GROUND CONTROL’S 100 COMPANY CARS TRANSITION TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Ground Control Ltd, one of the UK’s largest and most successful grounds maintenance, commercial landscaping and external solutions providers, has officially unveiled a significant investment in a fleet of 32 Tesla Model 3 electric vehicles (EVs), taking the total number of Tesla EVs in the company’s fleet to over 40. The investment is part of its company-wide environmental strategy, and one that will eventually see all of Ground Control’s 100 company cars transition to electric vehicles over the next 12 months. Says Simon Morrish, CEO, Ground Control: “A strong commitment to the environment, and playing our part in protecting it, has always been a core guiding principle at Ground Control, so we are extremely pleased to have achieved another milestone

12

www.landud.co.uk

in this regard with our investment in 32 Tesla Model 3 electric vehicles.” Morrish states the commercial priorities for Ground Control when it started to look at transitioning its company vehicle fleet were: 1) it needed to ensure employees were no worse off – either financially or in terms of the quality and performance of the vehicle itself; 2) the business needed to be as close to cost-neutral itself as a result of the investment; and 3) there should be no loss of productivity across the business.

“I’m very proud and pleased to say that initial indications are we have secured all three, which in my mind makes this investment a major commercial and environmental success story for us.” “With the launch of the Tesla Model 3, the economic benefits are too compelling to ignore,” he continues. “The business is cost-neutral in comparison to investing in a fleet of diesel or petrol cars over the lifetime of each vehicle, when the total cost of ownership is measured against that of a combustion engine car and its fuel, servicing, road tax and so on. And, importantly, the take home pay of Ground Control employees using the vehicles will rise in 2020 due to the introduction of a ‘Zero benefit in kind’ tax system, ensuring they don’t ‘lose out’ financially from their transiting to an EV.”

GARDEN DESIGN

BRISTOL ACCESSIBLE GARDEN Outerspace Creative Landscaping designed this large accessible garden for a family with a very active outdoor lifestyle. The challenge was to use the additional requirement of wheelchair access to create a garden for the whole family to use and enjoy. Level changes were resolved across the whole garden using gently sloping curved paths to create some great dynamic lines.

The paths are finished with resin bound gravel, a great material for forming curves and very wheelchair friendly. Curved planting strips form concentric arcs around the lawn and these are set at different heights making them visible from the lawn, lower terrace and the property.

Raised vegetable beds radiate out from the central lawn and can be accessed from both the sloping path and stepped pathway on the far side. A smaller satellite lawn floats off the main lawn and is the perfect

The garden although located on the outskirts of Bristol has a semirural setting and is surrounded by large mature trees and hedges. The central feature of the garden is a stunning raised circular lawn, with paths wrapping around the perimeter set at shallow gradients.

venue for a summer picnic, whilst further lawns extend to create wilder areas for chickens, fruit trees and climbing frames. An additional straight path extends from the edge of the circular lawn, like the hand of a clock, to reach the west facing firepit area, a great destination for a sundowner at the end of the day. The generously proportioned porcelain terrace adjacent to the house accommodates a large dining area, BBQ and outdoor living area with plenty of circulation space all around. The surface is smooth and joints minimal for easy wheelchair movement. A flush threshold detail was created between the interior wooden floor and the terrace

outside. This was achieved by using Millboard composite decking to create a ‘bridge’ between door threshold and the porcelain terrace beyond. The planting palette is bold and punchy with cool blues and purples contrasting with warm bronze and orange tones. Strong architectural planting is softened with evergreen ferns and grasses along with flowering shrubs and spring bulbs for an early hit of colour.

What would say have been your most popular product of this year and would you have said it would be this product at the start of the year? For sheer numbers the obvious answer is native broadleaf hedging – Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Field Maple and Holly etc in a variety of 1 and 2 year sizes. Lavenders remain an inspirational winner – our supply topping 110,000 this year. Texture, form and colour continues to inspire and our sale of Herbaceous Perennials is becoming dominant without our portfolio – 20 years ago demand was practically zero!

Have you undertaken any large case studies this year you would like to draw attention to? The Event Complex Aberdeen We recently teamed up with p1

Contractors Ltd to supply over £150,000 worth of plants for a multimillion-pound Scottish conference/ exhibition centre and largest new entertainment complex in Europe. Replacing the Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre (AECC), The Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA) is a £330 million development that opened in August 2019; it includes a new arena, conference halls, a multipurpose space, hotels and more. The new arena will host acts such as Rod Stewart, Michael Buble, Lewis Capaldi and Elton John in the coming months; it is set to attract an additional 4.5 million visitors bringing £113m of extra spend to the Scottish economy.

Our supply included nearly 40,000 shrubs, 170 three-metre-wide hedera screens, over 30,000 bare-root transplants and more than 400 trees.

Linlithgow-based p1 was responsible for all the soft landscaping on the project, soiling all areas around the complex along with seeding works and tree, shrub and woodland planting around the site. Ronnie Blair Contracts Manager for the project on behalf of p1 Contractors Ltd, added: “Having a company such as Johnsons of Whixley working with us on such a large-scale project has been very reassuring, Iain has taken the time to come up to Scotland and walk the site offering information on the planting to help me with the contract. With the opening of the new complex on the horizon, I am excited about the prospect of returning in a few years to see what it looks like with a bit of maturity something which should be in keeping with the ambitious company we are.”

VISITOR RESPONSE TO URBAN MEADOW FLOWER DISPLAYS

LEADS HEVER CASTLE TO SELL ‘READY-MADE’ EUROFLOR PACKS As a result of the “fantastic success” of its displays of Rigby Taylor’s Euroflor urban meadow flower seed mixes, Kent-based stately home Hever Castle has not only expanded the total area planted this year to more than 5,000 m2, but it has also launched a retail scheme where ‘ready-to-sow’ flower seed kits are available for purchase by visitors. The meadow flower project on the 400-acre estate, which includes an adjoining golf course, was initiated last year by Hever Castle Golf Club’s head greenkeeper Rob Peers to “encourage visitors to both the golf course and the estate to fully enjoy and be immersed by and engaged with the complete site”. He says the project “has been an overwhelming success” with the nine meadow areas – throughout the Follow us @ludmagazine

castle grounds and on areas of the golf course – which feature a wide range of flower species, attracting laudatory comments from visitors in person, in the local press and on social media. Each display is accompanied by an information board about ‘creating your own meadow’.

last year was that preparation is the key to success: it is imperative to have the plot as clean and clear as possible at the point of sowing. That said, there is also the ‘lay down and plant’ FloraFleece biodegradable matting Euroflor option, which eliminates the need for extensive soil preparation.

The Euroflor seed mixes were selected in terms of being ‘best fit’ options in terms of colour and height, as well as in texture and form, and Rob says particular success has been enjoyed with four mixes - Meadow Breeze, Rainbow Annuals, Bleuet de France and Classic that give displays that will last through the summer and into October/November.

“Visitor reaction has been very positive and in response to many enquirers’ asking ‘how can we have similar displays’, we now offer ‘ready to sow’ seed packs as well as the ‘lay down and plant’ FloraFleece matting package – both with instructions - for easy-to-achieve colourful displays.”

Commenting, he says: “The main lesson we took from our experience

MODIFORM INTRODUCES

ECOEXPERT TO THE LANDSCAPE SECTOR WHAT IS ECO-EXPERT Modiform constantly strives to produce packaging and transport products for horticulture that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. We realise that sometimes our plastic products won’t come back to us or go for recycling somewhere else. For instance, the used pots of landscapers are often landfilled or put into kerbside bins where they don’t get recycled. Therefore Modiform have looked into other materials and other markets to see what can be used in these types of situations. After the ‘research’ years Modiform have created a new product range called ‘EcoExpert’. This product range is made from paper fibre instead of plastic. The paper used is 100% recycled (waste from production of cardboard boxes) and comes from FSC sources. The EcoExpert products can easily be recycled through the standard household or commercial cardboard recycling system. Even better for the landscape industry, not only can it be recycled but it can be planted straight into the ground.

20

www.landud.co.uk

And if it finds its way into the natural environment it will degrade within a year.

BENEFITS OF ECO-EXPERT EcoExpert transport trays have a great benefit for retailers and the environment. Plants delivered in plastic trays have to be separated from the usual cardboard secondary packaging that retailers have to deal with. With the EcoExpert trays retailers can treat them as they would any cardboard box and throw it in the standard cardboard recycling system. This saves retailers time and money. EcoExpert pots have a great benefit for retailers, consumers, landscapers and the environment.

Currently landscapers have to squeeze the plant carefully out of the plastic pot, and after planting the plants they are left with many plastic plant pots to do something with. Growers don’t want to take them back and councils won’t recycled them. Landscapers end up paying to dispose of the pots commercially. EcoExpert pots are different: they can be planted with the plant into the ground, where they will degrade and the roots will break through. This saves landscapers time and money on site and contributes to reducing the plastic waste from our sector. Why not ask your grower or plant supplier to provide your plants in EcoExpert pots?

GARDEN DESIGN

JAMES LEE DESIGN

CREATING A CONTEMPORARY YET NATURAL GARDEN SPACE We designed a series of stepped planters that use vibrant planting to soften the transition between the lower ground floor terrace and lawn level in this large garden. The planting is relatively minimalist with each planter containing only a single species of plant, selected for their form and flowering colour at different times over summer. The house was designed by RDA Architects and features large double storey windows which made the views into the garden very important. Our approach was to create a more contemporary garden space in the lower terrace, in the space closest to the modern architecture, and then to develop a more natural look at the lawn level. This allows for softer planting and family friendly elements such as the tree seat, deck terrace and children’s play area.

Elements such as the beautiful concrete planters supplied by Urbis Design were placed at both levels of the garden to link the two spaces.

Design Objectives • To effectively integrate and extend the architectural approach for the house remodelling; in particular to revise the architect’s layout for the interface between the lower and upper levels so that it becomes a warmer and more usable space.

Follow us @ludmagazine

GARDEN DESIGN • To avoid the lower terrace space becoming the ‘main’ space and to encourage/create strong reasons for the family to appreciate and use the whole garden. • To design a space that will suit and engage the Client’s children as they grow older and their needs for the garden evolve.

Design Rationale • The garden is strongly rectilinear and takes it cue from the architecture; the lawn is deliberately kept irregular to integrate the existing trees and so that they are embedded within the design rather than isolated elements. • The space nearer to the house has been given a more architectural form and this interpretation loosens to a more natural expression as you progress through the garden to the wooded area at the rear. • Design elements have been introduced and repeated on both levels (the strip paving and the Urbis bowls) so that there are common elements across both.

• The paths on either side of the garden run through the planting beds to encourage the family to engage with the planting, and so the children can easily watch and see how the plants evolve throughout the growing season.

• The stepping stone strips in the rear half of the garden emphasise a journey through the planting to the play area and a deck terrace that creates a seating space for the parents to use whilst the children are young and need to be supervised during play, and will become a ‘hang out’ space for the children as they grow into their teens. • The tree seat and bench opposite create a space for the children to use for drawing and reading, and makes a feature of the tree (avoids the sense that it is ‘just’ sat in the lawn). • The design therefore creates a series of usable spaces that encourage different parts of the garden to be used, whilst still maintaining a very open feel and not taking away from the size of the garden and the sense of openness.

ARIENSCO TO MANUFACTURE

ZERO-TURNS IN BRITAIN AriensCo has announced that production of Ariens brand zeroturn mowers will commence at the company’s factory in Great Haseley, Oxfordshire. It’s believed these will be the first zero-turns to be manufactured in Europe. AriensCo reports seeing an exceptional growth in demand for zero-turn mowers in the UK and Europe. This follows similar trends in the US, where sales have more than tripled since 2003 as the popularity among users has soared. According to industry analysis, zero-turn sales in Europe have grown more than 30% over the last four years, making them the fastest growing category of ride-on mowers and third fastest in the lawn and garden power equipment sector. “Sales of zero-turns in Europe have experienced exceptional growth over the past three years,” says Darren Spencer, Vice President - EMEA and Asia. “AriensCo has experienced this growth in

26

www.landud.co.uk

numerous markets and, based upon extensive research with our distribution partners, we expect the growth to continue. This industry analysis points to the many opportunities to be met by producing zero-turns at our Great Haseley plant. We currently sell into ten different countries within Europe and aim to increase our European footprint in 2020. Future growth will accelerate as the benefits of zero-turn mowers are understood by customers. Zero-turn users are experiencing increased speed of cut and greater versatility over tractors and out-fronts.” During 2019 AriensCo continues to make significant investment in the Oxfordshire factory in preparation for zero-turn production, including a new production line, fixtures and tooling. The UK will be manufacturing CE zero-turns for European markets only and will initially be producing the IKON, APEX and ZENITH models. Close

collaboration with the US will be maintained to ensure products match up to Ariens’ reputation for manufacturing quality. Zero-turn production in the UK is seen to offer significant advantages, allowing for rapid delivery and improved availability throughout the year. There is also potential for zero-turns to be adapted with features and benefits to meet local market needs. Increased utilisation of the manufacturing facility at Great Haseley will provide operational cost benefits and will generate a number of new jobs for the area. The first zero-turn to come off the production line will be at the end of October.

DEEP AERATION RELIEVES COMPACTION This is because the ground is usually so compact at depth it needs the hammer to break through). Once the probe has reached one metre depth, compressed air is released up to a maximum of 20Bar (280psi), which is needed to fracture and fissure the soil. The probe is withdrawn and the process repeated using twometre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern - this means that each shot interconnects with the previous ones.

Waterlogging on grassed areas such as parks, around trees in public spaces and all types of sports pitches is often the result of heavy compaction. The action of normal aeration, use of machines and foot traffic, over time can all contribute to panning and poor drainage, depriving grass and tree roots of oxygen and

nutrients. Deep aeration specialists Terrain Aeration have been providing a long-term solution to this for over twenty-five years. The Terrain Aeration’s Terralift machines hammer a hollow probe one metre into the soil using a JCB road breaker gun.

On the tail end of the air blast, dried seaweed and water polymer are injected which stick to the walls of the fractures and fissures and, over time, expand and contract with the moisture content in the soil - similar to “breathing” underground. Biochar can also be incorporated which collects contaminates in the soil structure. The 1½” probe holes created by the Terralift machine are backfilled with Lytag aggregate to provide a semi permanent aeration/ventilation shaft, helping to keep the whole aeration process working. The Terrain Aeration process is ecologically sound, there is no mess and the deep aeration ensures good drainage for many years ahead. Terrain Aeration 01449 673783 www.terrainaeration.co.uk

THE BEFORE AND AFTER OF ONE METRE DEEP AERATION COMPACTION AND WATERLOGGING STOP PLAY. DOWNTIME COSTS MONEY. Terrain Aeration’s long-term treatment reaches one metre deep where compressed air blasts the compaction. The soil is opened up for good drainage and a healthy sward with minimum disruption. We have been successfully aerating sports turf, bowling greens, golf courses, parks, trees and gardens for over twenty-five years.

GROUNDSKEEPING & EQUIPMENT (Left to right) Dealers Paul Hodgson and Alastair Briggs of Greenlay with Seaton Carew Golf Club greens chairman Jonathan Beaumont and John Deere territory manager Richard Charleton.

FINANCE PACKAGE

PAYING OFF FOR SEATON CAREW Seaton Carew Golf Club near Hartlepool will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2024 and the club, which is the 10th oldest in England, is determined to make sure its course is in the best condition possible for those celebrations. Since being established with 14 holes in 1874, not only has the golf course undergone numerous changes – today it offers an unusual total of 22 holes with five different layouts – so has the way in which it is maintained. In the early years even the club’s professional would have been expected to assist with cutting fairways, probably using a horsedrawn mower, and rolling greens.

28

www.landud.co.uk

Today a team of six well-trained greens staff led by acting head greenkeeper Ian Stewart work tirelessly to ensure these championship links are kept in the best condition, and the club has recently invested more than £200,000 in the latest advanced technology from John Deere to ensure they can achieve those goals. A new John Deere Financial lease package arranged by local dealer Greenlay of Cramlington in Northumberland includes a ProGator utility vehicle with HD200 low-profile amenity sprayer, an HPX Gator utility vehicle, a 4049R compact tractor, three 220SL walk-

behind greens mowers, a 2653B utility tees & surrounds mower and a 2500B triplex greens mower, plus ancillary equipment. “With our previous lease arrangement coming to an end, we decided that a one-stop shop approach, with all the new kit, advice and back-up coming from one business, would potentially make a better deal for the club,” says greens chairman Jonathan Beaumont. “The equipment and finance package from Greenlay, who helped us to work out the deal based on a mix of new and exdemonstration machines, proved to be just what we were looking for.

GROUNDSKEEPING & EQUIPMENT “Dealing with Alastair Briggs and Paul Hodgson of Greenlay was the best decision the club made. Their all-round service and communication throughout the process was first class, and we’ve established a very good relationship. Having worked in horticulture before, I knew John Deere’s reputation for quality equipment. When Ian and I made the recommendation to the golf club, they liked what they saw as well and the finance committee agreed the budget, so there was a proper consensus all round.”

is very accurate, so you can be confident everything’s being applied correctly. We certainly use a little less chemical now and there’s also been a massive saving on man hours doing the spraying job.

Ian Stewart initially attended a BIGGA Section open day at Greenlay, which was the first time he had visited the dealership, and was very impressed by the facilities and the people he met. “I wanted to see the sprayer and Greenlay had one brought in,” he says.

“A great deal of thought and effort went into this purchase over a long period of time, and we received lots of good advice from Greenlay – they were always available to answer our questions at any time. Some of their recommendations I didn’t think were right at the time, but they have been proved right since and it’s been a great deal all round.”

“The sprayer has a much bigger capacity at 750 litres compared to our previous 300-litre mounted machine, and the controls are really good. The automatic rate controller

“We had the mowers on long-term demonstration and found them to be easy to operate, with a very good quality of cut. alongside a large practice area, and considering the development of a short-game area. The club also has a six-hole academy course which is used by its current PGA professional Clifford Jackson to encourage youngsters and adult beginners to take up the game. Seaton Carew has already played host to a number of major amateur championships, including two Brabazon Trophies, a Carris Trophy and various other national and international events. It is now hoping, with the help of its new machinery fleet and the dedication of its greenkeeping team, that the course will be considered for yet another major championship to help mark its 150-year anniversary.

Alongside the work on the course, Seaton Carew Golf Club is building a new indoor coaching facility

NEW VERTI-DRAIN HELPS THE CENTURION CLUB

PREPARE FOR UL INTERNATIONAL CROWN Andy Garland, Course Manager at Hertfordshire’s Centurion Club, is working on improving coursewide surface drainage with a little help from his new Verti-Drain 7521. Focussing on the fairways, his latest bit of kit from Charterhouse Turf Machinery, will be fundamental as club preparations ramp up to host the 2020 UL International Crown event. Televised to millions, 2020 will be the fourth edition of the Women’s Professional tournament and the first time it will be hosted in the UK. Andy and his greens team of 12 are already well into preparations to ensure the course is fit for a worldwide audience. “When it comes to aeration, we have a small machine for use on the greens, but we had been hiring in a unit for work on the fairways” he explains. “The trouble with that was, the

30

www.landud.co.uk

effectiveness of the work conducted was very much at the mercy of the weather and the resulting ground conditions on that day.” With previous experience of Verti-Drains, Andy spoke with his local dealer Browns and had a demonstration of the 7521 model. “You know what you’re going to get with a Verti-Drain – the ability to use different tines to work at good depths and build quality that can handle compacted soils.” Having taken delivery of his new machine complete with different head options in August, the 7521 has been busy on the fairways, together with some deep aeration work on the greens. “We equipped the Verti-Drain with 1” tines and aerated all of the fairways which instantly improved surface drainage. Water dispersal has been

so much better which is crucial as we head towards the winter period. We hope to get one more round done on all 18 holes before the tractor gets put onto renovation projects over the winter. This should help us emerge in spring ready for full tournament preparation.” Andy concludes, “By having our own VertiDrain we can be flexible around the weather conditions and the maintenance schedule to maximise its effectiveness. It will be a key tool as we get ready for our big event next summer.”

GROUNDSKEEPING & EQUIPMENT

ENDLESS POSSIBILITES

WITH CORDLESS TECHNOLOGY Since the introduction of battery powered tools, landscapers are now faced with having to choose between new cordless and traditional petrol powered machines when stocking their fleet. Petrol (and diesel) powered equipment has been the go to for professionals for many years, however cordless technology has recently evolved at a rapid pace and is now at a point where it can deliver similar performance to traditional petrol products. As a result, battery powered tools are becoming more and more sought after for working environments. So why are more landscapers choosing to move to this new alternative?

Improved usability For professional users, perhaps one of the greatest benefits of cordless technology is the reduced vibration. Extensive use of handheld power tools can cause Hand-Arm-Vibration (HAV) syndrome (also know as ‘Vibration White Finger’) and the reduction in vibration of cordless tools can help reduce the risk of this occurring. With this in mind, an increasing number of landscapers are moving towards battery powered machinery due to its lightweight nature and reduced vibration during operation, making tools more comfortable to use. In addition to being comfortable to use and having less vibrations, battery technology also offers

32

www.landud.co.uk

noise reduction benefits. For many, landscaping and the loud noise of equipment in operation go hand in hand. However, when a hospital or a school requires mowing or other grounds maintenance work to be completed outside of normal working hours to minimise disruption, this can become increasingly difficult for contractors to manage. This is where cordless technology separates itself from petrol and diesel alternatives. Some manufacturers have developed cordless technology so quiet in operation that no ear defender protection is required, keeping any disruption to an absolute minimum and allowing ground maintenance work to be carried out in any location at more convenient times.

Follow us @ludmagazine

GROUNDSKEEPING & EQUIPMENT Keeping costs down There are also huge maintenance benefits to be gained through the use of cordless technology. A batterypowered system keeps things very simple and removes the possibility of significant machine downtime that can occur on petrol or diesel engines through potential mechanical faults or general wear and tear. With cordless technology, all you need to do is make sure the battery is fully charged and you’re ready to go work. Some manufacturers even offer interchangeable batteries between products, so every last drop of battery power is put to use and allows the highest levels of machinery uptime. Furthermore, the use of battery technology eradicates the need to store and use costly petrol. With fuel prices ever on the increase, professional users are feeling the financial impact of a constant need for petrol, whereas with battery power this is not a concern.

Going green In addition to noise reduction and simple maintenance, cordless technology can go along way in helping reduce carbon footprint. The UK maintains strict engine emission guidelines on Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) to limit air pollution from the likes of chainsaws or mowers. With this in mind, the use of battery-powered products can have a significant impact on the longterm environmental protection of your surrounding work environment and ensure even the toughest emissions regulations are met. Although it will be a little while before sales of battery powered products rival that of petrol or diesel alternatives, cordless technology is here to stay and its popularity continues to rise with professionals – with many already making a total switch over to cordless tools. Offering exceptional performance, ease of maintenance and use, quiet operation and carbon footprint reduction, cordless technology offers the landscaping market more options than ever before.

NEW GREENMECH

SURE-TRAK REVOLUTIONISES EMBANKMENT WORKING FOR SOUTH WEST ARB “My previous employer had been a longstanding user of the SAFE-Trak units and, having looked at other machines, when it came to working on embankments or challenging terrain, no other chippers came close.” After quickly adding a second SAFE-Trak to his fleet, Stewart then heard about the launch of GreenMech’s next generation track system, SURE-Trak. Allowing safe traversing of slopes in excess of 35 degrees, the pivoting SURE-Trak assemblies allow each track to maintain contact with the ground independently, while following differing contours, to provide a surer footprint and improved stability. “When I saw what the 19-28 fitted with SURETrak system could do, it was a complete game changer. It can get absolutely anywhere and the ability to tilt the body means it’s now even easier and safer for the operator to feed in material, no matter the embankment angle.”

GreenMech’s new pivoting track extension system has proven itself to be a real game changer for Scotland’s South West Arb. With an increasing number of rail-side de-veg projects demanding work on steep embankments, the SURETrak’s ability to perform in even the most challenging of environments saw owner Stewart Ball taking

34

www.landud.co.uk

delivery of the first SURE-Trak 19-28 woodchipper in the UK earlier this year. “When I established South West Arb five years ago, the first thing I purchased was a GreenMech SAFETrak chipper” explains Stewart, who now heads-up a team of 15.

To help in the delivery of power line and railway contracts, Stewart was delighted to take delivery of his SURE-Trak 19-28 from local dealer Lloyd Ltd, in January 2019. “Not only can they reach any given location, but the actual chipping performance is second to none. The powerful rollers will pull in even the most awkward forked material for the disc blades to process. Keep these sharp and they won’t skip a beat.” Stewart concludes, “Since we’ve had the SURE-Trak, it’s been working on embankments that other chippers could only dream of getting to!”

BOUND SURFACING

THE HISTORIC HITCHIN MARKET

PAVING REFURBISHMENT AND REPOINTING PROJECT In talking to Local Authority Engineers recently, it has become very clear that the information in an independent Investigative Report, which was made following a detailed 8 year durability evaluation and with site inspections by the team from Paving Expert.com that was carried out approximately 2 years ago in 2017, would be of tremendous assistance to ALL Town and City Councils, District and other Unitary Authorities around this country. The Historic Hitchin Market paving refurbishment and repointing project using GftK’s vdw 850 plus Paving Joint Mortar was now carried out after extensive evaluations and field testing for 12 months by the responsible engineers, completed 10 years ago, and just as in the inspection two years ago, in 2019 after 10 years service, it is still look good, performing in all weather conditions and under frequent heavy trafficking of this busy market square!

‘After 8 years it looks like it was jointed yesterday!’ - These were the words from www.PavingExpert.com when they visited to inspect the paving refurbishment that they had last witnessed underway on the site eight years ago, when the traditional granite sett paving of the historic Hitchin Market Square in Hertfordshire, was refurbished and repointed with GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar. The expert continues: ‘Oh yes - The paving had been patched and pointed, re-pointed and grouted, glued and all sorts over the years, but nothing lasted long. They might get a couple of years, but before you knew it, the setts were a rocking and rolling all over again. Faced with the prospect of having to lift and re-lay the whole square, at huge cost, the Local Authority and their Consultants undertook some tests and decided to have one last roll of the dice with what looked like a very promising product: VDW 850 resin jointing mortar by NCC Streetscape.’

The Hitchin Town Centre Paving Refurbishment Inspection Report in full can be viewed pavingexpert.com/point_ncc06.htm

Like many old town centres and market squares, this is now a very different and demanding environment for paving and

36

www.landud.co.uk

particularly the pointing, due to multiple heavy duty loadings and all sorts of modern traffic exposure, plus frequent mechanical street cleaning etc. However, working in phases, without closing the market, this project was completed on time and on budget, because work could continue and be completed using GftK’s vdw 850. This unique paving joint mortar is based on graded, water dispersed, epoxy resin coated and bound, alluvial, no-fines quartz sand. No-fines means no-dust produced in mixing either - very important for occupied streets with people and businesses continuing to work. Just as the contractor can continue to work, even despite the wet weather and low temperatures throughout, which would have made any cement based or single-pack paving pointing mortar useless and doomed to failure. Today after now 10 Years, the historic market paving is still looking great, a valuable asset to the Town; most importantly it will also continue to do so!

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

MULTIFUNCTIONAL PAVING PHOTOS – CHRIS HODSON

Careful design of the spaces around buildings is as important as the buildings themselves with multifunctional paving that is both practical and attractive, argues the trade association Interpave. Designers face a wide range of demands for hard surfaces serving housing developments. Multifunctionality is key and care is needed to anticipate and control the size and frequency of vehicles using various areas. For example, new Building Regulations Approved Documents B (for England and taking effect at the end of August) include requirements for fire and rescue vehicle access. Here, distances from buildings, as well as width, height and turning circles, are tabulated. The access

42

www.landud.co.uk

paving must be designed to support these heavy vehicles (for example, 12.5 tonnes including high-reach appliances), albeit only on an occasional basis. Of course, other heavy vehicles for refuse/recycling collection or furniture removal will be more frequent visitors.

Practical and Aesthetic Obviously, heavier-duty paving design than just for pedestrians will be needed for these vehicles. But that doesn’t mean that housing and other developments have to look like industrial yards with a sea of asphalt. Concrete block paving – which for decades has been used for the most demanding heavy-duty applications including container terminals – is uniquely placed to satisfy both practical and aesthetic demands. Here, distinct, modular

units and designed variations in colour, texture and shape break up areas giving visual interest and a human scale not possible with formless materials. In recent years, Interpave’s manufacturer members have transformed this concept, moving away from the simple, regular patterns and colours of the 1970s and 1980s. Today, precast concrete paving offers an extensive palette of styles, shapes, colours and textures – whatever the loading and trafficking requirements – enabling designers to create places for people. The challenge for designers is to use the flexibility of precast concrete paving to integrate the varied performance demands of different areas within an overall, coherent design.

Follow us @ludmagazine

CONCRETE & STONEWORK Key SuDS Technique These multifunctional possibilities are expanded further with concrete block permeable paving (CBPP), a uniquely flexible SuDS (sustainable drainage systems) technique. It provides an inherent drainage system that requires no additional land take for water storage, treatment or conveyance, and offers the same visual richness as conventional block paving. Its capability to attenuate water flows during rainfall for gradual discharge is optimised by considering distinct storage ‘compartments’ of permeable paving strategically deployed around a development, each with a flow control demonstrating compliance to local authorities as part of the SuDS design approval process. In fact, it can also accept runoff from other impermeable paving and roofs, giving further savings.

Overall, whole-lifecosts were much lower than those for the conventional piped drainage system. The Monitoring Report noted capital cost savings of £314 per home using SuDS, with further potential savings available through more holistic design, as well as lower maintenance costs.

Holistic Design This is particularly interesting when considering the extra water storage provided within deeper CBPP constructions needed to support heavier traffic, as discussed earlier. Here, a holistic design approach combining trafficking and drainage can maximise multifunctionality and still deliver attractive hard surfaces. CBPP also addresses both flooding and pollution issues by storing and cleaning water runoff at source avoiding drains surcharging and downstream flooding. It removes water-borne pollution and provides a gradual flow of clean water at the head of the ‘SuDS management train’ enabling safe, open SuDS features on the surface downstream and enhancing landscape design and biodiversity. This technology also eliminates pipework, gulleys and manholes, and should therefore cost less than conventional drainage and paving. These savings are demonstrated at the Lamb Drove SuDS Monitoring project in Cambridgeshire, which assesses various SuDS techniques, including CBPP, in a management train, compared with a conventional piped drainage system nearby. Follow us @ludmagazine

A new Interpave case study on this project has just been published, alongside Interpave’s new guidance document – ‘Design and Construction of Concrete Block Permeable Pavements’ Edition 7. This guidance aims to ensure that CBPP delivers predictable, robust solutions and to minimise cost, maintenance and adoption issues. It includes the most recent CBPP techniques, such as overlays to existing road constructions and enhanced, predictable water storage using flow controls. Design procedures have been comprehensively updated and new, straightforward maintenance guidance added.

Finally, it is worth remembering that the key to attractive, durable, costeffective precast concrete paving is to optimise its modular nature, by dimensioning areas to minimise cutting and combining compatible products to avoid it. As with any construction operation, detailing of edges, insertions, level changes and junctions within paving should not just be left to site operatives but resolved off-site by designers. With precast concrete paving of all types, well-established guidelines and case studies are readily available from Interpave’s information resource: www.paving.org.uk

Detailing Guidelines Another new Interpave guidance document, ‘Detailing Permeable Paving & SuDS with Precast Concrete Products’, is also available. Precast concrete paving products from Interpave manufacturer members play important roles in SuDS ranging from complete permeable pavements to standard components helping other SuDS techniques work more effectively. This document brings together a variety of construction details, demonstrating best practice to make SuDS robust and durable over the long-term.

CONCRETE & STONEWORK NEW PORCELAIN TILE PROTECTOR JOINS LTP’S ECOPROTEC® RANGE LTP has introduced a new eco-friendly ECOPROTEC® protection treatment for unpolished porcelain tiles. Suitable for use indoors and outside, the new ECOPROTEC® Porcelain Tile Protector is a water-based ‘pre-andpost-grout’ treatment; it is designed to protect tiles from staining and allow easy removal of residues of cement-based grouts and two-part resin based jointing compounds, as well as stubborn organic matter.

®

strength | beauty | resilience

Ideal for textured wood and stone-effect patios, the new Porcelain Tile Protector creates a barrier, without forming a film or altering appearance. This helps to improve and increase the working time of grouts and jointing compounds - and greatly reduces the risk of cement and resin staining. The new protector is easy to apply - with a spray, roller or brush – and tiles are treated before grouting or pointing. Then, once residues have been removed and the surface is dry, a further coat can be applied to the tiles and joints, to help assist with future cleaning and aftercare. ECOPROTEC® Porcelain Tile Protector is manufactured by LTP in the UK and is available from UK stock, in one litre and five litre bottles. Other complementary treatments include ECOPROTEC® External Paving Cleaner – a heavy-duty intensive cleaner that can be used before application of the Protector - and ECOPROTEC® Natural Stone & Porcelain Aftercare Cleaner – a highly effective norinse aftercare cleaner for indoor and outdoor spaces. For a free sample and more information on the new treatment and ECOPROTEC® regimes, please visit www.ecoprotec.co.uk or contact LTP on tel. 01823 666213 and email technical@ecoprotec.co.uk

WHEN IS A WALL NOT A WALL? Is a wall ever ‘just a wall’? It’s dividing, defining, enclosing, sheltering, protecting and providing. It does so much, yet we call it ‘just a wall’. We can sit on it, lean against it, stare at it, climb it, step over it, walk around it. Of course we can’t pay it, yet we employ it to do a job. So we make the wall look good and in return it can do its job properly and reward year after year - looking back at us, silently performing its duty regardless of the weather. We have years to appreciate that wall, so picking the stone that helps the wall do its job is very important.

46

www.landud.co.uk

Looking at just one style - Dry Stone Walling originally served as a boundary and stock barrier and was traditionally completed with ‘cock and hen’ topping resonating farming methods that date back to the Neolithic times circa 3000BC. As much art as science, building a dry stone wall without mortar relies on the careful placing of stones and the stones’ own weight to keep it standing – for more than 100 years if it’s a good one. Get up close and personal and you will find that dry stone walls offer amazing habitat

and wildlife corridors. Mosses and lichens, pennywort and cranesbill all make their homes here. Wrens, wheatears, little owls, even lizards nest in its cavities. The Cotswolds are famous for over 6,437 km of dry stone walls and the walling supplied by Cotswold Hill Stone and Masonry at their quarry near Ford, Cheltenham, looks fantastic employed by this method. In fact Cotswold Hill Stone and Masonry provide numerous choices of Cotswold Limestone and Royal

Forest of Dean Pennant Stone from its two quarries in Gloucestershire. Very different in appearance and colour, both quarries are able to make that wall not just a wall. Random walling, dry stone, rockery, gabion baskets, sawn and split walling, as well as natural stone cladding is available.

The Pennant Sandstone at Birch Hill Quarry, near Park End in the Royal Forest of Dean also makes its mark by being popular with landscape architects as it is highly weather resistant and robust. The striking colours of alluring blue and grey is very popular among those seeking a more modern aesthetic and it maintains its appearance generation after generation. Not only that but it also makes an eye-catching decorative feature, with sawn masonry or monolithic stone pieces entwined in the landscape design be it weathered or newly-quarried. Cotswold Hill and their products can also be found at different trade shows throughout the year. For example, they recently supplied sawn paving, rockery and monolith stone for the gold award landscape exhibit at last year’s Malvern Spring Show. Their high quality masonry limestone at the Cotswold Hill Quarry near Stow-on-the-Wold features a fine texture in a pleasing creamy white or honey coloured appearance and is regularly used to produce or repair architectural features such as mullion windows and door surrounds. Both quarries boast a team of skilled stonemasons who work closely alongside their clients to bring ideas to life.

The Pennant sandstone from Birch Hill Quarry is used in all manner of applications, including construction, landscaping, revetment work and civil engineering, one of its most frequent uses is for the restoration or replacement of Regency building features such as steps and memorials. Sometimes the sandstone has a green hue, or a shock of red within it which provides a dynamic and contrasting appearance.

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

CREATING BEAUTIFUL GARDEN ORNAMENTS Cast stone has been a prime building material for hundreds of years. There are many different varieties of cast stone but the main two are semi dry cast and wet cast. In both cases moulds are used to create the relevant shape of each component. These are mainly architectural components but in the case of established companies like Chilstone a semi- dry mix has been used for the last 66 years to create beautiful garden ornaments such as fountains, urns, benches.

Semi-Dry Cast The first manufacturing method involves compacting a semi-dry cast stone mix into wooden or fibre glass moulds. Chilstone use specially selected arrogates that they blend on site along with other materials to produce a mix that once moulded, closely resembles natural stone but at a fraction of the price of natural stone. As the name suggests there is a small amount of moisture in the mix and once a garden ornament or architectural stone has been cast, water must be added daily to enable the stone to fully cure over 8-10 days. If this does not happen the stone will be sent out green and under strength. Structural products can be made providing reinforcement (rebar) is used when structural items are being made. The ability to reinforce semi-dry cast stone is yet another

48

www.landud.co.uk

advantage over natural stone. In addition, channels, sockets, bars, and lifting sockets can be cast into the stone. These can be made to the engineer’s specification for components such as cills, columns, coping, portico’s and entablatures, these can be made in a variety of colours from Portland, bath stone, York stone or ragstone (see images)

Follow us @ludmagazine

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

Wet-Cast Wet cast is similar to casting in plaster and provides a close-grained dense surface which can be stronger that semi dry cast but looks more like cement and less like natural stone. It allows precise rendering of fine detail and, for structural elements, the use of complex reinforcements. Wet-cast cast stone units usually require secondary surface finishing and typical techniques include acid etching, grit blasting, hand or mechanical tooling and polishing. Wet cast mixes use considerably more water than the semi-dry process and are generally a through mix of the finished face. The mix design is especially critical to the process and the finished appearance. After the wet-cast mix is poured into the mould, it is compacted using a vibrating table or vacuum casting, or increasingly by the use of self-compacting additives. Longer lead times are required for wet-cast cast stone as the process generally yields only one cast per mould per day.

Fibre Reinforced Cast Stone This process incorporates fibre reinforcement into a higher water content mix that can be either poured or sprayed into moulds, from which the product is demoulded the following day. The incorporation of fibre reinforcing into the wet-cast mix increases the tensile strength of the finished product. A dense cast stone product with a close face texture is achieved which can be varied by the use of secondary surface treatments. Often fibre reinforced cast stone units are produced in thin sections which reduces the weight and associated manual handling issues,

and offers the opportunity, through careful design and the use of specialist fixings, for retrofitting the fibre reinforced product to the structure. Longer lead times are required for fibre reinforced cast stone as the process generally yields only one cast per mould per day.

What is cast stone used for Cast stone proves to be a sound investment that improves with the passing years. This is even more important in these changing times, which demand that our society moves away from disposability and looks to create long-lasting products that stand the test of time. We really value the artistic and cultural heritage of our gardens and buildings here in the U.K and around the world. As such, companies have sought to create a collection which preserves this history for future generations. Chilstone have been privileged enough to gain access to some wonderful pieces of stone work. They have carefully restored damaged stonework for many wellknown clients, including Embley Park and Hever Castle.

HIGH PRAISE

FOR COMPLEX GARDEN PROJECT A Staffordshire couple say they have a garden worthy of ‘Chelsea Flower Show’ after they chose a Brett Landscaping Approved Installer to complete a complex multi-level project at their house.

Brett Landscaping provided 62 square metres of mountain mist grey Flamed Sandstone slabs; three metres of Drivestyle Kerb; 26 metres of High Kerb and three square metres of Aura silver cobbles.

They designed and fitted a square, brick-built bird bath; circular paving areas; steps to a replica railway signal box, and a circular paving design - leading to steps under a pergola seating area.

When Jake Brown Landscapes’ team was called in by John Wardle to work on his family’s garden redesign project, they worked with Brett Landscaping to ensure that the customer had the ideal products from an extensive range.

The project was a challenge in planning and logistical terms for Jake Brown Landscaping as the area consisted of multiple levels, a sloping garden and there were considerable space constraints.

Homeowner John Wardle said: “Our garden has been totally transformed: from an unloved mess to, what our neighbour described as, ‘a show garden that you’d see at the Chelsea Flower Show!’.

The team had to remove a small retaining wall, a fence and part of a boundary hedge to get a mini excavator onto the property. They also had to crane materials in to the site as the side entrance was only around 80cm wide.

“The challenges that our plans - and the existing layout of our garden - presented were promptly solved and, in each case, were an improvement on what we had originally wanted.”

Brett Landscaping, which celebrates 110 years in business this year, is an established manufacturer of high quality, ethically sourced natural stone paving, concrete block paving, porcelain paving and concrete paving.

Mr Wardle said that watching the Brett Approved Installers work was “amazing”. He said: “They created a precision job that has truly blown away everyone who has seen it.” Jake Brown said: “I suggested Brett materials as the mountain mist grey

slabs were a perfect colour for the garden and they are easy to keep clean. They match very well with the blue engineering bricks, charcoal edging kerbs and Aura silver grey cobbles. “All Brett products have a 10-year product guarantee, which gives the customer peace of mind.”

Jake Brown continued: “The finished project looked stunning, creating new areas to sit, more patio areas and, ultimately, would mean less maintenance for the family so they can enjoy their space without having to work too hard to keep it looking lovely.” There are opportunities for paving contractors to become Brett Approved Installers and be accredited by Brett to install hard landscaping to the approved British Standard. Contractors who consistently demonstrate a high level of service and proficiency will then be able to provide customers with a five-year installation guarantee and a 10-year product guarantee.

THE PLACE TO BE Woodscape recently had the pleasure of working with Macgregor Smith Landscape Architects, who headed up an incredible public realm enhancement project in the centre of the World Heritage City of Bath, which completed in June 2019. The aim was to enhance the public realm environment and the opportunities for people to dwell by introducing a range of seating and sculptural elements, expanding Bath’s iconic character and design aesthetic into newer areas of the City. “As a practice, we’re passionate about creating positive places within our cities - encouraging people to interact with their surroundings and highlighting the importance of social spaces and planting within urban contexts. The SouthGate project was a real gem for us with such an emphasis placed on the public realm, a dedication from the Client to achieving the highest quality and

56

our huge passion for the site given its location a stone’s throw away from our studio in Bath. Working extremely closely with all the stakeholders meant we were able to achieve a design that was perfectly tailored to the unique brief for the site and it has been an absolute joy to see all the spaces being so well used and already feeling like an integral part of the fabric of the City.” Gemma Griffin, Macgregor Smith The central plaza within the SouthGate Centre, along with Brunel Square outside the main train station, were identified as places that could be more effectively utilised for both the everyday, and for the many events that take place in Bath throughout the year. With a variety of literature, music and art festivals, fetes, and community events aimed at bringing all ages and tastes together, the redevelopment had to be practical, flexible, and of course inspiring.

The necessary flexibility of the spaces required planter seats that were movable to allow reworking of the area for the various events. The key circular seat design with offset tree void was made up from a combination of timber slats and intricate bronze fretwork from Inspired Metal, with Woodscape bringing the necessary technical experience required to manufacture the seats in such a way that they could be relocated as needed, working alongside the team to ensure the perfect solution. “The furniture designs were all bespoke and required specific tailoring to meet the demands of the brief. Working with the right fabricators was key to achieving a successful end product and the teams at Woodscape and Inspired Metal were integral to this process. Their wealth of experience and ability to explore innovative design solutions enabled the team to progress through from concept

STREET FURNITURE designs, technical details and mock ups to ensure the optimum quality of product was achieved, which met the high expectations set for this prestigious project.” Tom Notley, Macgregor Smith. Custom metal tubular benches were produced to perfectly wrap around a series of artificial grass mounds, mimicking the ‘combes’ that are so reminiscent of the local landscape and bringing colour and life to the space. The existing large Plane tree at the heart of the space is embraced as a centrepiece within the design and encircled by a circular hardwood tree seat with bronze fretwork text exploring what makes the City unique. The space is finished off beautifully with dramatic lighting spilling out from within a striking bronze lantern, composed from intricate typography depicting an A-Z of ‘What Bath Means to Me’. Four large circular tree seats were produced for Brunel Square, utilising a bronze finish skirt to tie into the existing Bath design aesthetic, and durable hardwood slats with L-shaped backrest, providing considerable seating space for an area with high pedestrian traffic.

“It’s always a pleasure to be part of a scheme so loved by all those involved from start to finish, and everyone at Woodscape is looking forward to seeing our street furniture enjoyed by local residents and visitors to Bath.” Ashley Tarry, Woodscape.

The impact of the public realm enhancements and new street furniture have already brought about a huge benefit to the area and will continue to do so as they play an important role in the cultural activity at the heart of the City for years to come.

The scheme has been a great success, with public use of the spaces in SouthGate and in Brunel Square outside the main train station increasing dramatically.

CAN HELP DEMONSTRATE THE BENEFITS OF A CIRCULAR ECONOMY As awareness and understanding of the role of recycling in the circular economy increases, more and more organisations in the UK and across Europe are sourcing and / or replacing their stocks with sustainable solutions and products where practical. The demand for sustainable street furniture made from recycled materials or material that can be recycled at the end of its service life, continues to increase. It is the responsibility of manufacturers to ensure that the recycled material and design of the product strives to outperform traditional solutions on functionality, maintenance costs and value for money, while helping community leaders demonstrate some of the real tangible benefits of a circular economy.

Sustainability that Outperforms on Design, Operational Costs and Value for Money

Exploring Enviropol® - a recycled material used in the manufacture of street furniture Glasdon first introduced Enviropol into its range in 1993. This recycled material is predominantly produced from post consumer and industrial polythene, including used supermarket carrier bags, and it is the result of the increased availability of ‘quality’ segregated and uncontaminated waste for recycling. The advances in the control and separation of recyclable waste means that we can maintain strict controls over the recycled materials used to formulate Enviropol. Today Glasdon design and manufacture a range of seats, benches and picnic tables using Enviropol.

58

www.landud.co.uk

Enviropol is dense, strong and weather-resistant, ensuring Glasdon seats, benches and picnic tables have a long, virtually maintenancefree service life. Available in black and brown, it is self-coloured and therefore does not require painting or any additional surface treatment at any time. Enviropol is also 100% recyclable when it reaches the end of its service life.

Quality by Design All Glasdon Enviropol material seats are rigorously tested by our in-house Quality Assurance Department for strength and durability, ensuring maximum resistance against the numerous challenges faced in external environments.

STREET FURNITURE/GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE HERITAGE SQUARE BIN FOR ON-STREET RECYCLING With more than six out of ten of us now describing ourselves as ‘committed recyclers’ on-street recycling needs to gain apace to meet public needs. To help in this process that turns a waste liability into valuable assets, Leafield Environmental is launching its new Square Heritage Recycling bin range to assist waste stream segregation ‘in the street’.

Proven System Solutions for Landscaped Roofs

Proven and popular with Local Authorities, Parish Councils and urban landscape designers alike, the Heritage Square Bin can now be designated for the collection of specific recyclate streams. WRAP compliant, colour coded inserts with their ‘propeller’ apertures, along with explicit colour coded graphics, help identify the specific waste that should be deposited. Apertures can also be blanked off for bins to be used against walls. One of the most durable bins available, thanks to the double wall construction throughout the entire bin, the Heritage Square’s outer walls now sport ridges to prevent unwanted fly posting. With a 110 litre capacity, diagonal hinged, slam-shut door for easy access, (no lifting required), the Heritage Square Recycling Bin will help meet the need for onstreet recycling for many years to come.

HLM ARCHITECTS

THE CONCOURSE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD Leading design and architecture company, HLM Architects, recently delivered the regeneration of a 1970’s public open spaced located at the heart of the University of Sheffield.

the University and within budget. The new project included over 3000m2 of new paving, a dynamic lighting scheme, bespoke seating and seasonal interest through the planting scheme.

The space had been underused and the team at HLM set out to understand the needs of the students, staff, lecturers and people that could benefit from using the area. The scheme was to bring it back to life as a vibrant, social and meaningful space, one that was animated during the day and at night.

Alethea Ottewell, HLM Landscape Architecture Lead, commented, “As a place of education and socialising, we wanted to develop a space that would inspire and nurture, one that would help improve people’s lives. The design was uncluttered and flexible, meeting the needs of a variety of users and functions that occur through the academic year, from social, learning and quiet activities.”

It functioned for many years as a featureless thoroughfare, connecting the University buildings with an area for cycle parking. The brief for the Concourse was to upgrade and improve the public realm of the area, complementing the University’s Masterplan public realm works, the first phase of which had been completed. HLM Landscape was appointed to develop the initial Stage 2 concept design, within the aspirations of Follow us @ludmagazine

The creative lighting scheme promotes use of the space, through the feeling of safety and security, whilst providing a dynamic nighttime streetscape. HLM Landscape worked with lighting designers Arup to create the vibrant public space, including lighting the near-by bridge. In addition, the innovative bespoke seating area was manufactured off site by Evans Conrete with integrated lighting.

The thoughtful design included paving, a significant element of the scheme, which was selected from Charcon for its sustainability credentials. Corten was used for raised planters, introducing a contrast of materials in the urban environment. The planting was designed to respond to the site conditions and climate, with seasonal impact which was previously lacking in the space. Focusing on sustainability, a new external waste recycling strategy was introduced, which has now been implemented across the wider campus. HLM listens and responds to the ambitions of its clients, with studios across the UK and Ireland. HLM’s services across its 180 strong team cover Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Interior Architecture, Masterplanning and Environmental Sustainability.

GREEN SCREENS INSTALLED ON NEW HOUSING ESTATE

PROVIDES INSTANT IMPACT Green-tech has supplied 36 1.8m x 1.2m green screens to Kings Landscapes as part of their extensive landscape plans for a new housing estate in the historic town of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire.

on behalf of Bovis Homes. This included finding a way to screen off a concrete retaining wall which was visible from the road. They wanted a solution that would provide instant impact and turned to Greentech for advice.

Bovis Homes, an established name in British building is building homes on the Stanton Cross estate which is being heralded as an exciting, brandnew community. Once complete it will provide more than 3,650 new homes, 1.5m sq ft of industrial, leisure, retail and office space and create around 3,000 new jobs. It will also bring new public parks, schools, a doctor’s surgery and much more.

Green-tech suggested and supplied their Ivy Green Screens which are perfect for landscaping work or projects where an instant privacy green fence is required. They are simply inserted into the ground without the requirement for pot or planter and they have specially selected growing media which contains controlled release fertiliser and wetting agents to aid rapid establishment.

Leading Landscape Contractor Kings Landscapes was contracted to complete the extensive landscaping

62

www.landud.co.uk

Ian Davis, Contracts Manager from Kings Landscapes commented,

“The installation went well. Fresh topsoil was installed and trenches dug ready so the installation was quick and easy. The location was next to a balancing pond so the operatives had to wear harnesses, lanyards and life jackets to ensure their safety during the installation. The screens are very effective and we would definitely use them again.” Green-tech’s green screens are cost effective, quick to install and are excellent alternatives to fencing. They are available in a range of heights, up to 3 metres.

EXTENDING YOUR OUTSIDE LIVING SPACE

BY FELICITY HODGKINSON, MARKETING MANAGER - ECODEK There is something very appealing about being able to extend your living space outside. Busy lives, dependence on digital devices and often restrictions bought about by inclement weather all provide easy excuses to be holed up indoors, when getting some space and fresh air are so very good for the soul. The variety of flooring and furniture for outdoor spaces has exploded over recent years, with a huge variety for any budget. This means anyone can create the space they want – whether as a quiet spot to unwind or a vibrant space to share with friends and family.

66

www.landud.co.uk

After establishing a budget, the best place to start the planning journey to a perfect space, whether a smaller domestic area or larger-scale project, will be the outdoor flooring materials. Decking outside spaces can be a great choice, and the materials available suit all budgets. From softwood and hardwood timbers, PVC to Wood Polymer Composite products – the range available these days is enormous. Here is a snapshot of the pros and cons of some of the materials available:

SOFTWOOD DECKING Pros The initial financial outlay for softwood timber makes it a great entry point in the decking market. It’s an easy product to work with and has high strength to weight ratio. Timber has its own natural aesthetic and is appealing to many and is extremely easy to purchase.

Cons Softwood timber has a limited lifespan and can need replacing c.5-8 years. As softwood is very absorbent, it is prone to staining, rotting and splitting as well as Follow us @ludmagazine

DECKING significant fade under UV light. It is also recommended that the boards are laid on a fall to avoid water sitting on the surface and increasing the likelihood of the growth of algae. Although the lifespan of the material is short, the higher maintenance means higher lifetime costs of the of the deck.

HARDWOOD DECKING Pros Hardwood has beautiful, rich colourways often graces the pages of glossy design magazines. Robust and durable with a high strength to weight ratio, it’s easy to cut and work with. Hardwood is a more premium option for timber decking and appeals to a certain demographic.

Cons As a premium material, Harwood carries a much higher initial cost than softwood. Like softwood, it is also absorbent so prone to staining, rotting and splitting and will fade under UV light. Hardwood also requires regular maintenance, means higher lifetime cost of the deck. Hardwood decking will need

to have continuous airflow under the boards.

HOLLOW WOOD PLASTIC COMPOSITE Pros Hollow composite boards are now readily available online from many importers. The product carries a low to medium cost and requires less maintenance than timber. The boards are generally finished in a reversible profile with repetitive colourways.

Cons Hollow boards tend to have a weaker structure with a low weight load ratio. The need to be laid on a fall to avoid water collecting inside the boards, as this can cause the boards to shatter if it freezes in the winter. As most of these products are manufactured overseas, this can lead to inconsistent supply and batch problems. In addition, there tends to be little regard to the provenance of the raw materials, and the warranty offered is generally relatively short for a product that is supposed to outlive standard softwood timber.

Image © David Barbour

SOLID WOOD POLYMER COMPOSITE (WPC) Pros Hugely popular with designers and homeowners alike, solid WPC boards give both architectural and modern contemporary aesthetics. These boards are very robust with a high strength to weight ratio. Boards produced by British manufacturer Ecodek are manufactured from 95% recycled and sustainably sourced raw materials and are 100% recyclable. Solid WPC like this is resistant to algae and mould growth, and will not rot, warp or splinter. They are virtually maintenance free with low potential for slip. Their extruded manufacture ensures consistent colour and dimensions.

Cons Solid WPC does have a medium entry initial cost compared to other decking already discussed above. An applied woodgrain affect does not replicate a natural finish as well as natural timber. It is clear to see that decking materials vary widely, so can suit all budgets, design and personal preferences. Busy lifestyles mean time to relax can be precious and choosing a low maintenance surface really can make all the difference to someone’s down-time.

HOW TO MAINTAIN

YOUR DECKING THIS WINTER Across the country temperatures are dropping fast, and soon gardens will be covered in a picturesque frost worthy of a Christmas card.

An easy way to combat this problem is to store any furniture somewhere safe and dry, like a garage or garden shed. Simple but effective.

But what about the much-loved decking that garden enthusiasts around the UK that have worked so hard on over the summer months? After all of the summer BBQ’s and evening drinks, there’s nothing worse than seeing decking deteriorate in the cold weather.

Keep on top of debris

However, there’s no need to worry – timber treatment company WJ Group has put together a few top tips on how to help keep decking looking its best this winter!

One or two leaves may not seem like a big deal, but a build-up of debris can lead to serious issues. As well as discolouration and premature rotting of the wood, any water that pools up over time can cause decking to warp and twist. Which is a huge problem considering how easy it is to prevent. Simply brush decking once a week, or after a bout of particularly windy weather.

DeckWright Anti-Slip Inserts add grip to help prevent injuries. They’re so reliable that they have an anti-slip rating of 71 and come with a five-year warranty!

Get into pressure washing

Use DeckWright

Colder weather can cause slimy algae to build-up on timber decking areas. They are also prone to moss and a funny fungus called lichen. A great way to get rid of these without scrubbing away is to get a hold of a pressure washer. The high-pressure water blasts any algae or moss off decking, leaving it fresh and clean. Kärcher has a great selection to choose from.

A bit of bad weather doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still get outside in the garden when you can. Where else would the children build a snowman when it snows? When keeping on top of clearing snow off decking,

www.wj-group.co.uk / wj-deckwright

Clear away patio furniture As well as rain and snow potentially damaging the patio furniture itself, high winds could cause tables and chairs to scrape along decking boards, leaving unsightly scratches.

GARDEN DESIGN

SMALL HAMPSTEAD GARDEN Project Value: £60,000 Build Time: 8 weeks Size of Project: 90 sq m The clients were not great gardeners and finally decided the garden had to be rescued when it was quite literally falling down. There were rotting collapsing fences and sleeper retaining walls and the artificial turf was full of moss and had no sub-base. Plants were few and far between and there wasn’t really anywhere to relax in the space. The clients wanted the garden completely redesigned but keeping the layout of the lower patio by the house and retaining the openness of the upper area but introducing interest.

74

www.landud.co.uk

The design upgraded the lower patio and steps to Jura beige limestone and a rendered retaining wall. The steps to the main garden were also widened to improve access, and to strengthen the link between the two garden areas which had previously felt rather separate. The use of stone instantly transformed the look and

feel of the space, making it bright and clean lined. The main garden area was kept open, but a feeling of rooms within it was created by dividing the space into equal thirds using limestone paver paths, with the limestone further linking the upper and lower garden areas together.

GARDEN DESIGN

The raised beds to the rear of the garden add height interest and make the space feel larger, but also more intimate. The planting here is a mix of shade tolerant shrubs and perennials chosen to provide a long season of flower and interest. The fences were all replaced with Jacksons horizontal ‘Hit and Miss fence’ which again contributes to making the space feel larger. A mixture of evergreen and deciduous flowering climbers were trained on the fence to soften it. Finally on the house side of the lower patio, the kitchen wall compromises a wide space of white plaster. This has been broken up by mounting two architectural wall panels, slightly raised from the wall that are backlit at night with LED strip lights. They provide perfect scattered atmospheric light for the table for evening meals outside. Other lighting through the garden highlights steps, entertaining areas and key plants.

READER’S CHOICE - LIGHTING

WEATHERPROOF WINTER WONDER

THE SUPREMELY DURABLE AIRLITE PATH LIGHTS ILLUMINATE BEAUTIFULLY After supplying commercial illuminated bollards to the trade for years with continued success, Northamptonshire lighting specialists Lumena recently added what has become a ‘star attraction’ to their range of path lights. Excited by new innovative designs, and inspired by professional feedback from trusted clients, there was a need for an alternative to heavyduty bollard lights; something equally as durable but with a unique and decorative illumination. The Airlite is a must-see and mustfeel path light that has the aesthetic of high-grade Stainless Steel, but is in fact crafted from strong 3mm thick ‘Anodised Aluminium’. Specifiers need not worry about the high cost associated with high grade Stainless Steel. For a fraction of the price, this supremely weatherproof,

76

www.landud.co.uk

non-corrosive material is designed to withstand the worst weather and coastal environments. In production, a protective layer is formed over the polished surface which lasts indefinitely. The highly weatherproof IP65 path light will look great in any size surrounding, from small, modern gardens to smart commercial premises. It has a sturdy fixed base with 4 installation holes. The design itself is contemporary and elegant, the stand out feature being the ‘bubble-effect’ in the solid resin, heavy duty head. This bubble effect looks great in daylight, and beautiful at night when illuminated. It acts as a standard path light and as an uplighter - if placed beneath trees the effect is amazing! LED bulbs are accommodated.

Follow us @ludmagazine

READER’S CHOICE - LIGHTING It is available in heights of 400mm or 600mm and diameters of 90mm or 110mm so the option to mount on gate posts or decking is very feasible. There is 240v mains, or 12v plug and play power options meaning full versatility for installer and client. It’s rare in the 12v Garden Lighting world to find a path light of such high quality, and with 12v, installation couldn’t be easier. The 3m cable supplied is capped with a 2 pin plug which simply plugs directly into a transformer (or splitter if multiple fittings are installed), the transformer plugs into a mains socket and it is ready to go. 12v systems are very versatile and perfectly suited to outdoor settings being of low voltage. The 12v post light accommodates a replaceable LED MR16 which are available in a number of wattages and colours. It is often thought that low voltage lights are not as bright as mains voltage – this is not the case. Once an LED bulb is in, the use of a removable dichroic coloured lens can create amazing coloured effects. Coloured Dichroic lenses can really enhance the appearance of plants, trees and garden ornaments. Dichroic glass filters operate on a passive-reflective basis, reflecting

unused wavelengths while passing wanted portions of the spectrum. They are high in transmission which results in brighter, cleaner, saturated colours, compared to that of a standard plastic lens with colour films which often fade.

Their low cost and easy replacement makes experimentation with different colours an interesting prospect at an affordable price. Simply place between the 50mm MR16 / GU10 lamp and exterior glass lens of the fitting, secure with a spring clip and you have a coloured lamp. Change the coloured lens periodically to create eye catching and unique effects; a colour for every season. There is also a bespoke Photocell dusk to dawn version ideal for security and energy conscious users. The sensor automatically turns the light on when darkness is detected (dusk) and automatically turns off again when it detects light (dawn). Essex based developers MKing and Sons Ltd specified the Airlite for a midlands customer, and simply says ‘Installation of new Airlite garden lights to replace old existing path lights gave the garden a massive lift with their smart appearance and quality – the customer was so happy with the result!’

LIGHTING

SHINE WITH SUBTLETY

AND WITH STRENGTH

‘I don’t want it to look like a runway, or Blackpool Illuminations’! Phrases that still emerge whenever landscape lighting is discussed. However, amazing effects can be achieved with the right lights. Paired with layout and the other main factors of a design, lights can become part of the entire creative process; not just a rushed addition or necessary afterthought. Nowadays, more Designers and Landscapers are being asked to source and even install outdoor lights on projects. Although this can be a different area of understanding, taking on the responsibility to illuminate a garden, and implementing this, can be hugely gratifying for all parties. Like other technology, many designs on offer now are versatile, and have more than one application. Sometimes a strong light is required, and there should be no fear of specifying a powerful light when necessary, for example to uplight a large tree with a floodlight, or give security and better access to a dark area with high output LED bollards. However, for ‘accent’ or ‘ornamental’ lighting, an element of subtlety is favoured. ‘Glare’ should be avoided wherever possible. This is a common, undesirable consequence of using lights that are simply too bright, not positioned correctly or do not direct light. Several factors reduce

80

www.landud.co.uk

this problem, to be considered at product buying stage.

Here are some helpful hints for Anti-Glare Lighting: • Purchase fittings that accommodate a replaceable LED light source. This way, if illumination is too bright, try a bulb with a lesser lumen output. If the LED bulb ever fails, save a major reinstall by simply changing the lamp rather than the whole fitting. • Try removable accessories such as frosted glass lenses or honeycomb louvred filters. Frosted lenses with a spotlight, soften the beam effectively producing more of a ‘wash’ effect. Using a honeycomb filter will modify and diffuse a straight ‘spot’ beam. • Use adjustable fittings for choice and direction. It’s best to use fittings that adjust to shine at various angles such as Spikelights for added versatility and to avoid glare. • Larger professional path lights and bollards should have louvres or slats in the head to direct light downwards. Some also have frosted diffusers. • Use Spreadlights - specialist lights that provide a glare-free nonpolluting pool of light for paths,

decks, terraces or low planting. The light source can be located under a ‘shade’ distinguishing them from other Path lights. • ‘Wash’ Walls for an even coverage and to define a space softly or create a backdrop. Incorporating all types of lighting including ‘anti-glare’ into your plans couldn’t be easier - Lumena Lights stock accessories including louvered filters and removable frosted lenses, with many lights available with either clear or frosted lens options dependent on effect required. Many Professional Spreadlights are available, including a fabulous new edition- the Pro Solar Halopost Path Light.
