Smith lights Atelier Aldo in Lugano
5
As happened in 2013 for the project of the Atelier Kingdom of Beauty, Corso Europa 7 Milan, Aldo Coppola have selected once again Catellani & Smith's lighting design for their first flagship store in Lugano. Lighting Specifier
The new ‘kingdom of beauty’ beyond the Alps was conceived from the creativity of Aldo Coppola Jr and to the expertise of the architect Anton Kobrinetz, to express a comprehensive concept of wellness, that includes exclusive treatments for hair and body care. This unique space extends over an area of 300 m2, complemented by a large panoramic terrace, which offers a wonderful view of Lake Lugano to the guests of the Atelier. The most suggestive aspect, though, is represented by the lighting provided by the custom solutions made by Catellani & Smith. Immediately at the Atelier’s entrance, a bespoke ‘Gold Moon’ composition, that looks like a 'waterfall' of discs - covered by hand with gold-colored leaf and illuminated by small LEDs, that are multiplied and
6
reflected by the mirrored surfaces welcomes the guests. Then, going into the salon, the large circular mirrors become the most striking element in each workstation, thanks to the exclusive design of the structure, decorated in the Stchu-Moon style, that embeds them. The irregular surface of these structures is finished in silver colored leaf, to refract and multiply the indirect lighting of the lamp’s LED source, creating a unique and almost futuristic atmosphere. In addition to this, many recessed and semi-recessed lamps of Ametista collection have been installed at the atelier’s ceiling and look like a precious constellation, that lights up the salon with discretion and elegance. www.cavalleri.com

Jacques Cartier
Illumination of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge | Creating the World’s Most Connected Bridge Lighting Specifier
An iconic architectural feature of the Montreal skyline by day, the Jacques Cartier Bridge now shines with an innovative lighting signature that celebrates the unique engineering of its historic structure. Thanks to intelligent programming connected in real-time to big data and social media networks, this bridge is by most measures the most connected bridge in the world. It comes alive every night and changes constantly, in synch with Montreal’s seasons, weather, traffic and social media activity.
•
•
•
A flagship project for the city’s 375th and Canada’s 150th anniversaries, the illumination of this steel colossus was a major challenge.
12
This project unites the bridge with the city and its citizens, by combining expertise in civil engineering and large-scale project management with the creative talent of Moment Factory and six world-class local design firms.
•
About the project • Lighting directed to four areas of the bridge’s steel superstructure: piers, turrets, interior core or “heart”, and exterior facade or “skin”.
•
• •
A soft lighting is directed inwards towards the ‘heart’ of the structure, minimizing light loss and distractions to vehicles. A dynamic lighting of the exterior ‘skin’ is directed outwards towards the surrounding metropolis Art concept created by Moment Factory in collaboration with six Montreal multimedia and lighting studios: Ambiances Design Productions, ATOMIC3, Éclairage Public / Ombrages, Lucion Média, Réalisations and UDO Design. Project management by The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated. Engineering work done by the consortium WSP–AECOM. Lighting system installation by Pomerleau. Lighting technology by Lumenpulse and Philips Lighting
THE CONCEPT - LIVING CONNECTIONS From sunset to sunrise An iconic landmark by day, the bridge takes on a new life at night. As the sun sets, the bridge awakens, bringing light, movement and data to the structure. Over the course of the night, the bridge uses these features to tell the evolving story of Montreal and its ongoing rhythms. The following morning, as the day breaks, the bridge’s pulse fades into the sunlight, waiting for its next turn to shine. A real-time reflection of Montreal's social media energy The energy of Montreal is represented through a subtle play of light on the bridge’s exterior ‘skin’. For 52 minutes each hour, the bridge pulses with the city’s social conversations as tracked on Twitter in real-time. The intensity, speed and density of these light fragments changes depending on how often Montreal-related hashtags are liked and shared.
Viewers create a unique coloured spark by sending a Tweet directly to the bridge’s own dedicated hashtag #illuminationMTL. Hourly show On every hour, at night, short 8-minute animations create a Big Data-driven show that visually translates Montreal’s activity and mood based on different types of daily data: the weather, traffic, news, major events, and more. This changing content makes the bridge a true barometer of Montreal life. As the seasons change, so does the light. The bridge changes hue with the seasons thanks to a 365-colour calendar. Day after day, the bridge’s ‘heart’ gradually changes from an energizing spring green to a radiant summer orange, a voluptuous fall red, and finally an icy winter blue. Like the forested mountain after which the city is named, the colours change gently with the seasons, the light subtly evokes the passage of time as an enduring artistic expression that reflects its surrounding ecosystem.
•
600 METERS LONG + 15,650 TONNES OF STEEL: a true iron giant, the bridge’s superstructure definitely pulls its weight!
•
2x LARGER : THE EIFFEL TOWER is 300 meters in height & contains 7300 tonnes of steel.
•
OVER 250 PARTICIPANTS from all professional backgrounds worked on the bridge’s lighting for over two years (creatives, engineers, lighting designers, project managers, programmers, rope access technicians, steelworkers, electricians, traffic officers, and more).
•
10 YEARS: of operation and maintenance were secured in the illumination project budget.
•
SENSORS : Sensors installed on the bridge track vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic, as well as wind speed, wind direction and precipitation levels.
•
53 BIG DATA POINTS classed into 11 CATEGORIES are consolidated into each hourly show
•
UP TO 500 LIGHT POINTS, representing the most recent and most-liked TWEETS, circulate simultaneously on the bridge’s skin.
•
2,807 LIGHTS: a combination of projectors and tube lighting illuminates the steel superstructure to reflect the activity of the city.
•
50,000 HOURS: estimated minimum lifespan of the energy efficient LED lighting technology.
•
10.4 KM: length of cabling needed to illuminate the bridge (for data transfer and electrical power).
•
10,000 MOUNTING SYSTEMS: to secure the lighting fixtures to the steel supports on the bridge (about 5 per light).
Lighting Specifier
Key facts • 87 YEARS : the Jacques Cartier Bridge has been a Montreal icon for close to a century, a jewel of civic heritage, and a source of pride for Montrealers since its inauguration in 1930.
13
Lighting Specifier Real-time interactive mode with social media • 52 MINUTES each hour. • ALL TWITTER USERS can interact directly with the Jacques Cartier Bridge, causing a point of light to appear from one of the bridge’s ‘towers’ and move across the bridge’s skin. • 2 REAL-TIME SOCIAL MEDIA feeds are used: Tweets making reference to Montréal (eg. #montreal); and Tweets addressed to bridge-specific hashtags (eg. #illuminationMTL).
14
•
•
2 DISTINCT COLOURS are used to differentiate the Tweets for Montréal from the Tweets for the bridge. UP TO 500 LIGHT POINTS, representing the most recent and most-liked TWEETS, circulate simultaneously on the bridge’s skin, before the oldest and least popular gently fade out.
Unique hourly show, based on big data collected from Montreal • 8 MINUTES each hour With 53 data points in 11 different categories collected every day in real time, the possibilities to mirror Montreal’s energy are infinite.
The bridge translates urban big data collected from sensors over the course of the day and updated every hour, into a series of eye-catching data visualisations. Pulling from a wide variety of data sources, including weather, traffic, news and social media, each hourly show is generated in real-time and is totally unique. The ever-changing content makes the Jacques Cartier Bridge a true barometer of Montreal life. Photo credit: Moment Factory

Let there be light
Switches are the unsung heroes of a building; often thought of as simply a means to spectacular lighting that illuminates exquisite furniture and magnificent architecture.
It all began with an electrician by the name of Albrecht Jung who started producing his patented invention: a 45 degrotation pull switch. His brand soon focused on switches and sockets.
But true luxury takes care of details we don’t notice, and that’s what Jung has been doing for a hundred years.
It wasn’t until 1968 that a new icon was born: a Bauhaus-inspired switch with a maximum switch area of 70 x 70mm, offering a new standard of functionality, design and user comfort. Impressively, the company has managed to remain in the family after all these years, and is now run by the founder’s grandson, Harald Jung.
Based in Sauerland, Germany, Jung is one of the largest German manufacturers of electrical installation devices and systems, offering customised solutions for homes, offices, hotels and commercial spaces. Its switches and control solutions can be found in leading hotels and commercial and cultural spaces around the world, and it has amassed a sizeable collection of innovation and design awards for its efforts.
The legendary LS 990 is now a classic among flat switches. While its timeless form has remained unchanged for half a century, it has taken on plenty of new materials and colours. The Les Couleurs ® Le Corbusier range offers the LS 990 in 63 matte shades.
Jung switches don’t just turn on lights. In its mission to make living more comfortable, its devices include all sorts of functionalities, such as dimming, blind control, air conditioning control, telephone and broadband cable connections, TV and satellite signal connections as well as Smart Home solutions. They’re also versatile: The flush-mounted LS ZERO is known for its easy integration into furniture, brickwork or drywalls. The variety of functions is equally matched by its designs. The LS range alone has borders of differing widths, while the CD range replaces the angular design of the LS with rounded corners. The products are predominantly made of high-quality plastic, glass and metal, but Jung has also recently introduced the LS range in brass, produced by hand and available in different shades. www.jung.de 19
WOKA LAMPS Vienna WOKA LAMPS Vienna is a Vienna-based Manufacturer of Iconic 20th Century Lighting Design. Lovers of iconic lamps from the early 20th century were for decades deprived of the possibility of owning some of the most striking pieces by the wiener Werkstatte and the Bauhaus, which had long fallen out of production. The designers whose work WOKA is licensed to produce read like a who’s who of the Vienna design pantheon. In addition to Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the manufactures has reissued striking table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps, as well as chandelier pieces, by the likes of Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Carl Witzmann.

A collection of very rare antiques of the early 20th century as well as a large collection of chandeliers from the 18th century until the 1960’s is completing the business of the WOKA GALLERY. ACO
ACO lights up historic Bristol development with eye opening installation Lighting Specifier
A re-development in an historic area of Bristol is the latest UK site to feature ACO’s Eyeleds – a combined surface water management and lighting system. Located in the popular Harbourside area of Bristol, just a few doors away from the city’s famed Bristol Hippodrome theatre, the Augustine's Courtyard development is home to 31,000sqft of prime commercial office space. However, as part of a general development of the site in 2017, a series of remedial works were instigated by CBRE to provide a more aesthetic feel to key access points, in keeping with the historic setting. Entry to the development is gained through a passageway which forms part of the 19th century Grade II-listed Dominions House, built in the classic Edwardian baroque style that is so prevalent throughout the city. To remain in keeping with the surroundings, the project’s architects The Bush Consultancy identified the need for a solution which would provide adequate lighting in a subtle yet atmospheric way. To meet this requirement for a lighting solution, and minimise the need for any further street furniture, the Architects specified ACO Water Management’s Eyeleds system. The Eyeleds water management system comprises of a 1m drainage channel fitted with two 500mm gratings, each embedded with a high-performance LED.
22
Available in blue or white, the LEDs are sealed against water ingress, and have a working life of 100,000 hours. Up to 40 ACO Eyeled lights can be connected together and powered by a single 12V transformer. Due to the site’s proximity to Bristol’s Harbourside complex, Augustine's Courtyard is often used by the public as a shortcut to access the number of bars and restaurants located in the vicinity. Given the high evening footfall, the extra lighting provided by the Eyeleds channels ensures that the public can feel safe when walking through the area at night. ACO’s Eyeleds water management system is easy to install, and is available with Heelguard™ gratings to reduce the risks of shoes getting caught or damaged. As such, it is suitable for use in pedestrian and light vehicle applications. The product is also available for use on domestic sites, to add an extra aesthetic edge to driveway and patio projects. The channel is manufactured from high-strength black polypropylene, meaning it is robust yet lightweight material. A range of cable splitters, extension cables and drainage accessories is also available. For more information on ACO’s Eyeleds system, please visit: www.ACO.co.uk.
“
Lighting Specifier
Sam Hawkins, Regional Sales Manager for ACO Water Management, commented: “Given the location of the Augustine's Courtyard development, the Architects were keen to ensure that any remedial work to the area did not detract from the location’s aesthetics. With a view to creating an atmospheric – yet safe – environment within the courtyard, especially of an evening, they chose to specify the ACO Eyeleds system. This provided the dual function of delivering discreet yet modern floor lighting, while still providing an effective surface water management system for times of heavy rainfall.

The project was commissioned for the Gao family hotels in Ordos, Inner Mongolia and Beijing. Currently the light is being adapted so that the inner surface of the 3d printed net is coated with copper. This will strengthen the magnetic field causing to induce a higher and more constant electric current that lights the LED. The LED will light brighter whilst charging the battery as it is used. Also in consideration is the application of a piezoelectric zinc element to produce a current strong enough to light a 9V LED. Investigations in the field of semi-conductors contribute to affordable, sustainable lighting for the future, a quest for free energy. About Margot Krasojevic Margot Krasojević has been developing a dialogue between architectural form, geometry, sustainability and smart materials as an inherent part of the design process, dictating the terms of the architectural design criteria rather than referring to sustainable technology as a polite afterthought.

Seismic Electromagnetic Induction LED
This net is designed to give the illusion of intensifying the emitted light due to the dome shape which channels the light around the surface of the semi-transparent geometry.
Lighting Specifier
The LED light consists of a 3d printed net whose recycled polymer geometry is elastic yet strong enough to stretch and reform when subjected to tremors and shifting changes in it's immediate environment.
When charged the LED is a bright 60 Candela white light visible for 3 metres in a dark room. A main structural thread pipe is at the core of the LED, this can be inserted into the ground for stability, the threaded pipe holds a series of magnets and a copper coil used to induce an electrical current. The 3d printed net resonates and amplifies kinetic energy transforming it into electrical current lighting the series of LED'S embedded within the geometry, all reverberations within the vicinity of the light induce a current by moving the magnets through the copper coil placed within the main structural thread pipe, the principle behind this is electromagnetic induction. The net's spiral envelope is constructed from a flexible recycled polymer whose geometry intensifies it's displacement moving the magnets inside the supporting thread pipe to create a current which can either be stored or dissipated immediately by lighting the LED. To summarise, the main body of the light acts as a moveable piston intensified by the harmonic oscillating motion of the weighted 3d printed net as it stretches and expands.

Aura Light
Energy Saving At Manufacturing Company With Aura Led Lighting Rental Scheme Lighting Specifier
Swedish lighting experts, Aura Light, has been involved in a new warehouse LED lighting scheme at Celsa Manufacturing UK in Neath, South Wales. Celsa UK is the largest producer of steel reinforcement in the UK and is one of the biggest manufacturers of other steel long products. They produce and deliver 1.2million tonnes of finished products every year, mainly to the UK and Irish markets. Aura Light worked with Celsa UK to install 316 light fittings throughout its site as part of its energy reduction programme. These were the Aura Duro 23W, Aura PerseaLED 135W and Apus Pro LED 45W. Mike Perry, Group Finance Manager at Celsa UK said, “This was the first time I had heard of renting lighting; so I was a little hesitant at first. However, having sat down with Simon Taylor of Aura Light, he assured us it was a straightforward process. I must say that from the first meeting to a multisite rollout, the whole process and the way that Aura handled the install was fantastic.
36
The Aura PerseaLED and Aura Duro have been designed to significantly improve lighting and reduce energy costs of industrial applications. The two luminaires are a popular choice for Aura Light’s ‘Lighting as a Managed Service’ scheme, which provides businesses with a flexible funding option to upgrade their lighting schemes. The overall schemes will save end users a significant amount of money in energy, installation and maintenance costs. Aura Light introduced the PerseaLED as a modern, energy efficient replacement for 400W high pressure sodium and metal halide high-bay luminaires, using a MIRO 4 silver reflector for ultimate light efficiency. The luminaire is available from 122W to 217W, depending on the light source chosen, with an efficacy of up to 141 lumens per circuit watt. Suitable for applications in warehouses, cold storage and supermarkets, the Aura PerseaLED offers two beam angle options for both wide and narrow light distribution, which can easily be altered if the arrangement of the environment is changed. The luminaire can also be equipped with an integrated PIR sensor for installation heights of up to 15m, to ensure light is only used when necessary.
The Aura Duro is another of the company’s products suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. Sealed inside a sturdy polycarbonate casing with a unique gasket-less labyrinth seal, the Aura Duro luminaire is IP66 rated making it completely “dust tight” and protected against powerful jets of water. Depending on the light source chosen, the Aura Duro comes with a transparent or white casing and uses a narrow beam MIRO-reflector for the highest efficiency of light. The Aura Duro can be specified in many outputs ranging from 28W to 100W to significantly reduce the energy used within a scheme. The efficacy of the luminaire is as much as 102 lumens per circuit watt offering a high luminous flux. The luminaire can be installed with a DALI dimmable driver to control the light usage to add to the energy savings already generated from the installation. The Apus Pro LED is a low profile ceiling module and display LED solution. The module is used as lighting for standard commercial ceiling grids and is typically used to replace 600mm x 600mm luminaires. The efficient Apus Pro LED panel light is the best solution for commercial applications. The panel is available with either Tridonic or Helvar drivers. The lighting is of a very high quality, with a colour rendering of more than 80 and an initial chromaticity tolerance of a maximum 5 SDCM. The panel is energy efficient, has no UV radiation, is lightweight, has over-temperature protection and is shallow, making it suitable for low depth ceilings. It also comes with a five-year warranty.

Felipe Barros, Celsa UK’s Project Coordinator added, “I met with Simon Taylor from Aura Light, and he explained the concept of ‘Lighting as a Managed Service’. This solution allowed us to complete a multiple site rollout programme quickly and efficiently to maximize the energy savings within the company. Without this option, this would have taken us some years to complete. Excellent products and service!”

Background Working alongside the architect to design and develop a unique lighting solution. Foyer lights first welcome guests to your building and set the tone of first impressions. Our solution to develop our MaxiLED Large Globe series to be powered and controlled over a track system gave us the flexability to create different depths of light which enhanced the scale of the space. This was further enhanced by the use of a reflective material choosen for the upper interior surface. 38
Design Maxiled lighting have developed this range into a unique patent pending easy installation system for low power DMX projects over any two wires 1.5 or 2.5sqmm cable. The DMX install is simply the same wiring as a static install. This project is unique, it uses 3 phase track and adaptors with 1 phase removed, the DMX is running on the back of the power through the track and tells each individual light point what to do. All drivers and control can be housed 75metres away from the lighting. Simple, clean and unique especially for any installer that is not experienced in DMX installs.

Adria
ADRIA Lighting Specifier
The contemporary alternative to a chandelier, reinvented with a fresh, dynamic approach, which is the distinguishing feature of NAVA+NAVA designers. This is the idea behind Adria, a thread that connects the past to the future, as the name itself implies. Adria is the origin of the name of the Adriatic Sea, a body of water that has played a key role in human evolution and fosters the exchange of cultures and goods. While the most characteristic elements of chandeliers – the central stem and bobeches – have been maintained, they have been redesigned in a play of balances to create a bold effect. Adria is a “destructured” suspension light that stunningly combines transparent glass shades with slender, minimalistic and unobtrusive supports. Paolo Emanuele Nava and Luca Maria Arosio of NAVA+NAVA Design Studio explained, “In this way, the concept of the classic chandelier was turned over and simplified – the central stem is counterbalanced with bobeches supported not from below with arms, but suspended from above with supports inspired by
40
modern architecture in a play of harmonious contrasts of modern and classic elements”. It features luminous drops suspended in mid-air, an entwining of delicate yet bold “strings”, disconnected elements that take shape in a skilfully ordered combination of innovation and classic atmospheres. The light emitted from the glass does not lose that exquisite, romantic allure that distinguishes this material, worked with undisputed mastery by Italamp. Adria seeks to continue the company’s great tradition in the world of chandeliers, while also opening new avenues where tradition meets innovation, thanks to both design and technology. A versatile product, it can meet the diverse needs of architects, designers and final users, offering design ideas and special details that are well-suited to settings ranging from residential to contract. www.italamp.com

Lighting Specifier Lighting schemes are generally designed around a few key aspects, ambiance, task, feature, glare, intensity, direction, control in many instances this is a function of the light source and there are any number of lamps available to you. However when selecting the luminaire to carry the lamp of your choice you should be aware that not all luminaires are created equal and you should be considering other factors •
•
42
Identity do the bathroom downlights look like all the other downlights in the installation? Often IP65, fire rated, emergency and standard downlights will have different appearance. Survivability will the fitting survive a lamp change, can you change the lamp at all? An increasing trend is
to integrate the lamp into the fitting reducing the lamp choices available to you. •
Impact does the ceiling have acne? Serried ranks of down lights look awful?
•
Durability will time change the colour of the fitting? Will springs fail over time? We have all seen downlight that are slightly askew following a lamp change because of the downlights poor/cheap construction.
•
•
Reliability does the fitting have an independent test certificate? If not! why not the onus is on you to select reliable tested products. Invisibility can you hide an unwanted lighting position? can you paint fitting to match the ceiling? Changes in a
room can often lead to unwanted luinaires can you blank them out? •
Maintainability does a lamp change involve employing tradesmen? Even the best LED lamps fail eventually can your client change the lamp? The worst cases involve an electrician, plasterer and decorator and a simple end of life lamp failure can incur considerable costs.
•
Flexibility can the fitting be morphed into something else? Can you change a downlight to a pendent or a spotlight or PIR sensor?
Of course with Levello you can do all of the above and more contact us at sales@levello.net see us on twitter or call us on 01462768220

Newlec ‘Switched On’ To New Led Dimmers Following increased demand for LED lighting solutions, Newlec from Rexel has launched a brand new range of LED grid switch dimmers. With light emitting diode (LED) technology being the energy efficient choice to refurbish existing lighting in both commercial and consumer environments, electrical contractors are being increasingly called upon to specify interconnected wiring accessories, such as LED dimmer switches, which can effectively integrate with the LED light source. Yet, despite LEDs being inherently dimmable, the industry has experienced challenges with the compatibility of some early generations of LED lamps with conventional dimmers. Not only did connections prove complex but they also impacted on the long-term performance and reliability of LEDs. Kevin Norman, Senior Product manager at Rexel, explains: “There’s no denying the LED market has, and will continue to, experience huge growth. However, wiring accessories, including dimmer switches, initially struggled to keep up with the pace of LED installations. Electricians and electrical contractors often experienced challenging installations as a result of trying to align new LED lighting solutions with incompatible control systems, which had the potential to result in reliability problems further down the line.”
46
The latest addition to the Newlec range of grid switch dimmers, has been specifically designed to provide electrical contractors with an LED dimming compatible solution that features variable minimum level pre-set to adjust low level output and stabilise the load. The range offers an easy-fit installation, and comes with nine grid adaptors, also suitable for Euro grid plates, enabling contractors to provide end users with reliable products that generate immediate reductions in lighting energy use, and subsequently, costs. Kevin Norman concludes: “In order to deliver an outstanding solution, we have carried out extensive research, looking at the current trends within the lighting market, and more importantly recent advancements in order to offer our range of Newlec LED grid dimmers. Delivering a well-designed and stable dimming interface which is critical for consistent light quality and to achieve the reliability needed for domestic and commercial applications.” The Newlec range of LED grid dimmer switches are available in both white and black finishes.
