SQUIRES GARDEN
Squire’s Garden Centres wins Silver Flora with A Hampton Garden RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2014 04 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 9
A
Hampton Garden by Squire’s Garden Centres has won Silver Flora in the Show Gardens Category at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2014.
The inspiration for the design is the urban garden in South West London, Surrey and Middlesex - a natural haven from our busy lives where relaxing in the garden after a hard day’s work is one of life’s simple pleasures. The family-run Squire’s business celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first garden centre in Twickenham in September – significantly, it was one of the first garden centres in the UK. True to the company’s close links with the local community and a long-held passion to help people make the most of their outdoor space, this garden brings to life how we can use our gardens for stylish outdoor living and entertaining. Sarah Squire of Squire’s Garden Centres explains the inspiration for the design: “We’re happy to have been awarded a silver flora for our urban garden. As a local horticultural business in the greater Hampton Court area our garden reflects the potential for local home gardens – you could say the unsung heroes of the gardening world. We’re passionate about making gardening and growing something that anyone can do, no matter what their experience is or how big or small their growing space. A special feature of our Hampton Court design is the living wall - which has received lots of attention today - and is a great example of how a different perspective can transform walls and fences into something really spectacular.”
Landscape & Urban Design Issue 9
05
Designed by Ian Hammond, Plant Area Manager at Squire’s Twickenham, the plot reflects the local area as Ian explains: ”Urban gardens are the ultimate great escape for commuters - a low cost and healthy way to switch off at the weekend or to relax on a summer’s evening. We’ve brought together key features that anyone can replicate – a mix of herbaceous flowers and plants to combine textures and scents for yearround colour and interest. Our centerpiece is the living wall complete with water feature bringing sound and movement to soothe away the noises that we live with in this part of greater London. Urban gardens are important wildlife reserves and we are showing just how easy it is to attract bees, birds and friendly insects – for example the marginal plants around the pond are a haven for dragonflies and bees just can’t resist a visit to lavender and achillea.” The planting focus on scent and texture as well as colour, with herbs and edible flowers was planned as a tapestry to give local people ideas for their own outside spaces, educating them on suitable plants and companion combinations, celebrating the wonderful varieties now available to gardeners. Garden centres have played a significant role in making more plant varieties available to the public and the quality of plants has improved dramatically compared to the early days of the Twickenham centre in the 1960s when, by far, the major themes of urban gardening were bedding plants, conifers and roses. Squire’s is inviting local gardeners to share their memories and photos of gardens in the Twickenham/Hampton area to create an on-line gallery of facebook and the website. Anyone interested should email marketing@ squiresgardencentres.co.uk or call in to Squire’s Garden Centre in Twickenham. A full celebration for the 50th anniversary takes place on 5th September with a vintage afternoon tea party. Although celebrating 50 years at Twickenham, Squire’s Garden centres actually stretches back almost 80 years when it was founded by D.J.Squire in 1946 initially as a landscape gardening business which then developed into one of the first garden centre businesses in the UK when Twickenham opened in 1964. Since then the company has become one of the best success stories in the industry, remaining in the Squire family under the leadership first of D.J’s son Colin - who is still actively involved in the business - and, today, Colin’s daughter Sarah who is Deputy Chairman. Squire’s has always had close connections with schools and the local community – with a particular passion for encouraging new generations of gardeners through a year-round programme of workshops for all ages and abilities - and has been at the forefront of developing best practice and innovation in the UK garden centre industry, now operating at 15 locations across Surrey, Middlesex, Sussex and Berkshire.

This summer, InstaPlant at Kernock Park Plants was commissioned to plant up an impressive 3D model of Clyde, the 4.5m high thistle man and official mascot for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Working alongside the David Ogilvie Engineering and Glasgow City Council, the team at InstaPlant planted up the living plant structure which is set to hold pride of place at the entrance of one of Glasgow’s most famous galleries. The story of the thistle man mascot is one of national pride. As part of a competition run by Glasgow 2014 for children to design the mascot, the winner, Beth Gilmour, had her drawing brought to life by digital agency NERV who created a full backstory and gave it a name – Clyde. Clyde then became the central character of a promotional animation developed in collaboration with artists such as comedian Billy Connolly and musician Paolo Nutini. The animation tells the story of a seafaring Scot called Captain Bristle, who was to sail around the 71 territories of the Commonwealth, planting a thistle in each nation so as to spread Scottish pride. Chris Harnett, InstaPlant Manager at Kernock Park Plants in Cornwall said “We are really pleased to plant up the ‘Clyde’ Mascot 3D displays. It was great to work with David Ogilvie Engineering and Glasgow City Council and we look forward to seeing the completed Mascot displays at the Commonwealth Games.” The living plant structure has been installed in Glasgow and will be on display outside the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum throughout the event which runs from 23rd July to 4th August 2014. BRICKWORKER Slab Cutting Guide
STIHL Small Brick Jig
DO YOU USE A PETROL CUT-OFF SAW TO CUT SLABS OR BLOCK-PAVING? Working everyday with the safer use of petrol saws, BRICKWOKER are regularly asked by Professional Landscapers about cutting paving slabs using a cut-off saw (or disc cutter). Here is why the BRICKWORKER Slab Cutting Guide is the answer to the their key questions. We need to cut a straight line in the right place? – Some landscapers tell you they can cut a straight line in the correct position, some tell you many factors mean it’s not always that simple. If you lock a Slab Cutting Guide on to the slab at the start and finish marks, not only will you cut straight and accurate, you will cut quicker. I really want to be cutting ‘wet’ to suppress dust? – Dust on any site (even a residential garden) is a major issue, the saw user can be risking a serious fine by cutting dry. Slabs are usually‘dry cut’because if you use water suppression you cannot follow your own line. The Slab Cutting Guide allows you to cut wet using a pertol saw (not an electric grinder) because you are not following a line, you follow an edge.
How can the saw be used more safely? – Safety is a major consideration with petrol saws and in many instances Professional Landscapers often feel that using a petrol saw ‘freehand’ can risk accidents. The Slab Cutting Guide gives you an edge to cut to and greatly reduces the chance of a‘kick-out’of loss of control. You can also do the new 'Cut-off Saw Training Certificate' offered by the CITB and become a qualified saw operator. I want my labourer/assistant to do all our cutting? – Many Professional Landscapers don’t get anyone else to cut because of these reasons. This means they have to keep stopping to make a cut themselves. The Slab Cutting Guide gives them the tool to allow others to cut the slabs.

Petrol Cut-off Saw Operators Training Certificate Industry is demanding greater training in the use of petrol saws and soon many companies and many sites will require cut-off saw operators to hold a certificate proving they have been properly trained to use a petrol saw. A new half day training course covering all aspects of how to use a cut off saw safely, including selection and fitting of PPE, operating the machine. Successfully completing the course will enable operators to use a cut off saw safely and will result in an Industry recognised 3 year Certificate from the Cskills Awards, the awarding organisation of CITB. The training is a blend of theoretical and practical hands-on study, with attendees knowledge being assessed at the beginning and the end of the course, and a practical assessment – The training is Pass/Fail. Courses will be run at local Health & Safety Training Companies, selected Construction Colleges and In-house by Construction Companies who have a training requirement for use of cut-off saws on-site.

Jacksons show Gardens update
See Us At The Landscape Show Stand C1
I thought it would be good to write a page for this issue of Landscape and Urban Design, as after publicising the Jacksons Show Gardens competition year after, I thought it was high time I gave you all an update on how it has gone this year. I also wanted to say thank you to everyone that registered their interest and entered the competition, it’s lovely to hear from all of you, and after five years there are many people who have become very familiar and in some cases, are now old friends! After many months of planning, scheming and quite a few sleepless nights, the show gardens have been completed and we’ve had the two separate garden launches, one at our HQ in Kent, for the two winning 2014 show garden designs located here. The Open Day was incredibly busy with visitors flocking to see the new gardens and the other five gardens that have been given a little TLC to rejuvenate them. Then another launch event a week later, for the rather unusual additional part of the competition, which is the show garden that opened at the Ashford Designer Outlet. This year’s winners are garden designers Sally Perigo, with Mediterranean Memories, Annie Berriman with the Tropical garden and Amy Roberts with Jacksons FC. Sally Perigo, who runs a garden design business in the south of France, is our first winner that is working abroad, although we do get quite a few entries from overseas. She said this about her winning garden, “The inspiration for my Mediterranean memories garden is a celebration of my time living and designing in the south of France and to show that a taste of the Mediterranean is possible in the UK, even in a north facing garden.” The garden looks glorious, it has had many positive comments from visitors who particularly seem to like the vibrant colour of the plants and the zingy coloured decorative panels, it is thriving at the moment in this hot June weather. The other winning garden based here at Jacksons, is Annie Berriman’s Tropical
garden. It has totally transformed the space into a lovely lush corner of the world. The garden’s aspect means there are some wonderful contrasts of light, which seem to make some of the plants colours and textures even more dramatic. A quick update on Annie, she has emailed briefly to say she got a Gold Medal for her ‘Heart of the Rose’ Border at BBC Gardeners’ World – she’s obviously on a winning streak! There’s also a tropical theme to the third winning garden design. (I have noticed there seems to be an upsurge in the use of exotic and tropical themes this past year). This was an unusual project; the brief was to create a show garden within the soft seating area at the Ashford Designer Outlet, celebrating a summer of sport, with the World Cup Finals in Brazil and other major sporting events like Wimbledon in mind. This busy area has an estimated 575k footfall throughout the summer months, so it has the potential to be a very useful profile raiser for Jacksons, the winning designer and other partner suppliers involved, like Easigrass Kent and Palmstead Nurseries. Amy Roberts, won this section of the competition with her ‘playful and inspired design, ‘JACKSONS F.C.’ What looks like a football pitch is marked out onto an artificial lawn; Large Banana trees, Trachycarpus and tropical planting create an exotic and strangely surreal area. Visitors are encouraged to make themselves at home, find seating on the pitch, or on the sidelines within the ‘dug outs’ (which are Jacksons Retreats). They can sit and enjoy food and drinks from the food court, whilst a large screen TV centered in a football goal shows sporty programmes, it’s great fun Well done Amy! KhodynKa ParK The new Khodynka park in Moscow will be built in the north township of the city, in an area of 42 acres, formerly occupied by the military airport.
Is a collaboration between Italian and Deutch architects (Andreas Kipar LAND Milano, Mario Cucinella Architects, Thomas Schonauer and LEFTLOFT) the new Khodynka park in Moscow that will be built in the north township of the city, in an area of 42 acres, formerly occupied by the military airport. At the time when architecture and society urgently need to reconsider more broadly their relationship with the natural world and move towards a more sustainable future, the project of the new ÂŤKhodynskoye poleÂť park offers a unique opportunity to redefine the meaning of an integrated park in a contemporary, sustainable society. All the Design is inspired by nature and land art, and the general approach is exploring mankind's desire to reconnect to the earth, through the built environment. All pavilions are designed to be discovered by visitors. The design overlaps each functional aspect with the plot and the mistery of the park. Mario Cucinella Architects has been involved in the design of particular elements of the park such as the metro entrance, the park and boulevard pavilions and the sports center.

Bound Surfacing Durable All-Weather Pointing for Sandstone Paving
Granite Sett Paving Repointing for the Peace Gardens
The extensive terraces and multi-level patios around this prestige barn conversion were all created using an attractive combination of 60mm thick, random length, natural sandstone paving slabs, together with reclaimed granite setts. All of the pointing and grouting was carried out after the main construction and paving bedding work had finished when it was also during the winter months, mostly having to be done in November and December.
The natural stone paving through the Peace Gardens in Sheffield has been refurbished for Sheffield City Council using GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar. The natural stone paving was becoming loose and subject to damage due to the typical cracking and loss of strength problems associated with traditional and proprietary cement based jointing mortars that had all been tried without success.
GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Pointing from NCC Streetscape was the ideal material for this pointing work, as not only was it fast and non-staining to wet slurry apply, but it could also be applied during cold and wet weather, meaning there would be no weather delays on the project. This advanced epoxy resin bound sand based material then hardens quickly to allow access and use of the paved areas shortly afterwards.
The Council’s Engineers and their Contractor found the ideal solution was the unique; epoxy resin bound sand based, vdw 850 Paving joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape. This also enabled all of the work to be successfully completed and without having to completely close any areas of the gardens.
Two contrasting and complementary shades of the vdw 850 pointing, in stone grey and natural sand, were used to highlight and enhance the beauty of the natural stone.
Contact: David Mackay at NCC Streetscape Limited: 01257 266696 Or email: sales@nccstreetscape.co.uk
Any visible damage was removed, the areas high pressure water jet cleaned, any loose stone setts rebounded in position and then the joints simply wet-slurry pointed with the vdw 850, which self-compacts into the joints. The surface is rinsed and then dry brushed-off and within a short period of time can be reopened for public access – also with no delays for cold or wet weather.

COLOURTEX BRIGHTENS UP EAST LONDON HOUSING ESTATE Colourtex has been used to regenerate the communal outdoor facilities of a South East London residential area as part of the Alsike Road Improvement Works. Yarnton Way in Thamesmead is a residential complex comprising Harlequin, Dexter and Argali House tower blocks, which are undergoing improvements to increase safety and recreational enjoyment for the residents. Gallions Housing Association, which is now part of the Peabody Group, used Bituchem’s Colourtex product in Buff to re-surface 5,000 sq.m of roads and footpaths around the tower blocks to provide clear demarcation that is aesthetically pleasing. The 6mm Colourtex application formed the first stage of the development project that aims to improve the landscape and urban environment by removing barriers such as walkways and garages. The Colourtex product provides clear, direct and safe routes to residents’ homes while equipping the area with a suitable base on which to improve lighting and signage. The resurfacing also enhanced the parking provision for the residents and by extending the same Colourtex material

helped to define three secure communal gardens and a dog walking area. Dan Hill, Head of Thamesmead Strategy at Peabody, commented on the Colourtex product, “After considering various options of slabs, tarmac and paving the project team agreed that Colourtex was the best option. Following a quick and simple application, Colourtex has proved a good choice to create a positive environment for our residents.” The aesthetic and durable qualities of Colourtex are achieved through the use of a clear binder combined with high performance coloured aggregates, allowing for vivid colours without compromising on performance. Available in a range of colours including red, blue and gold, Colourtex has a wide variety of applications in both the public and commercial sectors, being used for playgrounds, cycle paths and supermarket car parks. Landscape architects appointed for southampton’s Watermark WestQuay Grant Associates to design public realm for £70 million scheme ward winning landscape architecture firm Grant Associates has been appointed to design the public realm for Watermark WestQuay Southampton – a £70m leisure-led regeneration scheme masterplanned by ACME for developers Hammerson.
up of approximately 33 fountains. To reinforce the concept of ‘mudflats’ the water feature will ebb and flow like a tide, rising and falling to capture pools integrated into the paving scheme. At certain times of the day, the water feature will flood to create a mirror pool reflecting the historical Town Walls and light before receding like the tide.
Inspired by tidal mudflats, the strata in which the city of Southampton was first built apon, Grant Associates’ landscape design will comprise four key components: the plaza bringing a new open space for Southampton; the ancient historic town walls that form a distinctive backdrop to the spaces; the promenade that runs the length of the walls; and the steps and ramps that negotiate the 7 metre level change between the Bargate and the lower levels of Western Esplanade.
The promenade varies in width along its length to create a variety of spaces and niches and takes the forms and patterns of the original mudflats and tidal edges. The form and profile of the curving steps linking the lower promenade with the plaza also evoke images of lapping waves.

Planting and Swale System Planting is designed to respond to issues of shelter and microclimate enhancement. In line with development policy at Southampton City Council a swale system will harnesses water runoff through the landscape as well as establish different habitat types and improve local biodiversity. The swale will be characterised by native species that thrive in wet/dry conditions. Andrew Grant, Director, Grant Associates, said: “Watermark’s dramatic setting provides a wonderful framework and we are delighted to be given the opportunity to help shape a new phase of this historic piece of Southampton.” James Clarke, Associate, Grant Associates is the project landscape architect managing the project. He said: “Using simple construction techniques through bold geometric language of patterns and forms and giving particular thought to the way materials are used and implemented, we hope to create an exciting public space that conceptually references Southampton’s rich nautical past.” Guy Wells, Hammerson Development Manager said: “We have created a scheme which is unique to Southampton and celebrates the city’s historic walls and its maritime location. The public realm will be a fantastic addition for the city and the design has enduring appeal.”

n iconic symbol of the London 2012 Olympics has reopened to the public with help from Olympic fencing champions Zaun.
The flagship looping red steel tubular sculpture alongside the main Olympic Stadium, known as the ArcelorMittal Orbit, reopened to the public last month along with the south half of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The striking steel structure became a perfect symbol of the brilliance and originality of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games – and now visitors who book to make the ascent up the 114m tower will be rewarded with breath-taking views over the park, the city of London and 20 miles beyond. The ArcelorMittal Orbit was created by sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor and designer Cecil Balmond and uses 2000 tonnes of steel, more than half of it recycled.
London 2012 Games – including the perimeter of both the Olympic Stadium and the main park. Zaun has provided 2km of 2.4m high fencing around the tower itself, a further 400m of 1.2m fencing around The Podium houses ticket shop, event space, café and toilets, with access provided through canopied pedestrian turnstiles, two sliding vehicular gates and a 40mm thick steel panel specially requested by main contractor Skanska. Beyond is an open play area of tree trunks, Cornish granite and white sand; a snake-shaped line of fountains for children to play in; five waterways crossing the park; an orange climbing wall; and the South Lawn. South Park is the last piece in the jigsaw of the two-year transformation of the 560-acre Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to open to the public.
The idea was spawned from a chance conversation between London Mayor Boris Johnson and Lakshmi Mittal of steel giant ArcelorMittal: the Mayor mused about creating a landmark to commemorate the London Games and Mr Mittal immediately came on board and agreed to provide the steel.
Earlier this year Zaun clad the facade of the 1200-space Olympic media complex car park, as part of the conversion of the Press and Broadcast Centre to prepare for iCITY, a digital hub comprising new tenants Loughborough University, data centre provider Infinity, Hackney Community College and BT Sport, who now broadcast 38 Barclays Premier League live games a season.
The crowds are channelled by fencing, fittingly designed from steel mesh, manufactured and installed by the same British company who provided the majority of the temporary high-security fencing for the

With around 2,000 employees based at the firm’s prestigious offices, the overall programme of work saw five previously unused terraces being refurbished, all of which provide spectacular views over London. The design brief called for break-out areas to be created on each of the terraces, for staff hospitality, work and relaxation. With a high emphasis on the use of recycled materials and the use of fauna attracting plants, the five separate areas have enhanced the bio diversity of the area. The scope of Scotscape’s work included the installation of new paving, recycled composite decking, bed construction using recycled plastic boards, as well as the erection of new living walls and all necessary
planting. Commenting on the programme, Scotscape’s Managing Director Angus Cunningham said: “We were delighted to have worked on such an exciting project, our team producing high quality work, on time and within budget under some challenging working conditions. The team’s work has been extremely well received, drawing praise from everyone who has seen it”. On level two of the building, Scotscape installed a stainless steel wire living wall, with climbing plants established in pots at the base. On level eight, the company installed two large galvanised and powder-coated frames to support pots filled with soil and pre-grown ivy. This helped to ‘green-up’ and screen 50 square meters of vertical wall. On completion, the development of these five terraces along with other energy saving systems has helped PwC achieve the highest BREEAM rating yet recorded worldwide for an office building.

Whatever space you’ve got...... ‘It starts WIth a pot’
g
arden retailers across the country are encouraging people to get growing by becoming involved in the ‘It Starts with a Pot’ cross industry PR initiative. The ‘It Starts with a Pot’ campaign is designed to show people that gardening does not have to be complicated but that it can be straightforward and fun.
Commenting on the campaign HTA Chief Executive Carol Paris said, “Through this campaign we hope to encourage more people to enjoy their outdoor space. We are trying to demystify gardening and demonstrate how just by planting a few pots, or indeed any other containers, you can provide colour and impact to any outdoor space effectively.” The ‘It Starts with a Pot’ theme can be incorporated into existing instore activities and events such as planting sessions, quirky planting ideas, themed pots, or pots in the café. Visit www. the-hta.org.uk/iswap for more ideas. Share your involvement by emailing photos to iswap@the-hta.org.uk ‘It Starts with a Pot’ was one of a number of ideas to stem from a Garden Industry Marketing Board (GIMB)* workshop in October 2013. GIMB members came up with numerous ideas which have been developed into four concepts for an overarching industry wide campaign aimed at consumers in their 30s and 40s who are not currently heavily engaged in gardening and/or garden product purchasing. *The Garden Industry Marketing Board (GIMB) was formed in summer 2013. It includes the HTA, GCA, GIMA and the RHS along with key players from across the garden industry.
Brechin Castle and Turners Plant and Garden Nursery are Top of the Pots! As part of the ‘It Starts with a Pot’ campaign the Garden Centre Greatest Awards expert judges travelled thousands of miles to find out who is the greatest garden centre team when it comes to pot and plant retailing. There were many fantastic examples up and down the country of inspirational ideas and displays to capture the imagination of customers. After much deliberation Gold awards were presented to Brechin Castle and Turners Plant and Garden Nursery. “Our focus is to share knowledge and to take the fear out of growing for gardeners of all ages, abilities and experience.” explains Brechin Castle Managing Director Yvonne Ritchie. “Customers here have really engaged with this initiative, particularly enjoying our “Recipe for Perfect Pots” and our vivid displays. Our customers have been encouraged to create bold, colourful impact with pots to increase enjoyment and use of their outdoor areas which in turn promotes their health and wellbeing.”

Launched last year, the EverEdge Planter is the new, easy way to construct exquisite planters for use at home, to decorate public spaces or to adorn the outside of an office building. As with all EverEdge products, they are made entirely in the Britain and, from our base in Shropshire, shipped all over the world. The EverEdge Planter has now been used in projects right across the UK and Europe in everything from show gardens to roof gardens. These planters are made to order and can, therefore, come in virtually any size and can be made in a variety of materials including galvanised steel (painted or unpainted), Cor-Ten steel, stainless steel or a natural weathering steel. They can have a base, if required, or can come without; they can be tall; short; wide; narrow; thick or thin. In short, they are whatever you want them to be. The EverEdge Planter allows for un-rivalled flexibility in design and they have been used so far in the gardens of stately homes, outside office buildings, to decorate a stable yard, on rooftop gardens and on the patios of everyday townhouses. The latest planters to leave the factory were a circular planter for growing bamboo and a large rectangular planter used, in part, to house a tortoise! ARTIFICIAL GRASS
JuSTIN PAxmAN RePAIRS POOR LAwN INSTALLATION
Justin Paxman, MD of Paxman Landscapes (landscapers and installers of Grass Greener Artificial Grass), highlights the pitfalls of skimping on installation
P
ay cheap, pay twice, is a phrase that rings true in many walks of life, but is particularly close to home as Justin Paxman of Paxman
Landscapes installs new Grass Greener artificial turf to replace a failing inferior product installation in Huddersfield. Not only has the original lawn been down less than a year, it is barely suitable for the heavy rigours of a domestic lawn. The installation method and materials used have rendered the garden unsafe and unsuitable for purpose. What is more, this practice of “making do” is undermining the reputation and advantages of quality artificial grass such as Grass Greener and the name of professional landscapers and installers such as Paxman Landscapes. Justin launched the Grass Greener range of artificial lawn products at the Harrogate Autumn show in 2013. The products provide low-maintenance, petfriendly garden solutions for domestic lawns and commercial premises who
want that instant “wow” factor as well as lush lawn longevity. All of the Grass Greener products benefit from heavy-duty Latex backing, high quality stitching and density and a balanced mix of polyethylene, polypropylene or polyamide, depending on the chosen product. All of these elements are essential for a long lawn life. Repairing this existing artificial lawn highlights just how things can go wrong if shortcuts are taken or if materials are compromised to reduce costs. The lawn edges and joins are lifting as the wrong adhesive has been used and with a lifting lawn comes moisture seepage, a trip hazard and a shoddy end product. A Grass Greener installation starts from the initial site consultation, taking into full consideration any soil level changes, edging and slopes. In this case, the ground was not correctly prepared, leaving trip hazards onto existing hard surfaces. On some edges, the company responsible for fitting the existing turf had run out of membrane, leaving the new artificial grass with no layer of protection. Add to that poorly dug-out soil with some Summer bulbs still growing through and it was both a sorry site and a poor advert for artificial grass.
“The finish and making-good elements of a Grass Greener installation are vital” explains Justin. “We see this scenario all too often – cheap or makeshift materials, poor ground preparation, insufficient jointing compounds.” He adds “You pay cheap, you pay twice. Luckily, this homeowner is willing to give artificial lawn a second chance – but this time, they’ve come to the experts.” All Grass Greener installations use a specialised 2G double membrane process, which puts the product at the very top of the market for quality, resilience and longevity. These 2G membranes are installed in a specific way to ensure the product can be guaranteed for 10 years, once properly installed. The first layer protects the grass from mud, water and weeds and the second ensures that the artificial grass stays stable under use from pets and people alike. During installation, the addition of a failsafe, discreet plastic skirt runs around the edge of the grass and protects it from uplifting. Justin believes that the market should set some clear regulations as to the installation and product specification of artificial turf. He believes the introduction of a regulatory body would begin to stem the flow of inferior artificial turf materials and ensure professional standards of installation were set and adhered to. Justin is under no illusions - whilst it is perfectly possible that artificial lawns can be installed by any competent DIYer, a Grass Greener 10 year product guarantee and 6 year installation is not “pay less, pay twice” but “pay experts, pay once”.

This 500-seat large screen IMAX cinema was built for the British Film Institute (BFI) and opened in May 1999. It is by far the largest screen in Britain, and one of the biggest in the world. This area of the South Bank had long been notorious for crime and rough sleeping but through the support of the local Council, MPs and community groups, it has been transformed into a lively landscaped pedestrian oasis with a café and a huge new public artwork by the internationally renowned fine artist Howard Hodgkin. The sophistication of the IMAX projection and sound system is matched here by the construction technology. The site is surrounded by traffic and with the Waterloo and City tube line just 4 metres below the surface, the entire upper superstructure has been set on antivibration bearings to prevent the transfer of noise into the auditorium. The project has been an enormous success. Not only does the cinema consistently attract the highest attendances for the films shown there, but with the burgeoning of the vegetation has come a regeneration of the whole area. Play, with purpose… Playtop 3D Animals Lesley Pashley of Playtop Licensing Ltd introduces a new concept in creative play and landscaping, perfect for outdoor or indoor spaces.
W
ith the Playtop 3D Program range, we wanted to create something that continued creating, something that is playful as well as being played with. The range consists of 28 exciting shapes and animals that serve an array of both play and landscaping purposes perfectly.
“They’re made of durable rubber, which creates a safe play surface for children and can be used to create engaging, colourful playgrounds for kids, we well as doubling as an alluring landscaping aid to bring gardens and grounds to life. “The range includes a lion, a hippo, a little dragon, a sleeping farmer, a spider, an octopus and much more, which are ideal for a huge range of landscaping and play projects.”
On the playground
“When installed in a play facility, they create a fun focal point for playgrounds as well as giving a bright burst of colour. But more importantly, and much more interestingly, they’re designed specifically to foster creativity and play amongst children. “The animals actively promote cooperative play and their shapes and sizes stir the imagination, so rather than simply being running around an open space, children can imagine they’re flying on the back of the bee through a sprawling green meadow or jumping upon the belly of the sleeping farmer, to wake him after a hard day’s work! They create an instant and engaging impression that is sure to stimulate the imagination.”
In general landscaping projects
“What makes the Playtop 3D range suitable to almost any general landscaping project is their versatility. Unlike other installations, some shapes and animals can be placed without the need for surfacing beneath. They can also be fixed in place or left freestanding, allowing you to move and adapt your figures over time to suit a changing project or theme. But don’t worry, their weight will mean that they don’t move unless you want them to. “The reptile makes a fun, feisty figure to place beside water features and ponds, while the mushrooms make excellent stepping stones beside a path or walkway. The palisades can even be used as seating or steps over a fence or wall, creating a colourful gateway to a new part of your facility.
Safety as standard
“Each animal and every shape are made with bright, bold colours, the 28 different items all comply with the European Safety Standard EN1176 and all are covered with a high quality rubber surface. All products are made 100% in the European Union.” For more information on the exciting new Playtop 3D Animals range and to see how you could incorporate them into your project or build, visit www.3drubberanimals.com or contact Lesley on 07816 842494.

Sport & Play RAY’S PLAYHOUSE OPENS NEW INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND Fulham based Ray’s Playhouse has opened its new inclusive playground. The charity was formed in 2012 following a high-profile campaign led by parents to save the much-loved Sands End Playhouse, which had been operating for over thirty years. The Playhouse is situated in the heart of Sands End and provides a much-needed, stimulating environment for local parents and carers to take their children. Staff at the Playhouse raised £51,000 to create an exciting new playground that enables children of all abilities to play side-by-side. Play equipment company Sutcliffe Play worked with Ray’s Playhouse to create an inclusive natural playground that is designed to stimulate children’s senses using innovative sand play solutions. Andrew Love from Sutcliffe Play says: “The sand play unit allows children to play together in different ways. They can climb and sit, or use the pulley system and sieve to move sand up and down.” Margaret Ambrose, at Ray’s Playhouse says: “We decided to work with Sutcliffe Play as their equipment offered great play value plus innovative design, with a tailored approach to our project.” Ray’s Playhouse has so far raised the £51,000 to build the new playground through community fundraising including pub quizzes and a Christmas fair, donations and grants from Woodford Solicitors, Prestige Cars and Couriers, Bender Family Trust, John Lyon's Charity, Garfield Weston and The Clothworkers Foundation. The Playhouse is currently raising money for the second phase of the playground which will include innovative water play equipment.

Water Play (6-12 year olds) - Water splines, a hydro vault, and orchid-shaped splash buckets are used to form an ever changing series of synchronised water tunnels and water play effects. - Water splines: Designed as a series of vertical water splines, this water feature creates a forest of “reeds” that are free to spin 360 degrees at the upper portion, like a water hose left unrestrained. - Hydro vault: This serpentine-like passage of arcing water jets is programmed to be high enough for kids to pass under it, while lower heights in some locations encourage physical encounters with the water stream.
PLAY AREAS Toddler Play (1-5 year olds) - Balancing beam - Play spring seats - Sway bridge - Seesaw - Climbing structure with slide - Toddler swing - Flower table and seats - Toddler hammock - Stepping springs - Megaphone - Caterpillar topiary trellis Fish Fountain (2-5 year olds) - The Toddler Water Play offers interactive water play suitable for children between 2 to 5 years old. - Seventeen fish sculptures of varying sizes provide the illusion of fish swimming within the play surface. Toddlers can clamber on the sculpted backs and dodge a series of water jets from the sculptures.
- Orchid-shaped splash buckets: These water buckets tip downward when the volume within their chambers is filled, pouring out the content of water and creating a curtain of rainfall. The Treehouses (6-12 year olds) - Set within a thicket of rainforest trees, at a top height of 7.5 metres and 4 metres respectively, two treehouses offer a major play attraction with elevated platforms and shelters linked by timber and rope bridges. Each treehouse is a combination of web-like metallic frames that form the branches while a series of hanging rope baskets provides suspended pockets of spaces. Adventure Trail (6-12 year olds) The Adventure Trail is a green ridge that runs alongside one half of the perimeter of the Children’s Garden. Likened to a hiker’s trail, it mimics the natural landform with dips and humps. The following play structures strung along the Adventure Trail encourage a variety of motor skills such as jumping, crossing, reaching up and over, and manoeuvring under a low branch: A. Sway Alley bridge B. Arch net tunnel C. Monkey bars D. Grasshopper spring stepping pad E. Push-up bars F. Spider net G. Stepping stones H. Hill climbing ropes I. 4-way springer seats J. Hammocks K. - Amphitheatre with covered canopy provides a venue for educational events and doubles as an area for sheltered family seating - F&B outlet “Children's Garden Café” provides snacks and drinks - Child-friendly toilet and open shower facility for kids - Visitor service counter
PLANTS (IMPLEMENTED BY GARDENS BY THE BAY HORTICULTURE TEAM) - An avenue of “Old Man Palm”, or Coccothrinax crinita, is planted at the main entrance to kindle children’s imagination. This Cuba native is well known for its stiff, beige-coloured fibre hairs densely borne along the entire length of the single, thick trunk, making it look like an old man with a thick beard. - Pachycaul trees from the Monsoon tropics add unique character to the Children’s Garden with their bizarre form. - Topiary arches formed using Ficus microcarpa are lined along the ridges to provide instant shade for the children. - Different species of Ficus, such as Ficus lutea, Ficus americana, Ficus lyrata, and Ficus benghalensis, are planted in close proximity around the treehouses to form a thick curtain of trailing aerial roots for children to duck under. - Feature trees, such as Adansonia digitata, Adansonia madagascariensis, Pseudobombax ellipticum, Moringa drouhardii, Moringa stenopetala, Brachychiton rupestris, and Brachychiton australis, are planted on the steep ridge. - Scented flowering plants like Murraya paniculata, Magnolia champaca, Aglaia odorata, Micromelum minutum, and Randia macrantha, are planted in some sections of the Children’s Garden to create a natural habitat for butterflies.

ccoya, the world-leading modified wood has been selected to provide decking for one of just twenty six gardens on display at Europe’s most renowned garden events the Chaumont-sur-Loire International Garden Show.
The festival which launched on Friday 25 April and runs until the 2 November receives hundreds of entries each year from the world’s leading designers keen to showcase their work. Every garden featured is tasked to reflect the festival’s theme, which this year is ‘Seven Deadly Sins’. Architectural designer Hay Joung, of London firm Randle Siddeley Associates has been selected to showcase her garden concept, which features Accoya Deck and is entitled ‘The Balance’. The design of the garden reflects the paths in life which lead to temptation or avoidance of the deadly sins. The garden includes stone monoliths which represent the seven deadly sins and seven heavenly virtues connected by wooden decked paths, crafted from Accoya wood. There are also ‘see-saw’ structures of Accoya which connect different sides of the garden and which symbolise the need for balance in life. A rock sculpture at the end of the garden to completes the space. The structure is inspired by rock-balancing artists who themselves require patience, practice and sensitivity to achieve their goals, reflecting the complexity of life. Hay Joung, said, “I am very proud to be creating my garden ‘The Balance’ at this year’s Chaumont-sur-Loire Garden Show. Every element from design to delivery has been carefully thought through

including the decision to commission Accoya Deck. “I wanted to ensure the garden was as sustainable as it could be and environmentally friendly as possible. To achieve this, I needed a product which would be durable for the length of the festival and Accoya Deck was the ideal option. “As well as being sustainably sourced the modification process means it is superior to hardwood equivalents – which is ideal for this project as we’ll have thousands of visitors walking across the deck this summer during warm sunny days.” Marc Michels, at marketing director at Solvay Acetow said, “We pride ourselves on providing our customers with a superior wood product which will meet a variety of needs. We’re delighted to see the quality and finish of Accoya recognised amongst artists and designers and placed centre stage at the Chaumont-sur-Loire Garden Show.” Accoya which is manufactured by Accsys Technologies and retailed by Solvay, is one of the most advanced modified wood products on the market delivering outstanding levels of performance, stability and class one durability. Exceeding the high-quality and aesthetic attributes of tropical hardwoods, it also boasts excellent environmental credentials by using wood sourced from FSC certified and sustainable forests as well as being Cradle to Cradle Gold certified.
