Function And Beauty With Otterbine The most natural water quality management solution is aeration and whether it’s function, beauty or both you’re after when considering an aerating fountain, industrial aerator or diffused air system, Otterbine has something for every pond, lake and water feature. Aerating fountains Designed to give the best of both worlds by offering function and beauty, Otterbine’s surface spray aerators, which include the Gemini, Sunburst and Saturn, can operate in as little as 75cm of water. This range is particularly popular with golf courses, commercial complexes and landscape contractors thanks to its ability to provide an attractive display with the capability to manage severe aquatic environments.

Industrial surface and subsurface aerators Otterbine’s High Volume surface spray aerator is the most powerful surface aerator available and has consistently proven to be ideal for managing the toughest of aquatic environments wherever that may be. Also part of the surface and subsurface industrial aerators range, the Sub-Triton eliminates bad odours by providing lateral flow and mixing of the complete water column to deliver oxygen to the lake or pond bed in water depths of between 1m and 2.5m. Fractional series The Fractional five-in-one aerating system has the highest performance rate of any fractional aerator on the market, yet it’s efficient and cost effective to run; therefore it’s easy to see why the Fractional is Otterbine’s best-selling aerator for maintaining water quality at healthy levels in small and medium ponds.

Diffused aeration Otterbine’s diffused aeration range pumps air to the bottom of the water’s bed without creating a ripple on the surface. The new Air Flo 3 has quiet on-shore compressors and with no electrical components in the water and is best suited for recreational lakes and ponds, where wading or activities such as swimming, occur. Energy-efficient and requiring minimal maintenance, the Air Flo 3 offers flexibility, too, working in virtually any configuration at depths from 6ft to 40ft. Silicon Valley’s Newest Rooftop Park Brings Workplace Amenities To New Heights DES A+E Completes One of Silicon Valley’s Largest Rooftop Parks The campus is the 2nd largest office project under construction in Silicon Valley.

D

ES Architects + Engineers (DES A+E) just completed the Moffett Place High Garden — a two-acre rooftop park — in the heart of Silicon Valley. It is one of the largest elevated parks ever completed in the region. Parking Deck to Greenspace DES A+E designed the High Garden to transform what would ordinarily be an underutilized parking deck into a green oasis. Instead of 250 parking spots, it has two-acres of greenspace. The park is one of the central amenities to the Moffett Place campus, which was recently leased to Google in its entirety.

16 Landscape & Urban Design

Covering the top of a two-level parking structure, the High Garden is a departure from typical rooftop gardens in that it provides recreation opportunities for up to 650 users. It integrates active uses with basketball and volleyball courts for team sports. Passive uses include a community vegetable garden and a meditation garden complete with meandering rows of bamboo. Whether playing an afternoon pick-up game, walking with a co-worker, or meeting outside amongst the trees, the design intends for visitors to use the park.

Rooftop Park

A

California Park

An elliptical running track loops around the park’s perimeter doubling as the main means of circulation and usable fitness space. With visitors raised 30 feet in the air, the path draws people towards the roof’s edge and showcases the views of the adjacent preserved heritage trees and the Santa Cruz Mountains off in the distance. Branching off from the running track, a raised walking deck bends in towards the park’s center and leads visitors to a sequence of experiential settings including a putting green, volleyball court, and a large greenspace. The greenspace is inspired by the local Peninsula hills with undulating berms and tree groves. Landscape & Urban Design

T

hese natural features add spatial definition and a sense of place. Criss crossing through the greenspace, gravel pathways connect people to shaded seating areas that provide sheltered work spaces. Alternatively, the open grass areas brings flexibility, acting as an amphitheatre for company events or simply as a space to lay out a picnic blanket. Native and adapted grasses, shrubs, and vines — about 20 different species — celebrate the diversity of the California

landscape and reduce irrigation needs. Particular plant varieties, including Cape Reed and Feather Reed Grass, attract beneficial insects and birds while providing food and habitat. Where irrigation is necessary, reclaimed water is used exclusively resulting in no impact on potable water supplies with the exception of the vegetable garden. The rooftop also contributes significantly to improved stormwater management and reductions to the heat island effect.

Rooftop Park

E

nhanced Views

Connecting the High Garden to the campus, the background landscape — adjacent trees, office towers, and mountains — is incorporated into the composition of the garden and provides a layered experience for the users. From within the park, you are visually connected to the campus and the surrounding natural environment. From the nearby office tower, large sweeping gestures such as the elevated walking deck and the radial organization of the community garden provide visual interest.

The High Garden is a place where campus users can separate themselves from the workplace while still feeling connected to the greater landscape. A Greener Model The High Garden introduces a healthier, greener landscape model for corporate campuses as it provides a new place for people to connect to one another and the environment. Since the concept has proved successful and attractive to tech employees, DES A+E is currently designing four additional rooftop parks, the highest of which will be raised nine stories in the air overlooking the San Francisco Bay. www.des-ae.com Landscape & Urban Design

with Streetlife’s Solid Series Surf & Podium Isles on the Ernst Wigforss Square former desserted parking lot in Halmstad (Zweden)

The Solid Series is one of Streetlife’s successful program for Street Furniture, Tree Products as well as Pedestrian & Bicycle Bridges. The significant use of the FSC® certified hardwood in 7x7cm wooden slats, offers this collection a more slender look than our successful Rough&Ready range slats (7x15cm), it offers bodiful furniture elements for public space without loosing the solidness and sturdiness of its appearance. The products in this Collection offer a huge number of modules to facilitate a more holistic design. The Solid Products have a refined detailing. Practiced mounting techniques in standard modules enable bespoke elements to be achieved with clean joints and ground fixings. In most cases, Solid beams are invisibly mounted in the specially designed Streetlock® comb system with anti-theft flanged nuts. Material combinations of wood with CorTen steel give a warm atmosphere to its surroundings, while wood combined with galvanized or coated steel or aluminum creates a contemporary, urban image. On the next page some Solid products are shown. The range also extends to products such as Tree Planters, Green Benches, Picnic Tables, Bicycle Racks, Terrace Systems and Deck Material.

The products shown are protected by Int. Model Depots, Patents and Copyrights.

Streetlife’s Solid Design

Solid Picnic table with solid supports

Solid Love Bench with tapered aluminium base

With the Solid Seat Strip one can create other functions within a single architectural element besides seating. Bicycle parking can be included tree holes, planters and podiums areas. Establishing several functions in one long line it creates a tidy and refined design. The Solid slats for the seatings are recessed mounted in the steel with an anti-theft Streetlock® comb. For more information on the options available and technical requirements please don’t hesitate to contact one of our architectural advisors.

The Solid Bench has different widths, so one can create single or double seats. Shown here is the 12-slats Solid Bench, combined with the Soft Back. In contrast to the more architectural Quatro Back -consisting of 4 Solid slats placed in quadrant-, the Soft Back has a convexly planed termination on top, creating a softer appearance than the Quattro Back.

Solid Tree Planter in both round and square forms available

Solid Staple Bench Solid Staple Benches comes in various lengths of 2, 3 of 4 meters. The longest bench has a special construction to support the length. Solitude Bench has an ergonomic back support for more seating comfort

The Solid Edge System is first applied on the campus of the Drexel University in Philadelphia. The base consists of powder coated steel, in which the walls are placed at an angle. Green Isles of various sizes can be created with it. A sitting edge is placed on top of the walls; there are choices in various seating depths (8, 10 of 12 slats). This new system is included in the new Streetlife Collection 2016-2017, which will be released in May.

The X-Table are Solid tables with angled supports, which run elegantly from the table to a bench on each side. The tabletop consists of 12 Solid slats of 100% FSC® hardwood. The slats are mounted on the anti-theft Streetlock® comb system by the means of flange nuts. The 7x7cm Solid slats create a thick, solid wooden tabletop. The supports come in matt blasted aluminium or galvanised or coated steel. Meet&Work System consisting of benches, tables and Shrubtubs

Victoriana Wins In Griffin Glasshouses’s 50th Year

ales of bespoke structures from Griffin Glasshouses in its 50th year have been at record levels and the key driver has been continued consumer demand for the Victorian style which has led to a new development for 2016. The key reminders of this historic period are highly decorative spandrels, steep pitches to roofs, narrow glass panes and highly styled finials and ridges.

34 Landscape & Urban Design

In an effort to reinforce this the company is launching a new roof specifically for lean-to constructions with a 35 degree roof pitch. “It is more practical to fit as a lean-to without compromising the Victorian style,” says Linda Lane, manging director of Griffin Glasshouses. In 2015 the company launched new Victorian styles work-benches with high decorative cast aluminium legs.

“It is all part of this increasing demand from gardeners for a nostalgic look to their glasshouses but made using thoroughly 21st Century no-maintenance materials. They are all produced from the highest quality, maintenance free aluminium at the Ropley factory. All bolts and fixings are completely hidden and the frames powder coated to any colour the customer chooses,” says Linda.

S

he is the daughter of the founder of the business and today is helped by her cousin, Paul Smith, technical director, and her brother Peter who is installations director.

Other factors in the company’s success have been the National Garden Scheme collection of glasshouses and customer demand driven by exhibiting at the Chelsea and Hampton Court flower shows. Griffin Glasshouses create beautiful bespoke glasshouses for discerning gardeners in the UK and internationally. With more than 50 years’ experience in the industry, the family run business based in Ropley near Winchester in Hampshire, offers a range of unique design glasshouses from lean-to, free-standing, to its NGS collection. The majority of their made-to- measure designs reflect the specialist features that were common in structures created in the Victorian era.

“We have had some amazing bespoke commissions in 2015 including replicating the historic glasshouses at Cardigan Castle and designing and building structures to accommodate a mini mountain for a customer’s prized collection of Alpine plants. We have also designed and built our smallest glasshouse to date which had a footprint of just 2.1m x 1.5m” adds Linda.

The Magic Of Maples Create a focal point in your outside space with Japanese maple. It’s the perfect choice of tree for any small, compact or courtyard garden, and the Horticultural Trades Association’s (HTA) ’Plant of the Moment’ for April.

J

apanese maples will put on a show throughout the year, starting as soon as foliage unfurls in spring and continuing until their autumn transformation into shades of gold and bronze before they eventually fall. Many acers are commonly called Japanese maples, but their parents could be derived from several different species including Acer japonicum, Acer palmatum, Acer shirasawanum or others. The natural shape and growing habit of their branches make Japanese maples an ideal choice of small tree for gardens or growing in large patio pots. Their leaf shapes, sizes and colours vary immensely. Many have a broad palm shape, but these are often divided and dissected into the most delicate and intricate forms.

36 Landscape & Urban Design

Add to this their wide range of colours, from deep greens to yellow, gold, purple or even variegated patterns and you have huge variety to choose from.

Park Managers

Park Managers: What’s Happening In Your Park? Survey goes live for State of Parks II The report, published in June 2014, revealed a growing risk that some parks could become no-go areas or even sold off, with:

T

he condition, funding and future of the UK’s public parks is coming under fresh scrutiny, two years after the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) groundbreaking State of Parks report.

Local authorities, and in particular park managers, are now being asked to complete a survey to help assess how the UK’s parks are faring in the current economic climate and how things have changed since the 2014 report. The results are expected in the summer. State of UK Parks 2014: Renaissance to Risk? was widely welcomed by the parks sector which, thanks mainly to high response rates to the survey, was hailed as a reliable and trusted picture of park and open space funding across the UK.

42 Landscape & Urban Design

86% of parks managers reporting cuts to revenue budgets;

45% of local authorities considering either selling parks and green spaces or transferring their management to others; and

81% of council parks departments having lost skilled management staff.

HLF Head of Landscapes and Natural Heritage Drew Bennellick said: “The first State of Parks report was widely used to extol the value of public parks, and this was in a large part thanks to the time and dedication of those that completed the survey.

Or have the difficulties become more acute since our last survey? We want to hear from as many park managers as possible to help us get a full and accurate picture of the state of our parks.”

“We want to know how parks have fared since then. Has funding stabilised? Have new income streams helped address the challenges facing parks?

HLF is also conducting a survey of park friends and community groups. Both surveys run from Monday 4th April until Friday 29th April 2016.

Aquadeck Proves Popular For Playgrounds Gripsure, the UK’s leading non slip decking company, produces a range of timber boards, all with the company’s innovative safety design to ensure they don’t get slippery, even in wet weather. Its newest product, Gripsure Aquadeck®, is proving a popular choice for playgrounds. SuDS compliant, it allows rainwater to drain through the board and back into the water course below. Available in a variety of vibrant colours, the boards are also soft underfoot, so offer a more gentle landing than falling onto traditional playground surfaces, like stone or concrete. Chew Magna Primary School near Bristol opted for Gripsure Aquadeck® to link new classrooms with the main school building. Headteacher Annie Spencer said the timber, which goes over a flood plain, has a variety of benefits: “It’s a great surface, which copes well with a lot of traffic. It is also being well used as an outdoor learning area.” Managing Director of Gripsure, Mike Nicholson said: “Traditional rubber infill decking boards can retain up to 0.6 litres of water, which can cause algae to grow. In freezing conditions, wet decking can become even more hazardous as residual water turns to ice. With Gripsure Aquadeck® we can offer a surface that is attractive, hardwearing and safe all year round.” www.gripsure.co.uk

he Great Outdoor Gym Company is looking to work with landscape architects and parks to design in wellness. According to the World Health Organization physical inactivity is one of the top four leading risk factors for health. Globally, 1 in 4 people are not doing the recommended 30 minutes of exercise a week and there are strong links between this and rising epidemic levels of Obesity, Diabetes, Cancer and Heart disease.

W

ith the latest release of SketchUp 2016 we’re integrating Trimble Connect directly into SketchUp. As a refresher, Connect is Trimble’s platform for storing, syncing, referencing, sharing, and collaborating on design/build projects. Sign up for a free account, then start uploading .skp, .pdf, .dxf, .ifc. files. With this integration, we’re packaging the current Trimble Connect Extension into the installer. The TC integration is accessible from the File menu, and will allow users to upload, pull down, and update SKP’s from Trimble Connect project folders. As you’re modelling you can even pull in and update reference SketchUp models as if they were locally hosted components. Learn more about Trimble Connect... In SketchUp 2016, a context click on a component gives you the opportunity to reload (or swap out) a new component directly from 3D Warehouse. This action will reload every instance of that component in your model (similar to the same action in the Components Browser), so it’s a helpful method for working with proxy models.

Connect With Sketchup 2016 And if your component was downloaded from 3D Warehouse, you can also use the context-click to quickly access its 3DWH details page. With this release, LayOut’s reference objects are now web friendly. That means your LayOut projects can reference and update files that are stored and synced with services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and Trimble Connect Sync. When you reference a file from any of these services (.skp or otherwise), LayOut will notify you when an update is available for your ‘web reference.’ Say goodbye to missing references when different people are working on the same .layout document within a cloud sync folder that also contains the referenced files. We’re proud to announce our first step towards an extension ecosystem for LayOut. Using this new API, developers can now create and customize .layout files from SketchUp models.

Practically, this means that other applications can import or export the *.layout file format using the C API. (This includes creating a .layout file from SketchUp.). We have several sample scripts for developers to try out at release, along with a blog post where they can learn more. Learning and utilising SketchUp’s inference engine makes for fast and precise modelling. In this release, we’ve oiled that engine to provide slicker inferencing and locking across the board. Industry first for Addagrip Terraco Ltd BBA certification received for Resin Bound Surfacing range. Addagrip Terraco Ltd are delighted to announce that their Addaset, Addabound and Terrabound Resin Bound porous surfaces have all achieved BBA certification, making them the first and only Resin Bound Surfacing manufacturer to achieve this standard. BBA certification is widely known throughout the construction industry as a symbol of quality and reassurance. It is a vital ingredient for product manufacturers to help ensure acceptance with specifiers, building control, Local Authorities and insurers. The BBA have worked with Addagrip to achieve the approval of their Resin Bound Surfacing through the BBA’s robust testing and assessment schemes. Roger Critchley, Managing Director of Addagrip Terraco Ltd, says “With the continuing growth in the use of seamless Resin Bound Surfacing over the last 10 years, we have seen many new suppliers, manufacturers and DIY suppliers enter the marketplace. The BBA accreditation will set a benchmark for quality resin bound products and installations within the industry. The Addagrip Terraco Resin Bound products are a complete resin and aggregate system, installed by an Addagrip approved contractor to ensure that the correct ratio of resin to aggregate is achieved and the product installed according to our specific guidelines. Gaining the BBA certification has been a long process as we are the first company to invest in what we see as a very significant step forward in the Resin Bound industry. The BBA carried out site visits, inspecting old installations in order to confirm and check their condition after many years use, as well as visiting a live installation to witness the mixing and application process. A further range of independent product testing was also carried out which included permeability testing, as Resin Bound Surfacing is regularly used on SUDS-based schemes.” Addagrip Terraco Ltd views the BBA certification as a major step forward and one that could be potentially game changing for the Resin Bound industry. Sudstech

New Sudstech Paving Offers Unrivalled Porosity

T

Sudstech is one of the latest porous paving products introduced to the SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Solutions) market, with the impressive ability to transfer up to 50,000 litres of water per square metre per hour.

he highly porous, lowmaintenance material is created using sustainable products and is designed to allow the natural infiltration method of the water cycle for an easy and environmentally-friendly drainage system. Suitable for all private and public applications, including domestic driveways, public footpaths, golf clubs and car parks, Sudstech can be used as an alternative to standard asphalt hard landscaping materials, whilst offering the same aesthetics and durability as some of the most established products in the market, with the added benefit of a costeffective water management service. The porous material is created using natural stones sourced in the UK and can be specified in a wide range of colours and finishes, offering a solution to complement or contrast with any architectural colour scheme. The coloured stones are combined with a specially developed resin, which allows rainfall to evenly saturate through the

56 Landscape & Urban Design

surface into the ground and eventually finding its way to the water course. The material also uses three recycled car tyres per square metre to form the sub base layer of the surface. This not only makes the product an environmentally-friendly solution, but it can also be taken up and reused to form a base layer for future projects. Sudstech uses varying grades of angular aggregates to deliver maximised strength and durability for a sleek, porous surface that can withstand all usages without compromising the quality of the material. Sudstech is also unaffected by severe weather conditions, with the rubber sub base layer designed to allow any expansion and contraction caused by the constant freeze/thaw process of water within its voids, so eliminating delamination that can occur in other porous paving. Following many years of research, development and testing, Sudstech conforms to the latest SUDS legislations created alongside the Water Management Act 2010, which requires porous materials

to completely prevent surface water run-off and build up. With its large water capacity, Sudstech can contribute to the control of flooding caused by climate change in domestic areas and other environmental impacts of hard paving water build up. Sudstech has been used for many commercial and domestic schemes, including the new Canary Wharf Crossrail Station’s ‘Living Roof’, as well as sites for the London 2012 Olympics, housing associations, NHS properties, golf courses and landscapes for World Heritage sites. All applications of Sudstech can be modified to meet each specification requirement, such as colour variation and weight loading capacity and can provide up to 9 BREEAM accreditations. Due to its SUDS compliancy, applications of Sudstech do not require planning permission. Further information on Sudstech is available from Langford Direct Ltd. Knotweed Knowhow: How To Identify And Distinguish Between Different Types Of Knotweed Japanese knotweed is an impressive species that grows rapidly to a height of 2 – 3 metres (6-10 feet) in a single season.

I

n the spring, new growth emerges as rapidly growing soft red/purple shoots reminiscent of asparagus spears. The stems are hollow and bamboo-like and can grow as much as 2 cm per day. As the shoots grow into canes the leaves unfurl and the plant turns green, with stem diameters of up to 40 mm (1.6 inches). The stem growth is distinctive with one stem or leaf stem (petiole) per node producing a zigzag pattern in the stem. The extensive rhizome system allows

it consists in scoring the surface creating narrow parallel strikes with diamond-coated discs or a wide range of tools with different profiles

it consists in a process using oxygen and gas. The high-temperature flame (2500 - 3000째C) is applied on the surfaces to be treated, which undergo thermal shock. This makes them dilate and crack. The surface texture will appear rough and embossed. Since this vitrification process improves resistance to weather and erosion. Flaming is especially recommended for exteriors but requires skilful use only marbles that are resistant to sharp temperature changes.

The Reception Gardens At The Botanical Garden Are Blossoming Again

S

pace for Life, which includes the Biodôme, Botanical Garden, Insectarium and Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium, has mandated Lemay’s multidisciplinary team to provide landscape architecture services for a major restoration and redevelopment project of the Reception Gardens and its two main fountains for the Montreal Botanical Garden. The Botanical Garden represents a destination of choice, a privileged space that is part of the three museums comprised in the Space for Life, one of the most prestigious museum institution in Montreal. Since its foundation by Brother Marie-Victorin at the beginning of the

last century, this tourist and scientific hub plays a key role in the social, educational and architectural development of the city. The impact of this restoration project is major for the visitor’s perception and experience, given that the Reception Gardens serve as the main entrance of one of the world’s greatest botanical gardens. The quality and sustainability of the gardens as well as its heritage preservation were some of the design criteria guiding Lemay. The Reception Gardens are an essential part of the Administration Building, designed by Lucien Kérouac (1886 – 1951). This Art Deco-style public building was built in the 1930’s, at a time of crisis in-between wars that required

imagination and solidarity. More precisely, the fountains, built in 1937-1938 and designed by Henri Teuscher, include reliefs of great delicacy carved in granite by sculptor Henri Hébert. The effect of time and oxidation has greatly altered the appearance of these reliefs as well as the exterior basins. Using the best techniques and sustainable materials, a special attention was given to the mechanical and waterproofing aspect of the fountains and their finish. Finally, the octagonal basin as well as the waterfall tanks were highlighted with a brilliant lighting plan to provide a new dimension of the fountains at night. The gardens and accesses remain unchanged, but the repaved alleys were rethink to give way to pedestrians. Vehicles are now forbidden to preserve the serenity of the Reception Gardens that act as a buffer between the city noise and the public garden. The shade plantings, located on both sides of the main aisle and the annual plantings, were redesigned to encourage visitors to wander and reclaim the space as their own. While respecting the history and unique charm of the space, Lemay’s redevelopment concept proposes a new experience and a revamped garden that offers a friendly and lively environment while respecting the best sustainable practices. www.lemayonline.com

Scottish Golf Courses Contribute To Ecological Success Story On Ayrshire Coast After a 33-year absence, a widescale environmental and landscape enhancement project involving nine golf courses along the Ayrshire coast has successfully reintroduced a small but significant population of Small Blue butterflies to the south west of Scotland. The Small Blue (Cupido minimus) is the UK’s smallest resident butterfly. With a wingspan often not exceeding 16mm, its small size makes it vulnerable to local climatic and habitat changes. Although it is classed as not threatened, the Small Blue’s status throughout the UK is declining, with the main colonies being located in the south of England and northwest of Scotland where its only food plant, Kidney Vetch, grows within calcareous grasslands and coastal sand dune systems. Following a building boom in the 1970s and 1980s, the loss of key wildflower habitats in Ayrshire meant that the Small Blue was last seen in the county in 1982. The Scottish Wildlife Trust sought the help of the Ayrshire Sustainability Group, which is made up of nine golf courses plus a number of local businesses and wildlife organisations, to release a colony of the butterflies at their Gailes Marsh Reserve next to Dundonald Links. Key to the project’s success was the establishment of Kidney Vetch wildflowers at each of the project’s locations, with the hope being that the establishment of a semicontinuous corridor of these and other native wild flower species would enable the butterflies to re-colonise across its former range.

66 Landscape & Urban Design

“Unfortunately, Kidney Vetch is a short-lived and vulnerable wild flower which responds poorly to competitor, environmental and habitat pressures,” explains Alistair Eccles, Technical Sales Representative for Germinal in Scotland. “The success of the project therefore depended on using a source of high quality Kidney Vetch seed which could establish vigorously and continue to thrive throughout the newly established wildlife corridor. We were therefore happy to contribute to the project’s success by donating the required Kidney Vetch seed which was specially harvested for us in the UK.” Following the original colony’s release two years ago, the Small Blue remained elusive, with no subsequent sightings reported in the following 12 months. “It was feared that the release colony had simply died out,“ says the Small Blue project’s manager, Gill Smart of the Scottish Wildlife Trust. “However, several sightings of the iconic butterfly last summer, including at Dundonald Links, have shown that the original colony not only survived, but also went on to produce two generations of offspring which have successfully dispersed along the Kidney Vetch corridor from the original release site.”

The project has expanded to promote wildflower corridors in general, beyond where Small Blue could reach, and is now named the Irvine to Girvan Nectar Network (IGNN). This has been funded for the last two years by The R&A which has extended its support by committing to the project for a further three years (to March 2018) explains Jo Kingsbury of RSPB, who manages Nectar Network Projects for the Ayrshire Sustainability Group. “There are still a few gaps in the Kidney Vetch corridor, but the funding extension will enable us to build on the success to date by creating more habitats which bolster the corridor and ensure the ongoing survival of the Small Blue and other essential pollinating insects. “The project illustrates that golf courses can be excellent havens for wildlife and important links in green corridors that facilitate wildlife movement. As such, they all offer the potential for environmental enhancement and improved habitat connectivity. The Ayrshire Sustainability Group has created a legacy for subsequent generations of greenkeepers to build on and clearly demonstrates how working together can successfully re-create ecologically valuable environments.”
