JCA - Branching Out Across the Globe. Not many firms can list the London 2012 Olympics organisers, the British Museum, English Heritage, Cambridge University and National Parks around the world among their satisfied customers. But tucked away in a converted mill in Yorkshire, the expertise of a team of arboricultural consultants has earned their business a world-class reputation. The firm is also at the forefront of work to protect trees’ health. JCA is currently trialling a treatment to fight bleeding canker disease and sudden oak death which are sweeping across the country. Since it was established, JCA’s work has included helping select a site for the 2012 Olympic swimming pool, developing a method of getting the Chinese Terracotta Army exhibition safely into the British Museum without damaging important heritage trees and advising national parks in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Anyone needing advice on development close to trees, trees on their properties or on managing trees and woodlands should contact JCA for friendly advice and a quote, no matter how large or small the job. To find out more about JCA and its many services contact its offices in Barkisland, Yorkshire, on 01422 376335, e-mail info@jcaac.com or go to www.jcaac.com
AberSustain contains the smallest leaved white clover, AberAce†. This compact clover leaf blends well to any amenity setting, retaining quality look and feel, whilst its high stolon density fixes nitrogen to help the sward feed itself and making it low maintenance. Its white clover root systems improve soil structure and can help to overcome problems of soil compaction.

NOTTS SPORT’S TUFTED CRICKET SURFACES COME OUT ON TOP IN INDEPENDENT TESTS
WOODSCAPE STREET FURNITURE INSTALLED AT QUEEN ELIZABETH OLYMPIC PARK.
BILLY GOAT JUST EATS UP LONG GRASS, SHRUBS AND SMALL TREES – IN FACT MOST THINGS
Tufted synthetic turf cricket surfaces are nearly twice as durable as woven ones, according to new independent analysis based on the British Standard test used by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
One year on from London’s triumphant Olympic Games the area is being transformed into the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with Phase 1 of the development: The North Park, opening recently to mark the anniversary of the games.
Landowners, farmers and foresters clearing large areas of undergrowth, including saplings up to 5cm diameter, can now access the largest and most powerful range of commercial cutting and clean-up equipment available in the UK.
After being subjected to rigorous abrasion testing, Notts Sport’s leading ECB-approved cricket systems – NottsGrass NG12 and NG7 – had half the mass loss percentage of a woven surface which was also tested.
Woodscape, a North-West firm of hardwood street furniture specialists, has designed and manufactured a suite of bespoke timber furniture for the project, in accordance with the LLDC Inclusive Design Standards. These standards require furniture to be of the highest quality, have a clear purpose, contribute to uncluttered spaces and the easy movement of people through the space. Products supplied include slatted picnic tables, special curved seats with backrests and also lounger style seating in a range of sizes to suit the scheme.
The Billy Goat products from Henton & Chattell’s 300 strong dealer network are available in almost every corner of the UK. There is no job too tough for these robust, American manufactured equipment.
Notts Sport Chairman Shaun Patrick said: “The results of this independent test process prove what we have believed all along – that woven surfaces simply can’t compete with the durability of a high-calibre tufted pitch.” Further information is available at www.nottssport.co.uk or by calling 01455 883730.
THE TREE AND WOODLAND COMPANY EXPANDS TEAM TO MEET INCREASED DEMAND. The Tree and Woodland Company has further expanded its team, recruiting Richard O’Shea as a new Senior Arboriculturalist. The company, which offers tree support and advice for landowners, developers and architects, has made the appointment to meet increasing levels of work across the UK. Richard will focus on Tree and Woodland’s historic landscape and development site services, alongside its tree surveying, hazard tree and advisory projects.

TREATED SOFTWOOD DECKING MEETS ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETICS AT MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT. The Wigmore Street development in London was designed as a mixed use development. The project combines retail space on the ground floor with office use, and the residential properties to the south of the development satisfy the planning requirements for Westminster. John Brash was approached to find a solution for the roof terraces and outdoor walkways, as the originally specified product was not available.
Richard is an experienced arboriculturalist who also has a background in tree contracting and local authority tree preservation work. He specialises in BS5837 development and planning related projects and is experienced in tree inspections and risk analysis using VTA method and tree inventory software.
John Brash provided the solution with JB Antislip Plus® Classic. This is a slow grown European softwood, treated with a brown pigment to give a darker appearance. This enabled the aesthetics of the decked area to be delivered but using a softwood product with FSC accreditation.

ZAUN LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE ANTIBALLISTIC NOISE-REDUCING RECYCLED PLASTIC FENCING A fencing system made from recycled waste plastics that can soak up flying fragments while deflecting noise has been developed by perimeter systems manufacturer Zaun. Zaun has installed its DBS system for the first time at Fresh Wharf, a former brown-field industrial site in Barking, to stop the estate having to regularly replace a bus shelter which was previously being shattered by stone chips thrown up by passing vehicles on the adjacent A406 North Circular Road. Zaun integrated DBS onto its market-leading Duo fencing for the Fresh Water Estate in Barking. Estate manager Flavia Jokic said: ‘We were delighted with the end solution. The complete package of protection from stone chips thrown up by vehicles, superb noise reduction and an attractive and robust solution simply wasn’t available anywhere else.’ Further information is available at www.zaun.co.uk

ARTIFICIAL TURF – FROM THE GROUND UP
Robbie Craven, Head of Research and Development at TigerTurf UK, provides an insight into the considerations that “Whether we’re looking at an open recreational space for a community football club, or an elite level tennis academy, the behavioural characteristics of the surface will need to be considered from the outset. “Performance and safety considerations also need to be taken into account. The use of shock pads in these turf systems varies depending on the function of the turf system, but in certain sports such as Rugby, Hockey and cross code surfaces, it can be vital to the player performance and the safety of the surface. There are many shock pad options available on the market but the addition of a shock pad will increase the project’s cost. Historic landscapes expert revives ‘hidden gem’ Swiss Garden Cheshire’s specialist historic landscape consultancy Chris Burnett Associates is playing a lead role in the revival of the ‘hidden gem’ Swiss Garden in Bedfordshire – a rare survival of a Regency ‘Picturesque style’ garden One of England’s most delightful historic gardens, it was created in the 1820s by Lord Ongley as a Swiss idyll within Old Warden Park. Later the nine acre garden was bought by the industrialist Joseph Shuttleworth and is now owned and managed by the Shuttleworth Trust. A major restoration is being undertaken with a £2.8m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) with match funding provided by the Shuttleworth Trust. The three year long project will see the repair and conservation of the Garden’s 13 listed buildings and ornamental structures including the Swiss Cottage, the Indian Kiosk, the Grotto and Fernery and ornate ironwork bridges along with a comprehensive programme of landscape restoration work.
Robyn Llewellyn, Head of HLF East of England, said: “The Swiss Garden, previously something of a hidden gem, is now on the road to becoming much better known and appreciated. We’re pleased to be supporting plans to restore a number of its wonderfully distinctive features.”
Chris Burnett Associates (CBA) is one of few UK practices with the appropriate specialist landscape expertise to meet the demands of this ambitious scheme and was responsible for drawing up and letting the landscape contract including £400,000 landscape element of the restoration will address the restoration of all the principle 19th century components of the garden that make it such a ‘magical’ place including paths, boundary fencing and extensive tree and shrub planting The project is being coordinated and managed by Liz Sutton of Ruby Tiger and CBA is now working closely with the building conservation architects Chris Garrand Consultancy of Luton, amongst others, and experienced through the plan’s delivery. On completion the gardens are expected to provide a major public visitor attraction aircraft collection at Shuttleworth
26 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 7
With many years’ experience in the sensitive restoration of ancient parkland and gardens, CBA includes St Giles Park at Wimborne, Dorset - the ancestral home of the Earl of Shaftesbury – and Lancashire’s famous Stonyhurst College among its clients. CBA principal consultant Chris Burnett said: “The Swiss Garden is an exciting project with particular challenges. It is extraordinary that they were able to concentrate so much architectural and horticultural interest into a relatively small area. The key to the design was the balance between space and enclosure, light and shade , building or ornament and foliage’ “A bare earth approach was never adopted as an appropriate policy for the garden’s restoration. There’s a magical quality to the garden and we had to ensure we did not destroy its ‘genus locii’ in the process. It is a remarkable green, historic oasis and we are really delighted to be able to contribute to its renaissance for the enjoyment of future generations.” For further infromation visit our website www.chrisburnettassociates.co.uk

As the problems of non-native invasive plants such as Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant in recent years, the marketplace has become awash of which simply don't have the necessary equipment,

INNSA will seek to restore the professional image of its industry by developing a membership that can demonstrate continued competence and best practice in eradicating invasive species. Registration with INNSA provides members with a recognised accreditation supported by a comprehensive insurance backed guarantee scheme, but only after companies have gone through a strict application process. You can now enjoy up to 35 minutes of continuous operation on a single charge from the powerful Li-ion battery. Our savE™ energy saving mode optimises run time and lets you get the most out of every charge.
The T536LiXP and the 536LiXP are two lightweight, high-performance Husqvarna battery powered chainsaws. The T536LiXP is a professional arborist only, top handle machine with a high chain speed and petrol performance. Features include a flip-up tank cap and a second belt eyelet making it quick and easy to connect the saw to a climbing harness, a simple to operate, intuitive keypad and an effective inertia-activated chain brake. The 536LiXP back handle version is ideal for commercial use, agriculture and utility applications. A powerful brushless motor delivers superb petrol performance and a maximum chain speed of 20m/s, which is reduced to 15m/s in savE™ mode to prolong battery runtime in less demanding conditions. The 536LiL and 536LiR are commercial grass trimmers from the Husqvarna battery series. These machines are low-weight, high performance with powerful brushless motors for heavy duty commercial use as well as agriculture, horticulture and utility applications. Two way rotation means the rotational direction of the trimmer head can be changed at the push of a button, directing grass away from walkways or out of bunkers on a golf course. The two machines differ as the 536LiL features a loop handle in contrast to the 536LiR’s bike handle. The latter also comes with a Balance 35B harness for improved comfort and ergonomics. The BLi 110, 36V / 3,0Ah Li-Ion battery is interchangeable between all Husqvarna battery products, meaning you can switch from your chainsaw to your trimmer quickly and with ease. Recommended with the BLi 110 battery is the QC 330, 330W / 100 to 240 V rated quick charger to get the best results in the shortest time.
New for 2014 The Husqvarna back pack battery models BLi 520X and BLi 940X are for those who want to work all day without the need to recharge. Your battery chainsaw, trimmer and hedge trimmer can all be powered by the back pack batteries making these a versatile all-day worker. Perfect ergonomics are supplied through the adjustable height/pivoting hip belt and shoulder harness. Connection to the machine is through a specially weighted adapter to ensure machine balance so that when in use with the back pack it is not affected. The adapter also features a battery status indicator. The Husqvarna BLi 520X and BLi 940X are both high performance 36V LiIon batteries. The BLi 520X has energy of 520Wh, a battery capacity of 14,4 Ah and a charging time of 130min (with QC 330) with the weight being 5.9 kg. If all day operation is what you need the BLi 940X boasts an energy of 940, a 26,1 Ah battery capacity, a 235min charging time (with QC330) and weighs 6.7kg. Husqvarna in addition to the BLi520X and BLi940X back pack batteries launches the new high capacity 4.2 ah BLi50 integrated battery. The BLi150 gives 40% more run time yet with the same weight as the current BLi 110 (3.0 Ah) battery. Husqvarna now offer the complete battery solution with both integrated and back pack options to suit and job. Also new for 2014 is the Husqvarna 536Li HD60X professional battery hedge trimmer. This model features a pivoting rear handle and petrol equivalent performance. The 536Li HD60X can be powered by either the new BLi150 (4.2 Ah) integrated battery or either of the new back pack batteries. A high torque motor and 4000 1/min blade speed gives excellent cutting performance. The 536Li HD60X has a cutting length of 60cm and a tooth opening of 30mm.

A new chapter in public paving One of the largest public libraries in Europe.
Pavers were selected to create a ‘red line’ to lead pedestrians into Centenary Square.
Combined with the different paver surface finishes, and the variation of laying patterns, the paved area maintains a sense of textural depth.
The largest public square in the heart of Birmingham.
At the heart of innovation. Aware of the need for paving as striking and as functional as the Library of Birmingham’s architectural design, Wienerberger’s Centenary Square paving was meticulously crafted and beautifully executed. Tel: 0161 491 8200 Web: www.wienerberger.co.uk
