Small scale success for C & M C & M is applying the precision skills it generally applies on parts such as hydraulic connectors for the mining industry to the production of miniature locomotive components for railway modellers. The company is producing perfectly proportioned wheels, axles, tyres and buffers for a scale model railway organisation.Wheels are typically 6 to 7mm in diameter and buffers 3 to 4mm in diameter. But despite their small size the parts have to be perfectly scaled replicas of the originals — and it is not just ones and twos for individual modellers, but production quantities of 5,000-0ff.

‘MCERTS’ event expanded to become ‘AQE 2013’ The organisers of the highly successful MCERTS conferences have announced that the format of the next event will be considerably expanded. The focus on testing and monitoring will remain, but ambient air quality will be addressed in addition to environmental emissions and workplace exposure. As a result, the will be ambient air quality monitoring and the theme of the second day will be industrial emissions to air. AQE 2013 (Air Quality & Emissions Show 2013) is the seventh in a series of specialist air monitoring events and will take place at the International Centre in Telford, UK, on 13th and 14th March. In common with the previous MCERTS events, AQE 2013 will also include 50 free walk-in/walk-out workshops and an exhibition featuring over 80 of the world’s leading organisations in air quality and emissions monitoring products and services. Visitors to AQE 2013 are likely to come from a wide variety of sectors including central government, local authorities, industrial process operators, test houses, consultants, researchers, academics, instrument manufacturers, the media and anyone with a professional interest in air quality. Event organiser Marcus Pattison believes that the expanded remit for the event is a logical progression. “The need to produce accurate, reliable emissions monitoring data is the same whatever the industrial process,” he says. “Furthermore, the technologies are invariably the same and the people responsible for emissions are often also responsible for all aspects of environmental monitoring, including workplace monitoring, ambient monitoring, leak detection, fugitive emissions, fenceline monitoring etc. So
8
it makes a lot of sense for all of this to be brought together under one umbrella – AQE 2013.” The Source Testing Association (STA) established the original MCERTS event with Environmental Technology Publications in 2002 and has organised every event since. The STA’s Dave Curtis is pleased with the plans for AQE 2013. He says, “The MCERTS events were ultimately about the protection of air quality, so it makes sense for AQE 2013 to have an expanded remit to include everybody with an interest in air quality and emissions monitoring.” Emissions monitoring will remain one of the event’s central themes, but the addition of other applications for gas and particulate monitoring will substantially increase the scope and size of the event. For example, whilst the MCERTS events addressed the needs of those affected by the Environmental Permitting Regulations (large and/or complex industrial processes), AQE 2013 will also meet the needs of Local Authorities for ambient monitoring and for the many thousands of industrial processes that Local Authorities regulate. AQE 2013 will also hold great appeal for international visitors, because in addition to an update on EU regulations, it will also provide an opportunity to see all of the latest technologies in air quality and emissions at one specialist event. AQE 2013 Conferences Commissioner for the Environment, the AQE conference theme will be ‘2013 – Year of Air’ and many of the sector’s leading authorities on air quality have agreed to speak at the conference. Day 1: Ambient Air Conference,
13th March (*recognised by IAQM for CPD) Brian Stacey, speaking on behalf of Defra, will outline EU and UK air quality policy, followed by Prof. Frank Kelly from King’s College London, who will then discuss the future of air quality monitoring. He will discuss outline advances in sensor, data storage and communication technologies which have led to an expanding range of time resolved mobile sensors for air pollution, and how these sensors present an opportunity to make a step-change improvement in the quality, accuracy and scope of reliable exposure metrics for use in population studies, thereby helping to establish a more robust and targeted link between air pollution and negative health outcomes. Prof. Roy Harrison from Birmingham University will deliver a presentation in which he will explain how to gain added value from monitoring data by understanding air pollution processes. He will illustrate have been derived from the analysis of routinely collected data and will cite examples including explanations of relative nitrogen dioxide and NOx emissions, sulphate concentrations and PM10. Emily Jarvis from SIRA will explain the role of instrument of continuous ambient air quality monitoring systems (CAMs) and Ruth Fain from Golder Associates will explain how Section 106 agreements (section 75 in Scotland) have successfully enabled air quality monitoring programmes to ensure that development does not have a detrimental effect on air quality. Ruth has direct experience of using the legislation and will be able to present examples of where it can be used. (*This conference has been recognised by the Institute of Air Quality Management as valuable

Continuing Professional Development for its members and other air quality professionals). Day 2: Process Emissions Conference, 14th March Richard Vincent, Head of Industrial Pollution Control at Defra will explain the Directive with particular reference to the Directive’s prescriptions concerning best available techniques and their use in environmental permitting. Other speakers, including Rod Robinson from NPL and Carsten Roellig from TÜV will also cover European legislation, monitoring methods and standards, with particular emphasis placed on critical aspects such as uncertainty calculation, maintenance interval, correlation Wiggins, from the Environment Agency will then discuss Operator Monitoring Assessment (OMA), which provides a systematic tool for auditing the monitoring provisions required by an operator’s permit by scoring the degree of risk. Odour is an increasing concern in many sectors and Nana Ampomah, also from the Environment Agency, will explain the role of odour management plans. International Exhibition The AQE 2013 exhibition (www. AQEshow.com) will be larger than previous events, with the inclusion of regulators, accreditation organisations, instrument manufacturers and software developers, test houses, laboratories, consultants, calibration gas providers and abatement equipment providers. In combination, the exhibitors, which will come from all over Europe, North America and Japan, will provide a comprehensive view of the latest products and services in the air quality sector. Many of the exhibitors will launch new products at AQE 2013. For example, DustScan will launch a PM10 sampler which is a low-cost, battery-powered, and Air Monitors will launch two new technologies that Managing Director Jim Mills says will change the face of air quality monitoring: “A new ambient in the gaps that cannot be addressed by larger conventional stations, providing real-time spatial coverage over a wide area. “We will also launch a new particulate monitoring technology ‘FIDAS’, which will complement the FDMS technology (which has recently passed TÜV tests
PECM113.indd 9
proving EU equivalence for PM10 and PM2.5). FIDAS offers additional information on particle size distribution from 0.18 – 30 microns and particle number and mass in each size range.” Air Products will launch a new range of multi-component ISO17025 gas mixtures including NO, SO2, CO and CO in Nitrogen. Turnkey Instruments will launch the fourth generation of its Site Compliance Monitor the CM3, for monitoring noise and vibration. The Horiba stand will feature the new PG-350E portable gas analyser and Kisters will launch the latest version of AquisNet DAS – software for monitoring stations. Sigma-Aldrich/Supelco will launch the new ASSET™EZ4-NCO Dry Sampler for isocyanate measurements in air. This sampler was developed in Sweden and complies with ISO 17734-1. AQE Workshops Over 50 workshops will be available during the event and whilst visitors will not have to reserve places; they will have to plan their visit carefully in order to ensure that they attend the most relevant workshops and conference presentations, whilst also allocating time to visit the exhibition. The workshops are designed to provide an informal environment in which environmental practitioners are able to share information, much of which involves practical case studies. The workshop programme will cover a broad spectrum of subjects relating to the measurement of gases, volatiles, particulates and heavy metals within industrial processes, stack emissions and the ambient environment. The workshops will address the monitoring of every important parameter and new technologies will be described for a wide variety of monitoring applications. Many of the exhibitors that will be launching new products will utilise workshops to explain the applications for their technology. AQE Partner: Environmental Protection UK (EPUK) EPUK aims to improve environmental quality for everyone in the UK. It seeks to bring together environmental professionals, industry, policy makers, academics and members of the public to policy and practice in areas such as air quality, so EPUK shares many of the core objectives of AQE2013. EPUK President Prof. John Murlis believes that, as air quality monitoring
plays such an important part in the work of EPUK members, AQE2013 will provide an ideal opportunity to meet air monitoring professionals and to take advantage of the many facilities that AQE has to offer. “It is extremely important to be able to understand the factors that affect air quality, so accurate, reliable monitoring has a vital role to perform,” he says, adding: “Regulations are often improved or developed as a result of advances in monitoring technology, so I hope that a good number of our members will be able to attend AQE 2013. It will provide them with the latest information on both regulatory and technological developments, whilst helping them to understand better what is now possible in determining the relationship between emissions and ambient air quality.” AQE Partner: The Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM) Roger Barrowcliffe, Chairman of the IAQM, believes that air quality is an environmental issue which concerns many members of the public and represents an outstanding problem for government at all levels. He says: “Despite consistent progress in reducing emissions from industry and road transport, we have not yet achieved universal compliance with the standards and guidelines we use to protect the health of humans and ecosystems. To make more progress we need to increase our understanding of the problems and to utilise even better techniques in our management of air quality. “The AQE show provides a timely forum to keep air quality professionals in touch with the latest technology and to exchange ideas with their peers. The IAQM strongly supports events of this kind, which facilitate professional development and positive interaction between members of the air quality community. As an active air quality professional, I look forward to participating in the AQE Show and meeting other people with an interest in our subject.” For visitors that pre-register at www. AQEshow.com, entry to the exhibition and workshops is free of charge, and also includes complimentary parking, food and refreshments. Entrance to the AQE 2013 conferences will cost £55 per day or £100 for both days.

monitored.” Traditionally, ambient air quality has been monitored by networks of large monitoring stations that are costly to purchase and operate. In many instances these installations require planning permission, so it is not always possible to locate them in the ideal position. However, Air Monitors will launch a new battery operated technology that provides good quality reliable data in a monitor that can be easily mounted on any lamp post. Jim says “The main advantages of this technology, known as AQMesh, are that it can be positioned almost anywhere, and therefore provides cost-effective data that are complementary to existing networks; improving spatial coverage and enhancing models. This will help ensure that readings are more representative of the air that people breathe.” Air Monitors will also launch a further technology that will substantially improve the value of ambient particulate monitoring. The FIDAS (Fine Dust Analysis System) complements existing PM monitoring technology such as the FDMS (which has recently passed TÜV tests proving EU equivalence for PM10 and PM2.5) by offering additional information on

Fuel Gas Success Story encountered problems with one of their Fuel Gas installations. The technology in use was a Vortex Flowmeter and the engineer had concerns that it was over-reading by 20-30%, according to on-site Calculations. The Flowmeter had been calibrated which made no difference to the errors in measurement. They approached JWF who found that the Fuel Gas Line had an in-line Densitometer approximately 7-10D Upstream from the “problematic” Vortex. JWF advised that the problem could be linked to the in-line Densitometer which would cause a the Vortex uses, this would have an effect on measurement accuracy. JWF recommended installation of the ABB Swirlmeter - unaffected by Following installation, the site advised that the results produced are accurate and equate to calculated values saving the site large amounts of money.

seepex Smart Conveying Technology extends pump life and reduces whole life costs.
T
wo seepex customers have recently improved the performance of their centrifuge feed pumps by using Smart Conveying Technology (SCT). This unique design of progressive cavity pump provides engineers with access to the rotor and stator for inspection and, if necessary, replacement without the need to dismantle pipelines. The stator is split axially into two halves, with 4 retaining segments holding them in a act as re-tensioning devices that, when tightened down, can help regain optimal A sewage treatment plant in Ireland converted their existing progressive cavity pumps to SCT with the aim of reducing the maintenance time compared to a conventional technology. Ragging was an issue on this site and the ability to clear blockages by removing the top half of the stator in situ was one of the deciding factors in the choice of SCT. Once in operation, however, the engineers noticed that the historical ragging issues experienced before pump conversion suggested that these pumps, running at about 20m3/ hr, were better at passing rags than a conventional design PC pump. Since conversion to SCT there have been fewer ragging problems and those that do occur can be cleared without dismantling any pipework. The customer is so happy with the reduction in downtime that they are looking to convert all suitable pumps to SCT design.
increase of 25%. This adjustment can be made again the next time that performance decreases and can be used to predict when eventual stator replacement is necessary. Smart Conveying Technology was developed to speed up rotor and stator maintenance times and improve the ability to remove blockages and contaminants. For seepex customers it is driving down pump whole life costs as re-tensioning the adjustable segments without the need for stator replacement.
In the North of England SCT pumps had been supplied as centrifuge feed pumps and performed with no maintenance interventions for the past two years. When the engineers reported a drop in performance (which would normally mean a new stator is needed) seepex established that the pump had not been adjusted by the site since installation. Latest Imperial College Wind Tunnel Upgrade Again it’s Dynamotive with drives from Control Techniques At the Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College London, when the 3ft x 3ft wind tunnel needed an upgrade, once again the College turned to wind tunnel specialists Dynamotive for the task. Dynamotive chose a drive from Control Techniques for the crucial job of controlling fan/wind speed. The project came about because of the failure of the DC motor and controller on the 3ft x 3ft low speed wind tunnel, which had a maximum wind speed of 150 ft/sec, during a time limited testing project being carried out by a PhD student. Because they had successfully worked with the Department of Aeronautics before, notably on asked to provide a fast turnaround AC solution - AC being preferred because of its reduced maintenance.
In remote control mode, the university closes the loop externally, taking into account differential pressure measurement feedback from the tunnel’s test section area. It is then possible to use an algorithm to calculate actual wind speed in metres/second. The researcher can then issue a corrected rotational speed set-point via the AC drive that is monitoring fan speed via the encoder, until the desired wind speed for the experiment is achieved. The HMI touch screen is programmed with a number of virtual pages, push-buttons and digital displays for RPM, drive and motor status and fan motor temperature. These are duplicated on the university’s own PC control, which allows remote access if required for diagnostics and service. A complete scheme comprising PLC controller, HMI, AC motor and a Control Techniques AC variable speed drive was installed within weeks, enabling the PhD student to collect all of his test data with time to spare. The wind tunnel is used for a wide range of tests from models of drones, or designs for reducing fractal turbulence (on an aircraft wing or a wind turbine blade for example) to attenuating noise produced by machinery. Recently, testing has produced designs to reduce the drag on heavy vehicles, with a view to fuel saving. The drive chosen was a 37 kW Unidrive SP model, communications with the Proface touch screen colour HMI that Dynamotive supplied and programmed. The 37 kW motor was a special order through Emerson a 1,024 ppr TTL optical encoder that feeds back to the drive for the closed loop Vector speed control operation and with a force-ventilation fan module mounted to the non drive end of the AC motor’s rotor. This gives the extremely accurate low speed operation required by many of the university’s experiments.

The Department of Aeronautics has a series of wind tunnels, covering speeds of just a few metres/sec to Mach 9. Their Honda low speed wind tunnel was upgraded by performance of today’s F1 cars. The 19 year old Control Techniques DC drives, still working well, were upgraded with more powerful Control Techniques Mentor II digital DC drives. The Honda wind tunnel, which is optimised for race car simulate the boundary layer effect. It has a six component force balance. The Donald Campbell low speed wind tunnel also has a rolling road and is equipped with an electromechanical three component force balance. There are four other general purpose wind tunnels including the newly refurbished 3ft x3ft low turbulence low speed wind tunnel. Dynamotive, formed in 1998, has developed and manufactured chassis dynamometers and facility control systems for numerous climatic, aeroacoustic and aerodynamic wind tunnel test facilities throughout the world. www.ControlTechniques.com

ue to the large variety of bus systems in factory automation, many system integrators are faced with the dilemma of choosing the “right system, a decision that can have farreaching consequences. For this reason, Panasonic developed a solution for transferring data between controllers and the sensors required. Up until now, communication between intelligent sensors and controllers has been realized via serial or parallel interfaces built into the sensors. At the same time, simple sensors capable of displaying the digital status of 1 or 0 only were developed for one In 2005 Panasonic, known for sensors at that time under the brand via optical interfaces between sensors. is one vital difference. The patented slot design on the Reli-a-Flex® maintains a constant pivot length which minimises stress variations. On the Reli-a-Flex® the pivot points travel back and forward without changing the centre piece angle, resulting in uniform stress levels and accurate angular rotation. Similar looking couplings on the market can actually have a slot pattern where the pivot points move in and out, and the centre piece angle varies. This causes stress variations and less uniform rotation. In tests performed on typical applications, the bi-directional error produced by a Reli-a-Flex® coupling used to drive a 3600 line encoder was four times smaller than that produced by a 4 beam spiral coupling. When used to drive a 6.35mm
l e a d leadscrew, the bi-directional error from the Reli-a-Flex® was 6 times less than that of the 4 beam spiral. Reli-a-Flex® also offers predictable performance, having been tested for 50,000,000 cycles at its rated torque and 80% maximum offset. FTIR gas analysis improves container safety
Introduction because of the large number of airborne chemicals that can be present. Research in Germany and the Netherlands found hazardous levels of gases and vapours in around 20% of all containers and this level of contamination is now accepted as commonplace. It is therefore necessary to examine containers before entry and this work is usually conducted with a wide variety of gas detection techniques in order to be able to assess, individually, all of the substances of greatest concern. Reaktie, has employed FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra Red) gas analysis to dramatically improve the speed and effectiveness with which containers are assessed, because this technology enables the simultaneous measurement of the 50 gases of most concern.
30
Chemical Hazards There are two potential sources of hazardous chemicals inside cargo containers; fumigants and chemicals that arise from the goods or packing materials. Fumigants are applied to goods to control pests and microorganisms. Cargoes most likely to have been fumigated include foodstuffs, leather goods, handicrafts, textiles, timber or cane furniture, luxury vehicles and cargo in timber cases or on timber pallets from Asia. According to the IMO’s international regulations, ‘Recommendations on the safe use of pesticides in ships’, fumigated containers and ship cargoes must be labelled are necessary and these records have to be forwarded to the Port Health Authorities without their explicitly asking for them. However, absence of marking cannot be taken

to mean fumigants are not present. Containers marked as having been ventilated after fumigation may also contain fumigant that was absorbed by the cargo and released during transit. There is also concern that fumigants may be retained in the goods and subsequently present a hazard to logistics providers, retail staff and consumers. Common
fumigants
include
Chloropicrine,
Methyl
Phospine. However, with over 20 years of experience testing gases in containers, Peter Broersma from Reakti says “While the fumigants are highly toxic, the number of containers exceeding occupational exposure limits (OEL) due to other chemicals is much greater and the number of ‘failed’ containers is likely to rise as more containers are tested, detection methods improve and new gases Containers often travel for extended periods and experience a wide range of temperatures. It is therefore not surprising that unsafe levels of gases should follows: accessories and shoes blister packaging etc. etc.) but also in used pallets and lashing materials

no gases are detected, it may be possible to only conduct random tests a few times per year. If it is necessary for Customs staff to enter a container, all containers must Gas detection Since there are a large number of gases that might be present inside a container, the traditional approach to monitoring has been either to employ a wide range of instruments or to use chemical stain tubes for the most common gases, or a combination of both. Chemical stain tubes provide a colorimetric assessment of an individual gas, typically with an accuracy of +/- 15%. Different tubes are available for many gases and results can be obtained between 5 seconds and 15 minutes depending on the test. Once a result has been obtained, the tube itself is hazardous waste and must be disposed of. Historically stain tubes have been popular because the cost per test is low. However, the number of tubes that have to be employed in order to demonstrate that a container is safe can be prohibitively expensive and timeconsuming to employ. One of the potential problems with electrochemical sensors is their inability to cope with high concentrations in a sample gas. This can result in poisoning of the cell, which would normally result in instrument failure. In contrast, similar high concentrations do not harm FTIR, and the instrument can recommence analysis after a few

In general terms, every incoming stream of products has to be checked for dangerous gases and if one of more gases are detected during the preliminary investigation, all of the
“FTIR has long been established as an accurate technology for the simultaneous measurement of gaseous emissions from industrial processes, so when the Finnish company Gasmet developed a portable version we were very eager to investigate its feasibility in container testing. “Following our initial tests, we worked with Gasmet to DX4030) that would measure the 50 compounds of greatest concern. As a result, we are now able to test for all of these gases in around 3 minutes, which dramatically lowers the time taken for container inspection and greatly increases the number of containers that can be examined every day. “We now use a portable FTIR for all of our container examination work and we have also supplied a number of these units to freight companies that wish to conduct their own testing. This technology is now in use at Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Vlissingen, Antwerp and Hamburg, and a company providing ship fumigation and degassing is using portable FTIR all over the world.”

CKF – MAKING AUTOMATION ACCESSIBLE In conjunction with the drive by the British Automation and Robot Association (BARA) on behalf of UK Government, CKF Systems Ltd has developed a low cost robotic packing system designed to increase the take-up of automation within British industry. The there has been a reluctance to embrace such technologies, providing them with a very reduce production costs through improved Designed around a standard robot cell with integrated product and case handling interfaces, the system will enable many more UK businesses to compete more effectively at home and internationally. The Gloucestershire company aims to counter the competitive advantage, through low labour rates, of businesses in Asia and Eastern Europe, by supporting BARA’s efforts to assist in the implementation of automated solutions for manufacturers of all sizes. Chris Buxton, CEO of the British Automation & Robot Association (a PPMA Group Company), stated: “It is to the credit of CKF that they have risen to the challenge. If the UK is to remain competitive on the global stage it is essential that companies adopt the latest technology establishing an automated facility can be prohibitive. that can help UK Manufacturers take that all important step into the world of robotics.”

Although the situation is starting to change, recent reports show that the UK still lags behind much of the world in robotic investment, with one report highlighting Germany employing a ratio of 127 robots 25 robots. “There is a limit to what can be achieved by the continue to be based on manual input,” explains Ian SME’s, typically with between 10 and 100 employees, consider automation a step too far. Over the past 12 months, CKF has been examining ways to address their concerns relating to the skill sets required and the perceived costs. Our ready-made, low cost robotic packing system doesn’t require highly skilled operators, it is easily maintained and utilises a relatively small periods than manual labour, with greater consistency and reduced wastage. A company can then make better use of resources, redeploying staff more productively whilst also reducing the likelihood of RSI and other health and safety concerns.” CKF is a well established specialist supplier of integrated solutions to the manufacturing industry, particularly in the area of food processing and packaging. It serves customers worldwide, including many global brands, utilising new technologies designed to transform virtually all aspects of production.

Arco Helps Keep Rocket Men Safe At Bloodhound Test A range of personal protective equipment supplied by Arco, the UK’s leading safety company, was put to the hybrid rocket system that will be used to power the BLOODHOUND supersonic car in its challenge for the world land speed record. The test took place at the Aerohub, Newquay in Cornwall and was streamed live over the web. The rocket burned for 10 seconds, generating 14,000lbs of thrust with sound levels at the rocket nozzle reaching 185dB, many times that of a Boeing 747 during takeoff. Bloodhound’s engineers are now reviewing the directory, to further develop the system, leading up to a planned challenge for the world land speed record on the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa in 2013. The team also used the event to practice the safety protocols and rocket handling procedures developed by R.I.S. and the Falcon Project Ltd that are necessary in order to maintain a 100% safety record. The BLOODHOUND team has partnered with Arco to provide expert advice and guidance on the correct PPE required to keep the engineers and designers safe during the build and testing process. Daniel Jubb, the 28-year old rocketeer who designed the BLOODHOUND rocket system and his colleagues were fully protected by Arco for this week’s test event. Working in this high-risk environment with a real hazard, R.I.S. & the Falcon Project Ltd’s risk assessment showed the engineers were required to be equipped with Chemsol Plus coveralls with chemical and Chemmaster protective headgear.

It’s the culmination of years of hard work and dedication by the team and we hope this goes some way to inspiring young people in the excitement of science and engineering. However, this type of experiment is high risk and we need to be sure that the BLOODHOUND teams are kept safe as we work towards our goal of beating the world land speed record. “We are relying on Arco to provide us with world class products that will protect us from any possible danger and its developing into a very effective partnership. Arco experts are on hand to advise and guide us on the correct protective equipment we need for each step of the journey, so that we can concentrate on running the Thomas Martin, Arco’s Joint Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to be working with the BLOODHOUND team to provide the personal protective equipment they need to keep safe in the lead up to the record challenge. We are also encouraging young people to become excited about engineering and science through the BLOODHOUND Ambassador programme. Over 40 Arco Ambassadors have been visiting schools across the UK and holding sessions developed to engage youngsters in a fun and exciting way. In fact the whole company has got behind this project and we are proud to say that we have provided the most number of Ambassadors to the programme.”

leading designer and manufacturer of engineering solutions for high pressure gas containment markets. The company commissioned Cutting Technologies to engrave name plates for offshore application. Jane Robinson, Director and co-founder at Cutting Technologies, explained the advantages of laser engraving over traditional printing: “Laser engraving leaves a completely indelible mark that can withstand the harshest of environments making it suitable for a huge range of engineering applications. It’s legible even when the text or design is very small and we can programme our lasers to engrave any characters, graphic or logo.”
“As we offer traditional laser cutting services too, our cut and engraved in one place, making the process delighted that more and more of our customers are seeing the value in laser engraving and incorporating it into their processes and designs.” Cutting Technologies opened in 2003 and now employs 30 people at its 18,000 sq ft premises in Barnsley. Formed by people who had been involved in laser processing, materials science and engineering for around 20 years, Cutting Technologies now has six lasers ranging from a small machine used for engraving metal parts to a 4.4kw machine with all the capability to cut incredible detail in metal. With over £2 million invested in technology, Cutting Technologies offers the best range of laser cutting and laser engraving services in the UK. Heason Technology supply custom motion system for CT scanner sample manipulator at the Imperial College QCCSRC Imaging Laboratory
H
eason Technology has completed the integration of a vertical positioning system for a CT scanner used for geological studies at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. The CT scanner is the centrepiece of the new Qatar Carbonates and Carbon Storage Research Centre (QCCSRC) - a $70 million, 10 year programme in conjunction with sponsors Qatar Petroleum, Shell and the Qatar Science and Technology Park to improve the understanding and development of the storage of CO2 in carbonate reservoirs to help mitigate climate change. The QCCSRC is a multi-scale imaging facility that evaluates the characteristics of various core rock samples combined with high temperature and high pressures in specially prepared capsules which can be up to 100kg in weight and 1000mm in length. The Universal Systems CT Scanner has a horizontal positioning table which is used to present smaller core rock samples into the machine. To accommodate the larger capsules, and remove the effects of load overhang for the precision measurement required, the CT scanner is rotated through 90 degrees and samples are introduced vertically. For this part of the machine Heason supplied a motorised heavy load hoist mechanism and a large fabricated steel gantry which houses a vertical two-stage positioning table. The complete solution included a motion and machine control system together with relevant safety relays/ interlocks for safe operation. The vertical positioning axis control interfaces seamlessly with the existing CT scanner controller via a LabView programmed GUI operator control interface located on the gantry platform as part of the electrical enclosure. The custom-built vertical positioning mechanics form a two-part telescopic vertical stage. A manually adjusted and lockable axis is used for approximate sample precision sample positioning the second axis comprises a servo driven Thomson M75 Movopart linear actuator

axes utilise linear guide bearing support for maximum stiffness and rigidity. Jon Howard, Heason Technology’s Managing Director comments, “From a design perspective this was a very challenging and varied application due to the number of elements within the system – and with the space constraints of the laboratory, which is located in one of the solution need to be extremely compact. The project allowed Heason Technology to demonstrate its diverse set of skills from designing the custom steel gantry framework and actuator to installing & programming Dr Sam Krevor, the principle scientist for the CT scanner project at QCCSRC, worked closely with Heason Technology engineers throughout the design and installation of the gantry system and was more than pleased with the service and support he received. “Heason Technology took the design brief and was able to competitively manage the complete gantry and high precision positioning system as a single source supplier. This was important as we only needed to deal with one company which made the process easier and faster for us. The design, manufacture and installation seamless integration with our CT scanner control system has been particularly effective.” Heason Technology worked in conjunction with a number of contractors involved in the build at the QCCSRC laboratory to ensure that all requirements were met and timescales adhered to. The Company works closely with a selected number of global distribution partners for motion control components and systems; and through its own in-house design and assembly service offers custom-built motion system solutions that help customers across manufacturing and research to excel in their own technologies, with the advanced positioning performance they require.

incorporated in combi and system boilers installed on new systems or in refurbishment projects where a new boiler is attached to an existing heating system. In the last implementation stage, the regulations starting from 2020 will apply to the replacement of integrated pumps in existing heat generators. Overall, these changes are thought to be likely to provide a reduction in EU-wide carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of about 11 million tonnes per year. Smoothing the way for our customers At BSS Industrial we have been working closely with our pump suppliers to ensure compliance with the new regulations and to make certain that our own customers are fully up to speed with the changes. We have been working not just to ensure compliance with the 2013 changes but also to ensure that the 2015 changes are front of mind for our customers in our key industrial markets of power, water and food and beverage production.
The EU has chosen to slowly tighten the regulations. From the 1st January all circulators sold have been compliant to the new regulations which means that the

seepex use Smart Conveying Technology to improve efficiency at Cog Moors
C
og Moors sewage treatment plant in South Wales has, in the past, asked seepex to solve pump problems on site. This has resulted in a digester recirculation impeller pump being replaced with a progressive cavity pump to resolve issues associated with gas produced in the digestate. The progressive Stator Technology, a new innovation at the time, and the rapid maintenance of this pump proved a hit with the plant engineers.
Training from seepex has reduced downtime by upskilling the operators so that they carry out routine maintenance tasks, remove ragging blockages and adjust the stator when wear occurs. To date over 20 pumps have been converted on this site and the extension of Smart Conveying Technology through reduced downtime, reduced maintenance intervals and reduced spares and maintenance costs.
seepex pumps are used on a variety of duties on site and following the success of smart stator they were asked to look at ways to reduce downtime of pumps caused by ragging blockages and high grit levels causing wear. In conjunction with the plant management seepex proposed a plan to upgrade all the existing pumps to Smart Conveying Technology, a proposal that was taken up with enthusiasm by Welsh Water who could see the advantages of the design. Smart Conveying Technology is a pump development which allows both the rotor and stator to be removed and replaced without the need to dismantle the pipework thus allowing blockage removal, pump inspection and planned maintenance to be carried out. The stator can also be adjusted to extend the stator life by up to 100%.

SMARTLEVEL™ sensors eliminate virtually all problems associated with standard capacitive level sensor technology. SMARTLEVEL sensors accurately sense correct levels of aqueous or high conductive liquids through glass or plastic walls up to 10 mm thick. Technology allows these sensors to automatically distinguish between non-metallic tank walls, possible interferences from foaming of material build-ups, and the true level in the tank. The sensors also re-adjust themselves when confronted with changing container compositions during checking procedures or changes in liquids during different production runs. These sensors are simple to install and require no teach-in. They The sensors are suitable for all water-based liquids and other highly conductive liquids.
