JAGUAR I-PACE Jaguar have won the race to design and build a fully electric SUV. The I-PACE is the perfect blend of class, comfort and speed.

future... that future being electric. Many still have reservations when it comes to electric vehicles, mostly being centred around one of three things: range anxiety, charging times and speed. If you are one of these people, then Jaguar have the answer. Issue 33 2018

Ian Callum, Director of Design for Jaguar, explained that

in each axle delivering all –wheel drive and again, contributing

the reason for this design choice in the past was due to the

required. When designing a standard car, you start with the huge mechanical parts that are necessary - the placement of these isn’t too flexible. For example, there is no getting around the huge 4 litre V8 in your typical Range Rover of the past. Add in the transmission gear and drive shaft, and before you know it the proportions of the rest of the car are almost dictated by the mechanics underneath. However, this wasn’t the case with the I-Pace which has been completely designed from the ground up with the only large mechanical pieces being the two high efficiency electric motors. Packaging them concentrically with the single-speed transmissions makes them as compact as possible. Their position

For those longer journeys, a quick 40-minute stop at one of the UK’s many public rapid chargers would top you up to 80% charge. If instead you wished to charge the I-PACE overnight at home, the same battery life would take 10 hours, so perfect for an overnight charge. Upon driving the car, it quickly became clear quite how powerful the motors were. It boasts 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds, with 696Nm of torque. Now there are not many cars which could put such a smile on your face when you put the pedal down, double up as a great family car, and on top of all of that, cope with off-road conditions with extreme temperatures as low as -40°C. The I-Pace really left ourselves wanting for nothing.

As for the interior of the vehicle, it was simply superb. Exactly the sort of quality that Jaguar are famed for. As the Director of Design, Ian Callum described “Being inside the I-Pace is to experience something special and that is what a Jaguar is all about”. With a Touch Pro Duo infotainment system combined with the floating centre console, it affords a huge amount of room to stretch out and enjoy the ride as a passenger, and as a drive it gives you full control. We were especially pleased to see actual switches and buttons to control the climate system. For those that have driven a Tesla, trying to adjust the centre console on the move can be worrisome at best. To top this off, a large glass panoramic sun roof runs the entire length of the car, flooding the cabin with light and amplifying the sense of space. After spending a weekend with the car, driving through the stunning Algarve we all agreed, Jaguar have excelled. With the I-PACE being designed and engineered from the ground up in the UK the feeling of pride was strong. Once again, Jaguar, an iconic British brand are pushing the boundaries producing an outstanding car that beats their rivals on price, luxury and finish. With prices starting at £63,495, with a further £4500 government grant available, the future is truly here...

BICESTER HERITAGE: A BRITISH SUCCESS STORY Just five years ago, the site of RAF Bicester in the heart of Oxfordshire was a shadow of the hub of activity that saw it through decades and decades of military activity, including two world wars. Buildings were almost totally unused, and its legacy and history were very much under threat. In fact, the site was placed on Historic England’s ‘At Risk’ register in 2008 and designated the most at risk of all defence estates in Britain. But when British entrepreneur Daniel Geoghegan touched down at the former RAF Bicester in 2013, he didn’t see a derelict site in danger – he saw opportunity. Geoghegan set about making the site the UK’s only hub for historic motoring – a one-stop shop for all things classic cars with a complete community feel. Now five years since his acquisition from the Ministry of Defence, it’s safe to say Geoghegan’s mission has been well and truly accomplished and the days of being ‘At Risk’ are well and truly over.

Now named Bicester Heritage, the site caters to over 35 specialist businesses on site ranging from historic grand prix car preparers and magneto specialists, to dealers and exhaust manufacturers. Together they provide a supportive ecosystem that is revolutionising historic car ownership. Bicester Heritage is a hub for historic motoring excellence and recognised as the national centre for a £5.5bn per annum industry that employs over 34,000 skilled people. Its collective turnover of over £20m makes it the largest player in the industry – and it’s set to grow exponentially with a global reach. Collectively, Bicester Heritage is all about driving the future of the past. The unique ecosystem acts as ‘marina-like’ cluster, promoting skills and expertise, employment, qualified customer footfall, shared business incubation and aggregate growth. Geoghegan and his skilled team have rolled our four phases of restoration so far, with exciting plans ahead for the likes of an on-site hotel – cementing Bicester Heritage as the ultimate classic car destination for enthusiasts from all over the globe.

Designed for the sea. Oscar3 Mylius 65’, designed by Alberto Simeone in collaboration with the P+F studio, is the result of a perfect synthesis of form and function. Made entirely of carbon, it is the natural evolution of the preceding 60’- 65’ hulls. A nautical jewel in which the main theme is the seafaring life, with strong references to classic boats that have been reinterpreted from a contemporary perspective.

The interiors are interwoven with colour themes of smoked eucalyptus and white, and varied puttytoned hues become the protagonist in all the leather elements, such as the dining area sofa, and the main living area of the boat, envisaged as a large, open, very bright space. Great care has been paid to the features and ergonomic design of the smallest spaces, without sacrificing the outcome of understated and contemporary luxury. The spacious worktop in the kitchen and the two aft twin guest cabins, each with a dedicated bathroom and shower, are clear examples of this.

CHLOE FALL 2018 COLLECTION

34

The Art of Luxury

Issue 33 2018

The Fall 2018 collection designed by Natacha Ramsay-Levi evolves a confident through line from the debut runway collection, by building upon a feminine wardrobe with timeless, urban élan. The role of archetypal garments informed the season, with perennial daywear classics emphasizing Chloé signatures: the blanket cape, the caban coat, the riding blazer, and the ‘saharienne’ jacket have been imbued with subtle equestrian details and masculine fabrics including tweed wool, Prince of Wales checks, wool gabardine, velvet and smooth calfskin. A collage of layering transposes patterns and textures: crepe roll-neck tops, ribbed lurex knitwear, and zipped polos are worn beneath sharp tailoring, an open ‘dandy’ collared blouse, or long-sleeved shirt dresses. Elongated silhouettes result from streamlined volumes and high waists cinched by knotted masculine belts. Trousers sit high and short, often enhanced with dynamic shapes, whether slim topstitched jeans cuffed below the knee, wide cropped crepe flares, or a cotton jodhpur with quilted patches. Geometric and floral prints from the Chloé archives evoke a midcentury Modernist touch. Curlicue ‘C’ embroideries; the ‘O’ (Chloé’s ‘eye’ letter) realised as buckles and rings; prancing horse appliqués; all-over sequins; and metallic snap-studs offer subtle embellishment. Contrasts of matte and shine are tinted in tones of rust, wood, terracotta, mocha, midnight blue, grey, nuances of beiges, whites and khakis.

A new Chloé sneaker makes an assertive statement this season. High and low top styles boast a juxtaposition of natural elements such as cotton straps and leather detailing with nylon panelling and a moulded utility sole. Pointed boots, meanwhile, define the silhouette: built on a stacked Cuban heel, they extend as thigh-high laced cuissardes, or zip to mid-calf worn with striped rugby socks. The Drew Bijou, introduced during Natacha Ramsay-Levi’s runway debut, comes in new finishes such as burnished ‘sfumato’ tobacco leather, leopard print calfskin or rounded quilting. The Roy bag another of Ramsay-Levi’s new designs, comes this season as a bucket bag, featuring a canvas drawstring insert and finishes ranging from yellow diamond python, prancing horse embroidery, and burgundy calfskin. Finally, the esoteric illustrations of Rithika Merchant are isolated and transformed as delicate jewellery: hands, eyes, leaves and an articulated feminine form become seductive 36

The Art of Luxury

Issue 33 2018

Making the Cut, the second book by Savile Row tailor Richard Anderson was released on Thursday 19th April by publishers Thames & Hudson. The new book is a lively bible of sartorial know-how full of insight, information and inspiration. Richard Anderson started his career at Huntsman as an apprentice at just 17 years old and is now well known as one of Savile Row’s modern master cutters. Richard and his business partner Brian Lishak, founded Richard Anderson Ltd. and opened their doors at 13 Savile Row in 2001. The Row is known for its bespoke heritage and unique services. In Making the Cut Richard discusses how, in the 21st century, tailors are embracing unusual fabrics, new colours and modern tastes to update the long-held traditions and reach an ever-growing client base.

Richard referrers to the book as the “sartorial kaleidoscope which emphasises how the Savile Row of today attracts a new kind of customer with individual tastes as well as the traditional British social elite. Richard Anderson has done well to maintain the heritage of Savile Row whilst offering more original, striking designs which would not have been produced 20 years ago. Since Richard Anderson Ltd. was founded, it has been a driving force in the modern Savile Row and Richard’s latest book shares some of the most innovative designs along with their history, information on how specific garments are made and advice on working with a variety of fabrics, set alongside photographs and original drawings.

ALL THAT GLITTERS… Suffolk based jewellery designer, Emily Mortimer Hendry celebrates a year of striking gold

The eldest of four sisters, Emily Mortimer Hendry has carved a path as one of the UK’s most exciting gemstone jewellers, born from the desire to create beautiful gemstone jewellery to suit each of her equally individual sisters. In the short time since the brand was born, Emily’s pieces have received critical acclaim, including being listed with some of the industries greatest stockists and gathering the attention of stylish stars including Lottie Moss, Caroline Flack, Binky Felstead and Louisa Thompson to name but a few. The past year has been a landmark year for Emily with new collection launches, a busy show circuit and not to mention designing pieces to come. Emily says: “There’s nothing more magical than seeing my designs transformed from screen to a tangible piece. I am a complete perfectionist when it comes to jewellery. I like every element of a new piece to be visually stunning.” Emily Mortimer Jewellery offers stylish statement pieces to add a pop of colour to any look at accessible price points. Her collections are vibrant and versatile, designed for both the everyday and extraordinary occasion. Pieces combine both 14ct gold and sterling silver and are set with a striking array of technicolour gemstones and diamonds, priced from £30 to £1,900. The self-confessed jewellery addict seeks to create a range of fun and exceptional statement pieces that are exciting to wear. Emily says of her success: “Everywhere I have worked and studied I have tried to learn as much as possible.

£3361.69 BY STOLIE Latvian socialite Ilona Stolie has become something of a style phenomenon both in her home country and across the world. In struggling to find the perfect, simple design jewellery for everyday wear, she had a brainwave: “I was searching for earrings of flawless quality, ideal size and weight. I also struggled to find elegant chokers and other items that I could really fall in love with. So I decided I should do it myself. I have always loved being creative and I thought this was the ideal solution to my problem.” And that is how By Stolie was born. While ruby is her favoured gemstone, she still indulges in the use of a girl’s best friend. RUWAYA Ruwaya is an old Arabic name with two beautiful meanings. The first, ‘to quench a thirst’, alludes to the feeling of finding something truly beautiful encapsulated in a piece of fine jewellery, while the second, ‘storytelling’, speaks to the rich heritage of Arabic lore. Founder Fatima Al Dhaeri has embedded her life in wearable works of art. In her formative years Fatima worked with her father at his renowned fine jewellery brand Amwaj, where she began her journey creating one-off pieces. Moving on to study at the Gemological Institute of America, Fatima has now curated a brand that takes the natural beauty of precious stones and transforms them into glittering pieces that capture the imagination of the exotic sights, sounds, smells and traditions of Arabia. There is nothing quite like the way in which Ruwaya pieces are crafted. Using only the finest 18k gold, many of the pieces consist of sliced diamonds and white pavé diamonds, which are delicately bound together and layered. www.ruwayajewellery.com @ruwaya_jewellery
