Southern Manufacturing & Electronics continues its progress to international status With more international representation this time following a surge in stand bookings by overseas firms, Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2024 opens from 6th to 8th February at the Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre. It has helped to ensure the show is a sell-out again, even though extra space was allocated months ago to accommodate the larger number of stands. It is the most comprehensive annual industrial exhibition in the UK and a major pan-European showcase for new technology. Inaugurated in 1997 as a small, regional event, it moved to the present location in Hampshire in 2008 has been growing year-onyear into an expo of international significance, now attracting visitors and exhibitors from all over the world. It is an event important enough to attract big-name manufacturers
sectors, the show is an ideal venue for addressing multiple purchasing requirements efficiently, especially in times when supply chains are under pressure as they are today.

Southern operates a policy of open access, discouraging larger firms from dominating the space. The resulting mixture of companies creates a vibrant atmosphere that is unlike that of other shows. Testament to this, and to the effectiveness of the event as a business forum, is the very high rate of return bookings, a large percentage of participants having supported the exhibition since the very beginning. The stands are split approximately equally between companies operating in the mechanical engineering and electronics sectors. Although the technologies and industries covered are different, there are no barriers between the various areas, allowing people to move freely between the stands and perhaps discover products and services they were not expecting. Technology Trails grouping firms with expertise in particular areas help to speed visitors’ progress around the aisles. It is a must-attend event for anyone involved in the design, production, procurement or management. With so many companies operating at the forefront of technology and innovating across a multitude of

It is the place to source mechanical, electrical, electronic, electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components and assemblies, surface mount technology, PCB manufacturing and box build services, controls, cables, cabinet assembly, mechatronics, plastic injection and rubber mouldings, connectors, sensors, drives, encoders, fasteners, pressings, wireforms, springs, gaskets, and more. Additive manufacturing continues its progress towards becoming a mainstream production technique and there will be many exponents bringing visitors up to date with the latest techniques. Other diverse offerings will include supply of materials including composites, business and manufacturing software, production and planning aids, oil and coolant supply, workshop equipment, dust and fume extraction, humidity control, workplace storage systems, bespoke case and foam manufacture, plastic packaging, injection moulding, hand tools, adhesives, industrial
flooring, waste removal and recycling, training, freight services and financial consultancy. A wide range of companies supplying subcontract manufacturing services will also be present. Automation in mechanical engineering and electronics will be prevalent, driven by a skills shortage in Britain and across Europe. Manufacturing industry is also facing a battle to recover from difficulties caused by Brexit, soaring energy costs and higher taxation. Not surprisingly, therefore, economical manufacturing will be a theme throughout the show. There will be an accent on explaining the benefits of Industry 4.0 and end-to-end digitalisation, and on autonomous handling such as robot and cobot (collaborative robot) machine tending. There will be improved technologies in green energy and power-saving machinery, plus renewed interest in the reshoring of production,
and environmental issues facing manufacturers today.
It is an event important enough to attract bigname manufacturers and suppliers, but it is also very accessible to the rich ecosystem of engineering SMEs and smaller vendors. Alongside the exhibition and demonstration areas, over the three days there will be a programme of free technical seminars, one supporting the mechanical side of the show and the other electronics. They will give visitors and exhibitors alike valuable learning opportunities, with a particular focus on the technical, managerial

Restored bearings yield economic and environmental benefits for manufacturers Bearing remanufacturing is gaining traction in heavy-duty industrial applications as a practical and sustainable alternative to replacing worn bearings. The process involves rebuilding a used bearing to meet or exceed the original manufactured product’s specifications. Here Chris Johnson, managing director at bearing relubrication specialist SMB Bearings, explores how the remanufacturing process can yield economic and environmental benefits. Bearing remanufacturing is the process of restoring used or wornout bearings to their original or improved operating condition. As an end-of-life management solution it is gaining popularity, and for good reason. Not only do remanufactured bearings offer a cost-effective solution for businesses, but they also provide an environmentally-friendly alternative to buying new bearings. According to SKF, it reduces the amount of raw material needed by around 62 per cent. It also creates 70 per cent less waste. This is because making a new bearing from scratch involves more than 100 separate processes. In remanufacturing, this is cut to under ten.
How does it work? Remanufactured bearings can use a combination of reused, repaired, and new parts, and bearings with more than 30 per cent of their remaining service life can be remanufactured. A thorough inspection is conducted to determine the appropriate refurbishment process. The

The energy requirement for remanufacturing is also as low as 90 per cent when compared to the production of a new bearing, which minimises the need for new raw materials and offers quicker manufacturing turnaround times. process involves several steps, including inspection, reclassification, refurbishment, and remanufacturing. The first step is to inspect the used bearing thoroughly, which involves comparing it with the initial specification drawing. The bearing is then disassembled, cleaned,
and degreased. Following a visual inspection, microscopic inspection, dimensional inspection and testing will occur. This will culminate in a detailed analysis report that details recommendations for appropriate refurbishment and remanufacturing processes. The next step is reclassification services, which encompass minor repair, demagnetisation, dynamic testing, relubrication, reassembly, and packaging for the bearing’s return to the industry. If further intervention is needed, then refurbishment might be necessary. This step will include the previous actions in addition to one or more of the following: replacing rolling elements or components like seals and snap rings, remanufacturing the bearing’s cage, plating mounting surfaces or polishing the bearing’s raceways. The final stage of remanufacturing involves altering the component
by grinding, installing a new ring and modifying it. At this point, engineers have the option to enhance the performance or characteristics of the initial bearing, which can lead to increased operational efficiency and reduced maintenance requirements in the future. Upgrades may include the addition of features such as black oxidation, or the incorporation of extra sensor functions for condition monitoring.

Economic benefits Replacing a worn bearing can be costly and, in many cases, remanufacturing can provide significant cost savings. For example, if a large industrial bearing in a pumping system fails unexpectedly before the end of its service life, remanufacturing could increase the life cycle of the bearing by more than 50 per cent, and provide up to 60 per cent savings compared to the cost of a new bearing.
Additionally, relubrication services, like those offered by the bearing relubrication specialist SMB Bearings, can extend a bearing’s service life and improve operational performance at an affordable price point. Indeed, relubrication is crucial if you intend to repurpose old-yet-healthy bearings for a different application. By doing so, businesses can save money as opposed to repeatedly purchasing new bearings, which makes it a smart and efficient form of recycling.
Smaller bearings, like miniature bearings, may not be cost-effective to remanufacture. This is due to the cost of disassembling, cleaning, inspecting, and reassembling the bearing, which may be higher than the cost of simply replacing the bearing with a new one. Additionally, the amount of wear and damage that can be repaired on small bearings may be limited,

Large bearings – such as spherical roller bearings, deep groove ball bearings, tapered roller bearings, caster bearings and slewing bearings – are good candidates for remanufacturing.
Environmental considerations Aside from the economic benefits, bearing remanufacturing also has a positive impact on the environment. The process reduces the unwanted use of natural resources and the disposal of components when they become damaged or fail. Remanufacturing feeds into the circular economy model by recovering and regenerating products and materials, unlike the traditional make-use-dispose industrial model. The energy requirement for remanufacturing is also as low as 90 per cent when compared to the production of a new bearing, which minimises the need for new raw materials and offers quicker manufacturing turnaround times. Additionally, remanufacturing can help reduce the carbon footprint associated with producing new bearings. Finally, remanufacturing can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation, as remanufactured bearings can often be sourced locally rather than being shipped from far-off locations. After the remanufacturing process has been carried out, it’s crucial to avoid the recurrence of the damage that affected the bearing before it was remanufactured. Condition monitoring techniques, including vibration analysis, can be implemented to monitor the continual status of the components. It’s clear that remanufactured bearings offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable alternative to buying new bearings. As more businesses recognise these benefits, remanufactured bearings have the potential to become the norm in industries that rely heavily on bearings. HOW TO FASTEN CHASSIS COMPONENTS AND SUBASSEMBLIES Introducing the Huck® BobTail® Huck BobTail® LockBolts® are used worldwide in a wide variety of industries by manufacturers looking to reduce the maintenance of bolted joints, avoid the hazards and the risks associated with welding, and just to clean up, as well as speed up their assembly processes. Often the most vulnerable point on a design is where there is an interface or join between components. BobTail® fasteners can be effectively used with virtually any plated metals without damaging the plated / finished surface, also dissimilar metals with dissimilar coefficients of thermal expansion present no problems. Varying material thicknesses are readily accommodated.
BobTail® Huck® fasteners are DiBt approved. This approval means BobTail® Lockbolts® can be used in areas regulated by the building authorities as a replacement for non-preloaded structural bolting assemblies (acc. to EN 15048) or high-strength structural bolting assemblies for preloading (acc. to EN 14399). The values published can also be used in many other applications, including rail, commercial vehicles, lattice towers or wind turbines. LockBolts® compare with nuts and bolts Lockbolts® have a significantly higher fatigue strength than threaded fasteners, they can be used in areas where access to the joint from both sides is guaranteed. Due to their high static loadbearing capacity under shear and tensile loads and their outstanding fatigue strength, they represent an excellent alternative to bolted or welded connections, especially when high demands are placed on safety over the entire products service life. Huck® fasteners are precision engineered to deliver unmatched installation speed, fatigue life and vibration resistance, they have been tested and proven on commercial, agricultural and defence vehicles around the world for many years. Known for their industry-leading shear and tensile strength, once installed, BobTail® fasteners deliver consistent clamp. Each BobTail® performs identically in terms of strength and clamping force. Other mechanical fasteners
such as nuts and bolts must be installed using torque, or rotational force which varies with friction. BobTail® also consist of two parts – a pin and a collar, but uses an entirely different installation method to nuts and bolts. BobTail® fasteners installation process As with nuts and bolts, BobTail® fasteners can be pre-assembled by hand (at this stage no tools are required); they have a pre-fit-up function in the form of helical grooves enabling the structure to be ‘lightly’ assembled, in chassis production this often helps with the ‘line-up’ of the cross bearers. Once the engineer is satisfied with the alignment then the tool is applied and the fasteners can be permanently installed. The locking groove on the BobTail® pin is an essential feature and differs from conventional bolts / set screws as it has a flatter groove geometry. This results in a larger stress cross-section with the same nominal diameter and a lower notch sharpness. As a result, LockBolts® have a significantly higher fatigue strength than threaded fasteners.

As mentioned, BobTail® fasteners are a two-part fastener, they consist of a headed pin and a collar. The BobTail® pin is made with a series of pulling grooves at its tail end. The installation tool (driven by pneumatic, hydraulic or battery power) grips onto these grooves, pulls the work together, then the conical shaped cavity of the nose assembly is forced down the collar which is axially pressed firmly into the grooves of the pin by the processing tool. At this stage of the installation the tool has progressively cold formed (swaged) the collar into the grooves of the harder pin. The squeezing action reduces the diameter of the collar, increasing its length. This stretching of the pin and collar generates the clamp force over the joint. The pin and swaged collar combine to form the installed fastener providing a permanent and completely vibration resistant joint.

Also available is a colour changing collar which shows a distinct visual difference between an installed or an uninstalled fastener.

It could be argued that the cost of the BobTail® fastener and installation tools are more than those of a nut and bolt, but when considered, the high fatigue strength of BobTail® fasteners means that fewer are needed, joint integrity is not compromised, and overheads are quickly saved in other areas. Post-installation Huck® BobTail® only requires a quick visual inspection (no torque, therefore no re-torque is required), saving even more time and expense. In addition, Huck® BobTail® fasteners have been designed to be tamper-proof for an additional measure of security. One of the UK’s leading suppliers of safety-critical steel components has capped a year of growth, acquisition, and investment by being named as the ‘Best of British Casting’ at the recent UK Cast Metals Industry Awards. Sheffield-headquartered William Cook Holdings beat off the challenge of the other finalists to secure the ‘Company of the Year’ title, impressing judges with landmark rail contract wins, support for the war effort in Ukraine and a £5m investment programme that has reinforced its position in the nuclear power supply chain. The group also stepped in to protect vital foundry skills when it saved 75 jobs by acquiring HI Quality Steel Castings of Chesterfield out of administration. Organised by the Cast Metals Federation (CMF), there were also major accolades for Tamworth-based Foseco (Innovation) and Sylatech who claimed the Component of the Year Award. The latter was for the work the Kirkbymoorside-based company did in producing a prosthetic aluminium thumb for use by children who have lost a hand due to injury, congenital conditions or for other medical reasons.

Audi begins production of electric motors for the PPE in Győr • Newly developed electric drive systems used for the first time in the Audi Q6 e-tron series • Audi CEO Gernot Döllner: “Győr is predestined for the production of these highly compact and efficient electric motors for the PPE” • Around 700 employees work in three shifts to produce up to 2,000 electric motors a day for the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) A new chapter in drive production at Audi is beginning in the Hungarian city of Győr, as the company commences manufacture of electric motors for the Premium Platform Electric (PPE). The newly developed electric motors will be used for the first time in the Audi Q6 e-tron series. Production of the first fully electric Audi model is scheduled to start at the Ingolstadt headquarters at the end of the year with the PPE-based model. Among other provisions, the company has set up its own battery assembly facility in Ingolstadt in preparation for this step. In Győr, Hungary, Audi Hungaria produces stators and transmission components in a completely new 15,000-squaremeter production area, where the axles for the PPE are also assembled. Product testing also takes place in Győr. “Győr is predestined for the production of these highly compact and efficient electric motors for the PPE,” says Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. “The highly qualified team at the site has already built over 400,000 electric drive systems since 2018, which is invaluable experience.” In addition to the electric motors for the PPE that power the Audi Q6 e-tron series, Győr also builds

the drive system for the Audi Q8 e-tron. Furthermore, an additional production area is being set up for electric motors that will be used in vehicles based on the MEBeco (modular electric drive toolkit) in the Volkswagen Group. To produce the electric motors for the PPE, the brand with the four rings has installed three new lines. The production line for stators has 28 work steps, the one for transmission components has 15. One axle alone requires 190 individual steps to assemble. Around 700 employees are involved in production. In terms of series production, the employees in Győr work in three shifts to build
up to 2,000 electric motors per day for the PPE. The site supplies both Audi and Porsche. Compared to the previous electric motor assembly facility, the vertical range of production has been increased once again. “The start of production in Győr marks an important milestone in the rampup of production of the Audi Q6 e-tron,” says Audi Board Member for Production and Logistics Gerd Walker. “I know from personal experience how passionately the team at Audi Hungaria works and how systematically it advances the further electrification of the world’s largest engine plant. With its
enormous expertise in drive systems and net carbon neutral production, the Győr site is an indispensable part of Audi’s global production network,” adds Walker, who was Managing Director for vehicle production at Audi Hungaria from 2012 to 2016. Audi Production is using the transition to e-mobility to comprehensively transform its global production network and has a clear vision for the Manufacturing of the future with the 360factory. As part of this holistic, sustainable approach, Audi is modernizing, digitalizing, and transforming its existing plants. Production in Győr has been net carbon neutral since 2020; the site has Europe’s largest roof-mounted photovoltaic system and is Hungary’s biggest industrial geothermal energy consumer. To make transporting the electric motors for the PPE from Győr to Ingolstadt net carbon neutral, Audi relies on the transport and logistics company DB Cargo.

Terramar set to take place there, Győr will further increase synergies in the global production network. Technical Development provides product development for Audi and the Volkswagen Group. In addition to production, the company draws on the extensive know-how of its employees to provide a wide range of services to other Group brands. In order to expand the exclusive series production of body components for the Progressive brand group with Audi, Lamborghini, and Bentley, Audi Hungaria expanded its toolmaking facility just last year. Complex body components such as rear and front hatches, doors, fenders, roofs, and side panel frames are made here – mainly from aluminum. Audi Hungaria has invested around twelve billion euros since its foundation. This makes the site one of the largest investors in Hungarian industry. Audi Hungaria currently employs approximately 12,000 people.

According to Climate.gov, there has been an increase of one degree Celsius in global average surface temperature since the pre-industrial era (1880-1900). Although this increase seems minimal, the consequences are substantial due to a significant increase in accumulated heat. This results in seasonal temperature extremes, reduced snow and ice coverage and intensifying rainfall. Sustainability is now a key factor in the adoption of automation, with a need for enhanced energy efficiency and better recycling systems. An increase in the demand for automation that is energy efficient, capable of reducing waste and optimised for eco-friendly production processes is expected.

Renishaw switches to 100 per cent renewable electricity for UK operations To further its commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2050, global engineering technologies company, Renishaw, has partnered with the world’s first green energy company, Ecotricity, which is a member of the Green Britain Group. Renishaw has signed a two-year contract with the provider, which will now supply its main UK sites with 100 per cent renewable electricity. As part of its ambitious climate transition plan, Renishaw aims to reduce emissions relating to its business activities and purchased energy — Scopes 1 and 2 — to Net Zero by 2028. Its partnership with Ecotricity is the latest move towards exclusively using green energy across the globe, with its sites in India, Japan, Mexico and the USA among those already running on 100 per cent renewable electricity. “So far, we’ve reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 21 per cent compared to last financial year and our Net Zero commitments promise that we will go even further,” said Ben Goodare, Head of Sustainability at Renishaw. “We self-generate 11 per cent of our electricity consumption and most of the electricity we buy is certified renewable — by the end of 2024, 100 per cent of what we purchase globally will meet our sustainability requirements.” Goodare continued, “We try to work with local suppliers where possible to support our wider sustainability goals and Ecotricity is based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, which is

Key design considerations for electrical connector solutions used in the harsh environments often found in the military sector In the world of electrical connectors, there is an abundance of options to choose from, which can make identifying the right choice a difficult task. This is made more difficult in mission-critical industries with specific operational challenges, such as the military sector. Here Sean Fitall, senior product manager at military electrical connector specialist PEI-Genesis, discusses the key considerations for a new generation of electrical connectors that deliver reliable performance in military applications. Electrical connectors used in military applications, such as manned ground vehicles and unmanned autonomous guided vehicles, must often tolerate extreme and harsh conditions. Typically, these include extreme temperatures both hot and cold, rapid temperature and humidity changes, persistent impact and vibration and signal interference. Furthermore, it is common for military connectors to be in services for two to three decades, amplifying any potential damage or loss of performance over time. This means that connectors intended for use in military applications must be designed with performance and reliability in mind to ensure operational success. Therefore, to rise to the challenge, military connectors must come equipped with key features such as high durability, easy mating and unmating, a high number of mating cycles to ensure long lifespans, superior shielding performance and high levels of ingress protection.

D38999 connectors Traditionally, D38999 connectors have been the first choice for use in military applications. First developed in the 1970s and now on its fourth generation design, this is a military-specific connector designed to ensure reliable performance. D38999 connectors are made up of a hard outer shell, a polychloroprene rubber insert with cavities to house the contacts and a backshell is required on the outer housing of every plug to provide additional shielding and durability. D38999 connectors can be supplied in aluminium, stainless steel, marine bronze or composite materials and then plated in either olive drab
cadmium, green zinc cobalt, nickel or black zinc nickel, depending on customer requirements. Composite options are more popular because they are lightweight and offer high performance levels in harsh environments. They are also all REACH and RoHS compliant (apart from the Olive Drab plating) and all QPL qualified for use in military applications. Now, electrical connector manufacturers have built on the features that have made the D38999 so reliable in military applications for decades with the introduction of next-generation Rhino 38999 connectors.

E-Lit Solution opens up new possibilities in research, development and quality assurance InfraTec E-LIT – Lock-In Thermography for Electronics is an automated testing solution system (as part of NDT techniques) which allows non-contact (electrical) failure analysis of semiconductor material during the manufacturing process. Inhomogeneous temperature distribution, local power loss, leakage currents, resistive vias, cold joints, latch-up effects and soldering issues can be measured with Lockin Thermography. This is achieved by using the shortest measurement times combined with a highperformance thermographic camera and a specialised lock-in procedure. Smallest defects at electronic components like point and line shunts, issues from overheating, internal (ohmic) shorts, oxide defects, transistor and diode failures on a PCB surface, in integrated circuits (IC´s), LED modules and battery cells can be detected and displayed in x and y positions. Additionally, it is possible to analyse stacked-die packages or multi-chip modules in z-direction with merely changing the lock-in frequency.

Borger’s pumps manage tricky effluent at new carpet recycling facilities At a recycling company that transforms end-of-life waste carpet into products for a wide range of industries, Borger’s BLUEline rotary lobe pumps are playing an important part in conveying the hard-to-handle wastewater to a centrifuge. Installed at two locations, Borger’s self-priming BLUEline Rotary Lobe Pumps manage the effluent’s viscous and abrasive materials with ease for the process that sees old carpets deconstructed, whilst recapturing polypropylene and calcium carbonate. The facility’s capability in resourcerecapture takes carpet waste that was previously destined for shredding, burning and landfill. ANGOLA CASE STUDY NORTH RIDGE PUMPS
Diesel Fuel Skid enables Tanker Unloading in under 30 minutes the products are certified to ‘UK Designated Standards’ by a UK government-appointed body for the ‘EPS Regulations’ (Equipment and Protective Systems).
Our latest case study focuses on a project we recently carried out for a power station in Angola in central Africa. They were looking to improve tanker unloading at the site, and wanted a diesel fuel skid to help achieve an unloading rate of 1800L a minute, or US 480 gallons a minute.
Therefore when chemicals or fuels are pumped, the equipment specified needs to be correctly rated for the location for use and if it is to be located in an ATEX Zoned area, it must be able to contain any explosion, or not ignite any fluids or gases that may be present in that area.
What is a diesel fuel unloading skid? Bulk deliveries of fuels, chemicals and liquid food products are usually transported by either road or rail. These are the most cost-effective and seamless ways to bulk deliver essential chemicals needed as part of a process or as raw materials for production. When tankers arrive on site or at a main depot for filling or refuelling there needs to be an efficient way to load and unload these liquids in bulk – quickly, safely and with little wastage ensuring containers delivering raw materials are stripped of all fluid. This is where loading or unloading pumps come in. When these pumps are mounted on a common baseplate along with other accessories such as flowmeters, pressure transducers or switches and a control panel, the whole unit is called a pump skid.
• Viscosity handling
Key factors when specifying a diesel unloading pump skid A number of different technologies can be used to unload diesel from road tankers. There are critical requirements to consider and these will determine which type of pump technology is best for each particular application.
• Self priming This is important if the unit is to be located above the tanker, and helps to ensure that the tanker’s contents are fully stripped.
• UKCA ‘EX’ and ATEX rated The client in Angola wanted a new diesel unloading pump skid with an unloading rate of 1800L every minute, or US 480 gallons a minute. A diesel tanker can hold anywhere between 20,000 to 44,000 litres of liquid, or 5,500 to 11,600 gallons meaning our new diesel fuel skid would have to be able to empty a tanker in a timeframe of 11 to 25 minutes.

The ATEX rating system is a set of safety regulations established by the European Union. They ensure the safe use of equipment in areas where there’s a risk of explosion due to the presence of flammable gases, vapours, dusts or powders. The UKCA ‘EX’ Certification is essentially the same as ATEX with the major difference that
A fluid’s viscosity is affected by increases and decreases in temperature. Viscosity decreases with an increase in temperature, and the more viscous the fluid, the more sensitive it is to the temperature change. More viscous fluids will be more difficult to handle, reducing both flow and pressure. This makes it crucial that any pump specified can easily handle the liquid’s viscosity range without any loss of performance in both summer and winter or should changes occur to the fluids blend.
• Centrifugal pump or positive displacement pump There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of technology. Centrifugal pumps have a lower initial investment cost and can produce high flows at a specified discharge pressure. Their power performance curves are generally a half-moon shape, with the highest pressure producing the lowest flow, and the highest flow giving the lowest pressure. However, performance will reduce if pressure loss calculations are
incorrect. In addition, centrifugal pumps do not normally selfprime unless this type of design is specified early on in the process. If the fluid contains entrained gas, or has a low boiling point – common in some refrigerants or chemicals, a side channel pump which has a low NPSH may be the most effective way of tanker emptying. In contrast, a positive displacement pump has a higher initial cost, but performance is guaranteed and unaffected by changes in viscosity, temperature or discharge losses. A positive displacement pump performance curve is actually a straight line meaning when viscosity increases so does performance. Unlike a centrifugal pump, positive displacement pump flow is proportional to RPM and doesn’t reduce with pressure.
• System and pump protection To ensure longevity and reliability, serious consideration needs to be given to system and pump protection. Steps that can be taken include incorporating antivibration mounts to prevent shock starts and stops from the units transferring to the connecting pipework. In addition, integrated relief valves can be fitted to the pump for pump protection, along with
the pump and any connected pipework, obtaining feedback from inputs or sensors and following a predetermined course of action.
To ensure longevity and reliability, serious consideration needs to be given to system and pump protection. pressure transducers or switches to stop pumps operating if discharge pressures exceed set limits.
Our diesel fuel unloading pump bespoke features At North Ridge Pumps, we’re not tied to just one pump technology. Using our experience, we can specify the best pump for any application based on the lowest lifetime cost. We use our expertise to offer a bespoke solution - not something straight off the shelf. For this specific diesel unloading pump application, we selected two NRBAL Rotary Vane pumps to be incorporated into the truck unloading skid supported by a range of tailor-made product features for this client.
Manual or automatic operation The diesel unloading pump skid we specified can be set for both. With automatic operation it starts or stops according to inputs or set criteria being met. Whereas manual operation means that the operator takes control of all functions. In addition, both pumps were mounted on a common baseplate with anti-vibration mounts, a set of pressure gauges, integrated strainers and a safety relief valve for pump protection.
Bespoke control panel Control panels on skid-mounted pumps are often customised to meet the requirements of the system and the application. They are essentially the brains and act as an interface between
For this project, we designed, manufactured and integrated a 15Kw DOL (Direct Online) bespoke panel with the following specification onto the truck unloading skid: • Integrated flow meter totaliser giving remote monitoring with hard-wired contacts for pump running, pump fault and flow 4 to 20mA via a splitter • Phase Failure relay and motor protection to prevent pumps from operating if a phase is down or supply is out of symmetry. Plus an indicating lamp on the door to warn if phase failure has occured • Two sets of control gear consisting of protection breaker, contactor and overload all rated to 15kw • A beacon with green and red indicators mounted on top of the panel with green for pump running, red for alarm • Supply of safety relay and terminals for a Newson Gale Road Truck Recognition (RTR) truck grounding device. • Low pressure switches in relay logic to stop pump after a timed period
Flow rate totaliser and indicator This enabled the operator to verify that the pump set was working as required, and it provides accurate measurement of the amount of diesel being transferred into the tanks.
Pressure transducer/switch This shows operators the pressure that the equipment is operating under, to ensure that there are no performance issues. Machine manufacturers and the need for EU Authorised Representatives If you export to the European Union, you may have heard about EU Authorised Representatives and be wondering what they are. How do they differ from distributors or importers? What do they have to do? Who should have one and how are they appointed? In this article we will explain the regulatory requirements and what you need to know about Authorised Representatives. All the talk about Authorised Representatives (ARs) stems from the European Union (EU) Regulation 2019/1020 on market surveillance and compliance of products. This came into force on 16 July 2021 with the aim of improving the ‘policing’ of markets in the EU to ensure products comply with applicable regulations and directives. Although Regulation 2019/1020 has been in force for over two years, there is still a widespread lack of awareness among UK businesses exporting to the EU. Annex I of Regulation 2019/1020 lists approximately 70 product directives that are affected. Examples from the industrial sector include: • 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive • 2014/30/EU Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive • 2014/35/EU Low Voltage Directive (LVD) • 2014/29/EU Simple Pressure Vessels Directive (SPVD) • 2014/68/EU Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) • 2014/34/EU ATEX Equipment Other directives listed in Annex I cover products as diverse as

While Regulation 2019/1020 places obligations on Member States and their market authorities, it also has important implications for manufacturers that export to the EU – and this includes the UK now it is no longer a member of the EU. Specifically, Regulation 2019/1020 contains requirements relating to an ‘economic operator’. Without an economic operator established in the EU, you are prohibited from placing goods on the market.
The economic operator is responsible for ensuring the conformity documentation is available, co-operating with market surveillance authorities and informing authorities if there are reasons to believe a product presents a risk. According to Regulation 2019/1020, an economic operator can be any of the following: the manufacturer; the importer; an authorised representative; or a fulfilment service provider when none of the foregoing are established in the EU. Article 3 of the Regulation provides definitions for these four terms. If a manufacturer is based outside the EU, the options for an economic operator are restricted to an importer, AR or fulfilment service provider. For industrial products or those where regulatory compliance is complex, it is unlikely that an importer or fulfilment service provider will be competent or willing to take on the responsibilities of being the economic operator.
Furthermore, if a manufacturer appoints an importer as the economic operator, this could entail sharing valuable intellectual property contained in technical files, which manufacturers will be reluctant to do. This leaves an AR as the only viable option. An AR is defined in Regulation 2019/1020 as any natural or legal person established within the Union who has received a written mandate from a manufacturer to act on its behalf in relation to specified tasks with regard to the manufacturer’s obligations under the relevant Union harmonisation legislation or under the requirements of the Regulation. Appointing an AR may seem like a simple administrative exercise but note that the AR needs to be competent to understand the conformity documentation and ensure it is suitable for purpose, and must be capable of responding to enquiries from market surveillance authorities. To bolster market surveillance, the EU has established a Union Product Compliance Network. This serves as a platform for structured co-ordination and cooperation between enforcement

For manufacturers outside the EU needing to appoint an EU AR, Hold Tech Files Ltd is based in the Republic of Ireland and is therefore established in the EU as required by Regulation 2019/1020. The company offers a service whereby it acts as an AR for any of the Directives listed in Annex I. This includes the Directives relating to industrial products as well as others ranging from aerosol dispensers, boilers and fertilisers, through to chemicals (REACH), cosmetics and weighing instruments. Although the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC predates Regulation 2019/1020, one of the Machinery Directive essential health and safety requirements (1.7.3) states that the machinery must be marked visibly, legibly and indelibly with the business name and full address of the manufacturer and, where applicable, his authorised
For machine builders, system integrators and suppliers of safety components falling within the scope of the existing Machinery Directive, the requirement in Regulation 2019/1020 for an economic operator is additional. Manufacturers outside the EU must still name a person established in the EU on the Declaration of Conformity (DoC) or Declaration of Incorporation (DoI) as being authorised to compile the technical file. For clarity, it would be advisable to name the person authorised to compile the technical file separately from the AR, even though it is simplest if both are, in fact, the same person. As well as being appointed as an AR, Hold Tech Files can also be named on the DoC or DoI as the person authorised to compile the technical file. For this second service, Hold Tech Files has created a simple webbased portal where clients can sign a mandate, pay a fee and upload the relevant file to a secure server. The client is then entitled to name Hold Tech Files on the DoC or DoI for a period of up to ten years. This period can be extended, the files modified or updated, and more products added, all via the selfservice portal. SIL 3 Certification for Oliver Twinsafe’s Single Isolate and Double Block & Bleed Valves
Oliver Twinsafe Trunnion Mounted valves and Floating Ball Valves have successfully been SIL certified at level 3. This new and important milestone provides operators with safety assurances at the highest level and has resulted from many months of engineering design, QA reviews, and audits. A SIL (Safety Integrity Level) is a measure of safety system performance, in terms of probability of failure on demand (PFD). The
higher the SIL level, the higher the associated safety level, and the lower probability that a system will fail to perform properly. SIL 3 is the highest rating that can be given to a valve. High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS) and remotely located well-head manifolds are normally associated with SIL certification. Operators are to gain additional safety assurances from installing our ball valves, in that, when the valve is required to
perform its fail-safe function, the probability of it not performing is extremely low. SIL 3 certification has been awarded by Exida, a third-party safety assessment organisation. The certification covers our range of Single Isolate valves, and Double Block and Bleed valves comprising two separate isolates within the assembly. Bore sizes for Trunnion Mounted valves range from 1” – 16” and 1” – 3” on Floating Ball valves.
