The Brassworks is a beautiful conversion of a former factory building in central London into a series of stunning light-filled, loftstyle apartments. large arched doorways, whose gates contain a playful brass motif referencing the building’s musical history. Tucked away on this level lie two apartments, including a particularly impressive flat with irregular walls, an internal glazed courtyard and a sunken media room.

reminder that the contemporary living spaces are contained within a building that remains full of history and character. Externally, the original facade has been restored, allowing the building to sit proudly once again within its conservation area setting.

The Brassworks was built in 1819 as a brass instrument factory for Distin’s Military Musical Instrument Manufactory. It was later used by Boosey & Co - a well-known manufacturer familiar to generations of musicians. During the 20th century it suffered from numerous alterations and significant damage, and was more recently used for offices. Although it was Grade II listed, the building was neglected and falling further into disrepair.

From the first floor level, Belsize Architects have exploited the U-shaped layout of the building. A series of former workshops were removed to create a central courtyard which now acts as a focal point for the building. The central garden, containing a specially-commissioned bronze sculpture, is a peaceful haven and brings daylight and a sense of space into the heart of every apartment. The apartments facing the courtyard at ground level enjoy privacy thanks to a series of sliding glass panels that add further visual interest to the courtyard facades.

Despite its location on a dense urban plot, almost all the apartments have access to private outdoor space. The top floor apartments enjoy large roof terraces with excellent views across central London, while apartments elsewhere enjoy private space thanks to a series of spacious openair loggias overlooking the courtyard.

Belsize Architects were engaged by the Church Commissioners to convert the building - previously known as 6A-10 Frederick Close - into a series of loft-style apartments. Belsize Architects were anxious to create attractive, liveable spaces while respecting the original structure as much as possible, and worked with the building to give it a new life for contemporary residential use.

Each apartment has been designed to the highest specification including custommade kitchens and furniture, en-suite bathrooms and bespoke wardrobes in all bedrooms and high-specification flooring and other finishes. State-of-the art heating, cooling and AV technology has been used throughout the development, and the energy efficiency of the building has been maximised wherever possible.

At ground floor, an imposing central entrance gives way to a warm, welcoming reception area. On either side, car parking and other facilities are screened behind

Nevertheless, the heritage of the original building shines through: for example the bronze-effect windows and huge steel beams traversing each apartment are a

The Brassworks also succeeds in bringing new life to a previously run-down building that is now well-integrated into its surroundings. Prior to the refurbishment, this otherwise extremely attractive corner of London was blighted by the old musical instrument factory, which was succumbing rapidly to dereliction and had frustrated several earlier attempts to bring it back to use. Thanks to Belsize Architects’ refurbishment, it is once again an extremely handsome and well-maintained building that sits comfortably alongside its neighbouring properties within an important conservation area. The Brassworks recently made the shortlist for the RIBA Regional Awards London 2013 and the RICS Awards 2013.

Schöck is the natural choice for green balconies Finsbury Park Place is a high quality, sustainable mixed tenure development, in North London. It comprises four penthouses and a selection of one, two and three bedroom apartments – 109 units in all, with 67 for social rent. The scheme includes photovoltaic panels to power the communal lighting and triple glazing for thermal enhancement and improved acoustic values. There is a high level of thermal insulation and CO2 emissions are anticipated to be 44% better than current building regulations requirements.

Refurb & Renovation News

The frontage of the development has an uninterrupted view across the open spaces of Finsbury Park, and the location has undoubtedly influenced the exterior design. All apartments have either walk-out balconies or terraces, and the parkland aspect is reflected in the high quality tonal contrast face brickwork, complemented by glazed, inset green-tinted balconies.

These large cantilever balconies are supported on one side only, using the type K Isokorb from Schöck, which provides a thermal break between external reinforced concrete components and the building. The Isokorb also transfers bending moment stress and shear forces, while the integrated hanging and perimeter tensile reinforcement, which is fitted as standard, also saves the unnecessary and costly use of extra stirrups or hooped mat. The Isokorb range allows connections to be made between concrete-to-concrete, concrete-to-steel and steel-to-steel. It is a range that also comfortably exceeds the requirements of the UK regulation (BRE IP1/06) which stipulates that the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (fRSI,) must be greater than, or equal to, 0.75 for residential buildings. Avoid Problem with BS 8215 Adherence to BS 8215 can result in a structure suffering dampness as unfortunately the British Standard contains some errors. An example being stepped and staggered gable abutments where damp protection is shown every third course up the slope, which can allow water to permeate in between those courses and affect parts of the structure that should be kept dry. The NHBC suggests the use of cavity trays be considered. Approved Type X cavitrays manufactured by Cavity Trays of Yeovil are specifically designed for use with stepped and staggered intersections and avoid the BS 8215 problem. Awarded European Technical Approval they come with a performance warranty benefitting builder, architect and client. The BS 8215 stepped arrangement will not provide continuous protection - but approved Type X cavitrays will protect – and importantly come with an accompanying warranty. Launch a Healthy Living Hygrometer and Thermometer

Humidity plays an important role in our day to day health, but can often be overlooked in the average home and its effects are often underestimated. Exposure to damp and mouldy environments can cause a variety of health issues. Some people are sensitive to mould. For these people, mould can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. Mould can also trigger asthma episodes in sensitive individuals who suffer from asthma. These health issues are often caused by poor ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens. High humidity levels cause mould to grow on ceilings and walls, and to reproduce. Mould requires the % Relative Humidity (rh) to exceed 70 %rh for some time before it starts growing. Scientists have shown that for people to feel comfortable and stay healthy, the %rh should be in the range of 30 to 60%rh and in the temperature range of 18 to 25 °C. The new healthy living Therma-Hygrometer simultaneously displays both the humidity and temperature, in addition to indicating and recording the maximum and minimum readings. The unit includes colour-coded zones for ‘dry’, ‘comfort’ and ‘wet’, making it very easy to read. For a relatively small investment, home owners and tenants can now monitor the environment, reducing the risks of developing health problems in the future. The Therma-Hygrometer is economically priced at £8.50 each, exclusive of VAT and carriage.

In the kitchen, black is the new black for worktops, according to makeover specialist, Granite Transformations. Although earthen tones seemed to be gaining in popularity last year, black worktops have had a strong renaissance, with recycled glass worktop Black Star now clocking up 23% of all Granite Transformations’ sales. What’s more, black worktops in general represent 54% of installations, its granite finishes Nero Stella and Nero Galaxy also proving particularly popular. “One of the reasons that Black Star is in demand is that it contains fragments of mirror fleck, which creates an incredible sparkling effect under halogen lighting,” says Granite Transformations’ UK chief, Danny Hanlon. “It’s a diamond-polished surface featuring exceptionally deep hues of blue and black, which goes with any kitchen, rustic or modern, and with any colour of cabinet.” W: www.granitetransformations.co.uk or T: 0800 822 3410 Enq. 117

SAFETY FIRST

s employers, housing associations have a legal responsibility to ensure their employees and anyone else who could be affected by their work (such as visitors and members of the public) are kept safe from harm. In providing social housing however, there is an additional level of responsibility when specifying flooring, especially where this will be used by older residents and other vulnerable tenants with greater than average challenges around mobility and balance.

Durability is important too.

Kitchens and bathrooms in particular carry a heightened level of risk due to the presence of‘contaminants’(predominantly water) during everyday use. Entrance areas can also require attention. In the case of kitchens, the greatest danger is spillages. Installing safety flooring in communal kitchen areas, and providing advice and visual reminders of how to deal quickly and effectively with spills can provide safeguards. Barrier matting, safety flooring and good housekeeping can also make a difference for entrance areas.

It’s also worth considering best practice for inclusive design. Traditional safety flooring has a ‘sparkle’, which can cause some difficulties to people with visual impairments or dementia as it can appear to be wet. There are now a wide range of colours and finishes without the sparkle, including bold and bright colours, light colours and wood-effect safety floors. These all help to create a homely feel whilst not compromising on safety, and again, can help future-proof your developments.

When choosing safety flooring, first and foremost consider the level of slip resistance it provides. It should have a Slip Resistance Value (SRV) of 36 or above and a surface roughness of greater than 20 microns to meet the recommendations of the HSE. Ensure you choose a safety flooring that maintains its slip resistance for its entire life cycle to avoid storing up problems in years to come – some products behave in a dramatically different way a couple of years after installation. Reputable manufacturers will be happy to provide results of performance over time for their products.

As well as providing slip resistant flooring, you should also be aware that subtle differences between floors, walls, steps and doorways can cause enough uncertainty to result in a fall. Light Reflectance Values (LRVs) are the best way to measure contrast. Every material has an LRV marked out of 100 points. To meet requirements, there should be at least a 30 point variance in LRVs between adjacent surfaces such as floors and walls. Where different types of flooring are used alongside each other and there is no step between them, it’s equally important to

Altro Aquarius safety flooring designed to provide slip resistance for people in shoes and in bare feet.

If you’re looking at flooring for older or disabled people, or working to Lifetime Homes principles, think about scuffing and other damage that can be caused by wheelchairs, walking sticks or other walking aids, and choose flooring that you’re certain is up to the task – warranties can be a good measure of this. We also advise looking at life-cycle costs to assess best value rather than opting for the cheapest initial outlay and then finding you need to replace the flooring.

ensure that the LRVs of the materials are as similar as possible to avoid creating the illusion of a step where there is none.

Also remember that the performance of safety flooring is affected by the way it is maintained. You can help avoid issues by choosing the latest generation of safety floors with PUR coatings and easy clean technologies. There is yet more to consider when looking at bathrooms, showers and wetrooms because water between the foot and the flooring reduces the slip resistance performance of traditional safety flooring. There is an accepted standard for bare foot use - DIN51097 - and a common solution is to install flooring with a studded surface to give a better grip, though this can be difficult to clean in a domestic environment. The very latest developments include safety flooring for use in wet and dry areas, for shoe and barefoot use, in a range of colours and without studs. This is an ideal solution for bathroom areas, particularly where carers may be providing assistance. Responsible buying decisions should also consider environmental impact. There are many safety floors that meet the very highest BRE Green Guide standards based on raw materials, manufacturing processes and recyclability.

Shower Delight at the push of a button - Hansgrohe Select The innovative Select collection from Hansgrohe includes Raindance Select hand showers, overhead showers and showerpipes with ShowerSelect and ShowerTablet thermostatic bath/shower controls - all with simple push button ‘select’ operation. Intuitive and enjoyable to use for all ages, even with soapy hands, Select offers a reliable manual control rather than error-prone electronics. As a highly functional solution for exposed installations, the Hansgrohe experts developed the ShowerTablet Select 300, an attractive and generously dimensioned shelf for storage, in a unit that also does the work of a thermostat. A new shut-off valve allows turning the flow of water on and off by simply pushing a button and no longer by rotating. The Select buttons with their elegant matt finish are positioned on the left and feature clear symbols either with a shower icon only or shower and bathtub for the model with integrated bath spout. As part of the programme, the engineers at Hansgrohe have re- invented the shower heads to offer two types of shower spray in a single product. Raindance Select now offers the choice of gentle aerated RainAir and the forceful, effective Rain shower spray. Both spray types are delivered across the entire face of the shower and for the hand shower there is also the added spray choice of a powerful Whirl massage spray. The Select feature makes switching between spray modes easy. Simply push the button to click between jet types and enjoy your perfect shower. The new Raindance Select E300 3jet overhead shower features a new third style of spray called RainStream. Rows of cascading shower nozzles project the water in a uniform curtain which keeps its shape all the way down to the ground. This is switched on and off by a button on the thermostat. Working with the renowned designers Phoenix Design (Stuttgart/Tokyo), there are two new designs for the Raindance Select showers: SoftCube, which is square with softened corners, or a timeless cylindrical design. Both combine easily with other styles and are available in a choice of all-chrome or fresh dual colour chrome and white.

Ceilings, Walls & Partitions Armstrong’s peerless recycling

schemes turn others green with envy

Armstrong Ceilings has taken its recycling schemes to new heights by extending them to include non-Armstrong tiles. Armstrong World Industries is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the launch of its award-winning ceilings recycling schemes with a series of significant developments that truly place the programme at the forefront in the UK. Among other initiatives, Armstrong now pledges to recycle nonArmstrong ceiling tiles, enabling contractors to make even more substantial savings on waste disposal costs - some £120 on each skip containing 250m2 of old ceiling tiles. The Armstrong end-of-life scheme now applies to any quantity of all wet felt, stone wool and glass wool ceiling tiles where they are replaced by Armstrong tiles, with full loads of the old tiles transported back free of charge to Armstrong’s factory in Gateshead where they are made into new tiles – a service unique to Armstrong. Armstrong, whose own ceiling tiles now contain up to 82% recycled content, has developed a “green” branch of its Omega network of approved sub-contractors, specifically for those installers with recycling expertise. Armstrong’s recycling schemes have recycled 11.5million m2 globally and almost 300 tonnes in the UK in 2012 alone. Waterloo Station’s new retail balcony is visually striking

At 220 metres in length the new retail balcony at London’s busiest station – Waterloo – is visually very striking, in no small part due to the materials choice. Working under BAM Construction, SAS Project Management designed and installed an innovative solution for the curved aluminium soffit cladding to the underside of the new Mezzanine level and escalators. The soffit panels have been specially designed so they provide a secure concealed fix panel system with discreet joints, yet allow access where required to services above. Panel sizes are maximised using 2mm aluminium to create the overall aesthetic. A key benefit of SAS International’s involvement at design stage meant that ease of buildability in the construction process and consideration of ongoing maintenance requirements from the outset were factored in. A very modern aesthetic was chosen for the balcony which still manages to expose the older stone and brick vertical interior façade. By specifying metal cladding, with toughened glass for the balustrades, the BAM design team chose a durable and sympathetic material choice. SAS International has worked successfully on three separate phases of Waterloo station’s refurbishment alongside a range of designers and project teams. The refurbishment has taken place in a series of phases rather than necessitating a full closure of this important transport hub. Energy Saving Coatings Supplied by Blygold UK Ltd.

Window renovation sealing taped with ISO-BLOCO Reno

Insulation… in a tin

No, this is not “another energy saving claim" ask The Marriott Hotel Group, Virgin Media, Glaxo Smith Kline, ASDA, to name but a few! Blygold coatings seal off the heat exchanger fin coil block from the atmosphere to prevent corrosion, increase the heat transfer, increase the efficiency and so reduce the run time. The hydrophobic nature of the coating keeps the coil cleaner and the air flow free from obstruction, thereby avoiding an increase in condensing temperature and a resultant increase in energy usage! Tested and confirmed by BSRIA and BRE!

Improved sealing and insulation of window renovation projects is provided by ISO-BLOCO Reno now available from leading supplier ISO-Chemie. The ISO-BLOCO Reno self-adhesive sealing system fits directly into the U-recess left from the removal of an old window before installation of the replacement one to provide a 100% airtight and vapour barrier seal plus an external weather tight seal. The system features two inter-connecting sealing components to ensure an all-in-one, three-level sealing solution. The core layer, made from high-quality polymeric material, provides a smooth surface for the seal and guarantees a tight fit in the U-recess. Quick and easy-to-apply, the self-adhesive ISO-BLOCO Reno provides a high performance seal for renovation projects.

Now, using Thermo Emulsion from Nutshell, walls and ceilings can be insulated with a paint! Via the use of Nano and Micro technology, Thermo Emulsion is a revolutionary new paint that resists thermal transfer through walls and other surfaces, and creates a thermal barrier by reflecting over 92.35% of the infrared spectrum and an emissivity of 0.08 Using these test results we show a 15.7% reduction in heating energy use in a standard 3 bed semi or a 30% reduction in U-values on a solid wall construction.

At MACO, we’ve listened to you! Our exciting new products and services have been created as a direct result of having conversations with many Fabricators and Installers, discovering areas of ‘pain’ within their daily working lives.

Refurb & Renovation News

The new M-SPAG comes in a single telescopic design, and we’ve decreased the size range from 9 on MACH II and M3 shootbolts to 4, covering a sash size from 320mm right up to 1500mm! No longer do you have to think about extensions, cover plates and stocking lots of differing sizes. The same product can be used for a number of window styles such as French casements, top hung windows, and low handle height windows etc. One product many solutions! The C-TS combined lever lever and split spindle door lock is also a direct result of these conversations, a key issue for all parties was handle operating forces. MACO have solved this problem by innovating a number of steps within a locks manufacture. The new locks boast excellent handle forces even under increased compression. During our product development testing we measured the force required to lock and unlock the C-TS, and to simulate compression we hung 10kg weights on the drive track, even under these extreme conditions the forces to lock and unlock the door remained at around 5Nm, really impressive when compared to existing locks. Our new euro profile cylinder has been awarded the British Standards kitemark TS2007 3*, many cylinders on the market claim to meet this standard but very few have actually been awarded this coveted kitemark. We are upping the anti literally as the new cylinder boasts credentials such as anti pick, anti drill, anti bump, anti snap and anti screw and plug retraction. The patent pending cylinder comes in silver or brass finish with key or knob turn options and can be offered as keyed alike, all with 3 keys per cylinder. Town Hall Hotel to complete in Bethnal Green, London ecently Completed Town Hall Hotel is a new 98-room luxury hotel, restaurant and bar housed in the old Bethnal Green Town Hall, at the heart of London’s burgeoning East End. Comprising the provision of a contemporary extension in the form of a new top floor and wing, the project also included the restoration and refurbishment of the existing Grade II listed building.

R

Originally erected in 1910 the Edwardian town hall on Cambridge Heath Road was considerably extended in 1937 onto Patriot Square, where the entrance to the new hotel can now be found. Through the years, the 7500 square metre building housed the area’s municipal administration, but was victim to numerous modifications insensitive to its preservation and finally fell out of use and was vacated in 1993. Used only as a location for films and television, the building was left to decay in the intervening years until its purchase in 2007 by Singaporean hotelier Peng Loh. Consulted before the purchase and commissioned immediately thereafter, RARE directors Michel da Costa Gonçalves and Nathalie Rozencwajg were tasked by their client with designing a contemporary luxury hotel to sit sympathetically within the existing building, restore this building and also add to its volume with an extension. RARE saw the project as the building’s third age, after the 1910 and 1937 phases, and an opportunity to reinvent, as well as restore, a forgotten architectural treasure of the East End. Despite the building being on the at-risk register, RARE’s considered approach to the project, a guiding concept of the development and use of traditional techniques and motifs within contemporary cutting edge design and manufacturing technologies, won the approval of English Heritage and planning permission was granted by Tower Hamlets in 2008. The extension to the building, a new wing that stands behind the original 1910 structure and an additional floor that sits atop the flat roof of the 1937 extension, provides a further 1500 square metres of accommodation. Wrapped entirely by a laser cut powder coated aluminium

skin, no windows or doors are externally visible, allowing it to create a striking abstract backdrop to the original structure, while simultaneously making a definite statement as new architecture. The pattern cut into the skin was taken from a pattern book rare developed for the project. An original art deco feature in the Council Chamber inspired the parametrically defined pattern book, a design exercise apparent in not only the aluminium skin but many of rare’s new interventions in the hotel from radiator and air conditioning covers to decorative wall panels. The effect of the pattern cut into the skin is performative, allowing natural light into the rooms behind it, while also preserving the privacy of those both inside and out. The faceted form of the extension’s skin and roof was dictated by light and views that had to be maintained for neighbouring buildings. RARE’s design response to these parameters is an example of their ability to provide harmonious elegance and functionality. The skin’s distinctive form is repeated in features including the hotel’s brass reception desk and corridor ceilings of the extension, again bringing together glamour and function. The dimensions of each of the 98 rooms are different, something dictated by the nature of the building and its listed status, therefore allowing rare to provide 98 unique layouts and designs. RARE performed an entire internal re-planning of the space in the building and inserted zones of contemporary hotel comfort into these rooms with what they call their ‘spatial furniture’. Bespoke pods of discrete beds, desks, storage space, kitchens and bathroom suites rendered in materials ranging from CNC milled MDF, Corian, Green Lime marble, glass,

oak and Cardoso and Vals stone with light fixtures specially commissioned from suppliers Viabizzuno, all work to interrupt but also sit comfortably within the historical context of the building. The use of a design strategy specific to each room provides charm and function while maintaining a clear delineation between the restored and the new. The reinvention and restoration of the existing building was driven by RARE’s intensive research of the town hall’s archive of original design elements and realised by numerous highly skilled craftspeople; bringing the building back to its former glorious grandeur, breathing new life into marble floors, ornate moulded ceilings, Edwardian and Art Deco detailing. In addition to the residential accommodation RARE have also provided a new 14 metre titanium tiled lap pool in the basement, restored Conference Room and Mayor’s Room for functions and separate bar and restaurant in the Edwardian wing of the building. The bar and restaurant, named Viajante and accessed from the building’s original Cambridge Heath Road entrance, are furnished solely with bespoke RARE pieces and decorated with silicone injected tapestries and chandeliers designed in collaboration with textile designer Tzuri Guetta. RARE directors Michel da Costa Gonçalves and Nathalie Rozencwajg said: “The building plays with the division and connection between old and new and is a reinvention as well as a restoration – one which we hope will be a treasured landmark for East London”

Rainwater Harvesting

Harvesting Communally

from Polypipe

Rainharvesting Systems Ltd. devised and supplied the rainwater harvesting scheme on a social housing development in Cheltenham for Markey Construction. The inclusion of the rainwater harvesting enabled the client, Cottsway Housing Association, to achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. The system is designed around a single 18,000-litre tank supplying all 13 properties on the site. The harvested water is pumped to a small individual header tank in each dwelling. The header tanks are designed to always take water from the rainwater store as long as it is available, but will then automatically revert to running from mains water if needed. This provides an ideal solution for such a situation, as each property has its own independent back-up from the mains water supply. www.rainharvesting.co.uk Enq. 146

Rainwater harvesting involves collecting the free resource that rainwater represents, storing it and pumping it to the point of use when it’s needed. Instantly, the need for mains water is dramatically reduced. So are water bills. Rainstream from Polypipe Building Products is predominantly targeted at domestic installations but can be used in light commercial applications too. Rainwater harvesting can replace up to 50% of household mains water consumption, and up to 85% on commercial installations. Visit www.polypipe.com and see how rainwater

Newly launched Pro Board is a high performance waterproof construction/tilebacker board manufactured from high density polystyrene with a specially formulated reinforced cement-based coating which enhances the fireresistant properties of the board. This creates a tile ready surface, and also gives the board excellent impact resistance. Pro board is suitable for both internal and external walls and floors, and its thermal efficiency ensures heat is not lost to the substrate below, particularly when used with undertile heating. The board is available in a range of thicknesses and with an option of pre-made falls they are also ideal for balconies and roof terraces. In accordance with BS 5385-3:2003, in order to receive a tiled finish the base should have a surface regularity of SR1. Norcros Universal Leveller, Pro 50 and the new 2-Part Levelling Compound ensure that this requirement can be achieved. For further details visit – www.norcros-adhesives.com Enq. 156

UZIN Turbolight system used at The Southend Casino.

Refurb & Renovation News

The UZIN Turbolight system was used to install 1250 m2 of flooring at Southend Casino, Essex. Polished Concrete Designs Ltd choose the Turbolight® System to rapidly create a lightweight floor to reduce weight difficulties within the buildings structure. The numerous levels and the varying condition of the substrate dictated the need for a product that could cope with all the variants, carry good point loads and gave the client a billiard table finish. Due to the buildings structural restrictions a normal concrete screed would have been too heavy and could only have possession of 20% of the area at any one time. The solution to each of these required parameters existed within the UZIN product range. After the initial visit from the UZIN Technical team, a specification was formulated between Polished Concrete designs and UZIN which resulted in the supply and install of the floor. After cleaning the substrate, Polished Concrete Designs Ltd first applied a DPM as a sandwich membrane between the base concrete and the screed. UZIN NC 194 Turbo screed was then pumped to a depth of 50 mm, before the UZIN RR 201 reinforcement mesh was installed on the surface. Finally UZIN NC 195, bonded cement leveling compound was applied at a thickness of 10 mm. The new floor was then exceptionally well finished.

Haverland’s Energy Saving, Heating Solution For The Rental Property Market Energy saving radiators from Stelrad The recent arrival of the first serial feed radiator in the UK – the Radical from Stelrad - which offers 50% more radiant heat than a standard parallel feed radiator, 23% faster heat up and 53% hotter front panel with significantly less heat loss from the back panel - and a 10.5% reduction in energy bills – has revolutionised the benefits available from radiators in 2013. This new serial feed radiator has been independently tested by KIWA and they have given it a certificate of 10.5% energy saving, which translates straight to lower heating bills. These serial feed radiators work equally well with traditional boiler driven heating systems and with renewable systems – such as ground source and air source heat pumps – with the lower water temperatures renewable heating systems utilise, offering comfortable warmth up to 8% more quickly. With a Radical serial feed radiator you feel warmer, faster and cheaper. Visit www.stelrad.com or call 0870 849 8056 for information. Enq. 166

HEATBANK

SALES WARM UP

Seven new independent companies have just signed up to show off and display the Xcel HEATBANK® Thermal store from the specialist Specflue group at a recent, event held at Waxmans renewables training centre in Yorkshire.

Refurb & Renovation News

These future thinking green retailers pretty much signed up immediately to display the unique and pioneering HEATBANK® system. Jon Howarth, one of Specflue’s Business Development Manager’s, whose enthusiasm and passion for the product helped convey the many benefits of incorporating thermal store technology into the renewable industry picture, made an instant hit when using the Xcel HEATBANK® design as an example of how this infrastructure opens up the door for multi fuel manipulation and use. As Jon observes “The impressive silver display cylinder certainly catches the eyes of consumers. They are really impressed to learn that the HEATBANK® product can take up to FIVE renewable heat source inputs simultaneously including woodstoves, solar thermal and pellet boilers with optional electric backup ideal and perfectly compatible for people needing sustainable development. Designs and quotations for the Xcel HEATBANK® thermal store can be produced quickly and easily via Specflue’s free customer friendly online software service - www.systemdesigner.co.uk.” Technically talking the design can be easily manipulated in the future whether you wish to build in stages and add different technologies at different times or change and re-organise the layout with connections. It offers delivery of high performance high flow rate direct palatable water to taps, baths and showers without risk of Legionella Disease and using heat exchangers which are much better than coils. No large water storage in the loft is required and simultaneous central heating is delivered to radiators, underfloor heating and towel rails. Jon also points out “We were delighted to be linked with Waxman’s excellent premises and reputation and we share their mission to meet the Government’s target of reducing emissions by 15% by 2020 by virtue of making homes more energy efficient and cost effective. We offer a free design service and guarantee designs will work..... guarantees which are better than anyone else in the market and cover a 25 year guarantee on the base cylinder. On a number of occasions swapped - out scaled up coil type thermal stores that underperform have been replaced by the HEATBANK® with underwritten performance. The unit is made from Duplex stainless steel from one of the top UK manufacturers who also make nuclear power plant cylinders so longevity is guaranteed. We use a patented top-down rapid recovery economy system in the Xcel HEATBANK® that allows you to choose how much water is heated and how much energy you use rather than heating the whole cylinder when not necessary. The cylinders come completely pre-built and prefabricated ready to go so there is no extra sourcing of parts or extra building on site giving the customer complete piece of mind knowing everything has been thought of and included to accept the chosen heat sources" For further details of Specflue products and services call free 0800 9020220: email sales@specflue.com or visit www.specflue.com

Calor LPG – low carbon energy beyond the gas main Calor’s experience suggests that the benefits of LPG are often not considered, when replacing an oil boiler. With many old oil boilers running at below 50% efficiency the temptation has been to simply upgrade the appliance to a better performing modern oil-burning equivalent. However, switching to a new LPG boiler can deliver much more. LPG prices tend to be more stable than oil prices, so switching to LPG enables clients to budget more accurately. Furthermore the overall running costs of a system, its capital cost and true operating efficiency, is an area in which LPG can beat oil. Working with Blades Low carbon Systems, Calor can now offer LPG heating solutions that operate at even higher system efficiencies than new oil systems. Calculations indicate that the savings achieved more than offset any additional costs associated with switching fuels. The Blades boiler system has been designed to deliver up to 97% heating system efficiency, working with a building’s traditional hot radiator system. By contrast, many oil boiler systems seldom run anywhere near their quoted boiler efficiency of 95% when heating an existing, old radiator system. Instead they typically run at around 85% efficiency. Having established that running an LPG system can actually be cheaper than oil, CalorForce, Calor’s in-house engineering and installation team, can undertake any necessary work to switch from oil. The supply contract, tank and pipework installation, plus the physical heating solution can all be offered in one simple end to end process. Calor can even arrange removal of your existing oil tank and boiler. The advantages of LPG for commercial users in off-gas areas go much further than cost-saving and convenience. LPG is the lowest carbon, offgas mains fossil fuel, emitting 11.7% less CO2 per kWh than oil. Oil leakage is becoming a major concern for commercial users, costing some businesses thousands of pounds in clean-up costs and fines. Unburnt LPG is carbon neutral, and simply evaporates into the atmosphere. Similarly oil is relatively easy to steal, whereas the theft of LPG is rare. LPG is now widely recognised as the most appropriate fossil fuel for providing heating and hot water to modern, low carbon, off-gas industries and businesses.

When performance is everything chose Samika from Greenwood Airvac

As eco-conscious businesses and households increasingly look to install environmental heating systems, leading container company, Pentalver, has launched a bespoke service using its ISO containers to create an inspired solution to the conundrum of where to house a new boiler and fuel store. With a ready supply of new or pre-used containers, storage facilities, skilled container conversion personnel and on site electrics and plumbing, Pentalver is able to rework the internal container space to create a separate boiler house and fuel store specific to the needs of the boiler or fuel, with an internal capacity of 33.2 mÂł (this space can be increased by joining more ISO containers together). Shipping containers are also extremely strong structurally with a physical weight bearing capability in excess of 20 ton, ideal for housing the boiler equipment and the fuel. Pentalver boiler house conversions retail at varied levels dependant on the spec and size required, and the level of internal fit-out required by the customer. Enq. 171

Leading manufacturer of innovative ventilation products, Greenwood Airvac, is pleased to announce the launch of Samika, their latest development in intermittent ventilation technology for kitchens and bathrooms. Designed for use in the Social Housing sector Samika introduces the new and innovative concept of adaptive extraction for intermittent fan technology. Unique to the market, it means Samika can be adapted at the point of installation for any application – wall, window, ducted in a ceiling – to enable it to meet its fundamental objective of providing Guaranteed Installed Performance (GIP) first time and assuring Building Control sign-off. This unique adjustability is important as application can impact the installed performance of a fan in the home by up to 50%, leading to the all too familiar issues associated with under ventilation. Interiors & Interior Design Structural Panels:

You Will Not Find A Stronger One Engineered wood products are developed to fulfill specific requirements of different industrial sectors. Among these, perhaps the most demanding specification is that of structural use. To meet these heavyduty standards, FINSA has created SuperPan TECH P5 and P6, unique and exclusive products, protected by patent nr. 99966972.4. These high performance boards are suitable for a wide range of structural applications. The main advantages of SuperPan TECH are: High resistance: Its improved bending strength coupled with its high modulus of elasticity make it the right product for the most demanding load situations. On the other hand, it allows the use of lower thicknesses than those used in traditional chipboard solutions, which means a significant cost saving while ensuring the same performance. Surface quality: SuperPan’s smooth and compact surface is ideal for coating with vinyl, linoleum, ceramics or epoxy paints. Complete range: plain and coated boards specially developed for these applications, with the most suitable formats for the building industry, for a maximum optimization of the material. Tongue-and-groove jointed parts: coated or plain, for quick assembly. Non-slip and design: non-slip finishes provide extra protection agains slipping and a range of decorative colors with the reverse side in white melamine, providing a better reflection of light, which is especially important for industrial interior spaces. Why use wood, when tiles look so good?

Solus Ceramics, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of ceramic, porcelain, glass and metal tiles, introduce Boardwalk, an exciting range of wood effect floor tiles. Boardwalk has been created to mimic the size and shape of traditional floorboards and possess the texture and unique surface quality of real wood. The range is available in a number of colours including shades inspired by oak, silver birch, mahogany and white washed pine. Wood effect floor tiles are the perfect alternative to natural wood flooring solutions as they can withstand heavy use without showing wear and tear, will not fade or darken in the sun, and can be cleaned quickly and easily on a daily basis.

Refurb & Renovation News

Unlike real wood, these tiles will not warp with changes in moisture levels or temperature and also enhance the effects of under floor heating.

Saracen Interiors Launches Three new Divisions

BETTE Extends its Flush to Floor Shower Area with New Side Option

DOCA UK announce its attendance at Kbb London 2013, Stand F30

Saracen Interiors, the South East’s leading office interiors specialist, is preparing for substantial growth in 2013 with repeat business at a record level of 90 per cent and three new divisions now launching: Saracen Facilities, Saracen Small Works and Saracen Move Management. Saracen Facilities is being launched as part of the company’s bid to position Saracen as a facilities management provider to a wider audience. Our new Small Works division holds a particular significance. As we take on more of the multi-million fit out contracts, we are keen not to lose sight of the smaller projects that have a lesser value but an equal importance to everything else that we do. The launch of Saracen Move Management is in direct response to the increased revenue gained from office churn by the company in the past 12 months.

BETTE has created a new version of its award-winning BETTEFLOOR, the steel/enamel flush to floor shower area. BETTEFLOOR SIDE has the outlet to the side of the shower area, rather than in the centre, for an even larger, uninterrupted standing area and more installation options. Like the original BETTEFLOOR SIDE is an enamelled steel shower area that is like one large tile which is permanently water-proof, easy to clean and hygienic. As a continuous surface, without the joints of a tiled area, BETTEFLOOR SIDE ensures perfect hygiene and ease of care. Bacteria and germs do not have a breeding ground on the inorganic, enamel surface. At the same time, dirt and residual soap can be washed away easily from the robust BETTEGLAZE® surface using water and mild bathroom detergents. Brenton Reynolds, Country Manager (UK) Fashion for Home explains:

“As we move into the summer months, we can start looking out for the key trends that are starting to make their way into our homes. As the days get longer and the days a bit warmer, it’s an ideal time to think about incorporating splashes of vibrant colour into your home, as well as softer, slightly pared down tones which will often soften the impact of these splashes of bright, vivid colour. Another important trend, which has stepped off last year’s runways and is now making its way into our homes, is the geometric. The key to incorporating this trend

is to use hints of contrasting shapes and repetitions. The most important thing to do with this trend, however, is to have fun with it – don’t be too rigid in your adherence to it. Alongside this, there are other important trends that are starting to emerge. We’re seeing a growing enthusiasm for juxtaposing warm wood with white lacquer. This contemporary, Scandinavian style of furniture design is increasing in popularity, and we expect to see more of this trend pushing into the rest of the year.

Looking forward, the vibrant colours of the summer will express themselves in bold jewel tones – emerald being the key one. Incorporated with pattern and decorative chintz accessories these really can work together. As well as the jewel trend, we’ll be seeing increasing numbers of homeowners bringing the outdoors in with pieces inspired by nature – trees, leaves, birds and so on, particularly with botanical prints and accessories”

The Carriage Rooms at Montalto Estate

by John J. O’Connell Architects Ltd.

T

he Carriage Rooms at Montalto showcase an outstanding example of how the conservation of a building can successfully lead to its reinvention and revival. The character of the original Mill building at The Carriage Rooms is the venues greatest asset, and this is due to the carefully conserved architectural features, including historic stonework, timber roof structure and original openings. The venue now provides a positive contribution to the locality, and has been very well received by its many visitors. The most important conservation achievement of the project is in bringing the building back to active use. The Mills’ new role will ensure its continued viability, allowing the building to actively be enjoyed and maintained in times to come. In 2009 the concept for The Carriage Rooms was envisioned. As part of diversification of activities, and in order to make the estate financially viable, new uses for some of the estates historic agricultural buildings were examined. There was a market for a high-end venue, and to date there is no other venue similar to this in Northern Ireland that has been commissioned from the private sector. The Client’s brief included the Conservation and Restoration of a mid C19th two-Storey Mill, which lay disused and was suffering from exposure to the elements. The philosophy behind the conservation was to return the building to active use, whilst not compromising its original form. The structure consists of two large rooms, one at each level. These have been retained in their original format, and now house the venues main reception rooms. New extensions has been constructed to accommodate all ancillary functions, such as smaller reception rooms, stairs, lift, toilets, kitchen and plant. This approach allowed the main rooms to remain completely intact. An important element of the brief was for the new building to sit harmoniously within an overall complex of adjacent historic farm buildings. The nature and scale of the new extensions have been carefully considered to ensure that they are suitable for a traditional farmyard location. The design is based on the simple shapes and forms of traditional rural buildings, and emphasis was placed to ensure that the important historic character of the existing building was not lost within the overall scheme. The walls of the new structure are a monolithic construction in Poroton clay blocks. This choice of this material required many details to be specifically developed for this project. The granite eaves and band course are cantilevered from a Poroton ring beam to allow the external insulation to be continuous behind them and eliminating cold bridges. The modern construction and high standards of thermal performance achieved by these walls are a vast difference from the solid stone walls of the existing mill.

The new structures are finished in a rough cast render which was specifically developed for this project by the manufacturer in Germany. This custom finish gives the required vernacular appearance whilst being suitable for use on the wood fibre external insulation system which is installed. The main staircase is a stone cantilever stair, constructed in Newry granite with a simple wrought iron balustrade and bronze capping. The staircase is a key architectural feature within the building encapsulating the projects design approach of using simple traditional materials and quality craftsmanship to create exceptional performance and aesthetic. The overall building is over 1300sqm (existing 628 sqm, new extensions 685 sqm.) The project was delivered on budget at ÂŁ3.3million. Throughout every project stage particular attention was paid to the unique character of the building, and every effort was made to ensure its protection. The care and consideration of the restoration was diligently delivered on site by a local building contractor, with simple traditional materials and techniques being utilised to create exceptional performance and aesthetic. The innovative new use for the mill paired with its successful reinvention and conservation ensures the survival of the building well into the future. Enq 328

SAVED GRADE I LISTED HADLOW TOWER. RESTORATION COMPLETE & BEGINS NEW LIFE AS A HOLIDAY LET The Vivat Trust (Vivat) is delighted to announce that the restoration of Hadlow Tower- the Grade I listed gothic revival folly in Kent- is complete and holiday guests will be able to stay there from May onwards. This historic landmark offers luxury holiday accommodation for six and joins the Vivat Trust’s portfolio of historic holiday properties. Accommodation starts on the first floor of the tower and includes a kitchen and octagonal dining room, a sitting room with wood burning stove, a twin bedroom and separate bathroom, and a double height master bedroom with a bed ringed in by columns and a bathroom suspended above on an inserted floor. A lift suitable for wheelchair users offers access to the first three floors, including direct access to a double bedroom and wet room. The ground floor of Hadlow Tower will provide exhibition space where the history of the building and its significance will be explained. This space will be opened to the public on a regular basis and access to the viewing platform at the top of the lantern will be offered on Thursdays between May and September. The exhibition is an initiative organised by the SAVE Hadlow Tower Action Group. The campaign to save this building- identified by English Heritage as a longstanding building at risk- and provide it with a sustainable new use, has been on-going for a number of years. In 1998 it joined the WMF’s List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites in the World. And following confirmation of a compulsory purchase order in March 2008, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council took the building into their ownership and subsequently entered into a back to back agreement with the Vivat Trust with the trust becoming the owners in February 2011.

Vivat Trust Director, Laura Norris, says: “The Vivat Trust has lived with the shadow of the prerestored Hadlow Tower for over thirteen years now. It has been, at times, an uphill struggle for us but I am incredible proud of both the staff and trustees who have stuck with the project and achieved such a beautiful result. Hadlow Tower is a building many people and organisations gave up on. It means so much to know that this amazing nonsense will be around, and dominating the horizon, for many years to come. “ Julie Beilby, Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s Chief Executive, says: “It is great to see that this wonderful building has at last been restored to its former glory. The Borough Council has been working in close partnership with Vivat and others for many years and is delighted to have played a part in this ambitious project. Congratulations to Vivat and to everyone who has contributed to safeguarding this historic landmark for future generations to admire and enjoy.” The work to restore the tower and create the holiday accommodation, started in February 2011, and cost a total of £4. 2million. Contractors Mansell Construction Services, as well as a number of specialist sub-contractors carried out the works, which include the reinstatement of the pre-cast and moulded decoration, and the missing lantern. Thomas Ford & Partners developed the architectural designs for Vivat. Liam Duffy, Managing Director of Mansell’s London Refurbishment Delivery Unit, says: “We are extremely proud to have used Mansell’s specialist heritage skills in the restoration of Hadlow Tower to create a new and exciting environment within this unique historic monument.” The project has received support from major heritage bodies and funders, including

www.vivat-trust.org

£2.6million from the Heritage Lottery Fund with further funding from English Heritage, the Architectural Heritage Fund, the Country Houses Foundation and the Monument Trust, amongst others. Ian Lush, Chief Executive of the Architectural Heritage Fund, says: “The restoration of Hadlow Tower is very impressive and brings great credit to the Vivat Trust. The Architectural Heritage Fund has been pleased to be involved with this project since its inception and looks forward to continuing its long-standing relationship with the Vivat Trust for its next major undertakings.” Caroline Elcombe from the SAVE Hadlow Tower Action Group, says: “We are truly delighted that Hadlow Tower has been restored so beautifully, the campaign that SHTAG have run over the last 12 years has been worth the work to see this magnificent building once again shining in the sunshine to be admired and enjoyed for years to come.” Inspired by Beckford’s Fonthill Abbey, the Tower was built in 1838, as part of Hadlow Castle, by Walter Barton May who inherited the building project from his father. Built of brick and clad in a roman cement render, the exterior of the tower was originally richly adorned with intricate gothic revival ornamentation made from pre-cast roman cement. Roman cement was developed in Kent in the 1780s. Whilst the tradition of using this material has fallen out of use in this country, it has continued on the continent. Materials for this project were imported from France. In 1951 the tower was saved from demolition by the portrait painter, Bernard Hailstone, while the rest of the castle was dismantled. Following years of neglect, storm damage and controlled down-takings, the tower became an unadorned stump. Enq 331

New LED floodlights cut energy use at schools and sports centres Hoops Basketball Centre reports 80% plus energy saving from new exterior floodlights LED lighting transforms the sports hall at Northern England private school

Ulverston, UK, 12 March 2013. A new range of efficient LED floodlighting from Marl International is providing schools, colleges and sports centres with energy savings of 50-80%, improving the ambiance and cutting maintenance costs too. A basketball club realised even higher energy savings of over 80% after replacing standard SON floodlights with LED floodlights that are not only more efficient but also better directed onto key areas. Marl International Bay Range LED floodlights provide an efficient, flexible light source for interior sports halls and outdoors on sports fields and courts. Energy efficient 772, 773 and 774 series floodlights from the Marl Bay Range have single, double and triple modules for targeted illumination with low light pollution and wastage. In addition to the energy savings, they provide clear white light giving a better ambiance particularly indoors, and a long life of at least 50,000 hours. Marl has recently completed installations of the new floodlights outside at Hoops Basketball Centre, Barrow-in-Furness and indoors in the sports hall at Abbey Gate College in Cheshire. At the Hoops Centre, Marl fitted eight 30W and two 90W floodlights around the outside of the building, replacing twelve 350W SON fixtures. The new fixtures are much more efficient, and better targeted onto the emergency exit routes rather than the surrounding grass. According to Hoops Basketball Centre Manager, Ian France, “The installation gives us an immediate energy saving of over 80%, as well as a reduction in maintenance cost as the new lights need replacing less often. We’re also impressed with the quality of the lights. The security CCTV images are much improved because the LED floodlights are whiter. We are looking at installing an extra light to illuminate the car park.” Commenting on the installation of LED lights inside the sports hall at one of the North of England’s most prestigious independent schools, Abbey Gate College, Cheshire, Business Manager Andrew Bache

said, “The real appeal of Marl LED lights for us is the convenience and improvement in the environment. Though the sodium lights were adequate for football and gymnastics, the hall is also used for examinations and social events. We were able to dramatically increase the light level in the hall, ensuring the corners as well as the central area is brightly lit. The LED lights are much whiter and very much more even, since the output of the sodium lamps degrades noticeably as they age.” In addition to improving the appearance, the new lights offered cost savings in several areas, as Mr Bache explained. “The sodium lights took about 20 minutes to warm up, so were normally left on all day. Now we can just switch them on when we arrive and off when we leave.” Different colour temperatures and optical configurations can be selected for varying light distances and intensities making them an excellent solution for sports halls and arenas, recreational and public areas, marquees, perimeter fencing, gardens and car parks. Motion and dusk to dawn sensors can be integrated and the instant illumination with no warm-up time required saves on unnecessary light-on time. All three floodlights feature robust casing and are fully sealed to IP67 standard for total protection against dust, temporary immersion of water and to safeguard against vandalism, extreme weather conditions and reduce maintenance costs of replacing broken lights. These super bright floodlights use the latest LED technology with a luminous efficacy of 83.3 to 94.2 lumens/Watt from an 110V-27V AC mains supply. With a single module, the 772 Series dimensions are 300 x 93 x 223mm and weighs 2.8kg; the double module 773 Series is 300 x 193 x 253 and weighs 4.7kg; and the triple module 774 Series is 300 x 293 x 253, weighing 6kg.

Thorlux and Sapa Profiles Make a Bright Partnership Thorlux Lighting has designed a new luminaire specifically for industrial and warehouse applications. The new light fitting uses LEDs as the light source as opposed to the conventional sodium, mercury discharge, or fluorescent lamps, as they have a longer life span and therefore have lower maintenance costs. Thorlux’s new product, the SOLOW LED, has a projected 100,000 hour life, compared with the typical 25,000 hours for traditional lamp sources. Because traditional lamps need to be replaced more frequently, associated maintenance costs are increased. To achieve the projected life, Thorlux has designed the luminaire so that every component is operating within critical temperature limits. The new Thorlux light fitting uses aluminium extrusions so the luminaire can be produced in three different lengths. The shortest version is 1.1 metre in length and the longest is 2.1 metres long, uses 136 LEDs and consumes 275 watts. T: 01527 583 200 W: www.thorlux.com Enq. 202

Look On The Bright Side Providing a wider, brighter and shallower fitting, Collingwood Lighting has expanded its Halers LED range with the introduction of its H2 Pro and H2 Lite down lights. The dimmable Halers H2 Pro is 80% brighter than a traditional 50W GU10 halogen fitting and up to 40% brighter on average than an LED GU10 replacement fitting – in fact, Halers H2 Pro boasts the highest ever lumens of 550 from a Collingwood product and is extremely efficient too at 65 lumens per watt. Available in a standard 38° and new 60° lens option, which improves vertical illumination and provides a more uniform spread of light at floor level, Halers H2 Pro can dramatically improve light levels in a room and is available in either a neutral or warm white LED fitting. Due to its wider 60° beam, Halers H2 Pro can also be installed at intervals of 1.6m, compared to 1.2m with a 38° beam. As a result, fewer fittings are required overall, helping to reduce costs, the payback period and speed up installation. For more information visit _ Enq. 204 www.collingwoodlighting.co.uk

Scolmore pioneers next generation in integrated LED Downlights Scolmore has launched what it is describing as the industry’s most sophisticated integrated LED downlight to date – one that will provide contractors and installers with a high light output, high performance product that can be fitted into the shallowest of ceiling voids. Inceptor is a fire-rated, integrated LED downlight with pre-wired driver and flow connector. It combines a number of key features which the company believes sets it apart from competitor products. Unique to Inceptor is the innovative flexi-driver element which means it can be fitted in to a recess depth of just 60mm – making it one of the most flexible fittings currently available. The Flexible Driver Mount which connects the driver to the LED assembly allows the product to be mounted in two configurations – open and closed. The product will come packaged in the closed configuration for standard installation into a ceiling void with a depth of 90mm or more. However, for installations that have shallower ceiling voids (6090mm) the user can unclip and pivot the driver so that it lays flat beside the LED (the open configuration). This means that the driver remains without strain on any electrical connections even when it is positioned remotely. Scolmore has also integrated its popular Flow Connectors into the product, which will make the product quick and easy to install as well as to remove and replace for the purpose of circuit testing. Inceptor incorporates Scolmore’s award-winning FlameGuard® system technology, offers a 90-minute fire rating and is acoustic and airflow compliant. It will be available in dimmable and non-dimmable options, both packing a lot of power into a very compact design and offering Part L Compliance. The product utilises a Luxeon® Rebel chipset, boasts a 400 lumen output, an even spread of light – with a 35° beam angle – and a L70 LED lifetime of up to 80,000 hours. Also unique to Inceptor is the QR (Quick Response) code carried on the product itself, which allows for the technical specification sheets to be downloaded via a smart phone to facilitate the installation and inspection. Marie Parry, marketing manager says: “The advancement in lighting technology is continuing at a fast pace and the market is moving more and more towards products that are not only high performance and energy-saving, but are much more simplistic and therefore quicker and easier to install. What we have done with the Inceptor LED Downlight is to combine the very best of the features and technologies that we have developed over recent years into one high-performance, highly compact design that offers a range of solutions in one.” For further information, contact Scolmore on 01827 63454, or visit www.scolmore.com

Award-winning lighting company is leading the way when it comes to slashing energy usage and lowering carbon emissions. MHA Lighting, based in Greater Manchester, uses two-thirds of the energy of its closest competitors and has developed bespoke light fittings for a variety of clients from both public and private sectors. Most recently, MHA Lighting provided a powerful solution to replace lights at Bournemouth Airport car parks, with their energy efficient P 30 fitting, which is just 67 watts inclusive of ballast. MHA’s installation provides a useful lifetime of 18 years and is able to significantly reduce the airport’s lighting energy consumption from 164,776kWh to just 46,137kWh, ensuring they keep their carbon neutral ground operation status. The new light fittings now installed in two of Bournemouth Airport’s car parks use 72% less energy than the pre-existing system. With the use of intelligent controls the P30 fittings will save the airport an additional 25% on their energy bills by reducing operating hours to nine from 12. The newly installed P30 fittings run maintenance free for the duration of their 60,000-hour lifetime, providing additional savings of over £1,000 per annum, as no

operational maintenance costs will be incurred. How does the technology work? MHA is the only lighting manufacturer to use waveguide technology to shine light sideways into an encapsulation – not directly outwards. This avoids direct contact with the eye and provides a safe and efficient light output. The patented waveguide technology offers distinct advantages over other LED manufacturers as it allows the company to replicate the light quality and uniformity of traditional lighting. MHA also use acrylic rods to amplify and control the light output, reducing the number of LEDs required. This means they can use high power LEDs, draw less current and have no need to diffuse the output. AMPTEAM SOLVE THE LEAKING ROOF PROBLEMS FOR RAYELL, BICESTER.

The original roof and gutter system had overtopped into the building on many occasions due to insufficient numbers of outlets. This problem was likely to become more severe with the use of the Kingspan composite due to the retentive metal surface of the panels and there was no possibility of adding any further outlets due to the design of the roof. Ray Ellingford of Rayell Construction recognised that this was likely to be the case so asked Ampteam to attend site to see what could be achieved by lining the gutter with Unifold. Ampteams survey and subsequent calculations revealed that the outlets were insufficient in all gutter runs. The design submitted by Ampteam gave full consideration to the use of the Kingspan composite which allowed 172 metres of parapet gutters and 200 metres of valley gutters to be increased in depth by over 100mm by projecting the legs of the unifold gutter liner to the underside of the kingspan sheet at the back position. This required that Rayell accurately positioned each roof panel with the tolerance of 30mm in total so that the composite panel

This design treatment when applied to the parapet gutters allowed the front of the Unifold to be fitted over the parapet flashing of the building which meant that any overflow could not under any circumstances enter the building so no further treatment was required to correct these gutters. The parapet gutters capacity were increased by over 60% by treating the gutters in this manner. The gutter legs of the unifold were both fitted to the underside of the Kingspan roof sheet at the cut back position, this increased capacity by nearly 30% and the increase in gutter depth allowed an increase in performance of the outlets by over 90%. This resulted in the outlets at the front of the building running freely but with the outlets at the rear of the building being short on capacity this was corrected by the inclusion of a number of 150mm diameter snorkel overflows fitted between the rear stopend and the outlet and at a calculated height at the sole of the gutter so as to become effective only when required. Water discharge from these was handled by pipe work discharging clear of the building. The resulting installation had a number of advantages apart from correcting the deficiency in drainage capacity as the unifold gutter was not needed until roofing work was well underway and installed after the roof sheets leaving a new gutter at the end of the contract, rather than one trafficked throughout the roofing program and of course the exceptional properties of the Unifold system including its very long life, in excess of 30 years. Rayell were pleased with the outcome as they had been requested to reduce the construction program by some weeks and this second target was achieved.

Sandtoft, a Wienerberger brand, has expanded its industry-leading clay product range with the launch of a number of new clay plain tiles in April 2013.

Wienerberger expands its industry-leading Sandtoft clay roof tile range with the launch of new clay plain tiles

Hot on the heels of the launch of the new Barrow and Alban clay plain tile ranges in 2011, each of the new designs bring a new texture or colour to the already sought after range. The new clay tiles are manufactured at Broomfleet, where Sandtoft has extensive clay reserves formed from the alluvial plain of the river Humber over 10,000 years ago. This abundant natural resource is situated directly alongside the manufacturing site, and has been harnessed for generations to create beautiful and highly durable clay tiles. From recycled foundry sands that are carefully pressed into the tile’s surface during the manufacture, to new finishing techniques which bring brand new muted hues to the clay plain tile, there really is a tile for every roof design in the range. The new tiles have been developed together, but each creates its own look on the roof and offers the specifier, housebuilder or homeowner a range of benefits. The Barrow is aimed at those wanting a traditional handmade appearance at an affordable price. The manufacturing process ensures that a generous application of sand is embedded into every tile to create a rich look characteristic of a true handmade tile. There are five colours to choose from, four of which have been designed to emulate Sandtoft’s award winning Goxhill handmade plain tile. The four includes two brown shades (Dark Oak and Bay Brown), two red colours (the Light and Dark Rusper), the fifth is a bold new colour called Red Basalt. The colours in the range can be used individually on the roof or mixed to create an attractive blend of colours. One of the most popular colour effects is called ‘Barrow Brindle Mix’ which mixes three colours to create a rustic appearance – and one which is ideally suited to heritage building projects. The red colours are also ideal for vertical tile hanging.

The Alban range differs from the Barrow as it combines the look of a reclaimed tile with great value for money. There are also two colour options available. The Sussex Blend features a mix of red, brown and black tones, while the ‘Vintage Blend’ offers striking contrasts of red and black colour. The Okewood tile has also been launched in a new colour: Haze, which is a blend of two colours. The Okewood is a traditional clay plain tile with a smooth finish and looks that are reminiscent of a sanded tile. Finally, Sandtoft is also launching new colours for its award-winning Humber range and handcrafted ridges. Andrew Lawton, Sales Director at Sandtoft, said: “For these new products, we have developed specialist sanding and manufacturing techniques that add real charm and character to a clay plain tile roof while at the same time extending our commitment to using recycled materials. “The range draws upon over 100 years of roofing expertise to meet the increasing demand for affordable clay roof tiles. With a total of five new colours available, Sandtoft now has one of the most extensive and interesting clay plain tile ranges on the market”.

Roofing & Cladding Kemper System Showcases Sustainability At Roofex Kemper System will be amongst the first specialist companies to take advantage of the UK’s only dedicated roofing show when the company exhibits at stand 260, Hall 8 at this year’s inaugural Roofex exhibition at the NEC (1-2 May). Featuring 5000m2 of exhibitors along with live demonstrations, CPD seminars and training workshops, Roofex is free to enter and will provide a major platform for the roofing sector which is a £1.035 billion per annum marketplace. Kemper System will use this forum to showcase its innovative roofing products, including its Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free liquid waterproofing system and its Stratex Warm Roof System. Kemper System’s innovative Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free system was the first solvent-free wet-on-wet cold liquid waterproofing system available on the UK market and remains the only product of its kind. The fume-free system is not only ideal for sustainable new builds but is also perfect for upgrades to occupied buildings as the lack of any nuisance odours means that work can be carried out while the building remains in normal use. Hard-wearing and durable, Kemperol 2K-PUR bonds to almost any substrate to create a totally seamless, monolithic, U/V stable, elastomeric membrane that cannot delaminate. Based on an 80% castor-oil formulation derived from sustainable sources, the liquid system also incorporates a flexible non-woven reinforcement fleece, which is manufactured using a 25% recycled plastic bottle content. Like Kemper System’s solvent-based Kemperol V210 system, Kemperol 2K-PUR is offered with a 20-year warranty and is suitable for application on top of most existing roofing materials. Complementing the sustainability credentials of the Kemperol 2K-PUR system, Kemper System’s Stratex Warm Roof System offers a completely integrated warm roof system that incorporates primers, vapour barrier, insulation and waterproofing with a range of optional surfacing. Featuring a rigid PIR insulation board with a unique tongue and groove interlocking joint, the system significantly reduces cold bridging and gives a much smoother surface finish. Kemper System will also be showcasing the company’s Kempergro Green Roof System at Roofex, a three-section system comprising a reservoir attenuation composite, growing medium and vegetation. The reservoir attenuation layer includes an upper filter fleece, central reservoir core and lower protection fleece, which are manufactured from 90% recycled materials and are factory bonded to maximise performance and simplify installation. Suitable for use with the Kemperol 2K-PUR or Kemperol V210 waterproofing membrane systems, Kempergro has a growing medium that is 100% composed of recycled brick, tiles and green compost, which is processed and graded to support an extensive range of sedum, meadow or lawn roof media. Visitors to Kemper System’s stand will be able to see how each of the systems have been used in practice, including how the Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing membrane and Stratex Warm Roof System have been used together on various high profile projects. There will also be a number of display areas where visitors to the stand will be able to view samples of the cured product to experience first-hand the flexibility and durability it offers. Alu-Timber EFT Curtain Walling

A

fter extensive research and consultation, the next innovation from market leading timber/aluminium facade supplier, Alu-Timber, is now available. Alu-Timber EFT is a 60mm curtain wall system which offers Capped, 2sided Structural Glazing with vertical or horizontal capping, and 4sided Structural Glazing. Design freedom and solutions to modern environmental issues are a complex requirement. Alu-Timber EFT provides thermally efficient Larch timber with time tested aluminium for protection. To maximise spans and centres, a wide range of timber mullions and transoms are available. The inherent properties of timber provide two advantages: high strength as well as low U- values, ensuring our partners can meet the demands of future carbon reduction plans. Form and function meet with the selection of timbers used. As standard, Alu-Timber EFT is available in Larch engineered timber. The inherent density of Larch provides a hard wearing, long lasting solution. Larch also offers aesthetic benefits; grain deepens over time providing a stunning solution. For design flexibility, Alu-Timber offers a palette of timber species. The specifier can select from solid timbers such as Oak

or Ash as well as engineered species such as Pine or Eucalyptus. The external aluminium can be finished in a myriad of polyester powder colours or anodising. AluTimber EFT drew on the knowledge of its sister division Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems, who have over 40 years experience in curtain walling and facade engineering. Alu-Timber EFT passed a weather test. 600Pa, 600Pa,

2400Pa providing reassurance for the specifier and installer . Standard construction of curtain walls relies on spring loaded cleats to attach the transoms to the mullions. We are proud to introduce the unique Alu-Timber EFT magnetic fixing. Not only is the transom supporting the façade vertically but it ensures integrity, security and loading into mullions. The magnetic fixing in effect pulls the transom to the mullion to ensure tightness and security. This fixing assures the specifier of a precise,

secure fit, time after time. Alu-Timber EFT also offers fixing using a traditional spring loaded cleat method. Alu-Timber is part of The Parkside Group Ltd, a British, privately owned company. With this in mind, the construction industry can rely on local supply, support, testing and calculations to meet UK standards and environmental needs. Alu-Timber is available through a Nationwide network of approved Alu-Timber manufacturers and installers and has a Nationwide team of Architectural Advisors that can provide detailing, design advice and NBS clause completion All profiles and materials are kept in stock to ensure our partners can rely on 99% of their orders being fulfilled on their next weekly delivery. This means our partners can supply fast track manufacture and installation to meet ever increasing site deadlines. During the construction process the local supply of profiles and accessories means that replacements and changes to phasing can be seamlessly supplied.
