Award-winning landscape contractors Bowles & wyer Contracts has completed the build and refurbishment of an innovative new playground in The regent’s Park, london on behalf of The royal Parks. This is the second playground commission from The Royal Parks and this prestigious contract follows on from the company’s successful refurbishment of the playground at Greenwich Park in 2012. The Marylebone Green Playground, which re-opens to the public on 24 July 2013, is one of four playgrounds in The Regents Park and one that The Royal Parks felt could be greatly improved to provide a range of play features allowing more creative play and engaging more children at any one time. Bowles & Wyer Contracts has worked closely with landscape architect Noel Farrer of Farrer Huxley Associates who has created an inspiring master plan for the site. The design concept sees the playground split into three zones: a Traditional Play Zone; an Art Play Zone which features a bespoke spiral folly made from 4.5-metre high rendered brick walls; and a Natural Play Zone where logs and boulders are sited with a sculptural natural willow tunnel, shaped to mimic the trunk of a tree. Recycling and reuse has been at the heart of the project and Bowles & Wyer Contracts have been responsible for the refurbishment and adaption of many items of the original play equipment giving the playground a distinctly retro feel, where old and new combine effortlessly. One of the design highlights of the playground is a sculptural climbing frame which was created from a giant Caucasian Elm (Zelkova carpinifolia) which came down in The Regents Park’s Inner Circle in high winds last winter. The 10-metre trunk of the tree, weighing in at about 12-tonnes, is now sited in its new form in the Natural Play Zone. Other work undertaken by the company comprised the building of new paths and entrance gates and the planting of new shrubs and trees, including an entrance of 12 box pleached Limes, around the play zones. Bowles & Wyer Contracts has a particular expertise in building school gardens and playgrounds having worked on a wide variety of projects outside of The Royal Parks contracts from stateowned primary and secondary schools to the prestigious St Paul Cathedral School, Rokeby Prep School and Eton College. Dan Riddleston, Managing Director of Bowles & Wyer Contracts said: “We are thrilled to have been commissioned by The Royal Park again to work on such a prestigious and well-loved London park. It has been a challenge and a pleasure to be involved in the refurbishment of Marylebone Green Playground. I am particularly delighted to see the spectacular Spiral Folly come to life in the Art Play Zone having worked closely with Noel Farrer to realise the most exciting and cost effective solution.” The playground, which lies in the southern section of The Regent’s Park within the borough of Westminster, is bordered by the Nash Terraces on the Outer Circle and the Avenue Gardens to the east.

NEW £3M GRANTHAM TENNIS CENTRE IS LAUNCHED BY FORMER BRITISH NUMBER ONE AND TV PRESENTER ANDREW CASTLE FORMER British tennis number one and TV presenter, Andrew Castle, has launched the start of work on a £3.2 million project to build one of Britain’s best tennis facilities in Grantham. The new tennis facility will be built by Clegg Construction for their client the Grantham Tennis Club. A Groundbreaking Ceremony was held at the site at Arnoldfield, Gonerby Road in Grantham to launch the project. Once completed, the development will see a new indoor tennis centre with four indoor acrylic courts, a social lounge, café, gym, changing facilities, treatment rooms, office and indoor and outdoor viewing areas. Externally, there will be four artificial grass courts, four mini red hard courts and five artificial clay courts. David Knifton, business development manager at Clegg Construction, said: “Here at Clegg Construction we are delighted to be entrusted with the construction of this project which will see the creation of one of the very best tennis centres in the country. “Work on site will be carried out in two phases which will allow the existing club to remain open while work is completed. “Once the entire project is finished in March next year, the development will see a new

indoor tennis centre with four indoor acrylic courts, a social lounge, café, gym, changing facilities, treatment rooms, office and indoor and outdoor viewing areas. Externally, there will be four artificial grass courts, four mini red hard courts and five artificial clay courts.

and our Design Team at BSA Design, Gleeds, WilliamSaunders, Crouch Perry Wilkes, WSPsafety, local businesses and our club committee for working hard on our behalf to enable this project to become a reality for the benefit of Grantham.

“This is a tremendously exciting development to be involved with, enhancing Grantham and the area far beyond with such a fantastic sporting facility.”

“We are really looking forward to working with Clegg Construction. New partnerships for the venture, which we are also very excited to work with, include Mencap who will be running the café, The Equilibrium (Grantham) gym team, TBS sports which will be providing tennis and gym clothing and kit and Exhale treatment rooms managed by Jette Rasmussen.

Funding for the project has come from a Grantham business and from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), which has provided £1m for the project in grants and loans. Andy Mcfeeters, LTA tennis development manager for Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire, said: “The LTA is committed to getting more people playing tennis more often, and Grantham Tennis Club has a proven track record of being a family-friendly club offering tennis opportunities for players of all ages and abilities. “This new facility is a result of a great deal of hard work and commitment from many at the club and I am absolutely confident that it will result in massive growth in tennis participation in Grantham and beyond. Tennis is genuinely a game for everyone in Grantham.” Lianne Tapson, club chairman, added: “In 2009 we were asked by Lincolnshire LTA ‘how brave do we want to be with our development plans’ and the answer was braver than most – four years of planning, adjusting, manoeuvring and negotiating has brought us to the point where we are now able to begin our project in earnest. “The team at Grantham tennis club would like to thank the Lawn Tennis Association, South Kesteven District Council, Lewis and Hickey

www.clegggroup.co.uk

Adrian Hollis, director from Lewis and Hickey, said: “We’re really pleased to see all the club’s hard work, perseverance and vision coming to fruition in the design and creation of their tennis club facility, which when complete in spring 2014, will enhance sport provision in Grantham.” Phase one of the development will see the creation of seven outdoor tennis courts – four artificial grass and three artificial clay. The second phase will see the new indoor tennis centre built with all its additional facilities and four mini red hard courts. This phase will also add two more artificial clay courts outside. Work on the scheme will start in June. The total project will be completed and the new tennis club will open in March, 2014. “Andrew Castle is a friend of Grantham Tennis Club and a Patron of the charity which has been set up to promote tennis in the community. He is certainly no stranger to getting his tennis kit on and playing a few points with our club members and guests,” Lianne said.

Husqvarna Professional Battery Series In recognition of the continued growth of the com¬mercial landscaping and groundcare market globally, Husqvarna is introducing new specialist teams in all countries with advanced commercial markets. Kevin Ashmore Commercial Landscaping & Groundcare man¬ager heads up the enhanced UK team of commercial and technical support specialists who together will focus on develop¬ing business in this key market sector. “Our new team will work to develop close relationships with commercial users and appropriate local specialist dealers so everyone gains. Superb products with great performance and efficiency backed up by excellent aftersales service with a real grip and understanding on what is really needed when it comes to future product development” explained Kevin. “Commercial operators need products that not only deliver high work rates and quality finishing but wherever possible can reduce costly man hours and maximise profitability. Our focus on battery power over the past few years has allowed us to create an excellent product range for ourselves and we want to continue to evolve this.” – Kevin Ashmore. The Husqvarna professional battery series combines zero emissions with lightweight operation for demanding professionals. Delivering the same power, performance and reliability you would expect from Husqvarna petrol machines, these cordless machines operate with re-chargeable Li-ion batteries. Battery power provides a number of different benefits to the user. Low noise levels, an emission free working environment, low vibration levels and optimised ergonomics all help to make a more enjoyable working experience. You can now enjoy up to 35 minutes of continuous operation on a single charge from the powerful Li-ion battery. Our savE™ energy saving mode optimises run time and lets you get the most out of every charge.

The T536LiXP and the 536LiXP are two lightweight, high-performance Husqvarna battery powered chainsaws. The T536LiXP is a professional arborist only, top handle machine with a high chain speed and petrol performance. Features include a flip-up tank cap and a second belt eyelet making it quick and easy to connect the saw to a climbing harness, a simple to operate, intuitive keypad and an effective inertia-activated chain brake. The 536LiXP back handle version is ideal for commercial use, agriculture and utility applications. A powerful brushless motor delivers superb petrol performance and a maximum chain speed of 20m/s, which is reduced to 15m/s in savE™ mode to prolong battery runtime in less demanding conditions. The 536LiL and 536LiR are commercial grass trimmers from the Husqvarna battery series. These machines are low-weight, high performance with powerful brushless motors for heavy duty commercial use as well as agriculture, horticulture and utility applications. Two way rotation means the rotational direction of the trimmer head can be changed at the push of a button, directing grass away from walkways or out of bunkers on a golf course. The two machines differ as the 536LiL features a loop handle in contrast to the 536LiR’s bike handle. The latter also comes with a Balance 35B harness for improved comfort and ergonomics. The BLi 110, 36V / 3,0Ah Li-Ion battery is interchangeable between all Husqvarna battery products, meaning you can switch from your chainsaw to your trimmer quickly and with ease. Recommended with the BLi 110 battery is the QC 330, 330W / 100 to 240 V rated quick charger to get the best results in the shortest time.

New for 2014 The Husqvarna back pack battery models BLi 520X and BLi 940X are for those who want to work all day without the need to recharge. Your battery chainsaw, trimmer and hedge trimmer can all be powered by the back pack batteries making these a versatile all-day worker. Perfect ergonomics are supplied through the adjustable height/pivoting hip belt and shoulder harness. Connection to the machine is through a specially weighted adapter to ensure machine balance so that when in use with the back pack it is not affected. The adapter also features a battery status indicator.

BLi50

536LiL & 536LiR T536LiXP & 536LiXP

The Husqvarna BLi 520X and BLi 940X are both high performance 36V LiIon batteries. The BLi 520X has energy of 520Wh, a battery capacity of 14,4 Ah and a charging time of 130min (with QC 330) with the weight being 5.9 kg. If all day operation is what you need the BLi 940X boasts an energy of 940, a 26,1 Ah battery capacity, a 235min charging time (with QC330) and weighs 6.7kg. Husqvarna in addition to the BLi520X and BLi940X back pack batteries launches the new high capacity 4.2 ah BLi50 integrated battery. The BLi150 gives 40% more run time yet with the same weight as the current BLi 110 (3.0 Ah) battery. Husqvarna now offer the complete battery solution with both integrated and back pack options to suit and job. Also new for 2014 is the Husqvarna 536Li HD60X professional battery hedge trimmer. This model features a pivoting rear handle and petrol equivalent performance. The 536Li HD60X can be powered by either the new BLi150 (4.2 Ah) integrated battery or either of the new back pack batteries. A high torque motor and 4000 1/min blade speed gives excellent cutting performance. The 536Li HD60X has a cutting length of 60cm and a tooth opening of 30mm.

DIANE MACLEAN FOREST OF LIGHT 2012 KEELE UNIVERSITY Forest of Light was created to commemorate Keele University’s 50th anniversary in 2012 and to celebrate the cultural and national diversity of the students. The commission was won through an open competition. The sculpture stands in Union Square, in the centre of the University, surrounded by the Student Union, the Chapel and the main Library. The sculpture is an installation, composed of a total of 50 polished stainless steel columns, 40 of which, ranging in height from 5 metres to 2 metres, radiate out from a central area. In the centre, a circular stainless steel seat is supported by a further 10 short columns. The seat is engraved with the university motto: “Search for truth in the company of friends 1962 - 2012”. Colour change lighting beams out from under the seat and from LEDs set into the paving, illuminating the sculpture in darkness hours. The paving design around the sculpture was a collaboration between RPS and the artist. The design had to accommodate existing services underground and to respect a listed building in the vicinity. A substantial substructure under the paving ensures the stability and safety of the work. Fabrication and engineering design was by Birch Engineering, with whom the artist has worked successfully on many public and private art commissions since 1990. Lighting was by Eurolighting. Good news for APL Landscapers as Government supports TrustMark It’s good news for the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) as the Government has committed to supporting TrustMark (TM). As the only specialist landscape member of TM, the national quality badge for reputable tradesmen in the domestic RMI (repair, maintenance and improvement) sector, APL The positive act comes via the publication of the Government’s Industrial Strategy for Construction that announces growth within the TM scheme. The changes are to include a greater proportion of the industry, and promotion of the new core criteria standards as well as the industry and consumer groups that support them. Recognised by TM for its vigorous promotion of the scheme and support in improving consumer awareness and building positive perceptions of the landscaping industry, APL is well placed for establishing the baseline landscaper standards. HTA Business Development Manager Donna Hanlon comments “Of an estimated 2 million jobs carried out in 2012 by TM registered

Fertile ground for sport The Middle East and Eastern Europe are catching up fast with Western playing surface quality Synthetic sportsturf took a huge stride forward at the turn of the year when Premiership rugby club Saracens chose artificial grass for the match pitch at its Allianz Park stadium in North London. The third generation (3G) artificial grassplaying surface has drawn unstinting praise from coaches and players alike for the trueness of its playing characteristics. Saracens CEO Edward Griffiths was even moved to say: “Artificial turf transformed hockey, and it will do the same for rugby.” The drive for more community sport year-round is moving synthetic turf up specifiers’ agendas as they seek surfaces that can withstand intensive use from clubs, schools, universities and elite squads throughout the week. The Government is also committed to funding the development of grass-roots sport and funding streams are available for pitch projects that can demonstrate community involvement. After its footballing false dawns in the 1970s and 80s, artificial grass technology has advanced to the stage where the UK now exports its manufacturing expertise to developing nations in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Heading the charge, SIS Pitches is helping to carve out the future of sports turf provision in countries keen to step on to football’s world stage as the game goes truly global. Not only by manufacturing and installing fully engineered bespoke synthetic playing surfaces but by developing and laying down natural grass by the hectare in developing states. Here too, SIS Pitches has anticipated demand. Its Middle East and European offices can co-ordinate the mass transit of turf across borders to deliver truckloads of natural grass quickly, effectively and often to extremely tight schedules. Its team of specialist installers delivers sporting provision that meets the exacting standards of football and rugby world governing bodies. When climatic extremes prevail, natural and synthetic turf science and technology must make the grade. The

grasses that SIS selects for its natural surfaces for example are bred to withstand witheringly hot temperatures or Arctic chill because the countries where they lay them require such resistance to ensure minimal disruption to their sporting schedules.

Turnkey solutions SIS has developed total solutions for its customers – delivering turnkey projects that embrace greenfield site engineering works, perimeter fencing, floodlighting and even multi-coloured site logos sown into synthetic surfaces. After project handover, the contractor often continues its involvement with the client, maintaining pitches using its fleet of purpose-built machinery and equipment. Football authorities praised the performance of pitches at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, held last year, mainly in Azerbaijan’s capital city Baku, the first time the event had been held in Europe since the tournament’s inception in 2008. Both FIFA and the Azerbaijan Football Association (AFA) remarked on the excellence of playing characteristics and the durability of condition of the 8 Km Stadium and training pitches, which SIS Eastern Europe (SIS EE) installed, often in extreme conditions, to pressing timescales, and on budget. “The Bermuda pitch installed at the 8 Km stadium, endured a testing time during the tournament, hosting 11 matches over 22 days, with activity also including 22 half-hour warm-ups and 22 warm-downs. It was the most widely used throughout the event, not only hosting qualifying matches but also all the quarter and semi-finals, more than the three sites where artificial FIFA 2-Star standard pitches were used - the Dalgha Arena, Bayil Stadium and Shafa Stadium. The AFA also awarded SIS Eastern Europe Ltd the contract to build a natural grass pitch at the 30,000-seater Bakcell arena. The project included the construction of a reinforcement system to withstand the heavy match traffic experienced during the tournament. Construction work began once the

contractor mobilised materials from Holland, the UK, Germany, Portugal and Turkey. Transfer of turf from across Europe is costly and often it doesn’t travel well, so SIS had to ensure safe and secure transit. Bermuda seed was selected for the 8 Km Stadium to be used initially, as in summer, when seeding took place, temperatures can reach 50oC with 90% humidity. SIS’s maintenance expertise; knowledge of the best seed to use; sowing time and how to manage disease properly all proved pivotal to the project. SIS overseeded with ryegrass at the end of the September, ready for the winter, which in contrast to the humid summer temperatures are consistently between -5 and –10oC. SIS transported 89 truckloads of turf for FC Baku from Germany, the biggest logistics operation it had ever undertaken – an 11-day journey that involved maintaining the turf in prime condition and safely negotiating the cross-border difficulties of travelling through Georgia, Turkey, Romania and Azerbaijan. The contractor constructed a stadium pitch and four training fields, two of them with heating systems. The referee training pitch, located at the Sports Academy, was also sown with Bermuda and was so well received that teams requested to also use the surface as a training site. The quality of SIS’s pitch aftercare and maintenance allowed them to grow in properly, prepare them for play and allow them to recover from wear sustained during the tournament. The success of the project prompted the AFA to order two further training pitch constructions post-tournament, which have already reached completion. SIS Pitches reports burgeoning demand for elite level stadium pitches under a strategy by Middle Eastern states to drive up the standard of football in home leagues and construct stadia to serve a global audience. The King Abdullah Sports City project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is the latest project nearing completion. The 60,000-seat stadium is the centrepiece of the larger multi-sports complex commissioned by the Saudi king (the stadium named in his honour), which

will host football, athletics and indoor sporting fixtures. The project is being delivered through a joint venture between Belgian contractors BESIX and local firm Al Muhaidib Contracting, with SIS Middle East Llc contracted to construct four natural grass pitches - the main stadium pitch and three additional ones circling the stadium structure. All parties are working flat-out to meet the tight deadline set to ensure early completion. “The stadium was originally planned for sign-off in October 2014 but the works were brought forward a year,” explains David Ball, Managing Director of SIS Middle East Llc. “Works are being delivered round the clock to get it ready in time.” Construction of the three training pitches started on 1 June and were set for completion by 15 August,” says Ball. “The grass will be sprigged with Bermuda 419 stolons imported from our turf farm in the UAE. “Work on the main stadium pitch is scheduled for October, the grass harvested in jumbo rolls from the onsite turf farm and then laid in the stadium.” The King Abdullah Sports City project bolsters the already strong presence of SIS in the Middle East, where the company also maintain surfaces for two football clubs in Dubai - Al Wasl FC and the Al Nasr SC – both longstanding clubs with rich histories in the capital. The SIS turf farm is located in Ras alKhaimah about a one-hour drive north from Dubai. “Here we grow 90,000m2 of Bermuda 419 turf and some 20,000 m2 of Paspallum,” says Ball. “Both species are supplied to the local landscape market but are also used for our own sports projects in the Gulf Cooperation Council. We transported grass from the turf farm at Dubai, via Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, for six pitches we constructed last year at Basrah Sports City in Iraq, while we’ve also shipped grass to Jeddah and Kuwait and locally for Emirates Airlines cricket facilities in Dubai.”

PRESS RELEASE

A new ‘heritage’ look for Witton Street June 2013

Northwich’s history has been brought to life following an extensive public realm improvement scheme. All paving was grouted using Flowpoint – the renowned flowable grout from Ultrascape. The Cheshire West and Chester Council scheme has transformed the area with traditional paving, new street furniture and public art features. It has reintroduced a more traditional feel that enhances the setting of its historic buildings. 20th century paving patterns that once characterised the street scene and re-laid porphyry setts both formed part of the new improvements. Councillor Helen Weltman said: “We are using high quality materials that will stand the test of time and that we hope will set the quality standard for future enhancements of the town centre.” Ultrascape Flowpoint was specified for use on the scheme due to its suitability for irregular joints and professional results that provide a construction life in excess of 40 years, as it meets and exceeds the requirements of BS 7533. Due to the rapid setting performance, paving grouted with Flowpoint can be opened to pedestrians in just 1 hour and vehicular traffic after only 4 hours, minimising disruption. The product is suitable for almost all paving types, including yorkstone, granite and porphory which were all used on this scheme. It is fast and efficient to apply leaving a perfect, stain free finish. Ideal for wide or narrow joints, Flowpoint can accommodate widths of 5-50mm and depths of up to 200mm in a single pass. It is therefore, just as equally suited to irregular granite setts as it is to large profile stone paving. In addition, Flowpoint is also available in ECO, offering all the regular benefits of the grout but containing 20% recycled material, significantly reducing the consumption of virgin aggregates a must if seeking BREEAM or CEEQUAL accreditation. For further information on Ultrascape Flowpoint or any other products from their range, please visit www.ultrascape.co.uk or call 01827 871871. Concrete & Stonework

Durable Pointing with Rapid Application in a Day Wickstead Developments wanted this exclusive new residential property to have a good looking riven sandstone patio and pathways around it for the long-term, without worrying about weed growth and boring insect damage. The project was also nearing completion in the cold, wet Spring of 2013, so the Contractor needed a system that could still be used and completed in wet weather and at lower than seasonal temperatures, but was still fast to apply and would then harden quickly to allow continued access for other finishing trades to the property. NCC Streetscape recommended vdw 800 Paving Joint Mortar in a contrasting natural sand colour to meet all of the difficult application requirements and to provide the optimum aesthetics and ensure long-term, weed free durability of the natural stone paving.

24 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 4

Vdw 800 Paving Joint Mortar is an advanced epoxy-bound sand based pointing and grouting material and its easy slurry application makes it extremely fast and also selfcompacting into the joints, which also saves considerable pointing time on site. Additionally, as it is non-staining and not cement based, the cleaning requirements for the paved surfaces on completion are also greatly reduced and as a result there is no contaminated water run-off, nor any potentially damaging cement blockages in any adjacent drainage system. John O’Conner supports channel challenge

RHINO SURVIVES TRACTOR TEST

£27m of new contracts for John O’Conner

John O’Conner, the Welwyn based grounds maintenance company is supporting a cross channel swim in memory of student James Harley from Ware, who sadly passed away aged 19.

The manufacturer of the Rhino water fountain, Watership Down Technologies (WDT), has gone to extraordinary lengths to prove the anti-vandal properties and strength of the product.

John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance, the successful family owned, Hertfordshire based grounds maintenance company, has landed new contracts and extensions to existing clients worth £27m.

In August 2013 a team of six brave local friends and family will be attempting to swim the 32 kilometres across the English Channel in James’s memory. As well as training hard during the week with pool sessions and hundreds of cold showers, the team are also training at weekends in Dover Harbour where they have endured unreasonably cold conditions and swarms of jellyfish! For more information on the channel swim attempt please visit the team’s website: www.swimforjames.wordpress.com

Hitched between two tractors at John Deere’s UK headquarters in Langar, Nottinghamshire, two of the Rhino’s steel glass fillers (spouts) were screwed together to form a tow bar attached via heavy duty tow ropes to a 20 ton John Deere 9460R tractor and a 12 ton, 7230R tractor, a total of 690 horse power. WDT managing director, Barrington Ward said: “We are convinced that the Rhino water fountain is the most durable on the market and we wanted to demonstrate this in an eye-catching and dramatic way.

The new wins include The Aldwyck Housing Group, Hightown Praetorian Church Housing Association, Midland Heart Housing Ltd and The Red Kite Community Housing Association. Aylesbury Vale District Council, East Herts DC, Hertsmere Borough Council and Alexandra Palace are new or expanded contracts. On the corporate side it has won the prestige Misubishi headquarters at Welham Green. For further information on John O’Conner Ground Maintenance please contact: 01438 717175 – www.johnoconner.co.uk

Recycled Design Makes a Stunning Entrance at Manchester International Festival STUNNING contemporary street furniture made for the roof terrace of Manchester International Festival has been designed using Stokbord® recycled plastic sheet and board following a competition among design students from Manchester School of Art. Liverpool-based plastics recycler Centriforce worked alongside the students to come up with the striking outdoor seating for the prestigious roof terrace at the showcase Glass House venue in Manchester’s Albert Square. To win the competition the team of students presented to a ‘Dragon’s Den’-style panel representing senior University teaching staff, Manchester designers, MIF, and Centriforce. A total of 60 seats were fabricated with the help of Ferrious, the leading Manchester bespoke furniture design company responsible for creating the ‘look’ for Festival Square this year.

bombed’ benches, vintage armchairs, and recycled lighting. The finished design for the benches combines contemporary beauty with practicality to reflect the recycling theme. Paul Tempest, designer with Ferrious explains: “The students have come up with an innovative and practical piece of design by using the Stokbord sheets as fins so that rainwater drains off the furniture. At the same time the benches are heavy enough to be stable and wind-resistant. They also look great with a real industrial and contemporary feel.

makes a stunning centre piece to the roof garden. We were extremely impressed with their innovative thinking which has used Stokbord in a completely new way to create a very refreshing and unusual street furniture design. “Centriforce is always looking for new and innovative ways to transform our recycled plastic materials into useable and commercially-viable products. The students have really showed they can think creatively to build an endproduct that is attractive, practical and great for the environment.”

Following the event, the furniture will be transferred to the Art School to become a permanent feature of the School’s new roof top garden and should last for many years.

The Year 2 Interior Design and Three Dimensional Design students were challenged to design the furniture using Stokbord because of its robust, practical, weather-proof and environmentally friendly credentials.

Manchester International Festival is being held between 4 and 21 July 2013. MIF is a festival of original, new work and special events and takes place biennially in Manchester, UK. The Festival launched in 2007 as an artist-led, commissioning festival presenting new works from across the spectrum of performing arts, visual arts and popular culture. The Festival also encompasses MIFCreative, the community and learning focused arm of the Festival, bringing MIF to the people and communities of Manchester and learning from them in its turn.

As part of this year’s ‘look’, the Festival Pavilion has been transformed into a haven of upcycled design with ‘fabric

Research unlocks secrets of successful perennial meadow establishment

the centre of research work

“Our challenge has been to take the ideas out of the realms of research plots and botanic gardens and into some of our most cash strapped and challenging urban landscapes. We are currently working with over 200 inherently robust enough to thrive under a meadow management regime. At the same time as being cost effective, these new meadows need to be beautiful, sustainable in normal fertility soils and a combination of controlled experiments and observations we are now emerging with many of the key factors for success. These will ultimately help landscapers and skills to create an almost limitless number of new meadow like landscapes. nectar and pollen values of non native species also looks to seriously question the long held belief that somehow native is always best

The Hive Worcester Library Landscape Grant Associates, landscape architects, design of The Hive Worcester Library The Hive is Europe’s first joint university and public library – a unique academic, educational and learning centre for the City of Worcester and its University. The ‘BREEAM Outstanding’ project was designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios with a distinctive and sustainable landscape design by Grant Associates. Grant Associates’ landscape design brief was to create a high quality landscape environment that would become a distinctive and exciting visitor attraction - a place which would capture a sense of history and place whilst reflecting on the contemporary themes of sustainability and technological innovation. The landscape is based on a strong narrative derived from the local landscape of the River Severn, Malvern Hills and the Elgar trail that inspired Land of Hope and Glory and key storytelling themes: Nature uplifts the spirits - the landscape spaces are arranged to ‘enlighten and delight’ inviting visitors to experience the therapeutic qualities of nature, an encounter with birdsong, scented plants, colourful wildflowers and dragonflies. Healthy water for sustained life - demonstrates to visitors the importance of healthy water for life and the ability of natural systems, not man made chemicals, to take care of this.

Knowledge and Heritage - creates a special sense of place derived from the primary circulation route The Causeway. The two-hectare site comprises a series of islands and belvederes overlooking two landform basins containing rich local damp meadow and The Causeway, an extension of the city wall route, routes circling around and through the Centre. Highlights include: The Water Meadow A wildflower water meadow is the principal landscape, a resource for environmental education, robust enough to deal with seasonal flooding from the river, with low maintenance demands. Locally harvested seeds from a site of special interest include cowslips, orchids, fritillary’s and flag irises

The water meadow also serves a practical purpose dealing with sustainable urban drainage; filtering rainwater and surface water through reed bed swales and working with the environmental engineering of the building by virtue of the evaporative cooling process with prevailing southwesterly winds. Habitat Islets Two habitat islets emerge from the water meadow. One reached by bridge from the children’s library creates a place where children can read and be informed in a stimulating natural environment surrounded by the wonder of nature, scented plants, wild life nests and a mini orchard. The second is a wildlife haven with large canopy trees and coppice-planting providing secluded nesting and roosting and includes the rare Black Poplar Trees. The Causeway A safe and secure network of pedestrian friendly routes circle around and through the Library and History Centre, broadening out to form seating terraces or outdoor rooms such as the café terrace by the Belvedere. The route includes seating areas, and a causeway bridge and footbridge to connect adjoining sites. Peter Chmiel, director, Grant Associates said: “The landscape of The Hive Worcester Library and History Centre aims to be an leading example of sustainable design, including SUDS drainage, water attenuation, productive urban gardens, locally sourced materials and plant species, and careful landscape management to enhance species diversity and ecological richness.”

BRETT LANDSCAPING HELPS PROJECT 180 TO TURN AROUND A SHEFFIELD SCHOOL An ambitious community project in Sheffield, designed to give a primary school’s courtyard a much needed makeover, has been made possible with the assistance of Brett Landscaping. Pipworth Community Primary School is located in one of the most disadvantaged areas of Sheffield. The local education authority had applied for national funding to rebuild the school, but was told that funds would likely not be available for another 10 years, leading Pipworth to look into redecorating two specific areas: the school hall and an outdoor courtyard. Project 180 – the community outreach wing of Sheffield’s Hope City church – was approached to assist based on its passion for regeneration projects and its close ties to the school. Pipworth was one of the first schools the church worked with, assisting with afterschool clubs and self-esteem classes. “We are committed to helping create better environments for local people, and the thought of Pipworth not getting some much-needed TLC was not an option,” explains Ali Bianchi, director of Project 180. “So we hatched a plan to complete the work in a single day, asking for companies to donate materials free of charge to get around the issue of funding.”

Project 180 focuses on regenerating disadvantaged communities in Sheffield. While previous makeovers had transformed a small public park, a shop and a single mother’s home, Pipworth represented by far the organisation’s most ambitious project to date.

Tackling the problem of weeds in amenity and sports turf Turf managers are charged with producing an attractive, uniform hard wearing grass surfaces. However, no matter the quality of the turf and the thoroughness of the turf management programme, the incursion of weeds into the swathe can compromise all their hard work.

and is, therefore, extremely cost-effective to use. Depending on the application rate selected it is effective on both Group 1 and Group 2 weeds.

Vitax Amenity, the division of Vitax dedicated to turf management and care, offers a complete solution to the problem. It comprising a selection of powerful herbicides and a range of competitively-priced, easy-to-use pedestrianoperated sprayers, purpose designed to deliver precisely the right volume of herbicide to the turf.

The EvenSprey 250 is a battery-operated, threewheel machine featuring a detachable 1115mm boom and a 25 litre tank – enough to treat 500 square metres. A spray lance for spot treatment of weeds is an optional extra.

Effective control requires identification of the weeds, accurate timing of application, correct rates of application and uniformity of application. Identification of the weeds allows both the selection of the best herbicide for the job and the required application rates. Uniformity of application is provided by the calibration systems on the Vitax sprayers (and can be further enhanced by the use of spray markers from Vitax which provide a visible indication of areas that have been sprayed, missed or overlapped). Herbicides currently available from Vitax Amenity include ‘Esteem’ and ‘Estermone’. ‘Esteem’ provides a powerful 3-way mix of herbicides and is the ideal choice for use on difficult weeds such as Broad-leaved Plaintain, Creeping Buttercup and Daisy. It can be used from February through to November. ‘Estermone’ is a highly efficient turf weedkiller. It requires comparatively low application rates

Application of either is simple via the EvenSprey pedestrian-operated sprayers from Vitax.

The EvenSprey 300 is slightly larger, four-wheel machine, with a 30 litre tank. It is equipped with a 1600mm boom which is designed to fold away for storage and transportation. The boom can be used at full width or, where appropriate, with just the right hand section engaged. The 300 comes with a spray lance as standard. Both machines are fitted with grass-friendly pneumatic typres and both have been designed to minimise the variables associated with sprayer calibration. The design allows them to deliver even application at a ‘comfortable walking speed’ (about 2.25mph or 1mps). “The combination of these herbicides and the sprayers offers a exceptionally efficient and costeffective way of controlling virtually any type of weeds in turf,” said Mike King, Sales Manager. “We also back all our products with comprehensive technical service so if any groundsman has problems, we’re always there to help.” Vitax Amenity also supplies a range of products developed to help users get the very best out of their sprayers. These include the Vitamark and TabBlue spray pattern indicators, which

help make sure that spraying is complete and accurate, a Defoamer which prevents potentially harmful spillages and speeds up the filling process, and a specially formulated Tank Cleaner which thoroughly cleans the machines to help keep them working at maximum efficiency. The weed control products are just a few of the turf management products available from Vitax Amenity. In addition, the company provides comprehensive ranges of specialised turf fertilisers, biostimulants and water management products and also markets a range of spreaders, designed to deliver granular and powder fertilisers and other treatments to turf.

NEW PLAY AREA BRINGS COLOUR TO FORMER CEMETERY Sutcliffe Play has created an exciting play area at a challenging and unique site within an old cemetery. Grange Road Play Area in Gillingham, Kent, is situated in the old municipal Grange Road Cemetery which is now closed, having seen its last burial in 1940. The site was granted faculties for the creation of small play areas in 1977 and 1994, one of which was on a concrete ‘raft’. Recently, playground company Sutcliffe Play was challenged with installing exciting new equipment on the site as the old equipment had been tired and dated. Sutcliffe Play installed a wide range of equipment including an oyster roundabout, nest swing, toddler swings, parrot springie, spring seesaw, Toddlerzone unit and a Mission unit. Mission is designed to offer challenging physical play opportunities to help keep children fit and active. The fully modular system includes ropes, nets, platforms and springboards to encourage climbing, traversing and

descending in unique ways for high energy invigorating play. Clare Lanes, Medway Council Greenspaces Development Officer, said: “The colourful new play equipment has been very well received by children from the area. It features both inclusive equipment alongside more challenging elements, and we have seen children of all ages and abilities playing together. “The Mission unit in particular has had a great response, and has encouraged children to play actively and challenge themselves.” The installation was particularly challenging due to the nature of the concrete surface. Sutcliffe Play made the equipment to suit the site in relation to the depth of the concrete pad beneath. Plated footings were attached to extended posts and secured to the pad using chemical fixing bolts. Existing materials on-site were re-used and incorporated into the base where possible to minimise the environmental impact of waste from the site.

SUPER BRIGHT ASTRON SOLAR 40 LED FLOODLIGHT NOW PART OF THE SPALDINGS RANGE Need lighting but lacking available power sockets, the Solar Floodlight can last for hours off one days charge in the sun Lincoln, 31st July 2013 – Spaldings today announced the introduction of the Astron Solar 40 LED Floodlight to their product range. This floodlight can provide light for up to 12 hours when fully charged or after an average day of weather will provide approximately 6 hours of light making it perfect for use all year round. “The Astron Solar 40 LED Floodlight is a simple plug in and go light system, trusted to do its job with little input required. Even on a day when the sun isn’t blazing and as long as it isn’t in the shade it typically charges enough for at least 6 hours of light. The automatic feature will make sure the light turns on as soon as it’s dark until either the sun comes up or the battery empties,” says Mark Kimberley, Groundcare Product Development Coordinator for Spaldings. “Equally so the light is fully portable with the option of manually turning it on and off as required by remote control, so it can be of use where ever you go.” The Solar Floodlight is made to last. It’s got an IP rating of IP56 meaning that it’s protected against dust and can deal with strong jets of water from all directions and still work. So you could use this light on a ship’s deck and it wouldn’t bat an eyelid. The floodlight is highly versatile and suitable for a wide array of situations especially since the weather is not an issue and neither is the need for power sockets. “There are no ends of uses for this floodlight. It can be used indoors, outdoors for security, lighting for equestrian outdoor schools, sign lighting, features and even for emergency backup lighting in the home. That’s only considering it as a fixed system, but adding the portable uses too makes for a very long list,” says Kimberley. “This product is therefore a fantastic addition to our range as it works well in both the Agricultural and Groundcare sectors.” For details of these and other products supplied by Spaldings, contact 01522 507 500, email: gcsales@spaldings.co.uk or view the catalogue at www.spaldings.co.uk

KUBOTA INTRODUCE MODERN VERSION OF CLASSIC TRACTOR

K

ubota, the leading manufacturer of agricultural and groundcare machinery in the UK, has introduced an updated version of its popular L4100 tractor.

For over a decade, Kubota’s L-Series tractors have been at the forefront of the industry and extremely popular thanks to their reliability, performance and price point. The introduction of an improved L4100 will continue to add to this legacy. The original L4100 was discontinued in 2011, but increased demand for a unit of its the size, concept and cost has led to the company bringing to the market an updated model to satisfy demand. The machine features Kubota’s exceptionally reliable and powerful 41HP E-TVCS engine, which offers the power and torque to complete any job whilst keeping emissions low. The new version also sports a sleek new cab design that helps to improve visibility. With heavy steering being one of the main causes of fatigue in users, Kubota has invested heavily in developing the L4100’s hydrostatic power steering system. This ensures the L4100 is responsive, light and smooth to use even when working with heavy loads. The machine has been fitted with a Dynamic Balancer to reduce noise output and also offer lower vibrations for increased user comfort over extended periods of use. Adrian Langmead, Business Development Manager at Kubota, commented: “The L4100 was an extremely popular model and we’re pleased to be able to introduce a newer version with some great new modifications. “Not only is the engine more powerful, but thanks to the Dynamic Balancer and hydrostatic power steering it is quieter, has lower vibrations and is easier to steer, meaning it can be used comfortably for longer periods of time. The extra large fuel tank also ensures that users spend more time working without the need to refuel.”
