lends itself to a continuous narrative
The architects have implemented a bold planting strategy that helps define these urban spaces in a way that evokes common perceptions and expectations of parks. Large trees differentiate spaces, direct views, and provide shelter and enclosure. This structure is reinforced by planting of a smaller scale that has sufficient variety provide many different experiential characteristics throughout the park, creating an unfolding experience of the park, full of discovery and delight. Patel Taylor’s scheme is inherently sustainable; the practice has transformed a city- centre brownfield site, with previous light industrial and commercial uses to a public park. The park is well served by public transport, and its structure provides clear pedestrian links to the city centre, and accommodates cycle routes and numerous cycle racks, reducing reliance on cars. The park has been designed to last, using high quality, hard warring materials. This provides a benchmark for quality within Eastside, and minimises the potential future carbon and financial costs of repair and replacement. Throughout the design process, there has been close consultation with local communities; stakeholders developing within the Eastside quarter, such as Birmingham City University; and those who will be responsible for the maintenance of the park. Parks are long-term investments that need to meet and exceed the needs of users, and must continue to do many years after completion. Wendy Kirton, Chair of Fundraising for East Wichel Primary, said: “Most of the rainwater from the school field seemed to end up near the pond, meaning it was inaccessible and unsafe for the children to use. “As I have a LazyLawn in my garden at home, I approached the local licensee, Lee Giles who kindly donated the turf for us. “The children absolutely love the new wildlife pond and they are currently working on a bug hotel as their next project. We would definitely recommend LazyLawn to other schools because it’s practical and low-maintenance.” Landscape & Urban Design Issue 17

The TurfTeq Power Rake – Best Kept Secret In The Landscape Industry TurfTeq’s Surface Preparation Rake offers the quickest and most profitable way to prepare soil for turf, grass seed or wild flowers. Much quicker than a rotavator, it also facilitates stone removal and rough-grades the site. First, angle the deck left or right to work the stones into windrows for easy collection. Whilst doing this, the Rake is already starting to produce a fine tilth and grade the site. Next, pivot the head straight and work it across the area in different directions in order to complete the job. You now have a level, rough-raked site ready to accept turf. If you are seeding, finish off with the machine running in reverse and you will be left with just castor marks to touch in with a hand rake. It tills only the top layer (3 to 25mm), so the soil is immediately ready for use.
12
You don’t have to re-consolidate the ground or break up lumps of soil, as you would if you used a rotavator, and it will not slump when the first serious fall of rain comes along. To replace an existing lawn without lifting the old turf, kill off the grass with a suitable chemical. The Rake will quickly rip out the dead grass, working up a tilth as it does so, and the site is ready, leaving only a few bags of dead grass to dispose of. This feature can also be used for heavy scarification, such as preparation for a wild flower meadow. Re-levelling gravelled areas is a back-breaking job at the best of times. The real hard work is breaking up solidified surfaces such as self-binding gravel paths, golf buggy paths and similar; that’s where the Rake comes in.
Telephone: 0118 981 1313
Landscape & Urban Design Issue 17
Adjust the raking depth to suit the thickness of the gravel layer and run the machine over the surface. It will soon break up the top layer, rough-grading as it goes and bringing cleaner gravel to the surface. The final touches can then be applied with a hand rake. Homefarm SPARK unveils Homefarm – a concept for the next generation of retirement housing – at today’s Retirement Living World China 2014 conference in Shanghai. The bold conceptual project proposes the combination of apartments and facilities for seniors with vertical urba farming. SPARK’s aim is to generate discussion about the many potentials that can emerg from the mixing of two typically separate realms. The question of how to support and accommodate a rapidly ageing population confronts man nations in Asia. In Singapore, for example, a substantial demographic shift is underway. By 2030, one in five Singapore residents will be aged 65 years and over (up from 6 per cent in 1990). The swelling proportion of seniors will place significant demands on social, economic and infrastructural systems. Achieving a secure food supply for growing city populations is an equally pressing challenge for rapidly urbanising Asian nations. This challenge is keenly felt in Singapore, a small and fully urbanised city state without a hinterland. Currently, Singapore imports over 90 per cent of its food, and has in place strategies for the diversification of food sources and the boosting of local production through intensive agricultural technology.

Linking the old with the new Pavers from Wienerberger specified for phase two of Rathbone redevelopment Project: Rathbone Market Plot 2: Aurelia Client: English Cities Fund (ECF) Project size: 2,800m2 Product: Wienerberger’s Incana WF & Toledo Waterstruck WF Architect: Churchman Landscape Architects Contractor: John Sisk and Son
The second phase of a substantial redevelopment project in East London has recently come to a close following an investment of some £25m. Aurelia, the name given to the second phase of the redevelopment, has seen Rathbone Market – a project developed by English Cities Fund (ECF) - a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal and General Property and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) - modernised, bringing new, purpose-built facilities for market traders within the Thames Gateway. As part of the redevelopment, a team from Churchman Landscape Architects was tasked with providing the bulk of the public realm landscape, linking phase one with phase two and the future phase three, which is now in development. A core consideration, within the landscaping brief, was to improve the connectivity between the transport interchange at Canning Town, the newly developed market square, residential developments south of the A13 and the local town centre on Barking Road. To assist in meeting the brief, the design team specified Wienerberger clay pavers in both Incana and Toledo Waterstruck colours via Hardscape – The landscaping materials supplier. The pavers, which have been set in a herringbone arrangement, provide an interesting juxtaposition between the paved area and the vertical exteriors of some of the surrounding residential facilities. This is caused by the soft, yet varied, tones found within the pavers, which span soft, burnt oranges through to almost black, via various soft shades of red contrasting with the more vivid yellows and bright oranges found on the aforementioned flats. 22 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 17
What’s more the project brief had additional design criteria including the retention of two mature London plane trees. These large deciduous trees required detailed specialist paving design and close cooperation with arboriculture specialists and the contractor. Chris Arrowsmith, from Churchman Landscape Architects Limited, commented: “We feel that the project succeeds in feeling relatable on a human scale. The grand proportions of the open space, the blocks of the building, and the large existing trees are moderated at street level by a paving design that feels warm and tactile whilst grounding the building and anchoring the space in the everyday bustle of the market. “We’ve also been very happy with the specified pavers. The durability and flexibility of the clay product, as proven over generations in the Netherlands, was a selling point over modern concrete - with the ability to resist the chaotic street market environment. The natural palette and unusual (for this country at least) sizes available also assisted in us achieving our objectives. Tactile and characterful – we wanted to tie this large regeneration project back to the human scale at ground level.” For further information please visit http://www.wienerberger.co.uk/. Adrian Gray Stonebalancing Stunning sculptures for any setting – as seen on BBC1’s The One Show Adrian’s latest work, ‘Trust in Nature’, pictured with RHS Rosemoor events co-ordinator Sally Smith at Rosemoor’s winter sculpture exhibition
Adrian Gray has been a stonebalancing artist for more than a decade – and his sculptures just keep getting bigger! His latest – and largest – piece (pictured left) is nearly five metres tall and is currently on display at RHS Rosemoor’s winter sculpture exhibition. It’s made of gorgeous Bodmin granite, initially balanced on the moor in a long, tense and precise process that was filmed for The One Show on BBC1. Adrian then moved it to Rosemoor and fixed it in place for safety and longevity. A stonebalancing sculpture makes a stunning addition to virtually any outdoor space. If a giant balance isn’t right for your project, Adrian creates smaller pieces (from about a metre in height) and even some mini-balances suitable for indoor use. All sculptures are fixed securely in place and come with a film of the balancing process. Adrian may even be able to work with your existing rock, as he did for a client whose self-build (pictured top) appeared on Channel 4’s Grand Designs. Contact Adrian for more information.

Cornish Landscaping Granite We are specialist suppliers of glaciated and weathered Cornish surface granite boulders to all sectors of the landscaping industry. We were thrilled to work with Adrian Gray on his latest sculpture, ‘Trust in Nature’. We work closely with architects and designers to use the beautiful stones of Bodmin to make a strong, pleasing statement; the rocks’ sculptural qualities bring a sense of permanence in our fast-changing world. As well as standing stones and sculptural pieces in their own right, they can also be used as plinths for other artworks, indestructible seating and even obstacles and challenging climbing walls in play spaces. We invite clients to visit our farms to hand-pick individual boulders to match their specifications. We are experienced in the safe, careful placing of stones on site, from small internal courtyards to open parkland features.

26 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 17
It was these factors which led chartered landscape architects, Influence Environment Ltd, based in Fareham, Hampshire, to Brett Landscaping after extensive research. Landscape architect, Suzie Leiber, explains, “Our brief was to improve the external space for the
future events at the yacht club. After consultations with yacht club members on the different design options from fluid to more formal, it was decided to go with the final scheme resulting the simple, contemporary terrace which addresses the relationships with the Hamble Conservation Area. “After researching various suppliers, we decided to work with Brett. They have been extremely east to work with and their product knowledge is second to none. The location required sustainable materials, robust enough for the coastal environment whilst providing aesthetic value.
Brett also provided us with product samples, allowing us to see how the different style of paving would work in situ. We decided to use the newly launched Lugano due to its simple elegance, naturalistic feel, and choice of colours, which allowed us to distinguish between the terrace and the walkways.” The Lugano flag paving range helped to create the required modern, elegant, and clean space around the yacht club. With a high level of slip resistance, helping to keep visitors safe, as well as exceptional durability, Lugano also met the functional requirements in an area with a high level of pedestrian traffic. Over the 600m² area a combination of both Silver Grey and Graphite Grey Lugano paving has been used. The light Silver Grey is the predominant colour covering the majority of the area producing a light and spacious feel, whilst the darker Graphite Grey has been used to denote walkways as well as creating a striking contrast to the rest of the terrace. The installation was completed by Hampshire-based Raymond Brown Construction, who confirmed: “The paving solution provided by Brett Landscaping was the best choice for this project, both for its appealing aesthetics but also for its robustness and anti-slip properties which are both imperative in an environment such as this.” Landscape & Urban Design Issue 17

The Clever Choice For Smart Construction Professionals
Designing better ways to make a more beautiful, more functional built environment.
AG, formerly known as Acheson & Glover, has been pioneering cleverly cast concrete products’ ideas for more than half a century.
Hard landscaping, structural precast and building products forged from over 50 years of ingenuity.
From its formative years servicing customers just a few miles away from its first quarry, AG has grown to become a leading name in the concrete products sector throughout the UK and Ireland. With an annual turnover in the region of £40m, the business employs around 400 people across eight locations including a dedicated office in Birmingham. According to Managing Director, Stephen Acheson AG’s refreshing approach to customer service combined with an incessant appetite for innovation have been vital ingredients in his company’s continued success. “We’ve been using clever thinking to provide smart paving, walling and structural precast solutions for more than 50 years. In the 1980s we introduced top-mix block paving. In the 90s, working in partnership with Anchor, we brought specialist Segmental retaining walls to the UK whilst in the 2000s we developed leading-edge polished flag stones, coated pressed facing bricks and acoustic masonry. More recently in conjunction with RINN we launched the UK’s largest format paving product which we have called Magnum.” IMAGE: RInn AG

The park on the bridge is in line with the views, but also with greenery along the Dommel River and the recreational area around the Hofvijver in Paleiskwartier. By turning the bridge into a park-like area, more than 2,500 m2 of park has been added to the centre of ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Plants and shrubs The positions of the flower beds and tree containers on the bridge were determined in collaboration with Piet Oudolf, who prepared the planting scheme for the Paleisbrug. The plants and shrubs on the bridge are divided into three zones, each with their own character. On the side of the city centre, the bridge will have low, savannah-like plants and individual trees. Where the bridge crosses the railway track, there will only be low plants, in line with the extensive views.

Solar collector In order to be able to keep the bridge free from ice during the winter, floor heating with a low temperature was a departure point in the design. Road salt is not an option, as it would kill the plants and affect the material. That is why Benthem Crouwel looked for a sustainable solution for the use of floor heating. The answer is to have the Paleisbrug act as a giant solar collector during the summer.
The spans comprise of horizontal weatherproof steel ducts covered a concrete compression layer. The longer the span, the higher the ducts. The largest span, measuring 60 metres in length, runs across the railway track. For this span, an additional trussed joint has been created on top of the bridge deck. Strips, sixty centimetres wide and finished with a weather- proof steel studded sheet, run between the flower beds and paving. This where the cables, pipes and gutters for the rain water discharge from the street can be found. The setup of the bridge deck and pipework can be replaced, if necessary, without affective the main supporting structure.

Co- Ordinated External Furniture For The University Of Birmingham The University of Birmingham is in the midst of one of the most exciting and transformational campus redevelopments since its original completion in 1909. The current development, costing close to £500 million over a five-year period, is creating outstanding new facilities, benefitting students, staff, visitors and the local community. Part of this transformation is the landscaping of a rooftop courtyard located between the historic Aston Webb Great Hall and C block, which had been left neglected for many years. The client’s objective was to create an informal landscaped area with planters that could accommodate small trees and seating grouped around tables, where students and staff could gather. With this in mind, elements from our Campus range were brought together in several combinations to achieve a relaxed and social area.
The large planters are produced in 6061 aluminium with a simple return edge and plinth style base. The matching benches are framed in the same aluminium with iroko FSC-approved timber slats. The modular design of the Campus range gives the client/ architect the flexibility to select and configure elements for specific landscape solutions or simply use as stand-alone items. Campus communal tables provide a large surface area to congregate around, with four legs providing a stable platform. As with the benches, Campus tables can be manufactured to any size to fit specific needs. The Campus range has been designed with the educational sector in mind, but its great flexibility and modern style makes it a ideal choice for many environments. www.benchmark-ltd.co.uk

Water safety was the key reason for the development of the Biesbosch Museum Island. As part of a national water safety programme, the 4450-hectare Noordwaard polder has been turned into a waterretention area. Outlets on either side of the Biesbosch Museum were dug to create a new island.
numbers. A lack of adequate catering facilities was particularly urgent. Moreover, the presentation of the collection needed an overhaul. In 2012, some 35,000 people visited the museum, while in the first three months since the reopening, no fewer than 30,000 people visited the complex!
Museum Building To avoid any unnecessary waste of material or energy, the hexagonal structure of the original Biesbosch Museum pavilions has been retained, and a new 1000 m2 wing was added on the south-western side of the building. Featuring extensive areas of fenestration, the wing opens to the museum garden on the island. The extension houses an organic restaurant that offers views of the adjacent water and landscape, and space for temporary exhibitions. The existing building houses the permanent exhibition, library, multipurpose theatre, entrance area with reception and museum shop. Visitors can obtain tourist information about the Biesbosch National Park and buy tickets for the museum and electric boats. The addition of large dormers on the roof created space for the museum’s offices, the Dutch Forestry Commission and the Park Board. Floor Plan The old and new sections of the museum are surrounded by earthworks and covered with a roof of grass and herbs. The roof adds ecological value, creating a sculptural object that reads as land art and, at the same time, manifests itself in the surrounding landscape. A fold in the roof gives way to an adventurous mountain trail and a lookout post. Exhibition The new permanent exhibition offers a rich overview of the history of the Biesbosch, the culture and the collection of the museum. The unique story of the Biesbosch is displayed in seven pavilions, covering its history from the Elizabeth Flood of 1421 to its current status as a recreational area. The residents, economy, crafts and nature are displayed in multimedia spaces that stimulate all senses. Original film material and photographs, interviews and tools present a personal and vivid account of the area and its residents. Energy Both the new wing and existing volume are designed to minimize energy consumption. The glass front is fitted with state-of-theart heat-resistant glass that eliminates the need for blinds. The earthworks on the north-western side and the green roof serve as additional insulation and a heat buffer. On cold days, a biomass stove maintains the building at the right temperature through floor heating. On warm days, water from the river flows through the same piping to cool the building. Willow Filter Sanitary wastewater is purified through a willow filter: the first in the Netherlands and an acknowledgement of the wicker culture of the Biesbosch. Willows absorb the wastewater and the substances it contains, among them nitrogen and phosphate. These substances act as nutrients and help the willow to grow. The purified water is discharged into the adjacent wetland area and flows from there into the river. Once the willows are sawn and dried, the wood can be used as fuel in the biomass stove in the museum or for other purposes. Landscape & Urban Design Issue 17

harvesting and processing natural materials and is bio-based avant la lettre. The museum therefore provides space for art, preferably made of natural materials from the Biesbosch itself, in the new wing and on the island. Section Midway through the last century, the impressive sturgeon and salmon disappeared from the waters of the Biesbosch. With the opening of the Haringvliet locks and the cleaner water in the river, the likelihood of a return of these distinctive species has increased.
The 'Biesbosch Experience' will be realized on the Museum Island in the spring of 2016. This scale model of the Biesbosch, with polders, dikes and streams, explains the water management function and importance of the area when water levels are high. Within a half-hour cycle, the water changes from ‘extremely low’ to ‘extremely high’. Children and adults are able to alter the course of the water by operating various kinds of locks. Canopies come in all different shapes and sizes, and no two are the same.
Retractable canopies and terrace covers are a great way to create additional outside space without the expense and cost of an extension. Free-standing garden rooms with retractable roofs bring Italian flair to restaurant terraces or even the English garden. All terrace covers have the ability to be fully enclosed if required. Walkway canopies can be used to link two buildings together or to lead up to the entrance where you can use a stunning canopy to make an impact.

Hull Gets Fit And Lights Up With Green Energy Gym Two proud Made in Britain members have joined the campaign to 'fight the flab' in one of the most deprived and obese cities in the country. The Great Outdoor Gym Company (TGO) from Kent has been working with Hull City Council since the London 2012 Games in the city's attempts to deliver its own Olympic legacy.
provider for the London Olympics, in enclosing the latest Hull project at Barbara Robson Park in Sutton Village. Kingston upon Hull East MP Karl Turner (pictured) officially opened the Barbara Robson Green Gym, where the effort made by gym users is converted into electricity that is used to power the lights in the park, the adjacent floodlit multi-use games area
TGO has installed eight freeto-use outdoor gyms in Hull that are readily accessible to people of all ages and abilities, breaking down the barriers to physical activity and acting as a gateway to improving health. One of them, Shaw Park Eco Gym, is powered entirely by human movement and is lit up at night at no cost allowing people to exercise around the clock, attracting official visits from as far afield as Japan and Hungary – and being voted second best outdoor gym in the world after California's muscle beach. Now TGO has engaged Made in Britain founding company Zaun, which was the main perimeter and security fencing

while Zaun has installed a free standing basketball unit at the MUGA that is ringed with Duo8 panels and attractive BowTop fencing around the outdoor gym. TGO founder and MD Matt Delaney, ex London Director of Sport England, PE teacher and professional basketball player, wanted to help communities get more active by offering high quality training facilities in every community. He said: “Hull has been a brilliant pioneering partner for us in championing our green energy gyms. We have a real opportunity to transform local parks and playing fields into health and wellbeing spaces for the whole community and tackle health issues from the angle of prevention rather than cure.”

Sutton Ward councillors funded the gym while NHS North Yorkshire and Humber Commissioning Support Unit has employed a fitness instructor to advise and run programmes to encourage people to start to lead a healthier lifestyle.

A SuDS Journey - from Unholy Marriage to Urban Oasis Relationships work best whenever the partners work on an equal footing, with each understanding and complementing the strengths, expertise and remit of the other. The recent Australia Road SuDS Park in London exemplifies this integrated design approach to deliver a successful green and social community ‘oasis’ that protects against flooding. Design and Engineering in Tandem. Most schemes employ the services of Landscape Architect and Civil Engineer but there is usually very little in the way of collaborative working between the two, with each carrying out their respective tasks in isolation. In other words they form a bit of an unholy marriage as numerous opportunities are not realised in what could have been integrated design of the landscape to manage surface runoff. We are surrounded by numerous examples where the landscape does not form any significant function and where drainage is via underground pipes that can quickly become surcharged by runoff. If both Architect and Engineer work in unison the benefits of more flood resilient landscapes that offer improved functionality and attractive surroundings for the community, all at reduced construction cost, are easily attainable. A recent example of this type of joined up thinking is the delivery of the Australia
64
Landscape & Urban Design Issue 17
Road scheme in the White City area of northwest London. Whilst the initial focus of the scheme was urban regeneration, the client quickly realised that redevelopment was an ideal opportunity to introduce SuDS as part of an integrated landscape within the Borough. In this way SuDS can be viewed as an asset to enhance the character of the landscape rather than storing runoff out of sight in an underground tank. Community-led Project. The notion that water has a valid place in the landscape (even in densely populated areas of London) was emphaised at the first stakeholders meeting. The head of the residents committee outlined his vision for the scheme as “the creation of an ‘urban oasis’” which would draw people in and create a social hub for the local community.
Interestingly, health and safety in relation to open water regardless how temporary or shallow, was not raised as a key concern. Designing for the ‘Host Community’. With the mission statement enshrined, the designers set about creating a space that tells the story of water in the landscape by mimicking drainage in the natural catchment. The space was designed by Robert Bray Associates to be shared and enjoyed by users of the adjacent school and playgrounds as well as the wider community. This was a fundamental design driver as the scheme lies between the school and playgrounds at the heart of the White City estate. This presented the opportunity for the redevelopment to become a social catalyst by providing much-needed social and events space whilst delivering much wider benefits by using the landscape for climate change adaptation, improving flood resilience and reducing the impact on the receiving sewer and wider environment.
Usable SuDS Features.
Innovative Engineering Approaches.
At the heart of the design are a range multi-functional SuDS features including planted basins, raingardens and rainsculptures. The majority of resurfacing was completed with permeable paving, which captures the rainfall and directs it immediately below the surface of the pavement to two planted basins. Significant onsite constraints were present such as high voltage power cables and concrete slabs that formed the substructure of the existing roadway.
McCloy Consulting, the project Engineers, adopted an innovate approach for the permeable pavement design to reduce costs and minimise requirements to dig out existing concrete with permeable pavement being formed directly onto the slab no more than 200mm deep. This enabled the main basins to be designed by Robert Bray Associated as shallow features that sit comfortably within the landscape. The flow controls restrict flows to below 1 litre per second. This is a different
“It’s wonderful – it has actually started to bring the community together!”
approach to that which would normally be applied and it provides greater benefit to the receiving sewer, reducing CSO spills, risk of urban flooding and significantly exceeding normal compliance requirements without any additional cost to the client. Success. This innovative project was completed in September 2015 and showcases an exemplar of how SuDS can be successfully integrated as part of the landscape of our towns and cities.
Source control SUDS secures clean future for retail-park. Following a review by the Regulating Authorities, developers at Cribbs Causeway Retail Park on the outskirts of Bristol have turned to Stormwater Management’s D-Rainclean™ bio-remediation drainage channel to prevent contaminated surface water run-off generated by a heavily trafficked car park from polluting the nearby River Trym - a delicate ecosystem which is home to a wide range of protected fauna. The initial SUDS proposal for the site, which has more than 12million visitors a year, was to use a porous pavement that would collect and pass run-off through an oil interceptor before discharging into the river. With such high volumes of traffic and the associated potential for surface contamination, the regulators and planning authority considered that a more robust and effective sustainable drainage solution was needed to minimise any pollution risk. “The unique filter media within the D-Rainclean channel provided the assured long-term performance the developer
needed to satisfy the regulators,” explains Neill Robinson-Welsh, Technical Sales Manager at Stormwater Management Ltd. “And from the developer’s perspective the new scheme was equally beneficial. It was quicker and more cost effective to install - as it was based on a conventional impermeable asphalt surface - and no interceptor was necessary, eliminating the need for any additional electrical service connections, alarm systems and expensive ongoing maintenance.” In total, 448 metres of D-Rainclean have been installed within the site catchment. Run-off enters the porous channel through a 300mm wide cast iron grating rated for heavy goods vehicle traffic (Load Class D400) where it comes into contact with the filtration media. Passing under gravity through the filter layers hydrocarbons and dissolved heavy metals are removed leaving the clean water to enter the watercourse indirectly through ground infiltration or via a perforated, high strength carrier pipe installed within a gravel soakaway directly below the 470mm deep channel.
“Independent quality tests on treated runoff from the D-Rainclean system at Cribbs Causeway have shown that 90% of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) including below 63microns and over 88% of dissolved heavy metals had been removed - this meets the discharge quality required by the Water Framework Directive and confirms D-Rainclean to be an extremely effective remover of priority pollutants,” says Neill Robinson-Welsh. “The results also predict that the filter media will maintain its performance level in this location for up to twenty years before it needs replacing.” Manufactured from robust polypropylene, each D-Rainclean channel section is 500mm long with an internal baffle wall at its midpoint which allows the system to be laid level or to a fall. Bulkheads at each end ensure dimensional stability and limit pollution spillages to a confined section of the system. Eight 100mm diameter holes in the base of the each section give the channel its porosity, allowing water to pass through to ground.
