Being Kind starts at home. touched and become happier, more content, and improved human beings. It can become a way of life and an excellent habit to undertake. I remember my loving grandma telling me that my mind was a garden. My thoughts and actions were the seeds to grow flowers instead of weeds. As a child, I didn’t fully understand, but as I matured, I did and still hear her in my head as I became a grandmother myself, setting the example for my own grandchildren.

I don’t mean to brag, but they have followed that example and implemented their own activities while encouraging their friends to join them.

I

s it just me, but did the year 2023 seem to fly by faster than usual? It feels like the upcoming holidays will be here in a flash!

There is still time to prepare to finish this year and be prepared to make 2024 a meaningful year to remember.

The first action needed is to sit down with your family for a discussion and have different colors of post-it notes, colored markers, and poster boards. Ask your children what they think the definition of the word “KIND” means to them. I did a thesaurus of it and was pleased to find the following: nice, generous, thoughtful, compassionate, considerate, charitable, humane, sympathetic, gentle, and benevolent. I then searched for examples and found “ Every act of kindness is a piece of love we leave behind” and “Appreciate those who touch our life with kindness and make it better.” Make it a challenge to focus each

day on doing something kind for others just because you wish to be a thoughtful, nice, loving person. Write it on down and designate an area in the kitchen or family room to display it until the end of the year.

This display will provide possible suggestions to everyone to copy and duplicate.

I can guarantee that everyone will be engaged and focused, and all will be

One suggestion is to go through their room and remove all toys they have outgrown or are no longer interested in.

They can assist in cleaning and sanitizing and donate to Care Resource, M i a m i Rescue Mission, Chapman House for the Homeless, or Goodwill.

T h e s e agencies will ensure the toys are placed for those in need. Let’s all make the upcoming year happier, and it will start with us all becoming kinder to one another.

GIVE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELL-BEING A BOOST OVER WINTER BREAK

TIP # 2 – EAT HEALTHY The holidays are a time when there are lots of treats and rich, decadent foods. Although it might be hard to turn down dessert, remember that just because there are more sweets, comfort foods and festive holiday drinks, don’t forget to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your meals. They are low calorie and great sources of vitamins and minerals that can help keep your immune system strong during the winter season. Also, keep an eye on portion size. It’s ok to enjoy comfort food and sweets but, be mindful of how much you are consuming so you don’t overindulge.

The holiday hustle is real.

As parents, we’re planning, shopping and packing all of our favorite traditions into just a few weeks. While many of us thrive on this holiday rush, being busy often means putting things like physical health and mental well-being on the backburner. With a long holiday break ahead, one of the biggest struggles many parents face is how to keep kids off the screens and out of the treats. But, we’ve compiled a few simple tips to help you prioritize your family’s health and keep your own mental well-being in check this holiday season.

TIP # 1 – STAY ACTIVE Fitness should always be a priority in a family’s daily schedule, even during the holiday season. The American Heart Association recommends that healthy children stay active throughout the day in order to maintain a healthy weight and keep their hearts, brains and bodies healthy1.

Although the days are shorter and your schedule may be booked, try to incorporate activity into your family’s everyday routine.

For example, pick the farthest parking spot at the mall so you can get more steps in and, instead of driving around to see holiday lights, take a family walk around your neighborhood to enjoy the decorations and fresh air. As for the kids, set specific times throughout the day that are designated outdoor times. You can also set timers on screens to avoid a full day of endless browsing and watching.

TIP # 3 PRIORITIZE YOUR MENTAL-WELL BEING With kids being home from school and crowded stores during Christmas shopping, stress levels may start to rise, and your hours of sleep may start to drop. Make sure that you are getting a full night’s rest to maintain your heart health. The National Sleep Foundation recommends at least 7-9 hours of sleep for adults. Good sleep benefits your whole body including your heart and brain with effects such as improved mood, memory and reasoning2.

If you are looking for more ways to be active, the American Heart Association offers school programs to bring expanded curriculum resources to classrooms; rooted in proven science which has shown that kids who are regularly active have a better chance of a healthy adulthood3. The Kids Heart Challenge for elementary schools offers physical activities to get students’ hearts pumping such as jumping rope, practicing basketball skills, dancing or completing an obstacle course. The American Heart Challenge is a complementary program tailored to middle and high school students.

Dysfunction During The

H liday S E A S O N

A Google search defines “DYSFUNCTION” as impaired or abnormal function. This article will come out right in the middle of the “Holidays,” which seem to highlight so much dysfunction in those that matter most at a time when we are supposed to be taking time to stop, breathe, reflect, love, appreciate, have gratitude, etc. Especially in the United States, we seem to highlight both oh so well.

The holiday season, traditionally associated with joy and togetherness,

can sometimes be a challenging time for individuals and families dealing w i th d ysfuncti on. The hei ghtened expectations, coupled with the pressures of creating picture-perfect celebrations, can exacerbate underlying tensions. For some, dysfunction may manifest in strained relationships, unresolved conflicts, or the absence of loved ones.

The dissonance between the idealized holiday image and the reality of personal struggles can lead to feelings of isolation

and stress. It’s important to acknowledge that not everyone experiences the holidays in the same way, and for those navigating dysfunction, self-compassion and seeking support can be crucial.

This season, fostering understanding and empathy can help create a more inclusive and compassionate atmosphere, recognizing that the holidays may not be universally festive for everyone.

Allow yourself, and others around you the grace to screw up a time or two during these times of year. Breathe. Breathe again. Set limits. Set limits to who gets your time more than your family. Set limits on how much you are going to eat and drink. Set spending limits on presents and dinner out. Set minimal limits on how much time you will dedicate to your family, children, spouse, and household.
