A national sports facility in a historic landscape – the making of St George’s Park It’s been over a decade coming. But today, the National Football Centre at St George’s Park in Burton upon Trent is a truly world class destination for training and sporting facilities. A £100 million development set in 143ha of parkland, it’s the training home for Club England which runs all 24 England representative sides. It’s also an inspirational centre for coach education, a Hilton and Hampton hotel complex, a conferencing hub for business and sporting communities, a leading centre for sports medicine and science, and a training magnet for teams, individual players and athletes. Engineering and environmental consultancy Wardell Armstrong was selected by the FA to be the project landscape architects to support their vision for world class sporting facilities within a quintessential English parkland setting. With English football in the relative doldrums ever since the glory days of the 1966 World Cup, and the national team always seeming to be chasing the tail of more lavishly resourced countries, the FA had long cherished an ambition to create such a world class facility. So in 2001 they bought a large area of land in the historic landscape of Byrkley Park, a former home of the Bass brewing family in the ancient forest of Needwood. shape. But by 2010, work had started in earnest to build and bring to reality the vision of a national football centre to match anything anywhere in the world. The FA’s ambition was to see it completed and operational by the summer of 2012 – an extremely demanding programme with a construction period of only seventeen months. But as well as the time pressures, there were major landscaping and ecological challenges facing the designers. Since the demolition of the Victorian house in the 1950s, the landscape had fallen into a neglected state of land management. There were large areas of locally rare wood pasture with many mature and veteran trees. The site had also become home to large populations of protected species including great crested newts, lapwing and golden plover and 297 great crested newts, 182 smooth newts, 57 frogs and 7,157 toads were trapped and carefully moved to their new habitat before works could commence. Would it be possible to integrate a very large new development together with all the necessary earthworks and infrastructure into such a sensitive historical landscape in a way that would sustain the heritage and wildlife habitats of the park? was selected by the FA in 2010 to be the project landscape architects as part of the multidisciplinary

design team. They worked closely with the design build contractor Bowmer and Kirkland (to whom the design team were novated), and the lead architects Redbox Design Group. Shared commitment These close working relationships played a critical role in recognising the sensitivity of the landscape and the importance of carefully maintaining the setting. Ecological mitigation was a high priority at the design stage and throughout the contract period, both in terms of translocation and the protection of areas and species. Despite the inevitable rigorous cost control on a project of such scale and complexity, there was a shared commitment to maintain high quality landscaping throughout, without letting it suffer as a late element of the project. Wardell Armstrong was responsible for the development of the landscape strategy and management. This included biodiversity mitigation for the whole estate as well as the design of the external works and planting. The landscape design involved the creation of the hotel the re-establishment of parkland pasture, and new articulate routes and allow the site to be fully accessible. The development has been achieved with the removal of only six trees, all of poor quality, while ensuring the protection of the many mature and veteran trees. An early task was to mitigate for the migrant population of golden plover. As part of the landscape design the Wardell Armstrong team created a new habitat with a 1500m² lakeside beach area, replacing a large area of rough stone. They also created a new lake to the front of the hotel with marginal aquatic planting as part of a SUDS surface water management system to allow drainage from hard surfaces. As well as serving as an attractive feature for visitors as they approach the hotel complex, the new lake attracts biodiversity and wildlife. An even greater challenge was to ensure that the large numbers of existing trees were protected. Many of these are mature, including seventeen oaks of veteran status Bowmer and Kirkland took a highly responsible approach in accepting the importance of outset. Wardell Armstrong contributed to induction talks to site operatives on the sensitivity of the natural succeeded in ensuring that no land was disturbed within the root spread – a particular challenge when one copse was within only twenty metres of a planned building.
28/02/2013 21:37:40
Acorn regeneration areas were established and fenced be used as native stock, while new blocks of native planting served to increase the age diversity of the estate. 2450 new trees were planted in total. The natural undulations of the parkland landscape are steel architecture of the new national football centre, science facilities including hydrotherapy, rehabilitation and altitude chamber, and the main sports twelve court sports hall and gymnasium. Externally, eleven pitches including a replica Wembley pitch with pitches, sand training and rehabilitation areas complete the world class facilities. Working closely with the architects from Redbox Design Group to make sure that the external environment from the hotel courtyard outwards to the car parks and the parkland beyond, Wardell Armstrong was also thresholds. The centrepiece of the hotel complex is the formal courtyard with its patterned natural granite paving lawns, formal yew hedging and framed by a double line of box headed hornbeam underplanted with ivy. extensive use of natural stone for paving and retaining walls. Pedestrian circulation was carefully considered to achieve maximum accessibility on a sloping site, with steps kept to a minimum. A hierarchy of broad granite-paved paths connects the buildings. Mastertint coloured asphalt in the car parks captures the colour of local natural gravels, while new planting is already softening the impact of the parking areas. Further into the estate, Breedon gravel provides informal paths through the landscaped areas. Polymeric rubber crumb surfacing - again colour matched to the locally sourced natural gravel - was used on the footpaths around the sports building and between changing rooms and pitches to allow players to walk around in studded boots.
permanent pasture, the management of a local rare the planting of replacement parkland trees to improve the age diversity on the estate. This has involved sourcing specimen oaks of Midland provenance. Wardell Armstrong Tel: 0845 111 7777 Fax: 0845 111 8888 Email: info@wardell-armstrong.com www.wardell-armstrong.com

After a few minutes drying any excess is simply brushed off and rinse – Job done! NCC Streetscape Ltd., the exclusive UK Distributors of this German engineered mortar, say that their customers tell them that is the highest performance paving grout of its type and it is particularly suitable for many professional patios and DIY jobs around the UK because with vdw 840plus there is no waiting for newly paved surfaces to dry out after rain or morning dew, and no waiting for a good weather forecast to even begin the pointing works.

It is easily installed by wet slurry application using additional water and it selfcompacts into the joints – So there is also no waiting for dry conditions or a good weather forecast! As a result, when Councils and their Consultants make an evaluation of possible jointing solutions, including the costs of the materials and the labour, plus the potential for any delays due to the weather, which can also have huge time and cost implications, then vdw 855 Paving Joint Mortar is by far the most cost effective. This is even more so for work to be carried out in winter, as it can be installed without delays in the wet and at low temperatures.

Multiple references are required and acted upon, plus an onsite visit will be conducted with on-going quality spot checks. The scheme is a win-win for the firm and contractor, but crucially ensures a well marketed, trustworthy combined package of both product and service for the customer. Jacksons Show Gardens Design Competition 2013 register your interest... Following the success of the previous three years show gardens project, Jacksons are pleased to announce, the popular design competition aimed at garden designers and landscape architects, will run for a fourth year. The competition has attracted attention from many in the industry who would like their design brought to life at the fencing company’s HQ in Kent, and with two previous year’s winners going on to achieve subsequent success as RHS Gold medal winners, this could be interpreted as a sign that the Jacksons project is a ‘hotbed’ of burgeoning talent. The project will be run along the similar lines to the previous years, but with a slightly changed format to keep it fresh, with some distinctly different design challenges. Budget for the show gardens will come from Jacksons: fencing materials and garden structures will be supplied by Jacksons. There is scope within the scheme for original designs for furniture and structures to the designer’s specification to be made from Jacksons materials. Partner suppliers will supply hard landscaping materials, plants and other objects. To find out more and see the previous year’s show gardens log on to: jacksons-fencing.co.uk/show-gardens To register your interest, please email: louise.tomlin@jacksons-fencing.co.uk with your contact details and a brief outline of your credentials. Please state if you are a student and where you are studying.

A garden that speaks a unique language, Lot 800 is a place where the present is reminiscent of the past, where the concept behind the design is directly connected to the Levantine design basics and resembles the prevailing garden style of the region, hence allowing the visitor to relate to the traditional elements as well as identify and interact with the identity of the surrounding. using two key words: Modernizing and Revitalizing. Modernizing the existing traditional architectural elements including the ‘Birkeh’ (water basin) and ‘Aricheh’ (pergola) and revitalizing them in such a way that cultural heritage is respected but new life is breathed into it rendering the existing surprising yet familiar. These private town gardens are little seclusions, pockets of refuge in a busy city. The visitor is greeted by a modernized series of water basins and is then accompanied by an axis of citrus trees to a central plaza at the end of which sit two vertical gardens, enhancing the perspective effect these mineral and organic corridors seem to have. As for the spatial quality, the space is designed with the aim of creating personalized enclosures in which each garden in the series of front-yards is experienced differently whilst continuing to be an extension of the architecture, and hence becoming the added value of these rental ground-

Japanese Knotweed Control Japanese knotweed needn’t be feared, provided organisations take time to choose their treatment specialists responsibly, according to Japanese Knotweed Control’s joint managing director, David Layland. As knotweed contamination has become more widely recognised, one unfortunate consequence has been that everyone suddenly has a view on how it should best be treated. How then do clients choose a reputable and reliable specialist when the marketplace is awash with hundreds of so-called industry ‘experts’? The starting point is to always thoroughly check a company’s industry accreditations and legislative compliance before appointment. One critical consideration is that contractors should be Amenity Assured and BACCS registered which means they have the minimum requirements to work and preferably hold ISO 9001 accreditation from the British Standards Institute which is UKAS approved. Another minimal requirement should be some credible warranty backed insurance cover on all work undertaken. This specialist work does require a bespoke insurance policy that avoids any serious liabilities if a treatment programme goes wrong. With knotweed treatment often involving the use of heavy machinery and commercial herbicides, up to date health and safety compliance is also essential. SAFEContractor accreditation, for example, a process which involves the annual assessment of a company’s health and safety arrangements and risk management, can be another good indicator of a professional company. To summarise, always check a company has compliance to the very latest technical, environmental and health and safety standards, has a current dated Amenity Assured certificate to show standards have been maintained and, for added assurance, be prepared to ask your treatment specialist for references and testimonials from satisfied customers.

Marl LED lighting feature adds Sparkle to The Alnwick Garden Marl International today announced the completion of a £100,000 project to install feature LED lighting at The Alnwick Garden, one of the UK’s top visitor attractions adjoining Alnwick Castle, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. The Alnwick Garden is a public attraction founded by the Duchess of Northumberland and the new LED lighting installation conceived by the Duchess herself. designed to focus on the central area of the garden, the Hornbeam Arbours and the Grand Cascade, which enter the garden. There is also lighting all the way up the central part of the garden from the steps, through to the dramatic archway at the very top of the garden, which can just be seen from the Pavilion area, about 200m away.

Marl LED technology is highly reliable, offers full intelligent control over and environmentally friendly when compared with traditional light sources.” Commenting on her decision to appoint Marl, the Duchess added, “Following my visit to Marl in July 2012, I could see that they were an exceptional company. Not every engineering company has a collection of six grand pianos on site! I was impressed by their capability, expertise and approach. The enthusiasm, energy and creativity of its young team was inspiring, and the fact that they are located together on a single site convinced me that they would work together effectively to realise this very complicated project. November the system was ready to be switched on,

of the system, and to provide a wide variety of lighting styles including mood lighting for special events. Marl integrated its hardware with ‘Colour-Tramp’ DMX based software control, provided by London based Artistic Licence, acknowledged industry experts. ‘ColourTramp’ allows the user to literally ‘paint with coloured light’, record and then play back a programme of lighting control sequences. Sparkle has a 60 colour lighting programme enabling literally millions of possible lighting combinations, allowing for unique corporate events, themed wedding parties tailored to the bride and groom, as well as a magical evening experience for all visitors. The Alnwick Garden Sparkle lighting installation relies entirely on LED lighting technology. According to Rawlinson, “The Marl lighting system at The Alnwick and task lighting is not required. Existing conventional longer needed and ruined the effect.” Commenting on the environmental impact of the system, he continued, “It is hard to quantify how much energy would be needed to power a similar system built using other technologies, but as a general rule an and associated hardware and electronic control will save between 20% and 50%, but it can be more. For example, LEDs can be switched on and off instantly, which allows them to be controlled using pre-set timers or to respond to many types of sensors, creating further opportunities to save power.” For more information, please contact: Marl International Limited, Marl Business Park, Ulverston, Cumbria, LA12 9BN, UK. The landscape plan has ensured the Cheshire Oaks site is a more biodiverse site than prior to development, including a wider number of species of plant than in the original landscape. 228 new trees have been planted within a total of approximately 12,000 square metres of landscape planting. A re-landscaped swale to complement the local sustainable urban drainage system with a robust monitoring and maintenance schedule was also introduced. To support the architect’s design and M&S’s biodiverse ethos, Greenleaf provided a number of products that ensured the success of the landscaping part of the project. The Arborguy tree anchoring system was used for the large trees on the site together with the Root Rain Urban irrigation system. Landscape architect Robert Myers returns to the Chelsea Flower Show with a design for Brewin Dolphin. Landscape architect Robert Myers returns to the Chelsea Flower Show with a design for Brewin Dolphin. The garden is crisp, modernist and based on L- shaped forms, understated and elegant but still a gardener’s garden, full of what are essentially habitat-inducing British native species used in a thought provoking contemporary way. The plant list is varied but neither excessive nor intimidating for those visitors who might be inspired to replicate sections of Robert’s sublime planting. The pinks sit alongside cobalt blues, foiled by wisps of Deschampsia cespitosa softened beautifully by lush green topiary cushions of Buxus sempervirens. The planting shows how one can use a native palate in a way that is both ornamental and elegant. Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Nivea’, a clump-forming long stalked herbaceous perennial with leafy stems bearing delicately beautiful bell shaped Campanula rotundifolia (Harebell) is equally graceful but even more delicate with slender

stems, so weak that the entire plant bends over to reveal pretty nodding bell shaped clusters of lavender of the garden planted with the delicate but striking wild galdioli, Gladious illyricus and the purple pink spires of . Robert has also chosen to push into the Chelsea Flower Show limelight, a highly rare British native currently in serious decline, Anacamptis morio, the greenparallel greenish veins on each side of the hood formed create a fabulous contrast to the native lady’s mantle, Alchemilla xanthochlora. The garden will feature some tall plants including the striking white Digitalis purpurea ‘Alba’ and spirelike Verbascum thaspus (Mullein), famous for its long the garden, Robert has selected British native Armeria maritima (Sea thrift). On the Brewin Dolphin garden they will be planted amongst taller perennials such as the delightful dark stemmed angelica Angelica sylvestris ‘Vicar’s Mead’ and the delicate but striking Sanguisorba (Great Burnet). Structure is given to the garden by rarely used pleached Acer Campestre (Field Maple) that form the L shaped boundary around the front of the garden and white blossomed multi-stemmed rowans (Sorbus aucuparia) to soften and create vertical punctuation. A canal which originates from a water wall at the rear of the garden adds gentle sound and movement to this tranquil space. The planting is subtle and Robert has chosen each plant with a distinct purpose in mind, be it for colour, scent or structure or in the case of Lonicera periclymenum (honeysuckle) which will scramble over the slatted boundary wall, for all three! Shrubs selected for form
include the beautiful berry wielding Viburnum opulus which will be planted along the side boundary with Corylus avellana) and spindle (Euonymus europeus). The sumptuous pillows of box always attract attention at the Chelsea Flower Show and in this garden they are used to soften, add height, structure and draw the eye toward the centre of the garden and the water feature. Rosa rugosa ‘Alba’ (white hedgehog rose) is the only rose that will feature and will be planted through the boundary shrubs. Robert has selected several of his favourite herbaceous perennials to feature in this garden, some old English classics such as cow parsley and angelica (Anthriscus sylvestris ‘Ravenswing’ and Angelica sylvestris ‘Vicars Mead’) both excellent at providing height and a degree of screening courtesy of the dreamy wisp like clumps. (Blue sedge) will inhabit the sunken area and surround the pillows of box forming wonderful texture and form. Natural and sustainable materials are used throughout the garden. The path is of York stone and the 3.5 meter high timber canopy offers shade to a dining area. The right hand wall stands 2 metres high and is made from panels of plywood sculpted in relief with a repeating 60’s style motif. The overall feel of the garden will be that of an urban setting with both hard and soft elements working together to create structure and a sense of security in a relaxing, convivial space. www.robertmyers-associates.co.uk www.brewin.co.uk

Traditionally, the value of green spaces has been underestimated and the true cost to society of failing to sustain and improve them has not been fully appreciated. But during the last decade there has been a shift in the wellbeing agenda towards promoting healthy lifestyle behaviour and choices. There has also been greater recognition of the role the outdoor urban environment can play in this process, with a number of studies providing clear evidence of the true worth - both economically and socially - of well-used green spaces to communities. As an environmental regeneration charity, protecting and transforming green spaces is a cause Groundwork UK has consistently championed during its 30-year history. Groundwork’s activity comprises three main strands; promoting greener living and working, creating better living spaces and improving people’s employment and life prospects. Groundwork is passionate about helping people to work collectively to make their surroundings greener, safer and healthier and to get more involved in decisions that affect the quality of their neighbourhoods. And the scope of its work is far-reaching. In 2011/12, Groundwork helped improve or maintain 40million metres squared of land, planted 60,000 trees, supported 450,000 days of volunteer action and engaged with 2,000 community groups. The charity also helped almost 13,000 people to gain skills, Groundwork works with statutory bodies, major private sector partners and fellow charities to deliver these projects, worth around £135 million a year. Some of its major initiatives have included working with Marks & Spencer, Cadbury, Britvic and Dulux to transform bleak spaces into ones for use by communities. We want to change places and change lives, and we see green spaces as central to this goal. The social and economic case for effectively using green space is backed by clear evidence, which Groundwork urges decision-makers to note when planning future towns and cities. Transforming and protecting these spaces is key to the work of Groundwork, so that these valuable assets can add real value to communities across the UK.
