In this issue we celebrate family, kids and love.

PUBLISHER - EDITOR Karla C. Richey

For me, and I’m sure for most of you, there is nothing more valuable in life than your family. I’m so grateful to have my lovely husband Scott and my two beautiful kids that make my life complete. I hope I am a good role model for my kids, as my parents were for me. They gave me their support, life values, and unconditional love. On our cover page, we have Alejandra Molina, Telemundo news anchor and her beautiful family sharing their love. She told Miami Kids Magazine “The birth of ours kids has made our love grow and be stronger”. Don’t miss the complete interview on page fourteen. In our online magazine online we have a great article titled “Heart Full of Love”. It is a real story about a young kid named Nico who born with a congenital heart disease. This article will inspire you to value life every day. March is National Nutrition Month and we have a great article to monitor what our kids are eating and get back to basics with nutrition. Summer is approaching faster than we think, and iSwim Academy is sponsoring Miami Kids Summer Camp Guide. In this issue you will see in Guide #1 some options to consider for your kids to attend camp. We have to be prepared and research out the best options for our little ones. I love all of the Miami Kids team, readers, and advertisers. Thanks again for your support!

PICK

up your toys”. “Close the door”. “Hand that to me”. “Help your sister”. “I didn’t mean to do it”. “Where is the street?” Sound familiar? We all have used these expressions. These phrases are a small example of what a parent utters to or in front of their children or grandchildren every day. Now add some words and hear how different it sounds. “Please pick up your toys”. “Can you close the door? Thank you”. “Please hand that to me”. “I would appreciate if you could help your sister”. “I am sorry, I didn’t mean to do it. “Excuse me. I need to find a street, and would be grateful for directions”, sounds so much better when the “magic” words are used, right? Our children are watching as we go through our day of errands. They will witness you smiling and thanking the cashier at the grocery store and saying please to the bagboy when you request

8

how you wish the bags to be packed. You will set the example of how they will treat others. If the use of the “magic words” is missing in your home, it is never too late to implement them. You can start a discussion at the dinner table about speaking kindly and how everyone is going to try to be more polite moving forward. You can request that everyone gently reminds one another when they forget. Then during future meals, ask them how it is going, examples of how they did and how it makes them feel. I must remind myself when my precious grandchildren are riding in the backseat of my car that they are listening. Traffic in Miami is always a challenge, and manners are critical. After a car failed to let me merge, I uttered “Thanks, &**$%#@”. A little voice asked from the backseat, “Why are you thanking the &**$%#@?”. Grandma is now in timeout. There is a saying “Children are great imitators. So give them something great to imitate”. Thank you!.

Over the course of the years, videogames have been part of a fast-rising industry. According to a 2017 annual report by the Entertainment Software Association, in 2016, the gaming industry contributed a total of $11.7 billion to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product. But what causes the industry to keep growing? Since they first came into existence, videogames have often been criticized for their “negative side-effects.” Research however, disproves these myths as playing videogames could be beneficial if they are played under control and within limits:

Videogames trigger volumetric brain increases. According to a study by Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, videogames could bolster your kid’s abilities to remember with more clarity, and develop sharper motor skills. Videogames encourage a growth mindset. While playing videogames, oftentimes kids are provided with multiple lives or the game will simply restart when they “lose”. This “reset” tells your kid it is okay to fail. Videogames create friendship. According to a study by The Pew Research Center, 57% of teens report playing videogames in multiple ways— alone and with others. Nearly half of these teens said they only play with individuals they already know in their communities. Videogames could serve as an activity for your kids to develop relationships with their peers.

id you know that food plays a major role in how you and your family will perform throughout the day and in life? It does! Whether you are training for a marathon, trying to lose weight, observing dietary regulations due to a health condition or just by preparing a solid breakfast in the morning, your food choices can have an impact in how your body will either feel alert and active or sluggish and even sleepy! Furthermore, if a proper nutrition is followed, you will not only add many years of life but also, quality in your life.

plan that adapts to what their bodies need. So how to get it going? As parents, we usually go to the grocery store with the best of the intentions but end up feeling overwhelmed. Shopping and preparing a healthy meal should not become a hassle for you. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the following elements should be present in every balanced diet: a) Lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, b) fruits and vegetables, c) whole grain, nuts and beans, d) milk and milk products. All of them, have the necessary vitamins, minerals and fiber that your body needs.

March is National Nutrition month so why don’t we look into the guidelines recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics? Although there is not one perfect diet for all, everyone should have a nutritious

How many calories a child should take? An average toddler should have about 1,000 calories a day. School-age children should consume

from 1,600 to 2,200 calories a day. As kids get closer to puberty, the number of calories needed will eventually increase. Ask your child’s pediatrician for advice on this matter considering your child’s physical composition, weight and shape. Moreover, when we think of food, we must compromise on a balanced concept of it as the fuel that keeps our bodies strong and active. Foods should never take the place of an emotional consolation or reward; foods should take the place of an important part of our self-respect and self-care. Having this clean perspective in mind, will help you determine only the best for you and your family.

Her classmate mimics her and shapes a round blob from the clay. One of the girls can see, the other is visually impaired. But one cannot tell the difference between them. And that’s the main mission of their school. Housed on the top floors of the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind (MLHB) in Miami’s Little Havana, The Lighthouse Learning Center for Children™ is a private-public

funded initiative that brings together sighted and visually impaired children in the same infant and Pre-K classrooms. “The goal here is for total immersion,” said Virginia Jacko, CEO of the MLHB and the powerhouse behind the school. “Blind people hang out with the blind and sighted people do not know how to interact with us.” And often people assume that blind people are cognitively challenged and cannot make their own decisions, said Jacko. Blind herself, Jacko wanted a more inclusive academic environment than the traditional one for the visually impaired, so she spearheaded the

by University of Miami Communications effort, along with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools and The Children’s Trust, to open the school, which is the only one of its kind in Florida and may be the only one in the nation. Jacko also sought out Rebecca Shearer, University of Miami associate professor in Psychology, who in a partnership with the school and with the help of five graduate UM students conducts research to evaluate the program. The research is the core of a four-year study that will rate how the children develop socially, physically and emotionally, as well as the parents’ wellbeing. To achieve that goal, classes are small (a 5:1 ratio) and are equipped with braille typewriters and braille markings on everything from colored blocks, books and each toy cabinet. The Learning Center currently has 40 students and can expand to accommodate up to 100 early learners.
