ROLEX UNVEILS INSTRUMENTS OF SPEED
R
olex, the leading luxury watchmaking brand, has revealed the two bespoke instruments it exclusively developed and manufactured for BLOODHOUND SSC, the supersonic car. True to its philosophy, Rolex has combined world class technology with exacting standards of precision and reliability to create these highly accurate instruments that will be installed in the cockpit of BLOODHOUND SSC as it aims to set a new World Land Speed Record of 1,000 miles per hour (1609.34
km/h) in South Africa in 2015/2016 and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Rolex joined the BLOODHOUND SSC Partner and thanks to its in-house engineering expertise, was in the best position to meet BLOODHOUND SSC driver Andy Green’s needs for two key cockpit instruments: an analogue speedometer and chronograph. These two vital instruments, with characteristic Rolex analogue dials, will
sit either side of Andy Green’s hands on the left and right of the dashboard. The speedometer and the chronograph will be essential and independent complements to the central electronic screens that will display data during BLOODHOUND SSC’s runs. Building on Rolex’s legendary reliability, these highly accurate instruments will provide a necessary visual reference and fail-safe back-up for some of the on-screen readouts during the two critical phases in the record bid:
We were looking to have independent and reliable devices to measure speed and time during the record attempt.
assisting precision braking from 1,000 mph on the 20-kilometre track and for timekeeping during the turnaround in-between the two mandatory record runs. BLOODHOUND SSC will be fully assembled by mid-2015 and will then start running in the UK and South Africa ahead of its World Land Speed Record attempt in 2016. Mr Arnaud Boetsch, Communication & Image Director of Rolex SA, said: “As the leading luxury watchmaking
brand, Rolex felt the nature and the global appeal of the partnership with BLOODHOUND SSC was of clear interest and in line with Rolex’s strategy to partner with projects that have strong symbolic value. The BLOODHOUND SSC project is one of the most highly technological global initiatives driven by a spirit of extraordinary human endeavour. The association marks Rolex’s support for projects that share a passion for performance and precision, founded on their pursuit of excellence in technology
and innovative engineering. Given Rolex’s history in the world of speed, which goes back to an association with Sir Malcolm Campbell during his World Land Speed Record successes in the 1930s, and BLOODHOUND SSC’s mission to inspire the next generation to embrace science and technology, the partnership with Andy Green, BLOODHOUND SSC driver, said: “BLOODHOUND SSC is a project
with strong symbolic values, not only designing and building the fastest car on earth but ultimately inspiring the next generation to take on careers in science and technology. We are delighted to have Rolex supporting this project both from a technical and inspirational point of view. We were looking to have independent and reliable devices to measure speed and time during the record attempt. These high-precision instruments will not only give me a visual reference of the speed, both in acceleration and most importantly on braking, but also help during the precise turnaround the car will have to go through in a limited time. Given their technical and engineering expertise, Rolex was the perfect partner to develop such unique and important instruments. rolex.com bloodhoundssc.com

Conformance testing plays a crucial part in ensuring that end-user expectations are met and ensures that all devices will be fully interoperable. There are various aspects to the testing, including assessment for performance, robustness, behaviour and interoperability. However, it is not a means to measure the performance of one item against another, rather a guarantee of suitability. standardised protocol implementations. However, one does not replace the need for the other. Conformance testing determines to what extent a single device or product complies with all the individual requirements of the network standard. Interoperability testing analyses the ability of all system devices to operate together and determines if the end-to-end functionality between communicating products meets the requirements of the relevant network standard. It does not always prove that individual devices conform to the detailed requirements of the protocol implementation. Thus the two approaches are complementary and not mutually exclusive. In fact, in complex technologies, the potential cost of getting things wrong, alongside a renewed interest in branding combined approach. Stand 7B280 TRaNSWaVE Converters - Where were you in 1984? If your memory needs a jog, 1984 was the year Virgin Atlantic took its commercial CD player. Band Aid was formed and Michael was on its way to selling 37 million copies. In January of that year two other great innovations hit the computer, Power Capacitors Limited launched the TRANSWAVE Converter ® to facilitate the use of 3-phase machinery where only a single-phase electricity supply is available. Operation of Woodworking and Engineering machine tools has accounted for over 60% of all converters sold in the period 1984-2014. Having had a presence at the biennial woodworking events at the NEC since 1988, TRANSWAVE Converters have chosen W14 to celebrate 30 years of converter production. Whilst being a fairly complex subject area, that includes product design, electrical conformity and associated regulation, it is generally agreed that it is quite a simple decision making process for the Types of Protection There are 3 types or classes or level of protection readily available, these are; “Class I”
Protection device for lightning protection equipotential bonding in accordance with DIN VDE 0 185-3 for direct or close lightning strikes. Max protection level according to standard 4 kV Installation in the main distribution/ at building entry
“Class 2”
Protection device for surge protection to DIN VDE 0 100-443 for surge voltages arriving through the supply network due to remote strikes or switching operations. Max protection level according to standard 2.5 kV Installation in the power distributor/sub-distributor
“Class 3”
Protection device designed for surge protection of portable devices at sockets and power supplies. Max protection level according to standard 1.5 kV Installation on the end consumer.
HVAC & Protection Just one lightning strike close by, or an electrical overload in the power supply and modern automation equipment can be destroyed. The economic consequences can be devastating: plant standstill, heavy losses on account of production downtime, data loss, repairs and system faults are all tied into the nightmare. to understand that as designers, installers and engineers the primary requirement must always be the earthling system. So we need to check and test the bonding system installed and verify that it is up to the job in hand. In the event of a lightning strike for instance the energy from the strike is normally split 50/50 between being carried into the earthling system and the buildings internal protection system; hence the requirement for equipotential bonding to make sure that this is the case. 01562 740666 Take a look at the OBO Bettermann channel on “You Tube” to view our “Power of 4” video, to get the full story of Lightning and Surge protection.

Using SKF’s latest measuring equipment
Optimised efficiency By implementing an integrated plant maintenance strategy, a company can manage its assets more effectively, ensuring that a plant runs smoothly with minimum downtime. What’s more, manufacturers can increase output without moving production to new facilities, expanding capability or speeding up production lines, says Phil Burge, Communication Manager for SKF.
a
t one time it was common practice for maintenance engineers simply to wait for equipment to fail before carrying out
now largely been replaced by more proactive maintenance programmes, incorporating an increasing choice
of diagnostic tools and software, which enable engineers to manage maintenance and repairs far more in place to ensure these programmes are implemented cohesively for managers and machine operators to achieve optimum productivity.
Fortunately, companies can now take advantage of a new generation of integrated approaches to maintenance that take into account the needs of the entire organisation. Once implemented, these strategies enable maintenance requirements to be analysed, assessed and managed As a result, uptime and productivity can be optimised with considerable improvements to a company’s bottom line. One example of this new approach is implementing this type of integrated plant maintenance strategy, a company ensuring that a plant runs smoothly with minimum downtime. This can same output to be produced for less cost, or increased output for the same cost. It also means that a need to increase output doesn’t necessarily mean a need to provide new facilities; can be achieved simply by unlocking the untapped potential of existing plant. Consider how devastating unplanned downtime can be to your production schedule and you can begin to see how preventing such incidents can make a major improvement to your levels of output. By taking the time to assess the causes of failure, you can begin to reduce downtime by improving your maintenance practices, and by building that knowledge into an organised action plan, you can lay the foundations of an on-going optimisation programme. A good way to reinforce best practice is to take a holistic approach and train your

Fortunately, companies can now take advantage of a new generation of integrated approaches to maintenance

second element of the AEO plan, entails the gathering and analysis of critical plant information through the Maintenance task. This information along with maintenance activities can be used to determine the corrective actions required for each asset. By taking into account the needs established by Maintenance Strategy
Beyond establishing a strong respect and regime for good maintenance, you then need to evaluate the overall performance of the plant and consider introducing an (AEO) programme. An improvement program maintenance strategy, with top-level business planning and system-wide analysis and performance across the board. There are four key elements in an AEO programme: Maintenance Strategy, Work and Work Execution. The Maintenance Strategy element assesses plant criticality and risk, and, linked to the business goals and objectives, establishes the most important issues and priorities. This enables
plan to be created that is closely tailored to the needs of the business and can be easily communicated throughout the organisation. Maintenance Strategy encourages the active participation of engineers in reliability-related activities, such as Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) or maintenance strategy review processes, while the dominant causes of failure in critical equipment are addressed by Streamlined Reliability Centred Maintenance (SRCM) processes. This process reviews the asset operating context, failure failure has on the business most appropriate migrating maintenance tasks for that equipment.
maintenance activity is planned in detail and scheduled during the third phase of the AEO plan: Work Control. During this stage, tasks are prioritised according to factors such as the timescales, manhours, data feedback, and competence levels related to those tasks. At this point, resources to be used in productive way possible. of the programme is Work Execution, in which all of the careful planning that has already taken place is put into action. However, it is also important to note that feedback is collected after Work Execution and fed back into the maintenance system to of the maintenance plan and a maximum return on
the optimised management of physical assets but this has now been developed into an ISO standard by contributing standards bodies throughout the world. The new standard, ISO 55001 Asset management – Requirements, was published in February. The creation of ISO 55001 has neatly positioned Asset Management alongside other established management systems, such as ISO 90001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management. A growing number of operators are recognising that optimisation strategies are a good investment and can increase the capacity of existing plant by eliminating the causes of downtime. When optimising operations, all areas need to be considered and, while some outgoings, such as material costs, may be beyond your control, the optimisation of plant through more always a strong option. The more holistic and proactive AEO programme delivers change for the better from a top-down operational level, creating a reliable plan for a workforce that is better informed and equipped to carry out that plan. www.skf.com Issue 10 PECM

Chillers Keep Production on Track By Carl Webb – Director of Andrews Chiller Hire

across so many of our manufacturing and processing industries. The British food and beverage industry is one of the most reliant on the supply of chilled water across virtually every aspect of its processing facility, 1. keeping machinery at the optimum processing temperature 2. reducing product drying times in confectionery manufacture 3. maintain constant temperatures in the fermentation process

5. providing chilled storage areas. Chiller failure could result in huge production slows or at worst stops and, unnoticed, it could result in an increase in rejected product, also there may be an impact on cold rooms with rise in temperature. Keeping plant operational and at the required temperature is the responsibility of on-site process or industrial chillers which are designed
for the most rugged environments and conditions, and although they are increased productivity and improved product quality. To protect this investment and crucial to a plant’s operation 24-hours-aday, 7 days-a-week it is essential for regular maintenance and check-up services to ensure that it is always in a However situations do arise when failure happens. transfer performance and this can be
maintained if operators regularly clean the unit’s condenser and evaporator tubes. While cleaning tubing in heat exchangers is laborious, doing so is a must in order to ensure high-
Chiller failure could result in huge financial losses and reputation
of concern is the condition of the water used within the chiller, it should be treated properly to avoid issues such as scaling, corroding and biological growth. Closed water system chillers need a single chemical treatment of water whilst open systems require continuous and regular chemical water treatment. Consequences of Chiller Failure Whether a chiller is taken out of service for routine maintenance or as a result of plant failure on-site maintenance engineers are under extreme pressure to return the inhouse chiller to normal duty. Chiller failure could simply be a stuck valve or a more serious incident where the plant delivering the constantly chilled water has developed a major problem that could remain unsolved for many days.
Air cooled chillers absorb the heat from process water, which is transferred to the surrounding air, the water is then recirculated back into process. As a means of providing temporary chilling this design minimises the installation work involved allowing the chiller to become operational more quickly. from most hire companies, hire companies like them because they are easy to service which means customers are guaranteed to receive fully tested and maintained chillers which can be installed more quickly than water cooled machines, enabling the production process to return to normality. The Operation
Whilst major repairs take place the prime alternative is chiller hire, unquestionably the right decision answer, and for maintenance engineers and production managers they will turn to specialist hire companies such as Andrews Chiller Hire with a nationwide network of hire depots and an experienced engineering team could mean your business is just hours away from being back into production. Engineers from competent hire companies need to carry out a site survey, to identify the very best position to site a skid-mounted chiller, understand the cooling requirements and specify a chiller capacity that must also take into account ‘heat gains’ and ‘cooling losses’ from lengthy pipe runs. Air Cooled Chillers Air cooled chillers are the favoured HIRE unit both by the hire companies and the customer since they require less maintenance and more importantly they eliminate the need for a cooling tower.
process water enters a chiller barrel (also known as the chiller evaporator) which also receives the systems cool low pressure mixture of liquid and vapour refrigerant, this absorbs the heat from the process liquid. This transfer of heat boils the liquid refrigerant in the chillers evaporator and the super-heated vapour is pulled into the chiller’s compressor. This compresses the refrigerant to a high temperature and pressure, high enough to allow the chillers condenser (a heat exchanger) to reject heat from the chillers refrigerant to the atmosphere, axial fans (propeller type) heat transfer surface (heat exchanger). chiller relies on expelling heat into the atmosphere correct position of the hired chiller is paramount. For any competent chiller hire company correct placement of the chiller should be second nature. Many leading hire organisations will claim to provide 24/7, 365 day access are just a few that can actually deliver
on this promise and have a large nationwide network of depots that can respond promptly as in an emergency situation the customer faces the possibility of losing many thousands of pounds through machine downtime or waste product. Choosing the right hire company can certainly pay dividends – quicker response to cooling problems, competent engineers, faster delivery – and above all temporary installation of the right chiller to enable the production process to re-start.

Fluid Handling seepex Smart Conveying Technology reduces opex at United Utilities Shell Green site seepex has supplied eight Conveying Technology to United Utilities as part of continuous cost saving initiatives. The Shell Green sludge processing site takes sludge from a wide catchment area for processing at a centralized facility where it is dewatered before being used to generate energy. United Utilities asked seepex to look at the pump systems feeding the dewatering centrifuges to reduce operating costs. After a full diagnostic check of the system by seepex and UU engineers, seepex proposed a trial is an innovation in progressive cavity pump design that increases uptime During the trial stator life was extended compared to the existing pumps by adjustment of the retaining segments which hold the 2 part stator in place. The SCT pump ran for 30% longer before the stator was replaced and this, combined with lower stator costs for this design, has generated 70% savings in spares parts costs alone. In addition to increased operating uptime, maintenance downtime is reduced by 85% as rotors and stators can be changed without dismantling pipework. Furthermore this design means that in future SCT pumps with readjusting capability can be installed to reduce both capital and operating costs. The trial was so successful that 8 centrifuge feed pumps have now been replaced by seepex SCT pumps with projected savings on operating costs in the region of £50,000 per year.

Rise of a New Sensing Technology: Leddar™ W
hen LeddarTech developed its patented Leddar™ (Light-Emitting Diode Detection and Ranging) technology a few years ago, the primary goal was to create an alternative to expensive, complex, or fragile sensing solutions. It had versatile and economical. The result was an advanced sensing and distance measurement technology that provides continuous, rapid and accurate detection and ranging, covering narrow and wide beams, without any moving parts. One of the main innovations behind Leddar™ is that it uses infrared LEDs in its timedetection of a wide range of objects, under various/harsh conditions, making the technology suitable for a myriad of applications. The true uniqueness of Leddar™ lies in the algorithm, the way the light is pulsed, and the oversampling and accumulation of the signal, which provides excellent accuracy and range with a very low-power device. As LEDs are inherently low-power and the light is pulsed, only a tiny fraction of the LEDs’ illumination time is used (approximately 0.5%). This keeps power consumption very low
and ensures a very long lifetime — the operating time of a LED is about 10 years at full illumination, so the expectancy of this more than that. These properties are particularly important for remote installed applications as the maintenance is minimal. When compared to competing detection technologies, such as laser scanners, radar, video, thermal imaging, ultrasonic and passive infrared, Leddar™ excels in the widest range of criteria (detection range, ruggedness, speed, accuracy, performance for the price. Key characteristics of Leddar™ are undoubtedly its adaptability and ease of integration. The technology comes in module form (complete with software development kit) or in turn, can be adapted to suit the options, with or without enclosure, brand owners, OEMs and integrators in
value-added sensing capabilities into their innovations or processes, and productivity. Over the last few years, Leddar™ technology has been successfully deployed worldwide in numerous industries such as transport, automotive (ADAS), industrial automation, security and surveillance, smart lighting, smart parking, entertainment, consumer electronics and home appliances, smart buildings, defence/military/aerospace/aeronautic, energy and environment, etc. To learn more, visit www.leddartech.com

It has allowed the Leeds-based company to change powder curing from a continuous to a batch operation; it can now respond more quickly to customer requirements for corrosion-resistant screws and fasteners. In addition, the new pyrometer-controlled oven delivers a more consistent curing installation and requires less space. To solve both of these problems, SFS Intec contacted Heraeus, who designed, manufactured and installed a carbon infra-red medium wave curing system. This is a three-zone oven with seven 4kW medium wave infra-red emitters in each zone. Medium wave radiation is readily absorbed by powder coatings and

Test clip from Multi-Contact makes tapping busbars quick and safe
Video pyrometers For hard-to-reach and hot processes
Tapping busbars can be carried out quickly
The video pyrometers optris CSvideo 2M, CTvideo 1M/2M and CTvideo 3M are digital infrared thermometers with video sighting. They allow an easy sensor alignment through a PC or tablet. Thus, the infrared thermometers with video sighting are ideally suitable for temperature measurements of hard-to-reach processes and applications, where the measuring object is too hot for the laser sighting to be visible.
Multi-Contact. The Grip-FMA has a Multilam in each jaw, ensuring low contact resistance even on busbars that are lacquered on one side. The jaws open to a maximum of 12mm and are clamped into position using the pressure grip handle. A typical use is for synchronising standby power units. The Grip-FMA is rated at 1,000V, CAT IV and 32 A and accepts a 4mm safety lead. To maintain the CAT IV rating, appropriately rated leads should be used. Multilam is a proprietary contact system from Multi-Contact that uses torsion spring contact elements to produce multiple contact points and ensure low contact resistance and high reliability.
The new infrared thermometers enable for an exact spot size marking from 0.5 mm through simultaneous video sighting and double laser sighting and measure temperatures precisely from 50°C to 3000°C. Response times from 1 ms allow an integration into fast processes. By measuring in the short wave length range of 1.0 µm, 1.6 µm or 2.3 µm, measurement errors on surfaces with low or unknown emissivity can be reduced.
