Choosing Upholstered Furniture Cushioned Support: Feather and down seat cushions are the most traditional and also the softest. They must be regularly plumped to maintain shape. More resilient are seat cushions with a mix of feather and fibre with casing, or a foam core with a feather wrap. These are firmer than pure feather but still need plumping. Foam provides the firmest seat cushion and is low maintenance too, although seat cushions can look rather square and unyielding un-less softened by a Dacron wrap. Where to Start: A logical starting point is to think about the best features of the sofa or armchair being replaced so you can try to emulate them in a new purchase. Otherwise, sitting on a variety of models is the only reliable way to find the right one. People often choose a sofa after perching on the edge of the seat and bouncing up and down. Better advice is to take of your coat and shoes as well, if you like to put your feet up, settle down with a newspaper or book or pretend to be watching television, Just as you would at home. Sizing it up: The size, function and relative formality of the room will influence your choice. For a small room, a sofa with slim arms won’t overwhelm the space. A stream-lined model with a low back will complement a room with a low ceiling, but you may miss having somewhere to rest your head. A high back will give good head and shoulder support and echo dimensions of a tall room. If getting the sofa into the house might be a problem, take door or stairway measurements to the showroom with you. When access is restricted, there are companies that will make a sofa in two halves or with removable arms and assemble it on site. Having a sofa made to order usually allows for some dimensions to be modified. Sofas can be made longer and shorter than standard two-, three- or four- seaters. A small person can ask for a few centimeters to be taken off
the seat depth so that feet can rest flat on the floor; someone tall can specify a deeper seat so that knees are not higher than the waist when seated.
Most back cushions are filled with feather and/ or manmade fibre. The best sofa companies will offer a full range of options.
On some sofas, back height can be increased as well. A couple with p[referred ways of sitting may do better to order a pair of personally adjusted sofas or a sofa and a chair. Modular Sofas also offer useful flexibility.
Style file:
Under Cover:
A classic sofa with fixed covers and no valance can be transformed by changing the legs. Cabriole legs, bun feet and polished turned legs suggest a traditional context, while tapered legs and apt choice of cover can give the same sofa a contemporary edge.
The cost of a sofa reflects directly to the method and materials used in its construction or , in the case of classic 20th-century and contemporary pieces, to the reputation of the designer. Sofas built by traditional methods will have a hardwood frame with coil springs or a spring unit fitted to the frame. On to that foundation will come horsehair or fibre stuffing, then a second layer including wool felt or cotton padding to give a firm seat or base for cushions. The best hand-built sofas cab last for generations. Contemporary upholstery may also be built on to a hard-wood frame but will be constructed differently. Many pieces have firmer short coil springs or elasticated webbing and hessian fixed beneath high-density foam on the frame, sometimes with feather seat cushions on top. Superior grades of upholstery foam are resilient, but low –density foam used directly over webbing grid in some inexpensive sofas can flatten and begin to crumble in a relatively short time. Under-filled cushions tend not to last long.
Many popular sofas are based on design of the past. Often, elements from different periods define the sofa as classic. Such as scroll arms or buttoning. But most of all, it’s the legs.
Some Sofas have legs that are integral to the frame, but when they are fitted individually to a sofa, it can be updated to match a new room scheme by swopping the legs for a different style. The obvious time do to this is when the sofa is recovered. Website: www.wesley-barrell.co.uk

THE ARTISTS The first step in the production process is, of course, the design. Products can be made to specific requirements, or a piece can be handmade to order from the Besselink and Jones permanent collection. As part of the process, in-house artists create beautiful illustrations to show how the desired lamp may look in its intended setting. Once the client is happy with the piece, the designers then work through prototypes until the perfect product is achieved.
THE WORKSHOP Every Besselink & Jones lamp is hand-crafted in London and made through traditional methods by a team of skilled craftsmen. Besselink & Jones specialises in brass-turning, crafting in bronze, metal plating, wood-carving, hand- painting and colour-matching. Whichever technique they are using, there are no shortcuts in producing well- engineered lighting pieces of the highest quality.
THE FINAL PRODUCT From restoration projects to new bespoke designs, from the cleaning of chandeliers to the conversion of antique pieces, from classic brass-turned pieces to modern creations in nickels, chromes or bronzes, from single lamps to entire complex lighting systems, the Besselink & Jones workshops have a wealth of experience and expertise and are proud to continue the tradition of outstanding British workmanship into the future.

Trinity Completes Trifecta with Unveiling of Award-Winning Additions to its Hammock Line Trinity, a company renowned for reinventing social relaxation, is proud to complete its trifecta of innovative hammocks with the introduction of two new models, Duality and Unity, which complement the company’s shared hammock experience. Echoing the praise of the company’s triple hammock design, recognized by the Innovation Award at the 2013 Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference in Las Vegas, Trinity’s new hammocks come to market on the wings of a 2017 European Product Design Award. “We are excited to build upon the success of the shared hammock experience with the introduction of these two new complementary products,” says Gilbert Tourville, Trinity’s founder. “Duality and Unity follow in the footsteps of our triple hammock products and embrace the same elements of high-quality, innovative design and unparalleled relaxation that the hospitality industry and residential users have come to expect from Trinity.” Replicating and innovating for success The fulfillment of the Trinity hammock line follows a proven path, infusing both classic and modern design elements into the finest marine-grade materials available to inspire dreams of sailing the seas. With a focus on design, comfort and durability, Dualitycombines the relaxation of both a hanging chair and a hammock experience and is supported by a stainless steel structure and marine-grade teak seating. Comfort completes Duality’s design, with a Sunbrella fabric mattress and matching fabric pillows, all stuffed with Urecel quick dry foam to repel extreme weather conditions.
53
Unity, the stand-alone model in Trinity’s collection, enhances the core features of a traditional hammock experience through its modern design elements and use of innovative materials. On the foundations of a stainless steel design, Unity’s hammock bed is available in either quilted Sunbrella fabric or Phifertex breathable mesh, and is secured by durable Gore thenara UV resistant thread. Duality and Unity complete the Trinity concept, which is now available in four relaxing models based on three core design principles. The new models extend the comfort and innovation of the Eternity and Infinitytriple hammock designs to singular users, creating a complement to Trinity’s unique sharing experience. Trinity - Behind the design Trinity is the conceptual brainchild of Gilbert Tourville, a former merchant marine captain and entrepreneur who spent twenty years operating a number of innovative and highly successful café-restaurant concepts in Quebec prior to founding Trinity. In 2011, based on a desire to truly innovate the social experience of outdoor relaxation, Tourville embarked on a journey that would not only capture the essence of that vision, but would also bring it to life through the fusion of unique design elements and leading edge materials that ensure the highest quality and most favorable experience possible. To accomplish that bold vision, Trinity engages Southeast Asian artisans with unique talents and historic roots, while using sociallyresponsible products that ensure a sustainable future for the artisan’s communities. stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell. In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the
Ironmongery market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Touch’s owner and founder, Bill Benham, has 33 years’ experience in the ironmongery trade, as do his colleagues Jim Haselup and Alan Blanchard. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods
which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HOUSE AND A HOME
Serendipity is described as an unexpected discovery; a pleasant surprise; finding something one was not in quest of; and, when translated into the world of interior design, it can be the resounding difference between a furnishing a house, and creating a home.

The open plan hallway is wonderfully light, with the stained dark oak and glass bannister allowing plenty of natural light to hit the 3.5m drop chandelier, creating sparkling reflections across the staircase. Combining old and new with the owner’s timeless leather wingback armchair and Hill House’s own Talboy dresser, the cream tiled floor opens the space up even further. Maintaining the original layout of the kitchen, Hill House Interiors used a mix of French polish and dark staining for the units, with the new marble floor adding to the luxurious feel. Leading into a stylish gentleman’s bar area and back out into the spacious entrance, where elegant Abbot & Boyd handmade textured wallpaper compliments the specially covered four door brown crocodile cabinet. The open plan walk through is a far cry from the three small reception rooms that previously occupied the space.
Creating a truly personal space in the living room by hanging artwork by the owner’s St Martin’s trained son, the Hill House Chesterfield deep button corner sofa in regal purple velvet provides the more traditional edge to the otherwise modern room, with mirrored walls helping to open up the space. Having transformed all four bedrooms of the 1930s period home in muted, neutral tones complete with luxe textured fabrics and their trademark geometric statement pieces, the Hill House Interiors team turned their styling expertise to the main bathroom, covering the entire back wall in an intriguing piece of Alex Turco’s artwork. Finished with resin waterproofed panels, the statement image is uninterrupted by the wet room shower, recessed apertures and elegant freestanding bathtub, which sits next to new cabinetry.

A STEAMY PROBLEM SOLVED WITH demista™
Why use a demista heated mirror pad? Over 26 years ago, the innovators of demista™, spotted an obvious gap in the market, and developed the idea for a product that was unknown at that time. After extensive travelling they had noticed that hotels they were staying in had steamed up mirrors after bathing or showering. So the idea of the heated mirror pad came up. These pads can be used behind mirrors on bathroom walls or on bathroom cabinets. They are easy to fit, have no maintenance requirements and cost a minimal amount to run. No more wiping, and
smearing the surface. Just a clear view almost instantaneously once the pad is switched on. demista™ heated mirror pads are the first choice of anyone installing or refurbishing a bathroom, whether it be in private homes and apartments, or hotel developments around the world. The pads are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, and multiples can be used for extremely large surfaces. They can also be fitted on bathroom cabinets. Gismos, Gadgets and Good Design
IT & business innovations from beyond the housing sector Professor Dr Michael Benfield
In the early ‘noughties’ I ran a seminar for ‘Constructing Excellence’ on ‘Safety by Design’, followed a few years later by one on ‘Designing Out Waste’. The purpose in mentioning them is to emphasise the fact that, despite new products and new and updated regulations, like those dealing with high speed electronic communications networks (Approved document ‘R’), the house-building industry has made little progress so far this century. Back then I argued for buildings to be designed via ‘partnerships’ that embraced site constraints, programmed out risk, and ensured good immediate and ongoing communications with present and future stakeholders. I pointed out that to do so required ‘design teams’ who not only knew their legal duties & responsibilities, but who understood how the job would be done. In turn this meant grasping the logistics, getting to grips with handling and ‘Temporary’ works, as well as embracing snagging and maintenance along with the lifetime risks of the building both in construction, in use and decommissioning. Stressing that ‘good design’ is SAFE I also urged participants to accept their responsibility for making others aware of all of these risks. While today it’s pretty easy to specify IT related products for any building, like visual or fingerprint recognition access, remote video surveillance, cell-phone heat and light control, and so on, doing so efficiently remains a major challenge. Indeed, arguably this is more important than these ‘nice to have’ gismos and gadgets themselves. Home buyers and renters alike remain more concerned about the cost and speed efficiency of new home construction, their comfort, running, and maintenance costs. In several respects ‘Designing Out Waste’ was an extension of the earlier attempt to introduce business innovations from outside the construction industry. Techniques and disciplines like ‘Six Sigma’ and ‘Kaizen’ were applied across the whole design and build process to cut out waste in design time, scheduling delays, and prototyping errors, as well as material waste, etc. Once again an important element of this was the acceptance that building design needed to become a collaborative exercise, rather than the God given domain of any one person. As in the motor, aircraft and ship building industries, for example, recognition of the increasingly complex nature of the building enterprise was seen as increasingly important. Designing with partnering in mind emphasises communications, the importance of avoiding delays, and the need to programme out errors. It also recognises the need to really know what stocks & other ‘industry standard’ materials are readily available, how jobs will be done in practice, and the need for a better and fuller understanding of the building and manufacturing tasks involved. Grasping the totality of the logistics involved was seen then, and remains today, of major importance. Getting to grips with transport, ‘Right First Time’ and ‘Continuous Improvement’ processes were and are obvious candidates for expanding the horizons of the design team. Equating the notion of ‘Lifetime Costs’ with the avoidance of delays and the need to programme out errors, along with a sound knowledge of materials, processes and procedures remains vital. Although accepting that good design avoids waste, then and now many ‘professionals’ - used to a more relaxed regime - found and find this an unpopular constraint. Few, it seems are ready even now to accept responsibility for, and bear the cost of, any waste caused by them. As we move further toward ‘factory built’ homes clients and their professional advisors and consultants must understand that, to produce a building in the factory requires all elements to be determined in detail before work commences, rather than muddling through trying to resolve complicated design issues as a project progresses. While this is possible using sloppy ‘wet’ trade building techniques, where adjustments can be made in-situ, complex off-site manufactured elements are much more difficult to alter. Failure to understand this is both prejudicing MMC and costing clients and builders’ small fortunes to correct. Partnering for the whole design, supply and construction chain is a vital process that must be developed to correct this. Consequently, whilst moving with the times to incorporate all that is best and wonderful and time saving and comfortable, and desirable in any building design we undertake, manufacture, or build, I still find myself ‘shouting at the wind’ for fundamental shifts in professional attitudes. However, the ‘winds of change’ are blowing and I do detect small shifts. As construction moves ‘off-site’ into the factory these will greatly improve efficiency, quality, and affordable delivery of all levels of social and private housing.
Michael Benfield February 2017
-Ends Prof. Dr. Michael Benfield is a Chartered Environmentalist. He predicts that current pressures for more housing will increase demand for Off-Site Production and MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) leading to new standards of professional capability, project design and the development of new management tools for the housebuilding and construction sector. Listing Chartered Builder, Chartered Surveyor and Chartered Manager amongst his credentials, he chairs leading UK timber engineers Benfield ATT. Based in Caldicot, Monmouthshire, they are a ‘full service’ timber Design and Build group using 3D design as a key efficiency tool. www.BenfieldATT.uk

Äggcøddler Believe it or not, this pretty porcelain vessel will become your new favorite breakfast tool. Scrambling and frying eggs will become a thing of the past when you add this coddler to your culinary collection. Äggcøddler is an adorable porcelain vessel in pastel colors with a jaunty hat secured by a stretch band. Its chamber is just big enough to cradle an egg and a few additions to enhance its deliciousness. Cøddler creator Jois Lundgren says it’s also a great way to use leftovers. The Äggcøddler was born almost by chance. When Lundgren inherited his father’s house in Sweden, he found a traditional egg coddler there which fascinated him. Since they were no longer being made, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Bon appétit!

Foxwood makes quirky furniture & children’s toys: each item is unique… not churned out by machines in their thousands, but hand-built by a bloke in a shed. We don’t see the point of sawing down a tree, making it into a box or whatever, and then throwing it away afterwards. We can do better than that. Naturally-aged, salvaged & reclaimed wood has a beauty all of its own with flaws & variations a-plenty, adding character and lustre, embellishing every item with its own story. Foxwood creates outdoor and indoor furniture, occasionally from selected new wood, but mainly from reclaimed and salvaged wood, some with timber from a 300yr-old barn! We frequently accept commissions for bespoke pieces. Whether it’s a characterful piece for your garden or terrace, or a fun item for children and grandchildren, each will be unique.

Three generations have influenced historical jewellery brand W. Salamoon & Sons We talk to the historical manufacture here
1.
‘Wadih Salamoun & Fils’ opened in the old souk of Beirut. You’ve come a
long way since, has the ethos of the company remained unchanged?
Since 1907 the central ethos of W.Salamoon and Sons, is that of creating relationships and bonds. That is a crucial element that we have followed through for over a century and is the fulcrum of our on-going success. It has also been the driving force of our brand identity as well as our chosen location choices.
2.
How diverse is your clientele?
Over the years we have created unique pieces that range from understated glamour to timeless gems that have attracted a wide range of loyal international clientele young and old. Besides our wide range of Middle Eastern and Gulf clientele which include royal families that we have built loyal ties with, the brand also appeals to a much broader international market as all our pieces are a fine balance between innovative design and timeless craftsmanship which connects to all that have a passion for quintessential quality and taste .
3.
All your pieces are unique. Does that in itself attract custom?
Yes, an integral element in our designs is that each piece that is made is exclusively in the heart of the W.Salamoon & Sons workshop, and our clients appreciate that they have a unique piece that belongs to them or to their loved ones every single time.
100
4.
What made you choose London, and Knightsbridge in particular?
Making the move to London was the answer to our loyal VIP clientele who resonate mainly in the Belgravia area. London is also the centre for the fine jewellery arena and holds a strong connection to a vastly cosmopolitan clientele base.
5.
The company is 110 years old this year – how important is tradition to you?
It is very important, especially being a family business. Celebrating 110 years for us is also celebrating over a hundred years of dedication and skill that we put into each piece. It is celebrating our clients which have allowed us to be part of their most important occasions throughout the years. That is the most important meaning of tradition for us.
6.
Do you find that trends can become tradition?
Yes, every tradition starts off as a new discovery. A trend can start as a new creative idea, which becomes loved and then becomes a timeless tradition.
7.
How has the world of fine jewellery changed over the last five years?
The world of fine jewellery is always fast paced and changing as it keeps up with a number of factors like fashion and market trends. For the past 5 years especially we have also seen factors like technology and the digital age become part of these changes. We as a brand progress and develop through keeping closely connected to the needs of our client base.
101
8.
We’ve heard you throw incredible parties. When’s the next one?
We certainly do try! We always make sure that we stay connected with our clients by highlighting our central ethos of maintaining bonds, and since we are approaching 111 years as a jewellery brand we find that a perfect reason to celebrate, so we are planning a surprise event for this occasion with our family of clients. Watch this space!
9.
Where do you see the company in another 110 years?
We hope that the next generation of our Salamoon family will aim to take the brand to new heights while carrying our unique heritage, passion and expertise, creating new memories for years to come. Website: www.wsalamoon.com / Email: london@wsalamoon.com

Art And Soul We speak to Simonida Pavicevic, co-founder of House of Fine Art London is inarguably one of the most important hubs of the art world, with only New York City to rival it. Simonida Pavicevic is an art advisor and co-founder of leading contemporary gallery House of Fine Art in St James's: "The younger generation of art collectors are coming through and we are seeing funky, contemporary, decorative art as an area of interest. Over the last few years we have seen a surge of interest in Asian artists Zhuang Hong Yi and Ilhwa Kim. These are not just fabulous creations to behold, but have also proven excellent investments." Social media is vitally important in art today, says Simonida, Instagram in particular: "Finding art through Instagram is massively significant to advisors and clients alike, in a way unimaginable even three years ago. Art fairs in London have a major part to play too of course, not just in the sense of sales, but people finding where their taste lies. This can also convert people: "Without even necessarily knowing it at the time, nonart lovers can become art lovers, and that's a beautiful thing to behold." House of Fine Art is different to other galleries in a crucial way; Simonida debuted the gallery with one eye on interior designers' needs, as this was her previous profession, and will forever remain a passion: "I trained in art, and went on to fitting out the interiors of private jets, which has given me an insight into how I can cater to both worlds, if you like. We are proud to have loyal interior design clients who we curate for, the likes of Lawson Robb, Katharine Pooley, Taylor Howes and Staffan Tollgard."
110
Simonida is patent about where House of Fine Art's advantage lies:
One artist that summarises this melting pot is Camille Hannah: "Her

geology, fossils, the gravitational layering of history. It talks to the old soul in us, despite appearing a simple concept at first.
111
Ilhwa Kim's intricacy is stunning to behold, I was fascinated by her work the second I clapped eyes on it. The concept of seeds in the universe, not to mention her use of hearts within that universe, has a romance that escapes the vast majority of contemporary artists. Her use of colour varies a lot, making her adaptable to different interior colour schemes. It's a humbling honour to work with such eminent talent, and I'm so proud to place their work in spaces that merit it."
112
As an art advisor, Simonida is asked about the fiscal side almost as
As little as ten years ago, the mere mention of contemporary art

you don't like it, you’re just hanging money, and money can be lost as well as won. In general the shrewdest collectors have not been speculators, but rather art lovers, romantics if you like." And there are many that have benefitted from Simonida's trained eye, not least Zhuang Hong Yi, a Chinese artist living in Rotterdam: "Zhuang is fantastically popular, and has a delicate touch that floored me when I first came across his work. He's immensely talented and I know that his star will continue to rise." The rise of Asian fine art internationally remains exponential, with no signs of slowing down.
While corporate giants, economists and politicians were proclaiming the Pacific Century, few took notice of the cultural currency quietly being minted by a new generation of artists throughout the region. What a difference a decade makes. Now, there’s hardly a museum on the planet that hasn’t showcased some facet of contemporary Asian art. Galleries scour the East, searching for the next big name. Collectors from all corners are in pursuit.
113 Asia is no longer a stalking ground for the world traveller sort, but a true complement to the global art community. Simonida doesn’t see the tastes of her clientele changing, rather evolving: "The demographic of my clientele hasn’t changed dramatically, although they are getting younger, and their tastes are getting broader, whereas the previous generation were more traditional. This is a good thing for the contemporary art world, as diversification leads to conversation, and debate, and taking on opinions that you hadn't considered previously. It's about people, not just the art itself." House of Fine Art are opening a gallery for the summer in Nammos Village, on the Greek island Mykonos. They will indeed be showing Yi and Kim, along with the likes of Bran Symondson, Pépé Gregoire, BAIN and Javier Martin: "While Asian artists are of interest to me, we show living artists in their prime, no matter where they may hail from. I like what I like, and fortunately my tastes are shared by others. I've been going to Mykonos for five years, I absolutely adore it. Nammos have this fabulous new cost-no-object development and it's the right time and place to open."
The infamous, geometrically surfaced, animal figurative works of Richard Orlinski will be dotted around the landscape, including a spectacular 2m tall Kong: "I've been dying to show Richard's pieces

ABORIGINAL ART UK ABORIGINAL ART ETHICALLY SOURCED DIRECTLY FROM THE ARTIST AND THEIR COMMUNITY
Aboriginal Art is associated with the landscape of Australia’s outback and the culture of its indigenous people. Whilst the work reflects this landscape and its stories, there is a striking diversity in the works representations. The colours at times can be rich and exuberant, and at others muted, making it the perfect partner for any home. A proud member of the Indigenous Art Code, which ensures the ethical treatment of the artist, Nadia still returns to Australia to buy works directly from the artist, visiting the Desert Mob Art Fair as well as the individual art communities. Originally from Sydney, Nadia studied the history of art in Florence and this awakened a passion for the work of her home country and how it was being developed. She started collecting aboriginal art on one of her many visits back to Australia. Aboriginal Art UK represents art from the Central Desert, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. Canvases range from small works, to large, dramatic pieces. Also available are poles, which are beautiful in their sculptural elegance. Aboriginal Art UK’s latest exhibition will be held at the Wet Paint gallery in Stroud, July 7th - 29th. For further details please visit:

Celebrating 50 years of Mercedes-AMG success
117
118
Affalterbach. AMG – these three letters stand worldwide for supreme automotive performance, exclusivity, efficiency and highly dynamic driving pleasure. In 2017, the company founded by Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher is celebrating its 50th anniversary. In the course of this half-century, Mercedes-AMG has recorded numerous successes in motor sport and through the development of unique roadgoing vehicles, thereby repeatedly underlining its position as a highly successful sports car and performance brand – and today this is truer than ever. Today, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG, the Affalterbachbased company represents the sporting spearhead of the Group. In this anniversary year, with an eye to the future, Mercedes-AMG will carry on the exceptional success story of what began as a two-man company. For each of the now around 1500 employees, the focus will be on the brand promise of "Driving Performance", which unites the core strengths of AMG: cutting-edge technology and a passion for dynamic, emotively appealing products. The company from Affalterbach stands worldwide for outstanding engine expertise, which includes not only development, but also the "one man, one engine" philosophy, which means that each engine is, so to speak, handcrafted by one engine builder.
119
With almost 100,000 units delivered in 2016, i.e. over 40 percent growth, and the biggest strategic model initiative in the company's history, AMG heads into this anniversary year with record figures under its belt. Mercedes-AMG expanded significantly in 2016 as a whole and, with growth of 44.1%, again significantly exceeded the best previous-year figures. With 99,235 vehicles delivered, the success story of Mercedes-Benz’s sports car and performance brand reached a new level. Unit sales have thus more than tripled since 2013. This dynamic growth was made possible by continuous further development of the performance models, which are in greater demand than ever. Yet the strategic broadening of the portfolio in recent years has also led to the successful development of new groups of customers. Hence, the company’s global success is not solely based on the popular eight-cylinder models of the 63 series. The compact 45 series models, along with the wide range of 43 series models, are finding favour with very many customers while placing AMG’s modern product portfolio on a broad, solid basis. The markets with the highest unit sales in the most successful year in the company’s history were once again the USA, Germany and China.
120
“We’re on the road to worldwide success with our strategic portfolio expansion and can look back on a sensational year. The 63 series models still constitute our core product line, and they continue to delight auto enthusiasts around the world. In addition, our AMG GT series, which was developed entirely in-house, is now available as a broad-based family, with which we have impressively demonstrated our expertise as a sports car brand. At the same time, our broad portfolio puts us in the perfect position for further sustained growth. Our task now is not just to celebrate the AMG success story, but, in one of the most exciting periods of automotive history, to help shape the performance of the future,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Development of new categories of customers through portfolio expansion 2016 saw the biggest strategic model initiative in the history of Mercedes-AMG: with over ten new models being added to the product portfolio, from January 2017 performance-minded customers are able to choose from over 50 models. In each category, Mercedes-AMG boasts a comprehensive and impressive product offering: from the most powerful standard-production four-cylinder compact to the sportily elegant S 65 with a superior twelve-cylinder engine, from saloons and estates in many different output classes, to a broad range of SUVs and coupés, to cabriolets and variously configured roadsters.
121
The available technology is among the best on offer in the respective vehicle categories, ranging from optimised rear-wheel drive to state-of-the-art all-wheel drive, as well as from a dualclutch transmission to a sporty nine-gear automatic transmission. At the same time, the sports car and performance brand has won entirely new groups of customers with its recently launched 43 series models. The first such vehicles were unveiled by MercedesAMG at the Detroit Auto Show two years ago. The 43 series models come with a powerful and efficient six-cylinder engine. Other hallmarks of the 43 series derivatives include special transmission tuning with shorter shift times as well as AMG-specific axle designs and suspensions, powerful brake components and other various

The continuous pursuit to push the limits of excellence and irradiate jewels to their supreme potential attracts and excites the world’s most discerning buyers. There is more to be said, more to be written, more to be done and more to experience; at the very essence of it all remains an insatiable desire for growth and longevity. Julien Riad Sahyoun Julien Riad Sahyoun has always had an affinity with nature. Fascinated by a myriad of untold mysteries hidden within the Earth, he has collected gems, rocks, fossils and minerals from a young age. A deep-rooted connection with the natural world began in his homeland, Morocco. Journeys into the Saharan wilderness heralded enchanting, earthly treasures, each one precious and unique.
