very durable hardwood materials and thoughtful lighting design brings an added dimension of comfort, enhancing the experience for those who live, work, and travel through the area.
Woodscape’s bespoke street furniture was crafted to enhance both the aesthetic and practical aspects of Whitfield Gardens. Each piece was designed and strategically placed to maximise the appeal of the space and create inviting, comfortable zones where visitors can pause and enjoy their surroundings. The furniture’s integrated lighting, carefully concealed within the design, adds warmth to the seating and boosts safety and visibility in the evenings. The lighting’s subtle glow draws people into the space even after dusk, encouraging evening visits and adding an elegant highlight to the urban landscape.
Flexibility was a core feature of the design, with many pieces of furniture being movable. This allows the seating and tables to adapt to the demands of various community events, offering organisers the flexibility to arrange and rearrange as needed. This adaptability is key to Camden Council’s vision of a
thriving outdoor community space and provides a framework for a multifunctional area where events, gatherings, and moments of calm can co-exist. Such a design ensures that the space remains an asset for the community over the years, evolving with the needs of the city and its residents.
Since its refurbishment, Whitfield Gardens has seen an enthusiastic response from locals and visitors alike. The seating has become a popular resting spot for people looking to take a break from their busy schedules, emphasising the area’s role as a peaceful retreat amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. The choice of naturally very durable hardwood adds to the area’s organic appeal, contrasting with the urban environment while blending into the garden setting. The improved accessibility and inviting design help foster a sense of community, promoting a broader citywide vision of sustainable, well-used outdoor areas.
The Fitzrovia Mural, restored by Global Street Art Agency, continues to serve as a beloved focal point, celebrating the vibrancy of the community. The new design complements this artwork, creating a cohesive experience that connects heritage with modernity. Residents and visitors can now enjoy a space that feels timeless yet contemporary, bringing people together in a dynamic but inviting public setting.
With its impactful transformation, Whitfield Gardens stands as a benchmark for innovative urban renewal, blending art, functionality, and community spirit in one of London’s most dynamic neighbourhoods.

Background:
Athlone, Co Westmeath is a thriving town in the centre of Ireland, equidistant between Dublin on the East coast and Galway on the West. The ambitious Urban Design and Regeneration Framework Plan includes a package of projects that aims to regenerate Athlone, realise its full potential as one of five Regional Growth Centres within Co Westmeath, and position it as a destination for tourism.
New road layouts and tree planting were undertaken at Dublin Gate Street (North and South), Mardyke Street North, and Marist Brothers’ Corner, with plans to pedestrianise Sean Costello Street, creating a link between the shopping areas of Athlone town centre.
The Regeneration Team, with funding from Project Ireland 2040, worked on the initial stages with McAdam Design and OPEN Landscape Architects. John Cradock Ltd was awarded the works contract in January 2023, with work starting quickly thereafter. John Cradock has been one of Ireland’s leading civil engineering and building contractors for over 30 years, the last 20 of which has included the delivery of several award-winning public realm projects.
Green-tech involvement: John Cradock had worked with Green-tech previously on the Waterford Greenway project, involving 48 trees that required geo-cellular support. Using their raft-style support system in that instance, they were keen to see Green-tech’s new TreeParker®
urban tree pit system, introduced to the market at Future Build at the beginning of March 2023. Although TreeParker® has been used over the years on high-profile, large public realm projects throughout mainland Europe and the Middle East, this was to be Green-tech’s first TreeParker® project in the UK and Ireland.
The Cradock’s team is used to working with geo-cellular tree pit systems and saw no problem with the straightforward, simple design of TreeParker®. However, as it was the first official installation, Green-tech sent a team to observe and offer assistance and guidance if needed. It turned out none was, as the system was straightforward and quicker to install than even the contractors expected.
As is common in a town centre, there was the expected multitude of service lines and pipes running through the rooting area at various levels and angles. However, due to the way that the TreeParker® units are assembled, this caused no problem whatsoever, the support legs simply straddled the service pipes, as can be seen in the photographs.
The new TreeParker® system comprises rigid, modular units made from reinforced, recycled polypropylene. The units enable
the ground above a tree pit to be trafficked, supporting the paving above (up to 56t/m2), whilst still protecting the soil below from compaction. This means that rather than needing to use a fast-draining and low organic structural tree soil, a soft, friable, organic topsoil can be used, which is ideal for successful tree establishment.
Although highly rigid, the units still provide 95% of their volume for rooting space. The heavy-duty, reinforced legs are available in various heights from the factory; 400, 600, 800mm, and 1, 1.2, and 1.5m. This gives a previously unheard-of flexibility with depth options, and more importantly, without the need to stack multiple units, saving installation time and money. It also enables the units, by having legs rather than side walls, to easily straddle, or work around service pipes and lines, as was demonstrated at Athlone.
Alasdair Innes from Green-tech adds, “The John Cradock team were impressed with the speed and ease with which the units went in, and the way the service pipes were easily worked around was a definite bonus. Working across four separate tree pit areas, Green-tech also supplied the necessary root barrier, along with Mona Relief irrigation pipes and tree anchors. Once the tree pits were installed, other groundworks were completed so the trees were not planted until Spring 2024. We look forward to seeing the trees flourish over the next few years.”
TreeParker is an urban tree planting cell system with superior functionality. The system can be installed in any tree planting space, even staggered or circular, making it easy to customise the tree pit design to your needs. It is manufactured by Treebuilders and distributed in the UK exclusively by Green-tech.

World renowned landscape garden designer, Tom StuartSmith to support The Royal High School Preservation Trust’s ambitious garden project
Plans for the Royal High School Building on Calton Hill are well underway including an ambitious garden project which will see exciting new gardens with free public access, created in the grounds of the building.
Designed through a collaboration between award-winning landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith OBE, and Edinburgh based landscape architects, OPEN (part of SLR), the
area will provide the first major new city centre public garden since Princes Street Gardens opened more than 200 years ago in 1820. The plans will give residents and visitors to Edinburgh access to a beautiful open space with outstanding views of both the capital and the surrounding landscape.
With an East and West Garden the aim is to provide an oasis of calm from the busy city centre while creating a contemporary setting that respects the neo-classical features of the former Royal High School building. Ensuring the area can be enjoyed by everyone has been a key principle of the design so the
gardens will be open daily with free entry for all. The creation of a very green garden has also been a fundamental part of the plans to increase biodiversity and create nature networks in the area.
The gardens will create a dynamic ecosystem, providing diverse food sources and habitats for local wildlife to support biodiversity and combat species decline. Using local materials and native plants, the design integrates with Calton Hill’s surrounding landscape, reinforcing both visual and ecological connections between the cultivated gardens and the natural environment.
The West Garden area has been designed to fit with the wild landscapes that surround the site, complementing its location at the foot of Calton Hill. It will feature native trees like Scots Pine, Birch and Rowan and other plants native to the region.
By contrast, the East Garden will be designed as an extensive flower garden and feature a large pergola along the Belvedere wall, one of the original features of the Royal High School building.
A programme of regular events will share knowledge about the gardens as well as other related topics like horticulture skills, biodiversity, and health and wellbeing. Community groups will be invited to use the gardens and learning opportunities focused on conservation, native species and precious micro-systems.
Tom Stuart-Smith and his team in collaboration with Edinburghbased landscape architects OPEN, were appointed to design and
curate the garden space. Tom’s work has been heavily influential in contemporary landscape design, with eight award-winning gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, plus a host of acclaimed gardens across the globe including RHS Bridgewater and the Queen’s Jubilee Garden at Windsor Castle. This partnership melds Tom’s renowned creative approach with OPEN’s deep understanding of Edinburgh’s urban fabric, promising a garden that will be both innovative in design and harmonious with its historic surroundings.
He said: “Edinburgh’s unique blend of urban architecture and dramatic landscape puts it in a league with cities like Athens and San Francisco. Our design aims to highlight this extraordinary setting while creating a tranquil retreat within the bustling city.
“The West and East gardens, though distinct in character, work in harmony to complement each other and the stunning architecture of the
Royal High School building. This site is truly exceptional - the views are spectacular, and the landscape is unparalleled. It’s a rare opportunity for a landscape designer to work on such site, and I’m confident that our plans will resonate with Edinburgh’s residents and visitors alike.”
Grant MacKenzie, Executive Director of the Royal High School Preservation Trust said: “Making the most of the outdoor space at the Royal High School building is a key part of our vision and we’re delighted to be unveiling our plans. These gardens will be the first new public garden space in Edinburgh city centre for centuries and they will become an area for everyone to enjoy. We want it to be a place for everyone to have access to and enjoy, and where better to take in such unrivalled views of the city than in a calming, tranquil garden environment.”
Work on the garden spaces will begin in 2025.
This groundbreaking £76 million initiative is one of Pictorial Meadow’s latest SuDs projects. The project has three core objectives: mitigating flood risks, enhancing biodiversity, and creating multifunctional green spaces.
The project aims to mitigate flood risks by incorporating a variety of nature-based solutions such as bioswales, detention basins, rain gardens and permeable pavements into the urban landscape to manage surface water runoff. The initiative will reduce flood risks for 90,000 residents, handling over 58 million litres of water and significantly improving local flood resilience. Additionally, the project will create 390 new jobs, further benefiting the community.
As part of The Green Estate Community Interest Company, Pictorial Meadows were able to provide an integrated solution that covered everything from substrate development to planting and ongoing maintenance.
The Green Estate developed a specialist substrate for the SuDS features, crafted from locally sourced, peat-free, reclaimed and recycled materials. This substrate is engineered to manage water infiltration and retention according to civil engineering standards, while providing optimal growing conditions for a range of ornamental and ecological plants.
Over 30,000 P9 plants specifically designed for bioswales and rain gardens were specified, sourced and dispatched. Additionally, over 3,000,000 perennial plants are being supplied in peat-free, plasticfree meadow turf mats, enhancing biodiversity and ecological functionality. The Pictorial Meadows’ horticultural teams are set to plant more than 25,000 square meters of specialist plants between October 2024 and March 2025.
To ensure the ongoing success of the SuDS features, a three-year maintenance program will be carried out. This will include irrigation, weed control, cutting, green biomass
collection for composting, silt removal, and the replacement of any soil and plant losses.
Though the project is not scheduled for completion until 2025, there have been positive results. The 20,000 SuDS features that have been installed have successfully managed stormwater during recent storms, significantly reducing flood hotspots.
Additionally, the project has already delivered environmental and biodiversity gains. Key areas like Mansfield’s historic marketplace have been transformed into vibrant rain gardens that combine ecological function with aesthetic appeal. These revitalised spaces are now greener, more attractive and more enjoyable for residents and they have contributed to mitigating the urban heat island effect and led to better air quality through reduced pollution.
With over 20 years of experience, Pictorial Meadows, part of The Green Estate Community Interest Company, continues to create sustainable, resilient urban spaces. Their mission is to integrate nature into urban planning, making cities more liveable and ecologically balanced.

Established in 2021, Rymer Trees and Hedging has distinguished itself as an innovative tree nursery focusing on cell-grown, peatfree sustainable tree cultivation. Specialising in one- and two-year-old UK native hedging and woodland species, the nursery supplies to multiple sectors – from large grantaided schemes to smaller scale landscape design projects.
Led by a dynamic board of directors boasting extensive experience across arboriculture, farming, landscape design and horticulture, Rymer Trees and Hedging is backed by a passionate and dedicated on-site team led by Director and Nursery Manager Harry Hoblyn –2023 alumni of the renowned Pro Landscaper 30 under 30 award.
“Our emphasis is to build innovation within the peat-free sector” says Harry. “We are dedicated to producing high quality trees from seed, with excellent establishment rates whilst minimising our environmental footprint”. Reports from clients of 95% establishment rates confirm the teams longheld view that cell-grown offers a superior option when planting for our changing climate and somewhat unpredictable seasons. Their focus on minimising the nursery’s environmental footprint is reflected in every aspect of operations –from rainwater harvesting and maximising waste reduction efforts to biodegradable and recyclable products used for packaging.
Alongside their offering of highquality, robust ready-to-plant whips, Rymer Trees and Hedging is pleased to be a premier UK stockist of Defender+ tree and shrub shelters.
“Defender+ are our chosen shelter brand for a multitude of reasons” says Lizzie Smith - Sales and Marketing Manager. “Key features include inbuilt stake pocketsnegating the need for plastic ties whilst aiding ease of installation and monitoring, a life span of 5-7 years, after which the shelter can be recycled, and it’s flat pack design, allowing ease of transportation.” Defender+ ticks the boxes for
the nursery’s environmental commitments – but the standout fact is the reduction in shipping volumes from the flat-pack design. When compared like for like, the volume of one pallet of Defender+ 1.2m shelters equates to a threepallet delivery of round guards – resulting in a huge reduction in shipping and therefore carbon footprint.
As the nursery expands its offering into protection and planting accessories, the 2024-2025 harvest is well underway, with the team offering a comprehensive, personalised service to their valued clients – new and returning.

The proposal for the requalification of Piazza Matteotti’s public gardens offered an opportunity to re-design a historic place from the early 1900s, which had been distorted by stratification of subsequent interventions, and to restore a new identity to the gateway to Castiglion Fiorentino’s historic center (Arezzo -Tuscany), providing citizens with a welcoming and vital space in one of the most beautiful terraces on the Val di Chiana.
The design aims to simplify and hierarchize the elements that compose the space, emphasizing once again the vegetation that,
with the new planimetric design, is back to being the protagonist. The perimeter “solids” represented by the shrubby flowerbeds are contrasted by the “voids” of the central squares in which to rest in the shade of the trees.
The new draining pavement allows for a more inclusive use while the architectural elements, thanks to the unified and careful selection of materials, are balanced between functionality and aesthetics.
The design scheme provides a contemporary reinterpretation of the garden design dating back to
the 1930s, restoring clear hierarchies between paths, “little squares,” and resting spaces, and adapting these elements to contemporary usage needs.

The RHS will use AI to help build a knowledge bank of cultivated plants for specific uses, such as pollination, pollution capture and water management, as it launches a new five year programme of work to commence in 2025.
Plants for Purpose will see the charity work in collaboration with the University of Nottingham to develop a deep learning tool that will identify characteristics among the more than 400,000 different plant cultivars found in the UK that RHS and wider industry research has shown to be beneficial.
For example, RHS research has previously revealed that rough surfaced leaves are most adept at capturing particulate pollution. Machine learning techniques that reliably quantify texture, can be used to identify specimens from the RHS herbarium - a vast collection of dried plant specimens - with hairs and scales. These plant trait matches will be cross checked by botanists and horticultural scientists and definitive
guides will be published over the course of the next five years.
The knowledge bank will also include plants for biodiversity, health and wellbeing, thermal regulation, and carbon capture, helping to grow the pool of plants used by gardeners and mitigating the effects of the biodiversity crisis, climate change and urbanisation. Alistair Griffiths, Director of Science at the RHS, said: “What we plant today needs to benefit us tomorrow so coupling RHS science with the University of Nottingham’s technology to identify the winning traits of 400,000 potential garden plants could see a revolution in what we find in gardens, new developments and town and city landscaping.”
Dr Michael Pound, Associate Professor, School of Computer Science, University of Nottingham, said: “It’s tremendously exciting to be part of a project that will deliver real impact for UK biodiversity. Deep learning excels when we have lots of data, and this is exactly what the
RHS herbarium offers. The trained networks will study hundreds of thousands of images to draw out the key features that distinguish plants. These can then be embedded into tools that allow RHS scientists to identify potentially important varieties in seconds rather than months.”
The RHS has also announced the first show garden to be managed using AI at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show next summer. The charity is already experimenting with the technology via its ChatBotanist tool, which is available to members and RHS Grow app users with the intention of freeing up advisors to conduct research that will inform planting choices and management techniques in UK gardens.
Plants for Purpose is part funded by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.

Last month, we had the pleasure of attending GroundsFest once again, and what an incredible event it was!
As exhibitors for the second year in a row, we proudly showcased some of our latest and most beloved playground equipment.
It was fantastic to see so many of our customers, both familiar and new, come by to explore our diverse product range.
Our stand featured a mix of timeless classics and innovative new designs.
The iconic Rocking Horse, a favourite for over four decades,
stood alongside exciting newcomers like the Vertex Climbing Boulder, and our latest thrill-seeking Adrenaline collection.
We were also thrilled to display our inclusive Nest Whirl roundabout, demonstrating our commitment to accessible play for all.
Additionally, our Wicksteed Robinia range was a highlight, offering a beautiful natural timber aesthetic for modern playgrounds.
What truly made this event special was the interaction with visitors – all of whom enjoyed getting hands-on with our products.
The response was overwhelmingly positive, and it was great to see so much enthusiasm for our varied offerings, from high-energy climbing challenges to inclusive play solutions.
And to top it all off, we were beyond proud to take home the award for Best Outdoor Stand for the second year in a row!
This recognition is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire Wicksteed team, who made this year’s exhibit a standout success.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by to see us at GroundsFest. We’re already looking forward to next year!

Since becoming Course Manager at Kibworth Golf Club in 2019 Martin Anderson has propelled the course to new heights. A crucial component in Martin’s arsenal? The superior quality sand products from Mansfield Sand Company, renowned for their performance and reliability.
For over 170 years, Mansfield Sand Company has led the industry in the development and production of premium silica sand-based products. With a commitment to innovation and quality, Mansfield Sand’s range of offerings has become synonymous with excellence across sports, landscaping, and equestrian sectors. From championship golf courses to world-class show jumping arenas, Mansfield Sand’s products have impressed at some of the most prestigious venues in the UK and Europe.
Reflecting on the transition to Mansfield Sand’s products, Martin speaks of the noticeable difference it has made at Kibworth Golf Club in Leicestershire. “We have changed our sand provider recently,” he explains. “The Mansfield Sand product is a cleaner mixture, which is evident in the soil testing results. It has the potential to significantly improve our playing surfaces.”
Martin’s journey at Kibworth Golf Club is not merely that of a Course Manager, but of a dedicated individual whose roots run deep within the club’s history. “This club holds a special place in my heart,” Martin reflects. “It’s where I took my first ever steps, became an apprentice, learned the ropes of greenkeeping, and is the place where I met my wife.” This profound connection fuels Martin’s passion for excellence, driving him to continually enhance the club’s
playing surfaces with the help of trusted partners like Mansfield Sand Company.
At Kibworth, the application of Mansfield Sand’s top dressing for greens, tees, and approaches has delivered remarkable results. Martin emphasises the role of top dressing in enhancing speed, trueness, and roll through the greens. “It’s not just about aesthetics,” Martin notes. “The top dressing has massively improved playability and drainage, particularly on our heavy clay soil.”
Martin’s praise extends to Mansfield Sand’s bunker sand, essential for maintaining Kibworth’s 52 bunkers. “Our bunkers are well-placed from a playing point of view,” he explains. “Regular top-ups throughout the year, coupled with meticulous
maintenance during the preseason, ensure that our bunkers are always in pristine condition.”
Martin’s successful use of Mansfield Sand products at Kibworth Golf Club is a testament to the power of quality products in course maintenance. As Kibworth continues to thrive under his leadership, it’s clear that the right sand makes all the difference in achieving excellence.
