With our increasing population leading to the need for more homes and land becoming an ever deceasing commodity because of this –adapting our approaches to urban design and adequate drainage infrastructure is paramount. None of us will forget in a hurry the devastating scenes of January 2014, in which the highest rainfall since records began destroyed homes, schools, the only railway link between Cornwall and the rest of the UK- and was responsible for at least 17 deaths.

There are many issues to address in Landscape and Urban Design – and whilst cost is often at the fore of any design project, we must not forget that all of our wetlands, parks, playgrounds, streets and gardens are part of what makes Britain beautiful - This demonstrated with exception by ‘Britain in Bloom’ who celebrated an impressive 50 year anniversary in October (p52) and in the glorious living, green walls from Biotecture (p40). It goes to show that with thought and innovation, we can provide cost effective, wildlife savvy yet beautiful solutions to our changing climate and population needs. Bowles & Wyer Nominated for a Society of Garden Designers Award Award winning designer John Wyer of Bowles & Wyer is hoping to add to his existing cabinet of silverware as he has been shortlisted for a prestigious SGD award for a scheme entered in the new Pocket Garden category (for any domestic UK project less than 100m² including courtyards, roof terraces, a front garden) and the Hardscape category. All will be revealed at the award ceremony on 30 January 2015 in London.

Scores of inspiring garden schemes were entered into the SGD Awards and have now been whittled down by the judging panel into a shortlist of 30 in the main award categories. Projects range from inspiring pocket-sized plots such as the one that Bowles and Wyer has entered, to a 21st century garden restoration inspired by and honouring Gertrude Jekyll’s historic schemes. The Bowles & Wyer scheme is a complete design and build garden landscape project in Eaton Square, one of London’s most desirable addresses. The brief was to transform this tiny space that nestled at first floor level between a large house and a mews property, into a beautiful, tranquil and inspiring roof top garden for extensive family and entertainment use, including a custom-designed outdoor kitchen. In addition the client wanted multiple points of access and views, a tough call with overlooking issues but not insurmountable! There were stringent technical requirements in terms of weight, performance, drainage, stability, etc. Whole project was designed by Bowles& Wyer so that it could be built off-site then craned into position in stages.d The Judges constitute a panel of independent and respected experts, including designers, academics, journalists and horticultural professionals, who select the shortlisted and winning designs. The SGD Award judges for 2014 include garden design luminaries such as Julie Toll, Sarah Eberle and Arabella St John Parker, Homes and Gardens Editor on Homes and Gardens Magazine. John Wyer said, “It is great to have a garden shortlisted for an SGD award. These awards are recognised as the Oscars of the garden design industry and competition for them is extremely tough. I am really looking forward to the final ceremony in January”

TigerTurf UK Ltd has completed the successful production of a brand new, bespoke sports pitch at Uckfield Community Technology College. Local Football Clubs, the Uckfield Grasshoppers ’81 Junior Football Club and Uckfield Town FC, required a reliable surface to fulfil weekly training schedules and competitive league fixtures. In addition, the centre’s strong community focus also dictated the need for the pitch to be multifunctional for a variety of different sports, including rugby. This was achieved with the installation of Total Turf 60 XQ onto a 20mm in-situ rubber shock-pad, installed by McArdle Sport-Tec Ltd. Gordon Buckland, from Uckfield Grasshoppers ’81 Junior Football Club commented: “This will enable wider community involvement in football and also be a fantastic facility to nurture future talent.”

Reversing the decline in Britain’s wildflower meadows - naturally A 100% natural solution to halting the catastrophic decline in Britain’s wildflower meadows was showcased at London’s Landscape Show. Q Lawns from Norfolk have created two wildflower meadow turfs that are studded with up to 42 native species. Both are suitable for most landscape situations. For the show, Q Lawns worked with butterfly breeder Angelina Hayden to create a special butterfly dome where visitors could enjoy watching native British butterflies interacting with Meadowmat. The butterflies were specially selected to survive in the wild as they were released after the exhibition.

InstaPlant and David Ogilvie Engineering create 2014 Commonwealth Games Mascot made from living plants This summer, InstaPlant at Kernock Park Plants was commissioned to plant up an impressive 3D model of Clyde, the 4.5m high thistle man and official mascot for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Working alongside the David Ogilvie Engineering and Glasgow City Council, the team at InstaPlant planted up the living plant structure which is set to hold pride of place at the entrance of one of Glasgow’s most famous galleries. Both of the mascots will be displayed throughout the event which runs from 23rd July to 4th August 2015.

ArchTriumph / EcoSpace The team at Spirafix Limited was delighted to be part of this project, undertaken at the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. The organisers of the award were ArchTriumph and the designers and installers were EcoSpace速 Ltd. We were contracted to carry out load tests on site prior to the erection of the pavilion to determine what anchors would be needed. In addition to this we supplied and installed the anchors. The pavilion was structured in such a way that the end enclosures provided most of the lateral support for the pavilion. These were held in place using four of our long 50mm anchors, whilst the individual sections were pinned using shorter anchors. The entire structure was completed in one day. The pavilion was open to the public during the London Festival of Architecture during June 2014.

‘Play architect’: award-winning Play design and Play-architectural Practice Extraordinary play spaces and equipment With 14 years’ experience of designing play spaces around the world, including UK theme parks and schools, the Venetian Hotel in Macau and indoor and outdoor spaces in the far-east, Play Architect founder Amy Charman has been one of the first to respond to the changing requirements of her customers. “Our customers want less predictable outdoor play equipment…” she explained: “Play equipment and spaces where you might not expect to find it. Play equipment that complements natural environments; that is beautifully designed to enhance indoor and outdoor spaces and that uses materials and designs that are tailored to their surroundings”, she added. They want –it would appear -stunning original, inspiring and intelligent design to maximise playvalue and also provoke inquisitive young minds. For example, Play architect recently designed a bespoke ‘space-themed’
outdoor classroom and play area for Bosvigo School, in Truro, Cornwall. The ‘play-planetarium’ is the first of its kind and its striking visual impact is rivalled only by the huge play-value that it offers to children between 4 and 11 years of age. Uniquely, significant emphasis is placed on tailoring designs to the needs of the customer. Amy consulted with Bosvigo school over several months, developing their brief for a “shelter and climbing frame with educational value.” Space was limited so the design had to occupy a small footprint whilst maximising the play and educational outcomes. Bosvigo were certainly pleased with the result: “At times it has been difficult to see the dome, as it has been covered in children at every opportunity. Reassuringly the planetarium was inspected last week by ROSPA (play equipment safety inspection) and the inspector, who inspects across half of England and Wales, said that in terms of play value
and build quality the planetarium is the best piece of equipment he has seen “in a very long time.” – Chris Wallis, Headteacher “The design offers very high play value for all age groups and teaches children the benefits of risk in play and helps build strength, co-ordination and interaction with other children.” - Wayne Hock – Play Safety Inspector – RPII RoSPA. Amy said “As we finished installing the Play Planetarium, one of the most rewarding sights was to see the teachers climbing all over it with excitement. It’s great to see both adults and children engaging with our designs.” Play Architect engages with developers, designers, architects and customers, providing planning, design, product development and manufacture. Plastics and primary colours are generally kept to a minimum and manufacture takes place in the UK, points that have particularly appealed to our Far East customers who appreciate English design and craftsmanship. Water Play The use of water in play has often been neglected. However, provided that basic hygiene precautions are taken, it has high play value. Whether it is the recently developed water jet systems based on wet pour surfacing, or simpler systems where children can just splash with their hands, there is a lot of enjoyment to be had. Whilst the water jet systems can be expensive (and to a certain extent need good weather to be useable) they do provide an exciting and safer alternative to the old fashioned paddling pools. Simpler systems that could just involve a few millimetres of running water are cheaper. They also have the advantage that they help to develop hand and finger dexterity among younger children. If you are planning to install water play in any form you are advised to consult RoSPA about the designs before proceeding.
Timber Play Imaginative use of timber in play areas is increasing. In the past it has just been used as an alternative to metal and has been used in a similar manner. However, recent developments are using timber in a more “natural� way to give a less formal look. Play areas can be made to look more interesting and simple measures can add extra play value. Even the replacement of a standard seat with a carved log with animal footprints carved into the surface turns a utilitarian item into something exciting which also has good tactile experience; especially for those with visual impairment. Living structures such as willow features can give children some of the experiences the older ones among us will remember; from the less constricted times when we were children.

Pumptracks Pumptracks are increasingly popular facilities and a fantastic form of active play. Already well established across Europe, they have been growing in numbers across the UK, but whilst most will have heard the term 'pumptrack', many do not know exactly what they are, who they are used by and what they can do for a community. Pumptracks were born from the biking worlds of BMX and mountain biking, as riders looked for a style of track design that focussed on fun, inclusivity and progression, rather than competition; the concept for Pumptracks was born. The concept revolves around a constantly undulating layout, where riders generate momentum and speed not through pedalling, but rather an up and down pumping motion over the undulations, which propels them forwards, as if by magic. Corners are steeply banked to support the rider and maintain momentum and the layouts are continuous loops allowing riders to carry out multiple laps as they intuitively learn how to ride the tracks and improve their bike skills while having a great time. Without the large and intimidating jumps often found on BMX tracks, or penalties for failure, Pumptracks are far more accessible and safer for novice riders. In turn, this means that Pumptracks have the ability to increase participation in outdoor sports. With more options for creative design, they can be incorporated into small or unusually shaped parcels of land that would otherwise be useless for outdoor recreation facilities. Originally built with the same construction techniques as BMX tracks, from subsoil and stone, the next evolution of the Pumptrack has arrived with the birth of Modular Pumptracks. Bringing all the efficiencies associated with prefabricated design, safety certificates and supplied with warranties, they open pumptracks up to a world of new possibilities.

TC Sports Surfaces and sports fencing specialist Zaun have transformed an Essex car park into a brand new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA).
The MUGA behind the Children’s Support Services Heybridge Centre will give the children there an attractive pitch on which to play football, tennis and basketball. The Heybridge Centre offers a wide range of services for secondary school children who have learning and behavioural difficulties. Thanks to £20,000 funding from Essex County Council to make the improvements, this transformation will inspire the youngsters to play outdoor sports in a safe enclosed all weather surface area. Premises manager Phil Davis said: “The MUGA has made a real difference to the school – we now have more curriculum based PE activities for the children to participate in and they can use the area in all weathers. “Previously all we had was a grassy area that didn’t give the children any basketball or tennis opportunities, and obviously got very muddy in wet weather. We are all very pleased with the MUGA.” The Porous Macadam MUGA is ideal for private, club and school use as it needs very little maintenance throughout the year and is less slippery after rain. Zaun supplied the double wire panel fencing, with two goal recesses built in for five-a-side football and integrated basketball hoops and backboards. The highly durable fencing is ‘graffiti-proof’ and offers high rebound similar to a hard surface that causes balls to bounce back at almost the same angle they strike the fence. Davis concluded: “From planning to production, the construction of the MUGA was a breeze. It is an absolutely fantastic addition to the Heybridge Centre and has made a real difference to the day to day lives of the students, enabling them to take part in a much wider range of practical activities within a first class environment." Zaun and ETC Sports are working hard on forging a strong relationship – to the benefit of Essex community football club, Mundon Vics FC. The County Motor Works Vauxhall Mid-Essex Football League third division side are sporting a new kit sponsored by Zaun. Shared social space is crucial to community wellbeing. Parks have always been an essential part of community life, however with increasingly isolated, busy lives, people are underusing their parks and community centres. Councils are now fighting back with park regeneration plans that have far reaching benefits. So why are parks so essential? How can a park regenerate a whole area? Parks clearly benefit our health and wellbeing. Park regeneration in green spaces provides people of all ages with opportunities to take part in physical activity in attractive environments; a truly inclusive and holistic experience. This in turn increases the health, wellbeing and social integration of a community, regenerating the whole area. Why offer a fitness park? Health Today more and more people are living an unhealthy lifestyle where computers, TV and fast food have a large influence. Outdoor fitness introduces healthy choices for lifelong fitness within the community and reduces obesity levels. Fitness parks are associated with improved physical and mental health, reducing the strain in the already overstretched health service and having
a positive impact on the economy with reduced sick days. Accessibility Fitness parks are accessible to all as they offer convenience in our increasingly busy modern lives. Some people even choose to get married in one. What are we talking about? A treehouse. Not one like your dad or uncle built you when you were young, but rather a mesmerising and eye catching work of art. An enchanting retreat high up in a leafy bough- a place to relax and enjoy a drink with friends on along summer evening watching the setting sun ands listening to the hoots of an awakening owl. We can also provide your children with a fantasy hideaway where they can stimulate their endless imaginations in natural surroundings by making a part of your garden their own. Highlife treehouses specialises in hand made bespoke treehouses, of which two are never the same. Hobbit Hole: Emma Braund the deputy head teacher at a primary school in Watford was looking to create a fantastic outdoor reading area in an internal courtyard in her school. The courtyard was a damp and forgotten place. The floor was split-level which provided its own difficulties and some cheap decking had be laid over a small pond (that had a tendency to flood). She contacted a few companies, but in the end it seemed that best option was to install a colourful ‘Hobbit Hole’. High life Treehouse installed one and transformed the area. The bright colours were chosen by the children – and the artificial grass completed the look. As it was deemed necessary to have a ‘larger than normal Hobbit Hole’, so the project cost around £12,000. The kids absolutely love it!
Treehouse Classroom. Frensham Heights is an impressive private school in leafy Surrey. The stunning old building is often used for weddings as it is so special. It was therefore a tricky task to design and build a treehouse that would be in keeping with the grounds. Fortunately the school had a decent budget of £100,000 and a large amount of woodland - a good combination. The design was two circular buildings that were interlocked (giving a figure of eight shape) with a veranda that runs the whole way around the structure. As the ground was basically a swamp the foundations were a huge task in themselves. 40 concrete piles were needed – each one over 6m deep. High Life treehouse were employed to build the impressive structure under the keen eye of not one, not two, but three Health and Safety Officers. Nevertheless, the project was a huge success, it gave the children a unique place to learn, and it is a wonderful feature for the school. Just imagine a classroom that children can’t wait to get into!

JB CitiDeck® improves historical lake access at Wicksteed Park The £2million renovation of Wicksteed Park has brought the park back to the original vision of its founder, Charles Wicksteed. Improving access around the park As part of the renovation, over 4,500 linear metres of JB CitiDeck® was specified by LDA Design. This decking was used to form the decking for the bridges, floating pontoon, a pier and a boardwalk. These areas had been designed as part of the park’s renovation to encourage visitors to the lesser used areas of the park. Previously visitors had chosen to stay in the main park. The creation of the boardwalk and pontoon, by Walcon Marine, enables access to the far area of the lake. The footbridge, created by CTS Bridges, provides a link to the arboretum. JB CitiDeck® is a smooth deck board with a less abrasive grit. This gives a more comfortable surface for urban footwear, wheelchair users and pushchairs, whilst still exceeding the slip resistance requirements of the HSE guidelines. The specification of JB CitiDeck® at Wicksteed Park provides improved access, especially for the less able, to the park and its wildlife. A spokesman for Wicksteed Park comments “The pontoon is already being extensively used and has become a popular feature of the park.”

CTS Bridges Ltd provided a design, build and installation service to develop a design initiated by The Morton Partnership to produce this elegant 30m x 2m tubular steel arched footbridge with tensioned structural cables at Oxford University. The bridge was commissioned by Christ Church College, Oxford following donations by old members of Christ Church to replace a static punt crossing. The new bridge provides a link between the sports ground and the main college building but also provides access for members of the public.

Reopened Speakers’ Corner features bespoke metal railings The official reopening of Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park featured bespoke metal railings manufactured and supplied by metal railings and gates manufacturer, Alpha Rail.
The area is also an important entrance to Hyde Park and has been refurbished to ensure it continues to be a vibrant and welcoming spot for both speakers and visitors. Large trees have been introduced to help reduce noise from nearby traffic, as well as a ripple paving detail, bespoke railings supplied by metal railings and gates manufacturer Alpha Rail, increased planting and extended grass areas. Commenting, Alpha Rail Sales Director Phil Ball said, “We are very proud to have supplied bespoke metalwork for the Hyde Park project and four other Royal Parks, including Richmond and Regents Park.” He added, “In total, Alpha Rail has supplied over 780 metres of Westminster vertical bar metal railings, fitted with a bespoke finial in the shape of a megaphone and twelve gates for the Royal Parks Projects. Overall, the contract has been worth a significant sum.”

Well, the work of over a thousand artists have come together on one massive website www.artparks.co.uk giving access to sculptures and statues- ranging from 2 inch to 20 foot tall, in all shapes and sizes with easy reference categories. Specifiers say that they find it easy to navigate and to good way to be introduced to the artists and their work. It is not confined to professionals, as a high proportion are collectors and art lovers from all over the world, all searching for that elusive ideal. What makes it so interesting is the sheer variety of art that is asked for. Possibly one of the more unusual was a commission for 30 bronze statuettes, of a caricature of a businessman playing a game of chess against a lion representing bureaucracy. This was commissioned as a corporate gift to clients. The sculptor was in Bulgaria and the client in South America; the union only made possible by our website. Another commission was a delightful contemporary 2meter Abstract Marble Sculpture for Chelsea made by an American artist in Italy. More recently and even more unusual was a bronze tombstone for a client in Texas. A beautiful bronze life size ‘Seated Girl’ to sit on a bench, made in Thailand and sent to Taiwan and a stunning Bronze Peregrine Falcon to scare away the pigeons from a penthouse in central London.

Latest US Kebony project at Hunters Point New York City
Kebony today announces details of its most recent project in the US, Hunters Point South Waterfront Park, New York City, as it extends its US market penetration through its new distribution partner, Pine River Group. Perched on the bank of the East River in New York, the use of Kebony’s sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood as the decking throughout the park is notable development for the Norwegian company as it expands into the US. Hunters Point South Waterfront Park opened after a turbulent and lengthy construction process which was halted by the extensive damage inflicted by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Durability and longevity therefore featured high on the agenda of those designing and building this project for preventative reasons and in defiance of extreme weather events, like the recent polar vortex.
Kebony’s Southern Yellow-Pine for the decking was a considered choice by the architects as it has highly durable properties that will not deteriorate in even adverse weather conditions. With its elongated life span, strength, increased protection against shrinkage and outstanding environmental credentials, Kebony was the only choice. The silver-gray patina which Kebony develops when exposed to weather is an attractive complement to the riverside setting of the park. The use of Kebony at Hunter’s Point demonstrates the versatility, durability and aesthetic value of the product. Woodscape street furniture for shoppers at Abbeywood Shopping Park, Bristol A selection of outstanding Naturally Very Durable Hardwood specialised Woodscape street furniture brought an unused public space to life, at Abbeywood Shopping Park, Bristol. Home to a large selection of national brands, this recently refurbished retail park required a variety of outdoor furniture to utilise the outside space in front of the shop facades. Woodscape worked with Anthony Gerrad at RGCM Ltd and Macgregor Smith Landscape Architects to realise their street furniture requirements. Designed and manufactured in our UK workshops, a Seat Type 2 with special leg arrangement ran alongside a curved planter. A Seat Type 4 with an organic curve stretching a 5.61m radius allows groups of shoppers to sit together and socialise under an outdoor canopy. Bespoke modular rectangular seating blocks open at either side measuring 675mm wide made from beautiful timbers added a fun and flexible feature. The recent popular uptake of living walls in the UK is part of a more general reawakening to the benefits of green infrastructure. This is particularly evident in London where iconic vertical gardens such as the Athenaeum Hotel on Green Park, the Rubens Hotel in Victoria and the south faรงade of Edgware Road Bakerloo Tube Station are admired by many on a daily basis. There are a several different living wall systems now as well as a good deal of knowledge, support and expertise, and each successive green wall installation helps to steadily increase confidence in this exciting and innovative sector. It is a hi-tech age and we employ hi-tech
methods to ensure these living walls continue to thrive. In the Biotecture office in Sussex, for example, we have a dedicated member of staff who remotely monitors and controls living wall irrigation systems via GSM networks across the country and around the globe. We now know with confidence that we can keep our living walls flourishing in a wide variety of conditions and so the focus of the industry is turning towards defining, measuring & valuing the distinct benefits that vertical greening can bring. This will require government, academia, and those of us in the industry to work together. The culmination will be an effective communication strategy telling
the world that green infrastructure in general and living walls in particular are essential elements of a desirable and sustainable urban landscape. In 2014, the percentage of world population living in urban areas is at 54% up from 34% in 1960. This figure is expected to reach 67% by 2050. Clearly the need for planned sustainability for our cities is vital right now and this is preoccupying many of the place-makers of today. I was recently invited by Land Securities to work with a number of others exploring the question, “what is a sustainable city?” It’s a complicated question but the answer has, I think, two basic strands; firstly a sustainable
city should do no harm and secondly; it should offer people opportunities to thrive. So if a sustainable city must first do no harm, we need to look at both source and mitigation strategies to radically reduce the estimated 35,000 to 50,000 deaths in the UK per year that are attributable to outdoor air pollution. Air pollution is considered to be a major contributory factor for cardiovascular disease, as well as exacerbating asthma. A recent study has even researched the potential link between traffic-related air pollution and slowed cognitive development in children. The pollutants that do most harm are nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone, sulphur dioxide and particulate matter of
a size less than 1/25th the diameter of a human hair. Sadly we’re not doing very well here in the UK where levels of NO2 in London are the highest of any capital city in Europe. But NO2 is not just a London problem: The UK has the highest proportion of zones (16 of 43) exceeding the NO2 annual limit value of any country in Europe. As an example of the scale of this public health crisis, annual mean levels of NO2 in areas of the UK are averaging well over three times the World Health Organisation guidelines. Earlier this year the European Commission sent the UK a ‘Letter of formal notice’ of this breach. Fines in excess of £300M are

anticipated if the UK does not bring these levels under control by 2020. This is serious stuff. Green infrastructure can help to reduce these levels. Living walls work well because they can be sited right next to where we breathe our air – by pavements, in our offices and around school playgrounds. Studies are starting to show significant potential reductions in air pollution by targeting green walls to specific locations (particularly in urban street canyons). It is well known that plants both catch & hold pollutants on the leaf surface. Plants also absorb CO2 and other gases (including NO2). Following research we are also now able to work with specific plants on our living walls that we know perform well in reducing pollutants and particulate matter. To reduce NO2 a study in 2012 by Lancaster University calls for planted billboards to be installed throughout our cities. Many of the cities in the UK are blessed with some fantastic accessible parkland and open green spaces. These are not only excellent for biodiversity but also offer an opportunity for people to escape the hub-bub of daily life, breathe deeply, relax and reconnect with the natural world. Rather than being considered as

substitutes to these accessible green spaces, green roofs and living walls should be thought of as vital additions to augment and help to connect these spaces. Targeted green infrastructure can reach the parts other parks cannot reach. Aside from cleaning the air, green infrastructure can have a dramatic effect on reducing the urban heat island effect. And on buildings themselves living walls and green roofs can significantly reduce the thermal load by ameliorating temperatures. This means lower heating costs in winter and reduced air conditioning costs in summer. Research to value this benefit is currently underway. Planted roofs and walls also help to connect bio diverse green networks particularly in the centre of cities where space is at a premium both literally and financially. High biodiversity is an essential ingredient of a sustainable city. As well as helping to tick a number of sustainability boxes, living walls also look beautiful. They give people a (measurable!) psychological uplift. Underpinning all of this is the basic fact that people like plants. A Harvard Professor, Edward Wilson, coined the word Biophilia to describe our
natural affinity with the plant kingdom. Unfortunately this affinity is often misunderstood, ignored or downplayed by architects, quantity surveyors and clients alike. We must get past this point. A study published in in September 2014 in the American Psychological Association’s acclaimed Journal of Experimental Psychology strongly suggests that plants in office spaces increase employee productivity by 15% and improves workplace satisfaction by up to 40%. This directly contradicts the current trend for “lean” offices championed by many large corporations and government which have minimal decoration with little to no artwork or plants. Living walls offer the opportunity to include lots and lots of plants whilst taking up a minimal precious floor area. It is time to consider the full integration of green infrastructure as part of the architectural and sustainability strategies for buildings and cities alike. There is the opportunity to satisfy both form and function. This is our challenge for the next few years. Have a look up from your desk - how green is your view? ALL CHANGE FOR SUDS After long delays, the government has announced an alternative approach to implementing SuDS using the planning system anticipated in Interpave’s recent discussion document – and taking effect in Spring 2015. Then, SuDS - and techniques such as concrete block permeable paving - will become part of the planning process, allowing greater involvement by landscape designers, architects and planners – as the trade body Interpave explains. It is well recognised that sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and techniques such as concrete block permeable paving are needed to help fight flooding and pollution - particularly with overloaded sewers, urbanisation and climate change. The 2010 Flood and Water Management Act was set to make SuDS mandatory. Yet these measures still cannot be directly applied until implementation of Schedule 3 of the Act and the long-awaited National Standards for SuDS and related Guidance – both still in draft. But a ministerial statement issued on 12th September launched a proposal that by-passes the Act. Instead, amended planning guidance – based on the latest draft national SuDS standards - will bolster the existing National Planning Policy Framework encouragement for SuDS. Then, planning conditions, ‘Section 106 Agreements’ and other measures are proposed to ensure that SuDS will be maintained for the lifetime of the development without increased costs. As the government proposal points out: “All the available evidence is that sustainable drainage systems are generally cheaper to build; and maintaining them will be cheaper.” Gradual Supply of Clean Water This measure is already supported by the Code of practice BS 8582:2013. But it goes much further, linking water management and development planning from the start. It seeks to maximize opportunities for using space in a multifunctional way and for enabling SuDS features to form part of the character of the development: both key features of concrete block permeable paving, which can supply a gradual supply of clean water for recycling, irrigation, biodiversity and real amenity use within the landscape. With concrete block permeable paving, SuDS offer imaginative designers opportunities, rather than just technical problems to be solved. Taking an holistic approach, designers can embrace SuDS as one of the key design considerations from the very start of their projects, exploring innovative solutions that form an integral part of an overall landscape scheme. Drainage engineering then becomes simply a part of the process - not the primary driver and an end in itself. This is explored in Interpave’s recent discussion document – ‘SuDS + Permeable Paving Today, Edition 2’ - which is freely available via: www.paving.org.uk/commercial.

SuDS Infrastructure for Cambridge Homes Expansion BUILDING a sustainable drainage infrastructure for a development providing 1000s of new homes to serve the expanding Cambridge conurbation has delivered important lessons for housebuilders as they prepare for new regulations for SuDS in England and Wales – whilst demonstrating that the solution for every site must be individual. Noel Kingsbury draws industry guests to BALI’s Yorkshire event Garden designer, prolific author and exponent of naturalistic planting, Noel Kingsbury, was the guest speaker at the BALI Yorkshire and North East networking event in Harrogate recently. Held annually, this is the largest of BALI’s regional events and regularly attracts upwards of 100 BALI members and industry guests, including members of the Society of Garden Designers and the Landscape Institute. Also attending this year was garden designer and presenter on ITV’s ‘Love your Garden’ programme, Katie Rushworth. In addition to enjoying dinner and Noel’s presentation on plant communities, guests had the opportunity to talk directly to BALI Affiliate members exhibiting their products and services during the evening. Noel Kingsbury has written books on landscape and planting design with Piet Oudolf and worked with Professor Nigel Dunnett of the University of Sheffield to produce the first book in English on Green Roofs. In his presentation Noel gave guests an insight to the benefits of plant communities, where chosen species adapt to their environment by using complementary resources more successfully and thriving to create lush, varied landscapes. Using images of schemes in the UK and Europe, Noel illustrated how public space planting can benefit from this approach, creating visually attractive schemes whilst helping to reduce maintenance costs. The ArborRaft System Many urban tree planting projects fail to deliver the expectations the project set out to deliver. Unfortunately it is common to see trees growing, or not, at different rates, wilted and stressed looking. Some issues are down to Mother Nature but many are due to incorrect tree pit design. Nearly all of the trees that are specified for UK projects are shallow lateral rooting. 90% of the root structure will develop within the top 500mm, the remaining 10% grow deeper to provide anchoring and tapping roots. Yet it is common to create a 1500mm deep tree pit with the nutrient soil for the tree in the bottom! In creating a deep tree pit and forcing root growth downwards we successfully force unnatural root development and place the tree under stress. Any soil at this depth will likely become compacted and as the aerobic microorganisms expend all available oxygen in the soil it will become anaerobic, releasing toxins and damaging the roots. It is therefore logical to design a tree pit that meets the trees requirements for shallow lateral rooting, provides the correct volume for the chosen species of tree, keeps the soil alive and healthy and provides a load bearing surface for pedestrians and traffic. This is where the ArborRaft System from Gt Specifier comes in. The ArborRaft System is a revolutionary load bearing tree pit structure, that when installed within hard landscaped areas provides a load bearing structure which allows 70 tonnes per m2 to pass over it.

The structural stability of ArborRaft provides essential protection for the tree pit and prevents soil compaction and damage to roots. By providing a load bearing structure near the surface you are able to plant the tree in nutrient-rich BS3882:2007 topsoil. At this level the moisture and oxygen levels in the soil are naturally replenished from the surface, keeping the microorganisms alive and the soil in peak health. The lower level of the tree pit levels can be built up with a suitable BS8601:2013 subsoil to provide a good anchoring material. The units that create the ArborRaft System can be backfilled with topsoil to provide additional stability for the structure and the newly planted tree. The additional topsoil provides sustained feeding over a longer period of time and promotes optimum growth and the healthiest possible start for the tree. Optimum root growth spreads from the trunk outwards, close to the soil surface and therefore the majority of the tree’s integral route structure will be close to the soil surface and trunk of the tree. The ArborRaft System sits in a raft position near the top of the tree pit and provides an air gap between the hard surface and the tree’s roots. This encourages root-growth but prevents them growing towards the surface. All of this ensures the health and success of the tree and of the urban landscape in which it is planted. hen you think of Britain in Bloom, you perhaps imagine pretty flowers decorating the streets of villages and 50 years ago this would have been a fairly accurate depiction.
50 Golden Years
In 1964, Bloom was started by the tourist board as a way to market Britain through floral displays. Since then, Bloom has evolved into what is now a nationwide campaign that is improving both the physical and socio-economic landscape of Britain with up to 300,000 volunteers investing upwards of 11 million hours into improving their local areas in towns, villages and cities. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) took over as organisers of the campaign in 2002, and has sought to bring Bloom into the twenty first century by widening the campaign’s focus to include both community participation and environmental responsibility. One of the biggest milestones came in 1996, when the RHS introduced It’s Your Neighbourhood (IYN). This noncompetitive arm of Bloom is open to all and has made the wider campaign more accessible which has boosted the impact

Planting has also changed over the years from the traditional, expensive bedding displays seen in the earlier years of the campaign to a more sustainable approach seen today. More than 50% of groups have switched from seasonal displays to more cost-effective planting that requires less watering, but is just as attractive. In 1964, Bath won the first Britain in Bloom and throughout the last 50 years the city has continued to achieve great things. This year, Bath won their category and were awarded a Gold. An RHS Judge said: “Although Bath has always been known as a floral city, it now embraces the community spirit that it so important to the success of the on-going campaign.”
of community gardening across the UK. 300 groups signed up in its first year and there are now almost 2000 IYN groups. Bloom has grown steadily through the years, with a 10% increase in sign-ups since 2013. It may come as a surprise that only one third of groups are led by the council, the rest are volunteer-led. Last year, volunteers raised nearly £20 million
through local fundraising activities. Indeed, council cuts have meant local government is relying on the work of Bloom volunteers more than ever before. UK-wide Bloomers look after more than 100,000 acres of public green space (325 Hyde Parks) which is freeing up councils’ time and money to invest into other services.
Shrewsbury, in Shropshire, won RHS Champion of Champions 2014 and RHS judges highlighted Bowbrook Allotment Community Site as one of the reasons the town was awarded this top accolade. As well as accommodating 85 organic growing plots and an impressive series of nature trails, individual gardens have been created on this volunteer-managed site, aimed to educate young people about native plants, conservation, and edible growing. The site relies on the wonderful camaraderie and community spirit of volunteers who have contributed more than 2000 hours to its upkeep. As well as awarding each national finalist with a Gold, Silver, Silver-Gilt or Bronze medal, the RHS also gives out a number of discretionary awards. For example, London Bridge received the RHS Britain in Bloom Environment Award 2014 for its impressive environmental practices which include green roofs / walls, rainwater harvesting, reduced use of peat compost and sustainable drainage systems. RHS Director General, Sue Biggs, said: “The annual RHS Britain in Bloom awards ceremony is not about one town, village or city beating another. It is about championing great community projects that make a difference to peoples’ lives. Granite Sett Paving Repointing for the Peace Gardens The natural stone paving through the Peace Gardens in Sheffield has been refurbished for Sheffield City Council using GftK's vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar. The natural stone paving was becoming loose and subject to damage due to the typical cracking and loss of strength problems associated with traditional and proprietary cement based jointing mortars that had all been tried without success. The Council's Engineers and their Contractor found the ideal solution was the unique; epoxy resin bound sand based, vdw 850 Paving joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape. This also enabled all of the work to be successfully completed and without having to completely close any areas of the gardens. Any visible damage was removed, the areas high pressure water jet cleaned, any loose stone setts rebounded in position and then the joints simply wet-slurry pointed with the vdw 850, which self-compacts into the joints. The surface is rinsed and then dry brushed-off and within a short period of time can be reopened for public access – also with no delays for cold or wet weather.

omes and businesses along the Severn Estuary have a safer future following the completion of the UK’s biggest ever coastal realignment scheme at Steart peninsula this September.
gradient and coarse vegetation saps the power from the Severn’s tides before they can damage property. This will help to protect local villages from the sort of storm surges that hit the UK coast last winter and, by protecting the new sea walls from erosion, it’s a solution that will last far into the future.
The Environment Agency put the idea to the local community five years ago in answer to the worsening state of the earth flood banks that protect the lowlying parts of the peninsula. It has been developed with the local community, the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), who manage the land, and CH2M Hill, the contractors.
Britain’s long coastline and the big tides that lap it, naturally create a large intertidal zone that’s rich in saltmarsh, our equivalent of tropical mangroves. However, over the centuries much of it has been reclaimed by building earth embankments like the ones fringing the Steart peninsula. Because climate change is raising sea levels, we’re now losing this habitat, and with it the services that it provides, ever faster.
Just before 7am on Monday September 8th, high tides came in through a newly excavated 200 metre gap in the aging coastal embankments and into a 250 hectare area that had been meticulously prepared for that day. A vast channel, three kilometres long had been excavated from the gap with smaller creeks running off it like the braches of a tree. Large shallow lagoons and scrapes had been dug and higher islands created. As the water flowed in, first the creeks and channels filled, then the water started spilling across the flat land. The area will flood like this about one hundred times each year, on the highest of the high tides. Tonnes of Severn Estuary silt will be deposited over the area, locking away carbon and each tide will bring in salttolerant plants that will, in time, bind it all together into a vast new saltmarsh. The area, named Steart Marshes by the local community, has been specially designed so that the saltmarsh’s shallow
Though Steart Marshes is the largest to date, it is still one of just a few that has been completed around the country. WWT’s Chief Executive Martin Spray said on the day of completion, “We need to be brave and bold if we are going to deal with the impacts of climate change. WWT Steart Marshes proves you can protect homes and businesses by using wetland technology that works with nature, not against it.” It has been a huge project, costing £20.7 million, but it will pay for itself in time by costing less to maintain the flood defence. To pre-dig those channels and manage the hydrological effects of the Severn tide, half a million cubic metres of soil and clay were moved (the same as the volume of concrete being used to build the world’s tallest building, the Kingdom Tower in Dubai).

Absolutely nothing was wasted and every last bit of spoil was used to create new embankments a kilometre or more inland. These banks won’t suffer the erosion of the old banks because the fringing saltmarsh will take much of the energy from the waves before they reach them. It’s a natural solution and a sustainable alternative to building ever higher concrete walls. WWT Steart Marshes is now a key part of the Severn Estuary’s coastal defences which 100,000 homes and businesses worth an estimated £5 billion in places such as Cardiff, Newport, Burnham, Clevedon, Portishead, Avonmouth and Berkeley. In such areas, there may not be the space to realign sea defences, so the focus falls on places where there is space so that homes and businesses can continue to be protected by harder engineering. Its value isn’t just in flood defence either. Much of the area was given over to mixed farming previously, but farming will continue at WWT Steart Marshes. Livestock will graze the reserve, helping with the management in a natural way, but also keeping it as productive land. Animals raised on saltmarsh sell for a premium because of the iodinerich plants they feed on, so as the marshes develop local farmers will be able sell them for a premium. In time the creek system will also become a nursery for young fish fry; in particular important commercial fish stocks such as sea bass which will help fisheries in the Bristol Channel and beyond.
And of course such a landscape has an intrinsic value and that has been opened up to the public too. About 10 kilometres of paths and bridleways have been created and improved to help more people enjoy the landscape. Saltmarshes are part of Britain’s rich coastal heritage. It’s the landscape that inspired Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” and many paintings by JMW Turner. They are also one of the most biologically productive habitats on the planet, rivalling even tropical rainforest. Steart Marshes was already attracting vast numbers of birds as the first tides came in. It’s going to be a haven for wading birds and wildfowl and it’s even hoped that the recently reintroduced Eurasian crane – the UK’s largest bird – will choose to breed there one day. An initial economic estimate of the goods and services that WWT Steart Marshes will provide values it at between half and £1 million every year. But its benefits are varied and far reaching and some, such as being a positive example of what is possible if we’re bold, can’t be quantified. It’s predicted that the Severn Estuary will lose about 660 hectares of sandbanks, mudflats and saltmarsh by 2025. WWT Steart Marshes is the biggest attempt to replace such habitat so far, but it makes up for less than half that loss. It’s hoped that success at Steart will encourage other communities along the coast to be bold in the face of climate change. wwt.org.uk

DO YOU USE A PETROL CUT-OFF SAW TO CUT SLABS OR BLOCK-PAVING? Working everyday with the safer use of petrol saws, BRICKWOKER are regularly asked by Professional Landscapers about cutting paving slabs using a cut-off saw (or disc cutter). Here is why the BRICKWORKER Slab Cutting Guide is the answer to the their key questions. We need to cut a straight line in the right place? – Some landscapers tell you they can cut a straight line in the correct position, some tell you many factors mean it’s not always that simple. If you lock a Slab Cutting Guide on to the slab at the start and finish marks, not only will you cut straight and accurate, you will cut quicker. I really want to be cutting ‘wet’ to suppress dust? – Dust on any site (even a residential garden) is a major issue, the saw user can be risking a serious fine by cutting dry. Petrol Cut-off Saw Operators Training Certificate Industry is demanding greater training in the use of petrol saws and soon many companies and many sites will require cut-off saw operators to hold a certificate proving they have been properly trained to use a petrol saw. A new half day training course covering all aspects of how to use a cut off saw safely, including selection and fitting of PPE, operating the machine. Successfully completing the course will enable operators to use a cut off saw safely and will result in an Industry recognised 3 year Certificate from the Cskills Awards, the awarding organisation of CITB. The training is a blend of theoretical and practical hands-on study, with attendees knowledge being assessed at the beginning and the end of the course, and a practical assessment – The training is Pass/Fail. Courses will be run at local Health & Safety Training Companies, selected Construction Colleges and In-house by Construction Companies who have a training requirement for use of cut-off saws on-site.

51 BALI members out of 77 who entered over 100 entries have won awards in this year’s prestigious BALI National Landscape Awards in association with Horticulture Week and headline sponsor Rigby Taylor. However, not until the awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London on Friday 5th December will they know who has won a Principal Award, Special Award or the coveted Grand Award. Tickets for the ceremony are now on sale. The Adjudication panel, chaired by Greg Allen, Senior Lecturer in Landscape Studies at Writtle College and dispute adjudicator, spent the summer visiting the shortlisted schemes and met at the end of August to agree the list of winners. Commenting on this year’s entries, Greg said: "BALI judges have travelled across the UK to review over 100 entries this year and have been hugely impressed with the high standards of design, workmanship and quality of entry submissions from BALI members. This year we have seen a 10% rise in the number of award winners overall and the job of selecting winners and Principal Awards proved to be a hard task and debated at length amongst the judging panel. BALI Award winners in 2014 can be assured that they have excelled in their work and truly impressed the judging panel. We look forward to revealing our exceptional Principal Award winners in December". BALI’s Chief Operations Officer Wayne Grills, who was an observer during the final adjudication, expressed his delight in the increase of entrants awarded this year and paid tribute to the judges who have given each entry their full commitment and consideration: “The standard of entries submitted this year has been phenomenal. As an observer it is a privilege to see these industry experts at work as they judge the entries. Their depth of industry knowledge, their understanding of the challenges presented by different schemes, and their unshakeable determination to only reward excellence, regardless of the effort and good intentions displayed by the contractor, is laudable.
