ArborRaft System

The ArborRaft tree planting system offers the ideal growing scenario for newly planted trees in urban environments. The system includes a cellular raft structure that supports paving, whilst preventing compaction of the soil around the tree’s roots. The ArborRaft System spreads the load ensuring non-compaction of soils within the tree pit. Essential oxygen, water and nutrient circulation are improved with the ArborRaft system, creating a natural environment The ArborRaft System protects the tree’s root structure in urban settings where pedestrians, vehicles and heavy goods vehicles are present

gtSpecifier Team T: 01423 332 114

There is no requirement for deep tree pits with the ArborRaft system as root growth and development is normally within the upper zone of the tree pit. Simple installation and raft structure of the ArborRaft System avoids existing services and utilities. Quick to install

32 BALI Awards Landscape & Urban Design

Designing your outdoor environment

Welcome to 2015... In our first issue of 2015, we celebrate some glorious successes of 2014 as we look towards the challenges of the New Year. Congratulations from us all here at Landscape and Urban Design to each of the worthy nominees and winners of the BALI awards in December 2014 (P32-34). With so much talent to choose from, picking winners must have been excruciating! Special congratulations to Willerby Landscapes, who won the Grand Award for an unprecedented fifth time for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, South Park Plaza: Yet another testament to their ability to consistently transform illustrious design concepts into engaging, memorable spaces. We remember too, the insurmountable success of the poppy installation at Tower Bridge last year, demonstrating just how much impact simple and beautiful outdoor designs can have on us all. How wonderful that ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ will now be further commemorated with a tour of the UK (P36-37). We have some cracking exhibitions to look forward to in 2015 – BTME at the end of the month will showcase the very best of the turfing world 20th - 22nd January 2015 and of course, we are all looking forward to another successful Ecobuild 3rd – 5th March (P18-19) with those of you who will be exhibiting or attending. Be sure to come and see us at our stand S5002, where we as Official Media Partners, are looking forward to greeting you! I wish you the very best of successes into 2015 and would like to thank all of our contributors for welcoming me so warmly since I started at Landscape & Urban Design last year.

GRIFFIN GLASSHOUSES CELEBRATES GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY IN 2015

As one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of bespoke glasshouses it is not surprising that many of Griffin Glasshouses customers use theirs to house rare and unusual plants as well as at least one of the national collections. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the design of the first ever Griffin Glasshouse which was the work of David Griffin. The business he founded remains a family owned and managed concern based in Ropley near Winchester in Hampshire. “We design and construct glasshouses across the UK, Europe and further afield,” explained Griffin Glasshouses managing director and David Griffin’s daughter, Linda Lane. “Everything we produce is bespoke with the exception of our NGS - National Gardens Scheme - collection that is a range of specific, smaller structures. All the materials we use in the manufacturing process at our Ropley factory are of the highest quality and many of the features are specifically designed by us and unique to our brand. This includes our full length automated opening and ventilation system, the Victorian styled spandrels used in many of our glasshouses and the hidden rain water collection system 04 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 11

that can be channelled into underground storage tanks and pumped up for irrigation and watering.” All of the glasshouse frames are made from the highest quality, maintenance free aluminium which is electronically powder coated into any paint colour. All bolts and fixings are completely hidden. “We specifically match a wood look-alike finish so that our glasshouses appear to be traditional but have the very latest, low maintenance finish. We have, over the past five years, identified a growing trend for glasshouses with a Victorian design and the majority of our work is within this category,” added Linda. Although harking back to bygone days, Griffin Glasshouses greenhouses are thoroughly 21st century in design and maintenance. Many have highly decorative spandrels, steep pitches to roofs, narrow glass panes and high decorative finials at the ends of the ridge. This year, as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Griffin Glasshouses is launching a range of glasshouse work benches with Victorian-styled cast-aluminium legs and corner details. It is part of the company’s drive to generate maximum authenticity but without the high levels of maintenance associated with historic structures of this type. Linda explained: “An increasing amount of work is from gardeners having to replace comparatively modern wooden greenhouses that have simply rotted away. We regularly work with historic homes and gardens where they often have to either replace very old garden structures or simply build-on to existing ones whilst maintaining the style of the original.

“It is challenging and often unusual work. We have built glasshouses around large trees and created one with sufficient height and ventilation to ensure that the fresh air flowed over a mini mountain on which the owner grew Alpine plants. We regularly build them in gardens that open for the NGS”. All glasshouses in the NGS Collection are named after garden herbs – Sorrel, Thyme, Fennell, Sage and Rosemary and Griffin donates 5% of the proceeds to the charity. Each year the NGS opens almost 4000 private gardens in England and Wales and, from the proceeds, gives more than £2.5 million annually to cancer, nursing and gardening charities. They are available in any colour and have a unique capping system that insulates the glazing bars, reducing heat loss. Other features include automatic windproof ventilation, internally draining gutters, completely hidden fixings and a range of accessories: foldaway staging and shelving and internal water storage and pumping. Liz and Richard Ramsay, who open their Surrey garden at Nutfield for the NGS every second year, said: “In the garden at Little Priory, we had a Victorian glasshouse, sorely in need of repair. We could have replaced it with a timber structure but, instead, decided to do as the Victorians would have done: innovate. We liked the idea of Griffin’s aluminium frame. The new glasshouse looks as if it belongs in the garden – it even slopes down as the old one did. But the modern materials and design mean it will last long into the future and won’t require regular painting.” 2015 will see the return of Griffin Glasshouses to popular events including the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (19th to 23rd May - stand RHW32) and RHS Hampton Court Flower Show (30th June to 5th July). “It’s important for us to have a presence at industry leading shows, they enable us to showcase our new and existing products and more importantly, get in front of our potential customers. These shows always draw in huge crowds, its hard work but a lot of fun,” said Linda. onored by the NYC Design Commission with an Award for Excellence in Design in 2008 for integration of form, function and sustain- able practice, the new visitor center to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden establishes a visionary public interface between the city and the garden. The landscape’s central feature is the building’s living roof design, conceived as a seamless, inhabitable extension of the Garden that mergers landscape and

architecture and redefines physical and philosophical relationships between visitor and garden, exhibition and movement, culture and cultivation. NEW OTTERBINE FOUNTAIN IS A BIG ATTRACTION AT THE NOTTINGHAMSHIRE A new Otterbine 5HP aerating fountain formed part of the redevelopment plans for The Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club, just six miles from Nottingham city centre in the East Midlands, when new owners took over two years ago. The plans were put in place to take the club to the next level and included a new lake constructed next to the clubhouse to improve the appearance of the course. A water feature in the shape of an Otterbine Sunburst 5HP aerating fountain, which was installed by GlenFarrow, was added to the lake to create an attraction for guests and members.

Above: Course manager Pete Billings, centre, with Allan Williams, GlenFarrow, on the right and Otterbine’s Roger Lupton.

“The new owners wanted to raise the bar and, with a focus on weddings and functions, it was decided to add a 3,000 square metre lake with a fountain,” says course manager Pete Billings. “I was familiar with the Otterbine brand and in my opinion they are the market leaders for fountains. I had a look at other brands, but this was such a big job I knew I had to go with the one I could rely on and I knew Otterbine would be the most successful for the job. “I purposely chose a 5HP motor due to its ability to move 237 cubic metres of water per hour, which helps to ensure the lake remains clear and clean at the same time. It made sense to have a fountain that looks fantastic, but which serves a practical purpose, too. We’ve had it for a year, running pretty much constantly on a timer, and there’s been no algae.” For more information on Otterbine’s range of aerating fountains and how they can help improve water quality, contact distributor Lely UK on 01480 226948 or email turfcare.sales.uk@lely.com. CONDITIONER UNLOCkS pOTENTIAL OF pOOR qUALITY SOILS

Using a silicate colloid soil conditioner to promote plant growth can help landscapers to maximise the potential of manufactured, compacted and contaminated soils. That is according to Richard Brown, Amenity Sales Manager for Germinal, who recommends the use of a phosphate-based electrolyte fertiliser in all scenarios where poor soil quality presents a barrier to effective vegetation establishment. Getting plants to establish on the types of low-grade soils commonly associated with recently developed landscapes is a common problem. Manufactured, compacted and contaminated ground often lacks the soil structure and nutrient content to enable young seedlings to grow vigorously, while salt and heavy metal burdening at road verges can also result in lack lustre foliage. However, the use of a pre-seeding fertiliser and soil conditioner can help to combat many of these problems by improving soil structure and enhancing nutrient availability, as Richard Brown of Germinal explains. “Landscapers are regularly faced with the challenge of getting vegetation to grow in soil which is disadvantageous to viable plant

growth. By using an electrolyte based soil conditioner, low-grade soils can be improved, thereby allowing vegetation to thrive.” Containing sodium silicate and phosphate, Agrosil LR improves soil structure by forming large molecules of porous silicate gels or colloids. These colloids improve soil porosity and can also lock up heavy metals such as lead or cadmium, and can protect plants from fungal pathogens. Agrosil LR also enhances phosphate availability to plant roots, making the most nutrient deficient soils capable of supporting viable plant growth. “Young seedlings require very few nutrients other than phosphate,” Mr Brown continues. “Applying a top dressing at 35 to 50g/ m2 prior to seeding, or as an under-turf treatment at 100 to 120 g/m2, improves the structure of the soil and also provides the necessary nutrients for vegetation to grow in impoverished, manufactured and contaminated soils.” Agrosil LR has a 20% total phosphate content (as P2O5) and contains 36%

mainly reversibly soluble silicate. It has been shown to penetrate soil to 30cm where it activates root growth by creating water and air storage cells within the soil. This improves the capillary transport of water and increases the utilisation of nutrients by making more phosphate available and reducing the risk of salt shock. Agrosil LR also protects against fungal infections such as Fusarium, leaf spot and powdery mildew by promoting a strong increase of silicate in the leaf, preventing diseases from taking hold. The silicate gels also bond heavy metals so that they can no longer cause a toxic effect to plants. “Colloid soil conditioners are the ultimate pre-seeding fertilisers as they help to create plant-safe habitats,” Mr Brown adds. “Studies show that Agrosil LR can have a positive effect on plant growth for 10 years or more, and should therefore be used for every seedbed where soil quality is likely to otherwise be detrimental to plant growth.” Soils treated with Agrosil LR should be given a subsequent feed of N-P-K fertiliser 3-4 weeks later to maintain growth during the later stages of plant development. Agrosil LR is available from Germinal Seeds: www.germinalamenity.com

Bound Surfacing Durable All-Weather Pointing for Sandstone Paving

Granite Sett Paving Repointing for the Peace Gardens

The extensive terraces and multi-level patios around this prestige barn conversion were all created using an attractive combination of 60mm thick, random length, natural sandstone paving slabs, together with reclaimed granite setts. All of the pointing and grouting was carried out after the main construction and paving bedding work had finished when it was also during the winter months, mostly having to be done in November and December.

The natural stone paving through the Peace Gardens in Sheffield has been refurbished for Sheffield City Council using GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar. The natural stone paving was becoming loose and subject to damage due to the typical cracking and loss of strength problems associated with traditional and proprietary cement based jointing mortars that had all been tried without success.

GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Pointing from NCC Streetscape was the ideal material for this pointing work, as not only was it fast and non-staining to wet slurry apply, but it could also be applied during cold and wet weather, meaning there would be no weather delays on the project. This advanced epoxy resin bound sand based material then hardens quickly to allow access and use of the paved areas shortly afterwards.

The Council’s Engineers and their Contractor found the ideal solution was the unique; epoxy resin bound sand based, vdw 850 Paving joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape. This also enabled all of the work to be successfully completed and without having to completely close any areas of the gardens.

Two contrasting and complementary shades of the vdw 850 pointing, in stone grey and natural sand, were used to highlight and enhance the beauty of the natural stone.

Any visible damage was removed, the areas high pressure water jet cleaned, any loose stone setts rebounded in position and then the joints simply wet-slurry pointed with the vdw 850, which self-compacts into the joints. The surface is rinsed and then dry brushed-off and within a short period of time can be reopened for public access – also with no delays for cold or wet weather.

Solardome

It’s All In The Shape

22 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 11

Nowadays modern engineering techniques offer us more building options than ever before. One innovative construction model that gives people new opportunities is the glass geodesic dome, hailed by the American Institute of Architects as: “The strongest, lightest and most efficient means of enclosing space known to man”. To find out more we spoke to a cross section of latest-generation dome owners who worked with Hampshire based Solardome Industries to realise their visions. Here’s what we found out...

Building an Arctic Eco-home Norwegian couple Benjamin and Ingrid Hjertefolger’s eco-home near Bodo in the Arctic Circle, built using traditional materials like wood, sand, clay and straw, required a mighty barrier to protect it from the elements. To enable this Solardome Industries developed its new PRO system, which enabled them to create a 15 metre wide and 7.5 metre tall geodesic glass shield around the build. Benjamin said: “In my original plans the internal house was square with a rectangular greenhouse surrounding it. But after a while and some ‘googling’ we found Solardome Industries in the UK. It was then that we began planning for a round house instead.

“We have been blown away by the magnificence of the dome and the life it is helping us to lead. We all worked really hard to create our eco-friendly home, our dream, and our little sustainable bubble that supports our eco values.” Learning outside the classroom Like many schools across the country Norman Gate School in Andover, Hampshire, is working hard to provide outstanding outdoor learning opportunities for its students. In 2014 they commissioned a 6m diameter SOLARDOME Capella to help them achieve their objective of adding a dynamic and inspirational outdoor dimension to both curricular and pastoral activities.

Head Teacher Chris Gayler said: “The dome is a space that is very stimulating because it is so different. The children always feel like they are on a bit of an adventure when they go there. “It gives us an extra learning space that is very motivating and stimulating because it is so different. Sometimes it is timetabled and at other times it is simply open for the children to make their own. Being able to fit a whole class inside is definitely one of the advantages of this particular design.” Enjoying the garden

Dr Ross said: “I was at my wit’s end looking for a solution for my conservatory/ greenhouse problem. Then I saw an advert for the SOLARDOME Haven.” “For the space and strength of the structure I thought it was very favourable pricewise. But not only that, I thought it was a wonderful piece of architecture too.” You can find out more about these projects and others by visiting the Solardome Industries website at www.solardome.co.uk

Dr. Fiona Ross commissioned a 4.5m diameter SOLARDOME Haven for her new garden on a two hundred metre-high exposed hillside near Glasgow, where strong winds and heavy rain were a certainty.

HARD LANDSCApE – DESIGNING THE FUTURE At Ecobuild, the trade association Interpave focuses on the transformative power of inspired hard landscape in urban regeneration as well as opportunities for innovative design with water, enabled by concrete block permeable paving. Sustainable drainage (SuDS) and concrete block permeable paving are essential to help fight flooding. But they should also form an integral part of inspired urban designs, which government now acknowledges with its approach to implementation using the planning system. Concrete block permeable paving is uniquely placed to play a key role by reducing, attenuating and treating rainwater runoff near the surface while providing completely level, well drained and slipresistance surfaces accessible to all. But its real strength is an ability to remove water-borne pollution offering a gradual supply of treated water that can be exploited for harvesting, ecology and – particularly – innovative landscape design. As a recent RIBA report comments: “For too long, we have been designing water out of our towns

24 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 11

and cities when we should have been designing it in” – and permeable paving gives us a unique opportunity to do just this. Human Scale Interpave also showcases the latest, innovative hard landscape designs with all types of precast concrete paving and kerbs. Here, distinct, modular units and designed variations in colour, texture and shape can break up areas giving visual interest and a human scale not possible with monotonous, formless materials such as asphalt. Interpave manufacturers continue to develop new products, moving away from simple, regular patterns and colours to meet current demands in urban design. Typifying this approach is the regeneration of east London’s Brownfield Estate, incorporating listed, iconic high-rise blocks designed by ‘brutalist’ architect Ernő Goldfinger in the late 60s. PRP Landscape’s design aims to unify disparate elements of the site using a simple palette of hard landscape materials, developing a language that unites the neighbourhood. Wherever

possible, multi-use streets and spaces are developed - bold and contemporary in character, using robust and high quality elements. Exemplary Scheme Precast concrete feature paving announces estate entrances and key buildings. Here, concrete flags in strong colours are arranged in bands to create a bold linear feel. Then, throughout the scheme, silver-grey concrete setts - with enhanced granite surface adding sparkle - highlight footways, while charcoal setts identify private amenity space. This exemplary scheme highlights the transformative power of good landscape design and the potential of precast concrete paving. A case study on this and other projects, and guidance on issues ranging from Sustainability to SuDS, can be downloaded via the Interpave information resource at: www.paving.org.uk. Find out more at the Interpave stand N6075 on the Concrete Pavilion (next to the North Arena).

Enhancing the landscape with sustainable structures From funky to functional CTS Bridges provide a design, build and installation service for bespoke landscape structures. Our in-house design team can take a clients aspirations and create a design that meets their aesthetic requirements whilst being usable for the general public. CTS built and installed the FSC accredited timberwork at the Ecology Park at Mile End Park, Tower Hamlets. The balustrading, decking and bespoke timberwork creates a decorative and functional space for watching inner city wildlife. The use of rustic timber brings the country to the middle of the city.

A 91m long boardwalk curves around the balancing ponds at the Wixams Greenway development in Buckinghamshire. By adding bridges and decking, a functional element has been transformed into a recreational facility.

Installed by CTS Bridges at Piccadilly Basin, London this hardwood structure forms a mooring and landing for canal barges. Cleverly designed tree pits bring an unexpected dimension to the deck and the integral lighting provides the finishing touch.

THE ECOLOGY pARk Linked to the Play arena by a canal side path, the Ecology Park showcases a magnificent new lake complex; a wind turbine (pdf 7kb) and an earth sheltered building (pdf 9kb) - the Ecology pavilion. These new features mean that the ecology park is already home to rare orchids, moths and spiders and its trees, grassland and lakes are proving to be a home for water birds and increasing populations of dragon and damsel flies. Two remnants of the park’s history as a former neighbourhood of terraced homes still exist in the park - the Palm Tree pub still sits in the centre of the park offering an opportunity for a quiet drink and the elegant homes of residents in Haverfield Road provide a welcome into the park from Grove Road. The Mile End Park Rangers use the opportunities provided by the park landscape and links to the Regents Canal to study nature. The park buildings and wind turbine also provide opportunities to look at issues of energy conservation and generation. The Centre will also become a base for a volunteering programme aimed at continuously improving the biodiversity of the park and facilities for users. An Ecology Forum representing the Friends of Mile End Park, local residents and interest groups meets to consider the parks maintenance and development and its continuous improvement to provide opportunities for education and participation in environmental activities.

Sustainability When the park was designed sustainability principles such as reducing waste and consumption of resources during the construction process were considered. Simple things like preserving park features and re-using them where they did not impact upon having a coherent design for users; reducing the amount of material that had to moved and using it on site; thinking about how the energy and water needs of the park could be provided from sustainable sources; thinking about how the design of buildings could reduce heat loss and make maximum use of solar gain. www.towerhamlets.gov.uk

NEW PitchEs For WolvErhamPtoN acadEmy A Wolverhampton academy is enjoying two brand new multipurpose sports pitches installed by ETC Sports Surfaces using city sports fencing specialist Zaun’s products.

The AGP is ideal for private, club and academy use as it needs very little maintenance throughout the year and is less slippery after rain.

The new Multi Use Games Area with hockey tarmac and larger floodlit 3G Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) give students at the North East Wolverhampton (NEW) Academy on Marsh Lane, Fordhouses, attractive pitches on which to play football, hockey, tennis and basketball.

Zaun supplied 3m high Duo8 double wire panel sports fencing, with hockey mesh on the lowest 225mm to withstand high velocity hockey ball impacts in place of traditional timber hockey boards.

NEW Academy is committed to achieving excellence through endeavour for students from 11 to 18 years. The new pitches will inspire the youngsters to play outdoor sports in a safe enclosed all weather surface area.

CAN “THE FRIENDS OF” SAFEGUARD THE FUTURE OF pUBLIC pARkS?

Alpha Rail sales Director, Phil Ball discusses the future funding of public parks and recreation areas. I have just been reading an article concerning the uncertainty over the availability of funding for the maintenance and improvement of public parks and recreation areas. The implications that more parks may disappear due to an inability to maintain them to a safe standard struck a chord with me on so many levels. I believe it is vital these areas of public space are preserved to be enjoyed my many generations to come. And please can I assure you that this is not just out of vested interest simply because this is one of the sectors that will use Alpha Rail metal railings! As we all know, in the past, most public parks and recreation areas have been owned and therefore funded by local authorities who maintain and upgrade them in line with the affordability and priorities of the government funding they have been allocated. Sadly, in recent years, with pressure mounting on local authorities to reduce spending due to cuts in their budgets, many parks have become neglected.

30 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 11

Some have been lucky enough to secure funding through alternative sources such as the heritage lottery fund (HLF) or through partnerships with commercial organisations such as large retailers or developers where planning permission for a development has been linked to regeneration of a local area. However, I fear this will not be enough. The article makes it very clear that the pressure appears to be on everyone to come up with new and sustainable sources of income, which will safeguard the future of these beautiful areas. Having been involved in the manufacture and supply of metal railings and gates for parks projects I have had first hand experience of dealing with an increasing number of volunteers who have formed “friends of [park name] associations.” I have been really impressed by their activities and the passion that has united them to save and improve their local open spaces. From what I have witnessed on these projects, their professionalism is to be applauded. They have become a group of very influential people with common goal of saving their greenbelt. Their opinion

is actively sought and has guided many community projects and planning proposals that are geared towards maintaining and improving public parks. There are many examples of their views being consulted for inclusion in forward thinking and strategic planning to create sustainable initiatives that will generate regular revenues on a not for profit basis that are almost sufficient to maintain the area on an on-going basis. They have rallied together to raise funds for improvements and regeneration. In no way am I being patronizing in my praise for their efforts – indeed I’m full of hope that these associations might co-ordinate together on a more nationwide basis to secure the future of these valuable spaces. Which leads me to a vital question. How can we as suppliers to this sector and our respective trade associations help? Is there a way to unite these volunteers on a nationwide basis under a single umbrella to create a business model other “Friends of groups” can follow and thus help safeguard the future of public parks? www.alpharail.co.uk

Willerby Landscapes receive the BALI Grand Award for a record fifth time

Principal Winner. Willerby Landscapes Ltd. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, South Park Plaza, London

A

t the 38th BALI National Landscape Awards, BALI Registered Contractor Willerby Landscapes took the Grand Award for a record fifth time. This unprecedented achievement comes at the height of Willerby’s professional reputation and recognises their work to take the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, South Park Plaza into legacy. Held annually at London’s Grosvenor House in Park Lane the BALI National Landscape Awards, in association with

Horticulture Week and headline sponsor Rigby Taylor, recognise excellence in landscape design, construction and maintenance achieved by registered members of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI). Over 110 entries were received this year and a total of 79 awards made. This year’s Awards ceremony was hosted by journalist, broadcaster and former Conservative Party politician and Cabinet Minister Michael Portillo who addressed guests during the luncheon and joined Awards sponsors on the stage to present the

Principal and Special Awards to 25 BALI members. The presentation of the Grand Award to Rick Davies, Operations Director of Willerby Landscapes, was made by sponsor Rigby Taylor’s Executive Chairman Chris Clark. The Awards were attended by a record 820 BALI members and guests, amongst them Baroness Fookes, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Gardening and Horticulture Group, Mark Camley, Director of Park Operations at the London Legacy Development Corporation, Sue Biggs, Director General of the Royal Horticultural Society, and Tom Hart Dyke, horticulturist and plant hunter. Also attending, and taking the opportunity to celebrate the company’s 40 years of award-winning landscape design and construction with 37 of its employees, was BALI Registered contractor Graduate Gardeners. Winners of many BALI and RHS awards over the years, including 2014, the company felt that the BALI Awards event in the surroundings of Grosvenor House was the perfect opportunity to celebrate their 40 years in the landscape industry. Willerby Landscapes, who are based in Kent, were awarded the Grand Award - BALI’s highest accolade - at this year’s ceremony for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, South Park Plaza scheme. Willerby Landscapes, who are based in Kent, were awarded the Grand Award - BALI’s highest accolade - at this year’s ceremony contractor, Willerby carried out extensive re-modelling of levels and grounds involving major engineering works, before undertaking the construction of hard landscape features across the entire area and constructing and installing decking and linear seating. The intelligent use of off-site prefabrication provided a solution to help overcome the challenging time constraints. Commenting on the company’s achievement, chair of the

adjudication panel Greg Allen said: “The amount of work achieved in such a short space of time was breathtaking and, given the scale and complexity of the project, the fit and finish was remarkable. Exceptional planning, project management and attention to detail are all in evidence, as is the excellent working relationship between the contractor and the architects to find solutions to seemingly intractable problems. This scheme is an exemplar of how to achieve a project of this scale to a tight deadline without compromising the very highest professional standards demanded by such an iconic, internationally-recognised, outdoor space. Willerby Landscapes is a worthy winner of this year’s Grand Award, reinforcing their seemingly unassailable position as BALI’s premier landscape contractor for large-scale projects.

TOWER pOppY ARTWORkS

TO TOUR THE Uk Independent charity Historic Royal Palaces is pleased to confirm that two major features of ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’, the art installation of poppies at the Tower of London, by the artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper, will travel to a number of locations around the UK from 2015. Donations from the Backstage Trust and the Clore Duffield Foundation, together with government funding, have secured Weeping Window and Wave, two large-scale metalwork structures featuring thousands of ceramic poppies, allowing them to be presented across the UK from 2015 – 2018. Following a national tour, the artworks will be gifted to the nation and go on permanent display at the IWM London and IWM Manchester as one of the 14 – 18 NOW legacy projects. Weeping Window and Wave form two striking features of the display at the Tower of London. Weeping Window is the cascade of poppies that can be seen pouring out of a window 20ft from the ground and into the moat. Wave is a curling swathe of poppies which rises up from the moat to create an arch over the entrance to the Tower. Wave will remain in place at the Tower of London until the end of November, before travelling to sites around the UK until 2018. It is estimated that the art installation at the Tower of London will have been seen by more than 4 million people by the time it is completed. In total, 888,246 ceramic poppies will be planted in the moat, one for each British and Colonial fatality during the First World War. A team of over 19,000 volunteers from across the UK have helped to install the poppies so far, with the last one being planted on Armistice Day, 11 November 2014. The first poppy was planted on 17 July 2014 by one of the Tower of London's Yeoman Warders. All of the individual ceramic poppies have now been sold, and will be dispersed to hundreds of thousands of people across the UK and beyond after 11 November. The sale of the poppies will result in millions of pounds in additional funding for six service charities: Confederation of Service Charities (COBSEO), Combat Stress, Coming Home, Help for Heroes, Royal British Legion and SSAFA (formerly the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association). General the Lord Dannatt, Constable of the Tower of London, said: “We are delighted that key elements of Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red – the poppies installation at the Tower of London – which has so captured the heart of the nation, are to be preserved for many more thousands of people to see and appreciate over the coming four years. “All at the Tower of London and Historic Royal Palaces are most grateful that this wonderful community art project will continue for the next four years.” Michael Day, Chief Executive of Historic Royal Palaces, commented: “The poppies installation at the Tower of London has captured the public imagination. We have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of everyone involved, from the many volunteers that have helped plant the poppies over recent months, to the hundreds of thousands of people who have bought the poppies and will give them permanent homes across the UK and beyond. “It has always been our intention that the poppies installation would have a legacy beyond 11 November, so we are delighted that a part of this unique commemoration can be shared by the nation. We are grateful to the donors and to the Government for making this possible.”

GREEN-TECH’S ARBORRAFT SYSTEM MAkES ITS pREVIEW IN CORONATION STREET The set of the nation’s favourite TV programme – Coronation Street – has now moved to the new ITV Media City based in Salford. The good people of Green-tech are used to working on high profile projects but the call that came from the famous cobbles got everyone talking! A major part of the Coronation Street set move was the introduction of a tree onto the street, just outside of Audrey’s hair salon. Uprooting the existing tree had been considered highly impractical. ‘Audrey’s tree’ required planting in a specific restricted area so Green-tech’s specification team, gtSpecifier, was called upon for advice and to help draw up the plans and visit the site to prepare the tree pit. Green-tech’s Technical Development Manager Barry Browne, comments “We knew that the new planting would be a high profile and sensitive issue and would require a lot of resource for one single tree. Our specification team were delighted to assist with this momentous event. The ArborRaft System was perfect for this project.”

40 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 11

The ArborRaft tree planting system is a revolutionary system that is installed at the sub-base to offer load bearing support whilst reducing soil compaction and directing root growth away from the surface in urban environments. The System works with the tree’s roots to guarantee delivery of essential water and nutrients yet also encouraging root coverage that mirrors the tree’s canopy. The ArborRaft System was used in the Coronation Street set because of its ease of installation and no requirement for deep pit excavations. It also provided a load bearing structure for an established tree that would require the growing media containing, extensive space for roots and abundance of water, oxygen and nutrients. The ArborRaft System accommodates all types of vehicle loadings from cars through to heavy goods vehicles. The open structure of the individual units acts as an air gap diverting root growth away from the pavement towards nutrient-rich soil. It is a tried and tested system that has successfully been installed into projects across the UK and Europe.

Stephen Martlew, Landscape Architecture commented, “The planting of the tree at Coronation Street was a unique project that required a considerable amount of planning and a specification that would be simple to execute on site. The ArborRaft System provided answers for many of the concerns with urban planting by spreading any loads through its raft structure to avoid compaction of the growing media and enabling a substantial tree pit to be created that would provide an unrestricted rooting area. The system delivers a useful and cost effective detail for specifying trees in paved areas, supporting the paving and allowing the tree to be planted at a reasonable level”. INVESTMENT IN pLAYGROUNDS FALLING DESpITE pHYSICAL INACTIVITY CRISIS

Government policymakers are failing to recognise the value of play in tackling children’s catastrophic obesity and physical inactivity levels, says the Association of Play Industries (API). According to latest figures from API member companies, UK order values for playgrounds and play equipment fell by six per cent between the second and third quarters of 2014, from £43.8 million in Q2 to £41 million in Q3. Total order values in the first nine months of 2014 were £128.1 million compared to £128.8 million at the same point last year, a drop of 0.5 per cent. The API blames the play market downturn on financial pressures in the core Local Authority sector, traditionally the UK’s biggest play buying market. £18 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England to improve the outdoor facilities of 600 primary schools across England has so far failed to make a significant impact on the play market, despite many API members winning contracts to install new facilities. However it may contribute to a more optimistic end of year. Total order values for API member companies in 2014 are set to be £164 million. This is a one per cent increase on 2013 levels (£162 million) but is 17 per cent below the 2010 market peak of £198 million when political support for play was at its highest. API Chair Michael Hoenigmann says: “There has never been a greater need to increase children’s activity levels, yet the UK play market faces significant challenges from constrained Local Authority budgets and a lack of political will. Today’s children will live shorter lives than their parents unless we tackle obesity and sedentary lifestyles. It’s time for policymakers to acknowledge that investment in well-designed, highquality public play provision will bring long-term health, economic and societal benefits. This is about more than swings and roundabouts, it’s about our children’s future.” One area where the API does expect to see market growth in 2015 is from commercial play buyers looking to attract more families like hospitality and tourism businesses. The API is the lead trade body within the UK play sector, representing approximately 85 per cent of UK play industry companies including manufacturers, installers, designers and distributors of outdoor and indoor play equipment and safety surfacing. It campaigns at the highest levels for policy recognition of the value of play. Play buyers include local authorities, town and parish councils, schools and nurseries, the NHS and MoD, housebuilders and developers, holiday and theme park operators, and pub and restaurant chains. www.api-play.org

Public fund cuts in the centre of the health crisis in the uK Public Spaces promote Public Health for Everyone Physical activity and exercise is vital for everyone, no less so than for a child with a special need or disability. Often physical activity at school is centred on complex team sports which does not suit every child. According to research by University of Illinois, Chicago's Department of Disability and Human Development, children with disabilities are at a greater risk for health concerns caused by obesity. That is where the playground becomes a vital component of

healthy wellbeing, there is no structure in place; rather it allows a child to develop at their own pace, developing coordination, muscle strength and core stability. 1 in 20 children in the UK live with a disability and the continued public spending cuts are increasing the vulnerability of these children and their families. pUMpTRACkS Pumptracks are increasingly popular facilities and a fantastic form of active play. Already well established across Europe, they have been growing in numbers across the UK, but whilst most will have heard the term 'pumptrack', many do not know exactly what they are, who they are used by and what they can do for a community. Pumptracks were born from the biking worlds of BMX and mountain biking, as riders looked for a style of track design that focussed on fun, inclusivity and progression, rather than competition; the concept for Pumptracks was born. The concept revolves around a constantly undulating layout, where riders generate momentum and speed not through pedalling, but rather an up and down pumping motion over the undulations, which propels them forwards, as if by magic. Corners are steeply banked to support the rider and maintain momentum and the layouts are continuous loops allowing riders to carry out multiple laps as they intuitively learn how to ride the tracks and improve their bike skills while having a great time. Without the large and intimidating jumps often found on BMX tracks, or penalties for failure, Pumptracks are far more accessible and safer for novice riders. In turn, this means that Pumptracks have the ability to increase participation in outdoor sports. With more options for creative design, they can be incorporated into small or unusually shaped parcels of land that would otherwise be useless for outdoor recreation facilities. Originally built with the same construction techniques as BMX tracks, from subsoil and stone, the next evolution of the Pumptrack has arrived with the birth of Modular Pumptracks. Bringing all the efficiencies associated with prefabricated design, safety certificates and supplied with warranties, they open pumptracks up to a world of new possibilities.

info@back-on-track.co.uk

-

With smooth factory finished riding surfaces, Modular Pumptracks are no longer for bikes alone, but rather, they’re also perfect for micro-scooters and skateboards. This makes for a very inclusive facility when compared to current options that tend to focus more on one group than another. Whilst they appeal to everyone from toddlers to pensioners, they have particularly struck a chord with young teenagers who are often overlooked when community facilities are developed. Schemes have proven to reduce anti social behaviour as people are engaged in a healthy and active form of play. Pioneers of Modular Pumptracks in the UK, Back On Track, offer their tracks in two versions: A Composite Track that’s demountable and is great for schools, leisure centres, resorts and events, or a Precast Concrete Track, designed for a permanent installation in parks and urban areas. MD of Back On Track, Rowan Sorrell, described the popularity of their Modular Pumptracks, especially amongst young people: “Wherever we’ve taken our Composite Track and set it up, it’s just been a huge success. We've had young kids on microscooters, experienced BMXers and skateboarders and even older mountain bikers queuing up for a go, and the feedback we’ve been getting from everyone who’s ridden them has been hugely positive. One of the reasons is that they’re so accessible; if you can ride a bike, you can ride a pumptrack and have a lot of fun too.” With that in mind, and their increasingly widespread adoption throughout the UK, you too might find yourself riding a pumptrack soon enough!

BENKERT BANKE - Design and manufacture contemporary street furniture. A family business based in the Franconia district of Bavaria. The factory building demonstrates this family’s attention to detail. Designed by the alternative Swiss Architect Mario Botta, he took his inspiration from his surroundings to harmonise the facility with the landscape incorporating aesthetics with the function of a modern factory. The building was completed in 1999 and is considered to be a fine example of manufacturing units into the future. Built into the side of a hill to aid sound insulation and heating and to blend within the natural landscape. No water, oil or gas is used in the production of our street furniture and surplus energy is supplied to the neighboring village where most of the employees reside. Benkert Banke has introduced new and innovative designs of benches, bins, bike stands and bollards, of which have become classics in their own time – this year is no exception with the introduction of the Comfony and Ontigo ranges. All Benkert seating frames are manufactured in stainless steel – then powder-coated in specially formulated paint, which provides an extremely hardwearing surface. In the new ranges we are launching for 2015 the seating slats are manufactured in aluminum and sleeved in PET which is available in a variety of colours. PET is a

48 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 11

totally recyclable polyester derivative and requires less energy to produce than most alternatives. In fact the whole bench is recyclable so is a “green“ alternative – which is necessary for the world today. Sustainability through longevity – Benkert have introduced a totally new concept and material to the street furniture market. PET, a material already used in the food and packaging industry is an exciting addition to the manufacture of our new COMFONY and ONTIGO ranges. PET offers a warm surface for the aluminum slats during the winter and cool in the winter. It can be cleaned easily and requires no maintenance otherwise as for example timber does. The entire process from conception and design and through to the manufacture of the end product is carried out on site in the Benkert factory. Once you buy into BENKERT BANKE you are making a long-term commitment, as you will have the furniture for as long your landscape design endures. K

The aptly titled Quiet Mark Treehouse and Garden by John Lewis will be on display at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show, from July 8 – 13th July. Set against the spectacular back-drop of the palace and surrounded by the 34 acres of gardens, the show

will offer 130,000 visitors the chance to experience the magic of the treehouse; an ethereal haven which takes inspiration from nature and the outdoors. The treehouse is built from Kebony, a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and toxic treated timber. The technology behind the wood is an innovative process that enhances the properties of sustainable softwood species to give them similar characteristics to tropical hardwoods. It is designed by Blue Forest, the world’s leading luxury treehouse and eco-home builders for Quiet Mark and

John Lewis. Blue Forest create treehouses which reflect the environment in which they are built, aiming to bring people closer to the natural world and the great outdoors, with environmental credentials and sustainability a key consideration in all of their designs. A not-for-profit organisation, Quiet Mark is the international mark of approval from the UK’s Noise Abatement Society, encouraging the design of quieter high performance technology and solutions to reduce unwanted noise in our environment. The Quiet Mark Treehouse and Gardens by John Lewis will offer personal

sound-portraits for visitors and a Wild Sanctuary animal soundscape. The RHS aims to encourage visitors to spend more time in the great outdoors. A thoroughly British establishment, the summer festival celebrates outdoor living and provides ideas for visitors to replicate in their own gardens. This year’s show will focus on the themes of ‘Grow, inspire and escape’ and the treehouse will reinforce these ideas, creating for its occupants a sense of proximity to nature and total detachment from the noise of the world.

Adrian Pye, Head of International Sales at Kebony said: “It has been a very exciting project for Kebony to be involved in and seeing the treehouse in the wonderful RHS setting at Hampton Court, surrounded by the some of the most prestigious gardens. It will demonstrate how innovations such as Kebony can be integrated with a building’s natural environment”. Simon Payne, Director at Blue Forest commented: “Our bespoke treehouses are designed to blend in and reflect their secluded locations. We only use only the highest quality products to ensure that they are able to withstand and not damage the environment. Kebony was a fitting choice for this Quiet Mark project because of its strength and environmental credibility. It’s organic, natural beauty means that it looks fantastic amongst the stunning array of gardens on display at RHS.” Sound is increasingly becoming a more important consideration when deciding what technology to buy for our homes. John Lewis’s pioneering partnership with the Quiet Mark award programme sets a new benchmark in sound quality for the next generation of high performance low-noise technology, designed to be in closer harmony with nature. This unique charity/retailer partnership is also aiming to evolve consumer understanding of sound quality whilst working to develop a new era of sound measurement for electrical products sold at the UK’s favourite department store. Lexus, the luxury hybrid car leader, and Panasonic, leader in the development and engineering of electronic technologies, are feature sponsors of the Treehouse.

Kebony was a fitting choice for this Quiet Mark project because of its strength and environmental credibility.

84 pLYMOUTH GROVE 84 Plymouth Grove, Manchester, was the home of novelist Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-65) after 1850 until her death. Her novels include Mary Barton, Cranford, North and South, Ruth and Wives and Daughters and are enjoyed on television, stage and radio. This literary association enhances the house’s architectural significance as a rare survivor of an early Victorian villa in a Greek Revival style in Manchester. The property is Grade II and is on the national Buildings at Risk register. Bernard Taylor Partnership was appointed as lead architects for the restoration work to the house with a focus to ensure a long-term viable use for the house by making it fully accessible to the public and repairing it with appropriate materials. ACS Consulting provided arboricultural advice and surveys to support the redevelopment of the Grade II property. Working closely with BTP we selected trees to be retained and protected that enhanced the historical setting of the site. Work during the project included surveys for nesting birds.

Based on the modern simple style, the reconstruction of Town River and Gudu Harbor is permeated with strong water town style and features everywhere.

Zhangjiagang Town River Reconstruction

T

he Town River is located at the south of urban core commercial pedestrian street, and it is started from Gudu Harbor on the east and extended to Gangcheng Blvd on the west with an overall length of more than 2,200 meters and average river width of almost 12 meters. Since the early 1990s, due to the situation that nearly half of the river was covered by house and the rain sewage directly discharged into the river, and unable to implement river dredging throughout the

year, the river water quality was seriously polluted; for the surrounding area of Town River, the environment was in a mess, and the traffic was congested and the buildings were old and shabby. The comprehensive reconstruction of Town River is based on the concept of creating the “City Parlor of core commercial area and trying to implement the pollution control and water import meanwhile recover the natural ecology of the river; construct the landscape meanwhile provide

a more pleasant environment; implement comprehensive improvement meanwhile improve infrastructure functions of the entire region.

The heartland of the riverside area is the general public places, the landscape design is elegant and modern and utilizes boulder strip and granite to create a thick and solid feeling.

Based on the modern simple style, the reconstruction of Town River and Gudu Harbor is permeated with strong water town style and features everywhere. Designer utilizes pavilion and wall to deduce the peculiar scenery of south of the Yangtza River—people who lives near river. The most familiar Tsing Lung Bridge for the people of Old Yangshe was repaired. The Tsing Lung Bridge, Longyin, the sound of tide of Gudu Harbor, the Green Fragrant Pavilion, the bamboo raft dock, the ship dock, the Jiyang city wall and the “Eight Forbiddens” stela and the eight original cultural elements in the history of Old Yangshe are embellished on the two sides of Gudu Harbor river by creative arrangement to present the waterfront human landscape features of Gudu Harbor. The heartland of the riverside area is the general public places, the landscape design is elegant and modern and utilizes boulder strip and granite to create a thick and solid feeling. The landscape bridge is the central link to connect the north and south area of the river so that benefits the daily life of the general public, meanwhile forms a landscape over the river. The design of a center stage increases the lively atmosphere of the overall city public square, and the design of a waterfront footpath adds a romantic atmosphere to people’s life, what’s more, the cascade design next to the coffee house increases the flow atmosphere to the square, and the 3 meters drop of cascade creates a visual impact and becomes a landscape focal point on the square. The sculpture design on the road corner makes the external public space unified with a theme and forms an integral public outdoor landscape. Meanwhile, the landscape design follows the planning and design of municipal government, bus stations are properly arranged on this area to make it convenient for citizens’ daily life. In the overall landscape and architecture design, we get rid of all the cumbersome notations and keep the most peaceful sense of value, and the Chinese spirit is greater than Chinese elements in the design of this project.
