A WELLCRAFTED DRAMA

Milan Highlights by Staffan Tollg책rd

15 Milan is a great place to take the temperature of the design world. It’s ten years since my first trip, and a decade of going to this incredible fair has afforded me a good view of the importance it holds for our industry and what it tells us about ourselves. This year seemed to me to be busier than last year with people packed onto the stands and Milan’s streets in equal measure. The mood was positive, perhaps not overly optimistic about the run up to Brexit, but positive about how business feels right now. I trained originally to be a film-maker, and I was struck by the similarly between the two industries this year. The best stands created individual and immersive worlds to escape into, more of a theatrical experience, less of a trade fair when done well. Moooi, Ceccotti, Stellarworks and Diesel were perfect examples of brands whose stands really told their stories well. More and more furniture houses are turning to bankable design stars - the celebrities of our industry - highlighting the importance of these stellar brands in adding kudos to the some of the biggest manufacturers. And the retelling of stories, or the repackaging of the most successful ones is another trend that Milan and Hollywood certainly share.

SHOW-STOPPERS Dramatic single pieces that stole the show for me included the aptly named Rideau from Emmemomibili. Technically complex and visually striking, this large cabinet effortlessly slides open to reveal its function. The intriguing Galileo mirror from Living Divani spoke at once to the decorator and engineer in me. Its simple golden lines beckoned the viewer closer to find out just how it was supported and constructed. The beautifully curved console from De Castelli softened their metal offering, showing a much more decorative side to their architectural collection.

Opposite page: The Valet collection, designed by David Rockwell for Stellarworks; This page clockwise from top: Rideau by Emmemobili; Perch Light by Moooi; Galileo mirror by Living Divani and Mosaico sideboard from De Castelli

16

WORKSHOP CHIC Craftsmanship is still one of the strongest stories in the design world, and one of my personal favourites. This year saw craft interpreted across the continents; showing just how relevant traditional modes of furniture-making are in the right design hands. KBH, from Copenhagen made a dramatic impact in Wallpaper’s Handmade stand. Their back-story is the stuff of film: led by an ex-rocker who turned from guitarmaking to furniture-making, they are a small collective of Danish furniture master craftsmen and designers with a shamelessly Nordic aesthetic and process. They even forage for their own wood. This year they launch a classic collection of their best pieces at our Design Store, bringing their Nordic flavour to London and an international audience.

Clockwise: KBH Chair; KBH leather hand stitched seating pads; The Valet bar cart from Stellarworks; KBH New Classics Collection

Craft at its most luxurious: Ceccotti’s Peggy bench

Stellarworks produced a visually and functionally strong collection with Valet by David Rockwell. The cinematic 1970s staging further emphasised the strong American narrative of the collection with its ingredients of craftsmanship, full-grain saddle leather, American walnut, black steel and brushed brass.

17

SEQUELS SPELL SUCCESS Another parallel with show business is the challenge that our industry faces to find and tell truly new stories. They are few and far between in Hollywood, and the new stories are often not the commercial hits: it is the sequels that promise an instant hit of a tried-and-trusted formula with recognisable stars and an easy to digest experience. Some of the strongest brands ensure success through their enduring narratives and design direction. Meridiani’s longstanding design director Andrea Parisio; Living Divani and Porro’s inimitable Piero Lissoni; Flexform’s Roberto Lazzeroni; Moooi’s Marcel Wanders: their firm hand was visible in each of the stands. Ceccotti created a world firmly based in the past, a Downton-esque stately home that reflected their pedigree.

At Porro I particularly enjoyed the architectural lines of Gallery, a cabinet that slides apart vertically to reveal a lit bar that can be dimmed down through the colour temperature spectrum. Though a new piece, it is unmistakably Porro. Meridiani impressed through their strong stand that transported us to a villa somewhere in the Mediterranean. I loved their armchair and bed derived from the Keaton family. Moooi’s theatrical tendencies were displayed to full effect in their huge stand, complete with heavy velvet curtains and central sculptural configuration of Chesterfield sofas. But a closer look revealed more of the quirky but functional furniture that has made Moooi world-famous.

Clockwise: Moooi exhibition inspired by their dramatic character; Porro Gallery bar unit; Ceccotti displaying their exceptional finishes with deep rich tones; Meridiani stand featuring Plinto table and Kita dining chair;

RE-RELEASES: OLD IS THE NEW ‘NEW’ And while everyone is searching for the new, I was dazzled by the old. Some of the best ‘new’ stories from Milan were anything but. Re-releases of classics from several world-famous designers were some of my favourites pieces from the fair. Finn Juhl was the grandfather of the modern movement and his pieces should be available in today’s design landscape - not only via the antique market. Danish furniture manufacturer Onecollection’s relaunch of his France Chair helps tell the little-known story of how a British pioneer, C.W.France helped launched the worldwide phenomenon that is Danish modern. Agapecasa exhibited the Angelo Mangiarotti collection, a selection of ‘evergreen classics’ from the great architect. One of the leading exponents of the Modern Movement, Mangiarotti’s work seemingly defies the bounds of physics, taking design into the realms of sculpture and beyond.

limited editions One of the most modern of manufacturing houses, Molteni, showcased several pieces from design legends that have influenced and formed their own history. Pieces by Gio Ponti sat alongside the newest creations from newly appointed Design Director Vincent van Duysen . Milan 2016 proved to me that there is always a place for new design, but not at the expense of the best designs that have ever been.

Clockwise from top left: France armchair by Finn Juhl; Eccentrico Table by Angelo Mangiarotti for Agapecasa; Table/Bench by Finn Juhl; Glove Cabinet by Finn Juhl; Shelves by Yasuhiko Itoh for Molteni & C; Pelican Armchair by Finn Juhl; Sideboard by Finn Juhl

The Old Schoolhouse by PEEK Architecture + Design

Glow ball pendant lights from Holloway’s of Ludlow, are suspended from the timber rafters above, and provide an even light to fill the tall volume.

In the beautiful village of Watlington, is situated one of PEEK Architecture + Design’s recent projects. The existing structures were an old mortuary housed in a small cottage style, single storey building, and a run down, clapboard barn, which used to be a vets. The client Susanna Samson, founder and designer of The Vintage Collection, had owned both buildings for years. She would escape from London to stay in the barn building every weekend, which was one open space with a sleeping platform, and she used the space to work and design in, as well as store her vast collection of vintage prints. She approached PEEK with the brief that she wanted to join both buildings into one residence, creating a three bedroom, two bathroom property. Strategic planning was to first get permission for the dormer windows

to the cottage, a vaulted roof to the main bedroom to the rear, and then finally a ‘link’ structure between the two, housing the new front door, and creating a courtyard beyond. It was named The Old Schoolhouse. The main living area, which contains the kitchen, dining and living, was insulated, and clad with tounge and groove panelling, painted in ‘Light Blue’ by Farrow and Ball. The kitchen is a simple off white shaker design, made by a local joiner, and the painted floorboards of the mezzanine enclose it above. The antique oak farmhouse table and reclaimed old school chairs, create the main dining space. The bright green sofa is situated perfectly under the large front window, which also acts as a ideal place to display Sue Samson’s striking cushion designs.

The bright red front door is now inviting from the street, and is framed by a wire arch adorned with climbing roses. PEEK chose a grey green paint color for the exterior of both buildings, giving the impression that the two structures are now one dwelling. The entrance hall is lined by French doors to the far side, which lead out to a small courtyard beyond. On the other side of the courtyard one can enter the master bedroom via matching French doors. To the ground floor of the cottage type building, is a tv room and lounge. A Moroccon rug gives the space a cosy feel, and the shelves are crammed with curiosities and books. A new painted timber stair with purple runner, leads up to the guest bedroom on the converted first floor. This room was painted a bright orange, with pink skirtings and woodwork. The French doors in the rear dormers, lead onto a secret roof terrace, nestled between the tiled roofs. Large scatter cushions create a comfortable place to read and relax.

The main bedroom to the rear of the cottage building, used to be a damp, flat roof structure, so PEEK installed a new pitch roof, and a vaulted ceiling with rooflights was formed over the space. This area houses the master sleeping area and dressing room, painted in a feminine pink, with an old, white, wrought iron bed centred in the room.

lamps. PEEK succeeded in breathing a new lease of life into two historically neglected buildings. Through strategic planning applications and a sensitive approach to the refurbishment, the materials used and the spaces created, guarantee that this new country residence maintains its character and charm.

The final result is a stunning country, crash pad, which is undoubtedly quintessentially English. The Old Schoolhouse is the ideal sanctuary for Susanna to work from, and a perfect stage for her eclectic collection of vintage finds as well as her own cushions and

The Art Of British Ceramics Producing ceramic art of the very highest quality in the heart of Worcestershire, Chamberlain & Co is a new luxury fine bone china brand, with statement pieces designed to enhance and embellish luxury homes, hotels, and galleries.

Championing Worcestershire art and the expert English ceramic skills that have been handed down from generation to generation in the heart of Worcestershire, Chamberlain & Co is committed to creating exclusive and unique ornamental ceramics of the very highest quality. “In a world where much is mass produced, we believe there is an appreciation of, and demand for, handmade British products of the highest quality,” says David Leader, Operations Manager. Here we showcase the Heritage Garden collection which was directly inspired by the wonderful ceramics created by Chamberlain and other Worcestershire china manufacturers in the early nineteenth century. The shapes of the four pieces in this timeless collection were specifically selected to blend history with contemporary design perfectly suited to modern tastes and styles. The Chinese influence, filtered through

Worcestershire china and chinoiserie, is evident in the style and colour of the flowers of Heritage Garden. The design comprises three main sprays of flowers that weave together around the shape of the vases, Ginger jar and bowl, along with delicate vignettes of flowers and leaves. “We can only achieve this because our Chamberlain & Co artists are handpicked and we believe them to be the most talented in England, with long and distinguished pedigree’s in Worcestershire ceramics, with skills that have been passed down through the generations,” says David. We believe the end result is a triumph: a collection of classic Chamberlain fine bone china that brings the style of the eighteenth century into the twenty-first century, a celebration of Worcestershire ceramics past, present and future. Any one of these pieces would make a wonderful centrepiece in your home, an heirloom, an investment lasting for eternity.

Chamberlain & Co

The handmade nature of our products makes each piece and an individual work of art, every item signed by the artist. “Consequently designs can be customised to suit particular tastes – maximising appeal for a particular customer or market” emphasises David, “the company is perfectly positioned to undertake bespoke commissions, and this has been key to the company’s recent growth”. David adds, “In reality each piece is bespoke so if you want to influence the design, colour or add your own design elements we welcome the enquiry”. “Nothing rivals the beauty of bespoke handmade, hand-painted English fine bone china and those who seek the very best prestige statement pieces should not have to compromise – Chamberlain can make that difference,” concludes David. www.chamberlainco.co.uk

DISCOVER HUMAN CENTRIC LIGHTING Natural daylight is a rich mix of colours that change over the course of the day and regulate our body clocks. The static colour of artificial lighting skews our individual internal clock, leaving us blighted by a tired and lacklustre feeling. With LUCTRA®’s human centric LED lighting system, the colour changes found in natural daylight are replicated, harnessing the biological effect of light in order to deliver proven wellbeing and productivity benefits within the workplace. the LEDs, maintaining an operating temperature which never rises above 40°C. Self-locking joints specially developed for LUCTRA® allow adjustment of the lamp to any desired position. Floor and Floor Twin: The LUCTRA® floor lamp models are available in individual or twin versions and in a sleek floor standing form, distributing perfectly even lighting from a maximum height of 1.80 metres. The individually adjustable lamp heads of the floor lamp provide maximum flexibility; in particular the twin lamp heads can be adjusted independently to provide multiple users their own personal lighting sequence.

Now for the Science The natural colour of daylight stimulates the production of melatonin, a chemical hormone that makes us feel sleepy, and serotonin, which regulates your mood. In turn, these hormones control our circadian rhythm, a 24-hour, endogenously generated cycle that influences people’s sleeping and eating patterns. The colour and intensity of daylight changes over the course of 24-hours and can have a significant effect on these two hormones. The effective targeted changes of light colour provided by the LUCTRA® family of lamps are able to remedy a deficit in these hormones by stabilising the human biorhythm, ensuring individuals are able to sleep well and feel more rested when carrying out their daily tasks. The biologically effective light of LUCTRA® uses both cold white and warm white LEDS that produce an illuminance of up to 1,000 lux, and an impressive Kelvin level between 2,700K and 6,500K to recreate natural daylight. LUCTRA® will be exhibiting its innovative range at Clerkenwell Design Week (24-26 May 2016) and on stand PR9, Project Exhibition, visitors will see: FLEX: FLEX is a rechargeable, cordless lamp that provides complete freedom to work anywhere without compromising the quality of light. Available in orange, black, white and aluminium finishes, FLEX can operate as a table lamp or a wall lamp, with its unique angled design able to support itself against a wall or the side of a table. FLEX’s integrated lithium-ion battery is capable of powering the lamp for up to four hours, delivering unrivalled portable human centric lighting. Table and Table Pro: The flagships models are available in three contemporary finishes of aluminium, black or white, ensuring coordination with a multitude of interiors which is complimented by the geometric (LINEAR) or rounded (RADIAL) lamp head design. Stylish and practical open cooling fins are featured in the lamp heads to effectively dissipate the heat from

Every lamp in the range benefits from the innovative VITACORE® electronic system. This technology offers users intuitive access to LUCTRA® functions and the ability to control the brightness and colour of the light by simply placing a finger on the touch panel. A VITACORE® app (not available on the Table or FLEX model) is also available on Apple and Android systems, allowing a fully adjustable 24-hour lighting sequence to be programmed to automatically vary the colour and intensity of light to simulate natural illumination through the course of the day.

All of the towel rails within the Sussex Range are entirely fabricated from 304 grade stainless steel, of which over 90% is from recycled source and the rail itself is 100% recyclable at the end of its life. There are no environmentally harmful chemical plating processes in the manufacture of stainless steel, the very fact that it is not plated ensures the rails will not rust, flake or corrode and small marks can simply be polished out. The Property The 200m² apartment located in a beautiful Haussmannian building on Boulevard Saint Germain has a large hallway, large living room, dining room with lounge and fireplace, two large bedrooms each with their own bathroom and dressing room and a modern kitchen. Gérard Faivre believes the entrance of each apartment deserves particular attention as it is the first room the client experiences, and the emotion of the first encounter is decisive. To conjure up a bit of magic, Gérard Faivre unleashed his artistic soul to make its design unique and

spectacular. The idea to instil the internationally coveted atmosphere of Saint Germain-des-Prés in the apartment’s entrance came naturally to Gérard Faivre. He shared his idea with the photographer Mathieu Fiol, who captured the atmosphere and put the area’s iconic sights in black and white on canvas to bring the walls to life. The result is like an invitation to sit on the terraces of legendary venues that contribute to the neighbourhood’s unique charm: Café de Flore, Les Deux Magots and Brasserie Lipp. Soak up the atmosphere, stroll by luxury boutiques or read and write like so many famous names of past and present. The stylish living rooms have a fifties feel with a bourgeois touch. The interior blends vintage furniture and accessories (rugs by Gio Ponti) with contemporary fittings and paintings by past masters and modern sculptures. This combination reflects Gérard Faivre’s vision to create an apartment that’s as unique as an artwork. Moving from one room

THE

MANCHESTER FURNITURE SHOW 17-19 July 2016

STYLE & FLAIR THIS SUMMER Summer will soon be upon us and The Manchester Furniture Show, (17 - 19 July, Manchester Central), returns this year with more exhibitors, more new ranges and a summer feast full of flair and design. After the success of last year’s show, the main hall sold out quickly and the exhibitor list is again full of some of the leading names in furniture and interior furnishings, including Baker, Bluebone, Buoyant, Gallery Direct, Lebus, Nathan, Nolte, Scan Thor, Westbridge and Whitemeadow. Returning exhibitors include Flintshire based upholstery major Westbridge, who operate from four production sites in the UK. Sales Director Nicola Bell said after the 2015 show “We were pleasantly surprised to find that at the end of each day we had taken more orders that the same time last year! So perhaps the quantity of visitors was smaller but the quality greater? We had a great show and it was good to see other new faces there. We will be back next year!” Also returning are German exhibitors Rauch and Nolte Mobel who both especially make designs for the UK market. Both praised last years show and instantly rebooked for 2016. Michael Taterstall, Nolte Sales Director, said “We are very pleased with the results of the Show, it has been a well organised and good Show to do and has a really nice feel to it. Our stand has been very busy with existing and new customers and we’ll be back.’ Gallery Direct are returning with a larger stand and will again introduce new furniture and accessory collections. They are guaranteed to make a splash with an abundance of style, texture and inventive design. Furniture isn’t the only star of the Manchester Show. Lighting, mirrors, art, rugs, decorative accessories and soft furnishings are all to be found in copious amounts. Some of the most imaginative accessory companies in the UK, including DB Mirrors, Flair Rugs, Hookes Interiors, Wire Lamps and Wilde Java are all bringing new designs to tempt buyers. The award winning venue, the iconic Manchester Central building; which combines stunning architecture with a relaxed atmosphere is also a big feature of the event. This former central rail station, with its spectacular arched glazed roof, creates a unique show experience for exhibitors and visitors alike. To see the latest designs in every style of furniture and accessory from traditional to contemporary, colours from soft cool to vibrant bright, visit the Manchester Furniture Show, Manchester Central, 17 - 19 July. Only 2 hours from London, it’s where you’ll find the best new products on the market this summer.

General Information

Technical Specifications

Nebula “HPWM” is an innovative, best value, fire protection solution designed to allow open plan layouts to comply with current UK building regulations (BS 8458:2015). Building and housing regulations have traditionally encouraged the creation of fire resistant compartments in homes as to limit the spread of fire, an approach that consumers find increasingly frustrating as they seek open, light spaces to live in. Today however, LACoRS guide, approved Document B, British Standard_8458 and the Scottish Building Regulations all recognise the need for flexibility of layout and all allow open-plan designs as long as some additional features, including fire suppression, are provided. For architects and developers, Nebula “HPWM” allows the modern, open-plan layouts that clients increasingly expect to comply with Building Regulations. For landlords, Nebula “HPWM” can create a safe escape route in an existing open plan house or flat with no impact on rentable space.

Pump Dimensions Height – 400mm Width – 600mm Depth – 300mm Operating Pressure 140 BAR

Why Nebula “HPWM”? No False Alarms – Nebula “HPWM” is triggered by heat activated frangible bulbs! This means that the system cannot be triggered by other independent alarms! Lack Of Disruption – Nebula “HPWM” is designed for easy installation and can be completed in two stress free visits! No Human Intervention – Nebula “HPWM” triggers automatically. When faced with an uncontrolled fire it is best practice to “get out, stay out and dial 999”. Low Maintenance – Annual maintenance is a straightforward and quick but essential procedure. Prevent Damage To Your Property – Independent testing showed that Nebula “HPWM” does quickly suppress and control fires. Low Water Usage – Nebula “HPWM” uses a lot less water than a traditional sprinkler system – protecting your assets even if the system has suppressed a fire! Best Value – For cases where fire suppression is needed Nebula “HPWM” is your cost effective alternative to traditional sprinkler systems, compartmentation and fire curtains!

The English House range is that rare thing in light fittings – stylish, but without imposing a “style on the room or the building. Designed with a classical simplicity, the lights are equally at home in every period of building from Tudor manor to minimalist modern studio, and from intimate sitting room to large public space. They are the creation of Charles Morris, a designer with a national reputation for country houses and the best in domestic architecture. Like his buildings, these light fittings have been designed to combine the best qualities of traditional form and materials with a subtle contemporary touch.

5-6 Connaught Place has been restored to is former grandeur

5-6 Connaught Place has been transformed by Redrow London, into exclusive luxurious apartments. Originally built as townhouses in the early 19th century the properties were converted into office space after the Second World War, and have now been restored to their original purpose - luxury homes fit for 21st century living. John Sisk & Sons Ltd sought advice from Selectaglaze to assist in reducing the external noise levels. Secondary glazing is fitted to the room side of the existing primary windows and is the most

effective way of reducing unwanted noise. When there is a gap between the primary and secondary glazing of at least 100mm, 45dB is achievable. Along with noise reduction, secondary glazing also helps in reducing heat loss, creating a more comfortable living space. Working closely with Redrow London and John Sisk, Selectaglaze first installed a sample unit. Satisfied with the performance and aesthetics, Redrow London engaged Selectaglaze to complete the rest of the building. A total of 69 units were installed including curved units. Each secondary glazed unit is tailor made to ensure the closest fit.

As secondary glazing is a discreet and reversible adaptation, it is ideal for Listed properties and is widely accepted by most heritage bodies. Established in 1966 and Royal Warrant Holders since 2004, Selectaglaze has a wealth of experience working on all building types. Selectaglaze will be exhibiting at the BIID Annual conference on the 16th of June at the Royal Geographical Society. For further information, please contact Selectaglaze on 01727 837271, e-mail: enquiries@selectaglaze.co.uk or visit: www.selectaglaze.co.uk

Electric Heating Designed for Fashionista’s Reserves of metals and minerals available on the planet are constantly diminishing, and the cost of finding and extracting them is constantly rising. The normal linear economy, where-by manufacturing processes create huge amounts of waste products for every finished article, is seriously unsustainable for the planet’s long term future. Therefore a circular economy has been devised to provide a practical solution. The circular economy makes use of existing waste products by recycling them into a usable product. These days, nothing is exactly what it seems… Fridges and Dishwashers are disguised as kitchen cupboard doors, children’s beds are disguised as fairy castles and racing cars and electric radiators are disguised as works of art!

Yes, beautiful paintings and artistic stone wall art hanging above the sofa is now an electric radiator. Copies of paintings or photographs can be printed on the surface of each marble panel, in a choice of sizes. With 24 different colours and various textured finishes, the humble radiator is now a stunningly beautiful artifact made from 100% marble dust that will totally transform everything you think about the ugly metal radiators that take up central wall space in your homes. Interior Design has reached a new level, and exclusive penthouses, Hotels, Board Rooms, converted barns and eco-friendly new-builds are being transformed by this brand

new LivingStone range of electric heating products. The recycled marble dust is totally carbon free, made by a ‘cold technology’ and hand crafted into these unbelievably beautiful works of art. They deliver a radiant heat that will warm people and not just the air much more efficiently than any convector heating system. By using Livingstone Heating with your solar panels as well as the national grid system, giving you a fully renewable source of heating, with a zero carbon footprint. Since 1895, Wesley Barrell have been handcrafting beautiful bespoke upholstery in Oxfordshire. Our collection of upholstered sofas and armchairs demonstrate a commitment to the highest levels of craftsmanship, great British design and the best quality materials that truly respect the company's rich heritage.

As bespoke furniture makers we do not hold stock of preassembled frames, instead each sofa is built from start to finish for each individual customer. Flexibility to specify the style, size, seat depth and tailoring options ensures that every sofa is unique and perfectly suited to the customer’s preferences and taste. Although the aesthetics of a sofa are undoubtedly important it is easy to be misled by appearance when looking around a furniture showroom, but price, and therefore quality is determined by construction. Below are a number of essential sofa components to consider before you invest in that all important centrepiece of your living space. Firstly, the frame. Our skilled carpenters take pride in making our frames from sustainable seasoned soft and hard woods (FCS sourced) that combined, give strength and flexibility. We couldn’t be more confident in the materials that we use and therefore each of our sofas comes with a 25 year frame guarantee. Lalique’s Unique Collection Of Crystal Panels

Hamilton to showcase ‘designer’ collections at British Institute of Interior Design Conference in June. Hamilton Litestat is confirmed as one of just eight exhibitors to showcase its product range at the annual conference for the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID). Set to explore the theme of ‘interior identities’ this year, the BIID Conference will take place on 16th June 2016 at Royal Geographical Society in London.

In collaboration with renowned British artist Damien Hirst, French luxury crystal maker Lalique has produced a unique collection of crystal panels. Entitled Eternal, the project encapsulates the ephemeral and illusive form of the butterfly, a symbol of life and beauty, which is a creature close to the hearts of both René Lalique and Damien Hirst. In Hirst’s work, the graceful butterfly also serves as a reminder of the fragility of life. The panels, of which just fifty have been created in each of the 12 available colours, have been produced in three distinct motifs; Hope, Love and Beauty. Each panel is engraved with Hirst’s signature, is numbered and comes complete with a signed edition certificated. Lalique

10 Gaia heats Hektor’s house…or rather his barn When somebody books a beautiful historic timber-framed barn as a wedding venue, they want to see the mellow oak beams in their natural glory; they do not want to see unsightly steel radiators bolted to them. That is why landowner and developer, Hektor Rous, chose Gaia’s wet underfloor heating system in the renovation of the Grade II listed barn at the family seat, Henham Park, in Suffolk. The Rous family has lived at Henham Park since the 16th Century and, when Hektor took over the daunting task of running the estate in 2004, he set about making the park and its various buildings earn their keep.

9

Commissioned in March 2015, the heating system has seen a full year’s operation without any problems. “The floor is working well and we have used it successfully with only a day lead-in to heat the whole space which is considerable with its high ceilings,” says Hektor. Ghizlan el Glaoui

19 New innovation enables open plan layouts and domestic loft conversions whilst keeping the design stylish and unobtrusive.

Moroccan-born artist, Ghizlan el Glaoui has developed a unique take on mosaic art that fuses ancient paint techniques with the latest in interactive LED lighting technology. Inspired by her Berber heritage, Ghizlan uses a geometrical method employed in fresco art to capture the essence of her subjects through vivid colours, oils, traditional tempuras and luminescent metallic paints on canvas, which she then illuminates from behind. This provides the ability to change the colour and temperature of the light - which can be controlled through an iPad or remote control - depending on the time of day. Available in any size or scale for residential or commercial projects, the result is a series of distinctive paintings reminiscent of the glittering mosaics of the Byzantine Empire, ghizlanelglaoui.com.

IDEAL COMMERCIAL BOILERS EXCEL AT BRICKNELL PRIMARY SCHOOL Ideal Commercial Boilers has provided three 470kW floor standing condensing boilers from the brand new Imax Xtra EL range to Bricknell Primary School in Hull, which are now delivering low cost, high efficiency heating. Bricknell Primary School is the largest primary school in Hull with around 630 pupils on roll. Prior to the installation of the new Imax Xtra EL boilers, heating for the school was generated by five standard efficiency boilers that were over 13 years old. Not only were the old boilers having to be run at full capacity throughout term time to meet the school’s heat demand, leading to high energy use and running costs, they had also begun to fail and required continual maintenance. The decision was made to upgrade the appliances with a far more reliable, low cost solution. For more information about Ideal Commercial’s condensing boiler ranges or alternative heating solutions, please email commercial@idealboilers.com, call 01482 492251 or go to www.idealcommercialboilers.com

Since they started in 2014 they received many orders from all over the world and worked with several interior designers and decorated private homes, offices and restaurants. You can choose from 18 different designs with 3 different wood types (walnut, oak or bog oak). They produce their panels from the same, high quality wood that furniture manufacturers use for luxurious furniture and don’t use reclaimed wood. Probably they are the only company who offer this kind of wooden panels with 3D CAD files that you can download from their website and use to design the wall and show to your client.

33

They offer delivery to any part of the world. Their website is available in 7 languages with 5 currencies and all their prices inclusive free delivery. You can find their full range of products, reference gallery, installation instruction photos and video and you can order sample in their website: www.wallure.com

Would You Design a Building Without a Fuse Box? Of Course Not. The biggest claim for insurers today is water escapage (leaks), damage and restoration. It also wastes a lot of water and cost home owners a lot of money.

Open up shopping spaces with sliding and stacking walls from D R Services Within covered shopping arcades, the specification of moveable glazed walls for shop fronts is a highly practical solution. They open up the retail space so that there is no obvious boundary between inside and outside, while also maximising floor space and removing dead areas. There is a wide choice of styles, shapes and colours available as well as automatic systems to cope with installations where manual handling is not an option. For architects and designers, there are no hindrances at all regarding style – the only major constraint that might be faced with moveable walls is whether or not they will physically fit within the confines of the building. With stacking doors, the size of doors specified is obviously limited by the amount of stacking space available in the parking bays. 57 This spring, Veedon Fleece delivered two hand knotted runners for GF Watts’ original studio at Limnerslease House, recently restored by the Watts Gallery in Compton, Surrey. An interesting design brief led to the recreation of two Mughul Indian inspired designs, one designed as a complete runner, the other as if it had been formed as a fragment from a larger 17th Century carpet. The strict arrangement of the new studio gallery meant that the carpets had to complement and then follow the original interior plan. The interesting point is to see how the carefully coloured and proportionally designed runners mellow along with the interior over the next 100 years. We are delighted with the initial response from the gallery “All our volunteers and so many of our visitors have been really impressed by them. We’ve even had a couple of instances when visitors have thought they are original and been reluctant to stand on them, so a complete success” Kerri Offord at The Watts Gallery www.wattsgallery.org.uk Veedon Fleece – Manufacturers of carpets and rugs to your design specification. 01483 575758 www.veedonfleece.com

sports car segment but this model represented the starting point for development of the F-TYPE SVR. Everything which contributes to performance and vehicle dynamics has been meticulously reevaluated, re-engineered and optimised still further.

SUMMARY The new Jaguar F-TYPE SVR The new Jaguar F-TYPE SVR is the first Jaguar SVR, developed to exploit the lightweight aluminium sports car’s full potential while retaining its inherent tractability and day-to-day usability. The Jaguar F-TYPE SVR is a 200mph, all-weather supercar. More powerful, lighter, and benefiting from an enhanced chassis and driveline and active aerodynamics, the all-wheel drive F-TYPE SVR Coupé and Convertible deliver supercar performance – in all conditions – and unrivalled driver engagement and reward. “The purity of the F-TYPE’s form is something truly special, but in designing the new F-TYPE SVR we had the opportunity to create something even more dramatic. Every additional form, line or component is there for a reason, and contributes to the car’s increased performance as well as its presence. “Cutting-edge aerodynamics have always been fundamental to Jaguar design, and everything from the enlarged air intakes to the active rear wing is essential to the new F-TYPE SVR’s dramatic looks and 200mph potential.” Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar Raising the output of Jaguar’s supercharged 5.0-litre V8 to 575PS and 700Nm enables the F-TYPE SVR to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.5 seconds. Maximum speed of the Coupé model is 200mph, the Convertible 195mph. The F-TYPE R is already a benchmark in the

By exploiting the fundamental capability engineered in to the F-TYPE from day one, Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division has developed Jaguar’s fastest and most powerful series production road car. “Our objective was to take everything that our customers love about F-TYPE – the performance, the handling, the sound, the design – and take it to a whole new level. This is what the new F-TYPE SVR delivers: it’s a 200mph all-weather supercar. “With 575PS, less weight, an uprated chassis and bespoke calibrations for the transmission and all-wheel drive system, performance is even more accessible and exploitable. This is a car that SVO has developed for true enthusiasts but it’s one that can be enjoyed every day.” John Edwards, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations

The The F-TYPE’s F-TYPE’s aluminium aluminium double double wishbone wishbone front front and and rear rear suspension suspension and and state-of-the-art state-of-the-art electric electric power-assisted power-assisted steering steering (EPAS) (EPAS) system system

gave the SVO team the best possible starting point for developing the SVR’s vehicle dynamics. That the vehicle is 25kg lighter as standard than the AWD F-TYPE R – and 50kg lighter with options including the Carbon Ceramic Matrix brake system and carbon fibre roof – brings immediate benefits in terms of handling. Optimised aerodynamics produce further gains: the rear wing delivers reductions in lift whether in the raised or lowered position. These fundamental improvements are matched by a raft of other hardware and software changes designed to extract the full potential from every part of the chassis. The rear anti-roll bar is thicker. The valves inside the continuously-variable dampers have been revised and the control software – the heart of Jaguar’s Adaptive Dynamics system – has been recalibrated. The overall effect is that both low speed comfort and high speed control are improved. The rear knuckle is completely new. Now an intricate, weight-optimised aluminium die casting, the design of the part enables a 37 per cent increase in camber stiffness and a 41 per cent increase in toe stiffness, which translates into greater control of the tyre contact patch and an even more connected steering feel. The front anti-roll bar diameter has been reduced slightly. Together with the revised damper control software, a unique tune for the Torque Vectoring system which enables even more precise control of the braking applied to the inner wheels, the changes mitigate understeer – even at high corner entry speeds. Fitted as standard with Jaguar’s Super Performance braking system featuring large, 380mm and 376mm front and rear brake discs, the F-TYPE SVR can be specified with Jaguar’s Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) braking system. Featuring even larger 398mm and 380mm discs and six- and four-piston monobloc

calipers, this system delivers exceptional braking performance with outstanding fade resistance. The brake prefill system ensures consistent pedal feel, stop after stop. The wider, specially-developed 265/35/ZR20 and 305/30/ZR20 tyres provide exceptional levels of grip with no detriment to ride quality or refinement. The range of 9J and 11J forged aluminium wheels deliver savings of up to 13.8kg per vehicle – another weight reduction which beat the development target – and the open spoke design also improves brake cooling. Exclusive to the F-TYPE SVR, the range comprises Coriolis wheels in Satin Technical Grey or Gloss Black, and – for models fitted with the CCM braking system – Maelstrom wheels with a Satin Black polished finish. The F-TYPE’s EPAS system already sets the benchmark for feel and response – especially off-centre. Further tuning of the control software delivers even better feedback and, combined with the stiffer rear knuckle assembly, the new wheels and tyres and the revised damper settings, means that the F-TYPE SVR steers with even greater immediacy and precision. AERODYNAMICS Reducing drag and lift contributes to the enhanced dynamics and performance and subtly enhances the F-TYPE’s award-winning design. The effort made in developing the chassis was matched by the work done on the F-TYPE SVR’s aerodynamics. Asked to solve the often conflicting requirements of reducing drag and reducing lift, the SVO team designed a full suite of features which work together to improve dynamics, stability, performance and efficiency.
