o. 4 Brabant Court is a remarkable survival of an early eighteenth-century London residence of some size and quality right in the heart of the City of London. this is a part of London which has been subject to so much redevelopment, not least after wartime bombing, that a great deal of historic interest has been lost. Most likely the house was built for a wealthy London mercantile family, the Lettens (sometimes Lettons), who certainly owned the site, employing independent carpenters and bricklayers (the house, like so many of its date, is in essence a timber and brick structure). It is built in the elegant Anglo-Classical style of the London terraced house of the day, still very much under the influence of the work associated with Wren and the office of the King’s Works. they had set the style for so much work in the City after the Great Fire, with the newly popular sash window adding a visual openness and brightness. the wider history of the area will be considered below, but it is important to note that a house of this status being constructed within a private court, was not untypical for the post-Great-Fire redevelopments. Private prestige houses naturally tended to be built off the main thoroughfares; this insulated them from the noise and activity of the street, and this echoes the building of urban palaces in Italian cities, often still approached today
through busy market streets. There was considerable disappointment among some quarters that the great vision of Wren for a new formal city had not been followed; nonetheless, the simple classicism and regularity of the brick terraces, and larger public buildings, brought considerable conformity and regularity to the streets and squares of London at this time. Daniel Defoe in A Tour of the Whole Island of Great Britain, published in the 1720s wrote of: New squares and new streets rising up every day to such a prodigy of buildings, which nothing in the world does, or ever did, equal it, except old Rome in Trajan’s time’. Enough architecture of interest survives along Philpot Lane to hint, as is shown in eighteenthcentury maps, that the street was once made up of fine residences of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. Brabant Court itself seems to be a post-Great-Fire creation - it can be clearly seen in maps of the 1670s and 80s, drawn up by Ogilby and Morgan. It never seems to have had more than four or five buildings on it, although the space behind the (apparently nineteenth-century) ironwork gates today seems to have been linked with St Benet’s Court which may formerly have linked Brabant Court to St Benet’s Passage and on to Grace Church Street.
N
o. 4 Brabant Court, though it has been used as offices throughout much of the nineteenth century and all of the twentieth century, in large part also thanks to recent sympathetic work retains an entirely domestic plan. It has an exceptionally fine 1720s staircase, with three turned balusters to each tread, with a carved scroll to each rise. The L-shaped plan of the house encloses the staircase well to one side, lit by a window into a light-well; the position of the staircase allows for larger rooms on the ground and first-floor. There seem to have been three rooms on each floor, the two larger presumably always interconnecting through doors). The panelling (wainscot) is largely original on the first two floors, as these would have been of equal status in the 1720s, indeed the first floor rooms would have been the more significant rooms of reception (parlours). The wainscot is divided into the proportions familiar in late seventeenthcentury interiors, namely following the proportions of the column, with base, column and capital reflected in the divisions of the panelling, which has been recently repaired after institutional and office use, though the original irregularities have been wisely preserved. The panelling on the third floor is simpler. There is a basement floor which would have housed the original kitchen and servants’ rooms and further domestic offices and stores (including a wine cellar). While much original joinery and wainscot had survived at No 4 Brabant Court, the present overall quality of these interiors is the result of the well-judged recent restoration by Damien D’Arcy working with specialist interior consultant Jackie McWeeney, removing all trace of the longstanding office uses. The return of a City house to a single residence on this scale is something of a rarity in London, and has been achieved with the advantages of much new technology. While every effort has been made to preserve what was largely the original layout of the house, the standards of the utility and comfort throughout is thoroughly modern. The ground floor kitchen is designed like a modern family kitchen room, open to a sitting room area, but it specified to chef standard for catered events. The dining room is open to the drawing room on the first floor. Wood burning stoves have been installed into the main rooms of reception, and a fine collection of sporting art hung on the walls. Bathrooms have new marble floors. Throughout the house, paint colours are from the Farrow and Ball range and the furniture upholstered with printed fabrics from Fermoie. A new wine cellar has been fitted into the old vaulted cellar space with slate shelving. No. 4 Brabant Court is a very rare survival of those elegant City residences which were built for and occupied by the energetic and wealthy class of City merchants and lawyers, from the postGreat-Fire period onwards. A good example of a high-status brick terrace of the same dates a little west of the City is that at Great James Street, off Theobalds Road, an area long dominated by lawyers and politicians. A number of fine terraces of this period can be encountered in the various of Inns of Court. Such houses were still plentiful in the early nineteenth-century London, but in the heart of the City were often demolished and rebuilt as demand for offices grew exponentially, unlike the less affluent fringe only walking distance to the east, in Spitalfields, which were also built to a similar good standard for wealthy merchants and manufacturers, but sank in status, and were used as ‘rag-trade’ workshops. Sylglas Metalfix Protects Sea Front Railings
Get a good renovation insurance policy
Citadel invests in multidisciplinary future
Hartlepool Borough Council were recently experiencing problems with corrosion of the sea front railings. The railings were exhibiting signs of rusting within a few months of applying a coating system.
Renovating a house can be a relatively cheap way of getting a house tailor made to your needs and style. Not only may you install a new bathroom and kitchen and decorate it to your choosing, but you may extend it as well. With this in mind, you need to budget for some insurance in case anything goes wrong with your project. Most people will either ask their bank or car insurer for a quotation and will have a shock to be told that you cannot insure a house which is being renovated. A good renovation insurance policy will cover: ! New building works and materials ! Plant tools and equipment (including hired in) ! Site hutsand temporary buildings (including caravans) ! Existing structure (ie the house itself) ! Public liability ! Employers Liability ! Legal expenses Don't forget that you need your cover to be in place as soon as you buy your land or plot, and for your protection to continue right up to completion of your project..

The Council called in Universal Coatings & Services Ltd of Port Clarence, Middlesbrough, who could see that the cause was due to sea water entering the steel work at the joints. To overcome this problem Universal Coatings & Services approached Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd for advice. After removing any loose coating and preparing the surface by hand, Universal Coatings applied Winn & Coales’ Sylglas Metalfix to seal the joint. Armstrong Atelier
Tops A World-Class Study Space

espoke wall and ceiling panels from Armstrong Atelier feature 24/7 at the University of Manchester.
A new world-class, 21st Century, 24/7 study space at The University of Manchester features the first use in the UK of Armstrong Atelier’s hook-on metal wall panels. Perforated WH-1000 tiles feature on the top half and plain WH-1000 tiles feature on the bottom half of the vertical elements of the balcony floors lining the four-storey atrium at the £24milion Alan Gilbert Learning Commons. These are linked to a series of bespoke and demountable T-Clip F metal perforated ceiling planks by Armstrong’s metal atrium upstands in 80% gloss and transition bulkheads in a variety of colours. Some of the planks in communal areas on the first and second floors feature an acoustic fleece, others 80% gloss to maximise light reflectance, A total of 1,500m² were installed on the 5,614m² redevelopment, which has achieved a BREEAM HE Excellent rating, over nine months by a team of 30 from Armstrong-approved Omega specialist sub-contractor Sound Interiors for main contractor Wates Construction.
Designed by architects Sheppard Robson and managed by the University Library, the Learning Commons building boasts more than 1,000 flexible study spaces and an inspiring range of equipment and furnishings for individual and group study. There are 400 PCs, laptop charging lockers, 30 bookable group study rooms, Skype area and media screens for presentation and group work. The wifi available throughout the building extends to the space outside and to the groundfloor café which is open to the public. Sheppard Robson’s Jimi Estévez said: “The Armstrong systems offer concealment to services and provide considerable acoustic attenuation. They also reflect natural light deep into the building section due to the high gloss finish to the vertical panels in the atrium. “They offer a clean, homogenous and seamless installation across different systems while catering for substantially different performance criteria on the various locations, from challenging open area ratios for ventilation to demanding acoustic performance and light reflectance values.
“The comprehensive systems Armstrong offers cater for all possible interfaces between their own systems and other common building components such as plasterboard or standard panelling systems.” He added: “Armstrong is a well-known brand which we are well aware of and familiar with but in this instance the contractor brought them to the table on a design and build contract due to the commercial benefits their systems offered to the construction process and programme.” Sound Interiors’ Graham Flynn said: “This project was completely unique as it comprised a multitude of different bespoke products enabling horizontal to vertical transition.” The Learning Commons concept was first developed in the US and Australia to describe a building where students could get together and learn, either on an individual basis or by working collaboratively in groups.

Coatings, Sealants & Paints Problem solving paints to the rescue – Anti-condensation paint and Anti-damp Paint. Problem solving paints to the rescue – Anti-condensation paint and Anti-damp Paint. Condensation and damp are common and regular problems which can lead to the formation of unsightly mould. Condensation is formed when moisture held in warm air hits a cold surface which turns it back into water. Coo-Var Anti-condensation paint is a white, water based coating which is especially effective in rooms prone to airborne moisture such as bathrooms, wet rooms, communal shower/changing rooms and kitchens etc. The specialist coating contains a biocide to reduce discolouration. The paint is durable enough to be left as a finish (but is slightly textured) or overcoated. Damp can cause smells as well as stains and in bad cases, respiratory illness. There is then of course the physical damage to surfaces. You should always investigate the cause persistent damp and if possible fix it before using an anti-damp paint. Coo-Var Antidamp Paint is a smooth white primer for interior damp walls and ceilings. Ideal for underground rooms such as cellars or attics and lofts. It can be
applied to surfaces that are still damp. The coating contains an active reagent which combines with surface moisture and dampness (but will not cure the causes of the damp). Geoff Mackrill, MD of Coo-Var comments: “We have developed these functional coating to meet a growing demand. These are welcome additions to our range of specialist coatings.” In addition to these two products which are available now, Coo-Var are also preparing to launch another brand new product within the next few months. Thermal-Act Warm Wall will be a thermally insulating paint. More details will be announced in the coming months. To be the first to hear about it, follow Coo-Var on Facebook or Twitter or check the news page on our website www.coo-var.co.uk. There are 7 ranges of Coo-Var products, each with their own colour which is reflected on the tin labels. This system enables customers to go to the correct range just by looking at the colour code. For example, if they need a floor paint they only have to look at the red range which ensures an easier customer experience.

Coatings, Sealants & Paints Beauty Make-Over Treatment from Remmers
ISO-Chemie tape seals it at new Bath technology college
The Beauty Shop in Huddersfield required an upgrade to the flooring of the ground-floor treatment and tanning rooms. Although the existing floor was still in relatively good condition, the Salon required a change to the original colour scheme and selected a two coloured Remmers Colorid Flake system to be installed throughout. The revamp also required a corresponding darker floor to be installed in the tanning room due to the nature of the treatments.
ISO-Chemie's high performance expanding foam sealing tape has been specified for an innovative low carbon technology college in Bath. The ISO BLOCO One tape has been specified to provide a high performance airtight, acoustic and thermal interior and exterior seal between the ModCell速 straw-filled, cassette-style prefabricated panels used in the construction of the new two storey 1,200 sq m Nucleus building teaching block at the Hayesfield Girls' School.
All of the floor areas were initially prepared; base coated with Epoxy BS3000 and then flaked with Colorid. All areas were then sealed with Epoxy UV 100 and two coats of Remmers PUR Aqua Top M to create the specified colours and design.
Sustainability was a key driver of the project, which demonstrates the benefits of the straw bale cladding system to eliminate the need for a separate structural frame and increase the speed of build on site through off-site pre-fabrication methods
The works were completed with minimal disruption, meaning the Beauty Shop was quickly able to re-open for business. Remmers (UK) Limited Tel: 0845 373 0103 Fax: 0845 373 0104 Website: www.remmers.co.uk

Manor House Stables Friday April 5th 1946, on a beautifully clear Spring afternoon crowds cheered as the 25/1 racehorse, “Lovely Cottage”, strode triumphantly past the finishing post to be crowned winner of the Grand National, the UKs largest horse race. Trained by Tommy Rayson and ridden by Captain Robert Petre at the first true Aintree Grand National race since 1940, after the Second World War, and the last to take place on a Friday, which had been the tradition since 1876.
That weekend “Lovely Cottage” returned home to the small village of Headbourne Worthy, near Winchester. He received a hero’s welcome before settling in for a well-earned rest in the stables at the Manor House where he was housed. These stables, that were once beautiful and functioning have since remained unused and have fallen into a state of dilapidation.
ortunately, this Grade 2 listed stable block, steeped in poignant historical character and narrative was not forgotten. It has been transformed into an elegant and contemporary 3 bedroom family home by RIBA award winning architects AR Design Studio.
F
Practice Director, Andy Ramus, discovered this piece of overlooked historical heritage while undertaking a large scale refurbishment at the Manor House and immediately recognised its potential. The team at AR could see past its existing rundown state. There was a clear potential to create a sophisticated, contemporary family home within the historical context of the building and the picturesque Hampshire countryside. The history and character of the Stable’s was very much a driving force in design and there is a firm belief at AR Design Studio that design constraints and restrictions can often create the most interesting solutions. The concept was to preserve the existing while making any new additions simple and pure in order to let the original character shine. This results in an innovative arrangement of spaces according to the Stable’s existing layout, in order to maintain many of the existing exposed timber interior walls. These were then cleaned, stripped back and refurbished to reveal an exquisite amount of detailing and craftsmanship. With the existing internal walls brought back to life, the next task was to turn the Stables into a home for the modern family and bring it into the present day. In order to respect the character of the property a clean, contemporary and neutral approach was taken to the rest of the renovation which juxtaposes perfectly with the original timber walls, allowing them to stand out as pieces of art against a beautifully simple contemporary backdrop. Many of the existing features were refurbished and re-purposed for use in the home environment; the original horse troughs were cleaned and converted for use as sink basins, the old horse ties act as towel rings in the bathrooms and original doors are preserved where possible to give a sense of real period character. The Stables benefits from 3 large double bedrooms, with 2 en suite rooms to accompany a spacious family bathroom. Being a single storey property with long continuous views, the layout was tailored and split between sleeping and living accommodation with a single constant circulation running through the entire building. The welcoming and spacious open-plan kitchen dining area is conveniently located at the heart of the home, leading into the light and roomy lounge which benefits from full height glazed doors that open out onto the sleepy village setting. The entire property is super insulated, and the heated polished concrete floor throughout provides a functional uniformity to the spaces as well as recounting the Stable’s agricultural history. New windows and roof lights fitted throughout give the whole place a warm, bright and clean feel; creating an excellent environment as a backdrop for a family home. The finished Stables is completely transformed from its existing dilapidated condition and is now a perfectly working family home, bursting with contemporary style juxtaposed against delightful period character.

PDS open doors for new youth centre and library
Bowater produces high-end read for door ranges
Performance Doorset Solutions (PDS) have recently supplied 34 of their Oak veneer fire doors and frames for a new library and Youth Connexions facility in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.
Bowater Doors – one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of energy-efficient composite doors and a company of the VEKA UK Group – has boosted its marketing support for fabricators and installers with a number of comprehensive and detailed brochures that outline the benefits homeowners can gain through fitting a Bowater composite door.
The brief for the library project required the doors to incorporate glazed fanlights which adhered to fire regulations, as well as specifically designing the doorframes to fit into a variety of unusual opening spaces. It was also essential for the doors to fit in with the overall aesthetics and modern design of the building. PDS internal fire doors are FD30 and FD60 rated and are available in single and double leaf doors. As with all PDS products these doors are made to order, which meant that they were able to manufacture each door and frame to ensure that they met the brief and were the perfect fit for the unusual doorways. Increase space in the home In light of recent research from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) which says a lack of space is one of the main causes of dissatisfaction with the home, P C Henderson offers advice to help projects gain vital space through the specification of cleverly designed sliding door gear systems. P C Henderson’s solutions can increase the interior floor space available by the use of sliding door gear systems which provide an easy access solution that is versatile and silent in use. They can be used as room dividers to create a flexible living space as well as for wardrobe doors which helps create space and allow more light into a property by opening up rooms.
In addition, pocket doors glide neatly into the wall cavity to provide a modern aesthetic for dividing rooms or for use with en-suite bathrooms and cupboard doors. With these options, space is created in contrast to a swing door which impacts on the room once opened. In a house with ten 3ft internal doors, up to an additional 70sq ft of usable space can be released in the home by eliminating the room needed for it to swing and function.
We offer a solution wherever a sliding or folding door can work.” Versatile and silent, the Husky 50kg and 100kg sliding door systems are ideal for wardrobe doors and room dividers. Tracks are now available in galvanised steel, aluminum or anodised aluminum, coupled with nylon rollers, Husky provides a low maintenance, durable, high quality solution.
Andrew Royle, UK Commercial Director at PC Henderson commented: “We’ve been manufacturing sliding door gear systems for over 90 years in the UK now and our British engineered designs offer builders the right combination of high performance and space saving solutions ideal for both new build and refurbishment projects which are very easy to install . Being clever with the space available is key to creating a comfortable home to live in. “Our sliding and folding door hardware systems are perfect for saving space, maximising door opening widths, adjusting room sizes and increasing safety by removing an intrusive swing door.

‘Every little helps’ with Tesco transformation
Extended range of Enviro linear air pumps
A cast iron foundry in Fareham, Hampshire, previously belonging to iron technology leader Saint-Gobain PAM UK, part of leading materials group Saint-Gobain, has risen from the ashes into a Tesco Supermarket, incorporating a car park using Saint-Gobain PAM UK’s market-leading Ensign soil brand. The cast iron foundry that originally occupied the site was operated by Glynwed Brickhouse, prior to Saint-Gobain PAM UK acquiring the facility. It has since been transformed into a 49,300 sq.ft. Tesco store. The key reason Ensign system was specified was because this fit-and-forget system is regarded as the most versatile cast iron system on the market – offering significant performance benefits over other materials – and provides the complete drainage solution to a project’s needs. Charles Austen Pumps extends its range of Enviro linear air pumps to include the new ET250 and ET300 pumps. Using the same proven technology of the ET series these new pumps combine two units into one casing to produce exceptionally high flow rates even on deeper systems. They are designed for domestic sewage treatment systems where residents are not able to connect to mains drainage. Alternatively they are suitable for large ponds and lake aeration. Offering exceptionally high flow the new pump sizes eliminate the need for multiple pumps on larger tank installations and prove ideal as replacements for noisy rotary vane pumps or expensive side channel blowers. Other applications include electroplating baths, biofuel production, whirpools and aquaculture. For further information please contact visit – www.charlesausten.com

Dales Fabrications supply English Heritage-commended design by Cassidy + Ashton Dales Fabrications, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of aluminium eaves products, has been specified by Cassidy + Ashton to its English Heritage-commended Stonyhurst College project. Tasked with creating a refectory which made a visual statement, the design also had to deliver an exceptional environment for pupils to relax in. Dales Fabrications’ elliptical fascia with secret fix soffit panel system, rainwater pipe and elliptical Brise Soleil solar blades, were specified, the first time the sleek 260mm solar blades have been used in application. Dales’ solar shade systems are carefully designed to reduce the impact of solar gain and heat, without impeding the clear benefits of ‘natural light’. Weather resistant, easy to maintain, entirely recyclable, and extremely cost effective, Dales Brise Soleil solar shade and aluminium solutions are ideally suited and proving popular for education sector projects.
Initially created to meet the 21st century needs of pupils, the recently unveiled dining refectory at Stonyhurst College has exceeded all expectations. Attentively designed, the refectory perfectly showcases Cassidy + Ashton’s ability to create a building which is both contemporary and entirely sympathetic to its Grade 1 heritage surroundings. It also demonstrates how intelligent modern solutions can be seamlessly incorporated into virtually any design, with impressive effect. Frank McCabe, Senior Chartered Architectural Technologist at Cassidy + Ashton, comments: “Cassidy + Ashton Group Ltd has worked successfully with Dales on many projects. The Refectory building at the historic Stonyhurst College site presented many challenges in delivering a modern building; surrounded by listed buildings, however the use of sympathetic materials in the design, along with implementation of Dales’ solar shades, and elliptical fascia with
secret fix soffit systems, to create clean roof line profiles, all helped to achieve this successfully”. Aesthetically impressive, the combination of gleaming structural steel work, Dales’ elliptical solar blades and aluminium fascia, natural yellow sandstone, and slate elements of the build is simply stunning. Each element combines to blend heritage charm and contemporary appeal flawlessly. The smooth, curved lines of the building were complemented by Dales secret fix fascia and soffit panels, creating a clean, contemporary roof line. Headmaster Andrew Johnson is thrilled with the outcome; “We are absolutely delighted with this beautiful new facility, which will enhance the lives of all our pupils. I particularly like the wonderful views across the ponds to the grounds beyond.”
www.dales-eaves.co.uk
E
nglish Heritage, which was in consultation with Cassidy + Ashton and Globe Construction (project builder) throughout, commended the design, describing the refectory as, “…quietly modern standing as an obvious addition to the complex, without competing with the more historical elements.”
Enq 314
Stonyhurst’s catering manager, Barbara Church-Taylor, said: “The new refectory is absolutely wonderful and we feel very privileged to have such a stunning facility. The first day has gone extremely smoothly and the pupils are clearly delighted with it too; it has exceeded our expectations!” Pupils commented that they liked the increased space and light, and the much reduced queue at the servery.

Yorkshire Housing recently specified Forbo’s Novilon cushioned vinyl products for kitchens and bathrooms as part of a refurbishment project to ensure that its 20-property social housing scheme met the Decent Homes Standard. The comprehensive portfolio of styles and designs available met the housing provider’s aesthetic needs whilst Novilon’s Diamond Seal and Noviclean features, which help guard against scratches and scuff marks, met requirements for easy cleaning, low maintenance and long term durability. A selection of designs were specified from the contemporary Novilon Viva and Viva Fusion ranges, which comprise a sophisticated mixture of metallic tiles and modern style wood effects. Novilon’s Aquagrip lacquer, delivering R10 slip resistance, provided Yorkshire Housing and its tenants with peace of
mind, reducing potential slip and trip hazards. “We were thoroughly impressed with Forbo’s range of colours and designs,” said Andy Kelham, Investment Programme Manager at Yorkshire Housing. “With the investment being made in the refurbishment, it was critical to specify floor coverings that would have long lasting performance as well as being hardwearing and easy to maintain - and the Novilon products easily met these needs.” Ian Godwin of Able Bathing also commented on the installation: “Novilon was stress-free to install thanks to its flexibility, which made it easy to manoeuvre around spaces of all sizes, and it was easy to cut on site. This made an impact on the refurbishment schedule, meaning that all floors were finished on time - resulting in happy tenants.”

Conserving fuel and the environment at Pensychnant A conservation centre and nature reserve has come full circle after installing an energy efficient biomass boiler from Windhager UK. Pensychnant House and Estate, Conwy, was designed by the Stott family, architects of the Lancashire Cotton Mills. Incorporating a central heating system at the time of its building, the nineteenth century house was well ahead of its time. Now, the decision to install a Windhager wood pellet boiler brings Pensychnant once again to the forefront of heating technologies. The use of a carbon-neutral biomass boiler is in sympathy with the ethos of the charity and contributes to the aim of sustainability at Pensychnant. The Windhager boiler, is expected to generate 90,000kWh of heat per year, now maintains a constant and comfortable temperature throughout the centre For further information visit – www.windhager.co.uk

Sail and Galileo Chairs
Across the world the great families of class and distinction have grown up with Peter Reed products. Our range of luxury bedding have been sold in some of the most prestigious stores in the world, including Harrods, for many years.
In the world of workplace design, wellbeing, posture and ergonomics are now high on the agenda. They have become the number-one selling point for seating manufacturers.
We invite you to run your fingers gently across our bed linen next time you see a Peter Reed product. You will feel the beautifully crafted texture of our finest cotton linen, which includes thread counts up to 1000 per square inch. Only through years of knowledge and experience can we produce products of such quality.
Current ergonomic thinking is starting to challenge the popular belief that sitting upright is best for your spine. The latter has carried out extensive research into the many theories of ergonomists.
You can be sure that with your Peter Reed luxury linens you are buying the finest materials woven at the very highest standards.
These findings have resulted in the Grammer range, that exclusively incorporate a new patented mechanism, Glide-Tec. Not only do the chairs change the way we sit, they combine current ergonomic theories with contemporary style.

Quinn’s Round Top and Compact radiators incorporate all aspects of the HqO technology and have been rebranded as the Hi Lo to reflect the fact they are the most efficient panel radiators on the market, with the highest heat output and lowest water content. There are two radiators in the Hi Lo range, the Hi Lo Round Top and the Hi Lo Compact; both are available for order. For more information visit www.quinn-radiators.com

30 Metre Glass Sculpture Lit By
Sill Led Projectors
The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in health by supporting the brightest minds. Its headquarters is the inspiring and beautifully maintained Gibbs Building in London’s Euston Road, designed by Hopkins Architects in 2004. At the western end of the atrium is the stunning Bleigiessen sculpture. Its fluid, cascading form of 142,000 glass spheres suspended along steel wires, represents the intriguing pattern created by dropping molten lead into water. Eric Maddock specified Sill Lighting UK for the original metal halide scheme to light both the atrium and sculpture in 2004. However both have now been replaced by an energy and maintenance saving LED solution, again by Sill UK. The lighting design accentuates the undulating form of the sculpture, complementing the architecture that surrounds it. This stunning effect is enhanced by Sill’s projectors, which penetrate the wires and emphasise the shifting colours and brightness within the glass. The sophisticated lighting causes the spheres to disappear into darkness and reappear, increasing the expressiveness and complexity of the sculpture. Sill’s 141 and 140 high efficiency projectors, with warm white LEDs, replace previous Sill metal halide fittings in the atrium. Both fittings are also used to accent light the Bleigiessen, but here neutral white LEDs are used to achieve the strongest aesthetic effect. Using LED replacement light fittings with 0-10V dimmable control options has cut energy consumption by over 60% in the Gibbs building. The projectors in the nine-storey atrium require specialist rope access, and the longevity of the new Sill LED fittings will ensure that maintenance requirements are minimal. Alan Aldridge, section head of building services at the Wellcome Trust, comments, “In the context of lighting a sculpture and atrium of this size and complexity, it was an essential requirement for this project to complement and enhance the existing architectural aspects of the building. The Sill LED product enabled the Trust to meet these key criteria, at the same time as contributing towards its environmental goals. It is definitely a win-win situation for the Trust.” Project operations manager Matt Thomas explains further, “We were looking for an LED fitting that would provide us with energy savings and also a reduction in maintenance costs. Whilst most fittings could provide the energy and maintenance savings, the Sill luminaire was the only one whose design we considered to be on a par with the other fixtures and fittings within our building. The company also provided lamp temperature options that most others didn’t.” The flexibility, efficiency and reliability of Sill’s LED system confirmed its specification for the reillumination of the Bleigiessen. The new lighting solution corresponds with the original fittings, using identical brackets to ensure the smooth transition from the old system to the new. The LED technology’s energy savings reflects the Wellcome Trust’s green credentials. Sill Lighting is a market leader in developing LED and high performance metal halide projector systems that provide sustainable solutions to often complex lighting requirements. The company produces the highest quality in optics and thermal engineering using environmentally friendly materials and offers specifiers and users bespoke and adaptable lighting systems.

Traditional Metal Roofing Specialists Recognised by CSCS Laying down a significant marker for their trade, roofing specialists in traditional hard metals (copper, stainless steel and zinc) now have their own Traditional / Heritage Roofing CSCS card. Launched on the 1st June 2013, the Traditional / Heritage Roofing – Hard Metals CSCS card will identify those craftsmen experienced in traditional metal roofing design and installation. Following in the footsteps of a similar card created to identify experienced specialist leadworkers, the Traditional / Heritage hard metals card will have a Managed Industry Accreditation (“Grandfather Rights”) period of twelve months, during which any suitably experienced metal roofing contractor can apply to be issued with the card. At the end of twelve months (i.e. 31st May 2014) this route will be closed and then applicants will need an NVQ3 in heritage metal roofing or have to undergo a practical / theory assessment process in order to get their card. Although Managed
whilst available the Industry Accreditation
route will be a cheaper and more convenient process in getting the card, they will not just be simply given away to every applicant. The purpose of the card is to identify roofing contractors experienced in traditional / heritage metal roofing and separate them from the many other contractors involved in the industry that have neither the experience nor the appropriate skills in this specialist sector. This will in turn enable clients and specifiers to regard the Traditional / Heritage Roofing cardholders as having the skills and experience they require when looking to deliver a traditional building project. All applicants will therefore be required to provide information on their background and experience, supported by photographs of their work and referees, which will be processed through the Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors who are working in partnership with CSCS in this initiative. FTMRC see this development as a significant next step in their efforts to raise quality
standards in the metal roofing sector. Applications made direct to CSCS will simply be referred back to the FTMRC, in an effort to ensure that only those contractors with the appropriate skills and competence are issued with the card. Applicants will need to have passed the CITB Health & Safety (Working at Heights) test within the last two years to have their application approved. Further details and application forms are available from the FTMRC (info@ftmrc.co.uk) telephone 01342 301627 Significant client endorsement for the leadworkers card has recently come in the form of the announcement from English Heritage that the upcoming Audley End project will include a specification that only holders of the Heritage Skills Specialist Leadworker card will be considered for the substantial lead installation work required and it is hoped the hard metals card will quickly receive the same level of status and credibility among the major heritage and traditional roofing client groups.

The three-storey podium of a 1960s office block in Glasgow was recently reclad with ceramic granite ventilated cladding as part of a £27.5m project to convert the building into a Premier Inn hotel.

building protection, comparing very favourably with traditional cladding materials, reducing loadings on the substructure and building, and making life easier for the installation team. Overall, the costs of procurement, prefabrication and installation of a ceramic granite ventilated façade are significantly less than for a quarried stone construction.
Ventilated cladding can extend a building’s life expectancy by decades. It also allows for highly effective thermal and acoustic insulation to be installed on exterior walls. From the massive range of different façade materials available, ceramic granite is an increasingly popular choice amongst specifiers looking for a premium quality finish at an affordable price.
Impermeable With almost zero porosity, ceramic granite conforms to all international freeze/thaw resistance standards and façade panels are totally resistant to airborne pollution and algae growth and most acids and alkalis. Because of its impermeability and through-body colouration, patterns and graining, its appearance will not fade, however extreme the weather and UV light exposure.
What is ceramic granite? A fully vitrified precision engineered material, ceramic granite is made entirely from natural materials - refined clays, quartz, feldspars and metal oxides - pressed into large format slabs at extremely high pressures and fired at 1260°C, without the use of bonding agents. The resulting material which can be supplied in a myriad of different styles, colours and finishes. Superior strength and hardness Ceramic granite is exceptionally hardwearing (up to 8 on the Mohs scale) and superior in strength and performance to any ‘natural’ stone. Without the flaws and weak points inherent in many quarried materials, façade panels of just 12mm thickness, (approx 25kg/m2), offer outstanding
Off-site prefabrication Shackerley’s ceramic granite façade panels are supplied in prefabricated format, for use with the patented Queen’s Award winning Sureclad ventilated façade system which employs a special undercut anchoring system to provide a safe, secure and stress free fix. The system is fully compliant with CWCT standards for systemised building envelopes and NHBC technical requirements. At our ISO 9001 quality accredited production facilities in Lancashire we offer the complete range of specialist prefabrication services required to transform large format ceramic
granite slabs into ‘installation-ready’ ventilated façade panels. We also offer a comprehensive planning and design service and can provide expert advice at every stage during the specification, design and installation process. Specified by the country’s leading architectural practices, Sureclad ceramic granite façades are enhancing the appearance and environmental credentials of new and refurbished buildings in every sector, from hospital buildings, hotels and university facilities to commercial office developments, large retail complexes and residential housing schemes. Safety & Security The original just got better Aico Radioline wire free alarm interconnection system upgraded Aico, one of the UK's leading suppliers of domestic mains powered Fire and Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms, is pleased to announce its market-leading RadioLINK Professional wireless interconnection technology has been upgraded to feature remote House Code entry and the ability to add full control to mixed (or 'hybrid') hard-wired and RF systems. RadioLINK works by allowing Aico Multi-Sensor, Smoke, Heat and CarbonMonoxide (CO) alarms to be wirelessly interconnected by Radio Frequency (RF) signals, rather than cabling. If one alarm on the system is triggered, RF signals cause every other alarm on that system to sound, providing the earliest warning to the building's occupants. Because there is no need to run interconnect cabling between the alarms and lift floorboards, chase cables or fit trunking, RadioLINK saves time and disruption when installing systems in existing properties. RadioLINK has now been further enhanced to allow for Remote House Code entry, which can save time and get over access issues when installing smoke alarms into HMOs and flats. In addition, the upgrade to the RadioLINK base now enables installers to addcontrol to mixed (or 'hybrid') hard-wired and RF systems. Simplicity itself, all that is required to achieve this is replacing a single base on the hard-wired system with a new RadioLINK base. For more
