TOWER BRIDGE PENTHOUSE BY TG STUDIO TG-Studio (London) were tasked with the interior design by Berkeley Homes to make this a very special penthouse for this stunning 5200 sq.ft. duplex penthouse at a new development just a few steps from London’s iconic Tower Bridge. Through the selection of wall finishes, furniture and accessories we wanted to create a sense of uniqueness and understated luxury for this show apartment that would appeal to investors both within the UK and abroad. The property has a grand entrance hall complete with stunning architecturally designed l spiral staircase which leads up to an unusually large 4000 sq.ft. terrace with outdoor kitchen and dining space for twelve, affording panoramic views of London taking in almost every major London landmark. The key here was to zone the space into a relaxing area complete with Jacuzzi and sculpture garden, and a party area. On the main living floor below there is an open plan living/dining space and kitchen as well as three large en-suite bedrooms and dressing rooms as well as a wrap-around balcony on some 2000 sq.ft.

8

Starting with the layout Thomas immersed himself in the lifestyle of potential buyers to start to build the design in his mind. As the owner could be an international buyer it was important to make the design universal so it could appeal to someone from Russia or China for example but also have a nod to its location. What we created was an international design with a strong London touch. Buyers of this type of property want to buy a bit of London so we tried to express that. So there are some tweeds in there and some buttoned furniture. The sofa has a touch of Englishness to it. Most of the furniture has a Mid-20th Century feel to it. The Dean armchairs in the living room are from Alter London. There are Ventura lounge chairs in the entrance hall with an Acerbis Creso table, which has an opulent gold leaf base. The artworks are purposefully eclectic but stand back from the main space without intruding.

9

10

There is a piece by emerging Romanian artist Dumitrache Ciprian and another by Susan Kinsella both sourced from Saatchi Art. In partnership with the artist Carol Peace we designed a sculpture garden for the terrace and placed a number of her pieces throughout the apartment, including the beautiful Red Scarf that greets you as you enter. The walls throughout are adorned with artworks by emerging artists courtesy of Saatchi Art. The penthouse was subsequently purchased with everything included and Thomas is now working on an even more expensive penthouse in Central London. www.tg-studio.co.uk

Similarly, in the master dressing room a mirrored panel conceals a secret door to the study – an essential yet discreet fire exit. The master bedroom is styled in neutral tones to create a calm and sophisticated feel. The use of dark stained wood and accessories in accents of rich purple form a dramatic contrast to the cream tones which underpin the design. The elegant scheme used in the bedroom flows effortless down into the dressing room which is positioned on a slightly lower level. The two guest bedrooms were designed with a similar air of sophistication. The first is designed in tones of silver and blue, whilst the second dazzles with hints of burnt orange. Completing the journey through the apartment, the client’s study, fitted with bespoke made cabinetry and a desk crafted from aged bronze, is a masterclass is understated elegance. With meticulous attention to detail, the Design by UBER team created a scheme that was sympathetic to the architectural style of the building whilst adhering to every element of the client brief, transforming a construction site into an exquisitely styled boutique apartment. designbyuber.com www.designbyuber.com/portfolios/apartment-bowdon/

BELGRAVIA TOWNHOUSE BY MAURIZIO PELLIZZONI Website: www.mauriziopellizzoni.co.uk / Photography: Gianni Franchellucci immagine3.com

27

Southwest from Buckingham Palace, London’s Belgravia district host some of the world’s most coveted and costly homes. Just off Eaton Square, this early 19th century five story terraced townhouse in Belgravia is faced with carefully restored pale brown brick. The property combines period charm and contemporary living by blending art, design and family heirlooms. It's unique because it’s a corner house where light enters on three sides, which eliminates the dark zones typical of these properties.

28

The owners, a professional couple just married and now with three children had very clear ideas; they wanted, a comfortable family home not a showhome. The only big constraint was that the work had to be done in record time, before the birth of their third child. The tight design schedule had its advantages, forcing quick and intuitive design decisions. As part of the client’s brief, Maurizio decided to use a lot of the furniture the client already had from their previous homes, transforming familiar pieces simply with new upholstery. Contemporary items from Italian brands such as B&B Italia, Poliform and Lema were chosen for the interiors, also some luxury and timeless pieces from Ralph Lauren Home to give an extra luxurious feel. This combination gives this five-storey townhouse a simultaneously youthful and sophisticated air, where the eclectic mixture of furnishings and art reflects the owners interests. Miraculously, the project was completed on schedule and on budget which has launched a friendship between the couple and Maurizio.

Maurizio and his team quickly understood that we were stretched and shielded us from all the admin happening in the background so we only had to focus on big decisions. Maurizio and his team were very generous with their time and supervised every delivery and installation at the house. Towards the end he spent hours helping us decide on which wall or shelf to place such or such piece of art. Impressively, he kept the same patience and motivation until the very end, to deliver a fully completed project. It has been a pleasure working with Maurizio and his team and the end result in our home is stunning and super cool. LAGUNA RUGS Q&A BY ANTONY HOLTER

www.lagunarugs.com

+44(0)20 7373 7471

As people may be aware the Laguna Rug brand sources it’s materials from Nepal. What kind of influence’s does Nepal bring to the product? The influences are in the craftsmanship and skill of the Nepali weavers. The age old tradition of Nepali rug-weaving is the main element to the timelessness of each hand-made rug. Each stage of the rug production goes through a time consuming process from the early point of shearing the sheep and washing the wool then drying the wool naturally. Carding the wool and then spinning into the yarn ready for weaving. A standard spec rug can take one of our weavers to hand-knot between 10 and 11cm a day, their technique is also done at a fast pace, even I as a trained weaver find hard to replicate.

39 Laguna does some fantastic work, partnering with the global charity Goodweave. How important is it to you that the company continues working with this great cause to raise awareness of the Charity and to help continue the Charities great work? It is really important and ethical for me as an individual but also as a business! It not only creates an awareness but also feeds and supports the mechanism of the areas that the charity is working so hard to stop child labour in the rug and textile industries of the East. Thanks to Goodweave’s work, children have been able to go to school and get an education as opposed to once having been subjected to poor working conditions in the rug and textiles factories from an early age because many came from poor backgrounds. Goodweave has a rehabilitation centre (Hamro Ghar) in Nepal which is the nerve centre for Nepal's rescued children. Some of the rescued children are aged between 10 and 14 and are often illiterate, overworked and physically abused. We are proud to support Goodweave and in also knowing every rug we sell benefits them financially which then also helps continue their great work! Recently Laguna has partnered with Squire & Partners on the transformation of the former Victorian printworks in Southwark, London. Could you tell me how this partnership came about and how Laguna played a part in this fantastic project? We had previously collaborated with Squire and Partners on previous projects and were very excited when we were asked to be involved with this one. The designs for this rug collection were produced by Squire and Partners, Eley Kishimoto and ourselves. The brief was to create a collection of designs which grounded the internal social communal areas through a series of different rug designs. The rug collection had a series of bold block patterns and another collection of flat woventextured rugs made to balance some of the busier patterns of the other rugs they were grouped with.

40

Whilst on the topic of recent projects, I believe you have recent been involved in a project with Soho House. Could you tell us a little bit more about this project? We have just put together a re-launch for a special Soho House location (secret at this stage I’m afraid!). But the inspiration for these rug designs were Industrial meets Art-Deco for one of their Spa locations. The use of soft colour tones and natural wool and linen rugs were key for creating the desired look whist still retaining the natural spa elements within the industrial style space they sat in. We are currently also working on further designs for other Soho House locations.

41 Obviously the brand is very established and produces some amazing bespoke products, could you tell us what has been the main inspiration for you? My inspiration is that I really enjoy working closely with my clientsand help them develop a unique piece which is personal to them and their project briefs. The craftsmanship of producing these rugs is deeply appreciated by myself and I thoroughly enjoy developing the designs directly with our Nepal workshop and my clients. I would like to think that an understanding of the product comes across when I am discussing designs, colours and textures of the rugs with my clients. Apart from the bespoke pieces we have done I have also produced a range of rugs of our own and currently working on more new designs to grow our own stock range. Within the interior design world companies can thrive or fall when it comes to trends with a lot of companies being too late to adapt to changing trends. Would you consider yourselves as trend setters? I would not really describe Laguna as trend setters. We focus on whats really important to the clients brief, however having a trend awareness does come into play when creating the designs of the rugs with a feel of current and future colours and textures. Generally a lot of clients have their own ideas of what they want to achieve and I can guide them through the process but sometimes they simply want something timeless which will carry a lasting look in the space they are creating. What trends can you see developing as we come into the winter months? Textured carved rugs and shag piled geometrics are popular trends in rug designs. One off abstract paintings and watercolour rug designs are statement pieces in the space they sit in. Printed rugs are also having a breakthrough while the more traditional rugs like Persian and Killim’s are still very popular and will continue to hold a long-lasting place within interiors. Colours seem to be moving towards a traditional rich and warm pallet with navy blues and rich deep greens sitting along side classical natural colours of Tofu, Almond, soft grey and deep terracotta.

Design Brief: To create a contemporary family home that is both relaxed for everyday family living, whilst striking & functional for regular entertaining & holding the clients’ company corporate events. As the house is big enough to accommodate dedicated rooms, rather than the need to be multi-functional, each room needed to be tailored exactly to how they would be used, allowing for more creative freedom for design aesthetics within each zone. To push the clients’ boundaries on contemporary design as the clients have historically opted for a more classic & traditional design. Key aspect of the project: Creative freedom to push the clients’ boundaries & imagination, working with a blank canvas as the property was a new build.

Why does the design work so well?

How do you feel the design integrates into the wider environment?

'MANOR'-STYLE EDWARDIAN FIVE-BEDROOM HOUSE COMPLETELY REFURBISHED TO MEET CONTEMPORARY DEMANDS

Award-winning architecture and interior design practice gpad london has finished the complete refurbishment of an Edwardian five-bedroom house in Wadham Gardens, Primrose Hill. The dated and dilapidated house has been transformed into a highly desirable, luxurious dwelling with an elegant mezzanine library, a modernist-inspired stained glass window, artisan-made chandeliers and a basement extension with a car dock, cinema, swimming pool and gym. All bedrooms have ensuites and the top floor can be divided into two suites with a concealed partition. Standout features Library Wadham Gardens originally had two ground floor reception rooms, which were timber-panelled in the 1970s. The flow has been improved by connecting the spaces with a mezzanine library which has been built above an opening between the rooms. The new staircase to the mezzanine, designed and installed by Wilder Creative, forms a sculptural piece of art in the corner and a focal point between the two rooms. A roof light floods the living space below and an artisan-designed chandelier adds eye-catching detail.

Website: www.gpadlondonltd.com / Photography: Peter Savage, Aston Chase

62

Statement main staircase A three metre-high stained glass window floods the brand new central staircase, which replaces three remote individual staircases. The original, garish 1970s window has been replaced by a design inspired by a leadlight piece seen in a Japanese museum by gpad's Technical Director Jeremy Wiggins. It was handmade by Tenby & Penny Co. Ltd in Walthamstow Village. The staircase handrail is entirely made of timber, spray painted by a classic car specialist to achieve an opulent sheen. Wood flooring throughout the house is made of Merton Oak.

Kitchen To bring the outside in, new 20mm frame glazing by Sky-Frame was specified for the back wall of the garden-facing kitchen. Replacing the old-style casement windows, this ensures the occupiers can enjoy their garden even from indoors. gpad decided to keep the unusual, low yet wide window by the sink. The interplay between the window and the rectangular elements in the kitchen – the joinery, dining table and breakfast bar – combined with the natural textures in earthy shades, give the room a sense of movement. Jeremy Wiggins says: “In this line of work it is a little heartbreaking to see a beautiful period house fallen on hard times. The best reward comes when you can make it fit for a family to live in whilst supporting local artisan makers in the process, such as the Walthamstow-based family business who made the stained glass window. The project was not without its challenges, however – a Network Rail tunnel three metres away from the basement extension forced us to rethink the basement plan, which serendipitously resulted in a more efficient layout.” Owner Adam Andrews explains: “This is not just another ostentatious house with a mega basement. It would have been far easier to knock down a building and start from scratch than the riskier and more detailed process of holding up an existing building whilst putting a basement in. From the outside it's lovely, Edwardian, double-fronted and with all original features kept. Yet when you come in you have all these things you'd find in a house with an eight-figure price tag. I especially love the carlift; you just press a button to lift a curtain, and you see your beautiful classic car behind a glass, like a museum piece.”

63

Basement and opulent leisure suite Originally a coal cellar, the newly extended basement has high ceilings to give it the same feel as the rest of the house. It includes a cinema, car dock, pool, gym and steamroom, and a dramatically lit walk-in wine cave. Behind a frameless glass wall, the wine cellar is a design feature which allows for the display of an impressive collection of vintages. The car dock elevates up to the driveway and enables the occupier to showcase their vehicle to visitors. Accompanied by a steamroom and an overlooking gym, the swimming pool measures a generous 4x10m, with a Jacuzzi and a staircase connecting it directly to the garden. The extended basement also includes a plush 8-seater cinema with sparkling LED lighting, a guest bedroom with a marble ensuite, a two-storey plant room and an AV room for controlling technology throughout the building.

OSMO REVIVES WEATHERED TIMBER CLADDING

1

The owner of a two-storey property in Brighton was looking for a wood finish to revive the exterior timber cladding on his family home. After hearing about Osmo UK’s reputation for good quality sustainable finishes, she knew that its products would not only provide a long-lasting finish, but that it would enhance the natural character of the wood. Rachel Forrest felt that the timber shiplap on the front and rear of her home was beginning to look dull and tired, and wanted to find a wood finish that would rejuvenate the existing cladding and keep it in good condition for years to come.
