Durable All-Weather Pointing for Sandstone Paving The extensive terraces and multi-level patios around this prestige barn conversion were all created using an attractive combination of 60mm thick, random length, natural sandstone paving slabs, together with reclaimed granite setts. All of the pointing and grouting was carried out after the main construction and paving bedding work had finished when it was also during the winter months, mostly having to be done in November and December. GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Pointing from NCC Streetscape was the ideal material for this pointing work, as not only was it fast and nonstaining to wet slurry apply, but it could also be applied during cold and wet weather, meaning there would be no weather delays on the project. This advanced epoxy resin bound sand based material then hardens quickly to allow access and use of the paved areas shortly afterwards. Two contrasting and complementary shades of the vdw 850 pointing, in stone grey and natural sand, were used to highlight and enhance the beauty of the natural stone.

Granite Sett Paving Repointing for the Peace Gardens The natural stone paving through the Peace Gardens in Sheffield has been refurbished for Sheffield City Council using GftK's vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar. The natural stone paving was becoming loose and subject to damage due to the typical cracking and loss of strength problems associated with traditional and proprietary cement based jointing mortars that had all been tried without success. The Council's Engineers and their Contractor found the ideal solution was the unique; epoxy resin bound sand based, vdw 850 Paving joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape. This also enabled all of the work to be successfully completed and without having to completely close any areas of the gardens. Any visible damage was removed, the areas high pressure water jet cleaned, any loose stone setts rebounded in position and then the joints simply wet-slurry pointed with the vdw 850, which self-compacts into the joints. The surface is rinsed and then dry brushed-off and within a short period of time can be reopened for public access – also with no delays for cold or wet weather.

GOOD EXTERIOR LANDSCAPING CAN ADD VALUE TO NEW BUILD DEVELOPMENTS

Brett Landscaping is advising housebuilders to devote attention to the exterior landscaping of new build developments in order to enhance the saleability of ‘turnkey’ projects. According to Andrew Gill, Marketing Manager at Brett Landscaping, dramatic changes to the housing market since the major downturn in 2008 has made selling properties far more demanding over the past few years. Even today, now that the market is starting to show signs of a sustained recovery, it is still essential to present a new property to best effect starting from when the prospective customer first approaches the property. “No longer can developers rely on selling a property by simply adding an asphalt driveway to the front and a lawn to the rear of a new property by way of landscaping,” he explains. “Nowadays, homebuyers expect external spaces to be designed and installed with the same care and attention to detail as interior spaces.” Research has shown that the average housebuyer takes around 20 minutes to decide if a property is right for him, of which the first five minutes will often be spent looking at the house from outside. “It would therefore be reasonable to suggest that the landscaping of a property is a key part of their purchasing decision, helping to set the tone in a customer’s mind and condition their subsequent viewing of the rest of the property,” suggests Andrew Gill. At the same time, today’s busy lifestyles have increased the desire for ‘turnkey’ properties that owners can move into and enjoy immediately, rather than spending the next few years redecorating to suit. “This is especially the case with families where both partners go out to work and do not always have the time, or inclination, to start gardening in their evenings and weekends,” explains Andrew Gill. Given these changing conditions, there are significant economic benefits to investing in a development’s landscaping, but housebuilders are not always aware of the advantages. According to Andrew Gill, “historically, the budget set aside for landscaping is too often seen as a buffer fund to absorb any cost overruns elsewhere on the build, so designs get downgraded to suit.” “Whilst this can help with the overall project costs, we would argue that it is a false economy in the longer term as properties can take longer to sell and buyers will look to offset the on-cost of having to upgrade the landscaping against the amount they are

10 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 8

willing to pay for the property.” There is also the question of surface water management to consider with local authorities starting to establish an approval framework with regard to integrating Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) into new developments. This means that there are now functional as well as aesthetic benefits to creating highquality landscaping. “Flood management technologies such as permeable paving provide developers with increased scope in land usage at the same time as improving the appearance of the site, at little – if any – additional cost,” explains Andrew Gill. Brett Landscaping believes that for both aesthetic and functional reasons it is now high time that the outside of a property received the same care and attention as the inside within the development process. “Few housebuilders today would think of not fitting out a new property in a way that shows it off to its best effect – especially when it comes to kitchens and bathrooms. It would appear shortsighted not to give outdoor spaces the same priority, especially as these are increasingly seen as providing a vital ‘extra room’ to the property through the summer months. “Yet all too often we see ‘identikit’ developments where the initial landscaping does nothing to enhance the property. It seems ironic that, in recent years, some of the best examples of new build hard landscaping have been seen within the social housing sector,” Andrew Gill adds. In the private sector, by contrast, Brett Landscaping reports that it has seen many examples where the initial hard landscaping on a new property is quickly removed and replaced with higher specification product. “This would appear to suggest that the new homeowner is willing to pay more to get the look that they want,” explains Andrew Gill. “It would therefore seem sensible to install it in the first instance thereby saving time, money and materials – and potentially increasing the initial sale price of the property for the developer. “Housebuilders who fail to recognise this trend are likely to find it increasingly difficult to maintain their position in the long term as the expectations of increasingly savvy buyers increase over time,” Andrew Gill concludes.

A new chapter in public paving One of the largest public libraries in Europe.

Pavers were selected to create a ‘red line’ to lead pedestrians into Centenary Square.

Combined with the different paver surface finishes, and the variation of laying patterns, the paved area maintains a sense of textural depth.

The largest public square in the heart of Birmingham.

At the heart of innovation. Aware of the need for paving as striking and as functional as the Library of Birmingham’s architectural design, Wienerberger’s Centenary Square paving was meticulously crafted and beautifully executed. Tel: 0161 491 8200 Web: www.wienerberger.co.uk

Ribbons Cliff Garten Studio

From the architect. Ribbons is a landscape sculpture for the Art and Architecture Program of the General Services Administration, at 50 United Nations Plaza, San Francisco, CA. The courtyard design transforms the classical symmetry of the 1932 Arthur Brown building, by inserting a sculptural matrix of paving, seating, fountains and planting into the building’s 20,000 sq. ft. courtyard.

Garten re-envisioned the two classical fountains in Arthur Brown’s original 1932 plan (which were never built) as contemporary granite forms. These forms are part of a larger horizontal vocabulary of an elongated classical motif of concrete paving ribbons set into a larger pervious surface of decomposed granite. Elegant cast concrete benches rise from, twist and fall back into these paving ribbons giving a rhythmically punctuated circulation system throughout the courtyard.

These sculptures made of recycled and cast concrete give the impression that the horizontal surface has been lifted to create a three dimensional interwoven form and create points of rest in the courtyards circulation system. The green character of the courtyard is based on simple sustainable technologies, with low water, shade tolerant planting beneath a grove of 32 white birch trees that create vertical dimension between the active ground plane and the buildings white brick walls. Ribbons cuts a sensitive line between the preservation of the historical architecture and the adaptive reuse of the Federal Building by the GSA and its aggressive Sustainability initiative for the project under GSA’s Design Excellence Program. ALLEVIATING THE COST OF FLOOD DEFENCES Below ground drainage specialist Burdens has worked with Enviromesh to supply bespoke soil reinforced steel mesh facing units as part of the River Yare flood alleviation scheme. The end result has led to significant cost savings as well as allowing footpaths to reopen ahead of schedule. Furthermore, the units have performed well against the increased water levels associated with the worst tidal surge to hit the East Coast for sixty years in December last year. The 1.2km length of northern floodbank along the River Yare from Breydon Bridge to Railway Marsh provides important flood defences for the Norwich to Great Yarmouth rail line and the A47, as well as being a popular footpath with walkers and a significant conservation area. This section of bank is vulnerable to erosion and had not received any major improvement works for decades, leaving parts of it relatively low and with a narrow crest width. As part of the wider 20 year Broadland Flood Alleviation Project, BAM Nuttall was appointed as main contractor specifically to carry out floodbank strengthening and footpath resurfacing along this stretch of the River Yare.

14 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 8

While another soil reinforced mesh product was originally specified, BAM Nuttall consulted specialist supplier Burdens who advised that a significant time and cost saving could be achieved with a specially designed Enviromesh slope system. Enviromesh visited the site and designed an all-in-one steel mesh facing unit that would create, retain and support the flood bunds, as well as providing the grass protection mesh which needed to be installed on the new floodbank crest to reduce erosion caused by walkers and ensure the footpath could be reopened as soon as possible. Neil Holmes, commercial director at Enviromesh, explained: “We visited the site and were able to design an all encompassing mesh system specifically for the needs of this project, which was much more cost effective than the original specification. We created an all-in-one unit design, with more efficient use of materials to get 710 metres long and two metres high embankment stabilisation using green plastic coated welded mesh with a 120 year design life. “Our Enviromesh system has a steel mesh base unit to create and stabilise the slope for the flood bank, along with horizontal

tails that provide the soil reinforcement. The fact it is all-in-one unit saves the time and cost that would have been taken in onsite assembly. We carried out full trials in our factory before training the site team to install the product.” The Enviromesh system was approved for use by both the Environment Agency and Network Rail and is now being sold by the manufacturers as a solution for other geotechnical solutions requiring soil reinforced structures. Keith Dorling, managing director at Burdens, said: “BAM Nuttall asked us if we could provide any alternative products to the one specified and as specialists in this area, we were able to work with one of our suppliers, Enviromesh, to design a bespoke pre-assembled system that saved time and cost on the project. Not only has the system helped to enhance flood defences for the area and the Great Yarmouth to Norwich rail line but it provides a wider and more secure crest for walkers, along a popular public right of way.” Burdens is a leading distributor of underground drainage and civil engineering materials with more than 80 years of experience servicing the industry. It maintains its leading position through its national network of branches, providing stock in depth and utilising specialist delivery and handling equipment. From Zaun to Ashford – to infinity and beyond! Landscape and urban fencing manufacturer Zaun completed a radical unique solution for the focal point of a new £16.5m town centre in Ashford, Kent.

of John Wallis, a famous Ashford-born mathematician who developed various mathematical theories and introduced the symbol for infinity.

The centrepiece to the project was a new public square next to Victoria Road School, called John Wallis Square. Zaun created one-off architectural fencing to lend a natural edge to the square while reducing visibility through to the school beyond.

Different materials and finishes were used to create an art trail with etched text and symbols relating to his work.

The Wolverhampton manufacturer drew on its specialist skills in bespoke construction to produce the complex fencing solution, which included two layers of perforated panels with different-sized apertures creating a zany fence line up to a height of 4m. The scheme was designed by an artist to commemorate the pioneering work

Zaun and the main contractors Volker Fitzpatrick accommodated a number of changes from the original designs to reduce overall scheme costs. A pavilion was replaced with an additional planting area and the length of the architectural fencing was reduced. The £16.5m project secured Community Infrastructure Funding from the Department for Communities and Local Government and the Department for Transport with Kent County Council

awarding the contract to Volker. Representatives from Ashford’s Future, Kent County Council, Ashford Borough Council, Volker Fitzpatrick, Zaun and Victoria Road Primary School were among the special guests invited to an event celebrating the start of works. Victoria Way is a new route to the south of the town centre to link the International Station at Beaver Road and the A28 Chart Road providing better access to the heart of the town. The new road provides an attractive, treelined avenue from Victoria Road opposite the train station through brownfield industrial land to join with the A28 near Matalan, and includes John Wallis Square, public art displays and new shops, restaurants, cafes and homes over time.

NATRATEX RESTORES ESSEX PARK’S NATURAL BEAUTY Havering Borough Council has used Bituchem’s Natratex hard landscaping material as part of regeneration works on Raphael Park in Romford. As part of a Heritage Lottery Funded project, £1.87 million has been assigned for the restoration of the public parks to provide a cleaner and safer environment for the users to enjoy. Natratex is Bituchem’s leading product and was specified by architects, Chris Blandford Associates, to resurface the footpaths in the park. Chosen for its aesthetics and previous success on a similar project, Natratex allows the hard landscaping to blend in with the natural surroundings to create a less urbanised look. Raphael Park is one of the leisure areas that spreads northwards from the railway line in Romford and was in need of rejuvenating to provide a pleasant area for local residents to enjoy. After having been used on Spinney Hill Park, a previous Heritage Lottery Funded scheme in Leicester, Natratex was specified for its aesthetic and durable qualities. Applied by surface contractors Spade Oak, Natratex in Buff was used on the footpaths to increase the safety through better visibility in fading light and improving the surface quality through the elimination of cracks and potholes. The vibrant yet natural colour provides an element of creativity while harmonising with the green surroundings, proving a refreshing option to the typical grey surfaces used in public areas. Don Stewart of Havering Borough Council and Parks Project Manager, explains why Natratex was chosen. “During the design

stage of the Raphael Park restoration project the Council looked at a range of options for the finished footpath surface including traditional asphalt, resin bound gravel and a breedon gravel type treatment. The Council’s design criteria for the footpath surface treatment were the need to provide value for money, a minimal future maintenance requirement and the provision of a tough surface that would withstand relatively heavy use and that would remain attractive in the setting of an historic park. Following research and many site visits the Council chose Natratex. The footpaths contribute significantly to a transformed historic urban park which is loved by thousands of local people”. The mechanics and functionality of Natratex is similar to traditional asphalt as it is laid and compacted at the same nominal thickness, using conventional equipment. The combination of the specially formulated clear binder and decorative aggregate produces a hardwearing surfacing material while offering an attractive natural stone finish. The versatility of Natratex is demonstrated in its numerous applications from residential roads and driveways, pavements and cycle paths to playgrounds, car parks and area demarcation. It can be applied all year round and the Bituchem design team is available to suggest solutions to individual requirements, tailoring the aggregate type to suit the contract specification. Launched last year, the EverEdge Planter is the new, easy way to construct exquisite planters for use at home, to decorate public spaces or to adorn the outside of an office building. As with all EverEdge products, they are made entirely in the Britain and, from our base in Shropshire, shipped all over the world. The EverEdge Planter has now been used in projects right across the UK and Europe in everything from show gardens to roof gardens. These planters are made to order and can, therefore, come in virtually any size and can be made in a variety of materials including galvanised steel (painted or unpainted), Cor-Ten steel, stainless steel or a natural weathering steel. They can have a base, if required, or can come without; they can be tall; short; wide; narrow; thick or thin. In short, they are whatever you want them to be. The EverEdge Planter allows for un-rivalled flexibility in design and they have been used so far in the gardens of stately homes, outside office buildings, to decorate a stable yard, on rooftop gardens and on the patios of everyday townhouses. The latest planters to leave the factory were a circular planter for growing bamboo and a large rectangular planter used, in part, to house a tortoise! Designs Unveiled for London’s Natural History Museum Urban Redevelopment Following the news last year that five teams had been shortlisted to redesign and reimagine the grounds of London’s iconic Natural History Museum (NHM), five anonymous concept images have been unveiled. The brief called for proposals to “reshape the Museum’s grounds and reinvigorate its public setting” with an aim to creating “an innovative exterior setting that matches Alfred Waterhouse’s Grade I listed building and the award-winning Darwin Centre for architectural excellence, whilst also improving access and engaging visitors.”

For Malcolm Reading, architect and competition organizer, “for anyone interested in design, this project is fascinating because it fuses architecture with landscape and addresses a landmark site that is admired across the world. The submissions are intriguing and the shortlisted teams brim with talented designers who are determined to” showcase the Museum like never before.” According to Dr Michael Dixon, director of the NHM, “the quality and creativity of the concepts gives great insight into the design philosophy of each team and takes us one step closer to appointing the right candidate.”

Heatherwick Releases Updated Images for London’s ‘Garden Bridge’

After winning a Transport for London (TfL) tender for ideas to improve pedestrian access across the River Thames, Thomas Heatherwick and Arup unveiled plans for a new, 367-meter long ‘Garden Bridge’ that will span the river from Temple to the Southbank. The lush pedestrian corridor, earmarked for opening in 2017, would be the first new crossing since the Millennium Bridge opened to the public in 2002. The revival of the South Bank over the past two decades has created a vibrant and artistic district attracting large number of visitors to its art galleries, theatres, music halls, restaurants and outdoor entertainment,” stated Heatherwick. “However, visits to Temple and the north bank area east of Somerset House and Waterloo Bridge are far less frequent. The bridge will grow and nourish the connection

between these distinct areas whilst providing new walking routes to and from Covent Garden and Soho.” The Garden Bridge was originally inspired by actor and campaigner Joanna Lumley, who has been a proponent of such an idea for several years. “It’s quite strange to talk of something that doesn’t exist yet, but the Garden Bridge is already vivid in the plans and the imagination,” Lumley commented. “This garden will be sensational in every way: a place with no noise or traffic where the only sounds will be birdsong and bees buzzing and the wind in the trees, and below the steady rush of water. “It will be the slowest way to cross the river, as people will dawdle and lean on parapets and stare at the great

cityscapes all around; but it will also be a safe and swift way for the weary commuter to make his way back over the Thames. There will be grasses, trees, wild flowers, and plants, unique to London’s natural riverside habitat. And there will be blossom in the spring and even a Christmas tree in mid-winter. I believe it will bring to Londoners and visitors alike peace and beauty and magic.” Heatherwick is expect to submit the planning application for the £150 million project in early 2014. Construction is planned to begin in 2015. Designers: Heatherwick Studio Design: Thomas Heatherwick Engineering: Arup Landscape Architect: Dan Pearson

Landscaping Services The Pot Company is the sole agent for Adezz products in the UK and can supply Corten Steel planters, burners and water features of almost any size or shape. Corten Steel (also known as weathering steel) is a special steel originally developed for bridge building and skyscraper construction due to its incredible strength. It is this strength that makes it incredibly attractive in the construction of outdoor features such as planters, ponds and wood burners. Corten Steel provides warm, rich textures not always associated with metal and it is this attractive rustic colour which sets off the shapes and colours of flowers and plants.

integrity of the material. During the weathering process the Corten Steel produces carbon run off or staining to adjacent materials such as stone or concrete. To reduce this possible staining, all Corten Steel products are supplied with small feet, lifting the product and preventing direct contact with the flooring material. After the initial reactive period Corten Steel will cure and self seal with very little to no carbon runoff. Due to the chemical composition of Corten Steel a very dense oxidisation layer is formed during the weathering process which protects the blue steel inside. If this protective barrier is comprised, it will simply form a new skin to protect itself.

When you first receive your Corten Steel products from The Pot Company they will arrive in an un-weathered state. Once placed outside the weathering process will begin. This process takes several months and Corten Steel has a reactive patina period from 3 to 9 months depending on location and climate. The patina or rust acts as a protective barrier not penetrating or compromising the structural

At this time of year The Pot Company recommends its Corten Steel woodburners to allow you make use of your garden in the colder weather, The Pot Company can deliver though out the UK and if you would like further information on any of the Pot Company products then please contact 01892 890 353 or visit www.thepotco.com.

SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS - GALLEON IS A TOP REGENERATING PERENNIAL RYEGRASS A spreading perennial ryegrass exclusive to Germinal Seeds in the UK has been hailed for its divot recovery qualities in research trials. The regenerative growth qualities of Galleon were demonstrated when it bettered two other competitor brands in a trial at Oregon State University. Galleon was developed as a hardwearing variety of perennial ryegrass with exceptional recovery due to its spreading growth habit. This fine leaved variety also exhibits high resistance to insects and nematode attack due to high endophyte Ievels. The highly rated variety, which was used in football’s 2010 World Cup, was evaluated in the trial against two recent ryegrass blends marketed heavily for their spreading characteristics – RPR and Natural Knit. It was found to repair the divots faster and maintained active growth late into the autumn. The variety is the result of years of co-operative research between Rutgers University and Seed Research of Oregon and is particularly suitable for golf course fairways and tees and sports grounds. Richard Brown, Amenity Sales Manager of Germinal Seeds (GB), said: “We have great faith in Galleon’s qualities and are delighted but not surprised at how well it has done in this research study. We have exclusive rights to Galleon in the UK and Ireland which is a fine addition to our quality range of varieties within the Grade ‘A’ range of grass seed mixtures. “Although it is new to our range we have already seen keen interest in it and have made sales to top sports facilities at independent schools and Premiership football grounds and rugby clubs. “We are confident Galleon will prove its qualities in the home sports turf sector as it has done in the US trials. We are keen for the industry to realise they have a choice when it comes to regenerative or spreading perennial ryegrass as we want them to get the best results.” Galleon traces its origins back to 33 clones selected at Rutgers University for improved Grey Leaf Spot resistance, very high turf quality, improved colour, summer stress tolerance and a spreading growth habit. Progeny of those clones were sent to Seed Research of Oregon’s research facility where further screening was completed for higher seed yield, colour and improved stress and disease resistance in the production environment. But it is its spreading growth habit which sets Galleon apart for its excellent wear tolerance and recovery. It makes it an adaptable and attractive proposition to greenkeepers and groundsmen to help them manage the demands made of their courses and sports facilities. Galleon’s dark green colour and high stress tolerances makes it ideal for a variety of professional turf applications. It blends well with other perennial ryegrasses for golf course fairways, sports fields and turf production. www.germinalseeds.co.uk Landscape & Urban Design Issue 8

Lighten up with ‘Install to Save’ funding

Lighting is often the icing on the cake in landscape and urban design projects, adding clarity, interest and a touch of magic - yet it comes at a significant financial and environmental cost. Using advanced lighting control technology can save up to 40% on energy expenditure but funding such an investment often proves to be a major stumbling block. Russell Fletcher, sales and marketing director of Harvard Engineering, manufacturer of LeafNut, the award-winning wireless control, management and reporting system for outdoor lighting, throws light on a helpful and innovative funding scheme. Sophisticated levels of control for street lights are now at our fingertips, thanks to innovative new wireless lighting control technology. Proven savings of up to £46 in energy costs and 100kg of carbon per street light per year have been shown following the installation of LeafNut, a revolutionary control management system fully researched, developed and manufactured in the UK. LeafNut can be installed in new or retrofit systems and uses GPS and radio frequency to dim or switch off lights, individually or in groups, at the touch of a button from a computer or smartphone. A unique twoway system sends an emailed report every morning with information on energy usage and lamp failure. This leads to further savings on the cost of maintenance and organising night scouting teams to check up on lights. The case for using lighting control technology to cut energy expenditure and carbon emissions is clear and, with 7.5 million street lights in the UK, emitting approximately 830,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and costing £500 million per year to run, installing such a system will add up to considerable savings. Harvard Engineering has developed an innovative approach to funding the installation of LeafNut with a scheme called ‘Install to Save’. It offers to finance all the

up-front equipment costs associated with purchasing and installing the system and the outstanding total is then paid in instalments over an agreed number of years. The scheme is designed so that repayments only start after the first quarter following installation and the investor is guaranteed to never pay more than they are actually saving. Initially, payments are relatively low, basically just allowing for the installation costs to be met. Payments increase over time as savings increase. Luton Borough Council is the first local authority in the UK to take advantage of this finance scheme after successfully trialling LeafNut across 1,340 street lights and then extending their programme. With LeafNut keeping an accurate inventory – their system uses Elexon metering, which is Unmetered Supply User Group (UMSUG) approved – Harvard was able to tailor Luton’s payments to include the actual energy consumption used, the equipment costs and the carbon reduction savings that would be achieved. The system, which includes a 20-year warranty, is expected to reduce energy costs by up to £4 million over a 20-year payback period. Cllr Dave Taylor, Portfolio Holder for highways at Luton, said: “Like all local authorities across the country, our challenge is to cut carbon emissions and mitigate the costs of continued energy price increases against a background of reduced Government funding. In the current financial climate Luton Borough Council could not afford to invest in this type of technology, but the way that this finance package is structured allows us to pay the costs from the savings made.” With this financial barrier removed, it is hoped that more organisations responsible for outdoor lighting will take advantage of the clear and significant benefits of fingertip lighting control to help the UK to operate in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

SUTCLIFFE PLAY SWING HELPS DELIVER FUN TO LONDON ART INSTALLATION A swing designed by play equipment specialist Sutcliffe Play will be enjoyed by commuters and visitors in London from its position within an unusual art installation. After a brief stint away, the IFO (Identified Flying Object) is returning to its home at King’s Cross. The art installation will be based in Battle Bridge Place, between King’s Cross and St Pancras stations, for people to enjoy. At night it will light up in a rainbow of colours. The IFO, which was designed by French artist and architect Jacques Rival, is an installation from RELAY, the dedicated art programme at King’s Cross, curated by Michael Pinsky and Stéphanie Delcroix. The IFO itself, often referred to as ‘the birdcage’, due to its domed, cage-like structure, is made up of huge bars standing 9m high, wide enough for visitors to walk through and enjoy the swing, which hangs at its centre. It first appeared at King’s Cross in 2011.

38 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 8

Sutcliffe Play was chosen to design the new swing for the structure, as swing play is an important part in the history of Sutcliffe Play. While the company started its life in the mining industry, the modern day Sutcliffe Play dates back to the early 1980s when the now Chairman, Robin Sutcliffe, joined the business and focus moved towards the development and production of rubber swing seats and safety surfacing. By the mid 1990s, Sutcliffe Play was established as a market leader in the design and production of swing seats, not just in the UK but across the world. Andrew Love, Area Sales Manager for Sutcliffe Play, says: “We are very proud of Sutcliffe Play’s expertise when it comes to designing a wide range of swings – but the IFO swing is one of our more unusual

projects! We’re delighted to have been able to contribute to such an exciting installation, which I’m sure will bring a great deal of enjoyment to visitors to King’s Cross.” By day passers-by can play inside the structure, enjoying the surroundings from this unusual vantage point, but by night, the structure will come alive, as the bars of the cage illuminate in a brilliant array of colours. Whilst the IFO will primarily be based on the ground, on special occasions its eye-catching structure will be hoisted up into the air to hang freely and light up the night sky. NOTTS SPORT SECURES THE UK’S BIGGEST SAFER SURFACING CONTRACT Leading synthetic turf surfacing specialist Notts Sport has secured an exclusive threeyear contract to provide safer surfacing solutions for Glasgow City Council. Notts Sport has been the exclusive supplier of safer surfaces for recreation and play to Glasgow City Council since 1991, and in that time has worked with the council on over 650 playgrounds and multi-use games areas. The company won the latest contract – the biggest safer surfacing tender in the UK – ahead of many of its main rivals in a competitive tender process. Many of Notts Sport’s installations for Glasgow City Council have seen the company provide a cost-effective solution to refurbish wetpour rubber playgrounds. Notts Sport’s hard-wearing, vandalresistant VHAF NottsSward carpet can usually be laid directly on top of an existing wetpour surface and requires minimal maintenance or repairs. Shaun Patrick, Chairman of Notts Sport, says: “We’re delighted to have once again secured the biggest safer surfacing contract in the UK. “Glasgow City Council began working with Notts Sport 23 years ago following a thorough evaluation of all the surfacing

42 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 8

options available and has stayed with us for so long because of NottsSward’s tremendous vandal-resistant qualities – a particular concern for the authority – and the durability of the product, with many of our installations in Glasgow lasting over 15 years without the need for repair or replacement. “We look forward to continuing to work with the team to deliver the very best safer surfaces for local users.” Notts Sport has also worked with Glasgow City Council on a ground-breaking new type of play area at Glasgow Green which became the forerunner of the ChildsPlay Active system, which has since been rolled out nationwide. ChildsPlay Active creates new opportunities for active play and encourages healthy living and exercise by combining sport, play and education in one space. Notts Sport also provides a full service solution for the local authority including running installation courses for council staff, and providing maintenance training for apprentices. The surface and underlying elements of the popular ChildsPlay system combine to offer a playground that is clean and quickdraining after rain, and resistant to cutting, fire and graffiti.

ChildsPlay can include varying levels of shock absorbent layering beneath the VHAF NottsSward artificial turf, offering critical fall height protection of up to three metres. The synthetic VHAF NottsSward turf carpet is available in 15 colours, offering unlimited potential for patterns and games, and can be laid over shapes, mounds and hollows. Whatever colour or form it takes, the textured, tactile carpet also has great sensory appeal. Meanwhile, Notts Sport’s high-quality synthetic turf systems are suitable for a range of sports and activities and, where space and budgets are at a premium, a multi-use games area provides a costeffective way to offer a variety of activities on one surface. The company’s top-quality project management and design service is available at no upfront cost, so clients can be sure they’ve chosen the perfect scheme before making an investment. More information about Notts Sport’s playground and multi-sport solutions is available by calling 01455 883730, emailing info@nottssport.com, or visiting www.nottssport.com.

Kebony wood selected for the world’s first Quiet Mark Treehouse unveiled at the 2014 Ideal Home Show The Quiet Treehouse has been designed by Blue Forest Luxury Treehouses and will be donated for permanent use by Chestnut Tree House, the children’s hospice in Sussex [London: March 10 2014] Kebony has been working with Blue Forest Luxury Treehouses, John Lewis and Quiet Mark to develop an ambitious tree home made from Kebony wood, the sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood. The Quiet Treehouse will be at the Ideal Home Show from 14th – 30th March 2014 at London’s Earls Court. The treehouse is built from Kebony, a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and toxic treated timber. The technology behind the wood is an innovative process that enhances the properties of sustainable softwood species to give them similar characteristics to tropical hardwoods, making it suitable for use in indoor and outdoor applications. The wood is strong and durable, as a result Kebony has been used for a number of high profile projects in the UK, USA and across Europe. Blue Forest is the world’s leading luxury treehouse and eco-home builders. They create treehouses which reflect the environment in which they are built, aiming to bring people closer to the natural world and the great outdoors. With environmental credentials and sustainability a key consideration in all of their designs, Kebony was a fitting choice for this project because of its strength, beauty and environmental credibility. The silver-gray patina which Kebony develops when exposed to weather is an attractive quality of the wood that will add to the ambience of the treehouse when it is implanted to the tree canopy at Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice in Sussex. A not-for-profit organisation, Quiet Mark is the international mark of approval from the UK’s Noise Abatement Society, encouraging the design of quieter high performance technology and solutions to reduce unwanted noise in our environment. An aural environment initiative, Quiet Mark are the headline sponsors of this year’s Ideal Home Show. The Quiet Treehouse will offer personal sound-portraits for visitors and a Wild Sanctuary animal soundscape. Adrian Pye, Head of International Sales at Kebony said: "It has been a very exciting project for Kebony to be involved in; the exceptional design of Blue Forest’s treehouse and its use of sustainable materials throughout demonstrate how, with innovations such as Kebony, construction can be sustainable and integrated with to complement a building’s environment”. Simon Payne, Director at Blue Forest commented: “Our bespoke treehouses only use only the highest quality products to ensure that they are in keeping with their secluded locations without causing any environmental degradation. The design of the treehouses needs to reflect nature and protect it so the use of Kebony was entirely appropriate for this pioneering Quiet Mark project. It has been a fantastic product to work with.” www.kebony.com
