CREATING LONG-LASTING AND SAFE LANDSCAPES Planting trees can be challenging when it deals with allying design and safety on landscapes. If trees are not supported correctly, they may affect the aesthetic finish and security of the site. Platipus Anchors, the leading expert in tree anchoring for over 30 years, shows you tree anchoring solutions for two common planting situations.
Tree planting with anchors The rootball fixing system with Plati-Mat remains the preferred method for supporting trees underground when there are no buried services. The process consists of driving three anchors into the ground, and setting them into their working position. The Plati-Mat is the protection placed on top of the rootball to help secure and protect newly transplanted trees. The system naturally degrades to release the rootball after three to five years and creates an aesthetically pleasing finish to any landscape.
Urban Planting & Roof gardens D-MAN is a strong, compact and lightweight cell that has a distinctive letterbox style anchor point providing excellent stability to the tree. Each cell incorporates four unique cups that can store valuable water essential for tree growth and root development. D-MAN performs equivalent or better than most traditional kerbstones and is much easier to move around the site and in the tree pit. In addition, cells can be easily connected together and stacked to build up large planting areas, adding structural support, and protecting areas from possible damage. With this system, trees and large shrubs can be secured in any location and catchment water can drain underneath leaving the balance of water in the cups. Underground services will no longer be a concern in the urban environment.
Innovative irrigation and aeration system As well as anchoring and support, trees need effective irrigation and aeration. With many traditional irrigation systems, the water is distributed unequally around the rootball and often flows vertically to the bottom of the tree pit. In response to this, Platipus developed the Piddler tree irrigation system, a special membrane that delivers water and air evenly and laterally around the rootball targeting the root zone directly. This cost-effective irrigation and aeration system is quick to assemble, can be tailored to size and is suitable for all rootball dimensions. Platipus can also offer bespoke and permanent solutions for most planting situations.
They will be exhibiting at the Landscape Show in Battersea Park, on 22nd-23rd September. Come and discover their product range on stand C63. T: +44 (0) 1737 762300 04 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 15

From conversations with our clients, it soon became obvious that not only did they want the fast-growing screening offered by the willow and poplar, but also they were looking for great quality native trees and hedging from a company they could trust and work with collaboratively on projects of any size. We have gradually branched out and now offer a more diverse range of deciduous and evergreen borders, boundaries and barriers as well as formal, informal and specialist hedges and specimen trees. Plants are available as bare-root or container grown and we are monitored by DEFRA to ensure plant health and quality is never compromised. Bowhayes Trees have been involved with a number of different projects such as the creation of heritage oak woodlands, development of a new pinetum,
landscaping for housing developments, caravan parks, golf courses, the regeneration of industrial land and large biomass programs. As a family-run business we like to work closely with our clients to help create their vision. We have worked with garden and landscape designers, local authorities, private corporations, and schools. Our new website will be launching later this year and you will be able to order directly online. If you have a landscape or planting scheme you are working on, we would love to work with you. Long Rake Spar Decorative aggregate suppliers, Long Rake Spar supported the Spiralling Into Control garden at the RHS Tatton Flower Show this year, by donating their Derbyshire Gold, market leading Goldpath and striking Scottish Boulders. The garden, which was designed by Simon Fagg and built by Appleyard Landscape was part of the RHS’ Greening Grey Britain campaign and aimed to show visitors that they can create a front garden that incorporates the functionality of everyday life, alongside inspirational planting and sustainable water management. The design offered a responsible way of dealing with rainwater runoff with its green roofed car port and the SuDS compliant FlexiPave surfacing, supplied by KBI. The Flexi-Pave was supported by a Goldpath subbase, chosen because of its natural setting properties which bind the gravel together to create a compacted surface that remains firmer than conventional loose aggregate. The main planting beds were covered by bright Derbyshire Gold chippings which surrounded the striking central spiral, providing a distinctive contrast to the drought resistant green planting and the pink wooden sleepers of the raised beds. As well as offering a practical car parking area, Spiralling Into Control demonstrated how various aspects of gardening can be incorporated into an efficient and versatile space. Vegetable and composting areas were created alongside dedicated wildlife segments such as the sunken raingarden that was banked by Scottish Boulders to support a variety of habitats. The garden offered a unique experience to visitors at Tatton by showing how sustainability and planting can be integrated into any design when creating a front garden which is used for parking.

Prepare To Feed The Bees
Autumn is in the air and now is the time to prepare to feed the bees. As the temperature drops Britain’s bees are already preparing for winter. Honey bees are now in the process of removing the Drones (males) from the colony and the overwintering bees begin to emerge; as the summer foraging bees die after their late summer/early autumn foraging expeditions. Unlike the Bumblebee and Solitary bees they will not be in hibernation but living in a colony of 20-25,000 strong and look forward to a winter living off their summer stores – honey. Honey bees will come out for cleansing flights and to forage on bright days, you’ll spot them on the Winter flowering Mahonia and Honeysuckles during the winter months. NOW is the time to sow the flowering spring annuals, infill the gaps in the borders, verges with valuable early nutrition rich flowering bulbs. Extend the flowering season by planting trees for bees – a flowering tree can be the equivalent of an acre of forage in the sky which will provide colour, form and interest as well as fruits/nuts/seeds, for us or wildlife to enjoy. So in your autumn planning and planting remember to help the bees and provide them with nectar and pollen rich flowering plants needed to build strong colonies in the Spring. By extending the flowering season by having something always in bloom from February to October we will be helping to build a thriving healthy bee population. Get involved in supporting our bees and help Build the Buzz (www.buildthebuzz.co.uk) with the British Beekeepers Association. For information on planting for bees visit www.bbka.org.uk.

Lawn Care Fertiliser That’s Right For The Job Finding the right fertiliser product for your lawn care business can be complicated. The amenity market offers a wealth of options but not all of these are cost effective or suitable for use on a domestic lawn. The best approach is to consider your goals and choose with these in mind. Spring is the time to apply high nitrogen fertiliser for lush green growth. A product with slow release nitrogen will curb excessive mowing. It should also maintain the lush green growth right up until the next treatment in the summer. In summer you may need to apply a product with a low scorch potential, one that doesn’t need to be watered in. Organic material and biostimulants (e.g. seaweed extract) can also be applied to increase drought tolerance, keeping the lawn greener for longer and helping it recover quicker. In autumn it’s desirable to use a product high in potassium. This will strengthen the roots and prepare the grass for disease resistance through the winter ahead. Avoid applying high levels of nitrogen in autumn/winter as this will cause soft growth that is susceptible to disease. Products containing iron (Fe) or magnesium oxide (MgO) can be used any time of year to quickly green up the lawn. When using iron containing products avoid applying to hard surfaces such as patios and decking as staining can occur. GreenBest Ltd has been blending high-quality lawn care fertiliser for 14 years. We specialise in manufacturing bespoke products at competitive prices.
An SCH Grand Slam SCH (Supplies) Ltd recently delivered a hard surface maintenance package to Harpenden Tennis club in Hertfordshire. Comprising of a system tractor with two different brushes, the package is sure to be a very useful addition to the club during the busy summer months. SCH say that this is a flexible system and additional attachments can be added at a later date. The scarifying brush gives a light sweep for general, everyday maintenance, whilst the ride on grooming rake has two brushes, each with an adjustable ‘slider’ which can fine tune the aggression of the sweep. This brush can therefore be put to work when a more substantial groom is required.
14 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 15
A whole variety of sports surface maintenance machines are available from SCH, who manufacture products for natural turf sports surfaces as well as 3g and hard surface maintenance. Based in Suffolk and with almost 30 years’ experience, SCH say their machinery is built to last and priced to be affordable to smaller clubs. Spare parts are always available and the company also say they are happy to discuss bespoke builds with customers who do not find exactly what they are looking for in the brochure. For further information please contact SCH (Supplies) Ltd on: 01473 328272 - email sales@schsupplies.co.uk or visit the website - www.schsupplies.co.uk
Butterfly Conservation Butterfly Conservation is a national wildlife charity dedicated to saving butterflies, moths and the environment. Founded in 1968, it is the largest insect organisation in Europe, with a UK-wide network of 32 Branches and 34 nature reserves. Research shows that 75% of butterflies and 70% of moths are in decline, making them one of the most threatened wildlife groups. In the last century, four butterflies and 64 moths have become extinct here.
Sir David Attenborough has been President of Butterfly Conservation for more than 17 years and every summer encourages people to take part in their citizen science survey – the Big Butterfly Count. For three weeks people are asked to spend 15 minutes recording the butterflies they see and this year, more than 50,000 counts were submitted. Sir David said:
The charity works to safeguard important sites and landscapes for the UK’s 59 species of butterfly and more than 2,500 moths, setting up conservation projects to protect the endangered species.
“Butterflies are wonderful, extraordinary creatures. Numbers have been falling, but Butterfly Conservation scientists have demonstrated that these declines can be reversed. They have also found that when you change the environment to help butterflies thrive, all sorts of wildlife benefits. Nature comes back to life.”
Encouraging the scientific study of Lepidoptera and raising awareness of their role as indicators of climate change and a healthy environment are also key aims of the charity.
You can show your support for the charity by becoming a member or volunteering for your local Branch - visit www.butterfly-conservation.org for more information.

Pop Up Power Supplies® specified at Covent Garden Pop Up Power Supplies® recently supplied six retractable service power units for installation in the Piazza at Covent Garden. The 450kg units are buried out of site beneath the famous cobbled piazza and are raised out of the ground when required by a turning handle. When not in use the units do not impact on the historic appearance of the Piazza as they are barely noticeable. DESIGN FOR LIFE DESIGN COMPETITION Retrofitting Green Infrastructure Solutions for Neighbourhoods
INGENUITY
Your brief is to design a water sensitive retrofitting scheme for your neighbourhood. The scheme should be designed to increase resilience to hotter summers and wetter winters, which are predicted by climate scientists to become a more regular occurrence. The winner will be awarded £1000 and runners up £500. All winners will also benefit from a day of tailored expert input to help them develop their designs further. All shortlisted entries will also be showcased at a Design For Life awards event later in the year and featured on the Landscape Institute’s website. The closing date for submissions is Monday 21st September 2015.
When we design a product, we think about it from every dimension; how it will perform, how it will be installed, how it will affect the environment. Innovation has become second nature to us because we’ve been doing it for over 50 years. It’s ingenuity built in.

in natural appeal, TerraPave® in Rimini Textured fitted the bill. Enhanced with granite chippings, TerraPave® provides a luxurious finish for any prestigious development. But it’s not all about looks, TerraPave® is practical too. Suited to highly pedestrianised areas, the hard-wearing flags have provided a beautiful solution for Hayhurst Quay. As a contrast to TerraPave®, AG’s Plaza range was used in Silver Grey, Graphite and Slate. Plaza has many USPs that complemented this project. Not only is Plaza suitable for conservation areas but it has excellent slip resistance, ideal for any hard landscaping required near a waterway. Plaza has a superb natural finish too, which helps designers to achieve their vision. Using only the finest natural aggregates and sands, we have created a distinctive textured flagstone. The superb natural finish is manufactured to tight tolerances ensuring designs can be brought to life easily and accurately. The end result has breathed new life into the Northwich waterway and the hard landscaping provided by AG has once again proven to be the choice for leading redevelopment projects. engineered and manufactured under modern, controlled conditions. This consistently ensures accurate product and joint size, colour and texture, slip/ skid resistance and other performance characteristics. So, precast concrete paving offers a unique predictability enabling specifiers and adoption authorities to avoid risks with consistent, trouble-free performance over the longer term. Urban Design Opportunities But that does not mean compromise with urban design opportunities. With precast concrete paving distinct, modular units and designed variations in colour, texture and shape break up areas giving visual interest and a human scale not possible with formless materials such as asphalt.
Sustainable Paving Precast concrete paving from Interpave manufacturers is demonstrably sustainable in every sense. As well as low environmental impact – demonstrated by a host of ‘Green Guide’ A+ and A ratings – products are locally manufactured, making

to paving blocks, flags and kerbs to give different textures, some exposing the inherent aggregates. Surfaces can be honed for a flat finish or polished, or shot blasted to look weathered, or tumbled for a more rugged, naturalistic appearance. Combining these attributes with the range of shapes and sizes available enables designers to select paving styles, whether traditional or contemporary, enhancing environments from historic areas to vibrant new city spaces.
And of course concrete block permeable paving is a key sustainable drainage system (SuDS) technique, helping in the fight against flooding and pollution. It can also supply a controlled flow of clean water to other landscape features for amenity use in the landscape or recycling. It is one of the most space-efficient SuDS components available and does not require any additional land-take, making it an ideal solution for urban areas. In fact, it can handle runoff from roof drainage and

topped off by the three designers being interviewed by Monty Don for the BBC’s coverage of the show. The garden couldn’t have happened without all the support and donations from the sponsors in particular London Stone, Jackson’s Fencing, Hedgeworx, Urbis and Tactile Studios.
Particularly challenging was manoeuvring the large Taxus hedge into place with millimetre precision to incorporate the steel support structure from which the botanical panels hung. Many thanks also go to family and friends that were drafted in to help with all manner of things from planting to transport.

Recycled Design Showcases Student Talent at Manchester International Festival
Talented design students from the Manchester School of Art have brought a sense of fun to the roof terrace of Manchester International Festival in a competition to provide a striking contemporary furniture design using Stokbord® recycled plastic.
“A key focus for the winning team was collaboration and the differing perspectives of MA Product Design and BA 3D design students who have delivered amazing results that successfully combine cutting-edge design with inclusivity and playfulness.
The winning team responded to the brief to deliver 100 informal, colourful and comfortable outdoor seats for the central Festival Square venue, a bustling hub for MIF activities. The colour and diversity of the winning design has created a backdrop for a buzzing and sociable atmosphere in Manchester’s Albert Square until 19 July.
“The furniture has had an overwhelmingly positive response and looks set to be enjoyed by young and old. Creating multi-level seats that were comfortable for people across the generations was a key element of the students’ interpretation of the brief, which has worked brilliantly.”
The students were challenged to work with Stokbord recycled plastic sheet and board from Liverpool-based Centriforce Products to help meet the festival’s stringent sustainability objectives. After the event, the furniture will be moved to a permanent home in the public park next to the recently-refurbished Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester. The furniture’s playful design and references to stitching were incorporated by the students to hint at the Whitworth’s textile connections, as well as the park location. To win the competition the team of students presented to a ‘Dragon’s Den’-style panel representing senior University teaching staff, Manchester designers, and MIF. Says senior lecturer David Grimshaw:
The winning team were Emma Crabtree, Katia Mackowiak and Daecan Tee from MA Product Design, and Benjamin Ashton and Oliver Scholes, both BA 3D Design students. Stunning furniture made from Stokbord for the 2013 festival also returned to the Pavilion. As part of MIF’s ongoing upcycling theme the benches are now clad with 50 brightly-coloured unique cushions made by third-year Textile in Practice students, that referenced the design of the winning 2015 furniture. Stokbord provided the ideal material for the Festival challenge because of its robust, practical, weather-proof and environmentallyfriendly credentials. The Stokbord sheet is easy to cut to shape in a variety of thicknesses, so provided the ideal material. The sheets used for the furniture were cut to shape using
CNC machining techniques by festival partner 24 Design, and assembled by the students themselves. Ronnie Doctor, Marketing Manager for Centriforce Products said: “Centriforce welcomes the challenge of finding imaginative new ways to work our recycled plastic materials into unique and commercially-viable products. The students have really showed they can combine their skills to deliver an end-product that is soon set to have an exciting new life in Whitworth Park.” MIF is a festival of original, new work and special events and takes place biennially in Manchester, UK. The Festival launched in 2007 as an artistled, commissioning festival presenting new works from across the spectrum of performing arts, visual arts and popular culture. The Festival also encompasses MIFCreative, the community and learning focused arm of the Festival, bringing MIF to the people and communities of Manchester and learning from them in its turn. that are present around Felixstowe, which helped to maintain local history and heritage.
Martello Park is a newly created leisure and recreation space between the Martello Park housing development and the Felixstowe seafront. The area runs from Sea Road to Manor Terrace.
Commenting, Simon Walker, Suffolk Coastal Norse Property Services Manager said:
Suffolk Coastal District Council wanted to further enhance this public park space to add a new Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant public toilet block, additional play equipment, and a new entrance arch to provide identity to the main access from the existing seafront. Alpha Rail’s work included interpreting the drawings into a working design and the provision of 3D representations. The company then manufactured and installed a decorative metal archway with coloured lettering. The arch was powder coated blue with green highlighted areas. The top of the archway also featured grey squares with two small windows to resemble the military forts
“Alpha Rail provided a very straight forward and professional service from start to finish. Fabrication was managed in a timely fashion and flexibility offered in agreeing an installation date. The completed installation provided an entrance archway that was very much as envisaged from the conceptual drawings and provided the park entrance with the identity we anticipated.” Established in 1985, Alpha Rail is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of metal railings, gates, archways and other bespoke architectural metalwork. www.alpharail.co.uk

First CE-Marked timber deck boards launched in the UK John Brash & Co. Ltd is the first company in the UK to start CE Marking its entire range of timber deck board products.
CE Marking is mandatory for any product covered by a harmonised European Standard. It requires a complete audit trail to demonstrate that its processes and products all meet specific standards of quality.
“Anyone who uses John Brash deck boards on projects from simple decked areas at home through to vast open air expanses, such as walkways and open spaces on commercial projects – like those created for the Olympic Park – can have total confidence that our quality systems are third-party accredited and subject to regular audit and verification.”
John Brash & Co. Ltd.’s chairman, Christian Brash, said that achieving CE-Mark status is a proud day for the company, which tirelessly works to drive up standards right across its range of timber products.
John Brash & Co. Ltd has gone through an exhaustive process to achieve the CE Mark, including work with TRADA in setting out additional span tables based on Eurocodes.
“Being the first company in the marketplace to secure the CE Mark for all our timber deck boards is a huge achievement for John Brash,” said Christian.
Long before achieving the CE Mark, the company graded its deck boards – even though there was no specific British Standard or European Standard (EN) requiring this. It was also well aware that it was flying in the face of the industry convention that suggests that decking cannot be graded, as it is used flatwise rather than on edge, thus C16 and C24 strengths cannot apply.
The CE Mark will apply to the Lincolnshire-based company’s products, including JB Standard, JB CitiDeck and JB AntislipPlus, after completing training with TRADA for its C16 deck boards. The company had already achieved the CE Mark for its C24 decking through its work with BM TRADA.
“Our quest to achieve the CE Mark has always been driven by our singular aim of having a range of products that offer customers clear assurance that the timber has been produced and graded to strict standards under controlled conditions and are fit for purpose.
that take a load, so the introduction of the CE Mark is a validation of the company’s stance. Christian added: “John Brash has always set very high standards across all its products ranges – which also include timber roofing battens, scaffold boards and cedar shingles – and the introduction of the CE Mark for deck boards is another landmark for us. “We welcome standards such as the CE Mark because they demonstrate that wood products are the equal of other materials used in the construction industry and that contractors and builders can be assured of the quality and performance of our products.” www.johnbrash.co.uk

New Bridge Provides Essential Link Along Cornwalls Clay Trails
A new 31m x 3.5m Tied Arch bowed steel truss cycle/ bridle bridge linking St Austell to The Eden Project was recently installed by CTS Bridges during a night time road closure over the A391 Carluddon Road, Cornwall. The bridge provides an essential link for the ‘Clay Trails’ which form a network of walking, cycling and horse riding trails through mid-Cornwall encompassing the towering clay tips known collectively as the Cornish Alps. Alex Hoffen, Project Manager for Cormac praised CTS for a successful installation, saying ‘the bridge will benefit pedestrians, equestrians, cyclists,

young, old and disabled with the main aim being towards sustainability, health and wellbeing and the environment’. The bridge was designed by CTS as a tied arch formed from 500mm CHS with steel hollow section hangers and sub-frame. The deck was overlaid with rubber tiles in order to provide a safe and quiet surface for horse riders. The 1.8m high parapet comprises steel uprights and top rail with stainless steel weld mesh and a 625mm solid steel toe board. The bridge was transported in one piece from Huddersfield to Cornwall on a 5 axle triple extender step frame vehicle under police escort
for the last part of the journey. CTS planned and supervised the installation using a 350t crane. CTS Bridges specialise in the design, manufacture and installation of footbridges in timber, steel, FRP or combined materials to suit aesthetics and budget. Kebony Brings Historic Military Site To Life With Interactive Landscaping The historic ramparts at Vestvolden, Copenhagen, have been given another lease of life as the defining feature within the large municipal park. Designed by VEGA architects to bring the incredible story of the region’s history to life, “Play on the ramparts” is situated on the old fortifications, introducing play and movement to this historical landscape. Visitors to the expansive and undulating park are greeted by three thematic education stations installed in and amongst the physical remnants of a bygone era. The stations, in one small corner of the park, are designed to create a bridge between past and present, using traditional materials with a modern, sustainable twist, such as Kebony’s

Urban Oases Urbanisation is more frequently being associated with the disappearance of nature in the city, subsequently the availability and quality of public space is under threat. In our growing cities the social responsibility of Architects and Landscape Architects is now greater than ever to protect and revitalise public space for inhabitants. Alongside consideration for pedestrian flow, crowd control, safety and programming, the theme of “green” is inspiring a new future for public space. Many (Landscape) Architect’s have been inspired by the diverse range of modular

products available from Streetlife, who offer functional and aesthetic green solutions to suit a multitude of urban contexts. Examples of projects by Architects range from Oval Tree Isles with integrated benches embellishing the centre of Delft, bespoke Podium Isles in Amsterdam introducing permanent enhancements to the streetscape, and Mobile Green Isles composed of layered movable components in Calais in France. Streetlife’s international experience with Tree Isles ensure high quality results can be achieved across typologies that either sit on top of the pavement or are embedded
(approximately 15cm) into the ground. Seating can be easily integrated, according to Architects plans in the constructional metal wall. The seats are made from FSC® Hardwood beams, technically designed in the popular Rough&Ready (R&R) Range, the Solid Series, Standard Range and alternatively in SMCComposite beams. Tree Isles come in different shapes; round, oval and other fluid forms which compliment the movement of pedestrians. Beams can be positioned in long linear sections or short sections and radially to keep skaters away. The design of the seating also dictates the

diameters that are possible for round Tree Isles which begin at 3m and can reach to 4 and 5m. Oval Tree Isle dimensions are also dependant on the accommodation of adequate seating. Using straight edges, the Bento Tree Boxes create sleek rectangle shapes, linked together to form a geometric patterns and are integrated with R&R seats one meter deep. Mobile Green Isles come in modular units of 1.5 x 3 meters suitable for low planting in their 47 cm high walls. This design uses seating from the Solid series (long beams 7 x 7 cm) and can optionally be fitted with a back support. The inclusion of trees is made possible by adding centrally located tree planters for additional layering. Due to the Composite Tree Isle being made of aluminum it is lightweight and very suitable for (roof) terraces to provide limited outdoor spaces such as offices with flexible green areas.

As a result Architect’s are enabled to strengthen their overall vision and concept. Streetlife’s simple design rules throughout its product ranges, including the Podium Isles, Tree Grills and Benches ensure a total design plan can be created with consistency in quality, color, theme and materials. Tyrannosaurus Recs Horsham’s New Recreation Facilities Bring Dinosaurs Back to Life eibe Play has been working with tourist attractions, district councils and schools for the last two decades. Effecting inventive children’s playspaces featuring imaginative designs and unique, long-lasting products is the reason we exist. Everything we do – it’s just child’s play! Building on the successes of other high profile projects at Kew Gardens, Paulton’s Park and LEGOLAND, eibe was thrilled to win a £140,000 contract to install a very special park in West Sussex this summer. 'Dinosaur Island' is a brand new adventure play area for Horsham Country Park. The previously run-down recreation space now features an array of fantastic play equipment and special effects such as an active volcano, red hot lava flows, a tar quagmire, a dinosaur swamp and a prehistoric jungle. It is a delightful themed playspace that commemorates a past age. It is sure to keep children entertained for many years in the future. Paul Redden, eibe’s managing director, believes the choice of equipment by Horsham District Council was critical in terms of appealing to a diversification of ages: “Toddlers through to teenagers can use the park. For the older kids, there’s the zip wire across lizard infested ditches and a really exciting aerial walkway along sheer slopes to look out over the Country Park lake. The small ones will love crossing the dinosaur bones and deadly swampland. Even the parents will enjoy swinging through the jungle and climbing the volcano!” The important specification of products stemmed from consultations with local schools. The key stakeholders in the Eastern Shires Procurement Organisation (ESPO) tender then deliberated, and taking on board the feedback from the children, opted for eibe’s innovative proposal. It was our uniqueness of products that stole the show, mixed with our empathy in mirroring the council’s own mission to regenerate the area and theme it in a natural way, thus creating a destination park that would ultimately entertain and educate. The initial concept was a 3D Masterpiece created by design director David Hibberd and his team.
76 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 15
So began the detailed design stage. Many tweaks and adjustments were made to the first draft. “Working in harmony with Deborah Mallard, the council’s landscape architect, we had to take into account the contours and landscaping of the park,” says Hibberd, “Being mindful of the standards of foundations needed for our high duty equipment was a design imperative. Several visits were necessary to plot the slopes, paths and natural swales. Back in the studio, we adapted our designs accordingly. An accompanying video had a huge impact with the client.” 01483-813834

Check Wooden Playground Equipment Quickly & Reliably With The Resi-PD Microdrill. Phil Wade – Sorbus International Limited Sorbus International Ltd supply a comprehensive range of specialist working equipment, PPE, Clothing & Hi-tech devices for Landscaping, Arboriculture, Forestry, Utilities, Grounds Maintenance and Environmental Care in the UK & worldwide. We are also the exclusive UK distributors of the impressive Resi-PD micro drill which is extensively used in Germany & elsewhere to test wooden play equipment for decay/defects.
In the example below, the wood structure was tested by drilling a pole horizontally just above ground level. The result (top) shows good penetration & FEED resistance confirming that the wood is in good condition at this point. The peaks & troughs on the curves indicate the annual growth rings. However, when the same pole was drilled at 30° below ground level, the result (lower) shows that the penetration & FEED resistance curves are significantly reduced. The wood is therefore extensively decayed below ground level and this pole needs to be replaced immediately.
In the UK there is no current legislation requiring that outdoor play equipment be assessed & managed via playground inspections. However, a number of organisations recommend regular inspection as best practice and as a duty of care. These include the BSI, HSE & Insurance companies. Wooden playground/adventure equipment should be regularly checked for decay/defects to avoid possible accidents. Inspection should also include trees that form part of the structure. Very often the extent of deterioration cannot be detected by visual inspection alone or using traditional methods such as sounding the wood with a hammer. Such techniques rely on subjective assessments that can lead to erroneous conclusions. A fast, reliable & accurate method for detection of early wood defects is required that does not rely on subjective assessment. The Resi-PD microdrill is ideal for this purpose being suitable for timber inspection above and below ground. Although rot can occur anywhere on the play structure, the area immediately above and below ground level is ideal for decay fungi to proliferate due to favourable moisture, oxygen and temperature conditions. The Resi-PD is suitable for testing all types of timber used in the construction of play equipment - including Robinia. The Resi-PD drives a rotating 1mm steel needle with a chisel cutting tip into the wood at constant speed. The energy required to do this is monitored & recorded by the instrument. Apart from measuring the penetration resistance the Resi-PD also has the unique needle FEED rate recording facility which is very sensitive to early timber deterioration. Consequently the device is not only capable of detecting advanced decay, cavities & cracks but also early incipient decay; giving clear, unambiguous & objective information regarding wood condition in minutes.
78 Landscape & Urban Design Issue 15
The Resi-PD microdrill electronically records all the drilling data including location, time, date etc. Test results can be easily downloaded via Bluetooth or USB link to a PC for inclusion in historical data & test reports. Apart from being ideal to assess the structural integrity of wooden play equipment, this device is also used for testing all types of wooden structures including trees, utility poles, bridges, jetties, boats and beams in historic buildings. The Flood Expo, returns to ExCeL, London on 14th and 15th October after the huge success of the launch show last December. The largest event of its kind in the world presents solutions to widespread flooding problems with 80 expert seminars, informative debates covering current issues in the industry, live demonstrations on the Thames and 150 innovative industryleading suppliers. Amazingly, tickets are absolutely FREE and you can register online at www.thefloodexpo.co.uk or call 0117 930 4927. You’ll find the latest research, products and solutions on the marketplace to help minimise – or even better, entirely avoid – the risk of potential flooding. This event is unmissable for anyone who works within the flood industry and works in an industry that can be affected by flooding. Make sure you have it in the diary and don’t miss out on the limited free tickets. The show has also been awarded with the country’s best new exhibition at this year’s Exhibition News Awards which took place in London on Friday 10 April. The accolade received by Flood Expo, which made its debut in December 2014 at ExCeL London, was reward for the passion, innovation, and diligence put into its organisation by its creators at the PRYSM Group. Event director Jon Greenslade said “It’s an absolute honour and a privilege to receive this award. I’m absolutely thrilled that all our effort in creating this event have been recognised at the exhibition industry’s most prestigious event. I’m even more excited now about the expo’s future and the service it provides to the flood professionals.” The show has evolved since the launch show with the Environment Agency becoming more involved with a networking area and seminar theatre. The live demonstrations on the Thames have doubled as well as the scale of the products being showcased at the ExCeL. There has also been another networking area added for the Search and Rescue industry and there is a seminar theatre dedicated to Flood Tech, covering innovative topics to revolutionise the flooding industry. The Flood Expo fully encompasses everything to prevent, manage and protect against the force of flooding. Interested in exhibiting? and contractors to using either petrol or generator driven electrical gardening equipment. All that has changed with the launch of the new 56 volt lithium ion powered cordless range from EGO Power+.
The lithium ion battery technology powering the range is the result of many years of work. The cells in the three different sized batteries are configured in a patented arc to help keep them cool in operation and charging. They are also surrounded by a phase-

head-on with petrol but without the fuel, noise, fuss or fumes. EGO drives cordless technology, flexibility and power up to a totally new level. With a recharge time from flat of just 30 minutes, the 4.0Ah battery will provide up to 45 minutes of mowing. The EGO cordless lawnmower and accompanying hedge cutter, line trimmers, chain saw and blower meet the critical and exhaustive demands of the landscape sector in terms of performance and durability. On a single charge the lawnmower has sufficient power to cut up to 800m2 of lawn with no fuss or emissions and with virtually no vibration or noise. With two batteries, one in use the other on charge, there is limitless power. The cost of recharging the 4.0Ah battery is around the 5pence mark making it considerably cheaper than petrol equivalents. The environmental and financial benefits of EGO are compelling. “We describe EGO as having ‘Power Beyond Belief’ and it really does have to be experienced to fully appreciate what we are claiming,” says EGO’s marketing director, Steve Roskell. “This is a
Since its launch in the United States at the beginning of the 2014 season, EGO has become one of the top selling cordless brands in North America. The lawnmower is a three-in-one machine offering users the choice of rear collect, side discharge or mulching. It is sold complete with a 4.0Ah battery and fast charger and retails at £499 inc. VAT (€699). The other products in the range are sold without the battery or charger, all of which are fully interchangeable and can be bought separately. “Landscape designers and contractors are a key target market for us,” says Steve. “Our research has shown that many operators are reluctant to make the switch to cordless because of poor performance and extended recharge time. All that is now history as EGO has totally re-written the power garden products rule book and set new standards that others will have to follow.” The range is available nationwide through Henton and Chattell’s dealer network. Steering the way A zero turn with power steering and soft grip steering wheel, the TANKSZ60 seems to have it all. Cub Cadet continues to lead the way with the TANKSZ60, a solid commercial addition to its awardwinning range of ride on tractors. The TANKSZ60, a zero turn lawn tractor with the welcome extra of a steering wheel, has been specifically designed for professional everyday use. This is particularly useful over challenging terrain and is ideally suited to areas up to 20 acres. With unrivalled manoeuvrability, stability, durability and comfort, the TANKSZ60 really does stand out from the crowd. Hills once considered almost impossible to mow on a zero turn rider are easily conquered by this commercial zero turn. This stability, performance and the excellent traction on hills enables operators fast mowing speeds in incredible comfort. A high backed elasticity vibration control (EVC) comfort seat with arm rests makes for a comfortable place to spend hours of productive

mowing. The soft grip steering wheel can be positioned to suit the operator using the quick adjusting steering column and the power steering manoeuvres the TANKZ60 through even the sharpest corners. Most users will find the steering wheel gives greater control than traditional ‘stick steer’. The confidence gained from the stability and precision control thanks to the four wheel steering means users can maximise the machines abilities and deliver a quality cut on even a 20 degree incline where other mowers may struggle. It is easy to see what makes the TANKSZ60 stand out in the commercial sector for those considering a zero turn mower. With unbeatable corrosion protection and durability thanks to an electronically applied dual layer of e-coat and powder provides superior protection against unforgiving environmental conditions and ensures that even
the most complex parts are evenly coated. This precise, multi-step process delivers automotive grade corrosion resistance and perfectly suited to the UK environment. The TANKSZ60 is powered by a commercial grade 27hp Kawasaki FX series V-Twin OHV engine, which delivers higher horsepower and maximum torque for enhanced performance. A heavy duty remote air canister filtration system and a premium cooling system also provide a durable, long-life machine. So, whether you are facing two or twenty acres, the TANKSZ60 delivers a professional grade cut, whilst providing a comfortable place to be for hours of pleasurable mowing. More information on the TANKSZ60 can be found online or through local garden machinery dealers. www.cubcadet.co.uk

ProGreen® Artificial Grass Launches in the UK
Leading US-based artificial grass manufacturer, ProGreen, is establishing a network of UK-based accredited installers as the company expands into the UK for the first time. The move is likely to shake up the UK market as ProGreen is renowned for its product quality. Backed by some 30 years of research and development, each of ProGreen’s products is scientifically designed, manufactured and tested in-house in the USA to the highest standards. Key to the quality test is each product’s polyurethane, not latex, backing. Latex typically degrades more quickly and is favoured by most other manufacturers. Given their durability, ProGreen products each carry an 8-year insured warranty, the best product guarantee available on the market. ProGreen aims to help people make the most of their outdoor space at any time of year, with typical customers including young
families, retirees and the time-poor. Commercial clients include schools and nurseries; sports pitch owners; restaurants, hotels and pubs; and showrooms. ProGreen turf is also increasingly popular with pet owners owing to ZeoFill, a proprietary infill product made of purified volcanic ash, which erases pet odours completely and never needs to be replaced. Andy Webb, Sales Manager for ProGreen Europe, said: “It’s an exciting time to be part of ProGreen. We are expanding quickly and now looking to build a high quality network of UK installers with whom to service our growing customer base here. We’ve had hugely positive customer reviews and look forward to broadening our customer base to all corners of the country.” For further information and contact details, visit: www.progreen-grass.com

MAKITA HUB-DRIVE INNOVATION FOR 36V BRUSH CUTTER Brushless motor housed in cutting head Twin 18v Lithium-ion batteries for powerful 36v motor Up to 90 minutes run time with nylon line-head
Makita’s reputation for innovative engineering and design becomes even more evident in the range of machines available for grounds maintenance, landscaping and gardening. The cordless range for this market sector is rapidly expanding and the advanced features of twin 18v batteries to provide powerful 36v motor performance, coupled with the advantages of the Brushless, with low-friction motors, low noise, low vibration and zero emissions, makes an attractive proposition. The new Makita DUR365UZ 36v cordless brush cutter has the brushless motor in the cutting head which is a major advancement in performance, reduced weight and improved balance. Traditionally, the drive motor, electric or petrol, is located at the top end of the shaft close to the operator. In this new and innovative cordless model there is no drive shaft running down the tube to the cutting head, only the umbilical cord that carries the battery power and sophisticated electronic control messages to the compact, Brushless motor integrated with the cutting head. With a cutting diameter of 350mm and a running speed of up to 6,500rpm the new 3-speed Makita DUR365 brush cutter will give a run-time of 90 minutes in low-speed mode when powered by two fully charged18v 5.0Ah Lithium-ion batteries. In high-speed operation a 31 minute run-time can be achieved and 52 minutes in middle speed. For the operator this lightweight 5.2kg machine has a comfortable waist cushion and shoulder strap and a small protector for a better view of the cutting area. The Makita DUR365 is delivered as a body only unit with 350mm diameter nylon cutting head. The DUR365UZ comes with nylon cutting head, safety goggles, hex wrench, blade cover, shoulder strap and accessory bag.

The Turfdry Greens Drainage System using Hydraway Sportsdrain installed at Enfield Golf Club in 2014 - as part of broader flood mitigation works that also included fairway drainage - performed so well over the winter that the club quickly contacted Turfdry to design and install its greens drainage system on a further seven greens. The satellite survey of the course initially undertaken for the 2014 works again formed the foundations of the design work, and was supplemented by a number of site visits to ensure total sensitivity to the demands of the club and the issues present on the course. Despite some typically challenging British weather, the intallation was carried out quickly and efficiently, much to the delight of the club’s General Manager, Paul Beresford-Green: “Turfdry have again exceeded expectations for design, consultative approach and quality of workmanship. I am completely confident giving Turfdry our unreserved endorsement, and will happily engage their services again if and when the need arises.”

Turfdry was recently contacted by the historic and prestigious Chelsea Physic Garden – the oldest botanic garden in the capital, under Grade 1 Listed protection and with HRH The Prince of Wales as patron– due to considerable waterlogging issues on its marquee lawn. The works needed completion in time for the impending 2015 opening, so speed - as well as the close care and attention demanded by a site with such rich heritage - was required. Particular attention was paid to the protection of the trees and their roots, and special care had to be taken to ensure the site’s valuable topsoil was preserved without contamination. This was complicated by the tight nature of the site, which demanded careful planning and execution by Turfdry’s skilled team. The work was completed with ‘Big Roll’ turfing just in time for the opening of the gardens, with Turfdry packing up just as the eager public were ushered into the garden. Subsequent visits have revealed that the turf has taken very well – despite its heavy usage – and that the Garden’s summer events schedule is in full swing.
W E T L A N D S C O N S T R U C T I O N E D M O N T O N , L O N D O N Following a series of successful works for Enfield Council – including drainage at Whitewebbs Golf Club, Enfield Golf Club, and the creation of a watercourse and construction of a flood barrier at Firs Farm Park – Turfdry was recently contracted to construct wetlands scheme at Pymmes Park, Edmonton, designed primarily to improve the water quality of the lake in the park.
The Council’s Senior Engineer designed the scheme, though Turfdry was able to contribute to design changes as the project progressed, which included the re-levelling of a badly undulating football pitch in the park, using material excavated from the wetlands cells. Despite complications posed by the uncovering of a large WWII-era bomb shelter – which saw Turfdry work in conjunction with a team of archaeologists to ensure the discovery became part of historical record – the works ran very smoothly. With all excavation and re-levelling works completed, planting has already taken place in the wetlands, which should flourish over the next 12 months, adding aesthetic value to the park, and providing a rich habitat for plants and animals.

Aztec Gas Fire Table (1m x 1m x 0.5m)
GB Sport and Leisure UK Ltd, the UK agents for Dutch manufacturer Ijslander, are handling multiple enquiries from landscape architects following the release of details of some recent multi use games areas manufactured by Ijslander.
Garden Design and Landscaping Professionals, Ginkgo Gardens, is certainly not just your average garden company. Founded in 1990 and now jointly run by directors, Dan Curran and Anthony Challis, the business is growing from strength to strength.
Built from stainless steel and granite, the Aztec gas fire table features an 18kw LPG or NG burner, battery ignition, choice of fuel beds, unique removable glass wind shield, 316 marine grade stainless steel lid and trim and a fabric cover for the winter.
“The Ijslander Citybox has demonstrated its unique qualities and flexibility that we knew it was capable of” commented GB Sport and Leisure MD, Gary Barber. “The way the city centre project has created a striking venue that appeals both to the players and passers-by, has demonstrated what we believe is the new benchmark for MUGA designs.”
“Our ethos is to provide imaginatively designed, well-built gardens with an emphasis on plants, based on proper horticultural principles and always delivered on time to budget. The Ginkgo plant has been around for millions of years and the name stands for ‘longevity’, which is certainly something we strive to achieve.”
Starting with a team of two the staff numbers have gradually risen to nearly 100 over the past twenty five years with over 14,000 completed projects under their belt, including contracts with Peabody Estates, Notting Hill Housing and more recently designing the Ginkgo Gardens are a specialist horticultural new garden at Caprice Holding’s latest venture, The Ivy Chelsea Garden.

Trees Direct was established in 1999 and have supplied quality trees and shrubs to designers, councils, contactors, educational trusts and plantings for country estates as well as corporate gifts. Most importantly, always taking care to protect and preserve the environment and wildlife.
The Charcon team worked closely with the landscape planners and engineers at Leicester City Council to create three bespoke products – Charcon Andover Washed paving in Pink Granite, Heather Porphyry and Tuscan Porphyry – to meet the design specification and particular colour scheme. The project is a real testament to Charcon’s bespoke product design expertise, high-quality manufacturing output and ability to create unique paving solutions which perfectly match a specific set of criteria.
We have worked with The Woodland Trust, The Elm Conservation Foundation and The Royal Institute together with other environmental organisations. We are aware that every project, large or small, is personal and important to the client, so we are always open to discuss ideas, offer guidance and advice to ensure total satisfaction in our service. Hauraton channels used as perimeter drainage at Brooke Church of England School Located in Brooke village about six miles South of Norwich, The Brooke Church of England Primary School is a brick building surrounded by an asphalted playground which tended to flood when there was heavy rain. As part of a number of measures designed to reduce future flood risk it was decided that the existing drainage needed to be upgraded. The Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC® C250, HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings was specified by NPS Group of Norwich, and used to provide perimeter drainage right around

the school building. This continues 104 metre channel run not only drained the asphalt playground it prevented standing water reaching the walls and acted as a drain for roof downpipes. The FIBRETEC® grating design helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating and important consideration for the Brooke project. The RECYFIX® channel component is made from 100% recycled PE-PP. The channel for the Brooke project has an intake cross section of 92 cm2.

Tree works with Trim a Tree – Highlighting the importance of working with fully qualified Arboriculturists
Lappset’s ‘Classic’ Finno range has always been a favourite and can be seen in many play areas throughout the country.
Cutting trees is not a straight forward process as in certain circumstances it could be that tree pruning may be necessary to maintain a tree in a safe condition, improper pruning can lead to trees becoming unsightly, diseased and potentially dangerous. Most professionals can assess your trees from visual inspection and can advise you on what relevant actions to take and ensure that the trees aren’t legally protected nor have birds nesting, all of which carry a criminal offence.
We are pleased to announce the launch of ‘NEW’ Finno a range which – whilst keeping the traditional tried and tested formula – has modern twists, stylish looks and a choice of colours. A great look for that modern park feel.
Trim a Tree has been trading for over 17 years and carry out professional works at all times. If you need advice on any tree work give us a call on 01908 410555.
