and is dedicated to all the wonderful mothers. Being a mom is not easy. When you want to get pregnant, sometimes it is more difficult than you think. Carrying the baby for nine months and felling their movements inside you, and then they are born and the journey begins! Your life and the way you see life will change forever. You don’t appreciate the meaning of a mother until you have your own kids and you know that you will give your life for them. When I found out I was pregnant a friend of mine told me to rest now because even when your kids are thirty years old your thoughts are with them. Now my kids are 6 and 2 but I’m sure she was right. I am constantly thinking about them. In this issue we interview Maria Alejandra Requena. We are going to talk about her two sides, a mother and a journalist. Also, we have an interview with Ana VeigaMilton, a mother who inspires through her charitable causes. After the heartbreaking tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School we decided to have an article called “Talking about gun violence to our kids”. All our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those families affected by this tragedy. You are not sure if what you are feeding your kids is healthy? Read the article “Cancer Protective Food Tips for Your Family” to find out. And because we want your kids to enjoy the summer, we have “Miami Kids Summer Camp Guide #2” Happy Mother’s Day to all of you beautiful mothers and thanks for all you do for your kids. Only another mom can relate to how hard our job is raising kids. A special thanks for the best mom and grandmother in the world, my mother.

reparing, not scaring our children about gun violence is needed now more than ever. Using age-appropriate words and explanations is critical. It is important to assure them that they can express any concern they may have and that you will always answer as best and honestly as you can. Superintendent of Miami-Dade Schools, Alberto Carvalho, wrote a powerful, touching letter to all parents, “On February 14, 2018, the Broward County community experienced a heartbreaking tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School. Through a shameless act of violence committed in the sanctuary of a school building, 17 students and staff

members lost their lives. Dozens of others were injured, and many more have been left with emotional trauma from the events that transpired that day. The recent events in Broward County have undoubtedly devastated our community and the entire nation. While we hold our loved ones close and attempt to heal from this tragedy, I want to assure you that the safety of students remains our highest priority. You can support us in protecting our schools by reporting any suspicious activity to 305-995-COPS(2677) or 305-471-TIPS (8477). Remember, if you see something, say something. I trust that our collective efforts can help keep our children safe.”
Powerful words from Mahatma Gandhi “You must be the change you wish to see in the world”
I have four grandchildren in elementary school and two in high school. I had several conversations with the younger ones following the tragic incident to inquire what they knew, thought and felt. We focused on the positives which included mentioning the heroes and the first responders that rushed the injured to the hospitals and how brave the teachers and students were. They

now think it is good that the classrooms are locked after the bell rings. I also asked them if they knew of any homes that had a gun. (Fortunately they said no). I suggest that before your child goes to a friend’s house for a playdate or party, you ask the other parent if there is a weapon in their home and if it is safely secured. To be clear, this is not about the controversial topic of gun control. It is about safety. If your child had a food allergy you would be diligent about informing everyone. Asking about a gun is also critical. I am the former CEO of the non-profit, The NonViolence Project which under my leadership for 18 years reached over 700,000 students with violence prevention programs. We focused on increasing selfesteem and self-worth in our youngest citizens which set the path to positive selfdirected behavior. I am proud that thousands of students signed our Peace Pledge: My behavior will set an example for others, and I will seek harmony for myself, my family, my school and my community. I pledge to be a peaceful person in all that I do.

Ana, please tell us about your background, upbringing and education? My parents emigrated from Cuba when I was one. After a year in Spain and the Canary Islands, our family arrived in New Jersey. My father worked as an engineer for Bell Labs while earning a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. We moved to Miami, the dream city, when my dad secured a transfer to then Southern Bell prior to my starting 1st grade. We lived in Westchester, and I attended Southwest Miami HS, graduating Valedictorian. I earned a full academic scholarship to UM where I met my future husband Cecil. I studied Electrical Engineering, graduated with a 4.0, and then worked as an engineer at Bellsouth until I got married and attended UM Law School on a full merit scholarship. I graduated Summa Cum Laude and our family started to grow. Three babies later, I was a stay-at-home mom and dedicated myself to community involvement and philanthropy - determined on making South Florida a great place for all its residents and for the next generations.
As a mother, what is the most valuable trait you teach your kids? The most valuable trait I have taught my kids is to make the most of every minute and every experience by being responsible, conscientious, kind, organized, openminded, and efficient. A smile really does change one’s disposition and attitude. Now when you see your kids all grown up, would you go back and change any part of their upbringing? If I were given the opportunity to timetravel backward and change something in my kids’ upbringing, I would not take it for fear that my world and my children’s world would become different. I really like where I am and I could not be prouder of all my kids. My mistakes and consequent apologies and self-reflection serve to strengthen me and my relationships. I do not mess with what works - call it my little utopia. What is the mission of the Milton Foundation? The José Milton Foundation focuses on improving the quality of life in South Florida through education, research, and healthcare. Most recently, we donated the José Milton Foundation Recording Studio
at Miami Arts Studio 6-12 to Miami-Dade County Public Schools - the first of its kind in the USA. All children in the county will be able to professionally record their music, original songs, speeches, performances, for free and start their portfolios. I know you are very active with charities. Which ones do you enjoy the most? I cannot pick a favorite charity as all work to improve our world. Do you want to end with any special message for all the mothers? Mothers (and Fathers) are the greatest influencers of their children. We must advocate for children and encourage them to participate in the community, learn about social issues, and to be openminded. Listen to them at eye-level and with interest. Challenge them when they are wrong or confused, and delve into conversation about random topics. After school (and even now sometimes), I always asked my kids, “What was the worst part of your day - the thing you least liked? How did you handle it?” Then I asked, “What was the best part of your day? What made it special?”

tips for your family
A parent’s primary focus is ensuring the safety and health of their child. Often times, parents may find it difficult to navigate the plethora of information available. As a registered dietitian nutritionist, I often find parents asking me what they should or should not feed their child in order to prevent cancer. Here is a quick rundown on the do’s and don’ts of cancer prevention.
12
What should you eat more of? Fruits and vegetables are packed with phytochemicals. These can act as antioxidants and can also improve immune function and work on cells to minimize the growth or spread of cancerous cells. Carotenoids, a precursor to Vitamin A, can be found in green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, and orange vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes. Flavonoids, also found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, tea and soy, has been shown to slow the growth of breast cancer cells in laboratory studies. Specific foods to try to increase flavonoid intake include acai berries, blueberries, bananas, and apricots. In addition to phytochemicals, fruits and vegetables offer a low-calorie, high fiber and nutrient packed snack or side dish as meals.
Miami Kids Magazine April-May 2018
What should you limit or avoid? If children, or adults, consume large quantities of high-sugary foods and beverages, the balance of calories may be tipped in a direction that promotes excessive weight gain. Weight gain is a known contributor to over 10 different types of adult cancers. This does not mean to remove healthy sources of carbohydrate (sugar), such as whole grains, beans and lentils. These foods can actually offer a variety of vitamins and minerals that can safely meet the needs of the growing child. Processed meat has received a lot of attention regarding its role in carcinogenesis since the World Health Organization added it as a Group 1, and therefore known, carcinogen. A carcinogen is a substance which can disrupt the normal cell life cycle and cause cancer cells to form.
Watch out for myths! It is best to reference a reputable source. The United States Department of Agriculture provides a database for finding which foods are high in different nutrients such as phytochemicals. The American Cancer Society and the American Institute for Cancer Research offer information on cancer prevention through food choices and healthy activity patterns. These organizations analyze and review years of research when making their recommendations.

M
aria Alejandra Requena
A Mom and a Journalist
María Alejandra Requena is one of CNN en Español’s anchors. She presents “Café CNN” a morning news show, designed to start the day in a smart way. She has interviewed different personalities including George Clooney, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Anthony Hopkins, and Marc Anthony.
“Mariale” has been recognized for her performance as a communicator throughout her career. She won a Daytime Emmy in 2015-2016 for “Café CNN” as the “Best Spanish-language television program in the United States.” She also received the “Premio Carteles” for her outstanding work defending freedom of expression, and the award “Los mejores del año” and the Golden Award for being the Presenter of the Year. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, she studied Advertising and Marketing and also studied Radio and Television at the Universidad Central de Venezuela. Miami Kids Magazine had the opportunity to sit with her and ask her a few questions to know more about her personal life. 1.- In your own words, who is Maria Alejandra Requena? I am a Venezuelan mom, a Latina mom. I try to be very involved in my kid’s Andres and Miranda’s life. Andres is 14 and plays baseball and Miranda is 12 years old and is taking acting and art lessons. It is not easy to be able to do everything, every day, but I try. First of all, I am a mom but as many
16
others, a working woman and a wife to Ismael Hurtado for almost 20 years. 2. - How do you balance your time between work and family? I have no idea (laughs). I guess I try to be very organized. I start my day at 3:30 AM. Yes, AM so I can do my hair and makeup. At 4:45 I am at CNN working on a computer, writing the stories and the news that we have for Café CNN that day. By 10:00 AM the show is over but we are on call for any breaking news until noon. Around 12:30 PM I usually head back home to prepare lunch for the family. Whenever I have the time, I try to take a nap but it is not frequent. It helps when my husband is not away working (he is a pilot). Any extra time that I have available I use to go to the gym, do some Yoga or walk outside. 3.- Do you have any regrets about anything professionally or personally in your past? No, not really. Maybe I don’t make enough time for myself. I always put my kid’s activities and work before me. I try to be the best mom, wife, professional, and take care of the house, but usually I sacrifice “me” and that is not right, so I am working on it. 4.- How is Maria Alejandra as a mother? I am a very loving mom. I tell my kids all the time that I
Miami Kids Magazine April-May 2018
love them. I talk to them and tell them that they can talk to me about anything but of course; it doesn’t work all the time, especially with my teenage son. I also try to be very strict when I ground them for bad grades or bad behavior. I take away their computers or block their phones with an App that only allows them to make and receive texts and calls. (To be honest, I used to take away their phones but after the Parkland shooting my husband and I decided that they should have their phones, God forbids, something happens at their school.) 5.- What do your kids call you? My kids call me “Ma” with a Southern accent. I don’t know why but it has been like that since they were little.
CREDITS: Maria Alejandra is wearing Vix Paula Hermanny. Miranda is wearing Piccoli Principi. Make up and hair: Eli’D Salon Nails and Spa Photographer: Enrique Tubio
6.- In what ways do you think your kids are similar and different than you? Physically they are both like a combination of my husband and me. They look alike but their personalities are very different, Andres is more outgoing, polite, noble, and amicable like me. He also likes to watch and play sports like his father. Miranda is more of an introvert and shy until she really gets to know the person. She doesn’t like to get out of the house too much on a daily basis. She loves to travel. She is a little messy in her room, like a good artist, (laughs) but she is super sweet and likes to talk to me and tell me everything that is going on in her life. 7.- What are your dreams and future aspirations? My dream is to see them happy and to know that they will be a good man and a good woman someday. I really hope to be part of their life, always, without intruding, and to be able to talk to them and love them. I hope they know they can count on me, always. 8.- Can you leave a final message to all of the mothers reading this article? Love your kids, tell them how much you love them all the time, and be VERY patient. It is not easy being a mom but the feeling that you get when they tell you that they love you is truly amazing. There will be times that they will make you crazy but there will be others that you will be very proud and happy. So remember those moments when you are about to go crazy. Breathe. Breathe as many times as you can when you feel or know that everything is not going as well as you would like, and remember there will be better times. Talk to your friends from time to time and PLEASE, take care of yourself. We, the moms, deserve time for ourselves.

Coach Nick is a Miami native who grew up in Kendale Lakes. “I love Miami! I love the people, the culture, the weather, and you can swim almost year round!! Nick started his career teaching back in 1992 when he was 16 years old. He started working for “Swim Miami” owned by Thom McAnaney (Tall Thom). Swim Miami was started back in the early 1970’s with a very interesting program built around five consecutive days of 30-minute classes. In 1978, Tall Thom taught Nick these classes for a week. The system is still working today with only minor changes. After working in several industries, including 8 years as a police officer for the MiamiDade Schools Police Department, Nick and Thom joined forces once again in 2013. Coach Nick had a growing company in the West Kendall area and Tall Thom was traveling to client’s homes from downtown to Palmetto Bay. Fast forward five years and Tall Thom’s Swim School is now iSwim Academy. iSwim Academy is a company dedicated to teaching survival in and around the water, swimming for fun and stroke development. The idea, whether teaching private, semiprivate, or group classes is to convey to the students that swimming is fun, fun and more fun! They have been offering

swimming lessons to children and adults in the Miami area for over 40 years. In 2016 Coach Nick partnered with the City of South Miami and has been contracted to run his program at Murray Park Aquatic Center. iSwim Academy offers private and group classes during a morning and afternoon block. A nice addition to the classes is the non-competitive swim team and triathlon team starting this year. “My biggest goal is to pass on my passion for being in the water exploring and having fun!” Coach Nick and the iSwim team can be reached at 305-4560518 for more information. CHLOE’S A DIFFERENT WAY
TO SEE LIFE By Claudia U. Orrett
hen you grow up, you find your life partner and you may or may not have children. I was blessed to be the mother of twins as I always wanted to be a mom. When my two daughters started to grow I noticed that one of them didn’t reach her milestones as quickly as the other one did. Whenever you do not like what you are seeing or experiencing, you try to remove yourself or change the situation. Sometimes this doesn’t seem like a possible option. My daughter was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy – also known as CP - is the MOST common motor disability and the second most common disability in children, after Autism. According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 in 278 children have Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy describes
a disorder that affects the ability to control movement due to damage to the brain. This is a non-progressive disorder that can occur before birth, during delivery, or soon after being born. The physical symptoms typically appear in the first few years of life. This finding made me and my husband feel terrible but we tried to see the situation with another point of view. As a parent we can’t be dejected or depressed. We went throw triumphs and challenges, and we did all that we thought was the best for our daughter. I decided to write a book “Chloe’s Journey” that is the story about my daughter named Chloe. The book describes my journey as a mother with the purpose of helping other mothers or families who have experienced similar situations, and also to help raise awareness about the challenges of raising a child with Cerebral Palsy
